The militants were close by and got away, thanks to the confusion,” a senior officer in the Eastern Command said.

prevalence of extortion at various levels and institutions of society and how it was affecting the law and order. Tetseo stated that the police force equally relied on the public, adding that without the public, the police force could not win any case. Although the police receive numerous complaints on
extortion, theft, etc., he said that since there were no complainants, the cases were irrelevant or non-existent. In this regard, CP stressed on the importance of ‘community policing’ and role of public participation in aiding the police force in the fight against anti-social elements.
He, however, lamented that Nagaland lacked a common platform for all Nagas to sit together and discuss issues related to law and order. Stating that tribal organisations and bodies solely focused on their own communities, Tetseo stressed the need for a common platform for the greater good of all Nagas. Giving a detailed presentation on “Introduction on Community Policing”, Dr. Tiamenla Phom highlighted various legal provisions regarding community policing and discussed various sections under CrPC 1974, Police Act 1861. She was an epitome of sheer beauty, grace, wisdom, passion, strength and dignity. Our mother encompassed her every being with prayers when breath was in her. She was one living example that can be limned as an existence filled with zeal and gusto for life. She was a woman of unshakable conviction tenaciously embracing her entire self in the belief and service of the Lord. "All people die, but not all people live." Our dear mother lived. Yes, her life as a young mother was then hard and stressful as she juggled her time between family and Church. Yes, she certainly might have been embrangled by adversaries, cynicism and angst, as is the nature of life, but she did not deter nor back-pedaled from her faith in God. She did not wait for old age or ill-health to be God's servant but she did so while of robust health and still blossoming. A beautiful young mother and faithful servant of God, she served as Woman Pastress of Chimonger Baptist Lithro, Chimonger Village from 1966 to 1972, as Deaconess from 1984 to 1995 and 1997, as a member of Sangtam Baptist Lithro Kohima Prayer Group from 2009 to 2014. It was during those periods, as a young mother and Pastress that she used to attend her church service and visited homes for prayers with a child on her back, two children on each of her sides and three or more in tow behind her. God's blessings and approval was upon her as she became a mother to 11 children, 33 grand-children and 9 great grand-children. We believe deep down in our hearts that her work here on earth is done and so she did with prayerful candor. What could be more pensive and mournful than the death of a loved one? That cloudy misty morning as she breathed her last and the hospital room resounded with the wails and cries of her loved ones, the heavens sure must have been rejoicing with jubilation as they readied to welcome our mother. Our mortal eyes only saw a pale, lifeless body lying before us but to a spiritual eye it was visible that the angels were adorning her like a bride to be clad in white to be lifted to God's promised home where pain, suffering and tears have no names. A stalwart figure of our home gone for eternity from our midst, never to be seen or heard again, but our solace lies in the sweet promise that we shall surely and truly meet again. Through this medium, the family members of Lt. Mrs. Khumsingkhala Sangtam would like to express our profound heartfelt gratitude and thankfulness to all the churches, unions, societies, friends, neighbours, colleagues and even strangers for your presence, your generosity, your prayers, your kind words, your every contributions in cash and in kind. Jaded as these words may sound but they echo with genuinity and honest gratitude from our over-filled hearts. Our sole recompensation is to remember your every deeds in our prayers that God open His flood-gate of blessings and His favour be upon each and every one of you in the days to come. May you all be encouraged by God's words from the book of 2 Corinthians: 9-11:- "You will be enriched in every way so that you can be generous on every occasion and through us your generosity will result in thanksgiving to God." With a thankful heart, we remember you all. Our Lt. Mother's- Children, grand children, great grand-children, sons-in law, daughters-in-law, brothers and relatives k-1374/22 K Y M C

Pleas against Agnipath: Centre files caveat in SC
NEW DELHI, JUN 21 (PTI): The Centre has filed a caveat in the Supreme Court and urged that it be heard before the court passes any order on petitions against the Agnipath scheme. The Agnipath scheme, announced on June 14, provides for the recruitment of youths between the age bracket of 17.5 to 21 for four years with the provision to retain 25 per cent of them for 15 more years. Protests have erupted in several states against the scheme. Later, the government extended the upper age limit to 23 years for recruitment in 2022. Meanwhile, a fresh petition was filed in the apex court on Monday, seeking a direction to the Centre for reconsideration of the Agnipath scheme. The plea, filed by Harsh Ajay Singh who is

an advocate, has sought a direction for the constitution of a committee for providing inputs to the Department of Military Affairs, Ministry of Defence, and also to invite suggestions, including from retired Army officers, for amendments to the scheme for providing job opportunities to 75 per cent Agniveers, post retirement. “It is respectfully submitted that the petitioner is genuinely concerned about maintenance of law and order in the country and
for inviting the opinion of youths of the country whose future is at stake,” said the plea, filed through advocate Kumud Lata Das. It said the scheme is to be implemented from June 24 and the announcement of Agnipath scheme has caused nationwide protest in various states, including in Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Telangana and West Bengal, due to the short-term duration of four years coupled with “future uncertainties of the trained Agniveers”.
The petition alleged that this is a “half-baked reform” with multiple ramifications. “There are various shortcomings in this reform and with further discussion it would have been executed as a better reform,” it said. It claimed there is a great possibility of Agniveers trained under the scheme going astray and a four-year recruitment is insufficient to inculcate the values and ethos of the young brigade of Indian armed forces. The petitioner has also sought to stay implementation of the scheme. Two petitions were earlier filed in the apex court on the issue. One of the petitions has sought a direction to set up a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the damage to public properties, including that of the Railways, and violent protests against the Centre’s Agnipath scheme.
The plea has sought directions to the Centre and the Uttar Pradesh, Telangana, Bihar, Haryana and Rajasthan governments to submit a status report on the violent protests. It has also sought a direction to set up an expert committee under the chairmanship of a retired apex court judge to examine the scheme and its impact on national security and the Army. Another petition filed in the top court against the Centre’s Agnipath scheme has alleged that the government has quashed the century-old selection process for the Armed forces which is contrary to the constitutional provisions and without having parliamentary approval. The plea has sought to quash the June 14 notification/press note claiming it to be illegal and unconstitutional.
Oting killings: Army won’t hand... (From p-1) According to another officer, the NSCN (K-YA) is a banned outfit that is against the peace process in Nagaland. In fact, this outfit has been active in the neighbouring Arunachal Pradesh over the last few months, carrying out abductions and extortions. The Assam Rifles has been busy in Arunachal Pradesh, dealing with the NSCN (K-YA). The local population in that state are up in arms against this organisation. “The NSCN (K-YA) has cadres from Myanmar and Nagaland. The outfit is involved in drugs smuggling. Its leaders would love to see our SF personnel facing trial at a civil court. The region where the deaths occurred is close to the India-Myanmar border and villages on the Indian side have been known to shelter
cadres and provide safe passage to militants. The intelligence inputs ought to have been updated based on real-time movement. But that doesn’t mean that our soldiers were involved in murder,” he said. Speaking on condition of anonymity, a retired officer of Lieutenant General rank said how allowing a civil court to try the SF personnel would amount to “throwing them to the wolves”. This would affect the morale of the troops who would be reluctant to obey orders, he said. “However painful, such things happen during operations. Do remember that outfits like the NSCN (K-YA) kill innocents simply to scare others into providing them shelter and other support. Unfortunately, our governments are not so active about pressing charges against them. The SIT has no idea
of how things operate in the Army. Otherwise, why would all the personnel be charged with murder? A soldier follows the order of his officer. He is not to be blamed if an innocent is killed by his bullets,” the retired officer said. Another important point he made is on how quick the state governments are on accusing the Army of excesses. “The Army is not keen to get involved in such ‘firefighting’ operations. The states create a mess and then seek our support. We are not your fall guys. Let the states handle their own security is-sues,” he added. The Army has the option to try the personnel involved in the incident through court martial proceedings and it will resort to it. This will ensure a fair trial for the accused, based on the findings of the Court of Inquiry.

Congress leaders KC Venugopal, Imran Pratapgarhi, Yashpal Arya and others raise slogans during a protest. (PTI)
NEW DELHI, JUN 21 (PTI): The Congress on Tuesday staged a Satyagraha at the party headquarters here alleging “misuse” of the Enforcement Directorate and “harassment” of party leader Rahul Gandhi, who is being questioned by the probe agency for the fifth day in the National Herald money laundering case. The protesting leaders, including Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot and Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel, later announced a march to Jantar Mantar here, but the police prevented them for lack of permission. Several Congress workers and MPs were detained, including Benny Benhanan, Anto Anthony, Deepak Baij,
Saptagiri Ulaka, Gaurav Gogoi, Ranjeet Ranjan, Amee Yajnik, Santhokh Singh, K Suresh, Chella Kumar, Kuldeep Rai Sharma and Mohd Zawaid, besides former minister Bhakta Charan Das, Chhattisgarh minister Amarjeet Bhagat and ex-MP Kamal Kishore Commando. The police said the Congress leaders were given permission to stage protest at Jantar Mantar, but they were not allowed to take out a march. Baghel, along with supporters, sat on the road outside the Congress office, while Gehlot dubbed the BJP leaders “fascists” masquerading as believers of democracy to befool people. “They (BJP leaders) are fascists and have worn
the mask of democracy. They are trying to pit one community against the other and are breaking the social fabric,” Gehlot said, exhorting party workers to continue with their Satyagraha against the government’s “atrocities”. “The ED allowed Rahul Gandhi to leave their office around 12.45 am. We have seen for the first time that the ED is behaving like this with our national president which is condemnable. The democracy is in danger. ED, IT and CBI are being misused and the judiciary is under pressure,” the Rajasthan chief minister said. Congress spokesperson Abhishek Singhvi said, “The BJP is in a rage and has therefore put ED in a cage. This is the most blatant example of retribution of reprisal of revenge against the one man who stood for everything which is wrong with the BJP and that man’s name is Rahul Gandhi.” This is nothing but political reattributed vendetta, he alleged, adding that if the ED asks each question 10 times in different ways, even then this questioning process cannot take more than one day.

MYSURU, JUN 21 (PTI): Prime Minister Narendra Modi performed Yoga along with thousands of participants at a mass demonstration in the backdrop of the iconic Mysuru Palace here on Tuesday and said the physical fitness regime was forming a basis for cooperation among countries, and that it can become a problem-solver. Leading the main event of the International Day of Yoga (IDY) here, Modi said Yoga brings peace to our universe and gave the hope of a healthy life to humanity. “Yoga brings peace for us, the peace from Yoga is not only for individuals, Yoga brings peace to our society, nation, the world and the universe,” Modi said, quoting rishis, maharshis and acharyas.
Speaking after inaugurating the grand event at ‘Amba Vilas Palace’ here, he said, “this might feel like an extreme thought to someone, but our sages have answered this in a simple mantra- that this whole universe starts from our own body and soul. The universe starts from us and Yoga makes us conscious of everything within us and builds a sense of awareness.” Averring that things start with self-awareness and proceed to awareness of the world, he said, “when we become aware of ourselves and our world, we begin to spot the things that need to be changed both in ourselves and in the world. OPINION/EDITORIAL
Nagaland Post VOL. XXXII NO. 196 DIMAPUR, WEDNESDAY, JUNE 22, 2022
L
Oting and AFSPA
eaving aside what has been said so many times and in so many years about the controversial and draconian Armed Forces (Special) Powers Act 1958; the people of Nagaland and also those in other parts of the north east have been reminded that this law is for the outlaws. The shocking incident at Oting on December 4 evening when 13 innocent Konyaks were cold-bloodedly mowed down in two separate incidents by the army’s elite 21 Para Commandos is still a painful memory. Another died the next day in Mon when protestors who went on rampage against the security forces was shot dead by the Assam Rifles. The national outrage which echoed across the globe was more than what the government of India could afford to ignore. Even the statement of union home minister Amit Shah in parliament that truck carrying the victims did not stop when asked to by the 21 Para commando unit; confirmed that the defence establishment is unwilling to accept wrongdoing. The Oting incident, was a massacre of the innocents by a trigger happy elite commando unit. The officer of the unit, a Major in-charge of the 30 personnel on that black day, was responsible for the conduct of his men even if the operation was actually like a road frisking duty. The 21 Paras is not a greenhorn unit but a reputed commando battalion. After the Oting incident on December 4, 2021, the army should have placed the 21 Paras under watch. However even as the state police team launched investigation into the Oting incident and followed by a Court of Inquiry (CoI) by the army led by an officer in the rank of Major General; personnel of the 21 Paras again gunned down two Manipuri separatist rebels on January 13,2022 in what is believed to be a “low-intensity surgical strike” in Myanmar. The same 21 Paras was also involved in “Operation Hot Pursuit” in 2015 inside Myanmar. Indeed, the 21 Paras being in the thick of things is not a new phenomenon. Unfortunately, the desire for earning medals come at a high price where innocent civilians are often victims. There are many Otings in Nagaland as well as the north east but too few have been probed as the army brass is more inclined in protecting the morale of the personnel and less inclined in pursuing justice. The Oting incident also exposed how the uniformed personnel conduct counter-insurgency as well as surgical strikes. This is not to mean that all operations were criminal but the series of operations by the reputed 21 Paras need to be highlighted. The Nagaland Police has finally charge sheeted the 30 personnel including the unit commander a major for the crime. The Army’s CoI has also completed its probe. It now has to order a court martial but when, is the question. Meanwhile, the charge sheet prepared by the SIT means police has cleared the decks for taking the case to court and put the personnel of the 21 Paras under trial. The army now has to decide on what it will do with regard to bringing the guilty to book. The focus will be on the government’s stand over AFSPA, if the army maintains it was asked to tackle the situation under AFSPA and therefore, is insulated from civil courts.
DailyDevotion The Ministry of the Inner Life
You are…a royal priesthood…
—1 Peter 2:9
By what right have we become “a royal priesthood”? It is by the right of the atonement by the Cross of Christ that this has been accomplished. Are we prepared to purposely disregard ourselves and to launch out into the priestly work of prayer? The continual inner-searching we do in an effort to see if we are what we ought to be generates a self-centered, sickly type of Christianity, not the vigorous and simple life of a child of God. Until we get into this right and proper relationship with God, it is simply a case of our “hanging on by the skin of our teeth,” although we say, “What a wonderful victory I have!” Yet there is nothing at all in that which indicates the miracle of redemption. Launch out in reckless, unrestrained belief that the redemption is complete. Then don’t worry anymore about yourself, but begin to do as Jesus Christ has said, in essence, “Pray for the friend who comes to you at midnight, pray for the saints of God, and pray for all men.” Pray with the realization that you are perfect only in Christ Jesus, not on the basis of this argument: “Oh, Lord, I have done my best; please hear me now.” How long is it going to take God to free us from the unhealthy habit of thinking only about ourselves? We must get to the point of being sick to death of ourselves, until there is no longer any surprise at anything God might tell us about ourselves. We cannot reach and understand the depths of our own meagerness. There is only one place where we are right with God, and that is in Christ Jesus. Once we are there, we have to pour out our lives for all we are worth in this ministry of the inner life.

NAGALAND POST, DIMAPUR WEDNESDAY, JUNE 22, 2022
Post-mortem
Pan Naga Hoho (PNH) without integration not acceptable to Naga tribes
T
he brazen justification of the Pan Naga Hoho (PNH) admitting that it is at incubating stage and being concretized sounds most outrageous to the young and old alike in Nagaland. Conceiving abnormal political structure behind the back of Naga tribes is a crime. To envision a communist inspired Pan Naga Hoho (PNH) with a Dictator in the garb of a Chairman from among southern Nagas with the so-called Yehzabo, designed to make the same dictator order nationalization of private and tribal ancestral properties in Nagaland, is sheer madness. If this is not a glimpse of a determined plan for a backdoor entry into Nagaland in the near future, what else is? Would any Naga leader worth his salt, hide the post solution political or administrative blueprint from the Naga people for twenty-five
years? With every press release, there are clear tell-tale signs that Naga tribes have been taken for a ride, particularly of Nagaland state. For twenty-five years Mr. Th. Muivah and few of his trusted tribesmen have been demanding from GoI, a democratic nation, to allow them begin an authoritarian regime in Nagaland! In 1929, the Naga pioneers submitted a memorandum to British Statutory Commission as they clearly sensed and foresaw alien destructive political philosophy taking shape in Naga homeland. Today the communist-socialist inspired philosophy from within Nagas, in the form of obnoxious PNH powered by a despicable code called Yehzabo is being marketed in Nagaland. This political philosophy exists only in the imagination of few southern Naga IM leaders. It will have no buyers in Nagaland.
This idea originated from a mind or minds who do not understand the real meaning of a resistance movement. Nagas resisted the British imperialists and other occupational forces for intrusion into our land and threatening the social order. Today, in the guise of Naga cause, they paint the Naga future landscape with a democratic brush but their dictatorial ambition is visible. The jealousy and hatred against the defined customary and cultural practices with inherited liberty and freedom, in the present state of Nagaland, which they want to erase so much, is threatened. The despotic ideas and insidious policies hatched and brainstormed at Hebron Camp and also at 61, Lodhi Estate, New Delhi, by selected Manipur Nagas within the NSCN(IM), is slowly seeping out into the open space like an unbearable stench from a twenty-
five years old sewage tank! There are clear demarcated mountains, valleys and streams declaring indigenous domain for each Naga tribes be it in Nagaland or Naga areas in other states. Nagaland practices inherent robust democratic ethos in villages, prudent community structure and above all, strong physical, emotional and spiritual connection with the land and its resources. Southern Naga IM leaders have forgotten few basic natural laws of Nagaland in their PNH and Yehzabo plan which even GoI, during negotiations, honoured and acknowledged. 1. GoI has officially declared multiple times that the present boundary of Manipur state will not be disturbed which is why the GoI and WC, NNPGs negotiated and agreed, in principle, to give appropriate and adequate political space to Nagas of Manipur,
Arunachal Pradesh and Assam to practice, promote and strengthen Naga traditions, culture, custom and distinct identity in the divided Naga homeland, through honourable political and administrative arrangements without disturbing state boundaries. 2. There are certain inalienable rights of Naga tribes in Nagaland which the Southern Naga leaders within IM must stay away from. Nagaland or for that matter Naga areas in other states have their very own indigenous Naga tribe inhabiting particular area with full community ownership. No part of it can be ceded to another tribe or can be declared a common property of all Nagas now or in the future. The diversity among Nagas of different states, the ancestral lands and rights cannot be annulled and erased inside a small
room in Hebron camp or Delhi through PNH or Yehzabo. How dare southern Naga IM leaders talk of empowering a stranger to make new laws on life, death, limit ownership of land or properties, private or community? Even GoI do not dare intrude and infringe on inalienable elements because they know the thread that bind Indians and Nagas will be snapped. Similarly, the ties that bind Nagas of Nagaland and Nagas of Manipur will be snapped when propaganda on sentimentalism, philosophical narrative and romanticization of issue are applied to steamroll and subvert the extraordinary privacy of each Naga tribe, their possessions above and below their feet. History and identity whether between Indians and Nagas or among Nagas cannot be changed or challenged. Media Cell, WC, NNPGs
Why India should help Bangladesh solve Rohingya refugee crisis?
M
yanmar has been widely criticized for human rights crimes since the crackdown and forced displacement of Rohingya Muslims. Despite signing various agreement in 2017, 2018 respectively, Myanmar has remained hesitant to provide a suitable climate for the displaced Rohingya to return in a voluntary, safe, and dignified manner. Due to their narrowly defined geopolitical calculations, key regional powers such as China, Russia, and India are not interested in taking any action against Myanmar. On the Rohingya crisis, India has merely remained mainly silent. To its credit, India has helped Bangladesh financially while caring for over a million Rohingya refugees. But it’s a piece of good news that India urged the international community to increase financial and other aid to Bangladesh in order to help the country cope with the humanitarian crisis of hosting a million Rohingya refugees on June 14. India also requested that the international community aid Bangladesh in addressing issues such as radicalization in Rohingya refugee camps and other security concerns. Bangladesh has been seeking help from India and other countries in the region to repatriate Rohingya refugees to Myanmar from time to time. Ministers of Bangladesh seeks Indian help in this regard since the inception of the crisis. For more clarification, Bangladesh foreign minister has already raised the issue at various platforms such as the inaugural session of the two-day Asian Confluence River Conclave, Natural Allies in Development and Interdependence 3 (NADI-3), in Guwahati in 2022, three-day
trip to India to attend the IndiaBangladesh Joint Consultative Commission (JCC) very recently. Over one million Rohingya people left their homes in Myanmar to escape a harsh military campaign, and Bangladesh provided them asylum on humanitarian grounds. Armed attacks, bloodshed, and human rights violations drove thousands of Rohingya Muslims to escape Myanmar’s Rakhine province and seek refuge in Bangladesh in August 2017. The Rohingya people are a Muslim minority that have lived in predominately Buddhist Myanmar for generations but have been denied citizenship since 1982. According to the United Nations, Rohingyas are the world’s “most persecuted minority. In this regard, Bangladesh’s seeking assistance is valid and relevant. It is India in the region which is an influential country between South and Southeast Asia. Dhaka expects New Delhi to do more in response to Bangladesh’s request for assistance in the repatriation of Rohingya refugees to Myanmar. Bangladesh sought India’s assistance” because of India’s “excellent relationship” with Myanmar. As a friend of both Bangladesh and Myanmar, improvements can be made if India “pushes them a little bit” and “put[s] a little effort into it. Support from India in resolving the Rohingya situation can strengthen the bilateral ties more. It is said that Bangladesh is all-weather friend of India, Thus, India can prove that India is really all-weather friend of Bangladesh by standing with Bangladesh with its crisis moment. The Rohingya
situation must be resolved quickly because it threatens regional stability. Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh may gravitate to terrorism. For the past five years, they have been temporarily sheltered in Bangladesh, and they all wish to return to their homeland. We are afraid that such activities may create pockets of extremism and radicalism and may lead to uncertainty in the entire region, as a result, they must be repaired as soon as possible. The growing humanitarian crisis and incidences of violence can lead to an influx of thousands of people from Myanmar through Indian borders and any instability in Bangladesh, Myanmar, immediately impacts India. The humanitarian situation in Rohingya camps in Bangladesh and Myanmar is most severely affecting women and children. Therefore, India should place the utmost priority on the restoration of peace, security, and stability. Stability in Bangladesh’s CHT region and Cox’s bazar and Myanmar’s Rakhine, Chin state is very urgent for the stability for the Indian Northeastern region. It is well established that Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s “policy of zero-tolerance” for terrorism has brought “stability” and “development” to India especially Northeast India and all of South Asia. India must help Bangladesh PM in this regard. The whole regional stability may destabilize from the Rohingya refugee issue. Thus, a sustainable solution of Rohingya crisis is very urgent for India also. India is able to conduct bilateral and diplomatic negotiations with Myanmar. It enjoys positive bilateral ties with Myanmar. To resolve the situation, India might
cooperate with other states in the area. Indian businessmen are capable of participating to some level. Because fostering trade and investment in the area depends heavily on regional stability. Without a long-term solution to the Rohingya issue, India needs to understand what is at risk along Bangladesh-Myanmar-India border. India has been a dependable development partner ever since Bangladesh gained its independence in 1971. it was India and the people of India who gave the people of Bangladesh shelter and accommodation and also helped them in gaining independence, with a population of 170 million, Bangladesh is one of the fastestgrowing countries in the area and an important market for India. Since the Rohingya problem emerged in the area, India must keep in mind that it has the potential to directly undermine the strategic and economic goals of the QUAD countries, which value the rule of law, democracy, human rights, and freedom. In order to solve important regional concerns like the Rohingya crisis for peace and stability, India must join with and exert influence over other important parties in the region. It is a problem that affects the entire region. The entire region of South Asia and South East Asia could be volatile as a result of this issue. India bears some responsibilities as a South Asian country. India should understand how refugees can be a security threat for a country. Bangladesh has been dealing with the same issue. India might comprehend Bangladesh’s pains in this regard as a wellwisher friend. As a result, India
should take action in accordance with its capabilities. Both Myanmar and Bangladesh have excellent connections with India. Improving bilateral relations could help ASEAN and SAARC countries strengthen their commercial and investment relations. This will open up the possibility of serving broader regional interests. If political and diplomatic solutions to the strained ties between Bangladesh and Myanmar can be found, Himalayan-South Asian connectivity can be restored. Bangladesh usually backs India in every major international forum. It is now India’s turn to stand by Bangladesh in this time of distress. South Asia will not benefit from India’s quiet on the Rohingya catastrophe, which has reaped no rewards. Instead, this eerie silence will make an already dire situation worse. In accordance with its own peace and religious-centric society, India must abandon its policies and take a firm stand for justice and human rights on all international platforms on matters like the Rohingya crisis. Martin Luther King Jr. once said, “Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere,” and India needs to remember that. India must help Bangladesh solve Rohingya refugee crisis. Such a gesture will not go unnoticed in Dhaka. Such help will bolster the ties between the two neighbours. Rahul Gandhi’s ED saga may revitalise Congress, but the party’s fix list is long
I
t’s really hard to remember when was the last time the Congress party clogged the roads in central Delhi. Notwithstanding the recent past, the senior leaders – MPs, sitting chief ministers, and party workers, all hit the roads in the national capital since early this week. All the leaders rallied behind Rahul Gandhi as he faced the Enforcement Directorate (ED) questioning in the National Herald money laundering case. Several scuffles broke out between Congress leaders and police forces in the street. Many top leaders including Randeep Surjewala, KC Venugopal, P Chidambaram, Deepinder Singh Hooda, and others were detained – some were taken to nearby stations while some were transported to the outskirts. In the last few years, especially after the 2014 polls, this is undoubtedly one of the major mobilisations by the principal Opposition party. Not against the recent global turmoil over the Bhartiya Janata Party
(BJP) spokesperson’s controversial remark, not against bypassing due process and ‘Bulldozing’ of the homes of accused in Uttar Pradesh (UP) and elsewhere, but it was against the witch-hunt of its tallest leader – as claimed by the Congress. The party that has ruled India for most part of the 75 years since Independence, has been in its shell. However, the resurfacing of the charges has brought back the energy that it needs to revive itself if it channelises properly for a larger goal. What does the party need? The show of strength over Rahul Gandhi’s ED saga is one aspect of what the party needs to revive itself. It is essential for any political party to galvanise around perceived witchhunts of their leaders, but mass appeal comes with galvanising over issues that directly affect the masses. It chooses not to hit the streets when inflation is at all-time high, and the Rupee is at all-time low. The party chose to remain in a nut-
shell when the country saw periodical hikes in prices of petrol and diesel. The party’s strategy, if it is one, to remain silent on key issues has cost it a lot electorally and puts its future at stake. Failure as opposition The use of institutions by the ruling party is not very new and has been a part of both the BJP and the Indian National Congress (INC) regimes. With the existing government, the pattern of using ED the government around elections has been more evident in the last few years. During the recent Maharashtra and West Bengal elections, both Sharad Pawar and Abhishek Banerjee were called for questioning by the ED. Delhi’s health minister Satyendra Jain is among a few facing central agency in the recent past. Instead, the party focussed the movement around INC workers and Rahul Gandhi. The grand old party again missed the time to capitalise on the issue to regain its support base.
Agniveer protesters have mass appeal Veteran political scientist Suhas Palshikar in his latest piece talked about three platforms of protest mobilisation. One among them is mobilisation around citizens’ adversities. The recent spontaneous protest around the country against the Centre’s Agnipath scheme is marked by citizens’ adversities – more pervasive issues concerning masses. At least 16 Indian states witnessed violent protests against the scheme despite the fact that the protesters had no face or political force. Although both the INC protest and the Agnipath protest took place during the same period, their methods of mobilising were quite different. Contrary to the Congress, which has failed to mobilise both its cadre and public at large, one protest was motivated by personal sentiment and adversities of youths. For this reason, Congress protests have remained confined to the
party’s leaders and frontals and have never gained a wide following among the masses till date. The times ahead for INC Even after successively failing as opposition, being a national party, people disgruntled with the current regime largely believe that the Congress is the only hope that can fight against the BJP in 2024. But it needs transformational changes right from here to bring the house in order before 2024. Congress needs to fix its leadership crisis – it has been almost three years that the party is facing polls after polls without a permanent chairperson. Can the Congress follow the BJP way in terms of leadership – the saffron party after winning massive elections has set its duo, Modi and Shah, at the backend with JP Nadda at the forefront to lead. Will the Congress appoint a nonGandhi face as the party president while their top leaders – Sonia and Rahul Gandhi – remain in the
shadows? Or, will it adopt new methods and routes to induce new faces to generate mass appeal? Probably, the party must have answers to all these questions to take on BJP in 2024. Recently the par ty tried to fix its much-awaited communication problem by relieving Randeep Surjewala from his duty as communication head of the party after years of ‘service’. Surjewala has been replaced by former Union Minister Jairam Ramesh. How this change of duties will help building narratives would be an interesting trajectory to trace. It would be more interesting to see how the Congress and Gandhis can execute the mammoth revival plan from now onwards. 3rd attempt to pull down MVA in Maha: Pawar SAYS INTERNAL MATTER OF SHIV SENA, THACKERAY WILL HANDLE SITUATION
all have full confidence in the leadership of Thackeray,” he told reporters. “This is not an internal issue of the NCP. It is an internal issue of Shiv Sena, they (Sena) will inform us after assessing the situation,” he also said. P r e s s e d f u r t h e r, Pawar reiterated that it is the Sena’s internal issue and whatever that party decides, “we’ll be with them”. There is crisis Uddhav Thackeray-led gov-
‘Rebel’ Sena MLAs likely to be airlifted to Guwahati NEW DELHI, JUN 21 (AGENCIES): Maharashtra cabinet minister and Shiv Sena leader Eknath Shinde plunged the ruling Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) into a political crisis on Tuesday as he rebelled against his party and landed in a Surat’s Le Méridien hotel along with at least 21 MLAs, putting a huge question mark on the stability of the two-and-ahalf-years old government. The dramatic turn of events came hours after results of polls to the state legislative council on Monday night, which saw the Shiv Sena-led Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) losing one of the 6 seats it contested, to the opposition BJP which got all its five nominees elected to the Upper House, possibly on the back of cross-voting in its favour from the ruling
bloc besides support from Independents and MLAs from smaller parties. Meanwhile, Shinde and the rebel MLAs are likely to be airlifted to Guwahati from Gujarat’s Surat, both BJP-ruled states. Besides, the MLAs at CM Uddhav Thackeray’s official residence Varsha in Mumbai will be shifted to St. Regis Hotel in Worli. Shinde has reiterated his demand that his party should form an alliance with the BJP and walk out of the tripartite government. Speaking to his party chief and Maharashtra chief minister Uddhav Thackeray over the phone, Shinde said, “Don’t make me minister but join hands with BJP.” Earlier during the day, Shinde dropped sufficient hints that he has decided to part ways with Shiv Sena to chart start a new innings.
JeM terrorist among 4 killed in two encounters in Kashmir SRINAGAR, JUN 21 (PTI): A Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM) terrorist was among four ultras killed in two separate encounters with security forces in Pulwama and Baramulla districts of Jammu and Kashmir on Tuesday, police said. Security forces launched a cordon and search operation in Tulibal village in Baramulla’s Sopore area following information about the presence of terrorists there, a police spokesperson said. He said the search operation turned into an encounter after the terrorists opened fire at the security forces, who retaliated. Two unidentified militants were killed in the encounter, which was underway when reports last came in, he added. Two terrorists were killed in another encounter that broke out in Tujjan in south Kashmir’s Pulwama, the spokesperson said.
ana. But later, they came out of there and returned, forming the government. “After government formation, in the two-anda-half years, it was working fine. Yesterday, there was a (legislative council) election. As far as NCP is concerned...not even a single vote of NCP went elsewhere. “A candidate of our front could not win due to a shortfall in votes,” he said, adding that it was the duty of the other political party to ensure the victory of their candidate. Pawar added that cross-voting happens in such elections and there was nothing new in it. He also said the matter would be discussed as to why such a thing happened in the polls and what corrective action can be taken. Asked about Shinde’s reported demand that he
be made the chief minister, Pawar said,”only you have told me this. Whether he asked someone to make him Chief Minister, I don’t know. The understanding there among the three parties is that Sena has the responsibility of chief ministership. Deputy Chief Minister is with NCP.” Pawar said Thackeray has convened a meeting of his party and after that “we will talk to them”. Asked if he had spoken with Eknath Shinde, Pawar said, “I have not spoken to anyone. I also don’t know where they are staying.” Asserting that the NCP, the Congress and Shiv Sena are together, Pawar said it would not be correct to take any step till a guideline is received from the Sena on what the exact issue is and how to resolve it.
Declare LH memo null and void: LPO DIMAPUR, JUN 21 (NPN): Lotha public organization (LPO) has urged the state home department to declare “null and void” the Lothe Hoho (LH) memorandum, which dissolved Lotha Baptist Churches Association (LBCA) In a press release, LPO president Sulanthung Humtsoe and vice president Phyobemo Odyuo stated that LH memorandum invoking Article 371(1) (A) and 16 Point Agreement of the state of Nagaland was arbitrary and “cannot stand the test of the law”. LPO stated that the apex tribal hoho was a statutory body as per the Nagaland village and Tribal council Act, 1978 (fourth Amendment) 2009, section 23-27. However, LOP said the Act did not empower the tribal Hohos to overrule the religious institutions or any organization. Further, LPO stated that since from the inception of LH, there had been “no peaceful atmosphere” in the Lotha community as the organization was formed without proper guidelines. On the imbroglio of LBCA, the LPO alleged that LH led by Er. Mhondamo Ovung and Abenthung Ngullie have lost all moral rights to lead the Lotha people. LPO, therefore, demanded that the duo step down immediately and pave the way for the new leadership, who can lead the Lotha community “with a clear vision and God’s wisdom”. LPO also appealed to the Baptist Church members to reconcile and come together to maintain the sanctity of the LBCA. Meanwhile, LPO stated that state government, after going through the “documents of the
ongoing spar between the members of Lotha Baptist Churches”, have wisely given its direction to the church members to maintain status quo as on March 18, 2022 (before formation of interim body) till the outcome of the litigation, which was lying pending in Gauhati High Court Kohima bench. It said the records showed that the present dispute over the authority of LBCA started after the Lotha Hoho, without any authority, selected an interim body of LBCA on March 18, 2022 in spite of the fact that there was existing body, which was legally constituted and a disputed case was pending disposal in the Gauhati High Court, Kohima bench. LPO pointed out that the Court by order dated February 3, 2022 gave a direction to the Nagaland Baptist Churches Council (NBCC) to sort out the dispute. It said that the court had, at no point in time, given any authority to the LH to meddle in the LBCA imbroglio. In spite of the government directive to maintain status quo, LPO said the interim body was attempting to proceed with their activities defying the government directions June 10, 2022. On the other hand, LPO said the Lotha Hoho was claiming that they have not interfered in the government directives. In this regard, LPO reminded the Lotha Hoho that “ignorance is not an excuse”. It said that the present dispute was to displace the officially elected LBCA by an interim body installed by the Lotha Hoho. Therefore, LPO said Lotha Hoho was solely responsible for the present dispute of LBCA.
NEW DELHI, JUN 21 (AGENCIES): Congress leader Rahul Gandhi left the Enforcement Directorate office in Delhi after 12 hours of questioning in a money laundering case on Tuesday. The Wayanad MP has so far been questioned for nearly 50 plus hours in five days. He was questioned for 10 hours yesterday too, and for 30 hours last week from Monday to Wednesday. Before the ED probe resumed yesterday, he was allowed some days’ break to be with his ailing mother, Congress President Sonia Gandhi. Sonia Gandhi, who was discharged on Monday after treatment of post-Covid complications, has also been summoned by the ED but given time till June 23. The ED is investigating the Gandhis’ role in what is known as the National Herald case.

She also highlighted on the common misconceptions and challenges of community policing. Technical session was moderated by Adv. Tiakaba. Earlier, DAYO advisor, Imtiakum, in a short address, stated that sensing the necessity of helping the traditional police force and to protect people from anti-social elements, DAYO had established a helpline. He stated that community policing was already in action with DAYO. On the occasion, DAYO felicitated CP Dimapur, Rothihu Tetseo, on being awarded the President’s Police Medal for Distinguished Service. and ordered the drivers to get down at gunpoint and after the drivers fled, the truck was set fire. Mentioning that an FIR was filed on June 2 against Peren CSOs regarding the arson, they demanded that the culprits responsible for the arson should be booked and arrested within a week. Recalling how following the sudden announcement of ban on movement of unprocessed timber from Peren district by CSOs in 2021 they had made their stand clear and unequivocal, the three bodies insisted that in the event of the CSOs not giving sufficient time to timber traders who had invested a huge amount of money, labour and machinery to wind up their operations, then the latter should pay back all the money invested by the traders. They also claimed that it was only the villagers and individual landowners
trees. And since the land and resources belonged to the people or villagers as per Art 371 (A), they clarified that the traders agreed to buy the areas and trees. Recalling that parties had entered into agreements or transactions earlier verbally in good faith as per Naga customary law, which was binding on both the parties, they claimed that no written documents were needed to seal a deal or agreement. But in the present issue, they lamented that even after written agreements that could be validated in any court of law, the CSOs were determined to break the code of honour. They said they had so far refrained from taking any action in the hope that both parties would wait for a government decision. But since the CSOs were bent upon imposing their own will, they clarified that they were compelled to give a counter along with their units.
International Day of Yoga observed in Nagaland (From p-1) Asserting that Yoga eventually connects people, and meditation will bring peace to mind, the Union Minister said “when we have peace in mind, we are mentally fit and as our mindset changes, corruption and crime will also decrease.” Kishore urged all to come together and “include Yoga as part of our life.” State health and family welfare (H&FW) minister, S Pangnyu Phom, in his speech, stressed on the importance of yoga and the role it plays in day-to-day lives. He encouraged the gathering to perform yoga both for mental and physical balance. Further, Phom said
yoga could also increase the body’s immunity against all kinds of diseases. Advisor for urban development and municipal affairs, Dr. Neikiesalie (Nicky) Kire also presented short speech and invocation pronounced by KBC senior pastor, Rev Mekhale. The programme event was organized by health and family welfare in association with CPWD under Ministry of MOHUA, New Delhi. The Yoga Day celebration was live streamed at the event where Prime Minister Modi addressed the participants from Karnataka’s Mysuru. The programme concluded with Yoga pledge taking ceremony.

ernment in Maharashtra appears to be in crisis after Shiv Sena minister Eknath Shinde and some MLAs of his party went incommunicado and camped in Surat, a day after suspected cross-voting in MLC polls. As Shinde is yet to spell out his stand, Maharashtra BJP chief Chandrakant Patil ruled out any link of his party to the ongoing political developments but also said the BJP would “definitely consider” a proposal if it comes from Shinde to form a government. Addressing reporters here, Pawar said, “What happened in Maharashtra, in the past two and twoand-a-half years, this is the third incident. NEW DELHI, JUN 21 (PTI): With the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government in Maharashtra in crisis, NCP chief Sharad Pawar on Tuesday alleged that a third attempt was being made to pull it down but expressed confidence that Chief Minister Udhhav Thackeray will be able to handle the “internal issue” of the Shiv Sena. Pawar, who played a crucial role in the formation of the MVA government, said it will complete its full five-year term and ruled out going with the BJP, in case the state government falls. He said he would be leaving for Mumbai soon after the opposition meeting on the joint presidential candidate and would be meeting Thackeray later in the day. “There are no differences in the alliance and

Suggesting that an ultimatum should be adopted to push for early Naga solution, former ENPO president Kekongchim said from now on there should be ultimatums associated with resolutions as it was years since Nagas had been talking about an early solution. Instead of holding closed-door meetings and adopting resolutions, he called for public referendum where voices of every individual and organisation was heard. He remarked that if the Naga political groups were not transparent about the political negotia-tions,

and Spearhead-class expeditionary fast transport USNS Choctaw County found themselves in the close encounter with three Iranian fast boats while coming through the Strait of Hormuz to enter the Persian Gulf, the Navy said. In a video released by the Navy’s Bahrain-based 5th Fleet, a high-speed Guard Boghammar is seen turning head-on toward the Sirocco. The Sirocco repeatedly blows its horn at the Boghammar, which turns away as it closes in. The flare shot can be heard, but not seen, as the Boghammar passes the Sirocco with the Iranian flag flying above it. The Navy said the Boghammar came within 50 yards (45 metres) of the Sirocco, raising the risk of the vessels running into each other. The overall encounter lasted about an hour, the Navy said.

STOCKHOLM, JUN 21 (AP): At least two people were wounded — one with life-threatening injuries — in a stabbing attack in the parking area of a shopping mall west of the Swedish capital, police said Tuesday. A suspect has been arrested. Police said that “some kind of sharp object” had been used in the attack, and that the case was being investigated as a murder attempt. The victim with lifethreatening injuries was immediately operated on, while the other victim was in a serious but stable condition, hospital officials said. Both victims are middleaged men. Police spokesman Magnus Jansson Klarin told Swedish newspaper Aftonbladet that they no idea what is behind the attack and that there was only one perpetrator.
KYIV, JUN 21 (AP): Russian attacks laid down a curtain of fire Tuesday across areas of eastern Ukraine where pockets of resistance are denying Moscow full military control of the region, almost four months after the Kremlin unleashed an invasion. “Today ever ything that can burn is on fire,” Serhiy Haidai, the governor of Ukraine’s eastern Luhansk region, told The Associated Press. Ru s s i a ’s wa r h a s caused alarm over food supplies from Ukraine to the rest of the world and gas supplies from Russia, as well as raising questions about security in Western Europe. The Russian military currently controls about 95% of the Luhansk region. But Moscow has struggled for weeks to overrun it completely, despite deploying additional troops and possessing a massive advantage in military assets. In the city of Sievierodonetsk, the hot spot of the fighting, Ukrainian defenders held on to the Azot chemical plant in the industrial outskirts. About 500 civilians are sheltering at the plant, and Haidai said the Russian forces are turning the area “into ruins”.
“It is a sheer catastrophe,” Haidai told the AP in written comments about the plant. “Our positions are being fired at from howitzers, multiple rocket launchers, large-caliber artillery, missile strikes.” The defence of the chemical plant recalled the besieged Azovstal steel mill in the brutalised city of Mariupol, where Ukrainian troops were pinned down for weeks. The neighbouring Lysychansk, the only city in the Luhansk region that is still fully under Ukrainian control, is also the target of multiple airstrikes. The Ukraine president’s office said Tuesday that at least six civilians had been killed over the previous 24 hours, and 16

DUBAI, JUN 21 (AP): A US Navy warship fired a warning flare to wave off an Iranian Revolutionary Guard speedboat coming straight at it during a tense encounter in the strategic Strait of Hormuz, officials said Tuesday. The incident on Monday involving the Guard and the Navy comes as tensions remain high over stalled negotiations over Iran’s tattered nuclear deal with world powers and as Tehran enriches uranium closer than ever to weapons-grade levels under decreasing international oversight. Meanwhile, the United Nations’ nuclear watchdog said Iran now plans to enrich uranium through a second set of advanced centrifuges at its underground Fordo facility amid the standoff. Explosions also occurred on Tuesday morning in the southern city of Mykolaiv. Airstrikes on Sievierodonetsk and nearby Lysychansk have ruined more than 10 residential buildings and a police station. In the city of Avdiivka in the Donetsk region, a
school burned down as the result of the shelling, the president’s office said. International support for Ukraine’s plight was demonstrated once more when a Nobel Peace Prize medal auctioned off by Russian journalist Dmitry Muratov sold Monday night for $103.5 million, shattering the old record for a Nobel. The auction aimed to raise money for Ukrainian child refugees. Meanwhile, Russian authorities blocked the website of British newspaper The Telegraph over an article it published, the internet rights group Roskomsvoboda reported Tuesday. The group said in an online statement that Russia’s media and internet regulator, Roskomnadzor, blocked Russian access to a story Moscow described as “fake news”. The move made the entire Telegraph website inaccessible for some Russians. The Telegraph story alleged that Russian forces had prepared a mobile crematorium for use in its war with Ukraine, possibly to hide its military casualties.

opular K-pop band BTS’ new compilation album ‘Proof ’ has granted the powerhouse their sixth No. 1 album to debut atop the Billboard 200 chart, despite their upcoming break. According to ‘Variety’, four days before ‘Proof ’ dropped, the group announced they would be taking a break to focus on their solo careers. That news had little impact on the Army, however, as ‘Proof ’ opened at No. 1 on the album chart (dated June 25), with the equivalent of 314,000 sales in the US, according to Billboard via Luminate. A large part of that unit figure was motivated by CD album sales, which included an extra 13 tracks as opposed to the digital download and streaming album. The album, released June 10, is a three-disc compilation with a large majority of its contents being previously released material. ‘Proof ’ also features three allnew tracks, including ‘Yet to Come (The Most Beautiful Moment)’, which entered at No.1 on the Billboard’s Global-Excluding-US chart, extending BTS’ own record for a 17th week top Billboard’s GlobalExcluding-US chart. On the same chart, Harry Styles’ ‘As It Was’ bounced back for a 10th
week at No. 1, while Joji’s ‘Glimpse of Us’ and Bad Bunny’s ‘Efecto’ made their debut in the tier. According to ‘Variety’, Bad Bunny’s ‘Un Verano Sin Ti’ slipped to a No. 2 spot on the new Billboard 200 with 129,000 equivalent album units earned while Styles’ ‘Harry’s House’ remains stagnant on the Billboard 200 at No. 3 with 91,000 equivalent album units. SZA’s ‘Ctrl’ jumped from No. 35 to No. 9 on the 200 chart, following the album’s fifth-anniversary deluxe reissue (released June 10) which added seven previously unreleased songs to the 14-track album. Post Malone’s ‘Twelve Carat Toothache’ falls 2-4 in its second week. Morgan Wallen’s ‘Dangerous:
The Double Album’ is still at No. 6, Kendrick Lamar’s ‘Mr. Morale & The Big Steppers’ slides 5-7 and Olivia Rodrigo’s aSour’ remains at No. 8. Carrie Underwood also earned her 10th consecutive top 10 album on the Billboard 200 with her new studio release ‘Denim & Rhinestones’” It closes the Billboard 200 chart at No. 10 with 31,000 equivalent album units earned. Jack Harlow’s ‘First Class’ remains in the No. 2 spot on the chart, after three non-consecutive weeks at No. 1 while Future’s ‘Wait For U’, featuring Drake and Tems, is steady at No. 3. Lizzo’s ‘About Damn Time’ bumps 5-4 and Kate Bush’s ‘Running Up That Hill (A Deal With God)’ slips to No. 5 on the Hot 100.(IANS)

Yo u D o n’ t S l e e p Enough If you don’t get your ZZZs, your skin can start to wrinkle and sag early. That’s in part because your body releases more cortisol, a “stress hormone” that breaks down the collagen that keeps your skin smooth and springy. Try to set up a quiet, soothing bedtime ritual with regular hours, and avoid alcohol, caffeine, and electronics before bed. You’re a Smoker If you use tobacco, besides raising your chances of getting cancer, you could end up with wrinkled, sagging skin at a younger age. Smoking lessens blood flow that carries essential nutrients like oxygen to the surface of your skin and may slow your body’s production of collagen. Talk to your doctor about ways to break the habit. You’re in the Sun Too Much Some sunlight is good for you, but soaking up too many UV rays damages collagen in your skin and may cause your body to make too much of a protein called elastin. You might notice your skin start to thicken and develop a rough feel with deep wrinkles and varied color (age spots). If you must be in direct sun, cover up with hats, long sleeves, and sunglasses. Use a “broad spectrum” sunscreen that’s got a rating of SPF 30 or higher. You Don’t Moisturize Your Skin If your skin dries out, it can give you the rough and scaly look of an older person. Wash your skin once or twice a day. Try to be fairly gentle because hard scrubbing can irritate it. Use a mild cleanser without alcohol or other ingredients that could inflame, roughen, or dry out your skin. Moisturize with cream twice a day to help seal in moisture that keeps you looking young. Indian women’s football team (AIFF)
NEW DELHI, JUN 21 (IANS): Indian women’s team head coach Suren Chettri believes that the national side will be brave when they face Sweden U23 on Wednesday, in the WU23 3-Nations tournament, in their intent to grow as a footballing nation. “We aim to put up a good show. Sweden are number 2 in FIFA world ranking and to play against them will be difficult - that too in Sweden. But it will be important as to how we approach the game. We need to have faith and courage to face a team like this. We want to grow as a footballing nation,” the coach asserted prior to the first match in the 3-nation tournament. Suren had coached the
Indian Arrows women’s team in the last edition of Hero Indian Women’s League, and also the junior women teams before he joined as an interim head coach for this exposure tour. “It is a different approach to deal with the senior girls. Here we focus on results, while at the junior level, we focus on the development process.” “There are many girls who have represented the country several times, and some are new with a good attitude. The national team is a process -- the new players have shown that they are good, and that’s why they are here. The most important thing is how they will approach the training sessions, and the game ahead,” he added.

It will be a new playing style against them, and we are all excited to play under our new coach,” Grace quipped. “These exposure tour matches help us in improving our games, as well as to keep us mentally prepared for the new challenges we are going to face as individuals and as a team,” she added.
UDINE (ITALY), JUN 21 (PTI): The Indian women’s football team will begin its preparation for the upcoming FIFA U-17 World Cup by taking on Italy in a fournation tournament at the Gradisca d’lsonzo Stadium near here on Wednesday. Coach Dennerby said Italy would be a tough nut to crack but his priority is not the result but the overall progress of the team. “We are playing Italy, and it is bound to be a tough game. The only expectation is to have a good performance. I am not thinking about the result, I want to see how the team develops,” Dennerby said ahead of India’s opening match. After their stint in Italy, the Young Tigresses will travel to Norway for the Open Nordic Tournament WU16 from July 1-7.
Struggling Rani misses out on berth in WC squad
NEW DELHI, JUN 21 (PTI): Talismanic striker and former skipper Rani Rampal, who is yet to regain full fitness, did not find a place in the Indian team for the next month’s FIH World Cup as Hockey India announced an 18-member squad on Tuesday. Rani, who led the Indian women to the historic fourth-place finish at the Tokyo Olympics, was picked for the recent FIH Pro League matches in Belgium and Netherlands after recovering from a hamstring injury. She didn’t feature in the first four games of the side’s European leg of Pro League, raising doubts about her full fitness. Eventually it cost her a place in the World Cup-bound squad. Besides Rani’s exclusion, there are no further surprises as India went for a tried and tested squad, which has been playing together for a long time.
GP Badminton League rescheduled BENGALURU, JUN 21 (IANS): The inaugural edition of the Grand Prix Badminton League (GPBL), which was set to be held from July 1-10, has been rescheduled in the wake of the international badminton calendar and other national tournaments, the organisers said on Tuesday. GPBL, which is played under the aegis of the Karnataka Badminton Association and has eight teams in the fray, will now be held from August 12 to 21. “The league was originally scheduled to be conducted from July 1-10. But in the wake of the international badminton calendar, and the India junior National ranking tournament in Panchkula, which might have hampered the ranking points of some of the participating players, the start date has been moved to August,” the organiser said in a release. The teams in the fray include Bengaluru Lions, Mangalore Sharks, Mandya Bulls, Mysore Panthers, Malnad Falcons, Bandipur Tuskers, KGF
Wolves and Kodagu Tigers and are mentored by the c’untry’s top stars including P.V. Sindhu, Kidambi Srikanth, Sai Praneeth, Jwala Gutta, Ashwini Ponnappa, Chirag Shetty, Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and HS Prannoy. A total of Rs 60 lakh will be on offer as prize money with the winners taking away a bounty of Rs 24 lakh.“Keeping in mind the best interests of the players who stand to gain ranking points, we have moved the GPBL to August when there is no clash of major badminton tournaments,” said Prashanth Reddy, CEO Bitsport and League Com-
missioner, GPBL. “This period will also give the organising committee and the franchises some more time to strengthen their position both financially and prepare the teams physically,” he added. Elaborating on the decision, Arvind Bhat, Copromoter of GPBL and League Director said: “Owing to the International badminton calendar, GPBL which was to be telecast live would have possibly eaten into the telecast time of GPBL. We want all the parties concerned to get their due benefits. Hence it was inevitable but to reschedule the event by a month or so.”

Georgia switch was for Olympics: Dzalamidze L O N D O N, J U N 2 1 (REUTERS): Russianborn tennis player Natela Dzalamidze said her decision to change nationality to Georgian was motivated by her desire to play at the Olympics and that being able to compete at Wimbledon was a bonus. In April, the All England Lawn Tennis Club (AELTC) banned Russian and Belarusian players from competing at Wimbledon due to the invasion of Ukraine, which Moscow calls a “special military operation”. Belarus has been a key staging area for the invasion. Dzalamidze’s nationality is Georgian in Wimbledon’s entry list, allowing her to partner Serbian Aleksandra Krunic in the women’s doubles at the Grand Slam. The WTA Tour said in a statement Dzalamidze

had complied with the regulations for changing nationality. “In Natela’s case, she submitted a Georgian passport and ID as she has dual citizenship, and, as a result, her nationality has been officially changed within the
WTA system,” it said. “This took place prior to the finalisation and release of the Wimbledon entry lists.” Dzalamidze, whose father is Georgian, said the depth of Russian tennis and the country’s suspen-
sion from the Billie Jean King Cup, which players have to compete in to fulfil ITF participation requirements for the Olympics, led to the switch. “My decision was made because I am focusing on my career and would like to have the chance to compete at the Olympic Games,” the 29-year-old told the Times. “The first discussion I had with the WTA was during Indian Wells at the beginning of March. “If I made the decision to play for Georgia and have a chance to play Wimbledon, why not? At the moment I have my best ranking and my perspective is now much better in Georgia.” Wimbledon, which begins on June 27, has been stripped of its ranking points by the ATP and WTA Tours over its decision to exclude players from Russia and Belarus.

to return Incredible to see so many FIFA, World Athletics review transgender rule after FINA ruling Vijender to pro boxing ring
BUDAPEST, JUN 21 (AGENCIES): FIFA and World Athletics are set to review their eligibility policies following the International Swimming Federation’s (FINA) landmark decision here to severely restrict the participation of transgender athletes in women’s events. FINA’s decision has already sparked change at Global Association of International Sports Federations observer member International Rugby League (IRL), which has banned transgender players from women’s competitions until further notice. Football’s global governing body FIFA has confirmed that a review is being conducted on the participation of transgender players. “FIFA is currently reviewing its gender
eligibility regulations in consultation with expert stakeholders,” a spokesperson told Reuters. “Due to the ongoing nature of the process, FIFA is not in a position to comment on specifics of proposed amendments to the existing regulations.” The spokesperson added: “Should FIFA be asked to verify the eligibility of a player before the new regulations will be in place, any such case will be dealt with on a caseby-case basis, taking into account FIFA’s clear commitment to respect human rights.” FIFA added that it is taking guidance from medical, legal, scientific, performance and human rights experts, and taking into account the position of the International Olympic
Committee (IOC). One of women’s football’s biggest stars, Megan Rapinoe, a London 2012 Olympic gold medallist and back-to-back FIFA Women’s World Cup winner with the United States, has told Time magazine that she believes banning transgender women from competing in elite sports is “cruel” and “disgusting” following FINA’s decision. On the other side of the debate, World Athletics’ President Sebastian Coe told The Times in March that be believes “the integrity of women’s sport if we don’t get this right, and actually the future of women’s sport, is very fragile”, following the success of American transgender swimmer Lia Thomas. Thomas became the first openly transgender
athlete to win a National Collegiate Athletic Association Division I title when she triumphed in the women’s 500 yards freestyle representing the University of Pennsylvania. Heated disagreements following her victory provided the backdrop for FINA’s decision at its Extraordinary Congress here on Sunday (June 19). Reacting to FINA’s move, Coe told the BBC that he welcomed the development, and said that World Athletics would review its policies by the end of the year. “We see an international federation asserting its primacy in setting rules, regulations and policies that are in the best interest of its sport,” the two-time Olympic gold medallist said.
“This is as it should be. “We have always believed that biology trumps gender and we will continue to review our regulations in line with this. “We will follow the science. “We continue to study, research and contribute to the growing body of evidence that testosterone is a key determinant in performance, and have scheduled a discussion on our regulations with our council at the end of the year.” Coe added: “When push comes to shove, if it’s a judgement between inclusion and fairness, we will always fall down on the side of fairness - that for me is non-negotiable.” World Athletics rules capping athletes’ testosterone levels at five nanomoles per litre in some women’s running events came into force in 2019. The requirements controversially led to Namibia’s Christine Mboma and Beatrice Masilingi being forced to miss the women’s 400 metres at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, after an assessment found that the pair have differences in sexual development and high natural levels of testosterone.

Vijender Singh’s opponent for the bout is yet to be finalised. The event named ‘Rumble In The Jungle’, is going to be only his sixth bout in India. Vijender, 36, who is currently training in Manchester, said, “I am extremely thankful to the Chhattisgarh government, especially Hon’ble Chief Minister, Bhupesh Baghel Ji for granting their consent to hold my next professional bout. It’s a great opportunity to introduce the sport to the people of the state. Hopefully, this can inspire a new generation of boxers. I look forward to starting my unbeaten streak again.” Vijender turned professional in 2015 and since then has a record of 12-1 with eight knockouts.
pace bowlers in India: Dravid
Rahul Dravid
MUMBAI, JUN 21 (IANS): India cricket team chief coach Rahul Dravid and former pace bowler Irfan Pathan feel these are exciting times for Indian cricket, given the number of young fast bowlers emerging on the scene, and hoped that a couple of them might go on to play in the upcoming ICC T20 World Cup in Australia later this year. Among the notable pace bowlers to emerge following the conclusion of the IPL 2022 include Umran Malik, who had a 157kmph delivery for Sunrisers Hyderabad, while Arshdeep Singh, Prasidh Krishna and Kuldeep Sen, among others, too have shown tremendous promise. Dravid, opening up about his coaching tenure so far with the India team and working with an array of captains and pace bowlers in a short span of time, said, “It (coaching) has been quite exciting, it has been good
fun, I must say. “It’s been challenging as well, we have got six captains in the last eight months, which actually wasn’t the plan when I started, but it’s the nature of the number of games we are playing, it’s the nature of Covid, so I have had to work with quite a few people, it has been great fun. A lot of other guys have got an opportunity to lead, we have got opportunities to create more leaders in the group,” Dravid told Star Sports. Dravid credited the IPL for nurturing several young bowlers to play for Indian in the years to come. A lot of youngsters got an opportunity to showcase their skills, and a lot of them came good, those are really good signs for Indian cricket, exciting times ahead,” Dravid added. Former Indian pace bowler Pathan backed Malik to get a place in the ICC T20 World Cup squad. “He (Umran) has not yet played (for India); he has still not made his debut. First make him debut; see how he goes when he makes his debut. But if he makes his debut and god forbid if it does not go well, don’t leave him aside,” Irfan told Star Sports.
