WHO red flags India-made cough syrup

UNITED NATIONS, APR 25 (PTI): World Health Organisation Tuesday issued a product alert over contaminated syrup by an Indian manufacturer, warning that it is unsafe for use, especially in children, and may result in serious injury or death.

The WHO Medical Product Alert refers to a batch of substandard (contaminated) Guaifenesin syrup TG syrup identified in the Marshall Islands and Micronesia (Federated States of) and reported to WHO on April 6, 2023.

The stated manufacturer of the affected product is QP Pharmachem Ltd (Punjab, India). The stated marketer of the product is Trillium Pharma (Haryana, India). To date, neither the stated manufacturer nor the marketer have provided guarantees to WHO on the safety and quality of these products. “The substandard product referenced in this

NCD suggests designated place for local vendors

(NPN): Appreciating the ban on street hawkers and vendors illegally occupying the public footpath and roadside vehicle parking areas in Dimapur city, the Naga Council Dimapur (NCD) has, however, appealed to the responsible authorities to designate suitable place for local vendors.

NCD vice president (Adm) Holuto Aye and general secretary LK Peter Anal maintained that Naga local unemployed youths, women and individual families were the “most affected by financial crunches.” NCD stated that setting up of food courts along the roadside by locals to earn their livelihood was “always hailed as honest, innovative step for anyone trying to live by honest and hardworking means.”

The council also said that those groups mostly Naga populace starting to venture into business activities in Dimapur city to earn their livelihood in recent years was “a result of compulsion by their growing need” to secure necessities of life. “It is also understood that owing to late venturing and financial incapacities, they are unable to find any empty space in the market, so they adopted vendor business on the footpaths or roadsides,” NCD stated.

NCD asserted that almost all the best commercial sites were occupied by nonlocals with their “lucrative business establishments” in Dimapur city years back.

Toxic effects can include abdominal pain, vomiting, diarrhoea, inability to pass urine, headache, altered mental state and acute kidney injury which may lead to death,” the alert said. There was no immediate comment from the manufacturer on the WHO alert. Guaifenesin is an expectorant used to relieve chest congestion and the symptoms of cough.

control laboratories of the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) of Australia. The analysis found that the product contained unacceptable amounts of diethylene glycol and ethylene glycol as contaminants.

The product referenced in this alert may have marketing authorisations in other countries in the Western Pacific region. It may have also been distributed, through informal markets, to other countries or regions, the alert by the global health agency said.

The alert said that Diethylene glycol and ethylene glycol are toxic to humans when consumed and can prove fatal. Who advised that if people have the affected product, they should not use it. WHO requests increased surveillance and diligence within the supply chains of countries and regions likely to be affected by these products. Increased surveillance

of the informal/unregulated market is also advised. National regulatory authorities/ health authorities are advised to immediately notify WHO if these substandard products are discovered in their respective country.

Manufacturers of liquid dosage forms, especially syrups that contain excipients including propylene glycol, sorbitol, and/or glycerin/glycerol, are urged to test for the presence of contaminants such as ethylene glycol and diethylene glycol before use in medicines.

Healthcare professionals should report any suspicious cases of adverse events linked to the use of these contaminated medicines to the National Regulatory Authorities/ National Pharmacovigilance Centre, it said.

Recently, questions have been raised over the quality of drugs manufactured by India-based companies.

ENPO says no to exploration of any mineral resource

(NPN): The Eastern Nagaland People’s Organisation (ENPO) has reiterated its earlier stand not to allow exploration of any mineral resource, including oil, in Eastern Nagaland region.

According to a statement, ENPO, in consultation with federating tribal bodies, has reminded that the public resolution still stood with regard to exploration/extraction of mineral resources, including oil.

ENPO said that the “public resolution still stands firm and resolute.”

Therefore, ENPO said that the resolution would continue to remain in force until such time the organisation framed its own guidelines in consultation with the federating tribal bodies, landowners and other stakeholders.

Call to eliminate drug-resistant malaria found in border area

KOHIMA, APR 25 (NPN): A mutated malaria parasite resistant to many of the drugs, which had been found in Southeast Asia and parts of China, was recently detected in areas as close as 25 km on the Myanmar side bordering Nagaland.

units to ‘monitor and verify’ outsiders

DIMAPUR, APR 25 (NPN): Naga Students’ Federation (NSF) has directed all its federating units and subordinate bodies to implement in toto the resolution adopted at its Emergency Federal Assembly on April 22 to effectively carry out “monitoring and verifying of outsiders in their respective jurisdictions” while also submitting a census report to its office within two months with effect from April 23. In a statement, NSF president Kegwayhun Tep and general secretary Siipuni NG Philo expressed concern over the poor enforcement of Inner Line Permit (ILP)in the North-eastern States and the influx of Illegal Immigrants, which was posing as the biggest demographic threat to the indigenous inhabitants of the region.

cern that lack of stringent implementation of the Bengal Eastern Frontier Regulation (BEFR), 1873 had made the Naga homeland a safe haven for illegal immigrants.

In order to regulate the flow of tourists and control the influx of illegal immigrants, through the effective implementation of ILP, NSF stressed on the “need for a tough and honest government run by tough and honest leaders, tough and honest bureaucracy backed by tough and honest general public.”

It also pointed out that

an overwhelming number of people with questionable identity were inhabiting various parts of Naga homeland, which had come to pose as a major threat to identity, culture and survival of indigenous people, resulting in societal destruction. NSF ca utioned that this undeniable threat threatened to plunge the society into a situation wherein Nagas could become a minority in their own land.

In the light of this looming danger caused by the unabated influx of the illegal immigrants into Naga homeland, NSF appealed the State government to put in place a robust mechanism to protect all genuine citizens. The federation also reiterated its demand for setting up a committee/ commission by the State government to oversee the implementation of online ILP system in the State.

DIMAPUR, APR 25 (NPN): The State government is mulling reviving the 50 TPD (tons per day) Wazeho mini cement plant at Wazeho in Phek district.

This was informed by Nagaland State Mineral Development Corporation Ltd (NSMDC) chairman Kuputo Shohe during his maiden visit to the cement plant on Tuesday, accompanied by the managing director and other officials of the corporation. Naga scholar on repatriation of human remains

DIMAPUR, APR 25 (NPN): A Naga Social Anthropologist Dr. Salome Zhimomi, who has been living in Australia for over three decades, has expressed her views over published materials on the reported move by some Naga research scholars to repatriate human remains of Nagas from the Pitts River Museum in London.

Dr.Salome based her observations in her article titled: “ Repatriation of Naga Ancestral Remains: An Intriguing Discourse” with regard to the overview on “ The Journey from the heart: Naga Repatriation and Healing of The Land”,

published in some media. According to Dr. Salome, the very title of the researchers “Journey from the Heart: Reflections on repatriation of Naga ancestral remains” is undoubtedly a very catchy topic and would generate some interesting academic discourses for rising young Naga scholars, especially through contemporary concepts on colonization, colonialism, coloniality and decolonization. She expressed reservations about the project for repatriation established in Nagaland over an initiative by Pitts River Museum England, which is being turned into an academic

discourse in Nagaland. Dr. Salome said that having lived in Australia for nearly three decades, she noted that the Naga repatriation project seemed to “involve a false equivalence of differing indigenous histories around the world-particularly the journey of the aboriginal people of Australia”.

Dr. Salome said such concepts as contained in the Naga repatriation project are “imported into the Naga discourse to describe history and experience.” She also said this was a “false equivalent for the Naga researchers to import external pedagogy born out of others’ historical pain and trauma and inject

that into the Naga community’s discussion of its own affairs”.

Dr.Salome said such misappropriation of other people’s intellectual knowledge was deeply disrespectful for us and our own unique stories about decades of suffering and trauma that Nagas bore at the hands of the Indian military.”

She concluded that if the process of repatriation of Naga cultural remains is to be done, it should be on a collaborative approach of Naga communities and government agency such as State Museum of Art and Culture department. (Full text on p-6)

CHANDIGARH, APR 25 (PTI): Five-time former Punjab chief minister and Shiromani Akali Dal patriarch Parkash Singh Badal, known for his winsome humility and strong rural roots, died on Tuesday. He was 95.

Badal, who had not been keeping well for sometime, was admitted to Mohali’s Fortis Hospital over a week ago after he complained of uneasiness in breathing.

“Mr Badal passed away at around 8 pm,” hospital Director Abhijeet Singh told PTI over the phone.

On the days of mourning, the national flag will be flown at half mast and there will be no official entertainment, the Ministry of Home Affairs said in a communication to all states.

DIMAPUR: Director General of Police (DGP), Rupin Sharma on Tuesday asked the police officers to raise the professional standards of policing in view of the number of increasing crime rates in the state.

Speaking as special guest at the 51st General Conference of the Nagaland Police Service Association (NPSA) at the Rhododendron Hall, Police Complex, Chumukedima, Sharma said despite increase in population, economic offences, vehicles theft and new cases of crimes, the total number of cases registered annually remained the same.

He therefore suggested the need of the NPS officers to make Nagaland

Police and professionalism as their primary identity. He also said that increase in case registration should not be seen as a breakdown of law and order but, greater public trust on the police.

Sharma also commented Nagaland Police personnel for their stellar image of professionalism while performing duties outside the State, but the same has not been maintained while performing duties within the State.

He further reminded the police officers that they were the “skeleton of the Nagaland Police”, and encouraged them to study and deliberate how Nagaland Police can improve through NPSA platform.

He also spoke on various issues of the police administration and matters relating to the welfare of the subordinates.

Delivering presidential address, NPSA president, Teisovise Metha highlighted the important role played by the NPS officers in the governance of the State. He also spoke on the various issues plaguing the NPS cadre and the serious problem of stagnation in the career progression of the officers leading to low morale and motivations.

DIMAPUR, APR 25 (NPN): Department of Geology & Mining (DGM) on Tuesday held a felicitation programme for advisor, Geology & Mining and Department of Under Developed Areas (DUDA), W Chingang Konyak, at DGM conference hall, Dimapur.

Addressing the gathering, the advisor noted on the effectiveness of the department officials and sought advice on the needs to uplift and upgrade the department.

Speaking on the lack of revenue generation of the department, the newly appointed advisor said that he would try to speak with the government for Centrally Sponsored Schemes (CSS) from Delhi, and with the state government for additional funds.

On the recent agreement between Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and state Chief Minister, Neiphiu Rio, for oil exploration, Konyak said Rio was interested to extract oil for revenue generation.

World Malaria Day: Efforts on to maintain malaria free by 2030

DIMAPUR: Along with the rest of the world, Nagaland also observed World Malaria Day on the “Time

to Deliver Zero Malaria: Invest, Innovate, Implement” on April 25. World Malaria Day is observed every year

on April 25 to raise awareness of the global effort to control, prevent and eventually eradicate malaria.

A bri ef highlight of the programme was delivered by Peter Sangtam (District VBD Consultant).

In Dimapur, the event was held at the CMO conference hall in Dimapur.

A DIPR report stated that DC and chairman of DTF for Malaria Elimination, Sachin Jaiswal in his address said malaria was a global concern however improvement has been seen in the past few years.

He also highlighted how malaria was spread and mentioned that besides

other districts, Dimapur is the only district where in all 12 months, mosquitoes can be seen.

He said that in Dimapur, malaria cases have been declining and stressed the need to change to a cleaner environment and lifestyle.

He also urged the department to be more creative and conduct more awareness programmes.

District Hospital Zunheboto under the aegis of National Vector Borne Disease Control Programme (NVBDCP) observed the day at the DC conference hall.

Delivering keynote address, Dy CMO Zunheboto, Dr. K. Akaho Sema briefly highlighted on malaria its symptoms and causes. He said that the district have not registered any cases in the last three years.

CMO Zunheboto, Dr. Zathung Lotha in his short speech spoke on the achievements the state has progress under the implementation of malaria programme by the central government.

Deputy Commissioner, Rahul Bhanudas Mali, in his speech acknowledged the medical department and the district NVBDCP for their active participation in eradicating malaria in the district. He also acknowledged the health care workers, ASHAs for their role in carrying out the vector borne surveillance activities and its follow up action.

The best performing ASHA (Accredited Social Health Activist) workers in the district were also felicitated at the programme.

The top three best performing ASHA workers in Zunheboto district were- Grace of Maromi village, Zhenaho of Izheto Village and Inali Zhimo of Lizu Old village.

He said the elimination of malaria has to be done in all blocks by 2027, interrupting indigenous transmission of malaria throughout the district and preventing the re-establishment of local transmission of malaria in an area where it has been eliminated, and maintaining district malaria-free status by 2030 and beyond.

The activities undertaken at the programme were early diagnosis and radical treatment.

Illegal immigrants a concern: Mnp Governor

IMPHAL, APR 25: Lack of regulation and proper documentation of illegal immigrants is a cause of concern, stated Manipur Governor Sushri Anusuiya Uikey on her maiden visit to Moreh, Manipur’s town at the Indo-Myanmar border on Tuesday.

The Governor who inspected Integrated Check Post (ICP) in Moreh, also interacted with district level officers, representatives of various civil society organisations (CSOs) and people of the border town at the auditorium of ICP.

The Governor heard issues and grievances faced by the people in the border town arising out of the disturbances in the neighbouring country, Myanmar, halting all business activities in the town for the last many years to sealing all routes between India and Myanmar through Moreh town.

After a patient hearing, the Governor assured all possible help to the people of the town.

She said that keeping in mind the current situation in Myanmar, the state government as well as the Centre are taking steps to ensure

safety and security of people living in the border town.

She said, “The humanitarian crisis created by the situation in Myanmar is well-known and we as a democratic country that believes in human rights have certain obligations.”

However, she added, the lack of regulation and proper documentation of the illegal immigrants is a cause of concern.

She stated that taking the matter of influx of foreign immigrants seriously, the state government has constituted a high-powered

Sohiong is one of the 55 seats out of the total 60 reserved for the Scheduled Tribe in the Meghalaya legislative assembly.

The election to the seat was adjourned just before the February 27 assembly polls following the death of one of the candidates, Horju Donkupar Roy Lyngdoh of the United Democratic Party (UDP), who was also a former home minister.

Tripura to invest Rs 1,000 crore to boost tourism infrastructure

AGARTALA, APR 25 (PTI): The Tripura government will invest Rs 1,000 crore for building tourism infrastructure to make the northeastern state a worldclass travel destination, a minister said here on Tuesday.

The state government has plans to make available five houseboats in the picturesque Dumbur Lake in Dhalai district for tourists, besides setting up ropeways at four places in three districts to attract travellers, Tourism Minister Sushanta Chowdhury said.

“We are expecting to invest Rs 1000 crore for tourism infrastructure building to make the northeastern state a world-class tourism destination in the next few years. The way the Centre is extending help to the state, we hope funds will not be a constraint for a tourism

Youth killed for harassing woman

HYDERABAD, APR 25 (IANS): A youth was bludgeoned to death with boulders by family members of a woman he was harassing, in Telangana’s Mancherial district on Tuesday. Mahesh (24) was killed in broad daylight by three persons at Indaram village in Jaipur mandal of the district. Excise scam: CBI files charge sheet against Sisodia

NEW DELHI, APR 25 (PTI): The CBI on Tuesday filed a supplementary charge sheet against former Delhi deputy chief minister Manish Sisodia and others in the excise policy scam case, officials said.

The CBI had arrested Sisodia on February 26 and it filed the charge sheet on the 58th day which may deny him the chance of getting default bail. The agency has also named Hyderabad-based CA Butchi Babu Gorantla, liquor trader Amandeep Singh Dhall and private person Arjun Pandey in the charge sheet.

The CBI has invoked IPC 120-B (criminal conspiracy), 201 and 420 besides provisions of Prevention of Corruption Act.

The CBI had filed the last charge sheet on November 25, 2022. It is alleged that the Delhi government’s excise policy for 2021-22 to grant licences to liquor traders favoured certain dealers who had allegedly paid bribes for it, a charge strongly refuted by the AAP. The policy was later scrapped.

“It was further alleged that irregularities were committed, including modifications in the excise policy, extending undue favours to the licensees, waiver/reduction in licence fee, the extension of L-1 license without approval etc.

“When our party reviewed the present political situation, it seems very unlikely that democracy will survive and constitutional principles will be followed under BJP,” he said.

Urging the electorate to give the Congress a comfortable majority in the 224-member Assembly with 150 seats, Kharge said people should come forward to protect democracy and the Constitution.

“We should speak about problems faced in Karnataka, administration and about the development that has taken place in the state. No work is now possible in the state without commission,” he said.

Addressing a public meeting at Terdal in Belagavi district, the former BJP chief also said the development of the state will be on the “reverse gear” if the Congress forms the government. Seeking the people’s mandate for “political stability” in Karnataka that would vote on May 10, Shah said that only BJP can lead the state towards ‘New Karnataka’.

No action to be taken on scrapping Muslim quota: Karnataka govt to SC

17th Lok Sabha saved Rs 801 cr of its budget allocation: Official

NEW DELHI, APR 25 (PTI): Initiatives such as the use of e-vehicles and a paperless office led by Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla saved Rs 801.46 crore in the four years of the 17th Lok Sabha, a Parliament official said on Tuesday. The savings amounted to almost a quarter of the budgetary provisions made over four years since the 17th Lok Sabha was constituted in May 2019, the official said. The Lok Sabha Secretariat saved Rs 258.47 crore

in the financial year 202122, and Rs 132.60 crores in 2022-23, the official said. The 12th Lok Sabha, which had a 13-month tenure, had managed to save Rs 7.01 crore of the total budgetary allocation. The 13th Lok Sabha (1999-2004) saved 99.52 crore of its allocation over a five-year period. The savings in the 14th Lok Sabha were 145.07 crore. They were Rs 94.17 crore in 15th Lok Sabha and Rs 461 crore in 16th Lok Sabha.

Recalibrating progress

Nagaland needs to wake up to the economic realpolitik on fuelling its dreams which, like a tide, does not wait for ever. Since 1992, the issue of oil exploration and extraction has been commented on many occasions in this column as well as highlighted as news item. A portion of the substantial estimated crude oil and gas deposit are located along the border with Assam. Nagaland has a substantial deposit of crude oil estimated at around 600 million tonnes besides natural gas. In the light of the agreement arrived at between Nagaland chief minister Neiphiu Rio and Assam chief minister Himanta biswa Sarma on April 22, for sharing of revenue from crude oil extracted from the disputed border and also resolving the border issue, the focus has fallen back on Article 371A. The government of Nagaland then under the NNO, did not push for commercial exploitation but only for a limited extraction on experimental/trial basis. In 1972 the government of Nagaland permitted Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) Ltd. The ONGC had extracted at least ten times more than the quantity it ought to have done as trial basis which was around 1.5 million metric tonnes. Nagaland was paid Rs.33 crore as royalty in 1993 and by the following year, all operations of ONGC were suspended by the government under pressure mid-way. According to reports then, despite stoppage of oil operations in Nagaland Wokha district, the Assam-based ONGC used horizontal drilling methods to extract crude from major oil wells within Nagaland side. The special provision or Article 371(A), Clause 7 and sub-clause IV has been discussed and debated intensely during the recent months. It was inserted into the Part XXI of the Indian Constitution in the year 1962. The issue had been discussed at several consultative meetings and consequently, led to the amendment on ‘resources’ to include petroleum and natural gas and minerals’ passed in the form of a resolution in the state assembly on Article 371(A) in July 2010. Parliament was kept in the loop over the house resolution and on March 10,2011 union minister of petroleum, in a written reply to a starred question on Article 371(A); reasserted that “ the state of Nagaland has the power to frame rules for governing matters relating to petroleum and natural gas within the territory of Nagaland”. based on this statement, the Nagaland assembly on September 22,2012 passed the Nagaland Petroleum and Natural Gas Regulations 2012 containing various rules governing invitation for tender from oil companies. However, the Centre pulled the rug from underneath the feet of the state when it insisted that parliament has authority to frame laws for oil operations as per the Entry 53 of List -1 of the Seventh Schedule and also the Mines and Minerals(Regulation and development)Act 1957 which extensively invests mines and minerals as the occupied field of the union of India. Now that the Centre has agreed to revisit oil operations in Nagaland but through a tripartite agreement between the two states and New delhi, tribe organisations today have not voiced out their objections. This is a positive sign but the state government has to hold a joint meeting between representatives of all tribe hohos with all 60 elected members so that the consensus will that people can participate in all-round development.

Be ready in season and out of season.” In other words, we should “be ready” whether we feel like it or not. If we do only what we feel inclined to do, some of us would never do anything. There are some people who are totally unemployable in the spiritual realm. They are spiritually feeble and weak, and they refuse to do anything unless they are supernaturally inspired. The proof that our relationship is right with God is that we do our best whether we feel inspired or not.

One of the worst traps a Christian worker can fall into is to become obsessed with his own exceptional moments of inspiration. When the Spirit of God gives you a time of inspiration and insight, you tend to say, “Now that I’ve experienced this moment, I will always be like this for God.” No, you will not, and God will make sure of that. Those times are entirely the gift of God. You cannot give them to yourself when you choose. If you say you will only be at your best for God, as during those exceptional times, you actually become an intolerable burden on Him. You will never do anything unless God keeps you consciously aware of His inspiration to you at all times. If you make a god out of your best moments, you will find that God will fade out of your life, never to return until you are obedient in the work He has placed closest to you, and until you have learned not to be obsessed with those exceptional moments He has given you.

Repatriation of Naga ancestral remains: A discourse

Iwas very intrigued when I read the overview of the lecture on the Journey from the Heart: Naga Repatriation and Healing of the Land published in a section of the media (Ausgust 2022). It raised some questions for me and took me back in time to my lived experiences, anthropological research in Lazami Village in the mid-90s and connection to my own cultural roots in Nagaland. To be clear, I am grateful that the Pitts River Museum has initiated a process in returning the human remains from their museum to the respective indigenous communities across the globe. I am in full support of our Nagas to having an open discussion about the Naga cultural remains of our ‘forefathers’ as we Nagas traditionally address them, and any other Naga artefacts that are still held by the Museum. This can be a great opportunity for the Naga community to come together and discuss the pros and cons of repatriating the human remains and other items, discussing our local capacity for the logistics and what we are going to do once they are returned to the community. However, from what has been made publicly available so far, it is unclear if the process is community led. Were the various Naga tribal organizations or traditional village bodies informed, or given an opportunity to be involved and consulted? Was there any open consultation on how the decision of repatriation began? Was there a community discussion as to who would be the best representative body or committee to oversee the Naga repatriation process? Can one, as an Academic, initiate the process of repatriation, and be a lead researcher for a Naga community project on repatriation of the Naga cultural remains?

The process through which the project is being established and run in Nagaland raises a few concerns. According to the published materials, mainly through newspapers, it seems that what was started as an initiative by the Pitts River Museum in England, has now been turned into an academic discourse in Nagaland, led by researchers, one of whom is the lead researcher by the name of Dr. Dolly Kikon, an Associate Professor in Melbourne University, Australia. Sum-

moned to the lectures, the Naga communities have become the mere audience of an academic discourse on themes and topics that are foreign to our own lived experiences and our Naga history. The researchers have taken the Naga repatriation process upon themselves to be the ‘experts’ and taken the lead role. Rather than Naga tribal community taking ownership of the process, allowing to have a say, and being involved in the process itself. The Nagas are being told about the repatriation project through lectures, newspaper articles and internet mostly delivered and written by the researchers themselves.

A further very concerning aspect of the process is the nature of the academic discourse used by the researchers, especially the language and terminologies used to disseminate and guide the community towards understanding importance of repatriation of our Naga cultural materials. For example, the lecture on repatriation of Naga ancestral remains” is undoubtedly a very catchy topic and would generate some interesting academic discourses for rising young Naga scholars, especially through contemporary concepts on colonization, colonialism, coloniality and decolonization. These concepts can turn into never ending threads of non-tangible discourses in the intellectual world. We must be realistic, contextual, and most importantly grounded in our own unique and proud history when we discuss our Naga cultural materials.

In this regard, the process as it sets out in the lecture raise some troubling issues. Are Naga people really suffering right now from the long past British Administration in the Naga Hills, or our current woes – which are pressing and grievous – the result of more recent political history? Are the Nagas experiencing some intense pain and trauma physically, emotionally, and spiritually as a result of the British administrators, some of whom were British anthropologists? Are our Naga hurts more clearly attributable to the postBritish period? Have our own cultural narratives reflected spiritual restlessness, requiring a place to rest, because our cultural remains are displayed in various Western museums? Is repatriation of Naga an-

cestral remains or historic Naga artefacts crucial for the salvation of the future generations? Were the ancestral remains considered as stolen objects (theft)? Is there a question of insufficiency in our Naga cultural knowledge due to the absence of ancestral cultural remains like skulls and other human remains?

During my research, I interviewed Naga elders including the oldest man of Lazami village by the name Mixika who was 110 years old at the time (1994) and who had knowledge of the headhunting practices and my own father, Zhuikhu Zhimomi, who was a village Chief and a dobashi (interpreter) for the British administrators (London Gazette 1937, Chasie2017), I found that the headhunting practices of our forefathers were tied to our past ritualistic practices, describing how the heads of enemies were brought to the open field of the village to be showcased before the whole village community as trophies and our warriors celebrated. Let’s not forget both our forefathers and the Nagas today view ourselves as warriors with a proud history.

While the British colonial administrators clearly didn’t support the taking of heads, they certainly acknowledged the reality and uniqueness of Naga customary law. This addressed a calming mechanism regarding the Naga tribal agitation and to maintain a peaceful relationship with the Naga tribal communities. (Zhimomi 2001). As well, unlike some other indigenous peoples around the world, Nagas did not suffer genocide, brutal massacre, or dispossessions of their lands in the hands of the British administrators. The concept of trauma connected with the removal of headhunted skulls is not part of any Naga cultural narratives past or present that I am aware of. The taboos and distress, associated with viewing the dead bodies or even mentioning the names of the dead people or person–which are powerful part of the Aboriginal cultural practices in Australia – are not the same in Nagaland.

This brings me further to an area of concern about the discourse on the Naga repatriation project, which seems to involve a false equivalence of differing indigenous histories around the world – particularly of the journey

of Aboriginal people in Australia. Having lived in Australia for nearly three decades, I have learned of the reality of Aboriginal people in Australia and their ongoing generational trauma as a direct result of the early “white” settlers, the colonists’ harsh action and brutal policies of assimilation, cultural and ethnic genocide, forced removal of children from their families and forceful removal of the people from their lands. This brutal history included the removal of the human remains and other aspects of the culture, which were expropriated overseas for various purposes, causing deep distress down the generations.

In response, the Aboriginal community initiated their own efforts to reclaim their ancestral remains and artefacts linked to the traumatic historical events that they were subjected to. The efforts by indigenous people in Australia for the repatriation of those remains, therefore, have their own unique significance in the context of their own experiences, struggles and journey toward healing from historic and contemporary trauma.

Robyn Campbell, one of the South Australian First Nations representatives summed this up clearly when she said: “the first Nations people continued to suffer from the theft of our ancestors taken away from our country is a particular injustice…… we have never ceded the removal of our old peoples remains… we have been made sick and worried.”

To sum up my concerns stated above, the Naga researchers on the repatriation project seem to be conflating the unique Naga history and experience with the Aboriginal experience, which also is unique. It seems key concepts from the Aboriginal experience and struggle – such as theft, unfinished business, healing of the land, apology, trauma, and ‘from the heart’ – which are foreign to our Naga people, are being imported into the Naga discourse to describe our history and experience. It is a false equivalent for the Naga researchers to import external pedagogy born out of others’ historical pain and trauma and inject that into the Naga community’s discussion of its own affairs. It is misleading for Naga people. It is also a misappropriation of other people’s intellectual knowledge and deeply disrespectful to our fellow Indigenous people in Australia and elsewhere who had suffered gravely. Just as important, it is as disrespectful for us and our own unique stories about decades of suffering and trauma that Nagas bore at the hands of the Indian military. If we want to talk about torture, brutality, and trauma, then the focus must be with our past and current experiences with the Indian. Most Nagas will have plenty of stories related to the domination of the Indian rule if we are going to talk about healing, trauma, and apologies.

This is not to negate the role of the British colonials in Naga history for good or for ill, but we must be wary of falsely equating our colonial experiences with those of another indigenous people, while overlooking the brutality of the post-British period.

There is always respect for original work and original work is possible when we give more space for creativity and innovations. We are familiar with words like intellectual property rights. Intellectual property (IP) refers to creations of the mind, such as inventions; literary and artistic works; designs; and symbols, names, images, etc. IP is protected in law by, for example, patents, copyright and trademarks, which enable people to earn recognition or financial benefit from what they invent or create. In India, there are 7 types of intellectual property rights, namely – copyright, trademarks, patents, geographical indications, plant varieties, industrial designs and semiconductor integrated circuit layout designs.

A patent is an exclusive right granted for an invention. Generally speaking, a patent provides the patent owner with the right to decide how - or whether - the invention can be used by others. In exchange for this right, the patent owner makes technical information about the invention publicly available in the published patent document.

Copyright is a legal term used to describe the rights that creators have over their literary and artistic works. Works covered by copyright range from books,

music, paintings, sculpture and films, to computer programs, databases, advertisements, maps and technical drawings.

A trademark is a sign capable of distinguishing the goods or services of one enterprise from those of other enterprises. Trademarks date back to ancient times when artisans used to put their signature or “mark” on their products. There are always focuses and more stress on IP as it leads to more creativity and innovation. One of the global events related to IP is World IP day. It offers a unique opportunity to join with others around the globe to consider how intellectual property helps the global arts scene to flourish and enables the technological innovation that drives human progress.

The theme of World Intellectual Property 2023 is “Women and IP: Accelerating Innovation and Creativity”.

This year we are celebrating the “can do” attitude of women inventors, creators and entrepreneurs around the world and their ground-breaking work. We must be aware that women make up nearly half of the global population (49.58%) and represent a huge pool of talent, which remains largely untapped. There are IP rights around the world and it means researchers, inven-

tors, businesses, designers, artists and others can legally protect their innovative and creative outputs. Piracy is always a threat to original works and we must ban it as it is always against original work.

An environment in which innovation and creativity thrive, and which is diverse and inclusive, improves our chances of addressing the major challenges facing humanity, driving human progress, and making our lives healthier, safer, and more comfortable. There is no doubt that women in all regions are shaping the world through their imagination, ingenuity and hard work, but often face significant challenges in accessing the knowledge, skills, resources and support they need to thrive.

The world is already focusing on sustainability and we are aware of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) . IP is a critical incentive for innovation and creativity, which in turn are key to the United Nations SDGs success. Let us always encourage intellectual property rights and make the world more ethical and together we can do that.

tions on the repatriation project such as “how do we conduct burials once the remains were brought home?” and “how might we grapple with the difference through which we gain knowledge of Naga Culture?” as reported in a section of the media. These and other queries are not just good questions but are critical to genuine, open, and honest conversations that nurture reflection and integrity in the process. It is reported that those curious young Naga scholars should do their own investigation on other people’s stories outside Nagaland. While this will benefit further understanding and perspectives, we should not neglect and negate our own cultural knowledge, our unique Naga history, and our experiential struggle as a foundation. We can learn from others, but we do not have to import someone else’s narratives to make it our own story.

To me, the process of repatriation of the Naga cultural remains should be, first, grounded on a collaborative approach of the Government agency – department of Art and Culture - and Naga communities at large. This initiative should be about the possibilities of relocating a plethora of the Naga cultural artefacts and the capacity of managing the ways in which the artefacts should be shelved or displayed to avoid decadence and damage. This certainly can be done in consultation with the traditional Naga tribal bodies – precisely those bodies which have survived our experience of the British and Indian periods, and with our Naga leaders who can give an authentic cultural guidance. This way, the stories start from “micro” or bottomup at the grass roots and within the community and not starting top-down, from the macro level where academic researchers delivering a series of ‘lectures’, lecturing young students and Naga people on what it is we, the Nagas, are supposed to know and how we should be feeling about the past Naga historical experiences. The Naga community and the young scholars should not be steered by academic researchers with highly sensitive notions and experiences of other indigenous people, which are not equitable to our lived experiences and our Naga cultural heritage.

A salute to Dimapur authorities

The removal of countless footpath vendors by the district administration of Dimapur, the police and the DMC is truly a welcome step for a common citizen like me who uses the footpath for daily commuting. It’s a big relief for school going children who walk to school from their homes too.

Though we feel pity for the vendors yet the problem caused by them is uncountable. From blocking all footpaths, pavements and whatever spaces meant for parking vehicles they also block customers passage of the shops and affect the business activity of many shopkeepers.

Food vendors around the clock tower and circular road(Middle Point and NST colony areas) area should be placed at the super market area where there is sufficient space on the pavements and lots of parking spaces for vehicles so they should be allowed to continue to earn their livelihood. But some strict rules about their timing, littering and adhering to colony rules should be made to follow as many customers under influence of alcohol does unwanted activities around the nearby areas which disturbs the trainquil environment of the residents.

Eleven alleged bovine smugglers were arrested and 54 animals were rescued in separate incidents in Jammu and Kashmir’s Samba district, officials said. PM slams past govts for delayed projects

Rahul moves HC after failing to get relief in defamation case

AHMEDABAD, APR 25

(PTI): Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday filed an application in the Gujarat High Court challenging the order of the Surat sessions court which last week declined to stay his conviction in a criminal defamation case over his “Modi surname” remark, a lawyer said.

Congress advocate BM Mangukia confirmed Gandhi has filed an appeal in the HC here against the sessions court order.

The HC is expected to soon take up Gandhi’s application for hearing.

A metropolitan magistrate’s court in Surat on March 23 sentenced the former Congress president to two years in jail after convicting him under Indian Penal Code sections 499 and 500 (dealing with criminal defamation) in the 2019 case filed by Gujarat BJP MLA Purnesh Modi.

The case was registered against Gandhi following the BJP MLA’s complaint over his remark, “How come all thieves have Modi as the common surname?” made during an election rally at Kolar in Karnataka on April 13, 2019.

WhatsApp can now be used on multiple phones

(PTI): Messaging platform WhatsApp on Tuesday said it has introduced a feature that will allow its users to use the same WhatsApp account on multiple phones. The feature has started rolling out globally and will be available to everyone in the coming weeks, the Meta-owned platform said.

“Today, we’re improving our multi-device offering further by introducing the ability to use the same WhatsApp account on multiple phones,” WhatsApp announced.

The feature, highly requested by users, will enable them to “link your phone as one of up to four additional devices, the same as when you link with WhatsApp on web browsers, tablets and desktops”. Each linked phone connects to WhatsApp independently, ensuring that a user’s personal messages, media and calls are end-toend encrypted.

Priyanka Gandhi attacks BJP govt on corruption in poll-bound Karnataka

PM CARES: Cong questions donations by govt-owned firms

NEW DELHI, APR 25 (AGENCIES): The Congress has hit out at the Modi government after a report claimed that governmentrun companies accounted for 60 per cent of the total donations made by NSElisted firms to PM CARES, The Print.

Speaking at a press conference at the Congress headquarters here, party MP and spokesperson Abhishek Manu Singhvi said the fund lacked accountability and transparency, revealed a conflict of interest on the part of the government, and is “unconstitutional”.

“The controversies around the PM CARES fund prove that it has been set up by a highly uncaring government,” Singhvi added. The Prime Minister’s Citizen Assistance and Relief in Emergency Situations or PM CARES fund was set up at the beginning of the Covid pandemic. Accord -

ing to its website, the fund “consists entirely of voluntary contributions from individuals/organisations and does not get any budgetary support”.

“The admitted fact is that government-run firms, government-owned firms and government-property firms have contributed an overwhelming percentage of all contributions to the PM CARES fund. In a threeyear period from 2019 to 2022, these companies contributed just under 5,000 crores. Contributions of just under 60 per cent was

Th e top donors, he said, include the ONGC, NTPC, Power Grid Corporation, Indian Oil Corporation and the Power Finance Corporation. “This raises serious conceptual issues of accountability, lack of transparency, clear conflict of interest and constitutional issues. This is a fund administered of the PM, by the PM and for the PMO,” he said. He added: “It collects funds under the name and seal of the PM. It is advertised as exclusively public money. It utilises the enormous goodwill of the PMO and the PM. The socalled trustees apart from the PM are the defence minister, the home minister

and finance minister. With all this, amazingly, it has no accountability. There is no CAG audit.

“If you, the nation, file an RTI enquiry, it has been argued by the government of India that this (PM CARES) is not a public authority.” Singhvi said one of the reasons that the fund and the trust that runs it are kept out of these parameters is on the grounds that it does not receive any budgetary support.

“Now, look at the irony. You dis-apply things like CAG, RTI, government norms on the grounds that there is no budgetary support. And yet, government-owned and controlled companies, navratnas and miniratnas are the principal donors,” he said.

Indian banks unlikely to go Suisse way

(AGENCIES): The bank failures in the world’s largest economy and in Europe following the pandemic and war-induced tightening cycle posed a lot to brood over for policymakers on the vulnerability of financial systems. The concerns were particularly true for emerging market economies, who may have to struggle with fiscal packages to calm markets, ET report stated.

However, India’s banking system has considerably less chances to face such incidents, the finance ministry said today in a report.

“While incidents like those mentioned above are bound to happen in a rapid tightening cycle amid an uncertain economic environment, an analysis of the Indian banking system reveals that Indian banks appear well-placed to handle any stress emanating from the current tightening cycle,” the ministry said in its monthly economic review. “The importance accorded to system-wide

financial stability has its origins in the aftermath of the 2007-08 global financial crisis. The macro-and micro-prudential measures in recent years by the RBI and the government have culminated in the enhancement of risk absorption capacity, thereby improving the banking system’s stability.”

Banks face interest rate risk when the country’s policy rates increase rapidly in a short span of time. This spelled trouble for the two regional US banksSilicon Valley Bank and the First Republic Bank. Since March 2022, the Federal Reserve aggressively raised rates by 4.5 percentage points to tame galloping inflation rate. Subsequently, the yield on debt soared at a commensurate rate.

Days after the US saw its second and third largest banking failures, where the authorities had to step in to rescue the banks and depositors’ money, Swiss banking giant Credit Suisse got into an excruciating financial

crisis. After six consecutive hikes of a cumulative 250 basis points, the Reserve Bank of India’s rate-setting panel this month took a pause. Some experts believe most global central banks are also close to a peak or already done with interestrate hiking, amid the first signs of dents to growth now visible while fallout from financial-market tensions persist.

“The exposure and attunement to regular interest rate cycles have made Indian banks well-equipped to handle the cycles. This is unlike the case in advanced economies where long-term interest rates have been close to zero for an extended period of time,” India’s finance ministry said.

For advanced economies, financial participants expected the rates to remain at low levels. So, when rates went up sharply within a short time to curb inflationary pressures, vulnerabilities in the financial markets came to the fore, the ministry said.

Call to eliminate drug-resistant malaria...

He said in 1953 positive cases of malaria stood at 7.50 crores with 8 lakh deaths. However, this was brought down to 45,000 cases with 50 deaths throughout the country in 2022.

Kikheto informed that the highest positive case detected in Nagaland was 8,489 in 2009 while the darkest year was in 2006 when a total of 75 deaths due to the virus was reported.

However, with the initiative of the department and the programme and district officers, he said that there had been no malaria related deaths since 2018 till date. Kikheto stated during regional council meeting

and review of malaria by eight states recently, Nagaland emerged as the best in terms of initiatives taken and the best performing in the whole of Northeast India.

In this regard, Kikheto congratulated all the officers of the department especially the National Health Mission and officials in-charge of vector borne diseases.

He stressed on the need to create awareness in the minds of the people about the devastating effects on health, socio economic consequences because of malaria. “It is our responsibility to fight against this and to eliminate this disease. To achieve our goal, we need strong coordination, political support and coordination,” he said.

Kikheto sought the support of the line departments, institutions, public, NGOs and faith-based organisa -

tions since H&FW department alone could not do it. “It should be a mass movement,” he added.

He said the world was aiming to eradicate malaria by 2020-30 and similarly Nagaland had also made it its mission to follow suit.

The programme was chaired by mission director, NHM, Dr Ritu Thurr while principal director, H&FW, Dr Vibeituonuo M Sachü, gave the opening remarks.

NEW DELHI, APR 25 (PTI): Gold prices jumped Rs 440 to Rs 60,580 per 10 grams in the national capital on Tuesday amid gains in precious metal prices globally, according to HDFC Securities.

Silver, however, declined Rs 360 to Rs 75,240 per kg. “Spot gold prices in the Delhi markets traded at Rs 60,580 per 10 grams, up Rs 440 per 10 grams,” Saumil Gandhi, Senior Analyst - Commodities at HDFC Securities, said.

The youth body advised Jamir not to point fingers at others when he himself was responsible for so many wrongs. It said Nagaland and the world had moved on and the present generation of leaders were making sincere efforts to improve governance, streamline delivery mechanisms and deliver the goods.

It claimed that the current leadership was responding to the voice of the people with an approach where every citizen was a member of Team Nagaland.

Ukrainian officials said the Russian military used S-300 air defense missiles to attack Kupiansk in the Kharkiv region, hitting the museum of local history in the city center. The Russian military has repeatedly used S-300s, which Ukraine’s air defenses can’t intercept, to attack ground targets.

The president of Guatemala appealed to other governments to respect Taiwan’s sovereignty during an official visit Tuesday at a time when China’s ruling Communist Party is stepping up efforts to isolate the self-ruled island democracy Beijing claims as its own territory.

President Alejandro Giammattei’s government is one of a dwindling number that have official relations with Taipei instead of Beijing. Legislators from the United States and Europe have visited to show support in the face of Beijing’s attempts to

intimidate the island, but their governments have official relations with China, not Taiwan. Taiwan and China split in 1949 after a civil war. Taiwan never has been part of the People’s Republic of China, but the Communist Party says it is obliged to unite with the mainland, by force if necessary.

UAE jails Mumbai actress in ‘planted’ drugs case; kin to appeal to PM, MEA

In an unnerving development, a Mumbai actress has been jailed in the UAE’s Sharjah after she was found carrying drugs hidden in an award trophy even as the Mumbai Police nabbed a person who had trapped her and two others into becoming “drug mules”.

Chrisann Pereira’s distraught family here said that Chrisann, 27 - in jail since April 1 - is innocent and sought her early release from the UAE prison after her bail plea was rejected on Monday (April 24) there.

“We are appealing to the Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Minister for External Affairs for their intervention in the matter to secure the release of our daughter... After the Mumbai Police investigation, it is clear that she was framed in the whole thing,” her mother Premila Pereira told IANS.

The Mumbai Police Crime Branch, which is probing the case, have nabbed the prime accused Anthony Paul, 35, a bakery

owner of Borivali and his associate, a banker Rajesh Bubhate, 34, alias Ravi. Consuming foods that have a lot of “free sugars” significantly raised the risk of heart disease and stroke, according to researchers from the University of Oxford in the United Kingdom. They found that the risk increased based on how much more free sugar someone ate.

Free sugars are defined as all sugar added to a food by the manufacturer, cook, or consumer, plus sugars naturally present in honey, syrups, and unsweetened fruit juice. Free sugar does not include those naturally occurring in whole fruits or vegetables.

25 (PTI): Gujarat Titans produced a clinical performance to outclass Mumbai Indians by 55 runs in a completely one-sided IPL match here on Tuesday.

Set a stiff target of 208, MI were stopped at 152 for nine. MI didn’t get the kind of start they would have liked and were struggling at 29 for the loss of captain Rohit Sharma’s wicket in six overs, the team failing miserably to utilise the powerplay.

SC issues notice on wrestlers’ plea for sexual harassment

(IANS): The Supreme Court on Tuesday called the sexual harassment allegations against Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) President and BJP MP Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh “serious” and issued notice to the Delhi Police in the matter.

A bench, headed by Chief Justice of India D.Y. Chandrachud and comprising Justice P.S. Narasimha, said: “There are serious allegation in plea on behest of international wrestlers with regards to sexual harassment meted out to them. Issue notice returnable on Friday. Liberty to serve standing counsel NCT Delhi. The complaints which form an attachment in sealed cover and shall be again resealed.”

The plea was mentioned before the bench by senior advocates Kapil Sibal and Narendra Hooda, representing the wrestlers.

Sibal submitted that this is the wrestlers’ matter and they are sitting in dharna, and seven women have complained and one is a minor. He said the wrestlers have been sitting on

a protest, but “the police are not acting... look at the allegations. ...Even police personnel can be prosecuted for not registering an FIR”.

Citing that matter involved sexual harassment, Sibal stressed that police were bound to register a case. The top court directed redaction of the identities of the petitioners from their petition and said that the redacted copy of the plea should be made available in the public domain.

The plea -- filed by three women wrestlers, and four complainants supporting the petition -- said they attempted several times to convince Delhi Police to register an FIR, but they failed.

The plea said women athletes who make the nation proud are facing sexual harassment, and instead of getting the support they deserve, they are being forced to run from pillar to post to get justice. It said the accused person in this case is an influential person and is misusing the process of law to evade justice and further manipulating the legal system and obstructing justice.

FC ended their search for a major trophy on Tuesday as they lifted the Super Cup title beating Bengaluru FC 2-1 at the EMS Corporation Stadium, Kozhikode on Tuesday. The star of the night for Odisha was Diego Mauricio, who again showcased his goal scoring abilities by scoring both the goals for his team. Bengaluru FC skipper Sunil Chhetri scored the consolation goal from a penalty in the 85th minute.

Bengaluru FC desperately missed the services of Javier Hernandez, who was ruled out of the summit clash after suffering an injury. Hernandez’s ability to hold the ball and open spaces was what helped BFC throughout the season and without the Spaniard, the Bengaluru FC midfield appeared listless.

From the beginning, Bengaluru FC tried to attack Odisha’s box while the latter was more than happy to stay back and defend. They waited for their opportunity patiently and it came in the 22nd minute.

LONDON, APR 25 (AGENCIES): Formula One’s Saturday sprint races will become standalone events with a new ‘Shootout’ qualifying session replacing final practice at six grands prix in 2023, starting with Azerbaijan this weekend. FIA Formula One commission, which includes the 10 teams, voted unanimously for the change at a meeting in Geneva on Tuesday. The decision was approved by an e-vote of the World Motor Sport Council.

The changes mean Friday’s qualifying, which follows an hour-long opening practice session, will set the grid for Sunday’s main grand prix instead of the Saturday sprint. There will be a half-hour ‘Sprint Shootout’ qualifying on Saturday morning to determine the starting order for the same day’s 100km sprint race, which offers points for the top 8 finishers but no longer sets the grid for Sunday. This qualifying will be divided into three parts with the first phase lasting 12 minutes, the second 10 minutes and final top 10 shootout 8 minutes. Drivers will have to use new medium compound tyres in the first 2 phases and softs for phase three.

“Inspite of the lapse of three days i.e., from April 21-24, no conclusive action has been taken by the Delhi Police. This clearly depicts a sad state of affairs and a clear violation of human rights. It is the responsibility of the police to ensure the safety of all citizens especially of those who are most vulnerable, however, having miserably failed to discharge their duties, the very institution that is meant to safeguard them,” said the plea.

With several politicians and farmer organisations in their corner, India’s top wrestlers on Tuesday intensified their protest against Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh and asserted that they won’t leave the protest site until the WFI president, who is facing sexual harassment charges, is arrested.

The wrestlers, including Vinesh Phogat, Sakshi Malik and Bajrang Punia, alleged that the WFI chief is now resorting to strong arm tactics and trying to break the “victims” by issuing threats and offering bribes.

Vinesh claimed that the Delhi police has leaked names of the victims to Brij Bhushan, who is using Haryana Wrestling Association secretary general Rakesh and coach Mahavir Prasad Bishnoi to threaten the families of the women wrestlers, who have filed complaints against the WFI chief.

“Brij Bhushan now knows the names of the complainants. The Delhi police has leaked the names

to him. They are issuing threats. They are trying to break the victims and that’s why the delay in lodging an FIR,” Vinesh told reporters.

“We thought the sports ministry will give us justice but it did not happen. But we have faith in judiciary. If the Supreme Court takes everything related to this case under its wings and we are sure that no game will be played, only then we will leave the protest site.

“If just an FIR is lodged, we will not go from here. He has to be put behind the bars. If he remains outside, we won’t be safe. How will we train, if he is roaming free,” Vinesh said. Would they be content if the police file an FIR and begins investigation?

Vinesh said, “There are hundreds and thousands of FIRs against many people. But it is a question of justice. Only when are sure that we will not be tricked, we will end protest, otherwise we are here.”

Paris 2024 to hire 116 boats for unprecedented opening ceremony

A total of 116 Parisian and regional boats from 42 river companies have been identified to sail on the River Seine for the opening ceremony of the Paris Olympic Games on July 26, 2024, the organisers have announced.

While 98 per cent of the boats will be hired from the Paris ecosystem, Batorama, a Strasbourg-based provider, will also send their boats to participate in the opening ceremony next year, a Xinhua report said.

“On July 26, 2024, more than a billion viewers will turn to Paris for the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games,” said Paris 2024 president Tony Estanguet on Monday.

“We are very happy and grateful to be able to count on them to make the organization of this unprecedented, exciting, and we hope, the greatest ceremony in the history of the Games possible,” he added.

For the first time in a summer edition of the Games, the opening ceremony of Paris 2024 will take place outside of a stadium and in the heart of the city.

The boats will transport the athletes, sailing six kilometers from Pont d’Austerlitz to the Pont d’Iena, with the river and the capital’s iconic monuments like Notre Dame, the Louvre, and the Eiffel Tower serving as the back-

drop. The cruising route is also one of the classic tourist attractions of Paris.

An estimated 100,000 tickets will be sold for the opening ceremony, ranging from 90 euros to 2,700 euros.

Paris has hosted the world’s biggest sporting event twice before, in 1900 and 1924. It will be the second city after London to stage the Olympics for the third time when athletes around the world gather in the French capital next year from July 26 to August 11.
