The CCoNPI comprises of all elected members of Nagaland formed with the objective of bringing two Naga negotiating groups together for one agreement, one solution. While NNPGs signed the Agreed Position with the government of India in 2017, the NSCN(I-M) signed the Framework Agreement with the GoI in 2015. After the meeting on Wednesday , the NSCN (IM) delegation besides CCoNPI convener Neiphiu Rio and co-convener Y. Patton also left the venue separately

without meeting the media. CCoNPI co-convenor and leader of opposition, TR Zeliang, who briefed the media, described the meeting as “smooth sailing” and said that both parties understood each other’s intentions. Zeliang said that the committee expected both the Naga negotiating groups (NNPGs and NSCN-IM) to sit across table along with the facilitators (60 elected members) to arrive at a consensus for solution. Zeliang also disclosed that CCoNPI requested the NSCN (I-M) leadership to

resume talks with the Government of India. He said CCoNPI as “facilitator” will pursue the matter with the government of India on behalf of NSCN (I-M) for a meeting ground. On state political issue, when asked about NPF’s decision to join the ruling PDA government, Zeliang reiterated that NPF had agreed to the “concept of opposition-less government because of the Naga political issue”. He claimed that even though the opposition and ruling agree on issues in the assembly, there were dif-

KOHIMA, JUL 21 (NPN): Against the backdrop of Union agriculture minister Narendra Singh Tomar’s recent remark in Parliament on recovery of Rs 45,08,000 transferred to 524 ineligible framers from Nagaland under PM Kisan scheme, agriculture production commissioner (APC) Kikheto Sema said the agriculture department was on the job to identify if there were more ineligible farmers who had availed the scheme. Speaking to Nagaland Post, Kikheto said that the department had been reiterating time and again that only genuine farmers should avail the scheme but regretted that many ineligible farmers too availed the scheme. He said the ineligible DIMAPUR, JUL 21 (NPN): farmers who received the Nagaland’s cumulative Cov- amount under the scheme id caseload neared the 27000 mark after 105 fresh Covid-19 positive cases were reported on Wednesday while three more patients succumbed D I M A P U R , J U L 2 1 to the infection. had to refund the amount since it was directly transferred into their bank accounts. Besides recovering the amount, Kikheto said the State government would also initiate action against defaulters, if deemed fit. He informed that during a survey, it was found that some of the reasons why the beneficiaries were found ineligible were migration to towns and urban areas for jobs after availing the scheme, deaths, working in government sector, etc, while there were also some farmers who did not wish to avail benefit under PM Kisan. Kikheto remarked that the department launched “ineligibility campaign” in all districts on the directive of Central and state governments, adding that this would continue to ensure that genuine farmers were

not left out from the scheme. In response to a question in Parliament, the Union minister had on July 15 admitted the discrepancies and claimed that the ministry was in the process of recovering Rs 2,992.75 crore that was transferred to 42.16 lakh ineligible farmers under the PM-Kisan scheme across the country, including 524 ineligible farmers from Nagaland. According to the data shared by Tomar, Rs 2,992 crore received by 42.16 lakh ineligible farmers under PM-Kisan scheme as on July 15, 2021 would have to be recovered. With Rs 554.01 crore availed by 8.35 lakh ineligible farmers, Assam has the highest number of ineligible farmers availing benefits under the scheme followed by Punjab, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu and Uttar Pradesh.

Therefore, he said that if both were together in the government, there was a way by which the government of India would listen to them( all-party government) for a common approach. He said it was with that perception that NPF had agreed to the concept of opposition-less government. The Legislature party spokesperson Imkong L Imchen also asserted that the objective of NPF joining PDA alliance was “for active facilitation”. He said that NPF was there to facilitate the different factions so that a common Naga agenda could be found and be presented to the government of India. Asked whether all NPF legislators were aware of the decision, he said only 18 legislators ( out 25) were present at the meeting . He said the seven did not attend for “reasons best known (Cont’d on p-8) them.”

Pegasus spyware: NSCN leaders on list of potential target, says report NEW DELHI, JUL 21 (AGENCIES): Phone numbers of top leaders of the NSCN (I-M) were added to a list of numbers of persons of interest believed to be generated by an Indian client of Israeli spyware Pegasus, The Wire reported on Wednesday. The names of the NSCN (I-M) leaders who signed the ‘historic’ Naga Peace Accord with the Prime Minister Modi-led Union government in 2015, are the latest to the be added to the list of potential Pegasus targets worldwide, the report said. The list, a leaked database that forms the basis of the Pegasus Project comprising thousands of numbers and accessed by the French media nonprofit Forbidden Stories contains some that were successfully targeted with Pegasus, a militarygrade surveillance tool that involves hacking a smartphone to compromise its contents. Forbidden Stories, with the help of Amnesty International, has involved 80 journalists from 17 news

organisations in 10 countries in this project. The Wire is the Indian partner for the project. Atem Vashum, Apam Muivah, Anthony Shimray and Phunthing Shimrang are some of the top NSCN (I-M) leaders that have been featured in the list, says The Wire.

West Bengal chief minister and TMC party chief Mamata Banerjee called for all opposition party leaders to unite against the BJP ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha election, amidst the row over use of the Pegasus spyware on several Indian figures. Banerjee was speaking at the annual Shahid Dibash (martyrs day) function of the TMC. Significantly, she made most of her speech in Hindi and English, signifying intention to reach a national audience. “I don’t know what will happen in 2024. But all the opposition

parties need to start working together, and must start right now…We need to oust BJP to save the country,” she said. “Our phones are getting tapped. BJP is using Pegasus to spy on us. They have demolished all democratic institutions in the country. Today I cannot talk to any other political leaders, I cannot speak to my own party leaders…Pegasus has captured phones of all opposition leaders...BJP is demolishing democracy,” she said. She also appealed to the Supreme Court judges to take suo motu cognisance of Pegasus snooping row.

Congress Committee (NPCC) president K Therie has accused the state government of being responsible for delaying the implementation of Naga political solution as they refused to advise the governor to initiate the process. Since the gover nor functions on the advice of the council of ministers, Therie said it was constitutionally customary that the governor did not act suo motu when the council of ministers was alive unless there was breakdown of the constitutional machinery. “Therefore, solution is lying in cold storage,” Therie said. He said governor had time and again made it clear that “talks are over” even in the State Assembly, which also passed Motion of T h a n k s (Cont’d on p-8)

NSF demands implementation of NSSB Nalin Kohli calls on Rio

DIMAPUR, JUL 21 (NPN): Naga Students’ Federation (NSF) at its emergency presidential council meeting on Wednesday has reiterated its February 22, 2020 resolution for a blanket ban on departmental exams for recruitment to various group ‘C’ posts until Nagaland Staff Selection Board (NSSB) was implemented in the state. NSF’s reiteration of the resolution comes in the wake of the state government issuing office memorandum partially lifting ban on ap-

pointments. The NSF emergency presidential council meeting held at its conference hall, Naga Club Building, Kohima unanimously adopted three-point resolution. Questioning the rationale behind government’s decision to go ahead with departmental exams, but delaying the implementation of NSSB, NSF demanded that all existing vacancies for ‘group c’ post (not within the purview of NPSC) be requisitioned to NSSB and scrap departmental exams “once and for all.”

The house also demanded that the age relaxation for entry into g ove r n m e n t s e r v i c e should be in sync with the period of delay in the recruitment due to nonimplementation of NSSB and not merely one year. The NSF also appealed to the state government to comply with its legitimate demands in the interest of the general public without any delay. Failure to comply, the federation warned that it would be compelled to take up “befitting democratic agitation.”

DIMAPUR, JUL 21 (NPN): National BJP spokesperson and Nagaland in-charge, Nalin Kohli arrived Dimapur on Wednesday, amidst the ongoing political development in the state. Kohli, who is on a two-day visit, called on chief minister Neiphiu Rio at his Dimapur residence, where both discussed about strengthening the PDA government. Rio in a tweet said: “We had a positive meeting and discussed matters related to strengthening the PDA Government. I thank him for his constant support for Nagaland in our collective aspiration of striving for development and progress.” Later, Kohli also held a closeddoor meeting with BJP party leaders and legislators.

Israel-based firm NSO, the developer of Pegasus spyware said it will thoroughly investigate any credible proof of misuse of its technologies amid revelations that the software has been used to snoop on prominent leaders and journalists. NSO, which had denounced the leaked list, reiterated that the numbers on it are not related to the firm. “Any claim that a name in the list is necessarily related to a Pegasus target or potential target is erroneous and false,” it said in a statement titled ‘Enough is Enough’.

“As per the leaked data, while the phone number used by Atem Vashum – widely considered to be the successor of the Th. Muivah, the chairman of the NSCN (I-M) – attracted interest in mid 2017, that of Muivah’s nephew Apam Muivah was added shortly thereafter. Two phone numbers of Anthony Ningkhang Shimray, the commander in chief of the Naga Army of NSCN (I-M), also appear in the leaked records in late 2017. The phone number

of Phunthing Shimrang, the former commander in chief of the NSCN (I-M)’s Naga Army, and that of the NNPG convener, N. Kitovi Zhimomi, appear later, towards the first half of 2019,” the report stated. The report also states that N. Kitovi Zhimomi, convenor of the Naga National Political Groups (NNPGs), was also listed as a potential target. The Modi government had been in talks with NNPGs since the end of 2017 to find ‘one solution’ to the Naga issue. Evidence available with the consortium suggests that Zhimomi’s name was added to list towards the end of 2017 as well. Over the past few days, the Pegasus Project has thrown up names of many politicians, journalists, activists and citizens who were part of the spyware’s potential targets’ list. The Pegasus spyware, is manufactured by the Israeli NSO group. The group has staunchly said that they sell the spyware to government-affiliated agencies only.

Association’s secretary Arijit Sharma in a release hoped that the police had initiated a search operation and investigating the case. Requesting NGOs and public to help the family trace its missing member,

he assured that NMDA too would leave no stone unturned to trace the person. Arijit also urged anyone having any information on the matter to contact the following numbers: 6001192719 and 8794343446.

All these years have past and it is still incomprehensible to realize we can no longer hug or kiss you. Not even to whisper, "I love you, son". We are incredibly blessed and grateful that you were a part of our lives even if it was for the briefest part of a moment. We thank the Good Lord that He gave us the most treasured of all treasures, the love we received from you. We celebrate the fact that you are in a far better place than here. CAA, NRC nothing to do with Hindu-Muslim divide: RSS chief GUWAHATI, JUL 21 (PTI): RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat, who is in Assam on a two-day visit, said on Wednesday that the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) and the National Register of Citizens (NRC) have nothing to do with Hindu-Muslim divide and communal narrative surrounding the two issues were being peddled by some to gain political mileage. He further emphasised that no Muslim will face any loss due to the citizenship law. “After independence, the first prime minister of the country had said that minorities will be taken care of, and that has been done so far. We will continue to do so. No Muslim will face any loss due to CAA,” Bhagwat said after launching a book here, titled ‘Citizenship de-

The citizenship law is will provide protection to persecuted minorities in the neighbouring countries, the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) chief underlined. “We reach out to the majority communities, too, in these countries during a calamity.... So if there are some who wish to come to our country due to threats and fear, we will definitely have to help them out,” Bhagwat said.

The arrests were made in presence of an Executive Magis-trate,” he added.

SHILLONG, JUL 21: Meghalaya’s opposition Congress on Wednesday said that disputes in new areas along the MeghalayaAssam boundary is a “dangerous trend” and urged the National People’s Party (NPP)-led government to be “serious enough” in dealing with this inter-state dispute. “Now what we are seeing is there are new places where the dispute has started even in the areas not considered to be areas of difference. It is a very dangerous trend,” Congress spokesperson, Zenith M. Sangma said. Referring to the “give and take policy” to resolve the boundary issue, the senior Congress legislator said, “There are many modalities to be adopted. In the past, there were many engagements and meetings in the Chief Ministerial and Chief Secretary levels and also between the Deputy Commis-sioners and the present government should follow up on these.” “Many meetings and engagements were held during the Congress regime and lots of things have happened,” Sangma added. On the upcoming talks between the Chief Minister, Conrad Sangma and

Zenith M. Sangma

his Assam counterpart Himanta Biswa Sangma, the senior Congress legislator felt that though it is not going to solve issues pertaining to the boundary dispute, there should be continuous engagement between the two to address the issues pertaining to the inter-state boundary dispute. Both the Chief Ministers Himanta Biswa Sangma and Corad Sangma are scheduled to meet in Shillong on July 23 to chalk out a way forward to resolve the vexed boundary dispute. The Congress legislator said that the boundary

dispute is “very sensitive and contentious”, and therefore tackling these kinds of issues should be with the involvement of all the stakeholders and all political parties. In the past, Meghalaya has submitted documents and maps on its claim to the 12 sectors/areas of Upper Tarabari, Gizang Reserve Forest, Hahim, Langpih, Borduar, Boklapara, Non-gwah-Matamur, Khanapara-Pillangkata, Deshdemoreah, Block I and Block II, KhanduliPsiar and Ratacherra. The total area of difference is 2,765.14 square km, of which Blocks I and II cover 1,583.42 square km. The Meghalaya Assembly had in March 2011 passed a resolution to urge the central government to constitute a Boundary Commission to re-examine and redefine the inter-state boundary between the two states. The Assam assembly adopted another resolution negating the Meghalaya resolution.

The panel, which has maximum members from the ruling BJP, has summoned officials from the Ministry of Electronics, Information and Technology and the

Ministry of Home Affairs. Sources in the panel said the Pegasus phone tapping issue will definitely be raised in the meeting and details will be sought from the government officials. The issue also rocked proceedings in Parliament as opposition parties launched a scathing attack on the government. Describing the entire snooping incident as a matter of “national security concer n”, Tharoor had demanded an explanation from the government. Speaking in Lok Sabha, Union IT and Communications Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw had dismissed the reports as “baseless” and said that the allegations levelled just ahead of the Monsoon session of Parliament were aimed at maligning Indian democracy.

“Accordingly, all states and UTs report cases and deaths to the Union Health Ministry on a regular basis. However, no deaths due to lack of oxygen have been specifically reported by states and UTs,” Pawar said in a written reply. Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Wednesday attacked the Centre over its statement that there were no deaths due to lack of oxygen during the Covid second wave, alleging that the fatalities happened because the government increased oxygen exports in the pandemic year and did not arrange tankers to transport it. Hitting out at the gover nment, Priyanka Gandhi said, “’No death due to lack of oxygen’: Central Government. The deaths happened because -- in the pandemic year, the government increased oxygen exports by about 700 per cent.”

NEW DELHI, JUL 21 (PTI): Opposition parties on Wednesday reacted strongly to the central government’s claim in the Rajya Sabha that no deaths due to lack of oxygen were specifically reported by states and UTs during the second Covid-19 wave. ot only the opposition parties but also media and prominent personalities in India were outraged after a conglomerate of news organisations across the world published reports claiming that the Israeli spyware, Pegasus, was used to spy on journalists, politicians and other prominent citizens. Pegasus software is developed by the Israeli company-NSO (Niv,Shalev and Omri-names of the firm’s founders). The software Pegasus is a spyware that enables the remote surveillance of smartphones. The Pegasus spyware is classified as a weapon by Israel and any export of the technology must be approved by the Israeli government. A report published on Sunday, ahead of the ongoing Monsoon Session of parliament , stated that Pegasus was used to hack the phones of around 300 Indians, including journalists, politicians, Opposition leaders and even a few ministers of the Centre. The report has further claimed that most of these prominent individuals were targeted between 2018 and 2019 ahead of the Lok Sabha elections. As soon as the report came out, the Opposition attacked the Centre as the Israeli firm behind Pegasus has always maintained that the software is only sold to governments and not to private players. The opposition demanded immediate discussion in the lower and upper houses but the government refused. This led to disruption as Parliament on the second consecutive day Tuesday. The Trinamool Congress vowed that it will continue to disrupt Parliament till the government comes clean on the charges of snooping and surveillance. Trinamul MPs also protested near the Gandhi statue in the Parliament courtyard after the name of its Lok Sabha MP Abhishek Banerjee and of poll strategist Prashant Kishor came up. According to media reports on Tuesday, Pegasus spyware was used to bring down the JD(S)-Congress coalition government in Karnataka in 2019. Reports suggest that the phone numbers of opposition leaders such as then chief minister Kumaraswamy Gowda, Siddaramaiah and deputy chief minister G.Parameshwara and their assistants were tapped through use of Pegasus. The portal scroll.in, indicated that India was indeed a client and user of the spyware, since the NSO Group has stated several times that it only sells its spyware to “vetted governments.” It also said researchers at Citizen Lab, the University of Toronto’s cyber-security group that has previously studied the use of Pegasus, have concluded that India is one of the company’s clients. Moreover, according to the Guardian, “the selection of Indian numbers largely commenced around the time of Modi’s 2017 trip to Israel, the first visit to the country by an Indian prime minister and a marker of the burgeoning relationship between the two states, including billions of dollars in deals between Delhi and Israeli defence industries”. This is significant because Pegasus is classified as a cyber weapon and any export must be approved by the Israeli Defence Ministry. Interestingly, sacked former union minister Ravi Shankar Prasad who was minister of communication(2019-2021), electronics & information technology(2016-2021),law and justice(2016-2021) and who should have known something about it, has come out strongly in defence of the government. The only defence that is credible will be if it is probed by a joint parliamentary committee or a committee headed by a sitting judge of the apex court.

DailyDevotion The Doorway to the Kingdom

Blessed are the poor in spirit… —Matthew 5:3 Beware of thinking of our Lord as only a teacher. If Jesus Christ is only a teacher, then all He can do is frustrate me by setting a standard before me I cannot attain. What is the point of presenting me with such a lofty ideal if I cannot possibly come close to reaching it? I would be happier if I never knew it. What good is there in telling me to be what I can never be— to be “pure in heart” (Matthew 5:8), to do more than my duty, or to be completely devoted to God? I must know Jesus Christ as my Savior before His teaching has any meaning for me other than that of a lofty ideal which only leads to despair. But when I am born again by the Spirit of God, I know that Jesus Christ did not come only to teach— He came to make me what He teaches I should be. The redemption means that Jesus Christ can place within anyone the same nature that ruled His own life, and all the standards God gives us are based on that nature. The teaching of the Sermon on the Mount produces a sense of despair in the natural man— exactly what Jesus means for it to do. As long as we have some self-righteous idea that we can carry out our Lord’s teaching, God will allow us to continue until we expose our own ignorance by stumbling over some obstacle in our way. Only then are we willing to come to Him as paupers and receive from Him. “Blessed are the poor in spirit….” This is the first principle in the kingdom of God. The underlying foundation of Jesus Christ’s kingdom is poverty, not possessions; not making decisions for Jesus, but having such a sense of absolute futility that we finally admit, “Lord, I cannot even begin to do it.” Then Jesus says, “Blessed are you…” (Matthew 5:11). This is the doorway to the kingdom, and yet it takes us so long to believe that we are actually poor! The knowledge of our own poverty is what brings us to the proper place where Jesus Christ accomplishes His work.

NAGALAND POST, DIMAPUR THURSDAY, JULY 22, 2021

Post-mortem

In response to WSSU’s appeal to waive off 3 months of school fees

W

hile we understanding your concern for the plight of the students and their parents/guardians, we would like to highlight certain pertinent issues in regard to the matter. We also share the same concerns as you but the fact is Private schools are also the victim of pandemic. We thus ask you to go through the details of this letter minutely so as to comprehend why Private Schools are always put in the wrong limelight. The All Nagaland Private Schools’ Association (ANPSA) is a conglomeration of all private schools of Nagaland associated under one umbrella for the welfare of the Managements, Staff Members, Parents/Guardians, and students thus envisaging a common goal to extend quality education and to mitigate the differences among private schools as a common platform for the benefit of all. However, ANPSA cannot dictate policies which may infringe the autonomy of private schools. Moreover, ANPSA is not an extra-judicial organization, nor are any organizations extra-judicial for that matter. Therefore, we cannot order or dictate upon the private schools falling under our purview to waiver off fees as it is the internal matter of all private schools. Being aware of the financial difficulties faced by the parents and guardians of the students, yet the private schools are also facing similar problems and multiple financial crunches even before the COVID-19 pandemic set in. Hereunder, we would to like to present our views

“I

on the matter: A. M a n y p r i v a t e schools in Nagaland have already been giving a lot of concessions and scholarships to the underprivileged students even at the cost of huge financial losses of the schools. Most private schools face the additional problem of many parents not paying their wards’ fees throughout the year, with excuses of various economic reasons. Here also the private schools are at the receiving end without any assistance. Who is going to shoulder the added burdens of the private schools in such matter? What is the point in seeking fees waiver when previous dues are still not cleared, due to which many private schools are unable to pay their staff salaries or have been forced to shut down? B. Presently while most of the private enterprises have totally shut down and ceased all activities, the private schools are still actively involved in conducting online classes including assignments, projects, PPTs, etc. so that the students are not disadvantaged academically, though, the task of conducting the online classes is much more challenging and requires more resources. C. When we think logically, the admin, accounts and establishment offices of the private schools are actively functioning even in lockdown as these are essential for conducting online classes and day-to-day Online activities. Besides online classes the schools also have to bear huge expenditures in utilizing services of third-party apps and

t’s not winning but taking part in Olympics” the motivational signage at the Sports Authority of India (SAI) Guwahati was enticed lots of onlookers as there’re plenty of recreational facilities like parks and sports grounds for joggers in the heart of the city. I too got inspired during my college days to run on the rubber track surface like sprinter Carl Lewis that made the ground feel like a springboard, giving energy towards increasing speed. The Olympic motto is also coined by three Latin words: Citius-AltiusFortius mean Faster-HigherStronger. Now the Tokyo Olympics is around the corner. With the mega events rolling out in the Japanese capital, Indians at home don’t seem very enthusiastic about it. India’s medal hunts in Olympics so far had disappointed. It was just 28 medals (9G 7S 12B) after Norman Pritchard’s winning 2 silvers in Paris 1900 under the British-India flag. India’s first Olympics gold came in London 1948 under the tri-colour although it won three Olympics gold even before independence. The golden era ended in Moscow 1980 though India won 11 medals (8-1-2) with legendary Dhyan Chand and Balwant Singh. Wrestler KD Jadav won an independent India’s first individual bronze in Helsinki 1952. Leander ends long wait in Atlanta 1996 with bronze while the first women weightlifter Karnam Malleswari won bronze in Sydney 2000 followed by Capt Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore for silver in Athens 2004. An Olympic gold had eluded Indian for over hundred years, until shooter Abhinav Bindra owned the podium at Beijing 2008 along with bronzes from Vijender Singh and Sushil Kumar in boxing and wrestling respectively. London 2012 Olympics bagged its best haul,

technical tools which are expensive. Schools also provide transportations to teachers for carrying out Online Classes. One should also take into account the expenditures that the private schools are incur ring while paying for the inter net broadband connections and the maintenance and upkeep of the computers, electricity bills and other peripherals for which most of the private schools depend primarily on the regular payment of school fees. Another area of expenditure that we often overlook is the payment of regular salaries to the teachers and other staff members. The school buses may not be running but drivers and the handymen have to be paid, hostels may not be functioning but the wardens appointed for the hostels have to be paid. (N.B No Hostel is taking mess fees during lockdown). Similarly, every other staff member of the private schools needs to be paid their due salaries on a regular basis. Moreover, some of the private schools which do not have their own building premises have to pay for the rents of the school or hostel buildings. D. D e s p i t e t h e i r quality contribution and employment opportunities for the society many private schools r un in deficit and do not receive any funds from either the central or state governments. The private schools are ever ready to take up the humanitarian task provided the State Government allocates Financial Grant to private schools so that they can in turn pay the salaries of employees.

It is also important to note that most of the students in Nagaland enjoy the privilege of receiving Merit, Pre-Matric and Post-Matric Scholarships from the Gover nment which could be soundly utilized by the students for the matter at present. According to recent statistics published in the Morung Express media, Nagaland rates the highest unemployment in the whole of Nor th East. On the contrary, when it comes to employment, Private Schools Sector in Nagaland generates the second highest after the State Government: creating various businesses and job opportunities which surely curtails the government’s employment problems. We are generating a major chunk of employment opportunities for many educated unemployed youths of the society and thus helping the state in boosting up its economy. The private schools in Nagaland are always at the forefront of quality education even when running with meagre self-generated funds, mostly through fees, which is approx.10% in comparison to the entire budgetary allocation given to the Government Schools each year, still Private Schools are able to cater to majority of students of the state with quality education without any assistance. Here, we advise you to kindly look into the loopholes in the functioning of the Government Schools as well, instead of always finding faults and discrepancies in Private Schools alone, especially at a time when the Private Schools are juggling

pandemic burns and performing duties. Each year a lion’s share of approx. Rs 1 Lakh per student is allocated to government schools (in the form of mid-day meal, free uniforms, tuition fees etc.). But we all know very well where all these funds end up. Our question to you and other students’ unions is why not keep a check on all these anomalies and why not question the government for their failure in providing quality education if your concerns are genuine (one will surely be skeptical of such bias actions, as an act of biasness is another or even worse form of Corruption),and why are you adamant upon creating a diversionary tactic of issuing diktats to private schools alone to lower or do away with fees, which is the basis of their survival? In fact, Student Union bodies should respect Private Schools as they were groomed and nurtured by them at one point of time. Besides, in a statement published by NSF on 30th June’21 via Nagaland Post, they had reflected on how Government should look into the matter and appreciated the Private Schools for waiving off school fees. Also, the fee structure of private schools in Nagaland is miniscule when compared to other states’, yet many criticize the private schools in Nagaland but never raise fingers when exorbitant amounts of fees are demanded by private institutions outside Nagaland. Have you ever thought what will be the fate of education in Nagaland if the private schools stop operating? What would happen to all the

students and their career? The private schools are in fact the Golden Goose of both the education sector and the economy of Nagaland. If you kill this Golden Goose, you will be doing so at the peril of a huge blunder which may not go down well in history. Helen Keller rightly said, “The only thing worse than being blind is having sight but no vision!”Our request to WSSU and other Students Bodies is therefore to not lose sight of their vision and support the endeavour of Private Schools to promote Nagaland as an Educational Hub and Destination whereby our state will benefit in terms of inflow of tourism and economic income for every sector, if students start pouring in from other states provided quality of education and educational infrastructure are improved along with our added unique cultural biodiversity. This can only happen when Private Schools are encouraged and enough autonomy is given without any hindrance. As mentioned above the Association feels that it is not wise to further ask its members to waiver off the School fees as desired by you as all private schools have their own prerogative and policies in fees structures, which cannot come under one blanket statement. Besides, we would also like you to reflect over our previous statement, published recently on the 11thof July’21 in various newspapers. We expect you to understand the core of the matter and analyze logically. Dr. Andrew Ahoto Sema, President, ANPSA

Can India thrive in Tokyo? six medals with silvers for wrestler Sushil Kumar & shooter Vijay Kumar and bronzes for Saina Nehwal, Mary Kom, shooter Gagan Narang and wrestler Yogeshwar Dutt. In Rio 2016, silver for PV Sindhu and bronze for wrestler Sakshi Malik have brought some respite from hope and glory. But those aren’t enough. The world’s second most populous nation has the worst Olympics record in terms of medals per head. Can other sports flourish in a cricket crazy nation? Ironically cricket isn’t played in Olympics other than Paris 1900. India must determine to erase the memory of a disappointing past with a hope in double digit target. The number of Indian athletes participating has seen a rise in the past three editions. With 228 members’ strong contingent including 119 athletics in 18 disciplines competing 85 medal events, India has sent a strong contender for Tokyo, which is a huge affair with 46 disciplines of 11324 athletics from 206 countries. However Tokyo Olympic won’t be anything like in the past. The projection contains more uncertainty over Covid scare although the US is expected to once again top the Summer Games. The Virtual Medal Table forecast India at 19th position with jumping 17 medals (4-5-8) from just 2 in the last games. Expectation is very high in shooting with at least 8 medals followed by 4 in boxing, 3 in wrestling and 1 each from archery and weightlifting. Wrestler Bajrang Punia, grappler Vinesh Phogat, world number one shooter Elavenil Valarivan, 10 m air pistol mixed team Saurav Chaudhary and Manu Bhaker have high hope to raise Indian tricolor and play national anthem at Tokyo. Six time world champion Mary Kom is in her second Olympics medal appearance after bronze in Rio 2016. Lovelina Borgohain becomes the first

woman boxer and second from the state Assam to represent after Shiva Thapa in London 2012. The competitors from North East are winning their places with a total of 8. Nilakanta Sharma (Manipur), Sushila Chanu (Manipur), Lalremsiami (Mizoram) for Hockey, Saikhom Mirabai Chanu (Manipur) for Weightlifting, Sushila Likmabam (Manipur) for Judo and Sikkim’s Tarundeep Rai for Archery are among them. Athletics has never been India’s strong suit at the Olympics however Milkha Singh and PT Usha were India’s historic nearwins at the Games but emerging javelin throwers Neeraj Chopra and Shivpal Singh have raised hopes around. World champion PV Sindhu will be aiming to better her silver from the last games. The Indian boxers punched as many as nine tickets to the Tokyo Olympics. Never undermine the talent of Indian men’s hockey team, who sit fourth in the world rankings. Qualifying for Olympics is a major hurdle for every sportsperson. As many as 15 Indian shooters have achieved Olympic qualification so far, making it the country’s largest contingent at any games. Youngsters Divyansh Singh Panwar and Elavenil Valarivan are highest-ranked in the 10m Air Rifle men’s and women’s respectively, while Manu Bhaker has had prolific returns and medal expectations are quite high. Ranked second in the world, the former world champion Mirabai Chanu is among the favorites for a medal. Despite all odds, my bet for Tokyo is on top 10 athletes who are expected to clinch medals. Hope PV Sindhu (Badminton), Mary Kom and Amit Panghal (Boxing) Saurabh Chaudhary and Manu Bhaker (Shooting), Mirabai Chanu, Vinesh Phogat and Bajrang Punia (Wrestling), Deepika Kumari and Atanu Das (Archery) would shine in their

respective events. India can thrive in Olympics if she could ensure more players to have a proper system for athlete selection and training from a young age. Ironically sports have never been a priority for the government. Sport has always taken a back seat vis a vis education. Sports as education can also help children for its development. Should sports be made compulsory in education curriculum? Under the Khelo India scheme, the government is supporting. Unfortunately India got caught up at the bottom of overall medal standings 67th out of 87th medal winners in

the last edition. Our country has not always done enough to support its athletes. There is more to India’s sorry performance than just a shortage of funds or infrastructure. But for me, Olympics mean more than just winning medals. Winning a medal is good but it’s the best feeling for any sportsman competing in front of the whole world with great athletics. And viewers are waiting for the Blue Riband Sprint events of 100m, 200m, 400m, hurdles and relays that have historically been the biggest crowd-pullers at the Olympics, sadly spectators aren’t allowed. Reader’s Post Sir,

Proud of our girls

I was thrilled and proud of our young girls after I read the headline “Girls outperform boys in HSLC, HSSLC exams”, on the Nagaland Post website. Let us not only celebrate the glory of female prowess but also take pride in having increased girl student success as well. A society’s treasure is its scholar and an educated woman makes an educated clan! Isn’t it true? The equally potential, yet forgettable till many years, the gender of the society has proved her audacity time and again! Nagaland has been seeing active participation from the girls, in the exams for many years now, and I can never be more proud of my state. Merentila Ao, Dimapur, (aomeren434@gmail.com)

NAGALAND POST, DIMAPUR THURSDAY, JULY 22, 2021

of CM candidate EGI demands SC-monitored probe Human-to-human transmission Noin projection Karnataka, says Congress into Pegasus phone tapping allegations of bird flu rare, says AIIMS chief

NEW DELHI, JUL 21 (PTI): As the country reported the first confirmed case of human death due to Avian influenza, AIIMS chief Dr Randeep Guleria on Wednesday said that human-to-human transmission of the H5N1 virus is very rare and there is no need to panic. However, there is a need to do contact tracing and also take samples and look for any poultry deaths in the area from where the child who died due to the virus was residing, the AIIMS director told PTI. A 12-year-old boy from Haryana, who was infected with the H5N1 virus, recently died at AIIMS Delhi. The National Institute of Virology, Pune had confirmed the infection, Dr Guelria said. “The transmission of the virus from birds to humans is rare and sustained human-to-human transmission of the H5N1 virus has not yet been established and therefore there is no need to panic. “But then people working closely with poultry must take precautionary measures and maintain proper personal hygiene,” Dr Guleria said. Dr Neeraj Nischal, an associate professor in the Department of Medicine at AIIMS, said Avian influ-

Dr Randeep Guleria

enza or bird flu is predominately a zoonosis, and there is no evidence of sustained human-to-human transmission so far. “Although few isolated family clusters have been reported, transmission in these clusters may have occurred through common exposure and in rare situation a very close physical contact; there is no evidence of human-to-human transmission via small-particle aerosols,” he said. “Serologic sur veys have not found evidence of asymptomatic infections among contacts of active cases and nosocomial transmission to healthcare workers has not been documented,” Dr Nischal said. “There is no need to worry if one is eating properly cooked poultry products. There is no evidence so far that it can be spread to people through properly cooked food. The virus gets destroyed when the food is

cooked at high temperature. One should avoid contact with infected poultry, especially ill or dying chickens,” he said. Dr Guleria said in the past when H5N1 avian flu influenza cases were reported from poultry, culling of poultry in those areas has been done to prevent the spread of infection and tackle it early. The H5N1 is usually transmitted to poultry through migratory birds, he said. People who work in close contact with poultry are at high risk of getting the infection, Guleria added. An AIIMS source had said the 12-year-old boy was admitted to AIIMS on July 2 with pneumonia and leukaemia. He died on July 12. While undergoing treatment, tests for COVID-19 and influenza were conducted. “His samples tested negative for COVID-19. It came out positive for influenza but was non-typable. It was sent to National Institute of Virology, Pune, where they confirmed it to be positive for H5N1 avian influenza,” the source had said.

Randeep Singh Surjewala

NEW DELHI, JUL 21 (AGENCIES): With Siddaramaiah on his right and state Congress chief DK Shivakumar on his left, Randeep Singh Surjewala, the party’s Karnataka incharge, today announced that the two will work together and neither will be projected as a Chief Ministerial candidate. The decision followed the eruption of internal fighting between their two camps over who would be the leader. Even though Siddaramaiah, a former Chief Minster, has denied any rift within the party, loyalists of both camps have in recent weeks been publicly backing their respective leaders for the top post in the state. U l t i m a t e ly R a h u l Gandhi had to intervene

and decide that no one will be given preference. When asked by NDTV who will lead the party -Punjab recently witnessed an ugly fight over leadership and Karnataka seemed to be moving in that direction -- Mr Surjewala said both Siddaramaiah and Mr Shivakumar had been asked to work together. The Congress says it’s mission in Karnataka is 150-Plus and MLAs will choose a Chief Minister after the assembly election. In the next few weeks, a much overdue reconstitution of the state Congress is expected to take place. The party’s Karnataka unit has so far not projected anyone as a Chief Ministerial candidate unlike in the run up to elections in Punjab where Amarinder Singh’s name was announced. The resolution of the crisis in Karnataka comes ahead of the impending resignation of BS Yediyurappa as Chief Minister. The Congress has been attacking the BJP government over corruption and failure to perform and plans a series of protests across the state.

NEW DELHI, JUL 21 (PTI): Expressing shock over media repor ts on widespread surveillance on journalists and politicians using Pegasus spyware, the Editors Guild of India on Wednesday demanded an independent Supreme Court-monitored inquiry into the alleged snooping. “The Editors Guild of India (EGI) is shocked by the media reports on the widespread surveillance, allegedly mounted by government agencies, on journalists, civil society activists, businessmen and politicians, using a hacking software known as Pegasus, created and developed by the Israeli company NSO,” the Guild said in a statement shared on Twitter. It said the reports, which have been published worldwide over the last few days by a consortium of 17 publications, point towards surveillance by multiple governments across the world.

“Since NSO claims that it only sells this software to government clients vetted by the government of Israel, it deepens suspicion of involvement of Indian government agencies in snooping on its own citizens,” read the EGI statement. An international media consortium had recently reported that over 300 verified mobile phone numbers, including of two ministers, over 40 journalists, three opposition leaders besides scores of business persons and activists in India could have been targeted for hacking using Pegasus software/spyware. The EGI condemned the surveillance on journalists saying it was an attack on the freedom of press.

“While some of the instances of surveillance might have been targeted against those who may be seen as credible national security threats, what is disturbing is that a large number of such targets were journalists and civil society activists. This is a brazen and unconstitutional attack on freedom of speech and press,” the Guild said, adding that this act of snooping essentially conveys that journalism and political dissent are “now equated with ‘terror’”. “How can a constitutional democracy survive if governments do not make an effort to protect freedom of speech and allow surveillance with such impunity,” it said. Seeking an independent probe into the matter, the EGI demanded that the inquiry committee must include journalists and civil society activists to ensure independent investigation.

CCoNPI holds meet with NSCN (I-M) leaders (From p-1) It may be noted that the seven NPF rebels have been suspended from the party and disqualification case is pending in the Gauhati High Court, Kohima Bench. CCoNPI membersecretary and minister Neiba Kronu said that the committee was “very aggressive this time and are very serious” about Naga political solution. When asked about the purpose of an all-party government, Kronu said the intention this

time was with a purpose—Naga political solution. Meanwhile, senior NSCN (I-M) leader Rh Raising has reportedly told a regional TV channel that the need to arrive at early solution was stressed at the meeting. Raising, however, stated that separate flag and constitution continued to be an issue of contention. On whether NSCN (I-M) would sit across the table with NNPGs to sort out differences, Raising said NSCN (I-

M) had already declared that it was willing to accept “all our brothers in different camps” if they join the process together under the Framework Agreement. The meeting was attended by 16 members of the CCoNPI led by its convenor and chief minister Neiphiu Rio while the 15-member team of the NSCN (IM) was led by its ato kilonser Th. Muivah where yaruiwo Q. Tuccu, kedallo Tongmeth Wangnao and attended the meeting.

it transforms its networks to al-low its customers to reap the full possibilities of the hyperconnected world where Industry 4.0 to cloud gaming and virtual/augmented reality become an everyday experience.

Govt responsible for delaying... (From p-1) on the Governor’s address. However, NPCC president said that outside the House, the Assembly continues to demand one solution and to resume talks again. If PDA honestly wanted solution, Therie said they should advise the governor to implement the solution and assure their support in such implementation. NPCC chief said the Core Committee on Naga Political Issue during a meeting at Police Conference Hall on July 19 admitted that its demand to resume talks was meant for NSCN(I-M) and not for NNPGs. Therie claimed that they were afraid to tell the NSCN (I-M) directly and have been “dragging the entire Nagas for they have no fear to the stakeholders they represent.” NPCC said that the option available for PDA was to advise the governor in a resolution to implement the solution and assure support to implement effectively, otherwise, they should resign and pave the way for governor to implement the

solution independently. Congress also said that the option for the Government of India was to keep the Assembly in suspended animation or dissolve the assembly and implement the solution. Opposition-less Hindutva govt has disgraced state: NPCC Stepping up the attack on the move by the opposition NPF to join the ruling PDA government, NPCC asserted that “an opposition-less Hindutva government in Nagaland” has disgraced Nagaland, a Christian state, before the world. In a press release, NPCC president K Therie alleged that NPF joining the PDA was only to get berths in the ministry and “join in looting the public exchequer.” Therie also claimed said there was nothing they have done or could do to speed up solution. Further, NPCC expressed shock that NPF party has endorsed its MLAs to join Hindutva when they stood with Congress against CAA and for identity and secularism in the past, adding that it was now history for them.

A Rs 10 cut in fuel excise duty will affect fiscal deficit by 0.58 per cent, and lower inflation only by 0.2 per cent, CNBC-TV18 reported, citing sources to confirm the Centre has no plans to cut excise duty on fuel. Floods hit Central China

25 KILLED, OVER 1 MN AFFECTED ; PREZ XI CALLS IN PLA

People walk through floodwaters along a street in Zhengzhou in central China’s Henan Province, Tuesday. (AP/PTI)

BEIJING, JUL 21 (PTI): At least 25 people, including 12 subway passengers, were killed when the heaviest rainfall in 1,000 years hit China’s central Henan province, prompting President Xi Jinping on Wednesday to deploy the Army to rescue those trapped in inundated subways, hotels and public places. A total of 1.24 million (12.4 lakh) people were affected and 1,60,000 evacuated, state-run Global Times reported. The official media quoted local officials as saying that 25 people were killed and seven others listed missing in the massive

floods. Twelve people were killed and five others injured when subway stations were hit by the floods, the report said They died when their subway train was hit with rapidly rising floodwaters on Tuesday night, the Hong Kong-based South China Morning Post reported. Two people were also killed when a wall collapsed. The massive floods, described by meteorologists as a once-in-a-lifetime event, has resulted in apocalyptic scenes in the provincial capital Zhengzhou, a metropolis of 12.6 million, with its public avenues and subway tunnels getting submerged

with surging waters. Vi d e o s p o s t e d o n the Chinese social media showed petrified passengers trapped in subway trains clinging on to handlebars desperately waiting for help as floodwaters raised up to their necks. Official media released videos of rescue workers helping people stuck in subway tunnels to safety. Videos showed people trying to wade through floods in the downtown of the city while scores of cars and other vehicles washed away. Some videos also showed people falling into the massive cave-ins of the roads. Rainwater poured into the subway tunnel of the city’s Line Five, trapping an unknown number of passengers aboard a subway train. Xi ordered the deployment of the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) and said that authorities at all levels must give top priority to ensuring people’s safety and property as massive floods ravaged the province and Zhengzhou city.

Emmanuel Macron

BOSTON, JUL 21 (AP): French President Emmanuel Macron leads a list of 14 current or former heads of state who may have been targeted for hacking by clients of the notorious Israeli spyware firm NSO Group, Amnesty International has said. “The unprecedented revelation ... should send a chill down the spine of world leaders,” Amnesty’s secretary general, Agnes Callamard, said in a statement on Tuesday. Among potential targets found on a list of 50,000 phone numbers leaked to Amnesty and the Paris-based journalism nonprofit Forbidden Stories include Presidents Cyril Ramaphosa of South Africa and Barham Salih

of Iraq. King Mohammed VI of Morocco and three current prime ministers — Imran Khan of Pakistan, Mustafa Madbouly of Egypt and Saad Eddine El Othmani of Morocco — are also on the list, The Washington Post reported. The Post said none of the heads of state would offer their smartphones for forensic testing that might have detected whether they were infected by NSO’s military-grade Pegasus spyware. Thirty-seven phones identified in the investigation were either breached or shows signs of attempted infection, it has reported. The Post and 16 other members of a global media consortium were granted access to the leaked list. Another member, the French daily Le Monde, determined that 15 members of the French government may have been among potential targets with Macron in 2019.

(IANS): A plane carrying over 40 passengers crashlanded into a military base in Gedo region of Somalia on Wednesday, officials said. Officials said the passengers were evacuated safely after a Skyward flight from Nairobi crash-landed at Burahache military camp, Elwak, Gedo region in Somalia, about 15 km from the Somalia-Kenya border, Xinhua news agency reported. “No one was hurt in the incident,” said a local official who declined to be identified. The plane had left Wilson Airport of Nairobi, capital of Kenya, and was destined for Mandera in northeast Kenya on Wednesday morning when the incident happened. Sources blamed the incident on a mechanical problem but added aviation experts would be flown to the scene to carry out investigations. Survivors said they sustained minor injuries after the plane landed on its landing gear within the military camp, partially damaging it.

Ariel Henry

PORT-AU-PRINCE, JUL 21 (IANS): Ariel Henry has been sworn in as Haiti’s new Prime Minister, nearly two weeks after the assassination of the country’s President Jovenel Moise. The late president asked Henry to take the job, days before he was gunned down in the capital, Portau-Prince. But Henry was in a political tussle with Claude Joseph, Haiti’s interim prime minister at the time of the attack. Joseph stepped down on Monday and said Henry’s appointment would pave the way for elections in September. Speaking at a ceremo-

ny in Port-au-Prince, the new prime minister called for unity, the BBC reported on Wednesday. “One of my priority tasks will be to reassure the people that we will do everything to restore order and security,” said Henry. Joseph, who has returned to his former role as foreign minister, joined him at the ceremony and warned of a tough task ahead. The inauguration took place as an official memorial began for Moise, who was killed at his private residence on July 7. His wife Marine was also shot, and she arrived back in Haiti last week after receiving medical treatment in the US. Moise, 53, had ruled by decree in Haiti since 2018. Before his death, the country was already mired in political and security crises, with no working parliament, frequent antigovernment protests, and a surge in gang violence.

ete Tong is set to be honoured with the prestigious Music Industry Trusts Award (MITS). The 60-year-old BBC Radio 1 DJ - who was awarded an MBE (Member of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire) in the 2014 New Year Honours for services to broadcasting and music - will be recognised for his three-decade spanning career in music and his dedication to championing emerging talent. The prize will be p r e s e n t e d t o Pe t e i n par tnership with The BRIT Trust and Nordoff Robbins charities at a gala ceremony held at Grosvenor House Hotel in London on November 1. The artist, DJ, music producer, and A&R said in a statement: “It is a

huge honour to be given the MITS Award and to have the opportunity to highlight two exceptional charities, The BRIT Trust and Nordoff Robbins. The past year has seen the music industry suffer like never before - especially the live music and clubbing sectors, but we are strong and optimistic for the future. I proudly look forward to accepting the award at the event this November and continue to represent my industry.” David Munns OBE, chairman of the MITS Award committee, added: “I am delighted that the MITS has decided to honour Pete Tong and his pre-eminent reputation in the dance music scene. For over 30 years he has been a pioneer in his field and is known worldwide for his commitment to build

recognition for his music genre. Congratulations, Pete!” Pete follows in the footsteps of 2019 recipients Harry Magee and Richard Griffiths of Modest! Management, and the likes of Sir Lucian Grainge - the chairman and chief executive officer of Universal Music Group; Glastonbury organiser Michael Eavis; and The Who’s Roger Daltrey. Since star ting his career at the BBC’s youth station in 1991, Pete has gone on to shape the station’s dance music c ove r a ge, a n d , m o r e recently, helped launch Radio 1 Dance on the BBC Sounds platform in 2020. The chart-topper also plays to packed-out arenas as part of his Classics project with conductor Jules Buckley and the Heritage Orchestra, which sees them rework iconic dance classics with the help of a 50-person orchestra. And Pete continues to work in the business side of things, too, having launched a label in 2019, becoming the President of Three Six Zero recordings, and working with the likes of Paul Kalkbrenner, Gerry Read and Franky Wah. eteran actor Anupam Kher says there are no shortcuts to becoming a good actor, and one has to work hard and keep practicing. Offering a piece of advice for budding actors, Kher shared: “Acting has no syllabus, that’s why people come up with best performances even at the age of 80 or later. My advice to budding actors is that they have to practice their art constantly. It is something the more you practice, the better you will become. You have to work hard. It is every day’s job for them to keep understanding, and to do the same thing again and again.” “Also, they have to develop a keen interest in people, because people, various people, are the bank of actors. The more they will know people, the more they will know emotion, the more they will know various aspects of anger, nine Rasas. So, I think that is what is important, and not to carry the burden of who you become. There are no shortcuts in acting,” he added. On the work front, Kher features as an anchor in the recently released documentary film “Bhuj: The Day India Shook”.

T

Anupam Kher

Sharing his experience of being a part of the project, the actor said: “In a project like this, ‘not acting’ is the most important thing. You have to first understand the essence of it. You are like a ‘sutradhar’, a narrator who has a soul, who empathises with them, who does not indulge in self-pity. It is like when you do meditation, in a state of meditation you have to say things that people relate to. You can’t fake it.” “It is something that comes with experience as a person, not necessarily as an actor. It comes from a word called empathy. That’s how I approached it with a total sense of purity. In my mind it was a tribute to all the people that suffered losses,” he further said. (IANS)

aylor Swift is not submitting ‘Fearless (Taylor’s Version)’ for contention at the Grammy and CMA Awards. The 31-year-old megastar has already won four Grammys for the original recording of 2008’s ‘Fearless’ and several CMA Awards, and despite the new release containing six new tracks, Taylor has decided not to submit the LP for any prizes at the major ceremonies. A statement issued to Billboard from Republic Records read: “After careful consideration, Taylor Swift will not be submitting Fearless (Taylor’s Version) in any category at this year’s upcoming Grammy and CMA Awards. “Fearless has already won four Grammys including album of the year, as well as the CMA Award for album of the year in 2009/2010 and remains the most awarded country album of all time.” However, the ‘Shake It Off ’ hitmaker will be entering her 2020 LP ‘Evermore’ in all categories at the Grammys. Its sister record, ‘folklore’, scooped Album o f t h e Ye a r a t 2 0 2 1 Grammys in March.

Tamim Iqbal ton helps B’desh clean sweep ODI series

Bangladesh, riding on a century from skipper Tamim Iqbal, defeated hosts Zimbabwe by five wickets in a high-scoring third and final One-day International at the Harare Sports Club to make a clean sweep of the series. Chasing 298, Iqbal struck a 97-ball 112 as he guided Bangladesh to 302/5 with two overs remaining. Earlier, Zimbabwe’s Regis Chakabva, Ryan Burl and Sikandar Raza notched up half-centuries to help the home team to 298, giving them a good chance of victory on Tuesday. Chakabva was promoted to open the batting with Tadiwanashe Marumani and while the latter departed on 8, Chakabva ended up playing a stellar innings, scoring 84 off 91 deliveries to lay the foundation for a big total. After a middle-overs slump, when the hosts were reduced to 172/5 in the 35th over, Raza and Burl accelerated the innings with 57 and 59 respectively to take the hosts to an imposing total. Liton Das and Tamim Iqbal then opened the batting for Bangladesh and it soon became evident that Zimbabwe bowlers had their task cut out.

LO N D O N, J U L 2 1 (AGENCIES): Giannis Antetokounmpo scored 50 points as the Milwaukee Bucks claimed their first NBA title for 50 years with a 105-98 victory over the Phoenix Suns. The Bucks’ 4-2 series win was sealed in front of a 17,000 crowd as 65,000 celebrated outside the Fiserv Forum. They are only the fifth team to win the best-of-seven finals series after losing their first two matches. “I’m happy I was able to do it with this team for Milwaukee,” said Antetokounmpo. The Suns were seeking a first NBA crown in their 53-year history, having also lost NBA Finals series in 1976 and 1993. However, they were unable to contain Antetokounmpo, who became only the seventh player to register 50 points in a Finals game. It was also the third game in the series in which

Brisbane to host 2032 Olympics TOKYO, JUL 21 (AGENCIES): The Australian city of Brisbane has been selected to host the 2032 summer Olympics, said the International Olympic Committee on Wednesday. “The International Olympic Committee has the honour to announce that the Games of the 35th Olympiad are awarded to Brisbane, Australia,” IOC president Thomas Bach said. T h e d e c i s i o n wa s greeted by cheers from the Brisbane delegates at the IOC session, reported news agency AFP. In Brisbane, where a crowd had gathered, fireworks set out after the announcement was telecast on a big screen. With this, Australia has become the second country after the United States to host the Olympic Games in three different cities. Prior to this, Melbourne had staged Olympics in 1956 and Sydney had in 2000. Several cities and countries had expressed interest in hosting the 2032 Games, including Indonesia, Hungary’s capital Budapest, China, Qatar’s Doha and Germany’s Ruhr valley region. However, Brisbane had been the preferred host, chosen in February, and

had earned the nod of IOC’s 15-strong executive board in June. The city’s bid had earned repeated praise from the IOC for its high percentage of existing venues, support from all levels of government and the private sector, experience in organising major events and its favourable weather, among other things. A commitment in April from the Australian government to split the infrastructure costs 50-50 with the local government allowed Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk to forward the necessary financial guarantees to the IOC. The state of Queensland hosted the 2 0 1 8 C o m m o n we a l t h Games. Awarding the Games

to Australia was also a nod to senior IOC member John Coates, a current IOC vice president, and one of the closest allies to IOC president Thomas Bach. Coates, who reaches an IOC age limit of 74 in 2024 and will be forced to leave the organisation, had unsuccessfully attempted to land the 1992 Games for Brisbane that eventually were awarded to Barcelona. The IOC overhauled its bidding rules in 2019 to reduce costs and make the process easier for cities. There are no official candidate cities campaigning ahead of the vote as has been the case in the past. Instead, the IOC picks a preferred host after talks with all interested cities and then puts that city to a vote at its session.

The opening of Tokyo 2020 will be a moment of joy and relief, said the head of the International Olympic Committee on Wednesday. With two days to the official opening of the 32nd Olympic Games, the president of the IOC, Thomas Bach, told reporters that when athletes will enter the stadium on Friday 23rd of July, it will be “a moment of joy in particular for the athletes because I know how much they are longing for this moment and that they can finally be there, they can enjoy this moment under very special circumstances, and a feeling of relief because no need to tell you the road toward this opening ceremony was not the easiest one.” Translating a German saying expressing great relief, Bach said: “There is a saying that if you feel this kind of relief that there are stones falling from your heart, so if you hear some stones falling on the 23rd (of July) they may come from heart.” Bach held a press conference attended by a high level delegation from

Australia, the country who won the bid for the 2032 Olympic Games. Brisbane has been picked to host the future Olympics. The Australian city was the inevitable winner of a one-candidate race steered by the IOC to avoid rival bids. The Games will go back to Australia 32 years after the popular 2000 Sydney Olympics. Melbourne hosted in 1956. The Australian Minister for Sport Minister Richard Colbeck said: “It is a huge privilege for a nation, a state or a city, to be awarded the biggest and greatest sporting event on the planet. “We are hugely excited by the opportunity that has presented to us by Brisbane ‘32 to host the games of the 35th Olympiad and Paralympic Games.” B r i s b a n e f o l l ow s 2028 host Los Angeles in getting 11 years to prepare. It won in a new bidding format that let the IOC pick a preferred choice early. Bach said the games to be held in Australia are in line with the new road taken by the IOC.

GUWAHATI, JUL 21 (PTI): Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, Assembly Speaker Biswajit Daimary and Leader of Opposition Debabrata Saikia on Wednesday pedalled bicycles, wishing success to pugilist Lovlina Borgohain, the lone competitor from Assam in Tokyo Olympics. Along with them, several ministers, scores of MLAs and senior officials took part in the ‘Go for Glory - Lovlina’, a bicycle rally that started at Last Gate and concluded at Nehru Stadium in the city. Speaking at the event, Sarma said the rally was organised with a vision to support and motivate “Assam’s daughter” Lovlina,

who is representing India at the Tokyo Olympics. He also felicitated the boxer’s father Tiken Borgohain at the event, while urging people to come together and cheer for the pugilist. “We are so proud of Lovlina who is the first female athlete from #Assam to represent India at the #Olympics $@$# the second boxer after Shiva Thapa to participate in the same from the state. May you continue to bring glories to the nation,” Sarma tweeted after the function. Saikia said Lovlina is the pride of Assam and he is confident that she will make the state and country proud with her stupendous performance. Along with Sarma,

Daimary and Saikia, Deputy Speaker Numal Momin, ministers Bimal Bora, Atul Bora, Urkhao Gwra Brahma, Pijush Hazarika, Sanjoy Kishan and Jogen Mohan also pedalled through the Guwahati roads. The Assam government had in June extended financial assistance of Rs 5 lakh to the Arjuna awardee to help her prepare for the mega sporting event. Lovlina, 23, who had qualified for the Tokyo Olympics in March last year, will be competing in the welterweight category (69 kg). The much-delayed Tokyo Olympics are scheduled from July 23 to August 8, with the boxing events starting from July 24.

World no. 1 shooter Hill out of Ronaldinho rolls back the years in Real Vs Barcelona Legends cash Olympics after testing positive

Amber Hill (File)

LO N D O N, J U L 2 1 (IANS): British skeet shooter Amber Hill has withdrawn from the upcoming Tokyo Olympics after testing positive for COVID-19. She tested positive for the virus in the United Kingdom before departing for Tokyo. The 23-year-old Amber, ranked No 1 in the world, was due to compete in the women’s skeet event. She was a finalist in the event in Rio Olympics 2016. As of now, no re-

placement will be selected in Amber’s place. She will now isolate as per UK’s COVID-19 guidelines. “There are no words to describe how I’m feeling right now,” said Amber in a statement by the Great Britain Olympic Committee. “After five years of training and preparation, I’m absolutely devastated to say that last night I received a positive Covid-19 test, meaning I’ve had to withdraw from Team GB’s shooting team.

She wished luck for the GB team currently in Tokyo. “I will be back from this, but right now I need some time to reflect and take in what has happened,” concluded Amber. “This is an incredibly sad situation for Amber after she’s worked so hard to earn her Olympic place for Team GB. Our focus is to now make sure Amber is kept safe and well, both physically and mentally, and we have the support in place to help her through this difficult period,” said GB shooting Team Leader Steven Seligmann. Amber, a silver medallist in skeet at the 2018 Commonwealth Games, had earned an Olympic quota by winning the women’s skeet competition at the ISSF World Cup in New Delhi in March this year. In June, she won the bronze medal in skeet at the European Shooting Championships in Osijek, Croatia.

M A D R I D, J U L 2 1 (AGENCIES): Real Madrid Legends beat Barcelona Legends 3-2 on Tuesday evening in Israel. Ronaldinho demonstrated once again that class is timeless with a jaw-dropping performance in the legends clash. The Nou Camp star appeared with a slew of other all-time greats in yesterday’s exciting match in Tel Aviv, Israel, and soon stole the show. Pedro Munitis, Alfonso Perez, and Ruben de la Red scored for Los Blancos in a one-of-a-kind clasico. Both teams, notably Barcelona, were rife with famous individuals from the game. Rivaldo, Javier Saviola, Deco, and Ronaldinho all started for the Blaugrana, with the latter scoring the game’s first goal. In the first half, the Brazilian legend scored from the penalty spot and immediately performed his characteristic celebration. Ronaldinho converted a penalty kick. the football field. With the likes of Deco and Rivaldo surrounding him, it didn’t take long for Ronaldinho to emerge into the forefront and remind viewers of his exceptional talent. With little over six minutes remaining, the astute

playmaker grabbed onto a loose ball, looked up, and attempted to chip Jordi Codina from the centre circle. That stunning spotkick was far from the only highlight of the Brazilian’s performance in the first half.

At one point, the 41-year-old demonstrated that he still has it with the ball at his feet in open play, the two-time FIFA World Player of the Year rolling back the years against Barcelona’s main opponent. Ronaldinho took the

ball just outside the area, surged past some players, and blasted a shot towards goal, only to have it agonisingly rebound off the upright. Despite the fact that the thunderous shot did not hit the back of the net, it was a moment of enchantment from a player who helped many of us fall in love with the game. As a result, we’re going to enjoy every single second of it, and we recommend that you do the same. He was a genuinely unusual talent in his professional playing days, a player who could mix freestyler-Esque skill movements with world-class production. Ronaldinho appeared in 207 games for Barcelona in all competitions, scoring 94 goals and providing 71 assists. He’s one of the alltime greats, and there can’t be many football fans on the planet who didn’t grin after seeing him work his magic in Israel.

Netherlands routs Zambia 10-3 in Olympic women’s soccer Joshua to fight Usyk in Sept TOKYO, JUL 21 (AGENCIES/AP): Vivianne Miedema scored four goals and the Netherlands routed Zambia 10-3 to open the Olympic women’s soccer tournament on Wednesday. Miedema, the all-time leading scorer in the Women’s Super League, as well as the top career scorer for the Netherlands, had goals in the ninth, 15th, 29th and 59th minutes. Lieke Martens added two goals for the fourthranked Netherlands, which advanced to the World Cup final two years ago in France but fell to the United States. The Tokyo Games are the Netherlands’ first Olympics. Barbra Banda scored all three goals for Zambia, the lowest ranked team in the field at No. 104. Netherlands coach Sarina Wiegman is stepping down after the Olympics to lead England in the next World Cup cycle. Sweden stuns US 3-0

Stina Blackstenius scored a pair of goals and Sweden once again stunned the United States at the Olympics with a 3-0 victory Wednesday in the women’s soccer tournament. T h e A m e r i c a n s, ranked No. 1 in the world and the favorites to win

gold in Tokyo, were riding a 44-match unbeaten streak heading into the match. But Sweden, ranked No. 5, has been the U.S. team’s nemesis of sorts in recent years. The Swedes bounced the Americans from the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Games in the quarterfinals, the earliest U.S. Olympic exit ever.

Then in April, Sweden played the United States to a 1-1 draw in Stockholm, which snapped a winning streak dating back to January 2019, when the Americans lost to France in the run-up to the World Cup. Blackstenius’ header into the far corner off a cross from Sofia Jakobsson in the 26th minute gave Sweden the first-half lead. The United States came out stale, with its best chance of the opening half coming in the final moments when Rose Lavelle’s shot hit the post. Coach Vlatko Andonovski made changes for the second half, subbing in Carli Lloyd for Alex Morgan and Julie Ertz for Sam Mewis. But Blackstenius scored again in the 54th minute, beating goalkeeper Alyssa Naeher, as the Americans continued to struggle. Lina Hurtig then scored in the 72nd. The loss was the first for the United States under Andonovski, who took over when former coach Jill Ellis stepped down following the team’s World Cup victory in France.

T h e S we d e s we r e without Magda Eriksson because of injury. The team said she has been training, but because of the compact schedule of the tournament she was held out of the opener. Tokyo is Sweden’s seventh Olympics. After eliminating the Americans on penalties in the quarterfinals five years ago, the Swedes went on to win the silver medal, losing to Germany 2-1 in the final. The United States has four Olympic gold medals, more than any other nation. The team is vying to become the first to win Olympic gold following a World Cup title. Sweden now leads Group G heading into Saturday’s game against Australia in Saitama, while the United States faces New Zealand. The top two teams in the group advance the knockout round.

Anthony Joshua and Oleksandr Usyk

LO N D O N, J U L 2 1 (AGENCIES): Anthony Joshua’s world heavyweight title defence against Oleksandr Usyk will take place at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on 25 September. Joshua, 31, will risk his IBF, WBA and WBO belts against the Ukrainian, who is his mandatory challenger. Usyk, 34, has not fought for a title as a heavyweight but held all four belts a division lower at cruiserweight. Joshua was ordered to defend his WBO title after the collapse of his bout with fellow Briton Tyson Fury. “We are two Olympic gold medallists who have fought our way to the top and never avoided challenges,” Joshua said. “The venue is exceptional, the

atmosphere will be electric, I’m honoured to be the first person to fight in such an awe-inspiring venue. The stage is set and I am ready to handle business.” Despite months of negotiations a fight between Joshua and WBC world champion Fury for all four belts failed to materialise. Joshua called Fury “a fraud” after their proposed meeting on 14 August in Saudi Arabia was called off.Fury will face American Deontay Wilder, who he defeated to become a two-time world heavyweight champion in his most recent bout in February 2020, for a third time in Las Vegas on 9 October. Former undisputed world cruiserweight champion Usyk has 18 wins from 18 bouts.
