Drug users rising in Nagaland EVEN SCHOOL CHILDREN ENSNARED IN THE DEADLY HABIT
Staff Reporter
DIMAPUR, JUN 26 (NPN): Nagaland is plagued with many serious issues which have only been given a mention and then ignored or forgotten but which cannot be brushed under the carpet any longer as they pose imminent threat to the present and future generations. Besides increasing anti-socialism, the state has an underbelly of rampant drug use among the youth some as shockingly young as below ten years of age. Most alarmingly, the growing incidence of drug use among minors and women is increasing and made worse due to lack of a rehabilitation centre exclusively for women drug users. It may be mentioned that the International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, or World Drug Day, is marked on June 26 ever y year to strengthen action and cooperation in achieving a world free of drug abuse. Perhaps, districts located along the Indo-Myanmar international border are facing worst crisis of rampant drug addiction among which ‘Sun Flower’ being the most widely available and used substance. At Noklak district headquarters, it is reported that over 300 drug users are undergoing therapy for rehabilitation. The situation in the border areas has become critical and pose a huge problem in terms of destroying the future generation. At Dimapur, the drug scene is also menacing as many, especially school

children and college students are being enticed into taking drugs and which has become a dangerous trend. According to Medical Officer in charge of Opioid Substitution Therapy (OST) at Dimapur District Hospital Dr Tahito Veshpu, drug users were mostly in the age group 18-50 years. The name of a particular drug ‘Sun Flower’ or ‘SF’ has become a byword among many youths across Nagaland especially school going children. Considered the cheapest and crudest form of heroin (opiates) where other drugs like sleeping pills, spasmodart, alprazolam, etc, are mixed as per the requirements of the addict, SF is consumed by sniffing the fumes of the substance burned on a paper, snorted and even injected. The very fact that ‘SF’ is affordable and gives the kick desired, has led to its growing popularity. It was learned that many addicts were not even aware of the mixture as they just consumed it to experience short- lived ecstasy. As per sources, the
SF powder is peddled in colourful tobacco packets/ containers and is available from Rs 500 and upwards, depending on the quantity and this affordability has made it as the most widely used drug. When purchased in bulk, the price of ‘SF’ becomes more affordable for minors. This reporter also visited a rehabilitation CentreSilas Care Centre- at Dimapur where some of the users in their teens and many of them coming from broken homes, say they picked up the habit to escape mental stress. Some took to drugs due to peer pressure or curiosity. Speaking to Nagaland Post, a 40-year old user and from the porous international border area, confessed to having used drugs such as -spasmoproxyvon (SP) and Relipen (RP) since he was in Class VII. He gave up the habit for 12 years but relapsed. During the interim period, he used to be actively involved with a church. Then after he got into the business of drug peddling to sustain his family, he distanced himself
from the church. Another college dropout, in his 20s from Dimapur confessed that he tried ‘SF’ for the first time out of curiosity since most of his college friends were into the habit. The drop out recalled that he began by first smoking weed (psychotropic) and later switched to SF powder to get a better kick. Interestingly, he also revealed, that users can also call up some numbers to order the drug which is then delivered to the addresses. Though the youth mentioned certain hotspots at Dimapur, the names of colonies are being withheld. Talking to this reporter, a woman drug user in her 30s and currently residing in a rehab centre, disclosed that she first tried pills and later sniffed SF on several occasions. She also claimed to have seen and met many young girls and women living promiscuously to fund their need for drugs. Some young mothers from broken marriages confided that the drug was a temporary and unhealthy escape and once addicted led to more problems mentally, physically and socially. The person in-charge of the rehab centre when the woman is an inmate, lamented that there was no centre dedicated to rehabilitation of women drug users. He said due to absence of women rehabs, the women drug users had to be accommodated in some women centres or accommodated in rehab centres along with males or sent to prayer centres. (Cont’d on p-8)

Nagaland has huge potential in horti exports: Tomar Staff Reporter
DIMAPUR, JUN 26 (NPN): Union Minister of Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare Narendra Singh Tomar said Nagaland had huge potential in horticulture exports as the State was rich in the sector. Speaking at the inauguration of a farmers’ exhibition-cum-workshop at Central Institute of Horticulture (CIH), Medziphema on Sunday, he said the presence of six agro-climatic zones with vast geographical variations in Nagaland in particular and the Northeast in general provided great scope and advantage for growing varieties of horticultural crops compared to other States. Tomar, who is on a two-day visit to the State, remarked that Nagaland had great potential for export of horticultural produce due to its proximity to SouthEast Asian countries. Hence, he stressed on maintaining global quality standards

and increasing productivity, adding that in doing so, the farmers would get good price and their financial condition would improve, while the agriculture would contribute more to the country’s GDP. Noting that everyone was making efforts together to provide new technology to farmers at low cost, he appreciated the efforts of CIH and the State government in this direction. He also lauded the efforts of the institute in improving the horticulture sector in Nagaland and the State government for doing the needful in this regard. The minister claimed
that Prime Minister Narendra Modi had given importance to agriculture to increase farmers’ income, while exhorting the farmers to incorporate modern technology to derive the benefits from the research done by agricultural scientists. He also claimed that the Prime Minister was working to ensure that the State governments received adequate funds for agriculture, stressing that technology should reach farmers through CIH. Hoping that farmers of the Northeast would bring about a new revolution in horticulture, he admitted

ENPO appeals against Monkeypox not a global emergency taxation on road projects ‘at this stage’, says WHO panel LONDON, JUN 26 (AP): The World Health Organization said the escalating monkeypox outbreak in more than 50 countries should be closely monitored but does not warrant being declared a global health emergency. In a statement, a WHO emergency committee said many aspects of the outbreak were “unusual” and acknowledged that monkeypox-- which is endemic in some African countries-- has been neglected for years. “While a few members expressed differing views, the committee resolved by consensus to advise the WHO director-general that at this stage the outbreak should be determined to not
constitute” a global health emergency, WHO said in a statement. WHO nevertheless pointed to the “emergency nature” of the outbreak and said controlling its spread requires an “intense” response. The committee said the outbreak should be “closely monitored and reviewed after a few weeks.” But it would recommend a re-assessment before then if certain new developments emerge — such as cases among sex workers; spread to other countries or within countries that have already had cases; increased severity of cases; or an increasing rate of spread.

that the region had been a victim of neglect for a long time and, due to its remoteness, benefits of various schemes did not reach here properly. “But, after Modi ji became the Prime Minister, the region has been receiving constant attention and funds were being released for development,” he added. He cited Modi’s multiple visits to the region as a proof of his seriousness in its development, besides his deputation of Central ministers every few months. Tomar assured that CIH would not be shifted out of Nagaland anywhere and that the Centre would provide adequate funds for its improvement. Meanwhile, the minister also released the extension folders published by CIH on the occasion besides launching the ready to serve (RTS) juice of Litchi, Mango, Lemon, Strawberry & Pineapple made by NG Baio, founder of Hills Foods from Senapati, Manipur.

Speaking as special guest under the theme ‘Addressing drug challenges in health and humanitarian crisis’ commissioner and secretary of Social Welfare, Martha R Ritse admitted that drug abuse had become a major social concern, providing to be a principal obstruction in development at all levels. She said, with the fastchanging milieu, synthetic drugs and intravenous drugs had led to spike in HIV/ AIDS, which was a matter of concern. She pointed out the Nagaland’s geographical location has put the state in a vulnerable position with
access to all sorts of illegal drugs trafficked through porous domestic and international borders, resulting loss of lives due to substance abuse. Acknowledging the role of Narcotics cell (PHQ), NGOs such as Kripa foundation, Nagaland Users Network in the field, Ritse, also encouraged more churches and civil societies to come forward and work collectively in tackling drug related challenges. She also informed that the department was pursuing with the Ministry to set up more rehabilitation centre and de-addiction centres

‘Agnipath’ scheme: Most States yet to announce quota in govt jobs Maha crisis: Shinde camp ready NEW DELHI, JUN 26 (PTI): Apprehension continues to remain over the future of soldiers to be recruited under the ‘Agnipath’ scheme as the Centre and several state governments are yet to roll out a comprehensive plan for their rehabilitation once they retire after four years of service in the armed forces. Adding to the anxiety of the youths, none of the states ruled by the opposition parties announced any favourable recruitment scheme for ‘Agniveers’ to be hired under the scheme, while a few demanded that it be completely withdrawn. After the June 14 announcement of the ‘Ag-
nipath’ scheme, at least 18 states and Union Territories - Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal, Telangana, Karnataka, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Haryana, Rajasthan, Andhra Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Odisha, Jharkhand, Uttarakhand, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir and Delhi - witnessed protests, some of them violent. While BJP-ruled Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Haryana, Uttarakhand and Assam announced that they would give preference to ‘Agniveers’ in the recruitment for police, the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) said it has decided to reserve 10
per cent vacancies in the Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs) and Assam Rifles for ‘Agniveers’. However, experts believe that the process would not be so simple. A state police recruitment board head had said that reservation cannot be more than 50 per cent in employment and most of the ‘Agniveers’ will be in the unreserved category as the Army has no reservation system. “So, the idea that they can be absorbed in CAPFs and state police may not work. They have to be considered only against 50 per cent of unreserved vacancies. It will also mean that meritorious and better-educated
non-Agniveers will find it difficult to join the police. This will impact the efficiency of the police. “So, how does the policy of Army recruitment reconcile with the system of reservation in the civilian sector of the government,” the state police recruitment board head asked. Experts also believe that the entire process may come under legal scrutiny as it is not clear whether the pay of a retired ‘Agniveer’ after the four-year-stint in the armed forces will be protected and seniority maintained. “This will be a tight rope walk for the government as this needs to be cleared to avoid any disgruntlement
among the constables recruited directly by the state police,” an expert said. On the other hand, non-BJP ruled states like Punjab, Rajasthan and Tamil Nadu, which contribute a significant number of youths to the armed forces, sought withdrawal of the scheme, giving a clear indication that they have no plans to reserve government jobs for ‘Agniveers’. Interestingly BJP ally Nitish Kumar, chief minister of Bihar, which saw maximum violence and damage to railways and other government properties, has not spoken on the ‘Agnipath’ scheme.
to face floor test, says rebel MLA
GUWAHATI, JUN 26 (AGENCIES): As the Maharashtra political crisis continued, rebel Shiv Sena MLA Deepak Kesarkar on Sunday said they have a majority and are ready to face a floor test in the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly. In an exclusive interview with ANI, Kesarkar said that apart from Maharashtra cabinet minister for Higher and Technical Education Uday Samant, one or two more MLAs will join them. “One, two more MLAs will come. With the support
of our associate party and Independent MLAs, our strength will increase to 51,” he said. Reacting to Sanjay Raut who took a potshot at the Eknath Shinde-led faction of rebel MLAs and asked how long they will hide in Guwahati, Kesarkar said he speaks in an indecent language. “His language is indecent. I didn’t make such type of statement. He was our leader. This is very bad. Your numbers have decreased and now you will say anything. It is not acceptable,” he said. K Y M C

Assam BJP ministers meet rebel Sena MLAs at Ghy hotel
GUWAHATI, JUN 26 (PTI): Assam ministers Ashok Singhal and Pijush Hazarika on Sunday visited the luxury hotel in Guwahati, where dissident Shiv Sena leader Eknath Shinde is camping with other MLAs from Maharashtra, and held a series of discussions with them, sources said. This is the third time in two days that Singhal, the Assam Housing and Urban Affairs Minister, has met the dissidents. On Saturday, he went to the hotel twice and held discussions with Shinde and the other rebel MLAs. M e a n w h i l e, C h i e f Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, while returning from the airport after assessing the flood situation in Silchar, stopped for a few minutes at Gotanagar area on the NH-37, where the Radisson Blu hotel is situated. His convoy stopped on the opposite side of the Radisson Blu and he greeted the journalists, who have been reporting from outside the closed gates of the hotel. He then left the place. A source told PTI that Hazarika, the Parliament Affairs Minister of Assam, went to the hotel in the morning and was there for about two hours. “Singhal reached the hotel around 11 am. Haz-
Security personnel keep vigil outside the hotel where rebel Shiv Sena MLAs are staying, in Guwahati. arika had left before Singhal went,” he added. Some security personnel of Hazarika waited outside when he was holding the meeting with the Shinde camp. Singhal’s SUV along with his security was seen entering the hotel after Hazarika’s convoy left the place. It is, however, not immediately known what Singhal and Hazarika discussed with the rebel Shiv Sena legislators and Independent MLAs from the western state. Another source close to the development said that Singhal had gone to the hotel on Saturday afternoon as well as in the night and held discussions. When contacted, Sing-
hal confirmed to PTI that he went to the hotel on Saturday afternoon and Sunday morning, but declined to share details. He did not mention the Saturday night’s visit. A close associate of the minister said, “He went there to meet an MLA whom he knew.” Hazarika remained unavailable for comments. Significantly, these meetings took place hours after 16 dissident Shiv Sena MLAs were sent disqualification notices. The BJP, which once had an alliance with the Shiv Sena, has so far brushed its hands off from the present political turmoil in Maharashtra. Despite sending a
party MP and an MLA to receive the Maharashtra legislators at Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International (LGBI) Airport in Guwahati on June 22, Chief Minister Sarma claimed that they arrived here as guests on their own. The Assam Police has taken over the security from the private guards of the hotel and is not allowing anyone to enter the premises. The Maharashtra Legislature Secretariat on Saturday issued ‘summons’ to 16 of the rebel Shiv Sena MLAs, including Shinde, seeking written replies by the evening of June 27 to the complaints seeking their disqualification. After receiving the summons, the Shiv Sena MLAs have been huddling inside the hotel Since Sunday morning, sources said. “They are discussing various options to respond to the notices. The current political situation is being deliberated in the meeting,” another source said. In what seems to be an apparent bid to topple the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government in Maharashtra, dissident legislators of Shiv Sena, which heads the ruling coalition, are camping in Guwahati, around 2,700 km away.
Assam government busy serving ‘cocktailmocktail’ to rebel Shiv Sena MLAs: Cong
Ajoy Kumar Senior Cong ress leader Ajoy Kumar on Sunday alleged that the BJP-led Assam government was busy serving ‘cocktail-mocktail’ to dissident Maharashtra MLAs camping in a luxury hotel here but was not able to even provide free drinking water to flood-affected people in the state. He claimed that people were having to pay money to receive their rightful relief materials. “The BJP-led government in Assam is serving cocktail-mocktail to the Shiv Sena legislators, but it doesn’t have money to provide even drinking water to the flood-affected people,” he told reporters here. Kumar claimed there were videos of people having to pay Rs 30 to receive water bottles as part of
their due relief in some parts of the state. “This is the condition of politics in Assam...when people elect such representatives, this is bound to happen,” the former Jharkhand Pradesh Congress president said. He also took a dig at the Narendra Modi-led central government over the Agnipath scheme, alleging that it will weaken the security mechanism of the country. Kumar questioned various provisions of the scheme, including job opportunities for the Agniveers after they are discharged from duty following four years of service, and lack of pension benefits. “Never has the country been so weak in 70 years that it is unable to pay pension to our jawans,” he said. The Congress leader claimed that ex-servicemen were presently not getting jobs and thousands of youths will be added to this number of unemployed people if the Agnipath scheme is implemented. “This scheme is not for securing our country or recruiting youths, but to save money,” Kumar added.
BJP wins 3 seats, Congress 1 in crucial Tripura by-elections
AGARTALA, JUN 26 (PTI): The ruling BJP won three assembly seats and the Congress bagged one in the high-stakes by-elections in Tripura on Sunday, officials said. Chief Minister Manik Saha won the bypoll to the crucial Town Bardowali seat by 6,104 votes. He secured 17,181 votes, which is 51.63 per cent of the total votes polled, as per the Election Commission. His nearest rival Asish Kumar Saha of the Congress bagged 11,077 votes or 33.29 per cent of the total votes. Congress candidate Sudip Roy Barman won the Agartala seat by a margin of 3,163 votes. He secured 17,241 votes, which is 43.46 per cent of the total votes polled. His nearest rival Ashok Sinha of the BJP got 14,268 votes (35.57 per cent). With this victory, Roy Barman became the only Congress MLA in the assembly after the party’s complete rout in the 2018 assembly elections. The CPI(M) lost its citadel of Jubarajnagar to the BJP by a margin of 4,572 votes. BJP candidate Malina Debnath got 18,769 votes (51.83 per cent), while CPI(M)’s Shailendra Chandra Nath secured 14,197 votes (39.2 per cent).
In Surma, BJP’s Swapna Das won by a margin of 4,583 votes, securing a total of 16,677 votes (42.34 per cent). Her nearest rival Baburam Satnami of TIPRA Motha got 12,094 votes (30.7 per cent). Thanking the people of the state for voting for the BJP, the chief minister said that the results reflect an understanding between the CPI(M) and the Congress. “The people who voted for us, I thank them. This is the victory of BJP workers. In Town Bardowali, I expected the margin to be a bit more. However, the results prove the understanding between the CPI(M) and Congress. We will work accordingly in the future, but people did not take this understanding in a good way,” he told reporters. “We have seen postpoll violence in the state for many years, so we have urged the people to stay away from such a thing. People’s trust is the main factor, and we have to see they don’t face any problems. I would also request the opposition parties to maintain peace,” he added. The TMC, which was looking to make inroads in the Northeastern state, performed dismally with its candidates losing deposits in all the seats.

Damaged vehicles after alleged violence on the result day of Tripura Assembly by-elections, outside Tripura Pradesh Congress Committe office, in Agartala. (PTI) AGARTALA, JUN 26 (PTI): At least 19 people including Tripura PCC chief Birajit Sinha were injured in a clash between Congress and BJP supporters in front of Congress Bhavan here on Sunday. Police fired tear gas to disperse the mob, which clashed after the results of the by-elections for four assembly seats were declared. BJP won three seats and Congress one. The entire Post Office Chowmuhani area where Congress Bhavan is located wore a deserted look after the clash. “Jubilant Congress supporters returned to Congress Bhavan with the winning candidate in Agartala assembly seat, Sudip Roy Barman, from the counting hall around 1 pm. “When they were pre-
paring for lunch, a strong group of BJP supporters attacked Congress Bhavan. The Tripura Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC) president was hit by bricks on his head while one Congress worker, identified as Romi Miah, was stabbed by BJP supporters,” Congress media-in-charge Asish Kumar Saha said. He alleged that BJP supporters led by a Yuva Morcha leader rained bricks on the building and damaged several motorcycles parked in front of it. Saha alleged that police remained silent when the attack took place. Information and Cultural Affairs Minister Sushanta Chowdhury, on the other hand, alleged that Congress supporters had first hurled bricks at BJP corporator of Agartala Municipal Corpo-

Malik, who has also served as Jammu and Kashmir governor, urged the government to “reconsider” the new scheme under which youths will be recruited as soldiers on a four-year basis. “Future jawans will train for six months, and they will have six months of leave. After three years of job, when they return to their homes, they will hardly get any marriage proposal,” Mr Malik told
reporters in Baghpat. “The Agnipath scheme is against future jawans, and a fraud with their hopes.” Meghalaya Governor, who is from Baghpat, had come to Khekra village here to pay condolences to the family of his friend Gaje Singh Dhama who died recently. The governor said he had earlier raised the issue of farmers when they were protesting against the three now-repealed farm laws, and now will speak about the youth and their problems. Asked by journalists if he should have quit as governor before raising these political issue, Mr Malik said, “Had I got into the ‘chakkar’ (trap) of advisors like you, I would not have been able to reach this place.” “I will leave the post in a minute, if the person who has made me (a Governor) asks me to do so.”

They are trying to forge trouble after winning one out of four assembly seats in the bypolls. They are dreaming of returning to power with the help of CPI(M),” he said. Police said three people have been hospitalised but no FIR has been lodged so far. “The TPCC president has been admitted to a private hospital. The Congress supporter who was stabbed is also undergoing treatment. One BJP supporter, identified as Bishal Chakraborty, received head injuries and was administered 12 stitches,” a police officer said.
GUWAHATI, JUN 26 (AGENCIES): Drinking water scarce commodity in the largely inundated Barak Valley town, reports The Hindu. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Sunday said the unprecedented flooding of Silchar town was a man-made disaster. He also said relief material could not reach many of some 2.8 lakh marooned people in the southern Assam town, the nerve-centre of Barak Valley. “Silchar’s flood was man-made. It would not have happened had the embankment at Bethukandi not been breached by some miscreants,” Mr. Sarma told journalists after visiting the flooded town for the second time in less than a week. He assessed the situation partly in an inflated boat of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and partly by wading through the flooded streets in Silchar, where the water rose up to 12 feet in some areas. The Chief Minister said the culprits who left a gaping hole in the Barak River embankment at Bethukandi, more than 3 km from the town, would be brought to book. Lapses, if any, on the part of officials would also be probed, he said. “The Bethukandi in-

The next time there is a flood, we have to post policemen at the embankment so that nobody can breach it,” he said. Sarma said the Cachar District Disaster Management Authority had issued an advisory but many residents did not take it seriously as the town had never seen such a flood. Water scarcity Following complaints of irregular or partial distribution of relief, the Chief Minister instructed officials to help as many people as they can. “After going back, I will try to dispatch vegetables to Silchar from Guwahati,” he said. SC to hear pleas by Shinde, rebels CM post offered to Shinde on May 20: Aditya against disqualification notices today
MUMBAI, JUNE 26 (IANS): In a major revelation, Maharashtra Minister Aditya Thackeray on Sunday claimed that Maha Vikas Aghadi’s Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray had offered the CM’s post on a platter to his cabinet colleague Eknath Shinde on May 20. “However, at that time, Shinde had dilly-dallied, was evasive and did not give a proper response... I had heard of some murky goings-on... Exactly a month later on June 20, Shinde and his group started the rebellion in the party,” said Thackeray Jr. He termed as “good riddance” that all the ‘muck’ has gone out of the party on its own, now leaving it clean, amid a thunderous round of applause. Thackeray added that the group of MLAs - currently camping in a five-star hotel in Guwahati - are ‘traitors’ who will not be taken back into the Shiv Sena. He also harked on his

father and Chief Minister Thackeray’s statement that the party’s doors are always open for those who desire to leave or for those wanting to return to the party fold. Aditya’s speech is significant as certain reports emerged from Guwahati that the rebels group now wants Shinde to be made the CM, and the Bharatiya Janata Party’s central minister Raosaheb Danve-Patil claiming the will form a new government in the state within next 2-3 days.
Issuing a veiled warning to the revolters, Thackeray Jr. also said that the route from Mumbai Airport (Santacruz) to the state Legislature (Nariman Point) goes via Worli. A traditional Sena bastion in south-central Mumbai, Worli is also the constituency which elected Aditya for the first time in 2019 and thousands had gathered there with tears in their eyes when Thackeray quit the CM’s official residence ‘Varsha’ on June 22
Maha Minister Uday Samant also joins rebel Sena camp MUMBAI/ JALNA, JUNE 26 (IANS/PTI): In another setback to the besieged Shiv Sena, Maharashtra Higher and Technical Education Minister Uday Samant on Sunday went to join the party rebels in Guwahati. Samant, who was in Mumbai for the past few days and had taken part in all the Sena brainstormers, abruptly left for Surat and from there, took a flight to Guwahati. This makes him the 8th Minister who has shifted allegiance even as Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray and Minister Aditya Thackeray warned that “traitors” will not be taken back to the party they have backstabbed and left. The development came amid reports emanating from Guwahati that the

rebels group now wants to make their leader, Minister Eknath Shinde the new Chief Minister, while Union Minister Raosaheb DanvePatil claimed that his BJP will form a new government within next 2 to 3 days.

Union minister Raosaheb Danve on Sunday
said the ruling Maha Vikas Aghadi in Maharashtra, racked by rebellion in main constituent Shiv Sena, will last “two to three days”. Speaking at the inaugural function of an agriculture department building here in the presence of state NCP minister Rajesh Tope, the BJP leader said the MVA should complete remaining development works at the earliest as “we (BJP) will be in opposition only for two to three days”. “Time is running out. This government will last for two to three days. The BJP has nothing to do with this rebellion. Shiv Sena rebels have resentment towards Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray as development funds were diverted by NCP and Congress,” the Union Minister of State for Railway, Coal and Mines said.
and returned to his private home. Sena MP and Chief Spokesperson Sanjay Raut dared the breakaway faction to “quit your legislature seats and face the electorate again” if they had the guts. “If you are the son of ‘one father’, then show courage, resign your seats, come face us and fight elections against us. We shall defeat all of you,” vowed Raut. He said that just because “the rebels have got Rs 50 crore” doesn’t mean that the Shiv Sena is exterminated, vowing the party will fight out and emerge from the mega-crisis threatening to dislodge the MVA. He said that Shinde lost the post of CM because of the Opposition Bharatiya Janata Party’s machinations in 2019. “Shinde would have been made the CM if the BJP had not backtracked on its formula of sharing the top post for two-and-half years with the Sena after the 2019 elections. If BJP
had honoured the understanding, Shinde could have become the CM then,” said Raut. Later, the MVA was born with the three-party alliance - Sena- Nationalist Congress Party-Congress and it was at the insistence of NCP President Sharad Pawar and Congress Congress President Sonia Gandhi that Thackeray landed the CM’s post. “Shinde forfeited the post of CM because of the same BJP he is now terming as a ‘Maha-Shakti’ and trying to destroy the Shiv Sena,” said Raut as part of the Sena’s mass-contact drive in the past three days in different parts of Mumbai. The Aditya-Raut duo also targeted several other MLAs and ministers -- who pretended to be very close to the Thackeray family and behaved like party loyalists -but “suddenly backstabbed” to leave the same party now which did a lot for them in their lives and political careers.
NEW DELHI, JUNE 26 (IANS): The Supreme Court on Monday will hear petitions by rebel Shiv Sena leader Eknath Shinde and the MLAs challenging the disqualification notices issued by Maharashtra Deputy Speaker to them and also the appointment of Ajay Choudhari as Shiv Sena Legislature Party leader. A vacation bench of Justices Surya Kant and J.B. Pardiwala will hear the petitions filed by Shina and rebel MLAs led by Bharat Gogawali against the Deputy Speaker. Shinde claims to enjoy support of two-third members of the party. Maharashtra has been facing a political crisis after Shinde and rebel MLAs left the state, protesting against the alliance with the Congress and Nationalist Congress Party. The rebel MLAs have been camping in a hotel in Assam’s Guwahati for the past few days. The Deputy Speaker had issued notices
to the 16 rebel MLAs on the disqualification plea by Thackeray’s team. Shinde claims the actions of the Deputy Speaker show he is hand in glove with the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government. Shinde’s plea said the disqualification notices issued by the Deputy Speaker is completely violative of Article 14 and 19(1)(g) of the Constitution, and also the illegal and unconstitutional action of the Deputy Speaker in recognising Choudhuri as the leader of the Shiv Sena Legislature Party (SSLP) despite the said request being admittedly made by a minority faction. The plea said the petitioner is aggrieved by the notice/summon dated June 25 which is grossly illegal, unconstitutional and in utter disregard of the judgment of this Court in the matter of Nabam Rebia & Bamang Felix Vs Dy. Speaker, Arunachal Pradesh
Legislative Assembly in (2016). “That the seat of Speaker is vacant since Nana Patole resigned from office in February 2021. Thus, there is no authority who can adjudicate upon the disqualification petition under which the impugned notice has been issued to the Petitioner,” it added. The rebel leaders urged the apex court to prohibit the Deputy Speaker from taking any action under the anti-defection law (10th Schedule of the Constitution) and issue direction against taking any action until the resolution for removal of Deputy Speaker is decided. “Issue a writ of prohibition/mandamus or any other appropriate writ, direction or order, directing Respondent No. 1 (Deputy Speaker) to not take any action in the disqualification petition under Rule 6 of MLA Defection Rules.
Stop playing with future of youths: Cong to govt on Agnipath TWENTY SENIOR CONGRESS LEADERS AND SPOKESPERSONS ADDRESSED PRESS CONFERENCES NEW DELHI, JUN 26 (PTI): Stepping up its attack on the government over the Agnipath scheme, the Congress on Sunday said the Modi government is playing with the future of the youth by bringing in the new military recruitment plan and it must withdraw this “Tughlaqi” decision. Twenty senior Congress leaders and spokespersons addressed press conferences titled ‘Agnipath ki Baat: Yuwaon se Vishwasghaat’ in as many cities and demanded the withdrawal of the scheme, citing risk to national security and discontent among the youth. The Congress said it will also hold a nationwide protest in every assembly constituency against this “anti-youth and anti-national” scheme “bulldozed through without discus-

sion”. Addressing a press conference here, Congress spokesperson Shaktisinh Gohil said the Congress is standing with the youth and this “Tughlaqi decision” should be withdrawn immediately. Muhammad bin Tughlaq, who ruled the Delhi Sultanate for a short
period of time in the 14th century, was known for his controversial decisions. “At a time when China has entered our borders... this (Agnipath scheme) is like playing with national security,” Gohil said. “I demand from the prime minister that Agnipath be withdrawn and
all those ministers or BJP spokespersons who say that the Agnipath scheme is good, they should get their sons and daughters recruited under the Agnipath scheme,” he said. Gohil also demanded an apology from Prime Minister Narendra Modi over BJP leader Kailash Vijayvargiya’s remarks apparently suggesting that he will give priority to ‘Agniveers’ for security jobs at his party office. “The leader who said that Agniveers will be employed in BJP offices as guards should be sacked by the prime minister and the PM must apologise,” Gohil said. Addressing a press conference at the PCC headquarters in Jaipur, Congress Rajya Sabha MP from Haryana Deepender Singh Hooda also attacked the Centre
over the Agnipath scheme and called the government a “copycat” for importing ideas from foreign nations to draft policies. “The government has adopted the attitude of a ‘Nakalchi Bandar (copycat)’ but this is Hindustan. Sometimes it gives the example of America in the context of agriculture laws and at other times talks about Israel in reference to military service,” he said. Several parts of the country witnessed protests after the announcement of the Agnipath scheme on June 14. The scheme seeks to recruit in the armed forces youths in the age bracket of 17-and-half to 21 years for only four years with a provision to retain 25 per cent of them for 15 more years. For 2022, the upper age limit has been extended to 23 years.

People will punish EPS camp: AIADMK leader Panneerselvam
MADURAI (TN), JUN 26 (PTI): Hitting out at the rival Edappadi K Palaniswami camp, AIADMK leader O Panneerselvam on Sunday said ‘cadres are on my side’, and asserted that people and party workers would punish his detractors. Party workers are on my side, Panneerselvam (OPS) told reporters here and added that he would also always be with the cadres. On his arrival here, enroute to his home district of Theni, OPS was accorded a warm welcome by his supporters. Apparently slamming Joint Coordinator Palaniswami’s (EPS) camp for seeking to elbow him out of his position of party Coordinator, Panneerselvam said the people of Tamil Nadu and cadres would teach a fitting lesson and punish those who

were behind the ‘web of conspiracy’, and for being responsible for the current ‘extraordinary situation’ in the party. The AIADMK had days ago said that the General Council would meet again on July 11 and EPS would be made the single, supreme leader. The war of words between the dominant EPS and sidelined OPS factions continued and they blamed each other.
Saturday, she had been taken to the Santacruz police station in Mumbai for informing the local police about her detention. From there, the Gujarat police squad
brought her to Ahmedabad by road, where they reached in the early hours. The action against Setalvad had come a day after the Supreme Court on Friday dismissed a petition challenging the clean chit given by the Special Investigation Team (SIT) to former Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi and others in the 2002 post-Godhra riots cases. Setalvad, who is the secretary of NGO Citizens for Justice and Peace, is also accused of conspiring to fabricate facts and documents, tutor witnesses and abuse the process of law by fabricating false evidence to frame people, on the basis of submissions made before the SIT formed by
the Supreme Court to investigate the 2002 Gujarat riots cases and before the Justice Nanavati-Shah Commission of Inquiry. Setalvad and her NGO were co-petitioner with Zakia Jafri in the petition filed against Modi and others in the Supreme Court. However, the apex court dismissed the petition on Friday and upheld the clean chit given to Modi and others. Jafri’s husband and former Congress MP Ehsan Jafri was killed during the riots. The FIR registered Setalvad was detained on the basis of an FIR registered on Saturday which accused her and two former IPS officers - R B Sreekumar and Sanjiv Bhatt.

AHMEDABAD, JUN 26 (PTI): A day after detaining social activist Teesta Setalvad in Mumbai, the Gujarat Anti-Terrorist Squad (ATS) handed her over to the Ahmedabad crime branch early on Sunday in connection with a fresh case of forgery, criminal conspiracy and insulting criminal proceedings to cause injury registered against her. Setalvad was detained from her house in Juhu area of Mumbai on Saturday afternoon after an FIR was registered against her at the Ahmedabad crime branch earlier in the day based on a complaint lodged by a crime branch inspector D B Barad. “After being brought here, Setalvad was handed

OPINION/EDITORIAL
Nagaland Post VOL. XXXII NO. 201 DIMAPUR, MONDAY, JUNE 27, 2022
A
Giving rules the slip
fter around 21 days of agitation, the Nagaland Assembly Secretariat Staff Association (NASSA)/Joint Action Committee, called off its stir after the retired and reemployed secretary Nagaland Legislative Assembly Dr.P.J. Alexander resigned thereby ending the stalemate. The issue raised by the NASSA was based on facts that exposed the degree of injustice that the state government was willing to commit in order to promote nepotism. According to NASSA, Dr. P.J. Alexander was brought on deputation as secretary from the Lok Sabha secretariat for a period of five (5) months w.e.f January 2,2020. Dr. Alexander’s contract employment expired on May 31,2020 but was extended through re-appointment to the upgraded post of commissioner & secretary for an extended contract period of two years from June 1,2020 to May 31,2022. The Nagaland Assembly Secretariat Staff Association (NAASSA) and Joint Action Committee submitted a representation dated June 23,2020 opposing the third re-appointment of Dr. Alexander. NAASSA pointed out that the reappointment of a twice retired official violated the government memorandum dated March 15,2012 that such reappointments affected the rights of sub-ordinate officers and lowered the morale of assembly secretariat employees. The NAASSA also submitted a representation to the assembly speaker on April 21,2022 against extension of service of Dr. Alexander as the Administrative Head of the Assembly Secretariat besides meeting with the Speaker at his office chamber on May 6,2022. NAASSA also submitted another representation on the same matter on May 9,2022 to the assembly speaker. However, despite objections based on relevant service rules, the government issued a notification on May 18,2022 circulated on May 21,2022 containing an amendment to the Service Rules of the NLAS. The government inserted a clause in its amendment without consulting the Cadre Review Committee by ignoring the interests of the officers in service. As commented earlier, the amendment contained a glaring clause whereby the extended service of a superannuated officer was fixed at 65 years. This was totally against the existing government policy where superannuation was at 60 years. The above instance, among several other controversial appointments made by the government of Nagaland only go to show that the rules are bent at will without any thought of the wrong precedence set. It is only fitting that the main players and those at the higher levels responsible for the controversial amendment be held accountable. The stranglehold of the political establishment under the hegemony of leaders who have shown scant regard for the rules and regulations has become more of a rule than the exception. Decisions appear to be made purely to serve powerful vested interests rather than ensuring protection of the interest of the ordinary people. Several service associations have been agitating for justice during the past many years. Controversial decisions made by the cabinet do not arise out of nowhere. Most controversial decisions are initiated and justified by bureaucrats who are more than willing to fill in the blanks at the whims of their political masters. The ‘anything goes’ syndrome within the establishment has thoroughly damaged the administrative governance system. This has led to loss of confidence in the government as public have become cynical and that is perhaps why there are so many agitations and ultimatums on the government to reverse decisions.
DailyDevotion Drawing on the Grace of God— Now
We…plead with you not to receive the grace of God in vain. —2 Corinthians 6:1 The grace you had yesterday will not be sufficient for today. Grace is the overflowing favor of God, and you can always count on it being available to draw upon as needed. “…in much patience, in tribulations, in needs, in distresses”— that is where our patience is tested (2 Corinthians 6:4). Are you failing to rely on the grace of God there? Are you saying to yourself, “Oh well, I won’t count this time”? It is not a question of praying and asking God to help you— it is taking the grace of God now. We tend to make prayer the preparation for our service, yet it is never that in the Bible. Prayer is the practice of drawing on the grace of God. Don’t say, “I will endure this until I can get away and pray.” Pray now — draw on the grace of God in your moment of need. Prayer is the most normal and useful thing; it is not simply a reflex action of your devotion to God. We are very slow to learn to draw on God’s grace through prayer. “…in stripes, in imprisonments, in tumults, in labors…” (2 Corinthians 6:5)— in all these things, display in your life a drawing on the grace of God, which will show evidence to yourself and to others that you are a miracle of His. Draw on His grace now, not later. The primary word in the spiritual vocabulary is now. Let circumstances take you where they will, but keep drawing on the grace of God in whatever condition you may find yourself. One of the greatest proofs that you are drawing on the grace of God is that you can be totally humiliated before others without displaying even the slightest trace of anything but His grace. “…having nothing….” Never hold anything in reserve. Pour yourself out, giving the best that you have, and always be poor. Never be diplomatic and careful with the treasure God gives you. “…and yet possessing all things”— this is poverty triumphant (2 Corinthians 6:10).

FPI bleeds Rs 2.71 lakh crore, LIC, MFs risks soar in shaky market
T
he US deep recession, Federal Bank rate hikes, European Union uncertainties and Russia-Ukraine war are bleeding stock markets of Rs 2.71 lakh crore in eight months posing severe challenge to Indian economy risking public deposits. If the western economies slip into a recession, one additional challenge may arise for the Indian economy. It can severely hit its exports prospects “This is an anticipated outcome of their policy response of raising interest rates to manage the unprecedented inflation levels that they are currently experiencing,” Ernst and Young said in its recent update. The risk of the US economy tumbling into recession over the next year has doubled following the Federal Reserve’s 75 basispoint interest-rate hike last week, says Goldman Sachs. It says in a note that the chance of a recession hitting in the next 12 months has risen from 15 percent before the rate hike, to 30 percent as of this week. As the economy slumps and the interest rates are hiked, foreign portfolio investors (FPI) are moving their investments back to the
US. Heavy outflows of FPI money from India in the last one year exceed that during the global financial crisis (GFC) of 2008, analysts at ICICI Securities say. The ongoing FPI selling in Indian equities is turning out to be the highest selling spree since the global financial crisis (GFC) of 2008 at $36 billion against $28 billion during the GFC. However, inflows from domestic institutional investors into shaky market have been constant while benchmark indices are down just around 10 percent compared to more than 50 percent in 2008. The sell off that began in August, 2021 and with brief lull in September continues since October. The FPI pull-out has hit the rupee, with its exchange rate against the dollar falling to Rs 781.8 despite heavy RBI intervention. Bankr uptcy in the Euro region is deeper than explained. The latest voyage of the world’s biggest unfinished cruiser to shipbreaking yard because of the lack of a buyer is a testimony that the malaise is deeper. During fiscal 2021-22, India borrowed the most from the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development at Rs 22,362 crore, followed by Asian Development Bank at Rs 16802 crore and the Government of Japan at Rs 9835 crore. During the week ended February 25, India’s foreign currency assets declined by $ 2.22 billion. Since then more of it was lost in managing the rupee and the external sector. The rupee remains under pressure. This is a call for severe caution. The void of the FPIs is being filled up by domestic institutional investors (DIIs), led by LIC, mutual funds and insurance companies. They are absorbing most of the FPI sales to keep the stock market maintain a semblance but it is an artificial support for virtually subsidizing the domestic companies, whose valuations are on an apparent roll. In other words, public money is being pumped into shaky private operations further debilitating the public institutions. The institutions are
supposed to take independent decisions. But this kind of operations pushing them into risky operations is questionable. Most of these organisations, now particularly LIC, are in high risk of losing people’s deposits. The RBI, SEBI and other regulators need to step in to check such deals and purchases as the market value of many corporate with high ECBs as also domestic borrowings are suspect. What appears innocuous withdrawal of some foreign companies have deep sense of hurt. It calls for a decision at the level of top regulators as also the ministry of finance to check the quality of investments being made in the risky assets. Stocks prices are mostly notional and speculative – based on the premise that it would have gains. Since 1992, the innumerable crashes or scams were based on these premises. Severe caution is needed at this hour as even an innocuous repeat of a failure can shear the Indian economy of billions, if not trillions. What looks like a US or Euro recession if not treaded cautiously could have deleterious effect. Stitch in time is the best medicine.

Polity and economy intersects: philanthropy a flash in point
illionaires who run the global corporations’ control – from agriculture to industrial to technology to medicine to education to entertainment and all human activities which entail our lives – what should we eat, drink and dress. The entire gamut of production, distribution and consumption are in the hands of these oligopolistic transnational corporations (TNCs). Their control over technology, technical know-how and technology transfers and also media including social media adds absolute control over everything including our thought processes. The wealth of these billionaires exceeds countries that are poor and underdeveloped. Having absolute control over economy, labor, production, distribution and consumption that determines the functioning of any society makes them to influence governments’ policies and programs. Over the years, these billionaires in association with the bureaucracy and those who govern the countries of the world made the people to believe that entrepreneurs and those who control capitals are indispensable – without them economy and society shall never run and so be
A
t the initial stages of so-called Russian “military operation” on Ukraine, a retired Army Chief of India, interviewed on a TV Channel for his comment on the War said the result of the War is a forgone conclusion, that the state of Ukraine is nowhere near any match to Super Power Russia. Therefore, he advised Ukraine to submit to ‘the Russian domination’ and save Ukraine from utter devastation. This has a Fairy similarity with the story of ‘The Three Little Pigs’ let out for the first time by their mother to see the wide world. The youngest was a little restless and soon decided to build a house of his own. He collected straw and built a house and went to sleep. A Fox was roaming about in search of food and coming to smelling a piglet said: “Little Pig, open the door and let me in, otherwise I will huff and I will puff your house down and get you”. But the little pig said: “No, No, No: not with the whiskers of my chinny chin” And while the Fox was ranting from the outside, the little pig quickly got out of the house from the back side and ran into the ‘house of sticks’ of his middle brother. There, the Fox also ran after him and said:
taken maximum advantage and thus be given concessions and privileges. Having established the fact that they are the engines of growth and backbone of countries’ development, progress, growth and prosperity which the leaders of countries of the world affirm and endorse that polity is indeed dependent on economy and vice versa and so politics and economics compliments one another which dismisses the very basis and assumption that economics is to be left on its own and politics should never meddle with laws of economic fundamentals. Therefore, politics and economics are indeed the core factor that are to be reckoned with. And so, there is a clandestine understanding between politicians and capitalists. A classic and flashy example to illustrate the point of how politics and economy weave together are Asia’s richest man Gautam Adani and India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Gautam Adani’s family has pledge Rs. 60,000 crores towards charity to mark the 60th birthday, marking one of the biggest philanthropic commitments in India thus far. The Adani Group
founder and chairman turned 60 on the 24th of June 2022. Adani in his statement said: “In addition to being the 100th anniversary of my inspiring father, this year also happens to be the year of my 60th birthday and therefore the family decided to contribute Rs. 60,000 crores ($7.7 billion) towards charitable activities related to health care, education and skill development in the rural region.” The Adani foundation helmed by Adani and his immediate family will administer the corpus. He plans to rope in sectoral experts to lead each initiative. His pledge of Rs. 60,000 crores which is about $7.7 billion is equivalent to about 9 percent of Adani’s net worth of Rs. 7.16 lakh crores as of 23rd June, 2022. Ranked as number one in Asia and ranked as the 11th richest man in the world, he opened the gates of philanthropy in India. If this is background, how does economy meet polity? A classic and flashy case that happened in recent times is that an official document has been in the Sri Lankan Finance Ministry’s records since November, 2021. In it, Sri Lanka’s electricity board chief says that a project by
Adani Group in Sri Lanka was backed by the Indian government. It was in fact seen, as a ‘G-G’, i.e., Government to Government proposal. He has also mentioned about Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s allegedly putting pressure on Sri Lanka’s President Gotabaya Rajapaksa to give green signal to Adani’s deal. Deals are mutually agreed upon and made to realize in practical terms so as to enhance interests of each other. Entrepreneurs want to maximize his/her wealth, while political leaders harvest the deals by ways of donations to their political parties, remittances, deposits, luxury trips, private jets, resorts and many others. Can we call this a nexus or symbiosis? While pledging $7.7 billion which is equivalent to Rs. 60,000 crores for charity initiatives and works, Adani’s family has shown strong philanthropic interests. For instance, in fiscal 2021, Adani donated Rs. 130 crores towards disaster relief, ranking him eighth in the EdelGive Harun India philanthropy list. While Adani Foundation donated Rs. 122 crores to fight the coronavirus pandemic across the country. With the latest
The fairy tale of three little pigs
“Little Pigs, little Pigs, let me in, or I will huff and puff your house and get you”. But the pigs replied: “No, No, No: not with the whiskers of our chinny chin.” And while the Fox was bombastically ranting, the two little pigs got out by the other side of the house and ran as fast as they could into the ‘house of bricks’ of their eldest brother and immediately locked the door. The Fox ran after the two but being on empty stomach, he was tired and reached the house panting; and said: “Little Pigs, little Pigs, let me in, otherwise; I will huff and I will puff your house down and get you.” But the pigs said: “No, No, No: not by the whisker of our chinny chin”. The Fox snarled, bared its teeth and scratched the door with its Paws but the wood door would not give in. Then he took a ladder and climbed up the roof of the house intending to go down the hole and get the pigs inside. While the Fox was scratching the chimney top on the roof of the house, the pigs placed a big Pot of water in the fireplace, made a blazing fire and boiled the water. And while the Fox slid down the Chimney hole, they removed the lid of the pot of boiling water and there in the Fox fell into.
Then, the three little pigs quickly closed the pot with the lid and had a hearty dinner thereafter! Some may not have heard this little engaging story from the Children’s Book, and some other tired-bloods like this Writer would even like to hear it again for an interesting light moment; therefore it is here in a condensed form for that! Indeed Russia and Ukraine are mismatched out of all proportions: Russia the biggest country in the World, about one-fourth the size of the world, deadly armed with nuclear weapons and proudly puffing and huffing at the world; on the other hand, Ukraine, an independent, sovereign State, gave up all its nuclear arms in exchange of a hopeful future of free peaceful democratic existence. War however, is not always decided by the size of the Army, or the size of the country: Gideon, the leader of the Jews settling in Canan, on the instruction from God, downsized his Army from 32,000 to 10,000 against 135,000 Amalekite confederates. Yet God asked Gideon to cut his army still further; and so Gideon selected 300 soldiers and sent the rest home. Then Gideon personally led his men at dead of the night and attacked the enemy camp, completely routing the Amalekites and
its Allies. Alexander the Great of Greece, with only 10,000 chosen Greek soldiers with special long spears completely overran whole kingdoms in the North of Africa, Europe, the whole of Middle East up to India in Asia and established the Greek Empire. Everybody in Asia expected the Persian King Darius with more than 200,000 [two hundred thousands] veteran Soldiers, would easily defeat the Greek invader. The Battle at Marathon was grave; many died, more were injured and maimed; only a few Greek soldiers were left to carry home the unexpected message of victory to their Emperor. Exhausted Survivors of the battle straggled for home to meet their loved ones, but many would not reach their homes; many collapsed on the way and could only tell to those coming after them saying: “When you go home, tell them of us and say: ‘For theirs tomorrow, we gave ours today’”. O n ly o n e S p a r t a n Greek ran the whole distance of 26 miles 385 yards and told the King the victory over the Persians after which Phidephite fell down and died. The world today produces many distance runners in record time, but nobody can replace the
move, Adani joins notable pledgers like Meta (Facebook parent) CEO Mark Zuckerberg, Berkshire Hathaway CEO Warren Buffet and Blackstone CEO Stephen Schwarzman who have committed to give a significant part of their wealth to Philanthropy. Is it a ‘philanthropic globalization’? The dynamic between polity and economy is such that vibrant. As a result, it is always reverberating and rewarding. It is nothing but a nexus that works out well and in the process both mutually benefits. Recently we have seen in the ‘vaccine brand push’ global pharmaceutical corporations and vaccine manufacturers were competing with each other and the political clout agreeing upon particular brands over others. It is big business and huge stakes are involved and major forces into it especially when politics and economics come together. As we move on these two, polity and economy tend to be natural allies showing inter-dependency – parasitical alliance. What we perceive and come across in all these are just a tip of the iceberg. instance of the first soldier who ran the distance and immortalized the Marathon race! Putin -in violation of United Nation’s Charter and without provocation, with 150,000 soldiers, 20,000 Tanks- invaded the State of Ukraine, a sovereign independent peaceful neighbour, and in expectation of seizing it in a few days like he did with Crimea, and the whole world simply stood just like a dumb person! But Ukraine’s President Volodymir Zelenskyy refused to surrender and fired his Nation’s resolve to fight the invaders even with Shovels. Of the 195 UN Member States, 145 voted for the Resolution condemning Russia for the invasion of Ukraine, 3 States [Russia, China and Cuba?] voted against, and 45 including India abstained from the UN Resolution; yet the world condemned Russia for the invasion of Ukraine. Putin continued to flatten Ukrainian buildings, factories, Store, houses, civilian housing flats, Hospitals, Schools and Institutions. Yet he bit off more than he could swallow and tactically withdrew from Kyiv and other Northern areas to concentrate on the East and the South. The free Nations of Europe, of Asia and the Far East have all woken up against to the domineering huffs & puffs of Putin
of Russia. The fighting in Ukraine doesn’t seem to end too soon: Two Bulls in one and the same field can’t easily become Friends; and Putin unknowingly unified long term forces of Democracy in the Continents of Europe, in the Americas and in Africa; very significantly in Asia, Taipei, Japan, Singapore, South Korea, Australia, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Vietnam, Philippines and unnumbered African Nations, as never before in the history of mankind. Today Asia has three continent-sized supper power Nations of the world: Russia, China and India. They are some of the oldest civilizations of the world: and they also share one thing starkly in common: ‘None of them had Democracy for millenniums before, except for 200 years of British Rule of India in the last two centuries. I. Election Process alone doesn’t make a Nation democratic. II. The trend of governance in Russia, in China and of India today doesn’t augur democracy for sure in the future. III. NEW DELHI, JUN 26 (PTI): The BJP on Sunday bagged one Lok Sabha and three assembly seats, while the Aam Aadmi Party suffered a setback in Punjab’s Sangrur as results came in for the bypolls to three Lok Sabha and seven assembly seats spread across five states and Delhi. However, there was something to cheer about for the AAP as it won the bypoll to the Rajinder Nagar seat in the national capital. In the bypolls for the two Lok Sabha seats in Uttar Pradesh, the BJP won the Rampur seat and appeared set to wrest Azamgarh. In Andhra Pradesh, the ruling YSR Congress is racing ahead in the by-election to Atmakuru Assembly constituency with its candidate establishing a clear lead of over 50,000 votes, while in Jharkhand, BJP candidate Gangotri Kujur was leading marginally as votes were being counted for the Mandar by-election. The BJP consolidated its position in Tripura winning three of the four assembly seats. Chief Minister Manik Saha secured 17,181 votes, which is 51.63 per cent of the total votes polled. “The people who voted for me, I thank them. This is the victory of BJP workers. I expected the margin to be a bit more. However, the results prove the understanding between the CPI(M) and Congress. We will work accordingly in the future, but people did not take this understanding in a good way,” the chief minister told reporters. Congress candidate Sudip Roy Barman won the Agartala seat by a margin of 3,163 votes. He secured 17,241 votes, which is 43.46 per cent of the total votes polled. He said censorship was so stringent that nothing could be published without approval. “I remember when famous singer Kishore Kumar ji refused to praise the government, he was banned, he was not allowed on radio,” the prime minister said. Rights were snatched during Emergency: PM
NEW DELHI, JUN 26 (PTI): Targeting the Congress, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Sunday that attempts were made to “crush democracy” during the Emergency imposed in 1975, and asserted that it is difficult to find another example in the world where people defeated a “dictatorial mindset” through democratic means. In his ‘Mann Ki Baat’ radio broadcast, Modi also lauded India’s feats in the space sector and cited creation of “In-Space” which is promoting opportunities in the space sector for the private sector. Speaking about the Emergency a day after its 47th anniversary, he noted that all rights, including the right to life and personal liberty, were snatched away and controls were imposed on all institutions, including judiciary and media. Emergency was announced in the country on June 25, 1975 when Indira Gandhi was the prime minister, and was lifted on March 21, 1977. “During the Emergency, all rights were snatched away.

2022 Mahindra Scorpio-N to be launched today
NEW DELHI, JUN 26 (PTI): Foreign investors continue to desert Indian equity markets and pulled out close to Rs 46,000 crore so far this month following monetary policy tightening by the Reserve Bank and US Federal Reserve, high oil prices and volatile rupee. The net outflow by foreign portfolio investors (FPIs) from equities reached Rs 2.13 lakh crore unitll now in 2022, data with depositories showed. Given the policy normalisation narrative by the US Fed and other major central banks, coupled with high oil prices and volatile Rupee, FPIs are likely to stay away from emerging market assets, Hitesh Jain, Lead Analyst - Institutional Equities, Yes Securities, said. FPIs inflow will only resume once there is visibility on the peak of bond yields in the US and an end to Fed rate hikes, he added. Moreover, FPIs are likely to sell more if the current trend of rising dollar and bond yields persists, said VK Vijayakumar, Cheif Investment Strategist at Geojit Financial Services. According to the data, foreign investors withdrew a net amount of Rs 45,841 crore from equities in June (till 24th).

Drug users rising in Nagaland (From p-1) Silas Care Centre director Nuklu Longkumer emphasised that the SCC required completion of full rehab course instead of giving detoxification camps for a few days. Nuklu said detoxification was not viable since drug users were not taught holistically to handle life’s challenges and when the craving returns, they relapse into the hold habit. This Correspondent also talked with clinical psychiatrist and consultant psychiatrist at Nikos Hospi-
tal here Dr Ayang Longchar who explained the harmful effects of drugs and substance abuse. Dr Ayang Longchar said opiods like brown sugar or SF powder induces a very intense but brief euphoria called the “rush” followed by a profound sense of tranquillity lasting several hours. This is followed by drowsiness, mood swings, mental clouding, apathy and slow motor movements. She said the long-term effects of the drug induced psychotic, manic features
that result in anxiety and depression. These also lead to bursts of uncontrolled anger and aggression and prolonged use also causes kidney problems, TB, druginduced hepatitis, HIV, Hepatitis B and C, etc. “No drug is less or more dangerous than the other. Any drug used in more quantities is harmful. Weed or marijuana taken in large quantities and on daily basis affects chemicals in the brain, which can lead to all sorts of mental disorders, including schizophrenia, mania, depression,
bipolar disorder, etc,” she was categorical. A member of Narcotics Anonymous (NA) who had remained drug-free for more than 10 years claimed that rehab helped him get back to reality and also instilled in him a sense of discipline. He said after giving up the habit, he has regain self-respect by building relationship with God. The former drug user also advised those who wanted to kick the habit, to not live in denial but “accept” their condition and seek help.

(From p-1) In his speech, horticulture & border affairs adviser Mhathung Yanthan expressed gratitude on behalf of the State to Union Ministry of Agriculture & Farmers’ Welfare (MoA&FW) for its continued support towards the welfare of farmers by launching various programmes/schemes. He said climate change had posed a huge challenge to farming practices, thereby imperilling food security worldwide. Therefore, he called for understanding the impacts of climate change and try to draft strategies to mitigate the same through adaptation to minimise effects on crops and cropping system. Backing Tomar’s observation, Yanthan too remarked that Nagaland had huge potential in horticulture crops like pineapple, orange, cucumber, passion fruit, dragon fruit, kiwi, banana, large cardamom, ginger, etc. Informing the gathering of the various initiatives undertaken by the Department of Horticulture, he said the State now had three crops now had Geographical Indication (GI) – Naga tree tomato, Naga mirchi and Naga cucumber. ed, and police later said one person was killed. Russia has stepped up air strikes on Ukraine this weekend, which has also seen the fall of a strategic eastern city to pro-Russian forces. “It’s more of their barbarism,” said Biden, referring to the missile strikes on Kyiv, as leaders from the Group of Seven (G7) rich democracies gathered for a summit in Germany.
N.Korea holds anti-American rally to mark war anniversary SEOUL, JUN 26 (IANS): North Korea held an antiAmerican rally for the third day in a row to mark the 72nd anniversary of the outbreak of the 1950-53 Korean War, with participants vowing to “mercilessly annihilate” the US if it provokes Pyongyang, state media reported on Sunday. The North has held anti-US rallies since Thursday to mark the war anniversary for the first time in five years, reports Yonhap News Agency. Pyongyang skipped such rallies in 2018 amid a thaw in relations with the US and had not resumed them amid the Covid-19 pandemic. “The speakers vehemently denounced the US imperialists for provoking the Korean War to nip in the bud the young DPRK less than two years after
its foundation and perpetrating the most hideous massacre and barbaric destruction unprecedented in the world war history,” the North’s official KCNA said in a report. “They stressed that if the US imperialists dare provoke the DPRK again, oblivious of their bitter defeat in the 1950s, the latter will mercilessly annihilate the imperialists by mobilizing all the invincible physical means it has so far bolstered up,” KCNA said. DPRK stands for the North’s official name, Democratic People’s Republic of Korea. Saturday’s rally was held in front of the Victorious Fatherland Liberation War Museum, which was established to commemorate what Pyongyang calls its victory in the Korean War.
U k r a i n e ’s Fo r e i g n Minister Dmytro Kuleba said G7 countries should respond to the latest missile strikes by imposing further sanctions on Russia and providing more heavy weapons to Ukraine. As Europe’s biggest land conflict since World War Two entered its fifth month, the Western alliance supporting Kyiv was starting to show signs of strain as leaders fret about
the growing economic cost. British Prime Minister Boris Johnson said the West needed to maintain a united front against Russian President Vladimir Putin. “The price of backing down, the price of allowing Putin to succeed, to hack off huge parts of Ukraine, to continue with his programme of conquest, that price will be far, far higher,” he told reporters. MISSILES HIT CENTRAL CITY Life had been returning to normal in Kyiv after fierce resistance held off Russian advances in the early phase of the war, although air raid sirens regularly sound across the city. There had been no major strikes on Kyiv since early June. The city’s mayor, Vitali Klitschko, said on the Telegram messaging app that Sunday’s strike had partially destroyed a ninestorey apartment building in the historic Shevchenkivskiy district of central Kyiv and caused a fire. “There are people un-

Cholera outbreak in Kathmandu, city puts ban on selling Panipuri KATHMANDU, JUN 26 (IANS): Kathmandu, the capital city of Nepal is now facing another outbreak of cholera. At least 12 people have been infected with the disease as of Sunday and officials are struggling to contain the outbreak. The cases of cholera have been found in several parts of the city and health officials are still unaware of the source of the outbreak. The water sources in many areas were found to contain cholera bacteria. Meanwhile, Lalitpur, an adjunct city of Kathmandu has banned selling panipuri and chatpate from Sunday fearing cholera. The Lalitpur Metropolitan City (LMC) has decided to stop the sale and distribution of Pani-
puri and Chatpate in the metropolis from Saturday. LMC has banned the sale of Panipuri and chatpate, claiming that cholera bacteria were found in the water used in Panipuri. According to Municipal Police Chief Sitaram Hachethu, the police have been asking people not to sell Panipuri in the streets and alleys of the metropolis on Sunday. Hachethu said that the metropolis has made internal preparations to stop the sale of Panipuri in the crowded areas, stating that there is an increased risk of spreading cholera in the Kathmandu Valley. The city will not allow any stalls to be set up on the roads of Lalitpur starting on Monday, informs Hachethu.
C O LO M B O, J U N 2 6 (PTI): Crisis-hit Sri Lanka is exploring options to purchase oil from Russia, a senior minister said on Sunday, as the island nation desperately looks to replenish its dwindling fuel stocks amid an unprecedented economic crisis due to a crippling shortage of foreign exchange reserves. On Sunday, petrol price was hiked by LKR 50 and diesel by LKR 60 respectively, the third price revision in just over two months. The move was necessitated after state-owned refinery Ceylon Petroleum Corporation informed the Sri Lankan government on Saturday that there would be a delay in the arrival of fuel shipments due to banking and logistical reasons. Given the grim scenario, Sri Lanka’s Power and Energy Minister Kanchana Wijesekera insisted that the government was explor-

Our first letter of credit was rejected by international banks because the ship was owned by a Russian company,” Wijesekera told reporters on Sunday. He said that two ministers are scheduled to travel to Russia on Monday to discuss fuel and other diplomatic-related matters. Last week, the Sri Lankan government had reached out to several com-
PM Modi interacts with Indian diaspora in Germany
MUNICH, JUN 26 (PTI): Terming the imposition of the Emergency in 1975 a “black spot” on the vibrant history of India’s democracy, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday targeted the Congress Party and said that democracy, which is in the DNA of every Indian, was trampled and suppressed 47 years ago, but the people answered the conspiracies to crush it in a democratic way. Prime Minister Modi, who is visiting Germany to attend the G7 Summit, made the remarks while addressing thousands of members of the Indian community at a grand event held at the Audi Dome stadium in Munich. “Today is June 26 which is also known as the day when India’s democracy, which is in the DNA of every Indian, was trampled and suppressed 47 years ago. Emergency is a black spot on the vibrant history of India’s democracy,” Modi

Emergency was announced in India on June 25, 1975 when Congress leader Indira Gandhi was the prime minister, and was lifted on March 21, 1977. “The people of India answered all the conspiracies to crush democracy in a democratic way. UK PM claims to be on track to win next election
LONDON, JUN 26 (PTI): British Prime Minister Boris Johnson on Sunday angered many of his Conservative Party colleagues with bold claims of being on track to lead the governing party at the next general election, despite a growing rebellion against his leadership following scathing defeats in two important by-elections. Johnson has been putting up a strong defence in the face of criticism after voters punished the Conservatives over the partygate scandal and rising cost of living crisis by voting for Opposition Labour and Liberal Democrats in the byelections earlier this week. With these by-polls seen as a de facto referendum on his leadership, the UK PM was asked by
der the rubble,” Klitschko said. “They have pulled out a seven-year-old girl. She is alive. Now they’re trying to rescue her mother.” A Ukrainian air force spokesperson said the strike was carried out with between four to six long-range missiles fired from Russian bombers more than 1,000 kilometres away in the southern Russian region of Astrakhan. He said some of the incoming missiles were shot down. Two Russian missiles also struck the central city of Cherkasy, which until now had been largely untouched by bombardment, according to regional authorities, who said one person had been killed and five others wounded. Russia’s defence ministry said it had used highprecision weapons to strike Ukrainian army training centres in the regions of Chernihiv, Zhytomyr and Lviv, an apparent reference to strikes reported by Ukraine on Saturday.
he told reporters. A Downing Street source later suggested he may have been joking. Earlier, in a BBC interview, Johnson said: “If you’re saying you want me to undergo some sort of psychological transformation, I think that our listeners would know that is not going to happen. “What you can do, and what the government should do, and what I want to do, is to get on with changing and reforming and improving our systems and our economy.” He claimed that voters were “fed up with hearing conversation about me” and wanted to focus instead on the cost of living, the economy and “standing up to violence and aggression” in Ukraine. “Forget
about me, think about what this country, the UK could do and where it’s gone,” he told reporters. However, his reaction and comments in the wake of the by-election defeats have attracted strong criticism from Conservative Party quarters believed to be plotting yet again to try and oust him as leader and Prime Minister. One unnamed former supporter of Johnson and an ex-Cabinet minister branded his remarks as “completely delusional”. A senior member of Parliament from a “red wall” seat, traditionally Labour Party strongholds which had been won over by the Tories in the 2019 general election, said he was “showing increasing signs of a bunker mentality, and that never ends well”.
utes speech at the crowded stadium. Modi said that Indians are proud of their democracy. “Today, we can proudly say that India is the mother of democracy... The diversity of culture, food, clothes, music and traditions makes our democracy vibrant. India has shown that democracy can deliver and has delivered.” In his monthly ‘Mann Ki Baat’ radio broadcast earlier in the day, Modi had targeted the Congress for im-
posing the Emergency, and asserted that it is difficult to find another example in the world where people defeated a “dictatorial mindset” through democratic means. Addressing the Indian community members who had come to Munich after travelling long distances, Modi lauded the contribution of the diaspora in promoting India’s success story and acting as brand ambassadors of India’s success. The Prime Minister highlighted India’s growth story and mentioned various initiatives undertaken by the government to further achieve the country’s development agenda. “In last century, Germany and other countries benefited from the 3rd Industrial Revolution. India was a slave back then that’s why it couldn’t leverage benefits. But now India will not be left behind in the 4th Industrial Revolution, it’s now leading the world,” Modi said.
At least 20 dead in S African club; cause not yet known JOHANNESBURG, JUN 26 (AP): South African police are investigating the deaths of at least 20 people at a nightclub in the coastal town of East London early Sunday morning. It is unclear what led to the deaths of the young people, who were reportedly attending a party to celebrate the end of winter school exams. Local newspaper Daily Dispatch reported that bodies were strewn across tables and chairs without any visible signs of injuries. “At this point we cannot confirm the cause of death,” said health department spokesperson Siyanda Manana. “We are going to con-
duct autopsies as soon as possible to establish the probable cause of death. The deceased have been taken to state mortuaries,” Manana added. Police Minister Bheki Cele was on Sunday morning expected to visit the scene. The owner of the club, Siyakhangela Ndevu, told local broadcaster eNCA that he had been called to the scene early Sunday morning. “I am still uncertain about what really happened, but when I was called in the morning I was told the place was too full and that some people were trying to force their way into the tavern,” he said.
G-7 to ban Russian gold in response to Ukraine war: Biden ELMAU, JUN 26 (AP): President Joe Biden said Sunday that the United States and other Group of Seven leading economies will ban imports of gold from Russia, the latest in a series of sanctions that the club of democracies hopes will further isolate Russia economically over its invasion of Ukraine. A formal announcement was expected Tuesday as the leaders hold their annual summit. Biden and his counterparts will huddle on the summit’s opening day Sunday to discuss how to secure energy supplies and tackle inflation, aiming to keep the fallout from Russia’s invasion of Ukraine from splintering the global coalition working to punish Moscow. Hours before the summit was to formally open,

Russia launched missile strikes against the Ukrainian capital Sunday, striking at least two residential buildings, Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko said. They were the first such strikes by Russia in three weeks. Senior Biden administration officials said gold is Moscow’s second
largest export after energy, and that banning imports would make it more difficult for Russia to participate in global markets. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss details before the announcement. British Prime Minister Boris Johnson said the ban
on Russian gold will “directly hit Russian oligarchs and strike at the heart of Putin’s war machine,” a reference to Russian President Vladimir Putin. “Putin is squandering his dwindling resources on this pointless and barbaric war. He is bankrolling his ego at the expense of both the Ukrainian and Russian people,” Johnson said. “We need to starve the Putin regime of its funding.” In recent years, gold has been the top Russian export after energy — reaching almost $19 billion or about 5% of global gold exports, in 2020, according to the White House. Of Russian gold exports, 90% was consigned to G-7 countries. Of these Russian exports, over 90%, or nearly $17 billion, was exported to the UK.
panies suggested by the Russia’s Embassy in Colombo for the procurement of crude. Wijesekera said the exact date of the arrival of these fuel shipments that got delayed were not certain, even as he asserted that four groups from the ministry are currently working to secure fuel imports. Meanwhile, the government has also decided to implement a token system in filling stations to the supply of fuel for those waiting in queues, Wijesekera said. The programme will come into effect from Monday, for which the government has sought the assistance of personnel from the police and army. Sri Lanka is facing the worst economic crisis since independence in 1948 which has led to an acute shortage of essential items like food, medicine, cooking gas and fuel across the country.

KYIV/POKROVSK, JUN 26 (AGENCIES): Russian missiles hit an apartment block and kindergarten in the Ukrainian capital Kyiv on Sunday, in strikes U.S. President Joe Biden condemned as “barbarism” as world leaders gathered in Europe to discuss further sanctions against Moscow. Up to four explosions shook central Kyiv in the early hours, in the first such attack on the city in weeks. Two more blasts were heard on the southern outskirts of the city later in the day, a Reuters reporter said. “The Russians hit Kyiv again. Missiles damaged an apartment building and a kindergarten,” said Andriy Yermak, head of the president’s administration. A Reuters photographer saw a large blast crater by a playground in a kindergarten that had smashed windows. - Po p s u p e r b a n d BTS’ member JHope is all set to unveil his maiden solo album ‘Jack in the Box’ on July 15. The first single will drop on July 1, reports ‘Variety’. According to the official announcement, ‘Jack in the Box’ lends voice to JHope’s aspirations to break the mold and grow further. The album represents J-Hope’s own musical personality and vision as an artist. In making the announcement of solo projects earlier this month, J-Hope said he sees it as a healthy step. “I think we should spend some time apart to learn how to be one again,” he said. “I hope you don’t see this as a negative thing, and see it as a healthy plan. I think BTS will become stronger that way.” Earlier this week, the group’s new compilation album ‘Proof ’ became their sixth album to debut atop the Billboard 200 chart, despite the drama that accompanied its release. Four days before it dropped, the group announced they would be taking a break to focus on their solo careers. (IANS)

ilipina Fuschia Anne Ravena was crowned Miss International Queen 2022 on Saturday at a contest in Thailand billed as the world’s largest and most popular transgender pageant. The 27-year-old business owner beat 22 other contestants for the crown, with the second and third place going to contestants from Colombia and France, respectively. “My first message to everyone is to spread love and peace and unity because that is the most important thing that we do as of the moment and what’s happening in the world right now,”
said Ravena who wore a glittery-silver evening gown. The pageant, which was halted for almost two years because of the pandemic, resumed in the Thai seaside town of Pattaya during Pride Month to also celebrate gender equality, said Alisa Phanthusak, the CEO of Miss Tiffany Show, the organiser. The contest, which brings together transgender people from around the world, was launched over a decade ago to help
transgender women feel more accepted by society. Thailand has one of Asia’s most open and visible lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) communities, adding to its image of tolerance and attraction as a liberal holiday destination for foreign tourists. But activists say Thai laws and institutions have yet to reflect changing social attitudes and still discriminate against LGBT+ people and same-sex couples. (Reuters)

They were directed to place the front of the free foot on the back of the opposite lower leg, while keeping their arms by their sides and their gaze fixed straight ahead. They had up to three tries on either foot. About one in five couldn’t do it. Failure was more likely with age, roughly doubling at fiveyear intervals from age 51 onward. About 54% of 71- to 75-year-olds could not complete the test, according to the report published June 22 in the British Journal of Sports Medicine. That was also true for 37% of 66- to 70-year-olds; 18% of those aged 61 to 65; 8% of 56- to 60-yearolds; and 5% of the 51- to 55-year-old age group. That means those in the oldest group were 11 times more likely to fail than those who were 20 years younger, the study authors noted in a journal news release. There were no clear differences in causes of death between those who could and those who could not complete the test. But the proportion of deaths among those who failed was almost 13% higher. Those who failed were more likely to have poor health, including obesity, heart disease, high blood pressure, unhealthy blood fat profiles and type 2 dia-

t sounds easy, but standing on one leg for 10 seconds can be harder than you think. And your ability to do so — or not — may predict whether you are more likely to die within the next decade, a new study suggests. That’s why an international team of researchers says the 10-second test should be part of routine health checks for all middle-aged and older adults. “[It] provides rapid and objective feedback for the patient and health professionals regarding static balance,” the researchers said, adding that the test adds useful information regarding a patient’s risk of premature death. Dr. Claudio Araujo of the Exercise Medicine Clinic in Rio de Janeiro led the study. Araujo’s team noted that balance, unlike aerobic fitness, muscle strength and flexibility, tends to be reasonably well preserved until a person’s sixth decade of life. It then wanes rapidly. For the study, the researchers used data from the CLINIMEX Exercise study, which was set up in 1994 to assess links between ill health, death and various measures of physical fitness, exercise and conventional heart disease risks. The investigators collected data at check-ups from about 1,700 white Brazilians (aged 51 to 75) between February 2009 and December 2020. The check-ups included weight, several measures of skinfold thickness, waist size
betes, the study found. When the researchers took into account for age, sex and underlying conditions, they linked an inability to stand unsupported on one leg for 10 seconds with an 84% higher risk of death from any cause within the next decade. Over an average seven-year follow up, 7% of participants died — 32% from cancer; 30% from heart disease; 9% from respiratory disease; and 7% from complications of COVID-19. As an observational study, the research doesn’t prove cause and effect. But the researchers said this simple and safe balance test could be included in routine health checks for older adults. Amateur Muay Thai boxers MP beat Mumbai to clinch 1st Ranji Trophy title Nagaland win 13 medals at National C’ship
BENGALURU, JUN 26 (IANS): It was a historic Sunday at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium for Madhya Pradesh as they defeated Mumbai by six wickets in the final to clinch their maiden Ranji Trophy title. The historic win was fashioned by centuries from Yash Dubey, Shubham Sharma and Rajat Patidar in the first innings and after Mumbai were all out for 269 in their second innings on day five, Sharma and Patidar helped them chase down 108 in 29.5 overs to make Sunday an unforgettable day for Madhya Pradesh. The victory is also another feather in the cap of Chandrakant Pandit’s glittering coaching CV in domestic cricket, after previously guiding Mumbai and Vidarbha to Ranji Trophy titles. Co-incidentally, Pandit had missed winning the Ranji Trophy as the Madhya Pradesh captain in 1998/99 at this very venue and 23 years later, the stars aligned for him to win the trophy as its head coach.

The pursuit of 108 got off to a rocky start for Madhya Pradesh as Dhawal Kulkarni got one to sneak through Yash Dubey’s defence and downed the middle stump. Shubham Sharma and Himanshu Mantri ran some quick singles and kept the scoreboard ticking despite no boundaries coming. The introduction of off-spinner Tanush Kotian opened the floodgates
for Madhya Pradesh, with Mantri drilling him down the ground, followed by a fine paddle sweep for two boundaries. When Kotian returned for his third over, Mantri crunched a drive past non-striker for another boundary. Against Shams Mulani, Mantri had swept and survived as the top-edge landed wide of square leg. But in the left-arm spinner’s
next over, Mantri again tried to sweep, but the ball brushed past his foot to hit the stumps. Mulani returned to take out Parth Sahani cheaply. Sharma and Rajat Patidar, who was greeted with ‘RCB, RCB’ chants from the crowd, rotated the strike well against Mulani and Kotian apart from a near runout of the latter. It was the introduction of pacer Mohit
Awasthi brought boundaries for Madhya Pradesh, with Patidar driving on the up between extra cover and mid-off, followed by a cracking punch down the ground. Sharma took the third boundary of the over by bisecting mid-wicket and midon with perfection through his pull. In a bid to finish the chase quickly, Sharma reached out to slog-sweep, only for the ball to be caught by a forward diving point. Patidar dabbed Sarfaraz Khan through backward point before taking a single through the same region to give Madhya Pradesh their first Ranji Trophy title. Brief Scores: Mumbai 374 all out in 127.4 overs and 269 all out in 57.3 overs (Suved Parkar 51, Sarfaraz Khan 45; Kumar Kartikeya Singh 4/98, Parth Sahani 2/43) lost to Madhya Pradesh 536 all out in 177.2 overs and 108/4 in 29.5 overs (Himanshu Mantri 37, Rajat Patidar 30 not out; Shams Mulani 3/41, Dhawal Kulkarni 1/7) by six wickets

PM hails Mithali, calls her an inspiration Archery World Cup: India women settle for silver in recurve team NEW DELHI, JUN 26 (IANS): Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday called Mithali Raj an inspiration to many and conveyed his best wishes to the legendary former Indian skipper who announced her retirement earlier this month. Having made her debut as a 16-year-old in 1999, Mithali’s career spanned nearly 23 years across 4 different decades during which time she became the central cog in the growth of the women’s game in India and beyond. In Sunday’s episode of ‘Mann Ki Baat’, Modi described Mithali as
Narendra Modi
“one of the most talented cricketers in India”. “Her retirement from cricket has emotionally moved many sports lovers. Mithali has not only been an extraordinary player but has also been an inspiration to many players. I wish Mithali all the very best for her future,” PM said. The legendary
cricketer Mithali finished her international career with a staggering 10,868 runs -the most in women’s cricket. She scored 7;805 ODI runs in 232 matches, at an average of just over 50 while has 2;364 runs in 89 T20Is, as well as 699 runs in 12 Tests, including a century and four half-centuries. The 39-year-old Mithali, who captained India to the final of the ICC Women’s WC 2017, also holds the record for the most matches (28 matches) captained in Women’s WCs breaking Australian legend Belinda Clark’s record during the ICC Women’s WC 2022 in March.
NEW DELHI, JUN 26 (IANS): The Indian women’s recurve team of Deepika Kumari, Ankita Bhakat and Simranjeet Kaur settled for a silver medal at Stage 3 of the Archery World Cup 2022 in Paris, France, on Sunday. The Indian trio lost 1-5 in the final to Chinese Taipei, comprising Rio 2016 Olympics bronze medallist Lei Chien-Ying, Peng ChiaMao and Kuo Tzu Ying. India began the match against Chinese Taipei on even terms with scores tied at 27 each after the first three arrows. However, a 7 in the fourth shot saw India

concede the momentum and trail 0-2 after the first set. India made a comeback in the next set by hitting two 10s and four 9s. However, Chinese Taipei, despite an 8 in their second
attempt, shot three 10s, including an X, to keep the three-point advantage intact and lead 3-1 at the halfway stage. With their task cut out, the trio of Deepika, Ankita and Simranjeet could
not match the consistency of their rivals and gave away two set points in the third set and lost the match 1-5. Earlier in the semifinals, the 13th-seeded Indian trio defeated eighth seeds Turkey 5-3 after sweeping Great Britain 6-0 in the last eight. The Indian team beat Ukraine 5-1 in the earlier round. However, Indian recurve archers drew a blank in the individual events in Paris. This was Tokyo Olympian and former world No. 1 recurve archer Deepika Kumari’s first international outdoor tournament since finishing fourth at the World Cup Fi-
nal last September. Deepika, currently ranked third in the world, had lost the national trials after a disappointing campaign at Tokyo Olympics. Subsequently, she was sidelined for the previous World Cups this year. This was India’s third medal at the Stage 3 Archery World Cup in Paris. India are now placed second on the Archery World Cup 2022 medals table with four gold, three silver and three bronze medals. South Korea, with six gold medals, are on top while Great Britain are third with four gold medals, two silver and one bronze.
