likely to abstain from apex Vax hesitancy poses challenge in Covid fight ENPO tribal body formation exercise

D I M A P U R , AU G 2 5 (NPN): Despite inoculating a total of 8.27 lakh doses of Covid-19 vaccines across the state till last week, senior government officers, who were assigned to all districts of the State to review the management of Covid-19, have told the state government that low turnout for vaccinations was a major concern. The officers tabled their reports at a review meeting with principal commissioner home, Abhijit Sinha, held in the secretariat conference hall on August Wednesday. The officers expressed the view that the main challenge in achieving vaccinations was due to vaccine hesitancy in the minds of the people. The officers also observed that awareness campaign on the COVID vaccines needed to be boosted especially in the rural areas. Further, they suggested that there was a need to sensitize community leaders, NGOs, GBs and Faith-based or-

CCCPO reiterates stand for ‘one govt, one tax’ KO H I M A , AU G 2 5 (NPN): Chümoukedima Circle Chakhroma Public Organisation (CCCPO) has reiterated its stand of “one government, one tax” under its jurisdiction as resolved by the Nagas on October 31, 2013. CCCPO president Neikhriehu Kense and general secretary Khriebulie Peseyie in a release said the organisation, comprising 17 villages under Chümoukedima, observed that many national groups had been demanding various taxes from villages and from business establishments under its jurisdiction and had been causing undue harassment to village leaders. CCCPO thus asked the national groups not to indulge in “demeaning activities”and instead focus on uniting with each other for an amicable political solution.

ganizations at the earliest. They also suggested that misinformation and fake news needed to be addressed rationally and logically. The senior officers also told the government that write ups or videos in local dialects countering the viral fake news should be prepared and disseminated to the people. Further, at the meeting, the officers gave a brief update on the situation of their assigned districts and actions suggested to improve the overall management of Covid-19 throughout the State. Sensing the need to be prepared for any eventuality in the event of a third wave hitting the state, the state

government has decided to continue putting stress on COVID testing, vaccination coverage and strengthening of healthcare infrastructure in the districts. To intensively review the steps being taken to manage the pandemic at the district level, the government had assigned a senior administrative officer along with a senior officer from the health department to each district. Each team of officers visited their assigned districts and interacted with officials of district task force, CSOs and others to review and guide them in refining /improving Covid-19 management.

NEW DELHI, AUG 25 (AGENCIES): Centre has allocated more than two crore additional COVID-19 vaccines to States to vaccinate school teachers and non-teaching staff on a priority basis in the run-up to Teachers Day on September 5. Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya said that these additional doses would be sent from August 27 to 31. He said that more than two crore additional COVID-19 vaccine doses are being made available to states this month and they have been asked to vaccinate all school teachers on priority before Teachers’ Day on September 5. The indigenously developed world’s first DNAbased needle-free COVID-19 vaccine ZyCoV-D received emergency use authorisation from the drug regulator on August 20 making it the first vaccine to be administered in the age group of 12-18 years in the country. KOHIMA, AUG 25 (NPN): Amidst the recent move to form an apex tribal organisation of Nagas of Nagaland, Eastern Nagaland People’s Organisation (ENPO) is likely to abstain from being a part of the exercise. Considering the emergent need for an apex Naga organisation, other major Naga tribes are all set to sit and work out the matter soon. It was learnt that some units under ENPO have already expressed their decision to remain under ENPO and not to be a part of the proposed apex Naga organisation. However, it has been informed that in all major common issues regarding Naga political issues, ENPO will be working together with rest of the tribal hohos. Representatives from the current 14 tribes hoho stated that as of now they were together, though the

nomenclature could be changed with the proposed new arrangement. They indicated that the new arrangement could be without the Karbis, Garos and Kukis. They also expressed doubt on ENPO’s participation as some tribal units under it had already expressed during the meeting with 14 tribes hoho to remain with ENPO. In this regard, a meeting of the tribal hohos would be convened after the Ao Senden conference scheduled during the first week of September. It may be recalled that planning & coordination, parliamentary affairs and land revenue minister, Neiba Kronu informed media persons after the consultative meeting held on Aug 18 that the house during deliberations, felt the need to have an apex hoho comprising all tribes of Nagaland, since the Naga Hoho which was once the apex body today

no longer has the mandate of Naga tribes of Nagaland. Kronu further added that an apex tribal hoho of tribes within Nagaland was a necessity just as Naga tribes of Manipur have their United Naga Council. Similarly, Kronu said Naga tribes of Arunachal Pradesh and Assam could also work out on how to go about it in their respective states. ENPO CEC meeting on Aug 31: Meanwhile, ENPO has convened a Central Executive Council (CEC) meeting at its headquarters, Tuensang on August 31. ENPO general secretary Manlang Phom in a release has asked all CEC members of the respective tribes, State Demand Talk Team members, advisors, Eastern Nagaland Legislators’ Union, frontal organisations and sub-units to attend the meet as informed earlier without fail.

HMAD appeals NSCN Rainfall likely to State to focus on agri sector to eradicate poverty by 2030 (I-M) to revoke quit notice continue in NE D I M A P U R , AU G 2 5 (NPN): Hardware Merchants’ Association Dimapur (HMAD) has appeal to the NSCN (I-M) to revoke quit notice served on a hardware store that was allegedly found selling hardware items with tempered price tags. HMAD through its media cell termed as “very unfortunate” that one of its members—M/s. Mahrishi Hardware—involved in the case. It also appreciated the NSCN (I-M) special investigation team for its “tireless effort to uproot corruption and malpractices in Dimapur.” HMAD, however, maintained that detection of such crime should be reported to the district administration and offenders be dealt with appropriate action. Further, the association pointed out that rampant taxations and donations were causing misery to business fraternity of

Dimapur. With so many taxes and donations coupled with pandemic induced lockdown, the association said it had become almost impossible to operate business and make a little profit for sustainability of the trader, adding that such circumstances could have led the concerned trader to resort to such malpractice. Asser ting that the offender(s) should be left unpunished for the crime(s) committed, the HMAD has, however, said that the responsible authorities must also ponder upon as to what could have led the offender to take such a step for survival of the business. In the light of the above, the association has “fervently” appealed to the NSCN (I-M) to “revoke its order of issuing quit notice to the proprietor of M/s. Mahrishi Hardware as such an action does not deem fit for the offence committed.”

KOHIMA, AUG 25 (PTI): Nagaland government has planned to explore various financial sources, including CSR funds, and will focus on skill development and employment generation through farming and allied sectors to eradicate poverty by 2030, an official said Wednesday. According to the vision document, the state government will concentrate on externally aided projects, public-private partnership initiatives and negotiated loans from funding agencies to achieve the poverty elimination goal, he said. During the day, Rio held a meeting with officials of various depart-

ments on the production and export of local commodities for the economic upliftment of the state, the official said. The government recently unveiled “Nagaland SDG Vision 2030 – Leav-

NPF legislature decided on all-party govt: Dr. Shürho D I M A P U R , AU G 2 5 (NPN): Naga People’s Front (NPF) president Dr. Shürhozelie Liezietsu has distanced the party organisation from the current exercise to form an all-party government, adding that the decision was made by NPF legislators while the party organisation only advised its MLAs wherever the need arose. Dr. Shürhozelie stated this while reacting to a report on August 23 about wide speculations that NPF was willing to revive the DAN alliance with BJP in order to replace NDPP as ruling coalition. Dr. Shürhozelie said this while reacting to a news item published on August

23, of wide speculations that NPF was willing to revive DAN alliance with BJP to replace the NDPP in the state. Further, Dr. Shürhozelie clarified that the “coming together” of MLAs did not mean “coming together of political parties” as political parties would continue to remain as they were. According to him(a) NPF legislators will join “ this new experiment for political reason only” which is issue-based and (b) the NPF legislators will not ask or accept anything from the government. Dr. Shürhozelie said in view of NPF not seeking any post in the government, the exercise will “in no way

disturb the smooth sailing of the present government.” He said as NPF being the main regional political party representing the people of Nagaland, “we have been trying to keep good relation with everyone” and thus harbour no “ill-will against any political party”. He reiterated “NPF belongs to the people, we are only having the opportunity to look after them.” Dr. Shürhozelie maintained that NPF never said it wanted to revive alliance with BJP. Understanding the best Naga tradition of what was considered shame, he said his party had never said anything as alleged.

The document proposed purposeful engagement of various stakeholders such as universities, financial institutions, farmer organisations and community-based entities to achieve the target. “It suggested that financial sources, such as corporate social responsibility (CSR) funds, externally aided projects, publicprivate partnership initiatives, negotiated loans from funding agencies should be explored in addition to regular missions and programmes launched by the government,” the official said. NEW DELHI, AUG 25 (PTI): Civil Aviation Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia has urged 22 states and UTs to reduce value-added tax (VAT) on aviation turbine fuel (ATF) across in order to give an impetus to air travel. Citing the examples of Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Sikkim and Telangana, Scindia said these states have brought down VAT on ATF to one per cent and even below. “As a result, they have seen a substantial jump in the number of aircraft movements in their states,” (Cont’d on p-8) he said.

the NFHRCC, which it said had been working fervently for about a decade since the year 2013. WYH: Western Yimkhiung Hoho (WYH) extended its “full support” to the representation submitted to the state government by NFHRCC. WSH seeks drought relief for farmers

(From p-1) Observing that Nagaland had been blessed with vast tracts of fertile land that were enough not only to feed “ourselves but also for exporting outside”, the apex tribe body, however, regretted that lack of seriousness in the farming sector and complete dependence on outside supply and on the migrant labourers to cultivate the fields had brought both economic and social hardshipsto the community. It pointed out that if the youth started engaging and tapping rich resources available from farming sector, many of them would become prosperous and uplift the community. But instead, it had been the other way round. Lack of dignity of labour and seeking short-cut prosperity had

made many to turn to anti-social activities which was very unfortunate, the organisation noted. WSH said after the Covid-19 pandemic, even the most advanced countries had realised that humanity would not survive without farming activity as humans needed food anytime – be it in war, flood, drought, pandemic, earthquake or during the normal times. When all other industrial activities came to a complete halt and collapsed, agricultural activities continued to sustain the world populace, it mentioned. “We cannot remain forever dependent on the food supply from outside to survive but achieve food security. The time has come for us to start engaging ourselves in modern and mechanised mode of farming,” the hoho emphasised.

the INC and given their support to the BJP. It was also alleged in the disqualification petition that they had participated in political works and programmes hosted by the BJP. M’laya Cong asks ruling parties to express ‘no-confidence’ on own selves

Correspondent

SHILLONG, AUG 25: In a bizarre political ‘move’, the opposition Congress in Meghalaya on Wednesday asked ruling parties in the State to move a No-confidence motion against their own selves by voting against the Conrad K Sangma-led Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) government during the autumn session of the state Assembly, which will commence from September 10. Leader of Opposition and former Chief Minister Mukul Manda Sangma maintained that the people of the state this time wanted the ruling members to do it. “People of the state are telling us that this time members who are in the ruling dispensation should table a No-confidence motion against the government – that is the inputs that have been shared with us,” the leader of the Congress Legislature Party (CLP) told report-

ers. “If anybody tables, we will be there (to support),” the former Chief Minister, who has openly urged the constituents of the ruling coalition to join the Congress in forming an alternative dispensation, said. Claiming that the suggestion has come from the people of the state, the veteran Congress legislator said, “So we will wait for that. They (people) are telling us and they are telling them also. I am told now whether they (ruling members) agree or not it is up to them but if they table then we are there”. Continuing with his theory of the possibilities of ruling parties moving noconfidence against the ruling dispensation, Sangma said, “You all asked what is the solution to all those alleged irregularities and instances of corruption which is going on with complete impunity and the lack of response to deal with any instances of allegations when brought before the government, the

constant denial mode on those instances of allegations, prompt denial. I had said that I don’t find any solution until and unless somebody else is asked to probably be serious about taking cognizance of those issues and looking at correcting them”.

SHILLONG, AUG 25: Various organisations from the Garo Hills region of Meghalaya, including the GSU, FAF, FKJGP and ADE, have expressed their resentment over the proposed amendment Bill to the 6th Schedule, while calling the same a strategic clandestine tinkering of the Indian Constitution for vote bank politics. The organisations said the implementation of the same could bring about serious altercations. They spoke about the inclusion of tribes of Garo Hills like

the Koch, Boro, Hajong and Rabha tribes through the amendment of 6th Schedule. “The move can have far reaching negative impacts and could disturb the peaceful co-existence. This is definitely going to create attrition between the Garos and other tribes of the region even going to the extent of forgoing the issue of illegal Bangladeshi immigration,” they added. The organisations accused the BJP of vote bank politics, while adding that the party would sit back and gleefully monitor ethnic clashes in their desperate attempt to

push forward their political agenda. According to these organisations, the move of the Government of India to include the term ‘unrepresented tribes’ in “The Constitution (One Hundred and Twenty-Fifth Amendment) Bill, 2019” is a highly controversial decision. “The struggle of the ANVC must be acknowledged as a cry of the Garos to be recognised and deserving of every right under the Indian Constitution to be prosperous, educated and developed but it must be developed with protection as an indigenous tribe of

Garo Hills,” they felt. As per the new amendment the governor will nominate 6 members, 2 of whom will be women and 4 will be nominated from the ‘unrepresented tribes’. “This was discussed many times in various meetings with the state government and the officials from the Home Ministry where the organisations of Meghalaya under the umbrella of MITCRM objected to it again and again. There is no law to debar Koch, Hajong and Rabhas from participating and contesting in the GHADC. Which means they have equal

Won’t arrest Rane in Nashik case, Maha govt to HC Sena says PM should take his statement seriously

MUMBAI, AUG 25 (PTI): The Maharashtra government told the Bombay High Court on Wednesday that it would not take any “coercive action” against Union minister Narayan Rane in an FIR registered in Nashik over his controversial remarks against Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray. The government’s assurance came a day after the BJP leader was arrested in a case registered against him at Mahad in Raigad district over the same remarks and a local court granted him bail late at night. On Monday, during his ‘Jan Ashirwad Yatra’ in adjoining Raigad district, Rane had said, “It is shameful that the chief minister does not know the year of independence. He leaned back to enquire about the count of years of independence during his (August 15) speech. Had I been there, I would have given (him) a tight slap.” The statement sparked off angry protests by work-

ers of Thackeray-led Shiv Sena across the state and FIRs were filed against Rane at Mahad, Nashik, Thane and Pune. An editorial in the Sena’s mouthpiece `Saamana’, on Wednesday launched a scathing attack on Rane and said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi should take his statement against the chief minister seriously. Rane’s son, MLA Nitesh Rane, on the other hand, demanded President’s rule in the state after some Yuva Sena activists who had taken part in protests against Rane later met the chief minister. The Bombay High Court on Wednesday heard Rane’s plea seeking to quash the FIR registered against him in Nashik and all other cases that might be lodged in future. Rane also sought interim protection from arrest. Nashik police had issued a notice directing him to remain present before the investigation officer at 12 pm on September 2. Senior counsel Amit Desai, appearing for the state, told the division bench of Justices S S Shinde and N J Jamadar that no coercive action (such as arrest) will be taken against Rane in the

FIR registered in Nashik till September 17, when the plea would be further heard. Rane’s lawyer Satish Maneshinde sought protection in all cases that may arise out of the statement in question. Desai, however, said such blanket assurance of protection cannot be made as the petition only mentioned the Nashik FIR. The HC said that Rane’s lawyers can amend the petition later to seek protection in connection with other FIRs. The editorial in the Sena mouthpiece said Rane had made the central government hang its head in shame. Despite being made a Union minister, Rane was behaving like a “roadside gangster”, the Saamana said.

If anybody had spoken in this manner about the prime Minister, he would have been booked under sedition charges and Rane’s crime was similar one, it claimed, adding that prime minister Modi and Union home minister Amit Shah should take his statement seriously. It also said that the previous BJP-led government in Maharashtra “has made a few intellectuals languish in jail on allegations that they conspired to kill Prime Minister Narendra Modi”, apparently referring to the Elgar Parishad case. Earlier, Magistrate S S Patil of Mahad court who granted bail to Rane on Tuesday night noted in the detailed order (which became available on Wednesday) that “considering the reason for arrest and other reasons, I found that the arrest is justified”. But the judge also said that the IPC sections invoked against Rane were not punishable with life or death and “no prejudice would be caused to the prosecution if the accused is released on bail. The cour t war ned Rane that he “shall not commit a similar type of of-

fense” and must cooperate with the probe. Shortly after Rane got bail, his son, MLA Nitesh Rane tweeted a clip from the film “Rajneeti”, where a character played by Manoj Bajpayee says, “Those who spit up in the air should know that it would fall on their face only. There will be a strong reply. Later, he also demanded President’s rule in the state after some Yuva Sena members met Chief Minister Thackeray at his official residence ‘Varsha’ hours after they participated in a protest outside Narayan Rane’s residence in Mumbai. “So it was indeed statesponsored violence just like West Bengal. As the head of the state, the CM should be ensuring safety but he is actually felicitating hooligans... President’s rule is the only way out to ensure safety from these thugs,” the Kankavli MLA tweeted. Elsewhere in Malvan, Rane’s stronghold, unidentified persons threw sodawater bottles at Sena MP Vinayak Raut’s house. Rane will soon resume his Jan Ashirwad Yatra along the same route, one of his aides said.

2022 Punjab polls to be fought under Amarinder’s helm: Rawat CHANDIGARH, AUG 25 (IANS): Just ahead of meeting four Congress dissident Cabinet ministers and three legislators, Punjab affairs in charge and AICC general secretary Harish Rawat, on Wednesday clarified that the 2022 Punjab Assembly election would be fought under the leadership of Amarinder Singh amid signs of revolt by the Navjot Singh Sidhu faction. The ‘rebel’ legislators reached Dehradun in the morning to apprise Rawat about the mood of the public against the Amarinder Singh-led government in the state. They, among 20-odd party legislators, have been demanding replacement of Amarinder Singh as he failed to fulfill the 2017 poll promises. Rawat told the media that Amarinder Singh had welcomed party state President Navjot Singh Sidhu himself, and the decision on elevation was not taken without the CM’s approval. “We have given the party leadership to Sidhu but not the Congress to him,” Rawat was categorically clear in saying about any move to change the

Chief Minister ahead of the assembly polls slated in early 2022. The four ministers -Tript Rajinder Singh Bajwa, Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa, Charanjit Singh Channi and Sukhbinder Singh Sarkaria -- a day earlier said here with the support of at least 20 other Congress legislators their main demand is to ‘replace’ Chief Minister Amarinder Singh. They said they wanted to apprise the high command over the widespread dissidence among the party ranks. They were categorically clear in saying after the closed door meeting that it was high time for the party to opt for a change of guard. Their main grudge, among others, with the

Chief Minister and his aides, was unfulfilled poll promises, particularly the delay in action in the 2015 sacrilege and police firing cases. Channi told the media that the panel, authorised by the other legislators, would seek time from the Congress high command to listen to their grievances, otherwise it will be difficult for the party to get a repeat in Punjab. He said the MLAs have also raised a number of issues, including the existence of sand, drug, cable and transport mafias. Late in the evening on Tuesday, seven of the 20odd MLAs and ex-MLAs, who were purportedly party to the demand for the removal of Chief Minister Amarinder Singh, categorically disassociated themselves from any such move. Denying outright being part of what they termed as a conspiracy hatched by a section engaged in trying to drive a wedge within the party, these seven leaders have thrown their weight behind the Chief Minister and reposed their full faith in his leadership.

NEW DELHI, AUG 25 (AGENCIES): Rebutting Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s criticism of the National Monetisation Pipeline (NMP), Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Wednesday said that the government will not give away ownership of assets under the asset monetisation plan and they will be mandatorily handed back to the government. Addressing the media in Mumbai on Wednesday, Sitharaman hit out at the opposition citing monetisation processes undertaken by the Congress-led UPA government. Citing the example of the New Delhi Railway Station, she took a barb on the Congress and said: “Who called the RFP (request for proposal) on it? Is it owned by ‘Jijaji’ now!” “We are not selling off, there will be a strict handing back,” she said. A day after the government unveiled the NMP worth Rs 6 lakh crore, former Congress President Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday accused PM Modi of bringing the process of selling the “crown jewel” assets built by his party in last 70 years. He also contended that the Congress is not opposing the privatisation process but “the entire NMP is designed

to create a monopoly”. Addressing a press conference at the party headquarters along with former Finance Minister P. Chidamabaram, Gandhi had said: “The PM and the BJP said that the Congress had done nothing in last 70 years. There is a list here of all the assets that the Congress has helped build using the public money.”

NEW DELHI, AUG 25 (PTI): The Union home ministry on Wednesday announced that all Afghan nationals henceforth must travel to India only on e-Visa in view of the prevailing situation in Afghanistan. The decision comes days after the government introduced a new category of visa called “e-Emergency X-Misc visa” for the Afghan nationals after the Taliban captured power in that country. “Owing to the prevailing security situation in Afghanistan and streamlining of the visa process by introduction of the ‘eEmergency X-Misc visa’, it

tions will be examined and processed in New Delhi. The “e-Emergency XMisc visa” will initially be valid for six months, they said. All Afghans, irrespective of their religion, can apply for the travel document. Thousands of Afghans rushed into Kabul’s main airport after the fall of the city to the Taliban, some so desperate to escape the insurgents that they held onto a US military plane as it took off and plunged to their deaths. India has evacuated all its embassy staff and several hundred Indians staying in Afghanistan. New Delhi has also evacuated many Afghans, including two MPs, Hindus and Sikhs who faced threats from the Taliban. The Taliban have already enforced their rule over the capital of five million people after a lightning advance across the country that took just over a week to dethrone the country’s Western-backed government in mid-August.

Vision mania

I

t was to prove to be an ironic opening quote through which the then chief minister in December 2016 launched the Nagaland Vision 2030 document when he penned a biblical verse “where there is no vision, the people perish” (Proverbs 29:18): It is still unknown whether there has been any assessment made about the impact of the Nagaland Vision document 2030 released in 2016. Earlier, a comprehensive document on agriculture was launched in June 2012 titled Vision 2050(food for all) and the latest being on August 18,2021 when the current chief minister launched the Nagaland SDG Vision 2030. Probably governments ruled by politicians and the kind of bureaucracy evident presently in state, have no inclination nor time to assess the impact of these documents because they are visionaries who have a vision to prepare visions. They are preparing another vision document even before the current one has been tried and tested. It may be noted that the state government had also released some earlier policy documents that could also be counted as vision documents, such as communitisation policy in 2002 and various agro and industrial policy documents from the 80s onwards. A comprehensive document on agriculture was also launched in June 2012 titled Vision 2050(food for all). The biblical quote “where there is no vision, people perish” may also mean that people can perish not because of lack of vision only but also too many visions and lack of comprehension about a desired and achievable vision. Different people have visions that seek to address the same objective but through different angels. A vision needs a firm foundation which has several layers to provide the structure for shaping the socio-economic future of society. Any weakness in any layer can have negative impact on the overall progress. These layers of a vision may be broadly identified as – economic, education, employment, entrepreneurship and government’s role. Economic vision is not only about good things that we hope at the moment to believe it would be achieved in the future but another way of setting the foundation for progress. Economic vision also cannot ignore the reality of the ever changing environment and the factors that impact infrastructure and commerce etc. It would be a folly to expect an economic vision without fully being aware of the requirements. Economic vision has to do with the people and not those who dream about it. Political leaders ape the theme of ‘economic vision’ but unfortunately, there is hardly any concrete evidence to suggest that the pursuit of the objective has been realistically addressed. Economic evolution is a process that links it ‘entrepreneurship’; which is largely understood as a component that could propel a society towards progress. The policy to promote entrepreneurship originated with the socio-economic vision of the early fifties. Government bureaucrats need to view entrepreneurship not from their official perspective but from the perspective of how self-promoted entrepreneurs have proved themselves in real life. Before envisioning a future, it would be helpful to open our eyes to the present and ascertain the causes and factors that have led to stagnation of economic progress since mid-80s. Any government that claims to have a vision should place good governance as the national highway to these destinations otherwise these would be fruitless and futile exercises and not even worth the paper they are printed on.

DailyDevotion Sacrifice and Friendship

I have called you friends… —John 15:15 We will never know the joy of self-sacrifice until we surrender in every detail of our lives. Yet self-surrender is the most difficult thing for us to do. We make it conditional by saying, “I’ll surrender if…!” Or we approach it by saying, “I suppose I have to devote my life to God.” We will never find the joy of self-sacrifice in either of these ways. But as soon as we do totally surrender, abandoning ourselves to Jesus, the Holy Spirit gives us a taste of His joy. The ultimate goal of self-sacrifice is to lay down our lives for our Friend (see John 15:13-14). When the Holy Spirit comes into our lives, our greatest desire is to lay down our lives for Jesus. Yet the thought of self-sacrifice never even crosses our minds, because sacrifice is the Holy Spirit’s ultimate expression of love. Our Lord is our example of a life of self-sacrifice, and He perfectly exemplified Psalm 40:8, “I delight to do Your will, O my God….” He endured tremendous personal sacrifice, yet with overflowing joy. Have I ever yielded myself in absolute submission to Jesus Christ? If He is not the One to whom I am looking for direction and guidance, then there is no benefit in my sacrifice. But when my sacrifice is made with my eyes focused on Him, slowly but surely His molding influence becomes evident in my life (see Hebrews 12:1-2). Beware of letting your natural desires hinder your walk in love before God. One of the cruelest ways to kill natural love is through the rejection that results from having built the love on natural desires. But the one true desire of a saint is the Lord Jesus. Love for God is not something sentimental or emotional— for a saint to love as God loves is the most practical thing imaginable. “I have called you friends….” Our friendship with Jesus is based on the new life He created in us, which has no resemblance or attraction to our old life but only to the life of God. It is a life that is completely humble, pure, and devoted to God.

Caste-based census: Caste assertion or promotion or annihilation

I

n the given situation, it is hoped that a multi-party delegation would meet the Prime Minister Narendra Modi seeking a national caste census soon. Towards this end, the chief Minister and opposition leader of Bihar along with others have already met the Prime Minister. Caste-based head count is a mix of politics and “deprivation”. Other political parties would certainly follow suit. BJP at one point opposed the caste count, then supported and now carefully observing. However, a BJP leader from Bihar and a Rajya Sabha MP Sushil Kumar Modi said that “BJP has never been against caste census, that’s why we have been a part of the resolution passed in the legislative assembly and legislative council on this issue”. He tweeted that in what was seen as a move to highlight the ruling party’s “in principle” agreement with the growing clamour for estimating the numerical strength of hundreds of castes.” The reasons for going all out for caste-based census are varying. The opposition leader of Bihar from RJD Tejasvi Prasad Yadav while endorsing the head count said “When animals and trees are counted, why not humans”. Sushil Modi recalled the statement made by the then Gopinath Munde, who headed the rural development said in 2014 in Parliament said that “govern-

ment could not accept findings of the socio-economic Caste Census as reliable because of the infirmities in the data collected.” He added that “At that time, on the instructions of the central government, when the Social Economic Caste survey was conducted by the ministries of rural development and urban development, crores of errors were found in it. The number of castes reached into the millions,” and concluded that the report was not made public because of inaccuracies. Substantiating further, the BJP leader said that at the time of the last census of 1931 under the British Raj, Bihar, Jharkhand and Orissa were one. “The census of only 22 castes was done in the population of about 1 crore of Bihar at that time. Now after 90 ears there has been a big difference in the economic, social, geographical and political conditions.” He added that although there are many technical and practical difficulties in conducting caste census, yet BJP is in support of it in principle. Sanghmitra Maurya while participating in the 127th amendment bill, had made a strong plea for caste census. In line with the rationale provided by political leaders on caste census especially on the looming “politics of OBCs”, PM Modi responded in his cabinet expansion gave a record representation to members of OBC’s in his team and ensured promul-

gation of all India quota in medical courses. Earlier BJP Lok Sabha member from Uttar Pradesh Sanghmitra Maurya and strongly supported the case-base census while speaking on the 127th amendment bill giving powers of the state to make their own OBC quota list. Let us go back and recall what happened in the year 2015. When Siddaramaiah of the Congress party headed had commissioned the caste census in 2015, the first after 1935. Over a three-month period, 13.5 million households were surveyed, more than 1 lakh enumerators handled the work and the report was completed three years ago and is lying with the member secretary of the commission. According to H. Kantha Raju, a Former chairperson of the Karnataka Backward classes Commission, under whose supervision the census was carried out, said: “The ball is in the commission’s court. Let it submit the report first, then we will take a call.” Countering Kantha Raju, CS Dwarakanth, former chairperson, State Commission for Backward Classes said “Accepting or rejecting the report comes later, Since the government has spent Rs. 168 crores of taxpayers’ money, it should make the report’s findings public.” However, political analysts believe that the report is not being released because of political

reasons. Leaked details of the census in 2016 suggested a significant increase in the population of SCs, STs and Muslims. Until then, Lingayats and Vokkaligas, courted by all parties, were thought to be the largest social groups in the state. This is the crux of the head count. Social engineering of the political parties and its fortunes are solely dependent on caste calculus. For example, an IAS officer said that “This is the reason the successive governments are not keen to release the finding of the caste census. Even Siddaramaiah hesitated to release a part of the report ahead of the 2018 assembly polls, fearing that it would backfire. The current BJP dispensation is n exception. If the numbers of the leaked report are true, there could be huge political implications that could affect some parties.” Caste is foundational of the Indian politics and society. There are repercussions, if the report is tabled. Political parties such as Congress and JD (S) could have tabled the report. Now BJP can do it. But none dared to release the report because they do not want gamble since the political parties are uncertain about the swing and in that who would benefit. If caste is only about ‘deprivation’, then it should be explained in greater details. Caste is much more than just ‘deprivation’. It denotes power,

continued the sequence of attacks and bombings, so why was it not forced to abide by the agreement. Why didn’t America show strictness? However, the haste of the Biden administration is causing embarrassment to America all over the world, while the world is apprehensive about the creation of a new ground of terror. In fact, neither the US nor organizations like the United Nations have been able to assure that democratic values, and especially the rights of women, will be protected in Taliban-held Afghanistan. The U.S. failed in Afghanistan for many reasons, but two head the list. First, the chosen mission—turning Afghanistan into a Western-style liberal democracy— wasn’t going to succeed no matter how long we stayed. Second, the policy makers and military commanders who ran this campaign lied to themselves and the public about the progress being made and the prospects for success. Strategically, the Taliban is talking sweetly but it is difficult to trust them given its past. The Taliban has become the most powerful terrorist organization in the world today due to the Taliban’s capture of America’s hasty modern weapons and air force. It is too early to say that any acceptable leadership will be able to develop in the Taliban. Who will take the guarantee that Al Qaeda and ISIS have been eliminated from the soil of Afghanistan. If tomorrow Afghanistan becomes a terrorist’s paradise with the help of Pakistan and other countries, then it will not be an exaggeration. Prabhat Pandey (As published by The Times of India)

vote banks vis-a-vis OBCs. In this way OBCs would immensely benefit seeking job reservations not only in the state and central governments, even in JEE, NEET and all government colleges and central universities. Caste-based political parties and national parties will vie to consolidate their vote base luring the backward communities for their political gains. Is caste-based census in the national interest? Indian society is caste-driven. Castebased census once taken, all that said is forgotten. Every political party would be engaged in consolidating the OBC base. As of now OBCs are well represented in polity, judiciary, bureaucracy and other enforcing agencies. Their presence would further increase at alarming levels, while on the other the Dalits, Tribals and minorities especially Muslims would further be marginalized. If we take the socio-economic, educational and occupational profiles they are at the bottom. As B.R. Ambedkar clearly pointed out that the social inequality ought to be addressed first followed by economic equilibria. What is happening in 21st Century India is caste assertion and promotion. As long as caste is used as an organising principle and determining factor in politics and for power consolidation, annihilation of caste continues to remain as a distant reality. America’s undeniable failure in Afghanistan

or almost 20 years in Afghanistan, the way America showed the promise of establishing a legal system in Afghanistan with the help of its forces, it suddenly shattered it and left the Afghan people in the hands of the same Taliban. The manner in which the forces of America and NATO countries have run away from Afghanistan instead of handing it over to any legal authority, proves that the aim of the international powers was not to develop Afghanistan properly and they are only Talibani Islamic terrorists. The American army had come to take revenge. As soon as this revenge was completed, they left this country. After the election of Democrat President Joe Biden in America, there was hope in the world that the establishment of democratic values in the world would be accelerated. Solidarity with the European Union against China’s arbitrariness and activism on the issue of climate change had boosted this confidence, but the developments in Afghanistan have raised questions about the leadership role of the US. The failure of Afghanistan along with Korea, Vietnam, Iraq has also been recorded in American history. The people of Afghanistan are living between fear and insecurity. Then the country has reached the condition of twenty years old. Those people from all the countries of the world who had come for the development of Afghanistan, are at the mercy of the Taliban today. Questions are being raised that when the Taliban did not comply with the peace deal, what was the hurry for the US to leave Afghanistan? In the meantime, the Taliban

status, privilege, occupation, education and many others. CM of Bihar and other leaders from different political parties took the lead because OBCs are their deciding factor. Once census is done those parties thrive on OBCs would go all out for great reservation. Based on the population of each caste, reservation be worked. Now leaders of political parties say that policies and program be evolved, only if we have a clear picture about caste rubrics. And so, that there should be nationwide census. They say, census offers a realistic factual data disclosing which caste least benefitted despite the governmental policies and programs. So, it enables GOI and the state governments to draft development plans. In addition, those castes not benefitted can be given boosters to benefit if there is head count data available. Arguments and justifications keep surfacing in favour as well as against. Nonetheless, OBCs as a cluster are more antagonistic towards the Dalits, Tribals and minorities. Their proximity is much visible and closer in the villages and also in other arenas. OBCs view reservations given to the Dalits and Tribals sceptically. Data shows that atrocities and honour killings perpetuated against the Dalits to a large extent by the OBCs. Once caste census is agreed upon, the caste-based political parties lure their

FIND OUT IF IT’S A GOOD IDEA TO INVEST IN THE GLOBAL MARKET

T

here was a time in our lives when the choices were limited and opportunities were few. My hometown used to have two or three schools, and their students felt proud to don their uniforms. Am-bassadors or Fiats were the only private cars to own, Lifebuoy or Lux to wash our dart, and ThumpsUp or Limca to quench our thirst. If you had a relative living in a foreign land, you would perhaps get to use Camay soap and Pantene shampoo, whenever they visit India. For you to understand this, you must be in your 40s and above. And by no means do I want you to brood over your age, but rather enjoy the changes you have seen. Now we have German auto giants opening showrooms in my hometown. You can order an Italian pizza over the phone. Wear GAP T-shirts, bought locally. The gap between the metros and the smaller cities has narrowed. And with the advent of the internet and the way we are using it, our lives have changed. I have always been advocating that a portion of your investment should be in equity. Equity means owning a part of a business. When

people ask me which business they should be a part of, the most simple answer is: the business which you yourself are a customer of. If you like a particular brand of coffee or T-shirt, you are not the only one. There are probably thousands of people who also like the things you like. That’s because, as consumers, when we choose a product or service, we tend to choose it for the price we are paying and the value we are getting. And if you carefully see, there are only a few winners across different sectors, and they are the best equities for your investments. Since we are increasingly using global products, the question naturally arises: Can we invest in Glob-al equity? The answer is yes, we can. In fact, almost all major Asset Management Companies have global funds and they are predominately focused in the US market. And looking at the statistics, about 0.4 per cent of our total assets in mutual funds are invested in global markets. Looking at the market dominance by the tech giants of USA, like - Apple, Alphabet, Microsoft, Facebook, etc., you should not lose the opportunity to hedge

some of your assets into the global funds. Another reason for me to mention it now is because of our valuations. With the market at it’s peak, the Indian market looks costly for new money to be invested in it. But these global funds have a leverage of putting their money in different markets and if we are heading towards a bearish market after a bull run, this is the time for you to explore opportunities in global market if not for anything else, but for pure hedging. Now that you know about the opportunities in global funds, the question is how much of your port-folio should you expose to global funds? This is a very tricky question. This will very from investor to investor, depending on one’s risk appetite. Experts agree that ten per cent of your portfolio is a com-fortable exposer in a global fund. And they also agree that one should not go beyond 30 per cent, even if one is well-versed with the finances across the globe. As an emerging market, India still holds a bigger prospect in the short to medium term. Dipankar Jakharia, Guwahati

Poor internet service in Tuensang

Sir,

With due respect, I’m writing this to inform the concern authorities that the internet connection (Jio, Airtel, BSNL) in Tuensang has been disturbed for the past few months which I’m personally so disappointed and I’m sure people would feel the same frustration. When one have to attain an online classes or appear online exams for students or attend online office for a working professionals. When there is a light shower or even if the current goes off the internet connection become even more slower. When one have to spend a reasonable amount of money for a certain data Plan! which the public are not being able to use that recharged data due to poor network. Wouldn’t one feel this as an indirect extortion of money from the public by telecom operators..? Hence, I would want to request the concern authorities to please take this matter earnestly so I as a student and the general public would have easy and stable excess to Internet. I would expect a sincere response from the authorities so that none of this inconvenience should be faced in the near future. Ziliro Anar, N.S.T Sector, Tuensang

NTAGI to soon chalk out roadmap to Centre hikes sugar FRP to Rs 290/quintal introduce Cadila’s vax in inoculation Rules out raising sugar selling price

N E W D E L H I , AU G 25 (PTI): The Centre on Wednesday hiked the minimum price that mills have to pay to sugarcane growers by Rs 5 per quintal to Rs 290 a quintal for 2021-22 marketing year, but ruled out any immediate increase in the selling price of sugar. The decision to increase the Fair and Remunerative Price (FRP) of sugarcane for the 2021-22 marketing year (OctoberSeptember) was taken in the meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) held here. The government had fixed sugarcane FRP at Rs 285 per quintal for the current 2020-21 marketing year. Briefing the media after the Cabinet meeting, Food and Consumer Affairs Minister Piyush Goyal said the FRP has been increased to Rs 290 per quintal for a basic recovery rate of 10 per cent. He said a premium of Rs 2.90/quintal will be provided for each 0.1 per cent increase in recovery over

and above 10 per cent. There will be a reduction in FRP by Rs 2.90/ quintal for every 0.1 per cent decrease in recovery. To protect interest of farmers, Goyal said the government has decided that there would be no deduction where recovery is below 9.5 per cent. “Such farmers will get Rs 275.50 per quintal for sugarcane in ensuing sugar season 2021-22 in place of Rs 270.75 per quintal in current sugar season 2020-21,” the minister said. The cost of production of sugarcane for the sugar season 2021-22 is Rs 155 per

quintal. The FRP of Rs 290 per quintal at a recovery rate of 10 per cent is higher by 87 per cent over production cost, he said, adding that sugar cane farming is more remunerative than other crops. The decision will benefit around 5 crore sugarcane farmers and their dependents, as well as about 5 lakh workers employed in sugar mills and related ancillary activities. When asked if the government will increase the minimum selling price (MSP) of sugar as FRP has been raised, Goyal said: “Not necessarily”.

BENGALURU, AUG 25 (PTI): Indian Air Force (IAF) Air Chief Marshal RKS Bhadauria flew in an initial operational clearance (IOC) standard Light Combat Aircraft Tejas during his visit to the city, the Defence Ministry said on Wednesday. The Chief of Air Staff (CAS) visited IAF units and flight test establishments and facilities of DRDO and HAL at Bengaluru on August 23 and 24, an official release said. “During his visit to Bengaluru, CAS flew in an IOC LCA Tejas,” it said. The IAF also tweeted the pictures and said Bhadauria flew a sortie in a Tejas MK1 aircraft. During his visit to Aircraft and Systems Testing Establishment (ASTE), he was given an overview of ongoing projects and briefed on progress of operational

trials. During his interaction with personnel, he spoke of the unique and challenging role of ASTE, noted its laudable achievements and re emphasised the need for staying ahead of the curve in order to leverage its expertise in delivering the requirements of IAF Operational units. The CAS also visited Software Development Institute (SDI), the unit tasked for undertaking development of avionics software. During the visit, he noted that the sustained focus on critical projects by the Institute had contributed significantly in increasing the operational and functional capability of IAF. He outlined his vision for SDI to move towards software indigenisation for integration of various weapons on IAF aircraft and achieving self-reliance in enhancing combat potential, it added.

KOLKATA, AUG 25 ( P T I ) : We s t B e n g a l Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday slammed the Centre over its National Monetisation Pipeline (NMP) policy, claiming that it is a ploy to sell assets that belong to the country and not to Prime Minister Narendra Modi or the BJP. Terming the NMP as a “shocking and unfortunate decision”, the Trinamool Congress supremo alleged that the money raised by selling those assets will be used during elections against opposition parties. “We condemn this shocking and unfortunate decision. These assets belong to the country. It is the property of neither Modi nor the BJP. They (central government) can’t just sell a country’s assets as per their whims and fancies,” Banerjee told reporters at the state secretariat Nabanna. The entire country will stand together and oppose this “anti-people” decision, she said. “The BJP should be ashamed. No one has given them the right to sell our nation’s assets,” she said. Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Monday announced Rs 6 lakh crore National Monetisation Pipeline (NMP) that will look to unlock value in infrastructure assets across sectors ranging from power to road and railways.

He said the government is giving a lot of support to increase sugar exports and ethanol production. “Considering all of these factors, we do not see any reason at the present moment for increasing the (sugar) selling price,” he said, add added the sugar prices have remained stable in the domestic market. He also said the government has ensured a “delicate balance” between the interest of farmers and consumers as well as of the industry. The Centre fixes sugar MSP, which is the floor price below which mills cannot sell the sweetener in the market. The current MSP is Rs 31 per kg. Goyal noted sugar content recovery has been improving as farmers are using modern technology and new agricultural practices Talking about sugar exports, the minister said the sugar mills have contracted for export of 70 lakh tonnes in the current marketing year 2020-21, of which 55 lakh tonne have already been shipped, and the remaining 15 lakh tonne are in pipeline.

NEW DELHI, AUG 25 (PTI): The National Technical Advisory Group on Immunisation (NTAGI) will soon hold a meeting to devise a roadmap for introducing Zydus Cadila’s Covid vaccine in the inoculation drive and prioritising beneficiaries focusing on those aged 12-18 years with comorbidities. The indigenously developed world’s first DNAbased needle-free COVID-19 vaccine ZyCoV-D received Emergency Use Authorisation from the drug regulator on August 20 making it the first vaccine to be administered in the age group of 12-18 years in the country. NTAGI Chairman Dr N K Arora said it is estimated that there are around 12 crore adolescents in the age group of 12-18 years in India and less than 1 per cent of them may have comorbidities. “The NTAGI’s meeting will be held soon to chalk out a roadmap for introducing the three-dose ZyCoV-D vaccine in the ongoing COVID-19 vacci-

nation drive. The meeting will also focus on prioritisation of beneficiaries as this vaccine is approved for both adolescents and adults,” he said. “The aim is to develop a priority list with the focus being on adolescents aged 12-18 years with comorbidities,” Dr Arora said. T h e N TAG I w i l l provide the protocol and framework for the introduction of this vaccine in the COVID-19 immunisation drive. Covishield, Covaxin and Sputnik V vaccines are being given to only those above 18 years and unlike ZyCoV-D, which is threedose, these are adminis-

tered in two doses. The Department of Biotechnology (DBT) has said that ZyCoV-D is the world’s first DNA-based vaccine against the coronavirus and when injected produces the spike protein of the SARS-CoV-2 virus and elicits an immune response, which plays a vital role in protection from the disease as well as viral clearance. It said that interim results from Phase-III clinical trials in over 28,000 volunteers showed primary efficacy of 66.6 per cent for symptomatic RT-PCR positive cases. This has been the largest vaccine trial so far in India for COVID-19, the DBT said.

Pakistan objects to Kiru hydroelectric plant design India says project fully compliant with Indus treaty NEW DELHI, AUG 25 (PTI): Pakistan has raised objections to the design of India’s Kiru hydroelectric plant, a mega 624 MW project over the Chenab river in Jammu and Kashmir, but New Delhi asserts that the project is fully compliant with the Indus Water Treaty, according to officials. Confirming this development, India’s Indus Commissioner Pradeep Kumar Saxena told PTI that his Pakistani counterpart Syed Muhammad Meher Ali Shah raised the objections last week. Saxena, however, asserted that the design of the project is fully compliant with the provisions of the Indus Waters Treaty (IWT).

It has been certified by the Central Water Commission, an apex organisation of the country in the field of water resources. This run-of-river project is being implemented by the Chenab Valley Power Projects Limited, a joint venture of the National Hydropower Company and Jammu and Kashmir State Power Development Corporation (JKSPDC). “As a responsible upper riparian state, India is committed to full utilisation of its rights and believes in an amicable resolution the issues raised by Pakistan side in letter and spirit of the treaty. “Pakistan’s objections on this project may come up for discussions in the next meeting of the Permanent Indus Commission scheduled this year in Pakistan. In the forthcoming meeting, the Indian side will explain

MiG-21 crashes in Barmer, pilot ejects BARMER (RAJ), AUG 25 (PTI): A MiG-21 fighter jet of the Indian Air Force crashed in a village in Barmer district on Wednesday following a “technical malfunction” during a routine trainee sortie but the pilot ejected safely, officials said. It is the fourth MiG-21 crash this year. The plane crashed in a largely uninhabited area in village Matsar at about 5.30 PM, they said, adding the IAF has ordered a Court of Inquiry. Defence spokesperson Lt. Colonel Amitabh Sharma said that the plane was on a routine training sortie. The pilot sustained minor injuries and was assisted by the local villagers. He was later taken to a hospital. “No loss of life has been reported. The debris of the plane, some of it on

Goyal said the government has been giving financial assistance to mills for increasing exports. “To ensure that farmers get cane payment on time, the government was promoting sugar exports,” he said. On ethanol, Goyal said the use of ethanol for blending in petrol has been increasing over the years. In the past three sugar seasons, about Rs 22,000 crore revenue was generated by sugar mills/ distilleries from the sale of ethanol to Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs). In the current sugar season 2020-21, about Rs 15,000 crore revenue is being generated by sugar mills from sale of ethanol to OMCs at 8.5 per cent. The minister said ethanol blending in petrol will rise to 20 per cent in the next three years from the current level. According to Goyal, the revenue from ethanol will increase to Rs 40,000 crore per year from the current Rs 15,000 crore, ensuring that mills pay to farmers in time.

Two pilots were killed in separate MiG-21 crashes in March and May in Gwalior (MP) and Moga (Punjab), respectively. Another MiG-21 Bison fighter plane had crashed at Suratgarh airbase of Sri Ganganagar district in Rajasthan in January, but the pilot survived. The Soviet-origin Mi21 Bison is an upgraded version of the MiG-21 aircraft that the IAF began inducting in the 1960s. The IAF has lost many MiG-21s and other aircraft in accidents in the last few years. In June 2019, the Ministry of Defence informed Parliament that 27 IAF aircraft have crashed since 2016. At present, the IAF has around six squadrons of Mig-21 Bisons. A squadron comprises around 18 aircraft.

cancellation of bail of Jagan’s close aide and YSRCP parliamentary party leader Vijay Sai Reddy. While the arguments on the petition for cancellation of Jagan’s bail were already completed, the court on Wednesday completed the hearing on the other petition. Earlier, the CBI court on July 31 had reserved its judgment to August 25. Narsapur MP has sought cancellation of bail granted to Jagan in a disproportionate assets case registered by the CBI against him.

its position and hope that Pakistan will appreciate the same and its apprehensions will be addressed through discussions,” Saxena said on Tuesday. The treaty provides Pakistan the right to raise objection on Indian design

within three month of the receipt of the information. India has supplied the information on this project in June to Pakistan. Under the IWT signed between India and Pakistan in 1960, all the waters of the eastern rivers -- Sutlej, Beas,

Words alone won’t help auto industry: RC Bhargava Bank employees’ pension

NEW DELHI, AUG 25 (PTI): Maruti Suzuki India Chairman RC Bhargava on Wednesday said that while a lot of statements were made by government officials supporting the automobile industry, but when it comes to taking actual steps nothing has really happened. Speaking at industry body SIAM’s 61st Annual Convention, the veteran industry leader noted that the automobile sector in the country was at a very crucial juncture with declining fortunes in the last few years and it would not revive either with conventional engine vehicles, CNG, biofuels or EVs, unless the question of affordability of cars for the customer is addressed. “We have been going through a situation where this industry has been declining over a long period of time. And despite various very important people in government, we just heard Mr. Amitabh Kant

(NITI Aayog CEO)... There have been a lot of statements made about the importance of the automobile industry. But in terms of concrete actions, which would reverse the decline in trend, I haven’t seen any action on the ground,” Bhargava said. “I am afraid words don’t get us very much in the terms of extra sales but you need concrete action to make this happen,” Bhargava noted. He pondered whether this kind of outlook for the industry culminates from the old belief that car industry and passenger cars were a luxury product, to be owned only by the rich. “Because if the mindsets have changed, I think people planners, economists, thinkers, writers, journalists, everybody should have been worried long ago about what was happening to the growth of the automobile industry....,” he said. The figures are there for everybody to see but no

measures taken to rectify the situation. “I am sorry to say that there are very few steps taken that could reverse this trend. And that is what worries me,” he noted. Bhargava stated that the car industry in India actually became a model industry and started growing after Maruti came into existence. “The change in policy to set up a public sector company to make cars was not because there was a change of thinking amongst the planners that we need a car industry to grow our economy to grow manufacturing, like what happened in the United States or in the UK, or Germany or France or Italy, or Japan or Korea or even China, that kind of thing did not happen,” he noted. Bhargava noted that the auto industry has developed so much because the people in this country have a great aspiration to own a car, and not because there was any

deliberate policy which led this to happen. “And which again, I think supports my view that the change in the mindset of planners about the importance of the car industry and generally of the automobile industry, remains confined to words and doesn’t get translated into action. “The situation today is that if we take into account what has happened in the last 18 months of COVID, already, the industry actually is on a decline if you look at the last five years, and how to reverse this,” he said. Bhargava said he supports the fact that the Indian customers should get safe and clean vehicles. “To get those clean vehicles, if we follow all the European standards with the costs which are involved in those times, how do we make it affordable with a much lower income level which exists,” he questioned.

payouts hiked to 30%

NEW DELHI, AUG 25 (AGENCIES): The Finance Ministry said on Wednesday that the proposal to enhance family pension and bank employer’s contribution under NPS has been approved by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman. The benefits would accrue to family pensioners. According to Business Today, the ministry said that the cap on pay has been removed and uniform slab of 30 per cent will be enforced. The Department of Financial Services (DFS) said that pensions can go as high as Rs 35,000. The DFS Secretary said that there will also be a rise in the contribution of bank employers in NPS. It will go up from 10 per cent to 14 per cent, said DFS Secretary Debashish Panda. “Pension payouts to bank employees could increase

to Rs 30,000-35,000 from the earlier cap of Rs 9,284. PSBs’ contribution for employee pensions under NPS hiked to 14 per cent from 10 per cent earlier,” said DFS Secretary. FM Sitharaman said that the government will have a bare minimum presence in the ‘strategic sectors’ that also include banks and financial services. She said that public sector banks have done well and have come out of Prompt Corrective Action despite the pandemic. PSBs are showing profits and two of them have done very well, she said. The minister stated that deposits have been piling up in the states of eastern India, but credit too needs to be expanded. “Banks have been asked to create state-wise plans for the North East focusing on logistics, exports from the area,” stated the Finance Minister.

Auto industry’s long-term growth slides drastically: SIAM President NEW DELHI, AUG 25 (IANS): Automobile sector’s long-term growth rate has come down drastically in the past 5 to 10 years even before Covid started in India, said SIAM President and Maruti Suzuki Managing Director & CEO Kenichi Ayukawa on Wednesday. Speaking at the 61st SIAM Annual Convention, Ayukawa highlighted: “And, Covid has further caused negative growth for the industry. It has pushed industry volume back by many years,” Ayukawa said at the Special Plenary Session. Besides, he cited that

the industry is facing many immediate and mediumterm challenges. Ayukawa said the immediate short-term concerns for the industry were pandemic related uncertainties, global shortage of semiconductors and rising commodity prices amongst others. “To overcome these challenges and bring back industry on the track of growth, focused action is required through some key enablers.” F u r t h e r m o r e, h e pointed out enablers such as making industry move further towards ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ vision via in-

creased localisation. Regarding the same, Ayukawa pointed out that SIAM and ACMA have together worked out a ‘Localisation Roadmap’ with a target of about 15-20 per cent further localisation in next 2 to 5 years. Additionally, he said that SIAM has prepared an approach paper for a long term regulatory roadmap that takes care of all aspects and gives clarity on future investments. In addition, Ayukawa informed the convention that the automobile industry is working towards new powertrain technologies.

tance against the Taliban. Speaking exclusively to CNN-News18, Saleh also squarely blamed Pakistan for helping the Taliban fool the international community by participating in Doha talks, while using that time to shore up military powers. Saleh said that the Taliban were never really under international pressure because they always enjoyed Pakistan’s support and resources. Pakistan has had a long history of supporting the Taliban, which includes soliciting funding for the Taliban, bankrolling Taliban operations, provid-

ing diplomatic support as the Taliban’s virtual emissaries abroad, arranging training for Taliban fighters, planning and directing offensives, providing and facilitating shipments of ammunition and fuel, and on several occasions apparently directly providing combat support. Saleh did not mince words in blaming the neighbouring country for Taliban gains, and further alleged that the peace talks anchored by Qatar and facilitated by Pakistan were a farce to provide Taliban the time and space to orchestrate a return. “Doha talks legitimised the Taliban and the Taliban did not remain loyal to their words. They did not honour their commitment and they fooled the entire international community. The purpose of the Doha office was to keep the international community divided, keep them hopeful for a peaceful process that did not exist. Meanwhile, they

were investing in military conquest and the Pakistanis were backing them wholeheartedly.” The Pakistan Army and ISI played key roles in facilitating the US-Taliban agreement, which the latter did not honour. It instead, used the breather to shore up military prowess with Pakistan’s support and eventually took over the country in one fell swoop as US forces retreated. Saleh also spoke at length about the US’ role in the eventual fall of democracy in Afghanistan. He blamed a hasty and unstrategised exit for the Taliban’s win in Afghanistan. The acting Afghan president also acknowledged the lackings within his own government and said that the Afghan leaders miscalculated the threat heavily and failed to take appropriate action in time. “There were people in our government who were not aware of the situation and were taking everything

for granted... But in the end, if a superpower decides to go this way or that way, there is so little or nothing we could do to change their attitude. I do accept that I have been a major player and a person of significance but did we have any say in the US decision? No!” Saleh said that Washington wilfully ignored various warnings and pleas of the local leadership in their threat assessment and said that it was wrong to blame the downfall on military or intelligence failure. “We could not influence their decision. I had been warning them of these kinds of consequences for two years. But they are paying the price now. This was a political decision, not a military or intelligence one.. one political misjudgment by the US has brought this situation to Afghanistan today. It wasn’t the Taliban who won this war, it was the lack of a political will in Washington that led to this.”

BEIJING, AUG 25 (PTI): China has established its first diplomatic contact with the Taliban in Kabul after the militant group took control of Afghanistan and the two sides now have “unimpeded and effective communication”, a Chinese official said on Wednesday. The Taliban seized power in Afghanistan on August 15, two weeks before the US was set to complete its troop withdrawal after a costly two-decade war. “China and the Afghan Taliban have unimpeded and effective communication and consultation,” Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin told a media briefing here when asked about the talks between the deputy head of the Taliban’s political office Abdul Salam Hanafi and Chinese Ambassador to Afghanistan Wang Yu in Kabul. “Kabul is naturally an important platform and channel for us to discuss key issues,” Wang said, without disclosing the details. “China respects the Afghan people’s independent decision on their own

future and destiny, supports the implementation of the Afghan-led and Afghanowned principle, and stands ready to continue to develop good-neighbourly relations of friendship and cooperation with Afghanistan and play a constructive role in the peace and reconstruction of the country,” he said. China along with Pakistan and Russia kept its embassy open in Kabul while India, the US and other countries closed down their diplomatic missions after the Taliban took control of Kabul on August 15. anymore and we are not happy with it either,” he added. The doctors and academics of Afghanistan “should not leave this country, they should work in their own specialist areas” Mujahid said, adding: “They should not go to other countries, to those Western countries.” He also said that “there will be no extension for the ongoing evacuation” process by the US. “We want them (Washington) to evacuate their citizens, they have planes and the Kabul airport control is with them now, the US should withdraw all its troops, people or contractors before the deadline.” As to the widely concerned women’s rights to study and work, Mujahid said the Taliban is working

on a procedure so that women can work in the future. He also urged female Afghan government workers to stay at home before Afghanistan’s security situation improves. Mujahid said the Taliban does not want foreign embassies in Kabul to shut down or stop work, and has assured them of security. The Taliban is meeting with officials from various foreign embassies including the US embassy to maintain diplomatic relations, he said. Asked about the statement from the Taliban, White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki said that should not impact Afghans who were prioritized by the US to leave the country. “No. That is not how you should read it,” Psaki said. “ O u r ex p e c t a t i o n ,

which we have also conveyed to the Taliban, is that they should be able to get to the airport. “ US-led troops have been ramping up the evacuation of foreigners and Afghans out of Afghanistan as the deadline looms. About 50,000 foreigners and Afghans have left the country from the Kabul airport during the past nine days, according to the US government said. Also on Tuesday, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said that G7 leaders agreed that it was their collective “moral duty” to help the Afghan people amid the current situation in the war-torn country following the Taliban takeover. “We all agreed that it is our moral duty to help the Afghan people and to provide as much support as possible as conditions allow,” von der Leyen said at a press conference following a meeting of G7 leaders. “To protect these most vulnerable, it is clearly a matter for global cooperation and it has to be dealt with as such from the start. These people should not fall into smugglers’ hands, they need safe pathways,” she added.

WASHINGTON, AUG 25 (PTI): Former US President Donald Trump has slammed his successor Joe Biden on his Afghan policy and expressed concerns that thousands of terrorists might have been flown out of Afghanistan as part of the evacuation process. “Biden surrendered Afghanistan to terrorists and left thousands of Americans for dead by pulling out the military before our citizens,” Trump said in a statement on Tuesday. “Now we are learning that out of the 26,000 people who have been evacuated, only 4,000 are Americans. You can be sure, the Taliban, who are now in complete control, didn’t allow the best and brightest to board these evacuation flights. “Instead, we can only imagine how many thousands of terrorists have been airlifted out of Afghanistan and into neighbourhoods around the world. What a terrible failure. NO VETTING. How many terrorists will Joe Biden bring to America? We don’t know!” he said. Meanwhile, Republican Congressman Mike

Donald Trump

Waltz, a veteran of the war in Afghanistan, introduced a resolution in the House of Representatives, condemning Biden’s failure to heed the advice of military and intelligence advisors about the speed and nature of the Taliban offensive, failure to present a coherent counter-terrorism or evacuation plan to the American people, and the damage done to the US credibility as a result of the president’s abandonment of America’s Afghan allies. The resolution was co-sponsored by Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy, Minority Whip Steve Scalise and Conference Chairwoman Elise Stefanik. “President Biden has embarrassed the United States on the world stage and created the worst foreign policy blunder in our

South Korea’s childbirth level hits record low SEOUL, AUG 25 (IANS): South Korea’s childbirth level hit a record low in the first half of this year, the lowest since 1981, statistical office data revealed on Wednesday. The number of newborn babies stood at 136,917 in the January-June period, down 3.5 per cent from a year earlier, according to Statistics Korea. The newborns kept skidding amid the growing social trend of delayed marriage and the falling number of women who are of childbearing age, reports Xinhua news agency. The number of marriages diminished 11.9 per

cent over the year to 96,265 in the first half, logging the lowest first-half reading. The low bir th rate boosted concerns about the demographic cliff, which refers to a drop in the heads of households eventually leading to a consumption cliff. During the April-June quarter, the number of newborns shrank 2.7 per cent from a year earlier to 66,398, recording the lowest secondquarter reading. The total fertility rate, which refers to the average number of babies that a woman is forecast to have during the lifetime, slightly fell to a new second-quarter low of 0.82 per cent.

CANBERRA, AUG 25 ( I A N S ) : Au s t r a l i a o n Wednesday reported a new record number of coronavirus cases for the third time in a week. There were 973 new locally acquired cases of Covid-19 reported across Australia on Wednesday, taking the total number of confirmed cases since the start of the pandemic to above 46,700, reports Xinhua news agency. However, the Australian Capital Territory (ACT) recorded only nine new cases, its lowest in four days, after a record 30 on Tuesday. It takes the total number of cases linked to an outbreak in the nation’s capital to 176. Despite the downturn in new cases, Chief Minister Andrew Barr announced that the ACT’s lockdown, which began on August 12, would not end earlier than September 2. “What we’ve seen in our own outbreak, and what’s playing out around Australia and around the world is just how quickly one positive case turns into hundreds then thousands in a community,” he told reporters.

KABUL, AUG 25 (IANS): Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid said that Afghan citizens will not be allowed to leave the country any more by the ongoing US evacuation process, while also warning that Washington should withdraw all troops and contractors before the August 31 deadline and no extension would be possible. Mujahid’s remarks on Tuesday came as US President Joe Biden told G7 leaders that he aims to stick with his August 31 deadline to withdraw troops from Afghanistan as long as the Taliban does not disrupt ongoing evacuation operations or airport access. Addressing a press conference here, Mujahid said that while foreign nationals could continue travelling to the airport, the huge crowds of Afghans that have gathered there in recent days should return home and would not face reprisals from the country’s new rulers. “The road, which goes to the airport, is blocked. Afghans cannot take that road to go to the airport, but foreign nationals are allowed to take that road to the airport,” Mujahid said. “We are not allowing the evacuation of Afghans

Pakistan served Taliban: Amrullah Saleh

NEW DELHI, AUG 25 (AGENCIES): The Afghanistan crisis is such that stakeholders even on opposite political vantage points — barring the Taliban perhaps — agree the situation in the West Asian country is bad. The US and NATO assume an air of fatigue and helplessness while neutral players watch the brutal military regime’s takeover of Afghanistan with bated breath. The local Afghan leadership — which was dethroned by the Taliban — however, is the most vocal about the tragedy and warns that gains made in 20 years will be undone fast. Afghanistan’s acting president and anti-Taliban resistance leader Amrullah Saleh squarely put the blame on the US ‘political misjudgment’ and Pakistan’s abetment of the Taliban, reports The First Post. Breast milk of vaccinated mothers contains antibodies that fight COVID-19 K They are also often too young to respond adequately to certain types of vaccines, they said.

“During this vulnerable period, breast milk allows nursing mothers to provide infants with ‘passive immunity’,” said Josef Neu, study’s co-author and a professor at the University of Florida. “Think of breast milk as a toolbox full of all the different tools that help prepare the infant for life. Vaccination adds another tool to the toolbox, one that has the potential to be especially good at preventing COVID-19 illness,” Neu explained. The study was con-

ducted between December 2020 and March 2021, when the Pfizer and Moderna COVID-19 vaccines first became available to health care workers in the US. The researchers recruited 21 lactating health care workers who had never contracted COVID-19. They sampled the mothers’ breast milk and blood three times: before vaccination, after the first dose and after the second dose. “We saw a robust antibody response in blood and breast milk after the second dose -- about a hundred-fold increase compared with levels before vaccination,” said Lauren Stafford, a doctoral student in Larkin’s lab. “These levels are also higher than those observed after natural infection with the virus,” added Vivian Valcarce, from the University of Florida. Vaccinating mothers

to protect babies is nothing new, Valcarce said. “Typically, expectant mothers are vaccinated against whooping cough and flu because these can be serious illnesses for infants. Babies can also catch COVID-19, so routine vaccination of mothers against the virus could be something we see in the future,” he said. The team is continuing to explore how breast milk containing COVID-19 antibodies gained through vaccination protects babies who consume it. “We would like to know if infants who consume breast milk containing these antibodies develop their own protection against COVID-19,” Larkin said. The researchers said many other simultaneous studies conducted around the world also show antibodies in the breastmilk of vaccinated mothers. “That means our study validates a growing body of evidence,” Neu added. he breast milk of lactating mothers who have received the COVID-19 vaccine contains a significant supply of antibodies that may help protect nursing infants from the illness, according to a study. The research, published in the journal Breastfeeding Medicine, strongly suggests that vaccines can help protect both mother and baby, another compelling reason for pregnant or lactating women to get immunised. “Our findings show that vaccination results in a significant increase in antibodies against SARSCoV-2 in breast milk, suggesting that vaccinated mothers can pass on this immunity to their babies,” said Joseph Larkin, a senior study author, and an associate professor at the University of Florida, US. The researchers noted that when babies are born, their immune systems are underdeveloped, making it hard for them to fight infections on their own.

MALE, AUG 25 (PTI): ATK Mohun Bagan qualified for the knockout stages of the AFC Cup following a 1-1 stalemate with Bangladesh champions Bashundhara Kings in a Group D match here on Tuesday. The Indian club made the inter-zonal semi-final of the second tier continental tournament as South Asian Zone champions. Brazilian midfielder Jonathan Fernandes (28′) put the Bangladeshi side ahead in the first half before team-mate Sushanto Tripura (45+2′) was sent off at the stroke of halftime. Assisted by a Liston Colaco cross, Australian forward David Williams (62′) scored the equaliser to make Bagan group top-

pers with seven points as the Kings finished second with five points. The Kings were re-

duced to 10 men in the stoppage time of the first half when their right-winger Tripura was shown a

red card. This was the first time since 2018 that an Indian team has made the zonal semi-finals. Bagan

will play the winners of Uzbekistan’s Nasaf and Turkmenistan’s Ahal on September 22. ATKMB needed a win or a draw against Bashundhara to go through while the Bangladeshi outfit required a win. Bagan struggled at the start against the pressing game of a determined Kings and the latter gained control of the match when Fernandes struck one from the edge of the box giving the rival goalkeeper Amrinder Singh no chance. Both teams had a few chances in the first quarter. Searching an equaliser in their quest to avoid elimination, Bagan found one after the change of ends when the Kings appeared to be on the defensive with a man down.

After 18-wkt haul in West Indies, Shaheen Afridi moves into top-10 in Test rankings DUBAI, AUG 25 (IANS): A superb Test series against the West Indies has moved Pakistan pace bowler Shaheen Afridi into the top-10 of the ICC Test Bowling rankings for the first time. Climbing 10 spots to make his entry, Afridi is the highest-ranked Pakistan bowler in the new rankings -- eighth with 783 points. In the ICC Test Batting rankings, Afridi’s compatriot and skipper, Babar Azam, has jumped to seventh spot. Afridi, the left-arm quick picked up 18 wickets across the two Tests, seven more than the next-best bowler, Jayden Seales of the West Indies. Taking eight wickets in the first Test, Afridi went on to claim career-best match figures of 10/94 in the sec-

Shaheen Afridi ond match, spearheading Pakistan’s charge to a 109run victory at Sabina Park. Afridi took a wicket roughly every four overs, at an average of just 11.27,

dismissing seven West Indian players at least twice in the series. West Indian wicketkeeper Joshua da Silva fell to Afridi in three of the four innings. Afridi has enjoyed a stellar start to his Test career, having taken 76 wickets in 19 matches at an average of 25.25. Babar Azam was consistent with the bat across the series, reaching 30 in all four innings and passing 50 twice in tricky Sabina Park conditions. He finished with 193 runs, more than anyone else in the series, at an average of 48.25. Fawad Alam, after a superb knock of 124 not out in the first innings of the second Test, has moved up 34 places to 21st spot -his highest career ranking.

Harry Kane says he will stay at Tottenham L O N D O N, AU G 2 5 (AGENCIES): Harry Kane announced on Wednesday he will remain at Tottenham this season, ending speculation over his future with Manchester City interested in the England captain. According to News 18, Kane had made clear his desire to leave his boyhood club in the quest to end his wait for the first trophy of his career. However, the 28-yearold was warmly welcomed back by the Tottenham support as he made his first appearance of the season as a substitute in a 1-0 win at Wolves last weekend. “It was incredible to see the reception from the Spurs fans on Sunday and to read some of the messages of support I’ve had in the last few weeks,” he posted on Twitter. “I will be staying at Tottenham this summer and will be 100% fo-

Harry Kane cused on helping the team achieve success.” Kane is Tottenham’s second top goalscorer in history with 221, just 45 off the record held by Jimmy Graves. Yet, his prolific record has not been able to end the north London club’s 13-year wait for silverware. He still has three years left to run on a six-year contract signed in 2018 that left Spurs chairman Daniel Levy with the leverage to demand a fee well in excess

of the £100 million ($137 million) Premier League record City paid Aston Villa for Jack Grealish earlier this month. Levy will be hoping keeping hold of Kane can help fire Tottenham back into the Champions League next season after missing out for the past two years. Spurs have made a bright start under new manager Nuno Espirito Santo, beating City 1-0 without their star striker on the opening weekend of the season before extending their 100 percent start at Molineux.

DIMAPUR, AUG 25 (NPN): While tension along the NagalandAssam border has temporarily been de-escalated following the recent agreement signed between the two states, efforts are now being made to strengthen ties through sports. SDO (civil) and border mag-

istrate at Ralan, Wokha district, Meyazungba Jamir told EastMojo that a friendly cricket match between the two states and the neutral forces along the border has been scheduled on Friday. As an attempt to spread the message of unity through sports amid the border tension, he said:

“There will be a border magistrate (BM)-level meeting and after the meeting, we have decided to do something different by conducting a friendly cricket match to get to know each other.” Jamir added that border magistrates from the both the states, personnel from the Assam police

and Nagaland police, and neutral forces deployed along the border will participate in the friendly cricket game at Yanpha. Meanwhile, the BM-level meeting will cover border issues along Sector A, B and some parts of Sector C of the Disputed Area Belt (DAB).

Seek Tendulkar’s help to overcome poor run, says Gavaskar to Kohli LEEDS, AUG 25 (IANS): India skipper Virat Kohli should seek guidance from Sachin Tendulkar and draw inspiration from the maestro’s performance against Australia in the Sydney Test in 2004 to return to form, said former India captain Sunil Gavaskar. “He should give a quick call to SRT (Sachin Ramesh Tendulkar) and ask what should I do?,” said Gavaskar on air on Wednesday. “[He should] Do what Sachin Tendulkar did at Sydney. Say to himself that I am not going to play the cover drive,” added Gavaskar. Kohli fell to his nemesis James Anderson for just seven on the first day of the third Test here at Headingley on Wednesday, edging

a delivery well outside the off-stump to wicketkeeper Jos Buttler as he attempted a drive. This is the seventh time in 23 Tests Anderson has scalped Kohli in Test match cricket. The England pacer has joined Australia spinner Nathan Lyon as the bowler to dismiss Kohli the most number of times in the lonVirat Kohli gest format. The India skipper has ing to get even a half-cenaggregated only 69 in four tury. The former India innings of three Tests, fail-

opener and captain, who was the first reach 10,000run mark in Test cricket, said that Kohli chasing deliveries outside the offstump is worrying. “That is a bit of a worry for me, because he is getting dismissed at the fifth, sixth and even seventh stump. In 2014, he was getting out more around the off-stump,” added Gavaskar while pointing to the fact that he is being drawn into playing outside the off-

stump. Tendulkar had famously played a very patient knock during the fourth Test of the 2003-04 series against Australia in Sydney. He curbed his instincts and did not play cover drive during his 613-minute and 436-ball stay and went on to score unbeaten 241. India amassed 705/7 declared and had Australia under the cosh before the home team managed to survive and enforce a draw.

NAGALAND POST, DIMAPUR THURSDAY, AUGUST 26, 2021

Indian contingent, including Storey wins 15th Paralympic gold 12-member Jhajharia, departs for Tokyo Paralympics L O N D O N, AU G 2 5 (AGENCIES): Sarah Storey put in another world record-breaking performance on her way to claiming her 15th Paralympic title, as Great Britain claimed six medals on the first day of Tokyo 2020. Storey smashed her world best by over four seconds in the C5 3,000m individual pursuit qualifying and in the final caught team-mate Crystal LaneWright, who matched her silver medal from Rio 2016. The 43-year-old is just one behind Mike Kenny’s British record of 16 golds. There was also silver for tandem pair Steve Bate and Adam Duggleby in the B 4,000m pursuit. Bate and Duggleby were defending champions but the Dutch pair of Tristan Bangma and Patrick Bos, who set a world record in qualifying, caught the Britons in the final. And there were three swimming medals for Paralympics GB, with silvers for Reece Dunn in the S14 100m butterfly and Tully Kearney in the S5 200m freestyle, as well as bronze for Toni Shaw in the S9 400m freestyle. NEW DELHI, AUG 25 (IANS): “We see hope in you and not just medals,” said Union Sports Minister Anurag Thakur while felicitating India’s World Athletics U20 Championships medal winners, here on Wednesday. India bagged two silver medals, through long jumper Shaili Singh and 10,0000m race walker Amit Khatri, and a bronze medal through the mixed 4x400m relay team of Barath Sridhar, Priya Mohan, Summy and Kapil in Nairobi. Addressing the gathering, Thakur sought suggestions from the young ath-

letes to improve the sports ecosystem in the country. He then said that there would be several initiatives taken by the government to help nurture the culture of sports in India. “You (junior athletes) are an inspiration for other sportspersons in the country,” he said. “You have done a tremendous job in getting us laurels even at this difficult time of pandemic, your journey has been outstanding and I assure you that no compromises will be made in helping you in your sporting journey,” he said. The minister further recalled that Prime Minis-

ter Narendra Modi had said sports is about dedication, determination and hard work and all our athletes are winners in their own right when he told athletes, who did not win any medal, to not feel disheartened. Thakur also said that he is happy to learn that former champions are becoming coaches and this is a good sign for the welfare of sports. Also present were World Championships long jump medallist Anju Bobby George, chief coach (junior) Kamal Ali Khan and other dignitaries from the ministry, Athletics Federation of India and Sports Authority of India.

she set in Rio. “It’s quite overwhelming,” she said. “I don’t know if it will sink in until I get home. I came here with a really solid plan of what I wanted to do and I’ve delivered it, so it kind of blows your mind a bit. “I talked before about breaking your personal best, in my case a world record, a small margin at a time. And I just knocked 4.3 seconds off. “I’ve done so much training, and everyone’s been reminding me how much work I’ve done and how I deserve to be that fast, but you don’t like to presume. So it took me by surprise, but a good surprise. “I think about one race at a time and maybe I’ll think about these things afterwards. But it does feel pretty surreal.” Storey, who was born without a fully functioning left hand, started her career as a swimmer at Barcelona in 1992 and competed at four Games, winning 15 Paralympic medals, including five golds, before switching to cycling in 2005. Since then, the mother of Louisa (8) and Charlie (3) has been almost unbeatable both on the track and the road.

“I knew I had it in me to go sub 3.30,” she added. “It’s been a target of mine since I went 3.32 at the London Games. I knew I just needed the right day and the right preparation. “It’s been an incredibly difficult preparation for these Games because it’s so different to what I’m used to. I just had to call on all my experience for staying calm under the pressure and I’m just glad it’s paid off. “It’s fantastic to see the event getting faster, and I just need to keep getting faster as well. So I just had to keep a cool head.” She next goes on Tuesday in the C5 road time trial - another event where she is defending champion - before the road race on Thursday, 2 September. For Lane-Wright, who also set a personal best in the heats, it is the second silver medal at consecutive Games in the event. “I don’t think I’ve reached my full potential. I think I can keep getting better,” she said. “As much as I’m up against Sarah, it’s me against me. I can only control what I can do. To get such a good PB this morning, I’m so pleased.”

3 Indians in finals of Asian junior boxing in Dubai

3rd Test: England demolish India for 78

NEW DELHI, AUG 25 (PTI): Three Indian boxers advanced to the finals of the Asian junior championships after notching up comprehensive victories in their last-four stage clashes in Dubai. While Rohit Chamoli (48kg) and Bharat Joon (+81kg) made the junior boys finals, Muskan (46kg) entered the girls summit s h owd ow n s, o n Tu e s day night. Joon defeated Kyrgyzstan’s Emir-Khan Razhapov 5-0 and Chamoli got the better of Kazakhstan’s Aidar Kadyrkhan by a similar scoreline. Muskan sailed past Kazakhstan’s Yelyanur Turganova, pulling off an unanimous victory. H o w e v e r, S u p r i ya Rawat (66kg) lost to Sanowar Bozorboeva 1-4 and Aarzoo (54kg) also endured a close loss to Uzbekistan’s Guldana Tileuergen, going down 2-3. Devika Ghorpade (50kg) was defeated 0-5 by Uzbekistan’s Shaina Nematovain in another girls semifinal.

LEEDS, AUG 25 (PTI):James Anderson’s artistic morning spell in an inspired English bowling performance blew away India for an inexplicable 78 as the hosts took complete control by stumps with a dominant batting show on the first day of the third Test here on Wednesday. If England pacers got their bearings right after the fifth day brain fade at the Lord’s, India’s famous batting unit’s technique against swing bowling was laid bare by Anderson and his band which skittled them in little over 40 overs. Then it was turn for local boy Haseeb Hameed (60 batting, 130 balls) and Rory Burns (52 batting, 125 balls) to get back to form ending the day at 120 for no loss with batting getting much easier as the day progressed. They now lead by 42 runs. Skipper Virat Kohli won a rare toss and despite the overcast conditions decided to bat first which in the end turned out to be a not so great decision as Anderson’s injured new ball partner Stuart Broad tweet-

TOKYO, AUG 25 (PTI): Veteran Devendra Jhajharia and reigning world champion Sandeep Chaudhary were among five javelin throwers in a 12-strong Indian contingent that left for Tokyo on Wednesday to compete in the Paralympics. The contingent also included two high jumpers — Nishad Kumar and Ram Pal — and discus thrower Yogesh Kathuniya. One of the top medal prospects, Jhajharia had won the gold medal in Athens and Rio Paralympics. The 40-year-old javelin thrower had rewritten his world record of 63.97m

when he sent the spear to a distance of 65.71m in a qualifying event in June. His main competition comes from compatriots Ajit Singh and Sundar Gurjar. With a little bit of luck, India could grab all three medals in the men’s F-46 category, which is for athletes with arm deficiency, impaired muscle power or impaired passive range of movement in arms while competing in a standing position. After Neeraj Chopra’s historic performance at the Tokyo Olympics, javelin throwers have been in the limelight.

ed about how the Headingley track has behaved over the years. Anderson ((8-5-6-3) then did what he does best -- messed with the minds of the top-order batsmen in a sharp eight-over morning spell getting three wickets and then passing on the baton to the younger lot which didn’t disappoint him. Craig Overton (3/14 in 10.3 overs), Ollie Robinson (2/16 in 10 overs) and Sam Curran (2/27 in 10 overs) then tightened the noose with even Rohit Sharma (19 off 105 balls) finding it dif-

ficult to get a move on even after playing 100 balls. Ajinkya Rahane scored 18 but had it not been for 16 extra runs, the embarrassment would have been more like the Adelaide Test match It was just that Anderson turned his stock ball (outswinger) into a shock ball during that dream spell which left Indians gasping for breath. Having seen an inform KL Rahul (0) leave the outswingers alone, Anderson started with inswingers before unleashing one with a wobbly seam with a hint

“Neeraj’s gold medal has put the spotlight on javelin throwers and being the senior most of the lot, I can say this with assurance that after Tokyo Paralympics, javelin (throw) will be the second most popular game in this country after cricket,” Jhajharia said. Focus will also be on Chaudhary and Sumit Antil in the men’s F64 category in which they are ranked world number one and two respectively. The F-64 classification is for athletes with a leg amputation, who compete with prosthetics in a standing position. Track and field events begin on August 27.

of outward movement as the opener went for a drive and became one of the five catches that Jos Buttler took. Cheteshwar Pujara (1) is plain and simple out of form and clueless about his off-stump as a classic outswinger found his edge. Then Anderson did what has been his day job for past seven years. Dismiss Indian skipper Kohli (7) for fun. Rohit did display impeccable defence but once Rahane was out at the stroke of lunch with Robinson getting one to rear up awkwardly and Rishabh Pant playing away from his body without any feet movement, he didn’t have resources to accelerate. India lost their last six wickets for 22 runs. BRIEF SCORES: India 1st innings: 78 allout in 40.4 overs (Rohit Sharma 19, Ajinkya Rahane 18; James Anderson 3/6, Craig Overton 3/14). England 1st innings: 120 for no loss in 42 overs (Haseeb Hameed 60 not out, Rory Burns 52 not out).

EB, SCL end fight, agree to play ISL after Mamata’s intervention Advisor Neikha calls on union sports minister KO L K ATA , AU G 2 5 (PTI): West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday brokered peace between the warring East Bengal and their investors Shree Cement Limited and announced that the redand-gold outfit would play in the upcoming Indian Super League, ending months of uncertainty. “Khela hobe (the game is on). I’m very happy today,” Banerjee announced at the state secretariat Nabanna. “All is well that ends well. They had some uncertainties till now whether they would be able to play in ISL but now East Bengal’s problem is solved. Shree Cement has accepted my request (to extend the deal) with East Bengal and have accepted all my proposals.” Banerjee later urged the representatives of both East Bengal and Shree Cement to shake hands as she once again played a key role, about a year after she had roped in the Rajasthanbased investors to acquire a 76 per cent stake that had paved the century-old club’s last minute entry to ISL

last season. “Go and shake hands and I will remain in between,” Banerjee told the representatives of Shree Cement and East Bengal. Shree Cement Ltd was represented by their company secretar y SS Khandelwal, chief finance officer S Jaju and senior manager Sandeep Kumar, while East bengal had top executive official Debabrata Sarkar and Sadananda Mukherjee. T h e m e e t i n g wa s called by the chief minister after SCL shot off a letter to Banerjee on Monday, expressing their decision

to end the five-year deal after EB management were adamant in not signing the final agreement. The deadlock lasted for about eight months and there were statewide fan protests. “East Bengal played the ISL last year owing to Shree Cement. This time things were a bit uncertain because of which I too became a bit hostile (on Monday). “Where will the crores of East Bengal fans go, I thought, if they aren’t able to play? East Bengal have a brand value in world football. I had requested them

(SCL) and they agreed,” she said. She added: “I think EB fans are happy today. Even MB (Mohun Bagan) will be happy because they want their opponents to play. I had received many calls, voicing their concern about East Bengal’s fate in ISL. So, everyone would be happy today.” Banerjee further said SCL would invest heavily in West Bengal in the coming days. “They are bringing up a lot of cement industries in West Bengal. We can discuss other things later on, at the moment time is very

short, the priority is football now.” she said. A spokesperson of SCL thanked Banerjee and said: “We also want the games to happen. Due to certain reasons, we couldn’t sign the final term sheet. We were trying since the past year to make things work. However, since you have requested we will be participating in this year’s ISL.” East Bengal official Debabrata Sarkar also profusely thanked Banerjee. “Didi has always been with us. For her, we could install floodlights at the club grounds. Just like last year, this year too Didi has rescued us. I just cannot thank her enough. ‘Khela hobe’ slogan couldn’t have been more apt today.” It remains to be seen if Liverpool legend Robbie Fowler remains at the helm of coaching at SCEB who will once again race against time with the international transfer window closing at the end of the month. The Fowler-coached side had finished a poor ninth out of 11 teams in the last season of the ISL.
