The forum in a statement said CoR, signed in the name of God, carried a heavy responsibility, adding that it would to listen to their stories and stand together for peace. Twelve years ago when Naga society was disrupted by violence and bloodshed, FNR said the signing of CoR on June 13, 2009 by then NSCN (I-M) chairman late Isak Chishi Swu, then NSCN (K) chairman late SS Kaplang and FGN kedaghe (president) S Singnya was a divine gift to Naga people for, it paved the path to end-
ing factional violence. Since then, the forum claimed that Naga society was enjoying an enormous familial and social benefit from. In the past 23 years, Naga society had begun moving with a spirit of peace felt by elders, commoners and joy was seen in the faces of children, it added. “Sadly, the cause and effect of violence take no time to spiral down by turning man and woman inward against each other,” it pointed out. At this juncture if Nagas were under threat, FNR said this would be at the “factional” and community levels and the problem should be either resolved or failed. Stressing that the future of Nagas depended on how “we act and remain committed” to CoR, the forum reminded NPGs and their leaders that they were directly related to the covenant.

NSCN (R) collective leaders assure to resolve all differences
DIMAPUR, OCT 20 (NPN): Against the backdrop of NSCN (R) vice president Akato Chophi mulling to split from the group, the NSCN (R) collective leaders Y Wangtin Naga and P. Tikhak have appealed to all Nagas not to feel disturbed but help the group through prayers to amicably resolve all issues. While stating that there could be minor differences within the party workers, Wangtin and Tikhak however, assured to do their best to resolve all the differences very shortly. They also said that they were extremely disturbed at some of “our leaders” going public in expressing their resentment towards the group. “At a time like this, when we are all patiently waiting in prayer to see better days for the Nagas, it is certainly not pleasant to our ears to hear of
new faction. Factionalism has killed the backbone of the Nagas economically, socially, politically, Naga brotherhood and what not,” they stressed. Asserting that this was certainly not a time to create new party and factions, the two NSCN (R) leaders insisted that the focus should be on finding out a political solution collectively and also to “introspect into the past where we went wrong.” “Differences do happen in every society, every institution and every family but, we should not allow the differences to overcome our common goal,” they emphasised. It may be mentioned that the NSCN (R) through its MIP had informed that the meeting held on October 19, at Hoito village was “aimed for endorsement of some very important and impending issue”. It said
that majority of regional authorities, UT-1, secretariat staffs, Naga Army, political wing and ACLs attended the meeting. However, MIP said that the declaration for endorsement was kept on hold/in abeyance for twothree days “due to a very personal request of WC, NNPGs convenor, N. Kitovi Zhimomi.” MIP said that the members present at the meeting-- “HoD, HoM, chairman of UT-1/regional authorities, secretariat staff led by the chief secretary and home secretary, Naga Army officials, in individual capacities and by show of hands, in concurrence and agreement, all re-affirmed, reiterated and declared their loyalty and allegiance to their collective leader, Akato Chophi, echoing and reverberating behind the call of the vice president for ‘Re-Reformation’.”

US doctors successfully transplant first-ever pig kidney to a human NPF committed to resolve pol. NEW YORK, OCT 20 (REUTERS): For the first time, a pig kidney has been transplanted into a human without triggering immediate rejection by the recipient’s immune system, a potentially major advance that could eventually help alleviate a dire shortage of human organs for transplant. The procedure done at NYU Langone Health in New York City involved use of a pig whose genes had been altered so that its tissues no longer contained a molecule known to trigger

support, researchers told Reuters. For three days, the new kidney was attached to her blood vessels and maintained outside her body, giving researchers access to
it. Test results of the transplanted kidney’s function “looked pretty normal,” said transplant surgeon Dr. Robert Montgomery, who led the study. The kidney made “the amount of urine that you would expect” from a transplanted human kidney, he said, and there was no evidence of the vigorous, early rejection seen when unmodified pig kidneys are transplanted into nonhuman primates. The recipient’s abnormal creatinine level– an indicator of poor
kidney function – returned to normal after the transplant, Montgomery said. Researchers have been working for decades on the possibility of using animal organs for transplants, but have been stymied over how to prevent immediate rejection by the human body. Montgomery’s team theorized that knocking out the pig gene for a carbohydrate that triggers rejection– a sugar molecule, or glycan, called alpha-gal – would prevent the problem.

Kenye said that talking about fourth industrial revolution reminded him of the G-20 Osaka Leaders Declaration which talked about sharing good practices on effective policy and regulatory approaches and frameworks that were innovative and agile, flexible and adapted to the digital era including the use of regulatory sandboxes. He said there was immense potential in technology
to secure development, generate employment, raise income levels and improve the quality of life for the citizens. Centre approves budget for highspeed broadband internet connection He appreciated the centre for approving high speed broadband internet connection for 16 States in India including Nagaland stating that over 3,60,000 across India would be covered initially and the budget has been approved for viability gap funding (VGF). This he said would enable access to online education, telemedicine, skill development and E-commerce in the villages. As the world tries to recuperate from Covid, Kenye informed that it was interesting to see how COVID has pushed organisations over the technology tipping point and transformed business and processes forever. He said the leaders need to be careful that the past inequalities of the labour market was not reproduced in information economy. He also said that the response of policymakers must be integrated and comprehensive, involving all stakeholders of the global polity from governments, public and private
sectors to academia and civil society. ‘Promoting security in digital economy should not be neglected’ Kenye said the issue of promoting security in the digital economy and of addressing security gaps and vulnerabilities cannot be neglected by policymakers and international community. He mentioned that the scale, scope and complexity of the transformation ushered by the fourth industrial revolution would be unlike anything mankind had ever experienced before. Kenye however said that the members had to make sure the change was humancentric, humane and towards the betterment of the societies, nations and most importantly the environment. The fourth industrial revolution was merely a medium to fulfil the aspiration for a better world Kenye said adding that it was just, peaceful, prosperous and equitable for future generation. Altogether there are 33 speakers from various countries where the leaders will discuss in the areas of 4.0 creative industries, marketing and communication, government, society, women, law and global regulations etc.

Landslides cut off highway linking Gangtok Flooding in low lying North Bengal areas GANGTOK/KOLKATA, OCT 20 (PTI): Torrential rains pounded the tiny Himalayan state of Sikkim and the tea growing region of North Bengal, causing landslides which cut off National Highway-10, the main road linking Gangtok with the rest of the country. Normal life in parts of the tea growing north Bengal was also affected on Wednesday as torrential showers in Darjeeling, Kalimpong and Jalpaiguri districts triggered landslides causing damages to roads and bridges, halting or constricting traffic in various places, officials said. Hundreds of tourists, who have thronged the hills during the Durga Puja season, are facing difficulties in travelling to their next destination or reaching railway stations or the Bagdogra airport to return home, owing to the incessant rain and landslides, officials said. Manipur traffic police intensify drive against traffic rule violators
Correspondent
IMPHAL, OCT 20: Manipur traffic police have intensified its drive against the violators, barely a day after the state chief minister expressed his concern over the increasing road accidents in the state. The officials said the drive began following a strong directive from the higher authority to put in place a visible road discipline in the state. Traffic police were also seen conducting the drive at various places across the state capital city, particularly in the congested areas today. The traffic police have been enforcing the traffic rules continuously. However, it has been intensified following the fresh instruction, traffic police SP Kakchingtam Ajitkumar told reporters. In a speech on the occasion of the 130th raising day of Manipur police celebrated on Tuesday in Imphal, chief minister N Biren Singh informed that he had instructed the police to enforce the traffic rules in a stricter manner to check increasing road accidents. He asked the police department to be stricter, within the ambit of relevant law, while dealing with any law breakers citing its need
in making the society a disciplined one. He observed that negligent driving was the reason for frequent road accidents that resulted in the loss of many lives. The traffic police SP said that traffic police personnel have been detailed at various places, particularly accident prone areas, across the city to conduct the drive. The personnel were instructed to check driving license and vehicle documents and penalize the defaulters and riders without helmets in case of twowheelers and safety belt in case of four-wheelers, and also to verify any underage driving, he said. Asserting that wrong parking has become a big hurdle in traffic management in the commercial parts of the city, the SP said that a novel way to prevent wrong parking in the city will be adopted. Observing that occupying footpath spaces by street vendors was one of the reasons for traffic congestion and accidents in the city, the SP said that eviction those occupying the spaces will begin from tomorrow. The senior traffic police said that there was a need for cooperation from locals to ensure smooth flow of traffic in the city.

There is no such divisions, we are totally strong. I think this time we are stronger and united than ever before.” The MPCC president, however, said, “It is unfortunate to see that cabinet ministers don’t see eye to eye amongst themselves because of fighting for bones within the government.” Reiterating that Congress is fighting as “one unit” and dismissing reports of factionalism, especially between him and leader of opposition Dr. Mukul Sangma, the veteran Congress leader said, “We are working together. I think at the beginning there might have been a misunderstanding but today Mukul is working hard and I am working very hard.”

The party spokespersons alleged that a ‘third force’ wants to disrupt the peace and harmony prevailing in the state, but their attempts have been thwarted by quick action of the administration and sensible reaction of the public. “Assam has been home to different languages, like Karbi, Mising and Bodo, for ages and Assamese has been the unifying language for all the people. Likewise, Assamese and Bengali languages have complimented each other in their growth over the centuries,” the BJP spokespersons said.

However, it could not be called off considering its significance in building fraternal bonds among different communities, he added. Singh reiterated that unity between people in the hills and valleys has been strengthened in the last four and half years with the coming of the new government. It was testified on many occasions when people of hill districts brought vegetables grown in their villages for valley

loses its prominent Jat faces in Lakhimpur Kheri: SC raps UP government Congress western UP as Malik family set to join SP
Harish Salve, who appeared along with advocate Garima Prasad for the state government, said the status report has been filed in a sealed cover on Wednesday because of the impression that it was for the perusal of the court only. “ N o t h a t wa s n o t required and we have just received it now...we never said anything about sealed covers,” the bench said while declining the request to hear the matter on Friday. It listed the next hearing on October 26. It said, “Mr Salve, you said that you (police) have examined 44 witnesses and out of them, four witnesses’ s t a t e m e n t s h ave b e e n recorded under section 164 (before a judicial magistrate) of CrPC. Why have you not recorded the statements of other witnesses under 164.” “It is going on. The
process is going on my Lordships,” Salve said, adding that earlier the concern was that it appeared that police were going “little soft on the accused and now they all have been arrested and now everybody is in jail.” He said there were two crimes and in the first one, the accused drove into the farmers and in the second FIR, three of the accused, who drove into the farmers, were lynched. In the lynching case, the probe is “little difficult” as who did what is difficult to ascertain given the big crowd of farmers, he said. The bench said it was asking questions about the first FIR and sought to know the number of accused and their status in the probe. “Today, how many of them are in judicial custody and how many of them are in police custody... Because, until or unless they are interrogated you may not get any information,” the bench asked. “Total 10 accused have been arrested and out of them, four are in police custody and the remaining six have been sent to jail in judicial custody,” the lawyer said. What happened to the remaining six accused,
the bench asked adding, “Did you apply to seek their police custody or they were straightway sent to judicial custody”. “They were in police custody and as you did not seek their police remand so they were sent to judicial c u s t o d y. W h a t i s t h e situation in this case? We just want the facts to be clarified. There are situations where the police demand the custody of the accused and the court declines and send the accused to judicial custody and there are cases in which police says that the accused is no longer required in police custody and therefore, the court has no choice but to send the accused to police custody. What is the situation in this case,” it said. The state counsel said that the accused were inter rogated in police custody for three days before being sent to jail. “I am given to understand that the s t a t e m e n t s h ave b e e n recorded and a lot of videos have been received and they all have been sent to forensic labs and once they (reports) come, it will be pretty clear. They may not be needed for interrogation here,” Salve said.

NEW DELHI, OCT 20 (PTI): The Supreme Court on Wednesday came down hard on the Uttar Pradesh government for its ongoing probe into the sensational Lakhimpur Kheri case, saying it thought police are “dragging” “feet” and they are required to “dispel” that impression and ensure recording of statements of witnesses before magistrates and their protection. “We think you are dragging your feet, please dispel that impression,” observed the top court, adding that the probe should not be an “unending story” and red-flagged the issue of non-recording of statements of nearly 40 prosecution witnesses, of the total 44, before judicial magistrates under section 164 of the CrPC. “Please ask them to immediately take steps to record section 164 statements. That is the most important thing...protection to the victims as well as the witnesses,” said the bench comprising Chief Justice N V Ramana and justices Sur ya Kant and Hima Kohli. Statements under section 164 of the CrPC (Code of Criminal Procedure)are recorded
MUMBAI, OCT 20 (PTI): A special court here on Wednesday refused to grant bail to Aryan Khan, son of Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan, and two others in connection with the case of seizure of banned drugs on board a cruise ship off the Mumbai coast. Special Judge V V Patil, designated to hear cases related to the Narcotics Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, rejected the bail pleas of Aryan Khan, his friend Arbaaz Merchant and fashion model Munmun Dhamecha. They will now have to approach the Bombay High Court for bail. When the matter was called out for order in the afternoon, special judge Patil said, “Rejected.” The trio was arrested on October 3 by the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) for alleged conspiracy, possession, consumption, purchase and trafficking of drugs. Aryan Khan and the others have been booked for offences under Sections 8(c), 20(b), 27, 28, 29 and 35 of the NDPS Act.

The apex court, hearing a matter about the October 3 violence in Lakhimpur Kheri in which eight persons including four farmers were killed during a farmers’ protest, was told by the state government that statements of four out of the 44 witnesses have been recorded by the judicial magistrate. Ten people, including Union Minister of State for Home Ajay Mishra’s son Ashish Mishra, have been arrested so far in connection with the case. The bench raised the issue of filing of status report on the day of hearing with the CJI observing, “we waited till 1 AM last night for any filing. But we received nothing”. Senior advocate

The trio is presently in judicial custody. While Aryan Khan and Merchant are lodged at the Arthur Road prison in Mumbai, Dhamecha is lodged at the Byculla women’s prison here. Aryan Khan had in his bail plea said the NCB’s contention that he was involved in conspiracy and illicit drug trafficking was absurd, and pointed out that there was no recovery of drugs made from him. The NCB, however, opposed the bail plea and said Aryan Khan had been consuming drugs for a few years now and was in
touch with some persons who appear to be a part of an international drug network for procurement of drugs. The agency was relying on WhatsApp chats of Ar yan Khan, which they claim point towards procurement of bulk quantities of drugs. The NCB had argued that although there was no recovery from Aryan Khan, the recovery of six grams of Charas from his friend Arbaaz Merchant points to conscious possession by Aryan Khan. So far, 20 people have been arrested in the case.

issued on the subject on and after February 17, 2021, the Union health ministry said. “The global trajectory of COVID-19 pandemic continues to decline with certain regional variations. The need to monitor the continuously changing nature of virus and evolution of SARS-CoV-2 variants of concern (VOCs) must still remain in focus. The existing guidelines (issued on 17th February 2021 with subsequent addendums) for international arrivals in India have been formulated taking a risk-based approach. “In view increasing vaccination coverage across the globe and the changing nature of the pandemic, the existing guidelines for international arrivals in India have been reviewed,” the ministry said. The new document provides protocols to be complied with international travellers as well those to be followed by airlines, points of entry (airports, seaports and land border) for risk profiling of passengers.

functionary told ThePrint that with the duo resigning, the party has lost its last prominent Jat leaders in the region. “The Malik family was known as our only known Jat faces here. Earlier, the former MP Choudhar y Bijendra Singh and a few other Jat leaders also left the party,” the functionary said. “Now the party should focus on developing a new Jat leadership at the local level but the Maliks’ exit is a big loss.” The functionary added that Pankaj had also been the state unit’s vice president, while his father Harendra Malik had been a member of Priyanka Gandhi Vadra’s advisory committee.

The judges adjourned the hearing to the next week. G h a d ge, p r e s e n t ly posted in Akola district, has leveled allegations of corruption against Singh and some other officers
when Mr Singh was Thane police commissioner. Singh pressurised him to drop the names of some persons from a case and when he refused, he was framed up in false cases, Ghadge claimed. The FIR was registered under the Atrocities Act as the complainant belongs to an SC community as well as for extortion and some other Indian Penal Code offenses. Singh’s lawyer claimed
A source close to the Malik family told ThePrint that Pankaj wants to contest the assembly elections, while Harendra is eyeing a Lok Sabha ticket. The source added that if the Yadav and Muslim combination is added to the Jat vote-bank, together they will make up over 40 per cent of the votes in the Muzzafarnagar-Shamli belt, where the duo are planning to contest. The source further said that both father and son were waiting for a final call on a Congress-SP or Congress-Rashtriya Lok Dal alliance but now with the Congress set to contest alone, they don’t want to lose another election.
that the FIR was a backlash over Singh’s allegations of corruption against former Maharashtra home minister Anil Deshmukh. The IPS officer is also facing at least four extortion cases in Thane and Mumbai. He was transferred from the post of Mumbai police commissioner in March after the arrest of police officer (now dismissed) Sachin Waze in the case of an SUV with explosives found near industrialist Mukesh Ambani’s residence and the murder of businessman Mansukh Hiran. Singh then accused Deshmukh of asking Waze to collect Rs. 100 crore every month from bars and restaurants in Mumbai. The NCP leader, who denied the allegation, soon stepped down as minister and is facing CBI probe.

The tweets did not mention if the two parties will fight the upcoming state assembly polls together and what pre-poll understanding, if any, they have reached. Coming barely months before the UP assembly elections, the meeting itself, however, assumes significance.
MUMBAI, OCT 20 (AGENCIES): The whereabouts of former Mumbai police commissioner Param Bir Singh were not known, the Maharashtra government on Wednesday told the Bombay High Court, reports NDTV. As the IPS officer was not traceable, it did not wish to continue its assurance that no coercive action (such as arrest) would be taken against him in an Atrocities Act case, the government said. Senior counsel Darius Khambata, appearing for the state, told a division bench of Justices Nitin Jamdar and Sarang Kotwal that the circumstances had changed. “He isn’t traceable. In these circumstances, we do not want to continue our earlier statement where the government said it would not take any coercive action against him,” Mr Khambata said. Param Bir Singh’s counsel Mahesh Jethmalani said he had not been declared as an absconder yet. “In this case, he was summoned twice and both the times he responded,” Mr Jethmalani said. The high court was hearing a petition filed by the senior IPS officer seeking to quash the FIR

Highs and lows
ver since the pandemic outbreak, the woes of the common man have been multiplying everyday as fuel and cooking gas prices reach new heights with each passing day. These have only had a domino effect on prices of essential commodities which are going up without any regulation, making daily life more expensive like never before. When the Centre hiked fuel prices for the sixth consecutive day on Wednesday, it pushed up fuel prices to a new record high after which, petrol became costlier by 30 paisa and diesel costlier by 35 paisa. This was the 17th increase in the price of petrol and the 20th in diesel rates since a three-week long hiatus in revising the prices ended in the last week of September, according to PTI. Since then, the cost of diesel has gone up by Rs 6.50 per litre and petrol price has increased by Rs 5. According to market experts, the prices of essential commodities have shot up 40% to 100% in the past year owing to the repeated fuel price hikes. Amid the pandemic and the lockdowns, many families are struggling to make both ends meet. Experts say the cost of living has increased 3.17 times in a span of 20 years. The purchasing power of the common man has come down as essential commodity prices skyrocket. The bread earner for a family of four will require more than thrice the salary earned in 2001 to live somewhat comfortably. The rise in prices of essential commodities impacts every household but the poorest sections are the worst affected. The diesel and petrol prices crossed Rs 100 and Rs 106, respectively, in most states and these are being reflected on the prices of essential commodities. In Dimapur, prices of vegetables and food items have risen sharply due to the pandemic as well as extraneous factors. Vegetables that used to cost Rs.20 per kg in the pre-pandemic period, is today being sold for Rs.80 per kg. Prices of vegetables, especially onion and tomato, are rising in every urban areas in India, on the back of higher fuel prices and damage to summer crops due to heavy rains. The government has built a record reserve of 2, 00,000 tonnes of onions to deal with potential spikes in prices during the current lean season. Onion prices tend to rise during September because it marks the beginning of a nearly three-month lean season, when stocks from previous crops deplete, past data show. Prices of some food items, where seasonality plays a big role, tend to be volatile. For a predominant non-vegetarian population, consumption of animal and poultry products in the state has been increasing over the years with the annual imports being to the tune of around Rs.1219.70 crore. Out of this, the state internally produces 43.35% of the requirement and leaving a shortfall of 56.65%. In terms of imports, the state imported meat worth Rs 121.56 crore by importing 7.279 tonne but the total shortage of meat in the state stood at 34.66 tonne. The economic woes of the overwhelming number of people is precarious. They find their monthly kitchen bills soaring and their incomes plummeting due to regular increase in prices of fuel. The government has to take a decisive step to check price rise or if it cannot, then it should bring drastic cuts on VAT on fuel.
DailyDevotion Is God’s Will My Will?
This is the will of God, your sanctification… —1 Thessalonians 4:3 Sanctification is not a question of whether God is willing to sanctify me— is it my will? Am I willing to let God do in me everything that has been made possible through the atonement of the Cross of Christ? Am I willing to let Jesus become sanctification to me, and to let His life be exhibited in my human flesh? (see 1 Corinthians 1:30). Beware of saying, “Oh, I am longing to be sanctified.” No, you are not. Recognize your need, but stop longing and make it a matter of action. Receive Jesus Christ to become sanctification for you by absolute, unquestioning faith, and the great miracle of the atonement of Jesus will become real in you. All that Jesus made possible becomes mine through the free and loving gift of God on the basis of what Christ accomplished on the cross. And my attitude as a saved and sanctified soul is that of profound, humble holiness (there is no such thing as proud holiness). It is a holiness based on agonizing repentance, a sense of inexpressible shame and degradation, and also on the amazing realization that the love of God demonstrated itself to me while I cared nothing about Him (see Romans 5:8). He completed everything for my salvation and sanctification. No wonder Paul said that nothing “shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord” (Romans 8:39). Sanctification makes me one with Jesus Christ, and in Him one with God, and it is accomplished only through the magnificent atonement of Christ. Never confuse the effect with the cause. The effect in me is obedience, service, and prayer, and is the outcome of inexpressible thanks and adoration for the miraculous sanctification that has been brought about in me because of the atonement through the Cross of Christ.

Myanmar We Care – We Are With You
e stand with the people of Myanmar in their struggle for peace, democracy, political freedom, human rights and just economic development. They have decided that they will not accept the military rule and dictatorship under which they have suffered for so long. They are right to do so. For decades Myanmar, a country of immense natural wealth, has been impoverished by bad governance. Authoritarian rule knows only how to dominate, and does so with lies. Now it is destroying even the meagre democratic gains of the past two decades. If these gains are to be restored, this will come through people who build trust across the country’s divisions and unite Myanmar’s people, giving the ethnic minorities their rightful role in national affairs. Then a workable democracy can emerge, in which the Tatmadaw returns to the true, honourable role of a national army. We can all help. We can support those in Myanmar who are active in this struggle. We can send desperately-needed humanitarian support. We can work through our governments, institutions and media to keep
the spotlight on Myanmar and persuade the Tatmadaw to heed the people. We can take inspiration from the courage and commitment of Myanmar’s people, and tackle the sources of division in our own countries – the greed and corruption, powerseeking and hatred. It is not just Myanmar that needs to turn confrontation into cooperation. We need it worldwide if we are to meet the immense global challenges we face. There is no point in just blaming our leaders, even if they are often guided by wrong priorities. We citizens need to take responsibility ourselves, otherwise our children will endure continuing pandemics, immense heat, massive migration, environmental destruction, conflict over resources. The crises we face will only be overcome if both leaders and citizens accept the new level of responsibility that our imperilled planet demands. As the Dalai Lama has stated, ‘Each of us must learn to work not just for his or her own self, family or nation, but for the benefit of all mankind. Universal responsibility is the real key to human survival.’ As we work to help Myanmar in its hour of need, we are helping create a world
fit for our children and grandchildren to grow up in. Global Iodine Deficiency Disorders Prevention Day 21st October 2021

IODINE DEFICIENCY LEADS TO PERMANENT BRAIN DAMAGE
s we celebrate the Global Iodine Deficiency Disorders Prevention Day with the rest of the world today. This item is published to sensitize all citizens to take forward as individual responsibility to eliminate IDDs in our state. IDDs is a major public health problem worldwide. It is confirmed that one out of every five people in India resides in IDD endemic areas. It is estimated that 1.5 billion people in the world and over 200 million people are at risk of getting IDDs. India alone has more than 71 million people suffering from goitre and other IDDs. Importance of iodine: Iodine is essential for synthesis of two thyroid hormones namely thyroxin (T4) and tri-iodothyronin (T3) which are responsible for maintenance of normal growth and development of both brain and body. It is essential especially during the foetal stage (when the baby is in the womb). Therefore iodine deficiency during pregnancy leads to decreased synthesis of the two hormones by the foetal thyroid gland hampering normal growth and development of foetal brain and body which would limit intellectual growth in later years. - Normal daily requirement of iodine for an indi-
he absence of the third wave, lifting of Covid restrictions, allowing the foreign visitors and the recovery of the economy are few positive signals, giving hints of a better tomorrow. But caution is necessary. The chill of winter can be felt in the air. Festivals have filled the atmosphere with hope. Restrictions are being lifted. Tourism is returning to normal. Foreign flights have got green signal. Movement of people between states has begun. Markets are buzzing with activities. The festivals of Ganesh Chaturthi, Navratri, Dussehra and Durga Pooja were celebrated with pomp and show. Now Diwali is coming. Students are returning to their schools and colleges. There was a fear of power crisis due to shortage of coal, that too was
vidual is 100 to 150 micrograms and 200 micrograms for pregnant and lactating mother. Source of iodine. The best sources of iodine are sea foods such as sea fish, sea salt, sea weeds, and cod liver oil. Smaller amount occur in the foods such as milk, meat, cereals and vegetables. But as sea foods and other sea products are not freely available everywhere, the normal body requirement comes from food grown on soil with adequate iodine. Iodine deficiency is therefore geochemical in nature. Lose of iodine from the soil. Iodine is constantly lost from the soil by process of soil erosion. The major factors responsible for iodine depletion in the soil are due to heavy rainfall/snowfall, recurrent flooding, accelerated deforestation, multiple crops, jhum cultivation, burning of forest excessive use of pesticides and chemicals. Consequence of iodine deficiency: A number of physical and mental disorders result from iodine deficiency which affects every stage of human life – both young and adult. 1) Foetus: Abortion, stillbirth, congenital, abnormalities, increased prenatal mortality, mental retardation, deaf and dumb, paralysis,
squint etc. 2) Children: Neonatal goitre, hypothyroidism, physical and mental growth retardation, lowering of I.Q level, poor school performance and cretins. 3) Adult: Impaired mental function, low productivity goitre with its complications. 4) Livestock’s: Through research it has been confirmed that the productivity of the livestock has remarkably been reduced. Government’s Policy: Realizing the severity of IDD problem, the Government took a policy decision to iodise the entire salt for edible purpose and instructed the States/UT’s to ban the sale of non-iodised salt. Any traders/shopkeepers found selling non-iodized salt for edible purpose are liable for prosecution under the Prevention of Food Adulteration Act (PFA) 1954. Prevention and control of IDD’s: Though the problems of iodine deficiency disorders are severe and irreversible, its control and preventive measures are very simple and cheap. We can prevent both present and future generations from the consequences of IDD’s just by consuming good quality iodised salt daily. Important points to remember: 1) To disseminate the
information’s on IDD’s. 2) To generate public demand for iodised salt from Fair Price Shop at a subsidized rate for it is a PDS subject. 3) To stock and sell only iodised salt for human consumption. Non-iodised salt should be labeled “NOT FOR HUMAN CONSUMPTION”. Defaulters are punishable under the provision of Food Safety and Standard Regulation 2011. 4) Always store iodised salt in closed container away from direct sunlight or moisture. 5) Do not keep iodised salt near or above the fire place. 6) Do not stock iodised salt for more than 6 months for in such cases the iodine content of the salt will be lost. 7) Always insist only on Iodised Salt from your shopkeeper. It is indeed the responsibility of every citizen to put a concerted effort to fight the menace of IDD’s by disseminating the information’s on IDD’s and demanding supply of iodised salt through PDS and consumption of only good quality iodised salt for better mental health of our future generation. n the ‘new normal’, technology is playing a big role, as job opportunities can be traced to Google for many markets. That is why many differently abled are coming forward to mark their presence by gaining knowledge to contribute. According to the headline recently published by NITI Aayog, ‘Indian education sector is ready for disruption by artificial intelligence’ it shows that India, by 2030, will have the largest number of youth in the world. According to the report, AI has proved favorable for the disabled to participate in the economy as more and more organizations are looking to hire people with disabilities. Also, as the world embraces AI, organizations are now keen to create jobs for the disabled with the help of AI where they are becoming even more inclusive. According to the State of Education Report for India 2019, there are 78 lakh children with disabilities in India, where 61% of the children in the age group of 5 to 19 years were attending educational institutions. To create an inclusive environment for persons with disabilities in urban and rural India, NGOs and Government are working towards the goal of making them visible in the society through emotional, financial and social support. Many NGOs are running several campaigns to provide skills like mobile repairing, sewing and computer skills for free. Some industries such as cottage industries, call centres, professional career consultants, data entry, teaching, translation and digital marketing markets are proposing equal opportunities for the disabled during the COVID-19 pandemic. At the same time, disabled people are also providing their services in this market from home. It has become easy for them to stand out from the crowd. It is a challenging task to encourage and motivate the disabled in today’s scenario due to their living environment. But in the recent Paralympics, Devendra Jhajharia, Para-athlete Yogesh Kathunia, Shooter Avani Lekhara and Sundar Singh Gurjar have set a high place for all, which shows that the name of a person can be brought to the fore with constant efforts in the right direction. Meanwhile, the government came forward to reward him for becoming a national inspirational figure with financial help for motivating others like him. NGOs and non-profit organizations for the disabled have become socially inclusive. The new normal has raised standards, yet has brought many opportunities that have been beneficial to individuals with disabilities. Prashant Agarwal is the president of Narayan Seva Sansthan, a non-profit organization serving differently abled and underprivileged individuals
Happy days are here again, but be cautious
averted by the promptness of the government. Minor problems remain in the power stations, which are likely to be resolved soon. Overall, Diwali will be bright and the markets will light up. People roaming outside are no longer afraid of the Coronavirus. Earlier the medical fraternity had expressed the fear of a third wave of Covid. It was expected during AugustSeptember, then in OctoberNovember. Currently, there is little chance of the third wave to come. The reason behind this confidence is the higher rate of vaccination, which is about to touch one billion mark soon. Around 70% of the adults in India have taken the first dose of vaccine. However, the number of people who have got both doses is merely 30%.
The only chance of return of the virus is through the movement of foreigners or people without vaccination. People mostly remained indoors for over 18 months, lived under the fear of unknown dangers, or lost someone in family or friends. Everyone is excited now due to the pleasant change in weather, festivities and bustle of the markets. People are visiting their relatives. Have started travelling. In such a situation, the only danger is from overcrowded places and careless fellows. That is why, wearing a mask, maintaining a safe distance with others and washing or sanitizing hands is too important. There is a need to be careful and alert. Newspapers are getting thicker day by day, due to advertisements – indicating a positive surge in the
economy. More advertising, more production, more business, more employment – a change awaited for a long time. This has made the share markets bullish. Let’s hope for a better year ahead. In a recent twitter chat by the Bloggers Alliance, Vikas Singh Chauhan, Director, Home Textile Exporters’ Welfare Association (HEWA), said that this decade belongs to India. HR expert LS Murthy says that the present time belongs to information technology. Top IT companies are making large scale recruitments. The skill development training sector is also active, because youths need new skills to improve their employability. Due to the upward growth in digital technology, the demand for IT professionals is increasing. According to a study by TeamLease, the attrition rate in the IT sector is on the higher side. The average attrition rate in the IT sector
is 8.67%. As per the second quarter results, Wipro has the highest attrition rate at 20.5%, followed by Infosys with 20.1%, while IT major TCS is on the third spot with 11.9% attrition. With the increasing attrition, job opportunities in IT companies are continuously increasing. TCS recruited 43,000 new employees in the first quarter. The company intends to hire 35,000 more freshers in the next six months. There has also been rapid recruitments in Wipro and Infosys. The country is on the path of progress, but caution is equally important. Narvijay Yadav is a senior journalist who has worked with Free Press Journal (FPJ) and Dainik Bhaskar among others. Earlier on Wednesday, a terrorist identified as Adil Ahmad Wani involved in the killing of a carpenter from Uttar Pradesh was among the two terrorists eliminated in an encounter between terrorists and security forces at Dragad area in Jammu and Kashmir’s Shopian district.

NEW DELHI, OCT 20 (IANS): After the Supreme Court asked it to bring on record its “success rate” in prosecuting cases across the country, the CBI has told the top court that it has achieved the conviction rate of about 65-70 per cent, and aims to up it to 75 per cent by August 2022. The central agency pointed out that delay in taking up cases leads to destruction of evidence, and 78 per cent requests for investigation of cases -- mainly pertaining to bank frauds of high magnitude - are pending with eight states. In an affidavit filed in the top court, CBI Director S.K. Jaiswal said: “The harmonious and synergetic working of executive officers in tandem with the law officers of the Directorate of Prosecution, CBI has resulted in achieving the conviction rate of about 6570 per cent over a period of time.” “It is the endeavour of the CBI to bring the present conviction rate to 75 per cent by August 2022.” According to the affidavit, since 2011 till December 31, 2020, the CBI’s conviction percentage has been between 66-70 per cent, and 9,757 cases are pending trial. Nearly 500 cases are over 20 years old, 921 cases two
NEW DELHI, OCT 20 (AGENCIES): For mer Bihar chief minister and BJP ally Jitan Ram Manjhi alleged on Wednesday that five MPs, including a Union minister, have been elected to Lok Sabha from seats reserved for the Scheduled Castes on the basis of “forged” certificates and sought an inquiry. Speaking to reporters after addressing the national executive of his party Hindustani Awam Morcha (Secular) here, Manjhi also said that the Union government may be making efforts to usher in peace in Kashmir but results are not visible as he expressed anguish over the killing of poor migrants, including some from Bihar, by terrorists there. With the country paying tributes to Maharishi Valmiki, who authored epic Ramayana, the Dalit leader stuck to his controversial remark that Lord Ram was a fictional character and said that the saint was “thousands of times bigger” than Ram. “This is my personal view, and I do not want to hurt anyone’s feelings,” he said. In his speech at the party meeting, Manjhi alleged that Union minister S P Singh Baghel and Jaisid-

deshwar Shivacharya Mahaswamiji (both BJP MPs), Congress MP Mohammad Sadique, TMC MP Aparupa Poddar and independent MP Navneet Ravi Rana represent seats reserved for SCs after contesting on the basis of forged certificates. Though there was no immediate reaction from these parliamentarians to his allegations, most of them in the past have denied the charge. Baghel’s aides have asserted that his caste is notified as a Scheduled Caste in Uttar Pradesh from where he has been elected. The Bombay High Court had cancelled Rana’s caste certificate but she got relief from the Supreme Court which had in June stayed the judgment. Majhi claimed that anywhere between 15 to 20
percent of quota benefits for Dalits in jobs and even local body polls are usurped by others on the basis of forged caste certificates. The HAM president announced the dissolution of all organisational bodies of the party and said they will soon be reconstituted. He also demanded a common schooling system for everyone and also a separate electoral roll for Dalits. Common schooling for children from different strata of society will bring equality and then reservations will not be needed if the review of such an education brings out positive outcomes in 10 years, he said. Manjhi’s party is a member of the BJP-led NDA and an ally in the Nitish Kumar-led government in Bihar.
Priyanka Gandhi allowed to go BJP open to alliance with Amarinder : Dushyant Amarinder slams ‘party interference’, to Agra after being detained says Sidhu elevation ‘created bad blood
Priyanka Gandhi Vadra was going to meet the family of a sanitation worker who died in Police custody.
LU C K N OW, O C T 2 0 (IANS): Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra has finally been granted permission to go to Agra after being detained for nearly two hours in Lucknow. The Congress leader has been allowed to proceed to Agra with four persons since Section 144 is in place. She has left for Agra with Uttar Pradesh Congress Committee president Ajay Kumar Lallu, Acharya Pramod Krishnam and Deepak Singh, MLC. Earlier, she told reporters, “Wherever I go, they
stop me. Now they are saying that I cannot go to Agra. Should I sit in a restaurant because it suits them politically? The Congress leader said that she will go to Agra and meet the family of Arun Valmiki who allegedly died in custody. She was earlier detained by Lucknow Police at the Lucknow Expressway while she was travelling to Agra to meet the family of a Dalit man who died in police custody. Her car was stopped at the first toll plaza on the Lucknow-Agra Expressway.
Earlier this month, she was detained in Sitapur while she was on her way to Lakhimpur to meet families of farmers killed on October 3. After she was stopped, Priyanka Gandhi tweeted: “What is the government so afraid of ? Arun Valmiki died in police custody. His family is seeking justice. I want to visit that family. What is the Uttar Pradesh government afraid of ? Why am I being stopped? Today is Lord Valmiki Jayanti... Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke big on Buddha but this is attacking his message.” The police spokesman said that the Congress leader was stopped as she did not have the requisite permissions. In a video of the conversation between the Congress leader and the police, she can be heard asking: “Wherever I go, do I have to ask for permission?” to which the officer says it is a “law and order issue”.

the nation first. All those parties who want to form alliances with us on this agenda are welcome,” he said. Amarinder Singh was once a soldier and his stand on the issues of national security should be praised, the BJP leader said. “....He (Amarinder Singh) was a soldier. He knows about the threats to the country and how to secure it is. He is patriotic. And whenever it was a matter of national security and security at the borders, we have appreciated his stand,” Gautam said, adding that nationalists are not “untouchables” to the BJP. The BJP leader also said that his party has often been critical of Singh on social issues of Punjab.
Former Punjab chief minister Captain Amarinder Singh on Wednesday said that after he left the Congress, he could have either floated a new party or join someone else, adding that he could not have sat at home as he can do a lot for Punjab. The former senior Congress leader said, “Morarji Desai was prime minister at 92, Parkash Badal is 15 years older than me…so why can’t I stay on?” Singh had stepped down from the top post last month citing “humiliation” following an acrimonious power struggle with Punjab MLA Navjot Singh Sidhu, who was appointed as the state Congress president. Talking about the Congress, Singh said the party lost ground very fast in Punjab after Sidhu was made the state president. “About six months ago, they were doing well. One main reason for the decline was (when) Sidhu was made the state party president,” he said, adding that Sidhu’s elevation “created some bad blood”. Singh, who was one of the Congress’ powerful regional satraps, also said he had never experienced “this sort of interference ever as a chief minister.” Raising concerns over the deteriorating security situation of Punjab, Singh said his decision to form a new party is linked to the issue.

Six NDRF teams are deployed in Udham Singh Nagar, two teams each are stationed in Uttarkashi, Chamoli and one each in Dehradun, Champawat Pithoragarh and Haridwar. “Two teams and a subteam have been deployed in Nainital while one subteam is placed at Almora,” the spokesperson said. The weather cleared up Wednesday morning but authorities faced the challenge of rescuing people trapped under debris and restoring road and power links to places cut off by the rains. Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami toured rain-hit areas in Kumaon region, instructing officials to prepare an estimate of the damage. Union Home Minister Amit Shah was also expected to conduct an aerial sur-
vey and visit the state capital Dehradun later in the day. Tourist town Nainital was returning back to normalcy. A furious Gaula river has damaged the tracks at Kathgodam railway station in Nainital, which experienced a record 445 mm rainfall on Tuesday. The district accounts for 29 of the 46 deaths so far. The damaged tracks in Kathgodam may take four or five days to be repaired, DGP Ashok Kumar told PTI. In Nainital, tourists woke up to a bright morning without a trace of rain on Wednesday and were out on the streets for shopping and sightseeing. Taxis had begun running through the town. “It was suffocating to be locked up inside our hotel rooms due to the incessant rains on Tuesday,” a young tourist from Uttar Pradesh said. He added that the scenic beauty of the place had made up for what they had suffered over the last two days. By Wednesday morning, most of the water had receded from the roads in Nainital, where movement had become nearly impossible after Naini lake overflowed. NEW DELHI, OCT 20 (PTI): Amarinder Singh is a patriot and the BJP is open to alliances with those who put national interests first, party general secretary and Punjab in-charge Dushyant Gautam said on Wednesday, a day after Singh announced he would launch his own political party. Singh, the former chief minister of Punjab, on Tuesday said he would soon announce his own political party and is hopeful of a seat arrangement with the BJP if the farmers’ issue is resolved in their interest. On his condition of resolving farmers’ issues, the BJP leader said Singh did not talk about ending the farmers’ agitation. “He talked about farmers’ issues. We are committed to it and are working for the welfare of farmers. If the time comes, both will sit together and discuss farmers’ issues,” Gautam told PTI. As far as the agitation is concerned, it is politically motivated, he alleged. “Our main agenda is nationalism and keeping

NDRF personnel rescuing civilians stranded following heavy rains at Chhara village near Nainital.
DEHRADUN/NEW DELHI, OCT 20 (PTI): Eleven people remained missing, boulders blocked roads and many villages went without electricity as authorities took stock Wednesday of the aftermath of the rains that battered Uttarakhand for over two days. Forty-six people have died due to the rains since Sunday night and some are still feared buried under the debris of collapsed houses. The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) said it has rescued over 1,300 people from floodaffected areas of Uttarakhand. The federal force has deployed 17 rescue teams in the state. “So far, NDRF rescuers have evacuated more than 1,300 stranded people from Udham Singh Nagar and Nanital. They are also distributing relief material in flood-affected areas of

Citing bottlenecks and steps taken to strengthen prosecution, the CBI said it either takes up matters on the reference of state government or on the direction of constitutional courts, which results in a significant time lapse between the actual commission of offence and the date on which the investigation is taken up by it. The CBI is governed by the Delhi Special Police Establishment Act, 1946 and requires consent of the state government, in whose territorial jurisdiction it needs to conduct investigations. Presently, eight states -West Bengal, Maharashtra, Kerala, Punjab, Rajasthan, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, and Mizoram -- have withdrawn the general consent previously granted to it under Section 6 of the DSPE Act. The affidavit cited that CBI has sent over 150 requests to these states during the period 2018 to June 2021 for grant of specific consent for investigation of cases in their territory. “Requests were granted in less than 18 per cent cases, which were related mainly in cases of trapping of corrupt central public servants.

the country and affects our collective energy,” he added. Modi said the previous government lacked the will to control corruption. “The way the earlier government functioned, it lacked the political and administrative will to fight corruption. Today, there is a political will and administrative reforms are also being carried out to achieve the goal,” he said. He said after independence, the mindset of the governments was to keep everything under their control. Those governments kept maximum control with themselves and due to it, the system witnessed many wrong practices, he said. “Maximum control, be it at home, in family or in the country, causes maximum damage, Modi said. We started as a mission to simplify the life of people by reducing controls, we believe in minimum government and maximum governance, he said. The prime minister listed various initiatives taken by his government to curb corruption in the last seven years by using technology and trusting people.

KEVADIA, OCT 20 (PTI): Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday directed officials of the Central Vigilance Commission and the Central Bureau of Investigation to ensure there are no safe havens anywhere in the world for those who betray the country. Virtually addressing a joint conference of the CVC and the CBI at Kevadia in Gujarat, Modi said no matter how powerful a person may be, stern action should be taken against those who work against the interest of the nation or its people. The statement comes at a time when the central government is engaged in legal proceedings to bring back alleged economic offenders like Vijjay Mallya, Nirav Modi and Mehul Chowksi, who have taken refuge in foreign countries. “You have to remember that your partnership is with this ‘mitti’ (soil), with Maa Bharti (Mother India). There should not be any safe havens anywhere in the world for those who betray the country or its people,” the PM said addressing the conference. However powerful one may be, stern action

Tesla lobbies Modi’s office to cut taxes before it enters India NEW DELHI, OCT 20 (AGENCIES): Tesla Inc (TSLA.O) has urged Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s office to slash import taxes on electric vehicles before it enters the market, four sources told Reuters, ratcheting up demands that faced objections from some Indian automakers. Tesla wants to begin selling imported cars in India this year but says taxes in the country are among the highest in the world. Its request for tax cuts - first reported by Reuters in July - prompted objections from several local players, who say such a move would deter investment in domestic manufacturing. Tesla executives, including its head of policy in India, Manuj Khurana, took the company’s demands to Modi’s officials last month in a closed-door meeting, arguing that the
taxes were too high, four sources familiar with the discussions said. During the meeting at Modi’s office, Tesla said that India’s duty structure would not make its business in the country a “viable proposition”, according to one of the sources. India levies an import duty of 60% on electric vehicles that cost $40,000 or less, and 100% duty on those priced over $40,000. Analysts have said that at these rates Tesla cars would become far too costly for buyers and could limit their sales. Tesla has separately also put in a request for a meeting between its Chief Executive Elon Musk and Modi, three of the sources said. Modi’s office and Tesla, as well as its executive Khurana, did not respond to a request for comment.

MUMBAI, OCT 20 (PTI): The rupee on Wednesday surged by 47 paise to close at a nearly two-week high of 74.88 against the US dollar on easing global crude oil prices and rising appetite for riskier assets. Heavy losses in the domestic equity markets, however, put some pressure on the rupee, forex dealers said. “Indian rupee gained the most among emerging market currencies, boosted by lower crude oil prices and dollar demand while market is expecting foreign fund inflows from scheduled QIPs and IPOs in coming weeks. “A rally in Chinese yuan, which placed near four months high against dollar, also supported regional currencies,” Dilip Parmar, Research Analyst, HDFC Securities, said. Oil prices eased by 0.83 per cent to USD 84.37 per barrel after reports that the Chinese government was planning steps to rein in high coal prices and improve supplies.

late last month and early this month pushed several state utilities to schedule power cuts to maintain a balance between demand and supply. Threats of complete power failure also lingered for some time. Even now, over 60 power plants have critical coal stocks levels. “Relaxed coal stocking norms should also better distribution of the fuel amongst generating stations. This would prevent shortages and ensure uninterrupted power supply irrespective of the demand situation in the country,” said an official source privy to the development. Apart from lower stock holding norms, the changes in regulations would also require power plants to stock fuel only to meet generation requirement for 75 per cent of capacity and not 85 per cent or more. This would also lower the fuel requirement for each power plant and enable better distribution amongst all stations.

Govt to revise coal stocking
NEW DELHI, OCT 20 (IANS): In a bid to avert power crisis being triggered in the country due to fuel shortages in the months following monsoon rains, the government proposes revise the coal stocking norms for thermal power plants, based on regular shift stock limits, depending on the actual fuel requirement during a particular period. Sources said that the Central Electricity Authority will come up with revised coal stocking guidelines that will have higher stocking requirement for non-pit head power plants while lower for those located near the coal-bearing regions of the country. As per a draft that is being discussed, against the uniform requirement of 20-22 day coal stocks to be maintained by power plants, lower coal stock of 10 days may be mandated for pit-head power plants while 20 days stock may be needed for power plants farther from coal-producing areas. tacts with the Taliban after they took over the Afghan capital in August. Lavrov commended the Taliban for their efforts to stabilise the military-political situation in the country and ensure the operation of state structures. “We are satisfied with the level of practical interaction with Afghan authorities, which allows to effectively ensure security of Russian citizens in Afghanistan and unimpeded operation of our embassy in Kabul,” Lavrov said in his opening speech at the conference. At the same time, he emphasised the importance
of respecting human rights and pursuing well-balanced social policies, adding that he discussed those issues with the Taliban delegation before the talks. Abdul Salam Hanafi, a deputy prime minister in the Taliban’s interim government, who attended Wednesday’s talks, said “the meeting is very important for stability of the entire region.” Lavrov said that Russia would soon dispatch a shipment of humanitarian aid to Afghanistan and urged the international community to quickly mobilise resources to prevent a humanitarian crisis in the
New airstrikes hit capital of Ethiopia’s Tigray region
People run next to black smoke and flames after an airstrike in Mekele on Oct. 20, 2021.
NA I RO B I , O C T 2 0 (AGENCIES): New airstrikes hit the capital of Ethiopia’s Tigray region, residents said Wednesday, as video showed injured people with bloodied faces being rushed to vehicles and thick black smoke rising in the sky. Ethiopia’s government said it targeted facilities to make and repair weapons, which a spokesman for the rival Tigray forces denied. Meanwhile, the United Nations told The Associated Press it is slashing by more than half its Tigray presence as an Ethiopian government blockade halts humanitarian aid efforts and people die from lack of food. The war in Africa’s second-most populous country has ground on for nearly a year between Ethiopian and
allied forces and the Tigray ones who long dominated the national government before a falling-out with Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, the 2019 Nobel Peace Prize winner. There was no immediate word of deaths from the new airstrikes in Mekele, reported by Kindeya Gebrehiwot of the Tigray external affairs office and confirmed by a resident and a humanitarian worker. One resident said five people were injured, speaking on condition of anonymity for fear of retaliation. “Indeed there have been airstrikes in Mekele today,” Ethiopian government spokesperson Legesse Tulu told the AP, saying they targeted facilities at the Mesfin Industrial En-
gineering site that Tigray forces use to make and repair heavy weapons. Legesse said the airstrikes had “no intended harm to civilians.” “Not at all,” Kindeya with the Tigray forces told the AP, calling the site a garage “with many old tires. That is why it is still blazing.” Amit Abrha, who said she was a worker at the site, said she didn’t hear the airstrike coming and collapsed when the attack occurred. “People picked me up. And when the explosions continued, I went out and saw a person that I know injured and on the ground,” she said in video footage obtained by the AP, as the smoke billowed behind her and fellow residents tried to control the flames. The attack came two days after Ethiopia’s air force confirmed airstrikes in Mekele that a witness said killed three children. The air force said communications towers and equipment were attacked. Mekele hadn’t seen fighting since June, when Tigray forces retook much of the region in a dramatic turn in the war. The airstrikes have caused fresh panic in a city under siege, where doctors and others have described running out of medicines and other basic needs.
country. The Soviet Union fought a 10-year war in Afghanistan that ended with its troops withdrawing in 1989. In recent years, Moscow has made a strong comeback as an influential power broker in international talks on Afghanistan, hosting the Taliban representatives and members of other factions for bilateral and multilateral meetings. Along with the Taliban and other Afghan factions, the so-called Moscow format talks held since 2017 also include representatives of China, Pakistan, Iran, India and ex-Soviet nations in Central Asia. Wednesday’s talks were preceded earlier this week by a meeting of top diplomats from Russia, China and Pakistan. The US, which is also part of that “extended troika” format didn’t attend the meeting. Last week, President Vladimir Putin noted that there must be no rush in officially recognizing the Taliban as the new rulers of Afghanistan, but emphasised the need to engage in talks with them. At the same time, Putin and other Russian officials emphasised the threats
posed by the Islamic State group and other militants based in northern Afghanistan, and noted that drug trafficking from Afghanistan will continue to present a challenge. “Numerous terrorist groups, notably the Islamic State and al-Qaida are trying to take advantage of the instability in the country mounting bloody attacks,” Lavrov said. “There is a real danger of terrorism and drugs spilling into the neighboring nations under the guise of migration.” Russia’s top diplomat urged the Taliban “not to allow the territory of Afghanistan from being used against the interests of any third countries, primarily its neighbours, our friends and allies in Central Asia.” Russia has vowed to provide military assistance to its ex-Soviet allies in Central Asia to help counter the threats, and held a series of joint drills in Uzbekistan and Tajikistan that neighbour Afghanistan. Another sweeping military exercise in Tajikistan involving 5,000 troops, more than 700 military vehicles and combat jets has started this week.
Covid outbreaks in China linked to a tour group
UK, Israel seeing rise in Delta plus Covid variant
NEW DELHI, OCT 20 (IANS): Virus that has triggered new outbreaks of Covid-19 linked to a tour group of seniors from Shanghai, that has affected several regions of China, likely stemmed from overseas, Chinese health experts said as more than 20 positive cases linked to the contacts of the group have been reported so far, Global Times reported. The group likely came into contact with the virus which may have arrived through port cities in Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, although where exactly it came from and how it came into China is unknown, health experts said. The experts noted that the prevalent Covid-19 variants such as Delta now circulating globally could survive longer on products in cold weather, which may have triggered community transmission. Beijing on Tuesday reported a locally transmitted Covid-19 case, who returned to the capital from Northwest China’s Gansu Province, another case linked to the tour group that had spread the virus to seven provincial regions and cities.
South Africa stumbles upon new treasure VIRGINIA (SOUTH AFRICA), OCT 20 (AGENCIES): In a grassy plain in South Africa, once the world’s largest gold producer, prospectors have stumbled upon a new treasure: helium. Po p u l a r ly k n ow n for birthday balloons and squeaky voices, helium plays an underappreciated role in medical scanners, superconductors, and space travel. It’s also rare -- produced by fewer than 10 countries and often treated as a waste product in natural gas wells. Natural gas is what Stefano Marani and Nick Mitchell had on their minds when they bought gas rights on this 87,000-hectare piece of land in the Free State province in 2012, for just $1. When they had their gas finds tested, they discovered unusually high amounts of helium mixed in with the gas that mean their dollar investment could be worth billions. Their company Renergen is almost ready to start producing both natural gas and helium, placing South Africa on an elite map with helium reserves that could
Tests have found gas with concentrations of helium much larger than in commercial wells in other countries.
be the richest and cleanest in the world. Those first tests revealed helium concentrations of two to four percent. In the United States, helium is extracted at concentrations as low as 0.3 per cent. “That was when we knew we had something special,” Marani said. “It really was right place, right time.” Further exploration has found concentrations as high as 12 percent, Renergen says. Other major producers are Qatar and Algeria. The global helium market was worth $10.6 billion in 2019, according to the
firm Research and Markets. Since few countries produce helium, supplies are frequently disrupted. Renergen estimates its helium reserve could be as much as 9.74 billion cubic meters -- larger than the known reserves in the entire United States. That’s enough to fill about 1.4 trillion party balloons. If proven, Marani said those reserves would be worth over $100 billion (86 million euros). More conservative estimates remain substantial at 920 million cubic meters. Chris Ballentine, chair of geochemistry at the Uni-

versity of Oxford, said helium is usually produced as part of liquified natural gas operations. Companies often treat it as a bonus, if they bother to separate it out. What sets South Africa’s find apart is how the gas is extracted. Natural gas is often obtained by fracking, a process that injects water, sand and chemicals into bedrock under high pressure to split it to release any oil and gas trapped inside. But fracking also contaminates groundwater and causes small earthquakes that can ruin nearby homes and buildings. “We don’t frack,” Marani said. “Our rock has already cracked, there’s a giant fracture underground. And so when we drill, we’re literally drilling just into that giant fracture where the gas is and then the gas escapes naturally with no stimulation at all.” Renergen plans to have 19 wells installed by early next year. Gas currently extracted is being used as compressed natural gas in a pilot project to run buses.
NEW DELHI/LONDON, OCT 20 (IANS): The UK and Israel are witnessing a surge in Covid-19 infections due to a new descendant of the Delta variant AY.4.2, also called the “Delta Plus” variant. While Delta is the UK’s dominant variant, AY.4.2 delta sublineage is currently increasing in frequency. It includes spike mutations A222V and Y145H, which might give the virus survival advantages, according to the latest report from the UK Health Security Agency. AY.4.2 delta “sublineage accounted for approximately 6 per cent of all sequences generated, on an increasing trajectory”, the report said. “Delta remains the predominant variant... a Delta sublineage newly-designated as AY.4.2 is noted to be expanding in England. It is now a signal in monitoring and assessment has commenced,” it added. Although tests are underway to understand how much of a threat this Delta sub-variant may pose, experts say it is unlikely to take off in a big way or escape current vaccines, the BBC reported. “It is potentially a marginally more infectious strain. It is nothing compared with what we
DAMASCUS, OCT 20 (AP): Two bombs attached to a bus carrying Syrian troops exploded in Damascus during the morning rush hour Wednesday, a military official said. Fourteen people were killed in the attack, one of the deadliest in the capital in years. While the Syrian government’s decade-long conflict with insurgents continues in parts of the country including the rebel-held northwest, bombings in Damascus have become exceedingly rare since President Bashar Assad’s troops pushed opposition fighters from the capital’s suburbs in 2018. The explosions, which also left several wounded, happened at a busy intersection, near a main bus transfer point where commuters and schoolchildren typically converge. After the blasts, Syrian state TV showed footage of smoke rising from a charred bus as soldiers hosed down the vehicle and onlookers flocked to a nearby bridge to watch. So we are talking about something quite subtle here and that is currently under investigation,” Prof. Francois Balloux, director of University College London’s Genetics Institute, was quoted as saying to BBC. “It is likely to be up to 10 per cent more transmissible,” he added. The British government is keeping a “very close eye” on rising levels of Covid-19 infections, Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s spokesperson said on Tuesday. In Israel, an 11-yearold boy returning from Moldova to the country has been identified as Covid-19 positive, carrying the novel Delta variant AY4.2, the only recorded case in Israel of the new strand of the coronavirus, the Jerusalem Post reported. The child was tested in Ben-Gurion Airport upon his arrival and has since been in self-isolation, the Health Ministry said on Tuesday.

Civilians, among them many children, keep bearing the brunt of a brutal decade-long conflict,” the agency said. “Attacks on civilians including children are a violation of international humanitarian law.” The attack was one of the most violent in the area since a March 2020 truce in the northwest negotiated by Turkey and Russia — allies of the opposition and Syrian government, respectively.
Another 43,738 people in the UK have tested positive for Covid-19 as the country recorded more than 40,000 Covid cases on the seventh consecutive day. It brought the total number of coronavirus cases in the country to 8,541,192. There are currently 7,749 patients in hospital with Covid-19.

MOSCOW, OCT 20 (AP): Russia hosted talks on Afghanistan on Wednesday involving senior representatives of the Taliban and neighbouring nations, a round of diplomacy that underlines Moscow’s clout. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov opened the talks and emphasized that “forming a really inclusive government fully reflecting the interests of not only all ethnic groups but all political forces of the country” is necessary to achieve a stable peace in Afghanistan. Russia had worked for years to establish contacts with the Taliban, even though it has designated the group a terror organisation in 2003 and never took it of the list. Any contact with such groups is punishable under Russian law, but the Foreign Ministry has responded to questions about the apparent contradiction by saying that its exchanges with the Taliban are essential for helping stabilise Afghanistan. Unlike many other countries, Russia hasn’t evacuated its embassy in Kabul and its ambassador has maintained regular con-

Some doctors think this is caused by not getting enough nutrients from fruits, beans, veggies, and whole grains -- foods not allowed, or strictly limited, on a keto diet. One study found people with mild chronic kidney disease on the keto diet did OK with close medical supervision. But others show those who eat any diet high in red meat and low in whole grains, lowfat dairy, and fruit are 97% more likely to get kidney disease. This is partly why some dietitians advise against doing extreme lowcarb diets on your own. It Can Help Control Seizures People have used the keto diet for some 100 years to treat epilepsy, mainly in children who don’t respond to meds. It means that someone will have to watch you and do frequent lab checks and urine tests. Studies go on as to how the keto diet might also help people with brain disorders like Parkinson’s disease. There aren’t any firm results yet, though. (Health Day Reporter)

your digestive tract. Your stomach might feel too full and hurt. If you stay wellhydrated and get enough electrolytes (minerals that help balance your body water and nourish your cells), your symptoms might not be as serious or last as long. Your Breath Might Smell Weird When your body runs on fatty acids instead of carbs, it releases ketones through your breath as acetone. Your breath might smell fruity or sweet. Some say it tastes like decaying apple. Also, if your mouth is dry, you can have bad breath. That’s because there’s not enough saliva to get rid of bacteria and extra food particles in your mouth. So stay hydrated. Your Blood Sugar Levels Might Dip A super low-carb diet can lower your blood sugar levels. This can help if you have diabetes. But in true ketosis, hypoglycemia is a
risk. This happens when your blood sugar dips too low. The go-to treatment is to have 15 grams of carbs to raise it. If it’s still too low after 15 minutes, you’ll need another 15 grams. If you have diabetes, check your sugars often and know that you may need to adjust your meds while on this diet. It Can Tax Your Heart Very low-carb diets also are high-fat. Your saturated fat intake should be no more than 5% to 6% of your total. Focus on healthy fats like those in avocados, olives, and nuts. On the keto diet (as well as less strict low-carb diets like Atkins and Paleo), your triglycerides and HDL (“good”) cholesterol levels will likely get better. But you may see a rise in LDL, or “bad” cholesterol, which can also lead to heart disease. Yo u M i g h t F e e l Moody Your state of mind can get wonky when you sharply cut healthy carbs that send sugar to the brain. You might feel grouchy. One study found people who followed low-carb diets over time had less serotonin in their brains than those who were on low-fat diets. arbs are a basic nutrient your body turns into glucose, or blood sugar, to make energy for your body to work. A very low-carb diet, like keto and the early phase of the Atkins Diet, triggers your body into nutritional ketosis. Your liver starts to make ketones -- a fuel that kicks in when your body doesn’t have enough sugar to run on -- by breaking down fat. How Low Is LowCarb? To b r i n g a b o u t nutritional ketosis, extreme low-carb diets cap your carb intake at less than 10% of your total macronutrient (carbs, fat, and protein) intake. That translates to 20 to 50 grams a day of carbs. Low-carb diets generally shoot for under 26% of nutrition intake, or 130 grams. You’ll Lose Water Weight A sudden lack of carbs will make you lose weight. It’s mostly water weight at first, though. This is mostly because cutting carbs also wipes out the glycogen stores in your muscles. Glycogen helps your body retain water. You may also lose some salt along with the carbs you cut out. When you start to eat carbs again, the water weight comes right back. It takes 2 to 3 weeks for ketosis to rev up and start to burn fat. T20 WC: India thrash Aus in warm-up game PTSA 5th inter-ward tourney begins
DUBAI, OCT 20 (IANS): Team India produced a clinical performance with both bat and ball as they thrashed Australia by 9 wickets in their second warm-up game, ahead of the Super 12 stage of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2021, here on Wednesday. Indian bowlers, especially spinners, picked crucial wickets at regular intervals and restricted Australia to 152/5 in 20 overs. Chasing 153 for victory, openers gave India a brisk start with KL Rahul once again being the aggressor. Against the spinners, Rahul looked at absolute ease as he smashed Agar and Zampa down the ground for two sixes and a four. Rohit, at the other end, was happy to play second fiddle. Rahul eventually fell to Ashton Agar, trying to clear the boundary once again only to find David Warner in the deep. By the time Rahul was out, Sharma had got his eye in

and took over the mettle of run-scoring. He brought up his half-century with a wonderful cut off Marcus Stoinis. Suryakumar Yadav, who came to bat at Number 3, too got some valuable runs to boost his confidence
ahead of India’s Super 12 opener against Pakistan. Both, Rohit and Suryakumar made batting look easy as they hit a flurry of boundaries. When India needed 26 off 30, Rohit decided to retire himself out to
give Hardik Pandya some much-needed game time and it was eventually him who sealed the game with a straight six, with 13 balls remaining. Earlier in the day, Australia skipper Aaron Finch chose to bat first against the
Rohit Sharma-led Indian team. India chose to start with spin at one end and reaped instant rewards as Ashwin sent David Warner and Mitchell Marsh back to the pavilion off consecutive balls. R av i n d r a Ja d e j a scalped Aaron Finch off his first ball after which Steve Smith and Glenn Maxwell have steadied the ship as Australia go into the drinks break at 57/3. Just when it looked like Maxwell was getting in the groove, Rahul Chahar got the better of him with the googly. Steve Smith soon brought up a well-made half-century after smashing Shardul Thakur for three consecutive fours. Stoinis’s unbeaten 25-ball 41 helped Australia post 152/5 at the end of 20. Brief Scores: Australia 152/5 (Steve Smith 57, Marcus Stoinis 41; Ravichandran Ashwin 2-8) vs India 153/2 (Rohit Sharma 60, KL Rahul 39; Ashton Agar 1-14).

Federal Immigration Minister Alex Hawke on Wednesday confirmed the state’s ruling during an interview with ABC News. “The government, in establishing its borders, has said that you’ll need to be double vaccinated to visit Australia,” said Hawke. “That’s a universal application, not just to tennis players. NSF Martyrs Trophy: Bandits, T20 WC: SL beat Ireland by 70 runs Asufü, Head Hunters progress
ABU DHABI, OCT 20 ( I A N S ) : A wo n d e r f u l counter-attack by Wanindu Hasaranga (71 off 47 balls) and Pethum Nissanka (61 off 47 balls) followed by a clinical bowling performance propelled Sri Lanka to secure a dominant 70-run win over Ireland in in a Group A match of Round 1 in the ICC men’s T20 World Cup at the Sheikh Zayed Stadium here on Wednesday. The win also means that the 2014 champions have all but confirmed their spot in the Super 12 stage of the tournament. The victory was set up by half-centuries from Hasaranga and Nissanka sharing a stand of 123 runs for the fourth wicket. The duo lifted Sri Lanka from 8/3 in the first 10 balls to 171/7 in 20 overs. In reply, Ireland was all out for 101 in 18.3 overs as the Sri Lanka pacers struck early before the spinners stemmed the run-flow in middle overs as Ireland lost their last seven wickets for just 16 runs. Chasing 172, Ireland lost openers Kevin O’Brien (5) and Paul Stirling (7) in 2.3 overs. While O’Brien top-edged to short fine leg off Chamika Karunaratne in the first over, Maheesh Theekshana dismissed Stirling in a similar manner in the third over. Two overs
struck a six and four on the last two balls of the innings to remain unbeaten on 21 off just 11 balls, taking Sri Lanka beyond 170. Brief scores: Sri Lanka 171/7 in 20 overs (Wanindu Hasaranga 71, Pethum Nissanka 61, Josh Little 4/23, Mark Adair 2/35) against Ireland 101 all out (Andy Balbirnie 41, Curtis Campher 24, Maheesh Theekshana 3/17, Lahiru Kumara 2/22) by 70 runs.

later, Gareth Delany was bowled by a googly from Wanindu Hasaranga. Curtis Campher and Andy Balbirnie shared a stand of 53 runs for the fourth wicket before the former was clean bowled by Theekshana in the 13th over. That started the downfall of Ireland as Harry Tector (3), Neil Rock (1) and Mark Adair (2) fell in quick succession. With Balbirnie (41) slicing to point off Lahiru Kumara in the 16th over, the writing was clear on the wall for Ireland. Karunaratne and Dushmantha Chameera took the remaining wickets to secure Sri Lanka’s second win of the
tournament. Earlier, Sri Lanka lost Kusal Perera without troubling the scorers on the second ball of the innings. In the next over, pacer Joshua Little bowled Dinesh Chandimal (6) and Avishka Fernando on back-to-back deliveries to put Sri Lanka in deep trouble at 8 for three in 1.4 overs. From there, Hasaranga and Nissanka staged an excellent fightback for Sri Lanka, stitching a 123run partnership in 82 balls. Hasaranga was more aggressive of the two, smashing off-spinner Simi Singh for four consecutive boundaries in the final over of power-play. Their counter-
attack coupled with exquisite shots rattled Ireland, who resorted to bowling wider lines and got dispatched for runs. Hasaranga brought up his maiden T20I half-century in 38 balls with a brace off Craig Young in the 13th over. Nissanka brought up his half-century in the 16th over. But on the very next ball, a visibly exhausted Hasaranga sliced to short third man off Mark Adair. Though Bhanuka Rajapaksa (1) and Karunaratne (2) fell cheaply, Nissanka struck two more boundaries before toe-ending behind to the keeper to become Little’s fourth scalp of the day. Neeraj Chopra returns to training after historic feat NEW DELHI, OCT 20 (PTI): Star javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra has returned to training at the NIS-Patiala more than two months after he clinched a historic gold at the Tokyo Olympics in August. Chopra, who became only the second Indian individual Olympic gold winner and first ever top podium finisher in athletics, was on
a break after his historic feat on August 7 in Tokyo. “Returned to training this week with the same hunger and desire as before. A #throwback to the beginning of the last Olympic cycle is a good place to start! Thank you to everyone for your messages of support,” he tweeted on Wednesday, along with a photo of his training. The 23-year-old
Chopra, who had won an Olympic gold with a throw of 87.58m, had said that his next target would be to win a medal in the World Championships in the US next year. He also recently said that he would want to continue training with German bio-mechanics expert Klaus Bartonietz for the 2024 Paris Olympics.
ODENSE, OCT 20 (PTI): Young Lakshya Sen thumped compatriot Sourabh Verma in straight games to enter the second round but it was curtains for Saina Nehwal at the Denmark Open Super 1000 tournament here on Wednesday. Lakshya, who had finished runners-up at Dutch Open last Sunday, dished out a superb performance to outclass national champion Sourabh 21-9 21-7 in 26 minutes. The 20-year-old from Almora, who had failed to make the cut for the Sudirman Cup and Thomas Cup Final after losing his only match in the trials, is likely to clash with second seed and Olympic champion Viktor Axelsen of Denmark next. Liverpool battle to CL win as Messi fires PSG
PARIS, OCT 20 (AGENCIES): Liverpool survived an Atletico Madrid fightback to win 3-2 and Lionel Messi scored twice as Paris Saint-Germain came from behind to beat RB Leipzig by the same score on a breathless night of Champions League action on Tuesday. In other games, Karim Benzema netted for Real Madrid as the 13-time European champions thrashed Shakhtar Donetsk 5-0 in Ukraine on the eve of the start of his trial in France on charges of complicity in blackmail. Much of the night’s drama happened at the Wanda Metropolitano in the Spanish capital where Mohamed Salah scored another impressive goal, twisting away from a string of Atletico defenders before his shot deflected in off James Milner to open the scoring. Naby Keita doubled Liverpool’s lead with a stunning volley but Atletico hit back with French international Antoine Griezmann scoring twice to fire up the home crowd. Just as Atletico seemed to have the upper hand, Griezmann was given a
Lionel Messi straight red card for a high boot in the face of Roberto Firmino. A pulsating game was decided from the penalty spot in the 78th minute as Salah sent Jan Oblak the wrong way after Mario Hermoso pushed Diogo Jota. The Egyptian’s 31st Champions League goal makes him the club’s top scorer in the competition, overtaking Steven Gerrard. In a dramatic finish, Atletico were denied a penalty when the referee studied the VAR and decided Jota had not fouled Jose Maria Gimenez. Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp told BT Sport: “We played a really solid second half in a tough game
with intense football from both teams. “We got the penalty, then there was a red card and obviously it was in our favour.” The Reds are top of Group B with three wins out of three while Atletico are equal on four points with Porto, who beat AC Milan 1-0 in Portugal. At the Parc des Princes, Messi scored twice and Kylian Mbappe sparkled but later missed a penalty as PSG came from behind to beat RB Leipzig 3-2. Mbappe had given the Qatar-backed club the lead but a Leipzig side crushed 6-3 at Manchester City earlier in the competition held their own. Leipzig went ahead through goals
from Andre Silva and Nordi Mukiele as PSG suddenly looked disjointed. But Messi was set up by Mbappe for the equaliser and then deftly chipped in a 74th-minute penalty awarded for a foul on the France striker. Mbappe’s missed spot kick proved unimportant. PSG top Group A with seven points but Manchester City bounced back from their defeat in Paris in the last matchday by crushing Club Brugge 5-1 in Belgium. Pep Guardiola declared City’s win “one of the best performances in Europe we’ve done so far” after Riyad Mahrez scored twice and 19-year-old Cole Palmer was among City’s scorers. In Kiev, Benzema, who is due to go on trial in France on Wednesday in the “sextape” case involving his former international teammate Mathieu Valbuena, scored the final goal in Real’s rout of Shakhtar. A first-half own goal from Serhiy Kryvtsov put Real on their way before Vinicius Junior scored two superb goals and set up Rodrygo for the fourth before Benzema completed the job.
Lakshya Sen world number 20 Aya Ohori and lost 21-16 21-14 in the opening round. Former top 10 player HS Prannoy also bowed out of the competition after losing 18-21 19-21 to sixth seeded Indonesian Jonatan Christie, while 2014 Commonwealth Games champion Parupalli kashyap retired after being 0-3 down against fourth seed Chou Tien Chen of Chinese Taipei. The Indian doubles players had a dismal outing as, apart from Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Ashwini Ponnappa, none of the oth-
ers could put up a fight in their respective matches. While Satwik and Ashwini’s gallant battle ended with a 17-21 21-14 11-21 loss to China’s Feng Yan Zhe and Du Yue in mixed doubles, Meghana Jakkampudi and Poorvisha S Ram lost 8-21 7-21 to Indonesian combination of Nita Violina Marwah and Putri Syaikah in women’s doubles. Commonwealth Games bronze medallists Ashwini and N Sikki Reddy also went down 17-21 13-21 to second seeded Korean pair of Lee Sohee and Shin Seungchan. Lakshya had claimed five titles in 2019 before COVID-19 forced the suspension of the BWF calender. On Wednesday, the world number 25 Indian was up against Sourabh, an opponent against whom he had lost twice in the past but it made no difference as Lakshya dished out a dominating show to blow him away.

Halep beats Potapova in Kremlin Cup opener, Jabeur retires
Simona Halep M O S C OW, O C T 2 0 (AGENCIES): Simona Halep started her campaign at the Kremlin Cup with a straight-sets win on Tuesday, while Ons Jabeur retired from her first-round match. Halep won 6-1, 6-4 against Anastasia Potapova despite losing her serve three times and next plays Veronika Kudermetova in the second round after the Russian beat 18-year-old qualifier Oksana Selekhmetova 4-6, 7-6 (3), 6-4. Halep hasn’t won more than three consecutive matches since returning in August from a three-month layoff with a calf injury that kept her out of the French Open and Wimbledon.
Eighth-ranked Jabeur retired when 6-1, 1-0 down against Ekaterina Alexandrova. There was no immediate information from the Tunisian or the WTA about the reason for her retirement, which makes it harder for Jabeur to qualify for the WTA Finals. Marketa Vondrousova eliminated seventh-seeded Elena Rybakina 6-4, 6-4 and plays qualifier Lesia Tsurenko in the next round. Anett Kontaveit won 6-3, 6-3 against Katerina Siniakova to set up a second-round match with experienced German Andrea Petkovic, who was leading 2-6, 6-0, 2-0 when her opponent Jelena Ostapenko retired.
