While stating that the government is governed by the law, Serto opined that: “If every administrator, bureaucrat, legislator studies law for three years, they will become better at their profession,” adding that law was dynamic, a continuous process and subject to change to feed the need of the society. While maintaining that law was the “science of life”; Justice Serto said “it gives a person the way to live, to differentiate between the right and wrongs, one’s duties towards others and society and other’s duties towards us.” (Cont’d on p-8)
‘21 central excise cut of Rs. 5 on Petrol & Rs. 10 on Diesel. It underlines PM Modi Ji’s unwavering commitment to concerns of citizens & showcases PM’s leadership in crisis, despite refusal by some states to reduce prices & extraordinary supply constraints,” tweeted Oil Minister Hardeep Puri. Presently, petrol is selling at over Rs. 100 in most parts of the country. The rates vary across states due to the value-added tax (VAT). India is heavily dependent on imports to meet its oil needs and the domestic petrol and diesel prices are linked to international rates. April saw India’s wholesale and consumer prices accelerate at their fastest in years, prompting the central bank to hike interest rates at an unscheduled policy meeting this month.

CPO backs PDMGDVA demand; asks govt to file affidavit
DIMAPUR, MAY 21 (NPN): Chakhesang Public Organisation (CPO), while extending support to Phek District Maytas-Gayatri Damaged Victim Association (PDMGDVA)’s demand to the State Government to file “self-appealed additional affidavit” in the High Court on or before May 25, fervently appealed to the government to do so in order to avert further agitation by the association.
In a press note, CPO vice president Vecito Dozo and general secretary Chepetso Koza said it had file a PIL in the court in December 2019 on behalf of victims, which otherwise was overdue, and since then the matter came before the court 22 times up to May 11, 2022. Unfortunately, CPO said the case had been dragged on for nearly 3 years, alleging delay tactics adopted both by state and the Central govern-
ment. Such has led to public protest on several occasions like-- total road blockade and cessation of the ongoing two-lane road construction in the district, causing inconvenience to the public and developmental activities. It was only after the intervention of both CPO and state government, the agitators were pacified and the work could progress till date. (Cont’d on p-8)
H&FW dept on status of medical college in Kohima D I M A P U R , M AY 2 1 (NPN): State Health & Family Welfare (H&FW) department has issued a statement through DIPR on the status of the medical college at Phriebagei-- Nagaland Institute of Medical Science and Research. It said that the Health ministry had approved the establishment of the medical college with an intake capacity of 100 MBBS seats at District Hospital Kohima (NHAK) at the cost of Rs. 189 crores under the Centrally Sponsored Scheme
for “establishment of new medical colleges by upgrading district/ referral hospitals” in 2014. As per the guideline of the scheme, one of the eligibility criteria was District hospitals/referral hospital with bed strength of 200 or more. Further, private hospitals were not eligible under the scheme, it added. Though the college will initially function from two plots-- administrative, academic, hostels, and staff quarters at Phriebagie, H&FW said that the teaching hospital will be at Naga
Authority Hospital Kohima (NHAK), which was permissible under the regulations of National Medical Commission (NMC). However, due to space constraints and instability of land at NHAK campus, the department said it was difficult to develop the hospital to 500 bedded teaching hospital, which must be in place by 3rd Inspection as per NMC regulations. Therefore, it said a dedicated 500 bedded teaching hospital will be established at Phriebagie, and the construction of a 150
bedded hospital at Phriebagie through State Resources was nearing completion, even as the department has approached Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) for setting up a 400 bedded teaching hospital. Though Centre had approved setting up of medical college at Kohima in 2014, acquisition of land was completed only in February 2018, master plan approved in October 2018 and the construction works commenced from 2019.

He said the Act is required to regulate existing gambling parlours which have been there for the past 25 years in the hill state. “If we repeal (the Act) then there will be nothing to regulate and we will only be losing close to Rs 8 crore to Rs 10 crore of revenue,” the Chief Minister told reporters on Friday night. His statement came in the
wake of the growing demands from certain Church bodies and organisations for repealing the MRGA, 2021. The CM, however, assured that the state government has no intention to come up with casinos anywhere in or around major towns and cities of the state. “If there is a way which we can get revenue and at the same time ensure we don’t allow it to be part of Shillong and other major towns so that our youth are not impacted and ensure our youth don’t play and none of the citizens of Meghalaya is allowed to play, we are examining all those aspects,” he said.

Assam-Arunachal border row to be resolved by next year: Shah D E O M A L I , M AY 2 1 (PTI): Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Saturday said that the inter-state boundary dispute between Arunachal Pradesh and Assam is likely to be resolved by next year. Asserting that efforts are underway to make Northeast insurgency-free, he claimed 9,000 militants from the region have surrendered during the last eight years of the Narendra Modi government at the Centre. Addressing the golden jubilee celebrations of Ramakrishna Mission School at Narottam Nagar in Tirap district of Arunachal Pradesh, Shah said that the Centre is committed to bringing peace and development to the region. He said that the governments of Arunachal Pradesh and Assam were working for an amicable and permanent resolution of the inter-state boundary dispute. “Youths of Northeast no longer carry guns and petrol bombs. They are now carrying laptops and are launching startups. This

is the path of development that the Centre has envisaged for the region,” he said. “Manipur, which was earlier known for bandhs and blockades for more than 200 days a year, is now witnessing a sea of change without any bandh during the last five years of BJP rule in the state,” he said. Shah said that the insurgency in the Bodoland region of Assam was resolved through the signing of the Bodo Peace Accord. “Surrender of militant groups in Tripura and resolving of the Bru refugee issue was undertaken by the Modi government. The Union Home Ministry has taken initiatives to bring peace to Assam’s Karbi Anglong,” he said.
IMPHAL, MAY 21: Opposition Congress was sceptical that the drive to end poppy cultivation as a part of BJP-led government’s war on drug 2.0 mission will yield effective results. “If the government is actually committed, there is no reason to take years to abolish poppy cultivation as it can be destroyed within a week,” MPCC president K Meghachandra said. Talking on the sideline of the observance of 31st death anniversary of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi which the nation observed as Anti-Terrorism Day, the MPCC president alleged that the government’s assertion of ending the poppy cultivation in the state in five years was not reasonable. “We are sceptical. If the government has the guts, poppy cultivation can be abolished at any time. Taking years to do so is not reasonable,” he reiterated. He said that the poppy cultivation menace was not

Sidhu lodged in Barrack No.10 of BJP’s ‘deep state’ chewing India: Rahul Patiala jail; skips dinner on first night
Gets panned for ‘betrayal’ from foreign soil
NEW DELHI, MAY 21 (PTI): The “deep state” in India is “chewing” the Indian state much like in Pakistan, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has said in a frontal attack on the Modi government, provoking a predictable backlash Saturday from the ruling party which branded him a “parttime, immature, unsuccessful leader” who betrayed the country with his remarks made on foreign soil. During an interactive session at the ‘Ideas for India’ conference in London on Friday, Gandhi not only mounted a scathing attack on the BJP government but also extended an olive branch to regional parties
who he had angered with his comment that they were not capable of taking on the saffron party for want of ideology. In a blistering assault, Gandhi said the soul of India is under attack from the BJP and “a soul without a voice means nothing and what has happened is that India’s voice has been crushed”. Gandhi alleged India’s voice has been crushed by the institutional framework of the country itself which is becoming parasitical. “So, the deep state, the CBI, the ED, is now chewing the Indian state and eating it, much like in Pakistan,” he asserted. An angry BJP shot back on Saturday, accusing Gandhi of harming India in his “hate” against Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and alleged his frequent critical remarks about the
Rahul Gandhi
country from foreign soil amounted to “betrayal”. BJP spokesperson Gaurav Bhatia launched a sharp attack on the Congress leader for his remarks at the London event where Gandhi accused the ruling party of spreading “kerosene all over the country, you need one spark and we will be in big trouble”. It is the Cong ress which has been carrying kerosene to incite riots since the 1984 anti-Sikh riots, he
alleged, dubbing Gandhi a “part-time, immature, unsuccessful leader of a hopeless Congress” who has often spoken negatively about the country in foreign places like the US, the UK and Singapore. “He keeps making such comments frequently and it will not be wrong to say that this amounts to betraying the country,” Bhatia said. At the ‘Ideas for India’ conference organised by non-profit think-tank Bridge India, Gandhi was at pains to explain away his remarks targeting the regional parties, saying the Congress respects them and does not want to play “the Big Daddy”. The former Congress chief asserted his party will coordinate with regional outfits to launch a nationwide movement against the ruling dispensation and
reach out to people in a big way. “We have to coordinate with our friends in the opposition. I don’t view the Congress as the ‘Big Daddy’. It is a group effort with the opposition. But it is a fight to regain India,” he said at the conclave. A video of the event was released by the Congress on Saturday. “The point I made in Udaipur, which was misconstrued, is that this is an ideological battle now. It is a national ideological battle, which means that of course we respect the DMK as a Tamil political organisation, but the Congress is the party that has the ideology at the national level,” Gandhi said. So, the Congress will have to think about itself as a structure that is enabling the opposition, he said during the hour-long interaction.
PATIALA, MAY 21 (PTI): Congress leader Navjot Singh Sidhu, who has been sentenced to one-year jail term in a road-rage case, has been lodged in Barrack No.10 at the central jail here and didn’t have dinner on the first night, sources said on Saturday. Sidhu has been lodged in the barrack with four other prisoners, said the sources. He didn’t have dinner as he had already taken his meal, they said, adding that the former state Congress chief is prisoner number 1,37,683. The 58-year-old former cricketer on Friday had surrendered before a court here and later sent to the Patiala Central Jail. He was sentenced to one-year rigorous imprisonment by the Supreme Court in the 1988 road-rage case.
Navjot Sidhu being taken to Patiala jail.
As Sidhu has to undergo rigorous imprisonment, he will also have to work in the prison. Another high-profile prisoner lodged in jail here in connection with a drug case is Shiromani Akali Dal leader Bikram Singh Majithia, who had contested against Sidhu from Amritsar East. Sidhu and Majithia had both lost the elections to AAP’s Jeevan Jyot Kaur.
The SC had on Thursday sentenced Sidhu to oneyear rigorous imprisonment in the 34-year-old case, saying any undue sympathy in imposing an inadequate sentence would do more harm to the justice system and undermine the public confidence in the efficacy of law. A 65-year-old man, Gurnam Singh, had died in the incident.

MUMBAI, MAY 21 (PTI): The Congress has left its leadership issue unresolved at its Chintan Shivir held recently and the party’s present condition is miserable, which is not good for the country’s democracy, the Shiv Sena said on Saturday. In an editorial in party mouthpiece ‘Saamana’, the party said that while on the one hand the BJP has already started preparing for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, the Congress is in dire straits. “Rahul Gandhi has left several issues unresolved at the party’s Udaipur conclave. Which is why several leaders in different states are deserting the party. Bihar and Uttar Pradesh units of the Congress don’t have state presidents,” the Uddhav Thackeray-led party, which currently shares power with the NCP and Congress in Maharashtra, said. The decision of leaders, including Sunil Jakhar, Hardik Patel, Jyotiraditya Scindia and Jitin Prasada, to leave the Congress shows the failure of the party leadership, it added. The Congress should stand by its leaders with mass base in states that are going to polls in the near future, the Sena suggested.

Modi was referring to the re-kindled debate on the language issue that evoked sharp reaction in few non-Hindi speaking states like Tamil Nadu and Karnataka and some north eastern states. The Prime Minister also cautioned the nation against such controversies and said all Indian languages were worth worshipping. Modi acknowledged that language diversity is the pride of the country, but attempts are being made to spark controversies over it. Prime Minister’s stand on the language issue was welcomed by Kannada film actor Kichcha Sudeep, whose reaction to Ajay Devgan’s declaration that Hindi was national language, sparked off a heated debate on social media and on the ground. Karnataka is going for local body polls in a few weeks and will be going for general elections to Assembly next year. Tamil Nadu has always been aggressively fighting what it claims “attempts to impose Hindi” and forcefully articulates its position on the language issue. However, leaders like DMK president and Chief Minister MK Stalin, make it clear that neither he nor his party was antiHindi but was very concerned over efforts to force Hindi, directly or indirectly. The prime minister has said what India wants to know and hear. Be that as it may, Modi’s remark on the unwanted divisive discourse on the language issue should be the beginning and not the end on various issues that are creating an unwholesome environment in India. Congress leader Rashid Alvi reacted when he told Republic TV, “What PM Modi has said is correct. But the problem is that BJP leaders and PM Modi speak differently. If the PM really wants this, why doesn’t he take action against leaders who incite language debate? Currently, an attempt is being made to stoke the embers of communalism and religious divide further over the historic claims that masjids were allegedly built over destroyed mandirs. Hindutva brigade has an agenda to turn on other religious sites such as- Gyanvapi Mosque-Kashi Vishwanath temple in Varanasi and the Jama Masjid-Krishna Janmabhoomi in Mathura. The ground for their claim is the same as in Ayodhya: that these were constructed after demolishing Hindu temples and this “historic wrong” must be righted. Over the years, several BJP leaders have repeated and amplified unhistorical claims that the Taj is in fact a Hindu temple that was built much before the reign of Shah Jahan. However, historical accounts also narrate how Hindu kings destroyed mandirs and looted them from the territories of their Hindu enemies. These are contained in essays written by Richard H. David, professor of Religion and Asian Studies, Bard College. David also wrote that Swami Vivekananda, regarded as an icon of the Hindutva politics and resurgent Hindu India by RSS, and also the greatest narrator of ancient India’s past, unambiguously, declared that “Jagannath Temple was originally a Buddhist Temple.” Will all these mean that majids, mandirs, pagodas, churches etc should be destroyed because there is suspicion that these were built over religious places of other communities? When will this end, is a question that needs to be clarified by the government of the day and in this, perhaps Modi can enlighten the nation.
DailyDevotion Having God’s “Unreasonable” Faith
Seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you. —Matthew 6:33
When we look at these words of Jesus, we immediately find them to be the most revolutionary that human ears have ever heard. “…seek first the kingdom of God….” Even the most spiritually-minded of us argue the exact opposite, saying, “But I must live; I must make a certain amount of money; I must be clothed; I must be fed.” The great concern of our lives is not the kingdom of God but how we are going to take care of ourselves to live. Jesus reversed the order by telling us to get the right relationship with God first, maintaining it as the primary concern of our lives, and never to place our concern on taking care of the other things of life. “…do not worry about your life…” (Matthew 6:25). Our Lord pointed out that from His standpoint it is absolutely unreasonable for us to be anxious, worrying about how we will live. Jesus did not say that the person who takes no thought for anything in his life is blessed— no, that person is a fool. But Jesus did teach that His disciple must make his relationship with God the dominating focus of his life, and to be cautiously carefree about everything else in comparison to that. In essence, Jesus was saying, “Don’t make food and drink the controlling factor of your life, but be focused absolutely on God.” Some people are careless about what they eat and drink, and they suffer for it; they are careless about what they wear, having no business looking the way they do; they are careless with their earthly matters, and God holds them responsible. Jesus is saying that the greatest concern of life is to place our relationship with God first, and everything else second. It is one of the most difficult, yet critical, disciplines of the Christian life to allow the Holy Spirit to bring us into absolute harmony with the teaching of Jesus in these verses.

NAGALAND POST, DIMAPUR SUNDAY, MAY 22, 2022
Post-mortem
‘Be a true public servant rather than being a master’ T he use money power has prevented many Educated and bright young generation having political ambitions from playing better and bigger role. The rich old politicians continue to used money power demoralising many bright minds from contesting knowing money power vs individual dreams for bringing drastic change in the system has not match for those spending halt unable to proceed further. Now that being said I wished to jumped into another most misunderstood topic which we overlook and fails to educate on what the essentially the word “minister” means. Here I will give more attention to political aspect by se parating the church ministers .First it is pertinent to note that civil servants also called by the name public servant is not exclusively a tag for them alone. Cabinet ministers are public servants too and not a master. Some think by virtue of being an elected leaders they cannot be in the category
I
of public servants. This misconception of a public servants needs to be properly addressed. The court’s interpretation on February 20 ,1979, the supreme court in its judgement in M Karunanidhi versus union of India held that the post of chief minister was that of a “public servant”. Interpreting the term “public servant”, the apex court has taken recourse to section 21 (12) (a) of the Indian penal code (IPC)1860, which defines a public servant as “every person in the service of pay of the government or remunerated by fees or commission for the performance of any public duty by the government”. The prevention of the corruption act also defines a public servant in a manner similar to IPC. Now what am trying to highlight here is that many political leaders once elected and made ministers thinks they are outside the purview of public servants. This is a wrong assumption. They are elected to serve the people’s who sent them
as their representatives to the August house (NLA) .They are accountable and answerable to the A/C they represent. It Is important not to forget that even the chief minister is public servant as the court had interpreted. Am sure there are many minister who does not have an iota of knowledge that they are servants of the people and not the master or a king who does not requires the audience of those who push them up into a position where they can serve the people as is naturally and democratically their paramount duties being a public servant themselves. Finally, may I dwell on the importance and benefits of organising a common platform during election year, where in CSOs. Hohos or students’ union can invite all the intending candidates of their respective A/C to share the stage and debate. As many scholars strongly advocate such undertaking. Debate is the bedrock of the democracy in any culture or political system.
Through this debate comes voters’knowledge. Voters get the opportunity and awareness of specific candidates policies ,and general political knowledge .they get to know who is the right candidate to vote for, based on their planed visions envisaged if elected. Money power can be kept at distance if the candidate is well versed in general political knowledge and most impor tantly his agendas whether all the tall promises can be put into practical action too, will be scrutinized by the voters. It gives the voters an upper hand to choose the right candidate. This debate during their campaigns experiment was successfully done in Sierra Leone. Though USA model of government is different from that of India, such town hall debate is done among presidential hopeful. Yet, ours is a multiparliamentar y system where many candidates can contest. Such debates among the intending candidates improved the General perception of the candidates and sees
a glimpse of what type of leaders they can be if elected. A media house expert says such debate helps the voters make well informed choice and encouraged intending candidates to focus on policy issues, a conviction so widely held, that this candidate showdown has become mainstay of the electoral process in many places around the world. I would like to encourage the various CSOs and students’ bodies to organise such common platform and invite all the intending candidates to spell out their visions. Policies and see whether they have what it takes to be a leader to represent your constituencies. By electing the one who spent the biggest amount of money we may lose a promising l e a d e r w h o h a s va s t political knowledge and experience. Am not trying to say candidates spending huge amount of money are all dumb and incapable. But to bring to the attention that the menace of money power increasing is largely responsible for precious
little development here and there. Rich doesn’t guarantee a wise decision and abundance of individual talent or even innovative policies that will benefit his A/C. To sum up let’s stop the menace of money and muscles powers. For there will be less development. After all someone will be busy minting money for the next election to buy votes instead of developing your areas. Secondly, remember that starting from CM / Deputy CM / all the ministers and MLAs are public servants to serve us and not our m a s t e r s. Wi n d i n g u p here by encouraging you once again to think about the common platform to give opportunity to the intending candidates to prove themselves in front of the gatherings in thousands to hear what they have in their political vision in their mind. God bless my Nagaland. Vanthungo Odyuo President Nationalist Congress Party, Nagaland

research and innovating have been crushed by the passion for meeting new friends online, and most times busy discussing trivial issues. Now, they are so addicted to the online rave of the moment, and are so engrossed in social media that they are almost 24 hours online. Hence most students’ academic performance suffers a setback as a result of distraction from the social media. It is to be estimated that even those students who pass their HSLC or HSSLC or graduates, one out of three does not possess the knowledge and skills that would lead him or her to the next level. Though there have been many social, economic, and environmental factors that have added to the pressure of students in the past years, the dropout rate for students and unemployment is still a major concern. Considering all of the above pros and cons, this phenomenon is to be considered a source of worry if we believe in knowledge and skill acquisition. f u t u r e. T h e y s h o u l d consider it as necessary to develop certain regulations over the use of such social networking sites, especially for high school and college students. But still, students should get the choice to spend time socializing in an effective way. It should not hamper their school or college performance, and it should be kept in mind that social networking sites create virtual worlds that drastically differ from reality. Students needs to develop cognitive and intuitive ability to analyze how much time they want to spend on social media. It is left up to the students to decide what really matters in their life and how much of this virtual life translates to real life. Educational Institutions therefore, cannot remain as mere venues for the transmission of a prescribed set of information from teacher to students over a fixed period of time rather it must promote “Learning to Learn”- the acquisition of knowledge and skills that make continuous learning possible over the lifetime. “The illiterate of the 21st century will not be those who cannot read and write but those who cannot learn, unlearn and relear n”. Reader’s Post Drivers need proper seminar Sir,
As a Dimapur citizen,I have been noticing for many years that many of the Auto Drivers drives recklessly and doesn’t follow traffic rules, overtaking even if there is a traffic Jam which leads to huge traffic congestion. Many of the drivers also stop here and there without using indicator lights. Indicators Lights is used to show an intended change of direction. Indicator lights should use in good time, giving other road users plenty of time to react and adapt to your signal. It has also come to the limelight that many of the Autos indicator doesn’t work. Therefore it is my request to the concerned authority to keep an eye on it and check such vehicles. Many drivers need to be disciplined in many ways, so it is my appeal to the concerned authority to give proper seminar to Auto Drivers in Dimapur District. Together let’s all make Dimapur a better place. Concerned Citizen Kewepelo Mero Lower Naharbari newspaper nor that of the Editor in any manner.

state general secretary Kunal Ghosh said BJP should stop trying to take credit for cutting fuel prices. “The fuel prices were cur due to immense opposition and public pressure,” he asserted. The Centre on Saturday cut excise duty on petrol by a record Rs 8 per litre and that on diesel by Rs 6 per litre to give relief to consumers battered by high fuel prices which has pushed up inflation to a multi-year high. It also announced subsidy of Rs 200 per cylinder to Ujjwala Yojana beneficiaries for 12 cylinders in a year to help ease some of the burden arising from cooking gas rates rising to record levels. Ghosh said, “The BJP has been saying for a long time that it has no role to play in fuel price hike. If it can slash the prices today, it could have done it long back. But it didn’t. So it should stop trying to take the credit of it”.

During his interaction with the troops, Pande complimented them for their high morale and professional competence, it noted. On his arrival at Chinar Corps headquarters, Pande was briefed by Aujla on the overall security situation prevalent along the LoC and hinterland, it mentioned. “The Army chief highlighted that it was the dawn of a new era of development, peace and prosperity in Kashmir and applauded Chinar Corps for their high level of morale and contribution to peace building in Jammu and Kashmir,” it noted.
KO L K ATA , M AY 2 1 (PTI): TMC on Saturday said the Centre’s decision to slash fuel prices is an attempt to “fool the people” as it had increased the prices by leaps and bounds in the last few months and said West Bengal will follow suit once it lifts the “economic blockade” and releases the funds due to the state. TMC national spokesperson Sukhendu Sekhar Ray said the Centre has raised the prices of petrol and diesel at least 14 times in the past few months and by leaps and bounds in the past one year. “Now it is decreasing the prices by Rs 8 and Rs 6 per litre respectively. This is nothing but an attempt to fool the general people. This cut is not enough to bring down inflation”. To queries, he said West Bengal will slash fuel prices once the Centre cleared its dues amounting to Rs 97,000 crore. TMC

NEW DELHI, MAY 21 (PTI): The country’s foreign exchange reserves declined by $2.676 billion to stand at $593.279 billion in the week ended May 13, RBI data showed on Friday. In the previous week, the reserves had declined by $1.774 billion to $595.954 billion. According to an article ‘State of the Economy’, published in the RBI’s Bulletin for May, foreign exchange reserves at $596 billion as on May 6 were equivalent to about 10 months of imports projected for 2022-23. During the reporting week, the fall in the reserves was mainly on account of a drop in foreign currency assets (FCA), a major component of the overall reserves, and gold reserves, as per weekly data by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI). FCAs declined by USD 1.302 billion to USD 529.554 billion in the week. Expressed in dollar terms, the foreign currency assets include the effect of appreciation or depreciation of non-US units like the euro, pound and yen held in the foreign exchange reserves. G o l d r e s e r ve s d e creased by USD 1.169 billion to USD 40.57 billion.

CNG price hiked by Rs 2 per kg NEW DELHI, MAY 21 (PTI): The price of CNG in the national capital on Saturday was hiked by Rs 2 per kg, the 13th increase in rates in just over two months. CNG in the national capital territory of Delhi now costs Rs 75.61 per kg, up from Rs 73.61 per kg, according to the information posted on the website of Indraprastha Gas Ltd (IGL) -- the firm which retails CNG and piped cooking gas in the national capital and adjoining cities. This is the 13th increase in price since March 7. In all, the CNG price has risen by Rs 19.60 per kg during this period. In the last one year, prices have increased by Rs 32.21 per kg or 60 per cent, according to data compiled by PTI. However, the rates of gas piped to household kitchens, called piped natural gas (PNG), remain unchanged at Rs 45.86 per scm. City gas distributors have been periodically raising prices since October last year, when domestic as well as international gas prices started to climb as economies around the world
recovered from the pandemic-induced slowdown. IGL Managing Director Sanjay Kumar said the prices are likely to remain elevated in the near future due to high international prices of natural gas. CNG prices rose by Rs 8.74 per kg in the last three months of 2021, and from January there was a steady increase of about 50 paise a kg almost every week. The rates have gone up after the government more than doubled the price of natural gas produced locally to USD 6.1 per million British thermal unit from April 1. With domestically produced gas not sufficient to meet city gas demand, imported fuel (LNG) is being used. LNG in the spot or current market costs USD 18-20 per mmBtu. Natural gas when compressed becomes CNG for use as fuel in automobiles. The same gas is piped to household kitchens and industries for cooking and other purposes. Mahanagar Gas Limited (MGL) has priced Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) at Rs 76 per kg in Mumbai.

The state government also acquired 90 acres of land at Mon village, which was about 3 kms away from the existing District Hospital Mon. The soil survey, contour survey works, preliminary works at the site including construction of road etc. have been initiated and the bid documents and technical details for the remaining works have also been taken up, it said. As per the timeline finalised with the experts and the department, works were expected to start by the third quarter of this year, H&FW said.
(From p-1) While stating that the Court had been gracious towards repeated appeal made by the state government to file additional affidavit, CPO, however, alleged that the grace period given was surprisingly being misused by the state government to only defer final hearing indefinitely. “Indifference and irresponsibility cast upon the gravity and urgency of the pending case by the state government only invite more complicated situation than it can handle on its own, whether socially or monetarily,” CPO stated. It, therefore, appealed to the state government to file its self-appealed additional affidavit within the given opportune time. CPO warned that any further attempt to drag the matter on or defer final hearing indefinitely would also lead to further consequences and that the state government shall be held fully responsible.

It may be mentioned that to combat alleged illegal collection of money from the vehicles at check gates and at other locations across Nagaland, the state government on May 19 ordered closure of all police check gates, except the existing inter-state check gates. The order said the check gates set up by other departments including municipal and town councils shall be closed down, except the inter-state check gates, which was allowed to function till May 31 beyond which a specific approval had to be obtained from the home department.

highest in five years. Given that their capital adequacy remains sound and provision coverage has improved, the government has a greater scope to nudge them to cough up much higher dividend this fiscal. However, since the government may have to spend an estimated Rs 1.8 trillion over and above the FY23 Budget Estimate on fertiliser and food subsidies, this isn’t a good time for a revenue slippage on any account. Of course, as finance secretary TV Somanathan said, the additional outgo could be offset by a steep jump in net tax receipts and higher disinvestment revenues.

The drop in the RBI dividend comes at an inopportune time when the Ukraine conflict has raised the subsidy payout by the government and threatened its bid to contain fiscal deficit at the targeted level of 6.4% in FY23, against 6.9% in FY22. Of course, there are still some bright spots. State-run banks recorded a net profit of Rs 48,874 crore in the first three quarters of FY22, greater than that of Rs 31,820 crore in the entire FY21, which was the

Thanks to the Bimal Jalan committee, which reviewed the RBI’s economic capital framework (ECF), the central bank transferred an all-time high amount of Rs 1.76 trillion to the government in 2018-19 (July-June). The RBI typically pays the dividend from the surplus income it earns on investments and valuation changes on its dollar holdings, and the fees it gets from printing currency, among others. The rupee depreciation against the dollar in recent months may also have weighed on the surplus transfer. Madan Sabnavis, chief economist at Bank of Baroda, said the RBI would have incurred a decent cost due to heavy investment in reverse repo auctions in FY22.

Commenting on closing down of police check gates, Tetseo said if the citizens feel that check gates were “liability” then there was no reason for check gates to be set up. “We have to follow government order. It is the wisdom of the government. The decision was taken in the interest of the state,” said Tetseo. “Whether there is a check gate or no check gate, police function will continue so removal of check gates should not hamper the law and order and this should not be an advantage for extortionist or any criminal activities,” said Tetseo.

NEW DELHI, MAY 21 (AGENCIES): The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) on Friday decided to transfer its FY22 surplus of Rs 30,307 crore to the government, the lowest dividend in ten years, which will reflect in the Centre’s budgetary calculations in FY23. Its board decided to maintain the contingency risk buffer at 5.5%. The dividend is less than a third of the central bank’s generous transfer of Rs 99,122 crore for FY21, which was, in fact, based on the RBI’s surplus over a nine-month period through March 2021, as it had decided to align its fiscal year with that of the government. Low payout by the central bank, partly due to its heavy investments in reverse repo operations, will drag down the government’s budgeted receipts of Rs 73,948 crore on account of dividends from the RBI, state-run banks and other financial institutions in FY23, unless surplus transfers from other entities rise sharply. Russia claims total control of Mariupol

POKROVSK/HELSINKI, MAY 21 (AGENCIES): Russia claimed to have captured Mariupol on Friday in what would be its biggest victory yet in its war with Ukraine, after a nearly three-month siege that reduced much of the strategic port city to a smoking ruin, with over 20,000 civilians feared dead. Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu reported to President Vladimir Putin the “complete liberation” of the Azovstal steel plant in Mariupol — the last stronghold of Ukrainian resistance — and the city as a whole, spokesman Igor Konashenkov said. There was no immediate confirmation from Ukraine. Russia’s state news agency RIA Novosti quoted the ministry as saying a
total of 2,439 Ukrainian fighters who had been holed up at the steelworks had surrendered since Monday, including over 500 on Friday. As they surrendered, the troops were taken prisoner by the Russians, and at least some were taken to a former penal
colony. Others were said to be hospitalized. The defense of the steel mill had been led by Ukraine’s Azov Regiment, whose far-right origins have been seized on by the Kremlin as part of an effort to cast its invasion as a battle against Nazi influence in Ukraine. Russia said the Azov commander was taken away from the plant in an armored vehicle. Russian authorities h ave t h r e a t e n e d t o investigate some of the steel mill’s defenders for war crimes and put them on trial, branding them “Nazis” and criminals. That has stirred international fears about their fate. The steelworks, which sprawled across 11 square kilometers (4 square miles), had been the site of fierce fighting for weeks.
Russia cuts off gas exports to Finland Ru s s i a h a l t e d g a s exports to neighbouring Finland on Saturday, a highly symbolic move that came just days after the Nordic country announced it wanted to join NATO and marked a likely end to Finland’s nearly 50 years of importing natural gas from Russia. The measure taken by the Russian energy giant Gazprom was in line with an earlier announcement
following Helsinki’s refusal to pay for the gas in rubles as Russian President Vladimir Putin has demanded European countries do since Russia invaded Ukraine on February 24. The Finnish stateowned gas company Gasum said that “natural gas supplies to Finland under Gasum’s supply contract have been cut off ” by Russia on Saturday morning at 7 am local time (0400 GMT).

Aus PM concedes poll defeat
Scott Morrison
CANBERRA/SYDNEY, MAY 21 (AGENCIES): Australia’s prime minister has conceded defeat after an election that could deliver a minority government. Prime Minister Scott Morrison acted quickly after Saturday’s election despite millions of votes yet to be counted because an Australian prime minister
must attend a Tokyo summit on Tuesday with U.S., Japanese and Indian leaders. “I believe it’s ver y important that this country has certainty. I think it’s very important this country can move forward,” Morrison said. “And particularly over the course of this week with the important meetings that are being held, I think it’s vitally important there’s a very clear understanding about the government of this country,” he added. Opposition leader Anthony Albanese will be sworn in as prime minister after his Labor party clenched its first electoral win since 2007.
Incoming PM Anthony Albanese says he wants to unite country Labor Party leader Anthony Albanese said he wanted to bring Australians together as he made his first comments after leading his party to an election victory on Saturday after nine years in opposition. “I want to unite the country,” Albanese told reporters as he left his home late on Saturday night to attend a Labor Party celebration in Sydney. “I think people want to come together, look for our common interest, look towards that sense of common purpose. I think people have had enough of division, what they want is to come together as a nation and I intend to lead that.”

The first polling stations closed on the country’s east coast at 6 pm (0800 GMT). The west coast is two hours behind. Due to the pandemic, around half of Australia’s 17 million electors have voted early or applied for postal votes, which will likely slow the count.
Monkeypox confirmed in 12 countries L O N D O N, M AY 2 1 (IANS): More than 80 cases of monkeypox have been confirmed in at least 12 countries, the World Health Organization (WHO) announced. The WHO said another 50 suspected cases are being investigated, without naming any countries, and warned that more cases are likely to be reported. Infections have been confirmed in nine European countries, as well as the US, Canada and Australia, the BBC reported citing the global health body as saying. Monkeypox is most common in remote parts of Central and West Africa. It is a rare viral infection which is usually mild and from which most people recover in a few weeks, according to the UK’s National Health Service. The virus does not spread easily between people and the risk to the wider public is said to be very low. There is no specific vaccine for monkeypox, but a smallpox jab offers 85 per cent protection since the two viruses are quite similar, BBC reported. So far, public health agencies in Europe have confirmed cases in the UK, Spain, Portugal, Germany, B e l g i u m , Fr a n c e, t h e Netherlands, Italy and Sweden. The WHO said on Friday that the recent outbreaks “are atypical, as they are occurring in non-

US, South Korea open to expanded military drills to deter North Korea SEOUL, MAY 21 (AP): US President Joe Biden and South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol said after meeting Saturday that they will consider expanded joint military exercises to deter the nuclear threat from North Korea at a time when there’s little hope of real diplomacy on the matter. The announcement reflects a shift in direction by both leaders from their predecessors: Former US President Donald Trump had considered scrapping the exercises and expressed affection for North Korean leader Kim Jong Un. And the last South Korean
president, Moon Jae-in, remained committed to dialogue with Kim to the end of his term despite being repeatedly rebuffed by the North. Biden said cooperation between the US and South Korea shows “our readiness to take on all threats together.” North Korea, which has defended its nuclear weapons and missile development as a necessary deterrence against what it describes as US threats, could well respond angrily to Saturday’s announcement. It has long described joint military exercises as
Crisis-hit Sri Lanka lifts state of emergency COLOMBO, MAY 21 (PTI): The Sri Lankan g ove r n m e n t l i f t e d t h e state of emergency from Saturday, nearly two weeks after it was imposed across the island nation as it faced unprecedented economic and anti-gover nment protests. Embattled Sri Lankan President Gotabaya Rajapaksa had declared a s t a t e o f e m e r ge n c y with effect from May 6 midnight, the second time in just over a month amidst growing countrywide antigovernment protests over the economic crisis. The Presidential Secretariat stated that the state of emergency has been lifted with effect from Friday midnight, Hiru News reported. The move was taken with the improvement of the law and order situation in the island nation. The state of emergency gave the police and the security forces sweeping power to arbitrarily arrest and detain people. The president’s decision to declare the emergency had come amidst weeks of protests demanding his resignation and the government, blaming the powerful Rajapaksa clan for mishandling the island nation’s economy, already hit by the pandemic. Blood sugar, BP out of control? Solo art exhibition underway in Dimapur You may be missing this key mineral
N
ot to worry you, but you could be low in a mineral that you rarely think about. It isn’t calcium, iron or zinc. Today’s topic is magnesium, the fourth most abundant mineral in the body. Magnesium is involved in 700-800 metabolic processes. It is vital for protein synthesis, nerve and muscle function, blood sugar control, inflammation, stress reduction, sleep and blood pressure regulation. A 2020 article from the journal Heliyon states that magnesium content in fruit and vegetables has dropped in the last 50 years and about 80% is lost during food processing. But that’s not all. Conditions like celiac disease, irritable bowl syndrome and inflammatory bowel disease impair absorption. And medications such as proton pump inhibitors used for reflux, diuretics, statins, insulin and corti-
costeroids impair absorption. And in case I missed anyone, being stressed can deplete magnesium by activating the sympathetic nervous system. Taking large doses of vitamin D can also intensify magnesium deficiency. Data from the 2016 NHANES survey found that 48% of Americans consumed less than the recommended amount of
in bone. One could have symptoms of low magnesium and test normal. The form of magnesium taken as a supplement is very important. Take the wrong type, think Milk of Magnesia, and diarrhea will follow. Magnesium glycinate and magnesium malate are well absorbed with minimal GI distress. People find soaking in Epsom salts relaxing. Probably because Epsom salt is magnesium sulfate and helps with muscle and joint pain. A 2018 study in the journal Nutrients found that magnesium supplementation reduced insulin resistance and improved glycemic control in patients with type 2 diabetes. The best food sources for magnesium are seeds like chia and pumpkin, legumes like soy, whole grains including brown rice, fatty fish, dark leafy greens and dark chocolate (at least 70% cocoa).
magnesium. Symptoms of low magnesium levels are muscle spasms and tightness, tremors, constipation, sleep issues, insulin resistance, low vitamin D levels, headaches and fatigue. If you suffer from any of these symptoms long term, talk to your doctor. It is difficult to accurately measure magnesium levels since half of it is stored (Sheah Rarback, Miami Herald)

Prime Minister Narendra Modi during an interaction with athletes who took part in the Deaflympics. (PTI )
NEW DELHI, MAY 21 (IANS): Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday interacted with the Indian contingent for the recently held Deaflympics as he hosted them at his residence here. In the best-ever performance, the Indian team won 16 medals including 8 Gold medals in the Deaflympics, held in Brazil. Sports minister Anurag Singh Thakur and Nisith Pramanik (MoS sports) were also present on the occasion. Interacting with Rohit Bhaker, a senior member of the contingent, the Prime Minister discussed his way of dealing with the challenges and his way of assessing his opponents. Rohit also told Prime Minister Modi about his background and
inspiration for getting into sports and staying for so long at the highest level. The PM told the ace badminton player that his life as an individual and sportsperson is an inspiration. He also complimented him for his perseverance and not yielding to the obstacles of life. PM Modi noted the continued zeal in the player and his rising performance with advancing age. “Not resting on laurels and not feeling satisfied is one of the key qualities of a player. A player sets ever-higher goals and strives to attain them,” the Prime Minister said. Wr e s t l e r Vi r e n d e r Singh told about the legacy of his family in wrestling. He also narrated his satisfac-
tion in finding opportunities and competition in the deaf community. The Prime Minister noted his medal-winning consistent performance in Deaflympics since 2005 and complimented him for his desire to excel. PM Modi appreciated his position as a veteran and also as a keen learner of the sport. “Your willpower inspires everyone. Country’s youth and sportspersons both can learn from your quality of consistency. Mbappé signs new PSG India names team for FIH Women’s deal after rejecting Madrid Pro League, Savita remains captain
PARIS, MAY 21 (AGENCIES): Kylian Mbappé signed a new three-year contract to stay at Paris Saint-Germain after one of soccer’s most-coveted players turned down the chance again to join Real Madrid, a person with knowledge of the deal told The Associated Press on Saturday. They spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the contract talks publicly. The World Cup-winning forward’s contract was expiring in June and he would have been available on a free transfer. Instead of joining 13-time European champion Madrid, which has chased him for so long, the 23-year-old Mbappé is staying to try to deliver PSG its first Champions League title. Madrid managed to beat PSG in the Champions League this season but not in the transfer market once again. The Spanish giant’s failure to sign Mbappé is a significant blow for its president, Florentino Pérez, who has been trying to get the transfer over the line for a year. PSG tur ned down Madrid’s official bid of 180 million euros ($190 mil-

lion) — the same amount it signed Mbappé for from Monaco in 2017 — and even another reported amount of 200 million euros ($211 million) was not enough to sell its star despite him having only a year remaining on his contract. Mbappé said he wanted to leave at the end of last season but only on the right terms for PSG. The wealth of the club’s Qatar sovereign wealth fund ownership linked to the emir allows PSG to resist bids that could prove irresistible to other clubs without state funding. The non-transfer reflects the shifting power dynamics in European football. Pérez was one of the architects of the European Super League breakaway from the UEFA Champions League that imploded within 48 hours in April 2021.
NEW DELHI, MAY 21 (PTI): India on Saturday named a 24-member women’s hockey team, to be led by Savita Punia, for the European leg of the FIH Pro League matches in Belgium and Netherlands in June. The team will play six matches from June 11 to 22 ahead of the FIH Hockey Women’s World Cup to be held in Spain and the Netherlands from July 1-17. India play hosts Belgium on June 11 and 12 in Antwerp before shifting base to Rotterdam, the Netherlands, to face Argentina (June 18 and 19) and USA (June 21 and 22). Savita will continue to lead the team though star striker Rani Rampal is likely to return to action after she made her last appearance at last year’s Tokyo Olympics. Rani was under rehabilitation after recovering from a prolonged hamstring injury. She was named in the Indian squad for the last two matches of the FIH Pro League in Bhubaneswar against the Netherlands last month but did not play. Talking about the team, chief coach Janneke Schopman said, “This is going to be a very important leg of Pro League matches in Europe as it will give us insights into our progress ahead of the World Cup in July. “These matches are going to be critical in also finalizing our team for the World Cup,” Schopman
said.
The Indian team is currently placed second in the standings after Argentina with 22 points from eight matches with four wins, three draws and one loss. fine catch to get rid of the former. Brevis took on the attack to the opposition and smashed two sixes and a four off Kuldeep, who could have had him but skipper Pant dropped a sitter in the 12th over to add to the agony of the bowler. H o w e v e r, B r e v i s dragged one on to his stumps as MI slipped to 95 for 3 in the 15th over. After that it was a David show as hit a six over deep mid-wicket off Shardul Thakur. David and Varma hit a four a six to accumulate 13 runs off the 16th over. Khaleel then conceded 17
with David smashing a four and a six. Needing 29 from 18 balls, David clobbered Shardul for two maximums and also completed the fifty run stand to reduce the equation to 15 off 13 balls. Thakur finally removed David, who hit a full toss to Prithvi Shaw at extra cover but by then it was too late. Earlier, opting to field, MI bowlers, led by Bumrah (3/25) left DC tottering at 50 for 4 in 8.4 overs but Rovman Powell and skipper Pant (39 off 33 balls) shared 75 off 44 balls to ressurect the innings and take them to a decent total. Daniel Sams (1/30) and Riley Mereditch (0/9 in 2 overs) bowled well as did the spin duo of Mayank Markande (1/26) and Hrithik Shooken (0/34). Ramandeep Singh (2/29 in 2 overs) also managed to scalp two wickets. Back after recovering from a bout of typhoid, Shaw (24) looked in good touch but Sams produced the first breakthrough when he had Warner caught by Bumrah at short third man. Bumrah then turned the heat as he first found the outside edge of Mitchell Marsh with Rohit taking a low catch and then returned to sent back Shaw with an unplayable bouncer.
It was time for Markande to shine next as Sarfaraz Khan nicked one outside the off-stump to see DC slump to 50 for four in ninth over. With Shokeen and Markande bowling in tandum, DC scored their lowest total at the halfway mark this season -- 55 for four. While Pant dropped anchor, Powell exploded in the 12th over, smashing Shokeen for two maximums and a four to pick up 20 runs. Markande was next in line as Powell deposited him over long-off, before MI conceded a bye four. Meredith bowled a tight over, conceding just two. Ramandeep then bowled three wides and conceded a six and a four before taking Pant’s wicket in his final ball. Powell then pulled Bumrah over deep square leg, while Axar Patel (19 not out) produced a timely six off Sams. However, Bumrah produced his trademark toe-crushing yorker to disturb the timbers of Powell and nearly had another wicket, only if Brevis could have held on to a onehanded catch. Ramandeep took a wicket in the final over which yielded 11 runs.

M U M B A I , M AY 2 1 (PTI): Royal Challengers Bangalore sneeked into the play-offs after Mumbai Indians broke Delhi Capitals’ heart with a five-wicket win in their last IPL match here on Saturday. Already out of contention, MI played partypoopers as they first restricted DC to 159 for 7 with Jasprit Bumrah snapping three wickets and then returned to overhaul the target in 19.1 overs to knock the 2020 finalists out of the tournament. While Ishan Kishan (48) and Dewald Brevis (37) kept MI in the hunt, it was Tim David’s 11-ball 34-run cameo that brought the five-time champions back into the chase. T i l a k Va r m a a l s o chipped in with a crucial 17-ball 21. With MI at 95 for 3 in 14.3 overs, DC skipper Rishabh Pant made a strategic blunder as he refused to go for DRS after David nicked the first ball of his innings but the onfield umpire didn’t give him out. It came back to haunt DC as David slammed fours and sixes at will to bring down the equation to 15 off 14 balls. Ramandeep then provided the finishing touch with a six-ball 13. DC finished with 14 points to remain in the fifth spot, while RCB joined

Gujarat Titans, Rajasthan Royals and Lucknow Super Giants into the playoffs with 16 points. Defending the total, left-arm seamer Khaleel Ahmed looked in good rhythm as he bowled a sensational first two overs, conceding just 2. He bowled full outside off-stump to trouble the openers, mainly Rohit Sharma (2). Anrich Nortje finally put an end to Rohit’s struggle with the MI skipper chipping one to mid-on. Ishan and Brevis then added 51 runs off 37 balls but Kuldeep Yadav (1/33) broke the partnership with David Warner taking a

Sindhu, seeded sixth, enjoyed a 6-4 head-tohead count coming into the match but she was not her usual best and committed too many unforced errors against the Chinese, who played aggressive badminton to come up trumps against the Indian. She had also lost to Chen the last time the two faced off at the 2019 BWF World Tour Finals. L O N D O N, M AY 2 1 (AGENCIES): Wimbledon, widely regarded as the world’s most prestigious tennis tournament, was stripped of ranking points on Friday by the sport’s main tours in a move which threatens to reduce the Grand Slam to the status of a high-profile exhibition event. The decision by the ATP and WTA was in response to Wimbledon banning Russian and Belarusian players following the invasion of Ukraine. “It is with great regret and reluctance that we see no option but to remove ATP Ranking points from Wimbledon for 2022,” said an ATP statement. “Our rules and agreements exist in order to protect the rights of players as a whole. GWANGJU (SOUTH KOREA), MAY 21 (PTI): The Indian men’s compound archery team on Saturday came from behind to prevail over France by two points in an intense finish to win the gold medal in successive World Cup stages. Unheralded Mohan Bhardwaj also shared the limelight as he stunned reigning world champion Nico Wiener en route to winning a dream World Cup individual silver medal as Indian compound archers outshone their muchfancied recurve teammates. A day after the Olympic discipline recurve archers ended their campaign with a solitary bronze (in women’s team event), India bagged one gold, one silver and one bronze in the compound section on Saturday to end their World Cup Stage 2 campaign with five medals. That the compound archers bagged one gold, one silver and two bronze from India’s total medal count of five summed up their dominance compared to the TOPS-supported Olympic discipline recurve archers. India began the day with the men’s compound team dishing out a superb fightback to prevail over

France 232-230 to win the gold medal. In a repeat of the Stage 1 final, the fourth-seeded men’s team, comprising Abhishek Verma, Aman Saini and Rajat Chauhan, found itself trailing against its sixth-seed rivals in the first two ends. But riding on an immaculate finish in the third end the trio sealed a 232230 win over its French counterparts Adrien Gontier, Jean Philippe Boulch and Qentin Baraer to win the World Cup Stage 2 gold. In the last World Cup final at Antalya in April, the same Indian trio had defeated France by onepoint. “It’s our second consecutive win (this season). We were the best in Turkey and we proved it again. We
are very happy about that,” Verma said. “We know the strategy of France and we know their potential. We changed our strategy after the third round and it helped up,” Chauhan pointed out. Verma went on to win a second medal when he along with Avneet Kaur pipped higher-seeded Turkey’s Amircan Haney and Ayse Bera Suzer 156-155 to win the bronze in the mixed team event. For Kaur, this was her second bronze having won a team bronze in the women’s event earlier. Starting off with 39all, the sixth-seeded Indian duo trailed by two points in the second end (77-79) with its fourth-seeded rivals shooting four 10s including three Xs (closer to the centre).

Novak Djokovic celebrates winning Wimbledon in 2021.
Wimbledon in 2021, he earned 2,000 points. Wimbledon chiefs at the All England Club branded the move by the ATP and WTA as “disproportionate”. WTA, which operates the women’s tour, joined their male colleagues in withholding points for the tournament which starts on June 27. Wimbledon’s ban has ruled out a swathe of top players, including men’s world number two Daniil Medvedev and last year’s women’s semi-finalist Aryna Sabalenka of Belarus
as well as two-time major winner Victoria Azarenka. The ATP, however, hinted at a resolution to the impasse. “We remain hopeful of further discussions with Wimbledon leading to an acceptable outcome for all concerned.” WTA chief executive Steve Simon said that his organisation believed “that individual athletes participating in an individual sport should not be penalised solely because of their nationalities or the decisions made by the governments of their countries.”
NEW DELHI, MAY 21 (IANS): Tokyo Olympic gold medalist Neeraj Chopra on Saturday said that he is not worried about the big performances of their rivals at the beginning of the season but he aims to hit the 90-metre mark this season. Neeraj is currently working hard on his body, strength as well honing his skills with his coach Klaus Bartonietz at the training base in Turkey. On the other hand, his rivals -- world champion Anderson Peters of Grenada and Tokyo Olympics silver winner Jakub Vadlejch of Czech Republic -- had come up with 93.07m and 90.88m throws respectively in the Doha Diamond League on May 13. However, the star Indian athlete, who has a personal best of 88.07m and won gold in Tokyo Olympics with a throw of 87.58m, doesn’t want to take pressure and instead wishes to give his best.

KOLKATA, MAY 21 (PTI): Young India forward Liston Colaco scored a stunning hat-trick to help ATK Mohun Bagan rout Bashundhara Kings of Bangladesh 4-0 and keep their inter-zone semifinal hopes alive in the AFC Cup here on Saturday. In a must-win game after their defeat to Gokulam Kerala in the Group D opener on Wednesday, AT K M o h u n B a g a n’s strong start was halted by strong winds and thunder showers that also damaged some parts of the Salt Lake Stadium. The match was held up for close to one hour after 11 minutes into the first-half and the Mariners returned to blow away the Bangladeshi Premier League champions with Colaco’s double strike in the space of nine minutes (25th and 34th). Colaco completed his hat-trick in the 53rd minute with a brilliant left-footed first touch, while David Williams came off the bench to seal a thumping

win with his 77th minute strike. ATK Mohun Bagan now have three points from two matches and face Maziya Sports and Recreation Club on May 24, hoping that other results go their way to grab the solitary berth available from group D for the AFC Cup Inter-Zone semi-finals. A fit-again India cen-
tral defender Sandesh Jhingan was back in action after a long injury layoff as the Juan Ferrando-coached side started off with a much positive intent after their opening round reversal. In the absence of Tiri who has been ruled out for seven months because of an ACL tear, Jhingan helmed ATKMB defence
with Subhasish Bose and Pritam Kotal, even as there was little challenge from their opponents. Jhingan did not have a perfect outing and almost let in a goal in the 83rd minute with a missed clearance but Bashundhara failed to grab the opportunity. The Bangladeshi Premier League champions were also unlucky not to have scored in the 19th minute when their captain Robson’s strike came off the post from a free-kick. A defensive lapse from Bashundhara gave ATK Mohun Bagan the opening goal and the 23-year-old Colaco scored from a Carl McHugh’s assist to open his account. There was no looking back from there on and Colaco fired in his second goal, this time from Joni Kauko’s clinical pass and the Goan forward just needed just a tap-in to double the lead. Colaco completed his hat-trick with Khaled Shafiei failing to clear an easy ball and Manvir Singh set it up from the right.
