14 Tribal Hohos reject any split within Naga political groups

DIMAPUR, OCT 22 (NPN): Close on the heels of speculations of an imminent split in a Naga Political Group (NPG) due to rift among its leadership, the 14 Tribal Hobos of Nagaland, Friday categorically stated that they will not tolerate splits within various factions of Naga Political Groups (NPGs). The 14 Tribal Hohos, in a statement through their media cell, reminded that when unity was the call of the day, any further split or differences must not take place among the factions. The 14 Tribal Hohos also declared that they would not allow new groups to function within their respective jurisdictions. While accepting the fact that there could always be some differences

of opinion among the negotiating parties, the hohos however reiterated that such should not sabotage the negotiation with Government of India (GoI) for an early solution.

Tribes will bar any new faction within their jurisdiction In their statement, the 14 Tribal Hohos cautioned that “if peaceful settlement could not be implemented at the earliest, the Naga youths and our younger generation will be doom(ed) to a very bleak future.” Further the Hohos also demanded that all the NPG factions should will-

ingly join the negotiating table by taking advantage of the recent political development in Nagaland in which all political parties had come together to pave the way for an early solution as desired by all Naga civil society groups. While appreciating the agreement signed between Naga Political Groups (NPGS), the 14 Tribal Hohos observed that Nagas have struggled for more than seven decades where thousands of people had died during the period, while many were imprisoned and almost all Naga villages burnt down to ashes. The Hohos however pointed that Nagas still did not lose hope for a new dawn in the history of Nagaland, while Nagas

ULB: Govt forms panel to study women quota vis-à-vis Art 371A Correspondent

KO H I M A , O C T 2 2 (NPN): After having put the contentious issue of 33% women reservation in Urban Local Bodies (ULBs) on the backburner following spate of vehement protests across Nagaland in 2017, the state government has decided to revisit the issue and resolve the conflict over Article 371A. A consultative meeting was held on October 20 over the contentious 33% women reservation in ULBs vis-à-vis Article 371A at the chief minister’s residential complex. The state chief minister Neiphiu Rio held discussions with officers of the Municipal Affairs Department (MAD) and represenCandidate can’t claim cadre of choice after qualifying civils: SC NEW DELHI, OCT 22 (IANS): Supreme Court Friday said a candidate, as a matter of right, cannot claim allocation of cadre of choice, after qualifying the civil services examination. “...The applicant as a candidate for the All-India Service with eyes wide open has opted to serve anywhere in the country. Once an applicant gets selected to service, the scramble for the home cadre starts,” the bench said.

tatives of Central Nagaland Tribes Council (CNTC), Eastern Nagaland People’s Organisation (ENPO) and Tenyimia Public Organisation (TPO). At the meeting, it was decided that a committee will look into the issue and after submitting its recommendation, the cabinet will discuss the matter on ULB elections can be held in the state. Confirming this to Nagaland Post, advisor NRE and S&T, Mmhonlumo Kikon said that the committee will be headed by chief secretary and Municipal Affairs principal secretary as member secretary. Other members of the committee would include senior official from the Law and Justice department and representatives from ENPO,

CNTC and TPO. Tribal bodies of Nagaland contend that the reservations for women infringe on Naga customary laws and traditions as protected under Article 371(A) of the Constitution. The trouble stems from 33% reservations for women in urban local bodies (ULBs), in accordance with Article 243(T) of the Constitution. Meanwhile, it has been learnt that ENPO had reminded the chief minister about the public resolution for upgrading Mon and Tuensang local bodies from town councils to municipal councils. Sources said the chief minister had assured to look into the matter after cadastral survey was conducted.

scattered in many States came to realise the need for a peaceful settlement. They said progress for early settlement of the Naga issue was evident after many years of attempt after the initiative taken first by the NSCN (I-M) and thereafter by seven NNPGs for holding peace talks with Government of India (GoI). In view of the above, the Hohos appealed to all factions to come to the negotiating table for a peaceful settlement. Further, the Hohos said though integration of contiguous Naga-inhabited areas and independence are not going to be considered, as mentioned by the then interlocutor RN Ravi, the agreement would however cover the Nagas in Arunachal, Assam and

Oil prices have risen by $8 in a month to $84 per barrel. Oil has doubled in a year and is up 40% from the same time two years ago. Domestic petrol pric-

Naga talks hit roadblock with NSCN (I-M) firm on flag, constitution NEW DELHI, OCT 22 (IANS): Even as the Centre has resumed the Naga peace talks with NSCN (I-M), negotiations face roadblocks as the group was adamant in their main demands for a separate Constitution and flag. According to IANS, sources aware of these developments said that the Centre was hopeful that a successful solution of the decades-long peace talks would arrive at a logical conclusion, but in the recent statements Naga leaders have accused the Centre

NH flays Oct 17 factional clash DIMAPUR, OCT 22 (NPN): Expressing dismay over the killing of late Atoka Kinimi of Niki-led NSCN(K) on the night of October 17, 2021, the Naga Hoho (NH) Friday said that it “highly condemn the incident in the highest term.” NH said recurrence of “fratricidal killing is highly condemnable by one and all for the fact that, Naga people wanted no more bloodshed in our land.” NH said that the “reason may be known to the perpetrators, but taking life of another person was a serious crime and against God’s creation of human in His own image.” The Hoho has, therefore, reiterated its appeal to all the political groups “to stop committing the fratricidal killings amongst the Naga family in the name of Naga struggle for freedom and self-determination.”

for offering post-solution options. Sources quoting the stand of Naga leaders, said that NSCN’s stand was loud and clear that it would not follow the forbidden route to the Naga solution that was linked to foregoing the Naga national flag and Constitution, which is the face of the Naga political struggle and identity. The Naga leaders have also said that the Centre has been using divisive policy and flattery in the name of finding the Naga political solution when the matters heated up.

When the Centre resumed the peace process in September this year and sent the former special director of the Intelligence Bureau (IB) A.K. Mishra as the Ministry of Home Affairs’ emissary to the rebel outfit’s chief negotiator and general secretary T. the two issues that are holding up the Naga solution under the ongoing Indo-Naga political talks in Delhi. “The chequered history of the Indo-Naga political issue is clear enough before us, with accords and agreements that were never meant to be implemented in letter and spirit”, an important office-bearer of the outfit said while criticising the governments’ stand. He further accused the Centre of persuading the Naga people again to accept whatever is being offered to hurry up the Naga talk.

Big new Covid wave unlikely but too early to say India in endemic stage: Scientists NEW DELHI, OCT 22 (PTI): India is unlikely to see a Covid wave like the devastating second one unless there is a new immune escaping variant but the lower number of cases does not necessarily mean the pandemic is now endemic, several experts said on Friday. Giving hope and also injecting a note of caution as the festive season peaks with Diwali just days ahead, they said a dipping Covid graph is only part of the picture and pointed to factors such as the mortality rate, the need for a larger vaccination cover and examples of countries such as the UK where numbers are again rising. NPCC asks govt to take measures to lessen climate change impact DIMAPUR, OCT 22 (NPN): Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee (NPCC) has suggested the state government to be ready to meet heavy showers, floods and droughts as impacts of climate change would have serious effects on life expectancy and economy. A disease is described as endemic when it continues to be present within a given geographical area but its impact is manageable. “It is possible that endemicity is close in some parts of the country, but the data needed to confirm this is not easily available,” added Murad Banaji, senior lecturer in mathematics at UK’s Middlesex University who has been closely tracking India’s Covid graph and has done several model studies. “For example, we do not know how many current infections are occurring amongst people who have

What is likely is that measures to control transmission will still be needed for some years to come. Epidemiologist Ramanan Laxminaryan concurred, saying there can be periodic flare-ups even with an endemic disease as is being observed in the UK. “I believe we should wait for another two months before determining whether Covid-19 poses a significant future threat to the country,” Laxminarayan, director of the Centre for Disease Dynamics, Economics & Policy in Washington, told PTI in an email interview.
