Work on Foothill Road to continue in affected areas Excise deptt calls for eradicating drug menace DIMAPUR, JUN 23 (NPN): Work on the Foothill Road would continue in areas where even torrential rains would not cause disruption, while that in the hilly and flash flood-prone areas in the plains could slow down during the rainy season. Resolving this at a joint meeting of PWD (R&B), contractors and Nagaland Foothill Road Coordination Committee (NFHRCC) held at the PWD Directorate, Kohima on Wednesday on the ongoing construction of the Foothill Road and final completion of Doyang bridge, it was also decided that instead of wasting ma-
chineries and workforce engaged by the contractors in these areas, the work could resume soon after the monsoon subsided. I n a p r e s s n o t e, NFHRCC convener Supu Jamir, general secretary W Lemba Chang, co-convener Hokiye Yepthomi and assistant general secretary Chenithung Humtsoe said that the meeting, held under the aegis of NFHRCC, also decided that the issue of final completion and inauguration of Doyang bridge at Governor’s camp would be further discussed by the department, the contractor and the committee at an appropriate time.
The committee also drew attention of PWD (R&B) to construction of a culvert between Niuland and Hovekhu village and repairing of Hanging bridge over Dikhu river at Naginimora division, both of which were beyond the fund provision of Foothills Road. It requested the department to pay attention to the deplorable condition on the aligned Foothill Road between Athibung and Khelma at the earliest. Release of running bills to the contractors based on progress report was also discussed and the department assured of sorting it out with higher authorities for an
early resolution of the issue. The meeting decided that re-survey visit, especially in Baghty division and in some sectors, would be done jointly by PWD (R&B), contractors and NFHRCC at the earliest as soon as the incessant rains stopped. The committee appreciated the efforts of engineer-in-chief and chief engineer of PWD (R&B) and the respective contractors, including the one involved in construction of Doyang bridge, for their commitment in making the Foothill Road pliable at the earliest as the people were eagerly awaiting its completion since 2013.

GUWAHATI, JUNE 23 (IANS): The Radisson Blu luxury hotel, located on National Highway 37 on the outskirts of Assam’s main city has become the centre of attention ever since rebel Siv Sena leader Eknath Shinde camped there along with 40-odd MLAs, posing an existential threat to the Maha
Vikas Aghadi government in Maharashtra. The MLAs, led by Shinde, first put up at a hotel in Surat in BJP-ruled Gujarat late on Monday from where they flew to Guwahati, another BJPruled state, on Wednesday morning. After landing at the Lokapriya Gopinath Bor-
doloi International Airport here, the rebel MLAs were taken to the Radisson Blu hotel in three Assam State Transport Corporation luxury buses, escorted by the police. According to sources, a total of 70 rooms have been booked for Rs 56 lakh at the luxury hotel, which has extensive event space,
an outdoor pool, a spa, and five restaurants. Adding to this is the daily estimated expense for food and other services at Rs 8 lakh (Rs 56 lakh for seven days), taking the total seven-day cost to Rs 1.12 crore, sources said. In a show of strength, Shinde on Thursday posted pictures and videos with 41 MLAs from the hotel,
spelling more trouble for Chief Minister and Sena supremo Uddhav Thackeray. The pictures show the MLAs gathered in a hall for a photo-shoot, raising slogans for Shiv Sena, Balasaheb Thackeray and Eknath Shinde, without mentioning Uddhav Thackeray.

BJP blind to pain of flood-affected NE only interested in lust for power: Cong
NEW DELHI, JUN 23 (PTI): The Congress on Thursday accused the BJP of being “blind to the pain” of the people of the Northeast suffering from floods and said that instead of focussing on relief measures, the party is trying to destabilise the government in Maharashtra. The flood situation in Assam remained grim on Thursday with over 54.5 lakh people still affected and 12 fresh deaths reported. According to officials, the toll due to the floods since mid-May is now 101. Speaking with reporters at the AICC briefing here, party MP Gaurav Gogoi said, “We all know there are currently floods in Assam, in Meghalaya. In the past, whenever there have been floods or any natural disaster, a responsible central government sends a team of ministers, the prime minister visits himself, studies and assesses the situation and then offers relief and urgent aid.” “The BJP in its lust for power has become blind to the pain of the people of northeast who are suffering from floods,” he said. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is either busy

campaigning for Gujarat elections or trying to “destabilise a government in Maharashtra”, he alleged. “This is cold-hearted, brutal, insensitive and never before have we seen that at a time when people do not even have water, the government is diverting its resources toward its own political ambitions,” Gogoi, who hails from Assam, said. He also slammed Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma for his remarks hours after a group of Maharashtra MLAs led by dissident Shiv Sena leader Eknath Shinde reached Assam and were put up in a luxury hotel. Sarma had said that he welcomes all to visit Assam as
the state needs revenue to “Unfortunately, the chief minister takes this as a matter of joke yesterday. He said we are happy that guests from Maharashtra have come and are staying in hotels and based on GST, he will get finances to help the people,” Gogoi said, accusing Sarma of making light of a natural disaster. Rebel Shiv Sena leader Eknath Shinde currently camping with 37 rebel MLAs of the Sena and nine independents in Guwahati has plunged the party-led Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government into a crisis. The NCP and Congress also share power in the Uddhav Thackeray-led dispensation.

Tripura bypolls record 76.62% turnout; Oppn allege rigging AGARTALA, JUN 23 (PTI): The by-elections to the four assembly constituencies in Tripura on Thursday recorded 76.62 per cent voter turnout till 5 pm, Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) Kiran Gitte said. The polling process was largely peaceful, barring a few sporadic incidents, including the stabbing of off-duty police constable Samir Saha in Kunjaban area in Agartala constituency, he said. Saha is at present undergoing treatment at a hospital, he added. Opposition Congress demanded repoll in four booths of Agartala constituency, claiming largescale rigging, while TMC alleged that “democracy was murdered” in the name of by-elections. The ruling BJP exuded confidence in winning all the four seats where elections were held. Jubarajnagar assembly constituency recorded the highest voter turnout at 80.41 per cent, while Surma constituency saw 80 per cent polling. Town Bardowali assembly constituency, where Chief Minister Manik Saha is the BJP candidate, recorded the lowest turnout at 69.54 per cent. In the Agartala seat, 76.72 per cent turnout was recorded. The state had recorded 87 per cent voter turnout in the 2018 assembly elections. The polling started at 7 am and went on till late in the evening in some booths
as long queues were seen in the last hours. “We have not received any major complaint regarding voting,” Gitte said. A total of 1,89,032 voters were eligible to exercise their franchise in the by-elections. The chief minister exuded confidence about the party’s prospects in all four seats. “Voters queued up at the booths and exercised their democratic right in a festive mood. We are 100 percent sure of winning the four seats. The turnout was good, which indicates people’s confidence in the ruling BJP,” he said. The Cong ress demanded re-polling in four booths of Agartala constituency where the party’s Sudip Roy Barman is pitted against BJP’s Ashok Sinha. “ We c o n g r a t u l a t e the people who voted for the Congress, defying the attacks, threats and intimidation. The party will soon demand repoll in four booths of Agartala constituency for largescale irregularities,” state Congress president Birajit Sinha said. “Despite all attempts to prevent the voters, a large number of people turned up at polling stations and cast their votes. The moderate turnout in Town Bardowali constituency is a good sign for the Congress,” said Asish Saha, who is the Congress candidate against the chief minister.

He has said that it will be a proud moment for tribal communities across the country,” he said on Wednesday. Sangma, who is the NPP national president, is likely to convene the MDA meeting after his return from his tour to flood affected areas in South Garo Hills. The chief minister praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi in a tweet on Tuesday night for the choice of the NDA presidential candidate. “Thanking @PMOIndia, @narendramodi Ji for
Conrad K Sangma nominating an indigenous tribal woman candidate, Smt Draupadi Murmu Ji as the presidential candidate,” he tweeted. “It was a long cherished dream of my father, late P A Sangma to have a tribal president of our country. Manipur urges New Delhi to suspend border fencing
Correspondent
IMPHAL, JUN 23: Border fencing works along the disputed Manipur sector of the Indo-Myanmar border will be suspended with immediate effect, said chief minister N Biren Singh on Thursday while appealing people to calm down. A delegation of United Committee Manipur (UCM) that had earlier visited the border area recently found that fencing work at the Manipur sector of the Indo-Myanmar which remained suspended for a long time following strong objections from various civil society organizations had re-commenced After failure to get a positive response to stop the re-commenced fencing with strong allegation of conceding a large chunk of Manipur’s land to Myanmar, UCM has been protesting since Tuesday. The protest turned violent on Wednesday after police resorted to firing teargas shells and mock bombs to disperse the protesters at Khurai Lamlong Bazar. Talking on the sideline of a function here today, the chief minister said that the state government has written to the concerned Union ministry of home affairs to suspend the ongoing fencing works at the disputed areas. He, however, said that the fencing at the undisputed borderline will be continued as border fencing was a must for checking
cross border smuggling of illegal goods. The erection of the fencing will be able to check smuggling of illegal goods, particularly contraband drugs, and the influx of illegal migrants into the state. It will also enable to check smuggling of urea fertilizers to Myanmar, he added. An official source said that Special secretary (Home) H Gyan Prakash of Manipur government has written a letter to the Union home secretar y regarding the matter on Wednesday (June 22). The letter requested the Union home secretary for partial suspension of the ongoing border fencing work along the Manipur sector of the Indo-Myan-
mar border while apprising of the tense situation arising out protests under the aegis of the UCM against fencing work at a disputed area. The Border Road Organization (BRO) reportedly re-commenced the fencing work along the Manipur sector of the Indo-Myanmar border from border pillar (BP) 79 to BP 81 covering a distance of 10 km from Moreh to Kwatha in Tengnoupal district. The UCM is vehemently opposing the border fencing and has alleged that some of the border pillars, especially BP 81 and 82 were shifted towards Indian side from the actual international border, the letter informed. The law and order
situation of the state may worsen in the coming days as the UCM announced intensifying agitations if the fencing work is not suspended until the border dispute is settled first, the state government said in the letter. It urged the Union home ministry to direct the BRO to suspend the border fencing work where the position of border pillar is disputed, especially BP 81 and 82 until the dispute is resolved through dialogue. In the letter, the state government also requested the Union home ministry to depute a team of the ministry and Survey of India for holding a thorough discussion regarding the position of the disputed BPs.

NAGALAND POST, DIMAPUR FRIDAY, JUNE 24, 2022
Maha: As rebellion in ruling Sena triggers political crisis, floor test back in focus
MUMBAI, JUN 23 (PTI): The approval by Maharashtra Assembly Deputy Speaker Narhari Zirwal to appoint Ajay Choudhary as the Shiv Sena’s group leader in the House in place of rebel leader Eknath Shinde may expedite the need for the ruling coalition to prove its majority through a floor test, feels a constitutional expert. Talking to PTI, former Maharashtra advocate general Shrihari Aney said the group of rebel MLAs led by Shinde can assert that it doesn’t support the present Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government (comprising the Sena, NCP and Congress), and that the dispensation has lost majority, which will result in a no confidence motion. “The decision of the
Assembly Deputy Speaker to approve the appointment of Choudhary as the Shiv Sena group leader in the House replacing Shinde may have a precipatory effect by hastening the process of a vote of no confidence,” he said. The Sena-led MVA government is likely to state that it has numbers to prove its majority and call for a trust vote, he said. Aney said the process of a floor test will begin once it is completely established that the rebel group has the necessary numbers. ‘’Once it is established, it will indicate that the MVA has lost majority. The rebel group along with the BJP may stake claim to form the government, following which the governor will ask for a floor test,’’ he said.

Would be surprised if Thackeray does U-turn, says Rebel Sena MLA writes to Maha CM Thackeray; says Shinde Prithviraj Chavan on Raut’s offer to rebel Sena MLAs went against leadership to secure ‘rights’ of party legislators
Prithviraj Chavan Congress leader Prithviraj Chavan said on Thursday that he did not think that Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray would do an “about-turn” and agree to the rebel Shiv Sena MLAs’ demand that the Sena pull out of the ruling MVA alliance. Chavan was reacting to Sena MP Sanjay Raut’s statement earlier in the day that the Sena was “ready to consider” the demand of the MLAs led by Eknath Shinde that it should end the Maha Vikas Aghadi alliance with the NCP and Congress. “Does Sena want to join hands with the BJP in Maharashtra? The motives of Shiv Sena are not yet clear,” Chavan, a former chief minister, told reporters when asked about Raut’s comment. “I have not heard Uddhav Thackeray sound-
ing like this in his Wednesday evening’s public address. I would be surprised if Uddhav Thackeray does such an about-turn in less than 24 hours. I don’t think that Thackeray would do that,” he said. It was not even clear whether Raut was articulating the Sena’s official stand,” Chavan added. “There is not even clarity about which faction of the Shiv Sena should be considered as authentic face of the party,” the Congress leader added. Shiv Sena was facing an internal rift and it needed to address it, he said, adding that his party has no say on developments within the Sena. On Wednesday, Thackeray had reached out to rebels with an emotional appeal and offered to quit, saying he will be happy if a Shiv Sainik succeeded him as chief minister. State NCP president Jayant Patil, meanwhile, said his party had not yet discussed Raut’s comments. “But we want this government to complete its full term as it has taken some good decisions,” he added. “Those who leave Sena lose the election later,” Patil, a state minister, added.
Rebel Shiv Sena MLA Sanjay Shirsat has written a letter to Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray, claiming that state minister Eknath Shinde took the step of going against the party leadership as Sena MLAs, who faced “humilitation” for the last two-anda-half years, persuaded him to do so. While the Shiv Sena legislators had no access to the chief minister, the Congress and NCP, which are the “real opponents” of the Sena, were getting all the attention, he claimed in the letter, dated June 22. The Sena shares power with the NCP and Congress in Maharashtra. Shirsat, the MLA from Aurangabad (West) Assembly constituency, in the letter claimed that despite the Shiv Sena being in power and having its own chief minister, the coterie around Thackeray never allowed them access to ‘Varsha’, the CM’s official residence. There was no question of going to ‘Mantralaya’, the state secretariat, because the chief minister never came there, he said. The letter was posted
Sanjay Shirsat by Shinde on his Twitter handle, claiming these were the sentiments of the Sena MLAs. Shinde is currently camping with some rebel MLAs in Assam’s Guwahati city, plunging the Sena-led Maharashtra government into a crisis. In the letter, Shirsat said Eknath Shinde opened doors for the party MLAs to listen to their grievances, issues about development work in their constituencies and related fund, and problems with allies Congress and NCP. “Only Shinde heard us out and took steps to resolve all the problems. The party MLAs persuaded Shinde to take this step (of revolt) for the rights of all the leg-
islators,” Shirsat said in the letter. While the Shiv Sena legislators had no access to the chief minister, the Congress and NCP, which are the “real opponents” of the Shiv Sena, were getting all the attention, he claimed. “The Shiv Sena votes did not split in the Rajya Sabha polls, then why so much distrust in us for the Legislative Council polls?” he asked. The Shiv Sena-led tripartite Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) in Maharashtra was trumped by the BJP in the Rajya Sabha polls to six seats from the state on June 10, when the Sena’s second candidate, Sanjay Pawar, lost to BJP’s Dhananjay Mahadik.

He said the question of who the real Shiv Sena is and who the claimant of the bow and arrow symbol is cannot be decided by the Election Commission of India (ECI). ‘’The commission just registers a political party and allots a symbol,” Aney said. Shinde has asserted that he heads the real Shiv Sena and is set to apply for staking claim for the party symbol. This will be opposed by the Uddhav Thackeray faction, he added. He said the 2/3rd split in a political party, to avoid disqualification of MLAs, should happen in the legislature party and not the original party since membership there runs into lakhs and difficult to ascertain a vertical split. The Shiv Sena, which heads the MVA, has 55 MLAs, followed by allies NCP (53) and the Congress (44) in the 288-assembly where the current simple majority mark is 144. The BJP has 106 MLAs of its own and is backed by one lawmaker each from the Raj Thackeray-led MNS, the Swabhimani Paksh, the Rashtriya Samaj Paksh, the Jan Surajya Party and six independents, taking its tally with allies to 116.

not the Presidium Chairman. The meet was as well a pointer to the region and caste based groupings within the AIADMK. Within the party, most belonging to the Vanniyakula Kshathriyas community also known as Vanniyars, dominant in northern Tamil Nadu and the Gounders, seen as movers and shakers of the western region favoured EPS. Panneerselvam’s loyalists mostly belong to the southern parts of the state and to the Mukkulathor community, a Most Backward Caste like Vanniyars. OPS hails from the Mukkulathor community. OPS speaking in favour of considering taking back into the party, V K Sasikala, confidante of late party supremo J Jayalalithaa and appearing to be ‘soft’ towards the DMK were among the EPS camp’s grouses against him. Elsewhere, addressing a function, DMK President and Chief Minister M K Stalin made a veiled reference to the infighting in the AIADMK and said those who wanted to decimate his party have now been wiped out. When the EC-GC meet, that rejected all the 23 proposed resolutions, consistently focused on the ‘EPS for single leader’ demand, OPS was prompted to leave the dais along with his supporters including R Vaithilingam. The meet, that witnessed chaotic scenes was over in less than 40 minutes after it started.
dc-546/22
C H E N NA I , J U N 2 3 (PTI): Amid chaos, the AIADMK General Council meeting here on Thursday announced that the one and only demand of the GC members is to bring in a system of a single leadership for the party, favouring Joint Coordinator Edappadi K Palaniswami (EPS). The Executive and General Council meet held together saw EPS emerging as the supreme leader and he was honoured with a decorated crown, a sword and sceptre by supporters. EPS’s colleague and Coordinator O Panneerselvam, popularly known as OPS was apparently snubbed in the meet and rude slogans were shouted against him. The meet, which stuck to the one and only demand of making EPS the supreme party leader, turned out to be a full show of strength of the Palaniswami camp with OPS followers heavily outnumbered. Panneerselvam camp promptly declared the proceedings invalid and OPS, a three-time Chief Minister is likely to air-dash to Delhi to explore options like approaching the Election Commission to take forward his fight against EPS faction. While the EPS camp asserted that the GC would meet again on July 11 to elect Palaniswami as the party head, OPS group said that it is not possible as only Coordinator and Joint Coordinator had the powers to convene the meet and

Destabilisation politics
I
t is easier to blame the BJP for engineering destabilisation of non-NDA ruled states since coming to power at the Centre in 2014 than on the failures of the state governments to successfully counter the game. BJP has elbowed Congress in eight states and today with NDA partners rules 17 states covering 44% of India’s territory and 49.6% of its population. BJP wants more till it becomes the only dominant national party. As the political crisis unfolds in Maharashtra, top BJP leaders have played hosts and negotiators as they executed ‘Operation Lotus’. Operation Kamal or Lotus’ has been repeatedly used by the BJP which allegedly orchestrated successful campaigns, including poaching, to replace an elected Opposition-ruled government midway with their own leaders. It is not only the BJP but also central agencies that have put huge pressure on opposition MLAs with summons and reviving old cases with the unmistakable message that reprieve is just an aisle away to the BJP bench. In the latest development, the BJP has succeeded in engineering a crisis within the Shiv Sena MLAs in Maharashtra when over 37 rebelled against chief minister Uddhav Thackeray. The rebel leader Eknath Shinde has managed to spirit away anti-Uddhav members to Surat then to Guwahati where they are currently holed up. Government formation in Maharashtra was replete with suspense and betrayals in November 2019 . Sena walked away from BJP over rotation of CM post. Seeing the writing on the wall, Maharashtra governor Koshyari recommended President’s Rule. Then in a surprise move, PR was revoked just when NCP leader Sharad Pawar managed to have NCP and Congress back the Sena to form the government. Revocation was later seen as a way for BJP leader Devendra Fadnavis to form the government with backing of Sharad’s nephew and heir apparent Ajit Pawar. After Supreme Court agreed to floor test, Fadnavis resigned. Ajit Pawar did a homecoming to his uncle Sharad. This cleared the decks for the installation of Uddhav-led Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) coalition. Hardly two years later, the BJP has exacted its revenge by splitting the Shiv Sena. The political crisis in Maharashtra may not necessarily be attributed to the success of BJP’s ‘Operation Lotus’ but more to purported disrespect shown on grass root Shiv Sena party workers by Congress, NCP leaders and bureaucrats. This grouse was nurtured by Eknath Shinde, a veteran Sena worker and politician who is leading the current rebellion. The Shiv Sena and BJP are two sides of the same coin but circumstances took them apart and brought the Sena to NCP and Congress for power. There never was any love lost between the Sena and the NCP and Congress as could never see eye to eye due to ideological differences. The MVA was chugging along till the recent Rajya Sabha and legislative council polls where Shiv Sena MLAs cross voted for BJP nominees. The BJP’s has been on campaign and destabilisation mode since coming to power at the centre in 2014.The issue may witness controversies surrounding the role of the governor, the speaker and the centre-which had been prominent in all the ‘Operation Lotus’ games where constitution and convention do not apply. The only hope to ensure due process of law is the Supreme Court and hopefully, it will ensure just that in the days to come.
DailyDevotion “Acquainted With Grief”
He is…a Man of sorrows and acquainted with grief. — Isaiah 53:3
We are not “acquainted with grief” in the same way our Lord was acquainted with it. We endure it and live through it, but we do not become intimate with it. At the beginning of our lives we do not bring ourselves to the point of dealing with the reality of sin. We look at life through the eyes of reason and say that if a person will control his instincts, and educate himself, he can produce a life that will slowly evolve into the life of God. But as we continue on through life, we find the presence of something which we have not yet taken into account, namely, sin— and it upsets all of our thinking and our plans. Sin has made the foundation of our thinking unpredictable, uncontrollable, and irrational. We have to recognize that sin is a fact of life, not just a shortcoming. Sin is blatant mutiny against God, and either sin or God must die in my life. The New Testament brings us right down to this one issue— if sin rules in me, God’s life in me will be killed; if God rules in me, sin in me will be killed. There is nothing more fundamental than that. The culmination of sin was the crucifixion of Jesus Christ, and what was true in the history of God on earth will also be true in your history and in mine— that is, sin will kill the life of God in us. We must mentally bring ourselves to terms with this fact of sin. It is the only explanation why Jesus Christ came to earth, and it is the explanation of the grief and sorrow of life.

NAGALAND POST, DIMAPUR FRIDAY, JUNE 24, 2022
O
Lamentations on the AFSPA fallacy
n 5th December 2021 at Oting, Nagaland, India, consequent to the tragic killing of six innocent civilians on Dec. 4, 2021, and the ensuing violence which led to seven more civilian deaths and one army personnel, there lay on the table during funeral rites a sum of Rupees Eighteen Lakh as ex-gratia from the Nagaland Government for the lives of 13 Naga villagers that were shot down by the 21 Para Special Force of Indian Army. Thus, the precious lives of 13 Naga innocent men have been reduced to worth a sum of money of Rs. 18,00,000/, to be split among the bereaved families. The victims were coal miners returning towards home in the cold winter evening as their family members sit around the fireplace warming up food for dinner, waiting for the father who never came home again. Cease fire between the government of India and the Naga army who are popularly known as ‘the underground’ is in force for almost 26 years. The army though in a statement has expressed ‘deep regrets’ over the killings; yet the government of India is not known to have taken any measures of ex-gratia or relief to the family of the victims. The local civil societies demand the trial of the officers and jawans involved in the massacre in an appropriate court. A 22 member high level Special Investigation Team (SIT) of Nagaland State Police has completed investigation and submitted its charge sheet finally indicting 30 Indian army personnel, including a Major. A counter terrorism law known as Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) is in force in Nagaland which prohibits any legal prosecution against any army personnel in respect of anything done or purported to be done in exercise of the powers conferred by this Act, without the previous sanction of the Central Government. Today, for once again in the history of this great nation of India, something more is on trial than the fate of the Indian army personnel charge sheeted and the victims of the Oting massacre: that is the Constitutional Law of India. If the State declares that by implementation of the law of AFSPA, such killing of any people of Nagaland on suspicion is justified then the Constitutional Law of the land is itself convicted in the moral tribunal of conscience, natural justice and human rights. Personally and without prejudice to none, applying my mind as a lawyer with reference to Article 34 of the Army Act, 1950; and, Article 33 of the Rome Statute of 1998, it doesn’t seem right to entirely blame the soldiers involved in the Oting incident to have in their own capacity committed a criminal offence because of the obvious question of the duty of military obedience of superior orders or of the Government; should he obey the order, at the risk of being held responsible for the commission of a crime, or should he ignore the superior order and risk being punished for military disobedience. A soldier who
refuses to obey an order which is deemed legal from the standpoint of the Constitution of India may well find himself before a firing squad after being court martialled by his own State. A soldier is thus caught in a dilemma. However, a subordinate may be held responsible together with his superior, when he knew or should have known that an order to shoot was illegal or when the illegality of the order is manifest. Inference can be drawn that both the Indian army and the Naga people are only enemies by chance, as Rousseau said, “War is in no way a relationship of men with men but between the states, in which individuals are only enemies by accident, not as men, but as soldiers..., logically, that soldiers may only be fought as long as they themselves are fighting. Once they lay down their weapons, they again become mere men. Their lives must be spared.” The case of Chandra Singh Garhwali of 1930 is a relevant eye opening case-study with regard to the conduct and liability of the Indian army in their explorations in the conflict-ridden present Nagaland, where mostly an army men comprising of mainland Indian origin has been deployed to counter insurgency operations in a minority Indo-Mongolian race that lack linguistic and cultural commonality, and equipped with an offensive anti-terror law that protects the armed forces from prosecution; under such circumstances there are scope for violence and disharmony unless the army men are guided upon by right conscience and brotherhood feelings like that of Chandra Singh Garhwali. In order to crush a group of Pathans largely comprised of Muslim protesters who were leading the Indian freedom movement by non-violent resistance organised by Mahatma Gandhi, the British selected a Hindu military regiment that did not belong to that region hoping the soldiers would follow orders of crushing the PathanMuslim revolters. The then British Captain Ricket asked Chandra Singh Garhwali to fire upon the non-violent protesting Pathans. Garhwali refused to obey the superior orders of British officers to open fire, thereby preventing another massacre on the scale of Jallianwalla Bagh. When the British captain demanded why Chandra Singh was not firing against the Indians, he replied, “These people are unarmed, how can we fire on them?” The British thought that lack of linguistic and cultural commonality between soldiers and local population will ensure that soldiers suppress dissent in ruthless way. The consequences of Garhwali’s disobedience to superior orders, he and his fellow soldiers were taken to custody and a court marshal awarded death sentence for him, which was later turned to life imprisonment. This case is ‘a thing that speaks for itself ’ of the consequences attributed to the services of the armed forces. The root of evil is in the law of the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA); the Act which
was promulgated as a counter terrorism law has been framed with such vagueness that the law prominently characterise more of a motivated aspiration and enthusiasm to kill or to harm, thus provoking more fear and hatred in the minds of the belligerents’. The legislation of the Act is so unbridled and unrestricted as such is capable of arbitrary exercise of power by enforcement agencies and possibly this can be used as an instrument to vent their anger or revenge upon the targets. The AFSPA is a random British law that was used as an experiment by the Colonial British Government to crush the unity and sentiments of Indian people whereby the British incessantly were forced to use this particular law as a measure of last resort in their losing battle until finally they left India for good in 1947. The AFSPA in itself and the working system of the law has destroyed the basic structure of the Indian Constitution in as much as the provisions of the fundamental right to life and of liberty, and, the fundamental principle of natural justice that that no man shall be condemned unheard has been opposed directly and therefore is a fraud on the Constitution in terms of Article 13; furthermore, the possibility for violation of human rights has been kept open which is in contravention to the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) and the International Protocol on Civil and Political rights (ICCPR) and other treaties of the United Nations (UN) to which India has acceded over the years. All of the successive government from 1958 - the year when AFSPA was imposed against Nagaland region, and to the present government have upheld AFSPA to continue as a ‘test’ to counter terrorism even though experiments with this kind of emergency and extra-ordinary law for over 60 years seems to have brought nothing laudable to its homeland other than criticisms and counter attacks. The government of India seems to be taking refuge from the fact that the Hon’ble Supreme Court of India in 1988 has upheld the constitutional validity of the AFSPA; however, the valid problem lies in the ground reality, the actual working system. Introspecting into the acts of atrocities, on record, committed upon the civilian Nagas with the application of this bad law, it is ‘sadful’ to note that the Republic of India, regarded to be the largest democratic country in the world, continues to violate the international humanitarian law and the conventions for peace and humanity adopted thereafter. In the past, the government of India has appointed various committees to review and study on the working system of AFSPA to which all the committees/commissions has discouraged the continuation of AFSPA, and recommended the law be repealed. In 2004-05, the Central Government established a five member
committee headed by Justice BP Jeevan Reddy to review the AFSPA, wherein the committee recommended that the Act should be repealed, saying the continuation of the present Act with or without amendments does not arise, and that the constitutional validity upheld by the Supreme Court is not an endorsement of the desirability or advisability of the Act. Again, in 2007 the Second Administrative Reforms Commission appointed by the President of India and headed by Veerappa Moily, upholding the recommendations of the Justice BP Jeevan Reddy Commission, suggested AFSPA be repealed. In the same year the then Prime Minister of India, Dr. Manmohan Singh appointed the Chairman of Minorities Commission, Mohammad Hamid Ansari, to review on the working group on confidence building measures in Jammu & Kashmir, and the group suggested that certain laws like AFSPA impinge on the fundamental rights of citizens and adversely affect the public, and recommended that these laws be revoked. In June 2011, the Government of India announced a high-powered task force known as the Naresh Chandra committee, which included retired Air Chief Marshal S. Krishnaswamy, retired Army General V. R. Raghavan and former Atomic Energy Chief Anil Kakodar, as members to review the defence management in the country wherein on May 2012 it submitted a key recommendation that the AFSPA should be watered down. In 2013 the Central Government constituted Justice Verma Committee to suggest amendments to laws relating to crime against women has recommended review of the continuance of the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act (AFSPA) in the context of extending legal protection to women in conflict areas and recommended that requirement for prosecution of armed forces personnel for complaints of sexual violence should be excluded from previous sanction of the Central Government and must be tried under ordinary criminal law. On record, the Hon’ble Mr. RN Ravi, former head of Intelligence Bureau and former Governor of Nagaland, and the present Governor of Tamil Nadu has commented that AFSPA is the biggest obstacle to peace in the region. Again, the Supreme Court appointed a high powered commission headed by J. M. Lyngdoh and Dr. Ajai Kumar Singh, and the committee in its March 2013 report has observed the reality fake encounters and extra judicial killings which are egregious examples of gross abuse of AFSPA. On the contrary, there are concerns from the frontline officers and soldiers of the Indian army posted in sensitive regions that believes that AFSPA as a very strong law which provides protection to the soldiers. In 2018, nearly 700 Army officers and soldiers have approached the Supreme Court against the so-called dilution of AFSPA, which shielded them from prosecution without the
central government’s nod, which however was turned down. Former Army Chief Gen. Bipin Rawat, in 2018 has asserted that “I do not think time has come to even rethink on AFSPA at the moment,” when asked about reports that the government was re-examining the demand for a milder version of AFSPA. Former Home Minister, Mr P. Chidambaram, in his lecture at the Institute of Defence Studies in Feb. 2013, has said that the Government cannot even make the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) more human because the army does not want it diluted, leave alone repealed. “We can’t move forward because there is no consensus.” The present and former Army Chiefs have taken a strong position that the Act should not be amended (and) do not want the government notification to be taken back. In 1991, when India presented its second periodic report to the United Nations Human Rights Committee, the Attorney General of India relied on the sole argument that the AFSPA is a necessary measure to prevent the secession of the North Eastern States and that a response to this agitation for secession in the North East had to be done on a ‘war footing’. Army Chief General MM Naravane, in a recent 2022 interview has said that the argument on repealing the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) needs a different approach, wherein the Disturbed Areas status of States needs to change. Taking the example of Tripura, where the act was repealed, Naravane said that repealing AFSPA from Nagaland is a decision of the State Government and Centre but added that the Army will be ‘most happy’ if the Army is relieved from its policing duties in disturbed areas so that it can focus on its primary role of fighting a conventional war. In time, the government of India have been pressured to repeal several anti-terrorists laws because of the unpleasant human rights abuse and excessive infringement those laws had on the personal liberty and right to life of the citizens. In the purpose to suppress threats to national unity; these controversial laws have been used continuously to arrest and detain people without a warrant and in most cases harassments were given to people who oppose the ruling government, for instance the A.K. Gopalan’s case. The Preventive Detention Act which was passed in 1950 for preserving national security and defence was abolished in 1969, because it was criticised heavily for allowing prevention detention during peacetime, regardless of safeguards embodied in the law. Preventive detention Act allowed a person to be detained without charge or trial for up to three months and denied detainees the right to legal representation. (To be concluded) Ahimsa Paramo Dharma! NNC Ao Region remembers and pays respect to Thepushu Venuh
T
he unilateral abrogation of the 1964 Indo-Naga Ceasefire by Government of India in 1972 once again plunged Nagas to darkness and error. The might of the Indian Armed Forces went all out to destroy Naga nationalism. The national character of the Nagas was tested and pushed to the limit. Indeed, they were trying times. But some of the finest examples of the people’s love for their nation was witnessed during such times. Such are the price of freedom and our political struggle for selfdetermination. Today we salute and pay our deepest respect to all our Naga patriots who laid down their lives defending the nation. The Naga political struggle launched under the political institution of NNC however had to defend itself from the betrayal and treachery of its
own ranks and files, who from the mid-1970s with socialist political ideology infiltrated the camp in the deep jungles of the East in Myanmar. Many precious Naga nationalist who refused to accept the socialist ideology were tortured, killed and assassinated. Our hearts cannot forget and continue to mourn for the innocent bloods that were brutally shed in the hands of our brethren. Our hearts aches that the remains of many of our patriots still remains unmarked in the East and were never given an honorable burial in their ancestral villages, they so deserve. But when we learned the news of the homecoming of the remains of our late leader Thepushu Venuh, Vice president , NNC to his ancestral village Thipüxumi – who had been buried for 43
years, in the Naga Hemi Region in Myanmar, there were not only tears in our eyes but also pride in our hearts. Tears in remembering the life of one of the most promising NNC leaders killed by assassins on 27th November 1979. Yes, we lament for the life that could not become. To what heights NNC could have consolidated the aspirations for all Nagas under his dynamic leadership, political acumen and integrity is now only a dream of the past. But our hearts are filled with pride because until his last breath he remained steadfastly true and dedicated to the NNC vision and position. He stood on the side of the fundamental truth of the Naga political case. Sorrow has a way of bringing memories alive. It is also a way of bringing people together in shared pain, loss and also hope.
This homecoming of our fallen leader and patriot from the jungles of Myanmar takes us back in time to our own journey when we went to collect the remains of our patriots from the Ao region. K.Mayanger, Information and Publicity, Kilonser, FGN-a close associate and friend of Thepushu Venuh who met the same fate in the same jungle, in the same year as Venuh. Just like his friend, K. Mayanger was also executed because he did not accept the socialist ideology. We brought K. Mayanger to his birth place, Mokokchung on 11th May 2009.K. Mayanger was Imkongmeren-the first NNC Vice-president’s nephew. The entire Imkongmeren’s family members-by blood and by marriage-serving the Naga cause in the Eastern Naga Homeland were killed in the jungle during this ideological battle. At different
points of time, we have tried to bring home the remains of some of our slain patriots. Someday, we hope we can find it in our heart and soul, the spirit to reconcile with the past for the sake of our future. Today we believe that to reconcile may yet be one of the toughest tasks and challenges expected of each Naga patriot and true nationalist. But today, we can only celebrate the life of Thepushu Venuh who lived with valour, integrity and courage. He truly deserves the highest Naga honour. He was truly one of Chakhesang’s truest sons of the soil. His dedication and sacrifice is a reflection of Chakhesang’s character. We are just so proud that NNC was served by honourable and towering personalities such as Venuh. Today we also want to take this opportunity to express our gratitude to the Chakhesangs for your
immeasurable contribution to the Naga national cause. Chakhesang- you have always been at the forefront of our national struggleunrelenting, untiring and defending the truth of our cause. We are inspired by your dedication, sacrifices, and courage. This character is reflected in the manner you have accorded honour and homage to Thepushu Venuh, one of our finest NNC leaders Under the banner of Chakhesang Public Organization. It is our hope that more Nagas will rally for the truth of the Naga political struggle in the way you have organized and presented to the world. Ao Region, NNC stands firm on the undeniable truth of our Naga political history. May God bless Nagaland. Urra Uvie. Issued by Ao Region NNC Publicity Department.

Tribal society is feeling very proud by the announcement of her name. I am sure her administrative and public experience will
benefit the whole country,” Shah tweeted in Hindi. M u r mu , w h o a l s o called on Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu today, will meet a host of senior leaders before embarking on a nationwide campaign, urging different political parties to support her If elected, a strong possibility given that she already has the support of a majority in the electoral college, she will be the first tribal person to be the president of India and the second woman in the post.
The Opposition has fielded former Union minister Yashwant Sinha as its joint candidate for the post. Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik, who has appealed to all MLAs of the state to support the “daughter of the soil” in the July 18 presidential polls, said two of his cabinet colleagues will be there when Murmu files her papers. “BJP President Shri @JPNadda Ji spoke to me about the filing of nomination of Smt #DraupadiMurmu Ji for #PresidentElections. My cabinet colleagues Shri @saraka_fan and Smt@TukuniSahu will sign nomination papers today and attend the event tomorrow,” the BJD chief, who is currently on an official foreign tour to Italy, said on Twitter. Besides, at least 10 of the BJP’s 22 MLAs in the state will remain present. Her candidature was also endorsed by Meghalaya’s ruling BJP-backed Meghalaya Democratic Alliance. A formal decision on the matter will be taken
at a meeting of the coalition partners, a senior member said. Five Congress MLAs who were suspended for supporting the MDA are also likely to vote in favour of Murmu, who rose from being a councillor in Odisha to Jharkhand governor and now the woman most likely to be president of the country. According to the Akhil Bhartiya Vanvasi Kalyan Ashram, an RSS affiliate, the NDA’s decision to nominate Murmu, from the Santhal community, is “historic”. In a statement in Hindi, it said tribal society had to suffer neglect for years despite being an integral part of Indian tradition and culture. With the country being home to over 12 crore tribals, Murmu’s nomination as the NDA candidate is a move towards bringing social change, it stated. It also called on all parties to support her nomination and elect her unanimously.

in 2013. Sonia and Rahul Gandhi are among the promoters and majority shareholders of Young Indian. Like her son, the Congress president too has 38 per cent shareholding. Swamy had accused the Gandhis and others of conspiring to cheat and misappropriate funds, with Young Indian paying only Rs 50 lakh to obtain the right to recover Rs 90.25 crore that Associated Journals Limited (AJL) owed to the Congress. In February last year, the Delhi High Court issued a notice to the Gandhis for their response to Swamy’s plea, seeking to lead evidence in the matter before the trial court.

cratic values. With various ruling alliance leaders noting Murmu’s humble background and tribal identity to laud her candidature, Sinha said, “She does belong to the tribal community. But what is it that she has done? She was a Jharkhand governor. What steps did she take to improve the lot of tribals? Being born into a certain community does not automatically make you the champion of that community.” He continued, “Look at the budgets I presented for five regular years when I was finance minister. Each budget carried special provisions for the weaker sections, including the Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes and women. That was the policy of the government in which I was working. I can claim today that I have done much more than her for disadvantaged communities and tribals except that I

was not born into the tribal community.” The BJP, he alleged, is depending on identity politics while the opposition is sending an ideological message. Though numbers in the electoral college for the presidential poll appear to be strongly tilted in Murmu’s favour, the bureaucratturned-politician said he entered into the contest with full conviction of winning and continues to hold onto it. “I know there are indications from various quarters to suggest that parties which are in the middle will tilt more towards the BJP than towards us. These are early days. Things will change going forward,” he claimed, adding he will speak to members of every party for support after filing nomination on June 27. He will travel across the country, he added. “When we began the campaign, the BJP was short of majority. Contest is open. I am in the contest and will ensure we give a good fight,” he said. The basic function of the President is to be able to protect and preserve the Constitution, and whenever he sees the executive is crossing the line it becomes his duty to discipline the executive, Sinha said.

NEW DELHI, JUN 23 (PTI): Opposition’s presidential candidate Yashwant Sinha asserted on Thursday that as a former Union minister he has done “much more” than his NDA rival Droupadi Murmu for Scheduled Tribes and other disadvantaged communities and questioned her record for their welfare in her various positions including as Jharkhand governor. Amid questions in certain quarters on the opposition’s support to him despite his long association with the BJP before he quit it in 2018, Sinha said he was “proud” of his record as a member of the party led by former prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee. The current BJP is “unrecognisable” from Vajpayee’s BJP, he said, alleging that democratic values are under threat in Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led government. Speaking to PTI, Sinha (84) said the presidential contest this time round is not a fight of identity but of ideology. “It is not a question of identity; who Murmu or Sinha is. It is the question of what ideology she represents in our polity and what ideology I represent,” he said, asserting that he stands for protecting and preserving India’s demo-

NEW DELHI, JUN 23 (PTI): The Enforcement Directorate has asked Congress president Sonia Gandhi to record her statement with the agency sometime in late July after it accepted her plea to postpone her deposition in a money-laundering case linked to the National Herald newspaper, officials said on Thursday. She was issued a second summons for June 23 by the agency but the 75-yearold Congress leader could not keep the date as she “has been strictly advised to rest at home following her hospitalisation on account of Covid and lung infection”. Sources said the federal agency has postponed her questioning in the case for about four weeks and she has now been asked to depose sometime in the last week of July. Gandhi was first issued the notice for an appearance on June 8 but after she reported positive for COVID-19, the summons for June 23 was issued. The Congress president was on Monday discharged from a private Delhi hospital where she was admitted for coronavirus-related complications. She was admitted to the hospital on June 12, days after she tested positive for COVID-19 on June 2. Her son and Congress MP Rahul Gandhi has been questioned by the agency in the same case for about 54 hours over five days. The probe relates to alleged financial irregularities in the Congress-promoted Young Indian Private Limited, which owns the National Herald newspaper. The move to question the Gandhis was initiated after the ED recently registered a fresh case under the criminal provisions of the PMLA after a trial court here took cognisance of an Income Tax department probe against Young Indian based on a private criminal complaint filed by BJP MP Subramanian Swamy

Listing out the key reforms, the Minister said UCBs cannot be satisfied with the current growth, having Rs 5 lakh deposit and Rs 3 lakh crore advance payment. “This may appear big, but what is its share in the total banking sector? Urban cooperative banks’ share in deposit is only 3.25 per cent, while in advance payment it is 2.69 per cent. We need to expand this,” he said.

Underlining the role of increasing exports in the transition of a country from developing to developed country, Modi said that in the last eight years, India has been continuously increasing its exports. Better policies to increase exports, easing of the process, and taking products to new markets, have helped a lot in this direction, he said adding today, every department of the government is giving priority to increasing exports with a ‘whole of government’ approach. “Exports from new areas are increasing. Even from many aspirational districts, exports have now increased manifold. The increase in exports of cotton and handloom products by 55 per cent shows how the work is being done at the grassroot level,” he said. NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday appealed to exporters and the industry to fix long-term export targets for themselves and suggest ways to the government to achieve those goals. Inaugurating the new Vanijya Bhawan here, he said that the exports play a critical role in the transition of a country from developing to developed status. During the last fiscal year, the Prime Minister said despite the historic global disruptions, India’s exports stood at a total (goods and services) of $670 billion (Rs 50 lakh crore). He added that India’s merchandise exports in 2021-22 crossed $418 billion (Rs 31 lakh crore), as against the target of $400 billion (Rs 30 lakh crore). “Encouraged by this success of the past years, we have now increased our export targets and have doubled our efforts to achieve them. MUMBAI, JUN 23 (PTI): The rupee on Thursday closed at its all-time low of 78.32 (provisional) against the US dollar as strong American currency and persistent foreign fund outflows weighed on investor sentiments. At the interbank foreign exchange market, the local currency opened at 78.26 and finally settled at its all-time low 78.32, unchanged from its previous close. On Wednesday, the rupee declined by 19 paise to settle at an all-time low level of 78.32 against the US dollar. The Indian rupee erased early morning gains as safe-haven demand drove the greenback ahead of quarter-end adjustments, said Dilip Parmar, Research Analyst, HDFC Securities. Parmar further said that there is a high chance of a near bounce amid a fall in commodities, strength in regional currencies and recovery in risk assets. “Spot USDINR is expected to be in the narrow range of 78.10 to 78.50 before heading towards 79 odd levels,” Parmar said.

Xi asks BRICS to jointly safeguard world peace Attacks US, EU military alliances
BEIJING, JUN 23 (PTI): Chinese President Xi Jinping on Thursday called on the BRICS nations to jointly safeguard world peace and tranquillity, and asked them to oppose the “abuse” of unilateral sanctions and reject the formation of “small circles”, in an apparent jibe at the US. Xi, who hosted the 14th BRICS Summit via video link, also noted that the shadows of Cold War mentality and power politics linger on in today’s world, state-run Xinhua news agency reported. Prime Minister Narendra Modi along with Russian President Vladimir Putin, Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro and South African President Cyril Ramaphosa took part in the annual summit hosted by President Xi. world to “reject the Cold War mentality and bloc confrontation, oppose unilateral sanctions and abuse of sanctions, and reject the small circles built around hegemonism by forming one big family belonging to a community with a shared future for humanity.” China has been critical of the Quad (US, India, Japan and Australia) and AUKUS (US, UK, Australia) alliances, alleging they were aimed at containing its rise. In his opening address to the 14th BRICS summit via video link, Xi said over the past year, the world has faced the continued spread of COVID-19, a tortuous world economic recovery and increasingly salient peace and security issues. “Facing the formidable and complex circumstances, BRICS countries have embraced the BRICS spirit of openness, inclusiveness and win-win cooperation, enhanced solidarity and coordination and jointly tackled the challenges,” said Xi.
Russians focus firepower to seize 2 villages in east Ukraine
KYIV, JUN 23 (AP): The Russian military expanded its grab of territory in eastern Ukraine on Thursday, capturing two villages and vying for control of a key highway in an offensive that could cut supply lines and encircle some frontline Ukrainian forces, British and Ukrainian military chiefs said. Britain’s defense ministry said that Ukrainian forces had withdrawn from some areas near the city of Lysychansk, the latest major battlefield in Russian President Vladimir Putin’s war against Ukraine, to avoid the possibility of being encircled as Russians sent in reinforcements and concentrated their firepower in the area. Ukraine’s General Staff said Russian forces took control of the villages of Loskutivka and RaiOleksandrivka, and were trying to capture Syrotyne outside Sievierodonetsk. For weeks, Russian forces have pummeled
the US and EU, he said certain countries, in attempts to expand military alliances to pursue absolute security, have coerced others to pick sides and created confrontation. “They ignored other countries’ rights and interests while seeking supremacy”, he said. “The world will become even more volatile and unstable if we allow the dangerous trend to continue,” Xi said. China asser ts that the eastward expansion of NATO by the US and EU was the root cause of
Russia’s offensive against Ukraine. BRICS countries should support each other on issues concerning their respective core interests, practice true multilateralism, uphold justice, fairness and unity, and oppose hegemony, bullying and division, Xi said. “The BRICS mechanism has demonstrated resilience and vitality. BRICS cooperation has achieved sound progress and results,” he said in his speech posted on the website by the Chinese Foreign Ministry. But at the same time,
he called on the BRICS nations to reject the Cold War mentality and bloc confrontation, oppose unilateral sanctions and abuse of sanctions, in an apparent reference to the sanctions by the US, EU and their allies against Russia for its invasion of Ukraine. “We need to encourage the international community to practice true multilateralism and uphold the international system with the UN at its core and the international order underpinned by international law,” he said. He also urged the

LONDON, JUN 23 (AP): As the World Health Organisation convenes its emergency committee Thursday to consider if the spiralling outbreak of monkeypox warrants being declared a global emergency, some experts say WHO’s decision to act only after the disease spilled into the West could entrench the grotesque inequities that arose between rich and poor countries during the coronavirus pandemic. Declaring monkeypox to be a global emergency would mean the UN health agency considers the outbreak to be an “extraordinary event” and that the disease is at risk of spreading across even more borders. It would also give monkeypox the same distinction as the COVID-19 pandemic and

Many scientists doubt any such declaration would help to curb the epidemic, since the developed countries recording the most recent cases are already moving quickly to shut it down. Last week, WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus described the recent monkeypox epidemic identified in more than 40 countries, mostly in Europe, as “unusual and concerning.” Monkeypox has sickened people for decades in central and west Africa, where one version of the disease kills up to 10% of people. In the epidemic beyond Africa so far, no deaths have been reported. “If WHO was really worried about monkeypox

BERLIN, JUN 23 (AP): Germany activated the second phase of its three-stage emergency plan for natural gas supplies Thursday, saying Europe’s biggest economy faces a “crisis” and warning that storage targets for the winter are at risk due to dwindling deliveries from Russia. The government said the decision to raise the level to “alarm” follows the cuts to Russian gas flows made since June 14 and surging energy prices exacerbated by the war in Ukraine. The third and highest stage is the “emergency” level. “The situation is serious, and winter will come,” Economy Minister Robert Habeck said in a statement. “The reduction in gas supplies is an economic attack on us by (Russian President Vladimir) Putin,” he said. “We will defend ourselves against this. But our country is going to have to go down a stony path now.” Russia last week re-
Defense noted in its intelligence assessment Thursday that Russian forces have likely advanced more than five kilometers (three miles) towards the southern approaches of Lysychansk since Sunday. “Some Ukrainian units have withdrawn, probably to avoid being encircled,” the statement said. “Russia’s improved performance in this sector is likely a result of recent unit reinforcement and heavy concentration of fire.”

Until last month, monkeypox had not caused sizeable outbreaks beyond Africa. Scientists haven’t found any major genetic changes in the virus and a leading adviser to WHO said last month the surge of cases in Europe was likely tied to sexual activity among gay and bisexual men at two raves in Spain and Belgium. To date, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has confirmed more than 3,300 cases of monkeypox in 42 countries where the virus hasn’t been typically seen. More than 80% of cases are in Europe. Meanwhile, Africa has already seen more than 1,400 cases this year, including 62 deaths.

ISLAMABAD, JUN 23 (PTI): At least 30 Pakistani tribal people, who were displaced during a military operation in 2014 and fled across the border, died in the powerful earthquake that hit a rural, mountainous region of eastern Afghanistan, a media report said on Thursday. The victims belonging to the Madakhel tribe of North Waziristan district were killed in the 6.1 magnitude quake that killed over 1,000 people and left 1,500 more wounded in Afghanistan on Wednesday. The bodies of 30 people would be shifted to their native areas after the Pakistani authorities temporarily opened the Pak-Afghan border at Alwar Mandi, the Dawn newspaper reported. Arrangements have also been made at the Ghulam Khan border for the transportation of the injured who, according to military sources in Miranshah, would be airlifted to special medical camps being set up in the area, the report said. The report quoting officials said that besides shifting the bodies and helping with the treatment of the injured, the ration was also being provided to the quakehit people.

Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey and Rhode Island all have similar laws likely to be challenged as a result of the ruling. The Biden administration had urged the justices to uphold New York’s law. Backers of New York’s law had argued that striking it down would ultimately lead to more guns on the streets and higher rates of violent crime. The decision comes at a time when gun violence already on the rise during the coronavirus pandemic has spiked anew. In most of the country gun owners have little difficulty legally carrying their weapons in public. But that had been harder to do in New York and the handful of states with similar laws. New York’s law, which has been in place since 1913, says that to carry a concealed handgun in public, a person applying for a license has to show “proper cause,” a specific need to carry the weapon. The state issues unrestricted licenses where a person can carry their gun anywhere and restricted licenses that allow a person to carry the weapon but just for specific purposes such as hunting and target shooting or to and from their place of business.

WASHINGTON, JUN 23 (AP): The Supreme Court on Thursday struck down a restrictive New York gun law in a major ruling for gun rights. The justices’ 6-3 decision is expected to ultimately allow more people to legally carry guns on the streets of the nation’s largest cities — including New York, Los Angeles and Boston — and elsewhere. About a quarter of the U.S. population lives in states expected to be affected by the ruling, the high court’s first major gun decision in more than a decade. The ruling comes as Congress is actively working on gun legislation following recent mass shootings in Texas,New York and California. Justice Clarence Thomas wrote for the majority that the Constitution protects “an individual’s right to carry a handgun for self-defense outside the home.” In their decision, the justices struck down a New York law requiring people to demonstrate a particular need for carrying a gun in order to get a license to carry one in public. The justices said the requirement violates the Second Amendment right to “keep and bear arms.” California, Hawaii,

Trumpet, a bloodhound, wins US Westminster dog show
A
bloodhound named Trumpet won best of show on Wednesday in the 146th annual Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show, beating out more than 3,000 dogs from 200 breeds and varieties to claim the most prestigious such prize in the United States. A 4-1/2-year-old male, Trumpet was handled by Heather Buehner, one of the four owner-breeders of the dog from Saint Joseph, Illinois. The lovable hound with trademark loose folds of skin was a crowd favorite at the smaller than normal venue in Tarrytown, New York, about 25 miles (40 km) north of New York City. Judge Don Sturz, a superintendent of a school district in Long Island, New York, declared him the winner over the reserve best in show, Winston, a French bulldog, whose owners include professional American football player Morgan Fox of the Los Angeles Chargers. Johnny Depp to tour with the Hollywood Vampires next summer
H
ollywood star Johnny Depp is headed to Europe for an overseas tour with his band Hollywood Vampires, which includes rock luminaries such as Joe Perry, Alice Cooper and Tommy Henriksen. According to ‘Variety’, the supergroup had previously cancelled a tour back in March because of pandemic-related obstacles. “We kept trying to make it happen, but unfortunately due to the uncertainty of Covid travel restrictions, it is just not possible,” they wrote in a statement at the time. Now, the group plans to reunite with fans in Germany and Luxembourg for a scheduled six shows. It will be quite a bit of a wait, however, as their first gig isn’t until next June at the Rudolf Weber Arena in Oberhausen, Germany.
Their last show will be on June 30 at Zitadelle in Mainz, Germany. Depp has been performing alongside Jeff Beck as a guest on his live shows -- which made headlines when the actor travelled to Europe to begin performing with the legendary guitarist just prior to his trial verdict in a lawsuit against ex-wife Amber Heard.
Depp has since joined Beck again for a run of shows in Europe until the tour wraps up on July 25 in Paris. Beck and Depp have also collaborated on a new album, ‘18’. They are releasing the joint project on July 15 with the set’s first single, “This Is A Song For Miss Hedy Lamarr,” having already been released. The song, written by Depp, pays homage to American film actress Lamarr (who died in 2000 at age 85). It is one of two songs written by Depp for the project, the other one being “Sad Motherfuckin’ Parade.” The original Depppenned tracks are the outliers of ‘18’, an album otherwise made up of cover songs, some of them sung by Depp, some in fully instrumental form. its effects on gut microbes, Wright said. She recommended focusing on general diet quality instead: Limit highly processed products and get plenty of nutrient-rich whole foods — including fruits and vegetables — rather than a daily beer. The study, published June 15 in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry, is one of the latest to delve into the hot topic of the gut microbiome. The term refers to the vast collection of bacteria and other microorganisms that naturally dwell in the gut. Research in recent years
has revealed just how important those microbes are to the body’s normal processes — from metabolism to immune defenses to brain function. Makeup of the gut microbiome is influenced by many factors, including genes, health conditions, stress and medication use (particularly antibiotics). But research shows diet is a key player. Past studies have found that diets rich in vegetables, beans, grains, nuts and fish — like the famous Mediterranean diet — may boost gut microbe diversity. There is also evidence that fer-
mented foods, like yogurt and kimchi, can do the same. For the new trial, Portuguese researchers wanted to test the effects of beer, which is a fermented extract of malted barley grains. Beer also contains numerous plant compounds, called polyphenols, that may affect gut microbes, according to the researchers, who were led by Ana Faria of NOVA University Lisbon. Faria’s team recruited 19 healthy men who were moderate drinkers and randomly assigned them to one of two groups. One group
drank a bottle of lager beer with dinner every night for four weeks; the other drank a non-alcoholic version. Both groups were instructed to keep up their normal eating and exercise habits. Before and after that four-week period, the men provided stool samples for an analysis of their gut bacteria. Overall, the investigators found, both groups showed an increase in their microbe diversity, along with revved up activity in fecal alkaline phosphatase. The researchers said that can be an indicator of better intestinal function. But a microbiome expert not involved in the study said the findings are “not very convincing.” “This is a small study looking at the composition of gut microbes at the genus level,” said Dr. Emeran Mayer of the UCLA Brain Gut Microbiome Center in Los Angeles. It did not look at measures of microbiome function, he added. That is not to dismiss the potential for beer to support a healthier gut. Mayer noted that consumption of hops, a plant used in beer brewing for aroma and bitterness, has been linked to health benefits. So it would be interesting, he said, for studies to look at whether microbiome changes are

P
utting a new spin on the term “beer gut,” a small study suggests that a bottle a day may do a man’s gut bacteria some good. In a clinical trial of 19 healthy men, researchers found that a daily bottle of beer — alcoholic or nonalcoholic — changed the composition of the men’s gut bacteria over four weeks. Specifically, either type of beer boosted the diversity in their gut microbes. In general, greater diversity in gut bacteria is considered better than less diversity. Experts cautioned, however, that it’s unclear whether people would gain any health benefits from the gut changes seen in this short-term trial. “We have a lot left to learn about what defines a healthy balance of gut bacteria,” said Lauri Wright, chairwoman of nutrition and dietetics at the University of North Florida in Jacksonville. Wright, who is also a spokeswoman for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, was not involved in the study. She said it’s always useful to have research that tries to observe the effects of a food on the human body. But in the real world, it’s overall diet that matters. And there is more to any food, or beverage, than K Y M C
one mechanism. H o w e v e r, M a y e r agreed that a healthy diet is the way to go. Trying to derive health benefits from a bottle of beer “is not a good idea,” he said. Even if non-alcoholic beer has the potential to boost gut microbe diversity, Mayer worried that people would still “use it as an excuse to drink regular beer.” “In general,” he said, “a diet rich in a large variety of plant-based foods and naturally fermented products is the best way to increase gut microbial diversity.”

Glastonbury is unique in selling out before any headliners have been announced, given the strength of previous line-ups with stars ranging from Beyonce to David Bowie, Dolly Parton to Bruce Springsteen and the Rolling Stones. Ranji Trophy Final Day 2: MP 123/1; Mumbai 374 all out
BENGALURU, JUN 23 (IANS): Yash Dubey (44 not out) and Shubham Sharma (41 not out) added 76 runs off 147 balls for the second wicket as they carried Madhya Pradesh to 123/1 in 41 overs, trailing Mumbai by 251 runs at stumps on day two of the Ranji Trophy final at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium on Thursday. After bowling out Mumbai for 374, with Sarfaraz Khan making a stunning 134, his fourth century of the season, Dubey and Himanshu Mantri stitched a stubborn opening stand of 47, keeping the fast bowlers at bay and after settling against them, Dubey welcomed left-arm spinner Shams Mulani with a boundary perfectly dissecting between mid-wicket and mid-on. Then, it was Mantri’s turn to take on Mulani, dancing down the pitch and hitting him for backto-back sixes, followed by driving him through short cover. Post tea, Mantri was trapped in front of stumps by pacer Tushar Deshpande. Shubham came out and began by striking boundaries thrice against Deshpande and Dhawal Kulkarni.

That set the tone for Sharma as well as Dubey to take boundaries on a regular basis despite Deshpande getting some help with move-
ment off the seam and extra bounce, with Mulani often being taken to the cleaners by the duo. With both batters looking rock-solid and
having faced 131 and 65 balls respectively, Madhya Pradesh will be fancying their chances of taking an upper hand over Mumbai on day three. Earlier, Sarfaraz’s runmaking juggernaut continued with a stunning 134 in guiding Mumbai to 374 in 127.4 overs. For Madhya Pradesh, Gaurav Yadav was the pick of the bowlers with 4/106 in 35.4 overs. After being watchful on day one, Sarfaraz continued to stand firm on day two and was rewarded for his perseverance with a stroke-filled 243-ball 134, laced with 13 fours and two sixes, lifting Mumbai from a tricky position to a seemingly competitive score. On his way to 134, Sarfaraz crossed the 900+ runs mark in a Ranji Trophy season for the second time after amassing 928 runs in 2019/20 season, becoming just the third batter after Ajay Sharma and Wasim Jaffer to do so. Resuming from 248/5 on day one, Mumbai lost Mulani on just the second ball of the day when Gaurav got one to jag back in and trap him plumb lbw. Sarfaraz first showed signs of shedding his cautious self
when he sliced Gaurav over backward point for a boundary. With Gaurav and Anubhav Agarwal keeping things tight, Sarfaraz was unable to get his shots and was stuck on 45 for long. As soon as left-arm spinner Kumar Kartikeya Singh got into the attack, Sarfaraz opened up by nailing a sweep over mid-wicket and reached his fifty with a single through the same region. Sarfaraz continued to nail his sweep against Kartikeya while timing his straight down the ground drives. Though Gaurav took out Tanush Kotian’s off-stump with a peach of a delivery and Kulkarni nicked to keeper off Anubhav Agarwal, Sarfaraz continued to march forward despite having a nasty collision with Gaurav. He even brought out the ramp shot against Anubhav, with the ball going over keeper and slips for a cheeky boundary. Sarfaraz then reached his century in 190 balls by driving Kartikeya down the ground to complete a superb knock under pressure. His celebrations on reaching the three-figure mark ranged
from being teary-eyed and punching the air in delight to bringing out the kabaddi thigh-five, met with thunderous cheers from the Mumbai camp and spectators in stadium. After reaching the century, Sarfaraz continued to attack Kartikeya, slogsweeping for a six over deep mid-wicket and was followed by Deshpande slamming a boundary down the ground as Mumbai fetched 103 runs in the first session. After Deshpande fell, Sarfaraz and Mohit Awasthi hit a six each off Saransh Jain over long-off, followed by the former taking a boundary off Gaurav. In an attempt to go big again, Sarfaraz went for it but sliced to extra cover, ending a knock where he rallied around with the lower-order batters to pull Mumbai out of a precarious situation. Brief Scores: Mumbai 374 all out in 127.4 overs (Sarfaraz Khan 134, Yashasvi Jaiswal 78; Gaurav Yadav 4/106, Anubhav Agarwal 3/81) lead Madhya Pradesh 123/1 in 41 overs (Yash Dubey 44 not out, Shubham Sharma 41 not out; Tushar Deshpande 1/31) by 251 runs
11 Fernandez nears Benfica move
Enzo Fernandez
BUENOS AIRES, JUN 23 (IANS): Portuguese club Benfica are close to signing highly-rated River Plate midfielder Enzo Fernandez, according to media reports in Argentina. The Portuguese club has offered to pay 18 million euros for 75 percent of Fernandez’s economic rights, the Ole news outlet reported on Thursday. It added that the 21-year-old would likely remain with the Buenos Aires giants until the European winter. Fernandez has made 49 appearances for River, scoring 11 goals and providing nine assists, since being promoted from the club’s youth academy in 2019. The former Argentina youth team player has also reportedly attracted the in-
terest of Wolverhampton Wanderers and AC Milan, reports Xinhua. Meanwhile in other transfer news, Southampton are trying to ward off inquiries about James WardProwse, with West Ham joining Manchester City, Manchester United and Tottenham in making a move at the midfielder. Saints have sought $75m for WardProwse. Ajax are keen on taking back Tottenham’s Steven Bergwijn back to the Dutch top tier. Spurs want at least $25m for the winger but the Dutch champions aare likely to fulfill that demand as they have a bit of cash in their pocket after the successful transfer of Sebastien Haller to Borussia Dortmund.

Mallorca Championships: Tsitsipas reaches semifinal
Stefanos Tsitsipas
MALLORCA (SPAIN), JUN 23 (IANS): Stefanos Tsitsipas came through a grass-court battle against American Marcos Giron at the Mallorca Championships to reach his first tour-level semifinal here on Thursday. The Greek struggled to find his top level against Giron, but raised his game when needed to advance 7-6(5), 4-6, 6-3 in two hours and 35 minutes. “It was a lot of work today. It was not easy,” Tsitsipas said in his on-court interview. “I had to deal with the heat, had to deal with my opponent playing great. It was a big physical effort. I had the fighting spirit.” In a tight clash at the K Y M C
ATP 250 event, Tsitsipas showed his fighting spirit in a tense third set. The second seed saved both break points he faced to hold for 1-0, before he gained the decisive break in the eighth game to improve to 2-0 in his ATP ‘Head to Head’ series against Giron. Tsitsipas, who has earned a Tour-leading 38 wins this season, will next play Benjamin Bonzi after the Frenchman defeated Germany’s Daniel Altmaier 6-3, 6-4. Earlier this month, the World No. 6 earned grass-court victories over Dominic Stricker in Stuttgart and Bonzi in Halle. He now holds a 4-2 record on the surface in 2022.

However, India’s AFC ranking remains unchanged as they stand 19th, with Iran leading the rankings in the first place.

Both of them were announced as captain and vice-captain for the FIH Women’s World Cup, which will be held in Spain and the Netherlands, from July 1-17. There is one major change in the two squads with goalkeeper Rajani Etimarpu coming in for Bichu Devi Kharibam, who was part of the last few matches of the Pro League campaign and has also been picked for the World Cup.

Former captain and forward Rani Rampal will miss the Commonwealth Games too after she was not named for the World Cup. At the time of the announcement of the World Cup squad a couple of days ago. chief coach Janneke Schopman had said that Rani is still undergoing rehabilitation for her right hamstring injury.
IN her absence, the forward line will include t h e ve r y ex p e r i e n c e d Vandana Katariya, Lalremsiami, Navneet Kaur, Sharmila Devi and youngster Sangita Kumari. Defenders Deep Grace Ekka, Gurjit Kaur, Nikki Pradhan, and Udita have been named in the squad along with midfielders Nisha, Sushila Chanu
Pukhrambam, Monika, Neha, Jyoti, Navjot Kaur and Salima Tete. To k y o O l y m p i c Games semifinalists, India are placed in pool A along with England, Canada, Wales and Ghana. The team will begin its campaign on July 29 against Ghana. In their previous outing at the Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast, India had finished fourth after a loss to England in the Bronze medal match. However, after an impressive campaign in their maiden FIH Pro League, in which they finished overall third behind Argentina and the Netherlands, the Indian team is keen on a podium finish in Birmingham. Speaking about the team selection, Chief Coach Schopman said, “We have chosen an experienced side for the Commonwealth Games and the players believe they have a
good shot at a medal this time.” “The team is upbeat after a good outing in the FIH Pro League matches and understand very well that the expectations are also high. We would have finished our World Cup campaign only days before the CWG so it was very essential for us to pick a physically fit team as the recovery time between the two events is just about 10 days,” Schopman was quoted as saying by Hockey India in a release. The squad: Goalkeepers: Savita (captain), Rajani Etimarpu; Defenders: Deep Grace Ekka (vice-captain), Gurjit Kaur, Nikki Pradhan, Udita; Midfielders: Nisha, Sushila Chanu Pukhrambam, Monika, Neha, Jyoti, Navjot Kaur, Salima Tete; Forwards: Vandana Katariya, Lalremsiami, Navneet Kaur, Sharmila Devi, Sangita Kumari.
Mane aiming for UCL with Bayern, AIDA-SBI Gram Seva observes World Kahn shuts door for Lewandowski Olympic Day with remedial students BERLIN, JUN 23 (IANS): Sadio Mane is aiming for the highest goals with his new club Bayern Munich. He hopes to win the Champions League and bag the Ballon d’Or by helping the German giants succeed. “We want to win all possible trophies. And I will do all to make that come true,” the 30-year-old Senegal striker said after signing a three-year contract with the 2020 Champions League winners. “The squad has the quality to reach the top. It’s one of the world’s leading sides,” Mane stated. The former Liverpool forward spoke about the Champions League and the Ballon d’Or as targets when presented to the public on Wednesday in the Allianz Arena. The 2019 Champions League winner said he doesn’t feel like a new Bayern icon or one of the league’s figureheads. “I am a footballer always talking about the team as the star. It’s up to me to support the team on its way to success,” the 2022 Africa Cup of Nations winner commented. Mane said he is thankful for his time in Liverpool and the understanding of coach Jurgen Klopp. “He is a great manager and he could understand that I am up for a new challenge after six years.”

In a social media posting, Klopp spoke about the departing striker as one of Liverpool’s greatest, reports Xinhua. “I will miss him,” the coach said. “With him, one of the world’s best is leaving. Therefore, this is a significant moment. His star will continue to rise, there is no doubt. Everyone who loves Liverpool must love Sadio Mane.” After having played in France, Austria and England, the Bundesliga is the challenge he has been looking for, the new Bayern arrival said. “My life has been full of challenges and I love challenges,” the attacker added after the Reds agreed on a transfer fee of 32 million euros plus bonuses of up to nine million euros. Mane called Bayern the right club at the right time. He said he always followed the Bavarian side when playing for Salzburg. “Playing for Salzburg, you dream of the biggest clubs
in Europe. And you follow the Bundesliga and especially Bayern as the town is nearby,” the 2020 Premier League title winner stated. When it comes to Oliver Kahn, Bayern’s new arrival can be optimistic about playing in the same team as Robert Lewandowski. The club’s chairman said Lewandowski has to fulfil his contract which runs until 2023, despite rumours about offers from Barcelona. “At the moment we don’t deal with anything else. We have a responsibility to make the club as successful as possible,” the former German national keeper said. The 33-year-old Pole has proven his value for the club, Kahn added. “We saw his contribution over the past years and we will see that in the next season. He has got a contract until 2023, nothing else counts for us,” the club official said.

World Swimming C’ship: Canada’s 1st T20I: India beat SL by 34 runs; take 1-0 lead McIntosh breaks world junior record
DAMBULLA, JUN 23 (IANS): A fine finishing effort from Jemimah Rodrigues (36 not out off 27) and Deepti Sharma (17 not out off 8) followed by a disciplined bowling performance helped India beat Sri Lanka by 34 runs in the first T20I and go 1-0 up in the three-match T20I series, here on Thursday. Tight bowling effort led by the spinners helped India successfully defend a modest 138. Young allrounder Kavisha Dilhari tried hard with her enterprising 47 not out but it wasn’t sufficient for Sri Lanka to avoid the loss. Chasing a modest target, Sri Lanka were off to a poor start as Deepti Sharma dismissed Vishmi Gunaratne just off her second ball in the second over of the innings. Harshitha Madavi and Chamari Athapaththu ensured there was no more damage in the Powerplay. But they couldn’t make the best use of the fielding restrictions as Sri Lanka were only 25/1 at the end of six overs. With the run rate already over eight, Athapaththu (16) fell to Radha Yadav in her bid to accelerate the scoring. Deepti Sharma

got in the game two balls later - this time as a fielder - with a stunning tumbling catch in the deep to dismiss Madavi (10). Kavisha Dilhari put up some resistance, first with a 27-run stand with Nilakshi de Silva and then 32 runs with Ama Kanchana. However, both partnerships came at well below the required run rate. In the end, Dilhari remained unbeaten on 47 but could not stop India from romping home by 34 runs after Sri Lanka were restricted
Man United star Ronaldo could return to Juventus LO N D O N, J U N 2 3 (IANS): Manchester United star footballer Cristiano Ronaldo is planning to return back to Juventus after an underwhelming season with Primier League club. According to reports, Ronaldo’s manager Jorge Mendis has already made a move and offered the 37-year-old striker’s service to Juventus. An AS.com report suggests that Ronaldo’s manager has offered the footballer to the Italian giants. It has been learned that Juventus have not totally ruled out having star footballer in their side, although there is some doubt over whether they would be able to complete a deal. United have not won the Premier League title since 2013 and last won a trophy in 2017. They finished last season in sixth place, having sacked Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and replaced him with interim boss Ralf Rangnick. The new manager of the club, Erik ten Hag has been tasked with a tricky rebuilding job in his first summer at Old Trafford and will need to get to work on replacing some of the star

names who will leave when their contracts expire on June 30. Ronaldo is reportedly ‘worried’ about United’s current approach in the transfer window, according to a report from AS.com. Along with Ronaldo, Pogba, who was bought by the club for a record 89 million ($112 million), could return to his former club Juventus. Manchester United have already released some star players like Edinson Cavani, Lee Grant, Jesse Lingard, Juan Mata, Nemanja Matic and Paul Pogba when their contracts expires at the end of this month. The 37-year old found the back of the net 24 times in what was a forgetful season for Manchester United, as they failed to qualify for the Champions League, a result that leaves Ronaldo’s future at the Old Trafford under doubts.
to 104-5 in 20 overs. Earlier, India won the toss and opted to bat first but their innings was less than ideal. The first three overs of pace didn’t pose any problem for India but the introduction of spin turned the game around. In her very first over, Oshadi Ranasinghe had the India batters in tangles. The off-spinner was on a hat-trick after dismissing Smriti Mandhana and S Meghana before Harmanpreet Kaur negotiated the hat-trick ball. The
skipper struck a couple of boundaries to ensure that the Powerplay score looked good. The boundaries continued to flow even after the fielding restrictions were lifted before Sri Lanka struck at the vital time to remove the dangerous Shafali Verma for 31. One brought two for the hosts as Harmanpreet was trapped in front for 22. The wicket put a lid on the scoring as boundaries were hard to come by. Richa Ghosh and Jemimah
Rodrigues did manage to reconstruct with a 23-run partnership that came at little less than run-a-ball. India were 85/5 with five overs to go and needed to go big in the death overs. Pooja Vastrakar set the tone for the remaining overs with two boundaries off Ranasinghe. The next over also fetched two fours for India but Inoka Ranaweera had the last laugh with the wicket of Vastrakar. The wicket slowed down India with the overs 18 and 19 fetching only 12 runs. Deepti Sharma, though, teed off in the final over with three consecutive boundaries while Rodrigues finished the innings in style with a six. Overall, India scored 53 runs in the final five overs to post a total of 138/6, which eventually turned out to be a winning score. Brief scores: India Women 138/6 in 20 overs (Jemimah Rodrigues 36 not out, Shafali Verma 31; Inoka Ranaweera 3/30, Oshadi Ranasinghe 2/22) beat Sri Lanka Women 104/5 in 20 overs (Kavisha Dilhari 47 not out; Radha Yadav 2/22, Deepti Sharma 1/9) by 34 runs.

Medical staff to face trial for Maradona’s death Serena’s doubles campaign BUENOS AIRES, JUN 22 (AGENCIES): Eight people who took care of soccer legend Diego Maradona will be tried in Argentina courts for homicide, according to a ruling released on Wednesday following an investigation into his November 2020 death due to cardiac arrest. In the 236-page document seen by Reuters, the judge in charge of the case questioned “the behaviors - active or by omission - of each of the accused which led to and contributed to the realization of the harmful result.” The ruling said that eight people including doctors, nurses and a psychologist who cared for Maradona at the time of his death are accused of “simple homicide,” a serious charge that means taking a life with intent. A medical board appointed to investigate Maradona’s death concluded in 2021 that the soccer star’s medical team acted in an “inappropriate, deficient and reckless manner.” Maradona was considered one of the greatest soccer players in history, though the diminutive play-

er nicknamed “Pelusa” for his long mane of hair and “D10S” as a play on the Spanish word for “God” using his jersey number, battled drug and alcohol abuse for years. Mario Baudry, a lawyer for one of Maradona’s sons, told Reuters that the World Cup winner was “in a situation of helplessness” by the time of his death. Maradona died on November 25, 2020, at the
age of 60. “As soon as I saw the cause, I said it was homicide. I fought for a long time and here we are, with this stage completed,” he said. Argentine prosecutors launched investigations shortly after Maradona’s death at a house near Buenos Aires, including ordering searches of properties of his personal doctor and probing others involved in his care.
The defendants named in the ruling were Maradona’s neurosurgeon and personal doctor, Leopoldo Luque, psychiatrist Agustina Cosachov, psychologist Carlos Diaz, nurses Gisella Madrid and Ricardo Almiron, their boss Mariano Perroni, and doctors Pedro Di Spagna and Nancy Forlini. The defendants have denied responsibility for Maradona’s death. The judge said that lawyers for some of them had requested the case be dismissed. Vadim Mischanchuk, an attorney for Cosachov, said they would appeal the decision, adding the psychiatrist’s area of care had no relation with Maradona’s cause of death. “A guilty party is being sought at all costs and objectivity is being lost,” the lawyer said. Reuters could not immediately reach the defendants or the other lawyers for comment. The crime of “simple homicide” in Argentina usually leads to a sentence of 8 to 25 years in prison, according to the country’s penal code. There is no set date for the trial yet.
ends as partner Jabeur injured
Ons Jabeur and Serena Williams
EASTBOURNE, JUN 23 (IANS): The 23-time Grand Slam singles champion Serena Williams has been forced to withdraw from the Rothesay International at Eastbourne due to an injury to her doubles partner Ons Jabeur. A right knee injury to Jabeur, led to them withdrawing from the grasscourt event in Eastbourne, the WTA said on Thursday. There was no immediate news about the seriousness of Jabeur’s injury. Playing in her first event on tour since suffering an injury at last year’s Wimbledon, the 40-yearold Serena has found a winning combination by
pairing with singles World No.3 Jabeur for the first time. They were scheduled to play Magda Linette and Aleksandra Krunic in the semifinals after winning two matches so far in the event. The American and Tunisian partner made it through to the semifinals with a narrow win over Maria Bouzkova and Sara Sorribes Tormo, before a more convincing quarterfinal victory in straight sets against Shuko Aoyama and Chan Hao-ching. Serena will now focus on Wimbledon where she has accepted a wild card into the women’s singles in a bid to win a record-equalling 24th Grand Slam title.
No ranking points on offer but Wimbledon no exhibition
L O N D O N, J U N 2 3 (AGENCIES): Wimbledon starts on Monday without Russia’s world number one Daniil Medvedev and Belarus’s former top-ranked Victoria Azarenka but the grasscourt Grand Slam will hardly feel like an exhibition event despite no ranking points on offer. The 2022 edition of the world’s most prestigious tennis tournament will be held without points after organisers decided to ban Russian and Belarussian players from participating following Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine. The men’s ATP and women’s WTA, which do not govern the four tennis Grand Slams, called the move discriminatory while stripping Wimbledon of ranking points that determine a player’s ability to enter tournaments and receive seedings. Britain’s Andy Murray won the singles title at the All England club in 2013 and 2016. He feels Wimbledon “will never be an exhibition and will
never feel like an exhibition” with or without ranking points. “I follow golf very closely and have no idea how many ranking points the winner of the @TheMasters gets,” the 35-yearold said on Twitter last month. “Me and my friends love football and none of us know or care how many ranking points a team gets for winning the @FIFAWorldCup. But I could tell you exactly who won the World Cup and the Masters.” Novak Djokovic, who lifted the men’s singles
trophy at the last three editions, will lose the 2,000 points he earned at the 2021 Wimbledon and the Serbian is among many players who will be affected and drop down the rankings due to the decision. Four-time major winner Naomi Osaka was the highest profile player to express doubts over participating at Wimbledon due to lack of ranking points but last week the Japanese former world number cited a left Achilles injury when pulling out. While U.S. Open champion Medvedev and Azarenka, who won back-
to-back Australian Open titles in 2012 and 2013, will be among a host of names barred from competing, the players’ field does not reflect anyone missing in protest. The tournament will dish out record prize money of 40.3 million pounds ($49.53 million) despite the controversies. DIFFICULT DECISION: It is the first time players have been excluded from Wimbledon on grounds of nationality since the immediate post-World War Two era when German and Japanese players were banned but it was the only viable option under the guidance provided by the British government, the organisers said. ATP Chairman Andrea Gaudenzi said the decision to take away ranking points was “very difficult”. “We understand it’s not that they just woke up one morning and decided to ban players,” former top20 singles player Gaudenzi told Reuters during a recent interview. “I mean there is a war,
they had pressure from the government. There are good arguments for both decisions. But on the other hand, they also put us in a very, very difficult position”. “Could we have done nothing and just looked the other way? I think it would have been wrong because we stand for ranking fairness, no discrimination and equal access to opportunity.” Russian and Belarussian players are currently banned from international team competitions but they can compete as individual athletes without the flag. They were allowed to participate in the French Open at Roland Garros while there will be no restrictions against them in two months’ time at the U.S. Open - the year’s final Grand Slam in New York. Italian Gaudenzi hoped that all different governing bodies could sit down at the end of Wimbledon and decide on a united path for such situations in future. “We don’t want to find ourselves again in this difficult position,” he said.
