New species of tree discovered in Arunachal
ITANAGAR, MAY 25 (PTI): Researchers have discovered a new species of tree in Arunachal Pradesh.
The discovery of the new tree species in Arunachal Pradesh was published in the May 19 edition of the Edinburgh Journal of Botany.
Meiogyne Arunachalensis was discovered by researchers during a biodiversity expedition to the “Adi hills of Arunachal Pradesh,” the report published in the journal said, adding that the expedition was supported by the Hem Chand Mahindra Foundation, the Wildlife Institute of India, and Forest department of Arunachal Pradesh. Researcher Navendu Page, one of the members of the group, mentioned in the report that this is the third species from India and the first from eastern Himalayan and Northeast India. “The genus Meiogyne is distributed throughout South and Southeast Asia and includes approximately 33 described taxa,” Page said. The species shows morphological similarity with Meiogyne maxiflora, a species distributed in Thailand, but it differs in a number of vegetative and reproductive characteristics, Page said in the report.
Narendra Modiments. He said: “Many recruitments could not be completed on time due to the earlier process where each department had different rules and the candidates had to appear for different examinations for different departments. development in the northeast since he became PM of the country.
Manipur had witnessed much development and peace had been prevailing in the state under Modi’s leadership, he claimed. On the prevailing unrest in the state, Rai appealed to the people of Manipur not to have any apprehension and to have faith in the government. He expressed hope that peace and normalcy would be restored in the state at the earliest. “Justice would be delivered as per the law of the land, keeping in view the interest of the
people of the state,” he said. Informing that he would visit the periphery of the state, Rai assured that all sorts of problems would be solved under the supervision of the Union home minister. He sought cooperation from all sections of people towards the government’s effort to restore peace and normalcy. The visit of the MoS home and came at a time when a team of ministers and MLAs of the ruling parties led by Speaker of Manipur Assembly Th Satyabarta were camping at Guwahati to meet with Amit Shah.
HM goes to Guwahati, yet does not visit Manipur which is ‘burning’: Congress
NEW DELHI, MAY 25
(PTI): The Congress on Thursday attacked Home Minister Amit Shah over his Assam visit, saying he goes all the way to Guwahati but does not deem it fit to visit Manipur which has been “burning for 22 days”.
Shah is on a day-long visit to Assam to attend three events to mark the completion of two years of the Himanta Biswa Sarmaled BJP government in the state. Taking a dig at Shah, Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh said, “The Union Home Minister goes all the way to Guwahati today, but does not deem it fit to visit Imphal when Manipur has been burning for 22 days.”
“This is the same Union Home Minister who held 16 rallies and 15 road shows in Karnataka, but cannot find time for the people of Manipur who are suffering a lot due to the ideology and politics of the so-called Double Engine Sarkar,” Ramesh said in a tweet. Later, at an event in Guwahati, Shah said that he will travel to Manipur to resolve all disputes, but all
groups should remove mistrust and suspicion among themselves.
“I will go to Manipur soon and stay there for three days but before that, both groups should remove mistrust and suspicion among themselves and ensure that peace is restored in the state,” Shah said.
The Centre will ensure that justice is given to all who suffered in the clashes which broke out in the state, but “people must hold a dialogue to ensure peace in the state,” the Home Minister said. The Congress on Wednesday had demanded that Prime Minister Narendra Modi call a meeting of community leaders of Manipur in an effort to bring peace in the ethnic violencehit state.
Congress leader Ajoy Kumar had said India is in “danger” if things are not set right in the northeastern state as it shares the international border with Myanmar. Clashes broke out in Manipur after a ‘Tribal Solidarity March’ was organised in the hill districts of the state on May 3 to protest against the Meitei
community’s demand for Scheduled Tribe (ST) status.
The violence in Manipur was preceded by tension over the eviction of Kuki villagers from reserve forest land, which had led to a series of smaller agitations. Meiteis account for about 53 per cent of Manipur’s population and live mostly in the Imphal Valley. Tribals -- Nagas and Kukis -- constitute another 40 per cent of the population and reside in the hill districts.
The ethnic clashes claimed over 70 lives and some 10,000 army and paramilitary personnel had to be deployed to restore normalcy in the northeastern state.
During a meeting with Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Wednesday, the governor stressed on the security of borders and the need for collaborative efforts between forces and villagers living near international boundaries. Parnaik is on an official visit to New Delhi.
He apprised the defence minister of the need for providing additional Central Armed Police Forces to guard the border as well as deter smuggling of narcotics in the state, a Raj Bhavan official said on Thursday.
The governor also stressed on reactivation of the advanced landing ground (ALG) at Alinye in Dibang Valley district and the construction of another
ALG at Dirang in West Kameng, which, he said, would go a long way in optimising operational efficiency and facilitating tourism in the state.
Parnaik also met Union Minister of State for Civil Aviation General V K Singh and deliberated upon the construction of new airstrips and infrastructure at ALGs to augment flight services in the state. The governor proposed the construction of new airstrips at Richi (Daporijo) and Tarmoba (Aalo) and requested the minister to instruct the Airport Authority of India to explore the techno-economic feasibility study to prepare a master plan.
Ibobi Singh on Thursday questioned the Central government as well as the State government on their alleged silence even after 21 days of turmoil in the state.
Even after 21 days since the spate of violence, no positive action to end the crisis was taken up till today, the Congress Legislator Party (CLP) leader alleged.
Addressing reporters at Imphal Congress Bhavan, O Ibobi Singh said Congress was unable to remain silent as the double engine government failed to take appropriate action to save the life and property of the people of both the conflicting communities. He said tension is still prevailing in the state as killings and burning of houses continue unabated. He added that People in the hill-valley peripheries are
leading a life of anxiety.
“The fire is yet to be douse d. Uncertainty on what would happen in the next movement still hangs in the minds of the people,” Ibobi said. People have started questioning what the BJP governments in the state and Centre are doing to resolve the crisis. “Why is the so-called double engine government failing to act to resolve the issue? Are they waiting for the killing of more lives and more houses to be destroyed? Is there a hidden agenda of the BJP’s double engine government behind the present turmoil
in the state?” the former three times chief minister asked. Asserting that tolerable limit has been crossed, Ibobi said that the sitting Congress MLAs decided to have an audience with President Droupadi Murmu and seek her intervention to end the crisis to restore normalcy in the state at the earliest.
“We will be leaving for New Delhi tomorrow or next day to meet the President. We will submit a memorandum seeking her good office’s intervention to end the current ethnic crisis in the state,” he said.
If necessary, the MLAs will seek appointment with the Prime Minister and Union home minister to seek their direct intervention to resolve the crisis, the former three time chief minister said. Manipur is a very small state. Any untoward incidents that would lead to the loss of life and properties can be prevented if the intelligence agencies use their available resources.
Meghalaya ministers appeals VPP’s chief to end hunger strike
Correspondent
SHILLONG, MAY 25:
Two Meghalaya Ministers Dr. Mazel Ampareen Lyngdoh and Rakkam A Sangma on Thursday appealed the opposition Voice of the People Party (VPP) legislator, Ardent Miller Basaiawmoit to withdraw his ongoing fast over the state’s job reservation policy.
Basaiawmoit began his indefinite hunger strike on Tuesday to mount pressure on the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance government to review the state job reservation policy.
“I will continue fasting till the government agree to VPP’s demand. The government is fully aware of our demand,” said Basaiaw -
moit, who is staging his hunger strike at a parking lot near the additional state secretariat.
Lyngdoh, who is also the chairperson of a Committee to examine the job roster system, appealed to the VPP legislator Basaiawmoit to come to the negotiation table and discuss the matter.
“I request Basaiawmoit please come to the negotiating table and let us discuss this matter. I cannot promise Basaiawmoit whatever he says it will be get done because I have to first understand what he wants,” Lyngdoh said
“I feel that if he stop this hunger strike it will be good for everyone and we could get together and
discuss this matter without harming anyone of the communities because we are Meghalayans,” she added.
The state reservation policy earmarks 40 percent each for the indigenous people of Khasi-Jaintia and Garo Hills regions, five percent more is reserved for other tribes of the state and the rest is open category.
Education Minister Rakkam Sangma also strongly appealed to Basiawmoit to end his indefinite fast and come forward to the negotiating table to discuss the matter.
He also expressed concern that the Supreme Court may strike down the state
job reservation policy that the state is currently enjoying right now.
The Education Minister cited a case from 2014 in Maharashtra where the Supreme Court had invalidated an ordinance enacted by the state government that exceeded the permissible reservation limit of 50 per cent for a particular tribe.
The apex court subsequently issued a circular to all states, including Meghalaya, reinforcing the 50 per cent cap.
“Therefore, I appeal to every citizen and political leaders of the state that we have to understand the consequences of the actions
done today. With this kind of politics and drama we are playing with fire and that fire will burn everybody including VPP,” Sangma said. Meanwhile, supporters of the VPP and various political leaders and civil society groups visited Basaiawmoit to express their solidarity with him.
United Democratic Party (UDP) general secretary Jemino Mawthoh who visited Basaiawmoit said that his party, which is part of the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance coalition government, would soon meet the government and demand to review the job reservation policy.

Brains over brawn
Girls outshone boys as per the results of the Nagaland board of School Education (NbSE) examination 2023 for both High School Leaving Certificate (HSLC) and Higher Secondary School Leaving Certificate(HSSLC). It has become almost like an annual feature where girls do better than boys in the NbSE exams since the past few decades. Overall, out of a total of 17130 qualified, 9350 were girls and 7780 were boys. In the top 20 merit list, out of a total of 99 candidates, 66 were girls and 33 were boys. In HSSLC examination, the girls again proved their mettle as per the results of different streams. In Arts, the pass percentage was girls (86.27%) and boys (78.44 %). In Commerce the pass percentage was girls (90.34 %) and boys (82.47 %). In Science, the pass percentage was -girls (90.39 %) and boys (82.51 %). In the top 10 list in Arts stream all 18 positions were held by girls while boys drew a blank. In Commerce, there were eight girls and four boys while in Science there was gender equality with nine girls and nine boys. The achievements of girl candidates during the past few decades convey a strong message that they are capable and dependable. perhaps this could be due to paradigm shift in society that once was heavily loaded in favour of boys. It is a welcome change since progress is about partnership and no critical segment can be ignored for whatever reasons. Society has acknowledged that when it comes to consistency, girls can be trusted to do that. According to findings , girls today are purpose driven as they have become more confident of their abilities in getting better-paid professional jobs. Even in sports, women are proving their mettle in sports and the military. It is also found that girls are more attentive and can sit for longer periods than boys and therefore, are able to engage in processoriented thinking while the boys engage in a lot of physical activity and are more inclined to goaloriented thinking. perhaps most telling, however, is how the genders are raised during childhood. Males are raised to be independent thinkers, while females are raised to be thinkers capable of arriving at a decision that’s good for a group, rather than an individual. In a male-dominated society like Nagaland, the imbalance in investment in education that favor boys over girls, has shifted though changes that are slowly taking place. As against political quota, it is time to walk the talk in giving women quota in employment. Unless there is significant change in attitude in this regard progress would be incomplete. A dramatic shift is needed when one considers the fact that in addition to child bearing, women are the main work force in the state and contribute much to the economy. perhaps the old adage proves true- educate a man, and you educate an individual. Educate a woman, and you educate a nation. In this day and age, women are no longer content to play second fiddle as they have proved that anything men can do, women can do better.
DailyDevotion The Good or The Best?
If you take the left, then I will go to the right; or, if you go to the right, then I will go to the left.
—Genesis 13:9
As soon as you begin to live the life of faith in God, fascinating and physically gratifying possibilities will open up before you. These things are yours by right, but if you are living the life of faith you will exercise your right to waive your rights, and let God make your choice for you. God sometimes allows you to get into a place of testing where your own welfare would be the appropriate thing to consider, if you were not living the life of faith. But if you are, you will joyfully waive your right and allow God to make your choice for you. This is the discipline God uses to transform the natural into the spiritual through obedience to His voice.
Whenever our right becomes the guiding factor of our lives, it dulls our spiritual insight. The greatest enemy of the life of faith in God is not sin, but good choices which are not quite good enough. The good is always the enemy of the best. In this passage, it would seem that the wisest thing in the world for Abram to do would be to choose. It was his right, and the people around him would consider him to be a fool for not choosing.
Many of us do not continue to grow spiritually because we prefer to choose on the basis of our rights, instead of relying on God to make the choice for us. We have to learn to walk according to the standard which has its eyes focused on God. And God says to us, as He did to Abram, “…walk before Me…” (Genesis 17:1).

~ Wilma RudolphNew Parliament building inauguration debate unites Opposition
Battle royal begins for Lok Sabha elections 2024. over the new building for Parliament. Combined opposition led by the Congress has decided to boycott the inauguration of the new building of Parliament on May 28 and even may consider abandoning of the new building.
It has brought virtually entire opposition on one platform. Releasing the Joint Statement of Like-Minded Opposition Parties, Sanjay Rout, Shiv Sena (UBT) MP said, “All opposition parties have decided to boycott the inauguration of the new Parliament building on May 28 and we will also do the same,” said Raut. The statement has name of the Congress and 18 other parties.
It paves the way for most non-BJP parties coming together on a common issue of not maintaining propriety and parliamentary tradition of the protocol precedence of President of India. The joint opposition has said the President could not be ignored and prime minister cannot take the precedence in matters of Parliament. It is possible that the entire opposition would meet in Delhi to decide the course of action for the elections to 2024, just a year ahead. The coming
together of the Opposition would force BJP to have new strategies to adopt and throw challenges to keep the rivals at bay. The Indian politics is warming for an intense year-long electoral battle and polarisation of votes.
If the boycott extends to the new building itself as some parties expressed so, it can lead to almost a direct clash between the ruling party and the opposition conglomerate. It is unprecedented in the history of Indian democracy.
It is to be seen if it smoothens up the internal contradictions of the opposition as also how it would share the seats in each of the states. Though AAP is part of the combine it is yet not clear how it would stay together with Congress.
At present Lok Sabha has 543 members and Rajya Sabha 250. There is no Central Hall in the new building. Joint sessions would be held in the Lok Sabha chamber.
It is likely from 2026 as per a 2020 announcement.
This is to allow representation in tune with the rising population. It is being questioned by the opposition as if this formula is followed northern India would have more representation and the South India would lose many
seats., because of population imbalance. Since population has receded in the South, it will lose proportional representation. The North East is likely to have minimum rise. The opposition says Parliament cannot work on hypotheses. Congress is also questioning which census to be the basis for the new representation formula. Last census was in 2011. No census for 2021 could be conducted for the covid19 lockdown. No arbitrary decision on such sensitive issues could be imposed. There is strong concern.
building of Parliament was laid by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi.
A large section of parliamentarians still believes that the parliamentary functioning should continue from the iconic present Parliament House. The new building could be used for flunky conferences and other uses.
Shivaji SarkarAn emerging view is that the number of Lok Sabha seats should be frozen at the present level and there was little need to increase the numbers as it would be unwieldy, cumbersome and impractical. Apart the cost of parliamentary operations to grow manifold and functioning of the House itself would face critical problems.
The present building of the Parliament was completed in 1927, and is now going to be almost 100 years old. The Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha passed resolutions for a new building for the Parliament. Consequently, on 10 December 2020, the foundation stone of the new
In a joint communique on Wednesday, 19 parties led by Congress have stated that they would boycott the inauguration as against the protocol it is not being done by the President Draupadi Murmu, as is the convention, said Sanjay Raut.
“The inauguration of a new Parliament building is a momentous occasion. Despite our belief that the government is threatening democracy, we were open to sinking our differences and marking this occasion,” the statement read.
The joint statement said: “Undemocratic acts are not new to the Prime Minister, who has relentlessly hollowed out the Parliament. Opposition Members of Parliament have been disqualified, suspended and muted when they raised the issues of the people of India.”
The statement adds MPs from the Treasury benches
have disrupted Parliament. Many controversial legislations, including the three farm laws, have been passed with almost no debate, and Parliamentary Committees have been practically made defunct. The new Parliament building has been built at great expense during a once-in-a-century pandemic with no consultation with the people of India or MPs, for whom it is apparently being built, the opposition parties said. “When the soul of democracy has been sucked out from the Parliament, we find no value in a new building. We announce our collective decision to boycott the inauguration of the new Parliament building,” the statement added.
RJD Rajya Sabha MP Manoj Jha said that there is a need for course correction with the entire Parliament Building inauguration. Bihar Deputy Chief Minister Tejashwi Yadav added “We will boycott this,” said Tejashwi Yadav. CPI(M) general secretary Sitaram Yechury accused PM Modi of “bypassing” the President when stone was laid. “Now too at the inauguration. Unacceptable”.
TMC MP Derek O’Brien took to Twitter to announce
the party’s decision. “Parliament is not just a new building; it is an establishment with traditions, values, precedents and rules – it is the foundation of Indian democracy. PM Modi doesn’t get that For him, Sunday’s inauguration of the new building is all about I, ME, MYSELF. So count us out.”
TMC MP Mahua Moitra tweeted “President of India is number 1, vice president is no 2 and PM is third. This is not Modiji’s grihapravesh that he built with his own money. Not attending May 28 party.”
Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla will dedicate to the nation the new Parliament building on May 28. Invitations have been sent in both physical and digital forms to the MPs of both Houses.
The statement includes the names of the Indian National Congress, Aam Aadmi Party, Nationalist Congress Party, Shiv Sena (UBT) CPI-M, CPI, Samajwadi Party, Rashtriya Janata Dal, Jharkhand Mukti Morcha, National Conference, Kerala Congress (mani) Revolutionary Socialist Party, Vidhuthalalai Chiruthaigal Katchi, MDMK, Indian Union Muslim League, and Rashtriya Lok Dal.
PM Modi in Japan & Papua New Guinea: An assessment
There is merit in viewing the world order today as being in a state of flux. Amidst the global uncertainty caused by Russias invasion of Ukraine, India remains a powerful voice of reason and sanity. This geo-political backdrop offers an overview of the rationale for Prime Minister Narendra Modis three-nation tour to Japan, Papua New Guinea and Australia.
The central message of these visits is that India has arrived at the global stage. Modi has done well by connecting the dots in all three countries on issues of bilateral and international concern, ensuring that India’s voice resonates globally.
Additionally, the Prime Minister’s meeting with the Indian diaspora everywhere is a sure sign that his message is carried forward by those who meet him in their country of residence. It is this connect which often gets missed out, but plays a very important part in the process of strategic communications.
The G7 Summit held in Hiroshima, was attended by Modi, his third such appearance as an invitee. The clarion call for dialogue and diplomacy on Ukraine, though not directly mentioned, indicated India’s continuing concern over the conflict and its global fallout on energy, food and national economies.
The sanctity of respecting the territorial integrity of nations was emphasized in the context of recent incursions by China across the Line of Actual Control and Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Significantly, this is also the consistent line that India has taken since February 2022, when Russia invaded Ukraine.
Ukraine took centre stage at the G7 Summit, what with President Volodymyr Zelensky meeting most world leaders on the sidelines of the event, including Prime Minister Modi.
In fact, the Prime Minister went a step further to say: “Today we heard from President Zelenskk. I also met him yesterday. I do not consider the current situation as an issue of politics or economy. I believe it is an issue of humanity, an issue of human values.”
This remark needs to be contextualized as Modi had told Russian President Vladimir Putin in Samarkand last year that this is “not the era for war”.
Pertinently, while other nations look at Ukraine as a zero-sum game, India has taken the lead in propagating a truly global perspective.
That President Zelenskk “appeared” at Hiroshima, as he did earlier at the Arab League summit in Riyadh, displayed the G7s eagerness to drum up support for Ukraine.
The scene then shifted to Papua New Guinea where Modi became the first Indian Prime Minister to visit. Notably, India’s presence at the Forum for India-Pacific Islands Cooperation meeting at Port Moresby signaled New Delhi’s renewed interest in the Pacific region, traditionally known for the presence of people of Indian origin.
Chinese political ingress and influence in the Pacific island countries in the last several years has created a challenge not only for neighbouring Australia, whose national security is most impacted, but also for other countries in SouthEast Asia and the Quad.
Modi’s oblique reference to China, while speaking at the Forum that even though those considered trustworthy were “not standing by our sides in times of need” will now have to matched by India and ensure that it becomes a reliable development partner. India has a lot to offer, both in terms of technology and manpower. Lest we forget India can also ensure affordability. The only thing required is connectivity with the Pacific Islands region. It is here that Australia and the Quad come in. The former is undoubtedly perturbed by Chinese influence in the Pacific Islands. However, the collective efforts of India, Australia
and Quad partners could provide a very effective platform to intervene in the region. Diaspora in this region is one prime mover, of course this is restricted mainly to Fiji, but the broader canvas can be handled by considering the requirements of each of the island nations.
Issues pertaining to development, climate change, coastal security and many other aspects of small island living can be discussed and debated. The starting point for this endeavour comes from Modi’s historic visit.
James Marape, the Prime Minister of Papua New Guinea, speaking at the Third Forum for India Pacific Islands Cooperation (FIPIC) Summit, hailed Modi as the leader of the Global South and said all island nations will rally behind India at all international forums. He sought Modi’s good offices to bring their narrative to the attention of platforms like G7 and G20. There is thus an opening for India, both bilaterally and multilaterally to engage with the Pacific Islands.
Modi’s latest diplomatic outreach has two interesting anecdotes which highlight his personal charisma and popularity. The first was US President Joe Biden hugging him at the G7 summit and reportedly asking the latter the reasons for his popularity. Modi is scheduled to
visit the US in July and apparently requests for attending his public meetings are already overflowing. The other anecdote is from Papua New Guinea, where the Marape touched Modi’s feet when he arrived at Port Moresby. Marape is younger than Modi and may have been told that in India it is a tradition to touch an elder’s feet to seek blessings. But the spontaneity of the act suggests something beyond mere formality.
As the Modi juggernaut rolls on abroad, several things become clear. India has arrived on the world stage. It always was; today it is present with a bigger stake and seeks recognition. Signalling the new normal with assertive diplomacy and connect to the Indian diaspora have led to some degree of resistance within nations. Countries like the UK and Australia occasionally demonstrate anti-India sentiments by “permitting” activities which are inimical to New Delhi’s interests.
At the end of the day, the Prime Minister’s visits also strongly signal that engagement is not merely for the sake of it, but requires a genuine recognition of each other’s security concerns. This is the key takeaway from the latest tour of Japan, and Papua New Guinea.

10 mindful habits to live a more meaningful life
Are you curious about what sets successful people apart from the rest? Have you ever wondered how they manage to find purpose, meaning, and motivation in their lives?
Manish Behl, Mindfulness expert, Spiritual thinker, Motivational Speaker, and Author says, “The other day, my 17 years son asked me. Dad, I am not finding my purpose and motivation.
I am not sure what I want to be when I grow up. Many of us go through this on a daily basis, feeling stuck in a job or profession, having lost passion for work and life, or not having the same drive as we used to have years ago.
It’s no secret that we all want to live a meaningful and fulfilling life, one that’s more than just going through the motions. The good news is that you can learn how to achieve your goals and live a more meaningful life by adopting mindful habits practiced by most successful people.”
He adds, “Mindfulness helps you find clarity and connection to your values, passions, and goals by being present in the moment. It can help you understand yourself and the world around you, giving you direction and purpose in life, ultimately leading to a more fulfilling existence.”
The Mindfulness expert shares with IANSlife, ten amazing daily habits that can help one reach full potential and live a more meaningful life: Make an early start: It may sound like a nightmare, but trust me, it’s worth it. Waking up early is a habit shared by almost all successful people. Personally, I love the morning energy as it helps me meditate, plan my goals, exercise, and make time for loved ones. Early risers are more productive, creative, and optimistic, with a positive attitude and sense of accomplishment. Wake up early and make the most of your day! “Don’t snooze your life away - seize the day with an early start and who knows, you might even become a morning person”
- Manish Behl
Start with gratitude: Now that you’ve made the effort to wake up early, don’t just swing out of bed, start your day off with a positive mindset. Take a moment to reflect on three things you’re grateful for today. It could be something big or small, such as your health, your family, or a good cup of tea or coffee. This will help you cultivate a positive mindset and appreciate what you have. Gratitude connects us to a higher purpose and inspires us to share our joy
and kindness with the world.
Set daily intentions: Setting intentions is like programming your inner compass toward what you want to achieve or how you want to show up in life. By setting daily intentions, you can bring more meaning and joy into your life while improving your well-being and productivity. Successful people set intentions every morning, such as “I will be productive and creative today” or “I will be kind and compassionate to everyone I meet”. You can use these daily intentions to start your day with purpose and focus.
Meditate: Meditation is a powerful tool to discover your true self and purpose. By meditating every day, you can quiet your mind, connect with your inner wisdom, and align with your values.
Successful people meditate regularly to clear their thoughts and gain perspective on their challenges and opportunities. You can start with 10 minutes of guided meditation. “Free your mind and the rest will follow”Manish Behl Just one thing at a time: Multitasking is a common practice in our busy lives. It might seem like a good way to get more done in less time, but in reality, it erodes your productivity
and happiness. According to studies, multitasking reduces efficiency and even damages our brain cells. It also makes you more stressed and less mindful. So try to focus on one task at a time and give it your full attention. You’ll be more efficient and effective.
“Master art of single-tasking ... focus on doing one thing at a time. Complete one task and then go to the next one” - Manish Behl
Connect to your
“WHY”: Your ‘why’ is the reason behind everything you do, and knowing it can keep you motivated and focused. Aligning your actions with your values can create a meaningful life that fulfills and inspires you. Before taking action, ask yourself ‘why’ to ensure you’re making the right decisions. Try this exercise:
1. Choose a goal.
2. Ask yourself ‘why’ you want it and write it down.
3. Repeat until you discover the core of your motivation
Mindful listening:
Mindful listening is a powerful habit. It means paying undivided attention to others with curiosity and compassion. This habit can help you stay calm, and discover new insights, values, perspectives, and meaning. Try to build this habit of listening to others without interrupting or judging them
Joys of selfless acts: Selfless action means doing things for others without expecting anything in return. Selfless acts of kindness not only benefit others but also yourself. By giving without expectation, you can boost your happiness, and health, and discover your true calling. Make selflessness a daily habit for a more meaningful life
Express yourself creatively: It’s not just for artists or musicians. Everyone can express their creative side in different ways. Write, draw, paint, sing, dance, cook, or do anything that sparks your imagination and brings you joy. This habit will help relieve stress, boost your mood, and help you discover new aspects and meanings of yourself.
Re flect on your day: This is the most important habit. At the end of the day, take some time to review what happened and how you felt about it. Review what went well, what didn’t, what you learned, enjoyed, and what needs improvement. Gain insight into yourself and your life.”D In reality, living a meaningful life is not as hard as it sounds; you just need to practice. These habits will help you focus on the present, appreciate the small things, and connect with yourself and others. Only you can make your life meaningful, so go ahead and live it! Start today and see how your life changes for the better.

Germany falls into recession
BERLIN, MAY 25 (IANS): Germany has fallen into recession after high prices took a bigger toll on the countrys economy than originally anticipated, official data revealed on Thursday.
The data by Germany’s federal statistical office showed gross domestic product (GDP) fell by 0.3 per cent in the first quarter compared with the previous three months, which also recorded a contraction, reports the Guardian.
The revised numbers confirm that the German economy shrank for two straight quarters -- the technical definition of a recession -- following a 0.5 per cent drop in the three months to December 2022.
Initial estimates released in April had suggested that Germany had narrowly avoided a recession, merely stagnating with 0 per cent growth.

and production of a certificate of analysis issued by any of the laboratories..., with effect from June 1, 2023,” the notification stated.
On Wednesday, the country’s top drug regulator, DCGI, wrote to state drug controllers of Gujarat, Karnataka, Kerala, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Jammu and Kashmir and Uttarakhand and central laboratories and referred to the notification issued by the Ministry of Commerce and Industries regarding the export policy of cough syrups.
“State Drug Controllers are hereby requested to give instructions to your state-owned NABL accredited laboratories to analyse the samples received from the manufacturers of cough syrups for export purpose on top priority and issue the test report at the earliest,” the letter stated.
Hyderabad man slices, decapitates tenant
HYDERABAD, MAY 25
(PTI): In a brutal murder that shockingly resembled the bone chilling Shraddha Walkar case, the Hyderabad Police have nabbed a 48-year-old male stock trader for allegedly murdering his lady tenant. The accused is said to have later chopped the victim’s body parts and dumped her severed head at a garbage dump near the banks of Musi river in the city on May 17.
Police said the arrest of B Chandra Mohan on Wednesday, has helped them piece together some gory details of the murder. Primarily, he murdered his tenant Y Anuradha Reddy, aged 55, on May 12 and allegedly undertook a series of shocking acts to wipe out evidence of the murder.
After stabbing the woman to death, the accused is said to have chopped Reddy’s body
parts into six pieces using stone cutting machines.
The man preserved the legs and hands of Reddy in the victim’s refrigerator while the rest of the body was stuffed inside a suitcase in the house she was living in.
Mohan carried the decapitated head in a black polythene bag and flung it into a garbage dump near the river on May 15, police said, adding that he then planned to dispose of one body part at a time.
Anuradha Reddy, was a tenant living in the ground floor portion in the house owned by Chandra Mohan, Deputy Commissioner of Police (South East Zone) Ch Rupesh said.
Some workers of the local civic body noticed the decapitated head of the woman on May 17 and alerted the police, who then arrived at the spot.

Sood’s name was cleared in a meeting of a high-powered committee comprising Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Chief
Justice of India DY Chandrachud and Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury. Chowdhury, a Congress leader, had reportedly given a dissent note on the selection of Sood as the next director of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). Murmu urged them to recognise their talent and move ahead with confidence.
The President said that the power of women provides energy to the rural economy of the state.
“Therefore, it is very important to connect more and more women with selfhelp groups in Jharkhand and provide employment through skill development,” she said.
CHENNAI, MAY 25 (PTI): Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin on Thursday urged Union Home Minister Amit Shah to direct Gujarat-based dairy giant Amul to desist from milk procurement in the southern state with immediate effect.
Writing to Shah, Stalin drew the Centre’s attention to the issues arising out of milk procurement by the Kaira District Cooperative Milk Producers’ Union (Amul) in the Tamil Nadu milk shed area.
Recently, it has come to the state government’s notice that Amul has utilised its multi-state cooperative license to install chilling centres and a processing plant in Krishnagiri district, Stalin said.
Also, Amul has planned to procure milk through FPOs and SHGs in and around Krishnagiri,
Dharmapuri, Vellore, Ranipet, Tirupathur, Kancheepuram and Tiruvallur districts in Tamil Nadu.
“It has been a norm in India to let cooperatives thrive without infringing on each other’s milk-shed area. Such crossprocurement goes against the spirit of ‘Operation White Flood’ and will exacerbate problems for the consumers given the prevailing milk shortage scenario in the country.
This act of AMUL infringes on Aavin’s (TN Co-operative Milk Producers Federation) milk
shed area which has been nurtured in true cooperative spirit over decades.”
This move by AMUL will create unhealthy competition between cooperatives engaged in procuring and marketing milk and milk products. “Regional cooperatives have been the bedrock of dairy development in the states and they are better placed to engage and nurture producers and to cushion consumers from arbitrary price hikes.
Therefore, I request your urgent intervention to direct Amul to desist from milk procurement from the milk shed area of Aavin in Tamil Nadu with immediate effect,” the Chief Minister said. Providing a backgrounder to the matter, Stalin said till now, Amul was only selling their products in Tamil Nadu through their outlets.
Rajnath pitches for tech advancement in defence sector
NEW DELHI, MAY 25 (PTI): India must focus on advancement in defence technology in view of “double threat” along the borders, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said on Thursday in an oblique reference to challenges along the frontiers with China and Pakistan.
In an address at a conference, Singh underlined the need for extensive research to develop defence technologies for the country to meet various security challenges. “For a country like India, it becomes very important because we are facing a double threat on
our borders. In such a situation, it is very important for us to move forward in terms of technological advancement,” he said.
“Today we are one of the largest armies in the world, the bravery of our army is discussed all over the world. In such a situation, it becomes imperative that we have a technologically
advanced army to protect the interests of the country,” he added.
The defence minister’s comments came in the backdrop of the lingering border row in eastern Ladakh and Pakistan’s continuous support to crossborder terrorism. In his remarks, Singh also called for collaboration between the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and academia for ensuring desired technological advancement. “The only way for this advancement is research. It is the need of the hour that both DRDO and academia work in tan-
dem,” he said “The more this partnership grows, I think India’s research sector will also grow in the same proportion. Scientists and experts from both the DRDO and academia are sitting here,” he said.
“Although all of you will connect with each other through partnership, I want all of you to try to connect with each other at the individual and institutional level as well,” Singh added. Referring to various challenges facing the country, Singh said collective efforts and partnership are needed to confront them effectively.

FM appeals oppn to rethink on boycott
CHENNAI, MAY 25 (PTI): Asserting that power transfers never happen merely at the shake of hands, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Thursday appealed to opposition parties to reconsider their decision to boycott the dedication of the new Parliament building scheduled on May 28, saying it is a “temple of democracy.”
Addressing reporters here, she said 20 “aadeenams” (pontiffs) from Tamil Nadu have been invited for the inauguration, where the ‘Sengol’ will be installed, as did in 1947 to symbolise the power transformation from the British. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to inaugurate the new Parliament building on Sunday.
Sitharaman addressed a press conference at the Raj Bhavan here in the company of TN Governor RN Ravi, his Telangana and Nagaland counterparts, Tamilsai Soundararajan and La Ganesan, respectively, Union Minister L Murugan and TN Minister PK Sekar Babu.
The ruling DMK in Tamil Nadu, one among the 19 opposition parties in the Centre that are boycotting the inauguration, dubbed the Sengol (sceptre) a sym-

He described the deceased as a young and dedicated leader who stood tall for the welfare of the student community, adding that his commitment, passion and sacrifice for the TASU would never be forgotten.
In his demise, Paiwang said Tizit area students in particular and Konyak community in general had lost a devoted leader and the vacuum thus created would be difficult to fill.
He also conveyed heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family members and prayed and prayed for the departed soul to rest in eternal peace.

Responding to the opposition taking exception to the inauguration by PM Modi, instead of President Droupadi Murmu, Sitharaman said in a veiled attack on the Congress that its former chief Sonia Gandhi had laid the foundation stone for the Chhattisgarh assembly building instead of the Governor of that state earlier. It was strange that those who censured the President, now find themselves morally motivated, Sitharaman said.
“I am surprised by their allegation. These parties saw the President coming from a tribal background and took up a bitter campaign against her. Leaders of the opposition parties spoke ill of her and said she will be a rubber stamp and that she represents evil forces,” Sitharaman said.

KU strongly condemned the action of the alleged drug addict and peddler, who callously disregarded the value of human life, and demanded that the law enforcing agencies swiftly bring the perpetrator to justice and impose the strictest and severest punishment possible.
It warned that no individual or entity should seek bail for the accused, as it would be a direct challenge to the Konyak civil society.
KU said the incident served as a wake-up call for the entire administration and society. It implored the authorities to declare a state of war against drug users and peddlers, going to the extent of implementing a
Adivasi Cong announces protest against PM inaugurating new parl
NEW DELHI, MAY 25
The Congress lashed out at the ruling BJD and its president, Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik on Thursday for “abiding” with Prime Minister Narendra Modi on all occasions, including the new Parliament building inauguration.
The BJD hit back accusing Congress of doing politics over a non-issue and raised questions over its role during the presidential election.
Patnaik is scheduled to visit the national capital on May 27 and attend the Niti Aayog’s governing council meeting, sources in the chief minister’s office said.
There was, however, no clarity on Patnaik joining the Parliament inauguration event the next day. BJD Lok sabha and Rajya Sabha MPs will attend the function.
Odisha Congress Legislature Party leader Narasingha Mishra hit out at Patnaik for BJD’s decision to be present at the inauguration programme in Delhi on May 28 saying that the BJD president abides by whatever Modi says.
“What is more disturbing is that Patnaik, who

(PTI): The All India Adivasi Congress on Thursday accused the Modi government of “insulting” tribals by not getting the country’s first tribal president Droupadi Murmu to inaugurate the new Parliament building, as it announced a nationwide protest against the move on May 26.
Addressing a press conference at the AICC headquarters here, All India Adivasi Congress chief Shivajirao Moghe said Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurating the new Parliament building rather than the president is an “insult” to democracy.
“For the first time a tribal is the president, we have a woman president. This (inauguration by the PM) is an insult to tribals and women. The President is an important part of Parliament as it is the president that addresses the joint session of Parliament. It is the President who should inaugurate Parliament,” Moghe said.
“I don’t know whether this is happening because we are tribals,” said the chief of All India Adivasi Congress department
as well as the government was the grave menace of alcohol and drug abuse, particularly in Mon and Nagaland in general. The union said it had been KSU’s primary agenda to annihilate the scourge of drug and substance abuse in Mon district. Based on KSU’s resolution, they said inspections were carried out periodically.
However, they pointed out that as a student body, the union did not possess sufficient resources, manpower and legal support to achieve the desired goal.
They alleged that most of the measures taken by the government pertaining to drug prohibition were on paper only. Terming the incident as a wake-up call
under the Indian National Congress.
Moghe’s attack on the government came a day after 20 opposition parties announced their boycott of the inauguration of the new Parliament building by Prime Minister Modi.
Nineteen Opposition parties, including the Congress, Left, TMC, SP and AAP, came together to jointly announce the boycott, saying they find no value in a new building when the “soul of democracy has been sucked out.”
Separately, AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi said if Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla does not inaugurate the new Parliament building, his party would not attend the event.
Moghe said even when the ‘bhumi poojan’ of the new Parliament complex was done, the then President, Ram Nath Kovind, was relegated to back seat. “Both the times, Modi ji came forward to carry out inauguration.”
He alleged that the move was intended by the Modi government to insult backward classes as it is “against tribals.”

NSF: Naga Students’ Federation (NSF) also condemned the inhuman action that had cost the life of a student leader while on duty to check the menace of drug trafficking in the area. In a press release, NSF president Kegwayhun Tep said the federation was

We will peacefully protest in a democratic manner. They are using tribals for politics, we will protest against it,” Moghe said.
Earlier in the day, the Congress attacked Modi saying “one man’s ego and desire for self-promotion” has denied the first tribal woman president her constitutional privilege to inaugurate the complex. After the Opposition’s boycott call, the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance also launched a sharp counterattack, calling its stand a “blatant affront to democratic ethos and constitutional values of our great nation.”
deeply anguished at the gruesome murder of Ahoa Konyak allegedly by a drug peddler who reportedly hacked to death the victim. NSF demanded a befitting punishment to the culprit and insisted that the authority concerned immediately take all measures to curb the flow of drugs and other illegal substances that were corroding the moral of the youth and Naga society. The federation conveyed deepest condolence to the bereaved family members and expressed his solidarity with the TASU in its noble crusade against social antagonism and other antisocial elements. NSF also prayed for the soul of the departed leader to rest in eternal peace.

Cong leaders hold meetings on K’taka cabinet expansion
NEW DELHI, MAY 25
(PTI): Top Congress leaders on Thursday held discussions with Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and his deputy D K Shivakumar over expansion of the state Cabinet, sources said. Both the leaders met Congress general secretary in-charge for Karnataka Randeep Surjewala and the party’s general secretary, organisation, K C Venugopal. They then held meetings with Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge separately at his residence.
Siddaramaiah and Shivakumar along with Surjewala then held a meeting at the party’s Gurudwara Rakabganj Road office and discussed the names that could be included in the expanded Cabinet of the state. Sources said around
20 more ministers are likely to be inducted in the Karnataka Cabinet. Another round of discussions will be held before the state cabinet is finalised, they added. Shivakumar had landed in the national capital on Wednesday evening while Siddaramaiah arrived later in the night.
Siddaramaiah and Shivakumar were sworn in as Karnataka chief minister and deputy chief minister respectively along with eight cabinet ministers on May 20. However, the ministers have not yet been allocated their portfolios.
The Congress high command approved the first list of eight ministers against the earlier plan of inducting a much higher number of around 28 legislators into the cabinet.
“Kejriwal should also meet all non-BJP parties to convince them. It is our responsibility to persuade everyone - be it Congress or Biju Janata Dal (BJD),” he suggested. Describing national interest as a matter of priority, the former Union minister called for the need to have a dialogue between all non-BJP parties to provide a stable and progressive government when the time comes. Parliamentary democracy needs to be saved, Pawar said, adding that the NCP will support the AAP in this matter.
(PTI): JD(S) supremo and former Prime Minister H D Deve Gowda on Thursday said he will be attending the inauguration of the new Parliament building in New Delhi on May 28, saying it is a property of the country and built from taxpayers’ money. The JD(S) patriarch questioned whether it was the office of the BJP and RSS for boycotting its inauguration. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is slated to inaugurate the building on Sunday. “I am attending the inauguration of the new Parliament building. It is the property of the country. It is not anyone’s personal matter,” Gowda said. Speaking at the JD(S) introspection
“That magnificent building was built with the tax money of the people of the country. It belongs to the country. It is not a BJP or RSS office,” he said, adding he is participating in the inauguration of the new Parliament building as a former Prime Minister and a citizen of the country. As of now 21 opposition parties have said they will not be attending the inauguration ceremony, primarily taking exception to Modi doing the honours rather than President Droupadi Murmu. Stating that he has many reasons to oppose BJP politically, Gowda, according to an official release said, “I do not like to bring politics in the matter of opening the Parliament building.” “I have been elected to both houses of Parliament. I have performed duty there in the constitutional framework, and I still am a member (of the Rajya Sabya),” he said.

(PTI): The Congress Thursday targeted the Narendra Modi government over rolling out fortified rice under PDS and accused it of going ahead with the decision without ascertaining the outcome of independent research and the ill effects of such rice on the health of 80 crore poor people.
Congress spokesperson Pawan Khera asked what was the tearing hurry to implement the scheme of providing fortified rice containing prescribed micronutrients and “what relation does the government have with the foreign conglomerate Royal DSM” which has bagged a major contract to distribute the rice in the country
He also sought to know whether any quid pro quo was involved. A couple of days ago, the government said fortified rice was being distributed through ration shops in 439 districts and other welfare schemes so far while asserting that there is enough global evi-
Pawan Kheradence of its health benefits.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi in his Independence Day address in 2021 said the government aims to distribute fortified rice via government schemes by 2024.
Thereafter, a scheme for the distribution of fortified rice, containing prescribed micronutrients -iron, folic acid, Vitamin B12 -- was launched on October 2021 in a phased manner to address the problem of anaemia among women and children.
Congress spokesperson Khera alleged the Modi government rolled out fortified rice under the Food Security Act despite “failed”
pilot projects and multiple warnings by experts, government officials, FSSAI and Niti Aayog advisors.
He said Prime Minister Narendra Modi had on Independence Day in 2021 made the rather “unusual and unconventional” announcement about implementing the fortified rice scheme despite warnings.
Three days later, NITI Aayog officials began drawing up a plan to universalize rice fortification. But on November 29 that year, Niti Aayog’s member on Agriculture Ramesh Chand raised the concerns expressed by some medical experts about the adverse effect of iron-fortified rice on the health of children, Khera claimed.
This was also mentioned by the director general of the Indian Council for Medical Research (ICMR) who called for the need for consultation with a wide range of experts on the effect of fortification of rice on human health before pushing it further, he said.
MiG-29K fighter makes maiden night landing on INS Vikrant
NEW DELHI, MAY 25 (PTI): For the first time, the MiG-29K fighter aircraft undertook night landing on indigenously-built aircraft carrier INS Vikrant, a feat described by the Indian Navy as a “historic milestone”.
The Navy said the “challenging” night landing trial demonstrated the resolve, skill and professionalism of the crew of the INS Vikrant and the naval pilots.
The night landing of the Russianorigin MiG-29K took place on Wednesday night when the ship was sailing in the Arabian Sea. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh congratulated the Indian Navy for the successful maiden night landing trials of MiG-29K on INS Vikrant.
“Congratulations to the Indian Navy
for successfully undertaking the maiden night landing trials of MiG-29K on #INSVikrant. This remarkable achievement is a testimony to the skills, perseverance and professionalism of the Vikrant crew and Naval pilots. Kudos to them,” Singh tweeted. In a statement, the Navy said the aircraft carrier is presently undergoing “air certification and flight integration trials” with rotary wing and fixed wing aircraft for achieving a “combat ready” state at the earliest. “As part of the trials, the maiden day landing of MiG-29K and the indigenous Light Combat Aircraft (Navy) was achieved on February 6. Since then, day and night landing trials of all helicopters in the Naval inventory have progressed,” it said.

Russia signs deal to deploy tactical nuclear weapons in Belarus
TALLINN
(ESTONIA),
MAY 25 (AP): Russia and Belarus signed a deal on Thursday formalising the deployment of Moscow’s tactical nuclear weapons on the territory of its ally, although control of the weapons remains in the Kremlin.
Russian President Vladimir Putin announced the deployment of the shorter-range weapons in Belarus earlier this year in a move widely seen as a warning to the West as it stepped up military support for Ukraine.
When the weapons would be deployed wasn’t announced, but Putin has said the construction of storage facilities in Belarus for them would be completed by July 1.
Also unclear is how many nuclear weapons would be kept in Belarus. The US government believes Russia has about 2,000 tactical nuclear weapons, which include bombs that can be carried by aircraft, warheads for short-

by deploying its tactical nuclear weapons in Belarus, Russia was following the lead of the United States, noting that the US has nuclear weapons based in Belgium, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands and Turkey.
Exiled Belarusian opposition leader Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya condemned the move.
Iran unveiled on Thursday what it called the latest iteration of its liquid-fueled Khorramshahr ballistic missile amid wider tensions with the West over its nuclear program.
Authorities showed off the Khorramshahr-4 to journalists at an event in Tehran, with the missile on a truck-mounted launcher.

Tactical nuclear weapons are intended to destroy enemy troops and weapons on the battlefield.
They have a relatively short range and a much lower yield than nuclear warheads fitted to longrange strategic missiles that are capable of obliterating whole cities.
The signing of the deal came as Russia braces for Ukraine’s much-anticipated counteroffensive. Both Russian and Belarusian officials also framed the step as driven by hostility from
the West.
“Deployment of nonstrategic nuclear weapons is an effective response to the aggressive policy of countries unfriendly to us,”
Belarusian Defence Minister Viktor Khrenin said in Minsk at a meeting with his Russian counterpart, Sergei Shoigu.
“In the context of an extremely sharp escalation of threats on the western borders of Russia and Belarus, a decision was made to take countermeasures in the military-nuclear sphere,” Shoigu added. Putin has argued that

ISLAMABAD, MAY 25
(PTI): Former prime minister Imran Khan, his wife Bushra Bibi and more than 600 leaders and former assembly members of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf party have been barred from leaving the country, media reports said on Thursday.
Khan and several top leaders of his party are facing cases following the violence after he was arrested on May 9 in a corruption case.
Citing sources within the Federal Investigation Authority (FIA), the Geo News reported that the names of the PTI leaders and its party chief have been added for their involvement in the May 9 violence and desecration of martyrs’ monuments.
However, there was no official confirmation on the development from Khan’s party. The names have been added to the FIA’s Provincial National Identification List (PNIL) to prevent them from going abroad, the sources said.
The sources claimed that some of the PTI leaders and office bearers tried leaving the country in the last three days, however, they were stopped at the airports.
The list includes Murad Saeed, Maleeka Bokhari, Fawad Chaudhry, Hammad Azhar, Qasim Suri, Asad Qaiser, Yasmin Rashid and Mian Aslam Iqbal. Fawad Chaudhry has
already quit the party but his name has been listed among those who cannot fly out of Pakistan.
Earlier, Samaa News channel reported that the federal government has decided to add the names of 80 people, including Khan and his wife, to the no-fly list.
The names of all the PTI leaders were put in the list on the recommendation of the “institutions concerned”, the news channel reported.
It said that the police department, National Accountability Bureau and the anti-corruption department had requested the Ministry of Interior to include these names to the no-fly list.
The no-fly list is maintained by the Ministry of Interior and officials deployed at airports or other land exit routes are provided the names of individuals who cannot go out.
Pakistan authorities maintain different categories of people who are banned from leaving the country for various reasons, including those who face corruption cases.
But these lists had been used in the past by the governments to muzzle the opposition.

“We must do everything to prevent Putin’s plan to deploy nuclear weapons in Belarus, as this will ensure Russia’s control over Belarus for years to come,” Tsikhanouskaya told The Associated Press.
“This will further jeopardise the security of Ukraine and all of Europe.”
Independent Belarusian military analyst Aliaksandr Alesin said about twothirds of Russia’s arsenal of medium-range nucleartipped missiles were held in Belarus during the Cold War, adding that there are dozens of Soviet-era storage facilities that could still be used.
Defense Minister Gen. Mohammad Reza Ashtiani said the missile could be prepared for launch in a short period.
“One of the prominent characteristics of this missile is its ability to evade radar detection and penetrate enemy air defense systems, thanks to its low radar signature,” the general told journalists. “This missile has the capability to utilize various warheads for different missions.”
Iranian officials described the missile as having a 2,000-kilometer (1,240mile) range with a 1,500-kilogram (3,300-pound) warhead. They also released undated video footage pur-

Iran’s ballistic missile fleet, which analysts say may be designed to keep the weapon under a 2,000-kilometer range limit imposed by the country’s supreme leader. That puts most of the Mideast in range, but falls short of Western Europe. The Khorramshahr-4 is named after an Iranian city that was the scene of heavy fighting during the IranIraq War in the 1980s. LYSOHIRKA (UKRAINE), MAY 25 (AP): The rising waters came as a relief at first, for both the tiny community living on the islands in the southern Kakhovka Reservoir and for everyone who had feared the low levels risked a meltdown at the nearby Russian-occupied nuclear power plant. Since mid-February, the water level in the reservoir has steadily increased, according to data from Theia, a French geospatial
analytical organisation. An Associated Press analysis of satellite imagery showed the water has now risen so high that it’s washing over the top of the damaged Russian-occupied dam downstream.
The waves first covered the natural shoreline, then submerged the marsh grasses. Next they came for Lyudmila Kulachok’s garden, then Ihor Medyunov’s guest room. The wild boars fled for higher ground, replaced by water fowl.

Ukraine controls five of the six dams along the Dnipro River, which runs from its northern border with Belarus down to the Black Sea and is crucial for the entire country’s drinking water and power supply. The last dam — the one furthest downstream in the Kherson region — is controlled by Russian forces.
Most of Ukraine’s snowmelt and the runoff from rainy spring days winds up here, in the Kakhovka Reservoir, said David Helms, a retired me -
teorologist who has been monitoring the reservoir levels during the war. Russian forces destroyed the Nova Kakhovka road and bridge deck last November, damaging some of the sluice gates, even though they kept control of that sliver of the Kherson region during the Ukrainian counteroffensive. Now, either deliberately or through neglect, the flow through the dam is not adjusting to the river’s seasonal flow. River dams work as systems. The idea is to manage the flow to provide constant water levels — for shipping, for flood control to property, and to ensure enough water for intake pipes for drinking and irrigation, Helms said.

S. Korea, US troops hold large livefire drills near border with N. Korea
SEOUL, MAY 25 (AP):
The South Korean and U.S. militaries conducted large live-fire drills near the border with North Korea on Thursday, despite the North’s warning that it won’t tolerate what it calls an invasion rehearsal on its doorstep.
The drills, the first of five rounds of live-fire exercises through mid-June, mark 70 years since the establishment of the military alliance between Seoul and Washington. North Korea typically reacts to such major South Korean-U.S. exercises with missile and other weapons tests.
Since the start of 2022, North Korea has testlaunched more than 100 missiles, but none since it fired a solid-fuel intercontinental ballistic missile in

Rock ‘N’ Roll Legend, ‘Private Dancer’ hitmaker Tina Turner dies at 83
Soulful diva Tina Turner, who had a lengthy run of ‘60s and ‘70s R&B hits and struck major pop stardom in the ‘80s, died on Wednesday in Switzerland, reports ‘Variety’. She was 83.
“Tina Turner, the ‘Queen of Rock ‘n’ Roll’ has died peacefully today at the age of 83 after a long illness in her home in Kusnacht near Zurich, Switzerland.
With her, the world loses a music legend and a role model,” her representative said in a statement to ‘Variety’.
More than a decade after her crossover hit ‘Proud Mary’ with husband Ike, Tina Turner ascended to the pinnacle of pop fame with the 1984 Capitol Records album ‘Private Dancer’. The collection, which spawned a trio of top-10 pop hits, sold five million copies and garnered four Grammy Awards, adds ‘Variety’. Though she never matched that breakthrough solo success, she recorded and toured profitably until her retirement in 2000.
Raw-voiced, leggy, peripatetic and provocative onstage, writes ‘Variety’, the magnetic Turner, born Anna Mae Bullock in the farming community Nutbush, Tennessee, segued effortlessly into big screen roles.
She appeared as the Acid Queen in Ken Russell’s 1975 adaptation of the Who’s rock opera ‘Tommy’ and as villainess Aunty Entity in George Miller’s action sequel ‘Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome’. She sang the title song, penned by Bono and the Edge of U2, for the 1995 James Bond pic ‘GoldenEye’.
The winner of eight Grammys, Turner was a 1991 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee, and was recognised at the 2005 Kennedy Center Honors for her
career achievements, adds Variety. Turner was still in her
teens when she began recording with future husband Ike Turner; their tumultuous partnership produced 15 years of popular singles, culminating in the 1971 crossover smash ‘Proud Mary’. In 1976, the vocalist fled her abusive marriage and she detailed her violencescarred relationship in the 1986 bestseller ‘I, Tina’, which served as the basis for the 1993 biopic ‘What’s

In 1993, according to ‘Variety’, Turner scored her final U.S. top 10 hit with ‘I Don’t Wanna Fight’, a song recorded for the top-20 soundtrack of the biopic ‘What’s Love Got to Do With It’. Director Brian Gibson’s feature starred Laurence Fishburne and Angela Bassett, who both
received Oscar nods for their work as Ike and Tina. Even more than Turner’s autobiography, upon which it was loosely based, the film focused further attention on the issues of spousal abuse and domestic violence. Ike Turner, who maintained in interviews as well as in his autobiography that the charges of abuse

Lautaro Martinez scores 2 as Inter beats Fiorentina 2-1 for Italian Cup title
ROME, MAY 25 (AP):
Take note, Manchester City: the bigger the match, the bigger the performance from Lautaro Martinez lately.
After scoring key goals against Benfica and city rival AC Milan to help secure Inter Milan a spot in the Champions League final, Martinez netted twice as the Nerazzurri produced a 2-1 comeback win over Fiorentina to defend the Italian Cup trophy on Wednesday.
It’s the second trophy that Inter has won this season after also beating Milan in the Italian Super Cup in January — when Martinez also scored.
After a couple of matches to finish up Serie A,
Martinez and Inter will be aiming for one more trophy when they face City in the Champions League final on June 10 in Istanbul.
“In all honesty, I am moved, because for a couple of years we have been bringing trophies to this great club and we’ve got to continue this way,” said Martinez, who also played a big role when Inter won Serie A in 2021.
“I want to keep contributing for Inter, because that’s what matters.”
Martinez now has a career-best 27 goals across all competitions for Inter this season, having also helped Argentina win the World Cup in December. He’s also the only player to
have appeared in all 54 of Inter’s matches this season.
The match at the Stadio Olimpico was lively from the start as Nicolas Gonzalez put Fiorentina ahead three minutes in following a lapse by Inter’s defense. A cross from Jonathan Ikone was allowed to float across the area for Gonzalez to knock in at the far post.
Then Martinez took over to put Inter ahead before the break.
First, a perfectly placed through ball from Marcelo Brozovic set up the equalizer as Martinez ran onto the pass and scored with an angled shot into the far corner for his 100th goal

a different result but this will serve as experience and preparation for what to expect on a mental level and how to handle the match for the Conference League final,” Fiorentina coach Vincenzo Italiano said. Final call on Asia Cup venue to be taken after IPL final: Jay Shah
NEW DELHI, MAY 25
(PTI): A decision on Asia Cup’s fate will be taken on the sidelines of the IPL final, which will be attended by a host of top Asian Cricket Council (ACC) dignitaries, Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) secretary Jay Shah said on Thursday.
Pakistan have the hosting rights for this year’s Asia Cup but with Board of Control for Cricket in India deciding against sending its team to the neighbouring country without government permission, PCB chairman Najam Sethi had proposed a ‘hybrid model’ where they will organise at least four games on home soil and India will play their matches at a neutral venue.
It couldn’t be confirmed whether Sethi has been formally invited for the IPL final.
Rodrygo scores late as Real Madrid beats Rayo amid tributes to Vinícius Jr
tion although ACC had made no formal statements.
According to the model, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Nepal and Afghanistan play four preliminary matches in Pakistan and India would play all their games at neutral venues, The two India-Pakistan games will also be held in Sri Lanka although the PCB wants them in Dubai.
The weather in UAE in September is not at all conducive for 50- over games although to make the ‘hybrid model’ work logistically, UAE is a far better option for the Asian Cricket Council.
“Asian Cricket Council head Jay Shah will summon an executive body meeting where a formal announcement will take place. The PCB doesn’t mind playing India at a neutral venue.

It has been learnt from ACC sources that Sethi’s proposed hybrid model looks like a feasible solu-
“PCB would prefer Dubai because it would lead to more gate receipts but it is open to playing in another country (read Sri Lanka) provided the Asian Cricket Council matches the gate receipts amount (USD 0.5 million) that Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) received in 2022 from the Indo-Pak games in Dubai,” an ACC source privy to development told PTI on conditions of anonymity.

Madrid defeated Rayo Vallecano 2-1 in a Spanish league match marked by tributes to Madrid forward Vinícius Júnior.
It was Madrid’s first game since the latest case of racial abuse against Vinícius, who considered leaving the field Sunday after being insulted by Valencia fans.
Rodrygo celebrated on Wednesday by raising his right fist above his head in a stance against racism. He dedicated the goal to his Brazil teammate. “We’ve gone through
“We came to this great club and won everything, and it’s very sad to have to go through this situation.
I wanted to salute Vini, he knows that I’m always by his side. We will keep fighting against racism.”
Madrid’s players came to the field wearing Vinícius’ No. 20 jersey, and a huge banner was displayed behind one of the goals with the words “We are all Vinicius. Enough is enough.”
Vinicius did not play because of a minor knee problem. Wearing street
Karim Benzema opened the scoring at the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium in the 31st, with the visitors equalizing with Raúl de Tomás in the 84th.
The victory moved Madrid to second place ahead of Atletico Madrid, which drew 3-3 at Espanyol. Madrid hadn’t won in two matches in all competitions, having been eliminated by Manchester City in the semifinals of the Champions League. Rayo, which has lost three in a row, stayed in 11th place.
4 people accused of hanging Vinícius Júnior effigy released from custody
MADRID, MAY 25 (AP): Four people accused of hanging an effigy of Real Madrid player Vinícius Júnior off a highway bridge were released from custody Thursday while still under investigation for perpetrating a hate crime.
A Spanish judge prohibited the four people from attempting to communicate with Vinícius.
They also have a temporary restraining order banning them from a 1-kilometer (0.62-mile) area around Madrid’s stadium and training facilities and from coming within the same distance of any soccer sta-
dium between four hours before and four hours after a Spanish league game. The court statement
said the four people are also being investigated for trying to damage the moral integrity of Viní -
cius. It added that the four opted not to answer the judge’s questions in their first court appearance, in line with their constitutional rights.
The incident of the effigy occurred on Jan. 26 in the buildup to a derby match between Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid.
But it wasn’t until Tuesday when police made the arrests amid a public uproar that has engulfed Spain following the latest episode of racial abuse being targeted at Vinícius.
Police on Tuesday also detained three people accused of verbally abus-
ing Vinícius with racist slurs during a match on Saturday in Valencia at Mestalla Stadium, which will have parts of stands closed for the next five games. Those three were also released from custody.
The 22-year-old Vinícius, who is Black, has been subjected to repeated racist taunts since he arrived in Spain five years ago from his native Brazil. In Spain, hate crimes are typically punished with one-to-four years of prison time, while crimes against a person’s moral integrity are punished with six-to-24 months behind bars.
U-20 Football WC: Colombia beat Japan 2-1, seal last-16 spot
LA PLATA (ARGENTINA), MAY 25 (IANS): Colombia came from a goal down and weathered an avalanche of Japanese chances late on at La Plata Stadium to win 2-1 in the Group C match and sealed their spot in the round of 16 of the FIFA U20 World Cup.
Japan broke the deadlock in the 30th minute from a corner-kick routine straight off the training ground. After a neat exchange of passes with Sota Kitano, Taichi Fukui cut back a pass for Riku Yamane, who found the bottom corner.
The second half, however, was all about Colombia. Yaser Asprilla and substitute Tomas Angel had Colombia in front within the first 15 minutes of the restart with two close-range finishes at the end of patient build-up play.
The match ended dra-
matically with Japan captain Kuryu Matsuki hitting the crossbar on two occasions. The first was from the penalty spot after the Samurai Blue were awarded a spotkick following an on-pitch VAR review by referee Jose Maria Sanchez Martinez, and the second was from a
glancing header. Japan was left ruing their missed chances as they now face a crucial Group C decider against Israel on May 27, while Colombia celebrated their progression to a second straight knockout stage at the U-20 World Cup.
