TOKYO, JUL 24 (PTI): Pint-sized weightlifter Mirabai Chanu lifted the spirits of an entire nation with an incredibly composed
silver-winning show as India found itself on the Olympics medals table on the very first day of competitions, a feat so remarkable that it more than made up for some disappointments. Competing in her second Olympics, Chanu claimed the silver medal in the 49kg category with a total of 202kg (87kg+115kg) as the country of over a billion but painfully short of consistent Olympic success erupted in joy. Used to medal-less opening days, Chanu’s silver placed India 12th on the tally, a feat achieved for the first time ever. The 4’11” Chanu, whose smile was visible even behind the mask, made sure that the horror outing at the Rio Games was now a thing
firmly of the past and would only be recalled to showcase her growth as an athlete of world-class stature. “I will now go home and eat food made by my mother,” said the diminutive Manipuri with sparkle in her eyes. Within minutes of Indian weightlifter Mirabai Chanu bagging the country’s first medal at the pandemicdelayed Tokyo Olympics, Prime Minister Narendra Modi led the nation in celebrating the smashing win. “Could not have asked for a happier start to @ Tokyo2020! India is elated by @mirabai_chanu’s stupendous performance. Congratulations to her for winning the Silver medal in weightlifting. Her success motivates every Indian,”
PM Modi tweeted with #Cheer4India #Tokyo2020. I am not revealing more details now and keeping it a surprise for you,” Singh told Chanu on a video call soon after her medalwinning effort in Tokyo.

IMPHAL, JUL 24: Manipur police on Saturday cautioned the public, particularly Facebook users stating that a new type of scam/fraud was reported widely whereby cyber criminals created duplicate fake facebook accounts of individuals using the same profile name and picture. Using these duplicate fake facebook accounts, these cyber criminals sent friend requests to the friends of victims and ask for financial help citing some emergency, Manipur police PRO said in a statement. These cyber criminals collect the relevant public information like profile
name, photos and other details from the victim’s legitimate profile and creat a similar looking account on social media, state police PRO said. The PRO appealed not to send or deposit money based on such requests, asserting that if a person needs money, he or she will request his relatives or friends personally and not on social media. He informed that one such criminal was arrested by Cyber Crime Police Station/CID(CB), on July 19 last after a complaint was received. The PRO further asked the people to contact the persons or family members and verify the request whenever such requests to
send or transfer money are received and report the matter to nearest police stations if such suspicious calls or messages are received. Those unaware of this foul play are trapped into this kind of fraud activity The safety measures are: 1) Individuals must lock their Facebook account 2) Always verify a Friend request. 3) Do not send money over Facebook messenger. Always check the authenticity of the message or call to verify before paying. 4) These cyber criminals mostly use Hindi or English, with wrong spelling and grammar. In Delhi, Blinken to discuss HR, Pegasus issues Victory of farmers protesting farm laws top priority: Sidhu
US SECY OF STATE TO ARRIVE INDIA ON JUL 27
NEW DELHI, JUL 24 (AGENCIES): US Secretary of State Antony Blinken will arrive India on Tuesday with a heavy security-side agenda along with discussions on hu¬man rights, said two senior State Department officials while briefing the media on Blinken’s twin-country visit. Human rights is a regular talking point in meetings of Indian diplomats with their European and American counterparts but this administration will be attempting to draw a distinction between its respoanses and those by the Trump administration. “We will raise it, and we will continue that conversation, because we firmly believe that we have more values in common on those fronts than we don’t,” said Acting Assistant Secretary for South and Central Asian Affairs Dean Thompson when asked why he hadn’t mentioned human rights in his opening statement. Asked if he could

“quell any jitters” because of the Modi government’s close ties with the previous US administration and whether India will remain a top priority under the Biden administration,” Thompson said the relationship with India had endured through administrations of “all colours and stripes in the United States, and will continue to do so”. The Pegasus controversy, but in a broader sense, could also be one of Blinken’s talking points. Thompson reacted sharply to the “whole notion of using this
type of technology against civil society, or regime critics, or journalists, or anybody like that through extrajudicial means” and said as a broader issue, the US has been vocal about trying to find ways for companies to ensure that their technology is not used in “these types of ways”. “And we will certainly continue to press those issues,” he added. But the thrust of Blinken’s talks with PM Narendra Modi, where NSA Ajit Doval may be present, and with his counterpart S Jais-
Sukhbir interacts with farmers
hankar will be on expanding security, defence, cyber, and counterterrorism cooperation. The Biden administration’s move towards tighter geo-security proximity with India began with the visit by Defence Secretary Llloyd Austin. After the Blinken visit, the next major engagement will be the US-India 2+2 Ministerial Dialogue involving Foreign and Defence Ministers of both countries. The US is likely to host Modi at the White House later this year. On Afghanistan, the US position, as stated by the officials, would be of interest to India. New Delhi has frequent high-level conversations with Kabul signalling its stakes in the current government. “We certainly intend to continue our relationship with the Afghan government,” said Thompson, adding that the US wanted “just and durable peace through a negotiated political settlement”.
CHANDIGARH, JUL 24 (PTI): Newly appointed Punjab Congress chief Navjot Singh Sidhu on Saturday said for him the “victory” of the Samyukt Kisan Morcha is a top priority and he will go “barefoot” to meet farmers protesting the Centre’s farm laws whenever they call him. The Samyukt Kisan Morcha is an umbrella body of farmer unions spearheading the agitation against the Centre’s three farm laws. Farmers have been protesting at Delhi borders since late November, demanding the repeal of the laws. “I consider the victory of the Samyukt Kisan Morcha as my top priority. I have been calling the farmers’ agitation as sacred for the past one year,” Sidhu told reporters at Chamkaur Sahib, where he got a rousing reception from party workers, a day after taking charge as the state Congress chief. minister Charanjit Singh Channi. Party supporters showered flower petals on Sidhu as his cavalcade passed through various places. The cricketer-turned-politician also visited various religious places. Later, he told reporters at Morinda that he wants to ask the protesting farmers how the Punjab government can assist them in their cause. “I want to ask them how our government’s power can help them in a big way. Look, rising cost, de-
clining yield and income for the past 25 years are forcing farmers to hold agitation. It is our intention that this social movement should convert into an economic power,” said Sidhu. He recalled that he had put up a black flag at his house in support of agitating farmers. “Whenever they call me, I will go barefoot and take their blessings,” he stated. Sidhu also raised the issues concerning the desecration cases, power tariffs and the drug menace.
CHANDIGARH, JUL 24 (IANS): Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) President Sukhbir Badal on Saturday visited octogenarian Labh Singh at Matka Chowk here to express solidarity with the protester who has been sitting alone in support of the farmers’ protest for the past five months. Asserting that visiting him was like paying homage to the spirit of the agitation against the three contentious farm laws enacted by the central government, Badal said, “We must all learn from him. He is a true inspiration of selfless service. I wish him good health and pray for the success of the andolan (agitation).” The SAD President said he had come to know about the unique protest of Labh Singh when he saw a video in this regard during the ongoing Parliament session. “I felt honour bound to come here and seek his blessings as well as express my solidarity with him.”

Nagaland Post VOL. XXXI NO. 229 DIMAPUR, SUNDAY, JULY 25, 2021
Climatic warning
S
ummer months from May to August are the hottest and also most humid. Timely and normal rains serve to lessen the humid heat as temperature swelters. The summer months are also the most dreadful because of long hours of load shedding which make the heat and humidity unbearable, especially in Dimapur. Elsewhere across the globe, as ice caps melt and wildfires rage, global warming is occurring faster than we could have imagined. In countries affected by climate change, many of the world’s prime travel destinations are at risk of suffering serious consequences: Rising sea levels and more dramatic weather events are endangering major cities, like Venice, with flooding. Increased temperatures are depleting resources that tourism industries depend on, with reduced snowfall in the Alps, and scant harvests in Northern California’s vineyards. Some natural wonders, like the Great Barrier Reef, are facing the prospect of vanishing entirely. The changing weather pattern is the most felt and it should be taken serious note of . Ignorance about changing weather and its direct influence on the climate has resulted in devastations across the world. There is a difference between “weather “ and “climate” as the former relates to conditions in the atmosphere over a short time. In the latter, it relates to how the atmosphere behaves over a longer period of time. Climate change generally means changes in long-term averages of daily levels of temperature and rainfall. In a warming world, people can expect it to get wetter. The distribution of the rainfall throughout the year could change as people experience longer, hotter spells, although when rain falls it may be in intense bursts. That being so, the issue of climate change is also a factor that is related with mindless destruction of forests and precipitation of the “green house gas effect” from various chemicals and fossil fuel emissions. The local destruction of the local environment has also added to the changes in climate. Almost all the green laws are in the process of being subverted or completely rewritten to make way for industry. Statutory bodies like the national board for wildlife and forest advisory committee have undergone severe dental surgery and are left with no teeth. In the environment vs. development debate, what is forgotten is that natural capital -forests, rivers, landprovide ecosystem services, without which humans as a species would not survive. Deforestation in Nagaland has unfortunately left an indelible mark with denuded hills and encroached reserved forests bearing mute testimony. Of course, on paper, old and new schemes and policies continue to be used the mainstay of a department which exists without forests. When a natural forest is felled; what is lost is the ecological system, including rare species of flora and fauna. What replaces it is a monoculture plantation of fast-growing species. Thus the policy of afforestation with fast growing and commercial species etc is unhelpful. Climate change is not only about discomfort or hazards or affect on tourism spots but mainly about impact on agriculture crops. The contributory factors for abnormal weather patterns are varied and many. It is therefore important to make citizens aware of their roles and once this is achieved, perhaps even choice of environmental friendly products would become a necessity. No government in the state should overlook the role of sustainable development while pursuing economic growth.
DailyDevotion His Nature and Our Motives
…unless your righteousness exceeds the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees, you will by no means enter the kingdom of heaven. —Matthew 5:20 The characteristic of a disciple is not that he does good things, but that he is good in his motives, having been made good by the supernatural grace of God. The only thing that exceeds right-doingis right-being. Jesus Christ came to place within anyone who would let Him a new heredity that would have a righteousness exceeding that of the scribes and Pharisees. Jesus is saying, “If you are My disciple, you must be right not only in your actions, but also in your motives, your aspirations, and in the deep recesses of the thoughts of your mind.” Your motives must be so pure that God Almighty can see nothing to rebuke. Who can stand in the eternal light of God and have nothing for Him to rebuke? Only the Son of God, and Jesus Christ claims that through His redemption He can place within anyone His own nature and make that person as pure and as simple as a child. The purity that God demands is impossible unless I can be remade within, and that is exactly what Jesus has undertaken to do through His redemption. No one can make himself pure by obeying laws. Jesus Christ does not give us rules and regulations— He gives us His teachings which are truths that can only be interpreted by His nature which He places within us. The great wonder of Jesus Christ’s salvation is that He changes our heredity. He does not change human nature— He changes its source, and thereby its motives as well.

NAGALAND POST, DIMAPUR SUNDAY, JULY 25, 2021
Post-mortem
Team Awaken Nagaland memorandum to CS
Hon’ble Sir, In pursuance of fundamental rights under the Indian Constitution we the people of Nagaland in Kohima (Old MLA Hostel Junction) held a peaceful Demonstration on the 24th July, 2021 and have the honour to submit this Memorandum dated 24th July, 2021, for your kind perusal and immediate necessary action. 1. Whereas the office of the Health and Family Welfare, New Delhi has declared that the Covid Vaccine is not mandatory but voluntary. https://www.mohfw. gov. in/covid vaccination/ vaccination/index. html. According to notification given by the government of Nagaland, i.e., Notification No.NSDMA-ERC OV I D 1 9 / 3 0 1 / 2 0 2 0 , dated 16th July,2021 and Order No.NSDMA-ERC OV I D 1 9 / 2 0 2 0 ( P a r t II)/5515 dated 17th July, 2021 there are certain stipulation given to the citizens of Nagaland that unless vaccinated there will be(a) restriction of inter district travel (b) non-payment of salary. These orders call for mandatory vaccination which violates direction given by the office of Health and Family Welfare, New Delhi. Now at this juncture many people are apprehensive about the efficacy of the vaccines and are determined not to take it. As vaccination is made mandatory as per this impugned Notification, this visibly infringes the Right to Life, and personal liberty guaranteed under Article 21 of the Constitution. We want to point out that this amounts to denying the employees right to food,
T
right to life and discriminating the non-vaccinated employees which will not only effect the Govt employees but their wives, children, parents and the whole family who aredependent on the salary of the employee for survival. These Order and Notifications are discriminatory in as much as violative of the Fundamental Rights guaranteed under Article 14, 15, 19 and 21 of the Indian Constitution as well as Universal Declaration of Human Rights. We urge that you honour the Fundamental Rights of the citizens.(United Nations General Assembly resolution 217 A , Paris 1948) 2. Whereas there are very good reasons that the people of Nagaland will want to avoid the vaccine as we can see first-hand results of vaccinated people with adverse effects and even death in many cases. We would like to bring to your attention that a total of 18 countries which include European countries such as Denmark, Ireland, Netherlands, Norway, Iceland, and Congo, Bulgaria and Asian Countries such as Thailand have suspended the AstraZeneca Covid vaccine (branded as Covishield) due to fears it may cause blood clots, according to the news in UK at thesun.co.uk news at on 03 April, 2021. It takes a minimum of 4-5 years to get vaccine approved for human use as per the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) guidelines. The efficacy of the Covid vaccines are yet to be ascertained as vaccinated persons are also getting adverse side effects such as fatigues, headaches, tiredness and in some extreme cases
even deaths besides others and vaccinated people getting are still getting infected with Covid even after completing the prescribed dose. That Article 21 encompasses within its fold, right to health, as a fundamental right. It is certainly the right of fellow citizens to choose the right to health by choosing other authentic healings and cures besides Covid vaccination. Today we the citizens of Nagaland are urging you to make vaccination available for people only on voluntary basis and that no one should be pressurized on this ground. 3. Whereas we are seeing religious intolerance and persecution especially of the Christian faith in India and abroad. On the ground of mandatory vaccinations, it has been published in a local daily, June 28, 2021 edition that the DC of Kiphire has ordered all churches to allow only 100 % vaccinated people to church sittings. This is absolute discrimination. It comes against Christians perspectives and beliefs:A. The insert of Covid vaccine in its ingredients include HEK 293 cells, which are cultured cells taken from an aborted human fetus cells. It also includes geneticallymodified chimpanzee cells amongst many other reported questionable ingredients. Leviticus 19:19 makes it clear not to mix kinds. It is unthinkable to have another human DNA to be put into you. this comes against Christian long held beliefs. B. We have been seeing restriction put on worship places and worship places in Nagaland are mostly Christian churches. The Word
of God says that we are to not forsake the assembling of ourselves as Christians. In fact Christians are supposed to be the epitome of imparting healing of sicknesses and diseases which is seen in mans churches though not all. Churches are also places where children and young people conic for solace and seeking counselling. It is such a necessity and essential service of the hour as we are seeing more depressed youth and more suicides due to many lockdowns and suppression of social gathering. Those churches willing to open its doors should not be discouraged nor discriminated as it is also a fundamental right and freedom. When even during lockdowns many markets are crowded, why should the churches be limited to 20 or 50? According to the ruling in the Gauhati High Court of Mizoram, In Case No. : W. P(C)/37/2020 in Re Dinthar Incident Aizawl VERSUS State of Mizoram and 11 Ors dated 02.07.2021 Aizawl it was stated that by the Judges, HONOURABLE MR. JUSTICE MICHAEL ZOTHANKHUMA and HONOURABLE MR. JUSTICE NELSON SAILO, Quote”It has been brought to our notice that even persons who have been vaccinated can still be infected with the covid virus, which would imply that vaccinated persons who are covid positive, can also spread the said virus to others. It is not a case of the State respondents that vaccinated persons cannot be infected with the covid virus or are incapable of spreading the virus. Thus, even a vaccinated infected covid person can be a super-
spreader.” end of quote. 4. Lockdowns have been very inconsiderate of poor people especially people living on the fringe depending on their daily wage. Many poor widows have little stalls selling vegetables or otherwise are completely dependent on their daily earning to sustain their families. Many small businesses have been ruined with the lockdowns. This is causing and will continue to cause social unrest. The present situation of anarchy and looting and killing that we are seeing in South Africa are results of prolonged lockdowns according to eye witnesses and recorded on cameras. Even these little business and widows are being forced to get vaccinated. Is the government willing to pay any and all compensations brought about by the adverse reaction of the Covid Vaccination? Will the government repatriate all losses incurred due to the prolonged lockdowns? 5. Whereas the Health and family welfare, New Delhi (http:/www.mohfw. gov.in) has said that RTPCR Antigen testing is not mandatory for everyone. In fact the CDC says in their website the following statement: “Notably, the detection of influenza viral RNA or nucleic acids by molecular assays does not necessarily indicate detection of viable virus or on-going influenza viral replication.” Many experts around the world has the view that these testing are producing false results or false positives and thus the statistics reported could be all wrong or faked at best to psyche the fear of the virus in the mind of the people. 6. Whereas we seek
to change certain SOPs that make wearing of mask mandatory. Virologists and microbiologists are alarmed that people are made to wear mask for many hours. It is absolutely unhealthy and are likely to produce even more diseases according to studies. The public health specialist Dr. April Baller of W.H.O. has also come out with a statement saving “that mask should only be used by healthcare workers, caretakers or by people who are sick with s m toms of fever and cough” People Demands 1. Withdrawal of mandatory vaccination for government employees, school teachers and inter district travels. 2. Ban AstraZeneca (Covishield) and any other Covid Vaccines until efficacy proven 3. Churches to remain open at all times for healing, counselling, worship. 4. No mandatory testing with RT PCR kit. 5. No more lockdowns as it destroys the livelihood of people who are daily wagers. 6. Eliminate mask wearing according to guidelines of W.H.O. According to Pawar, 23 areas in the Pune district are landslide-prone including five areas in Ambegaon, two in Maval, two in Khed, three in Bhor, besides one area each in Mulshi, Junnar, and Velha. “In these areas also many people have lost their lives,” he added. “A total of 76 people have lost their lives due to heavy rains till Saturday morning (in Maharashtra). NEW DELHI, JULY 24 (IANS): A day after the government informed Parliament that no fixed timeline can be indicated at present for the completion of the vaccination drive, former Congress President Rahul Gandhi on Saturday took a swipe saying people’s lives are on the line and it’s a classic case of a missing spine. In a tweet he said, “People’s lives on the line, government admits no timeline, classic case of missing spine.” He tweeted with the hashtag of #WhereAreVaccines. His remarks came a day after the government said that no fixed timeline can be indicated at present for the completion of the vaccination drive. The government said it is expected that beneficiaries aged 18 years and above will be vaccinated by December 2021. Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare Bharati Pravin Pawar in response to Congress MP Rahul Gandhi and Lok Sabha MP Mala Roy’s unstarred question said, “The Covid-19 vaccination is an ongoing and dynamic process, which is being guided by National Expert Group on Vaccine Administration for Covid-19 (NEGVAK) on the basis of concurrent scientific evidence.”
BENGALURU, JUL 24 (PTI): As he stares at his possible exit, B S Yediyurappa on Saturday said he had to face several challenges from the day he took charge as the Chief Minister, but is satisfied that he has made honest efforts to better the lives of the people. Honest taxpayers deserve to be recognised: Sitharaman
Nirmala Sitharaman (File)
NEW DELHI, JUL 24 (PTI): Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Saturday said honest taxpayers deserve to be recognised for dutifully paying their due share of taxes and appreciated the Income Tax Department for successful implementation of various reforms. In her message to the I-T Department on the 161st anniversary of Income Tax Day, she complimented the department for continuing to work towards simplifying its procedures and processes, and making its functioning hassle-free, fair and trans-
parent. “The minister observed that the honest taxpayers deserve to be recognized for the contribution they are making to the progress of the nation by dutifully paying their due share of taxes... She also lauded taxpayers for discharging their compliance obligations despite the difficulties caused by the pandemic,” an official statement said. Minister of State for Finance Pankaj Chaudhary observed that most of the processes and compliance requirements have been shifted to online platforms
and the need for taxpayers to physically visit tax offices has been eliminated or minimized. He highlighted the fact that the interaction with taxpayers is now characterized by a spirit of trust and respect, relying more on voluntary compliance. Revenue Secretar y Tarun Bajaj also complimented the department for having done well in adapting itself to the emergent changes in the economy and having been able to achieve a healthy growth in tax collections. He also appreciated the initiatives undertaken by the department to reorient its approach towards revenue collection, making its functioning trust-based and taxpayer-centric. Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) Chairman J B Mohapatra lauded the tax officers for their collective efforts and effectively fulfilling their twin role as the revenue earning arm of the nation and provider of taxpayer services.

NAGALAND POST, DIMAPUR SUNDAY, JULY 25, 2021
Indian pharma industry Open air travel for inoculated passengers: IATA to touch $130 bn by 2030 NEW DELHI, JUL 24 (PTI): The Indian pharmaceutical industry is expected to grow almost by three times to about 130 billion US dollars by 2030, Chairman of Dr Reddy’s Laboratories, K Satish Reddy said on Saturday. “If you see, currently it’s (pharmaceutical industry) about 42 billion dollars, half between the domestic sales, half between the exports. We expect that it will grow almost by three times in the coming decade, reaching almost 120 to 130 billion dollars by 2030. Truly, we believe that we are poised for a tremendous growth in the coming decade,” he predicted. Re d d y, C h a i r m a n of Boardof Governors of NIPER- Hyderabad, was virtually addressing the 9th Convocation of the institute. The government’s encouragement (‘Atma Nirbhar Bharat’ policy), a lot of reforms in the policy to incentivize the industry and thrust being given to innovation, among others, augur well for the industry, he said.
The Indian pharmaceutical industry worked continuously during the testing times of COVID-19 pandemic second wave to ensure the availability of life saving medicines. During the period, the companies involved in making critical COVID-19 medicines responded very quickly ramping up production, he added. He lauded the efforts of Union Chemicals and Fertilizers Minister Mansukh Mandaviya and the officials for providing a lot of interventionswhich helped the industry ramp up capacities. Noting that the future of the Indian pharmaceutical industry is dependent on its ability to develop stronger capabilities in innovation and R&D, Reddy said such capabilities which already exist, need to be strengthened further. The Indian pharmaceutical sector can contribute to the country through the development of drugs for India-specific ailments which, unfortunately, do not get much global attention, he rued.
NEW DELHI, JUL 24 (IANS): International air travel should be opened up for at least fully vaccinated air passengers, global airlines’ association IATA told IANS. As per the association, a comprehensive system should be set in place that allows hassle free travel for those inoculated. Moreover, the system should also ensure testing and verification of those passengers who have not been inoculated but without increasing the already set restrictions. “Vaccination and testing have a role to play in the recovery of international travel. It is not an option to wait for vaccines to be widely available before reopening
borders. The global vaccine roll-out is likely to take time,” said Conrad Clifford, IATA’s Deputy Director General and Regional Vice President for Asia Pacific. “That’s why testing is the alternative for those who do not have access to vaccines or are unable to be vaccinated for various reasons.” According to Clifford, it is not sustainable to maintain a zero case load approach, especially with scientists believing that Covid-19 will end up becoming endemic. “We have been and continue to urge governments to make data driven decisions to manage the risks of Covid-19 when reopening their borders to international travel.” Recently, independent
data modelling conducted by Airbus and Boeing respectively have show that strategies without quarantine measures can enable international travel to restart with a very low risk of introduction of Covid-19 to the travel destination. On the global level, vaccination drives have accelerated, thereby, triggering hopes for a faster economic rival of the world economy. However, rising Delta variant cases around the world remains a key concern for governments globally. “We are seeing governments around the world start to open borders to vaccinated travelers. More than 20 countries have wholly or partially lifted restrictions for vaccinated travellers.”

NEW DELHI, JUL 24 (IANS): Robust demand recovery amid gradual supply increase is expected to push base metal prices higher on a year-on-year basis in 2021. However, increasing environmental concerns and emission targets are likely to lift the global cost curves across metals. “Geo-political relations and currency movements are also likely to be the key drivers for metal prices,” India Ratings and Research (Ind-Ra) said in a report. “The current strong global commodity demand is stemming from a continued strong Chinese demand while other economies are also making a comeback from the pandemic-related impacts.” Notably, China which has a lion’s share of global consumption of key commodities is likely to witness a strong demand over 2021 on back of a continued government-led infrastructure spending. “The global commodity demand improvement will be balanced by gradual capacity additions, although intermittent lockdowns in certain producing nations would cause temporary disruptions.” “Also, sustainability and decarbonisation efforts are likely to lead to capacity curtailments.” In addition, it said that logistical and supply chain management remains an issue and also supports cost inflation.

According to the Union health ministry’s CoWIN dashboard, 87.1% of people who have re-ceived at least one dose have received Covishield (37.15 crore), 11.9% have received Covaxin (5.1 crore), and 1% have received Sputnik V (3.7 lakh). Fluctuations in the population of active cases alone may not be cause for concern. For example, the number of active cases increased by 10,000 from July 14 to July 15, by 1,000 from July 20 to July 21 and by 2,000 from July 21 to July 22. But experts have expressed concerns based on the patchy availability of vaccines, vaccine hesi-tancy, widespread data manipulation or suppression by governments, emerging virus variants and some pockets of the country still being susceptible to new infections.

wave reached a peak of 1.01 million active cases in mid-September 2020, after which the number of daily new cases began decline, but not below around 1.36 lakh active cases. Similarly, in early May this year, India’s total number of active cases began to plummet after reaching a staggeringly high peak of 3.7 million cases during the second wave. Public health experts had expressed concern over the fact that the number of active cases didn’t drop below around 4 lakh. This meant the novel coronavirus, which causes COVID-19, was and is still circulating in some populations. The longer the virus persists in a population, the more opportunities it will have to accumulate mutations that could allow it to evade the human immune system. The virus’s waxing and waning spread has paralleled India’s bumpy COVID-19 vaccination drive. Thus far, 6.8% of the country’s

One of the organisers told this Reporter that the rally was to protest against mandatory lockdown and restrictions, mandatory vaccination, wearing of masks and covid testing and discrimination based on vaccination. However, another member’s take was different. He said that the purpose of the peace rally was not to protest against anything, but to gather and pray for the state and for the authority. Some of the placards that rallyists held read “High court directed ramping up of covid testing and not ramp up mandatory vaccination”; “Mandatory vaccination is tyranny”; “No more lockdowns. It has brought poverty and hunger”; “Vaccinating cannot guarantee safety of one’s life” and “WHO says masks are not for healthy people” etc.

However, EAC Chümoukedima, Seyiekhrietuo Solo informed that the applicants were asked to meet DC Dimapur first. He said they did not reply and so permission could not be granted for holding the rally. At the venue, administration officials however allowed the protestors to hold mass prayer, after which officials several times, requested them to disperse. While Solo admitted that peaceful and democratic protest was a fundamental right of every citizen, this also came with reasonable restrictions. “One needs prior permission from the concerned authority to hold any protest,” Solo added.

Against use of spy techno on society, journalists: US
WASHINGTON, JUL 24 (PTI): The US has said it is against the use of spying technology on civil society, regime critics and journalists through “extrajudicial means”, even as it maintained that it has no particular insight into the Pegasus snooping case in India. The alleged use of the Pegasus software to spy on politicians, journalists, human rights defenders and others in many countries, including India, has triggered concerns over issues relating to privacy. Politicians, rights activists and journalists were among those targeted with phone spyware sold to various governments by the Israeli firm NSO Group Technologies, according to an international media consortium. “The whole notion of using this type of technology against civil society, or
regime critics, or journalists, or anybody like that through extrajudicial means is always concerning,” Acting Assistant Secretary for South and Central Asian Affairs Dean Thompson told reporters during a news conference here on Friday. The international media consortium on Sunday reported that over 300 verified mobile phone numbers of over 40 journalists, three opposition leaders and one sitting judge besides scores of businesspersons and activists in India could have
been targeted for hacking through the Pegasus spyware. India on Monday categorically rejected allegations linked to the Pegasus snooping row, saying attempts were being made to “malign” Indian democracy. Information Technology Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw asserted that illegal surveillance was not possible with checks and balances in the country’s laws. “The press reports of 18th July 2021 also appear to be an attempt to malign the Indian democracy and its well-established institutions,” Vaishnaw said in Parliament. India, the minister said, has an “established protocol when it comes to surveillance... any form of illegal surveillance is not possible with the checks and balances in our laws and our robust institutions.”

KABUL, JUL 24 (IANS): Thirty-three Taliban militants were killed and 17 others injured in strikes conducted by the Afghan Air Force (AAF) in two provinces, the Defence Ministry confirmed on Saturday. In Jawzjan province, 19 militants were killed and 15 wounded after warplanes targeted Taliban hideouts in Murghab and Hassan Tabbin villages on the outskirts of provincial capital of Shiberghan, Xinhua news agency quoted the Ministry as saying. Fourteen Taliban militants lost their lives and two others wounded when the air force struck their position on the outskirts of Lashkar Gah, capital of Helmand province, according to the Ministry. Three vehicles, six motorcycles, two bunkers and a big amount of weapons and ammunition were also destroyed, it added.
BEIJING, JUL 24 (IANS): The Chinese mainland has reported 13 new locally transmitted Covid-19 cases, with 12 in Jiangsu and one in Sichuan, the National Health Commission said on Saturday. Also reported were 22 new imported cases, of which five each were reported in Guangdong and Yunnan, four in Fujian, three in Sichuan, two in Shanghai and one each in Tianjin, Henan and Hubei, reports Xinhua news agency. No new suspected cases or death were reported in the day. With the new cases, China’s overall infection tally has reached 92,497, including 681 patients still receiving treatment. A total of 87,180 patients had been discharged from hospitals following recovery on the mainland, and 4,636 had died as a result of the virus.
LO N D O N, J U L 2 4 (AGENCIES): China is imposing sanctions on several US individuals and organisations in response to recent US sanctions on Chinese officials in Hong Kong. Those targeted include former US Commerce Secretary, Wilbur Ross. The counter-sanctions come days before US Deputy Secretary of State Wendy Sherman is due to visit China. The US sanctions on Chinese officials in Hong Kong were because of their role in the security crackdown in the territory. Wa s h i n g t o n a l s o warned its business community of the growing risks of operating in Hong Kong. China introduced the National Security Law in Hong Kong last year in response to massive prodemocracy protests. It criminalises secession, subversion and collusion with foreign forces and carries a maximum sentence of life in prison. China’s foreign ministry said on Friday that
Wilbur Ross. (Reuters)
the recent US sanctions were designed to “groundlessly smear Hong Kong’s business environment” and “gravely violate international law and basic norms governing international relations”. It said it would impose sanctions on seven US individuals and entities including Mr Ross. As commerce secretary under former President Donald Trump, Mr Ross expanded the number of firms that could not trade with American firms without a prior license, including Chinese telecom giants like Huawei and ZTE. Others sanctioned
by China include Sophie Richardson, Human Rights Watch’s China director; Carolyn Bartholomew, chair of US-China Economic and Security Review Commission; and Adam King of the International Republican Institute. White House press secretary Jen Psaki told reporters that the US was “undeterred” by China’s retaliation. “These actions are the latest examples of how Beijing punishes private citizens, companies and civil society organisations as a way to send political signals,” she said. The relationship between Beijing and Washington became even more strained under the Trump administration. They remain sour on issues including the origins of Covid-19, human rights and cybersecurity. This weekend, Ms Sherman will travel to China in an effort to address deteriorating ties. It will be the most senior official visit under President Joe Biden.

Biden reaffirms support for Afghanistan Al-Qaeda operates under Taliban protection: UN report themselves. The White House further said that the planned $3.3 billion of security assistance for Kabul in fiscal year 2022 would prioritise capabilities of the Afghan Air Force, key supplies, and salaries for Afghan troops. In a tweet on Saturday morning, Ghani said: “President Biden reassured me that support for the Afghan National Defense and Security Forces (ANDSF) will continue. We have confidence that they will protect and defend Afghanistan. “We stressed on the importance of the Afghans coming together for peace and security. And reiterated the enduring partnership, continued diplomatic and economic support for the Afghan government, security forces and the importance of preserving the gains of the last 20 years.” The call came amidst a sharp rise in violence as Taliban militants have continued to wage a war against government forces and gain ground since the drawdown began on May 1.
KABUL, JUL 24 (IANS): The United Nations has warned in a new report that the threat from terror groups such as Daesh and Al-Qaeda is expanding in many places in Afghanistan. It said the security situation remains fragile with uncertainty surrounding the peace process and a risk of further deterioration. The report by the UN Security Council, published on Thursday, said that despite territorial, leadership, manpower and financial losses during 2020 in Kunar and Nangarhar provinces, Daesh’s Khorasan branch, or ISIL-K, has moved into other provinces of Afghanistan, including Nuristan, Badghis, Sar-e-Pul, Bagh-
ISIL-K has prioritised the recruitment and training of new supporters; its leaders also hope to attract intransigent Taliban and other militants who reject the Agreement for Bringing Peace to Afghanistan between the US and the Taliban, and to recruit fighters from the Syrian Arab Republic, Iraq and other conflict zones. The report stated that the estimates of the strength of Daesh’s Khorasan branch range widely, with one member state reporting between 500 and 1,500 fighters and another stating that it may rise to as many as 10,000 over the medium term. “One member state stressed that ISIL-K was largely underground and

nder the initiative of Task Force for Music & Arts (TaFMA), the state government has partnered with Indian Record Mfg. (INRECO), also known as Hindusthan Records – the first Indian owned music label, for ‘Voice of TaFMA’, a virtual solo singing competition. This was announced on Saturday. According to reports, the competition would comprise of original songs incorporating of English, Hindi & Nagamese. Advisor to CM, Abu Metha took to Twitter and wished that the venture would promote music and create opportunities for the youth. “The Govt of Nagaland through the initiative of @TafmaNaga is partnering with @HindusthanR - India’s First owned music label inaugurated by Nobel Laureate Rabindranath Tagore in 1932...” Metha tweeted. TaFMA advisor, Theja Meru also took to Twitter and expressed gratitude to the Hindusthan Records.
“ T h a n k yo u @ H i n dusthanR for your support, TaFMA is truly honoured to partner with your brand name and music heritage”, Theja Meru said in a tweet. The Indian Record Mfg. Co. Ltd., started with a wide
range of artistes from Punjabi to Bhojpuri to Marathi, Tamil and Malayalam. Among the artistes recorded were Lata Mangeshkar, Asha Bhonsle, Pt.Mallikarjun Mansur, Pt. Kumar Gandar va, Ustad Amir Khan and Manna Dey.
n a new study, researchers have demonstrated a “strong correlation” between toxic pollution, which directly damages human health, and nontoxic pollution, which contributes to global heating and climate change. In the study, published in the journal PLOS ONE, the researchers identified countries that the international community can effectively support to reduce the negative effects of both types of pollution. The researchers also identified countries that will require support to “address governance challenges in order to have a chance at successfully addressing pollution risk,” says Dr. Richard Marcantonio from the Kroc Institute for International Peace Studies, University of Notre Dame, IN, and his study co-authors. The researchers were also able to produce a top 10 “target list” to identify countries that are in the best position to protect themselves against the risks of toxic pollution and climate change with support
from the international community. These countries are: Singapore Rwanda, China, India, Solomon Islands, Bhutan, Botswana, Georgia, South Korea and Thailand. The list also identifies which countries would not be able to respond to these risks even with international support. The researchers note this can be due to a number of factors, including an inability to enforce environmental standards, the exploitation of this by external businesses, and specific geographical issues. As an example, the researchers highlight the
Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). The DRC is exposed to fine particulate matter from both the Sahara desert and from transport in urban areas. It also contains many national and international mining businesses that contribute to the pollution of its waterways and may be damaging people’s health. Moreover, global heating and increased rain disrupt farming, which increases the risk of malnutrition and the prevalence of diseases. Human pollution has had a profound negative effect on ecologies across the world. This pollution originates
from toxic emissions — such as fine particulate matter, or PM2.5 — and nontoxic emissions, such as greenhouse gasses. Over the past few centuries, humans have released more greenhouse gasses, such as carbon dioxide, into the atmosphere, increasing the Earth’s temperature and contributing to climate change. Researchers have shown that climate change poses a significant threat to human health, and believe that some of the negative ecological and human health effects of climate change are irreversible. Scientists are concerned that tipping points, which may soon be crossed, cause “selfreinforcing feedbacks” in global heating, according to Prof. Will Steffen, a climate change expert and emeritus professor at the Australian National University in Canberra, Australia, and his co-authors. This would limit humanity’s ability to collectively respond to the climate crisis. Toxic pollution, such as fine particulate matter,
is also a major health issue. According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), fine particulate matter has been linked to many serious health problems, primarily respiratory and cardiovascular conditions. The EPA also notes that fine particulate matter can damage rivers, lakes, coastal waters, soil, and forests. Re s e a r c h e r s h ave shown that toxic and nontoxic pollution are not separate issues, as they can reinforce one another. However, some scientists have suggested that more research is needed to understand this relationship and to determine what the appropriate response to mitigate the health effects of toxic and nontoxic pollution should be. Further, as the researchers behind the present study observe, there has been little research exploring the correlation between the location of toxic pollution exposure and the location of climate change vulnerability. TOKYO, JUL 24 (IANS/ PTI): Mirabai Chanu, who gave India a start in the medals tally at the Tokyo Olympics with a silver in the women’s 49kg weightlifting event, has said that her dream of winning a medal at the Olympics has been fulfilled. “There is so much happiness. The dream to take a medal at the Olympics has been fulfilled today.” said Mirabai in a virtual interaction organised by the Sports Authority of India on Saturday. Mirabai acknowledged that the failure to not finish her lift at the 2016 Rio Olympics propelled her to put in more effort. “I had worked really hard for Rio, but failed
badly. It was not my day. It was then that I decided I will fulfil my dream of winning an Olympic medal for the country. What I couldn’t do in Rio, I covered it in Tokyo Olympics. In Tokyo, where I am right now, it’s because of Rio. It took lots of hard work in reaching here.” Mirabai’s silver is India’s second medal in weightlifting at the Olympics after Karnam Malleswari’s bronze in the 69kg category at the 2000 Sydney Olympics. “Khaana, sona aur training ke alawa koi doosra kaam nahi kiya” (Besides eating, sleeping and training, she didn’t do any other work) is how Mirabai’s coach Vi-
jay Sharma summed up her schedule in the past five years. “Post Rio failure, there was a lot of pressure on me. That setback showed us that we needed to work harder and be more determined. I worked with that lesson and Mira gave full support to me. But the journey post it (Rio 2016), training technique was changed and (we) got results after 2017. There were 2.5 years of Olympic qualification and 1.5 years of corona. But the result of the journey has been reaching here (on the podium),” said Sharma. To validate Sharma’s point, Mirabai spoke about making a visit home for just five days in the last five years.
President Ram Nath Kovind and Prime Minister Narendra Modi led the country in congratulating Mirabai Chanu, who on Saturday ended India’s 21-year wait for a weightlifting medal at the Olympics by clinching a silver in the 49kg category at the Tokyo Games here. “Heartiest congratulations to Mirabai Chanu for starting the medal tally for India in the Tokyo Olympics 2020 by winning silver medal in weightlifting,” Kovind tweeted. Wishing Mirabai on her success, PM Modi said her feat will inspire the future generations. “Could not have asked for a happier start to @ Tokyo2020! India is elated by @mirabai_chanu’s stupendous performance. Congratulations to her for winning the Silver medal in weightlifting. Her success motivates every Indian. #Cheer4India #Tokyo2020,” Modi tweeted. Sports Minister Anurag Thakur and his predecessor Kiren Rijiju too congratulated the weightlifter for bagging a medal for India on the first day of the competitions here. India’s lone Olympic gold medallist and former shooter Abhinav Bindra too took to the social networking platform to wish Mirabai. Cricket stars including batting legend Sachin Tendulkar, Virender Sehwag, VVS Laxman and Gautam Gambhir, also were not left behind as they congratulated the Manipuri lifter for her success. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi also Samajwadi Party President Akhilesh Yadav also congratulated the Manipuri.
MUMBAI, JUL 24 (IANS): From failing to lift in any of her three attempts in clean & jerk at the 2016 Rio Olympic Games to winning a silver medal in Tokyo, life has come a long way for Indian weightlifter Saikhom Mirabai Chanu. Mirabai, the 26-yearold from Manipur, finished second behind China’s Hou Zihui (210kg -- 94 snatch & 116 clean & jerk) with a total of 202kg (87 in snatch and 115 in clean and jerk) to win the silver medal. Indonesia’s Aisah Windy Cantika took the bronze medal with an aggregate of 194kg. With this, Mirabai won India’s first medal in Tokyo and became the second weightlifter from the country to clinch an Olympic medal. Karnam Malleswari had won the country’s maiden medal in the sport at the 2000 Sydney Olympics. Mirabai ended a twodecade-long drought in Indian weightlifting -- a time in which the sport was tarnished by several doping scandals, including at the 2004 Athens Olympics when Pratima Kumari and Sanamacha Chanu disgraced the country. Mirabai’s medal will also be a balm for a sport that has always produced champions alongside dope cheaters over the years. An employee of the Indian Railways, Mirabai’s entry into weightlifting
was accidental. At the age of 12, she had gone to the Khuman Lampak Stadium in Manipur’s capital Imphal to gone to enrol herself in archery. The archery centre was closed and Mirabai stepped into the nearby weightlifting arena to enquire about archery. Instead, she got hooked to the sport for life as the weights and weightlifting apparatus attracted her attention. As she had built her strength lugging firewood up and down the hills, weightlifting came easily to Mirabai. For the next few years, she would travel nearly 20 km daily from her home in Mongkok Kakching village to the state capital Imphal for weightlifting training. Mirabai moved to Delhi once she made a mark at the national level and soon made it to the national camp. Her first breakthrough came at the 2014 Glasgow Commonwealth Games when she won the silver medal in the 48 kg weight category. “She is very hardworking and determined and has a strong willpower, which is evident from her comeback after the disappointment she faced in Rio de Janeiro,” says N Kunjarani Devi, a legend in Indian women’s weightlifting, who has won more than 50 international medals including silver at World Championships.
Kunjarani said that Mirabai has come up the hard way, spending years away from home struggling with limited resources. “Mirabai richly deserves all the accolades coming her way because she has proven that hard work always pays,” Kunjarani added. In the last five years, Mirabai has won multiple accolades. She has been conferred upon with the Arjuna Award, was honoured with the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna in 2018, and the Padma Shri. In 2017, she became the first Indian after Karnam Malleswari (1994) to win a gold medal at the World Weightlifting Championships. In 2018, she won a gold medal at the Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast, Australia. In April 2021, she set a world record in clean & jerk at the Asian Weightlifting Championships in Tashkent. But this was also the period when her struggles with injuries began, especially her shoulder and back. In 2019, she went to the United States for a lengthy rehabilitation-cum-training camp under renowned strength and conditioning coach Dr. Aaron Horschig. Just before the Olympics, she had again flown to the United States to spend two weeks at Dr. Horschig’s academy as the injures had surfaced again and were troubling her.

Team USA ends day one with no medals for first time since 1972 TOKYO, JUL 24 (AGENCIES): As day one of the Tokyo Olympics came to close and despite multiple near-misses, Team USA failed to win medal for the first time in the Summer Games since 1972. China’s Yang Qian was the first athlete to take home gold at 2020 Tokyo, snagging first place in the women’s 10m air rifle final. USA’s Mary Tucker was the favorite for the event, but the 20-year-old finished sixth. Weightlifter Jourdan Delacruz could not convert her three attempts at 108kg in the clean and jerk, ending her day at seventh in the women’s 49kg division. Team USA’s fencers did not make it past the
table of 16, and archers Mackenzie Brown and world No. 1 Brady Ellison were upset in the first round in the mixed team. Cyclist Brandon McNulty looked like he was going to be the first from the U.S. to snag the coveted gold as he pulled away from the pack in the men’s road race with 24 kilometers to go. However, he finished sixth as Ecuador’s Richard Carapaz brought home his country’s second-ever gold medal. There was a stretch from the 1960, ‘64, ‘68 and ‘72 Summer Games when the U.S. did not medal on the first day, but had brought home at least one medal on the first day dat-
ing back to 1932. However, in the Winter Games, Team USA failed to medal day one of the 2018 Games. Even though Team USA has not reached the podium yet, the group is not winless. The United States 3x3 basketball team beat France 17–10 while softball completed yet another sweep to improve to 3–0 after topping Mexico, 2–0. Women’s Water Polo dominated Japan, walking away with a commanding 25-4 victory. According to USA Water Polo’s Twitter account, the team set Olympic records for goals in a game (25), margin of victory (21) and halftime score (14).
ary Leander Paes won the historic men’s singles bronze at the 1996 Atlanta Games, beating Brazil’s Fernando Meligeni. No Indian could win a singles match after Paes’ heroic feat even as Somdev Devvarman and Vishnu Vardhan competed at the 2012 Games in London but did not manage to cross the first round hurdle. Nagal now faces a herculean task as he faces Australian Open runnerup Medvedev, who beat Kazakhstan’s Alexander Bubilk 6-4 7-6(8).
Chirag-Satwik stuns World No 3
TOKYO, JUL 24 (PTI): Indian men’s doubles pair of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty dished out a sensational show to beat the world no. 3 pair of Yang Lee and Chi-Lin Wang of Chinese Taipei in a thrilling group A match to make a superb start to their maiden Olympic campaign here on Saturday. Chirag and Satwik, world no. 10, notched up a stunning 21-16 16-21 27-25 win over third seeds Lee and Wang, who had claimed back-to-back titles at the Yonex Thailand Open, Toyota Thailand Open and BWF World Tour Finals earlier this year. However, 13th seeded B Sai Praneeth suffered a demoralising 17-21 15-21 loss to world number 47 Misha Zilberman of Israel.
Russia rebranded as ROC at Tokyo Olympics TOKYO, JUL 24 (AGENCIES): Russia, or the Russian Federation, is the official name of the largest country in the world and ranked 4th in Rio 2016 after winning 56 medals. But at the 2021 Tokyo Olympics, the country can’t use their name, flag, or anthem. Instead, the country will compete under the name “ROC”, which is an acronym for the Russian Olympic Committee. This is due to the fact that Russia was sanctioned by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) after it was accused of running a state-backed doping program. In 2020, the CAS sanctioned Russia due to several doping violations, banning it from all major sport-
Russian Olympic team
ing events for two years (a reduction from the four years ban established in 2019 by the World Anti-Doping Agency). Russian athletes are allowed to
compete in international competitions but they have to do it under a neutral flag. Due to the verdict, Russia will be called ROC at the 2021 Tokyo Olympics and at the 2022 Winter Games in Beijing. As for the flag, the country will use the ROC symbol consisting of the Olympic flame-colored in white, blue, and red stripes of the national flag above the five Olympic rings. When a Russian athlete reaches the podium after winning a gold medal, the Russian anthem won’t be played. Instead, music by composer Pyotr Tchaikovsky, specifically the Piano Concerto No. 1, will play in medal ceremonies.
