STATE GOVT INACTION, LIP SERVICE BY NFR LEAVES TRAVELLERS IN THE LURCH Staff Reporter
DIMAPUR, JUL 24 (NPN): A series of news reports in Nagaland Post highlighting lack of political will by the state government to act on land encroachers within Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) Dimapur, had attracted reaction from two legislators from Dimapur who have called for the state to immediately intervene in order to ensure expansion and development of Dimapur railway station in the larger interests of travelling public. According to NFR sources, encroachment has come in the way of expansion plans that are forcing projects to die premature deaths on the drawing board. The source said funds are not a problem for upgrading and expansion of Dimapur
State logs 10 fresh Covid cases, 1 death DIMAPUR, JUL 24 (NPN): Nagaland on Sunday reported 10 new Covid-19 cases and one new fatality, state health department bulletin report stated. Of the fresh cases, four were from Mokokchung, three in Kohima, two in Dimapur and one in Phek, taking the total caseload to 35,693. One more patient succumbed to the infection in Dimapur, pushing the death toll to 767 (including 5 non-Covid deaths but with positivity). The State currently has 92 active cases—12 admitted to Covid hospitals and 80 under home isolation.
India logs over 20k cases, 36 deaths
PTI: With 20,279 new Covid cases being reported, India’s tally of cases rose to 4,38,88,755, while the active cases increased to 1,52,200, according to the Union Health Ministry data updated on Sunday. The death toll climbed to 5,26,033 with 36 new fatalities, the data updated at 8 am stated. The active cases comprise 0.35 per cent of the total infections, while the national COVID-19 recovery rate was recorded at 98.45 per cent, the ministry said. An increase of 2,100 cases has been recorded in the active COVID-19 caseload in a span of 24 hours. The daily positivity rate was recorded at 5.29% and the weekly positivity rate at 4.46%, the ministry said.

if land is made available. According to the source, large tracts have been encroached on both sides of the station over which pattas have been issued. Eviction has been hampered by litigations that have dragged on for decades in the court. The NFR cannot wait perpetually to expand services to passengers as well as for ferrying goods in
the region. NFR had plans to install escalator (like in Guwahati) but had to be abandoned and whatever facelift was given had to be done on the existing infrastructure. NFR also had plans to increase the present number of platform from two to five but even the one of them platform No.2 has no canopy due to lack of sufficient space.
Land encroachment seems to have provided the excuse for the NFR to begin the diversion of a planned double–track that would have run through Dimapur. However, due to encroachments, measures are being undertaken to divert the planned double-track by skirting Dimapur. The new track breaking off from Dhansiri station through Dillai will bypass Dimapur and eventually reconnect with the Bokajan station. If land was available in Dimapur, the DhansiriDimapur-Bokajan stretch would have an additional track. The double-track would have enabled trains to move in both directions, while shortening the mandatory stops for slower trains. Rightly or not, the perspective at NFR over Dimapur seems to be negated
by encroachment and other problems. These have justified the consistent steps to decrease or downgrade the importance of Dimapur railway station. One of the ways by which Dimapur railway station is being systematically deprived of due share is with regard to quota of reserved seats. For instance, passengers at Dimapur have to buy tickets emanating at Jorhat, Furkating, Mariani or even Tinsukia for onward journey to Guwahati and beyond. This is because the quota for Dimapur is meagre in comparison with the volume of passengers. Instead of getting more trains to meet the number of travellers at Dimapur, which has earned huge revenue for NFR, the officials claimed that Dimapur railw a y (Cont’d on p-8)

Monkeypox alert: Centre holds high-level meeting RPP appeals govt to pay pending salaries of Tuli Paper Mill employees Delhi resident
NEW DELHI, JUL 24 (PTI/AGENCIES): The Central government on Sunday held a high-level meeting after a 34-year-old man from Delhi tested positive for the monkeypox virus. The man who has tested positive for the virus has no history of foreign travel. With the fresh monkeypox case in Delhi, the tally of those infected with the virus in India has climbed to four. Sources told PTI that the review meeting was chaired by Directorate General of Health Sciences and attended by officials from the Health ministry, National Centre for Disease Control and ICMR among others.
with no travel history tests positive
The new patient to have tested positive for the monkeypox virus is presently recovering at a designated isolation centre at the Lok Nayak Hospital. According to reports, the 34-year-old had attended a stag party in Manali in Himachal Pradesh recently. A doctor at the hospital
said that the patient came with a fever and had rashes on his body. His samples were sent to the National Institute of Virology (NIV) Pune on Saturday which came out positive, Health Ministry officials said. The health ministry also said that the close con-
tacts of the man who has tested positive for the monkeypox virus have been identified and are under quarantine. Sources have told news agency ANI that states and UTs have been advised for close surveillance on the monkeypox cases in India. The Delhi government has been advised for contact tracing of the monkeypox case. Three cases of monkeypox had earlier been reported from Kerala. The World Health Organisation (WHO) on Saturday declared monkeypox a global public health emergency of international concern.
DIMAPUR, JUL 24 (NPN): Rising People’s Party (RPP) has appealed to the UDA government to pay pending salaries of Tuli Paper Mill employees without delay before the employees embark on an agitation on August 12, 2022. The party in a press release also appealed to the conscience of all the 60 legislators to accord top priority to the plight of the paper mill employees, especially considering the fact that Nagaland was a Christian State. Since 1992 when the
mill closed down, the party said the employees had been living a nightmarish existence. According to newspaper reports, the employees had not been paid salary since August 2017 and the State government owed the paper mill employees Rs 27.33 crore as in December 2021. RPP expressed surprise that a government could be so immune to the plight of the employees living like hell on earth for the past 30 years. The party alleged that the UDA gov-
ernment was buying SUVs worth crores of rupees every month and had at its disposal thousands of crores of rupees earned through GST alone. The party quoted NPCC president K Therie, who alleged that the 21 NPF MLAs who were lured into NDPP were each paid Rs 2.50 crore and the money was apparently diverted from MNREGA fund. And as the ruling coalition was yet to refute the allegation, it said the allegation must be true. (Cont’d on p-8)
Police chiefs of NE states vow to work CNSA demands fair distribution of development projects together on insurgency, drug trafficking AGARTALA, JUL 24 (PTI): Insurgency, extremism and drug trafficking have emerged as the major security challenges for the North Eastern states, a senior officer said on Sunday. These issues were discussed at the regional security coordination meeting of the director-generals of police (DGPs) held in Agartala on Saturday, he said. The DGPs resolved at the meeting to work together to address these security concerns, the officer said. The meeting, chaired by Tripura DGP VS Yadav, was attended by DGPs of
Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland and Sikkim. The director of North Eastern Police Academy (NEPA), the joint director of the Intelligence Bureau, and the inspector generals of BSF Tripura Frontier and CRPF Tripura Range were also present in the meeting. Issues such as trafficking of drugs and psychotropic substances, countering terror activities, tackling organised crime, sharing intelligence, and capacity building and police modernisation were discussed in
the meeting, the officer said. “It was resolved to work together to build peace and tranquillity in the Northeastern region,” he said. Dr Atul Ambedkar, in charge of the National Drug Dependence Treatment Centre at AIIMS, discussed various issues related to tackling drug abuse, and ways to formulate drug control policies for the region at the meeting. It was decided to have more frequent interactions among the states of the region to yield better results, the officer said.
DIMAPUR, JUL 24 (NPN): Central Naga Students’ Association (CNSA) has demanded that all development projects and fund distributions be scrutinised and distributed fairly in the overall interest of Nagas. The association comprising three apex student bodies– Ao Students’ Conference (AKM), Lotha Students’ Union (LSU) and Sumi Students’ Union (SKK) – said it was totally appalled by the State government’s funding decisions for a number of projects and initiatives where importance had been given to a certain section of people.
NSF clarifies on Naga Club building issue DIMAPUR, JUL 24 (NPN): Naga Students’ Federation (NSF) has said that Naga Club building in Kohima had been made an “issue of dispute” by some individuals who recently formed a Naga Club and were now not only laying claims as the sole owner of the building in Kohima, but also issuing eviction orders. In a rejoinder to the statement, NSF president Kegwayhun Tep contended that the main allegation was the reported non-payment of a monthly rent of Rs 500 from May 1983 to date. But, it asked how could it pay rent to an organisation
that was formed only in 2017/18. NSF claimed that its then president late Vizolie Sorhie and general secretary Imkong L Imchen, among other officials, were approached by Naga Club office-bearers and Naga Elders Conference to reclaim the Naga Club building that was then occupied by the Forest Department. However, as the department refused to hand over the building to its rightful owner (Naga Club) despite several attempts, the federation said late Sorhie, then finance secretary late Mechimvu Ritse, NSF Ac-
tion Committee member Neingulo Krome and All Nagaland College Students’ Union president Kewezu G Kenye went and broke the lock and occupied the building. Following which, Neivor Rutsa voluntarily provided his vehicle (NLT309) to assist in shifting NSF office to the building, it added. Even when the rent for April 1983 was paid and received by then Naga Club’s general secretary late Vilavor Liegise, NSF claimed it was clearly mentioned “with the good consent of mutual understanding”, which was to facilitate and legitimise that
“Naga Club” was the owner of the building which at that point in time was also being claimed by another group of individuals in the name of another Naga Club, and the dispute was in the court of Kohima deputy commissioner for hearing. Subsequently, the receipt of Rs 500 for April 1983 paid by NSF became proof of evidence and the court ruled in favour of Naga Club, which was never ever contested again. Otherwise, there was “mutual understanding” that the building would always belong to Naga Club and NSF
Central Naga Students’ Association president R Sunep Pongen and vice-president Lipemo M Tsopoe asserted that the secretive and unjustified selfish interests of the government in coordinating and allocating the plans and resources was intolerable and threatening. Since the State government did not exist solely for the benefit of one tribe or one district, the association insisted that all districts should be handled fairly and equally and that the disproportional discrepancies in development activities and disparity should be immediately looked into.
And in order to ensure equity and prevent discrimination, CNSA also demanded that the State government should revoke and review all projects that have already been submitted and approved. According to the association, the partiality and preference allegedly shown by the state government to one particular district had proved that the developmental funds and projects had been “distributed on the basis of tribalism and nepotism”. As such, if the chief minister was unable to take responsibility for all the discrepancies and unable to
Frontier Nagaland: ENPO to hold public rally on August 4
Gov’s intervention sought to frame rules for Lokayukta
DIMAPUR, JUL 24 (NPN): In order to press for the demand of ‘Frontier Nagaland’ Eastern Nagaland Peoples’ Organisation (ENPO) will be holding public rally on August 4 in all seven tribal Hqs. ENPO president R. Tsapikiu Sangtam and general secretary Manlang Phom said the decision comes following a joint consultative meeting of all seven tribal bodies and talk team held on June 28, 2022 at Tuensang Village. The house unanimously reiterated the demand for Frontier (Cont’d on p-8) Nagaland State, it added.
DIMAPUR, JUL 24 (NPN): RTI Initiative has sought governor Prof Jagdish Mukhi’s intervention in the matter of framing rules for Lokayukta and Upa Lokayukta and their employees. In a representation to Mukhi, RTI Initiative’s Odi Jamir and ST Yapang Lkr recalled that the Nagaland Lokayukta Act was passed in 2017 and the governor had subsequently constituted a High Power Committee to give effect to Section 36 of the Act – a) to consider and bring out the
perform his duty as a competent and unbiased person, CNSA said he should step down from his chair on moral grounds. At a time when the state is attempting to find a peaceful political solution, if a significant portion of the Naga population was neglected and deprived for the benefit of a small section of people, the association cautioned that this would not only impede and jeopardise the Naga integration process but also lead to internal conflicts and hostility, the consequences of which the present leaders would have to bear.

However, they regretted that despite the Lokayukta office having started functioning in full swing since the past three years and five months, no such rules has been framed by the State government in respect of the Lokayukta office till today. pandemic and other factors. Kikheto said externally aided projects were important for the state and revealed that a World Banksupported project for the farming sector would be implemented soon. Meanwhile, director of agriculture, Ben Yanthan said climate change
was affecting agriculture and the livelihood of the farmers of the state. He also presented the key findings of baseline survey and exhorted project team members to work towards achievement of project objectives. Govt. teachers urged to provide quality education
DIMAPUR: Accentuating the duties and responsibilities of the teachers in providing quality education to children, Extra Assistant Commissioner (EAC) Chiephobozou, VitokhaYepthomiencouraged government teachers to provide quality education to students. A press release by Educational Block Resource Centre (EBRC Chiephobozou) informed that Yepthomi was speaking at a programme organised by EBRC Chiephobozou on July 22 to distribute school uniform to government schools. “Government teachers are much more qualified compar-
ing to private teachers, but when it come to the quality education private schools are much better than the government schools,” said Yepthomi. He said it was high time for the teachers to retrospect themselves as an educator and bring changes in the society. While emphasising on the duties and responsibilities of the teachers in providing quality education to the children, Yepthomi said it has direct or indirect impact in the upliftment of a civilised society as teachers are the role model in moulding a child life into a good or a bad citizen. He then said that negligence or failure on
the part of the teachers in the fulfilment of their assigned duties and responsibilities would put the future generation in uncertainty and one day would become a burden to the society. Further, Yepthomi said government was providing free uniforms, mid-day meal, text books, library books etc to students so as to give them free and compulsory education under Right to Education (RTE), which is also clearly enshrined in the fundamental rights of the Indian constitution. The programme was chaired by Sub-Divisional Education Officer (SDEO) Chiephobozou, KevizenoSavino while vote of thanks
was delivered coordinator EBRC Chiephobozou, KekhriengulieRulho. The programme was followed by distribution of uniforms which were handed over to schools by EAC Chiephobozou.

Prez Kovind delivers farewell message to nation Cong slams BJP for ‘objectionable’
NEW DELHI, JUL 24 (PTI): Mother nature is in deep agony and the climate crisis can endanger the very future of this planet, outgoing President Ram Nath Kovind said in his farewell address to the nation on Sunday as he appealed to all to protect the environment for the coming generations. Emphasising that the country is getting equipped to make the 21st century “the century of India”, Kovind highlighted the importance of healthcare and education and said these, along with economic reforms, would enable citizens to pursue happiness by discovering their potential. President-elect Droupadi Murmu will be sworn in as the country’s 15th President on Monday. In his last televised address to the nation, Kovind said, “The pandemic has underlined the need to further improve the public healthcare infrastructure. I am glad that the government has accorded top priority to this task. “Once education and healthcare are in place, economic reforms will let
Ram Nath Kovind
citizens find the best course for their lives, he said, adding that “I firmly believe that our country is getting equipped to make the 21st century, the century of India”. He said the National Education Policy will go a long way in making it possible for young Indians to connect with their heritage and also find their feet in the twenty-first century. The president made a special mention of the threat to the environment and asked all citizens to take care of it for future generations. “Mother Nature is in deep agony and the climate
crisis can endanger the very future of this planet. We must take care of our environment, our land, air and water for the sake of our children. “In our daily lives and routine choices, we must be more careful to protect our trees, rivers, seas and mountains as well as all other living beings. As the first citizen, if I have to give one advice to my fellow citizens, it has to be this,” he added. President Kovind also hailed the trinity of ideals of liberty, equality and fraternity, saying they must not be mistaken as abstractions beacause they ‘’are lofty,
noble and uplifting’’. “Our history, not only of modern times but also from ancient times, reminds us that they are real; that they can be realised, and indeed have been realised in different eras. “Our ancestors and founders of our modern nation exemplified the meaning of justice, liberty, equality and fraternity with hard work and an attitude of service. We only have to follow in their footsteps and keep walking,” he said. And what do such ideals mean for a common citizen today? Kovind asked. “I believe the chief goal is to help them discover the joy of living. For that, first of all, their basic necessities must be taken care of,” the president emphasised. During his address, the president went down memory lane to highlight the inherent power of vibrant democratic institutions. Kovind recalled his earlier days when the country had just achieved independence and said, “There was a fresh wave of energy to rebuild the country; there were new dreams. I too
had a dream, that one day I would be able to participate in a meaningful way in this nation-building exercise”. “A young boy living in a mud house could not have any idea about the highest Constitutional office of the Republic. But it is a testament to the strength of India’s democracy that it has created pathways to let each citizen take part in the shaping of our collective destiny. “If that Ram Nath Kovind from village Paraunkh is addressing you today, it is solely thanks to the inherent power of our vibrant democratic institutions,” he said. In his farewell speech on the eve of his completing five-year tenure as the president, Kovind said the founders of our modern nation exemplified the meaning of justice, liberty, equality and fraternity with hard work and an attitude of service, and “we only have to follow in their footsteps and keep walking”. The president said the nation is working with the objective of providing better housing, and access to drinking water and electricity for every family.
remarks against Sonia Gandhi
NEW DELHI, JUL 24 (PTI): The Congress on Sunday demanded an apology from Prime Minister Narendra Modi and BJP chief J P Nadda over BJP spokesperson Prem Shukla’s usage of “indecent language” for Sonia Gandhi, and warned of filing a defamation suit in case this is repeated. In a letter to BJP chief Nadda, Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh said the Congress registers its strong objection to the “abusive and indecent” language used for Gandhi by Shukla during a discussion on a national news channel on July 23. To p l e a d e r s a n d spokespersons of BJP, who talk about culture, have repeatedly used objectionable language against respected women of the country, especially the 75-year-old president of a national party, Ramesh said. “Using abusive words for the leaders of the opposition shows the anti-women thinking of the BJP. Due to such objectionable remarks, the level of politics of the
Jairam Ramesh
country is going down,” he said. Respect for women has been a great tradition of India since Vedic times and therefore decency in politics and respectful behaviour towards women is naturally expected from the ruling BJP, but the party has repeatedly disappointed us with its language and behaviour, Ramesh said in his letter to Nadda. “Our appeal to PM Modi ji and you is to apologise to the women of the country for the shameful and indecent rhetoric of your party leaders, as well as ask your spokespersons and leaders not to hurt the dignity of politics and refrain from abusive language,”
he said. “The repetition of inappropriate language for our President or any other leader will force us to take legal steps such as a defamation suit,” Ramesh warned. Earlier, in a statement, Ramesh said the remarks by Shukla had exposed the BJP’s ‘anti-women’ face. The objectionable language of the BJP’s national spokesperson shows that the BJP neither has respect for women, nor does the party believe in decency in politics, Ramesh said. This is not the first time a BJP leader has used abusive language against women, he said. The country knows that many BJP leaders, including PM Modi, have made “objectionable” comments against the respected women of the country and especially opposition leaders, he alleged. “When a person holding a high office like that of the prime minister lowers the dignity of that office, the spokesperson of his party will naturally use abusive words for opposition leaders,” Ramesh said.

AHMEDABAD, JUL 24 (PTI): Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Sunday urged the public to hoist the national flag atop their houses, shops and factories between August 13 and 15 as part of the Centre’s ‘Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav’ celebration. The programme, as announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, was meant to raise awareness among children and youth about the country’s achievement in terms of development in the last 75 years since independence and to inculcate a sense of patriotism, Shah said at an event in Manipur locality of Ahmedabad. Shah, the Lok Sabha member from Gandhinagar, was speaking after remotely inaugurating a water supply project for Bopal and Ghuma localities under the Ahmedabad Urban Development Authority in Gujarat, where the Assembly polls are due later this year. This will ensure pure Narmada drinking water to 70,000 households, he said. He also inaugurated and laid the foundation stone for 11 different projects worth Rs 211 crore
under his constituency. On the occasion, Shah said the ‘Har Ghar Tiranga’ campaign is to inculcate a new sense of patriotism among India’s youth and make a resolution to take the country to the top by the time it celebrates the centenary of its independence. “The campaign is meant to remember our freedom fighters, known and unknown, and pay tributes to them,” he said. Shah said the national flags will be available in post offices, cooperative societies, municipal corporations, and e-commerce websites, among other places, and the public should hoist the tricolour and post a selfie with it on the central government’s website. As many as 20 crore tricolours will be hoisted across the country during the three-day campaign between August 13 and 15, he said. Shah also spoke about t h e r e d eve l o p m e n t o f Ahmedabad’s Kalupur and Sabarmati railway stations which, he said, will look grand in the next five years. “Narendrabhai (PM Modi) took Gujarat on top in terms of development
Scuffle breaks out in Kashi Vishwanath temple over darshan VA R A NA S I , J U L 2 4 (IANS): A scuffle took place between devotees and four temple servants inside the sanctum sanctorum of the Kashi Vishwanath temple in Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh. The CCTV footage of the incident has now gone viral on the social media. In the footage, temple servants and the two devotees are seen shoving each other in what appears to be the inside area of the Kashi Vishwanath temple. According to reports, the incident took place on Saturday evening, when an ‘aarti’ was underway at the sanctum sanctorum of the temple. The devotees insisted on having a darshan even when the doors were
shut. What started as an argument almost came to blows when the devotees and temple servants started pushing each other inside the sanctorum. The devotees were taken out of the sanctorum and temple servants sent a letter to the temple administration apprising them of the incident. They accused the police of non-cooperation. Meanwhile, the two devotees have filed a police complaint against five people, including the four temple servants, after the incident, alleging assault. A few days ago, there was a similar dispute between the state police and the temple staff regarding darshan. The staff reportedly sat on dharna and the issue was resolved later.

CJI’s verdict on media
here never has been such a stinging comment on the role of Indian television channels in recent times that that made by Chief Justice of India (CJI) N.V.Ramana while speaking at the National University of Study and Research Law at Ranchi. The CJI slammed the electronic media of having “zero accountability,” which has rendered “doing justice” no easy task which has become increasingly challenging. He said media trials in the TV channels cannot be a guiding factor in deciding cases. According to Ramana, what is being observed is how India TV channels were running kangaroo courts at times on issues even experienced judges found difficult to decide. He said ill-informed and agenda-driven debates on issues involving justice delivery were proving to be detrimental to the health of democracy. Ramana described TV debates as biased views being propagated by the anchorpersons and the consequences is that it affects viewers and weakens democracy and harms the institutionalised system. In the process, he said justice delivery gets adversely affected and that when the channels overstep and breach their responsibility, they are taking India’s democracy two steps backward. Ramana had a consolation for the print media which was still has a certain degree of accountability whereas, electronic media has zero accountability as what it shows vanishes into thin air.The CJI was clearly referring to the “noise and not news” channels where fake news become the discourse. This chunk of the Indian media, consisting of more than a dozen 24-hour national and dozens of regional television news channels, who have become notorious for biased reporting, manufacturing and spreading fake news and falsehoods, and causing communal and social strife in the country’s pluralistic society. The above channels are also accused of having a clear bias against the country’s low-caste Hindus, the poor and downtrodden, and less privileged and weaker sections of society, while favouring the rich and powerful and promoting their interests. Almost 80 per cent of the Indian media is biased, arrogant and opinionated. The observations made by the CJI are accurate and very disturbing. Everyday the biased and blatantly pro-government channels denigrate opposition parties. Any criticism of the ruling party is narrated as “anti-nationalist” and any individual challenging or demanding answers from the government is labelled “anti-Indian.”Sometimes, no opportunity is given to government critics when the biased anchorpersons shout them down with a barrage of questions. In one channel, the anchorperson had even gone to the extent of telling a government critic that he won’t allow anything to be said against the ruling party. During heated debates, the anchorpersons themselves become like spokespersons of the ruling party instead of playing their roles as neutral anchorpersons. The reasons for these TV channels having gone bananas for the ruling party are varied. Some channels are owned by corporate houses whose business interests outweigh the journalistic principles. Some have leaders or supports of the ruling party as co-owners while some have reporters and anchorpersons who are either connected to members of the ruling party or who are afraid to remain strictly neutral for fear of being trolled by hordes of pro-government supporters. That is why India’s ranking in the 2022 World Press Freedom Index has fallen to 150 out of 180 countries, according to the latest report released by the global media watchdog, Reporters Without Borders (RSF). This exposed how Indian media has become another tool for propagating divisive ideology which threatens to change the dynamics of democracy.
DailyDevotion His Nature and Our Motives
…unless your righteousness exceeds the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees, you will by no means enter the kingdom of heaven. —Matthew 5:20
The characteristic of a disciple is not that he does good things, but that he is good in his motives, having been made good by the supernatural grace of God. The only thing that exceeds right-doing is right-being. Jesus Christ came to place within anyone who would let Him a new heredity that would have a righteousness exceeding that of the scribes and Pharisees. Jesus is saying, “If you are My disciple, you must be right not only in your actions, but also in your motives, your aspirations, and in the deep recesses of the thoughts of your mind.” Your motives must be so pure that God Almighty can see nothing to rebuke. Who can stand in the eternal light of God and have nothing for Him to rebuke? Only the Son of God, and Jesus Christ claims that through His redemption He can place within anyone His own nature and make that person as pure and as simple as a child. The purity that God demands is impossible unless I can be remade within, and that is exactly what Jesus has undertaken to do through His redemption. No one can make himself pure by obeying laws. Jesus Christ does not give us rules and regulations— He gives us His teachings which are truths that can only be interpreted by His nature which He places within us. The great wonder of Jesus Christ’s salvation is that He changes our heredity. He does not change human nature— He changes its source, and thereby its motives as well.

NAGALAND POST, DIMAPUR MONDAY, JULY 25, 2022
Pricey Russia cuts LNG, wants Dirham
he unstable world energy market, volatile prices, uneven supplies may have repercussions on India’s energy security. The first hit is the GAIL LNG deal followed by Russian demand for payment in UAE dirhams converted in dollar terms. The GAIL’s troubles are traced to the German energy regulator taking over Gazprom Germania, which operates gas to storage and supplies to industries. The move followed Gazprom moving out of the subsidiary so that it could continue business without attracting sanctions. It has led to the default in delivery of five cargos as per a 20-year-deal agreed in 2012 for 2.5 million tonne LNG a year. This has become a problem for GAIL, which meets 50 percent of the nation’s LNG needs. It is scouting for alternative fuel. But it faces the problem of Russia stopping supplies to Gazprom Marketing & Trading that owned the future gas contracts for supplying to Gazprom Germania and other subsidiaries. It used to supply from Yamal LNG facility. After Russia’s stop-
page of supplies, Gazprom GM&T initially managed supplies from its floating international portfolio. As prices rose to $ 40 a unit and supplies to Europe became lucrative it diverted supplies leaving GAIL in the lurch. In fact, the prices are so high that Gazprom Germania is said to have margins after paying damages under the take-or-pay clause. The GAIL has option to take legal recourse but it is cumbersome, may take years and would not address the problems of the Indian consumers. The GAIL has longterm liquefied natural gas (LNG) supply contracts from the US to Australia supplementing domestic gas supplies though it may cost a bit more in the prevailing circumstances. Prior to the war, the US LNG used to cost one-third of the price of gas available in the spot or current market. GAIL has a 5.8 million tonnes per annum LNG contract with US suppliers. These are all linked to the US gas market, where the current rate is $ 10 per million British thermal unit. In comparison, the spot price of LNG in Asia is between $ 37 and $ 40per
million British thermal unit. The GAIL and the petroleum ministry are scouring the markets for ensuring the supply. The Asian LNG prices are rising with intense demand from Japan, Korea and India. Trading activity in the Asia LNG market rose as traders and end-users dipped back into the spot market to secure cargoes amid increasing global supply uncertainty as the Gazprom reduction of gas flow into Europe spooked an already fractured Shivaji market. The world energy markets are seeing too many oddities. India’s domestic exports though have seen curtailment but of late with Russian crude being supplied to the private refiners it is being exported again. The cap through an export tax clamped on July 1 for ensuring at least 50 percent of the private refiners’ production has been removed. The duty, imposed following fuel shortage in a number of states, has been waived on petrol, and cut by a third on diesel and brought down the windfall tax by 27 percent. The tax has been reduced
from Rs 6 to Rs 4 on diesel and done away on petrol. The duty has been waived refined products and shipped from SEZs. This will give a big boost to mainly two private refiners Nyara and Reliance. A major benefit will be to the later as its refining is based in an SEZ in Jamnagar. The duty reduction is also said to benefit ONGC and Oil India and Vedanata. Of late, according to tenders by Indian Oil and Bharat Petroleum, diesel imports are expected to Sarkar rise to its highest since February 202 at over 48,000 barrels per day. India’s increased imports are telling on Asian fuel supply as planned petroleum supplies from China have been decreasing. India is the world’s third-largest oil consumer at about 5 million barrels a day. It is growing at 3-4 percent a year and the demand is likely to go up to 7 million barrels a day in a decade. The Petroleum Planning and Analysis Cell (PPAC), India’s oil import dependence was 85 percent in 2019-20, marginally declined to 84.4 percent in 2020-21 and again has
risen to 85.6 percent in 202122 and in April 2022 it rose to 86.6 percent. This year’s imports are to surge beyond the 212.2 million tonnes of crude last year. The new exploration licences announces are a good move but it may take a decade to start new production. The aim is to reduce imports to 50 percent, too ambitious, by 2030. Apart from long gestation the capital requirement is extremely high. India despite odds remains dependent on Russian oil. India’s crude oil imports from Russia have jumped over 50 times since April and now make up for 10 per cent of all crude bought from overseas. Russian oil made up for just 0.2 per cent of all oil imported by India prior to the Ukraine war. The country is facing some petrol and diesel shortage as fuel pumps have reportedly gone drybin several states including Uttarakhand, Rajasthan, Andhra Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, some parts of eastern and north-eastern states. There have been long queues around fuel pumps in several parts of the country in the last few days as people
rush to fill the fuel tanks of their vehicles. Several petrol pumps in and around Srinagar and Rajasthan have also faced shortages. The USled sanctions on the energy tie-up with Russia have been contested by a number of gas-starved NATO members, including Germany, Europe’s largest economy. Even Japan, the world’s third largest economy after the US and China, says it will maintain oil and gas projects in Russia citing the country’s energy security concerns as the reason. Germany and Japan are the most important US strategic partners in Europe and Asia, respectively. Only a week ago, Japan’s Economy, Trade and Industry Minister Koichi Hagiuda made an emphatic statement that his country “does not intend to withdraw” from oil and liquefied natural gas development projects in Russia as they make a choice between energy security and tightening sanctions on Russia for the war in Ukraine. A neutral India has to trudge through a difficult phase to maintain supplies from Russia and the West as well as keep the domestic prices low.

North East Christian churches and clean politics
t is indeed a welcome news to learn that at least there are few Christian Churches in North East which are deeply pained and concerned with the blatant malpractices in various forms of corruption indulged by state governments, political parties and candidates before and during elections to the State Legislative Assemblies and Parliament. Prominent among them are the Nagaland Baptist Church Council (NBCC) Clean Election Movement and the Presbyterian Church Synod in Mizoram in conjunction with powerful Young Mizo Association. These Christian Churches have taken bold stance with concrete steps to help reduce considerably, if not root out completely, the evils in all forms of corrupt practices before and during elections in their respective states, with the sole aim of bringing in place clean, fair and just elections and governance both in Nagaland and Mizoram. In Nagaland, the NBCC, through its “free and fair” Election movement which started in 1972 which was renomenclatured as “Clean Election Movement” in 2003 it forged ahead with the movement full vigour. NBCC has shouldered upon itself the social, moral and spiritual responsibility to witness Christ in politics by adhering and upholding the principle of truth, spiritual, moral and ethical values and by assisting people (voters) to adhere christian moral and ethical principles in preparations, processes and progress of voting. NBCC has Church Associations’ Units all over the state and each NBCC Association Unit is under a Secretary who is also its Convener and function independently to further the cause of clean elections movement. All Associations within their respective jurisdiction conduct mass awareness campaigns on free, fair and clean elections, trained workers and volunteers to carry forward the aims and objectives of clean elections-clean politics in every nook and corner within the church first. But, when the right time came members have to engage in mass awareness campaigns to promote clean politics in elections among people (voters) in the villages and towns to play non-partisan role in politics, to influence the government and other agencies with strong moral principles which are bablically relevant and conducive for harmonious living. If any church leader, worker, member or church volunteer is found deviating/going contrary to the principles and guidelines of NBCC Clean Election Movement such members will face immediate suspension. The NBCC workers strongly emmphasized among people on the need to elect capable leaders who can manage state’s resources including those inflow from the centre, for the progress and posterity of the people of Nagaland, those who can represent the people with clear christian character, who are trustworthy has integrity, honesty, free from blames and corruption and above all God fearing. The clean election movement of NBCC has tried its best to reach out to all Districts and villages of the state through its committed workers via mass awareness campaigns through publicity materials and by teachings through trained
church workers and volunteers of the movement and at later stage, other fellow church denominations, Civil Societies and NGOs which have the same concern to root out corrupt practices in elections. This has boosted the NBCC movement through networking etc. In fact the NBCC Clean Election Movement has consciously worked for clean elections and clean governance which topped its agenda. It has widely published and circulated certain guidelines to all eligible voters / candidates in the state to remember and follow strictly. Some of the guidelines are : Abstain from indulging in feasts and partying organised by candidates and political parties : avoid soliciting, giving money, liquor, favours for your votes: avoid proxy voting : be ware of indulgence by church leaders : boldly speak against village/ khel / clan common candidates: buying and selling of votes is sinful : clean vote, clean process, clean governance, clean future : campaign against corruption and unfair means : challenge anomalies in Electoral Rolls : call common platforms for parties’ candidates : do not manipulate, misguide, intimidate, threaten other voters against their choice : delete double entries of voters : do not declare your support to any candidate : demonstrate clean Christan character by upholding spiritual, moral, ethical principles and stand firm for the truth and condemn falsehood : be firm in your witness for Christ. Election in Nagaland is perhaps the most expensive exercise in India Considering the geographical and demographic size of the state. Perhaps, the following figures of elections expenses may help the stakeholders like Political Parties - the NDPP, NPP, NPF, NPCC, BJP, AAP, JDU and RPP : the Candidates who have to spend money liberally, people of Nagaland in general and in particular the voters of the state to rethink deeply on the rationality of spending huge amount of money during elections. To understand better the gravity of the lavish mindless expenditure during elections in the state we bring in here the following few figures which will speak for themselves. In the general elections in 2008 in Nagaland the expenditure incurred by candidates and political parties was a whooping sum of Rs. 561.10 core, in 2013 it went up to Rs. 937.82 core and in 2018 it further shot up to Rs.1660.90 core. These figures were given by NBCC Clean Election Movement reportedly taken from YouthNet. Why this criminal waste of precious resources which should have been spent for the much required development of the state in critical sectors ? In spite of all the hard work and bold initiatives taken by the NBCC and later on joined in by different Church denominations, Civil societies and some NGOs besides the watchful eyes of Election Commission of India to have free, fair and clean elections, yet the elections in Nagaland are not so free and fair because there are still many inhibitions, hiccups and stumbling blocks that stand in the way. Some of these as admitted openly by some important functionaries of NBCC, are clan, khel, village and community consensus candidates politics, money and muscle power which include intimidation tactics,
proxy voting, bribing, demanding money from candidates etc. Now it is up-to the voters of Nagaland to decide once and for all: whether they still want to participate in the elections with all these inhibitions and deformities or to participate in the exercise freely and willingly without fear or favour dissatisfaction or ill feelings On the contrary the elections in Mizoram are exceptionally free, fair and just as claimed by many sections in that state and outside including government authorities. Congratulations to the people of Mizoram especially, the Presbyterian Church, the Young Mizo Association and the Civil societies. How is this possible ? The answer is simple. Because free, fair and just elections (clean elections) has become a people’s movement : each voter has vouched to make each election clean because each one has understood his/her valuable sacred democratic right of franchise. This has come about as a result of many factors and it is too long a list to enumerate the factors in this limited space. But the major credit for clean elections in Mizoram is due to the hard and zealous works of the Mizoram Peoples’ Forum (MPF) which consists of the MUP, YMA, MHIP, YLA, MTP, MPC, R. C, ECI, ECM, LIKBK, Wesleyan Methodist and EFIT. It is indeed their commitment, dedication, unity, co-operation, co-ordination and understanding to ensure clean, fair, just, free and successful elections in Mizoram in the past and it will continue to be so even in future as long as the MPF exist. However, specific mention must be made here, that the prime movers and the engine of the bold initiatives for free, fair and just ( clean elections or clean politics) in Mizoram definitely comes from the Presbyterian Church Synod and the Young Mizo Association. The rest of the NGOs and Civil Societies which together constitute the MPF, come later to form a powerful lobby to ensure smooth preparations, processes, participation and conduct of elections. The fact that each and every election in Mizoram is free, fair, just and clean from all sorts of fear and favours, evil designs and devices, corruption and corrupt practices is because of the ability to organise, guard, supervise, monitor and control by the MPF right through up-to the booth level. Another important aspect that must be prominently highlighted in connection with elections in Mizoram is the fact that all political parties, including Independents, and the MPF have to agree to work together and cooperate to ensure clean, free, fair and just elections by working and adhering to the rules and provisions laid down by the MPF to be signed by representatives of political parties, Independents (if there are any) and the representatives of MPF. This is called signing of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). The signing of the MoU with all political parties applies not only for the Assembly elections but also for MP, District Council, Aizwal Municipal Corporation, Aizwal Local Council and even Village Council Elections. It is of utmost importance to highlight some important points contained in the MoU prepared and laid down by the powerful body, the MPF. Some of which are
taken from ECI strictures. Foremost is that each stakeholder involved in the election should ensure that it is clean, fair and just, each voter should cast his/her vote willingly, freely and no free transport from candidates or their agents is allowed to reach the polling booth. It asked candidates to strictly adhere to the ceiling of expenditure, no cash, no favours, no gifts in cash or kind to any individual or groups even teas and snacks are not allowed to be served during or after meetings: flags, posters, banners, badges are strictly regulated and fixed in size and number and places to be displayed. Strictly, the provisions in the MoU disallowed picnics, partying, borrowing or taking foodstuffs from shops during elections lest it leads to corrupt tactics played by candidates. Once elections are declared by EC parties and candidates are not allowed to hold elections processions and rallies, even public election campaigns and common platforms are held and organised only under the guidance and supervision by the MPF members: even house to house canvassing can be held only with the supervision of members of MPF. Public entertainers are not allowed to campaign in elections : misuse of social media to spread false propaganda, misinformation, misrepresentation etc are banned and not permitted by MPF and also punishable by law. Besides, manifestoes, policy and programmes which are false and which cannot be fulfilled are totally banned even by ECI. On setting up of candidates by political parties the MPF is very strict by putting forward certain stringent conditions. Parties are pointedly asked not to set up people of disrepute, having infamous character and having adverse antecedents, having criminal records, infidelity backgrounds, unstable character, unsound mind, quarrelsome and other antisocial records in society. However, MPF values candidates which are law abiding, righteous, religious, educated and cooperative, with good reputation, blameless, trustworthy, capable and free from corruption. Yes, it is a fact that the Election Commission of India conducts elections in Mizoram through the election machinery of the Mizoram state but the responsibility shouldered by the MPF to ensure clean, free, fair and just elections is indeed stupendously great and praise worthy through out. It has made the task of the ECI and the Mizoram state Election machinery very light and very easy. Actually it is the MPF that is running the whole show right from the time of announcement of the election schedules till the time of voting. In fact the whole elections processes and electioneering is closely monitored by MPF. Violation by any candidate or his election agent / canvassers of any rule and provision contained in the MoU agreed and signed by the parties involved invites strict action by MPF and unfair practice is declared publicly in the concerned constituency / constituencies wherever the violation or breach has occurred. Lastly, let us come to Meghalaya which is not purely a Christian state but generally called so because majority of its population of about 76 per cent are Christians. Here, there are so many Christian denominations but the major christian
denominations are the Catholics, the Presbyterians and the Baptists. So far the Christian church in Meghalaya as a whole, has not taken any definite and clear stance on having clean, free, fair and just elections just like that of Nagaland and Mizoram. Neither did it jointly or otherwise, issued any standing written instructions or notifications to that effect (i.e to ensure clean, free, fair and just elections and politics) to the Christian faithfuls to follow and practise accordingly. Once in a blue moon a loose entity by the name Khasi-Jaintia Church Leaders Forum appeared in the scene from nowhere appealing political parties of Meghalaya to reign on their elected legislators to restrain corruption and ensure probity in public life. Once or twice during last 50 years this Forum has appealed the public of Meghalaya through media to elect capable and god fearing public representatives to the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly. That is all from the Christian Church as a whole. What each christian denomination did in their church units with regard to clean elections and clean politics is not known since nothing has come out so far in the open till this day. What all eligible christians voters in Meghalaya know, like nonchristian voters do, is to obediently exercise their right to franchise on polling day notified by the ECI. On malpractices, corruption and corrupt practices before and during elections to Parliament, State Assembly and District Councils, Meghalaya is not at all free from these evils, but certainly nowhere near the scale of Nagaland. But regarding voting on polling days it has been found over the years that they are certainly free and to a large extend fair and peaceful. However, the diabolical tactics and corrupt practices indulged by political parties, candidates their sponsors, financiers and agents are rampant. Favours, gifts and money are still very attractive to voters for exchange for votes and at times even enblock voters are won over by such baits. Religion is still a factor at play even today during choice for candidates at party levels and during casting of votes. The major reason as to why clean, transparent and accountable governance is absent in the state and also why high prevalent of mal-practices and corruption before and during elections is because the Christian churches here are afraid to come out openly and take head on against the government and its agencies to speak out and condemn openly against corruption and various evils which are connected with it. The same thing happened with elections, the Christian churches sit back and stay in their own comfort zones and just watch the drama from afar. This indifference embolden the perpetrators of the wrongs and evil doers both in times of elections and in times of governance. The worst worry and fear for the foreseeing and well meaning people of Meghalaya is to act and pray that the Legislative Assembly will never be filled up and dominated by beureacrat-business class nexus turned politicians as you can very well imagine what the future will hold for the 36 lakh ambitious people of the state if such a thing happens. India will emerge victorious in any war: Rajnath
JAMMU, JUL 24 (PTI): Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Sunday said India is well-equipped to give a befitting reply to “anyone who casts an evil eye on us” and expressed confidence that the country will emerge victorious in case of any war. Pitching for reclaiming Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK), Singh said that it is a part of India and will continue to remain part of this country. “I want to tell you with confidence that if any foreign powers cast an evil eye on us and if there is a war, we will become victorious,” Singh said during an event organised to commemorate ‘Kargil Vijay Diwas’ here. He said that India defeated Pakistan in all the wars since 1947 and after bitter defeat, they engineered proxy wars. “After tasting defeats in direct wars of 1965 and 1971, Pakistan adopted the path of proxy war. For over two decades, it has tried to ‘bleed India with a thousand cuts’. But, time and again, our brave soldiers have shown that no one can disturb the unity, integrity and sovereignty of India,”

Singh said, assuring the nation that the armed forces are ready to face all future challenges. A strong and confident new India is well-equipped to give a befitting reply to anyone who casts an evil eye, he said. “India has become a strong and confident nation which is well-equipped to protect its people from anyone who tries to cast an evil eye on us,” the defence minister said. Singh said that during the wars with Pakistan and China, people of Jammu and Kashmir stood by their forces. “Whether one is Hin-
du or Muslim, all stood by their forces. We cannot forget,” he said. Paying tributes to the freedom fighters and the armed forces personnel who have laid down their lives since Independence in the service of the nation, Singh stated that it was the spirit of national pride at the core of their values that protected the unity and integrity of India. He asserted that the sole aim of Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led government is to safeguard the interests of the nation and it has taken a series of steps to develop a selfreliant defence ecosystem
that provides indigenous state-of-the-art weapons and equipment to the armed forces to fight all kinds of future wars. Sharing his views on the numerous challenges faced by India post-Independence, Singh said the entire area of Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) and Ladakh became the “main war theatre” during 1948, 1962, 1965, 1971 and 1999 wars, when enemies tried to cast an evil eye, but their plans were thwarted by the gallant Indian soldiers. The defence minister also spoke about the brave deeds of Brigadier Usman and Major Somnath Sharma in 1948; Major Shaitan Singh’s valour in 1962; India’s historic victory in 1971 war and the contribution of Kargil bravehearts Captain Vikram Batra and Captain Manoj Pandey who laid down their lives to protect the unity and integrity of India and “continue to be an inspiration to the people, especially the youth”. He also paid respects to the Indian soldiers who displayed unmatched bravery during the Galwan valley incident and ensured
that the Indian tricolour continues to fly high. Singh remembered the then Prime Minister late Atal Bihari Vajpayee for his leadership and words of encouragement to the armed forces personnel during the Kargil war despite numerous challenges and international pressure. He also made special mention of the support extended by the people of J&K to the armed forces, commending their commitment to safeguard the interests of the nation like all other states. The defence minister stated that J&K will always be an integral part of India and the government is ensuring that the Union territory, like the rest of the country, touches newer heights of progress. Terming Article 370 as an artificial legal barrier, he asserted that its abrogation brought a new dawn of hope to the dreams and aspirations of the people of J&K, especially the youth. The decision opened new avenues for the welfare of the people and the UT is now progressing at a much faster rate, he said.
Parliamentarians must introspect if disruption is ‘legitimate tactic’: Tewari
NEW DELHI, JUL 24 (PTI): With frequent adjournments affecting parliamentary work, Congress MP Manish Tewari on Sunday said MPs should seriously introspect whether disruption is at all a “legitimate tactic”, asserting that it should only be used in an “extreme situation” and not become the norm. He, however, said it is the responsibility of the government to run the House, and putting the blame for frequent adjournments on the Congress is both “unfortunate and opportunistic”, as the BJP and its allies had stalled Parliament during their time as the opposition during 2004-14. In an interview with PTI, Tewari suggested that as a norm after the government business is over at 6 pm, a discussion should be allowed under rule 193 in Lok Sabha on any subject collectively decided by the Opposition. “I had even suggested in an informal conversation with the Speaker (Om Birla) that as a norm after the government business is over at 6
Manish Tewari
pm, a discussion under rule 193 on any subject, collectively suggested by the Opposition, should be taken up every working day of Parliament between 6 pm and 9 pm,” he said. Similarly, a discussion could take place in RS under the concurrent rule, Tewari added. This will ensure that the government business functions in an uninterrupted manner and the Opposition is also able to articulate its concerns on the matters before the country, the Congress MP said, adding that unfortunately, it seems the treasury benches are not too enthusiastic and would rather just “railroad” their own business than allowing the Opposition’s concerns be discussed as well. On disruption rather than debate becoming the
norm in Parliament with the first week of the Monsoon session nearly washed out, Tewari said, “Parliament as an institution and legislative assemblies collectively have unfortunately become irrelevant to the national discourse of the country now going back a couple of decades.” This is primarily because parliamentarians and legislators across parties, across decades and across the country have systematically devalued the institution, he said. “ W h a t wo u l d yo u think of an institution where disruption is the norm and functioning is the exception? What would you think of the Supreme Court if lawyers were to disrupt its functioning on a regular basis? What would you think of the executive if the secretaries, joint secretaries or other officials go on a disruptive spree on a regular and prolonged basis,” Tewari asked. So, parliamentarians and legislators should seriously introspect whether disruption is at all a “legitimate parliamentary tactic”, the Congress MP said.

in public life, and also to outrage her modesty and that of her daughter,” the notice said. The Congress leaders stooped to a new low, morally and ethically, by attacking Irani’s young daughter who is in her first year at university and at the threshold of a new chapter of her life pursuing her professional aspirations, the notice sent by Irani said. “These aspirations of our client’s (Irani) daughter are sought to be cruelly marred, jeopardised and prejudiced by the addressees (Congress leaders) through their inhumane, insensitive and false narratives as collateral damage,” it said. “The insistence of addressees to invoke value systems of our client with a reference to her ‘sanskar’ is an effort to make our client and her young daughter social outcasts by proclaiming that by the act of ‘running’ a bar our client and her young daughter are women of disrepute,” it said.
NEW DELHI, JUL 24 (PTI): Union minister Smriti Irani on Sunday sent a legal notice to Congress leaders Jairam Ramesh and Pawan Khera, asking them to apologise for their “baseless and false” allegations against the BJP leader and her daughter. Irani’s action came a day after the Congress leaders alleged that her 18-yearold daughter Zoish Irani ran a bar illegally in Goa and also targeted the minister over this, demanding that PM Modi sack her from his Cabinet. If they do not tender an unconditional and unequivocal apology and withdraw their allegations, Irani will initiate civil and criminal proceedings against them, the legal notice said. The notice has also been sent to ‘Mahila’ Congress leader Netta D’Souza and the Congress party. “The false allegations were intended to hurt the reputation of our client as a minister and a person

KOLKATA, JUL 24 (PTI): JSW Steel expects scrapping of export duty on the metal soon and foresees that the price will remain “firm” with a revival in demand by 7-8 per cent in the second quarter of the current fiscal, a top company official said. The industry witnessed a de-growth by 4.5 per cent in the domestic market in the April-June period of the 2022-23 fiscal, he claimed. The steel major also said that there would be no “cut” in its capital expenditure (capex) plans for the purpose of growth, but only discretionary and non-essential special projects have been calibrated till the market situation normalises. JSW had announced a reduction in capex by Rs 5,000 crore to Rs 15,000
crore in the current fiscal. “Steel demand in the ongoing Q2 period is expected to be 7-8 per cent higher for the industry with a revival of re-stocking activity from July. Our profitability will also improve over the Q1FY’23. “But the maximum benefit of raw material price moderation can only be realised in the SeptemberDecember period,” JSW joint MD and Group CFO Seshagiri Rao told PTI in an interview. JSW profit slumped 85 per cent in the April-June quarter to Rs 839 crore due to a “2.5-time jump in raw material cost, decline in steel prices and export duty”, he said. Steel prices had corrected by 20 per cent in both domestic and international markets.

NSF alleged that this same Naga Club was now issuing notice to vacate the building on or before August 27, 2022 in the middle of the celebrations, which was turning the celebrations into a nightmare. The student body asserted that the present incumbent who had only occupied the office from its predecessors and would be passing the responsibilities on to upcoming leaders had nothing to gain or to lose from such disputes. But it warned that history would be unkind if greed and falsehood were allowed to triumph. It declared that it had and would always remain steadfast in upholding the interests of Naga youth and all Nagas in general for unified “Lim” and glory of Nagas.

Insurance companies made Rs 40,000 crore in 5 years under PMFYB scheme
NEW DELHI, JUL 24 ( AG E N C I E S ) : U n d e r the central government’s flagship scheme, Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana (PMFBY), insurance companies had made around Rs 40,000 crore between 2016-17 and 2021-22, according to a media report on Saturday. According to the Times of India report, Narendra Singh Tomar, Union minister for agriculture, said the companies paid claims worth Rs 119,314 crore to farmers against the total premium collection of Rs 159,132 crore under PMFBY. For the implementation of the scheme, the government roped in 18 general
insurance companies, aimed to provide financial support to farmers suffering crop loss or damage arising out of natural calamities. “Since inception of the scheme till Kharif 2021- 22 season, Rs 4,190 per hectare has been paid as claims to farmers under the scheme,” Tomar said in a written response to Rajya Sabha,
accessed by the Times of India. Launched six years ago, the scheme was revamped in 2020, enabling voluntary participation of the farmers. Under PMFBY, farmers pay 2 per cent of the sum insured as their share of premium for kharif crops, 1.5 per cent for rabi crops and 5 per cent for horticulture and commercial crops.

during the July-September quarter due to multiple headwinds including weakening India BoP dynamics and Fed hikes during the year. Crisil expects the rupee to be under pressure in the near term and the rupeedollar exchange rate will remain volatile with depreciation bias in the near-term due to widening of the trade deficit, FPI outflows, and strengthening of the US dollar index owing to rate hikes by the US Fed and safehaven demand for the dollar amid geopolitical risks. “However, the pressure may ease towards the end of the fiscal, as crude oil prices are expected to come down, and the Fed slows its rate hike spree. Hence, we expect the exchange rate to settle to 78/USD by March 2023, compared with 76.2/ USD in March 2022, with a lot of volatility thrown in between now and then,” Crisil principal economist Dipti Deshpande said.

assessed is that the rupee could settle somewhere around 79 to a dollar. That will be the average price for the entire year...in the current depreciating cycle, the rupee may fall to over 81/ USD in the current political situation,” India Ratings & Research principal economist Sunil Kumar Sinha told PTI. Amidst a rebound in crude oil prices and the expectation that the US dollar will remain relatively strong in the immediate term, ICRA expects the rupee may weaken to 81/ USD in Q2 FY2023. “Subsequently, global sentiment and the direction of foreign portfolio investment (FPI) flows will determine if the Indian rupee continues to depreciate in the remainder of the year, or if US recession fears eventually arrest the dollar strength,” ICRA Chief Economist Aditi Nayar said. According to Nomura, the rupee may see 82 level
(From p-1) station lacked basic facilities to be a termination point such as– AC coach, proper water supply, cleaning etc. Although there are around 3000 to 4000 passengers every day at Dimapur railway station, it has been allotted only 12 seats for 1st AC, 140 for 2nd AC, 347 for 3rd AC, 583 for Sleepers, 50 for AC Chairs and 186 for 2nd Class Sitting. Dimapur passengers are compelled to buy tickets at counters or online from quotas of Jorhat, Mariani or Tinsukia etc. The revenue will not be credited to Dimapur but to these stations in Assam. This is one way where Dimapur railway station’s revenue earning for NFR which till 2020 was the second highest has gone down even though the volume of travelling passengers remains high. Once the Silchar-Jiribam route goes functional, revenue generation at Dimapur would be affected. When that happens, Manipur would have the option of skirting Dimapur to haul its goods via Silchar. The systemic step-motherly treatment meted out to Dimapur can be seen in the manner in which NFR has taken away some trains meant for Dimapur passengers. The NFR has ‘hijacked’ Nagaland Express introduced on November 5, 2011, between Kamakhya Junction to Dimapur Railway Station (DMV) and terminating (holding back) at Dimapur. Presently Nagaland Express has been taken to Ledo in 2020 and now terminates at Ledo instead of Dimapur. The train is the only express (non-stop train) especially allotted for Dimapur. It may be recalled that NFR had also “hijacked” Dimapur-Guwahati Jan Shatabdi allotted during 1996-97 to Jorhat. The only train stopping at Dimapur (out of nearly 30 other trains) is B.G. EXPRESS – 15666, DIMAPUR (DMV) To GUWAHATI (GHY). Officials of NFR have said many times about plans to make Dimapur railway station into a world class station. However, the difference between promise and delivery appears to be too wide. While other state governments fight even to establish a small station, the state government seems to be more interested in projects rather than genuinely promoting existing rail and air travel to boost trade and tourism.

NEW DELHI, JUL 24 (PTI): Indian rupee may further depreciate to 82 to a dollar in the near term due to widening of trade deficit and expected aggressive rate hike by the US Fed later this week to tame record high inflation, economists said. There is widespread speculation that the US Fed in its July 26-27 meeting may increase the interest rate by 50-75 basis points, which could result in flight of capital from emerging nations like India. With dollar outflow and elevated level of crude oil prices, the rupee would see further depreciation. Last week, the rupee depreciated to a life-time low of 80.06 a dollar. Economists are of the opinion that the rupee after touching a life-time low may settle around 78 to a dollar by March next year with stability around crude oil prices and likely improvement in geopolitical situation. “Overall what we had

G L A S G OW, J U L 2 4 (IANS): The entire board of Cricket Scotland on Sunday resigned with immediate effect ahead of the release of a racism report in the sport. The board sent the letter of resignation to the Interim Chief Executive Officer Gordan Arthur on Sunday morning ahead of the report to be published on Monday, coming after multiple allegations of racism and discrimination by players Majid Haq and Qasim Sheikh were made last year. In November last year, Haq, Scotland’s all-time leading wicket-taker, told Sky Sports News that Cricket Scotland was “institutionally racist”, while former team-mate Qasim Sheikh claimed he had also suffered racist abuse. Aamer Anwar, their lawyer, said to Sky the report could prove “devastating” for Cricket Scotland. A spokesperson for Cricket Scotland reacted to the board’s en masse resignation by saying, “Cricket Scotland will work in partnership with sportscotland with immediate effect to ensure appropriate governance, leadership and support is in place for the organisation and the sport in the days ahead. These arrangements will be reviewed after the publication of the report into racism in cricket in Scotland and updates given accordingly.” K Y M C

DOES CLEARING ANY STAGE OF NPSC, ALONE MAKE ONE AN EXCELLENT TEACHER FOR CIVIL SERVICE EXAMS?
Having cleared any stages of UPSC/NPSC does not necessarily signify the quality of teaching of a faculty. In NICSE’s decade long experience in NAGALAND, ASSAM & DELHI, we have observed that no matter how many times and how many stages a faculty has cleared UPSC/NPSC, all that matters most to become an excellent teacher in this field are, depth of knowledge, teaching skills, ability to predict questions, ability to micro-analyse a topic and ability to inculcate every subject matter in the classroom in the simplest manner. These form the basic selection criterion for a faculty at NICSE. Becoming an excellent teacher and cracking an exam are two different ball games. All one needs is a great teacher to strengthen the fundamentals so that one can tackle any question in Prelim as wells as Mains

Leclerc had looked set to control after leading early from pole and had withstood a Verstappen onslaught before his race - and his championship bid - took a huge turn on the 18th lap thanks to a costly unenforced error. The 24-year-old driver lost control of his Ferrari car at Turn 11 and spun into the barriers, prompting gasps from a sell-out crowd and a huge outcry of emotion from Leclerc on team radio. Verstappen stayed out and inherited the lead, Hamilton and Red Bull’s Sergio Perez pitting and giving chase for the restart. Championship leader Verstappen led comfortably

gold medal-winning mark of 90.54m while Tokyo 2020 silver medallist Jakub Vadlejch won the bronze with 88.09m. The 24-year old Chopra had earlier made the cut for the final courtesy an 88.39m mark in the qualification. Meanwhile, Neeraj Chopra, who clinched the historic silver medal at the 2022 World Athletics Championships, is elated from his performance and said that there is a hunger inside him to win gold in next edition of worlds competition. “I am happy to have won silver, the country’s first medal in the World Athletics Championships after 19 years, I will take it. World Championships is even tougher than Olympics, its record is higher than that of Olympics,” said Neeraj after his World Championships heroics. The 24-year-old Indian further said, one cannot get gold each time but he will focus and concentrate on training and improvement in order to win the yellow medal in next year’s World Championships. “An athlete cannot win a gold every time but
we have to keep trying and give our best. I have learned a lot from the challenging situation today, and I will work for improvement,” Chopra said. “I have won gold at all levels except this World Championships silver. So, hunger is there to win gold. I will try to change the color of the metal (to gold) in the next World Championships in 2023 (in Budapest). The other competition I want to win gold in is the Diamond League,” he added. When asked to whom he would dedicate the silver medal, the star athlete said, “Anju Bobby George madam won India’s first medal? Everybody who has played a part in my success and those who are praying for my success, I would like to dedicate to them.” Neeraj also mentioned that he spoke to Pakistani athlete Arshad Nadeem who finished fifth with a best throw of 86.16m. “I spoke to him after the end of the event and told him that he had performed well. He said he had problems with his elbow. He was not doing well at the start so I told him he made a good comeback,” he said.

Hope, who was dismissed cheaply in first ODI, played the role of the anchor to perfection as he added 65 runs off 55 balls for the opening wicket with Kyle Mayers (39), before forging another 62 with Shamarh Brooks (35). While Mayers and Brooks showed promise, Hope found his perfect ally in skipper Pooran, who showed his big-hitting prowess during his 74 off 77 balls with the help of six maximums and one four. The two shared a 117-run stand off 126 balls. Hope 135-ball knock comprised eight fours and three maximums. Spin duo of Axar Patel (1/40) and Deepak Hooda (1/42) were the best bowlers on display, while Yuzvendra Chahal (1/69) too scalped one but was expensive. Mohammed Siraj (0/47) was decent but Avesh Khan had a forgettable ODI debut, while

Shardul Thakur (3/54) made amends in the back end with three wickets after conceding 13 in the first over. Opting to bat, Mayers and Hopes gave West Indies a good start with the former taking the attack to the opposition. Hooda produced the first breakthrough with Mayers hitting the first delivery straight back to the bowler. Brooks and Hopes then looked to build a partnership with Hooda and Patel bowling in tandem, targeting the stumps. The spin duo did well to tighten things up as WI managed just 42 from the 10th to 20th over. Chahal was taken to the cleaners in the 21st over with Hope and Brooks smashing a six and a four.
But Dhawan brought back Patel and he produced a wicket-maiden to get rid off Brooks with the Indian skipper taking a low catch. Chahal redeemed himself in his next over as he induced a top-edge off Brandon King, who paid the price for going for a slog sweep too early in his innings. Pooran and Hope then brought up the 150 in the 28th over. The opener took the initiative, picking up three boundaries and also slog-swept Chahal for a six to reach his fifty. Hope unleashed two sixes in two balls off Chahal en route his century, while Rovman Powell (13) and Romario Shepherd (14) played some lusty blows to take WI across the 300-mark.

Arsenal hammer Chelsea 4-0; Haaland scores in Man City win
after scoring a goal.
LONDON/ WISCONSIN (US), JUL 24 (AGENCIES/IANS): Gabriel Jesus scored his fourth pre-season goal but later went off injured as Arsenal hammered four past Chelsea while in another encounter Erling Haaland scored the only goal in Manchester City 1-0 win over Bayern Munich on Saturday night. The Gunners capped their tour of America by laying down a marker against their Premier League rivals in front of a record 63,811 fans at Orlando’s Camping World Stadium just two weeks before the new season.Jesus continued his fine
pre-season form since signing from Manchester City with a delicate chip over Edouard Mendy to open the scoring after 15 minutes. Martin Odegaard, having seen his free-kick tipped over by Mendy, then found a way past the Senegal goalkeeper with a low finish from Gabriel Martinelli’s pass. Mason Mount hit a post with Chelsea’s only chance of the first-half as Arsenal’s new signing Oleksandr Zinchenko impressed before being subbed at the break. Bukayo Saka tapped in a third during the second half from a rebound fol-
lowing Mendy’s save from Granit Xhaka’s volley before Albert Sambi Lokonga added the gloss with an injury-time header. Chelsea’s new signing Kalidou Koulibaly impressed during a 17-minute cameo but Thomas Tuchel was furious with his side’s worrying display. Mikel Arteta, meanwhile, has seen Arsenal win all four of their pre-season matches in style although will be hoping the £45m Jesus will be fit for their season opener against Crystal Palace live on Sky Sports after the striker signalled to the bench just before the
hour mark that he needed to be substituted. “He got a knock in the first-half in his quad I think and it wasn’t very comfortable to continue and, obviously, we didn’t take any risks today,” Arteta explained. Haaland scores on debut for Man City
New signing Erling Haaland is not surprised by his goal on his debut for Manchester City as he has been seeing himself in these
kinds of situations. Haaland made a bang during his debut for City, scoring the game’s only goal after just 11 minutes and 45 seconds on the pitch and helping his side win against Bayern Munich in the pre-season friendly on Saturday night. The 22-year old, who joined City for 51.2 million pounds from Borussia Dortmund, was helped with a cross from man-of-thematch Jack Grealish, which the Norway international was able to convert from short range. “Of course I have been seeing myself in these kinds of situations so

I’m not surprised,” Haaland told Sky Sports. City boss Pep Guardiola praised Haaland’s instinct but said the forward needed to be handled carefully to aid his return to full fitness. The footballer had earlier missed the first match of City’s US tour, against Mexico’s Club America, with injury niggles. “He scored a goal, which is important. These types of goals in front of the keeper -- always he’s there. The first minutes, he needs more rhythm and time but already he had 45 minutes which is good for him,” Guardiola said. “We’ll see how he reacts to the niggles that he had in the previous weeks. After we come back we have long weeks to prepare every weekend game. In those two or three weeks we will get the best form,” he added. The match, held at Wisconsin’s Lambeau Field -- home of top NFL team the Green Bay Packers -was delayed for 15 minutes by a thunderstorm, and play was suspended until further notice shortly after Haaland’s goal.
