RPP launches online signature campaign for President’s Rule DIMAPUR, JUL 22 (NPN): Rising People’s Party (RPP) has launched an online campaign seeking dismissal of the UDA government and imposition of President’s Rule in the State. The campaign has been launched through online portal change.org and aims to gather at least 10,000 signatures, which would then be submitted to Prime Minister Narendra Modi to take a resolute action. In a statement, the party recalled that it had submitted a representation to the Central government on May 12 this year pleading for President’s Rule in Nagaland on grounds of financial emergency in the State. The situation had worsened a lot since then and it was only befitting that RPP continued to raise the issue on behalf of the suffering public, the statement added. RPP also reiterated

some of the “dis-honourable achievements” of the ruling coalition, which included Nagaland being bracketed as Worst Performing State under six parameters – poverty, health, affordable energy, sustainable cities, industries and infrastructure – as per SDGI index (NITI Aayog) 2021; Worst Performing State as per State Energy and Climate index (SECI), 2022 of NITI Aayog (ranked 33rd out of 35 States and eight Union Territories); perpetual deficit State budget (minus Rs 2,212.74 crore for 2022-23); non-payment of salaries to 130,000 State government employees; fiscal irresponsibility as per the latest CAG report, including fraudulent withdrawals amounting to thousands of crores of rupees in almost all government departments. Fur ther, the par ty pointed out that Nagaland had been ranked as the

Worst Performing State under National Health Index 2019-20 (NITI Aayog), while Nagaland University was ranked as the worst in the Northeast with score in the 151-200 band under National Institutional Ranking framework (NIRF). As per the latest NITI Aayog Innovative Index 2021 released on July 21, 2022, Nagaland was the worst and the last ranked State among the “NE and Hilly States” comprising 10 states. Also, Nagaland High Court building remained incomplete even after 15 years, while Nagaland was presently the only State in India without a medical college. RPP also cited non-implementation of Centrallysponsored schemes (CSS) and non-release/parking of CSS funds in civil deposit (CDs), breakdown of law and order situation with increase (Cont’d on p-8)

BJP Nagaland celebrates Droupadi Murmu’s victory NSF asked to vacate Naga Club building Correspondent

KO H I M A , J U L 2 2 (NPN): Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Nagaland state unit organised a special programme at Mhacha-ki here to celebrate the victory of NDA candidate Droupadi Murmu in the Presidential election, when she scripted history by becoming India’s first tribal president. Speaking at the programme, BJP Nagaland state president and Minister for Higher Education and Tribal Affairs, Temjen Imma Along, described it as a “red-letter day and a proud moment for tribals in the country”.

Temjen Imma Along

He said that out of 133 crore people about 12 crore population were tribals and therefore Murmu getting elected was a momentous achievement. “To have a tribal woman become the 15th president of world’s largest democracy is a huge achievement and a moment of great satisfaction for all the tribals

across the country,” Along said. “For the first time in Independent India coinciding with the 75th year of Indian Independence what could be more befitting to see a tribal woman representing women empowerment getting elected to the highest post in the country,” Along maintained. He said the “emergence of a mother from a minority community” to lead the country was in stark contrast and a depiction of a country headed under BJP rule. He thanked the political parties in Nagaland for unanimously voting 100 percent for NDA candidate and displaying the undeniable

DIMAPUR, JUL 22 (NPN): Naga Club (NC) has requested the Naga Students’ Federation (NSF) to vacate the Naga Club building at Kohima on or before August 27, as the Club executive council has unanimously decided to begin the construction by September 1. In a letter to NSF president, NC said that reconstruction of the building was a long-felt need. Though NSF was an “endeared tenant”, the club stated that the allotment of the rooms by the then general secretary Naga Club Vilavor Liegisie on rent basis was given to NSF in a demi order note (Cont’d on p-8) specifically mentioned on the

tribal bond evident across the country. He also thanked state chief minister Neiphiu Rio and NPF president Shürhozelie for displaying unity in spite of the political differences. In his short speech, Minister for Soil & Water Conservation, Geology & Mining and chairman, NSMDC, V Kashiho Sangtam, said Murmu’s victory was a good opportunity for Nagaland as a tribal has been elected to the highest post in the country. He also expressed his appreciation to the Prime Minister for nominating a tribal lady.

body of rental application letter dated April 4, 1983. It said NSF paid Rs 500 in rent for the month of April 1983 on April 7, 1983, after which the federation never paid Naga Club house rent from May 1983 till date. However, as a student organization, the club said it treated them as children, and therefore never questioned non-payment of house rent. NC said it consider itself as parents and elders and therefore NSF’s nonpayment of house rent has never been made an issue in the past for all these years since May 1983 nor has it been made an issue today, for the same reason. However, with the passage of time,

NC said that its property had undergone the severest of depreciation and stood dilapidated without proper amenities, projecting Nagas particularly the Naga Club and all that it represents, in a very poor light, as though it were in a deep slumber. The club said it was, therefore, imperative and inevitable to demolish the existing building in its entirety and build a totally new building, well equipped with facilities providing all modern amenities for the welfare of all the Nagas. It therefore requested NSF to vacate the building in toto on or before August 27, so as to enable its “humble and noble venture” of building reconstruction.

NFR land issue: LURC cites Art 371 (A) Metsubo calls for innovation to protect environment DIMAPUR, JUL 22 (NPN): Landowners Union Rangapahar Crossing (LURC) has drawn the attention of the elected members, ‘concerned organization(s), state government and public to the news items: “MLAs slam Rly land encroachment” published on July 16 and “DNSU flays NFR, state govt on land grab” on July 20 (both in Nagaland Post). In a rejoinder, LURC president Hetokhu Awomi said while the matter over land encroachment was under litigation, the documents furnished by Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR), claiming ownership of 134.503 acres (almost

half of Dimapur City) could “neither be validated nor substantiated. (It may be mentioned that the NFR had alleged that total encroached railway land over which pattas have been issued totaled 30.283 hectares or 74.8 acres out of 53.806 Hectares or 132.92 acres). Awomi asked if Nagas could “afford to give up such a vast area of land by disowning their rightful ownership?” Further, Awomi said land owners were not averse to any fresh development by railway department but such development “should not be carried out at the cost of the

people (destruction of developed land and properties.) Awomi asserted that it was the bounden duty of all responsible citizens and social organization “to protect the right of the Nagas” and for which NFR also should “take cognizance of land holding system of Nagaland” existing since inception of a state under the Indian union. He maintained that in order to protect the rights and interests of both NFR and landowners, adequate land compensation should be paid to all rightful land owners in order to clear the deck “for smooth functioning of NFR in the state of Nagaland”.

KOHIMA, JUL 22 (NPN): Rural Development minister Metsubo Jamir has appealed to engineering fraternity to adopt innovative systems for protecting environment, while also ensuring that development did not stop. ENSF demands equitable distribution of projects DIMAPUR, JUL 22 (NPN): Easter n Naga Students’ Federation (ENSF) has demanded that all proposed/ approved projects under various departments of the State be reviewed and allocated with equity in the larger interest of Nagas. In a statement, Eastern Naga Students’ Federation president Chingmak Chang and assistant general secretary Kaibo Konyak also strongly objected the alleged biased distribution of funds in the recent selection process. ENSF cautioned that the trend of inclining towards a section of people/areas in

the process of development would only jeopardise the very fabric of Naga integration in the near future. ENSF said that though various State government departments took up many schemes, programmes and development projects for the overall development of Nagaland, there had been a lot of disparity in implementing the same. The federation acknowledged that developmental activities had been pursued under the present State government in Eastern Nagaland and Nagaland, but the lion share was enjoyed by a few section of society.

ENSF alleged that the eastern areas and people were being deprived at large. To buttress their allegation, the federation pointed out that out of Rs 279.72 crore, just Rs 11.95 crore was allotted for Eastern Naga areas under Pradhan Mantri Jan Vikas Karyakram (PMJVK), while out of 30 projects in the list of priorities projects under NorthEastern Council (NEC) for 2022-23, only one project at an estimated cost of Rs 3.50 crore was earmarked for Eastern Nagaland. Similarly, out of Rs 9,09,30,000 for 17 projects as special assistance for Tribal

Sub-scheme in 2020-21 (for creation of non-recurring capital asset), only Rs 1.5 crore was allocated for Eastern Nagaland. ENSF said that such biased gesture was a clear manifestation of lackadaisical and step-motherly treatment towards Eastern Nagaland, adding that such attitude had been maintained since the inception of Nagaland as a State. The federation alleged that suppression and deprivation that denizens of Eastern Nagaland had faced since time immemorial still continued. (Full text on p-6)

employed, for contributing to nation building process in various capacities and helping the country keep pace with the developed nations. Jamir said engineers were directly contributing to the overall well-being of the society, adding that their contribution to make

lives better was well recognised and appreciated by all. He commented that their contribution would impact government initiatives in the Northeast and would be a deciding factor for success or failure of these initiatives. With the Act East Policy, he noted that that the engagement of Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN) had become a central pillar of India’s foreign policy and the North-eastern States played an important role as a bridge between India and ASEAN countries. galand was the only state which was formed out of political agreement, APC said even after statehood, there was no time to invest in economic development which resulted in the state lagging behind, especially in food processing system. In this regard, Kikheto said it was time to invest and that, with diverse agro climatic zone, there was scope for agro-based industry in the hilly terrains. He stated that the peculiar land holding system and diverse cultivation also posed as challenges. Kikheto appealed to the bankers and investors

present, to invest in the state and not to “shy away” from the state as the state government has provided 200 and 20 crores which he said, was yet to be spent. He informed that the meet was organised with an objective to have a practical idea of what was happening in the food processing sector outside North East India and to showcase new technologies, latest schemes and benefits of the government of India. Speaking on the scope of food processing sector in the state, director, Horticulture said there were plenty of fruits for food processing industries. He said the demand for processed food were on the rise and cheaper workforce could be effectively utilised to setup large low-cost production markets bases for domestic and export good investment opportunities existed in many food processing industries. He encouraged the bankers to create awareness for farmers and entrepreneurs about various government schemes. Earlier, welcome address was delivered by one of the representatives of Indian Chamber of Commerce (ICC), followed by technical sessions. B’desh court to hear ULFA weapons case on Oct 18

DHAKA, JUL 22 (IANS): The appeal and death references of smuggling 10 trucks loaded with weapons at the Chittagong Urea Fertiliser Ltd. (CUFL) jetty for the separatist group, United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA), have now been scheduled for hearing on October 18, said the Bangladesh High Court bench of Justices Shahidul Karim and Fatima Najib. The Supreme Court and the High Court bench of Bangladesh have fixed a date for hearing of death reference and appeal in a case on smuggling 10 trucks loaded with weapons in CUFL jetty in Chittagong. The 10 trucks full of weapons were seized in April 2, 2004, despite suspected efforts of certain “influential quarters” for their safe passage to ULFA in the presence of its military wing chief Paresh Barua during the Bangladesh Nationalist Party-Jamaat coalition government. Tareq Zia and Lutfuz Zaman Babar, the paid agents of Inter-Services Intelligence, are appealing against the death sentence in both cases. Tareq met with ‘D’ company in Dubai, before the grenade attack on Hasina, said close associates of Tareq to IANS requesting anonymity. Following the upcoming election in 2023, the opposition BNP and its ally Jamaat-e-Islami have been embroiled in fresh controversy. Officials familiar with the investigation said their extended probe found Chinese firm NORINCO to have produced the alleged seized weapons. The ship of QC Shipping that carried the illegal consignment to Bangladeshi territory is owned by Pakistan paid BNP leader and war criminal Salauddin Quader Choudhry. On October 1, 2013, S.Q. Chy was convicted of genocide, killing thousands of Hindus, including legendary businessman and Ayurvedic legend Nutan Chandra Singha in 1971, who saved several hundred

academicians, including Anisuzzaman, Padma Bhushan awardee, and sentenced to death by the ICT. He was hanged on November 22, 2015. “Like the (Hindu) Goddess Durga, this case too has 10 hands, which are very strong. Very influential quarters of the then BNP-led government were involved in it who should be brought to justice with caution,” Chief prosecution lawyer of the case, Kamal Uddin said before the court. The case documents and judgment have reached the High Court as death reference from the lower court while several convicts in the case have filed separate appeals with the HC challenging the earlier verdict against them. Fourteen people were sentenced to life imprisonment and seven years each under two separate sections of the Arms Act. Two of the convicted, Jamaat Islami Chief (Amir), Matiur Rahman Nizami. Another top Jamaat leader Ali Ahsan Muzahid was sentenced to death when convicted in the 1971 war crime trials for genocide and atrocities with Pakistan Army.

Another convicted former top Intelligence official Abdur Rahim died of Covid-19. The appeal by those convicted will bring back the focus on the active patronage to weapons and terrorism during the BNPJamaat alliance government in 2001 and 2006. Since the Chittagong arms seizure was followed by the deadly grenade attack on Sheikh Hasina, the then opposition leader during a meeting before a rally of Awami League within five months, an attack that nearly killed Hasina, clearly exposes the unholy and coveted alliance Tarique Rahman held with Pak-paid Jamaat to destroy the secular community and IndiaBangladesh friendship. However, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Wednesday credited Chief Minister Hasina for taking adequate steps that curbed militancy in his state. Lauding Hasina’s efforts, the Assam Chief Minister said crackdown by Hasina’s government on the insurgent group ULFA inside Bangladesh has saved Assam.

Japanese Encephalitis claims Himanta claims 15-16 Assam Cong MLAs voted for Murmu 38 lives, infects 238 in Assam

GUWAHATI, JUL 22 (IANS): At least 38 people died of Japanese Encephalitis in Assam in the last three weeks while 238 were infected, prompting the Health Department to undertake various measures to deal with the disease, officials said on Friday. According to the National Health Mission (NHM), since July 1, at least 38 people have died and 238 people have fallen ill after being infected by the vector-borne disease in more than 20 of the 35 districts. With the direction

of the NHM authorities, District Rapid Response Teams were constituted to keep a close watch on the situation and to take preventive measures. Japanese Encephalitis and malaria kill many people in Assam every year, specifically during the monsoon season that usually starts in May and stretches to October. Principal Secretary, Health, Avinash Joshi and National Health Mission Director M.S. Lakshmi Priya are in close touch with the district authorities and asked them to remain

pro-active to deal with the situation. The NHM has also issued a standard operating procedure and guidelines to tackle the situation arising with the outbreak of the Japanese Encephalitis. The health workers have been conducting massive awareness against the Japanese Encephalitis. Last year, at least 40 deaths were reported due to Japanese Encephalitis, officials said. Japanese Encephalitis is transmitted by infected mosquitoes mainly during the monsoon.

GUWAHATI, JUL 22 (PTI): Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Friday claimed that of the 22 opposition MLAs of the state, who voted for NDA nominee Droupadi Murmu in the presidential election defying their party line, 15-16 are from the Congress. Altogether 124 MLAs of the 126-member assembly exercised their franchise in the presidential election on July 18, while two legislators from the AIUDF were outside the country. Compared to the NDA’s strength of 79 in the House, Murmu secured 104 votes, while joint opposition candidate Yashwant Sinha

got 20. There are 44 opposition MLAs in the state assembly. Of the 22 “extra” votes that the NDA candidate received, “15 to 16 are from the Congress and the remaining may be from the AIUDF or Independent”, Sarma told reporters here. Assam state Congress president Bhupen Bora admitted that there was crossvoting in the presidential poll and claimed that at least six MLAs from his party voted in favour of Murmu, defying its stated support for the opposition candidate. “In a presidential election, MLAs and MPs vote according to their conscience and not as per their

TMC threatens to take M’laya govt to court for denying power supply

Correspondent

SHILLONG, JUL 22: The Trinamool Congress on Friday threatened to drag the Meghalaya Energy Corporation Limited (MeECL) and the Meghalaya government to court if power is not restored within a week in villages across the State. TMC spokesperson, Saket Gokhale wrote to Deputy Chief Minister incharge Power, Prestone Tynsong regarding the “criminal practice” of denial of electricity to entire villages due

to a few “defaulters”. “I have been apprised of a shocking and inhuman tactic employed by the state government and the MeECL against poor villagers. Numerous reports and firsthand accounts have said that MeECL shuts down electricity to an entire village when a few villagers are late in paying their power bills. Even when the majority of villagers have paid their bills, the main electricity transformer to the village is shut down on the grounds that a handful of villagers

have not made payments,” Gokhale, who is currently visiting Meghalaya, told Tynsong. Demanding “immedi-

COCOMI, UNC demand Manipur State Population Commission Correspondent

IMPHAL, JUL 22: Two major pressure groups in Manipur on Friday demanded passing a resolution on setting up Manipur State Population Commission during the ensuing monsoon session of the state Assembly which will commence on July 25 and have 11 sittings and will continue till August 5. A joint statement of the Coordinating Committee on Manipur Integrity (COCOMI) and the United Naga Council (UNC) issued today demanded that the state Assembly adopt a resolution to set up the state population commission. The joint statement reiterated their demand for deportation of illegal migrants and checking mushrooming of unrecognized villages in the hill areas of the state. The joint committee drew the attention of all the members of the state Assembly to adopt the decision and send a proposal to the Central government for taking up necessary steps to check demographic imbalance in the state, arising out of the influx of illegal migrants into the state. The two pressure

groups further demanded updating the National Register of Citizens (NRC) in respect of the state of Manipur with a fixed cut-off base year to identify illegal immigrants. Earlier, on June 4, the COCOMI and UNC had submitted a joint memorandum to Manipur chief minister drawing his attention to initiate steps to check influx of illegal immigrants in the state. The copy of the memorandum was also submitted to the Prime Minister and Union home minister on June 10. In the memorandum, the two bodies sought immediate steps on the part of the Centre to check the demographic imbalance in the state. Other demands contained in the memorandum were to update NRC and deport illegal immigrants or to initiate alternative arrangements so as not to harm the interests of the indigenous people of the land. The two pressure groups pointed out that the demographic imbalance brought about by the influx of illegal immigrants adversely affected the socio-political, economic and cultural aspects of the indigenous people of the state.

ate” restoration of power, the TMC Spokesperson said, denying villagers’ power who have paid their bills on time is “not only atrocious but a criminal act of collectively punishing an entire villagers for the default of a few households.” “In case action is not taken immediately and the situation is not rectified, the government of Meghalaya and the MeECL would be made respondents in petitions at the appropriate judicial forums including the High Court of Meghalaya,”

Gokhale told Tynsong. “Neither the government of Meghalaya nor the MeECL has any right to deny electricity to villagers who have been making timely payments of their bills,” the TMC spokesperson added. Giving specific examples of villages, Gokhale said, Rari and Kosi Chora villages under Bajengdoba in North Garo Hills have had the transformer and electricity supply disconnected for the past two months only because a few

households had not made their payment. Similarly power was disconnected in Dingrepa and Matchu Ki villages over the same “frivolous issue” of some villagers not paying their electricity bills on time. “Let me remind you that under the Indian law and our Constitution there are no provisions for medieval practice like collective punishment. In fact Article 21 of the Constitution of India guarantees life and liberty to every person,” Gokhale noted in the letter.

islator and an Independent had attended a meeting where opposition nominee Yashwant Sinha was present to seek their support. It is obvious that some of them had links with the ruling camp.” He also stated that the party “will identify them and necessary action will be taken”. Asked whether the opposition AIUDF MLAs had voted for Murmu, Bora said, “Before looking into what other parties did, we will have to deal with our MLAs who did not support the opposition nominee”. AIUDF chief Badruddin Ajmal had earlier announced that his party

would support Murmu but in a turnaround a day before the presidential poll, it had decided to vote for the opposition nominee. On the day of the election, AIUDF MLA Karimuddin Barbhuiya had claimed he had evidence that “20 Congress members, if not more, voted in favour of Murmu”. The AIDUF has 15 MLAs in the state assembly but two of them did not vote in the election as they were not in the country. The ruling NDA has 79 MLAs in the state assembly, while three BPF members, who support the alliance in the House also voted for Murmu.

gets Y category security Oppn members walk out of parl panel meet TMC’s decision to abstain from Rajbhar amid growing proximity to BJP for not taking up Agnipath, says Venugopal VP poll disappointing: Margaret

NEW DELHI, JUL 22 (PTI): Opposition’s vicepresidential candidate Margaret Alva on Friday described the Trinamool Congress’s (TMC) decision to abstain from voting in the August 6 election as “disappointing” and said this is not the time for “whataboutery, ego or anger”. Her reaction came a day after the Mamata Banerjee-led party announced that it will abstain from the vicepresidential election as it did not agree with the manner in which the Opposition candidate was decided, without keeping it in the loop. “The TMC’s decision to abstain from voting in the VP election is disappointing. This isn’t the time for ‘whataboutery’, ego or anger. This is the time for courage, leadership and unity. I believe, Mamata Banerjee, who is the epitome of courage, will stand with the opposition,” Alva wrote on Twitter. The leaders of 17 Opposition parties, at a meeting, decided to field Alva, a former governor of Rajasthan and Uttarakhand, as

Margaret Alva their candidate for the vicepresidential poll. The leaders of the TMC and the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) were not present at the meeting that took place at the residence of Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader Sharad Pawar last Sunday. Pawar subsequently said he was in touch with both Mamata Banerjee and AAP leader Arvind Kejriwal and was confident of getting their support. The TMC and the AAP had supported the joint Opposition candidate for the presidential election, Yashwant Sinha. The ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA)

has nominated former West Bengal governor Jagdeep Dhankhar as its candidate in the vice-presidential poll. “There is no question of supporting the NDA candidate, especially Jagdeep Dhankhar. The TMC lawmakers have unanimously decided not to take part in the vice-presidential election,” national general secretary of the party Abhishek Banerjee said on Thursday, after a meeting of the party MPs at Mamata Banerjee’s Kolkata residence. Abhishek Baner jee, the nephew of West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, alleged that the Opposition candidate was decided without proper consultation and deliberation with his party, which has 35 MPs in both houses of Parliament. “We disagree with the process of announcing the Opposition candidate, without keeping the TMC in the loop. We were neither consulted nor was anything discussed with us. So we cannot support the Opposition nominee,” he said.

LU C K N OW, J U L 2 2 (PTI): The BJP-led Uttar Pradesh government accorded ‘Y’ category security to Suheldev Bharatiya Samaj Party president Om Prakash Rajbhar, a move seen in the context of the SP ally’s growing proximity to the ruling party. The development comes days after Rajbhar’s party broke ranks with the Samajwadi Party (SP) and voted for NDA’s presidential candidate Droupadi Murmu, who has defeated opposition pick Yashwant Sinha. The move has irked the Samajwadi Party which claimed that Rajbhar has been rewarded for his recent aggressive postures against the party leadership and that the party was aware of his continued links with the BJP ever since it returned to power for the second consecutive term in the Assembly polls earlier this year. According to a letter dated July 15 sent to the additional director general of police (security), Joint Secretary of the Home Department Vinay Kumar Singh said it has been decided to

extend ‘Y’ category security to SBSP president and Zahurabad MLA Om Prakash Rajbhar. Singh has also asked the ADGP to complete necessary formalities. Under the ‘Y’ category security cover, a protectee is provided 11 security personnel, including two personal security officers (PSO). When contacted, SBSP national spokesperson and Rajbhar’s son Arjun confirmed the party president being provided ‘Y’ category security. Reacting on the development, senior Samajwadi Party leader IP Singh termed the security extended to Rajbhar as the reward for his recent statements against them. Rajbhar has been in contact with the BJP ever since the return of the Adityanath government for the second consecutive time, I P Singh said. “All of us in the party are aware of it and in alert mode,” I P Singh said. Senior SP leader Udaiveer Singh saw grant of the ‘Y’ grade security to Rajbhar as part of quid pro quo between the two parties.

Hybrid militancy a new Airlines can’t deny boarding to disabled challenge by Pak: J&K DGP passenger without doctor’s opinion: DGCA

S R I NAG A R , J U L 2 2 (AGENCIES): Jammu and Kashmir’s Director General of Police (DGP) Dilbagh Singh Friday said that Hybrid terrorism is a strategic move by Pakistan “to get the crime committed and shield the criminal in the process”. “But so far the neighbouring country has failed to provide cover to the terrorists involved in innocent killings, “ the DGP said while talking to reporters at Anantnag after inaugurating the Women’s Police Station as per news agency KNO. “In this type of faceless militancy, hybrid militants kill people including innocents and policemen then go underground in a bid to give impression that they have done nothing. But police have busted and exposed all such underground

modules who were involved in innocent killings,” the DGP said. He said Hybrid militancy is “destined to fail as police network was very strong to counter it”. He said that the impression about police working on anti-militancy front was “wrong and the fact remains that social crimes are also being dealt with”. “Since terrorism has affected one and all in Kashmir, it looks like that police was focussing on handling militancy only,” the DGP said. He said that setting up of women’s police station was a move to bridge gap between police and women. “We will upgrade the women police stations across Kashmir to provide a breathing space to women. Such stations will also help deal with crimes against women to large extent,” the DGP said.

NEW DELHI, JUL 22 (PTI): If an airline feels a disabled passenger’s health is likely to deteriorate during a flight, it must consult a doctor at the airport and take an “appropriate decision” on whether boarding should be denied to the flyer or not, aviation regulator DGCA said on Friday. If the airline then decides to deny boarding to the disabled passenger, it will have to immediately inform the passenger in writing and mention the reasons in that note, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) said in a statement. The regulator had proposed the aforementioned regulations on June 3, six days after it had imposed a fine of Rs 5 lakh on IndiGo for denying boarding to a disabled boy at Ranchi airport on May 7.

No merit lists for CBSE exams to avoid ‘unhealthy competition’ among students

NEW DELHI, JUL 22 (PTI): The Central Board of Secondary Education will not declare merit lists for class 10 and 12 exams to avoid “unhealthy competition” among students, Examination Controller Sanyam Bhardwaj said on Friday. The CBSE did not announce merit lists in 2020 and 2021 as the results were declared on the basis of alternate assessment scheme

because exams could not be conducted due to the COVID-19 pandemic. “As per earlier decision of the board, no merit list will be declared to avoid unhealthy competition among students. The board is also not awarding first, second and third division to its students,” Bhardwaj said. “The board will issue merit certificates to 0.1 per cent of students who have scored the highest marks

in subjects,” he added. The results for the 2022 examination for classes 10 and 12 were announced on Friday. While 92.7 per cent of students cleared the Class 12 exam, 94.40 per cent passed the Class 10 exam. In Class 12, 1,34,797 students scored above 95 per cent and 33,432 scored above 90 per cent. In Class 10, 64,908 candidates scored above 95 per cent and 2,36,993 scored above 90 per cent.

IndiGo had on May 9 said the boy was denied permission to board the Ranchi-Hyderabad flight as he was visibly in panic. After the boy was prohibited from boarding, his parents also decided not to enter the plane. The DGCA had asked the public to send their comments on the proposed amendments by July 2. In a statement on Friday, the DGCA said it has amended its regulations to improve the accessibility of boarding and flying for disabled people. The amended regulations stated that the airline must not refuse boarding to any passengers on the basis of disability or reduced mobility. “However, in case, an airline perceives that the health of such a passenger may deteriorate in-flight, the

said passenger will have to be examined by a doctor in person - who shall in his/her opinion, categorically state the medical condition and whether the passenger is fit to fly or not,” the amended regulations mentioned. After obtaining the medical opinion, the airline shall take an appropriate decision on the carriage of such passenger, it noted. “In case of refusal of carriage by the airline, it shall inform the passenger in writing with the reasons therein immediately,” it mentioned. IndiGo CEO Ronojoy Dutta had on May 9 expressed regret over the May 7 incident and offered to buy an electric wheelchair for the disabled boy. Dutta had said the airline staff took the best possible decision under difficult circumstances.

NEW DELHI, JUL 22 (PTI): Opposition members on Friday walked out in protest from a meeting of the Parliamentary Committee on Defence, alleging they were not allowed to discuss the Agnipath scheme. Members of Congress and BSP urged committee chairman Jual Oram to allow a discussion on the Agnipath scheme, arguing it has huge implications and required parliamentary scrutiny, but were denied the permission. Congress MPs K C Venugopal and Uttam Kumar Reddy, besides BSP’s Danish Ali, who are members of the panel, argued with the chairman that the Agnipath scheme has already been discussed in the Consultative Committee on Defence and Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and the three service chiefs have made a presentation before it. The members are learnt to have contended that not allowing a discussion on Agnipath amounted to an insult to Parliament and that not informing the committee about the scheme

K C Venugopal is a breach of privilege. The leaders also urged him to list the issue for discussion in the next meeting, but the chairman denied permission, to which Oram is learnt to have said that the agenda of issues to be discussed at the committee meetings is decided in advance at the beginning of the year and hence this request cannot be entertained now. The Chairman, sources said, also told the opposition members that they could raise this in Parliament and discuss it there but did not allow the scheme to be discussed in the Committee. Venugopal later took to Twitter to say that members Uttam Kumar Reddy, Danish Ali and himself walked out in protest from today’s meeting of Parliament

Standing Committee on Defence “for not taking up the controversial Agnipath Scheme despite our repeated requests and my earlier letter addressed to the Chairman requesting the same”. “We urged the Chairman to clarify; Why the Parliament Standing Committee on Defence was kept in dark on the Agnipath Recruitment Scheme? Why the Scheme was not taken up in the committee’s budget scrutiny meetings despite involving financial implications? “The Chairman turned a deaf ear to these crucial questions and the scheme was not discussed. No discussion in Parliament, no deliberations in the Parliament Standing Committees, thus goes the way of bulldozing legislations in the Modi era,” he tweeted. Sources said the opposition members also highlighted that the Agnipath scheme was the biggest change in the armed forces since independence and needed to be discussed in the Parliamentary Committee on Defence, where government actions are scrutinised.

Political ego trips

t was a momentary bombshell which the Trinamool Congress dropped when it announced that the party will not support opposition candidate Margaret Alva of the Congress for the post of vice president. The announcement was made by Mamata Banerjee’s heir-apparent and nephew Abhishek Banerjee, the party all Indian general secretary. The decision of the TMC to not support even the NDA candidate and former West Bengal governor Jagdip Dhankar was of lesser consequence than throwing tantrums because Abhishek alleged, that the party was not consulted before deciding on Alva. Even if TMC had agreed to support Alva, it would have not made any difference on the eventual outcome since the NDA candidate Dhankar would have sailed through with votes from BJP and NDA including regional parties like YSRCP in Andhra Pradesh and BJD in Odisha etc. Mamata’s mercurial and temperamental behaviour is legendary and the TMC’s attack on the Congress is a continuing process. Mamata sees the Congress party as an irritant to her ambitions because the grand old party has proved to be the weak link in a perceived opposition unity to face the BJP in 2024. Therefore, Abhiskek’s bombshell announcement was clearly intended to isolate the Congress even if it meant breaking opposition unity in the process. TMC should have been gracious when Congress supports its national vice president Yashwant Sinha as the presidential candidate . The TMC’s decision to not support Alva on the plea that it was not consulted is a lame excuse. If TMC felt slighted, it should also recall that Mamata did not invite Congress for the meeting for opposition unity. Even if TMC wanted to abstain, it should have made known its displeasure when Sharad Pawar announced the name of Alva and have things sorted out instead of waiting for so many days. The whole issue of opposition unity to take on the BJP is like shooting in the dark. In fact the opposition parties oppose each more bitterly than against the BJP. Bloated egos and ambitions of each of the opposition parties such as TMC, AAP and TRS has ensured they’ll not get along. These three parties want to take centre stage in the name of opposition unity but are ready to snub each other anytime. TMC, AAP and TRS don’t want to play second fiddle when it comes to positioning themselves in the name of opposition unity .Questions arise when it comes to the need for opposition unity. The first is - who counts as opposition? ; what kind of unity is being talked about? and is opposition unity all that is needed to take on Modi’s BJP? Just being opposed to Modi does not mean they are the opposition . Unity bid without willingness to give up personal egos and ambitions is not getting them anywhere. The three parties championing unity is not relevant for most states in India. There are states such as Kerala, Punjab, Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh where the BJP is still not an electoral force that calls for a unity of non-BJP forces. The most important point is that at this time there is no leader to even comes close to Modi and ; India is not ready to elect a khichdi of bickering bunch.

DailyDevotion Sanctification (1)

This is the will of God, your sanctification… —1 Thessalonians 4:3

The Death Side. In sanctification God has to deal with us on the death side as well as on the life side. Sanctification requires our coming to the place of death, but many of us spend so much time there that we become morbid. There is always a tremendous battle before sanctification is realized— something within us pushing with resentment against the demands of Christ. When the Holy Spirit begins to show us what sanctification means, the struggle starts immediately. Jesus said, “If anyone comes to Me and does not hate…his own life…he cannot be My disciple” (Luke 14:26). In the process of sanctification, the Spirit of God will strip me down until there is nothing left but myself, and that is the place of death. Am I willing to be myself and nothing more? Am I willing to have no friends, no father, no brother, and no self-interest— simply to be ready for death? That is the condition required for sanctification. No wonder Jesus said, “I did not come to bring peace but a sword” (Matthew 10:34). This is where the battle comes, and where so many of us falter. We refuse to be identified with the death of Jesus Christ on this point. We say, “But this is so strict. Surely He does not require that of me.” Our Lord is strict, and He does require that of us. Am I willing to reduce myself down to simply “me”? Am I determined enough to strip myself of all that my friends think of me, and all that I think of myself? Am I willing and determined to hand over my simple naked self to God? Once I am, He will immediately sanctify me completely, and my life will be free from being determined and persistent toward anything except God (see 1 Thessalonians 5:23-24). When I pray, “Lord, show me what sanctification means for me,” He will show me. It means being made one with Jesus. Sanctification is not something Jesus puts in me— it is Himself in me (see 1 Corinthians 1:30).

Post-mortem

India’s economic woes need far-reaching reforms

P

rime Minister Narendra Modi said recently that India is the fastest growing economy at the moment. Statistics-wise, it may be true, as other countries are not doing too well on this count. But the question to be asked is this: is India’s growth story a myth or reality? On the face of it, the Indian economy may look reasonably good right now when compared to many other countries. Particularly after the Covid pandemic, our recovery seems to be relatively good. But the question remains: is India on the right track and is it on the proper road to recovery? It is difficult to say. The overall macroeconomic fundamentals of the Indian economy are not all that bad, but there are worrying signals and if corrective actions, some of them drastic, are not taken, the day is not far when the economy could face serious problems. More than it being Covid induced, the economic woes are structural and farreaching reforms are needed as was done in 1991 by the Congress govt. According to experts, India’s economic woes started in 2016, beginning with demonetisation, an ill-advised move. An economy which was growing at over 8 per cent started slowing down quarter after quarter, so much so that it fell close to 4 per cent in the last quarter before the Covid pandemic hit in 2019.

R

Covid only accentuated the problem, with growth touching its nadir at negative 24 per cent in one quarter of 2019-20. Even more than demonetisation, the poor implementation of GST hit the cash-based informal economy, which accounted for over 85 per cent of the employment and 90 per cent of the small businesses in the country. This led to the shrinking of demand in the entire country, which subsequently affected production, thereby the industry and the economy. Covid and the lockdown only made the situation worse. The question that is often asked is, will India go the Sri Lanka way or for that matter, Pakistan or Nepal? The answer is a certain no at the moment as there are several positives in the Indian economy with exports picking up, indicating some revival of economic activity. But inflation, depleting foreign exchange reserves, falling rupee, and spiralling crude oil prices are worrying and if structural correctives through the right economic policies are not taken, the Indian economy could face massive difficulties. The negative trends are already visible, with India’s economic growth projected over nine per cent this financial year having already been revised downwards several times, and the projections now range between 7 to 7.5

expenditure and debt servicing, which is dangerous. According to RBI’s report, Punjab, Rajasthan and Bihar are expected to remain stressed, with their debt to GSDP (state GDP) ratio likely to exceed 35 per cent by 2026-27. The other states in this situation include West Bengal, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh. The report said, “Risks to state government finances arise from macroeconomic uncertainty, declining own tax revenue, re-launch of the old pension scheme by some of the states, rising expenditure on non-merit freebies, expanding contingent liabilities and ballooning overdue to discoms, warranting strategic corrective measures.” These are strong words and a warning to those political parties which, for their short-term electoral gains, dole out freebies promised during elections, without ensuring they earn enough revenue to fulfil those promises. Free power, free bicycles, free laptops etc to get votes are not good ideas, particularly when the state’s economy is not doing well. If these states were separate countries like Sri Lanka, Nepal or Pakistan, they would have faced bankruptcy like those countries. Fortunately, these states have an umbrella in the form of a Central government. If such a situation continues for long, it would impact the nation as a whole,

which is also facing some structural difficulties that needed correction. According to the revised estimate, the debt-GSDP of Punjab was the highest at 53.3 per cent, followed by Rajasthan at 39.5 per cent, Bihar 38.6 per cent, Kerala 37 per cent and West Bengal 34.4 per cent. According to various scenarios built in the RBI report, if contingent liabilities are fully invoked, Rajasthan will see an additional 8.6 per cent debt in relation to GSDP, followed by Punjab (5.3 per cent), Kerala (3.9 per cent), Bihar (3.4 per cent) and West Bengal (0.9 per cent). The N.K. Singh-led finance commission and the Fiscal Responsibility and Budget Management Committee had suggested a debtGSDP ceiling of 20 per cent to states. Financial restructuring or bailouts to ailing state discoms will have a severe impact on the debt-GSDP ratios, the report said. Before the pandemic, the combined gross fiscal deficit of state governments remained at a modest 2.5 per cent, much lower than FRBM ceiling of 3 per cent for states. This is not a happy situation. The Centre also needs some serious economic policy reforms like massive efforts to push demand, remove supply constraints and pumping in huge investments in infrastructure development to kick-start the economy

as well as providing jobs to millions of people, particularly in rural areas. No one is asking Prime Minister Narendra Modi about his 2014 promise of putting Rs 15 lakh in the bank accounts of each and every Indian by bringing back the ill-gotten money stashed abroad. At that time, the estimate was $1.4 trillion. Now, as per some sources, it stands at $2 trillion. Already, there are reports of asset bubbles developing in many advanced economies. China too is not doing well. There are reports of many Chinese banks having huge and unsustainable levels of non-performing assets. Many smaller Chinese banks at district level are already moving towards bankruptcy. So far, the Chinese government has been able to prevent the imminent implosion of the banking system because of its huge foreign exchange reserves at over $3 trillion and strong macroeconomic fundamentals. But going forward, the Chinese economy too faces a bumpy road ahead. So, overall it is not a happy global economic situation. India might be the fastest growing economy at the moment, but going forward, things may change for the worse. Immediate and out-of-the-box correctives are needed to steer the country’s economy out of the woods. KR Sudhaman (As published in National Herald)

Growing trend: More Indians giving away their citizenship

ecent trend shows that more and more Indians are giving away their Indian citizenship. Citizenship is something which is considered by every citizen in this case Indian as so precious having immense value. Over and above, Indian citizens cherish as long as they live and only as the last resort if and when all options and avenues are closed. Hence, a citizen finally opts to give away his/ her citizenship having considered all angles. In the decision-making processes they would have employed rigorous scrutiny and are careful consideration. Those who prefer to give away their citizenship that involves though many aspects, but out of them one could probably be central and crucial that triggers the decision-making processes to finality. A few days ago, in the winter session of the parliament the union minister of state for home J Nityanand Rai in a written reply to a question in Lok Sabha said that a total of 1,63, 370 Indian nationals renounced their citizenship in 2021. In 2020, the number had fallen to just 85, 248 from 1,44,217 in 2019, the highest until then. It is unbelievable that a record 1,63, 370 Indian nationals had decided to renounced

E

per cent. Nomura has forecast a low of 4.7 per cent growth for the Indian economy in 2023, which may be a slight exaggeration, but it does indicate that all is not well for the Indian economy, with recession expected even in some of the advanced economies. The Chinese economy too is not doing well, which could severely impact the sliding global economy adversely. India may not go Sri Lanka or Pakistan’s way as the economy is quite large and some of the developed states are doing reasonably well. But there are warning bells as according to a recent Reserve Bank of India report, 10 states in India have unsustainable levels of debt and high fiscal deficit. This is dangerous. Each state is bigger than Sri Lanka and some of them are as big as Pakistan. RBI has flagged the issue saying fiscal risks seem moving sub-national. Some of the states, particularly Punjab, Rajasthan and Bihar spend 90 per cent of the revenue they earn on expenditures like salaries, debt servicing and other revenue expenditures. Hence, there is very little money left for developmental activities and capital expenditure. The other states spend more than 80 per cent of their revenue on routine expenditures, not leaving much money for capital formation. The days are not far off when they may have to start borrowing to meet their revenue

their citizenship in 2021 that raises serious questions. Prior to getting into the reasons for their renunciation of Indian citizenship and nationality, what are their preferred destination as they reveal multiple aspects along with the key reason. The data reveals that the highest number of applications that preferred to renounce Indian citizenship in favor of countries such as the United States of America with 78, 284, followed by Australia with 23,533, Canada with 21,549, then the United Kingdom with 14,637 and Italy with 5,986. Along with these countries New Zealand (2,643) and Singapore (2516) have also been gaining preference for India seeking nationalities. The minister of state for home did not disclose the reasons for the record number of Indian renouncing the Indian citizenship in preference to foreign nationality with a passing reference: “for reasons personal to them.” Nonetheless, it is important to look into the matter as there could be some pivotal reasons India unlike other countries does not allow dual citizenship. And those who want to embrace foreign citizenship will have to renounce Indian citizenship.

And the way to surrendering Indian citizenship is to once for all give away the Indian passport. Those who prefer or opt for other passports attach added value or more weightage to the preferred passport that indicates better prospects and status than the country in which they were born and grown. Therefore, there’s no two-ways of going about it – surrendering/renouncing as against opting and preferred – from the country born and brought up to the country preferred and destined. The choice those who want to renounce Indian nationality in preference to a foreign nationality is hard that runs deep-down intensely which is intriguing. It is bewildering to note that over 3.92 lakh Indians gave up their citizenship in the last three years. The reasons are diverse that could perhaps be examined, analyzed and evaluated. To start with, it is important to know which age group is keen seeking citizenship in another country. It is not the age-group between 18-30 that by and large prefer to go overseas for education. It is the middle-age segment which is professional and entrepreneurial class wants to quit India for better prospectus. Exodus

of this magnitude and gravity is unprecedent. Why should those with professional skills immigrate to other countries? Should this phenomenon be brushed aside or undermined? Those in the ruling dispensation might offer diverse reasons that are elusive, but what is important is to seriously take the ground reality in which we live. The social and political templates echo horrendous levels of injustices and inequalities. Hate speech and hate killings have become the order of the day. Duplicity for rule of law and heckling of free-speech are new normal. FIRs against posts that questions or criticizes the dispensation of its policies. In view of the volatile and toxic atmosphere prevailing in the country investors do not want to take risks. As long as current vicious political and virulent social climate persists, those who have invested in this country would apparently be prompted to relocate their businesses to other countries where there will be conducive social atmosphere and political stability. Those with innovative capacity and super-skilled professionals are leaving the country for their professional growth along with their families.

This would eventually augment and escalate brain-drain. They think and argue that there is no future for them and their children in India. For innovation and ‘make in India’, India by all means will have this class of people who are endowed with innovation skills and entrepreneurial capabilities. Over and above, in the wake of ‘brain drain’ is like one-way traffic, if it is not contained with checks and balances, India would soon become not “innovative hub”, but “imitator portal” thereby occupying the dubious distinction not “made in India”, but “made for India. Therefore, when we consider the future of India, future of our children and grandchildren, the current dispensation at the Centre should objectively take stock of the situation – why there’s exodus of this class. Those who have been denouncing India citizenship by surrendering their Indian passports does comprise of cross-sections of the India society. Like the value of Indian rupee nose-diving every day, Indian passport should not lose its unique position. Dr. I. John Mohan Razu Professor of Social Ethics

aster n Nagaland is a cluster of 7 major tribes of Nagaland visa-vis Chang, Khiamniungan, Konyak, Phom, Sangtam, Tikhir and Yimkhiung, with the formation of Naga Hill Tuensang Area (NHTA) erstwhile Tuensang Frontier Division in the year 1957 and Nagaland State coming into being in the year 1963 in consonance with two entities, wherein a solemn affirmation was concord between and vouched to share equated opportunities in all the Governmental aspects henceforth. It is to note that with the arrival of the British East India Company in the early 19th century followed by British raj, it dominated the whole of the South Asia including Naga Hill but the land and the people of Eastern Nagas presently (Tuensang, Mon, Longleng, Kiphire, Noklak, Shamator) were free from any form of the colonial rule and in contrary in the quest for formation of the state of Nagaland, the Eastern Naga too have equally contributed and sacrifice to build the larger Nagaland, which too is enshrined and evident in the 16th point agreement and

article 371(A) of the Indian Constitution. Albeit the affirmation, the vouch for equated share remained futile till today and there has been an infinite disparity in orchestrating/ allocating the shares despite the constitutional rights enshrined in Article 371(2) (b) of the Indian constitution stating where any money that is provided by the government of India to the government of Nagaland to meet the requirement of the state of Nagaland as a whole, the governor shall in his discretion arrange for an equitable allocation of that money between the Tuensang District and the rest of the state. The very provision which was to cater and mitigate with the best ulterior motive to bring about the long-lasting peace, prosperity and development in the state was never maintained in letter and spirit by Nagaland state machineries. India is the largest democratic country in the world and the constitution of India ensures all its citizens the right to Justice (Socially, Economically and politically)/ Equality (of all the status and of opportunity; and to promote among them all)/

Fraternity (assuring the dignity of the individual and the unity of the nation). The attitude maintained by today’s Nagaland state government is completely a mockery to the preamble of the constitution as the very gesture jeopardize the idea of Fraternity, Equality and Justice; radically the root for all this is biasness and Oligarchy. In the midst of today’s contemporary society flourishing with rapid globalization with intense advancement in various activities of lives, the land of Eastern Nagaland remained a remote barren land with socially and economically backward despite the surplus inbound of capital invested by the central government in order to develop the Eastern region. There is no plausible sign of development because the government of today despite being apprehensive has never shown keen interest to address the needs of the people and bid to felicitate the needs despite persistent hues and cries over the issues now and then. The Eastern most region of Nagaland state today hems in with most deplorable road condition, lack of human resource developments

and infrastructure which had potentially contributed towards the economic and social backwardness of the region. The clandestine and arbitrary selfish motives of the government machineries in orchestrating and allocating the schemes and funds for development of state vis-à-vis the development project as a whole allocation done for the Eastern Nagaland is just a speck and it doesn’t even synchronize the allocation done to one district. Various departments in Nagaland are engulfed with numerous projected schemes, programs and developmental projects to uplift the whole lot of Nagaland state socially, economically and developmentally; but it is flabbergasted to encounter that there has been a lot of disparity in implementing the same. The question here is, who is sole responsible for disproportional discrepancies in developmental activities? The federation is very much aware of the 5 years or more developmental activities pursued under the present government within the ambit of Eastern Nagaland and Nagaland; wherein the lion shares are been enjoyed by

the few sections of the society which is crystal clear and evident by whole lot of Nagas in general. Nagaland has more than 80 departments and the below mentioned are some micro evident facts and figures which is a classic example, in which manner the eastern areas and people are being deprived at large. 1. PMJVK under Ministry Of Minority Affairs, the Eastern Naga areas were allocated arguably with just 11.95 cr out of 279.72 cr. 2. List of priorities projects under North-Eastern Council (NEC) 2022-23 out of 30 projects under the state, an estimated cost of (normal 58.11 cr, Projection 120 cr) only a lone project, an estimated cost of 3.50 cr was earmarked for Eastern Nagaland. 3. Ministry Of Tribal Affairs (SCA to TSS Division) funds under special assistance to Tribal Sub-Scheme During 2020-21 (creation for capital asset-non recurring), out of total amounting Rs. 9,09,30,000 for 17 projects, only Rs. 1.5 cr was allocated for Eastern Nagaland. The hoodwink and biased gesture is a clear man-

ifestation of lackadaisical and step motherly treatment towards Eastern Nagaland. Such attitude was maintained since the inception of the state. the intensity of suppression and deprivation that the denizens of Eastern Nagaland had faced since time immemorial, and the excruciating pains inflicted upon are ineffable despite state machineries being very much cognizant of the horrendous conditions of the area, it still continues to deprive without hesitation. In the light of the above discrepancies, the federation strongly objects over the biased distribution of funds as corroborated in the recent selection process. Hence, the Federation vehemently demands that all the proposed/ approved projects under existing departments of Nagaland be reviewed and allocate with equity in the larger interest of the Nagas. The trend of inclining towards a section of people/areas in the process of development will only jeopardize the very fabric of Naga integration in the near future. case will not hold in a court. Manish is a hardcore honest man and he will walk free,” he said. Kejriwal also said AAP leaders are not afraid of going to jail as they have done no wrong. At a press briefing, AAP chief spokesperson Saurabh Bhardwaj alleged that the CBI probe was recommended by the LG at the behest of the BJP-led Centre to implicate Sisodia in a fake case and keep the Kejriwal-led party at bay in the upcoming Assembly polls.

He also alleged that the Centre has been making efforts to “somehow” implicate all the ministers in the Delhi government in fake cases as Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scared of the growing popularity of the AAP and Kejriwal. “The Centre will try to implicate more of our ministers. It has asked officials to find out anything, true or false, and launch a probe so that the AAP can be kept confined to Delhi and Punjab,” Bhardwaj said replying to a question.

The organisation did not hoist the tricolour at its headquarters in Nagpur for 52 years and “disrespected” the tricolour continuously, he alleged. “Today, people who have come out of the same organization are telling the history of the tricolour, are planning a ‘Har Ghar Tiranga’ campaign,” Gandhi said. “These people steeped in propaganda should just answer a few questions -Why did RSS not hoist the tricolour at its headquarters for 52 years? Why is the livelihood of those who make the national flag out of khadi being destroyed? Why was the import of machine-made, polyester flags allowed from China?” the former Congress chief said in his post.

T H I RU VA N A N T H A PURAM, JUL 22 (PTI): A 35-year-old man, who came to Kerala from the UAE earlier this month, has tested positive for monkeypox, making him the third case of the virus from the country as well as the state. Health Minister Veena George said the Malappuram native arrived in the southern state on July 6 and had fever since July 13. He was undergoing treatment at the Manjeri Medical College there and his health condition is stable, she said. The minister also said all those who were in close contact with the patient are being closely monitored and their health condition is also stable. H o w e v e r, G e o r g e made it clear that there was no need to panic over the disease as testing and surveillance have been intensified across the state. “Everybody should be aware about the disease... isolation facilities have been arranged in all districts. Surveillance has been intensified after setting up help desks in airports,” she said after a high level meeting of health department officials here. The minister also directed to ensure that all health workers in the state are trained to deal with the disease.

NEW DELHI, JUL 22 (PTI): The Supreme Court on Friday closed the hearing on pleas seeking relief including the re-constitution of a commission to inquire into the encounter of gangster Vikas Dubey and others and directed the Uttar Pradesh government to act upon the recommendations of the panel. A bench headed by Chief Justice N V Ramana also directed that the report of the three-member inquiry panel headed by Justice (retd) B S Chauhan of the apex court be put in the public domain and uploaded on its website. The bench, also comprising Justices Krishan Murari and Hima Kohli, agreed to the submissions of the Uttar Pradesh government that under the Commissions of Inquiry Act, 1952, the panel has run its course, its report has been filed and laid on the floor of the assembly and it cannot be appealed or assailed as happened in the case of a judgement. “Now the inquiry commission has submitted its report. The counsel appearing for the state says that the

report of the inquiry was placed on the floor of the House for further action... and if the (PIL) petitioners are still aggrieved then the course is to pursue the remedy under the law. “We direct the state government to take appropriate action as per the recommendations given by the inquiry commission. The copy of the report be kept in the public domain and on the SC website. With the above observations, the writ (petitions) are closed,” the apex court said in its order. The Justice Chauhan panel, in its report, had said there is no suspicion or doubt about the police version of the killing of gangster Dubey and other members of his gang in encounters after the Bikru ambush in Kanpur in July 2020 as nobody from the public or the media came to contradict the police claim and no evidence was filed in rebuttal. The bench was hearing as many as four PILs, including the first one filed by Mumbai-based lawyer Ghanshyam Upadhyay who had sought relief including re-constitution of

the inquiry commission to inquire into the encounter of the gangster and his associates. An independent court-monitored probe was also sought in pleas. At the outset, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta and senior advocate Harish Salve, appearing for the state government, said that the inquiry panel has filed its report which has been tabled on the floor of the house, and hence the matters here should be closed. “This matter should be closed. There were allegations and counter allegations ...A three-member inquiry committee was constituted and they have rendered a report. Everybody cannot be happy with what everyone says,” Salve said. “The important point is that this is the report of the Commission of Inquiry and you cannot appeal this to a court. Your Lordship wanted a thorough enquiry and now the inquiry is over. And, if somebody says a crime has been committed then he will have to go to court. The inquiry commission report has run its course,” he said.

The Cong ress had fielded Lobo - its only woman legislator in the state - against De Souza of the ruling party. Two MLAs of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and the lone MLA of the Revolutionary Goans Party (RGP) - both belonging to the opposition benches - abstained from voting. AAP legislators had earlier in the day said that they had no idea whom the opposition has fielded as its candidate for the post. Before the election, the Congress had admitted that the opposition camp does not have enough strength to win the post, but also maintained that “anything can happen during voting”. Assembly Speaker Ramesh Tawadkar and others congratulated De Souza on his win. NEW DELHI, JUL 22 (PTI): In an apparent swipe at Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Friday said the RSS “did not hoist the tricolour at its headquarters for 52 years” and people coming from that organisation are now talking about the tricolour’s history and planning ‘Har Ghar Tiranga’ campaign. His attack came hours after Prime Minister Modi appealed to people to strengthen the ‘Har Ghar Tiranga’ movement by hoisting or displaying the national flag in their homes between August 13-15. In a series of tweets, Modi said this movement will “deepen our connect with the tricolour” and noted that it was on July 22 in 1947 that the national flag was adopted. In a Facebook post in Hindi, Gandhi said the saffron colour in the tricolour symbolizes courage and sacrifice, white symbolizes truth and purity and green is considered a symbol of prosperity. “The 24 spokes of Ashoka Chakra made on white colour also have a special meaning, these spokes represent the 24 qualities of a human being. According to sources, the LG has found “substantive indications” of “financial quid pro quo” at the “top political level”, wherein the excise minister “took and got executed major decisions in violation of statutory provisions” and notified the excise policy that had “huge financial implications”.

NEW DELHI, JUL 22 (PTI): Droupadi Murmu being elected as India’s first tribal president is a “new epoch” in the history that needs to be “scripted in golden letters”, Union Culture Minister G Kishan Reddy said on Friday. On Thursday, the former Jharkhand governor and the BJP-led NDA’s presidential candidate, who found many other backers along her campaign trail, won by an overwhelming margin against opposition’s pick Yashwant Sinha. On Friday, the Culture Ministry tweeted to greet 64-year-old Murmu on her triumph, who started public life as a councillor in Odisha and will now be India’s 15th president, taking over from Ram Nath Kovind. “A historical moment for India! Smt. Droupadi Murmu is elected as the new President of India. Not only is she the first president from the Tribal community, she is also the first Indian President to

He, however, asserted that nothing will come of it and people will eventually understand everything and wonder why Modi is after AAP leaders. Referring to the arrest of Sateyndar Jain by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in a money-laundering case, Bhardwaj alleged that the Centre has been making efforts to “somehow” implicate the ministers in the Delhi government in fake cases since the AAP’s stupendous victory in the Punjab Assembly polls earlier this year. “We have been anticipating that after Jain, the Centre will try to implicate Sisodia also,” he said. “This is happening because the growing popularity of Arvind Kejriwal across the country has scared the Centre and Prime Minister Narendra Modi,” Bhardwaj said. He added that the Centre is “jealous” of Kejriwal’s popularity.

NEW DELHI, JUL 22 (PTI): Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal claimed on Friday that his deputy Manish Sisodia will be framed in a “fake case” by the CBI and arrested in a few days. His remarks came after Delhi Lieutenant Governor (LG) V K Saxena recommended a probe by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) into the Delhi Excise Policy, 2021-22 over alleged violations of rules and procedural lapses. Sisodia heads the excise department of the Delhi government. At an online press briefing, Kejriwal also said he has known Sisodia for 22 years and he is a “hardcore honest” man. “I came to know that a case has been sent to the CBI against Manish Sisodia and the agency is going to arrest him in a few days. It is a completely fake case. There is not even an iota of truth in this case,” the national convenor of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) said. “This

In his keynote address, INDEF NER president Pura Tupe highlighted the activities of the federation. He regretted that there had been continuous erosion in the status and career prospects of engineers in India since independence. He said the role of engineers and technocrats in nation building had been recognised time and again by one and all. He mentioned that bureaucracy should work as a facilitator for advancement of scientific and technological development and in no way should be allowed to dominate over the professionals.

Tupe however said he was shocked to observed that engineering services all over the country were lagging behind the civil services in respect of status, pay structure and carrier progression. Towards this, he claimed that INDEF was trying to highlight its three-point demands, which included heading and manning of technical departments by technical personnel, removal of disparity in carrier avenues of engineers vis-a-vis administrative services and constitution of Engineering Commission. Engineers-in-chief, chief engineers and engineers from the eight Northeastern States are participating in the two-day event.

Das said in the upcoming policy, MPC will review the inflation projection of 6.7 per cent for FY 2023, announced in the June policy as there is softening of retail inflation. “As it would appear, inflation appears to have peaked. Please mind my words, it appears to have peaked and it has moderated from 7.8 per cent to 7.04 per cent, and now it is 7 per cent,” Das said. On the macroeconomic situation, the governor said the Indian economy remains relatively better placed, drawing strength from its macroeconomic fundamentals. The financial system is well-capitalised, asset quality indicators have improved, balance sheets are stronger, and banks have returned to profitability. There is a healthy pickup in credit demand and the external sector is well-buffered to withstand the ongoing terms of trade shocks and the portfolio outflows, he added.

The governor said any decision of RBI with regard to liquidity and policy rates always takes into consideration the kind of impact it is going to have on growth and revival of economic activity. However, in sequence of priorities, RBI’s focus currently is on inflation followed by growth, Das said. Speaking on the flexible inflation targeting framework, Das said the regime has worked very well for the country. Under the flexible in-

He also said higher inflation leads to negative interest rates which will act as a big disincentive to savers and have an impact on the entire investment climate of any country. He said the crisis such as Covid and the current war in Europe have produced a lot of consequences on the real sector, and hence having an inflation target and trying to achieve it ensures that the aspect of financial stability is maintained not only in India but the world over. “Therefore, I feel that the (inflation targeting) framework has worked well and needs to continue. My personal opinion and also it is the opinion of all of us in the RBI that let us not shift the goal post to suit our convenience because the larger requirement of the economy and the financial sector is to have such a

RBI will ensure soft landing of economy: Das

MUMBAI, JUL 22 (PTI): Reserve Bank of India Governor Shaktikanta Das on Friday said the central bank will ensure that the economy has a soft landing wherein inflation is closer to 4 per cent, with minimal impact on growth. Das said retail inflation appears to have peaked and the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) in its upcoming meeting in August will review the inflation projection of 6.7 per cent for the fiscal 2022-23. “Our endeavour shall be to ensure a soft landing for our economy where inflation is brought down to closer to the target of 4 per cent over a period of time. At the same time, the growth sacrifice is also within manageable limits,” the governor said at a banking conclave organised by Bank of Baroda. The decision to evict the anti-government protesters came a day after Ranil Wickremesinghe was sworn in as president after ex-president Rajapaksa fled the country last week. KYIV, JUL 22 (AP): Ukrainian emergency workers recovered three bodies from a school hit by a Russian strike in the east of the country, officials said Friday, as attacks continued in several parts of the nation. The reported casualties follow a barrage Thursday on a densely populated area of Ukraine’s secondlargest city, Kharkiv, that killed at least three people and wounded 23 others. In a rare sign of light, the signing was expected Friday of an accord that would allow Ukraine to resume its shipments of grain across the Black Sea and Russia to export grain and fertilizers. Beyond that, however, there was no indication of relief from the grinding war. Russia this week has reiterated its plans to seize territories beyond eastern Ukraine, where the Russian military has spent months trying to conquer the Donbas region. The Ukrainian president’s office said that in Kramatorsk, in Donetsk province, Russian shelling destroyed a school and damaged 85 residential buildings. Ukraine’s state emergencies agency said it has completed work at the school, which was hit on

Explosions, gunfire at a military base in Mali

BAMAKO (MALI), JUL 22 (AP): Explosions and gunfire were heard early on Friday morning in the area of the Kati military base on the outskirts of Mali’s capital city Bamako, according to local residents, in a suspected attack by Islamic extremists. The military has cordoned off the roads to Kati, about 15 kilometers northwest of Bamako.

new president, holding him partly responsible for the country’s unprecedented economic and political crisis. The protesters, who had been camping at the Secretariat’s gate since April 9 when they started their antigovernment protest which resulted in Rajapaksa’s resignation as president last week, posted on social media on Thursday that they were planning to end their protest by 2 pm on Friday. “There was a debate that we should respect the Constitution and stop this protest,” said a spokesman of the group. However, the main protest group which blocked entry to the President’s Office since April 9, said they would continue their struggle till Wickremesinghe resigned. the extremists have moved into central Mali. In recent weeks that have moved closer to the capital. Last week gunmen attacked an army checkpoint about 60 kilometers outside Bamako, killing at least six people and wounding several others, officials said. No group has claimed responsibility for the attack, but it appears to be by the al-Qaida-linked rebel group

known as JNIM that has carried out several other attacks around Bamako. The attacks show “how the al-Qaida affiliate Jama’at Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin continues to expand its operations outside its traditional strongholds in norther n and central Mali,” said Héni Nsaibia, a senior researcher at The Armed Conflict Location and Event Data Project. “As in other Sahelian countries such as Burkina Faso and Niger ... major cities including the capitals themselves, are increasingly surrounded by a steady spread of Islamist militancy that poses an ever-increasing risk and challenge to the security environment.” Mali has struggled to contain an Islamic extremist insurgency since 2012. Extremist rebels were forced from power in Mali’s northern cities with the help of a French-led military operation, but they regrouped in the desert and began attacking the Malian army and its allies. Insecurity has worsened with attacks in the northern and central regions.

The U.S. said it has supplied 12 HIMARS systems and will deliver four more. The claims could not be independently verified. The Ukrainian military has used HIMARS, which have a higher range and better precision compared with similar Sovietera systems in the Russian and Ukrainian inventory,

Seven Russian missiles hit the small town of Apostolove in the Dnipro region, wounding 18 residents. CONDOLENCE MESSAGE

The Nagaland Economics & Statistics Service Association (NESSA) is deeply pained and saddened to learn about the demise of one of its esteemed bonafide members Late Hekato Thonger, Economics & Statistics Officer on 21st July 2022 at Guwahati. “favorable” and the benefits of its use during the ongoing monkeypox outbreak outweighed the risks, noting mostly mild to moderate side effects. The vaccine, known as Imvanex in Europe but sold as Jynneos in the United States, was already cleared for use against monkeypox by American regulators. Of the more than 15,000 monkeypox cases reported worldwide, nearly 70% are in Europe, with more than 30 countries across the continent affected. Doses of the Bavarian Nordic vaccine are extremely limited. Most of the world’s supply has already been bought by countries and regions including Britain, Canada, the EU and the U.S. None have gone to Africa, where a more severe version of monkeypox has killed dozens of people. No monkeypox deaths have been reported in rich countries.

2022- ODI is dying a slow death: Khawaja Djokovic to join ‘big three’ for Laver Cup Ranji23Trophy to start in

LO N D O N, J U L 2 2 (IANS): It will be a treat for fans to watch the ‘Big Four’ of tennis -- Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer and Andy Murray -- play together in the same team as they have joined forces to represent Team Europe for the first

time in Laver Cup history. As per ATP, Djokovic has announced his commitment to the event, with Nadal, Federer and Murray already confirmed to participate in the competition’s fifth edition, scheduled to be held in September, 2022.

The Serbian is set for his second Laver Cup appearance and will be seeking his first match wins in the competition. Djokovic was a part of Team Europe’s winning 2018 side, but lost two Match Tie-breaks -- one in singles and one in doubles

Tejaswin cleared to compete at CWG

Tejaswin Shankar

NEW DELHI, JUL 22 (AGENCIES): High jumper Tejaswin Shankar has been cleared to compete at the upcoming Commonwealth Games (CWG) in Birmingham by the organisers on Friday. According to Sportstar report, the Birmingham CWG organisers had initially rejected Shankar’s late entry but the IOA has now got confirmation from the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) and organisers about acceptance of his entry after a Delegate Registration Meeting (DRM), a report from PTI read. “Mr Tejaswin Shankar’s entry has been approved by the CGF and accordingly accepted by the

Sports Entry Department of Commonwealth Games Birmingham 2022 during the DRM,” a communication from the IOA to AFI, said. Tejaswin was roped in as a replacement for Arokia Rajiv (4x400 relay) in India’s athletics contingent for the Games by the Athletics Federation of India (AFI) in early July. AFI’s request was, however, struck down by the CWG Working Committee the following day citing that only a like-to-like replacement is permissible for the tournament. “The CGF in consultation with the relevant International Federation and CGF Medical Commission may approve a permanent replacement of an athlete by

another eligible athlete only in the same sport and discipline and event(s) where there are extenuating/extraordinary circumstances (e.g., medical circumstances, Anti-Doping rule violations and appeals) that may prevent the participation of an athlete in Birmingham 2022,” the CWG organisers had said on IOA’s request for Tejaswin’s inclusion. The 23-year-old national record holder was earlier denied a spot in India’s athletics squad by AFI after he failed to attend the Inter-State Championships in Chennai in June despite meeting qualification standards. Tejaswin opted to compete in his final NCAA track and field outdoor championships – the premier college athletics competition in the USA. The organisers have also added quarter-miler M V Jilna was also re-included in the squad. Jilna, who was named in the initial 37-member Indian athletics team as a 4x100m relay runner by the AFI was withdrawn to stick to 36 athletes as allotted by the IOA.

December: BCCI

NEW DELHI, JUL 22 (AGENCIES): The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has decided to conduct a full-fledged domestic season this time around with the Ranji Trophy beginning in December. According to Sportstar report, the premier domestic tournament is expected to be played between December 13 and February 28, 2022. While there will be four elite groups comprising eight teams each, the plate group will have six teams. There will be seven matches per team in the league stage of the elite group, while plate groups will have five league matches each. Group-toppers from all the elite groups will be directly qualifying for the quarterfinals, while the second placed teams from all four groups will be ranked amongst them as 5-8 based on points, wins, NRR, quotient - whichever is applicable . The eighth ranked team will play against Plate Group winners in pre-quarterfinals.

SYDNEY, JUL 22 (PTI): Australian Test opener Usman Khawaja believes ODI cricket is witnessing a slow death because of the proliferation of T20 leagues around the world and a hectic international calender. Khawaja is the latest cricketer to join the debate over the existence of 50over cricket after England superstar Ben Stokes on Monday stunned the cricketing world by announcing his sudden retirement from ODI cricket at the age of 31. Calling playing three formats as “unsustainable” for him, Stokes, who is also England’s Test captain, said cricketers “are not like cars” and there is “too much cricket rammed in”. “I think personally one-day cricket is dying a slow death,” Khawaja, who has represented Australia in 40 ODIs since making his debut in the format in 2013, told reporters in Brisbane on Friday. “ T h e r e ’s s t i l l t h e World Cup, which I think is really fun and it’s enjoyable to watch, but other than that, even myself person-

ally, I’m probably not into one-day cricket as much either.” Khawaja argued that 50-over format has lost its relevance, of late, as the T20 World Cup in knocking on the doors. “Right now it feels like it’s not really that important because of the T20 World Cup,” Khawaja said. “Something has to give, because you can’t have all three formats all together playing all the games; you’re going to have to decide and choose.” However, the 35-year-old was of the opinion that despite a choc-a-bloc international calendar, Test cricket will continue to remain the pinnacle of the sport.

“ Yo u ’ ve g o t Te s t cricket, which is the pinnacle, you’ve got T20 cricket which obviously has leagues around the world, great entertainment, everyone loves it, and then there’s one-day cricket, and I feel like that’s probably the third ranked out of all of them,” he said. Khawaja feels while it is not impossible for any cricketer to be a three-format player, it is gradually becoming quite exhausting for all and sundry. “Not impossible, very tough. So much travelling. If you’re playing all three forms of the game, you’re not at home at all really,” he said.

-- in his only matches. He teamed with Federer in doubles, but they fell to Team World’s Kevin Anderson and Jack Sock. “Laver Cup is the only competition where you can have all the big rivals, the ‘Big Three’, ‘Big Four’ players joining in the same team,” Djokovic said at Wimbledon, where he won his 21st Grand Slam title earlier this month. “Of course, it is a very different and exciting concept for us players, but also for the fans around the world,’’ he added. Captain Bjorn Borg’s Team Europe has reigned supreme since the inaugural Laver Cup in 2017, lifting the trophy at all four of the event’s previous editions. The 2022 Laver Cup will be held from September 23-25 at The O2 Arena. Felix Auger-Aliassime, Taylor Fritz and Diego Schwartzman have committed to represent Team World alongside captain John McEnroe.

Placed in Group A at Hayward Field, Neeraj, the reigning Olympic champion, recorded an 88.39m throw in his first attempt to breach the qualifying mark and didn’t take his second and third attempts on Thursday. Notably, the qualifying cut for the Oregon 2022 men’s javelin throw competition was set at 83.50m or the 12 best performers. Neeraj, who set a national record of 89.94 metres en route to a silver medal at

the Stockholm Diamond League earlier this year, set the tone in Group A with an 88.39 metre throw in his very first attempt. This was the third-best throw Neeraj Chopra has recorded in his career. The Tokyo Olympics champion had failed to get past the qualifying round at the 2017 Worlds in London, his debut World Championships. He missed the 2019 World Championships in Doha due to an injury. Tokyo silver medallist Jakub Vadlejch was the only other javelin thrower in Group A to breach the

qualifying mark with an 85.23-metre effort, which also came in his first throw. Later in the day, Neeraj’s compatriot Rohit Yadav also joined the reigning Olympic champion in the final from Group B. With a best throw of 80.42m, Rohit finished sixth in his group and 11th overall to make the 12-man final field. Before Neeraj and Rohit, Davinder Singh Kang was the only Indian male javelin thrower to qualify for a World Championships javelin final. Kang finished 12th at London 2017.

Eldhose Paul became the first Indian to qualify for the triple jump final at the World Championships with an effort of 16.68m. He finished sixth in Group A qualification round and 12th overall to make the cut for Sunday’s final (6:50am IST). The 25-year-old Paul, who reached here just a few days ago due to visa issues, has a season’s and personal best of 16.99m which he had recorded while winning gold in the Federation Cup in April. The two other Indians, Praveen Chithravel and Abdulla Aboobacker failed to make it to the finals after best jumps of 16.49m and 16.45m respectively. Chitravel finished eighth in Group A and 17th overall while Aboobacker ended at 10th in Group B and 19th overall. Those who cleared 17.05m or the 12 best performers across two qualification round groups qualify for the finals.

India’s captain Shikhar Dhawan, right, and Shubman Gill knock to celebrate a fifty runs partnership against West Indies on Friday. (AP/PTI)

PORT OF SPAIN, JUL 22 (PTI): Shubmam Gill made a classy 64 in his ODI comeback while skipper Shikhar Dhawan missed out on a hundred by three runs before the West Indies restricted India to 308 for seven in the series opener here on Friday. Gill, playing his first ODI since December 2020, played some sublime strokes in his 52-ball knock while Dhawan (97 of 99 balls) took his time before changing gears. Shreyas Iyer, who has had his troubles of late with the short ball, was back amongst the runs with a fluent 54 off 57 balls. The opening duo of Gill and Dhawan shared an 119-run stand off 106 balls before the former was run out in the 18th over against

the run of play. Gill, one of the most watchable batters when in full flow, was very comfortable against the fast bowlers. Gill hooked Alzarri Joseph for a six before he delighted the crowd with a perfectly placed punch off the back foot for a boundary. He was equally attractive playing the cover drives when the ball was pitched up. His innings comprised six fours and couple of sixes. It took a brilliant direct hit from West Indies captain Nicholas Pooran to dismiss him. It was Gill’s maiden ODI fifty in what was his fourth game. Dhawan, who only plays one format and had a lean run in England, paced his innings well with Gill

going strong at the other end. The southpaw collected 10 fours and three sixes. His go-to-shot was the slog sweep off left-arm spinner Gudakesh Motie. The other left-arm spinner Akeal Hosein impressed by getting the ball to turn sharply. India were set for a 350-plus score but Dhawan’s dismissal for the seventh time in the 90s led to a middle-order collapse with the visitors reduced to 252 for five from 213 for one. Sanju Samson (12) squandered a good opportunity to make an impact while Suryakumar Yadav (13) fell to a loose shot. Deepak Hooda (27) and Axar Patel (21) took India past 300 with a 42run stand for the sixth wicket.

Nunez scores 4 as Liverpool hammer Leipzig 5-0

Nunez poked home his third and Liverpool’s fourth after a drag back from Harvey Elliott.

LO N D O N, J U L 2 2 (AGENCIES): Liverpool’s club-record £85 million signing Darwin Nunez opened his account for his new side by scoring four second-half goals to help the Reds thrash RB Leipzig 5-0 in a preseason friendly at the Red Bull Arena. Nunez, who moved to Anfield from Benfica earlier this summer, started the game

on the bench with Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp opting to field a strong-looking starting line-up as he continued preparations ahead of the new campaign, according to Skysport report. However, after Mohamed Salah had given his team a half-time lead with a well-taken early finish, it became the Nunez show after the interval, with the

Uruguay striker netting a 20-minute hat-trick, before rounding off a memorable game with a last-minute goal as the visitors cruised to a comfortable victory. With the new Premier League season now just over a fortnight away and a showdown with champions Manchester City in the Community Shield on the horizon, Klopp started with

what could be considered his first-choice XI in Germany and it paid dividends as his players produced a polished display. With fitness levels improving with each outing, this looked more like the Liverpool team we saw in their record-breaking campaign last season than the side that were humbled 4-0 by rivals Manchester United in Bangkok ten days ago. On it from the off, the visitors led after just eight minutes as Leipzig made a mess of clearing the ball, allowing Roberto Firmino’s clever flick to slip Salah in on goal, with the forward making no mistake with a cool side-footed finish into the bottom left-hand corner of the goal. Both sides had chances to add to the first-half scoring, with Adrian - covering for the injured Alisson - making a smart reaction stop to deny Christoper Nkunku on the stroke of half-time, before the introduction of Nunez as the central striker for Firmino at the break.
