accuses state govt of diverting Murmu becomes India’s first tribal President Therie VDB, MGNREGA fund for election
NEW DELHI, JUL 21 (PTI): Droupadi Murmu scripted history on Thursday by becoming India’s first tribal President in the one-sided contest, defeating Opposition candidate Yashwant Sinha. Murmu, 64, won by an overwhelming margin against Sinha after receiving over 64 per cent valid votes in a day-long counting of ballots of MPs and MLAs, comprising the electoral college, to succeed Ram Nath Kovid to become the country’s 15th president. After the end of the counting process that continued for more than 10 hours, returning officer P C Mody declared Murmu as the winner and said that she got 6,76,803 votes against Sinha’s 3,80,177 votes. The counting of votes also suggests that Murmu was the beneficiary of crossvoting from 17 MPs. Assam, Jharkhand and Madhya Pradesh assemblies wit-

nessed a significant number of Opposition MLAs voting for the BJP-led NDA’s candidate. She will be the first President to be born after independence and is the youngest to occupy the top post. She is also the second woman to become the President. She will be sworn in on July 25. Her victory was sealed after the third round itself when the returning officer announced that Murmu had already received over 53 per cent of the total valid
votes even as ballots from 10 states and Union territories are still being counted. Conceding defeat after the third round of counting, Sinha congratulated Murmu and said every Indian hope that as the 15th President she functions as the “custodian of the Constitution” without fear or favour. In a statement, Sinha thanked the leaders of the Opposition parties for choosing him as their consensus candidate in this election and all members of the Electoral
College who voted for him. Immediately after the announcement of the NDA presidential nominee crossing the halfway mark, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and BJP president J P Nadda visited Murmu at her residence here to congratulate her. “India scripts history. At a time when 1.3 billion Indians are marking Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav, a daughter of India hailing from a tribal community born in a remote part of eastern India has been elected our President!,” Modi tweeted “Droupadi Murmu Ji’s life, her early struggles, her rich service and her exemplary success motivates each and every Indian. She has emerged as a ray of hope for our citizens, especially the poor, marginalised and the downtrodden,” he said in a series of tweets. Modi also thanked all MPs and MLAs across party lines who supported her
candidature and said her “record victory” augurs well for our democracy. “Droupadi Murmu Ji has been an outstanding MLA and Minister. She had an excellent tenure as Jharkhand governor. I am certain she will be an outstanding President who will lead from the front and strengthen India’s development journey,” he said. Born on June 20, 1958, in Odisha’s Mayurbhanj district, she catapulted into the national spotlight after being picked as the ruling NDA’s presidential nominee in the July 18 polls. It is from Rairangpur that she took her first step up the BJP ladder. She was a councillor in the local Notified Area Council in 1997 and rose to be a minister in Odisha’s BJDBJP coalition government from 2000-04. In 2015, she was appointed governor of Jharkhand and stayed in the post till 2021.

DIMAPUR, JUL 21 (NPN): Making a startling allegation, Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee (NPCC) president, K. Therie, on Thursday, said the state government was diverting VDB, MGNREGA fund for the election as there were no other sources. Therie said this while speaking at the protest rally organized by the party at Congress Bhavan, here against Enforcement Directorate (ED) summoning All India Congress Committee (AICC) president, Sonia Gandhi in Delhi Thursday. Therie alleged that the state government has deducted 70% from MGNREGA fund and given to the 19 NPF MLAs, who had recently defected to NDPP. He also said each of the 19 MLAs were given Rs.2.50 crore as election fund. He further

claimed that some of the 19 MLAs were paid and some yet to receive their share. Therie also claimed that state gover nment does not have any welfare schemes and whatever was received from the Centre were being siphoned off for political gains. He said though there were only 12 BJP MLAs in the state, the UDA MLAs feared the BJP legislators because Rio’s neck was tied to the big ‘dog collar’ of five Enforcement Directorate (ED) cases. “Anytime they (BJP) can pull the string
and put him in the cage, and because of his criminal activities and corruption, he wants protection from BJP. He does not want protection from 48 MLAs”. Therie said Rio does not worry about the 48 UDA MLAs supporting him because BJP government at the centre can pull the string anytime. He also said even those NPF MLAs who joined NDPP through defection to form the oppositionless government, were also afraid that BJP will send NIA, CBI or ED to inspect (Cont’d on p-8) their
TMC drops bombshell; to abstain from VP polls CCoNPI has become irrelevant: State JD (U) KO L K AT A , J U L 2 1 (AGENCIES): In a major blow to the opposition, the Trinamool Congress announced Thursday that it will abstain from voting for the vice-presidential election. The party also said it could not go with the NDA’s Jagdeep Dhankhar but could not support the Opposition’s Margaret Alva either, as it had “not been consulted” on her candidature. TMC general secretary Abhishek Banerjee also argued that larger Opposition unity required getting together on larger issues. “We cannot support Jagdeep Dhankhar who, during his tenure as Gov-
ernor here, undermined Bengal. You have all seen his mentality and his perspective on the state. Ideologically, we cannot vote in favour of him. On the other hand, Opposition parties chose Margaret Alva as the candidate, but the process of choosing her was not right. They decided on her candidature without proper consultation,” Abhishek said. Referring to the claim by “a senior Opposition leader” that he tried to reach out to Mamata Banerjee, Abhishek said: “But that was after the decision on the candidate was taken. The way the Opposition candidate was decided without
consulting a party which has 35 MPs, we have decided to abstain.” According to him, the TMC had proposed a few names and consultation was on. “But they (the other parties) suddenly called a meeting and the venue was also changed to Sharad Pawar’s residence. He also stated that the TMC is open to discussion on any issue with any Opposition party. “We have been taking the BJP head-on. We have been able to thwart the BJP. If any Opposition party, be it the Congress, AAP, DMK wants to have discussions with us, we are open for it,” added Banerjee.

DIMAPUR, JUL 21 (NPN): Janata Dal (United) Nagaland unit has accused the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) government of being toothless, unable to muster courage to represent voice of the people of the State who were longing for peace. Addressing a press conference here on Thursday, JDU State general secretary Kitoho S Rotokha said the ruling coalition must honestly admit that its mission had become futile and morally accept its failure and pull out of the mission. He also demanded that the “UDA government must be (Cont’d on p-8) dissolved and be back to the
JD (U) functionaires during the press conference. (NP)
People’s Democratic Alliance (PDA) in honest admittance of its irrelevance.” Rotokha further alleged that Core Committee on Naga Political Issue (CCoNPI) had become irrelevant as had been already pointed out by various leaders of UDA themselves. While appreciating the mission of CCoNPI, he asserted that it was bound to fail as its
objective was vague, adding that its job was reduced to that of “mere messenger” with no principled stand. “An elected government must have the authority to decide what is honourable for citizens and, irrespective of whether the negotiating groups accept it or not, it could have come out with what is best for the people,” he stated categori-
cally, adding that the committee could have asserted its authority on negotiating parties on behalf of the people whom it represented. He remarked that CCoNPI was supposed to be the highest political body of overground Nagas and was expected to perform better than just being a “dak runner”. Rotokha further commented that CCoNPI should have taken a strong stand and endeavoured to thrash out differences between Naga negotiating groups. He however lamented that the committee had been just a mute listener to lectures of both Government of India and various Naga political (Cont’d on p-8) groups.

DIMAPUR, JUL 21 (NPN): Naga Mothers’ Association (NMA) has expressed concern on the unresolved demand of NIDA over superannuation and has sought the attention of governor Prof Jagdish Mukhi for immediate intervention on the matter. In a memorandum NMA through its president Abei-Ü Meru and joint secretary Malsawmthangi Leyri, pointed out that increasing the retirement age of doctors in the country to 65 years, as announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in May 2016, was done due to acute shortage of doctors in the country. It said, almost all States, including the neigh-
bouring Northeastern States, had increased the retirement age of doctors. The NMA memorandum expressed shock that the State government continue to put the lives of citizens at risk by refusing to retain the services of experienced doctors as per the Prime Minister’s directive and instead decided on re-employment, which is a denial of the rights of medical profession. NMA said creation of five new districts in the State and setting up two medical colleges in Kohima and Mon will require more doctors. In lieu of this, NMA said the state government was expected to create more posts of doc-
tors and also retain services of the experienced medical officers by increasing the superannuation age to help the State meet the shortage of medical practitioners. According to NMA the NIDA had only asked for enhancement of superannuation age to 62 years and hence the government’s decision for “re-employment” was not tenable and was in serious violation of the directive of Prime Minister. NMA also pointed out that as mothers, they have been active participants in ensuring better health services and proper implementation of schemes for women through NRHM like JSY and JSSK. blocks, which would cater to the soil testing needs in remote areas. According to the minister, the state now has two bio fertilizer production units at Rotimi village under Zunheboto district and Seyochung town under Kiphire district. He said that the units would be functional in a few months. Kashiho said that a proposal for another ten units was with the Ministry of Finance for consideration. Gracy stated that such programmes were conducted across the state, while adding that tEA started providing loans to women street vendors with zero interest during the pandemic to assist them. “tEA is now supporting over 5200 women street vendors across the state”, she said. As per survey conducted by tEA in Dimapur, Gracy informed that 50% of street vendors were sell-

ing their products without shelter, 20 % with temporary or minimal shelter, while only 30% with proper shelter. In this regard, she noted that proper shelter for all street vendors in Dimapur was a requirement to beat the scorching heat. She also mentioned that 51% of the families of street vendors were dependent on them for additional income. She emphasised on importance of savings and encouraged to continue doing business, and to do away with laid back attitude. Later, she urged all gathered to contact the office for financial assistance. Meanwhile, giving a motivational talk, dealer principal of Floyd Hyundai, Er. Shikato Jakhalu stressed that there was
no work smaller or bigger than others, citing the example that even the Prime Minister once sold tea on the streets. He also cited the example of the womenfolk of Bangladesh and how they have been pivotal in transforming the economy of Bangladesh through micro-financing and maintaining success rate of more than 90%. Delivering a brief overview of his entrepreneurial journey, Jakhalu stated that he gained inspiration in entrepreneurship when he observed his teachers involving in entrepreneurships besides their profession as teachers. He said that he opened a cyber café in Dimapur in 1999, and later took a loan and utilised it carefully to establish Floyd Hyundai.
“My journey was never easy and I had to suffer losses for a while” he said. Later, he encouraged the vendors to gain trust of their customers instead of focusing much on profit, citing that trust would give them better return in the long run. During the programme, short message on basic hygiene was delivered by tutor, Government Nursing School, Dimapur, Vive S. Chishi while five vendors were also extended interest-free loans. Earlier, programme was chaired by Anne Chopan, invocation by women leader, Konyak Baptist Church, Dimapur, Nyoimei Konyak, and vote of thanks was pronounced by administrative assistant, tEA, Imtisenla Longkumer.

Sonia Gandhi’s ED questioning: Congress units in NE stage protest
NORTHEAST, JUL 21 (PTI): Along with several other states in the country, the Congress units in Northeast also protested against the 3 hours interrogation of Sonia in the National Herald money laundering case.
Police detain leaders and workers in Assam
Assam Congress president Bhupen Kumar Borah, a host of party MLAs, and several party leaders were detained by police on Thursday when they staged a protest against the questioning of Sonia Gandhi by the Enforcement Directorate in a money laundering case. Raising slogans and slamming the BJP-led government, the Congress leaders and scores of workers tried to march along the arterial Guwahati-Shillong Road from the state party headquarters Rajiv Bhawan near Bhangagarh area. Anticipating such a move by the opposition party, the Guwahati Police had already put up a strong contingent of personnel and erected barricades just outside the Rajiv Bhawan to prevent them from proceeding to the local ED office in Rajgarh area. Borah and others were seen climbing the barricade to cross over to the other side. The police then dragged him and pushed him inside a bus.
When other Congress leaders also tried to break the barricade and move ahead, police detained dozens of leaders and workers, but later released them, a senior official said. Along with Borah, MLAs Jakir Hussain Sikdar, Nandita Das, Digant Barman, and Rekibuddin Ahmed, state functionaries, office bearers of sister organisations, and scores of general workers were bundled in several buses and detained for a few hours. “We are not going to bow down to such pressure tactics. This vindictive attitude of the BJP government is not acceptable. Our protest will be intensified if such repressive measures are not stopped,” Borah told reporters here. He accused Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma of using the police force to protect the interests of the ruling party and suppressing peaceful democratic protests. The ED on Thursday recorded the statement of Congress president Sonia Gandhi for two hours in the National Herald money laundering case and ended the session for the day on her request as she is recovering from Covid. The probe relates to alleged financial irregularities in the Congress-promoted Young Indian Private Limited, which owns the National Herald newspaper.

Tripura Cong protests outside ED office
The Congress protested outside the Enforcement Directorate (ED) office near Barjala in West Tripura district on Thursday over the questioning of party president Sonia Gandhi by the agency in New Delhi. Alleging “vendetta politics” of the BJP-led government at the Centre, hundreds of Congress workers raised slogans and burnt effigies of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah. Gandhi was interrogated by the ED in connection with her alleged involvement in the National Herald case. To protest the move, the AICC had asked all its
state units to stage demonstrations in front of ED offices to garner people’s support. “The ED summoned Sonia Gandhi in a false case as part of BJP’s dirty politics. This is a ploy to divert the people’s attention from the problems of price rise, GST, crisis in the farming sector, joblessness and steep fall in the value of rupee,” MLA Sudip Roy Barman told reporters. State Congress president Birajit Sinha said Indira Gandhi was arrested in 1977, but she became the prime minister 27 months after her arrest. “This time too the people will defeat BJP’s illdesign in the days to come,” he added.
Cong workers confront police in Manipur
A large crowd of Congress workers led by MPCC president K Meghachandra faced off with police in Imphal on Thursday in which some Congress workers were roughly-handled. The Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) staged a protest rally starting from Imphal Congress Bhavan to protests against the Enforcement Directorate’s (ED) harassment of AICC leaders by repeatedly summoning them. On Thursday, Congress leader Sonia Gandhi, who appeared before the ED in connection with an alleged money laundering case linked to the National
Herald paper, left the agency’s office after three hours of questioning. Earlier, the ED had summoned Rahul Gandhi repeatedly and questioned him for several hours in connection with the same case. A large number of Congress workers including MPCC president K Meghachandra and other leaders held up banners and chanted slogans as they carried out a rally from Imphal Congress Bhavan. When the rally reached Western Gate of Kangla fort and snaked through Imphal Raj Bhavan, a large number of police armed with riot gear arrived and blocked them from further carrying out the rally. As the protesters tried
to proceed forcibly, the police, pushed them back , following which confrontation ensued. The police took control of the situation after a brief struggle and pushed the protesters upto Congress Bhavan where the Congress workers staged a protest there again, blocking the traffic on the busy BT Road. During the protest, they alleged the ruling BJP of misusing government agencies like the ED for political mileage and raised many slogans against the BJP government. There too, the protesters faced off with the police who ordered them (Congress workers) to vacate the street for normal traffic. There were no reports
of injuries among the protesters and police personnel in both the face-off. However, MPCC president strongly condemned the police alleging the police of excessive towards the Congress workers who were carrying out a peaceful rally. The MPCC president said that they carried out the rally in solidarity with AICC leader Sonia Gandhi and against the BJP converting the Central government agencies as party’s agencies. “The ruling BJP has converted the agencies into party’s agencies. The party in power is using agencies like ED to defame opposition leaders, particularly AICC leaders,” he said. He said the Modi government is misusing almost all the Constitution bodies and agencies were being used as tools to humiliate target opposition leaders. He worried if such dictatorial activities of the BJP are allowed to continue, the democratic rights of the citizens of the country will be at stake. The MPCC president alleged that the BJP government is harassing the opposition leaders by misusing the ED while asking the reason behind summoning only the leaders of the Congress. Later, in a Facebook post, MPCC alleged that several Congress members were assaulted by the police during the protest rally. (Correspondent)
Murmu makes it to Raisina Hill when PA Sangma and Swell lost BSF, BGB to show zero tolerance towards insurgent groups

SHILLONG, JUL 21: Droupadi Murmu on Thursday scripted history by becoming the first tribal to be elected as the President after two tribal leaders from the Northeastern state of Meghalaya had failed to make it to occupy the Raisina Hills. Murmu, a tribal Santhal leader from Odisha and also the first tribal woman in India, was nominated by the ruling BJP-led NDA and defeated the opposition backed candidate Yashwant Sinha, who congratulated her on the victory. Late Pur no Agitok Sangma fought for the top constitutional post and campaigned aggressively after his candidature was proposed by BJD, AIADMK and backed by the BJP. He however, lost to Pranab Mukherjee who was the UPA’s candidate. Sangma, a tribal Garo leader from western part of

Meghalaya, had wanted a tribal to hold the post, but unfortunately he was not successful in fulfilling that dream. Although, Sangma failed to win the present the election he predicted that “soon India would have a tribal President.” But before Sangma the only other time a tribal stood for the top post was also a person from the region and from the tribal-dominated state of Meghalaya. In 1992, late George Gilbert Swell, a tribal Khasi from eastern part of Meghalaya, was nominated as the
Presidential candidate by the BJP and other opposition parties with the Congress in power. Swell lost to Congress’ Shankar Dayal Sharma, securing only 346,485 votes against his opponent’s 675,864 votes. Swell was the Deputy Speaker of the Lok Sabha apart from serving as the Ambassador of India to Norway and Iceland. In all these three elections there was another thing that was common-it was the BJP that nominated or supported a tribal for a President. Meghalaya Chief Min-
ister Conrad Sangma, who is also the youngest of the Sangma, has termed Murmu’s victory a “historic”. “It was indeed a great and historic moment in the history of this country where the president’s post is now being held by a tribal woman. And this was something that was in some ways, inconceivable many, many years back. And today, the fact that this is happening shows how this great condition of ours is moving forward in the right direction and I would like to thank all the people who voted for Murmu to become the
Gauhati HC grants bail to 19-yr-old student, two months after arrest for poem backing ULFA (I)
GUWAHATI, JUL 15 (PTI): The Gauhati High Court on Thursday granted bail to the 19-year old woman, who was arrested two months ago for allegedly writing a poem on social media in support of banned outfit ULFA (I). Justice Ajit Borthakur granted bail to Barshashree Buragohain, who is currently housed in the Golaghat Central Jail, after the state’s lawyer refrained from opposing her application. The judge directed that she be released on bail against one surety of Rs 25,000. Buragohain, was arrested on May 18 from Uriamghat in Golaghat for allegedly writing a post titled ‘ Akou Korim Rashtra Droh’ (will rebel against the nation again). She had earlier prayed for bail before the District and Sessions Court, Golaghat, which rejected her application. Her lawyer, Ritupallab Saikia, told PTI that she was likely to be released from jail on Friday after completion of necessary formalities. Buragohain, a BSc sec-
Barshashree Buragohain
ond year Maths student of Jorhat’s DCB College, had also filed a plea requesting that the Golaghat court allow her to appear for her semester examinations which began on July 16. The court had granted her permission to appear for her semester examination with necessary police escort and precautionary measures. It directed that arrangements be made in the “proper venue on each and every date as per the programme of the examination by providing necessary police escort party and by taking precautionary measures”.
The 19-year-old had, however, been writing her papers from jail, with the district administration appointing a magistrate as an invigilator. She filed another petition against the principal of the college who apparently had requested the district deputy commissioner’s to make the arrangements. The Golaghat court then directed that 19-yearold should appear for her examination, in accordance with the guidelines of Dibrugarh University, and the deputy commissioner cannot interfere in the process, her lawyer said. The court also issued a show-cause notice to the principal and directed her to furnish her reply by July 25 when the case comes up for hearing again. Buragohain was arrested on the basis of a complaint filed by police constable Pankaj Saikia alleging that she posted objectionable statements on Facebook which indicates that she is “engaged in criminal conspiracy and intends to wage a war against the nation”.
The FIR stated that she has also expressed the intent to join the banned ULFA(I) to bolster the confidence of its cadres which amounts to a “threat to the country’s sovereignty”. A resident of Teok in Jorhat district, Buragohain was arrested from Uriamghat where she had gone to visit a friend. Her arrest under the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA) had led to widespread protests and demands for her release with Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma saying that if her parents or anybody take the responsibility and see to it that she did not join the ULFA(I), she would be released. He maintained that she was arrested for her statement to join the banned ULFA(I) and not for writing a poem that she could appear for her exams or interviews. Sarma said that she was a daughter of the state and “we do not want her to die at the hands of the ULFA (I). We are trying to save her and counselling is going on”.
president of this country,” Conrad said. The Chief Minister also also thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi and other leaders for Murmu’s victory. “At this point in time, I also remember my late father who was somebody who truly believed in this and was a person who laid the foundation for this idea and this thought and today to see it. He would have been the proudest person in this country today,” he said Meanwhile, apart from the northeast, several states having large tribal populations would have reason to smile. According to reports India has the second highest concentration of tribal population after Africa. There are over 570 tribes in India and tribals constitute about 8 percent of the total population in India. There are about 90 million people who are tribals also known as adivasis.

ED questions Sonia for 3 hrs; Cong units protest
NEW DELHI, JUL 21 (PTI): The Enforcement Directorate on Thursday questioned Congress chief Sonia Gandhi in a money laundering case related to the National Herald newspaper. The day was a show of strength for the party with street protests and leaders courting arrest across the country. The questioning of the 75-year-old, who is recovering from Covid, lasted for about three hours and the session ended on her request, officials said. However, Congress leader Jairam Ramesh said the ED told Sonia Gandhi that they had no further questions and she could leave. Sonia Gandhi in turn said she would be willing to respond to any other questions they might have and was ready to stay on till 8 pm or 9 pm if necessary, Ramesh posted on Twitter. She also said she was a Covid patient and needed to take her medicines so she should be informed about what time she should appear next. BUNDELKHAND, JUL 21 (AGENCIES): Bundelkhand Expressway has collapsed at many places amid heavy rain. The craters on the road almost led to few major accidents, reports HW news. Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated Bundelkhand Expressway in UP on 16 July. But due to heavy rains, large craters have come up on the new expressway within 5 days, reports said. Bundelkhand Expressway was built after shedding around Rs 14,850 crore. However, the reality of that expressway has came to the fore within a few days. The Bundelkhand Expressway has collapsed at many places amid heavy rain yesterday evening. The craters on the road almost led to few major accidents, reports said. The Expressway has been made to give a new identity to Bundelkhand. This expressway starts from Bharatkup in Chitrakoot and is found at Kudrel in Etawah. Nadda makes key appointments in BJP state units NEW DELHI, JUL 21 (PTI): BJP president J P Nadda on Thursday made key organisational appointments in some state units of the party, drafting the RSS’ Rajesh G V as general secretary (organisation) in Karnataka. Rajesh G V replaces Arun Kumar, who has returned to the RSS, considered the ideological mentor of the BJP. Ajay Jamwal, who was the regional general secretary (organisation) in charge of northeastern states, will now look after Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh units of the party in the same position, according to a BJP statement. Manthri Srinivasulu has been moved from Telangana to Punjab as general secretary (organisation).
poor condition of the road. The UP’s leader of opposition wrote in Hindi: “This is a sample of the quality of BJP’s half-hearted development… On the other hand, the Bundelkhand Expressway was inaugurated by the big people that within a week, big pits of corruption came out on it. It is good that the runway was not built on this.” Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the Bundelkhand Expressway with publicity on July 16. After the inauguration of Expressway, it was opened for commercial and domestic vehicles. It has not even been five days since the start of the expressway that all the claims have been exposed. On the occasion of the inauguration of the expressway, PM Modi had said that: “The distance from Chitrakoot to Delhi by Bundelkhand Expressway has been reduced by 3-4 hours, but its benefit is more than that. This expressway will not only give speed to the vehicles here, but it will also accelerate the industrial progress of the entire Bundelkhand.”
was part of the questioning team. The summons to the Congress president took political centrestage in Parliament, where opposition leaders raised the issue, and on the streets with party workers staging massive protests. As parts of central Delhi went into gridlock, Sonia Gandhi reached the federal probe agency’s headquarters in Lutyens Delhi’s A P J Abdul Kalam Road a little after noon escorted by her Z+ category CRPF security cover. The Congress president, seen wearing a mask, was accompanied by her children Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra. Priyanka Gandhi was
allowed to stay in the Pravartan Bhawan headquarters of the agency, away from the questioning room, so she could be with her mother in case of a health issue and give her medicines. However, Rahul Gandhi left soon after. Ahead of Sonia Gandhi’s appearance, Delhi Police deployed a huge force, including CRPF and RAF personnel, and barricaded the entire over one kilometre stretch between her residence and the ED office. The Congress party slammed the agency’s action against its top leadership and termed it “political vendetta”. “All Congress MPs
and CWC members have courted mass arrest outside our party headquarters in a show of collective solidarity with Congress president Sonia Gandhi, a target of ‘Vishguru’s’ political vendetta,” said Congress general secretary Ramesh. His party colleague P Chidambaram said the ED is not higher than the Supreme Court. “What is that the ED wants to ‘investigate’ that will not be examined by the SC,” he asked. Other Opposition leaders voiced their protest too. Leaders of 13 political parties, including the DMK, Shiv Sena, RJD and the Left, met at Parliament House and issued a statement accusing the government of unleashing a “relentless campaign of vendetta against its political opponents and critics through the mischievous misuse of investigative agencies”. “Prominent leaders of a number of political parties have been deliberately targeted and subjected to harassment in an unprecedented manner,” the leaders said.
NEW DELHI, JUL 21 (PTI): The Enforcement Directorate has summoned Congress president Sonia Gandhi for a second round of questioning in a money laundering case related to the National Herald newspaper on July 25, officials said on Thursday. The Congress leader, who is recovering from Covid, was questioned for about two hours on Thursday. The questioning of the 75-yearold ended on her request, officials said. According to Ramesh, the ED said it had nothing to ask of her either Thursday or Friday. After which Sonia Gandhi said she was willing to appear on Monday, Ramesh added. An ED official said she was initially summoned again on July 26 but this was advanced to July 25 at her insistence.
Anurag Thakur speaks in the RS during ongoing Monsoon Session of Parliament. (PTI)
NEW DELHI, JUL 21 (IANS): Information and Broadcasting Minister Anurag Thakur said on Thursday that in 2021-22, the ministry took strong action against YouTube channels working against the interest of the country. Responding to a question in the Rajya Sabha, Thakur said the ministry acted against 94 YouTube channels, 19 social media accounts and 747 URLs and got them blocked. “These actions were taken under Section 69A of Information Technology Act,” he said. The minister added that the government acted strongly against agencies working against the sovereignty of the country by spreading fake news and propaganda on the internet. Referring to Alt News co-founder Mohammad Zubair, who was granted bail by the Supreme Court on Wednesday, Thakur said that it is essential to know the difference between a ‘fact-checker’ and someone who is trying to create tension in the society by staying behind the fact check. “If someone complains against them, action will be taken according to the law,” he said.
LS adjourned as govt wanted to discuss Antarctic Bill ‘I have set out to build Shiv NEW DELHI, JUL 21 (PTI): Lok Sabha proceedings were adjourned for the day on Thursday following a request from the government that the Indian Antarctic Bill, 2022 be taken up for consideration when Opposition members are also present in the House. Several Opposition members were not present in the House with many of them protesting outside over Congress president Sonia Gandhi’s questioning by the Enforcement Directorate in the National Herald money laundering case. After the House reassembled at 2:15 PM following a routine adjournment, Union minister Jitendra Singh said his request is that the bill be taken up for consideration only when Opposition members are present as it is an important legislation. presence of Opposition was negligible, and adjourned the proceedings for the day. “As members are absent in large number and Opposition is not there, so it is my suggestion and request that this is a very important bill and for the first time this issue is to be discussed... So can we take it up some other time and not today,” Singh asked as the House re-assembled. “The government’s desire is that the bill should not be passed without debate,” Mehtab said. BJP MP P P Chaud-
hary said this was an important bill and the Congress should have been in the House for debate as it is the primary responsibility of lawmakers that they stay in the House and discuss an important legislation. “It is a matter of regret that they are not in the House. If they would have been there, this bill could have been discussed,” he said. Another BJP MP Nishikant Dubey said the Congress and Opposition have “boycotted” the House when such an important

THANE, JUL 21 (PTI): Shiv Sena leader and former Maharashtra minister Aaditya Thackeray on Thursday said he is setting out to build the party organisation afresh, and added that the current government in the state led by Eknath Shinde would collapse as it was formed “illegally”. He was speaking at the launch of his three-day ‘Shiv Samvad Yatra’ in Bhiwandi town in Thane district, where he received a rousing welcome by his supporters. Speaking at the rally, Aaditya said, “I am embarking on this yatra and come to Bhiwandi to get the blessings of people. I have set out to build the Shiv Sena and Maharashtra afresh.” “The MVA government had carried out development works in the state. But in the present dispensation, there only two members in the cabinet (Shinde and Fadnavis). The state

is facing floods, but amid this situation, they (rebels) are trying to threaten us. But we will not pay heed to such tactics. I am sure this government will collapse. It was formed illegally,” the Yuva Sena chief said. He challenged the rebel MLAs to resign and face the elections again. “Our only mistake was that we could not play politics and hence we had to face this situation. We did not trouble those who were against us,” Thackeray added.

Mehtab said the sense of the House is to defer this bill to a different date and adjourned the proceedings till 11 AM Friday. The bill seeks to give effect to the Antarctic Treaty, the Convention on Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources and the protocol on Environmental Protection to the Antarctic Treaty. It also seeks to protect the Antarctic environment and regulate activities in the region. Earlier, Lok Sabha proceedings were adjourned briefly as Opposition parties voiced their protest against rising prices and the ED summons to Gandhi.

Nagaland Post VOL. XXXII NO. 226 DIMAPUR, FRIDAY, JULY 22, 2022
Myanmar’s only option
S
ince over a year , to be precise a year-and-half, when the conflict in Myanmar was triggered by the February 1, 2021, military coup staged by Gen. Min Aung Hlaing that toppled the democratically elected government of Nobel Peace Prize laureate Aung San Suu Kyi. Thee ongoing civil war has not only become a disaster for Myanmar, but also for countries across the region. The military’s takeover has been bloody and although one sided, the Pro Defence Forces(PDFs) have managed to take on the superiorly equipped military by depriving it of a victory. The fighting between Myanmar’s military and the People’s Defense Forces (PDFs), formed to defend communities against the military’s onslaught, has brought intense conflict to the western and northwestern parts of Myanmar, close to the border with India. For the government of India, the Myanmar civil war has put its security cooperation at the backburner. Due to major reverses and being bogged in the civil war, the Myanmar junta has failed to support India’s counter-insurgency efforts against Indian ‘Ethnic Armed Organisationis’(EAOs). Instead, the junta has forged some kind of opportunistic alliance with some Indian EAOs against pro-democracy PDFs and other EAOs in the border areas. New Delhi the Indian EAOs as a major national security threat and has partnered with the military junta to attack pro-democratic PDFs and EAOs in the border areas of Myanmar and India. Although itself a democracy, India has always maintained a close relationship with Myanmar’s military- an institution which has repeatedly undermined Myanmar’s pursuit of democracy and led authoritarian regimes for most of the past 70 years. India has adopted a restraint since it sees Myanmar’s military as a partner in its counterinsurgency efforts. U.N. officials believe that the junta has killed more than 2,000 civilians and arrested more than 14,000. Anti-regime forces have also allegedly carried out attacks on civilians believed to be abetting the military. The United Nations estimated last month that more than 700,000 people have been displaced since February 2021, adding to a population of nearly 350,000 people displaced before the coup. The conflict in the Myanmar-India border areas also undermines India’s geostrategic economic projects planned through Myanmar: the India-Myanmar-Thailand Trilateral Highway Project and the Kaladan Multi-Modal Transit Transport Project. These two projects make up the core of India’s Act East Policy, which aims to advance India’s influence to the east. Both projects run through Manipur and Mizoram into Myanmar, cutting across territory that has been ground zero of the popular effort to end military rule, and which is now subject to regular air raids and attacks by the military. In the ultimate analysis, the focus as per India’s perspective is for peace and development which could be cemented if there is a democratically elected government in Mynamar. It is time that nations across act as catalyst for democracy in Myanmar so as to guarantee that the voices of all its ethnic communities are heard. How long can the barrel of the gun suppress the democratic ideals of the people? A scenario which provides for constitutional democracy under which, the various ethnic communities in Myanmar can participate in development will be the biggest boon for peace. Even in India, peaceful solution and not military solution, has been the policy with regard to various separatist groups.
DailyDevotion The Doorway to the Kingdom
Blessed are the poor in spirit… —Matthew 5:3
Beware of thinking of our Lord as only a teacher. If Jesus Christ is only a teacher, then all He can do is frustrate me by setting a standard before me I cannot attain. What is the point of presenting me with such a lofty ideal if I cannot possibly come close to reaching it? I would be happier if I never knew it. What good is there in telling me to be what I can never be— to be “pure in heart” (Matthew 5:8), to do more than my duty, or to be completely devoted to God? I must know Jesus Christ as my Savior before His teaching has any meaning for me other than that of a lofty ideal which only leads to despair. But when I am born again by the Spirit of God, I know that Jesus Christ did not come only to teach— He came to make me what He teaches I should be. The redemption means that Jesus Christ can place within anyone the same nature that ruled His own life, and all the standards God gives us are based on that nature. The teaching of the Sermon on the Mount produces a sense of despair in the natural man— exactly what Jesus means for it to do. As long as we have some self-righteous idea that we can carry out our Lord’s teaching, God will allow us to continue until we expose our own ignorance by stumbling over some obstacle in our way. Only then are we willing to come to Him as paupers and receive from Him. “Blessed are the poor in spirit….” This is the first principle in the kingdom of God. The underlying foundation of Jesus Christ’s kingdom is poverty, not possessions; not making decisions for Jesus, but having such a sense of absolute futility that we finally admit, “Lord, I cannot even begin to do it.” Then Jesus says, “Blessed are you…” (Matthew 5:11). This is the doorway to the kingdom, and yet it takes us so long to believe that we are actually poor! The knowledge of our own poverty is what brings us to the proper place where Jesus Christ accomplishes His work.

Post-mortem
Shifting the meaning of India’s symbols
A
s the first Republic of India gives way to its second iteration, its symbols must also undergo a change. Since this shift has yet not been officially announced, the changes must enter via the backdoor, through disingenuous means: distortions, mutilation, erasure and interpolation. Yet there is a clear theory to this theft: we are being made to break free of nationalism of the freedom struggle, of values enshrined in the Constitution, and of the historic memories shaped in the 20th century. This vacuum is being filled by grand spectacles, new values, fresh memories. The forthcoming Amrit Mahotsav, the 75th anniversary of our independence, is not so much about remembering our march to freedom but about forgetting it, about marking the distance of “new India” from the tryst with destiny. The new Lion Capital installed atop the new Parliament building is a small piece in the new symbolic order. There is, no doubt, a difference — not just in camera angle — between the Sarnath original and its latest “interpretation”. The original Lion Capital of Asoka stood for what has been called the “righteous republic”: power in its calm and majestic form, guided by the dharmachakra, the wheel of righteousness. In his essay ‘Choosing the National Symbols of India’, this is how Professor Bhikhu Parekh interprets the national emblem: “The lions, sitting back to back and facing in four directions, are taken to signify the importance of power, which is supposed to be stable and desirable only when guided by the law of righteousness as symbolized by the wheel.” The lions in the latest version are clearly more menacing, ferocious, even furious. They are visibly more muscular and large chested. And the new version is really big — 6.5 metres as opposed to 1.6 metres of the original. As Rajya Sabha member and cultural historian Jawhar Sircar tweeted by posting pictures of the two: “Original is on the left, graceful, regally confident. The one on the right is Modi’s version, put above new Parliament building — snarling, unnecessarily aggressive and disproportionate.” I am not concerned with the technicality of whether the latest version constitutes an insult to the national symbol. What interests
me here is the shift in meaning. The lions in Asoka’s Lion Capital stand upon dharmachakra, they draw their power from dharma. The lions in Modi’s Central Vista step on dharmachakra; they are power unto themselves. They are to original lions what the new raudra hanuman image is to the earlier images of hanuman. Or what the rule of bulldozers is to the rule of law. Changing code for the flag This shift is accompanied by another less noticed change in our national symbols. Recently, the government changed the Flag Code of India, 2002 to allow for machine-made polyester tiranga. That snaps the last link the national flag had with Mahatma Gandhi. As is well known, Gandhi improvised on the earlier versions of India’s national flag to create the tricolour that we have today. His distinctive contribution to it was the charkha in the middle. The Constituent Assembly replaced the charkha with the chakra, drawn again from dharmachakra. But the Flag Code still retained one last Gandhian element: “The National Flag of India shall be made of hand spun and hand woven wool/silk/khadi bunting.” The Code was routinely followed in its violation, as most codes are. The country has been flooded with plastic tricolours, mostly made in China, and flags of mill-made cloth, surely from genetically modified Bt Cotton. Still the Code forced the government and other official bodies to use khadi tirangas, all procured from Karnataka Khadi Gramodyoga Samyukta Sangha that was accredited to manufacture and supply the national flag. Besides the symbolic and emotional value, it was a source of livelihood for thousands of families. The India Handmade Collective protested against this shift to allow synthetic flags. Here again, let us sidestep issues of legality, economics and practicality and focus instead on the symbolic. Over the last few years, the Modi government has encouraged the installation of gigantic national flags at key locations. The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government in Delhi has mimicked this move. It is no secret that the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) never approved of the tiranga – just as it did not accept Jana Gana Mana – and did not put up one at its Nagpur headquarters for half a cen-
tury. Now that they have embraced the look of the tricolour, the new rulers must tinker with its meaning by changing, literally, its texture. The aesthetics of khadi brought the flag closer to the lives of the people: coarse, uneven and real. It was a reminder of the harsh experience of the struggle against colonialism. At a philosophic plane, it stood for the dignity of labour. The shiny, smooth and large synthetic flags symbolise the new in-your-face nationalism. This flag is to its older cousin what the Bangalore IT jobbers are to their rural cousins. Crafting symbolism of power In a review of the latest PM Museum, the Pradhanmantri Sangrahalaya, ThePrint’s Opinion Editor Rama Lakshmi described its approach as “big-is-best, gizmo-laden, dazzling”. That characterises much of Modi’s carefully crafted symbolism of power. If the National War Memorial is an attempt to shift the memory of struggle from the war for independence to wars after independence, the grand Statue of Unity and the Ambedkar Memorial are attempts at appropriating what the present rulers can possibly steal from the pre-independence period. The Central Vista is yet to be inaugurated, but we can guess that it would be an exercise in grandeur, meant to inspire awe. Perhaps this is what Walter Benjamin meant by ‘aestheticisation of politics’: when masses are provided expression without any real effect, when art serves to create spectacles that entertain and dazzle the people, helping them forget their life conditions. Modi understands symbolism more than most political leaders do. He knows how to use architecture, sculptures, paintings and lectures to cast masses in the mould of the State. Gigantic scale inspires awe, dwarfing the quotidian pettiness of life. Technical gizmos assure progress, irrespective of the trajectory of my own life. Synthetic appearance smoothens all wrinkles of real life. Aggression builds collective confidence that covers a deep sense of inferiority. The transition from shanta [tranquility] rasa to raudra [fury] rasa, from inner to external, is an invitation to a new political community. They call it ‘New India’. Separate High Court for Nagaland
I
n the glorious identity of an independent judiciary, rule of Law is Supreme. The Constitution of India was enacted on 26th of January 1950. Article 3 of the Constitution empowers for formation of new States. It is the source of the State of Nagaland Act, 1962 which was enacted on 4th of September, 1962 giving effect to the embryo of the State of Nagaland as the 16th state in the Union of India on 1st of December, 1963. Article 214 of the Constitution also provides that there shall be a High Court for every State. A quintessential State is when three pillars viz., Legislative, Executive and Judiciary are established to the extent of maturity. However, it is disheartening to state that Nagaland even after attainment of 58 years of its Statehood is lacking behind with the rest of the States in the Union of India even in the legal field. Evidently, the most distinguished requirement at hand is the Separate High Court for the State of Nagaland. Since Statehood, Nagaland has been functioning under the jurisdiction of Gauhati High Court with the inauguration of the Circuit Bench at Kohima on 1.12.1972. Subsequently, on 10.2.1990, to further the cause, a Permanent Bench known as the Gauhati High Court Kohima Bench was inaugurated by the then Chief Justice of India Hon’ble Mr. Justice Subyasachi Mukherji. It is astoundingly humbling and gratifying to acknowledge the fact that Nagaland has introduced many imminent legal personalities ascending to the extent of being the Judge of the Supreme Court of India, Hon’ble Mr. Justice H.K. Sema. With utmost regard to the guardianship of the Hon’ble Gauhati High Court, it is further acknowledged that a separate fully fledged High Court is the need of the hour. Nagaland as a State is incomplete without a Separate High Court of its own and it should not be further procrastinated. As such, it is to be understood that establishing a separate High Court would not only serve and benefit the State in general and the public/citizens in particular but would also be an ultimate representation of the governance of the Rule of Law. As for any given society or State to emerge and evolve prosperously, Rule of Law has to be prioritized. The notion of a more vibrant and stronger Nagaland can only be attained at the cost of fulfilling this requirement. It is only then a new dawn on Nagaland will be witnessed. The cardinal point of note is that without a separate High Court, the State of Nagaland is being deprived of its Constitutional status amongst the equals. It is absolutely disheartening to acknowledge that the Foundation Stone for the construction of the Nagaland High Court which was laid on 21.5.2007 by the then Chief Justice of India Mr. Justice K.G. Balakrishnan is nowhere near completion. While on the contrary, the Foundation Stone which was laid down on 30.4.2006 for the construction of Manipur High Court was inaugurated on 25.3.2013. During such deprivation, the visit at the construction site of the Nagaland High Court for status review by our Hon’ble Governor Mr. Prof. Jagdish Mukhi is highly appreciated. His Excellency’s concern speaks volume and it will not be wrong to admit and apprehend that such addressal from all the competent authorities shall surely pave way for speedy accomplishment. Fifty-Eight years and counting since statehood but the vision of our pioneers of a vibrant, vigilant and vigorous Nagaland is still unattained. Therefore, the Concerned Authorities are further ardently encouraged to embrace the necessity of a separate High Court and expeditiously invest for a full fledged Nagaland High Court in the fair interest of the State. Talimoa ) President, Nagaland Law Students’ Federation (NLSF) (2019-2021), President, Mokokchung Law College Students’ Union (2014-2018), Para Legal Volunteer (PLV), Mokokchung District Legal Services Authority (MDLSA) (2015-2018)
The fear to live in freedom “People often prefer a very limited, punishing regime-rather than face the anxiety of freedom” Jean Paul Sartre. (Reflection from BibleExodus) y interest in the Naga’s freedom movement came through reading the Bible especially the story of Exodus. It was about people who dreamed of freedom and took risk to go out from a known place (Egypt) to an unknown place (Promised Land); from bondage to freedom and from slavery to liberty. The most fascinating component of the story is about their apprehension of life in freedom as they were accustomed to the life under bondage. Most of the time, the Ten Plagues (Exodus 7-11) that befell on Egypt was solely read and interpreted as a punishment for Pharaoh for not letting the Israelites to leave Egypt. But this event (Ten Plagues) has to be read and understood from the perspective of the Israelites who had become very stubborn and who believed in God half-heartedly. They were born and they grew up under the bondage of Egyptians and hence accustomed to such harsh life. They also had a sense of security under the protection of mighty Egyptian Kings. Many were afraid of losing the little eases they had once they leave Egypt. They could not fully understand what life in freedom is. They could not understand what God has in store for them in freedom. Many of them hence preferred prison-like life in Egypt rather than taking the risk of exploring an unknown life in freedom. In this situation, they were not only at the verge of losing their freedom forever but also put their faith in God at great risk. God then sent Moses with a message of liberation – to give them liberation from Egyptian’s oppression as well as to restore
M
their relationship with God. Moses knew very well that it will not be an easy task to deal with the Israelites in Egypt. That forced him to question God many times before he finally accepted God’s call and went to Pharaoh’s court (Exodus 3-4). As he arrives with the message of God for liberation, many Israelites, as expected, couldn’t understand the purpose of liberation and the greatness of God. Many of them were not willing to leave Egypt. They thought that Pharaoh was the most powerful man and there is no powerful country like Egypt in the world. They were afraid of Pharaoh rather than God. In this context, God hardened Pharaoh’s heart to oppress them in order to show them that God is more powerful than Pharaoh. The ten plagues that affected the Egyptians became a necessity to exorcise the demon of fear from the unbelieving heart of the Israelites. Hence, God’s intervention in the liberation movement was not only for physical liberation but also importantly to build up good relationship through worship (Exodus 9:1). In this sense, liberation carries both vertical and horizontal significance. God demonstrated various wondrous deeds to transform their hardened hearts because they needed new heart and mind to live in a new land as freed people. Only when they were finally ready, God took them out from Egypt. Unfortunately, even while journeying to the Promised Land, some of them wanted to go back to Egypt. The incident of crossing the Red Sea was another lesson for those Israelites who still envied the power of Pharaoh and Egypt. The powerless Israelites were then kept in between the
mighty Rea Sea and the powerful Pharaoh’s armies. They complained to Moses and Aaron for taking them out of Egypt to die. God then opened the way for them to escape whereas their enemies perished. In the process of liberation, they got chance to learn many new things which they never forgot long after they settled down in the Promised Land. Despite living under the oppressive regime, there was food to survive in Egypt (Exodus 16:3). Many Israelites had also accumulated wealth. They had developed close attachment with Egypt. They were apprehensive of the new place. They were like a bird in a cage habituated to live in bondage solely depending on owner’s mercy to survive. They might be scared thinking that once they were set free from the cage, they would struggle hard to get their daily food. The real problem with them was the lack of faith in God. They did not understand that God will provide all their needs. God then taught them a great lesson by keeping them in the wilderness for forty years. There they neither toiled nor sowed but God fed them with manna. God has enough resources to keep everyone alive. But when they tried to accumulate and hoard manna it was turned into worm the next morning/ day (Exodus 16). Greediness is against God’s will as it causes the poor and the weak to starvation and death. God provided them meat when they were yearning for it (Exodus16:13). God also provided them water when they feel thirsty (Exodus 17). As long as they believe God, there’s no need for them to worry about food and drinks. God provides
all their needs. God’s economy is economy of life that comes along with social responsibility and religious significance. Can the Nagas reflect on the history of the Israelites to pursue and achieve their goal? Nagas have been wandering in the wilderness for too long. It’s time to go out and enjoy the freedom as envisaged by our bygone leaders. Those who are afraid (especially the rich propertied class) thinking of losing their wealth once they get freedom are those people who are ignoring or failing to check the bountiful blessing bestowed upon the Nagas by God. Naga’s homeland is filled with rich natural resources (mineral, oil and gas, abundant water sources, fertile land, etc), and biodiversity hotspot in the world. The sprawling mountain ranges, valleys and hills and evergreen virgin forests testify the goodness of God. It is one of the best inhabitable parts in the world with very less natural calamity. There is no reason to be afraid about economy. The ‘dependency mentality’ of sucking milk from oppressor’s cow for whole life should be given up. How long should we live on fallen crumbs collected from other’s table? In terms of both natural and human resources, the Nagas today are well ahead of India when she got independence in 1947. Freedom is not determined by the size of geographical area, economic status, educational position or number of populations. It is based on rights. Mahatma Gandhi said, “Nagas have every right to be independent.” Freedom is God’s gift. However, freedom does not come cheaply to any nation. It requires lots of physical
and mental preparation because along with the joy of freedom is also a fear of the unknown. But what is life without taking risk? Gandhi said, “Freedom is not worth having if it does include the freedom to make mistakes.” Freedom can be exciting with many things to explore. What we need today is freedom- the freedom to dream freely, to decide freely and live freely. For so long we have allowed the oppressors to shape our life. For how long should we allow others to dominate and rule over us? Hadn’t the Israelites moved out from Egypt during the time of Moses, they would have been a lost nation immersed under the mighty Egyptian empire. They won’t have history. They won’t be a people, a nation and we won’t have known them today. Gautama Buddha said, “If you don’t fight for what you want, don’t cry for what you lost.” If we do not stand up and fight for our freedom today, tomorrow we may become a lost nation and our cry for it may be in vain. Rise up! Youth of Nagas. Gird up your loins. Fasten your belt. Come out from defeatist mentality. Although we were born under the bondage, we should not die under it. Leave aside the fear to live in freedom as there are many exciting things welcoming us ahead. It is God who will give us freedom, and not any national political party or leader. God’s pillars of cloud and fire that led the Israelites to the promised land (Exodus 13:17ff) will lead us to our destination one day. Let’s fully prepare ourselves for freedom and give God a chance to lead us on. Z. K. Pahrü Pou Mission Colony, Pfutsero

Govt wary of village on Doklam plateau
New satellite images accessed by NDTV indicate that a Chinese village, constructed 9 km East of the Doklam plateau where Indian and Chinese forces faced off in 2017.
NEW DELHI, JUL 21 (PTI): India on Thursday said it keeps an eye on all developments having bearing on national security in the backdrop of reports of China setting up a village in Doklam plateau. External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Arindam Bagchi also said the government takes measures accordingly. “We keep an eye on all
developments having bearing on national security and take measures accordingly,” he said. Bagchi was replying to a question on new satellite images that showed construction of a Chinese village east of the Doklam plateau on the Bhutanese side. The Indian and Chinese armies were locked in a 73-day stand-off at the Doklam tri-junction after
China tried to extend a road in the area that Bhutan claimed belonged to it. The NDTV came out with the images on Tuesday captured by MAXAR. It said alongside the village is a neatly marked allweather carriageway, which is part of China’s “extensive land grab” in Bhutan. The road could give China access to a strategic ridge in the Doklam plateau.

Efforts on to extradite Goldy Brar: Punjab DGP CHANDIGARH, JUL 21 (PTI): The Punjab Police is making efforts to extradite Canada-based Goldy Brar, who had claimed the responsibility for the murder of singer Sidhu Moosewala, state DGP Gaurav Yadav said on Thursday. He said there is a high degree of possibility that the AK-47 rifle recovered from the two gangsters after an encounter in Amritsar was the same weapon used in the killing of the singer. Yadav along with AntiGangster Task Force chief Pramod Ban and other senior police officers on Thursday briefed Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann about the Amritsar encounter. Gangsters Jagroop Singh Roopa and Manpreet Singh, alias Mannu Kusa, allegedly involved in the murder of Moosewala were gunned down in a nearly five-hour-long encounter with the Punjab Police at an Amritsar village on Wednesday. Police had recovered an AK-47 rifle and two pistols after the operation. “We gave a detailed briefing to CM saab about the operation,” said Yadav while talking to reporters here after meeting CM Mann. Efforts being made to

eliminate the gangster culture and the drug menace were also reviewed, he said. This war against gangsters will continue, said Yadav adding, “We will root out gangsters and drugs from the state.” Replying to a question on Goldy Brar, Yadav said a red corner notice has been issued by Interpol against him. “We are making efforts for his extradition,” said Yadav. After the killing of Moosewala on May 29, Canada-based Goldy Brar, who is the member of the Lawrence Bishnoi gang, had claimed the responsibility for the murder. Satinderjit Singh, alias Goldy Brar, a native of Muktsar, had gone to Canada on a student visa in 2017. The Punjab Police had earlier said that gangster Lawrence Bishnoi was the “mastermind” in Moosewala’s killing.
Gov rejects World Press Freedom Index findings
NEW DELHI, JULY 21 (PTI): The government on Thursday told Parliament that it does not agree with the conclusions drawn by ‘Reporters Without Borders’ in the World Press Freedom Index that ranked India 150th among 180 nations. Information and Broadcasting Minister Anurag Thakur, in a written reply in the Rajya Sabha, said the government did not agree with the conclusions drawn by the organisation for various reasons including “very low sample size, little or no weightage to fundamentals of democracy, adoption of a methodology which is questionable and non-transparent”. Thakur was responding to separate questions put by Leader of the Opposition in the Rajya Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge and AAP member Sanjay Singh. The minister said the Government was committed to ensuring the right to freedom of speech and expression enshrined under Article 19 of the Constitution. Thakur said the Press Council of India (PCI) has been set up under the Press Council Act, 1978 mainly to preserve the freedom of the press and improve the standards of newspapers and news agencies in the country.
Break BJP’s prison, bring people’s govt in 2024: Mamata

KOLKATA, JUL 21 (PTI): Launching a frontal attack on the BJP, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Thursday asserted that the saffron camp will be “swept away from power” at the Centre by people’s mandate in the 2024 Lok Sabha polls. Speaking at a massive TMC rally here, Banerjee also criticised the BJP for destroying institutions of the country, contending that those who had no role in the Independence struggle are now trying to rewrite the country’s history. “The BJP will be swept away from power by the people’s mandate in 2024. They will be defeated. I can certainly say that the BJP will not get single-party majority, and once that happens, others will unite to form the next government,”
she said. “Break BJP’s prison, bring people’s government in 2024,“ the feisty Trinamool Congress boss said at the Martyrs’ Day rally amid thunderous applause. Banerjee also slammed the Union government over the increase in GST rates on pre-packed and labelled food items such as cereals, pulses and flour weighing less than 25 kg, terming it as “anti-people”. “What will the people eat when the BJP is implementing GST on everything, even puffed rice and milk powder. How will the poor survive in this country?” she said. Cautioning the saffron camp, the chief minister said if it tries to dislodge the Bengal government “just like in Maharashtra, they would get a befitting reply”.

60 pilots, 150 cabin crew failed breath analyzer test
NEW DELHI, JULY 21 (IANS): A total of 60 pilots and 150 cabin crew members tested positive following the breath analyzer (BA) test in the last two and a half years. Breath Analyzer tests are conducted to ensure aviation safety is not compromised due to the consumption of alcohol by pilots and cabin crews. During the period from January 1, 2020 to June 30, 2022, as per the provision of Civil Aviation Requirements (CAR) Section-5, Series-F, Part-III, no license has been cancelled. However, a total
of 210 pilots and crew members have been suspended. According to a Parliament reply on Thursday, there is a systematic safety oversight process in place for monitoring the compliance of Rules and Civil Aviation Requirements by the airlines. “This is a continuing process and includes surveillance, spot checks and regulatory audits embodied in Annual Surveillance Plan (ASP) of DGCA. The findings of safety oversight exercises are followed up with the concerned operator for compliance and the
observations are closed only after due verification,” said the reply. The compliance of the action taken by the operator is verified during the next audit and surveillance. In case of any violations or non-compliance to regulations detected during audit and surveillance, enforcement action including financial penalty is imposed by the DGCA. DGCA in its guidelines had earlier said that airlines must ensure that 50 per cent of their cockpit and cabin-crew members are subjected to preflight alcohol tests on a daily basis. As per DGCA advisory, even 12 hours after a bout of drink, when blood alcohol level remained zero, there could be a decrease in performance. “Alcohol present in body even in small quantities jeopardizes flight safety on several counts and is likely to adversely affect an aviator well into the hangover period.

It is not that it was a close election. But the signal that the Opposition is divided will send a very bad message,” a senior leader said. The new framework presents a more nuanced and comprehensive outlook for measuring innovation performance in India, with the introduction of 66 unique indicators, as compared to the 36 indicators used in the previous edition (India Innovation Index 2020), it added. The report noted that the pandemic-induced lockdowns impacted 311 million students. “In the absence of physical schooling, remote learning was actively introduced across the country... the number of internet users in the country subsequently rose to 83.37 crore in June 2021,” it said.

KHARKIV (UKRAINE), JUL 21 (AP): Russian shelling pounded a densely populated area in Ukraine’s second-largest city Thursday, killing at least two people and injuring at least 21 with a barrage that struck a mosque, a medical facility and a shopping area, according to officials and witnesses at the scene. Police in the northeast city of Kharkiv said cluster bombs hit Barabashovo Market. a public bazaar where Associated Press journalists saw a woman crying over her dead husband’s body. Local officials said the shelling also struck a bus stop, a gym and a residential building. The bombardment c a m e a f t e r Ru s s i a o n Wednesday reiterated its plans to seize territories beyond eastern Ukraine, where the Russian military has spent months trying to conquer Ukraine’s Donbas region, which is south of Kharkiv. Ukrainian officials recently aired their plans to try to recapture Russianoccupied areas near the country’s southern Black Sea coast.
ISLAMABAD, JUL 21 (PTI): Childhood memories flooded 90-year-old Reena Chhibber Varma’s mind and she became overjoyed and emotional as she visited her home in Pakistan, which she had to leave 75 years ago at the time of the Partition. Pune-based Varma’s long-cherished dream of visiting her ancestral home in Rawalpindi materialised when Pakistan granted her a three-month visa and she arrived in Lahore on July 16 via the Wagah-Attari border. On reaching Prem Nawas Mahalla on Wednesday, the residents in the neighbourhood gave her a rousing welcome. Drums were played and flower petals were showered on her.

WHO again considers declaring monkeypox a global emergency
BAG H DA D, J U L 2 1 (IANS): At least five people were killed and some 17 wounded in a Turkish bombardment on a resort in Iraq’s northern province of Duhok, a medical source said. The Turkish artillery pounded a resort in Parakh village in the Zakho area, leaving at least five people killed and some 17 injured, a source from Duhok province told Xinhua news agency on condition of anonymity. Most of the victims of the bombardment were tourists from central and southern Iraq provinces, the source said. Noor Nafie, a female lawmaker, called on the parliament to hold an emergency session to discuss the bombing. The Turkish side has yet to comment on the incident. The Turkish forces frequently carry out ground operations, air strikes, and artillery bombardment in Iraq’s semi-autonomous region of Kurdistan, especially the Qandil Mountains, the main base of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK). The PKK is listed as a terrorist organisation by Turkiye, the US, and the European Union.
LONDON, JUL 21 (AP): As the World Health Organisation’s emergency c o m m i t t e e c o nv e n e s Thursday to consider for the second time within weeks whether to declare monkeypox a global crisis, some scientists say the striking differences between the outbreaks in Africa and in developed countries will complicate any coordinated response. African officials say they are already treating the continent’s epidemic as an emergency. But experts elsewhere say the mild version of monkeypox in Europe, North America and beyond makes an emergency declaration unnecessary even if the virus can’t be stopped. British officials recently downgraded their assessment of the disease, given its lack of severity. Monkeypox has been entrenched for decades in
LONDON, JUL 21 (PTI): Rishi Sunak has vowed to work “night and day” as he embarked upon the final and toughest stretch of his campaign on Thursday to win over the Conservative Party membership to be elected party leader and British Prime Minister. The British-Indian exminister won a decisive mandate from the Tory parliamentary party to take on Foreign Secretary Liz Truss in the race to replace Boris Johnson. The 42-year-old former Chancellor was a clear frontrunner among the Tory members of Parliament – 137 of whom voted in favour of him against Truss’ 113 – but his camp knows they face an uphill task to replicate the winning streak of every voting round since last week with the wider party membership. Thursday’s latest bookie odds on the betting aggregator Oddschecker after Wednesday’s final round of MP votes show Truss in a comfortable lead over Sunak. “I will work night and

She sang while standing on the balcony and cried remembering her childhood. Varma said that she did not feel she was from another country, the Pakistani media on Thursday quoted her as saying. “The people living on both sides of the border love each other very much and we should remain as one,” she said. She kept looking at the door and wall of the house including her bedroom, yard and sitting room for a long time. She talked about her life back in those days. She told neighbours that she used to stand on the balcony and hum when she was little. She sang the same 75-year-old tune to reminisce about her childhood and cried. dominated politics in the country for much of the past two decades, to resign. After demonstrators stormed the presidential palace and several other government buildings, President Rajapaksa fled and then resigned. Wickremesinghe will have a mandate to serve out the rest of Rajapaksa’s term, which ends in November 2024. It was 45 years ago on July 21, 1977 that Wickremesinghe contested an election to enter Parliament for the first time. Wickremesinghe, who has been in Parliament for nearly five decades, was appointed as prime minister in May, nearly two years after his United National Party (UNP) was routed and failed to win a single seat in the general election held in 2020. Widely accepted in political circles as a man who could manage the economy with far-sighted policies, Wickremesinghe is struggling to fix the economy which, he said, had collapsed at the time of his appointment in May.

Kharkiv Mayor Ihor Terekhov said the attacks early Thursday targeted one of the most crowded areas of the city, which had a prewar population of about 1.4 million. “The Russian army is randomly shelling Kharkiv, peaceful residential areas, civilians are being killed,” Terekhov said. “Be careful!” The police claim that cluster bombs hit Barabashovo Market could not be independently confirmed. The AP journalists at the scene shortly after the attack reported seeing burned-out cards and a bus pierced by shrapnel. The Kharkiv region’s
governor, Oleh Syniehubov, said four people were in grave condition and a child was among those wounded in the shelling. Russian forces also have shelled wheat fields in the area, setting them on fire, he said. Elsewhere, Russian forces shelled the southern city of Mykolaiv overnight as well as the eastern cities of Kramatorsk and Kostiantynivka, where two schools were destroyed after a civilian was killed Wednesday, Ukrainian officials said. As of 8 a.m. Thursday, Russian shelling of cities across Ukraine killed at least five people and wounded at
least 17 more in 24 hours, Ukraine’s presidential office reported. The scattered attacks illustrate broader war aims beyond Russia’s previously declared focus on the Donbas region’s Donetsk and Luhansk provinces, where front line battles mostly unfolded in recent weeks. W h e n i t i nv a d e d Ukraine on Feb. 24, Russia quickly seized territory but withdrew from the capital region and north after about six weeks to concentrate on seizing Donetsk and Luhansk, which pro-Moscow separatists have partly controlled since 2014. Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov told state-controlled RT television and the RIA Novosti news agency in an interview published Wednesday that Russia plans to retain control over more territory, including the Kherson and Zaporizhzhia regions in the south. M o s c ow ’s c u r r e n t strategy also envisions making gains elsewhere, Lavrov said. His comments indicated the war could flare up rather than wind down in the weeks to come.

Italy’s Mario Draghi resigns after govt implodes
Mario Draghi
ROME, JUL 21 (AP): Italian Premier Mario Draghi resigned Thursday after key coalition allies boycotted a confidence vote, signalling the likelihood of an early election and a renewed period of uncertainty for Italy and Europe at a critical time. Draghi tendered his resignation to President Sergio Mattarella during a morning meeting at the Quirinale Palace. Mattarella, who rejected a similar resignation offer from the premier last week, “took note” of the new one and asked Draghi’s government to remain on in a caretaker fashion, the president’s office said. Draghi’s government of national unity imploded
Wednesday after members of his uneasy coalition of right, left and populists rebuffed his appeal to band back together to finish the Italian Parliament’s natural term and ensure implementation of a European Unionfunded pandemic recovery program. Instead, the center-right Forza Italia and League parties and the populist 5-Star Movement boycotted a confidence vote in the Senate, a clear sign they were done as partners in the former European Central Bank chief ’s 17-month government. “Thank you for all the work done together in this period,” Draghi told the lower Chamber of Deputies on Thursday morning before going to see Mattarella. Clearly moved by the applause he received there, he repeated a quip that even central bank chiefs have hearts. Italian newspapers on Thursday were united in their outrage at the surreal outcome, given Italy is dealing with soaring inflation and energy costs, Russia’s

former finance minister Basil Rajapaksa in recent weeks in the face of massive anti-government protests. Wickremesinghe’s victory could inflame the situation once again as many anti-government protesters see him as inextricably tied to the erstwhile Rajapaksa regime, blamed for the country’s worst economic crisis since independence in 1948. A few hundred protesters quickly gathered after Wickremesinghe was elected as president to express their outrage as they see him as part of the problematic political establishment. Wickremesinghe, who has been leading the crucial talks with the International Monetary Fund (IMF), last week said that negotiations were nearing conclusion. Sri Lanka needs about USD 5 billion in the next six months to cover basic necessities for its 22 million people, who have been struggling with long queues, worsening shortages and power cuts. T20I: NZ beat Ireland by 88 runs; seal series
STORMONT, JUL 21 (IANS): Dane Cleaver hit his maiden T20I fifty, an unbeaten 78 off 55 deliveries, while Michael Bracewell took a hat-trick and Ish Sodhi ran through the middleorder to give New Zealand a series-sealing victory over Ireland by 88 runs. After Cleaver’s efforts took New Zealand to 178/4, Sodhi ran through the Irish middle-order with 3-21 and Bracewell finished off things in style with a hat-trick in his very first over in T20Is to bowl out Ireland for 91 in 13.5 overs, taking an unassailable lead in the series with one match still to play. Pushed into batting first, Finn Allen looked to attack from the off, pulling the fourth ball he faced by Craig Young for a six and lofting Barry McCarthy’s first ball high and handsome over the leg-side. He raced to 35 off 20 balls before slicing Josh Little back over the bowler’s head, with McCarthy running in to take an excellent sliding catch.

NAGALAND POST, DIMAPUR FRIDAY, JULY 22, 2022
New Zealand’s Dane Cleaver plays a shot against Ireland.
Despite conceding 40-0 in the first four overs, Ireland restricted New Zealand to 34-2 in the next six. The Black Caps switched gears upon entering the second half of the innings, striking 48 runs between overs 11 and 14. They were particularly severe on McCarthy as Cleaver played an audacious reverse-scoop for six and Glenn Phillips guided a more orthodox boundary down to the same third area. With Phillips also smashing Little over midwicket for six, he seemed
set for a repeat of his Player of the Match performance in the first T20I. But Young once again provided the breakthrough, locating the right length to beat Phillips’ attempted off-side stroke and taking out his middle stump. But there was no dislodging Cleaver, who having taken his time to get set, put together a match-winning innings. He enjoyed one significant slice of good fortune as Lorcan Tucker missed a stumping on 40, but deserved his maiden
international half-century, brought up with a flicked six over deep square-leg. With Cleaver muscling the first ball of Young’s final over for six, and he and Daryl Mitchell hitting three fours off the first four balls of the 19th over, it seemed as if New Zealand might be headed towards 190. But an excellent finish from Little and Mark Adair kept the target to 180, keeping Ireland in the contest. Little bounced out Mitchell as Tucker completed the catch, while a Cleaver slice over backward point was the only boundary Adair conceded in his final over. In the chase, Paul Stirling got going straight away in reply, flicking the third ball of the chase off his pads for six. Three more boundaries followed, two hammered through the off-side and one wristed down the leg-side, but his dismissal, lofted without distance to the field-
er, precipitated a slide which Ireland failed to halt. Gareth Delany was bowled first ball by Jacob Duffy, with the inform Harry Tector run out soon after to leave the hosts 27-3, one ball into the fifth over. Andrew Balbirnie and Curtis Campher both found the fine-leg fence in the sixth over, the captain clipping stylishly and the all-rounder ramping inventively, but the respite was only temporary, with the tumble of wickets soon resuming. Balbirnie drove at a full, wide ball but could only edge behind before Ish Sodhi’s doublestrike left Ireland 45-6 and in deep trouble. Brief scores: New Zealand 179-4 in 20 overs (Dane Cleaver 78 not out, Finn Allen 35; Joshua Little 2-31, Craig Young 2-34) beat Ireland 91 all out in 13.5 overs (Mark Adair 27, Paul Stirling 21; Michael Bracewell 3-5, Ish Sodhi 3-21) by 88 runs
KDSC members nominated Correspondent
KOHIMA, JUL 21 (NPN): Kohima district administration nominated 5 members from different sports bodies in the district to be part of a 7-member Kohima District Sports Council (KDSC) during a consultative meeting at DC’s office, here on Thursday. KDSC will be headed by deputy commissioner, Kohima, Shanavas C, while district sports officer (DSO) as member secretary and other members included presidents of Angami Sports Association (ASA), Kohima District Football Association (KDFA), representatives from Kohima District Badminton Association (KDBA), Sepaktakraw and Athletics bodies of the district. Shanavas informed that the list of nominated members would be forwarded to the District Planning and Development
Board (DPDB) meeting next month for approval. The DC told the house that the sports council would act as the uniting body for all sports associations in the district while the meeting was reportedly the first meeting for the constitution of the district’s sports council. Shanavas urged the sporting bodies to begin players’ registration process and make preparations for the upcoming Nagaland Olympics & Paralympic Games 2022 to be held next month. He hoped a good number of players would turn up from the state capital to participate in the Games. The meeting was attended by representatives from sports body and other disciplines including football, badminton, athletics, sepaktakraw, basketball, tennis, cricket etc. During the course of the interaction, representa-
tives raised concerns relating to their respective disciplines. The district’s basketball association raised its concerns over dismantling of the only existing Stateowned court at Khuochiezie (local ground) rendering the players helpless and without a place to practice. To which the DC suggested that a private basketball court be identified and subsequently the council would seek approval for utilization of the same till the developmental works at the local ground was completed. ASA recommended that there be a proper coordination between the sports bodies while selecting the district squad and choose athletes who had certificates in support of their performance. T h e m e e t i n g wa s chaired by the DC while seen in attendance was the ADC, SDO(C) and DSO.

Stanway stunner sends England past Spain into Euro semis Manchester United’s Fernandes
B R I G H TO N, J U L 2 0 (AGENCIES): England’s Georgia Stanway scored with a wonderful extra-time strike to earn them a 2-1 win over Spain on Wednesday in an excellent Euro 2022 quarter-final that sent the Lionesses into the last four. Hosts England were facing an exit from the tournament with six minutes of normal time remaining, but went on to earn a semifinal clash with Belgium or Sweden to the delight of the home crowd. It was a match which showcased the European women’s game at its best with both teams playing smart technical football at a high-tempo. But as the familiar chants of ‘Football’s Coming Home’ indicated, it was also a victory which will spark optimism that England, under the guid-

ance of Dutch coach Sarina Wiegman, can win their first major tournament. There was little to separate the teams in the early stages although England had a 37th-minute effort
from Ellen White ruled out for offside. However it was Spain who grabbed a 54thminute lead when taking advantage of some sloppy play from England as Athenea del Castillo did well down
the right flank and squared the ball to Esther Gonzalez, who recovered after a poor first touch to drill home. Del Castillo then went close to a second with a cross-shot which was clawed away by
England keeper Mary Earps at full-stretch. Spain were buzzing and playing with real confidence but six minutes from the end of normal time, the Lionesses found a way to keep the game alive when Alessia Russo headed Lauren Hemp’s cross into the path of substitute Ella Toone who poked home to take the game into extra time. The decisive moment came when Stanway found space in the Spanish half and pushed forward before unleashing a fierce shot from 20 metres out which flew past Sandra Panos. Spain, who have yet to win a knockout game in a major tournament, were devastated and left the field in tears but for the 28,994 crowd, the biggest for a Euro quarter-final, it was party time.

that you have, what you have to do; it’s also off the pitch. “Don’t be late for the meetings. Don’t be late for the meals. That’s really important, because if everyone is on time and
someone comes late, he should be punished. “That’s really good that he’s doing that (fining players for being late) and amazing, because I like to be on time, so I won’t have problems with that.”

Francisco Cerundolo
The 23-year-old, who defeated World No. 5 Casper Ruud in Sweden last week, will next face Aslan Karatsev in the quarterfinals after the

silver, while her compatriot Mekides Abebe took bronze. In the women’s discus final, Feng’s 69.12-metres opener, a personal best, was enough to secure her victory as Croatia’s Sandra Perkovic took silver and American Allman finished with
bronze. Reigning champion Yaime Perez ended in seventh place. Earlier on Wednesday, record-holder Sydney McLaughlin and fellow American Dalilah Muhammad set up a highly anticipated showdown in the
women’s 400 metres hurdles final, after winning their respective heats. American Champion Allison advanced to the men’s 400 metres final, as compatriot Michael Norman stormed to the fastest finish. World record-holder and twice world champion Wayde van Niekerk also sealed qualification. In the women’s 400 metres, double Olympic champion Shaunae Miller-Uibo cruised to victory in her semi-final, while Dominican Republic’s Marileidy Paulino, who won silver in Tokyo, also qualified for the finals. The United States’ relay hopes took a hit as 100
metres champion Fred Kerley pulled out of the 4x100 metres relay due to injury. South Africa’s Caster Semenya, who was competing in the women’s 5,000 metres heats after being barred from competing in any race from 400 metres to a mile, failed to qualify for the finals after clocking a time of 15:46.12. Semenya, a two-time Olympic champion at 800 metres, cannot compete in her preferred distance because of a World Athletics ruling saying women with high natural testosterone levels must take medication to reduce them to compete in middle-distance races.
