Therefore, we should meet the expectations of the tourists,” he added. He also urged the people of the region to discuss with their state governments, and support development of the region, assuring that the Centre would
implement all schemes with commitment. Reddy said the Centre under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi was focussed on developing the North East, and quoted Modi that “without the development of North Eastern Region, India would not move forward.” Addressing the function, deputy chief minister Y Patton, who is also the minister in-charge for roads and bridges (R&B), acknowledged government of India, ministry of DoNER for sanctioning various schemes under NESIDS. PWD (R&B) chief engineer, Er. Kahuli Sema presented the technical report of the project. The programme was chaired by principal secretary (W&H) Menukhol John while secretary (W&H) Kevekha Kevin Zehol proposed the vote of thanks. A special number was also presented by Kekhrie Ringa.

Policing in Dimapur district confronted with an unnatural front due to indeterminate & vague CFGRs
Staff Reporter
DIMAPUR, SEP 25 (NPN): Close on the heels of the September 16 Statewide closure of shops and businesses in protest against multiple taxation by NPGs and government agencies, the Dimapur police has set up a ‘District Action Plan’ to fight against rampant extortion/illegal taxation, kidnapping and other illegal and anti-social activities. Informing this at a press briefing here on Saturday, Commissioner of Po-
lice (CP) Dimapur, Rothihu Tetseo said that extortion and illegal taxation continued to be a challenge for Dimapur police, given the fact that it accounts 13% of the total number of criminal cases registered since January 1, 2020. CP attributed this to unauthorized presence of various factions of the Naga political groups, due to the prevalent cease-fire and peace talks between Centre and the NPGs, governed by the cease-fire ground rules (CFGR). CP further pointed out

However, Tetseo said that the ‘District Action Plan’ was for mulated with realistic objectives of achieving a substantial reduction in extortion/ illegal taxation cases, with optimum utilization of limited resources at hand. In order to enforce DAP at micro levels (with officers/NGOs), CP said
that Dimapur district has been divided into 39 micro sectors-- each micro sector consisting of an average of seven colonies/villages under one NGO. DIMAPUR, SEP 25 (NPN): All Ward Union M o k o k c h u n g To w n (AWUMT) on Saturday took strong exception over the move to “desanction” the North Eastern Power System Improvement Project (NERPSIP) scheme in Mokokchung district, which is being executed by the POWERGRID. In representation to state chief secretary, AWUMT president Limanungsang and general secretary Jongpongtemjen said that the Ministry of Power, Government of India had written to the state government on September 20, 2021 for “desanctioning” NERPSIP scheme, “reason being that the project which was sanctioned in 2018 could not be completed
within the stipulated schedule of December, 2021.” The ward union said they learnt that the project could not take off in time due to land issue. However, on April 29 this year, AWUMT said they met the land owner and mutually resolved the matter. Thereafter, on June 23, AWUMT said the union along with Mokokchung District Planning & Development Board (DPDB) chairman, district administration and other officials including chief engineer (power) jointly visited the site and also held thorough discussion at the DPDB meeting the same day in the presence of POWERGRID officials. Subsequently, the matter was flagged to the Power
department to take up the matter with all seriousness, to which the department assured to take up the matter in the State Land Acquisition Authority (SLAA) for purchase of the required land, it said. However, even after the lapse of over two months, AWUMT said no tangible step had been taken to address the land issue and commence the already delayed work. It said that the District Land Settlement Board had also forwarded the matter of land acquisition to the Commissioner Nagaland as resolved on July 15, 2021 in order to take it up at the State Land Acquisition Authority (SLAA) meeting for approval. PFI behind conflict in Darrang: Himanta Biswa
GUWAHATI, SEP 25 (PTI): Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Thursday claimed the Popular Front of India (PFI) was involved in violence during an eviction drive in Darrang district which saw police firing on peasants claiming two lives, including a 12-year old boy, and left over 20 injured, and sought the organisation’s ban by the central government. Sarma said his government had prepared a dossier on PFI and would be taking action against the outfit in the state. ‘’The state government has sent a dossier to the centre seeking a total ban on the PFI and we are also doing whatever needs to be done against the outfit’’, the Chief Minister said here on the sidelines of a meeting here. Mangaldoi MP and BJP national secretary Dilip Saikia had earlier on Friday alleged that ‘’third parties, including the PFI’’ could be
involved in an alleged attack on police personnel during the eviction drive but the outfit’s state President Abu Shama Ahmed had denied the allegations saying that it has no cadres in the areas where evictions were carried out and none of its leaders had visited the area. The Chief Minister claimed there were intelligence reports that six people, including a college lecturer, had collected Rs 28 lakh during the last three months from poor landless families saying that they would convince the government to stall eviction. ‘’We have the names of six people with intelligence reports that Rs 28 lakh was collected and when they could not prevent the eviction drive, they mobilised those people and created mayhem on that particular day,” Sarma said. He claimed that using the pretext of providing food to evicted people, PFI had visited the site. ‘’These details have emerged so far
Himanta Biswa Sarma
and we are sure that when a judicial inquiry begins, more explosive information will emerge’’, the chief minister said. Sarma said that he had called representatives of All Assam Minority Students’ Union (AAMSU) to his office to discuss the eviction drive and then directed them to meet the Darrang administration. ‘’My message to them was very clear-that if these people were landless, we would give them two acres of land, on condition that they do not possess any land in any other place in the state. (However) most of these people have land and
are not landless as a section of the national media has portrayed them to be’’, he claimed. AAMSU President Rejaul Karim Sarkar told reporters on Saturday however said affected people were not given any land or compensation and those evicted are now living in temporary structures without proper drinking water or sanitation facilities. The chief minister also blamed the media and claimed it had taken sides in the conflict. “The so-called national left-liberal media should stop taking sides … An aberration had occurred when a photographer behaved in an outrageous manner - he has been arrested and an inquiry is being conducted,’’ he said. The Chief Minister asserted that he wants to give a ‘’clear message that Assam cannot be cowed down. We have orders from the Gauhati High Court on several occasions to evict people from forests and
other encroached areas. You cannot occupy large tracts of forest or land belonging to indigenous people.” He said that he had offered ‘’two acres of land and also a PMAY house to the landless... I did my job and they should not have attacked the police on that day’’. Among those killed were a 12-year old boy Shaikh Farid who was returning after collecting his Aadhar card from the post office and 28-year old Moinul Haque who in a video that went viral on social media was seen shot dead by the police while a photographer, hired by the district administration to document the situation, was seen kicking, and jumping over his body. The photographer was later arrested. The Darrang district administration has so far evicted 800 families since Monday and demolished four ‘illegally’ constructed religious structures at Sipajhar.

Cong questions Shah’s silence over Assam border row, Sipajhar NEW DELHI, SEP 25 (PTI): The Congress on Saturday questioned the silence of Union Home Minister Amit Shah on the Assam firing incident and also the open shootout inside a courtroom in the national capital. Congress spokesperson Gourav Vallabh also asked whether Shah “does not have the time to resolve the issue in Assam”. Vallabh said the BJP leadership made several tall promises ahead of the Assam elections and asked where are those promises now. The Congress spokesperson said never in the country’s history has one police force fired upon the police force of another state and killed cops and the home minister is still silent, referring to the Assam-Mizoram border row. Seven people were killed and 50 injured in an exchange of fire between the police forces of the two states this July.
“The country’s home minister does not have time to visit Assam and sort out the issue through talks. He does not have time to resolve this matter. Has he also gone to America?” Vallabh asked. Commenting on the situation in Assam, the Congress spokesperson questioned why the home minister was not giving any statement when leaders of opposition, the principal opposition party leaders are asking that the central government should interfere. “Have you seen any statement by the home minister on that? In the past also we had seen that a state police of one state is fighting against the state police of another state? What is going on? Everybody is silent; nobody is making any comment on that, what is the reason for these things,” he asked. The spokesperson also talked about the eviction drive in Gorukhuti village in Assam’s Darrang
district on Thursday that turned ugly. Clashes broke out between the police and alleged encroachers resulting in the death of two persons and injuries to 20. A shocking video showing a man hitting an apparently dead person with a bullet wound on his chest and jumping over his body also surfaced after the incident, drawing widespread condemnation. The man, who was a photographer engaged by the district administration, was later arrested and a judicial probe has been ordered. Referring to the Delhi courtroom firing, the Congress spokesperson said, “The country’s law and order situation is worsening, with firing taking place inside a courtroom in the national capital, killing people. There are 10-20 rounds of firing inside a courtroom and where is the home minister. Where is his statement?”

WASHINGTON, SEP 25 (PTI): India has welcomed America’s efforts to combat climate change and its return to the Paris Agreement as Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Joe Biden held their first inperson bilateral meeting at the White House. President Biden, in his talks with Prime Minister Modi in the Oval Office of the White House, expressed
support for India’s intention to achieve a domestic goal of installing 450 GW of renewable power by 2030, according to the US-India Joint Leaders’ Statement issued after their meeting on Friday. The meeting holds importance ahead of the 26th UN Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP26) in UK’s Glasgow where leaders of nearly 200 countries will gather

to discuss way forward to tackle climate action and the updated targets will be submitted. India welcomed the US leadership on climate action and its return to the Paris Agreement, the statement said. In February, the US officially returned to the Paris climate accord, 107 days after it left at the behest of former president Donald Trump. During
their meeting, Biden also acknowledged the importance of mobilising finance for investments in renewables, storage and grid infrastructure that will guarantee clean, reliable power for millions of Indian households. Through the two main tracks of the Strategic Clean Energy Partnership (SCEP) and the Climate Action and Finance Mobilization Dialogue (CAFMD) under the US-India Climate and Clean Energy Agenda 2030 Partnership, the United States and India will accelerate clean energy development and deployment of critical technologies to advance a clean energy transition. India welcomed the United States joining the Leadership Group for Industry Transition. The 26th conference of parties (COP 26) to the United Nations Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) holds significance this year as it is expected to discuss the status of climate finance promises by developed nations to developing nations. India has time and again maintained that it is suffering because of the mistakes of others and
is not responsible for the climate change. It has also reiterated that the countries responsible for climate change should finance what they committed to and make technology available at an affordable cost. Under the Copenhagen Accord, developed countries committed to a goal of mobilising 100 billion dollar a year by 2020 to help developing countries mitigate climate change. Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav had last month said that India is committed to the UNFCCC and its Paris Agreement and had extended support to the UK, which will host the international climate conference. Under the Paris Agreement, India has three quantifiable nationally determined contributions (NDCs), which include lowering the emissions intensity of its GDP by 33-35 per cent compared to 2005 levels by 2030; increase total cumulative electricity generation from fossil free energy sources to 40 per cent by 2030 and create additional carbon sink of 2.5 to 3 billion tons through additional forest and tree cover.

that allows US companies to employ foreign workers in specialty occupations that require theoretical or technical expertise. The technology companies depend on it to hire tens of thousands of employees each year from countries like India and China. “He also spoke of the fact that many Indian professionals who work here contribute to Social Security. The return of those contributions in the United States is something that affects the number of Indian workers,” Shringla said. A fact sheet issued by the White House later said that the United States was proud to have issued a record 62,000 visas to Indian students so far in 2021. The nearly 200,000 Indian stu-
dents in the United States contribute USD 7.7 billion annually to the US economy. Celebrating the 75th anniversary of the Fulbright Programme worldwide, the programme has been bringing Americans and Indians closer together for 71 years since its launch in India. “In 2008, we welcomed India’s decision to jointly fund these fellowships with the United States, and renamed the program the Fulbright-Nehru Fellowship Program. Over 20,000 fellowships and grants have been awarded under this exchange programme, and the United States looks forward to building on these successes,” it said. “The Partnership 2020 programme continues to foster higher education cooperation to promote economic growth and technological advances. In collaboration with the University of Nebraska at Omaha, this programme funds 15 research partnerships between US and Indian universities in the fields of advanced engineering, artificial intelligence, public health, and energy, among others,” the White House said.

The Road Transport and Highways Minister was speaking at the felicitation of COVID-19 warriors in Karad city of Maharashtra’s Satara district. He said the cooperative sector should also come forward to set up medical facilities. “Once during a discussion with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, I told him about the scar-
city of ventilators. He asked me how many ventilators were there in the country, to which I replied there must be around 2.5 lakh. But he told me that there were only 13,000 ventilators when the coronavirus pandemic broke out in the country,” Gadkari said. There was lack of oxygen, beds, and other medical facilities at that time. But doctors, paramedical, nurses helped a lot in those times, he said, adding, “I appreciate their work.” Apart from the government-run hospitals, the contribution of medical facilities set up by the cooperative and private sectors was commendable, the minister said. “The publicprivate investment model in the road and infrastructure development sector can be replicated in health care and education sectors. The country needs a minimum of 600 medical colleges, 50 AIIMS-like institutions and 200 super-specialty hospitals. The government is also thinking of providing help to those social organisations that work in medical and education sectors,” Gadkari said.
KO L K AT A , S E P 2 5 (IANS): A couple of days after newly-appointed Bengal BJP President Sukanta Majumdar was allegedly manhandled by the Kolkata police during his rally with the body of slain BJP leader Durjati Saha near Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s residence here, the Union Ministry of Home Affairs on Saturday allotted ‘Z’ category security for the MP from Balurghat. Speaking to the media, Majumdar confirmed the security allotment and said, “I have received a letter from the Ministry of Home Affairs
wherein I was informed that I have been given ‘Z’ category security.” When asked whether the high security was provided because of the threat perception, Majumdar said, “That I cannot say because I have never asked for any kind of security. Even before coming here, I used to go to the market on my Scooty.” The enhancement of security is significant because on Thursday, he was seen being forcefully pulled up by the state security forces when he tried to sit in front of the vehicle that was carrying the body of Saha.
CHANDIGARH, SEP 25 (PTI): Seven new faces are likely to be inducted in the Charanjit Singh Channi-led Punjab cabinet while five ministers who were part of the Amarinder Singh-led government are expected to be dropped, sources said Saturday With the list of ministers for the new cabinet finalised, Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi Saturday met Governor Banwarilal Purohit at Raj Bhavan here around 12:30 pm. After meeting the governor, Channi told reporters the oath-taking ceremony for the new ministers will

take place at 4:30 pm on Sunday. His meeting with the governor came barely hours after he returned from Delhi having held a final round of discussion with the party high command on the cabi-
net formation. Pargat Singh, Raj Kumar Verka, Gurkirat Singh Kotli, Sangat Singh Gilzian, Amarinder Singh Raja Warring, Kuljit Nagra and Rana Gurjit Singh are likely to be included in the cabinet, according to the sources. The party is also learnt to have decided to retain Vijay Inder Singla, Manpreet Singh Badal, Brahm Mohindra, Sukhbinder Singh Sarkaria, Tript Rajinder Singh Bajwa, Arunu Chaudhary, Razia Sultana and Bharat Bhushan Ashu from the Amarinder Singh government. However, five legislators -- Rana Gur mit
Singh Sodhi, Sadhu Singh Dharamsot, Balbir Singh Sidhu, Gurpreet Singh Kangar and Sunder Sham Arora -- who were ministers in the Amarinder Singh-led cabinet are likely to be dropped, the sources said. A consensus on the names for the Channi-led cabinet was reached during his meeting with Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and other senior party members in the national capital. Channi was summoned to Delhi by the Congress high command on Friday to discuss the cabinet formation. The visit came within hours of him returning from the national capital.
to contest Goa Assembly polls, Kanhaiya Kumar, Jignesh Mevani to join Cong on Sep 28 TMC will declare CM candidate: O’Brien NEW DELHI, SEP 25 (IANS): Former JNUSU President Kanhaiya Kumar along with independent Gujarat MLA Jignesh Mevani will join Congress on September 28, sources close to the CPI leader and Mevani have confirmed. The Congress has decided to make it a high profile induction with presence of senior leader Rahul Gandhi during the joining of both the leaders. The day coincides with the birth
anniversary of Shaheed Bhagat Singh. While both the leaders have switched off their cell phones and only phones of those close to them are working. Both the leaders had met Rahul Gandhi recently and sources say that talks have been finalised between these leaders and the Congress party. The Congress wants to rope in these two leaders ahead of assembly polls and particularly Mev-
ani before Gujarat polls for their oratory and crowd pulling capabilities. Mevani is an independent MLA in Gujarat and has won election with the support of the Congress. The trio of Alpesh Thakor, Hardik Patel and Mevani was with the Congress in 2017 elections when Congress did put up a good show but could not win elections and now Congress wants to rope in Mevani ahead of polls while Alpesh has
joined the BJP. Sources in the Congress say that he has been meeting Rahul Gandhi in the past and the offer to join the party has been pending since the last Lok Sabha polls. Sources also said that during the talks in the past, Kanhaiya Kumar had emphasised on having his own team to work in Bihar in order to start a movement and then gradually take it to the national level.
PANAJI, SEP 25 (PTI): Trinamool Congress leader Derek O’Brien on Saturday said his party would be contesting the next year’s Goa Assembly polls. The par ty will announce its chief ministerial candidate soon, he added. “We are here as a serious contender against the ruling BJP,” the MP told PTI. The Mamata Banerjeeled party has no “high-com-
mand culture” and will pick credible local leaders in the coastal state, he said. Since arriving in Goa on Friday, O’Brien has been meeting representatives of civil society as well as political leaders. The state was looking for a party which would keep the BJP at bay and if there was one leader who can best Prime Minister Narendra Modi, it was Mamata Banerjee, he said.
Rohini shootout: Pleas for safety in subordinate courts ‘Legislature needs to revisit
Security high tightened at Rohini Court, a day after the shooting incident, in New Delhi, Saturday, Sept. 25, 2021. (PTI Photo/Shahbaz Khan)
NEW DELHI, SEP 25 (PTI): An application has been filed in the Supreme Court seeking directions to the Centre and the states to take immediate steps for security in subordinate courts in wake of the shootout inside a district court in Delhi on Friday that left three gangsters dead and a law intern injured. It said that gangsters and hardcore criminals may be produced from jails
through video-conferencing before the trial court instead of producing them physically. The application was filed by advocate Vishal Tiwari even as another lawyer, Deepa Joseph, moved the Delhi High Court urging it to direct authorities to take requisite measures for the safety and security of district courts in the national capital. Jailed gangster Jitender Maan alias Gogi
and two assailants of a rival gang who were posing as lawyers were killed in a shootout in Rohini district court here that also saw police fire bullets in retaliation. Chief Justice of India N V Ramana had on Friday expressed deep concern over the shootout inside the crowded courtroom here and spoken to the Delhi High Court Chief Justice D N Patel in this regard, an
apex court official had said. The application by Tiwari has been filed in the apex court in a pending plea which raised the issue of safety and security of judicial officers and advocates while referring to the alleged mowing down of District and Sessions Judge-8 of Dhanbad court, Uttam Anand, by a vehicle on July 28 in Jharkhand. While referring to the Delhi shootout, the application said such incidents are not only a threat to the judicial officers, lawyers and others present in the court premises but also to the justice delivery system. It has sought the apex court’s direction to the Centre and the states to take immediate steps and measures to ensure security in subordinate courts. “Such incidents are not only threat to our judicial officers, lawyers and people present in the court premises but it is also a threat to our justice system,” it said. It said apart from securing the judges against any threat, it is also important that court premises are secured against any attack by militants or other criminals.
laws to suit practical realities’
C U T TAC K , S E P T 2 5 (PTI): The Chief Justice of India, Justice N V Ramana Saturday said the Legislature needs to revisit laws and reform them to suit the needs of time and people so that they match “practical realities”. The CJI while inaugurating the new building of the Odisha State Legal Service Authority here, also said there is need for the executive and the legislature to work hand in hand in realising “constitutional aspirations.” He also said the judiciary has decided to launch a country-wide “robust legal awareness” mission in the upcoming week. “I emphasize, our laws must match with our practical realities. The executive has to match these efforts by way of simplifying the corresponding rules,” Justice Ramana said. He also emphasised that it was important for the Executive and Legislature to “function in unison in realising Constitutional aspirations.” The CJI noted that it is only then, the Judiciary would not be compelled to step in as a law-maker and would only be left with the duty of applying and inter-
preting laws. At the end of the day, it is the harmonious functioning of the three organs of the State that can remove procedural barriers to justice, he pointed out. Stating that the Indian Judicial system is faced with twin challenges, the CJI pointed out that the first one is that of “Indianisation of Justice delivery system”, while the second is of enabling the people to “Decode the Justice Delivery System by Raising Awareness”. Even after 74 years of Independence, traditional and agrarian societies which have been following customary ways of life, “feel hesitant to approach the courts,” he noted.

Nagaland Post VOL. XXXI NO. 292 DIMAPUR, SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 26, 2021
A
Willful default
shooting incident at Delhi on Friday morning has exposed alarming loopholes in the security system when dreaded gangster Jitendra Gogi was shot dead in a broad daylight inside Rohini courtroom by hired assassins of a rival gang. Jitendra Mann alias Gogi’s old enemy Sunil alias Tillu is lodged in Mandoli jail itself. According to various reports, the conspiracy was hatched days ago, to kill Gogi from inside Delhi’s Mandoli Jail. Tillu Tajpuria is lodged in the High-Risk Ward of Mandoli Jail and many of Tillu’s henchmen are also lodged in this jail. Police also learnt about the gang rivalry and the extreme possibility of a shootout. According to reports, Gogi was being produced to court for a hearing when the two assassins, dressed in lawyer’s cloaks whipped out pistols and pumped several bullets into the gangster. The shooters are alleged to be members of the gang led by his friend-turned-rival Sunil Maan, also known as Tillu Tajpuriya. It may be pointed out that there was heavy police security provided to the gangster as his life was under threat allegedly by the rival gang. The two assassins, in the garb of lawyers, were also killed by police while an intern was also injured. Media reports pointed out that the incident is not the first inside a courtroom in Delhi. In the recent past, there have been incidents of shooting in the Dwarka Court, a firing near the Saket Court in May 2019 and earlier in 2017, an under trial was killed after being shot inside the Rohini Court Complex. A shocking incident similar in line to the incident in Rohini Court was the killing of a Delhi Police head constable when four armed assailants open fired inside a courtroom at Karkardooma Court Complex in the year 2015. On Friday, the ease with which the two assailants entered into the court premises in the attire shows that they were well aware that it is easy to get access into the court by wearing lawyer’s attire. It is baffling that a highly reputed police like Delhi Police with highly trained manpower and led by the finest of police officers in the country, could not even prevent the most likely of incidents. If Gogi was under threat and his security cover beefed up; it is then expected that even the route inside the building which the gangster and the securitymen would be taking should be sealed. There should have been check on the identities of those who were to be inside the court room and not to speak of the normal frisking that ought to have been done. Since the lapses were too glaring, it is doubtful whether the killing could have been undertaken without the involvement of some people having connections with powerful persons. Delhi police is under the home ministry with Rakesh Asthana as commissioner of police. Such a shocking incident can happen only in Al Capone’s time. However, the fact that such killings inside courts happen in the national capital, reveals that the Central home ministry is unable to tackle law and order. Had such incident happened in any north eastern state, the Centre would have roasted the state government. Since there is suspicion of nexus between criminal dons and political mafias, it is hope the Supreme Court will order a probe over which it will monitor to unearth and expose the dirt hidden inside.
DailyDevotion The “Go” of Relationship
Whoever compels you to go one mile, go with him two. —Matthew 5:41 Our Lord’s teaching can be summed up in this: the relationship that He demands for us is an impossible one unless He has done a supernatural work in us. Jesus Christ demands that His disciple does not allow even the slightest trace of resentment in his heart when faced with tyranny and injustice. No amount of enthusiasm will ever stand up to the strain that Jesus Christ will put upon His servant. Only one thing will bear the strain, and that is a personal relationship with Jesus Christ Himself— a relationship that has been examined, purified, and tested until only one purpose remains and I can truly say, “I am here for God to send me where He will.” Everything else may become blurred, but this relationship with Jesus Christ must never be. The Sermon on the Mount is not some unattainable goal; it is a statement of what will happen in me when Jesus Christ has changed my nature by putting His own nature in me. Jesus Christ is the only One who can fulfill the Sermon on the Mount. If we are to be disciples of Jesus, we must be made disciples supernaturally. And as long as we consciously maintain the determined purpose to be His disciples, we can be sure that we are not disciples. Jesus says, “You did not choose Me, but I chose you…” (John 15:16). That is the way the grace of God begins. It is a constraint we can never escape; we can disobey it, but we can never start it or produce it ourselves. We are drawn to God by a work of His supernatural grace, and we can never trace back to find where the work began. Our Lord’s making of a disciple is supernatural. He does not build on any natural capacity of ours at all. God does not ask us to do the things that are naturally easy for us— He only asks us to do the things that we are perfectly fit to do through His grace, and that is where the cross we must bear will always come.

Post-mortem
World Peace: An approach to the concept of living together
I
n contemporary times, many organizations are talking and debating about world peace. This clearly shows that there is no peace worth its name in the world. We have seen the two World Wars. Most human beings thought that after these two World Wars, peace would prevail in the world. It is said that when atom bombs were dropped in Japan the carrier of the bomb started crying and chanting some lines of Bhagavad-Gita. What does it indicate? My humble answer is that the one who carried the atom bomb in the plane started commenting on the possible catastrophic effects of the bomb while throwing the bomb. Politicians, scholars and other leaders of public organizations thought that perhaps peace and tranquillity would prevail in the world after this unprecedented incident. It may not be out of place to state here that just the reverse is happening in the world. We are all aware of what is happening in the neighbourhood of different countries, the persistent border conflicts. My objective is not to point out or target any specific state for its gross fault. In other words, border issues among states throughout the world are day to day phenomenon. In this connection, I wish to point out the maxim, that is: how much land a human being needs? I wish to humbly point out that human being has not learnt anything from the past mistakes. If we look at the human history, we find that we have been suspecting one another and constantly indulging in perpetual conflict with each other from the beginning of our existence. The two great Indian epics tell us that cousin brothers fought among themselves for power and supremacy. The Pandavas
P
wanted only 5 villages for 5 brothers. But the Cauravas did not want to give even an inch of land without fight and war. As a result of rigid stand, battle started and all 100 brothers of Cauravas were killed. The epic of Mahabharata is a myth but it tells us very important and significant things about human nature. I may point out in this connection that the earth belongs to all human beings. Whoever comes to the world has to live in this world but frequently we humans forget these basic facts of human nature. We humans have failed to learn lesson from the two World Wars. So many international institutions and organizations have been set up to establish peace and harmony in the world but we all know what is happening in different parts of the world. Whenever we open the daily newspapers we come across conflict among countries. What could be the reason? In spite of so much writings on peace and non-violence, it seems human being has not learnt any lesson. So much development of science and technology and writings on non-violence, peace and interdependent coexistence and yet newer problems and conflict keep occurring in our world. Without mentioning any name of a country, neighbouring countries around the world create tensions and conflict over even an inch of land. It appears that we have made tremendous material progress but in the sphere of ethics and moral living, we remain stagnant till today. If we open pages of ancient history including that of India, we come across great men and women like prophets, seers, saints and sages. What they have been saying is relevant even today. In the context of In-
dia, Vedas and Upanishads have been sources of morality, spirituality and religion. By religion, I do not mean sectarianism or dogmas with rituals. Upanishads tell us to live together and not to indulge in conflict. “Sahanau...avatu” (Let us live together, eat together and flourish together). But I am sorry to say we have forgotten all this. The question is what should we do? How to protect not only human beings but also other living beings? First of all, I wish to suggest that groups of neighbouring states should come together and find solution to their border problems with open mind dialogue. It may not be out of place to mention in this connection that the border problems of India, Pakistan and China are persisting for many years. What could be the reason or reasons? No human problem is insoluble. We should have sincere intention and determination to solve our problems. In spite of so much development of science and technology is not going to guarantee humanity the eradication of poverty, disease and persisting border conflicts among countries. Interference by powerful countries into the internal affairs of weak and small countries is still common for the vested interests. What is needed is to come together and solve our problem with open mind and heart and help each other. Epics have been written to solve human problem. But we have not been careful. Therefore, what is necessary and needful at this juncture all nations should come together and sort out problems. It is a fact that United Nations and many other international bodies have been created for the purpose of resolution of conflicts and living together
peaceably among countries of the world. But I am sorry to say that we have not been successfully taking and using these bodies. I wish to say in this connection that all religions and all societies have emphasized the following: It is human being who is responsible for human problems. Almost all traditions in the world have emphasized peaceful coexistence. It may be pointed out in this connection that in the contemporary world science and technology have developed very fast. As a matter of fact, we have made astounding discoveries and inventions in science and technology and other branches of knowledge. But what has happened? As a matter of fact, we are suspicious of each other. This mutual suspicion is clearly seen from the defence expenditure of almost all countries. It may not be an exaggeration to say that almost all countries spend a good portion of their budgets on defence. Poverty, inequality, illiteracy and diseases either go on increasing or remain stagnant and yet we never cut down on the expenditure for defence. This is really paradoxical. Ancient traditions of almost all countries in the world lay emphasis on peaceful coexistence and inter-dependent living. In ancient Indian tradition that is to say Vedas, Upanishads and BhagavadGita have emphasized love for fellow beings including animals and cosmic wellbeing. But unfortunately we have forgotten such good virtues and values instead retained some wasteful and meaningless rituals from our ancient traditions. In Upanishads, it has been stated that we should live together and think together. BhagavadGita has grown out of Vedas and Upanishads. Seeing in this light, it can be said that
the ancient Indian philosophical system laid emphasis on peaceful coexistence. But in due course of time we have forgotten all these values and ideals. In modern times Jiddu Krishnamurthy laid emphasis on attentive introspection and inquiry on all traditions and peaceful coexistence. But I am sorry to say that we have forgotten Jiddu Krishnamurthy’s philosophical ideas and including those of great saints and seers. The messages of Confucius, Lao-tsii, Mahavira, Buddha, Jesus and Mohammad are equally important. However, in due course of time these messages of great saints and seers we have forgotten. As a result, we have mutual suspicion, hatred and animosity throughout the world today. This can be overcome by following traditional ancient good values of all cultures. I am not saying only ancient Indian tradition contain these values. In other words, almost all religions and philosophical traditions advocate and contain similar values. We have polluted our air, water and land. How to go about it? How to protect and save mother earth? I wish to suggest that we should make judicious use of science and technology. Science as a pursuit of the knowledge of the universe is alright. Technology is the outcome of science. But creating and designing technology for destructive purposes has made our existence vulnerable to the point of possible complete wiping out of life on earth. This statement may sound obtuse and unacceptable but this is not at all an impossible prediction by the ongoing current state of affairs in the world. How to solve this riddle? Perhaps we should consume that much which is necessary to keep body and mind together healthy. Over-
consumption or conspicuous consumption has been creating endless problems for us all. This is the reason why Jainism, Buddhism, Christianity, Islam, etc. have emphasized curtailment of consumption. It is gradually becoming evident and clear that overconsumption has created problems of the world. Perhaps Jainism and Buddhism have emphasized this point more than any other traditions. Some scholars are of the view that even Bhagavad-Gita is a storehouse of this kind of knowledge and wisdom. It is imperative to point one historical fact from India. Ashoka king of Pataliputra was a very cruel and ambitious man who invaded Orissa (Kalinga). In this war approximately 100,000 people were killed and an equal number of people were injured. While one Buddhist monk Upagupta was wandering, he met king Ashoka after the war and asked him what he had achieved in the war. To this question king Ashoka was baffled and felt greatly disturbed and later he embraced Buddhism and gave up all wars. He was converted to the life of nonviolence. As a consequence he sent his son and daughter to other places to preach non-violence and peace. This is not a mere story but historical fact which is evidenced by the presence and popularity of Buddhism all over the world today. I wish to suggest that religious values and morality should be an integral part of our educational program. Perhaps it will go a long way to change human being. Ancient moral values are in sorry state of affairs. We are losing day by day. (To be concluded) By Xavier P Mao, Department of Philosophy, NEHU, Shillong
Nature’s call for ‘Green Building’ revolution
eople spend major part of their life time indoor i.e. inside the buildings, which may be their homes, offices, hospitals, shops, factories, educational and other places. The time varies from 60 to 90 percent depending upon the nature of jobs and livings. According to UNEP, these buildings are a major source of carbon emissions (nearly 39%) causing global warning. Depleting natural resources, rapid industrialization and urbanization have led a negative impact on the environment and life-cycle. To tackle this source of global warming, “Green Building” concept has evolved. A Green Building is one which uses less water, optimizes energy efficiency, conserves natural resources, generates less wastes & pollutions and provides healthier space for its occupants as compared to a conventional building. A green building in its design & construction minimizes negative impacts. It is based on “Triple Bottom Line (TBL)” benefits, which accounts for social and environmental performances in addition to financial performance. The concept is also termed as 3P approach – People, Planet and Profits. In India, as per census 2011, nearly 31.16 % population are living in urban areas. The government had informed Lok Sabha that by 2050, nearly 60% of population will live in cities as India’s rate of urbanization is dramatic. There has been increase in nearly 700% commercial energy consumption in last four decades and there is water shortage of nearly 225 million liter per day (mld) in major Indian cities. World
Wildlife Fund (WWF) survey report reveals that, 100 cities, including 30 in India, may face acute water shortage by 2050. In Indian context, a Green Building construction contains, as its components, all Panch-bhootas (5 manifestations of nature), i.e. Prithvi (Bhumi, earth)- Sustainable sites & materials, Apas (Jal, water)- Water efficiency, Agni (Fire)- Energy efficiency, Aakash (Space)- Daylight & atmosphere, and Vayu (Air)- Indoor environmental quality & pollution measures. Prithvi- Material Efficiency Materials for construction should be obtained from natural, renewal sources managed in a sustainable manner. It can be obtained locally to reduce the embedded energy cost of transportation or salvaged from reclaimed materials at nearby sites. Materials are assessed at their life cycle analysis (LCA) in terms of their embedded energy, durability, recycled contents, minimum wastes and their ability to be recycled. In-fill development, that increases density, is inherently better than building on undeveloped (Greenfield) sites. Mixeduse development, in which residential and commercial uses are intermingled, can bring down automobile use and help to create healthy communities. Apas- Water Management In green buildings, water use is minimised through water efficient appliances, self-closing or spray tapes, low flush toilets or waterless compositing toilets. Use of potable water is discouraged in non-potable applications
such as landscaping or indoor plumbing needs. Rainwater and Greywater (i.e. water emanating from sinks, showers, bath tubs or cloth washers) catchment systems are installed, which recycle such water for toilet flushing & irrigation purposes. Due to urbanization, infiltration of rain water into sub-soil has decreased and recharging of ground water diminished, so “Rain water harvesting” is essential for a building. Rain water may be stored on surface for future use or may recharge to groundwater. Agni- Energy Efficiency Green building incorporates energy efficient lighting, low energy appliances and renewal energy sources such as solar panels and wind turbines. The passive solar design, high levels of insulation and energy efficient windows bring down the heating as well as cooling cost of the building. Passive solar power design is a part of the building itself and have heat absorbing surface materials and strategic placement of windows. It employs sunshine to heat, cool and light the building without mechanical and electrical devices. In this design, the building should be elongated on east-west axis and its south face should receive sunlight during heating seasons. Interior spaces, requiring most light as well as heating & cooling, should be along south face of the building and less used space on the north face. The two primary elements are south facing glass and thermal mass to absorb, store & distribute heat. Compact Fluorescent Lights (CFL) are energy savers, as incandescent bulbs use only 10% of energy into
light & rest 90% produces just heat. Actually active solar power panels would be more effective and produce sufficient energy requirement of the house as India has enormous scope of renewal energy. But its upfront installation costs are high and available equipments are of poor quality & short life, which discourages the common people. The government should give emphasis for research on renewal energy, particularly solar energy, so that the good quality equipments be available at optimum rate to all sections of the society which ultimately will aid in reducing greenhouse gas emission. Aakash- Daylight Harvesting Natural daylight design is the way to collect and utilize natural daylight in the interior of the building, when available, to reduce the need for energy-consuming artificial lighting. Green buildings are designed to maximize that light and distribute it effectively deeper into the building. A common design of daylight harvesting uses passive devices known as “Light shelves” to direct daylight back up and further
into a space by bouncing it off the ceiling. The light shelf may be polished or reflective, and the ceiling must be of a light colour with good reflective quality. This method of providing “indirect” natural light delivers a good quality of light – diffuse and glare-free – that is superior to direct daylight and especially direct sunlight. Natural light is more pleasant, healthful and psychologically beneficial than artificial light. Daylight harvesting can reduce energy consumption and costs of building lighting by over 25%. Vayu- Health Concerns Non-toxic, ethical & sustainable materials should be used to improve the indoor air quality and to lessen the rate of asthma, allergy and sick building syndrome. These materials are emission free, have low VOC content and are moisture resistant to deter moulds, spores & other microbes. Indoor air quality is improved through proper ventilation system and use of materials controlling humidity. Plantation is also an important ingredient for green buildings depending upon the available space. In case of limited space in
the house, Tulsi, Ghritkumari (Aloe Vera) & other herbal/medicinal plants in flowerpots would be a better solution. In foreign countries, the “Green Building” concept is gaining momentum. In India too, it needs to be popularized through enacting proper laws as well as community involvement. In first phase, all government buildings as well as manufacturing and construction industry sectors should adopt this concept and then by popularizing its benefits with sufficient proof, people should be encouraged to adopt this concept in their houses. Life on earth is secure so long as nature is pure. So nature must be conserved, restored and used sustainably while simultaneously meeting other global societal goals through urgent and concerted efforts. For fostering transformative changes, “Green Building” concept is the pivotal solution. Er. Prabhat Kishore (The author is a technocrat & academician. He holds Master in Engineering from M.N. 10-hour load shedding not acceptable
Sir,
The supply of electricity of late has been erratic and shoddy in Dimapur. There are many of us working on our laptops from home and a 10-hour load shedding at a stretch means loss of money for many us as our laptops run out of power. When we are struggling to stay afloat after the prolonged lockdown has hit our finances badly, the least the government can give its citizens is steady supply of electricity which is something very basic. This is indeed very disappointing. Khekaho Zhimo, Dimapur. Bharat Bandh on Sep 27: Bank Terrorism a tool to change state structure: DM union, political parties to join strike armed forces to safeguard our national security interests,” he added. Singh said that while the conventional threat remains, the “grey-zone” threats necessitate the adoption of an “all of government” approach with all elements of state power coming together to anticipate and mitigate future challenges. The defence minister also talked about the power of knowledge, saying it allows us to understand the historical, social, geopolitical and economic realities of a country and a region. “It tells us about the circumstances that led to the recent developments in Afghanistan,” he said. “Knowledge and wisdom have been held as the highest attributes in our society. And those who have possessed these, have guided our destiny as a civilisation and as a country,” he said. “The quest for the qualities displayed by Vidur and Shri Krishna remains inherent to our learning. Similarly, we have been guided by the role played by Kautilya in the court of Chandragupta Maurya,” he added.
NEW DELHI, SEP 25 (AGENCIES): The Samyukt Kisan Morcha (SKM), the umbrella body of over 40 farm unions leading the farmers’ agitation against the Centre’s three farm laws, has called for nationwide strike-Bharat Bandh on 27 September, the day their ongoing protest completes 10 months. The bandh will be held from six in the morning to four in the evening during which all government and private offices, educational and other institutions, shops, industries and commercial establishments as well as public events and functions will be closed throughout the country. However, all emergency establishments and essential services, including hospitals, medical stores, relief and rescue work and people attending to personal emergencies will be exempted. The bandh will be enforced in a voluntary and peaceful manner, the SKM has assured. Bank officers’ union extends support: The All India Bank Officers’ Con-
federation (AlBOC) has extended its support to the bandh. It has requested the government to have dialogue with the farmers on their demands and rescind the three laws at the centre of standoff. The confederation said that its affiliates and state units will join in solidarity with the protest actions of the farmers all over the country on Monday. The union questioned the Centre’s plan of doubling farmers’ income by 2022 by citing the NSS Land and Livestock holdings of Households and Situation Assessment of Agricultural Households, 2018-19 report released earlier this month. The average outstanding loan per agricultural household has increased to Rs. 74,121 in 2018 from Rs. 47,000 in 2013. The growing indebtedness of agricultural households reflects deep farm distress, it union said. Taking pride in the unique achievement, which he claimed no other governments in the Indian subcontinent has delivered, the Chief Minister assured to meet the people once every three months, with a list of achievements, to inform them about his government’s progress. “Of the 505 promises, 202 assurances were delivered by my government within 4 months. Of all the governments in the Indian subcontinent, such a pace of implementation can only be attributed to the DMK government,” he said in a video message posted on his twitter site. This achievement, he said should not be viewed as a momentary acceleration.

“Today, there is widespread realisation amongst all responsible nations, towards a common understanding and the need to come together against this common menace,” he said referring to terrorism. The defence minister said reverberations of the events in Afghanistan are being felt in the region and beyond. “The recent events in Afghanistan have reinforced the reality of our times. The only certainty about evolving geopolitics is its uncertainty. Changes in state boundaries may not be as frequent today,” he said. “However, the fast-

“This is how we perform and will continue to do so, every single day. Will meet you once every 3 months to let you know of the progress we made with the list of achievements,” Stalin said. The CM said he would meet the people not as someone who takes them for granted thinking he will have to face them only after 5 years. “It is you and my conscience that drives me. You order. I am waiting to deliver,” he said. Stalin said he has taken charge of Chief Ministership because of people’s votes. “Each and every vote that was cast, serve as a strong base for me to be in Fort St. George. Each one
transforming structure of states and the influence that external powers can have on it is clearly evident. These events raise questions regarding the very role of power politics and the use of terrorism as a tool to change state structures and behaviour,” he added. The defence minister said that there is a lesson to be learnt from whatever has happened in Afghanistan. “When these events are viewed, it is tempting to believe that terrorism, fear, medieval thoughts and actions, discrimination drawn on the basis of gender, practices that are seeped in inequal-

He also expressed pride that his government was safeguarding the trust that the people have “invested in us.” “You have voted us. And we have kept most of our promises. Hence, I am talking to you, brimming with pride... presenting the DMK’s election manifesto, I said as Thalaivar Kalaignar (his father and late Chief Minister M Karunanidhi) always says, ‘we say what we do, and do as we say’,” Stalin said. In just 4 months after assuming office the DMK government delivered upon most of the promises. Listing some of the achievements, he said on May 7, within a few hours of assuming office he signed 5 important files including Coronavirus relief of Rs 4,000 for all 2.09 crore rice ration cardholders, reduction of Aavin milk prices etc.

ALIGARH (UP), SEP 25 (PTI): Azad Samaj Party national president Chandrashekhar Azad has threatened to begin an indefinite protest if the Uttar Pradesh government fails to fulfil its promises to the family of a 19-year-old woman from Hathras who was gangraped and assaulted last year leading to her death. Azad, who had visited the family of the woman in Hathras earlier this week, said, “Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath’s promises made a year back of providing financial support to the family, including job and housing, have become a cruel joke for the family.” Azad met Aligarh Divisional Commissioner Gaurav Dayal who, he said, “assured that the promised assistance to the family would be given within one week.” “We will begin an indefinite dharna at the Aligarh divisional commissioner’s office after 10 days if these assurances are not fulfilled and justice is not given to the family,” he told reporters here on Friday. The woman died at a hospital in Delhi in September last year, days after being assaulted and raped by four men.

He also referred to India’s security challenges of attempts to change status quo along the northern border with China and crossborder terrorism along the western frontier. “We are faced with belligerence on our land borders challenging the statusquo, cross border support to terrorism, and increasing efforts to counter our goodwill and outreach in our neighbourhood,” he said. “While it (India) is totally committed to peace and goodwill amongst all nations, it has shown its steely resolve that threats to its internal and external security will no longer be tolerated,” Singh said. “From a security perspective, the nation and our military are acutely aware that the future military strategies and responses will need proactive synergy amongst all elements of our

Currently, CoWin certificates mention the beneficiary’s age based on the year of birth besides other details. The new feature is being introduced in compliance with the WHO norms and likely to be available from next week. “It has been decided that a new feature will be added to the CoWin under which those who are fully vaccinated and want to travel abroad will have full date of birth on their vaccination certificates,” an official source said. UK’s refusal to recognise Covishield, London has included the vaccine in its updated international travel advisory. However, Indian travellers vaccinated with two doses of Covishield would still have to undergo 10 days of quarantine in the UK notwithstanding the amendment, UK officials had clarified on Wednesday saying the inclusion of the vaccine would not make much of a difference. “We’re clear Covishield is not a problem. The UK is open to travel and we’re already seeing a lot of people going from India to the UK, be it tourists, business people or students,” British High Commissioner Alex Ellis had said in a statement on Wednesday. “We have been having detailed technical discussions regarding certification, with the builders of the CoWin app and the NHS app, about both apps. They’re happening at a rapid pace, to ensure that both countries mutually recognise the vaccine certificates issued by each other,” he had said.
NEW DELHI, SEP 25 (PTI): A group of parents and school teachers on Saturday staged a protest outside Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s residence here, and demanded reopening of schools for students of primary section and classes 6-8. The Delhi government had clarified that no student would be forced to attend physical classes and the consent of parents would be mandatory. RC Jain, president of the Delhi State Public Schools Management Association (DPSMA) said the government had said they would analyse the situation after reopening of schools for Classes 9-12 and then decide on reopening further.
MUMBAI, SEP 25 (PTI): Senior BJP leader Devendra Fadnavis on Saturday said ups and downs are part of democracy and hoped the BJP would get another opportunity to form its government in Maharashtra again. Addressing a gathering of Mathadi workers in Navi Mumbai to commemorate the 88th birth anniversary of labour leader late Annasaheb Patil, the former chief minister called for a speedy resolution of issues concerning head-loaders. “We will again get an opportunity to come to power. Ups and downs are part of democracy, “ he said. Fadanvis said the issues of Mathadi workers would have been resolved had his government got more time. The Sena-led Maha Vikas Aghadi government came to power after the Assembly polls in October 2019. “Now, this government has the opportunity to resolve the problems of Mathadi workers. I am confident that the issues will be resolved. Even if the issues

Congress spokesperson Gourav Vallabh said the Congress party and all its workers will support the Bandh. “We demand that the due process of discussion with the farmers should be initiated because they are sitting on the borders of Delhi for last more than nine months...” Former Bihar deputy CM and RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav has also extended his support to farmers’ call for Bharat Bandh on September 27. In a tweet, Tejashwi said that in the meeting of the top leaders of the grand alliance parties held at the residence, it was unanimously decided to participate and support the Bharat Bandh. Kerala’s ruling LDF has also called for a statewide hartal on 27 September to express solidarity with the farmers. The Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI) has extended its support to SKM’s call for Bharat Bandh.

Union Labour and Employment Minister Bhupender Yadav and several other Mathadi leaders, along with BJP leaders from Navi Mumbai, were present at the function. Fadnavis requested the Union minister to resolve the issue related to exemptions granted under section 194C of the Income Tax Act, which is not addressed in the new IT portal.

NEW DELHI, SEP 25 (PTI): The developments in Afghanistan raised questions about the role of power politics and the use of terrorism as a tool to change state structures and behaviour, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said on Saturday. Without mentioning the Taliban, Singh said the world is witnessing the destabilising effects of terror and the especially dangerous precedence of violent radical forces attempting to gain legitimacy by creating “new normal”. In an address at the National Defence College, he said India’s actions in Balakot and Galwan were clear signals to all “aggressors” that any attempt to threaten its sovereignty will be given a “swift and befitting” response. He said the turmoil caused in the region has been brought about by “aggressive designs” and the active support to non-state players by irresponsible states, seen as a clear reference to Pakistan. Singh said that there has been a growing realisation now of India’s concerns over Pakistan’s support to radical and terror groups.

NEW DELHI, SEP 25 (AGENCIES): The regional rural bank (RRB) employees are going to observe a oneday strike on September 27 opposing the government’s plan to divest its 50% share in each of the rural banks in favour of their respective sponsor banks. According to Economic Times, the employee unions are instead demanding formation of a national rural regional bank and delinking of it with any sponsor bank. The union flag bearers are of the view that there has always been conflicts of interest between mainstream commercial banks and the RRBs they sponsor. India has 43 RRBs with a network of around 22,000 branches mostly in the hinterlands to ensure banking facilities for farmers and artisans. These banks collectively employ one lakh people. The central government holds 50% in each of the RRBs while their respective sponsor banks hold 35%.

UN, SEP 25 (IANS): Four separate sparsely-attended protests were held outside the UN on Saturday as Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the United Nations General Assembly. The groups were separated from each other in enclosures put up with police barriers, advocating different causes. The biggest group of them was that of about 100 Khalistan supporters waving yellow flags and carrying portraits of Simranjit Singh Mann, the president of the Shiromani Akali Dal (Amritsar). The organisers of the other three protests disowned the Khalistanis and said they were not associated with them, pointing to the barriers separating them from that group. One of the groups was the Indian National Overseas Congress, which supports the Congress in India and was protesting against what they said were human
rights violations. Another was a protest organised by a local gurdwara in support of the farmers’ agitation in India focused solely on the agriculturists’ issues. They stationed themselves far from the Khalistanis and an organiser said that they did not have anything to do with that protest and distinguished themselves with green turbans. The Hindus for Human Rights (HHR) organised yet another protest that was sandwiched between the Congress and Khalistani protests. An organiser said that they were not associating themselves with the Khalistanis and their enclosed barrier next to that group’s was assigned by the police. HHR protested against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), the National Register of Citizens (NRC) and other laws and regulations, as well as what they
called human rights violations and detention of activists in India. T h e y we r e j o i n e d by a representative of the New York State Council of Churches, a protestant organisation that also lists the World Council of Churches among its members. Its executive director, Peter Cook, a protestant pastor who said he had been deported from India, asserted that his organisation opposed the CAA even though it gave citizenship rights to Christians fleeing persecution, because it “pits Christians against Muslims”. The Khalistani protesters, who were not allowed by the police to demonstrate outside India’s mission to the UN, drove past it in cars flying their flags and raising slogans. Supporters of Kashmiri separatists and Pakistanis, who held protests in the previous years, were not seen this time.
NEW DELHI, SEP 25 (IANS): With his administration facing multiple challenges at home and abroad, US President Joe Biden’s job approval rating has fallen sharply in the past two months, says a research by Pew Research Center. Fewer than half of US adults (44%) now approve of the way Biden is handling his job as president, while 53% disapprove. This marks a reversal in Biden’s job ratings since July, when a 55% majority approved of his job performance and 43% disapproved. Biden receives his least positive assessments for being mentally sharp. Currently, 43% say this describes Biden very or fairly well, an 11-point decline since March. Positive evaluations of several of Bide’s personal traits and characteristics have shown similar decreases. Compared with March, fewer adults say Biden cares about people like them, and fewer describe him as standing up for his beliefs, honest, a good role model and mentally sharp. About half (51%) are very or somewhat confident in his handling of the coronavirus outbreak, but that is down from 65% in March. The shares expressing confidence in Biden’s handling of economic policy, foreign policy and immigration policy also have declined. Biden continues to draw less confidence for unifying the country than on dealing with specific issues; only about a third (34%) are confident he can bring the country closer together, a 14 percentage point decline since March.
Suicide attack kills 8 in Somali capital MOGADISHU, SEP 25 (AGENCIES): A car bomb exploded at a checkpoint near Somalia’s presidential palace on Saturday, killing eight people, police said, as the Al-Shabaab jihadist group claimed responsibility for the attack. “We have confirmed that eight people most of them civilians died and seven others wounded in the car bomb blast,” district police chief Mucawiye Ahmed Mudey told reporters. The bombing took place within a kilometre of Villa Somalia, the presidential palace, News 18 reported. The Al-Shabaab group claimed responsibility in a brief statement. “The Mujahideen carried (out) a martyrdom operation targeting the main security checkpoint of the presidential palace. There were commanders and officials from the apostates who stayed (in) the area when the attack occurred.” The jihadist group controlled the capital until 2011 when it was pushed out by African Union troops, but it still holds territory in the countryside and launches frequent attacks against government and civilian targets in Mogadishu and elsewhere.
LO N D O N, S E P 2 5 (AGENCIES): German Chancellor Angela Merkel has backed her centre-right party’s candidate Armin Laschet to succeed her, in an unusually tight poll campaign. In a CDU rally in Mr Laschet’s home town of Aachen, Mrs Merkel praised him as a “bridgebuilder who will get people on board”. The election is too close to call, with polls putting the centre-right almost neck and neck with the centre-left SPD. Mrs Merkel has dominated German politics for 16 years as chancellor. Mrs Merkel had vowed to avoid the campaign for Sunday’s election, but her CDU-CSU alliance has lost what was a comfortable lead in the polls and is now trailing just behind the SPD (Social Democrats) - the junior partners in the current coalition government. The SPD’s success is largely attributed to its candidate, current Finance Minister Olaf Scholz, who exudes the same understated calm many have admired in Angela Merkel, says the

On Friday, tens of thousands of young activists marched throughout the country to demand greater action to tackle global warming. Climate change has been a central theme in the election campaign. Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg told crowds in Berlin that no political party was doing nearly enough to fight the climate crisis. The vote in Europe’s biggest economy, which stands at the heart of the European Union, is be-
ing closely watched by allies on the continent and around the world. Germans are set to elect members of the lower house of the federal parliament, the Bundestag, made up of at least 598 seats, and usually more. Some 60.4 million Germans over the age of 18 are eligible to vote. Although the winning party becomes clear on the night, the make-up of the next government is only known once the winner is able to form an absolute majority in parliament with one or two other parties, meaning Germany’s new leader will not be known immediately.
Myanmar monks march against military junta YANGON, SEP 25 (AFP): Scores of pro-democracy Buddhist monks took to the streets of Myanmar’s second-biggest city Saturday, rallying against the military coup in demonstrations that coincided with the 14th anniversary of previous clergyled mass protests. Myanmar has been in turmoil and its economy paralysed since February when the military ousted Aung San Suu Kyi’s civilian government, ending a ten-year experiment with democracy. Around the country, an anti-junta resistance has taken root, prompting the military to unleash a brutal crackdown on dissent. More than 1,100 civilians have been killed and 8,400 arrested, according to a local monitoring group. Historically, monks in predominantly Buddhist Myanmar have been seen as a supreme moral authority, organising communities and at times mobilising opposition to the military regimes. But the coup has exposed a schism in the monkhood,

with some prominent clerics giving the generals their blessing and others supporting the protesters. On Saturday, dozens of monks in their bright orange and crimson robes marched through the streets of Mandalay with flags and banners and threw colourful streamers in the air. “Monks who love the truth stand on the side of the people,” a protest leader told AFP. The monks chanted for the release of political prisoners including mem-
bers of Aung San Suu Kyi’s political party, which won a landslide in last November’s election. Some monks carried upside down alms bowls -- ordinarily used to collect food donations from the community -- in a symbol of protest to reject the junta regime, which calls itself the State Administration Council. “ We h ave t o t a k e risks... to protest as we can be arrested or shot at any point. We are not safe to live in our monasteries any-
more,” a 35-year-old monk told AFP. In 2007, Buddhist monks led huge demonstrations nationwide against the previous military junta regime -- an uprising that kicked off after a sudden hike in fuel prices. The “Saffron Revolution” posed a severe legitimacy crisis for the then 35-year-old dictatorship, which responded with brutal crackdowns that killed at least 31 people and saw hundreds of monks defrocked and arrested.
Taliban hang dead body in Afghan city’s main square KABUL, SEP 25 (AP): The Taliban hanged a dead body from a crane in the main square of Herat city in western Afghanistan, a witness said Saturday, in a gruesome display that signalled a return to some of the Taliban’s methods of the past. Wazir Ahmad Seddiqi, who runs a pharmacy on the side of the square, told The Associated Press that four bodies were brought to the square and three bodies were moved to other squares in the city to be displayed.
Seddiqi said the Taliban announced in the square that the four were caught taking part in a kidnapping and were killed by police. It was not immediately clear if the four were killed in a firefight with police or after their arrest. There was no immediate comment from the Taliban. UNITED NATIONS, SEP 25 (IANS): While addressing the UN General Assembly (UNGA), several world leaders have reflected on the present situation in Afghanistan following the South Asian country’s takeover by the Taliban after the US withdrew its troops after 20 years. In his address on Friday, German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier said the failure in Afghanistan shows military strength alone does not work, reports Xinhua news agency. “Militar y strength without the will to forge understanding, without the courage to engage in diplomacy, does not make the world more peaceful,” he told the General Debate of the 76th session of the UNGA. “We need strength at the negotiating table just as we need strength in defense.” Describing the fall of Kabul as a turning point in Afghanistan, he said: “We achieved our goal of defeating those who wrought horrendous terror on this city (of New York) 20 years ago.

Hubble’s new ‘molten Einstein Can eating healthy ward off infection, death from Covid? ring’ image prompts new research N
T
he Hubble Space Telescope, an international cooperation between NASA and the ESA (European Space Agency), in December 2020 released a photo a striking example of a deepspace optical phenomenon dubbed an “Einstein ring”. The observation sparked new research. The image showcased a remote galaxy that is greatly magnified and distorted by the effects of gravitationally warped space. The object, GALCLUS-022058s, is located in the southern hemisphere constellation of Fornax (the Furnace). The image was nicknamed the “Molten Ring”, which alludes to its appearance and host constellation. Further, the object’s unusual partial ring-like appearance can be explained by a phenomenon called gravitational lensing, which

causes light shining from a faraway galaxy to be warped by the gravity of an object between its source and the observer. This effect was first theorised by Albert Einstein in 1912, and later worked into his theory of general relativity, the scientists said. “This Hubble picture exemplifies the fact that the universe is a vast stage for grand illusions. Albert Einstein realised this a century ago as he formulated his law of general relativity,”
Hubble said in a statement. Using the picture, astronomers measured the galaxy’s distance, 9.4 billion light-years, when the universe was less than half its present age, placing the galaxy at the peak epoch of star formation in cosmic evolution. “This was a time when the universe was going through a ‘baby boom’, forming thousands of stars at a prolific rate. The magnified image of the galaxy gives astronomers a close-
up glimpse into the distant past,” Hubble added. To derive the physical properties of the galaxy, astronomers had to precisely model the effects of the lensing on the galaxy’s image. “The detection of molecular gas, of which new stars are born, allowed us to calculate the precise redshift and thus gives us confidence that we are truly looking at a very distant galaxy,” said Nikolaus Sulzenauer, PhD student at the Max Plank Institute for Radio Astronomy in Germany, in a statement. Furthermore, the team determined the galaxy’s magnification factor to be 20, which effectively makes the Hubble Space Telescope’s observing capability equivalent to that of a 48-metre telescope. This is larger than the currently planned extremely large telescopes. (IANS)
early one-third of coronavirus cases could have been avoided if people had a healthy diet that includes lots of fruit and vegetables, claims a new study. While getting vaccinated and wearing a mask indoors and in crowded spaces is paramount, the research, published in the journal Gut, suggests that eating properly may reduce the risk of contracting Covid-19, the Jerusalem Post reported. The study, led by researchers from Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, showed that people who had a healthier diet had a 9 per cent lower risk of contracting the virus compared to people who ate a poorer diet. Those who ate healthier were 41 per cent less likely to develop severe symptoms. Although doctors have stated that metabolic conditions including obesity and Type 2 diabetes can cause severe coronavirus complications, this study
is among the first to add nutrition to the equation, the report said. Previous studies have suggested that poor nutrition is a widespread trait among groups disproportionately affected by the epidemic, but data on the link between diet and the risk of getting the virus and then developing severe symptoms is lacking, said study editor Jordi Marino, a doctoral student and instructor at Harvard Medical School. The team analysed data collected on 592,571 people from the US and the UK between March and December 2020. Each participant completed a survey of their dietary habits, with study authors scoring people’s “diet quality,” with an emphasis on fruit and vegetable consumption. During the follow-up period, 31,831 participants developed Covid-19. The researchers also observed a cumulative link between poor nutrition, increased socioeconomic
deprivation and Covid-19 risk. People who live in poor neighbourhoods and who rely heavily on fast food are much more susceptible to the virus. Models estimate that nearly a third of virus cases would have been avoided if one of these two conditions didn’t exist, explained Marino.
The researchers called for making healthy, plantbased foods more available and affordable to help advance the end of the epidemic. “Our findings are a call for governments and those who develop protocols to prioritize healthy eating and welfare with influential policies,” Marino said. (IANS)

sexually harassing former boss
A
former ABC News executive accused CNN anchor Chris Cuomo of sexually harassing her, describing in an essay published on Friday in the New York Times how he grabbed her buttocks at a colleague’s farewell party in 2005. Shelley Ross had been Cuomo’s boss when he worked at ABC, a role she had just left when Cuomo embraced her at the party in New York City, according to the essay. “I can do this now that you’re no longer my boss,”
Ross quotes Cuomo as telling her after he gripped her in a bear hug and moved one hand down to “firmly grab and squeeze the cheek of my buttock.” Ross wrote that she pushed him away, and Cuomo then noticed her husband was behind her, watching. Earlier this
year, Cuomo was forced to apologize to CNN viewers for giving advice to the staff of his brother, Andrew Cuomo, who at the time was facing calls to resign as governor of New York after multiple women accused the powerful politician of sexual harassment. Chris Cuomo said it was inappropriate for him to advise on the scandal while working as a CNN journalist. In a statement, Cuomo acknowledged the 2005 episode with Ross, saying it was not sexual in nature.
Twitter shows off new concepts for filtering, limiting replies
M
icro-blogging site Twitter is working to limit the toxic replies users can get on its website by offering tools that allow them to be more proactive in preventing them from going through. In the future, those tools could include a feature that lets you filter potentially offensive replies and another that lets you limit potentially unwelcome accounts from replying, Engadget reported on Saturday. Twitter Senior
Product Designer Paula Barcante has released a sneak peek of the features, which are merely concepts at the moment, to seek input from users. Barcante said Twitter will ask you if you’d like to switch on those controls if it detects potentially harmful replies to your tweets. If your reply filter is on, Twitter won’t show you or anyone else, except the user who wrote the response, the harmful tweets it detects. If you decide to limit unwelcome accounts, users who’ve recently shown patterns of breaking rules won’t be able to reply to your tweets at all. (IANS)

(VYBK) on Saturday and set up a last-four clash with FC Goa on Wednesday. Wungngayam Muirang, Leon Augustine, and Namgyal Bhutia struck for BFC while Lallawmkima and Vibin T. V. struck for the Greens, both
incidentally via penalties. Army Green created pressure early on and were rewarded for that as Lallawmkima scored from the spot in the 9th minute to give them the lead. However, the Naushad Moosa-coached BFC
did not take long to bounce back as Muirang scored the equalizer in the 20th minute, courtesy of a magical free-kick that curled into the back of the net, giving Green’s keeper Sarath no chance whatsoever. Bengaluru played an attacking game post that and created quite a few chances but failed to convert any of them in the first half. However, they did not take long to go ahead in the second session as Leon Augustine scored the second goal for his team just minutes after the restart. Bhutia then scored the third just before the threequarter hour mark to give the Blues a comfortable two-goal cushion. Dip Majumdar and Deepak Singh did create some chances and put pressure on the Bengaluru goal but the Blues defence did well to keep the lead intact. In the last few minutes, Army Green pulled one back, through another spot-kick but it was all over by then.

Brazil defender Alves to not sign for any club until 2022 S A O PA U L O , SEP 25 (AGENCIES): B r a z i l defender Dani Alves Dani Alves has decided not to join any club until the end of the year, the 38-year-old said after terminating his contract with Sao Paulo following a dispute over unpaid salaries. Sao Paulo said this month Alves would no longer play for them after he refused to
return to training and told the club he wanted to be paid. Neither Alves nor the club cited a figure, but Brazilian newspaper O Globo said the club owed him around $2 million. After his exit from Sao Paulo, Alves had been linked in local media with a host of leading Brazilian clubs, including Fluminense and Flamengo. Alves, who led Brazil to an Olympic gold medal in Tokyo last month, was left out of coach Tite’s squad for next month’s World Cup qualifiers.

Bhupathi-Paes explain their ‘chest bump’ celebration in ‘Break Point’
MUMBAI, SEP 25 (IANS): Iconic tennis stars Mahesh Bhupathi and Leander Paes have opened up about their chest bump celebrations, in the upcoming documentary series ‘Break Point’. Leander said: “Mahesh was very introverted and quiet. Our opponents would always attack him and I would be the one out there fighting against the bullies like I did when I was in school. I felt that I had to evoke a sense of physical ag-
gression out of him. While Mahesh was in a shell and was quiet, I was pumping with adrenaline.” Leander added that in one of their earlier matches, he was at the net and looked back at Mahesh after a point, and he was quiet. He shared: “I thought I have to rattle him up a bit otherwise we are not going to win this match. I started running towards him and I could see his eyes getting scared. I just jumped up to
his chest and I thumped him in his chest. And then it became a thing.” “Whenever we were low on energy, we chest bumped. Whenever we were wanting to turn a match around, we chest bumped.” Mahesh shared: “I am pretty sure that the first time we did the chest bump was when we played our first Davis Cup match together. Considering the height difference, everything between us was spontaneous. It worked.
3rd WODI: Under-pressure Indian bowlers gear up to prevent clean sweep
MACKAY (AUSTRALIA), SEP 25 (PTI): India’s under-fire bowlers will need to put up a muchimproved show as they face the ignominy of a clean sweep against an Australian team, which is looking for its 27th win on the trot, during the third and final women’s ODI here on Sunday. A marginal no-ball call off the final delivery bowled by Jhulan Goswami found India won the wrong side of the result in the second WODI. The match indeed was a humdinger but not being able to defend a total as big as 274 after having the home team on the mat for the better part doesn’t speak highly of Mithali Raj’s outfit. There is a trend in cricket, the sides that snatch defeat from the jaws of victory in close games like India did on Friday, end up losing both momentum and confidence in their next few games. The manner in which Beth Mooney, who opened in absence of Rachel Haynes along with Tahlia McGrath and Nicola Carey, snatched the game away would hurt for a long time. And they could do it with ease without any contribution from one of their best batters Alussa Healy and the iconic captain Meg Lanning. India’s bowling attack barring Goswami, who is in a league of her own, hasn’t delivered throughout 2021. A lot of it is due to the fact that the Indian cricket establishment failed to find a worthy new ball partner for Goswami once Amita Sharma left the scene a decade back. Shikha Pandey is very hardworking cricketer but could never measure up to the level of being a regular
partner for Goswami and neither the likes of Mansi Joshi, Puja Vastrakar, Monica Patel could instil any confidence. Niranjana Nagarajan was put in cold storage by the cricket system and Meghana Singh is still raw and requires time to deliver. The spin department was India’s strength but stronger opposition teams have now measured up how to play Poonam Yadav’s loopy leg breaks and thus she has largely become ineffective. Deepti Sharma, at least in bowling, has been consistent but is more of a restrictive bowler without skill-sets to run through an opposition. One could sense a bit of complacency in Yadav, who seemed to have taken her place for granted knowing that there aren’t good enough replacements in the horizon. Ditto for Deepti, whose overall game hasn’t improved one bit in the last four years since the 2021 WODI World Cup. She still gets stuck in the middle overs where the team loses momentum and this happens even after playing in all big T20 leagues across the globe. How Mithali, who herself is facing the heat because of her pedestrian strike-rate, would manage to lift the team is the big question. She has scored a lot of half-centuries of late but save the one that came in an inconsequential win in England, most of those r uns has added to her growing tally of 20,000 plus international runs without much help to the team. If India lose this series 0-3, chances of which look imminent, then they would have lost nine out of their last 11 50-over
games which isn’t the best preparation going into the WODI World Cup in New Zealand early next year. Mithali and Deepti are the two weak links in this batting line-up when it comes to scoring runs at a quick clip. They have in the past year wasted an awful lot of deliveries putting the other batters under tremendous pressure and the below-par team totals have made it even more difficult for the bowling attack. It could be said that Indian captain’s run-out after scoring 8 off 23 balls proved to be a blessing in disguise as Smriti Mandhana and Richa Ghosh could again up the ante which was lost after Shafali Verma’s departure. In case Harmanpreet Kaur is available, it would be great but the Indian vice-captain has also been in poor form so no one knows how much of a difference will it make in such a situation. TEAMS FROM India: Mithali Raj (Captain), Harmanpreet Kaur (vice-captain), Smriti Mandhana, Shafali Verma, Punam Raut, Jemimah Rodrigues, Deepti Sharma, Sneh Rana, Yastika Bhatia, Taniya Bhatia (wicketkeeper), Shikha Pandey, Jhulan Goswami, Meghna Singh, Pooja Vastrakar, Rajeshwari Gayakwad, Poonam Yadav, Richa Ghosh, Ekta Bisht. Australia: Meg Lanning (captain), Darcie Brown, Maitlan Brown, Stella Campbell, Nicola Carey, Hannah Darlington, Ashleigh Gardner, Alyssa Healy, Tahlia McGrath, Sophie Molineux, Beth Mooney, Ellyse Perry, Georgia Redmayne, Molly Strano, Annabel Sutherland, Tayla Vlaeminck, Georgia Wareham. Match Starts at 5:35 am IST.
Champion Atletico Madrid suffers shock loss at Alaves
Deportivo Alaves players celebrate after the match.
VITORIA (SPAIN) SEP 25 (AGENCIES): Atletico Madrid’s Spanish title defence was dealt a blow as it suffered a shock 1-0 defeat at lowly Alaves in LaLiga on Saturday. Centre-back Victor Laguardia’s fourth-minute header from a Ruben Duarte corner was enough for the host to secure its first win of the season as it moved off the foot of the table. The result left Diego Simeone’s side second on 14 points, two behind leader Real Madrid, which is in acK Y M C
tion later on Saturday when it hosts Villarreal. “We need to improve and ensure that our games are more consistent, because right now they really aren’t,” Simeone said. “It’s always tough when the opposition closes up shop. We didn’t have the kind of speed or skill needed to undo them. The most important thing for us is to improve and grow and I’m confident we’re heading in the right direction with the work we’re doing,” he added. Atleti huffed and puffed as it attempted to find
a way back into the match after such an early blow, but was kept out by admirable defending from the host. Marcos Llorente, Luis Suarez and substitute Angel Correa all went close for the visitor and Laguardia headed Kieran Trippier’s shot off the line. Tomas Pina missed a glorious chance to double Alaves’s lead nine minutes from time, but fired over when unmarked on the penalty spot - but his side hung on to claim a first victory over Atleti since 2003.

IPL 2021: Shami, Bishnoi script win for Punjab Dijanglung wins ping pong C’ship
SHARJAH, SEP 25 (PTI): Young leg-spinner Ravi Bishnoi snared three wickets as Punjab Kings dished out a clinical bowling display to beat struggling Sunrisers Hyderabad by five runs in a low-scoring but entertaining Indian Premier League match here on Saturday. The 21-year-old Bishnoi (3/24) ran through the SRH middle order after veteran India pacer Mohammed Shami rocked the run chase early on by dismissing both David Warner (2) and captain Kane Williamson (1) cheaply in the first and third overs respectively. Chasing 126 for a win on a slow Sharjah Cricket Stadium track, SRH ended at 120 for 7 in 20 overs to end their hopes of making it to the play-offs. Punjab, however, kept their hopes alive as they grabbed the fifth place with 8 points from 10 matches. West Indian Jason Holder raised hopes of a dramatic win for SRH with a late onslaught of 47 off just 29 balls with the help of five sixes but in the end SRH were short by five runs. the final two overs and Arshdeep Singh conceded just four runs from the penultimate over. Needing 17 runs from the final over bowled by Nathan Ellis, Holder hit a six in the second ball but SRH needed a six to tie the score and take the match to Super Over. But Holder, who had taken three wickets for 19 runs in the Punjab Kings innings, could score just one run from the final ball.
SRH were 20 for 2 after Power Play and Bishnoi took the centre stage from then onwards as he removed the next three batsmen to stifle the SRH run chase. First, he had Manish Pandey (13) in the eighth over before dismissing Kedar Jadhav (12) and Abdul Samad (1). From 43 for 3 at the halfway mark, SRH were 60 for 5 in the 13th over.
The arrival of Jason Holder at the crease gave some hopes to SRH as the West Indian hit two sixes to take 16 runs from the 16th over bowled by Nathan Ellis. SRH needed 35 from the final four overs and Wriddhiman Shah (31) was set at the other end but he got run out in the 17th over in a horrible mix-up. Earlier, Holder’s impressive spell of three wickets for 19 runs helped SRH restrict Punjab Kings to 125 for 7 after being sent in to bat. Punjab Kings batsmen struggled to get going on a slow wicket and failed to stitch any big partnership, the highest being the 30-run stand between Chris Gayle and Aiden Markram, who top-scored with a 32-ball 27, for the third wicket. Captain KL Rahul had scored 49 in the previous match but got dismissed early this time as he fell to Holder’s first ball for a runa-ball 21 in the fifth over. The other opener Mayank Agarwal (5), who had scored 67 against Rajasthan Royals on Tuesday, was out four balls later as he sliced a Holder delivery to Kane Williamson at mid off. Punjab Kings were
29 for 2 after Power Play and could have been three wickets down the next over but David Warner dropped Markram off Khaleel Ahmed. The Mohali-based side were 55 for 2 at halfway mark. Chris Gayle shunned playing his trademark bighitting shots but got dimissed for 14 off 17 balls off the bowling of Rashid Khan. Nicholas Pooran (8) followed his senior West Indian colleague to the dressing room the next over, while Markram’s promising innings ended in the 15th over while looking for big shots to accelerate the innings. Deepak Hooda (13) hit some lusty blows before substitute fielder J Suchith plucked the ball out of thin air in an outstanding fielding effort to dismiss the batsman. Punjab Kings took 14 runs from the final over bowled by Bhuvneshwar Kumar to end their innings at 125 for 7. DC thrash RR by 33 runs: Delhi Capitals thrashed Rajasthan Royals by 33 runs in their Indian Premier League (IPL) match in Abu Dhabi on Saturday.

Sania Mirza in Raducanu decides to drop coach Richardson Lando Norris takes first pole doubles final at of F1 career at Russian GP Ostrava Open
SOCHI, SEP 25 (AGENCIES): McLaren’s Lando Norris secured an incredible first F1 pole position after a chaotic end to a wet-dry Russian GP qualifying, as Carlos Sainz and George Russell also finished in the top three while big favourite Lewis Hamilton was made to rue a pit-lane crash and a spin on his final lap. Hamilton will only start fourth for Sunday’s race as, in dramatic circumstances, he failed to capitalise on title rival Max Verstappen’s engine penalty. The world champion had been in control of a damp Sochi shootout before the field gambled onto soft tyres at the end of Q3 - and Hamilton hit the wall when driving slowly through the pits, and broke his front wing. Mercedes were able to repair his car but Hamilton then only had one lap on the slick tyres in difficult drying conditions, while other drivers were able to build up to one final flying effort.
McLaren driver Lando Norris celebrates taking pole position.
Sainz was the first driver to overhaul Hamilton, who had provisional pole, before Norris then stormed through to top qualifying for the first time in his dazzling young F1 career, beating the Ferrari by half a second. “It feels amazing,” said Norris after backing up McLaren’s Italian GP win in style In more surprise scenes, Russell displayed his qualifying brilliance in the Williams once again by pipping Hamilton - his team-mate at Mercedes next year - with an epic late surge.
Hamilton, lacking grip in his tyres, wasn’t improving on his last lap and then spun and nudged into the wall in the final sector. “Twice in the wall... that’s very rare for me,” said Hamilton. “I’m really sorry to all the team because that’s not what you expect from a champion.” He is still set to start Sunday’s race 16 places ahead of Verstappen, who he trails by five points in the championship, but missed out on a big opportunity to dominate the weekend from pole.
OSTRAVA (CZECH REPUBLIC), SEP 25 (IANS): Sania Mirza and her Chinese partner Zhang Shuai stormed into the women’s doubles final at the Ostrava Open WTA tennis championship, beating Japan’s Eri Hozumi and Makoto Ninomiya in straight sets on Saturday. Sania-Zhang, seeded second here, defeated the Japanese pair 6-2, 7-5 in an hour and 20 minutes and await the winner of the other semi-final between Pola’d’s Magda Linette and Bernarda Pera of the USA, the top seeds, and the American-Kiwi team of Kaitlyn Christian and Erin Routliffe. Sania and Zhang had reached the semi-finals by beating Anna Danilina of Kazakhstan and Lidziya Marozava of Belarus 6-3, 2-6 10-6. In the semi-final clash, Sania and Zhang opened up a 4-0 lead and though they were broken in the fifth game, the IndoChinese pair maintained their serve after that as they won the set 6-2.
LO N D O N, S E P 2 5 (AGENCIES): US Open winner Emma Raducanu has decided to replace coach Andrew Richardson with someone who has the experience to keep her at the top level on the WTA Tour. Richardson, who coached British youth players, worked with Raducanu at Bromley Tennis Centre near her Kent home and then went with the 18-year-old to New York, where she entered her second major in the qualifying rounds. He replaced Nigel Sears, Andy Murray’s father-in-law, who Raducanu dropped after reaching the round of 16 at Wimbledon in July. “After Wimbledon, I was ranked around 200 in the world and at the time I thought Andrew would be a great coach to trial so we went to the States but never did I even dream of winning the US Open,” Raducanu said at an event staged by the British Lawn Tennis Association at the
Emma Raducanu
National Tennis Centre. “At this stage in my career, and playing the top players in the world, I realised I really need someone right now that has had that WTA Tour experience at the high levels,” she said. “I’m so new to it, I really need someone to guide me who’s already been through that. She said it had been tough to axe Richardson after they had shared the euphoria of her US triumph. “Obviously having such an experience with your team, it’s tough to have that conversation
with anyone, but I think for me it’s just really what I need,” she said. Raducanu’s seeming ruthlessness was backed up by one of the most experienced coaches on the women’s tour, Patrick Mouratoglou, who has guided Serena Williams since 2012. Speaking to AFP on Friday the Frenchman said: “young Emma Raducanu...really impressed me. But now the ‘crap’ starts.” Raducanu, who only played her first WTA tournament at Nottingham in June and then played two
more tour events in the run up to the US Open, said she is weighing when to return to action. The prestigious Indian Wells tournament is due to begin on October 6. “Wherever I play next, I’m going to make sure I’m ready. I don’t want to jump into things too early,” she said. R a d u c a n u ’s N e w York success means she is ranked 22 in the world and could still qualify for the end-of-season WTA Finals. “I would never even have dreamed of before because it was just so far out of reach,” she said. “My priority is putting in the best possible pre-season that I can so I can start strong next year.” Raducanu was feted in New York following her triumph. She attended the glitzy Met Gala and became an ambassador for New York-based luxury jewellery brand Tiffany. “All the opportunities I’m getting have been very fun, but where I really want to be is on a tennis court.”
Fernandes misses last-gasp penalty as Villa shock Man Utd Asia’s fastest man Bingtian sees MANCHESTER, SEP 25 (AGENCIES): Bruno Fernandes blazed a stoppage-time penalty over the crossbar as Aston Villa earned a shock 1-0 victory at a below-par Manchester United in the Premier League on Saturday. Kortney Hause’s 88thminute header put Villa on course for their first league win over United since 2009, but the defender’s handball gifted United an opportunity to steal a point, only for Fernandes to miss the target. Since Cristiano Ronaldo re-signed for United, there has been much debate over who will take penalties and free-kicks this season – last term’s spotkick taker Fernandes or his fellow Portuguese. It was Fernandes who took the first direct freekick on Saturday, firing into the wall, with Ronaldo getting the next one, and Fernandes, following Hause’s handball, never looked back as he placed the ball on the spot in the 92nd minute. But last season’s top scorer missed only his second spot-kick for the club to the dismay of an expectant crowd.
Aston Villa’s Kortney Hause celebrates scoring their first goal on Saturday.
“First of all the way they (Villa players) get round the penalty spot, get round Bruno and that, that’s not to my liking,” United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer said. “Bruno is usually very good in those positions and, unfortunately, he missed this one.” In truth, United got what they deserved. Villa had two great opportunities to break the deadlock in the first half with fullback Matt Targett blazing over from two metres out before Ollie Watkins was
denied by a fine save from United goalkeeper David de Gea. The home side, encouraged by a frustrated Old Trafford crowd, stepped it up late in the match, but Hause climbed highest to stun the hosts before Fernandes’ miss and, United tasted league defeat for the first time this season. That second successive home loss in all competitions means United dropped to fourth in the standings on goal difference, with the top four
sides all on 13 points. Villa climbed to seventh. Solskjaer called for a fast start from his side in his programme notes having seen his team often struggle to get going, and that is exactly what he got as Fernandes wasted a great chance inside two minutes. However, the hosts tailed off and really should have gone behind at halftime as Targett and Watkins missed great opportunities. The home fans were getting restless as the Premier League’s top goal-
scorers struggled to create clear-cut chances, with two headers as close as United came to breaking the deadlock before the break. The game opened up as the second half wore on with Mason Greenwood going close before De Gea denied Watkins with another fine save. But the Spanish stopper could do nothing as Hause powered his header home, sparking wild scenes of celebration in the away end. The headlines, however, went to Fernandes, as his miss gave Villa a famous and thoroughly deserved success. “It (a Villa win at Old Trafford) has been a long time coming,” Villa coach Dean Smith said. “Our performance levels have been good the last couple of times we’ve been here. “What that does is it gives an awful lot of belief to the players now.”

bright future for Chinese sprinting BEIJING, SEPT 25 (AGENCIES): Asia’s fastest man, Su Bingtian, has backed Chinese sprinters to keep improving after a summer when the 32-yearold became the first athlete from the country to reach the final of the 100 metres at the Olympic Games. Su led the United team - essentially China’s national squad - to gold in the 4x100 metres relay at the National Games on Friday, following his performance in the Tokyo Games, where he broke the Asian record in the semifinals of 100 metres. The Guangdong native, who finished sixth in the 100 metres in Tokyo, also won gold in the individual event this week at the National Games in Xi’an. He expressed confidence China is producing sprinters capable of following in his footsteps. “From today’s event, I can see a bright future for Chinese sprinting,” Su, who was appearing at his fourth National Games, said according to Xinhua. “The top four in the final all broke the 38-second barrier, which really inspires me, because only the national team could do

it a few years ago. “Chinese sprinting is on the right path, and the National Games is an important stage for promising sprinters before they attend the Olympic Games.” Su set the Asian record for the 100m at 9.83 seconds to qualify for the Olympic final before running 9.95 seconds in the Xi’an Olympic Center on Tuesday to win the title at the quadrennial National Games. Xie Zhenye is the only other Chinese sprinter to have run under 10 seconds for the distance, which he managed in 2018 before suffering a series of injuries that have affected his subsequent performances. Winner of the National Games title in 2017, Xie ran
10.10 seconds to finish second behind Su on Tuesday as he continues his return to top form. Xie’s “limit is definitely not 10.10,” said Su after the 100m final. “He has been hampered by the injuries. This is not his best performance. I trust in Xie to have better results next year when he competes at the Asian Games in Hangzhou. “We shouldn’t just question an athlete when he’s not at his best. Instead, we need to help and encourage him to regain his momentum. “I will use my experiences to influence more people and let them appreciate Chinese athletes.”
