Shah confident NE will be free from agitation, militancy by 2024
GUWAHATI, JUL 25 ( AG E N C I E S ) : U n i o n Home minister Amit Shah on Sunday said the North Eastern region will be free from protests and militancy by 2024, exuding confidence in efforts by the Modi government to translate accords into deeds, reports the Times of India. He said it was the Modi government which has attempted to implement the Assam Accord in true spirit ever since its signing in 1985. “Under the leadership of the Prime Minister, the BJP-led government has changed the narrative in Assam, which stated protest was required for development. For development, cooperation and hardwork are essential,” he said at a government programme here in Guwahati on Sunday. “The weight of dust was becoming heavier than the accords. It’s not the Congress but Modiji, who

opened the Assam Accord again after 1985,” he said, adding that the credibility of deals done with Northeast organisations was waning. He said starting from the third Bodo Accord to the pact signed with the Bru refugees, the government has fulfilled most of the clauses within a short span. During the tenure of the Modi government, he said, 90 per cent of the conditions of the Bodo agreement have been delivered. “According to the Bru Accord, land allotment in nine out 14 places is complete. After 35 years, 35,000 Bru
families will get land to live on by 2022, will get food to eat, Rs 4,500 pension and dignity as Indian citizens,” Shah added. He said as an outcome of various peace deals, over 2,100 cadres of various outfits in the North East have laid down arms with the efforts of the BJP-led governments. “Formalities of the agreement with the Karbis is about to be finalised. Two armed groups in Tripura have also laid down arms. There have been numerous irritating elements in the North East which were hampering permanent peace,” Shah said. “Blockades in Manipur, which were frequent earlier, have ended during the BJP government’s rule in the state,” he added. Shah said the importance of the Northeast for the Modi government has been reflected with the inclusion of five ministers from the region in the Union

council of ministers. “For the first time, five ministers from the Northeast have taken oath at the Centre. This had never happened since Independence,” he said. Shah also laid the foundation stone of the Tamulpur Medical College and Hospital in Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR), which chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma termed a vital gift of the recent Bodo Accord. Shah also launched distribution of Rs 1 lakh financial aid to the families of those who died of Covid in Assam under the “Prarthana” scheme, which was proposed in the state budget presented this month. Earlier, he inaugurated the radio therapy block of the State Cancer Institute at GMCH and also dedicated a newly installed state-ofthe-art linear accelerator machine at the centre to the people of the state, which is the sixth of its kind in the country.
NPP slams NPF’s decision to back ruling coalition DIMAPUR, JUL 25 (NPN): National People’s Party (NPP) Nagaland unit has expressed astonishment at the decision of the NPF legislature to support the ruling PDA coalition in Nagaland. NPP has also strongly criticised the proposal of the NPF legislature for an opposition-less and all-party government under the pretext of Naga peace process which as explained by NPF general secretary Achumbemo Kikon. NPP questioned NPF as to why there had been no such outcome when it ruled Nagaland (from 2003 to 2018) and when there was no opposition (from 2015) and now suddenly “citing the concern” over Naga political issue? NPP opined that if there is to be a solution then first, the entire elected members “should resign to pave way for the smooth transition of power”. NPP said this should be done instead of coming together of political parties as one entity just to claim they are unifying for the Naga (Cont’d on p-8)

DIMAPUR, JUL 25 (NPN): Aboi District Demand Committee (ADDC) has urged the State government to declare Aboi as a district on August 15. Aboi currently falls under Mon district. Addressing a press conference at Hotel Acacia here on Sunday, committee’s convener Manpon Chang-

kap said they had on numerous occasions apprised the government of the demand for district headquarters at Aboi. He claimed that the committee’s demand for Aboi as separate district had started in 2008 and the issue was discussed by the State cabinet on November 28, 2011, along with Noklak, for which also there was a demand for separate district.
He pointed out that while Noklak was declared a separate district subsequently, similar demand for Aboi was ignored even though Noklak had only two Assembly constituencies (ACs), while Aboi had four. He clarified that he was not comparing, but merely pointed out the fact. Mentioning that the primary reason for the demand to make Aboi separate district was for administrative convenience and economic development, Changkap claimed that during the last meeting in January, chief minister Neiphiu Rio had responded positively to their demands and acknowledged their problems. Central BJP leadership may give nod to all-party govt if ministry not disturbed Correspondent
KOHIMA, JUL 25 (NPN): BJP central leadership may not have issues with an allparty government in the State if the present ministry was not disturbed. Sources informed Nagaland Post that the party’s central leadership might give its nod to the new political arrangement on the condition that the present ministry was not disturbed. Few State BJP legislators are currently in New Delhi while some are reportedly scheduled to join them for a meeting with party’s central leadership slated this week. While some ministers in the PDA government had earlier indicated the same, chief minister Neiphiu Rio
too hinted that the present ministry would continue even as an all-party government was formed. Rio had also asserted that the proposed all-party government would send out a message for unity on the Naga political issue whose solution was now in an advanced stage. NPF legislators had clarified that their party agreed for an opposition-less government without putting any condition as this was for Naga political issue. Nagaland chief minister Neiphiu Rio on Saturday said that his party (NDPP) welcomes the offer of the NPF, but the matter was still under consultation with its ally- the BJP. “We welcome their statement but, we are yet to
discuss it because I am away for this meeting (in Shillong). The discussion will be held after I go back,” Rio said this to The Northeast Today (TNT) in Shillong after attending the meeting of the North East chief ministers, chaired by Union Home Minister Amit Shah. “Right now, we are consulting with our ally BJP and, when we get back, we will talk,” he added. NPF Legislature Party (NPFLP), which had on July 19, unanimously resolved to endorse “the concept of an Opposition-less government with PDA in the larger interest of the Naga people” also authorised the leader of opposition TR. Zeliang to workout necessary formalities with chief minister Neiphiu Rio.

PM must clarify whether snooping was done: Chidambaram NEW DELHI, JUL 25 (PTI): Senior Congress leader P Chidambaram Sunday said the government should either call for a joint parliamentary committee (JPC) probe into the Pegasus snooping allegations or request the Supreme Court to appoint a sitting judge to investigate the matter, and demanded that Prime Minister Narendra Modi make a statement in Parliament clarifying whether there had been surveillance or not. In an interview with PTI, Chidambaram also said a probe by JPC can be more effective than an investigation by Parliamentary Standing Committee on IT, asserting that the former would be more empowered by Parliament. “If Pegasus spyware was used, who acquired it? Was it acquired by the
government or by one of its agencies,” he asked. He also asked the government to come clean on the amount paid to acquire the spyware. “...France has ordered an investigation when it was revealed that President (Emmanuel) Macron’s number was one of the numbers that were hacked. Israel itself has ordered an investigation by its National Security Council,” he said . If two major countries can order investigation, why should India not order a probe”, he asked rhetorically.

‘World’s largest family’ in Mizoram HM promised to look into demand for ILP: Meghalaya minister reports massive COVID-19 outbreak
File photo of late Ziona Chana with his family. AIZAWL, JUL 25 (AGENCIES): A massive COVID-19 test was conducted at Chhuanthar Run, the residence of the world’s largest family of Ziona Chana in Baktawng, where over 2,000 people live together. Till Friday, from 2,224 inhabitants of Chhunthar Tlangnuam village, who are said to be followers of Ziona Chana, a religious sect that practices polygamy, a total of 1,255 samples were tested, out of which as many as 80 were found positive. Among the 80 positive inhabitants, 80 are immediate family members of late Ziona, reports Inside NE.
As per reports, over 240 members of the community are believed to be infected with the virus. Members of the sect in the village are very closeknit as they are bonded over blood relations and religious beliefs which makes them more vulnerable to the contagious COVID-19 virus. Mass testing was done after it was found that during the last 7 days, 163 people from the area tested positive for Covid-19. On July 15, 3 people tested positive for Covid-19; on July 16, a total of 16 people tested positive while on July 17, 24 people tested
Huge Covid biowaste in one year took toll on ecology in NE
GUWAHATI, JUL 25 (AGENCIES): Covid-19 has taken its toll on the environment in the northeast with an increase in biomedical waste in the region and with little scope for proper scientific disposal, a Times of India report stated. As per a government reply tabled in the Lok Sabha on Friday, Assam alone generated 337.4 ton of Covid-19 infected waste between June-2020 to June-2021. This mammoth biomedical waste is more voluminous if the Covid infected biomedical waste produced by six other northeastern states (254.4 ton) during the period is taken into account. Even as lack of a Common Biomedical Waste Treatment Facility (CBWTF) for disposal of such waste has emerged as a major issue in the North East with only one CBWTF in Assam, these huge quantities of waste may be a threat to public health during the monsoon floods. Underground burial is the preferred option in most parts of the state which lacks CBWTF. As per Central Pollution Control Board guidelines, such burials must be performed under close and dedicated supervision and it must be ensured that no contamination occurs to surface water or ground-
water. However, lack of manpower with the pollution board to monitor the situation raises a question over burials during Covid times, said officials in the forest and environment department. Organizations involved in the biomedical waste management feel that if important towns and cities in the region are not brought under the ambit of CBWTF, there can be a disastrous impact on public health if another deadlier and prolonged wave of Covid-19 hits the country. The NE states are still struggling to bring down the case numbers even when the worst Covid-hit states have significantly recovered. The only CBWTF of Assam is operating in Panikhaiti, on the outskirts of Guwahati, run by Fresh Air Waste Management Services Pvt. Ltd. But the area under its jurisdiction is currently about 150 km radius, covering some parts of lower and central Assam districts. Fresh Air director Partha Pratim Pathak, who is also an executive member of eastern zone of All India CBWTF association, said “People are trying to build a common biomedical waste treatment facility in NE but the biggest hurdle is viability.
positive for Covid-19. From July 18 to 22, a total of 121 people tested positive for Covid 19. There are 8 areas within the residence of Chhuanthar Run: Central East, Central West, Central East I, Central East II, Central East A, Central South East, Central South West, Central Road. The head of the family/religious sect, Zion Chana died on June 13, 2021. He left behind 38 wives, 89 children, and 36 grandchildren, making him the Guinness World Record Holder of the “World Largest Family.”
me a patient hearing when I raised this issue. He said that he would look into the matter and get back,” the rural development minister told PTI. Shah, who was in Shillong on a two-day visit, inaugurated several projects during the weekend, besides holding separate meetings with cabinet ministers and other stakeholders. He also chaired a meeting of chief ministers of northeast states. Dohling, however, pointed out that Shah hasn’t made any promise. “We hope the Centre considers our demand for ILP keeping in mind the interest of Meghalaya people. This is the only government which
has given us the chance to raise the issue... We have already explained why we need the ILP regime, and hopefully the home minister will come up with a positive response,” he added. Inner Line Permit (ILP) is an official document issued by a state government to allow inward travel of an Indian citizen into a protected area for a limited period. It is perceived as a shield against entry of illegal immigrants. Currently, the ILP regime is in place in Nagaland, Arunachal Pradesh and Mizoram and Manipur. Meghalaya has stepped up its demand for ILP after protests against Citizenship

NEW DELHI, JUL 25 (AGENCIES): With an eye on 2024 Lok Sabha elections, West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee will meet with the leaders of opposition over the next three days from July 26 during her Delhi visit, reports News 18. But her likely meeting with Congress president Sonia Gandhi is what is gaining traction. Despite Trinamool Congress and Congress having frosty ties, Mamata had called up Sonia to inquire about her health, which magnifies the extent of their relationship unlike with Rahul Gandhi, who Mamata has been openly critical of. In private, Mamata was often heard saying that it was former prime minister Rajiv Gandhi who had shaped her political career. When Rajiv Gandhi had noticed an angry Mamata, who had accused many Congress leaders of attacking her, he suggested that she contest against Left leader Somnath Chatterjee. Mamata’s win marked the political significance in Bengal as it ended the 34-year-long Left rule in the state. Interestingly, Congress took to Twitter on Sunday and said “PM Modi took the adage, ‘keep your enemies closer a little too far’” as it detailed the

groundwork for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections thus hinting at a bigger role in the opposition after her massive victory in Bengal assembly polls. Even in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, Mamata had tried to bring the warring opposition leaders together but failed. The Brigade Ground rally ahead of 2014 General Elections couldn’t take off as Congress leaders didn’t see Mamata as a powerful leader, hence they didn’t turn up. But this time Mamata comes with hope. With most opposition heavyweights such as TDP’s Chandrababu Naidu down and out and Congress facing an identity crisis within, Mamata is now being looked up to as someone who could take on the might of Modi. Mamata is also expected to meet the PM Modi July 27 for the first time since the state polls where she will bring up Covid management and vaccination issues. She is also likely to seek more funds for West Bengal amid the Covid situation.

NEW DELHI, JUL 25 (PTI): Human rights and democracy are universal and extend beyond a particular national or cultural perspective, government sources here said on Sunday, a day after the US said that Secretary of State Antony Blinken will raise the issues during his upcoming visit to India. As a long-standing pluralistic society, India is open to engaging those who “now recognise” the value of diversity, the sources said. “Issues such as human rights and democracy are universal and extend beyond a particular national or cultural perspective. India is proud of its achievements in both domains and is always glad to share experiences,” said a source. Blinken is scheduled to arrive in India on Tuesday

A
s Nagaland remains under threat from coronavirus, herd immunity through vaccination as the only thinkable option against prevention of spread and casualties due to covid, has turned into a heated debate. The issue of vaccination comes against the backdrop of a notification issued by the chief secretary to all heads of departments informing them to not release salaries of employees if they fail to produce test reports of 15 days and also on mandatory vaccination. Several organizations have criticized the notification on the plea that fifteen-day test report as a regular requirement was impracticable as well adding extra expenditure on employees for tests. Reacting to the notification, newly formed Rising People’s Party (RPP) opined there were other ways through which the issue could be addressed instead of “ordering” lakhs of government employees to test and pay every fifteen days. Naga People’s Front (NPF) maintained that vaccination was voluntary and which was also upheld by the Supreme Court besides being validated by the union ministry of health and family welfare. It said even the high courts of Mizoram and Meghalaya have reiterated that vaccination is voluntary and individuals cannot be forced or compelled by the authorities to take vaccination. Even the state unit of the National People’s Party (NPP) has opposed the notification for vaccination. The covid-19 pandemic sweeping across the world is probably among the biggest threat on the life and well being of people. The virus continues to mutate and turn more aggressive and fatal by the months. Till date the virus has infected 19,46,59,447 people across the world and caused the deaths of 41,72,142. In India, a total of 3.14 crore were infected while the death toll till date is 4.21 lakh. The second wave of covid-19 in 2021 has spread in a faster and more aggressive way, unlike the first wave of 2020. It may be noted that by beginning of 2021 the world already had vaccines against the virus. Despite vaccines, a majority of people across the world including India, are unwilling to receive vaccinations due to various reasons. The virus can only be stopped if herd immunity is achieved- when at least 60 % to 70 % of people have either been infected and recovered or have been vaccinated. Testing has been low in north eastern states including Nagaland where the positivity rate is around 10% whereas the national average is around 2.4%. Testing and vaccination are two weapons against the coronavirus. Both are considered very crucial since untested and unvaccinated individuals are the weak links or chinks in the armor against covid-19. Those who oppose vaccination stand on weak premises that vaccines can cause potential harm at later stages instead of being beneficial at all. They also argue that it normally takes anywhere from 10 to 15 years to develop a proper vaccine after doing all tests, observations and efficacy. The vaccine for covid was however prepared within a year and so it has not passed the crucial tests, they say. Further, they also argue that the covid vaccines don’t prevent the disease but only reduce the severity. One may argue endlessly to refuse vaccination as a fundamental right even if it invites infection and pose threats on others. Even if democracy provides the right, yet this right cannot override the safety and security of all other people.
DailyDevotion Am I Blessed Like This? Blessed are… —Matthew 5:3-11 When we first read the statements of Jesus, they seem wonderfully simple and unstartling, and they sink unnoticed into our subconscious minds. For instance, the Beatitudes initially seem to be merely soothing and beautiful precepts for overly spiritual and seemingly useless people, but of very little practical use in the rigid, fast-paced workdays of the world in which we live. We soon find, however, that the Beatitudes contain the “dynamite” of the Holy Spirit. And they “explode” when the circumstances of our lives cause them to do so. When the Holy Spirit brings to our remembrance one of the Beatitudes, we say, “What a startling statement that is!” Then we must decide whether or not we will accept the tremendous spiritual upheaval that will be produced in our circumstances if we obey His words. That is the way the Spirit of God works. We do not need to be born again to apply the Sermon on the Mount literally. The literal interpretation of the Sermon on the Mount is as easy as child’s play. But the interpretation by the Spirit of God as He applies our Lord’s statements to our circumstances is the strict and difficult work of a saint. The teachings of Jesus are all out of proportion when compared to our natural way of looking at things, and they come to us initially with astonishing discomfort. We gradually have to conform our walk and conversation to the precepts of Jesus Christ as the Holy Spirit applies them to our circumstances. The Sermon on the Mount is not a set of rules and regulations— it is a picture of the life we will live when the Holy Spirit is having His unhindered way with us.

30 years of unfulfilled dream, The reform yet to happen
T
hirty years and India is waiting for the dream to turn real. The liberalization of economy in 1991is erroneously construed as divesting of government holding of industry and assets. Liberalisation was not a willful decision but corollary as major lenders, IMF and World Bank, put a stop to their funding without a firm commitment to “reforms”. The country went through a foreign exchange crisis in late 1980s and 1990s. Family jewel had to be pawned since forex reserves plunged to a level that the country could finance only about 15 days’ of imports. To strive off the immediate crisis, In July 1991, the RBI pledged 46.91 tonnes of gold with Bank of England and Bank of Japan to raise $ 400 million to meet international obligations. The process of the new PV Narasimha Rao government followed a breakdown in January 1991, when the Chandra Shekhar government convinced IMF to approve two loans of $ 775 million and $ 1.02 billion under contingency and financing facility. The reforms that meant losing government assets to
the private sector, started with a “bang” instead of putting the private sector at par with government. The reforms initiated by the then finance minister Manmohan Singh, were not a roaring success but a piece of confusing policy that has put the subsequent governments in a quagmire. While liberalizing the society from licence-permit raj was welcomed but the processes were gradually complicated. Changes were made in industrial policy, monopolies law was annulled, import licensing abolished, India joins WTO, TRIPS, quantitative restrictions on import of manufactured goods and farm products removed and current account convertibility introduced easing the business process and the GST. But disinvestment of public assets became the cynosure. Every government took pride in selling assets or be seen to do that. Still private sector is suspect in the eyes of the bureaucracy in any field. They are not seen as compatriots but officials continue to try controlling the private. It is still a mystery why partial opening up was considered revolutionary. India is still not free of socialist
mindset and a preference for government control for “concern of people’s welfare”. The “reforms” worked a bit. Poverty ratio in two decades came down officially from 45.3 percent of the population to 21.9 percent. But the pandemic has impoverished 80 crore people subsisting on government dole of food grains. Large number of people thrown out of jobs due to lockdown has pushed the middle class Shivaji to the edge of poverty. This is reflected in slow growth of Indian GDP from $ 266 billion in 1991 to a modest rise of $ 2.3 trillion, about nine times. But at the end of 2021-22, the GDP would still be the same as Rs 146 trillion (Rs 146 lakh crore). In 202021, India’s economic growth slowed and contracted by 7.3 percent, the NCAER says. Singh says 1991 was acute. The year 2021 is more acute. Population has risen from 88 crore to 138 crore. The problems also have grown and the country does not find it easy to manage. So it pops up move for population control and does not learn lessons from Chinese failures.
The 1991 liberalisation, the nation forgets, was followed by series of Rs 7 lakh core scams – Harshad Mehta to Ketan Parekh, UTI, LIC (about Rs 2 lakh crore) and a series of banks leading to a JPC probe. The top major scams are coal allocation (Rs 1.86 trillion), 2G spectrum (Rs 1.76 lakh crore, Waqf Board land (Rs 1.5 lakh crore), Commonwealth Games (Rs 70,000 crore), Telgi stamp Sarkar (Rs 20,000 crore), Satyam (Rs 14,000 crore), Hawala scandal (Rs 100 crore). Scams of such magnitude had never happened since Independence. Each divestment deals were also questioned including the innocuous Centaur hotel. While the large private houses acquired these assets with loans from public sector banks, it also opened up an era of high bank losses (NPAs) particularly since the European Lehman meltdown in 2007-08. The RBI Financial Stability Report (FSR) says despite banks writing off Rs 23786 crore loans in 2019-20, enabling the PSU banks to show lower NPAs, banks could go into a severe stress as it fears NPA may
escalate to 16.2 percent by September 2021 as borrowers are saddled with unpaid dues. The asset quality of banking can deteriorate sharply. Repeated reorganization and mergers of banks have not boosted confidence. Now the move to sell four major banks and LIC are not being seen as happy events. Many buyers might be from the list of 50 major defaulters. Since 1991, government assets worth Rs 3.63 lakh were divested. During 201419, Rs 2.79 lakh crore were disinvested. The target set for 2020-21 is Rs 2.1 lakh crore. Interestingly enough all the money received is adjusted in budgetary expenditure and not known to have been used for building assets. A contrast happened in 1950s to 70s when the nation took pride in creating assets. The state governments have also done many disinvestments. But despite that country has made certain progress in digital economy though cyber crimes are also on the rise. The home ministry data in Parliament reveal about 1.16 million cyber attacks in 2020 over 20 times rise since 2016. There were 53,117 cases of cyber
attack in 2017. Liberal and digital economy shook the economy with demonetisation in 2016. The cash flow has been severely hit. It has affected sales of goods and commodities as people’s purchasing power collapses delaying the postpandemic industrial, real estate and market recovery. A scared government is spending less in favour of direct cash benefit. It might lead to years of moderate to slow post-pandemic growth and that means a severe resource crunch. Cardinal failures are the payoffs raising cost upfront and projects postponed. Thirty years since the reforms the power sector is in a mess again and agriculture remains the mainstay of the economy. Have we made progress? The PM Narendra Modi says his government is working for $ 5 trillion economy. But former PM Manmohan Singh says that the future economic path is tougher than 1991 and there are promises to keep. The country has to recast policies for the next 30 years for the happiness and growth of 1.64 billion people in 2050 and must byte a new “reform” bullet.
Post-mortem
‘Surveillance state’: Power by any means
T
echnology is churning the world at alarming levels and taking us to unbelievable heights. Nonetheless, the time has come to evaluate whether technology is taking us for the better or the worse. For the past one week, a software technology is dominating the world news, more particularly India. Everyone is talking about Pegasus. Pegasus is dominating the winter session of the Indian parliament. Pegasus is entrenched in all aspects of society and spreading at a rapid pace pushing us to think where would the technology take us – an intriguing one. Pegasus has made deep inroads into the polity and also in other facets too. If left unchecked, it is going pose serious challenges to India’s sovereignty and democracy. Pegasus has triggered serious concerns across the Indian society. Pegasus, an Israel-based NSO group, was founded in 2010. It is a spyware, primarily meant to be used for intelligence and security purposes by the defence forces. Pegasus is the most expensive software that charges $5,00, 000 as fee. Fo r i n s t a l l a t i o n , i t s charges are: 10 iPhones/Android costs about $6,50,000; $5,00,000 for 5 BlackBerry, and the fees vary for specific purposes and people who are to be targeted. Over and above, NSO charges additional annual fee as per the quantum and purpose. Usually, the contract is between Pegasus and nationstates. After the initial order with NSA, Pegasus would get into the business going after individuals by tracking their movements both verbal as well as physical. Software vis-a-vis Pegasus can be slipped into the phones without the knowledge of the owners. It is so sophisticated that has all features in one. Perhaps the most expensive spyware. For installation, it costs about three crores. NSOs mission at the face value seem to be noble and laudable, but the user-value seem to be dubious and devastating. For example, the primary mission of NSO is to save the world by protecting everyone from terrorism, anti-social and antinational activities. It is ‘believed’ to help the elected governments from rebellion and revolution. And so, usually, this software is being procured by the defence and home ministries because it is meant for strategic, monitoring and surveillance purposes (both internal and external) aggressions, revolts and conflicts. Pegasus can filter and monitor incoming and outgoing calls. It can practically see through everything. It has many clients across the world who have
brought the spyware. NSA in its list has about 45 governments and 65 security agencies that have bought the technology of Pegasus. For instance, several French leaders including its President are among those potential targets under surveillance by spyware made by the Israel-based NSO Group. The Paris prosecutor’s office announced that it was going to probe the suspected use of the Pegasus spyware to target journalists, politicians and others. Similarly, in India, politicians, chief ministers, opposition leaders, members in the judiciary, government agencies are under surveillance. whether the Government of India under the aegis of PM Modi belonging to the BJP used Pegasus to unseat governments belonging to other political parties? How many leaders have been snooped or listed in the hacking? In addition, questions such as: whether the current government at the Centre used Pegasus under the guise of “Operation Kamala” in 2019 toppling the Congress-JD (S)? More and more question surface as to whether Pegasus used the software to topple governments in Manipur, Goa, Arunachal Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh. Pegasus is being used nowadays to target politicians, journalists, members of civil society and those who take on the governments (Centre and State) who raise critical questions against their policies and programs. The critical voices are under surveillance and wire-tapped. But, the government at the Centre denies and views it as anti-India campaign. It calls the campaign as malicious and timely-programmed to destroy the image of India and the government. It further adds that those who are jealous of the ways the Government of India handled corona waves and efficacy of vaccination. GOI says that the current snooping scandal be considered as ‘rubbish’ and trying to soften the issue. One cannot rubbish the Pegasus as it has violated the right to privacy. Perceptions vary from one to another. Some say Pegasus’s use of spyware is India’s ‘worst ever’ snoop scandal, while others say worse than ‘Watergate Scandal’. Even Jamal Khashoggi murder is linked NSO’s Pegasus. The killers with the help of Pegasus tracked Khashoggi’s movement and killed. Israel-based NSO group has infiltrated into India, and so, whether NSO gives a clean chit or not, it is riddled with a bundle of contradiction. A simple question that surface in the minds of many is: whether the GOI acquired
Pegasus from NSO or not? It becomes abundantly clear that only the governments can enter into contract with NSO to acquire Pegasus – in the name of “national security” and “surveillance” against internal and external threats. Nevertheless, the relationship between the supplier and the receiver is yet to be established. But, the GOI would go all out to rubbish, whatever the opposition says. However, the pressure is mounting as many things concerning Pegasus involvement across the globe and more specifically the events that happened in India unfolds “possibilities”. Hundreds of people are its targets in the ‘snoop web’ of Pegasus. More importantly, NSO supplies the software Pegasus to the governments of the day, who eventually become the end-users. NSO supplies the software with an assumption that there would be legitimate or authorized surveillance and use of the spyware to protect and promote democracy. After acquisition, leaders of the opposition, journalists, media personnel and critics of the government come under surveillance and spied upon. If this is the case, who is accountable and what then is the responsibility of NSO? The end-users, like GOI for example, had acquired Pegasus and with the help of it had spied and hacked the phones of those involved in promoting democracy setting the wrongs right, who should be held responsible? If the State via GOI commits crimes and violates human rights against those who strive for justice and freedom using Pegasus, then who should be held culpable? How can NSO be brought under the loop? In the name of protecting ‘national security’, if the government and its agencies hack phones, monitor the movement of those who are critical of the government, then what is to be done? And how to go about? Buying the technology is not the crime, but for what purpose the government uses and for what purposes it is being used? Treating people like monsters, terrorists and antinationals by using the spyware shall never be tolerated. Rogue state via the government can go to any extent to protect and promote its interests to acquire power by all means and at all costs. There are about or more 50,000 potential targets, which means that we are already under surveillance – ‘enough is enough’ and so, there should be an investigation/ probe at the highest level vis-à-vis Supreme Court of India. Private Schools and Fees
ecently the print media was abuzz with matters relating to school fees. The All Nagaland Private Schools’ Association (ANPSA) tried to explain the position of the schools on fee collection, while making an appeal to the government for help. Today, the private sector, be it school or any other organization, is economically impacted due to the repeated lockdowns. Tens of thousands of families, and more, too have been rendered helpless by the pandemic-related restrictions. To cope with this unusual situation some private schools have waived the tuition fees of students from the economically weaker sections, while some have given other incentives. The question now is - how much more can they give? Can they waive the fees of all students, even for a few months? As we are made to understand, the private schools of Nagaland hardly get any support from the government. Moreover, comparing the fee structure of Nagaland’s private schools with those of many other states, education is very affordable, even to the lower income groups in Nagaland. The Private Schools are the major employer in the private sector in Nagaland; many other establishments/ enterprises/businesses have failed or are struggling due to various reasons. The private schools have also contributed immensely to the overall growth of the children of the state. The results of the various Board Examinations tell the story. The teachers are not well paid, but they have consistently delivered. They, with the supporting staff and managements, deserve our applause. Now with the massive disruption due to the pandemic the private schools are on the verge of collapse. The major issue is the payment of school fees. The parents/ guardians and well-meaning organizations feel the schools should not charge fees, or make exemptions to a great extent. One reason often cited is that the children do not attend school. But are the teachers not serving society? The pandemic has hit everyone very hard, including the private school teachers who however, had to go out of their comfort zones to deliver, in the form of conducting classes and examinations, evaluating their students, etc., all online. To ensure accountability most management ensure their teachers attend school regularly. These teachers work to the best of their abilities to ensure the students did not lose on education. It is true however, that many students suffer for poor connectivity, but this is a problem of the system, which has got most of us in a vice-like grip. To now ask the management of the private schools to waive the fees for a few
months or not insist on fees at all is asking for too much. We should remember that the managements pay the salaries of the teachers and all supporting staff from the revenue generated from fees. The above demands are an act of betrayal to the teachers, who will stop getting salaries or get a good percentage snipped off. Perhaps there are ways to ensure that everyone in the system gets something during these hard times. It will be a great gesture on the part of the management of private schools if they could waive the fees of those children from families that are really struggling; thanks to some who have already done it. It will also be good of them to exempt the students from paying some fees for facilities not used, such as Games & Sports, Medical, meals (where applicable), transportation, library, etc. However, the public should understand that it will be very difficult for the schools as they also employ full-time wardens, librarians, drivers, caregivers for small children, gardeners, cleaners, cooks, etc. Are we, as a society, ready to sacrifice these supporting staff by destroying their livelihoods? But how do the managements adjust to this shortfall? By stopping payment of salaries or reducing the salaries of their staff, which as it is, is meager. These teachers and staff will be forced to search for other jobs. After all, they need food on the table for their families. If even a fraction of the teachers leave today, there will be great upheaval in society. The education of tens of thousands of children will be adversely impacted. This will destroy our fragile society. Therefore, the request of the ANPSA made to the government for financial aid is fully justified. Here, even we the public, particularly the government servants, those generating some income, and the wealthy have a great responsibility towards society. Let us pay the fees due to the schools, in spite of our children not getting the benefit of physical attendance. If we do so, we support the teachers and other staff, and we also contribute to society. The Government too should support the private schools during the pandemic by providing grants towards fees of those children from the economically weaker sections. One wonders if the Nagaland Government can help the children of the weaker sections of society by way of providing scholarships in the future, solely for their education! Let’s support our Private School Teachers and the Supporting Staff! They are the reason our children are progressing, even in these tremendously difficult times. If our teachers are well, society is well. Prof. G.T. Thong, Lower Agri Colony, Kohima

Why less athletes from Nagaland?
Sir,
The Northeast is blessed with talented athletes and Nagaland is no exception. It is however sad to see how the state lags behind when it comes to representation in both the national and international level. Needless to say, there has been hardly any encouragement and incentives for budding or even established sportsperson from the state. It is high time the state government gives more importance to sports so that the state can produce medalists in the future. Ajano Lotha, Dimapur

Nine tourists killed in Himachal accident
S H I M L A , J U LY 2 5 (IANS): At least nine tourists, mainly from DelhiNational Capital Region, were killed and three others seriously injured in a rockslide in Himachal Pradesh’s Kinnaur district on Sunday, the police said. The tourists were on the way from Sangla to Chitkul, a popular tourist spot some 250 km from the state capital, when the boulders fell on their vehicle, killing nine on the spot. Superintendent of Police S.R. Rana said the rescue operation is on and the road has been closed for the traffic. Nearly 50 vehicles are stranded on the road stretch. Two of the
injured have been referred to a nearby hospital. Eyewitnesses said the administration had a tough time extricating the victims from the boulders. People in the area began rescue operations even before local authorities reached the spot. Expressing grief over the accident, Chief Minister Jai Ram Thakur asked local authorities to speed up the rescue work and provide relief to the next of kin of each of those killed and injured. A video of the disaster showing massive boulders sliding off the hilltop and damaging a bailey bridge and a portion of the highway has gone viral.

Delhi Police arrest former IL&FS director NEW DELHI, JUL 25 ( AGENCIES): Delhi Police on Sunday said they have arrested former managing director of Infrastructure Leasing & Financial Services Ltd (IL&FS) Ramchand Karunakaran from Mumbai in a Rs 100 crore cheating case. Karunakaran was earlier arrested in 2019 and 2020 but had got out on bail. Police said several cases have been registered against Karunakaran and other directors of the IL&FS Rail Ltd for misappropriating funds, cheating other companies and forgery. RK Singh, Additional Commissioner of Police (Economic Offences Wing), said, “We had received a complaint from the director of Enso Infrastructures, Ashish Begwani, in 2018. He alleged that he was approached by Karunakaran, Ravi Parthasarthy and Hari Shankaran — all former directors of IL&FS — with an investment proposal in 2010. Begwani’s company poured in Rs 170 crores for a 15% share in IL&FS Rail Ltd. This was for the Gurgaon rapid metro project.” The complainant later realized that his funds were being misused since no work was started by the company. They had also bagged “bogus contract orders” worth Rs 21 crore from another company called Silverpoint Infratech Ltd. These contract orders were forged by the accused.

NEW DELHI, JUL 25 (IANS): With the countdown for the change of guard nearing, the BJP top brass is contemplating to recommend the incumbent National General Secretary (Organisation) of the party, B.L. Santhosh as the successor of Karnataka Chief Minister B.S. Yediyurappa. The speculation about change of guard gained unprecedented momentum in the state after the 78-year-old Lingayat strongman and the BJP’s aging mascot in Karnataka said on July 23 that he would abide by the party high-command’s decision whether to remain as Chief Minister or to quit. “Our party leaders will inform me on Sunday (July 25) evening and I will follow their diktat on Monday, (July 26), as I will be completing two years in the office,” he had stated on July 23. It is our responsibility that we do our work in such a manner that it helps in uniting our country which is full of diversities,” the prime minister said. “We have to move forward with Nation First, Always First,” he asserted. Many programmes in connection with Amrit Mahotsav are being run, the prime minister said, adding that the Ministry of Culture has started an initiative to have maximum number of Indians sing the national anthem together. For this, a website, http://

I hope you connect yourselves with this novel initiative. In the days to come, you will get to see many such campaigns and efforts,” Modi said. NEW DELHI, JUL 25 (PTI): Stressing on ‘Nation First, Always First’ mantra, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Sunday that as the country enters its 75th year of Independence, every citizen should lead a “Bharat Jodo Andolan” in the same manner as Mahatma Gandhi had led the “Bharat Chhoro Andolan”. In his monthly Mann Ki Baat radio broadcast, he noted that on the coming August 15, India will enter its 75th year of Independence and highlighted that Amrit Mahotsav is being celebrated throughout the country to mark that year. The need of the nation is to unite and work towards national progress, Modi said. “Just like Bapu (Mahatma Gandhi) led the ‘Bharat Chhoro Andolan’ (Quit India movement), every Indian must lead the ‘Bharat Jodo Andolan

New-age stocks poised to enter Nifty50 index
MUMBAI, JUL 25 (IANS): New-age stocks are seen poised to enter the Nifty50 index, with Info Edge (India) being the closest contender. An ICICI Securities report said that based on data till July 19, the upcoming semi-annual NIFTY50 reshuffle could result in Info Edge being the closest contender to replace IOCL on September 29. “However, Info Edge is marginally behind in terms of average free float market capitalisation criteria ($5bn and 3.7 per cent lower than 1.5x that of IOCL - the smallest free float market cap stock within the current NIFTY50 index) while fulfilling other conditions such as inclusion in the F&O list and being part of the upcoming proforma NSE100 universe amongst others,” it said. Info Edge will be the first pure play internet platform company to be included in the Nifty50 index as and when it qualifies. “To put things into perspective the US Dow Jones Industrial Average still doesn’t have any of the internet platform com-
panies such as Amazon or Google as part of its constituents, given the limitations of it being a price weighted index,” the report said. In the upcoming proforma NSE100 universe list, which will be based on the average free float market cap since February 2021 till now, two other nonNIFTY50 index stocks that rank ahead of Info Edge are Avenue Supermarts and Adani Green Energy. “However, given that both the stocks are not part of the F&O list currently, they are excluded from our likely list although Avenue Supermarts has the edge in terms of qualifying as a
F&O stock,” it said. All the three stocks are notably from the new-age economy sectors of internet businesses, organised discount grocery retail with ecommerce incubation, and a green energy company, respectively. Also, all these three companies have a 1-year forward P/E ratio of >100x, thereby inflating the NSE 100 P/E ratio as compared to the NIFTY50. New large cap internet platform companies like Zomato with high free float market cap due to zero promoter holdings could be serious contenders for entry into the benchmark indices going ahead, it said.

NEW DELHI, JUL 25 (IANS): Prices of petrol and diesel were unchanged for the 8th consecutive day across the four metros on Sunday. The stagnation in fuel price revision can be attributed to the global developments on oil production and rising US inventories which softened crude and product rates. International crude prices declined around 10 per cent to $69 a barrel from a high of over $77 a barrel just a few weeks ago. Currently, the Brent crude is above $72 per barrel. The oil marketing companies, however, stopped short of reducing the retail price of petrol and diesel as more time is required to study the oil price movement before any downward revision. Already, crude has firmed up in last few days and this could prevent decline in prices. With no change in prices on Sunday, in the national capital petrol continues to be sold for Rs 101.84 per litre, while diesel remains at the unchanged price of Rs 89.87 a litre. In Mumbai, Chennai and Kolkata, petrol was sold for Rs 107.83, Rs 102.49 and Rs 102.08 per litre, respectively.

Further, NPP claimed that Nagas have not authorised the 60 MLAs to make decisions on Naga political issues on their behalf. Taking further jibe, NPP reminded NPF of the role of an opposition which is to question the government and hold it accountable for various lapses. It said the opposition is to act as watchdog over the government while safeguarding the life and liberty of people. As one of the biggest opposition party in recent memory (with 25 seats), NPP said NPF should be questioned by the people
Meanwhile, NPP has also demanded upgradation of Niuland in Dimapur district, Bhandari in Wokha district and Tzurangkong in Mokokchung district into full-fledged districts for better administration in border areas, besides immediately sanctioning village guards in all border areas. NPP also asked State government why Foothill road was still not commutable despite many representations and requests by Nagas and commitments given to them? It also warned the government of resorting to sit-in protest across Nagaland, if the road was not completed at the earliest and facilitate its citizen.

A total of 58 crore litres of ethanol was produced by 54 distilleries established across the state. According to the government spokesman, the state has manufactured 58 crore litres of ethanol, a solvent that is essentially mixed with petrol for environmental purposes, in the year 2020-21. Govt asked to declare Aboi as dist on Aug 15 (From p-1) Asked whether Aboi fulfilled all the criteria for a separate district, he pointed that out of a total 2,60,000 Konyak population, Aboi and Tobu had around 1,20,000, maintaining that the committee was demanding separate district comprising the two with headquarter at Aboi. Former Lok Sabha member and former ADDC convener Wangyuh Konyak claimed that Aboi, which was earlier known as Champang, was one of the oldest towns in the state. Mentioning that Mon had nine constituencies with only one deputy commissioner (DC) and one super-
intendent of police (SP), he observed that it was very difficult to carry out developmental activities and maintain law and order situation. He added the general public also faced inconveniences in getting their ST certificates. Further, claiming that ADDC had also received no objection certificate (NOC) from Konyak Union (KU) vis-à-vis its demand for making Aboi a separate district, he said the committee had also received support from different tribes like Chang, Khiamniungan, Yimchunger, Phom and Sangtam and Eastern Naga People’s Organisation. He said it was unanimously decided that there would be only one
Konyak Union, even after Aboi was made a separate district. Sharing a brief history of Aboi, Wangnyuh said it was established in 1955 as a base superintendent and later upgraded to circle office in 1958. He mentioned that it was subsequently upgraded to extra assistant commissioner’s office on January 26, 1978 and then into additional deputy commissioner headquarters on December 8, 1997. ADDC co-convener Manlem Konyak, ADDC member and BJP’s Aboi unit president Ashu Konyak and ADDC press secretary Alang were also present on the occasion.

Macron calls Israeli PM on allegations of snooping JERUSALEM, JUL 25 (PTI): French President Emmanuel Macron has spoken to Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett on reports that Morocco’s security forces may have used the Pegasus spyware to snoop on his cellphones, according to a media report. A global media consortium last week reported that 50,000 cellphone numbers were being spied on using the Pegasus malware, which has been developed by Israeli cybersecurity company NSO Group. The mobile phones of French President Macron and 15 members of his government may have been among potential targets, according to a member of the media consortium. Macron telephoned Bennett on Thursday and

The Israeli prime minister said that the allegations are from a period when he had not assumed office but assured that the required conclusions on the matter will be reached upon. Macron had called an
urgent national security meeting on Thursday to discuss the Pegasus spyware after reports about its misuse in France emerged. The Moroccan government has denied reports that the country’s security forces used the spyware to eavesdrop on the French president. Similarly, the NSO Group has denied that the French President was targeted.

‘Roof of the World’ no more an enigma now DHARAMSALA, JUL 25 (IANS): Over two-thirds the size of India, Tibet, also known as the ‘Roof of the World’ or ‘Third Pole of the Earth’, may no more be an enigma for the outside world now. For, China has opened its door to the tourists after keeping the Tibet Autonomous Region in the southwest, the land rich in minerals and a variety of flora and fauna, out of bounds for ages. President Xi Jinping last week made an unannounced visit to the politically sensitive region of Tibet, the first by a Chinese leader in more than 30 years. Besides visiting Nyingchi, a strategically located border town close to Arunachal Pradesh, and the regional capital Lhasa, Xi inspected a number of key local infrastructure projects, including the Lhasa-Nyingchi section of the Sichuan-Tibet railway

INTERNATIONAL project. As per the regional tourism development department, the traditional culture-dominated Tibet Autonomous Region is seeing a tourism boom with a record 17.58 million trips made by visitors in the first six months this year, up 110.9 per cent year-on-year growth. It says the opening of the Lhasa-Nyingchi railway, the first electrified railway on June 25, has injected new vitality into the development of Tibetan tourism. Tibet saw more than 35 million tourists in 2020 despite the pandemic, up from 1.8 million tourists in 2005, according to the local government. But for the foreign journalists and government dignitaries it’s still off-limits, fearing backlash for seizing control of the Tibetan monasteries and expanding Chinese education rather than the local

B A G H DA D, J U L 2 5 (IANS): Iraqi Prime Minister Mustafa al-Kadhimi has announced the dismantlement of a terrorist cell linked to a recent bombing in capital Baghdad, which left dozens of people killed and wounded. “We have arrested all members of the cowardly terrorist cell that planned and carried out the attack,” al-Kadhimi tweeted on Saturday, adding that they will be publicly tried. Last week, 30 people were killed and more than 50 wounded in the bomb explosion at a crowded market in Sadr city, an eastern district of Baghdad. The Islamic State (IS) terror group later claimed responsibility for the attack. Deadly bombings have been rare in Baghdad, as the security situation has improved in Iraq since security forces fully defeated the IS militants across the country late in 2017.

KABUL, JUL 25 (IANS): A total of 81 militants were confirmed dead as the Afghan forces, backed by helicopters and fighter planes, launched airstrikes in the northern Balkh province, an army statement released here on Sunday said. The sor ties were launched on Saturday in parts of the restive Kaldar and Chamtal districts, leaving 81 insurgents dead and injuring 43 others, reports Xinhua news agency. A large number of arms and ammunition, as well as over two dozen vehicles and motorbikes of the militants, were also destroyed during the air raids, the statement added. NASA lander reveals Mars’ deep interiors for 1st time N
ASA’s Insight lander has revealed deep interiors of the Red Planet for the first time, confirming that the planet’s centre is molten (Earth’s outer core is molten while its inner core is solid). Three papers based on the seismometer’s data on stationary lander were published in the journal Science, providing details on the depth and composition of Mars’ crust, mantle and core. The scientists found the crust was thinner than expected and may have two or even three sub-layers. It goes as deep as 20 kms if there are two sub-layers, or 37 kms if there are three. Beneath that is the mantle, which extends 1,560 kms below the surface. At the heart of Mars is the core, which has a radius of 1,830 km. “When we first started putting together the concept of the mission more than a decade ago, the information in these papers is what we hoped to get at the end,” said Bruce Banerdt, InSight’s principal investigator.
“This represents the culmination of all the work and worry over the past decade,” added Banerdt from NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Southern California. Before NASA’s InSight spacecraft touched down on Mars in 2018, the rovers and orbiters studying the Red Planet concentrated on its surface. The stationary lander’s seismometer has changed that, revealing details about the planet’s deep interior for the first time. Like Earth, Mars heated up as it formed from the dust and larger clumps of meteoritic material orbiting the Sun that helped to shape our early solar system. Over the first tens of millions of years, the planet
separated into three distinct layers - the crust, mantle, and core - in a process called differentiation. Part of InSight’s mission was to measure the depth, size, and structure of these three layers. Confirming the size of the molten core was especially exciting for the team. “This study is a oncein-a-lifetime chance,” said Simon Stahler of the Swiss research university ETH Zurich, lead author of the core paper. “It took scientists hundreds of years to measure Earth’s core; after the Apollo missions, it took them 40 years to measure the Moon’s core. InSight took just two years to measure Mars’ core.” The earthquakes most
people feel come from faults caused by tectonic plates shifting. Unlike Earth, Mars has no tectonic plates; its crust is instead like one giant plate. But faults, or rock fractures, still form in the Martian crust due to stresses caused by the slight shrinking of the planet as it continues to cool, according to NASA. InSight scientists spend much of their time searching for bursts of vibration in seismograms, where the tiniest wiggle on a line can represent a quake or, for that matter, noise created by wind. “What we’re looking for is an echo,” said Amir Khan of ETH Zurich, lead author of the paper on the mantle. “We’re detecting a direct sound - the quake - and then listening for an echo off a reflector deep underground.” These results are only the beginning. While InSight’s energy level is being managed, its seismometer is still listening, and scientists are hopeful they’ll detect a quake bigger than 4.0. (IANS)

omedian Jackie Mason has died; he was 93. Mason died on Saturday (July 24), at Mt Sinai Hospital in Manhattan after being hospitalised for over two weeks, the celebrity lawyer Raul Felder told Associated Press. A former rabbi, Mason became a world-renowned stand-up comedian who perfected the art of amused outrage. He was known for his social commentary and sharp wit. Mason had many television cameos on shows like 30 Rock and The Simpsons and he regularly appeared on many of America’s late night chat shows. “Eighty per cent of mar ried men cheat in America. The rest cheat in Europe,” he once joked. Another famous Mason line was: “Politics doesn’t make strange bedfellows, marriage does.” About himself, he once said: “I was so self-conscious, every time football players went into a huddle, I thought they were talking about me.” Mason was born Jacob Maza, the son of a rabbi. All
Jackie Mason of his brothers became rabbis as did Mason initially. However, he later turned his talents to comedy. “A person has to feel emotionally barren or empty or frustrated in order to become a comedian,” Mason said in 1987. “I don’t think people who feel comfortable or happy are motivated to become comedians. You’re searching for something and you’re willing to pay a high price to get that attention.” His big break came in 1961 when he appeared on Steve Allen’s weekly television variety show. The success of that led to his appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show and more. His death was mourn-
ed throughout the entertainment world. Fellow comedian Gilbert Gottfried called him “one of the best”, while Fox News personality Sean Hannity described Mason as “irreverent, iconoclastic, funny, smart and a great American patriot”. The Simpson’s Al Jean paid tribute sharing one of his cameos from the show. “I feel like Krusty. We will very much miss Jackie Mason,” he tweeted. Comedian Omid Djalili also paid tribute. “Currently imagining a long queue at the Pearly Gates as St. Peter makes Jackie Mason do his whole act for him. RIP Jackie”, he wrote. (NME)
Higher net worth at midlife means a longer life: Study Milind Soman congratulates Priya Malik Matt Damon discusses Ben Affleck reunion for winning gold at Olympics, trolled

hat is the connection of your net worth with a longer, healthier life? A lot, say researchers. In a first such wealth and longevity study, a team of US researchers have claimed that Americans with higher net worth at midlife tend to live longer. Incorporating siblings and twin pair data, researchers from Northwestern University analysed the midlife net worth of adults (mean age 46.7 years) and their mortality rates 24 years later. They discovered those with greater wealth at midlife tended to live longer. “The within-family association provides strong evidence that an association between wealth accumulation and life expectancy exists, because comparing siblings within the same family to each other controls for all of the life experience and biology that they
M
share,” said Eric Finegood, a postdoctoral fellow in the Institute for Policy Research at Northwestern. The researchers also considered the possibility that previous health conditions, such as heart disease or cancer, could impact an individual’s ability to accrue wealth due to activity limitations or healthcare costs -- possibly confounding any association between wealth and longevity. To address this, they re-analysed the data using only individuals without cancer or heart disease. However, even within this sub-group of healthy in-
dividuals, the within-family association between wealth and longevity remained, said the findings published in the journal JAMA Health Forum. Far too many American families are living paycheck to paycheck with little to no financial savings to draw on in times of need. “At the same time, wealth inequality has skyrocketed. Our results suggest that building wealth is important for health at the individual level, even after accounting for where one starts out in life,” said senior study author Greg Miller. (IANS)

att Damon has opened up about reuniting with Ben Affleck to write a script for the first time in 25 years. The friends worked on the screenplay for ‘The Last Duel’ with Nicole Holofcener, the first time they have written together since their breakthrough film ‘Good Will Hunting’, which was released in 1997. Speaking on ‘The Tonight Show’, Matt said: “It’s the first movie we’ve written in 25 years or something, and we wrote with another great writer named Nicole Holofcener. We saw it as a story of perspective, and so Ben and I wrote the male perspectives and Nicole wrote the female perspective.” Matt previously admitted they have become more efficient at writing since their first attempt. He told ‘Entertainment Tonight’: “I think that writ-
Ben Affleck & Matt Damon ing process for ‘Good Will Hunting’ was so inefficient. “You know, because we didn’t really understand structure so we wrote thousands of pages. ... We’d be like, ‘Well, what if this happened?,’ and then we’d just write different scenes. So, we had all these kind of disparate scenes and then we kind of tried to jam them together into something that looked like a movie. “But this time around, you know, it’s a story about perspective. So, there are two knights and then there’s the Lady Marguerite. So
Ben and I wrote the male perspectives and Nicole Holofcener wrote the female perspective. That’s kind of the architecture of that movie. “And I think we just found that having made ... like, making movies for 30 years, we actually learned something about structure along the way and the process went along a lot faster. “And so I think we’ll write a lot more in the future just because it didn’t turn out to be as time consuming as we thought. It was actually a lot of fun.” (Contactmusic)

Olympics tennis: Sania-Ankita knocked out in the first round
TOKYO, JUL 25 (IANS): The Indian pair of Sania Mirza and Ankita Raina were knocked out in the first round of the women’s doubles event at the Tokyo Olympics. Sania and Ankita lost to the Kichenok twins of Ukraine -- Lyudmyla and Nadiia -- 0-6, 7-6(0) 10-8 -- at the Ariake Tennis Park on Sunday, bringing an early end to their campaign. Sania and Ankita were in firm control of the match midway but allowed the Ukrainians to make a comeback and, eventually, run away with the match. The Indian pair had won the first set 6-0 in 21 minutes, giving no room to the sisters for breaking in. Sania and Ankita were leading 5-3 in the second set before a twist in the script arrived. The Ukrainians roared back by breaking Sania, who was

serving and took the set to a tie-break, which they impressively won 7-0, forcing a decider in the third set. In the super tiebreaker, Sania and Ankita seemed to be sensationally faltering as they found themselves 0-8 down. But the Indian duo fought back to level the scores at 8-8. The Kichenok twins prevented Sania and Ankita from running away with the match. The sisters

Tennis: Defending champ Murray pull out from singles TOKYO, JUL 25 (IANS): Defending champion Andy Murray of Great Britain withdrew from the singles draw at the Tokyo Olympics on Sunday citing a right quad injury. The 34-year-old plans to continue in the doubles draw with Joe Salisbury. The former world No. 1 was scheduled to play Felix Auger-Aliassime of Canada in the opening round. “I am really disappointed at having to withdraw, but the medical staff have advised me against playing in both events, so I have made the difficult decision to withdraw from the singles and focus on playing doubles,” Murray said according to olympics. com. The former world No. 1 is a two-time Olympic singles gold medallist (2012 London and 2016 Rio).
Alizadeh wins chance for first Refugee team medal
CHIBA, JAPAN, JUL 25 (AGENCIES): Iranian Kimia Alizadeh could make Olympic history for the second time on Sunday after winning her first three matches in the women’s taekwondo -57kg category and a chance at the bronze in what would be the firstever medal for the Refugee Olympic Team. Five years ago in Rio, Alizadeh became the only Iranian woman to win an Olympic medal when she took bronze. She fled to Germany last year, and is one of three taekwondo athletes competing for the refugee team at the Tokyo Games. The Refugee Olympic Team had 10 competitors in three sports on their first Games appearance in Rio. It has 29 athletes in 12 sports

in Tokyo 2020. Alizadeh’s first three matches were all notable: the first, against erstwhile compatriot Nahid Kiyani Chandeh - coached by her previous instructor - and the second against double Olympic champion Jade Jones of Britain in the
round of 16. In the third, the 23-year-old defied the odds by beating Chinese gold medal favourite Zhou Lijun, who paced around the octagonal mat in disbelief as she conceded the match. Competing under the white flag, Alizadeh was a
clear favourite in the Makuhari Messe arena, entering to applause and cheers from members of the media and others in the venue at which no general public spectators were allowed. Alizadeh, who said she left her homeland because she was fed up with being used as a propaganda tool, lost to Russian Tatiana Minina in the semi-final round. She will have a chance at one of the two bronze medals.7 Alizadeh’s defeat of Jones and her subsequent victory over Zhou were among many upsets on day two of the four-day taekwondo competition. Gold medal contenders in the men’s -58kg category, South Korea’s Lee Dae-hoon and China’s Zhao Shuai both lost a chance for the crown.
TREE PLANTATION DRIVE – 2021
TOKYO, JUL 25 (PTI): The fancied Indian shooting team drew a blank for the second day running in the Tokyo Olympics here, with a major weapon malfunction leading to a heartbreaking exit for the young Manu Bhaker in the women’s 10 air pistol event. Appearing in her maiden Olympics, the 19-year-old Manu finished a creditable 12th, despite losing nearly 20 minutes during the qualifications after the cocking lever in her pistol broke down, forcing her to go to a designated area for getting it fixed. Manu shot 575, while the cut-off was 577. Ya s h a sw i n i S i n g h Deswal, the other first-timer at the Games, recovered from a subdued start to end 13th, with a total score of 574. In the men’s 10 air rifle event, both the experienced Deepak Kumar and the teenaged Divyansh Singh Panwar finished a lowly 26th and 32nd respectively.

Deepak aggregated 624.7 while Divyansh shot 622.8 over the six series, scores which were never going to be enough to make the final. India’s Angad Vir Singh Bajwa missed two targets out of 75 to be placed 11th on count back at the end of the third round in men’s skeet qualifications. He looks to be in search of a top-six finals spot. Angad had scores of 25, 24, 24 in the first three series and will come back on
Monday to shoot the final two series. Compatriot Mairaj Ahmad Khan shot 71 and was placed 25th out of the 30 shooters in fray. Taken together, the first two days’ performance, or, the lack of it, is certainly going to raise a few eyebrows within the Indian shooting fraternity, including the National Rifle Association of India (NRAI), which has done its bit in preparing its athletes.
Govt exempts Olympic returnees from RT-PCR test TOKYO, JUL 25 (PTI): Athletes, officials and media returning to the country from Tokyo Olympics will not be required to produce RT-PCR negative test reports for COVID-19 before their departure from the Japanese capital, the Government of India said on Sunday. The decision was intimated in an official letter by Lav Agarwal, Joint Secretary in the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare after the Indian Olympic President Narinder Batra had earlier in the day requested the government to exempt returnees from the Tokyo Games to produce RT-PCR negative report before boarding their flights. The Health Ministry official, however, said that only those individuals who have returned negative in the saliva-based test prior to their departure to India will be allowed to board the flight. Besides, all those returning from Tokyo will be retested upon landing in India. “Only asymptomatic individuals should be allowed to board the flight. “The delegation will,

however, have to be retested on arrival and would be allowed to leave the Airport after giving the samples with the condition that they will be required to undertake self-monitoring of their health for 14 days,” said the Health Ministry letter communication to Sports Ministry. Earlier in the day, in a letter addressed to Sports Secretary Ravi Mittal, Batra said since the Olympic contingent members have been fully vaccinated and undergone tests on a regular basis in Tokyo, they be exempted from the requirement of showing RT-PCR negative test reports while returning to the country. “Our humble request...
is to allow the athletes, officials, IOA delegates, NSF officials/delegates and the media, who are coming back from Tokyo and have an accreditation card based on which Japan allowed them entry into Japan, be allowed to enter back in India without RT PCR test and report,” said Batra. According to Tokyo Olympics COVID-19 protocols, athletes undergo antigen tests everyday and those who return positive or
have values close to infection have their RT PCR tests done. Also, athletes have to leave Tokyo within 48 hours of their events getting over. India’s entire contingent was fully vaccinated against COVID-19 before its departure for Tokyo Olympics and Batra said it should be taken into consideration. “You are very well aware that all athletes, all officials (IOA and NSF) are: 1. Double Vaccinated, 2. Took 2 RT PCR tests before departure to Tokyo, 3. Every member of the contingent, delegate from IOA & NSFs are being tested in Tokyo everyday for Covid with Sylvia test till each individual’s departure back to India,” he said. “To get RTPCR test done in Tokyo or outside Tokyo where contingent is based is a very difficult task. Here paper work is perfect but in practice there is lot of confusion and very difficult to get things.”

But by that time the Indians had lost all hope of even launching an attack on the Australian goal. T h e Ko o k a b u r r a s played their typical brand of aggressive hockey, running hard and getting in the right places to make proper interventions. The Indians could not keep up pace with them and the defence was totally outclassed, at times leaving goalkeeper PR Sreejesh dejected. Sreejesh was also unlucky as some of the shots that he blocked, went back to the Australians. India now have a rest day on Monday and will take on Spain on Tuesday. They now need to win the remaining three matches in Group A to finish second and qualify for the quarterfinals.

TOKYO, JUL 25 (IANS): A shell-shocked India went down 1-7 to world No. 1 Australia in a Group A league match, thrashed by a team that was too strong and too dominating, at the Tokyo Olympics here on Sunday. India, who had scraped through to a narrow 3-2 win against New Zealand on Saturday, were totally off colour and found the 2004 Olympic Games gold medallists too hot to handle, as the Kookaburras rode roughshod over Graham Reid’s boys and blasted seven goals past them at the Oi Hockey Stadium here. Though the Indians matched the Aussies till midway through the first quarter, Colin Bach’s side slammed three goals in the second quarter to snuff out their challenge. 1st T20I: India beat SL by 38 runs
C O LO M B O, J U L 2 5 (IANS): India put up a commanding display to defeat Sri Lanka by 38 runs in the first T20 International here at the R Premadasa Stadium on Sunday. While India made 164/5 which looked within Sri Lanka’s range, the bowlers led by Bhuvneshwar Kumar (2/21) and Deepak Chahar (2/24) ensured it was too much for the host. Though the Sri Lankans had got off to a flying start, losing wickets only intermittently, and were in the game at 107/4 after 15 overs, Chahar’s wicket of Charith Asalanka (44 off 26 balls) started the slide for the home side who kept losing wickets at regular intervals as the pressure of a rising required run rate kept mounting. From 111/4 -- with 54 to get in 27 balls -- the Dasun Shanaka’s side was all out for 126 in 18.3 overs. Leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal (1/19) bowled well to build the pressure on the Sri Lankans. Deb-

utant leg-spinner Varun Chakravarthy (1/28) took a wicket towards the end. Earlier, Suryakumar Yadav’s 50 (off 34 balls) and skipper Shikhar Dhawan’s 46 (off 36 balls) helped India score 164/5 in 20 overs. The two batsmen’s knocks kept India steady
in the face of some disciplined Sri Lankan bowling that was powered by impressive spells from legspinner Wanindu Hasaranga (2/28) and pace bowler Dushmantha Chameera (2/24). Wicketkeeper-batsman Ishan Kishan scored unbeaten 20 off 14 deliver-
ies with a four and a six. BRIEF SCORES India 164/5 in 20 overs (S Yadav 50, S Dhawan 46, D Chameera 2/24, W Hasaranga 2/28) beat Sri Lanka 126 all out in 18.3 overs (C Asalanka 44, A Fernando 26, B Kumar 4/22, D Chahar 2/24) by 38 runs.

World No. 1 Barty stunned by Tormo in first round
TOKYO, JUL 25 (AGENCIES): World number one Ashleigh Barty was stunned by Sara Sorribes Tormo of Spain in the first round of women’s Olympics singles in Tokyo. Australian Barty, who won her second Grand Slam title at Wimbledon in July, cut a frustrated figure in her 6-4 6-3 loss to 48thranked Sorribes Tormo. The victory is the biggest of Sorribes Tormo’s career. Japan’s second seed Naomi Osaka cruised past Saisai Zheng of China 6-1 6-4. Osaka, who lit the Olympic flame in the opening ceremony, is the highest-ranked player remaining in the draw. Barty will still compete in Tokyo after she and Storm Sanders reached the second round of the women’s doubles on the first day. She put in an error-strewn performance against Sorribes Tormo, making 55 unforced errors to the Spaniard’s 13.
Mary Kom advances to next round in women’s 51kg TOKYO, JUL 25 (IANS): India’s six-time world champion and London Olympic bronze medallist MC Mary Kom started her Tokyo Olympics boxing campaign on a winning as she moved into the Round of 16 in women’s flyweight (51kg) with a convincing 4-1 win on points against Miguelina Hernandez Garcia of Dominican Republic on Sunday. Four of the five judges voted in Mary Kom’s favour. The bout was eventually scored 30-27, 28-29, 29-28, 30-27, 29-28 by the five-member judges’ panel. Mar y Kom, the 38-year-old from Imphal, started aggressively and unleashed a flurry of punches as she dominated the first round. Mary Kom started cautiously but launched aggressive attacks as her opponent kept a loose guard, giving the Indian a good opportunity to use her jab to telling effect. The Indian legend won the round 48-47.
MC Mary Kom
Miguelina, bronze medallist at the 2019 Pan American Games, came out with more intent in the second round and successfully connected some scoring punches. Mary Kom used the right hookleft cross combination to score points and won that round too. With two judges giving Mary Kom, a mother of three,10 points each, the Indian legend, who was awarded the Padma Vibhushan by the government last year, narrowly won this round too, 48-47. Both boxers tried their
best in the third and final round. Miguelina attacked a lot but could not breach Mary’s strong defence. The Indian counter-attacked whenever she got the opportunity and that had all the judges giving the Indian star a perfect 10 -- the round going 50-45 in her favour. This was a great start for the Indian boxer who will face third seed Ingrit Valencia, the Rio Olympics bronze medallist, from Colombia in the round of 16 on Thursday. Mary had failed to qualify for the 2016 Olympics in Rio.
Sindhu makes winning start at Tokyo Swimming: Tunisian Hafnaoui creates history; Aus sets world record TOKYO, JUL 25 (PTI): Reigning world champion P V Sindhu made a dominating start to her Olympic campaign, thrashing Israel’s Ksenia Polikarpova in straight games in the women’s singles group J match here on Sunday. The 26-year-old Indian, seeded sixth, beat the 58th ranked Polikarpova 21-7 21-10 in a lop-sided opening match. “Even though it was an easy first match I didn’t take it in an easy way. It wasn’t like I wasn’t prepared. Every time, it is very important to be focused and be prepared for every single point in every single match,” Sindhu said after the match. “It was quite an easy match but I made sure that we had some rallies and I got used to the court.” The world number seven Indian will next play Hong Kong’s world number 34 Cheung Ngan Yi in the group stage. Rio Games silver medallist Sindhu started on an attacking note but briefly found herself trailing 3-4. However, she moved ahead quickly with Polikarpova making unforced errors. Sindhu entered the break

with 11-5 lead. Soon, Sindhu was on a roll, grabbing 13 straight points. The Indian used her trademark straight and cross court smashes and drops to trouble the Israeli, who couldn’t utilise the few opportunities that came her way. Sindhu sealed the first game in her favour when Polikarpova missed a shot. Polikarpova, who was playing with a strapped knee, continued to struggle with her strokes as Sindhu opened up a 9-3 lead in the second game and then entered the mid-interval with a massive seven-point advantage. It was business as well after the break, with
Sindhu riding on the errors of her opponent. Another wide shot from Polikarpova gave Sindhu 13 match points. The Indian squandered three of them before Polikarpova once again sent the shuttle out to end the match. On her approach to playing a lower-ranked opponent, Sindhu said: “I think it’s important to make sure that you play all of your strokes and get used to them. NEW DELHI, JUL 25 (IANS): Olympic football may not receive as much fanfare as the World Cup or the Euros, but for football lovers, it promises plenty of excitement. A number of players are aiming to leave their mark on this competition, but six of them, we believe, have the best shot at making an impact. Our list of six to watch out for: 1.Pedri (Pedro Gonzalez Lopez): Barcelona’s teenage wonderkid is coming off a stellar Euro 2020 campaign, where he bagged the Young Player of the Tournament Award. He may be old enough to vote, but the 18-year-old plays like a veteran. His remarkable technical skills earn him comparisons with Andres Iniesta. He will represent his country for the first time in the Olympics and looks set to continue his meteoric rise, which has seen him become one of the

best young midfielders in the world. 2.Dani Alves: From a possible future Barcelona Legend, we move on to a player who already is one. The 36-year-old Brazilian isn’t the all-encompassing force that he once was, but his experience will bring leadership to a side that severely lacks it. The rules of the Olympics state that a team can have only three players above the age of 23, so the selection of Alves as one of them was a wise move by head coach Andre Jardine. The Sao Paulo Right Back has won practically everything there is to be won in the beautiful game. His stacked trophy cabinet includes countless league trophies and multiple Champions League winners’ medals, plus two Copa America cups at the national level. A winner in every sense of the word, Alves is likely to consider anything

less than the Olympic Gold to be a major disappointment. 3.Takehiro Tomiyasu: This Bologna player’s name may not be known to the casual football fan, but all of that may change after this Olympics, for the 22-yearold has a very strong case for shining as Japan’s best player. Tomiyasu has impressed at the club level with his elegance on the ball as well as his ability to occupy multiple positions, being able to play both Right Back and Centre Back. Though his performances may have slipped the radar of more casual fans, they haven’t been unnoticed by talent scouts, as several top clubs have been linked with him, notably Tottenham Hotspur. This summer isn’t just an opportunity for Tomiyasu to represent his country. It could potentially be his ticket to one of Europe’s elite clubs.
inka Hosszu of Hungary finished fifth. She has won three Olympic gold medals, including one from the women’s 400m IM at Rio 2016. In men’s 400m IM, Rio Olympics r unnerup Chase Kalisz of the United States claimed the gold in 4:09.42. American Jay Litherland made the podium with a silver in 4:10.28. The 21-year-old Australian Brendon Smith, who finished 4:09.27 in the qualifier, struck a bronze in 4:10.38. In Sunday’s semifinals, Adam Peaty of Britain led the way in a bid to retain his men’s 100m breaststroke Olympic title.
Olympics TT: Manika advances to 3rd round as Sathiyan bows out Margaryta in a match that lasted 57 minutes at the Tokyo Metropolitan Gymnasium on Sunday. Margaryta, ranked 32 in the world rankings, raced to an early lead as Manika managed to collect just eight points in the first two games. The Indian then stitched longer rallies in the third game, Manika Batra which seemed to work wonders for her. She won followed it up by clinching the third game 11-7 and a nail-biter in the fourth.

Kieran Smith claimed the bronze in 3:43.94. Top seed Germany’s Henning Muhlleitner missed the podium, ranking fourth in 3:44.07. In the women’s 400m freestyle relay final, Australia grabbed a new world record in 3:29.69. The previous two records were also held by the Australians. Canada and America took the silver and bronze respectively. China broke the Asian record in 3:34.76. Yui Ohashi won the women’s 400m individual medley gold for Japan in 4:32.08. 4. Vivianne Miedema: Despite the tournament being in its initial stages, the Dutch forward has already made her presence felt by netting four goals in the Netherlands’ 10-3 win over Zambia. After Wednesday’s performance, the 25-year-old, who’s already her country’s top scorer, has a staggering record of 76 goals in 97 international appearances. If her early form continues, she may potentially lead her team singlehandedly to Olympic glory. 5. Fran Kirby: This year, she became the first woman to win the Football Writers’ Association’s Woman Footballer of the Year award for the second time. She received this honour after notching up 25 goals and 18 assists in all her outings for Chelsea, helping the London club to a record fourth FA Women’s Super League title. What makes

these accomplishments even more impressive is the fact that the 28-year-old forward had to spend six months on the sidelines after being diagnosed with a heart condition in 2019. Great Britain may have a tough road to success, but the team knows that it can count on its resilient talisman to deliver on the big stage. 6.Carli Llyod: At 39, this may be Carli Llyod’s last chance to showcase her talents on the big stage, even as she hopes to help the US team become the first women’s side to win both the World Cup and Olympic gold back-to-back. If she can’t manage to do so, the loss won’t take anything away from a glittering career that has seen Lloyd win two Olympic gold medals and two World Cups. The midfielder’s brilliance is so undeniable that even in a squad full of mega-stars, she still stands out.
Margaryta took the lead by winning the fifth game 11-8. But Manika struck back to win the sixth game, forcing the match into a decider. The 26-year-old was dominant but committed errors by losing two match points. In the end, she secured the match point to seal a hard-fought victory. Manika will now face 10th seed Sofia Polcanova of Austria. However, Sathi-
yan Gnanasekaran crashed out of the men’s singles event losing 3-4 to Hong Kong’s Lam Siu Hang, ranked 95th in the world, in a second-round match. Sathiyan, the world No. 26, took three of the first four sets before losing the next three to crash out 7-11, 11-7, 11-4, 11-5, 9-11, 10-12 and 6-11 to Hang. The match lasted an hour and three minutes.
Rowers Arjun and Arvind sail to double sculls semis at Olympics TOKYO, JUL 25 (PTI): Arjun Lal Jat and Arvind Singh on Sunday produced the best-ever Olympic performance by Indian rowers as they cruised into the men’s lightweight double sculls semifinals at the Tokyo Games. The Indian duo clocked 6:51.36 to finish third in the repechage round at the Sea Forest Waterway. “We followed exactly whatever had been told to us by our coach. The coach told us that we should try to get the best position for India,” the duo said. “It’s (rowing) not a very popular sport in India. So our coach told us that getting to the semifinals is also a big motivation for us, and we had to do our best.” Poland’s Jerzy Kowalski and Artur Mikolajczewski finished at the top with a timing of 6:43.44, followed by Spain’s Caetano Horta Pombo and Manel Balastegui, who clocked 6:45.71 in the repechage 2. While Arjun assumes the role of the bower, Arvind is the team’s stroker. The two had finished fifth in their heats on Saturday.
Arjun Jat and Arvind Singh
“This is the best ever performance by Indian rowers in the Olympics. No Indian team has ever reached the semifinals,” Rowing Federation of India president Rajlaxmi Singh Deo told PTI. “Arvind and Arjun are now among the 12 semifinalists. It can be difficult to win a medal but they will be competing in the semifinals. There will be two semifinal races of six boats
each and top three from each semifinals will reach the final,” Deo added. The event includes two rowers in a scull boat using two oars each. The long, narrow and broadly semi-circular in cross-section boats helps to reduce the drag. The maximum weight set for each male competitor is 72.5kg and the average weight cannot exceed 70 kg. The semifinals will be held on July 27.
