Assam-Mizoram border clash: 5 Assam Policemen killed, 50 injured Assam, Mizoram CMs in heated Twitter exchange; Shah intervenes GUWAHATI/AIZAWL, JUL 26 (PTI): At least five Assam police personnel were killed and 50 others, including an SP, injured in clashes on Monday in a sudden escalation of the border dispute between Assam and Mizoram that also saw the two chief ministers engaging in a public spat, blaming each other’s police for the violence and seeking the Centre’s intervention. The Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced on Twitter that six personnel of the Assam Police were killed in firing along the inter-state border in the Cachar district. However, an Assam government statement later revised the figure just before midnight and said that five state police personnel died and more than 50 people of the force were injured. Union Home Minister Amit Shah spoke to the chief ministers of Assam and
Mizoram, Himanta Biswa Sarma and Zoramthanga respectively, and urged them to ensure peace along the disputed border and find an amicable settlement. “Clear evidences are now beginning to emerge that unfortunately show that Mizoram Police has used Light Machine Guns (LMG) against personnel of @assampolice...,” Sarma said in a tweet. However, Mizoram Home Minister Lalchamliana, in a statement, said Mizoram Police responded “spontaneously by firing back” at Assam Police after its 200 personnel forcibly crossed a duty post manned by the CRPF personnel and indulged in arson, assault on unarmed persons and firing. Mizoram DIG (Northern Range), Lalbiakthanga Khiangte, also alleged that Assam Police opened fire and hurled grenades at Mizoram forces and unarmed civilians

near Vairengte village in Kolasib district in the afternoon. “We had no other choice but to retaliate in self defence,” he said. A senior Assam Police officer, who was inside the forest amid continuous firing from across the state border, told PTI that at least 50 personnel, including Cachar SP Nimbalkar Vaibhav Chandrakant, were injured in firing and stone-pelting. Amit Shah during his separate telephonic conversations with Assam CM Sarma and his Mizoram counterpart Zoramthanga, asked them to maintain
peace along the inter-state border where tension prevails, the sources said. The home minister asked the chief ministers to resolve the border issue mutually. Both chief ministers have assured the home minister that the needful will be done to ensure peace and resolve the border issue amicably. Soon after, Mizoram Home Minister Lalchamliana said in his statement that following the intervention of Shah, the Assam Police have withdrawn from the place and the duty post have been handed back to CRPF personnel.
Earlier, Zoramthanga accused the Assam Police of resorting to lathi-charge and lobbing tear gas shells while Assam Police claimed that a large number of “miscreants” from Mizoram were indulging in stone pelting and had attacked the Assam government officials. Locals on the Assam side alleged that miscreants armed with sticks, rods and even rifles, attacked Assam Police at Lailapur and damaged several vehicles, including those belonging to the DC’s office. Zoramthanga posted a video in his Twitter handle
Delta variant infecting fully-vaccinated people BSY resigns as Karna CM NEW DELHI, JUL 26 (AGENCIES): The Delta variant is the fastest, fittest and most formidable version of the coronavirus that causes COVID-19 the world has encountered, and it is upending assumptions about the disease even as nations loosen restrictions and open their economies, according to virologists and epidemiologists. Vaccine protection remains very strong against severe infections and hospitalizations caused by any version of the coronavirus, and those most at risk are still the unvaccinated, according to interviews with 10 leading COVID-19 experts. The major worry about the Delta variant,
first identified in India, is not that it makes people sicker, but that it spreads far more easily from person to person, increasing infections and hospitalizations among the unvaccinated. Evidence is also mounting that it is capable of infecting fully vaccinated people at a greater rate than previous versions, and concerns have been raised that they may even spread the virus, these experts said. “The biggest risk to the world at the moment is simply Delta,” said microbiologist Sharon Peacock, who runs Britain’s efforts to sequence the genomes of coronavirus variants, calling it the “fittest and fastest variant yet.”
Vir uses constantly evolve through mutation, with new variants arising. Sometimes these are more dangerous than the original. Until there is more data on Delta variant transmission, disease experts say that masks, social distancing and other measures set aside in countries with broad vaccination campaigns may again be needed. Public Health England said on Friday that out of a total of 3,692 people hospitalized in Britain with the Delta variant, 58.3% were unvaccinated and 22.8% were fully vaccinated. In Singapore, where Delta is the most common variant, government officials

Centre justifies higher taxes on petrol and diesel NEW DELHI, JUL 26 (IANS): Centre has justified high level of taxation on auto fuels suggesting that revenue from petroleum sector is important for running various developmental schemes but has refused to acknowledge the role played by higher prices of petrol and diesel in fuelling inflationary pressure on the economy. Replying to a question on impact of rising fuel prices on country’s economic recovery from the Covid-19 pandemic in the Lok Sabha, minister of petroleum and

DIMAPUR, JUL 26 (NPN): Even before the emergence of Covid-19 pandemic, World Health Organisation (WHO) had recognised vaccine hesitancy as one of the 10 leading threats to global health. In recent weeks, the s t a t e g ove r n m e n t h a d ramped up efforts to sensitise public on efficacy and safety of Covid vaccine. However, denial and hesitancy still remain, which threaten public health and
also any chance of ending the pandemic soon. Speaking to Nagaland Post, pulmonologist Dr Mecietuonuo Rutsa of Eden Medical Centre here said the severity of Covid-19 was more among the unvaccinated patients at the hospital, compared with those who had taken the vaccine. While attending to her patients, she said she had noticed that most of those who were vaccinated did not develop post-Covid complications. She also claimed that a patient had
died recently even after being vaccinated with the first dose because the person had underlying health complications. She observed that most people infected with the virus stayed at home and treated themselves for fear of stigmatisation. She said people thought it was just flu and got vaccinated. Mecietuonuo explained that what they did not know was that the sickness after getting vaccinated got “exaggerated” and was “precipitated” by the vaccine. “Many think that if
they get vaccinated, they would get better, but this is wrong,” she stressed. She disclosed that there was one such death at the hospital where a patient reportedly took the vaccine after being sick and died after a few days. In such cases, the doctor said people might think that the patient was fine and had died after taking the vaccine. “What I want people to know is that we should be 100% sure we do not have Covid before taking the vaccine,” she stressed. of a stand-off between Assam police personnel and a group of stick-wielding youths. “Shri @AmitShah ji kindly look into the matter. This needs to be stopped right now. #MizoramAssamBorderTension,” he said, tagging the Prime Minister’s office and Union Home Minister’s office, Sarma and officials of Assam’s Cachar district. Zoramthanga also alleged in another tweet that “an innocent couple” on their way back to Mizoram via Cachar was “manhandled” by “thugs and goons”. “How are you going to justify these violent acts?” he asked. The Assam Police countered the Mizoram chief minister’s allegations by saying that people from Mizoram attacked its personnel and indulged in stone-pelting on them. “It’s unfortunate that a large number of miscreants from Mizoram are indulging in stone pelting and such forms of attack at Assam Government Officials, stationed at Lailapur to protect Assam’s land from
encroachment,” it tweeted. The Assam Police also said, “We strongly condemn these acts of vandalism and reiterate our resolve to protect Assam’s boundary.” The Assam chief minister tweeted: “Honble @ ZoramthangaCM ji , Kolasib ( Mizoram) SP is asking us to withdraw from our post until then their civilians won’t listen nor stop violence. “How can we run government in such circumstances? Hope you will intervene at earliest @ AmitShah @PMOIndia,” he tweeted along with a video of the situation. Later, Sarma said he spoke to his Mizoram counterpart and reiterated that Assam Police will maintain the status quo and peace along the border. “I have just spoken to chief minister Zoramthanga. I have reiterated that Assam will maintain status quo and peace between the borders of our state. I have expressed my willingness to visit Aizawl and discuss these issues if need be @AmitShah @ PMOIndia,” he said.
However, Zoramthanga again tweeted: “Dear Himantaji, after cordial meeting of CMs by Hon’ble Shri @amitshah ji, surprisingly 2 companies of Assam Police with civilians lathi-charged & tear-gassed civilians at Vairengte Auto Rickshaw stand inside Mizoram today. They even overrun CRPF personnel /Mizoram Police,” he claimed. The Mizoram chief minister also urged Sarma to instruct the Assam Police to withdraw from Vairengte for the safety of civilians. Both the chief ministers had attended a meeting of all chief ministers of North Eastern states, chaired by the union home minister, in Shillong on Saturday. In his statement, the Mizoram home minister said around 200 personnel of the Assam Police led by an IGP and accompanied by the DC, SP and DFO Cachar came to Vairengte autorickshaw stand at around 11.30 a.m. on Monday and allegedly forcibly crossed the duty (Cont’d on p-8)
Supporting opposition-less govt without any pre-condition: NPFLP DIMAPUR, JUL 26 (NPN): Naga People’s Front Legislative Party (NPFLP) has clarified that it had decided to support the concept of an opposition-less government in the State without any pre-condition and did not place any demand whatsoever before the incumbent PDA government. Noting that Naga people have been praying for unity among 60 MLAs in order to facilitate the IndoNaga peace process so that all Naga negotiating groups could come together and create a common ground in order to remove all kinds of confusion among the Nagas and Government of India
(GoI), NPFLP secretary Dr Chumben Murry in a press communiqué stressed that their good intention should not be misconstrued. He said the sole reason and purpose in supporting the formation of an opposition-less government was to pursue an early resolution and settlement of the protracted Naga issue. He therefore urged Naga negotiating groups and the Centre, besides all political parties, to be sincere in their approach while handling the ongoing situation in order to conclude the ongoing peace process at the earliest. In another statement, NPF through its press bu-
reau, said it was amused by the reactions of National People’s Party (NPP) and Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee (NPCC) to its recent decision to support the ruling coalition in the State. The party in a separate press communiqué explained that extending support to the ruling coalition to expedite the unresolved political conflict with GoI was an effort to demonstrate cohesiveness and present a united voice as elected representatives of the Nagas. The party clarified that it was not grouping as one political entity and claim to be unifying for the Naga cause as (Cont’d on p-8)
Delhi church demolition: NPCC questions silence DIMAPUR, JUL 26 (NPN): Reacting to the demolition of Little Flower Church in South Delhi on July 12, Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee (NPCC) Monday said the party expected Christian states particularly Nagaland would react sharp-
ly, condemn and protest the action, but has remained silent so far. NPCC president K Therie said that “Nagaland for Christ” was the commitment of NBCC, which impplied the readiness to rise and sacrifice for Christ.
TDDC reiterates demand for separate Tobu district DIMAPUR, JUL 26 (NPN): Just a day after the Aboi District Demand Committee (ADDC) urged the state government to declare Aboi as a district on August 15, the Tobu District Demand Committee (TDDC) has reaffirmed its demand for a separate Tobu district and requested the ADDC not to include Tobu and Moka under Aboi district demand. In a press release, TDDC secretary Sangti Konyak stated that the committee’s demand for separate Tobu district was for “just and effective governance”. TDDC claimed that the state government posted I Alienba Ao as the deputy commissioner Tobu as early as in 1987. The committee also said that in the year 2006 Tobu sub-division civil
society organisation made proposal to the state government for upgradation of Tobu ADC headquarters to full-fledged district headquarters. Subsequently in the year 2007, it said the proposal of the TDDC for up-gradation to district headquarters under Mon district was the only demand included in the notification issued under home department, GAB-1 in the “list of Demands for creation/up gradation and changes in Administrative Head Quarters”. TDDC said that the demand for Tobu district was “a public cry for justice to fill the infrastructural and staffing gaps, to improve the service delivery system, economic upliftment and lasting peace”. (Cont’d on p-7)
He said that remaining silent was, however, a betrayal of the commitment and denial of Christ. “Christians claiming to have faith in Jesus but support a government that persecutes Christians are Pharisees,” NPCC president said. (Cont’d on p-7)

The disease attacks the leaves, nodes collars and panicles of a rice plant. It is primarily spread through infected seeds, rice stubbles, wind and water and also in paddy grown in upland and higher elevation having water scarcity. The drought like situation from January to May have resulted in poor germination, low tillering and unhealthy growth making the paddy very prone to diseases attack, the department informed. It also advised the use of healthy and disease free seeds, proper disposal of rice stubbles after harvest, seeds treatment, spraying of fungicides etc., for management practices of blast disease of rice.

We remember their valour. “Today, on Kargil Vijay Diwas we pay homage to all those who lost their lives in Kargil protecting our nation. Their bravery motivates us every single day,” the prime minister tweeted from his handle. As many as 527 soldiers laid down their lives while over 1300 sustained injuries during Operation VIJAY as the Indian Army repulsed an attack by Pakistani intruders in Kargil sector in 1999. Leaders from various parties, union ministers, chief ministers, governors were among the prominent people who paid homage to the martyrs. Ceremonies were held in several parts of the country to mark the occasion. Union Home Minister Amit Shah, remembering all the brave soldiers of Kargil war, said,” Your indomitable c o u r a g e, v a l o u r a n d sacrifice made it possible to gloriously unfurl the tricolor again on the inaccessible and challenging heights of Kargil”. “A grateful nation bows to your dedication for keeping the integrity of the Nation intact,” he

Heavy rainfall likely over north, east over next 3-4 days NEW DELHI, JUL 26 ( P T I ) : H e av y r a i n f a l l activity is expected over north and east India during the next three-four days, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said on Monday. Due to the influence of these two systems, widespread rainfall activity with isolated heavy to very heavy falls is very likely over Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, U t t a r a k h a n d , P u n j a b, Haryana, Chandigarh and Uttar Pradesh till July 29 and its intensity will reduce thereafter. Isolated extremely heavy rainfall is also likely over Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand on July 27 and 28 and over northwest Uttar Pradesh on July 27.
Only govt ‘unconcerned’ about snooping allegations is that of India: PC “conclusions” of their own investigations, the former home minister said. “The only government that is unconcerned is the Government of India!” Chidambaram said. Is it because the government was fully aware of the snooping and does not need any more information from Israel or the NSO Group, he asked. Chidambaram on Sunday had said the government should either
call for a joint parliamentary committee probe into t h e Pe g a s u s s n o o p i n g allegations or request the Supreme Court to appoint a sitting judge to investigate the matter.
In an interview with PTI, he had also demanded that Prime Minister Narendra Modi make a statement in Parliament clarifying whether there had been surveillance or not.
NEW DELHI, JUL 26 (PTI): Extending support to farmers protesting against the Centre’s three farm laws, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Monday drove a tractor to Parliament along with other party MPs and demanded that the agricultural laws be repealed. Gandhi, along with party MPs Pratap Singh Bajwa, Ravneet Singh Bittu, Deepinder Singh Hooda, Gurjit Singh Aujla, Jasbir Singh Gill and other leaders like Randeep Surjewala, also carried banners and raised slogans. Gandhi said he has brought the message of farmers to Parliament. “We have brought the message of farmers to Parliament. Their issue is not being allowed to be discussed in Parliament and farmers all over the country are being suppressed and that is why we are here.
These black laws should be withdrawn,” he told reporters. He claimed that these farm laws are aimed to help only two-three industrialists. “The entire country knows for whom these laws have been brought. These laws are not for the benefit of farmers and that is why they have to be withdrawn,” he added. Later, in a tweet in Hindi, Gandhi said, “If you force them to sell their land, then the tractor will run in Parliament - we will grow the crop of truth. Withdraw the anti-agriculture laws.” Surjewala and Youth Congress chief BV Srinivas, along with a number of party leaders, were detained by the Delhi Police outside Parliament and taken to Mandir marg police station. The police said 10 people have been detained. The tractor driven by Rahul Gandhi has also been
impounded by the Delhi Police. The detained Congress leaders raised slogans demanding the withdrawal of farm laws. “We will not be cowed down by such actions. This struggle will continue under the leadership of Rahul Gandhi and we will not allow the Modi government to hand over the rights of 62 crore farmers to three-four industrialists,” Surjewala told reporters after he was detained. He said farmers of the country have been protesting on the roads for the last eight months. The tractor ride to Parliament was aimed at highlighting the cause of farmers and extending support to them, the party leaders said. The BJP has, however, called the move “theatrics”, saying the Congress is using farmers as a political tool.

India’s Olympic record
T
here is a saying - ‘morning shows the day’, which means if it is sunny in the morning, the whole day will be sunny too. The saying may not have much to do with implications of human nature than nature’s weather itself. The implication appears that the early signs and symptoms are the pointers to future growth. Manipur’s Mirabai Chanu won a Silver medal for India, in women’s weightlifting on Day One of the ongoing XXXII Tokyo Olympics 2020. The saying raises hope since the first day of the Olympics is likened to morning and therefore, many sports enthusiasts in India are hoping that Chanu’s medal win will be a foretaste of more medals in the days to come. However, it will take more than a belief in the saying for India to win more medals this time. India’s Olympic record since 2008 hasn’t been much to talk about when compared with physically smaller and economically very poor nations like Jamaica, Ethiopia and Kenya etc). In the 2008 Olympics India won its first ever gold medal besides two bronze medals and was ranked 51 out of 87 nations that won medals. In the 2012 London Olympics India won two silver and four bronze medals and placed in 57th position out of 79 medal winning nations. In the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics(Brazil), India won one silver and one bronze medal and was placed at 67th position among 78 nations that won medals. The record of India’s performances at Olympics has been dismal and nothing to show of a country that boasts of being the world’s second most populous nation after China and with a burgeoning economy that places it among the top 10 nations of the world. Games where India had done well at the international fora such as hockey, badminton, wrestling and rowing etc offer hopes of some medal but these fade away each day after India bows out of each competition. With most of the men either being eliminated in preliminary rounds or facing very tough competitions, India’s hopes for more medal could possibly come from ace shuttler P.V.Sindhu and Mary Kom, Manipur’s ace boxing champion. India has consistently failed to make it to the top-20 in Olympics and has barely managed to hold its space by being ranked in the 50s out of 70s. Competitive games and sports demands not only top physical strength and stamina but also trained with latest methodology and technology for sharpening mental preparedness. India has a total population of around 130 crore people while Jamaica has only 28 lakh people. In terms of economy India’s GDP is $ 2622.98 billion which is way above Jamaica’s GDP at $ 13.81 billion. Despite being the world’s second-most populous country with more than 1.3 billion people, India gets the smallest number of Olympic medals in proportion to population size. At the Rio Olympics in 2016, India won one silver and one bronze medal. Other countries with low levels of per-capita income have fared better at the Olympics. India’s performance in relation to its human potential consistently places it in the bottom third of world rankings, just above countries like Haiti, Congo and Malawi. There are, of course, other parts to the explanation, including poor facilities and incompetent officials. But the inability of India to dig beneath the surface of its vast talent pool is an essential part of the story of poor performance.
DailyDevotion The Way to Purity
Those things which proceed out of the mouth come from the heart….For out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, blasphemies. These are the things which defile a man… —Matthew 15:18-20 Initially we trust in our ignorance, calling it innocence, and next we trust our innocence, calling it purity. Then when we hear these strong statements from our Lord, we shrink back, saying, “But I never felt any of those awful things in my heart.” We resent what He reveals. Either Jesus Christ is the supreme authority on the human heart, or He is not worth paying any attention to. Am I prepared to trust the penetration of His Word into my heart, or would I prefer to trust my own “innocent ignorance”? If I will take an honest look at myself, becoming fully aware of my so-called innocence and putting it to the test, I am very likely to have a rude awakening that what Jesus Christ said is true, and I will be appalled at the possibilities of the evil and the wrong within me. But as long as I remain under the false security of my own “innocence,” I am living in a fool’s paradise. If I have never been an openly rude and abusive person, the only reason is my own cowardice coupled with the sense of protection I receive from living a civilized life. But when I am open and completely exposed before God, I find that Jesus Christ is right in His diagnosis of me. The only thing that truly provides protection is the redemption of Jesus Christ. If I will simply hand myself over to Him, I will never have to experience the terrible possibilities that lie within my heart. Purity is something far too deep for me to arrive at naturally. But when the Holy Spirit comes into me, He brings into the center of my personal life the very Spirit that was exhibited in the life of Jesus Christ, namely, the HolySpirit, which is absolute unblemished purity.

NAGALAND POST, DIMAPUR TUESDAY, JULY 27, 2021
King Abdullah’s US visit marks an end to four years of being snubbed by the Trump administration, and may herald a new chapter in the US-Jordanian ties.
J
ordanian King Abdullah became the first Arab leader to meet the US President Joe Biden at the White House on July 19. By granting him this honour the new US administration is putting its weight behind Jordan to become the voice of the region and non-gulf Arab nations, once again. A s t h e Jo r d a n i a n monarch for the last 22 years King Abdullah has been seen by American presidents as a moderate, reliable ally in the Middle East, besides being the eyes and ears from the Arab world in Washington. However, during the last four years that special relationship was put into cold storage, as Donald Trump, favoured working with Saudi Arabia and the Gulf states instead. Fo r i n s t a n c e t h e Tr ump administration didn’t consulted King Abdullah, on the Mideast peace plan, which originally provided for annexation of the Jordan Valley. Reports say that in his renewed role as a representative of moderate, proWestern Arabs, Abdullah brought several messages to Biden. Impact on JordanSaudi relations President Joe Biden may have little appetite for Israeli-Palestinian
W
peace-making efforts, but he seems determined to prevent certain third parties from exploiting the regional stalemate to their advantage. Although the US’s and Biden’s foreign policy priorities are heavily focused on China and Russia, the Middle East is a region that the new administration understands very well it cannot afford to ignore. Relations between Jordan and Saudi Arabia had their own ups and downs during the last four years. The Saudis were irked by King Abdullah’s fierce rejection of Trump’s recognition of all of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital. Jordan also refused to consider the president’s Israeli-Palestinian peace plan. King Abdullah suspected that the US and Israel were favouring a Saudi role in the administration of the Muslim sites on the Temple Mount in Jerusalem. Jordanian officials denied reports last year in Israeli newspapers quoting Saudi diplomats as saying that Jordan was willing to grant Saudi Arabia observer status in the endowment administering the Muslim holy sites on the Temple Mount. The Saudi interest is marked by various moves initiated by the country in recent years, though it has
not officially declared its desire to wrest control of the Temple Mount from Jordan, yet. Saudi King Salman announced at the Arab Summit in Dhahran in April 2018 that he was donating $150 million to support Islam’s holy places in Jerusalem. The donation was aimed to counter Turkish bequests. Saudi Arabia has since clashed with Jordan at various Arab forums over Jordan’s exclusive control of the administration of the Jerusalem sites and is believed to have been wooing Palestinian religious dignitaries to achieve its objective. Here the risk for Saudi Arabia is that broadening the administration of the Jerusalem sites could lead to demands that the custodianship of Mecca and Medina should also be internationalised. This proposition, often put forward by Iran, sounds horrific to the Saudis. For much of the past century, the administration of Jerusalem’s Muslim holy sites has vested in a Jordanian governmentcontrolled endowment. And Jordan views the Saudi and other interested Islamic nation’s efforts as an affront, which certain observers also describe as the battle to emerge as the supreme leader of the Islamic world. The stakes in the
struggle for control of Muslim holy sites in Jerusalem sites are high. For Riyadh’s ruling Saud family, this is about bolstering its religious claim to leadership of the Muslim world. For Jordan and its Hashemite monarchs, who trace their ancestry back to the Prophet Muhammad, this is more about politics than religion. Palestinians account for more than 40% of Jordan’s population, thus maintaining the status quo in Jerusalem—which most Palestinians hope to be the capital of a future Palestinian state—is key to ensuring the regime’s survival. Despite Abdullah’s fraught relationship with the Saudi crown prince, the Jordanian monarch told Biden, “we have to work with MBS,” the sources said. This magnanimity stems from the confidence, which Abdullah has in revival of his ties with the new US administration. Jordan as the regional peacemaker King Abdullah also discussed Iraq and Syrian affairs with Joe Biden. It is reported that he urged Biden to back Iraqi Prime Minister Mustafa Al Kadhimi, who will be visiting the White House this week. King Abdullah’s proKadhimi argument were based on the fact that he

e will make it simple, and twisted at the same time, just like how your lives would be from now on. I believe many of you already have a clear insight on what the next giant leap of your life would be like. For those of you who don’t, I hope and pray that you soon will. The future you’re about to live in are chapters to be written in your history book. I remember when I was about to be Baptised (For Christians, Baptism signifies a confession of faith), my mother told me that it was to be the start of my Christian life, that everything I do from then will be counted on the judgement day. I believed my mama then, and I also believe the same applies to our career. Every course you take now will decide your fate. So, it is Ideal that you take time to reflect on yourselves and what you really are inside and out. This will help you choose the best for yourself in what you want to pursue, that depends on what you want your profession to be in life. It is rather simple to say as most of us might have had it well figured-out already. But if you happen to be one like me, just jumping round a list of courses only to have to opt for what your friends are about to, you really need to go home and really think of what you want to be in life. I’m really excited about politics and social issues but I’m a Science graduate in my Higher Secondary. All through my classes, it was all about mental pressures and dull study hours. Science might be exciting, but it wasn’t for me and I had to suffer all through it while I could’ve enjoyed learning politics and social issues. Your choice of stream of learning is arguably one of the most important steps to success. It must be a subject that interests you, that gives you an inner zeal to go for more until you’re physically exhausted. This way, your learning will be more fun and productive in your career prospects. Some of my classmates had another crunch. Most of them were brilliant students and were quite okay with the subjects. However, most of them seemed to have suggested to me that their learning was still a dull experience. Those were victims of the ardors of their parents. enjoys support of Egypt, the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia, as well as Jordan, and was described as the best bet to offset Iranian militias and influence in Iraq. King Abdullah also urged Biden to join a task force to help stabilise Syria. The approach Abdullah advocates would bring together the United States, Russia, Israel, Jordan and other nations to agree on a road map for restoring Syrian sovereignty and unity. Re p o r t s s ay t h a t Biden hasn’t yet committed to the proposal, as it would mean realigning the US interest with both Russia and the Bashar Al Assad regime, both of which are controversial decisions to be made. US academic Curtis Ryan, a widely acclaimed Jordanian expert opines that Jordan and its partners see the new three-way alignment or axis with Iraq and Egypt as an alternative power centre in Arab politics that will help to bring non-Gulf voices back to the forefront of Arab politics. In this regard Egyptian President Abdel Fattah Al Sissi’s visit to Baghdad can be described as a “positive step” to limit Iranian influence there. Bruce Riedel, a senior fellow at the Brookings Institution says that Abdullah has been the
most energetic Arab leader by far in trying to support a stable Iraqi government. This summit in Baghdad of Iraq, Jordan and Egypt is the first time that the Sunni Arabs have ever done anything in 18 years since the fall of Saddam— that they have actually done something to not only stabilise Iraq, but to offset Iranian influence. A final major area of discussion was Jordan’s relationship with the new Israeli government. Abdullah labelled a recent meeting he had with PM Bennett as reassuring, and said he trusts the two governments could cooperate on security and other issues. Although Jordan and Israel have a peace treaty, relations remained tense during Netanyahu’s long tenure as prime minister. However, this time though King Abdullah has apparent support of POTUS, but he also will have to outmanoeuvre his younger rivals like Sheikh Mohammed of the UAE and Prince MBS of Saudi Arabia to regain the regional Islamic leadership. How has the pandemic impacted students and their social life
G
lobal studies have shown that youngsters are struggling to cope with the varied challenges thrown up as a result of the pandemic. Anxiety, elevated stress levels and depression have been cited as some of the problems. When it comes to education, interrupted study programmes has been the main issue, despite the adoption of online learning methods. Academic insufficiency with online learning being the mode since March 2020, both teachers and students have been experiencing difficulties due to connectivity issues. For economically-challenged students, the lack of access to devices is another problem. This means that, despite a teacher’s best efforts, the question of how many students they reached remains. Also innovative and exploratory models of assessment and evaluation would not have been possible during this time. Dealing with this requires a great deal of self-learning by students. Emotional instability over the past year and a half, many students have had to deal with the loss of loved ones. While philanthropists and the governments have come forward to help them continue their education, the trauma of the loss has also to be dealt with. In the case of those
whose parents have lost their jobs, there is a lot of For economically challenged students, the lack of access to devices means that despite a teacher’s best efforts, the question of how many students they reached remains stressed due to having to find funds to pay the fees. A third aspect is that having to complete their education virtually has led to an emotional strain and worry about placements. This year has also seen many students worry about falling victim to the virus. No public gathering Youth often like to ‘chill’ at beaches, malls, theatres, parks and common places but this is now prohibited for their safety. Neither can they gather in other public places like places of worship, which may have offered some measure of solace. This has led to a lack of fellowship and social structure. Unfortunately, students are now glued to laptops or mobile phones for hours and their social life is also virtual. While this situation was unexpected and no one is sure when a degree of normalcy will be restored, it is important for us to address these issues so that the youth can come through to the other side without too much ado. (From p-1) Mecietuonuo said doctors would have got infected since they attended to Covid patients regularly. But, they did not because they took all precautions, including wearing proper protective gears. She also stressed following SOPs and wearing proper face masks. “People should realise that the second wave is more severe because during the first wave, the healthiest one in the family would not get infected, but the scene is terrifying now as even the healthy ones are getting infected,” she pointed out. It may be mentioned that the more the virus circulates, the more it can mutate into dangerous new variants that could undermine the efficacy of vaccines. When majority of the population are vaccinated against the disease, there will be few left to whom the infection can spread, thereby protecting the few who have not been vaccinated. Although the State has seen steady decline in Covid cases since the past three weeks, the relief could be fleeting as a significant amount of the population is still reluctant to get the shots.

(From p-1) reported on Friday that three quarters of its coronavirus cases occurred among vaccinated individuals, though none were severely ill. Israeli health officials have said 60% of current hospitalized COVID cases are in vaccinated people. Most of them are age 60 or older and often have underlying health problems. In the United States, which has experienced more COVID-19 cases and deaths than any other country, the Delta variant represents about 83% of new infections. So far, unvaccinated people represent nearly 97% of severe cases. A study in China found that people infected with the Delta variant carry 1,000 times more virus in their noses compared with the ancestral Wuhan strain first identified in that Chinese city in 2019. “You may actually excrete more virus and that’s why it’s more transmissible. That’s still being investigated,” Peacock said. Genomics expert Eric Topol, director of the Scripps Research Translational Institute in La Jolla, California, noted that Delta infections have a shorter incubation period and a far higher amount of viral particles. “That’s why the vaccines are going to be challenged. The people who are vaccinated have got to be especially careful. This is a tough one,” Topol said.
7 Pegasus row: Tharoor seeks SC judge-monitored probe NEW DELHI, JUL 26 (PTI): Congress leader Shashi Tharoor on Monday demanded a Supreme Court judge-monitored probe into the Pegasus snooping allegations and indicated that opposition parties would continue to disrupt Parliament’s proceedings until the government agrees to a debate on it. He alleged that it appears that the government used public money for snooping for its “selfish political interests”. Last week, an international media consortium reported that over 300 verified mobile phone numbers, including those of two ministers, over 40 journalists, three opposition leaders besides scores of businesspersons and activists in India, could have been targeted for snooping through the Pegasus spyware of the Israeli firm NSO Group, which only sells the hacking software to “vetted” governments and government agencies. The government has been denying all opposition allegations in the matter. Speaking to reporters in the Parliament complex after the Lok Sabha was adjourned, Tharoor said, “We want the government to agree to a debate on the issue, but it is not ready. What we are saying is that if you (government) do not agree
Shashi Tharoor
to this and answer our questions, then why we should allow you to transact your business.” He said other issues like price rise and contentious farm laws are also important for the opposition but the Pegasus row is a priority. Both Houses of Parliament have transacted little business since the Monsoon session began on July 19 as opposition parties have forced adjournments with their protests over a number of issues with the Pegasus row being the main one. Tharoor also made light of IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw’s statement on the issue in both Houses, saying he just shared his “Mann Ki Baat” without listening to the opposition. The parliamentar y panel on information technology led by Tharoor is likely to question top government officials, including from the home ministry, later this week on Pegasus snooping allegations, according to sources.

NEW DELHI, JUL 26 (PTI): Proceedings in Rajya Sabha were repeatedly disrupted on Monday as opposition members protested on the phone-tapping, farm laws and other issues and demanded a discussion after the suspension of regular business. The agitated members pressed the Chair to allow the Leader of Opposition to speak and created an uproar, forcing five adjournments. Soon after the House paid glowing tributes to the martyrs of the Kargil war and congratulated Mirabai Chanu for winning a silver medal in Tokyo Olympics, MPs belonging to the Congress, Trinamool Congress (TMC) and other opposition parties rushed into the Well raising slogans against the

He said important public interest issues have been allowed to be raised through zero hour and special mention but “the house is not able to perform its duty... members they are denied an opportunity.” “We are becoming helpless day by day,” he said. Since the start of the monsoon session of Parliament last week, zero-hour mentions which members could not raise because of disruption pertained to wide-ranging issues including Covid vaccine, unemployment due to the pandemic, problems of students availing higher education, hike in petroleum product prices, freedom of the press, killings of Indians in South Africa and sharing of Cauvery waters between states. “All these important issues could not be discussed because of this situation,” he said, referring to the disruption being caused by the opposition MPs. “We are becoming helpless. People should know what are the important issues admitted, members were present, they want to speak but they were not permitted by few,” he said.

issue,” he alleged. Lalchamliana said the confrontation continued and a volley of tear gas canisters and grenades were launched at Mizoram Police followed by firing from the Assam side at around 4.50 PM. The border dispute between the two neighbouring states is a long-standing issue. Several dialogues involving the Centre held since 1995 to resolve the dispute yielded little result. While the Mizoram government claimed that a 509-square-mile stretch of the inner-line reserve forest notified in 1875 under the Bengal Eastern Frontier Regulation of 1873 belongs to it, the Assam side agreed with the constitutional map and boundary drawn by the Survey of India in 1993. After a massive tussle in 2018, the border row resurfaced in August last year and then in February this year.

Upon learning of “the arson committed” by the Assam Police, residents of Vairengte town proceeded to the site to inquire and these unarmed civilians were assaulted by the Assam Police by lathi charging them and firing tear gas, thereby causing injuries to several civilians, the Mizoram home minister said. He said the Superintendent of Kolasib and an Executive Magistrate went to meet them and try to resolve the issue. However, “the Assam side was adamant and unwilling to discuss the
the Legislative Assembly, the party added. Ridiculing Congress, NPF said the party never came out with such a bold decision to resign when in power at the Centre and in the State. But now, when left without a single MLA in the Assembly, NPCC president K Therie was boldly asking all MLAs to resign in order to pave the way for solution, it added. The regional party reminded that resolutions or manifestoes of every political party spelled out loud and clear that legislators would pave the way for new arrangement, as and when conditions demanded it. Regardless of the scorn and insult heaped on it by people with vested interests, NPF asserted that it would continue to champion the rights of the Nagas and strive to protect and promote them in every possible way within the parameter of a democratic government because this objective was the fundamental principle on which it was found.

as gradual scaling back of lockdowns, along with the astute support of Atmanirbhar Bharat Mission has placed the economy firmly on the path of recovery from the second half of FY 2020-21,” she said. The government had announced a special economic and comprehensive package of Rs 29.87 lakh crore under AtmaNirbhar Bharat (ANB) to combat the impact of the pandemic, to revive economic growth and to bolster employment during 2020-21, she said. The Union Budget 2021-22 announced a number of measures to support broad-based and inclusive economic development including a 34.5 per cent increase in capital expenditure and 137 per cent increase in health expenditure, she said, adding, the government announced a relief package of Rs 6.29 lakh crore in June 2021, to strengthen public health and provide the impetus for growth and employment measures.
To this end, NPF was prepared to explore every possibility, including supporting the ruling dispensation in its effort to strengthen and expedite the political negotiation, the communiqué added. Claiming that it had strived to play the role of a constructive opposition since the formation of PDA government, the party clarified that it was also conscious not to undermine or hinder the efforts of the State government, NGOs, churches and other organizations in fighting and containing Covid-19 pandemic. The party reiterated that its elected representatives, along with all legislators, were ready to resign to pave way for the smooth transition of power, should political developments necessitate such an act. However, as democratically-elected representatives responsible to the people, entire MLAs cannot relinquish their position just to appease a political party that did not have a single elected representative in

NEW DELHI, JUL 26 (PTI): The government has no plan to print currency notes to tide over the current economic crisis triggered by the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman informed Parliament on Monday. To a question on whether there is any plan to print currency to tide over the crisis, the Finance Minister said, “No Sir”. Many economists and experts have suggested the government resort to printing more currency notes to support the economy ravaged by the spread of COVID-19, and protect jobs. India’s real Gross Domestic Product (GDP) is estimated to have contracted by 7.3 per cent during 2020-21, Sitharaman said in a written reply to Lok Sabha. This contraction reflects the unparalleled effect of the pandemic and the containment measures that were taken to control the pandemic, she said. “The fundamentals of the economy remain strong
(From p-1) alleged by NPP because it was neither a merger nor political defection to another political party. The release claimed that identity and Nagacentric ideology of NPF remained intact, unlike elected representatives of “certain political party” that had no qualms whatsoever about completely shedding its pre-election colours and defecting to another party to secure a position in the government. Admitting that the State had experienced opposition-less government before, NPF pointed out that NPP had, however, conveniently ignored the hard political reality that the State government was neither a party to the political negotiations between GoI and various Naga political groups nor a signatory to pre-settlement agreements on which the political negotiations were being based. Rather, it claimed that the State government had been playing a facilitating role between the various negotiating entities.

Pak Army says 46 Afghan soldiers cross China goes offensive against US at bilateral talks over to seek refuge after losing border post
Hands over list of demands to revive ties
BEIJING/TIANJIN, JUL 26 (PTI): Striking an aggressive stance at the face-to-face talks with the US, China on Monday for the first time handed down to Washington a list of demands and remedial actions to be taken by the Biden administration to end the “stalemate” in bilateral ties. Talks between Chinese Vice Foreign Minister Xie Feng and US Deputy Secretary of State Wendy Sherman to improve the relations got off on a rough note at the northeastern Chinese port city of Tianjin, with Xie launching a blistering attack on Washington, accusing it of being the “owner of

coercive diplomacy”. Sherman, the No. 2 diplomat of the US, is the highest-ranking American official to visit China since President Joe Biden took office six months ago. She started her meetings with Xie, who is incharge of the US-China relations, and is due to hold talks with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi at a resort
hotel in Tianjin. Besides launching a well-publicised scathing attack on the US, accusing it of “bullying” other countries with “might is right” coercive diplomacy by imposing sanctions, Xie also handed down a “List of US Wrongdoings that Must Stop” and a “List of Key Individual Cases that China Has Concerns”. The list included re-
moval of US sanctions imposed on the Chinese officials and their families and revocation of the Washington’s judicial request to Canada to extradite Meng Wanzhou, CFO of Huawei and daughter of its founder Ren Zhengfei, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian told a media briefing in Beijing. Meng, who was arrested in Vancouver in 2018 on a bank fraud warrant issued by the previous Trump administration, is still facing trial. In the list of wrongdoings, China urged the US to revoke the visa restrictions on members of the ruling Communist Party of China and their families unconditionally, revoke the sanctions on Chinese leaders, officials and government agencies, cancel visa restrictions on Chinese students and stop harassing them,
stop suppressing Chinese companies and “oppression” Confucius institutes, he said. In the second list, China has expressed concern over rejection of visas for Chinese students, the unfair treatment of Chinese citizens and harassment of the Chinese consulates and Embassy in the US and racial attacks on Chinese and Asians. Sherman arrived in China on Sunday evening from Mongolia. The meeting was held in Tianjin as Beijing is not hosting any foreign dignitaries due to COVID-19 protocols. On her arrival, she tweeted, “heartfelt condolences (from the United States) to those who have lost loved ones” in severe storms and flooding last week in China’s Henan province resulting in the deaths of 69 people.
ISLAMABAD, JUL 26 (PTI): At least 46 Afghan soldiers crossed over and took refuge in Pakistan’s northwestern Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa province after losing control of a border post to the Taliban militants along the international border, according to media reports on Monday. The Pakistan Army said the incident occurred late on Sunday night in Arundu sector in the country’s Chitral district when an Afghan National Army (ANA) local Commander requested the Pakistan Army for refuge and safe passage. According to a statement by the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), 46 soldiers, including five officers, belong to the ANA and Border Police as “they were unable to hold their military
posts along Pak-Afghan International Border due to the evolving security situation in Afghanistan.” The Pakistan Army contacted the Afghan authorities for information and necessary formalities. “After contact with Afghan authorities and necessary military procedures, 46 soldiers including 5 officers have been given refuge/ safe passage into Pakistan,” the Army said, adding that the Afghan soldiers have been provided food, shelter and necessary medical care
as per established military norms. It said that these soldiers will be returned to the Afghan government authorities in a dignified manner after due process, Dawn newspaper reported. Ever since the US announced to withdraw its troops from Afghanistan by September, the Taliban has stepped-up its offensive against Afghan security forces, forcing hundreds of soldiers and other officials to seek refuge in the neighbouring Pakistan, Iran and Tajikistan.

C
hief of Defence Staff General Bipin Rawat made a remarkable observation at the “Shershaah” trailer launch here on the eve of Kargil Vijay Diwas, observed every year on July 26. Param Vir Chakra recipient and Kargil war hero Captain Vikram Batra, whose life story “Shershaah” narrates on the Bollywood screen, was 22 when he joined the forces, and this year marks 22 years of the Kargil war, noted General Rawat on Sunday night. “We are happy that a film has been made on Captain Vikram Batra’s life at this point of time. We hope many more such films will be made on the bravehearts of India,” added General Rawat, who was chief guest at the event. The night at Dras saw real and reel heroes in attendance as the lead cast, producers and director of the film shared the stage with General Rawat, Commanding-in-Chief Northern Command General Y.K. Joshi and Captain Batra’s brother Vishal Batra. The

star cast, Sidharth Malhotra and Kiara Advani, talked of being fortunate to get a chance to work in a film that narrated such an honourable life story. Director Vishnuvardhan was present, too, along with producers Karan Johar, Apoorva Mehta and Shabbir Boxwala, and Vijay Subramaniam of Amazon Prime, the OTT channel that will stream the film on August 12. Each of them thanked the Army and the Batra family for making this film possible. As the Ladakh
Scouts Military Band played with gusto, and school children and a local orchestra group set the tone with patriotic rhythms and tunes, the mood was set to celebrate the most important event in India’s contemporary military history. The 527 brave soldiers who laid down their lives in the Kargil War were saluted, and families of the brave bereaved felicitated. The trailer launch was the highlight of the evening, preceded by a short “Kargil Tribute” featurette, remem-

lack Peaks have announced that they are splitting up. The Brighton fourpiece, who released their last studio album ‘All That Divides’ back in 2018, made the announcement earlier today (July 26). “The time has come to bring Black Peaks to its close,” the band’s statement begins. “Over the past four years, we have dealt with some incredibly hard and demanding situations which we have done our absolute best to work through. “Unfortunately, we
have reached a point where we don’t feel we can continue in a way that is healthy for us.” B l a c k Pe a k s t h e n thanked their family, friends and fans, saying: “Thank you for being the greatest support
network we could’ve ever hoped for. We have achieved things that we never thought would be possible when we began this journey. So, for supporting our vision, we owe you our utmost gratitude. “A special thank you to our team, who we believe to be some of the best in business. It has been our pleasure to learn from and grow with these wonderful humans over the last 10 years and we couldn’t have done it without them. ” (NME)
bering the valour of Captain Batra, and also acknowledging General Joshi and the Indian Army. The late evening function saw Karan Johar host a chunk of the proceedings, with the “Shershaah” launch occupying most of the proceedings. One by one, he invited on stage and introduced his film’s cast and crew, as well as the military top brass present. Sidharth, who essays Captain Vikram Batra, spoke of how the experience
of working on the project was more than shooting a film. “This is a story of a true hero, like all of you,” said Sidharth, addressing the army personnel gathered among the select audience. “I consider myself lucky to be able to bring alive the story of a real-life hero like all of you on screen. This is my first picture based on a true story and the experience has been more than a film to me,” added the actor, speaking in Hindi. His co-star Kiara Advani had a confession to make. “I stand before the Indian Army for the first time and I am nervous,” she said, thanking the Batra family and also Dimple Cheema, Captain Batra’s fiancee. It was a charged evening, high on the patriotic emotion, accentuated perhaps by the pristine open-air valley venue, ensconced in the midst of looming peaks. This was the serenity the Indian Army had fought to protected in 1999, and it was the fervour “Shershaah” the film will attempt to bring (IANS) alive.

Man Utd edging towards Varane deal
LONDON, JUL 26 (AGENCIES): Manchester United are edging towards a deal with Real Madrid defender Raphael Varane after more positive talks over the weekend. Varane, 28, has told Real he has no wish to extend his current contract, which still has a year to run. United are in discussions with the France international’s camp and Real. No agreement has been reached yet over a fee but there is an increasing feeling that talks will
eventually reach a successful conclusion. United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer made strengthening the centre of his side’s defence one of his key priorities this summer once an agreement w i t h Bor ussia Dortmund had been struck for England winger Jadon Sancho. T h a t £73m deal was

HARARE, JUL 26 (IANS): Soumya Sarkar returned figures of 2/19 with the ball before scoring a career-best 68 as Bangladesh defeated Zimbabwe by five wickets to take the T20 International series 2-1 at the Harare Sports Club. Opting to bat first on Sunday night, Zimbabwe scored 193 for 5 in the allotted 20 overs, but thanks to Sarkar’s career-best 68 the visitors won the match with four balls to spare. Zimbabwe were off to a flying start with openers Tadiwanashe Marumani and Wessley Madhevere taking the attack to the bowlers. The home side finished the powerplay at 63/1, with Mohammad Saifuddin claiming the wicket of Marumani on the last ball of the sixth over. Regis Chakabva joined Madhevere at the crease and ensured the scoring rate did not drop after the fielding restrictions as they raced to 101 at the end of 10 overs. It took a two-player catch off Sarkar on the boundary to bring Chakabva’s 22-ball 48 blitzkrieg to an end. Bangladesh’s chase of 194 got off to a bad start as they lost Mohammad Naim in the third over. Shakib and Sarkar kept the scoreboard ticking but didn’t really get going in the powerplay. Still needing 124 off 74 balls at that point, the visitors couldn’t afford to slow down and decided to take the attack to the opposition. Sarkar soon brought up his half-century and kept hitting crucial boundaries in the company of skipper Mahmudullah. BRIEF SCORES: Zimbabwe 193/5 in 20 overs (Wessley Madhevere 54, Regis Chakabva 48; Soumya Sarkar 2/19) lost to Bangladesh 194/5 in 19.2 overs (Soumya Sarkar 68, Mahmudullah 34; Luke Jongwe 2/42). India lose 0-2 to Germany in women’s hockey TOKYO, JUL 26 (PTI): T h e I n d i a n w o m e n’s hockey team went down 0-2 to Rio Games bronzemedallist Germany, its second consecutive defeat in Pool A at the Tokyo Olympics here on Monday. After the 1-5 drubbing at the hands of world no.1 Netherlands, the Indians lifted their game by a notch but it was not enough to get past world no.3 Germany at the Oi Hockey Stadium. The team was guilty of wasting a lot of opportunities, including a penalty stroke by Gurjit Kaur in the third quarter while luck also didn’t favour the Rani Rampalled side. Skipper Nike Lorenz

T O K YO, J U L 2 6 (AGENCIES): Hidilyn Diaz has become the first Olympic gold medalist from the Philippines after w i n n i n g t h e wo m e n’s 55-kilogram weightlifting category. Diaz overtook LIAO Q i u y u n o f Pe o p l e ’s Republic of China on her last lift in the clean and jerk to win with a total
224 kilograms, one more than Liao. China had won all three events so far and was hoping to sweep the gold medals in the eight competitions its athletes have entered. Liao came into the competition as the world record holder with a total of 227kg. Zulfiya Chinshanlo of Kazakhstan took bronze with 213kg.
TOKYO, JUL 27 (AP): Japanese pair Mizutani Jun and Ito Mima ended the People’s Republic of China’s recent dominance in the sport by beating Xu Xin and Liu Shiwen 4-3 for the mixed doubles title. The upset comes five years after China swept all four table tennis tournaments at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Games. It’s also the first time China has not won gold in singles, doubles or team table tennis since 2004. Hopes were still high for Japan entering the match, though. Mizutani won bronze in the singles

in Rio 2016, and some consider Ito to be China’s biggest threat in the female ranks. China got off to a fast start, winning the first two games 11-5 and 11-7. Japan fought back in the third game, winning 11-8, and
then took two more close games, 11-9 in the fourth and 11-9 in the fifth. China then won the sixth game, 11-6, to set up a deciding seventh game, which Japan dominated, taking an 8-0 lead and holding on for an 11-6 win
— and the gold. China’s table tennis team is so strong that Liu, the women’s world champion, didn’t even make the women’s singles’ team and is only playing team events. The Chinese pairing had beaten the French duo, Emmanuel Lebesson and Jia Nan Yuan, 4-0 in the semi-final to set up the gold-medal match, while the French headed to the bronze medal game against Chinese Taipei. The world number one pairing, Lin Yun-Ju and Cheng I-Ching, walked away with the bronze after beating the French duo, 4-0.
