DIMAPUR, JUN 27 (NPN): Union Minister of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, Narendra Singh Tomar said that Government of India wants to realize the country’s vision of all-round and balanced development. For this, reason Tomar said Prime Minister Narendra Modi believes that if the strength of the Northeast grows, the country’s strength will consolidate, and the nation will move forward. Tomar, who was on a two-day visit to Nagaland, said this at a gathering at ‘Angh House’, North East Agri Expo here on Monday. During the day, Tomar also launched the Honey Testing Laboratory to help beekeepers and processors for testing the honey produced, besides visiting the Bamboo Museum and Organic AC Market. Highlighting the Central government’s focus on

development of the Northeast, he remarked that even though majority of the meetings of Central teams were held in Guwahati earlier, now the focus was to reach every State of the region. He added that the Central teams also visited the region to look into aspects where Centre’s intervention was required and expedite them, rather than listening from Guwahati problems of other North Eastern States. “When the Northeast moves forward, the entire

Prez polls: Yashwant files nomination NEW DELHI, JUN 27 (PTI): Former union minister Yashwant Sinha filed his nomination on Monday as the common opposition candidate against NDA nominee Droupadi Murmu for the July 18 presidential election, a contest described by his supporters as a “battle of ideologies”. The 84-year-old, accompanied by his wife Nilima and flanked by leaders of at least 15 opposition parties including Rahul Gandhi, Sharad Pawar, Akhilesh Yadav, Farooq Abdullah and K T Rama Rao, submitted four sets of nomination papers to Rajya Sabha Secretary General P C Mody, who is

DIMAPUR, JUN 27 (NPN): Central Nagaland Tribes Council (CNTC) has reminded chief minister Neiphu Rio about its demands for resumption of oil exploration and extraction in Nagaland. In a representation to chief minister Neiphiu Rio, CNTC president, T. Lanu Imchen and general secretary Er. Tsungrosan Kithan expressed regret that despite having made several appeals in the past on resumption of oil operations in Nagaland, no action has been taken for reasons best known to the government. According to CNTC natural oil reserves in Nagaland would become

valueless in due course of time due to advancement in technology where usage of fossil fuelswould become redundant in the near future. CNTC said it was

therefore, pertinent that the state utilise its natural oil reserve immediately so that there was also sufficient internal revenue generation for the government and also to benefit the land owners. While referring to the application for Petroleum Exploration Licence (PEL) in 2019 to the state government from the Oil India Ltd.(OIL), which has exploration license in the bloc comprising Kohima, Mokokchung, Wokha and Zunheboto districts, CNTC said the three years was a long time in granting PEL. CNTC also demanded that Champang oilfield which remained closed since

1994 be reopened for oil extraction. It also alleged that the State government’s plea in the guise of non-natural oil entity was due to vested interest and an attempt to pull the wool over the eyes of people. CNTC also insisted that the State government should also demand all drilling and deviation programme for oilfields in disputed areas from ONGC and recover the royalty that was due to Nagaland. CNTC therefore appealed to the chief minister to take up the matter in earnest while also assuring of its full cooperation in this regard.

Rupee declines to life-time low MUMBAI, JUN 27 (PTI): The rupee declined by 4 paise to close at its life-time low of 78.37 against US dollar Monday due to persistent foreign fund outflows and slowdown fears. Firm crude oil prices in the international market and weak macro data put pressure on the domestic unit. However, a weak dollar overseas supported the local currency, forex dealers said. At the interbank forex market, the local unit opened sharply higher at 78.24 against the greenback, but pared all of its initial gains to settle lower by 4 paise at a record low of 78.37.

NEW DELHI, JUN 27 (PTI): India logged 17,073 new coronavir us infections, raising its tally to 4,34,07,046, while the daily positivity rate crossed 5 per cent after over four months, the Union Health Ministry said on Monday. The death toll climbed to 5,25,020 with 21 fresh fatalities, data updated at 8 am by the ministry stated. The active cases increased to 94,420, comprising 0.22 per cent of the total infections. The national COVID-19 recovery rate was recorded at 98.57 per cent, the ministry said. An increase of 1,844 cases was recorded in the active COVID-19 case count in a span of 24 hours, as per the data. GUWAHATI, JUN 27 (AGENCIES): The Tatmadaw or Myanmar Army has left the Taga areas of Sagaing, Myanmar, which were captured in January 29, 2019 from the Northeast-based insurgent groups, a NEWS18 report stated citing sources. A top insurgent leader from Sagaing confirmed: “The Myanmar Army left the Taga areas on June 15.” The operation was carried out by the Army against Northeast insurgent groups on the continuous “Since ban on single use pressure of Indian governplastic, you can buy this ment. country moves forward,” he emphasised. Urging State governments of the region to work hard so that all Central schemes were implemented properly, the minister claimed that the Centre, in coordination with funding partners, was trying its best so that the region could achieve self-sustainability. Tomar further said Northeast, especially Nagaland, had a huge potential of becoming a hub for export of organic produce.

He, therefore, urged upon the region, particularly Nagaland, to identify crops or produces that had a competitive edge over other States in the country. He stressed introduction of Kissan Railways, which allows export of produce to reach end-users or consumers within 24 to 48 hours, as a forward marketing linkage. He said this would allow supply of perishable goods in good condition to consumers, thereby allowing the farmers to get access to markets and thus benefiting the local economy. In his speech, agriculture and cooperation minister G Kaito Aye said agri and allied sectors provided best scope for economic development of Nagaland, adding that the sectors made a significant contribution to the State’s annual Gross State Domestic Product (GSDP), about 45%, and also had the largest workforce.

Bar uah-led ULFA-I, B Swaraigra-led NDFB, Jeevan Singha Kuch-led KLO, IK Sangbijit-led PDCK and other Manipur-based insurgent groups operated their headquarters (HQs) with the help of NSCN (K). After the crackdown on all Indian-origin insurgent groups in Taga, one company of 252 battalion of Hkamti Brigade was camping at the NSCN (K)’s HQs. The top insurgent leader from Sagaing said, “The army company which was camping at Taga left the area on June 15. The abandoned HQs are now under jungle cover. Villag-

ers are using the land for cultivation.” A strategic analyst said, “Taga is a very important place for Indianorigin insurgent groups to get the arms from China. It’s important for the Myanmar Army too to control the Kachin Independent Organisation (KIO) and its armed wing, Kachin Independent Army (KIO).” “The Myanmar Army seized control on February 1, 2021 after a general election, in which Aung San Suu Kyi’s National League for Democracy (NLD) party won by a landslide. Indian-origin insurgent groups made a secret deal with the military to help the

forces fight against the antimilitary Peoples Defence Force (PDF). The Indiabased insurgent groups are fighting for the Myanmar Army against the PDF. That’s why Myanmar Army recently left the Taga areas for insurgent groups.” Talking to News18, former special director general (Special Branch) of Assam Police Pallav Bhattacharya said, “Operation Sunrise was launched by Tatmadaw against Northeast militants in Taga area of Sagaing Division of Myanmar in 2019 in collaboration with India, which shares a boundary of 1640 km. Owing to PDF strikes

with the help of ethnic militia against Tatmadaw and the consequent casualties, it had to withdraw from this strategic area.” “The prevailing situation in Taga area of Myanmar due to PDF activity against Tatmadaw is conducive for militant activities of Northeast India,” Bhattacharya added. Taga, the village on the northeast of Sagaing region of Myanmar, is the easiest route connecting Southern Sagaing to Naga-dominated Northern Sagaing of Nanyung district. KIA’s 10th brigade is located in the Western Kachin which is opposite to Taga.

plantations happened. PRO, however, could not confirm whether it was the Assam police or forest personnel as their uniforms were similar. He said that situation was under control and no untoward incidents reported on Monday. PRO also stated that since 13 IR has its battalion headquarters at Yajang, the personnel were patrolling the area. Meanwhile, when contacted over phone, Yajang C village council chairman Imtionen, narrated an incident in detail. He alleged that at around 10.30 am on Sunday, Assam

police along with villagers from Ramkham in Assam intruded into the village and destroyed plantations and nurseries besides spraying herbicides on paddy fields. The council chairman also alleged that this was the third such incidents this year occurred within a span of three months (April, May and June). Asked about the situation, the chairman said that nothing happened on Monday. He further said that volunteers from the village had gone to the site Monday and stood guard, but no incident occurred.

NPSC reacts to social media post DIMAPUR, JUN 27 (NPN): Nagaland Public Service Commission has sharply reacted to a report circulating on social media, which purportedly claims that certain candidates (three in number) have qualified for viva-voce without even appearing written examination. NPSC secretary John Tsulise Sangtam stated that while the commission welcomes constructive criticism, certain individuals tend to pull down the image and prestige of the institution at the slightest available opportunity instead of trying to uphold. Tsulise admitted that Routine for Combined Tech-

nical Services Examination 2021 was updated in the commission’s website on September 20, 2021 and a revised/updated routine was uploaded again on September 24, 2021. He said it was necessitated on account of one post of archivist having been reconsidered in accordance with the user department’s clarification letter received vide dated September 21, 2021, wherein the requisite educational qualification for archivist should have (i) PG in History or (ii) an MA with Diploma in Archives and that candidates in History should not be rejected on the basis of “No Diploma in Archives”. KO H I M A , J U N 2 7 (NPN): With an objective to support Persons with Disabilities (PwDs) by enabling them to live their lives with dignity and to raise awareness on acceptance of disabilities in the community, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between the Nagaland State Rural Livelihoods Mission (NSRLM) and office of the State Commissioner for Persons with Disabilities (PwDs), here, on Monday. Speaking at the programme, state commissioner, Persons with Disabilities, Diethono Nakhro pointed out that in Nagaland, a total of 29,631 people had disabilities. S h e, h o w e ve r i n formed that this was “a very conservative figure” and in reality, she said there were thousands more living with different kinds of disabilities in the state. Po i n t i n g o u t t h a t PwDs were more likely to live in poverty than persons without disabilities, Nakhro said this was due to barriers such as stigma and discrimination, inaccessible environments, limited access to education

She added that women with disabilities also faced more difficulties with existing gender biases, placing more disabled women and girls at higher risk of gender-based violence, sexual abuse, neglect and exploitation. AR accused of implicating ‘Naga army cadres’ under dubious charges DIMAPUR: GPRN/NSCN Monday, accused the 38 Assam Rifles (C-Coy) of Meluri post under the commandership of Maj. Raishing Tangkhul of “continued self-styled transgressions and implicating/ tainting the Naga army cadres of the area under dubious charges time and again.” Strongly condemning the 38 Assam Rifles C-Coy of Meluri Post, GPRN/NSCN though its MIP said they have “once again engaged to orchestrate” in apprehending its member “Captain” Mhabemo Lotha on “an ungrounded accusation” of possessing a country-made pistol on June 22, 2022 at around 11:30pm at Meluri town. On that night, MIP said that “Capt.” Mhabemo Lotha considering the prevailing congenial atmosphere and in response to the call from 2nd i/c of the AR Coy, had gone to meet him without any inhibition at Meluri main town “sensing some important bilateral matter.” However, MIP said that on reaching the spot, he was immediately apprehended and charged of possessing firearm, which “they (38 AR, C-Coy) have surreptitiously planted on him (the Naga army officer).” MIP claimed it was “a matter of unfounded implication for a deceitful motive and interest” since the “Naga

Nagaland Post VOL. XXXII NO. 202 DIMAPUR, TUESDAY, JUNE 28, 2022

Time to call it a day

W

hat the current political development in Maharashtra has again brought to focus is the way parliamentary democracy has been trampled at the alter of opportunism. The all too familiar charade that has been repeated over the decades following withdrawal of support to a government which after losing majority continues to cling to power through specious means only strangulates and weakens democracy. As per conventions of parliamentary democracy , a party or a coalition that does not have majority cannot stake claim to form the government and also, in the event a government formed by a single political party or a coalition having lost majority support in the house, should not cling to power. However in practice, Indian parliamentary democracy appears to be based on perception where a party with minority support can be called to form a government and a party of coalition reduced to minority can still be made to cling power through a buy-back scheme. These have happened throughout India during the recent decades and despite litigation in courts, there seems to be no change. In the ongoing Maharashtra political crisis majority of the Sena’s 55 MLAs (one seat falling vacant) have joined the faction led by Sena rebel leader Eknath Shinde. The rebel MLAs claim they have around 40 MLAs out of the 55. The MVA government which had 152 legislators before the rebellion within the Shiv Sena, comprised of : Shiv Sena-55 MLAS, NCP -53 and Congress -44. After around 40 rebel Sena MLAs joined Eknath Shinde, the strength of the MVA coalition has been reduced from 152 to 112 while the BJP-NDA has 106 MLAs. As the rebel Sena MLAs are certain of forming an alliance with the BJP, the strength of the NDA group will (BJP+ 7 Independent MLAs) and with the 40-odd Sena rebels has shot up to 153. Thus the MVA coalition with 112 MLAs is in a minority as against the Sena rebel group plus BJP and independent MLAs having a total of 152 MLAs . The old game and tired game of disqualification by the Speaker or deputy speaker to reduce the number of rebel MLAs and then place the remaining under the same act is against the principle of parliamentary democracy. First of all, if MLAs who have rebelled against the government comprise of 2/3rd of the total strength of the party, then there should be no question of disqualification of any of them by the speaker of deputy speaker as per the Anti Defection Law. The rebels may present themselves before the speaker as well as the governor to prove that they have decided on their own volition. After this is done, the government has no option and with least delay, be prepared to face the floor test. Once defeated the government should resign without further ado. As there is no doubt that the MVA government has lost majority, the beleaguered Uddhav Thackeray coalition should not resort to delay tactics. The MVA minority government has not business to remain in office even for a day. Uddhav Thackeray has only invited trouble on himself by allowing the NCP and his son Aditya to ride roughshod over the Sena MLAs and the MVA government. Also if Sena MLAs were able to move out of Mumbai in droves to join Shinde group in Guwahati also confirms that Uddhav never had been far removed from reality.

DailyDevotion The Overshadowing of God’s Personal Deliverance

“…I am with you to deliver you,” says the Lord. —Jeremiah 1:8 God promised Jeremiah that He would deliver him personally— “…your life shall be as a prize to you…” (Jeremiah 39:18). That is all God promises His children. Wherever God sends us, He will guard our lives. Our personal property and possessions are to be a matter of indifference to us, and our hold on these things should be very loose. If this is not the case, we will have panic, heartache, and distress. Having the proper outlook is evidence of the deeply rooted belief in the overshadowing of God’s personal deliverance. The Sermon on the Mount indicates that when we are on a mission for Jesus Christ, there is no time to stand up for ourselves. Jesus says, in effect, “Don’t worry about whether or not you are being treated justly.” Looking for justice is actually a sign that we have been diverted from our devotion to Him. Never look for justice in this world, but never cease to give it. If we look for justice, we will only begin to complain and to indulge ourselves in the discontent of self-pity, as if to say, “Why should I be treated like this?” If we are devoted to Jesus Christ, we have nothing to do with what we encounter, whether it is just or unjust. In essence, Jesus says, “Continue steadily on with what I have told you to do, and I will guard your life. If you try to guard it yourself, you remove yourself from My deliverance.” Even the most devout among us become atheistic in this regard— we do not believe Him. We put our common sense on the throne and then attach God’s name to it. We do lean to our own understanding, instead of trusting God with all our hearts (see Proverbs 3:5-6).

Post-mortem

Why are Sena rebels not Citizen uprisings but no opposition returning for floor test? I

T

With parts of Assam reeling with flood, the MLAs in the five-star hotel come across as insensitive

he Sena rebels seem to be running out of time and losing support on the ground as the political crisis enters its 2nd week. Many of them are said to have sent feelers that they would like to rejoin. Why were the Shiv Sena rebels taken away to Assam and not to the BJP-ruled states of Goa, Karnataka or Madhya Pradesh? Why couldn’t they stay in the BJP citadel of Gujarat? And, finally why is Shinde still reluctant to return and demand a floor test? These are some of the questions being asked in political circles in Maharashtra. Photographs and videos of the rebels playing chess, eating and drinking in the Radisson Blu Hotel in Guwahati have done little to endear them to the people either in Assam or back here in Maharashtra. Juicy stories of the rebels being lavishly entertained have been doing the rounds, inviting more ridicule by the day. Moreover, with parts of Assam reeling with flood, the MLAs in the five-star hotel come across as insensitive. The longer they stay there, the more the distance that grows between them and their constituents. It has been suggested that Eknath Shinde opted for Guwahati because of the Kamakhya Temple there. Known to be a Tantrik and Assam and the temple known for Tantrik rites, Shinde presumably was confident that he would be able to invoke the blessings of the goddess. While he did visit the temple to pray, it is not certain how pleased the goddess is with him since the buzz is that half the MLAs have sent feelers to the party, indicating their willingness to rejoin the party. It is partly because the rebels are waking up to the legal hurdles they face. It is also because the Shiv Sena is not just a regional party but a well-knit grassroot organisation and a movement. It is the movement which gives every Shiv Sainik his unique identity on the ground. And by all accounts the rebels are still not receiving much support on the ground. Sooner or later, they will have to return to their constituency

I

to test it. In the meanwhile, legal eagles believe that the rebels have the option of merging with the BJP—which would give them short term reprieve but which would basically seal their political future. The other option open to them is to merge with the Prahar Party, which has two MLAs in the Maharashtra Assembly. Both of them are recognised as Independent MLAs. One of them is the founder Bachchu Kadu, who supports the BJP and is known for his aggressive militant tactics of terrorising officials, beating up opponents and otherwise being a nuisance - everything that the Shiv Sena was under Bal Thackeray, in fact. The Sena MLAs would however rather not play second fiddle to Kadu, who is unlikely to give them a free rein and the prospect of becoming Independent MLAs from being the ruling party MLAs is clearly not alluring enough. An Assembly session would have to be called shortly to meet the requirements of a functioning government but without the rebel MLAs, the MVA still has more numbers than the BJP in the House. The legalities of conducting business without the rebels is being examined and Shinde would have to thwart it through judicial intervention, if possible. With Shinde facing much loss of face and capital, there is also the suspicion that many of the rebel MLAs may actually vote with Uddhav Thackeray in the House. That suspicion is why Shinde is said to be reluctant to bring back the MLAs for a floor test in the Assembly. The political drama enters the second week, possibly a decisive week, with time running out for rebels. And with Sharad Pawar saying openly that it is his duty to protect his friend Bal Thackeray’s son and political heir, emotions on the streets are running high—something that the rebels will have to contend with. Sujata Anandan (As published in National Herald)

f Narendra Modi’s first term in office abounded with brazen institutional subversion, his second has been beleaguered by spirited citizenly uprisings. In the weeks leading to the coronavirus pandemic, lest we forget, the prime minister was besieged by a wave of challenges. Protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act, erupting months after the BJP’s triumphant re-election in 2019, had spread to every major city by early 2020. Modi, having grown accustomed to spectacles of submission by the public, was rattled by this show of defiance. His government invoked a colonial-era law to ban gatherings of more than four people, intermittently suspended the internet, and mobilised its base by amplifying sectarian messaging. As police truncheons bloodied young protestors in Delhi, Modi lashed out at rootless cosmopolitans and Muslim troublemakers, supposedly identifiable by their clothing. The script did not yield the intended result. Across the country, Indians of all faiths joined to proclaim their allegiance to secularism—the foundational basis of the republic. Their song was the national anthem, their standard the Indian flag, and their holy book the Indian Constitution. In Delhi, Hindus formed a human chain to protect Muslim worshippers. In Hyderabad, tens of thousands of Muslims recited the preamble to the Indian Constitution: “We, the people of India, having solemnly resolved to constitute India into a sovereign socialist secular democratic republic…” The pandemic granted Modi a reprieve, but did not extinguish the indignation incubated by his attempts to remake India in accordance with his ideology. If anything it clarified the supreme contradiction of the “New India”: the prime minister has a dominant majority in Parliament and appears invincible at the polls—and yet his reign has provoked the most persistent dissent on the street in memory. The harrowing experi-

ence of the lockdowns should not eclipse the fact that 2020 was a year also of the most sustained democratic uproar against a government anywhere in the world. Measured by numbers, the demonstrations against the BJP’s labour laws and farm laws—drawing hundreds of millions of people—were the largest in human history. Laws were railroaded and rubber-stamped through Parliament, which has given up even the pretence of deliberation, but their promulgation was overwhelmed by public backlash. Shift of Indian democracy Indian democracy began as a top-down experiment. It originated in the minds of our founding personalities who raised and nurtured the institutions for its exercise. When the American author Norman Cousins asked Jawaharlal Nehru to outline his legacy, he answered: “Hopefully, four hundred million people capable of governing themselves.” The protests of the past three years reveal the depth to which the inclusive nationalism propagated by the architects of our republic has percolated in the past seven decades. For every Indian violently asserting his or her communal identity, a substantially greater number of Indians are (for the most part) peacefully affirming their citizenly identity. Indian democracy today is effectively a bottom-up phenomenon: it is ordinary Indians who are performing the role of formal opposition to the government. And if India is the site of democracy’s institutional decay, it is also the setting for its civic reclamation. This is no cause for comfort or congratulation, however, because a million spontaneous mutinies, no matter how exalted their motivation, can only culminate in anarchy if their rage is not absorbed into an organised movement. And what is missing in India is a democratic outfit capable of sublimating the dispersed fury of Indians into disciplined political agitation. What remains of the of-

ficial opposition could learn from the Right. The electoral breakthrough of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) was deferred through the 1980s by smaller regional parties and the not unimportant fact that the BJP’s malign image, personified by L.K. Advani, ensured that most factions remained allergic to an alliance led by it. So Advani, because he placed a greater value on his ideology than his personal ambition, handed his party’s leadership to Atal Bihari Vajpayee in 1995. Contrast this to today. The leadership of Congress, India’s only other credible pan-national party, refuses to relinquish control despite the majoritarian threat to the country. The one event that prompted Congress—an indolent spectator to the people’s protests that jolted Modi—to mobilise its troops was the summons issued to Rahul Gandhi by the Enforcement Directorate in the National Herald case. Crowds were bussed in to the capital and every MP and party official was instructed by the “high command” to materialise in Delhi and march behind the prince. It is difficult to imagine a more egregious insult to the patriotic multitudes exposing themselves to physical harm to foil the government’s excesses than the squalid pantomime organised by the Gandhi dynasty and its lickspittles. The lesson of India is this: Democracies can survive authoritarians; they cannot survive the absence of an energetic opposition. It is perhaps too late for the Congress to marshal a movement capable of defeating Modi in 2024. But there is time enough for it to retool itself sufficiently to restrict the BJP’s margin of victory. The ordinary people of India are gallantly performing their citizenly duty. They are being thwarted by one family and its minions. have emerged as the only G-20 nation and only major economy whose energy transition actions are consistent with a sub 20 rise in global temperature. The scale of the transformation in unparalleled in the histry of the world. As we achieved our NDC targets well in advance, we have increased our targets in COP-26 taking the pledge to install 500 GWs of Non-Fossil Fuel capacity by 2030. We have also pledged to reduce our CO2 emissions by 1 billion tonnes by 2030 additionally. We shall achieve these targets. The Government have brought the comprehensive reforms covering the entire gamut of the power sector. The Government has made the provision of a Letter of Credit compulsory for the flow of power and brought down the late payment surcharge from 18% to 12%. For the first time in the history of the Power Sector, we have laid down Rules spelling out the Rights for Consumers which include timelines for the grant of connection, for replacement of defective meters, correction of bills etc. The process of recovery of costs due to a ‘Change in the Law’ has been simplified under the Modi Government. We have put in place Rules to provide for flexibility in scheduling, providing for the most efficient generating stations to be scheduled first. This has reduced the cost of power for consumers. We have separated the CTU from POWERGRID to bring in transparency. The Rules for connectivity to the transmission network have been simplified by putting in place General newspaper nor that of the

Network Access Rules. We have expanded the market – bringing in the Real-Time Market; and putting in place separate Term Ahead and Day-Ahead Market for Renewable Energy. We have provided for the bundling of Renewable Energy with Thermal Energy and Bio-Mass cofirings in thermal power plants. We also provided for GENCOS to be able to sell power in the Exchange in case it is not scheduled by the PPA holder. In order to ensure the viability of the system and bring in financial discipline, the Government has made fund flows under all schemes and grant loans from PFC and REC conditional on their undertaking reforms. As a result of this 36 DISCOMs have agreed to timelines for the reduction of AT&C losses and ACS-ARR gap as well as clearance of subsidy and government dues. Corporate Reforms are being put in place in DISCOMs. We have put in place a new Rating System for Distribution Companies which puts reforms in governance of DISCOMs at the forefront. The scale of comprehensive reforms undertaken across the entire plethora of the power system is unparalleled by any other period of the previous governments. Before this no other government had ever touched Distribution Sector Reforms. In line with the vision of the PM Narendra Modi, we are working towards a brighter India, with the mission of “power to the future of the nation”. R.K. SC puts in abeyance disqualification proceedings against rebel Sena MLAs

NEW DELHI, JUN 27 (PTI): In a relief to rebel Shiv Sena MLAs in Maharashtra, the Supreme Court on Monday kept in abeyance the disqualification proceedings before the Deputy Speaker of the state Assembly till July 11, and also sought responses from the state government and others on their pleas questioning the legality of notices seeking their disqualification. A vacation bench of Justices Surya Kant and J B Pardiwala also refused to pass any interim order on a vehement plea by senior advocate Devdutt Kamat, appearing for the MVA government, that in the meantime there should not be any floor test in the Assembly. The court said the state government can always approach it in case of any illegality. Directing the Uddhav Thackeray-led Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government to protect the “life, liberty, and property” of the 39 rebel Shiv Sena MLAs, headed by minister Eknath Shinde, and their family members, the top court said the rebels may file replies to

the disqualification notices till 5:30 pm on July 12. “Meanwhile as an interim measure, the time granted by the Deputy Speaker of the Assembly to the petitioners or other similarly placed Members of the Legislative Assembly to submit their written submissions up to today by 5.30 pm is extended till July 12, 2022.” The top court, while posting the matter for further hearing on July 11, said it wants the status quo to continue till it balances competing claims made by rival Sena camps. Shinde and 15 other rebel Shiv Sena MLAs have moved the top court challenging the disqualification notices issued by the Deputy Speaker under the Tenth Schedule of Constitution on grounds including defection. Besides Shinde, the other 15 MLAs are Bharat Gogawale, Prakash R Surve, Tanhaji Jaywant Savant, Mahesh S Shinde, Abdul Sattar, Sandeepan A Bhumre, Sanjay P Sirhsat, Yamini Y Jadhav, Anil K Babar, Latabai C Sonawane, Ramesh N Bornare, Sanjay

B Raimulkar, Chimanrao R Patil, Balaji D Kalyankar and Balaji P Kinilkar. While issuing the notice to the Maharashtra Deputy Speaker, the top court directed him to put on affidavit the records of no trust notice served upon him by the rebel MLAs who have relied upon on the Nabam Rebia judgement to drive home the point that he cannot proceed with the disqualification proceedings when the resolution seeking his own removal is pending. The top court also recorded the statement of Maharashtra’s counsel that adequate steps have been taken to protect the life and property of rebel MLAs. “Counsel for the State of Maharashtra states that adequate steps have been already taken and the State Government shall further ensure that no harm is caused to the lives, liberty and properties of the 39 MLAs and their families “ the court said in its order. At the outset, senior advocate Neeraj Kishan Kaul, appearing for Shinde and other rebel MLAs,

submitted that the Deputy Speaker cannot proceed with the disqualification proceedings when the resolution seeking his removal is pending. He referred to the Constitution bench decision of the apex court in the “Nabam Rebia” case in which it was held that it would be constitutionally impermissible for a Speaker to adjudicate upon disqualification petitions under the Tenth Schedule while a notice of resolution for his own removal from the office of Speaker is pending. At this juncture, the bench asked why the rebel Shiv Sena MLAs did not move the Bombay High Court against disqualification notice issued by the Deputy Speaker. Kaul replied that existence of Article 226 is not a constitutional bar to invoke Article 32 of Constitution to approach the top court. Kaul claimed that the Uddhav Thackeray group is in ‘minority’ and ‘subverting’ the state machinery and attacking the houses of rebel Sena MLAs.

Activists and advocates demand release of Teesta

C H E N NA I , J U N 2 7 (AGENCIES): The People’s Union for Civil Liberties, a civil society organisation, and activists condemned the arrest of civil rights activist Teesta Setalvad along with retired police officers for fighting justice for the victims of Gujarat riot in 2002. Senior advocates of Madras HC NGR Prasad, human rights activist Biraj Patnaik and representatives of civil society activists, addressing the media on Monday, demanded that the false and vindictive FIR against Setalvad and others be withdrawn unconditionally and they be released immediately. The judgement of the SC in the case of Zakia Jafri vs State of Gujarat, dismissing the petition filed by Jafri calling for investigation into the conspiracy to hatch the events resulting in communal violence following the Godhra train burning, deepened the sense of injustice and marks a moment of profound hurt and loss, said V Suresh, national general secretary of PUCL, in a statement.

Alt News co-founder Zubair arrested for hurting religious sentiments NEW DELHI, JUN 27 (AGENCIES): Alt News co-founder Mohammed Zubair was arrested by the Delhi Police on Monday for allegedly hurting sentiments. According to media reports, Zubair has been charged under Section 153 (Wantonly giving provocation with intent to cause riot—if rioting be committed—if not committed) and 295A (Outraging religious feelings of any class) of the Indian Penal Code. “Today, during the course of investigation of a case registered u/s 153A/295A IPC against Mohammed Zubair, he joined in the investigation and after having sufficient evidence on record, he was arrested. He is being produced before the duty magistrate for seeking further PC remand,” said the police. Social media post The police added that the case was registered based on a complaint regarding an offending tweet allegedly posted by Zubair.

Mohammed Zubair

“The said post of Mohd. Zubair containing picture and words against a particular religious community are highly provocative and done deliberately which are more than sufficient to incite hatred among people which can be detrimental for maintenance of public tranquility,” a senior Delhi police official said, adding that a case was lodged on the basis of a social media post by the complainant. “During investigation, conduct of Mohd Zubair was found questionable, which warranted his custodial interrogation to unravel conspiracy in this matter. Accordingly, he has been arrested and is be-

ing produced before court for seeking police custody remand,” a senior police officer said. No notice given: Pratik Sinha Alt News co-founder Pratik Sinha tweeted that Zubai was called on Monday by the special cell “regarding probe in a 2020 case for which he already had protection against arrest from the High Court”. “Around 6.45pm, we were told Zubair has been arrested in some other FIR for which no notice was given which is mandatory under law for the section under which he has been arrested. No FIR copy is being given to us despite repeated requests,” he added. Zubair was reportedly one of the first people to tweet about Nupur Sharma’s controversial remarks about Prophet Mohammed. The issue snowballed into a global embarrassment for India as well as the BJP-led government. Sharma was eventually suspended from the party.

To encourage youth, entrepreneurs, FPOs, FPCs, SHGs, etc, he said the State government initiated a start-up programme called “Naturally Nagaland” to monetise poor and marginal farmers in post-harvest management and marketing so that they could package their produce in any brand under the banner of Naturally Nagaland. NEW DELHI, JUN 27 (PTI): Former Punjab DGP Dinkar Gupta on Monday took over as the Director General of the National Investigation Agency (NIA), an anti-terror probe agency formed after the 26/11 terror attack in Mumbai, and called for “expeditious investigation” and prosecution of offences of terror that affect security of the country. The appointment of Dinkar, a 1987-batch IPS officer from Punjab cadre, comes at a time when Pakistan’s snooping agency ISI is seen making attempts of revamping terrorism in the state which has witnessed nearly 50 incidents of IED recoveries, Pro-Khalistan posters, nabbing terrorists from banned organizations like Babbar Khalsa International (BKI), besides threats to political leadership in the state as well as neighbouring Haryana. poll promises in the form of “guarantees”, remained silent on giving Rs 1,000 to each woman in the state. However, Cheema said the state government will soon fulfil this “guarantee”. The finance minister stressed that the government will fulfil its promise of giving 300 units of free electricity per month to each household from July 1, saying it has already planned to finance this scheme by cutting wasteful expenditure and through enhancement of own tax revenue. Providing 300 units of free power will put an additional burden of Rs 1,800 crore on the state exchequer, said Cheema. The AAP government had announced giving 300 units of free power to every household from July 1.

CHANDIGARH, JUN 27 (PTI): Presenting the AAP government’s first budget, Punjab Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema on Monday announced providing 300 units of free electricity to households from July 1, setting up of 117 Mohalla Clinics and upgrading 100 schools as ‘schools of eminence’ in the state among other proposals. The Bhagwant Mannled government also announced setting up cybercrime control units in all districts of the state while keeping its focus on health, education, agriculture and police modernisation. Cheema did not announce any new tax in the budget for 2022-23 and chose to rely on an expected jump in revenue receipts and buoyancy in GST collections by plugging loopholes for funding the proposed expenditure in the budget. The budget of the government led by AAP, which came to power while making

giving 300 units of free electricity, quality education, improving health infrastructure and raising compensation to families of martyred soldiers—have been fulfilled. Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann termed the first budget as a balanced, development-oriented and reflective of pro-people policies of the state government. He hailed the budget for FY 2022-23, which proposes no new taxes, as a roadmap for “New Punjab”. Cheema presented the first paperless budget in the ongoing assembly session and this step is expected to save Rs 21 lakh per annum. Among new proposals, Cheema announced setting up of modern digital classrooms in 500 government schools to bring quality education in villages, upgrading 100 existing schools as “schools of eminence” and posting estate managers for a cluster of schools for the upkeep of government schools and a comprehensive scheme for installation of roof top solar panel sys-

Russia ‘pouring fire’ on Ukrainian city

Police officers put a dead body of a man killed by Russian shelling on the ground by his car in Slavyansk, Donetsk region. (AP/PTI)

S LOV I A N S K / K I E V, JUN 27 (AP/IANS): Russia was mounting an all-out assault on the last Ukrainian stronghold in the eastern Luhansk region, “pouring fire” on the city of Lysychansk from the ground and air, the local governor said Monday, as Western leaders met to discuss ways of bolstering support for Kyiv. Luhansk Gov. Serhiy Haidai said Russian forces were pummeling Lysychansk after capturing the neighboring city of Sievierodonetsk in recent days. It’s part of a steppedup Russian offensive to wrest the broader Donbas region from Ukrainian government control in what Western experts say has become the new main goal of President Vladimir Putin’s war in Ukraine, now in its fifth month. “They’re pouring fire on the city both from the air and from the ground. the takeover of Sievierodonetsk, the enemy army has concentrated all its forces on capturing (our) last stronghold in the Luhansk region: Lysychansk,” Haidai told The Associated Press. The Russians were trying to blockade the city from the south, “destroying everything that their artillery and multiple rocket launchers can reach,” Haidai said. Over the past week, the Russian army has captured several villages and towns southeast of Lysychansk, now a staging area for airstrikes and shelling attacks. The office of President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said at least six civilians were killed and 31 others injured as part of intense Russian shelling against various cities over the past 24 hours — including Kyiv and major cities in the country’s south and east. It said Russian rocket attacks killed two and

injured five overnight in Kharkiv, Ukraine’s secondlargest city, and its surrounding area. Russian forces also continued to target the key southern port of Odesa, with a missile attack destroying residential buildings and injuring six, including a child, it said. The southern city of Mykolaiv likewise saw Russian shells hit civilian infrastructure, including a kindergarten, the president’s press office said. It did not give details of any casualties. In Lysychansk, at least five high-rise buildings in the city and the last road bridge were damaged over the past day, Haidai said. A crucial highway linking the city to government-held territory further south was rendered impassable because of shelling — but it hasn’t been captured, he said. Such shelling is also making the evacuation of

civilians increasingly difficult, Haidai said. The city had a pre-war population of around 100,000, approximately half of whom remain. Analysts say that Lysychansk’s location high on the banks of the Siverskiy Donets river, as well as its large area dotted with hills, give a major advantage to the city’s Ukrainian defenders. “It’s a very hard nut to crack. The Russians could spend many months and much effort storming Lysychansk,” military analyst Oleh Zhdanov told the AP. The Siverskiy Donets river encloses Lysychansk from the north and east, while the Ukrainian army continues to hold territory west of the city, which it uses to supply arms and humanitarian aid. Moscow has now moved to attempt to block Lysychansk from the south.

War should end before winter sets in: Zelensky tells G7 In a virtual address to the G7 Summit, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said on Monday that he wanted the ongoing war waged by Russia against his country to end before winter. The BBC reported that the Ukrainian President asked the G7 leaders reconstruction aid, antiaircraft defence systems, help on grain exports and security guarantees.

He also asked to “intensify sanctions” on Russia. A day before his address, Zelenksy said in his address to the nation that delaying arms deliveries to Ukraine was “an invitation to Russia to strike again and again”, reports the BBC. “Par tners need to move faster if they are really partners, not observers,” he said and called for air defence systems.

Pak participation in BRICS ‘blocked by 1 member’: FO ISLAMABAD/BEIJING, JUN 27 (PTI): Pakistan on Monday alleged that “one member” of the BRICS grouping blocked its participation in a virtual meeting held on the sidelines of the bloc’s recent summit hosted by China. The Foreign Office (FO) said Pakistan has noted that this year a highlevel dialogue on global development was held as a side event at the 14th summit of BRICS nations -- Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa. A number of developing/emerging economies were invited to the side event. It said China being the host country engaged with Pakistan before the BRICS meetings, where decisions are taken after consultations with all BRICS members, including extending invitations to non-members. “ Re g r e t t a b ly o n e member blocked Pakistan’s participation,” the FO said. Though the FO did not name any country, it was apparently referring to India, given the history of the relationship between the two nations. The bilateral relations deteriorated after India announced withdrawing the special powers of Jammu and Kashmir and bifurcation of the state into two union territories in August, 2019.

India’s dedication to climate is evident from its performance: Modi in Germany

ELMAU (GERMANY), JUN 27 (PTI): Asserting that India’s dedication to climate commitments is evident from its performance, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday hoped that rich countries of G-7 will support India’s efforts in combating climate change and invited them to tap the huge market for clean energy technologies emerging in the country. In his remarks at the session on ‘Investing in a better Future: Climate, Energy, Health’ at G7 Summit, Modi highlighted India’s track record and said it has achieved the target of 40 per cent energy-capacity from non-fossil sources nine years before time. “The target of 10 per cent ethanol-blending in petrol has been achieved 5 months before time. India has the world’s first fully solar power operated airport. India’s huge railway system will become net zero in this decade,” he said. “When a large country like India shows such ambition, other developing countries also get inspiration. We hope that the rich countries of G-7 will support India’s efforts. Today, a huge market for clean energy technologies is emerging in India,” the prime minister said. field, he said. The scale that India can provide for every new technology can make that technology affordable for the whole world, he asserted. The core theories of the circular economy have been an integral part of Indian culture and lifestyle, Modi said. “I called for a movement called LIFE - Lifestyle for Environment - in Glasgow last year. This year on World Environment Day, we launched the Global Initiative for LiFE campaign. The goal of this campaign is to encourage an eco-friendly lifestyle,” he said. “We can call the followers of this movement Triple-P i.e. ‘pro planet people’, and we should all take the responsibility of increasing the number of Triple-P people in our own countries. This will be our

greatest contribution to the coming generations,” he said. Modi, who is in Germany on a two-day visit from Sunday for the summit of the G7, was received by German Chancellor Olaf Scholz upon his arrival at Schloss Elmau, the picturesque venue of the summit in southern Germany. “Becoming pro-planet people. Investing in a better future. In the @G7 session on climate, energy & health, PM @narendramodi highlighted India’s efforts for green growth, clean energy, sustainable lifestyles & global wellbeing,” Ministry of External Affairs Spokesperson Arindam Bagchi tweeted. Before the start of the summit, Prime Minister Modi shook hands with US President Joe Biden and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau as the leaders assembled for a group photo.

SEOUL, JUN 27 (AP): A top South Korean official said Monday that North Korea is increasingly targeting the South with its nuclear arms programme, and urged China and Russia to persuade the North not to conduct a widely expected nuclear test. Unification Minster Kwon Youngse’s comments came after North Korean leader Kim Jong Un re-emphasised his nuclear ambitions in a key military meeting last week and approved unspecified new operational duties for front-line army units. Experts say North Korea could be planning to deploy battlefield nuclear weapons along its tense border with South Korea. During a prolonged stalemate in nuclear diplomacy, North Korea has spent much of the past three years expanding its arsenal of short-range solid-fuel missiles that are potentially capable of evading missile defences and striking targets throughout South Korea, including US bases there. US and South Korean officials say that North Korea has all but finished preparations for its first nuclear test since September 2017, when it claimed to have detonated a thermonuclear warhead designed for intercontinental ballistic missiles. North Korea may use its next nuclear test to claim that it has acquired the ability to build small nuclear warheads that can be placed on short-range missiles or other new weapons systems it has demonstrated in recent months, analysts say.

G U WA H A T I / N E W DELHI, JUN 27 (PTI): Assam’s flood situation is showing signs of improvement with the water level of most rivers maintaining a receding trend while over 22 lakh remain affected across the state, officials said on Monday. However, the situation in Silchar, headquarter town of Cachar district, remained grim as several areas are still waterlogged, officials said. The toll in the state has increased to 126 after five deaths were reported on Sunday while two others had gone missing. The total number of affected people declined to 22.21 lakh in 28 districts on Sunday while the figure was 25.10 lakh on the previous day, according to a bulletin issued by the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA). The rivers Kopili, Barak and Kushiara are flowing above the danger level. In case of NGOs the consignor must be the district magistrate in whose jurisdiction the dispatching or the receiving station is situated, the spokesperson said.

M’laya struggling in milk production SHILLONG, JUN 27: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma on Monday disclosed that there is a deficit of 50 to 60 percent in the milk production in the State. Speaking at the inauguration of the Milk Collection Centre of the Umlyngka Primary Milk Producer Cooperative Society Ltd. at Umlyngka, Upper Shillong, Sangma called upon local dairy farmers to meet the market demand for milk in the State. The infrastr ucture was funded under the Chief Minister’s Special Rural Development Fund (CMSRDF) and Special Rural Works Programme (SRWP) scheme with a project cost of around Rs. 37 lakhs. The new building

has a chilling unit and testing facilities to maintain quality checks of the milk collected at the centre. Underlining the important role of dairy cooperative societies in making the State self-reliant in milk production, the Chief Minister said that close to 2.5 lakh metric tons of milk is required and more than 50 to 60 per cent is not available which means there is a huge market within the State of Meghalaya itself. Community and Rural Development Minister, HamletsonDohling, said that the Umlyngka Primary Milk Producer Cooperative Society which has been in existence for the past 32 years is a role model for other cooperative societies in the region and its success is a great example and an encouragement for others to take up dairying.

party’s headquarters here, TPCC media in charge Asish Kumar Saha said. In the by-elections to four assembly seats, the BJP won three and the Congress one. The CM is one of the three winning candidates of the saffron party. “The BJP has unleashed terror across the state. The party’s district headquarters in Khowai and a party office in South Tripura’s Belonia subdivision were set on fire on Sunday,” Asish Kumar Saha said. The three AICC members arrived in Agartala on

Monday to assess the situation following the clash. CPI(M) state secretary Jitendra Chowdhury condemned the “attack” on the opposition leaders and workers since the announcement of the byelection. “Our party office was ransacked at North Tripura’s Halflong area. England beat New Zealand to complete clean sweep

LONDON, JUN 27 (AP): A dominant England swept New Zealand 3-0 in the test series with an aggressive seven-wicket victory in the third and final test on Monday.

After the first session was washed out due to rain on the final day, England motored to 296-3 in the middle session after resuming on 183-2. Joe Root (86 not out)

and Jonny Bairstow (71 not out) flayed New Zealand bowlers at Headingley in a blistering 111-run stand as England cruised to the target in just over an hour on the fifth day. B a i r s t o w, w h o s e masterful 162 lifted England from a precarious 55-6 in the first innings, played yet another aggressive knock as he registered England’s second fastest-ever test half century off just 30 balls. Bairstow finished off the game in style when he belted off-spinner Michael Bracewell for a four and a six in a superb 44-ball unbeaten knock. New Zealand had started the day on a high when Tim Southee had Ollie Pope (82) clean bowled in the first over when play resumed after lunch. But Bairstow once again exhibited his powerhitting prowess as he provided the new captain Ben Stokes and new coach Brendon McCullum a perfect start to their new roles. England won the first test by five wickets at Lord’s and then chased down 299 runs at Nottingham for a five-wicket win in the second test.

SPORTS Agarwal added to India squad for England Test MUMBAI, JUN 27 (AGENCIES): Mayank Agarwal has been called up by the Indian team management for the upcoming Test against England at Edgbaston. Captain Rohit Sharma tested positive for COVID-19 and there is a doubt over his availability for the seriesdeciding Test. K L Rahul is also unavailable as he suffered an injury recently, Sportstar report stated. Keeping these constraints in mind, Agarwal was asked by the BCCI to fly out to England on Monday and join the squad. “The All-India Senior Selection Committee has added Mayank Agarwal to India’s Test squad for the rescheduled fifth Test as cover for captain Rohit Sharma, who tested positive for COVID-19. Mayank has left for the UK and will link up with the squad in Birmingham,” a BCCI statement, confirming the development, read. According to the latest government rules, Agarwal won’t have to undergo any quarantine, and will be available to play immediately if required. The 31-year-old featured in a Test match at home against Sri Lanka in March, but could only score 59 runs from two matches.

Sindhu, Prannoy lead India’s challenge at Malaysia KUALA LAMPUR, JUN 27 (PTI): PV Sindhu, will look to recover quickly from her first-round exit at Indonesia, while HS Prannoy will eye another c o n s i s t e n t s h ow. T h e duo will spearhead the Indian challenge, at the Malaysia Open Super 750 tournament starting on Tuesday. Sindhu, a twotime Olympic medallist, was shown the door in the opening round by China’s He Bing Jiao at the Indonesia Open Super 1000 earlier this month. She will look to put that defeat behind her when she begins her campaign against a formidable Por npawee Chochuwong of Thailand. While Sindhu enjoys a 5-3 head-to-head count against Chochuwong, the Indian has lost to the Thai world number 10 three times in their last five meetings, making their clash a mouth-watering prospect. If she can cross the opening hurdle and hit a consistent run, Sindhu might come across Olympic champion Chen Yu Fei of China. L o n d o n O ly m p i c s bronze medallist Saina Nehwal also stars in the same half of the draw and will open against USA’s Iris Wang. A win will put her face-to-face

with Japanese sixth seed Nozomi Okuhara, a former world champion. Saina had skipped the Indonesia leg to manage workload and will look to put up a good show against Wang, whom she had defeated in three games the only time they met last year at Orleans Masters. Chamari denies India clean sweep as SL win final T20I DAMBULLA, JUN 27 (PTI): Skipper Chamari Athapaththu struck a counter-attacking 48-ball 80 as Sri Lanka outplayed India by seven wickets in the third and final T20I to avoid a whitewash here on Monday. The 32-year-old Chamari smashed 14 boundaries and one six and in the process became the only cricketer from the island nation to get to the 2000-run mark in T20Is. Tillakaratne Dilshan (1889) is the highest run-scorer among the male cricketers from Sri Lanka. Chasing a modest 139 to avoid a clean sweep by the Indians, Sri Lankan batting finally came good as the hosts hunt down the target with three overs to spare to claim a consolation win. The three-match T20I series thus ended 2-1 in favour of India, who stuttered after opting to bat before skipper Harmanpreet Kaur’s resilient 39 not out (33b; 3x4, 1x6) propped up their total to 138 for five. In reply, Sri Lanka lost Vishmi Gunaratne (5) in the first over, but Harshitha Samarawickrama (13) gave a fine support to Chamari in the powerplay before being dismissed by Radha Yadav in the fifth over. Thereafter, Nilakshi de K Y M C

Luc k a lso wa s on her side as Chamari got a reprieve on 42 when Jemimah Rodrigues missed a r unning catch in the midwicket boundary. She soon slammed back-to-back fours en route to her fifth T20I fifty. With Chamari looking furious, Sri Lanka just needed 18 runs in the final five overs and the hosts it without much ado to seal their first T20 win against India at home. India were sloppy on the field and missed a slew of run-outs and signed off the T20I series on a disappointing note. Earlier, India stuttered

in the middle overs after Smriti Mandhana (22 from 21b) and Sabbhineni Meghana (22 from 26b) departed in successive overs to leave the visitors reeling at 51 for three. The duo looked well in control in their 41-run second wicket partnership after the talented Shafali Verma (5) fell in the opening over but run-rate dried up as the hosts bounced back aided by some fine fielding. There was a lull in the middle when India failed to get a boundary in 38 deliveries with Harmanpreet and Jemimah Rodrigues struggling to get going. A f t e r Je m i m a h ’s departure, Harmanpreet took charge and along with Pooja Vastrakar scored 49 runs in the final five overs to prop up the total.

All-India snooker: Razmi, Kothari win MUMBAI, JUN 27 (IANS): Double Junior National champion Rayaan Razmi of Maharashtra and West Bengal’s Sourav Ko t h a r i m a d e s t r o n g statements by quickly winning their respective group matches by identical 4-0 margins on the opening day of the National Sports Club of India (NSCI) All India Snooker Open ‘Baulkline’ 2022. The 20-year-old Mumbai-based Razmi, who had won both the billiards and snooker crowns in Bhopal last December, quickly got into a rhythm and struck the ball well, while compatriot Vishal Gehani was unable to settle down and caved in without a fight in their Group-D match played at the NSCI billiards hall on Monday. Razmi immediately got down to business and after taking the first frame, hit breaks of 33, 45 and 37 in the next three frames to complete a 4-0 (70-30, 8512, 79-41, and 81-8) victory. In a Group-E match, the 37-year-old experienced Kothari gave a superb demonstration of excellent shot selection, accurate potting, and shrewd tactical p l ay a g a i n s t 1 9 - ye a r old Digvijay Kadian of Haryana, who was unable to match his senior opponent.

The first half came to an end as Mexico took their slender lead into the dressing room, as India came out with a change -- Sudha Ankita Tirkey replacing Kajal. With less than 10 minutes left on the clock, Shubhangi Singh surged up the pitch to create a decent chance for India, as she passed the ball to Anita, whose cross was a little ahead of Neha, as the latter was robbed of the ball. India head coach Thomas Dennerby threw caution to the wind making a double substitution to bring on Misha Bhandari and Pinku Devi in place of Naketa and Nitu Linda, with just a few minutes left on the clock. H oweve r, M ex i c o soon scored in the third minute of added time through Alice Gallegos to secure the victory.

WIMBLEDON: Djokovic survives scare; enters 2nd round LO N D O N, J U N 2 7 (REUTERS): Top seed Novak Djokovic overcame a dogged challenge from 81st-ranked Korean Kwon Soon-woo and his own grasscourt rustiness to reach the Wimbledon second round with a 6-4, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 victory on Monday. The defending champion, bidding for his fourth Wimbledon title in a row, looked out-of-sorts at times against Kwon, who brought a lively mixture of tennis, from booming forehands to delicate dropshots, onto Centre Court. The 24-year-old Korean broke Djokovic’s serve in the fourth game of the second set and went on to win it with a drop-shot and a big serve. But the 35-year-old Serb, aiming to win a 21st Grand Slam title, recovered enough of his trademark consistency to see off the challenge. Djokovic, who played no grass-court warm-ups before the championships, secured victory with an ace on his first match point and will next meet either Thanasi Kokkinakis or Kamil Majchrzak. Ninth seed Cameron

Norrie made light work of Spain’s Pablo Andujar to give Britain its first win at this year’s Wimbledon, easing through 6-0 ,76(3), 6-3. With the home spotlight very much on Centre Court where fellow Britons Emma Raducanu and Andy Murray were in action later, Norrie opened proceedings on Court Two. Left-hander Norrie, the highest-ranked home player in the men’s draw, dominated the opening set against the 36-year-old who looked uncomfortable on the grass. Anjujar, who had suffered six first-round defeats in his eight previous Wimbledon appearances, broke serve early in the second set but Norrie recovered and moved two sets ahead when he comfortably took a tiebreak. Norrie was gifted a break to love in the third game of the third set and moved to the brink of victory at 3-5 on the Anjujar serve but failed to convert three match points before heavy rain forced the players off court. On the resumption, Norrie completed the job with a backhand pass to move into round two.

1st T20I: India thrash Ireland by 7-wickets DUBLIN, JUN 27 (IANS): O p e n i n g t h e i n n i n g s, Deepak Hooda struck an unbeaten 47 to help India hammer 111 runs in 9.2 overs and romp to a seven wickets win against Ireland in the rain-truncated first T20 International match here. Hardik Pandya had won the toss in Malahide on Sunday but persistent rain delayed the start of play and the game was reduced to 12-overs-per-side when the umpires finally found the conditions fit for play. India came up with a clinical bowling display to restrict hosts Ireland to 108/4 in 12 overs after inviting them to bat first. Hooda, usually a middleorder batter in IPL, struck a 29-ball 47, hitting six boundaries and two sixes, while fellow-opener Ishan Kishan (26) and skipper Pandya (24) made vital contributions as India reached 111/3 in 9.2 overs, winning the match with 16 deliveries to spare. The visitors had handed young tearaway Umran Malik his debut but things did not start well as he gave away 14 runs in the

only over he bowled. But the rest of the bowlers did well, with Bhuvneshwar Kumar (1/16) and Yuzvendra Chahal (1/11) comfortably the pick of the bowlers with their three overs apiece. The Ireland innings was boosted by an outstanding knock by Harry Tector, who reached his half-century in the final over before smashing two further boundaries to finish on 64 not out from just 33 balls. Tector blasted six fours and three sixes during his 50-minute effort. Chasing 109, India

lost Ishan Kishan (26) and Suryakumar Yadav (0) in quick succession as the experienced Craig Young did the damage to reduce the visitors to 30/2. However, India -despite missing a number of star players who are currently in England with the Test squad -- have too much depth and talent to get rattled by the early setback. While Hooda kept going at one end, captain Pandya did not allow the required rate fall with a 12ball 24, blasting three sixes. Though he was trapped

lbw by Josh Little, India -- 94/3 in 7.6 overs -- were already in a comfortable position. Hooda provided the finishing touches by hitting back-to-back fours to bring up the win, remaining unbeaten on 47 off 29 deliveries. Brief scores: Ireland 108/4 in 12 overs (Harry Tector 64 not out; Bhuvneshwar Kumar 1-16, Yuzvendra Chahal 1-11) lost to India 111/3 in 9.2 overs (Deepak Hooda 47 not out, Ishan Kishan 26, Hardik Pandya 24; Craig Young 2-18) by 7 wickets.

Cech steps down as Chelsea’s technical advisor L O N D O N, J U N 2 7 (IANS): Petr Cech will leave his role as Technical and Performance Advisor at Chelsea on June 30, the club confirmed on Monday. Earlier, longserving chairman Bruce Buck and director Marina Granovskaia also departed from the club after the change in leadership at Stamford Bridge. Chelsea was sold last month for 2.5 billion pounds ($3.2 billion) -- the highest price ever paid for a sports team -- to a consortium led by club co-controlling owner Todd Boehly. Since his appointment three years ago, Cech has provided advice and guidance on all football and performance matters throughout the Club, while strengthening the links between our men’s and Academy teams. “It has been a huge privilege to perform this role at Chelsea for the past three years. With the Club under new ownership, I feel now is the right time for me to step aside,” Cech said.

Three Sepaktakraw players from Nagaland, (in blue jerseys, L-R) Sezovelu Dozuo, Akumtila, and Viseyie Koso have been selected for aboard training camp at Bangkok from July 3 to 22 and 5th King’s World Cup at Bangkok from July 23 to 31. F1 continues to push ‘net-zero carbon’

LO N D O N, J U N 2 7 (IANS): Formula 1 has announced an ambitious plan to have a ‘net-zero carbon’ footprint by 2030. Following the successful introduction with new fuel (E10) comprising 10 per cent ethanol, which will reduce carbon emissions overall, F1 is working with all the major fuel manufacturers to develop a 100 per cent sustainable fuel to be introduced with a new engine formula in 2026. “With development of

a 100 per cent sustainable fuel, slashing the use of single-use plastics and reviewing travel and freight logistics - these are just some of the things Formula 1 as a sport is working on as part of its commitment to be ‘net-zero carbon’ by 2030,” Formula One said in a release. This initiative will cover the Formula 1 cars and on-track activity and the rest of the operations during the race. The plan comes after an intense work

with the FIA, sustainability experts, Formula 1 teams, promoters, and partners, resulting in an ambitious, yet achievable delivery plan. Three years ago, as part of a wider sustainability strategy, F1 set ambitious targets and have since been working with the 10 teams, race promoters, partners, suppliers, broadcasters and the FIA to reduce the sport’s carbon footprint. With eight years to go until 2030, F1 is racing towards its target.
