Covid in India may be entering endemic stage

NEW DELHI, AUG 24 (AGENCIES): COVID-19 in India may be entering some kind of stage of endemicity where there is low or moderate level of transmission going on, chief scientist of the World Health Organisation Dr Soumya Swaminathan said. The endemic stage is when a population learns to live with a virus. It’s very different from the epidemic stage when the virus overwhelms a population. In an inter view to Karan Thapar for news website The Wire, Swaminathan said given the size of India and heterogeneity of population and immunity status in different parts of the country, it is “very very feasible” that the situation may continue like this with ups and downs in various parts of the nation. “We may be entering some kind of stage of endemicity where there is low level transmission or moderate level transmission going

on but we are not seeing the kinds of exponential growth and peaks that we saw a few months ago,” she said. “As far as India is concerned that seems to be what is happening and because of size of India and heterogeneity of population and immunity status in different parts of country in different pockets, it is very very feasible that the situation may continue like this with ups and downs in different parts of the country, particularly where there are more susceptible population, so those groups who were perhaps less affected by first and second waves or those areas with low levels of vaccine coverage we could see peaks and troughs for the next several months,” she said. She said she hopes that by the end of 2022 “we would be in that position that we have achieved vaccine coverage, say 70 per cent, and then countries can get back to normal”.

On prevalence of Covid among children, Swaminathan said parents need not panic. “We can take from the sero survey and what we learnt from other countries also that while it is possible that children could get infected and transmit, children luckily have very mild illness most of the time and there is a small percentage that gets sick and get inflammatory complications and few will die but much much less than the adult population…But it is good to prepare… preparing hospitals for paediatric admissions, paediatric intensive care is going to serve

our health system in many ways for other illnesses children have but we should not panic about thousands of children crowding into ICUs,” she said. On use of drugs like Remdesivir, HCQ or Ivermectin for treatment, she said as of now, there is no evidence that HCQ or Ivermectin have any role to play in reducing mortality or morbidity in people infected with the virus or actually preventing people from getting infection, so therefore there are no grounds on which recommendations can be made in use of either of these drugs for treatment or prevention. “Solidarity trial showed Remdesivir does not reduce mortality, it may have a marginal benefit in subgroup of patients who are ill enough to need oxygen but not ill enough to be on ventilation so there may be a marginal benefit but certainly Remdesivir does not do much

in stage of moderately or severely ill patients. It is also very expensive. Drugs like Dexamethasone and Oxygen are the two essential ones that save lives,” she added. On clearance to Covaxin, she said she is fairly confident that the WHO’s technical group will be satisfied to give Covaxin clearance to be one of its authorised vaccines and that could happen by mid-September. “The Bharat Biotech submitted their data in the third week of July which was the first data set, then there was an updated data set that came in the middle of August. The committee has gone back to the company with some questions which they must be in process of answering now. I think the technical advisory group that ultimately approves will meet in the first 10 days of September and so we are hoping it happens soon after that,” she said.

Naga Tribunal may not be required, says Nagaland Dobashis’ Association

D I M A P U R , AU G 2 4 (NPN): Nagaland Dobashis’ Association (NDA) has appealed to the State government to enact and insert the Third Amendment Act, 1984 in the Nagaland Code at the earliest and pave way for constituting customary courts in consonance with the customary practices and usages of the Nagas. “This will undoubtedly strengthen the function and essence of the courts in dispensing justice to the people, and the purpose of establishing Naga Tribunal may not be required,” it added. In a press note, NDA NDA general secretary R KemerioYanthan stated that the Third Amendment Act, 1984 failed to find a page in the ‘Nagaland Code’ till date, which might have delayed or hampered constituting the customary courts in Nagaland. Mentioning that Naga(Cont’d on p-8) land, as per the third Amendment Act, 1984 of ‘the Rules for Administration of Justice and Police in Nagaland 1937’, chapter IVA, should have three courts viz, i) village courts, ii) subordinate district customary courts and

MUMBAI, AUG 24 (PTI): Union minister Narayan Rane was arrested on Tuesday over his controversial remarks against Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray, which triggered a political row and protests. Rane had said that he would have slapped Thackeray over the latter’s ignorance of the year of India’s independence. After his arrest, Rane was taken to Mahad in Raigad district where he was likely to be produced before a court, police sources said. FIR at Mahad was registered under IPC sections 189, 504 and 505. The arrest followed Rane’s statement targeting Thackeray in Raigad district during the Jan Ashirwad Yatra on Monday. “It is shameful that the chief minister does not know the year of independence. He leaned back to enquire about the

SUD: Extending support to NFHRCC resolution, the Sangtam Union Dimapur (SUD) urged the state government to respond to the cry of its people by making the foot hill road pliable. SUD president Nukshiba Sangtam and asst. general secretary Mongli Sangtam maintained that foothill road, which affects districts of Dimapur, Wokha, Mokokchung, Zunheboto and the Eastern Nagaland, was a ‘people’s Project’ and would benefit all the Nagas in general. SUD affirmed that it would be forced to join the indefinite agitation as resolved unanimously by all the affected tribes in the event of state (Cont’d on p-8) government’s failure to take action.

ing to customs and traditions of Nagas. Regarding documentation of customary practices and usages, he said the association strongly supported the concept as it would uphold the practices and usages of customs and traditions for the younger generations. Informing the government that all tribes of Nagaland had documents of historical practices regarding customs and traditions, NDA said the records were well maintained by all customary courts. However, as codifications of customary usages might require wider consultations and insights because, once these were codified and became law, the very essence of customary nature would vanish and end up in the hands of experts, the association said it left the matter to the good wisdom of policy makers. The association regretted that Nagaland, which was born out of unique customs and traditions, failed to give due acknowledgments to the two institutions that had been instrumental in bringing the State thus far.

LH, SUD, KUD back NFHRCC 30-day ultimatum on govt DIMAPUR, AUG 24 (NPN): Lotha Hoho (LH), Sangtam Union Dimapur and Konyak Union Dimapur have joined other CSOs to express support for the Nagaland Foothills Road Coordination Committee (NFHRCC)’s 30-day ultimatum served on the state government.” In a press release, LH chairman Mhondamo Ovung and general secretary S Abenthung Ngullie questioned why was the state government not bothered about foothill road, which was the lifeline of the border districts including Dimapur, Wokha, Mokokchung, Longleng, Mon and even Zunheboto and Tuensang districts.

iii) district customary courts, the association pointed out that the village courts were the only courts constituted by the State government till today. NDA claimed that the customary courts in Nagaland had been functioning for over 120 years, safeguarding the age-old culture and tradition by adjudicating civil and criminal cases, besides those customary in nature, though not formally recognised/constituted by the Government. It said performances of the customary courts could be best understood by the remarks made by visiting high officials during the British era. While appreciating the State government’s initiative to establish Naga Tribunal to adjudicate cases according to customary practices, NDA however, suggested to the government to consider the views of customary custodians before that. NDA emphasised that by virtue of the nature of the services the customary courts dispensed, they deserved to be given due recognition in matters relat-

KUD: Konyak Union Dimapur (KUD) while extending “full support” to NFHRCC expressed the need for Nagaland have a proper foothill road connecting all parts of Nagaland. KUD therefore, urged all irrespective of tribes to support the NFRCC demand. The union affirmed that it was willing to participate in any course of action to make the demand of foothill road into reality.
