PM Modi ‘names Covid challenge not fully over yet: PM Speaking at an interac& shames’ Oppn tion with chief ministers on states for fuel taxes the emerging COVID-19
Opposition hit back about GST and VAT
In a press statement, Congress spokesperson Pawan Khera pointed out that the Centre did not give GST share to the states. “[Modi] earned Rs 26 lakh crore out of central excise on petrol and diesel. Has he shared it? You didn’t give the GST share to the states on time and then you ask states to further reduce VAT. He should reduce central excise and then ask others to reduce VAT,” Khera said.
Narendra Modi (PTI)
PTI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday said the challenge of the Covid pandemic is not fully over yet, with the increase in coronavirus cases in the last two weeks manifesting the need to stay alert, and underlined that vaccination remains the biggest protective shield against the virus. The Opposition-ruled state governments accused Modi of lying to ‘cover his failures’, treating non-BJP states with a ‘step-mother attitude’ and attempting to deflect criticism targeted at the central government. Telangana: KT Rama Rao, Telangana minister and working president of ruling Telangana Rashtra Samithi, took to Twitter to allege that fuel prices had shot up because of the central government. He wrote, “Name-calling states for not reducing VAT even though we never increased it - is this the cooperative federalism you’re talking about Narendra Modi ji? Telangana hasn’t increased VAT on fuel since 2014 and rounded off only once.” He added, “We don’t get 41 per cent of our rightful share because of the cess imposed by your government. In the form of cess, you are looting 11.4 per cent from the state and we are getting
situation in the country, the prime minister also said the government’s priority is to vaccinate all eligible children at the earliest with special campaigns needed in schools. Asserting that India has fought a long battle against Covid in the spirit of cooperative federalism enshrined in the Constitution, PM lauded the chief ministers, officers and all corona warriors for their efforts. Modi asserted it was clear that the coronavirus challenge is not fully over yet. only 29.6 per cent for FY23. Please scrap cess so we can give petrol at Rs 70 and diesel at Rs 60 all over India. One Nation - One Price?” West Bengal: West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee has said that Modi’s appeal to Opposition states to reduce fuel tax has a ‘political agenda’. Further, she asked the Centre not to ‘burden’ state governments. She said, “I ask you, Modi ji, not to talk about these things in a Covid meeting. He [Modi] is telling us to decrease the tax and he will loot the tax. The PM should not speak like this, he cannot burden states like this. He said states should reduce tax but he hiked the price! This is a one-sided remark which is totally misleading.” She said that the West Bengal government had been giving a subsidy of Re 1 on fuel for three years and lost Rs 1,500 crore as a result, but this was not mentioned by PM Modi.

DIMAPUR, APR 27 (NPN): While other railway stations in the North East are undergoing transformation in the form of more train stoppages, better passenger facilities and modern outlook; Dimapur railway station will only have a face make up and will eventually lose the tag as the second highest revenue earner for the Northeast Frontier Railways (NFR). Dimapur Railway station has only two passenger platforms while smaller and newer stations have several rail lines to accommodate several train stoppages. Even worse is that Platform No 2 in Dimapur has been without a canopy for decades. Only Platform No.1 has a canopy to protect passengers entraining or detraining. Passengers at Dimapur railway station who have to board trains from Platform No.2 are left exposed to the ravages of hot sun, rain or chill. The platform becomes narrower due to goods unloaded at

innovating and scheming to extract money and exploit the business community and consumers by coining different taxation names by various NPGs in the name of taxation as legitimate rights for Naga national movement had become a full-time job, staining and denting the most noble and honourable movement of Naga people. CNCCI noted that, today, the age-old taxes like house tax, ration tax, yearly tax, godown tax, transport tax, item tax etc. could not quench the thirst and greed of many leaders of the Naga National movement. Mentioning that never in their imagination the busi-

It appealed to the authority concerned manning the check gate to issue challans/receipts and display detail chart fee fixed by the government at the counter for transparency. NCD also requested the government and the contractors to complete construction work in respect of public properties in the given allotted time in the interest of public welfare. It further urged upon the government to comprehend the uneven situation faced by government employees due to non-release of salaries and pending bills “at this ongoing crucial adversities”.
TSUD demands thorough probe
Tenyimi Students’ Union Dimapur (TSUD) has demanded that the Dimapur police thoroughly investigate the fuel adulteration taking place in various locations of Dimapur. In a press release, TSUD vice president Sotilo Seb urged the district administration to conduct periodic surprise checking and testing. TSUD expressed dismay that kerosene meant for BPL families was being reportedly diverted for such illegal purposes. TSUD also demanded that the food and civil supplies department clarify the matter in public. The union has also expressed shock over reports that many civil societies and student bodies benefits directly/indirectly from such illegal activities. Appreciating the Rising People’s Party (RPP) for exposing such malpractices, the union assured to extend its unflinching support to fight against such illegal activities. TSUD has, therefore, urged RPP to disclose the names of the organisations and unions involved/supporting in such nefarious activities.

Railway officials informed that the canopy could not be constructed as the width of Platform No 2 was less than 10.6 meters (the required length to have or erect canopies or PP shed in island platforms). The Chief Public Relations Officer (CPRO) of NFR at Maligaon told Nagaland Post that several sanctioned developmental works were ready for execution, such as up gradation of Dimapur Goods area
with yard remodeling for better services to passengers, doubling of LumdingFurkating section etc. Recently, the CPRO told Nagaland Post that proper planning of design and facilities would be undertaken. That was some months back and till date nothing has been seen on the ground. The NFR has been repeating that Dimapur railway station has been identified by the ministry of railways for making it into a world class station. This has been heard since over several decades but the only
transformations that have taken place is the façade of the station and counters. Passengers from Dimapur have to rush to catch trains some of which hardly stop for 5 minutes and the best hardly stop for 10 to 15 minutes. For a train station generating the second highest revenue for NFR, such a situation is nothing short of incredible. Nagaland Post has been reporting on the lack of interest shown in development of Dimapur railway by both the NFR and also the state government. (Cont’d on p-8)

Covid review turns into political blame game NEW DELHI, APR 27 (AGENCIES): A review of the Covid pandemic in the light of a fresh spurt in infections by Prime Minister Narendra Modi turned into a platform for political oneupmanship as Oppositionruled states were targeted for not cutting taxes on petrol and diesel. In his first statement on rising fuel prices in India, Modi took aim at Opposition-ruled states while stating that BJP-rules states like Karnataka and Gujarat reduced Value Added Tax on fuel and passed on the benefits to people, despite the move hurting their treasuries. He added, “However, states like Tamil Nadu, West Bengal, Telangana, Maharashtra, Kerala and Jharkhand did not reduce tax on fuel, and should do it now.” “It has become imperative to increase the coordination between the Centre and the states and uphold the values of cooperative federalism,” Modi said.

GUWAHATI, APR 27 (PTI): Assam Congress MP Abdul Khaleque Wednesday demanded the immediate release of Gujarat MLA Jignesh Mevani and a judicial inquiry into the case filed against him for alleged assault of a woman police officer in Barpeta for which he was rearrested after being granted bail in a case related to a tweet against Prime Minister Narendra Modi. H e s a i d M eva n i ’s arrest was a ‘’full fledged conspiracy” and expressed scepticism over the incident which had reportedly taken place when he was in police custody after being brought to Kokrajhar in Assam from Gujarat for his tweet. ‘’An independent judicial inquiry must be instituted into the fabricated case immediately as the police is not independent in Assam and is acting under political pressure. He should be released immediately,” said Khaleque, who is an MP from Barpeta, where the alleged assault of the woman police officer took place. Rahul predicted Kishor’s refusal on day-1: Sources
NEW DELHI, APR 27 ( AG E N C I E S ) : R a h u l Gandhi had “on Day One” predicted that Prashant Kishor won’t join the Congress and many leaders felt that the strategist wanted to “use the Congress” for leverage with other parties, party sources said today. The doubts and misgivings were mutual, countered sources close to Prashant Kishor. Kishor, or PK, was offered the functional responsibility of election management in the Empowered Congress Committee two days ago. He rejected the offer yesterday. “The offer to PK to join the Congress was made day before yesterday. He said no. We don’t know why,” senior leader P Chidambaram, who was part of a group tasked with reviewing Kishor’s Congress revival plan, told NDTV. PK wanted to be either political secretary to the Congress president or Vice President, sources said.
Rahul Gandhi
Prashant Kishor
“Rahul on Day One itself said PK will not join, this is not the first time he was offered a spot in the party,” said sources. In fact, some suggested it was the eighth time that the strategist had held talks to join the Congress. It was PK who sought out Congress leaders and asked for a meeting to make his presentation on a roadmap to resurrect the grand old party, said the sources. With Rahul appearing cold to his overtures, PK reportedly insisted on meeting with Priyanka Gandhi Vadra.
“Various Cong ress leaders in the committee gave serious thought to his proposals but were wary of PK,” they said. Two Chief Ministers were also asked to hold discussions with him. Many in the group assessing PK’s proposal felt he was not reliable and planned to use the Congress platform while continuing to work with other parties. In order to distance himself from his group I-PAC and tackle questions about whether he would maintain his exclusivity with the Congress, Prashant Kishor said he is “not a
major shareholder of IPAC” and that the group would not do anything that “I tell them not to”. Sources close to Prashant Kishor claim he had deep doubts about how invested the Congress leadership is in tough decisions to revive the party. They said he didn’t feel the Congress and its leadership were invested enough, even though they appeared to support his plans. Rahul Gandhi’s foreign trip at this time reinforced that doubt. Instead of a “hands-on approach”, Rahul Gandhi, one of the top decision-makers of the Congress, appeared “aloof ” and hardly attended any meeting, said sources close to PK. He chose to go on his scheduled trip abroad when he could have deferred it for the party’s moment of reckoning R a hul G a nd hi’s p e r c e ive d d e t a c h m e n t contrasted with Priyanka
Gandhi’s presence in every meeting, but that wasn’t e n o u g h , s a i d s o u r c e s. Sonia Gandhi, the Congress president, was also present throughout the deliberations. Even Priyanka Gandhi was in two minds, given the party’s history with PK in the 2017 Uttar Pradesh election, which it lost. One of the big sticking points in the CongressPK talks was the party’s insistence of incremental changes as opposed to Big Bang reforms that could upset many leaders. Prashant Kishor, says sources, was also not willing to settle for membership of a committee. The ace strategist, who was used to being in direct touch with people like Narendra Modi, Nitish Kumar and Amarinder Singh in the past, wanted direct access to Sonia Gandhi and a free hand to implement his plans for India’s oldest party.
Cong revamps Haryana unit; appoints Gap between 2nd dose and Hooda loyalist Udai Bhan as president precaution dose to be reduced
N E W D E L H I / CHANDIGARH, APR 27 (PTI): The Congress on Wednesday revamped its Haryana unit, appointing former legislator and Bhupinder Singh Hooda loyalist Udai Bhan as chief of its state unit to replace Kumari Selja, and naming four working presidents. As part of the reorganisation of the state unit, which had been on the cards for the past few weeks, the Congress appointed Shruti Choudhary, Ram Kishan Gujjar, Jitender Ku m a r B h a r dwa j a n d Suresh Gupta as working presidents in the state. “The Congress president has accepted the resignation of Kumari Selja from the post of the president, Haryana Pradesh Congress Committee with immediate effect,” an official statement from AICC general secretary K C Venugopal said. “The party appreciates the contribution of Kumari Selja,” the statement also said. Bhan’s appointment
Udai Bhan
has the stamp of former chief minister Hooda whose stronghold on the party will be further strengthened, since he himself is the CLP leader. The power factor continues to be with Hooda, who will enjoy a free hold within the party now. Sixty six-year-old Bhan is the son of former MLA from Hassanpur Gaya Lal and is from the Scheduled Caste community. He has been a four-time former MLA from Hodal and earlier from Hassanpur constituency and has remained with Hooda all along. Bhan has also been chairman of Kribhco (Krishak Bharti Cooperative Limited) from November 1989 to May 1993. Selja told PTI that
she had submitted her resignation to the party high command a few days ago and described herself as a “true soldier of the party”. “I am a true soldier of the Congress party. I have full faith in my high command and we will all work together. My congratulations to the new state unit president and the working presidents,” she said. Hooda, Leader of the Opposition in Haryana, termed Bhan a hard working leader who has worked at the grassroots. “His appointment will further strengthen the Congress,” Hooda told PTI. Refer ring to the appointment of the four working presidents, Hooda said, “All will work together and strengthen the Congress.” While Choudhary is the granddaughter of former chief minister Bansi Lal and has been a former MP from Bhiwani, Ram Kishan Gujjar is a close associate of Selja and Bhardwaj is a Hooda confidante.

NEW DELHI, APR 27 (PTI): The government is likely to soon reduce the gap between the second dose of COVID-19 vaccine and the precaution dose from the current nine months to six months, official sources said on Wednesday. A recommendation on lessening the gap is expected to be made by the National Technical Advisory Group on Immunisation (NTAGI) which is set to hold a meeting on April 29, they told PTI. Studies at ICMR and other international research institutions have suggested that antibody level wanes after about six months from the primary vaccination with both doses and giving a booster increases the immune response. All those above the age of 18 who have completed nine months after the administration of the second dose are eligible for the precaution dose. “Taking into account the scientific evidence and findings of the studies done here and internationally,
the gap between the second dose of COVID-19 vaccine and the precaution dose will most likely be reduced from the current nine months to six months soon. A final decision will be taken based on the recommendations by the NTAGI which is set to meet on Friday,” a source in the know of the developments told PTI. India began administering precaution d o s e s o f va c c i n e s t o healthcare and frontline workers and those aged 60 and above with comorbidities from January 10.

NEW DELHI, APR 27 (PTI): Navy Chief Admiral R Hari Kumar on Wednesday held extensive talks with Commander of the US Indo-Pacific Command, Admiral John Aquilino, focusing on major challenges emanating from China’s increasing assertiveness in the IndoPacific and possible implications of the Ukraine crisis for regional security. Admiral Aquilino is in India to participate in the Raisina Dialogue, India’s premier foreign policy and geo-economics conference. It is learnt that the two commanders carried out a comprehensive review of bilateral naval cooperation and the security challenges in the Indo-Pacific, South China Sea and the Indian Ocean Region. Admiral Kumar and Admiral Aquilino also
delved into the possible implications of the RussianUkraine conflict for the Indo-Pacific region, people familiar with the matter said. In an interactive session at the Raisina Dialogue, Admiral Aquilino said extensively referred to the conflict in Ukraine and said it is time for like-minded countries to prepare with a “sense of urgency” to deal with similar challenges. “We are all concerned about what we watched in Ukraine. We watched u n p r ovo k e d a c t i o n t o generate a war. This is a very concerning time as I look through the lens of global security,” he said. The top American commander also talked about the “no limits” friendship between Russia and China and said it was a matter of great concern.

NEW DELHI, APR 27 (IANS): The government on Wednesday said there is an appropriate amount of coal stocks in the country and there is no need to panic. Coal Minister Pralhad Joshi said: “The country has enough coal stock. The thermal power plants have more than 9 days’ coal stock... the situation is reviewed each day.” He said the coal stocks are sufficient in the country and there is no need to panic. On Monday, Power Minister R.K. Singh and Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw held a meeting here to discuss short-term and long-term strategies for dealing with the situation. Singh had urged all stakeholders at the Central and state level to work hand in hand for unhindered power supply. He urged the power gencos to own freight rakes under the Railways Ministry scheme to deal with logistic constraints in coal supply. Issues discussed included increasing operational efficiency for loading and unloading of coal, increasing percentage of rakes allotment for power sector, and other logistics issues. The Congress has attacked the government on the power crisis, with Rahul Gandhi saying: “India is in the midst of a severe power crisis. In most states, common people are being forced to bear 8-hour power cuts.” He said he had warned the Modi government that lack of coal stocks will spell torment for the country as power demand peaks.

Political arithmetic
fter chief minister Neiphiu Rio divested the crucial portfolio of Roads and Bridges (R&B) from BJP legislature leader and deputy chief minister Y.Patton on April 24, it triggered speculations of something amiss between the chief minister and his deputy chief minister. It may be recalled that the R&B portfolio had been allotted to Tongpang Ozukum, after ministry formation in 2018. The R&B department was later taken away from Ozukum and re-allotted to Patton on July 25,2019. Ozukum was allotted PWD & mechanical in the first rejig by Rio. After divesting the R&B from Patton the portfolio was re-allotted to adviser justice, law and SCERT and veteran politician H.Chuba Chang (who won the byelection from Noksen in 2021). What followed next, only seemed to add to the suspense over the schism between the NDPP and BJP when Patton declined to accept the LRD. Patton’s plea was that his BJP colleague (Paiwang) who held the LRD portfolio was doing a good job and so he did not wish it be divested from him (Paiwang) as he(Patton) was as happy with whatever portfolio allotted by the chief minister. The portfolio swap also involved adviser school education K.T. Sukhalu, who was given the additional department of SCERT (held by Chang). The chief minister explained to media persons that the swap where Patton. Later, seeking to dispel speculations that the swap affecting NDPP and BJP alliance partners was done at some state level, the chief minister told media persons that it was effected only after consultations with central BJP leaders. Had some ordinary and less lucrative portfolio been taken away, it would have had made less news or hardly created much sensation. The portfolio swap is believed to be the outcome of a tussle within the erstwhile Progressive Democratic Alliance (PDA) between NDPP and BJP when the NPF was in the opposition. To put and end to the never ending political intrigues of BJP and NPF allegedly trying to strike a deal to form an alternative coalition (NPF had 26 and BJP 12), perhaps both Rio and T.R. Zeliang decided to walk the talk when the NPF joined the PDA on August 2021 to form the second all-party government later renamed as United Democratic Alliance (UDA). Even with the BJP, there has been an ongoing tussle between deputy chief minister Y. Patton and state BJP president and minister H&TE Temjen Imnalong over the hotly contested chair of state BJP president. Sources within the UDA disclosed to this newspaper, that the swap was precipitated when Patton reportedly wanted the central BJP leaders to effect the principle of ‘One Man, One Post’. This would certainly mean that Temjen Imnalong would have to choose either to remain as party president or minister. This is not something new in the state BJP as district units in the past, have been divided over the issue. The portfolio swap seems like a signal of what could be politically permutated since the state goes to the polls either by end of February or first week of March 2023. Interestingly and as reported first in Nagaland Post, both NDPP and BJP have reaffirmed their commitment to continue with their pre-poll seat sharing arrangement on a 40 (NDPP): 20 (BJP) in 2023. Since NPF is also part of the government alliance (UDA), it appears the seat sharing will certainly be another conflict point, which suggest that political intrigue will continue till end of 2022.
DailyDevotion What Do You Want? Do you seek great things for yourself? —Jeremiah 45:5 Are you seeking great things for yourself, instead of seeking to be a great person? God wants you to be in a much closer relationship with Himself than simply receiving His gifts— He wants you to get to know Him. Even some large thing we want is only incidental; it comes and it goes. But God never gives us anything incidental. There is nothing easier than getting into the right relationship with God, unless it is not God you seek, but only what He can give you. If you have only come as far as asking God for things, you have never come to the point of understanding the least bit of what surrender really means. You have become a Christian based on your own terms. You protest, saying, “I asked God for the Holy Spirit, but He didn’t give me the rest and the peace I expected.” And instantly God puts His finger on the reason– you are not seeking the Lord at all; you are seeking something for yourself. Jesus said, “Ask, and it will be given to you…” (Matthew 7:7). Ask God for what you want and do not be concerned about asking for the wrong thing, because as you draw ever closer to Him, you will cease asking for things altogether. “Your Father knows the things you have need of before you ask Him” (Matthew 6:8). Then why should you ask? So that you may get to know Him. Are you seeking great things for yourself? Have you said, “Oh, Lord, completely fill me with your Holy Spirit”? If God does not, it is because you are not totally surrendered to Him; there is something you still refuse to do. Are you prepared to ask yourself what it is you want from God and why you want it? God always ignores your present level of completeness in favor of your ultimate future completeness. He is not concerned about making you blessed and happy right now, but He’s continually working out His ultimate perfection for you— “…that they may be one just as We are one…” (John 17:22).

INDIAN IT INDUSTRY ATTRACTS MORE WOMEN BUT MANY EXIT WITHIN FIRST 5 YEARS
omen’s participation in IT is higher both in comparison to other sectors in the country, and in comparison, to representation in the sector in other countries. The increase in numbers of women in engineering education and the mushrooming of several private engineering colleges since the 1990s catered to a growth in demand for engineers in the IT industry. IT–BPM is the largest private sector employer— delivering 3.7 million jobs; this industry is contributing about 7.9 per cent of GDP at present— compared to 1.2 per cent in 1999–2000 (IT & ITES 2005–2006, 2018). There has been some slowdown in terms of hiring—the industry added 230,000 jobs in 2011–2012 (Gupta 2015) and 105,000 in 2017–2018 (IT & ITES 2018). However, private equity/venture capital in IT services has grown at the CAGR of 27.25 per cent in financial year 2017–2018 (IT & ITES 2018). Further, while the economy grew in terms of GDP from 6.4 per cent in 2013 to 6.9 per cent in 2017, the revenues from IT–BPO (now IT–BPM)4 industry have grown much faster at CAGR of 9.5 per cent between 2013 and 2018 according to the World Bank statistics. Women constituted 21 per cent of the total IT workforce in 2001 (NASSCOM 2001), increasing to about 30 per cent in 2012 (NASSCOM 2013, cited in Gupta 2015); 28% according to Sudha 2012). At present, for FY 2017–2018, the IT and ITES sector employs 34 per cent women according to Ministry of Electronics & Information Technology.6 This is higher than the 20.5 per cent average level of female participation in the formal economy in 2011,
D
for which statistics are available (OGD 2012–2015) and higher than either in public or private sector separately. The women’s participation in the organized public sector is lower at 18.07 per cent than in the organized private sector at 24.3 per cent (OGD 2012–2015). Women’s participation in IT workforce is second highest among all non-agricultural sectors in the country after e-commerce (67.7%) and retail (52%; NASSCOM 2018; Raghuram et al. 2017). This participation in IT is also higher in comparison to the participation in the sector in other countries. For instance, in 2014, women held about one-fourth of all computing occupations in the USA, although they make up more than half of the US workforce (Women’s Bureau 2015). The percentage of computing occupations held by women has been declining in the USA since 1991, when it reached a high of 36 per cent (Ashcraft, McLain and Eger 2016). The growth of women in the IT sector is aided by the fact that computers enjoy a woman-friendly image and fit into the overall gendered sociocultural context. As mentioned earlier, specialization in computers is suitable for women (Parikh and Sukhatme 2004); the jobs associated with computers are considered ‘safe’ for women (Varma 2010) and offer a career in software which commands the highest social approval (Bagchi 1999). A woman being skilled in computers is not regarded as abnormal, which is also reflected through cinema. According to Pal (2010: 7), in the South Indian films, ‘we see a burst of female software engineers on screen’ including films with a reversal of roles, with the female lead being an accomplished tech-
on’t let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith and in purity. (1Timothy 4:12). The world observed International Youth Day recently. Indeed, everyday is a day to commemorate the birth, death or some anniversary or the other of practically every culture, religion and nation in the world thus filling up all the days of the year. That is fine and encouraging. A Russian proverb says, “Every day is a messenger of God.” The day of commemoration comes and goes but its essence and value should be enhanced continuously. Grand gestures on significant occasions mark the passage of time. But little gestures that sweeten the moment stop time, allowing us to pause to express or receive love and encouragement. In that spirit herewith is the focus on youth which is the period of life coming between childhood and maturity, the early stage of growth or existence. The Transition Youth means not only young age. It means the green years, the tender years, the bloom yet innocent years of one’s life. Youth is a term that embraces us from the cradle to childhood, the teens, adolescence and young manhood/ womanhood and sometimes to young old manhood/womanhood. Middle age is the time of life between youth and old age; now usually applied to the years from a 40 to 60. Yet if we get to be quite old, we become youthful again. By the time youngsters are in college they more or less have an idea or decided which profession to pursue and their eventual outcome would depend on their zeal and enthusiasm. In the process, a number fall by the wayside, or simply give up while others plod on till they achieve a measure of success while not a few do achieve victorious goals to the Ph.D levels and beyond. It all depends on their teachers in the primary to higher secondary levels and then the lecturers (better defined now
nologist and the male lead as professionally subservient. The sociocultural context of the fillip in women’s participation is supported by organizational context of the IT professions. The IT sector offers white-collar jobs with comparatively high salary, easy international mobility, gender-neutral policy based on knowledge-centric skills’ possession, flexible work routine and physically less demanding work process in comfortable indoor work environment (Kumar 2001; Shanker 2008; Upadhya 2006). Some other factors that have led to this trend include transportation, parental leave, anti-harassment, health care and an emphasis on recognizing and supporting women’s needs (especially mothers; Raghuram et al. 2017). In 2012, only 22 per cent of the companies had more than 20 per cent women at senior level; by 2015, the number of such firms had increased to 33 per cent (Raghuram et al. 2017). The number of companies achieving 30 per cent at the C-Suite level has been increasing at 2 per cent a year from 2012 (NASSCOM 2018). Around 2006, the Indian infotech industry then faced with talent shortage launched initiatives to attract more women into the workforce. IT industry, a relatively new industry (about 30 years old at present), was unencumbered by a traditional masculine culture. It has been the first to recognize the significance of diversity and inclusion (D&I) of which gender has been a major component. It is seen as business imperative, particularly since they operate in a highly competitive environment and talent acquisition and its retention is important; diversity is seen as key to innovation (Buddhapriya
2013). Wipro Technologies launched its Women of Wipro (WoW) initiative, as part of the Wipro Diversity Council, in 2008. The objectives of WoW are to reduce the attrition of women employees, facilitate increased numbers of women managers at a senior level and develop Wipro as an equal opportunity employer with world-class practices to nurture women employees. Infosys has several programmes for gender diversity. It won the first NASSCOM-India Today Award for Gender Inclusivity in 2007 and American society for training and development award in 2009 (Buddhapriya 2013). Meenu Bhambhani, head of corporate social responsibility with Mphasis, now a HewlettPackard unit (Duttagupta 2010), says: The Indian IT industry is definitely ahead on the issue of respecting diversity and goes much beyond lip-service or tokenism. Diversity policies focus not only on granting certain entitlements but also on creating support systems that lead to a level-playing field. Diversity has been recognized as a good business proposition as well. NASSCOM points out that corporations with at least 10 per cent women on company boards have 2.5–5 per cent higher returns on equity, firms where women are at least 30 per cent of C-Suite have 15 per cent higher profitability than others (Raghuram et al. 2017). However, the IT sector exhibits a mixed picture in terms of a gendered environment. The gender diversity initiatives of the firms helped to enhance the representation of women in the workforce. By 2011, HCL, Wipro and Infosys had about one-fourth to one-third women workforce, but few in leadership positions. At
Infosys, for instance, only 4.8 per cent were at senior management level (Buddhapriya 2013). At present, although representation of women in the IT workforce is roughly commensurate with percentage representation enrolled in bachelors in engineering (about 28%), it is less than those enrolled in bachelors in computer-related branches (COE, IT, ECE, computer applications) where women’s representation is about 40 per cent (as in Chapter 2). This suggests attrition and/or change of sector of employment. As per one source, percentage of women engineers unemployed is as high as 40 per cent. Although there is unemployment among men engineers also, experts believe that more women than men engineers are unemployed (Parikh and Sukhatme 2004). Further, there is gender pay gap at all levels, lowest for 3–5 years’ experience level and highest for 6–10 years of experience, as reported by Monster Salary Index (Monster India 2016: 17–26). Also, there is vertical and horizontal segregation. An analysis indicates that over 51 per cent of entrylevel recruits are women; over 25 per cent of women are in managerial positions but <1 per cent are in the top level/C-Suite (Raghuram et al. 2017). Thus, there is stagnation at entry and middle-career levels and the gender gap widens over the years significantly. Among the companies surveyed, 88.5 per cent reported that less than 10 per cent of their C-Suite is female and 80 per cent companies had less than 20 per cent at the senior management levels (NASSCOM 2018). As per the same source, more than 50 per cent companies have stagnated at the same level
Forever and ever the Youth
as assistant professors). Parents play a crucial role in upbringing of the children. Values like obedience, honesty, courtesy and willingness to participate in making an amiable family atmosphere are inculcated first in the home. A role model to emulate is also important and so we need many more in our society. It is then the majority of our youth will be able to contribute whatever they are capable of for peace, development and prosperity. There are many avenues of earning a livelihood without necessarily aiming for a post in Govt. of Nagaland service which in any case is over-saturated. Our Naga society in general has great traditional and cultural heritage making for a proud historical saga. Presently, there are, of course, certain hindrances/ obstacles facing a majority of our youth. These include financial constraints, poor rural connectivity, various isms and a certain lack of civic sense. Nevertheless, these can be overcome if our youth are determined to succeed. The key is to persevere by holding on to enthusiasm and never to be discouraged after any failure for one can try again and again and again until the goal is scored. Even then, in spite of much experience, ultimate knowledge of anything is infinite for there seems no end to it. So the youth must keep in mind what English poet (1731–1800) wrote: “Knowledge is proud it has learnt so much; Wisdom is humble it knows no more.” Also, to paraphrase John F. Kennedy’s presidential inaugural speech on January 20, 1961, “Ask not what your country can do for you; ask what you can do for your country.” Call to The World’s Youth Half a century ago, what UK’s then Cabinet Minister in charge of Environment, 40-year old Rt. Hon. Peter Walker, MBE, said in a speech to the World Assembly of Youth in August, 1972 holds relevance even today. Herewith is an excerpt: “The challenges before you, the new generation, are clear. No matter what your political af-
filiations, no matter from which nations of the world you come, there must be three objectives which dominate your minds. “The first, to free the world from poverty and squalor. The second, to provide mankind with a quality of environment both at home and at work that makes living a full and rich experience for each individual. The third, to free the world from racial discriminations and prejudice. “Attainment of these objectives will be difficult. The gap between rich and poor nations is widening, not closing. The spirit of nationalism is adding to racial prejudice, not diminishing it. And there are those of the younger generation in politics who consider that the search for self-fulfilment means the freedom to do your own thing and to hell with anyone else. “The role of the young traditionally, has been to stand on the touchlines, criticizing the older generation who are playing the game and making all the decisions. Today, for the first time in history, the twenties to thirties are better educated than the fifties to sixties. “From now on, the new and educated young must be on the field of play, participate in the decisiontaking and facing challenges that can only be met by a generation freed from past dogmas……We are entering a period when the clash of ideologies should be replaced by unity in wishing to attain the same objectives; when the true reformer is the man of action. “Thus my plea to you is a plea for practical wisdom. You have the advantages of the means of communication, both verbal and physical, never previously available. You have the skill at science and technology that can change bad conditions into good with a speed never previously considered. Also, you are able, like older generations, to learn from the mistakes of the past and inherit the good that has been created. “The world’s judgement upon your success or failure will be made at the end of the century. You have 30 years in which you will either
fail to the permanent detriment of humanity or succeed to an extent greater than any previous generation.” Yours truly is of the generation to which the speech was addressed. Since then, many things have happened on practically all fronts the world over, the latest being over two years of Covid 19 and its mutations pandemic and the ever growing voice for addressing climate change and biodiversity loss (the Russia-Ukraine conflict notwithstanding). On her two-day visit to India from Sunday April 24 European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said youngsters are the advocates to fight climate change, save the planet and develop solutions by raising their voice for climate change by advocating greener policies. So forth and so on. Be that as it may, on a youthful note, reproduced here are an American’s thoughts on youth which have inspired some of the world’s most successful businessmen. Newspaper columnist Margaret Mason reprinted a short essay on youth by Samuel Ullman started a chain of delightful events. She got a call from Ullman’s great-grandson, Richard Ullman Rosenfield, a psychologist. He told her that he had been intrigued with the “spiritual journey” of the essay especially in Japan. In an article titled “Words That Won Japan” in Readers Digest condensed from the “Washington Post” of Sept. 17, 1990, she wrote that this essay written sometime about 1910s had much to do with Japanese productivity and the basis of many businessmen’s life philosophy. “Many carried tattered copies in their wallets.” Among many positive comments on this essay, a lasting one is by Kokichi Hagiwara, former Japanese chairman of National Steel in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania: “It touches me at the core of my heart. This kind of enthusiasm is indispensible. We must have the spirit of youth to make change.” General Douglas MacArthur, who led U.S. forces in the Second
of women in senior management (4%) in 2017 as in 2012. In 2006, women constituted 26 per cent of the professionals in the technical segments of the IT industry, which employ a large number of engineers. However, the ratio of males to females is reversed (i.e., 31: 69) in the BPO sector (Gupta 2015), which is mainly a nontechnical segment of the IT industry. This is affirmed by a recent survey which found 26 per cent women in engineering roles; that 45 per cent women move out of core engineering jobs after 8 years of experience to marketing, product management or consulting; that more women are in software testing jobs (34:66 as men–women ratio) which are less sought after than hard-core programming roles (men–women ratio at 75:25). This indicates that a growth in numbers of technically trained women does not imply a consecutive decline in gender segregation in the labour market. There are further evidences of gender inequalities in the profession. A survey found that the years of work experience are almost exactly the same for male and female employees at the different career levels (Raghuram et al. 2017). However, while men and women start their careers in IT companies in India at similar ages, men at senior positions are often younger than women at a similar level. This indicates that women with career breaks or part-time work take longer to move up. Majority of women working in the industry are aged 30 years or below and are usually single (Raghuram et al. 2017). A large proportion of women tend to exit from the industry after the first five years of employment. Namrata Gupta (As published in The Print)
World War, kept a framed copy over his desk often quoted from it throughout the Pacific campaign. Apparently the Japanese picked up the work from his Tokyo headquarters. Some Japanese leaders have considered this essay as a bridge between two cultures. If Westerners can understand Japanese reverence for it’ maybe they can better understand the Japanese quest for spiritual sustenance in the midst of material abundance. Japanese royalties on a book of Samuel Ullman and cassette reading of his work has gone to a University of Alabama scholarship fund. Ullman wrote his essay when he had crossed 70 years old! Essay on Youth “Youth is not a time of life; it is a state of the mind; it is not a matter of rosy cheeks, red lips and supple knees; it is a matter of the will, a quality of the imagination, a vigour of the emotions; it is the freshness of the deep springs of life. “Youth means a temperamental predominance of courage over the timidity of appetite, for adventure over the love of ease. This often exists in a man of 60 more than a boy of 20. Nobody grows old by a number of years. We grow old by deserting our ideals. “Years may wrinkle the skin, but to give up enthusiasm wrinkles the soul. Worry, fear, self-distrust bows the heart and turns the spirit back to dust. “Whether 60 or 16, there is in every human being’s heart the lure of wonder, the unfailing childlike appetite of what’s next and the joy of the game of living. In the centre of your heart and my heart there is a wireless station: so long as it receives messages of beauty, hope, cheer, courage from men and from the infinite, so long are you young. “When the snows are down, and your spirit is covered with snows of cynicism and the ice of pessimism, then you are grown old at 20, but so long as your aerials are up, to catch waves of optimism, there is hope you may be young at 80.” Jack T. NEW DELHI, APR 27 (PTI): The best way to deal with the conflict in Ukraine would be to focus on “stopping the fighting and getting the talking” to move forward and India’s position on the crisis is best placed to advance such an approach, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar said on Wednesday. His comments came in response to a question at an interactive session at the Raisina Dialogue, India’s premier foreign policy and geo-economics conference. Jaishankar on Tuesday countered criticism of India’s position on Russia’s actions in Ukraine, saying the Western powers have been oblivious to the pressing challenges in Asia including last year’s developments in Afghanistan. “We spent a lot of time yesterday on Ukraine and I have tried to explain what our views are but also explained that in our minds the best way forward is to focus on stopping the fighting, getting the talking and finding

ways of moving forward. We think our choices, our positions are best placed to advance that,” he said. India has not yet publicly condemned the Russian attack on Ukraine and has been calling for the resolution of the conflict through dialogue and diplomacy. In his address, Jaishankar talked about India’s 75-year-long journey after Independence and highlighted how the country played a key role in promoting democracy in South Asia. Reflecting on areas where India came up short,
the external affairs minister listed a lack of adequate attention to human resources and manufacturing and mentioned that probably not much attention was given to hard security as part of foreign policy. Asked about what should be the priority for the country in the next 25 years, Jaishankar said capability development in all possible areas should be the central focus. “We have to be confident about who we are. I think it is better to engage the world on the basis of who
we are...This idea that others define us, somehow we need to get the approval of other quarters, I think that is an era we need to put behind us,” Jaishankar said. He hoped that India will be “deeply more international” in terms of its commitments, responsibilities and roles in the next 25 years. “We should not be looking at the world with a sense of entitlement. We need to earn our place in the world and which to a certain extent, therefore, comes to the issue of how the world benefits from the growth of India. We need to demonstrate that “ he said. The external affairs minister was asked what India expects from the world. “There is a lot of talk about reliable and resilient supply chains and people speak about transparency and trusted technologies. If India could do more and show the rest of the world that the world benefits by India being bigger,” Jaishankar said.
“So we need to develop stakes in our future whether the rest of the world is concerned. I think some of that is happening for strategic reasons obviously, but we need to make more of it happen especially for economic reasons,” he added. Showcasing India’s 75-year-long successful democratic journey, Jaishankar said the choices made by India have had a larger influence globally. “There was a time in this part of the world that we were pretty much the only democracy. If democracy is global today, we see it is global today, I think, in some measure, that credit is due to India,” Jaishankar said. He noted that it is also fair to look back on where the country came up short. “One, clearly we did not pay the kind of attention to our social indicators, our human resources as we should have. Two, we did not concentrate on manufacturing and technology strengths as we should have. And three, in terms of

Speaking in the Tamil Nadu Assembly on the incident, Health Minister Ma Subramanian said a major tragedy was averted by the presence of mind of doctors, staff and the prompt action by the fire and police personnel in extinguishing the flames and rescuing the patients. The Minister thanked all those who helped in shifting the patients to safety. “The fire and rescue service personnel battled with the flames for nearly three hours by initially pressing four fire tenders into service,” he said. “Electrical failure (short circuit) is the suspected cause of the blaze. The Intensive Care Unit and other wards are on the same floor where fire broke out. Soon after information was received fire tenders reached the spot. All the patients who were on that floor were shifted safely to other wards,” the Health Minister told reporters.

Union government has earned Rs 26 lakh crore in last eight years - where has all this gone? The PM is trying to deflect the criticism against him,” he added. Maharashtra: Maharashtra chief minister Uddhav Thackeray said that the state government cannot be held responsible for the spike in fuel prices. He said, “Today, in the price of one litre of diesel in Mumbai, Rs 24.38 is for the Centre and Rs 22.37 is for the state. In petrol price, 31.58 paise is central tax and 32.55 paise state tax. Therefore, it is not a fact that petrol and diesel have become more expensive due to the state.” Additionally, Uddhav Thackeray said that his government had already given citizens tax relief on natural gas.

performance of a state or country was often measured in terms of the quality of IT services and electronic transactions and through the cooperation extended by all sections of society. Vizo said that electronic transaction of Nagaland was next to Assam in the North Eastern Region, which he described as “very significant” because the geographical size and population of Assam was very much higher than Nagaland. During the pandemic, Vizo said telecom services have become extremely important and good quality of Telecom services comes only through good connectivity. In Nagaland, he said that due to difficult terrain, inclement weather conditions and other factors, it
was a big challenge to lay underground optical fibre. Therefore, he said the state was slowly moving towards Aerial Optical Fibre connectivity and wireless connections. However, Vizo said that some Telecom operators were still going ahead with underground optical fibre cable laying that required RoW permission. To f a c i l i t a t e g i v ing quick permission, he said Nagaland has already brought a comprehensive RoW policy in December 2019 and today a portal has also been set up to speed up giving RoW permission. Representatives from e-services providing departments also delivered speech at the launching programme. A host of officials from different departments attended the event.

Myanmar court sentences Suu Kyi to 5 years for corruption BANGKOK, APR 27 (AP): A court in military-ruled Myanmar convicted the country’s former leader Aung San Suu Kyi of corruption and sentenced her to five years in prison Wednesday in the first of several corruption cases against her. Suu Kyi, who was ousted by an army takeover last year, had denied the allegation that she had accepted gold and hundreds of thousands of dollars given her as a bribe by a top political colleague. Her supporters and independent legal experts consider her prosecution an unjust move to discredit Suu Kyi and legitimise the military’s seizure of power while keeping the 76-yearold elected leader from returning to an active role in politics. She has already been sentenced to six years imprisonment in other cases and faces 10 more corruption charges. The maximum punishment under the AntiCorruption Act is 15 years in prison and a fine. Convictions in the other cases could bring sentences of more than 100 years in prison in total for a Nobel Peace Prize laureate who already spent years in detention for defying military rule. The takeover was met with large nonviolent protests nationwide, which
security forces quashed with lethal force that has so far led to the deaths of almost 1,800 civilians, according to a watchdog group, the Assistance Association for Political Prisoners. As repression escalated, armed resistance against the military government grew, and some UN experts now characterize the country as being in a state of civil war. Suu Kyi has not been seen or allowed to speak in public since she was detained and is being held in an undisclosed location. However, at last week’s final hearing in the case, she appeared to be in good health and asked her supporters to “stay united,” said a legal official familiar with the proceedings who asked not to be named because he is not authorised to release information.
President Rajapaksa is coming under pressure to set up an interim administration as an immediate step to resolve the economic and political turmoil in the country. Mass anti-government protests demanding the resignation of the entire Rajapaksa family have been going on for more than two weeks. The public is being made to wait in long lines for fuel and cooking gas amid power cuts. In recent weeks, prominent businesses and other professional organisations have repeated the call for an interim government. A senior Buddhist monk claimed on Monday that President Rajapaksa had agreed to form an interim government to tackle the unprecedented economic crisis.
KARACHI, APR 27 (IANS): Tuesday’s suicide attack in Karachi University targeting Chinese nationals, carried out by a female suicide bomber, a first by the Majeed Brigade of Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA), has raised serious concerns over the use of women to carry out terror strikes. Three Chinese nationals and a Pakistani citizen were killed after what appeared to be a targeted suicide bombing outside the University of Karachi’s Confucius Institute on Tuesday afternoon. Many believe that such female suicide bombers, who have been previously used for carrying out ‘fidayeen’ attacks by other terrorist organisations, come from a oppressed background with lesser exposure, making them vulnerable to the motivational sermons of terror groups.
Shari Baloch with her children.
While it may be true to some extent, BLA’s first suicide bomber changed the overall outlook to the theory as Shari Baloch, who carried out the attack on Tuesday, was neither illiterate, nor did she come from a family background having connections with separatist groups. Russia cuts off Poland and Bulgaria from its gas POKROVSK (UKRAINE), APR 27 (AP): Russia opened a new front in its war in Ukraine on Wednesday, cutting NATO members Poland and Bulgaria off from its gas, a dramatic escalation in the conflict that is increasingly becoming a wider battle with the West. One day after the United States and other Western allies vowed to speed more and better military supplies to Ukraine, the Kremlin upped the ante, using its most essential export as leverage. It then went even further, saying Russia could halt gas supplies to other European customers. European gas prices shot up on the news that
Poland and Bulgaria were cut off, a move that European leaders denounced as “blackmail.” In a memo, state-controlled Russian giant Gazprom said it was cutting Poland and Bulgaria off from its natural gas because they refused to pay in Russian rubles, as President Vladimir Putin had demanded. The company said it had not received any such payment since the beginning of the month. The gas cuts do not immediately put the countries into dire trouble since they have worked on getting alternative sources for several years now and the continent is heading into
summer, making gas not as essential for households. Still, it sent shivers of worry through the 27-nation European Union, which immediately convened a special coordination group to limit the impact of the move. And Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov’s ensuing warning was sure to worry them even more. He told reporters that other European customers may be cut off if they also refuse to pay in rubles. On the ground too, the geopolitical fight intensified, with the Russian military claiming Wednesday that its missiles hit a batch of weapons that the U.S. and European nations

leadership. Both the President and the Prime Minister are under mounting pressure from fierce public protests demanding his resignation for mishandling the country’s worst economic crisis. Debt-ridden Sri Lanka is grappling with an unprecedented economic turmoil since its independence from Britain in 1948. The crisis is caused in part by a lack of foreign currency, which has meant that the country cannot afford to pay for imports of staple foods and fuel, leading to acute shortages and very high prices. Sri Lankan election commission on Tuesday urged all political parties to come together to form an all-party government or a similar body to end the political impasse prevailing in the country.

COLOMBO, APR 27 (PTI): Sri Lanka’s embattled President Gotabaya Rajapaksa on Wednesday convened a meeting of political parties on April 29 to discuss the possible formation of an all-party government to end the protracted political impasse in the country, amidst mounting pressure on Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa to resign to and make way for an interim government. A letter to all party leaders in the ruling coalition said the government was in agreement to form an all-party government comprising parties represented in Parliament, according to a statement. The meeting has been fixed for April 29 to discuss the new arrangement after the resignation of prime minister Mahida Rajapaksa, it said.

Health risks of chronic heavy drinking
Alcohol and Health Risks Heavy alcohol consumption can cause many health problems. Alcohol consumption can cause numerous diseases. Many people know that heavy drinking can lead to cirrhosis of the liver and is a leading cause of automobile accidents. But did you know chronic drinking can also lead to cancer and heart attack? Read on to find out consequences of heavy drinking. 1. Anemia Heavy alcohol drinking can cause abnormally low red blood cell levels, known as anemia. Excessive alcohol use can affect the hematologic system, which is made up of the blood, spleen, bone marrow, and the liver. It can cause your red blood cell count to be abnormally low, which is a condition called anemia. Symptoms of anemia include fatigue, shortness of breath, and lightheadedness. 2. Cancer Chronic alcohol drinking can increase your risk for developing cancer. Chronic alcohol drinking can increase your risk for developing cancer. The body converts the alcohol you drink into acetaldehyde, which is a known carcinogen (substance that causes cancer). Cancers often found in heavy drinkers include those of the mouth, pharynx (throat), larynx (voice box), esophagus, liver, breast, and colorectal region. Many heavy drinkers also smoke, which further increases cancer risk. 3. Cardiovascular Disease Heavy drinking and binge drinking
can cause heart disease or stroke. Heavy drinking and binge drinking can cause heart disease or stroke. It can raise the levels of fats in the blood (triglycerides), lead to high blood pressure, and stroke. It can also cause cardiomyopathy (weakening of the heart muscle), and the heart-rhythm abnormalities atrial and ventricular fibrillation. 4. Cirrhosis Alcohol causes inflammation of the liver, and chronic drinking can cause scarring of liver tissue that leads to cirrhosis, a potentially fatal condition in which the liver is so scarred it can no longer function. Alcohol causes inflammation of the liver, and chronic drinking can cause scarring of liver tissue that leads to cirrhosis, a potentially fatal condition in which the liver is so scarred it can no longer function. The risk increases the longer you have been drinking. Not all heavy drinkers will develop cirrhosis, though it seems to run in families, and women get it more often than men.

It can be very painful. Alcohol intake may increase the risk of developing gout, particularly in men, and beer seems to cause the condition more than other types of alcohol. If you already have gout, drinking alcohol may worsen your symptoms. 9. High Blood Pressure Heavy drinking can cause high blood pressure. Alcohol can cause high blood pressure (hypertension). The more alcohol a person drinks, the greater their risk for developing high blood pressure. Hypertension can become chronic, and can lead to other medical conditions including heart disease, stroke, and kidney disease. 10. Infectious Diseases Heavy alcohol drinking can suppress the immune system, leading to a variety of infectious diseases. Excessive alcohol use can weaken the immune system, and make it easier for you to get infections. Chronic drinkers are more likely to contract diseases such as tuberculosis, pneumonia, HIV/ AIDS, and sexually transmitted diseases (STDs). STDs are a concern because heavy drinkers are also more likely to engage in risky sexual behaviors. Even binge drinking on one day can affect your body’s ability to fight off infection for up to 24 hours. Melissa Conrad Stöppler, MD

ollywood actor Ajay Devgn, who is gearing up for the release of his film ‘Runway 34’, publicly replied to Kannada superstar Kiccha Sudeep’s opinion on Hindi not being the national language of India, on Wednesday. The, ‘Singham’ actor took to his Twitter and tagged Sudeep as he tweeted, “Brother, if Hindi is not our national language according to you, then why do you release films made in your mother tongue dubbed in Hindi? Hindi is our mother tongue, and our national language, and it will always be. Jana Gana Mana.” Sudeep had earlier made a comment at the film launch of ‘R: The Deadliest Gangster Ever’. When probed about a Kannada film becoming
a pan-Indian hit, Sudeep told media, “You said that a pan India film was made in Kannada. I’d like to make a small correction. Hindi is no more a national language. They (Bollywood) are doing pan-India films today. They are struggling (to find success) by dubbing in Telugu and Tamil, but it’s not happening. Today, we are making films that are going everywhere.” Incidentally, Ajay was recently seen in a cameo appearance in superstar director S.S. World No.1 Iga Swiatek Pull out of the IPL: Shastri to Kohli withdraws from Madrid Open
MADRID, APR 27 (IANS): World No.1 Iga Swiatek has withdrawn from the Madrid Open 2022 on Wednesday, citing a right shoulder injury. “We just thought that this is the best decision for me to recover properly because I didn’t really have time to recover after all these tournaments. After each of them I had like two days to chill out and then I had to come back to work and adjust to so many different things in every place Basically, it’s not like we have some drama because everything is okay,” Swiatek told reporters. “You can see in Stuttgart that basically I’m doing fine. So basically, right now I feel like this is the best decision for us to get ready for Rome and have the peak of my form in Roland Garros,” she added. The 20-year-old Polish star is riding a 23-match win streak after winning her fourth consecutive title at the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix. The win on indoor clay came after becoming the first player to win the

first three WTA 1000 events of the season at the Qatar Total Open, BNP Paribas Open, and Miami Open. By winning Indian Wells and Miami back-to-back in March, Swiatek became the fourth and youngest woman to win the Sunshine Double. Set to play as the top seed in Madrid, Swiatek was due to open her tournament on Friday against a qualifier. The next player to be seeded, Leylah Fernandez, will move to Swiatek’s place at the top of the draw. “I wanted to play it really badly, honestly,” Swiatek said.
MUMBAI, APR 27 (IANS): It is no secret that IPL 2022 has seen Virat Kohli struggle to get runs consistently for Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB). In nine matches, Kohli had amassed just 128 runs at an average of 16 and strike-rate of 119.62. Amidst registering consecutive golden ducks and recently nine against the Royals at Pune, many former cricketers have asked Kohli to take a break in order to get some rest. Joining the ‘take a break’ bandwagon is former India head coach Ravi Shastri, who has advised Kohli to pull out of IPL 2022 if he wishes to extend his cricketing career. “I think it (a break) is ideal for him because he has played non-stop cricket and has captained the side across all formats. It will be wise of him to take a break. Sometimes you have to draw the balance. This year he is already into the tournament (IPL 2022), tomorrow if push comes to shove and you want to prolong your international career and make a mark
there for 6-7 years, pull out of the IPL, for all you care,” Shastri said on sports presenter Jatin Sapru’s YouTube channel. Shastri has said that the advice is not only for Kohli but for other Indian cricketers as well. “If that is the case, you have played for 14-15 years. Not only Virat, I’ll tell that to any other player. If you want to play and do well for India, you have to draw the line
where you want to take that break. “The ideal break would be off-season where India is not playing and the only time India does not play is the IPL. Sometimes, you need to do that or tell the franchise I’ll only play the half. Pay me half, as simple as that. Those tough calls will have to come if you want to reach the zenith of your profession as an international player.”

She also said that through sports, people without disabilities can interact with disabled people in proper context and will help them reevaluate their thinking about disabled people. On the other hand, she said that sports will help disabled people to
force change in the society about PwDs. Nakhro further said that with proper support, there is a guarantee that many will make a mark in both national and international arenas. Govt cites ‘poor performance’ as funding to AIFF slashed NEW DELHI, APR 27 (AGENCIES): Taking a stern view of the ‘poor performance’ of the Indian team, the government has slashed its funding to the All India Football Fe d e r a t i o n (AIFF) by almost 85 percent over the last four years. The federation, which has faced financial trouble in the recent past, has seen its grants under the Annual Calendar of Training and Competitions (ACTC) fall from Rs 30 crore for the financial year 2019-20 (for an 18-month period up to September 2020) to Rs 10 crore in 2020-21 and further down to Rs 5 crore this year, Indian Express reported. It is learnt that during the ACTC meeting in New Delhi on March 29, federation officials had made proposals that were at least three times the sanctioned budget. However, the sports ministry and Sports Authority of India (SAI) were not convinced. According to the minutes of the meeting, sports secretary Sujata Chaturvedi noted: “Considering the poor performance of the Indian football team, AIFF was advised to strictly focus on the development of grassroot-level talent.” The funds allocated to football are way less than
what has been earmarked for other major sports, including athletics (Rs 30 crore), badminton, boxing, hockey, shooting (all Rs 24 crore each), archery (Rs 15.85 crore) and weightlifting (Rs 11 crore). Tennis (Rs 5.5 crore), equestrian (Rs 6 crore) and yachting (Rs 5.2 crore), too, have received a bigger budget than football for the current financial year. A ministr y official claimed the AIFF’s developmental work left a lot to be desired, highlighting the inability of age-group teams to make their presence felt at continental level and a women’s football programme that ‘lacked structure’. While India eked out a hard-fought draw against the hosts of this year’s World Cup Qatar in their backyard in 2019, the team, coached by Igor Stimac, has had a series of underwhelming performances since then. In the 2022 World Cup and 2023 Asian Cup joint qualifying tournament, they could not beat lower-ranked teams like Bangladesh and Afghanistan while struggling to get past Sri Lanka, one of the lowest-ranked teams in the world, and Nepal in the South Asian Football championship.

CL: Man City beat Real 4-3 in SFs 1st leg Ukrainian Premier League season
L O N D O N, A P R 2 7 (IANS): Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City will take a slender one-goal lead into the UEFA Champions League semifinal secondleg in eight days’ time after defeating Spanish giants Real Madrid 4-3 in the first leg, in a ridiculously thrilling encounter at the Etihad on Wednesday (IST). City, who are also leading the Premier League table, held a two-goal advantage on three separate occasions, but were pegged back each time by Real who refused to buckle on an enthralling night. The top-flight England club couldn’t have asked for a better start, with a goal inside two minutes to send the Etihad into raptures. Looking sharp and focused from the off, the ball was played out to Riyad Mahrez on the right and the Algerian breezed past a clutch of defenders before picking out Kevin De Br uyne’s superblytimed late run. The Belgian
Kevin De Bruyne scores Manchester City first goal against Real Madrid. guided a low header past international team-mate Thibaut Courtois to make it 1-0, reports mancity.com. Nine minutes later, Phil Foden carried the ball down the left before playing it back to De Bruyne who crossed into the feet of Gabriel Jesus who took advantage of David Alaba’s poor touch to slot the ball
past Thibaut Courtois and send the Etihad into wild celebrations once again. Mahrez and Foden should have increased the lead in the opening 30 minutes but were wayward. On the 33rd minute, Real’s Karim Benzema turned Ferland Mendy’s cross home with the deftest of volleys. The second-half
began as the first as Mahrez raced clear only to see his shot strike the post and Dani Carvajal blocked Foden’s follow-up. However, five minutes later Fernandinho -- a firsthalf replacement for John Stones -- sent in a sublime cross for Foden to head home from close range. City’s two-goal advantage,
however, lasted just three minutes as Vinicius Junior span off Fernandinho just inside his own half before racing towards goal down the left flank and eventually tucking a low shot past Ederson. For the third time in the contest, City went two goals clear. In the 74th minute, Oleks Zinchenko cut inside a challenge on the edge of the box and was brought down. The referee played the advantage and while a clutch of Real defenders seemed to stop, Bernardo picked up the loose ball and thumped it into the top left corner to make it 4-2. But Real were not giving up just yet. A cross into the City box saw the ball strike the arm of Aymeric Laporte as he went up for a header and the referee pointed to the dreaded spot. Benzema was never going to miss, and he slotted the penalty home to make it 4-3 with 82 minutes on the clock.
terminated following Russian invasion
KYIV, APR 27 (AP): The Ukrainian Premier League football season has been officially declared to be over following the Russian invasion. The league said after a video conference with clubs Tuesday that the standings as of Feb. 24, when the Russian invasion began and games were suspended, will be declared final “because the championship cannot be played to completion.” Shakhtar Donetsk was the leader at that time but the league said no official award would be made. The standings could p o t e n t i a l ly d e t e r m i n e qualification for European competitions next season if Ukrainian clubs are deemed able to take part. The league’s decision must be approved by the Ukrainian Football Association. Of the 16 top-flight teams, FC Mariupol’s home stadium is now in territory under Russian control and the stadium of Desna
Shakhtar Donetsk have been playing friendlies as part of the ‘Match for Peace! Let’s stop the War!’ charity event.
Chernihiv was wrecked by bombardments that collapsed part of a stand and left a deep crater in the field. Ukraine’s two biggest teams, Shakhtar and Dynamo Kyiv, are each touring Europe to play a series of charity games against clubs from around the continent and raise funds for people affected by the war. Shakhtar previously had to leave its home city of Donetsk in 2014 when it was taken over by Russia-
backed separatists and has since been based elsewhere in Ukraine, as has another top-division club, Zorya Luhansk. The Ukrainian men’s national team is still in contention to qualify for the World Cup later this year. Ukraine is set to play Scotland in a postponed qualifying playoff game June 1 with the winner of that game to face Wales four days later for a place at the tournament in Qatar.
