The MPs are holding the protest near the Gandhi statue and will stay at the site through night, said Trinamool Congress’ Dola Sen, who is one of the suspended The 20 MPs, suspended over Monday and Tuesday, include seven from the TMC, six from the DMK, three from the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS), two from Communist Party of India (Marxist) and one each from Communist Party of India (CPI) and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP). Jairam Ramesh visited the site of the protests and said his party will be part of the day-night dharna organised by the other Opposition parties. The CPI, whose one member has been suspended, said in a statement the suspension is an assault on the basic rights of freedom of expression of members of Parliament.

Opposition sources also said feelers from the “other side” has indicated that there is a view within the government that suspending 19 opposition MPs at one go in Rajya Sabha was a wrong strategic move and should have been avoided. With the suspension of the MPs in RS concluding on Friday, a discussion on price rise will be taken up after that. Sources in the Opposition also said a detailed plan of action has been drawn out for the dharna and a roster of duties created which is being circulated on a dedicated WhatsApp group. The leaders, however, will have to sleep under the sky, with their request of a tent being denied by the authorities, as no structures can be built, even temporarily inside the premises. The protesting MPs can, however, use the toilet in the bathroom of the Parliament library.

be enough land available for all-round welfare of students. Else, permission would not be given, he added. Similarly, to upgrade schools, he said certain basic facilities must be available for students. Sukhalu said this while addressing the ‘Swachh Vidyalaya Puraskar’ (SVP) 2021-2022 Statelevel felicitation programme held at the directorate of School Education here on Wednesday. Congratulating the awardees, he said SVP was about inculcating the habit of cleanliness.
DIMAPUR, JUL 27 (NPN): Global Naga Forum (GNF) has issued a clarification to clear the misconception of the ‘Naga solidarity walk’ scheduled to be held on July 28 and July 29. In a statement, GNF said its members were conscientious Naga citizens who believe in the peoplehood of the Nagas and “refuse to keep silent at this critical moment in the long history of struggle for the human and indigenous right to self-determination in our ancestral homeland.” “We defy the arbitrary and artificial boundaries of colonial rule that divided and fragmented the Naga family

State BJP president welcomes seat sharing with NDPP for 2023 DIMAPUR, JUL 27 (NPN): A day after NDPP and BJP Nagaland announced the same seat sharing formula as in 2018 for the upcoming 2023 Assembly election, State BJP president Temjen Imna Along welcomed the seat-sharing formula– NDPP 40: BJP 20. In a statement, he expressed gratitude to BJP central leaders led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union home minister Amit Shah, party’s national president JP Nadda and party’s national general secretary (Org) BL Santhosh. Imna asserted that continuation of the alliance’s seat-sharing formula reflected the ruling coalition’s tireless endeavour to
provide good governance to the people of Nagaland. Acknowledging that much work needed to be done Iman said the state party was “encouraged by the visionary leadership of chief minister Neiphiu Rio and deputy chief minister Y. Patton for which the central leadership has once again reposed faith upon our State leaders”. He said each and every karyakarta and karyakarni welcomed the decision and assured to continue to work tirelessly to strengthen the alliance so that the visionary programmes and policies of the Government of India under Modi and percolated down to each and every citizen in every nook
and corner of the State. He also reaffirmed BJP State unit’s commitment to uphold the joint declaration of both the parties with all sincerity. On behalf of the party,Iman also expressed heartfelt gratitude to Shah, Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and BJP national spokesperson and prabhari, Nagaland In- charge Nalin Kohli, for reaffirming the pre-poll alliance to jointly contest the forthcoming Assembly election under seat sharing arrangement with NDPP. He said the par ty looked forward to scaling greater heights in deliverance of good governance to the people in the days ahead.
Was not consulted on seat sharing: Patton DIMAPUR, JUL 27 (NPN): It appears that the announcement of continuing with the 2018 seat sharing arrangement between NDPP and BJP for the 2023 assembly election was decided at some level and without the consent or knowledge of most party members. The announcement was signed by NDPP secretary general Abu Metha and strangely BJP in-charge of Nagaland, Nalin Kohli. Several BJP workers here said that the announcement should have been signed by State BJP chief Temjen Imna Along. State deputy chief minister Y. Patton has expressed unhappiness for being kept in the dark over the decision. According reports in the media, Patton said while the decision was the prerogative of BJP central leaders, yet state BJP workers should have been consulted before making such a decision. Patton termed the joint statement issued on Tuesday merely just a “statement”
which did not project the final outcome of seat-sharing with around six to seven months before the assembly polls. Patton, who is currently in Delhi, said he will return and “discuss” the issue with state BJP workers. Patton, who is also the BJP legislature party leader, felt that Nalin Kohli should have kept him in the loop while deciding on the seat sharing formula. He maintained that state BJP legislative karyakartas have not been consulted). “If the central leadership has taken the decision, I have no comments but still, we need to discuss this issue,”Patton said. Patton told Nagaland Post that he was not aware of the development that took place on July 26. However, BJP being a national party, Patton said the decision must have been taken in the interest of the State BJP and added that the state unit would abide by the decision of the Central leaders. Chümou district to come under ILP purview from Aug 1
DIMAPUR, JUL 27 (NPN): Chümoukedima district will come under the preview of ILP with effect from August 1, 2022. As per a notification issued in this regard by deputy commissioner Chümoukedima Abhinav Shivam, every non-indigenous person entering the district would be required to obtain an ILP in the same mode and manner as presently required for entering the ILP area of Nagaland and under the same condition as provided in the May 3, 2018 notification. Also, every non-indigenous person who had settled or had entered the district
that was previously not covered under ILP before the latest notification and on or after November 21, 1979, the day when Chümoukedima was constituted as a tribal belt, would be required to obtain ILP within 90 days from the date of issue of the current notification. However, every nonindigenous person who had settled or had entered Chümoukedima district prior to November 21, 1979 when ILP was not in force and had been staying continuously would be exempted along with his/her direct descendants from the requirement of having an ILP, subject to
him/her producing evidence in the form of documents like name in the electoral roll, land/property documents, house tax, name in the electoral roll of town committee, school records, trade licences, etc, before the DC. Subsequently, on the basis of the submitted documents and after holding such inquiry that was deemed fit and necessary, the DC would certify that the person in question had been staying continuously from prior to November 21, 1979. Such persons, on the strength of the certificate issued by the DC, would not be required
SC upholds ED’s powers under PMLA NEW DELHI, JUL 27 (AGENCIES): Supreme Court on Wednesday upheld the Enforcement Directorate’s power to arrest and attach property under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), upholding that the “law is not arbitrary”. The court upheld the PMLA’s conditions stipulating that a public prosecutor can oppose the bail application of an accused and bail can be granted to an accused only if there are reasonable grounds to believe that the person would not commit an offense when out. Amendments to the PMLA being passed as a
money bill will be examined by a seven-judge bench, the court said. A petition had challenged amendments made in the PMLA, saying that such changes were part of an ordinary bill and not the money. A petitioner had said amendments to PMLA were “unconstitutional” and “illegal” as they have no relation to money bill provisions enumerated in Article 110 of the Constitution. The court said according to PMLA both indirect and direct proceeds of a crime will come under the ambit of money laundering. “Projecting a property as tainted property would con-
stitute money laundering on its own,” the court said. The court held the proceeds of the crime under PMLA include money laundering, generation, possession, and concealment of tainted money, and the ED is not required to prove whether it is legitimate money or not. Saying that the Act provides a balancing act and shows how proceeds of crime can be traced, the court held that there are enough safeguards for the accused under the Act. The court did not find any merit to challenges raised by petitioners who said the PMLA is arbitrary.
to obtain ILP. Also, any non-indigenous person passing through Chümoukedima district to other State as a transit passenger and having a valid ticket would not be required to obtain ILP. The DC urged GBs and village council chairmen concerned to disseminate the information and ensure the enrolment of ILP for all non-local persons within their respective jurisdiction. The Chümoukedima district administration would carry out regular verification/checking of ILP within the district, the notification added.

NAGALAND POST, DIMAPUR THURSDAY, JULY 28, 2022
Lecture on Naga ancestral remains held in Dimapur as researchers, started communicating with Pitt Rivers Museum. She said colonisers who raided, invaded, burnt and punished Nagas were “exalted as Naga experts for more than a century.” It is now acknowledged that many artefacts collected by colonial officers like Mills and Hutton were carried out often against wishes of Naga people, excluding
some items which were gifts and tributes, the anthropologist said. She maintained that there were also many items including Naga human remains they collected after “punishing the savages”, imprisoning them and burning down Naga villages. “This was theft of Naga cultural artefacts and heritage after inflicting physical violence
to the extent of causing death and destruction of property in our ancestral land”, she stated. “The blind celebration of colonial ethnographers like Hutton and Mills even to the extent of honouring them with annual lectures in Nagaland underlines our colonised mindset”, she asserted. Further, Dr. Dolly encouraged Nagas to join the journey “to
bring back our ancestral human remains”. “Our ancestors are done entertaining the world for more than a century, they are done being exotic show pieces and they are done being misrepresented as primitives and savages”, she stated. Earlier, the programme was chaired by Arien Jamir.

Speaking on the topic, Dr. Dolly said during the lockdown in 2020, Pitt Rivers Museum at Oxford, England, decided to take down human remains of Naga ancestors which were exhibited in the museum for more than a century. Describing it as “insensitive displays that highlighted the violent history of colonialism and imperialism”, she said this was part of the museum’s larger goal of “decolonising the

There are approximately 6466 items comprising on human remains and non-human remains (like textiles, baskets, and jewelleries)”, she stated. On Tuesday, Uttar Pradesh police arrested Marak from Hapur district f o l l ow i n g a c o u n t r y wide ‘look-out’ notice issued against him by the Meghalaya Police since he evaded arrest following a raid on his farm house at Edenbari in West Garo Hills. “ H e ( M a r a k ) wa s produced before a magisterial court in Hapur on Wednesday. Rathore said a team of Meghalaya police will bring Marak back to the state on Thursday. The police apart from raiding the farmhouse also arrested 73 people from the premises and rescued five minors. NAGALAND POST, DIMAPUR THURSDAY, JULY 28, 2022
Trinamool Congress MLAs have ED questions Sonia Gandhi for over 3 hours 38started contacting BJP: Mithun
NEW DELHI, JUL 27 (PTI): The Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Wednesday questioned Congress president Sonia Gandhi for over three hours on the third day of her deposition in the National Herald newspaper linked money laundering case. She was given no fresh summons amid indications that her questioning has concluded. With Wednesday’s questioning, Gandhi has been questioned for more than 11 hours over three days and faced around 100 questions, officials said. Her first round of questioning took place on July 21. Gandhi reached the federal agency’s office in central Delhi at 11 am accompanied by her daughter Priyanka Gandhi Va d r a a n d s o n R a h u l Gandhi. The session began around 11.15 am. The team of investigators included the main probe officer and a person who took down statements dictated by the Congress chief. Sonia Gandhi left the ED office around 2 pm

along with Vadra, who stayed with her at the ‘Pravartan Bhawan’ (ED headquarters) in order to provide any assistance or medical care to her mother. The questioning per tains to the charge of alleged financial irregularities in the Congress-promoted Young Indian Private Limited, which owns the National Herald newspaper. The Congress chief is understood to have stuck to the party’s position that no personal assets were made in the Associate Journals L i m i t e d ( A J L ) - Yo u n g Indian deal and that the
routine affairs were handled by other office bearers, including late Moti Lal Vora. Congress leaders Pawan Bansal and Mallikarjun Kharge have been questioned by the ED in the past. The sessions took place with Covid-appropriate protocols in place and are being recorded in a audiovideo mode, the officials said. The Congress has slammed the agency’s action against its top leadership and termed it as “political vendetta” and “harassment”.
The Delhi Police, like the last two times, deployed a huge force, including CRPF and RAF personnel, and barricaded the over one kilometre stretch between Gandhi’s residence on Janpath and the ED office. Traffic restrictions were also imposed in the area. Rahul Gandhi was also questioned by the ED in this case last month in sessions that clocked over 50 hours over five days. The move to question the Gandhis was initiated after the ED late last year registered a fresh case under the criminal provisions of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act. This was after a trial court here took cognisance of an income tax department probe against Young Indian based on a private criminal complaint by BJP MP Subramanian Swamy in 2013. Sonia and Rahul Gandhi are among the promoters and majority shareholders in Young Indian. Like her son, the Congress president too has 38 per cent shareholding. Swamy had accused the Gandhis and others
of conspiring to cheat and misappropriate funds, with Young Indian paying only Rs 50 lakh to obtain the right to recover Rs 90.25 crore that AJL owed to the Congress. In February last year, the Delhi High Court issued a notice to the Gandhis seeking their response on Swamy’s plea. The Congress has maintained there has been no wrongdoing and Young Indian is a “not-for-profit” company established under section 25 of the Companies Act and hence there can be no question of money laundering. It is understood that Rahul Gandhi, during his deposition before the ED, stuck to the position that there was no personal acquisition of assets by himself or his family. According to the ED, assets worth about Rs 800 crore are “owned” by the AJL and the federal agency wants to know from the Gandhis how a not-forprofit company like Young Indian was undertaking commercial activities of renting out its land and building assets.
KO L K AT A , J U L 2 7 (IANS): As many as 38 legislators of West Bengal’s ruling Trinamool Congress have started contacting state BJP leadership again, megastar-turned-politician and BJP leader Mithun Chakraborty claimed here on Wednesday. Arriving here on Wednesday morning, he had a meeting with top state BJP leaders and then made the revelation at an interaction with media persons at the state BJP headquarters. “As many as 38 MLAs of TMC have started contacting the BJP leadership in the state again. Out of that 38 MLAs, 21 are directly in touch with me,” Chakraborty claimed. H o w e v e r, d e s p i t e repeated requests, he refused to divulge the names of these ruling party legislators. However, at the same time, Chakraborty admitted that there are possibilities that some of the BJP’s own elected re presentatives might also shift camp to the Trinamool. “We had only three representatives in the West Bengal Assembly after the

2016 elections. In the 2021 Assembly elections, we increased the tally to 77 and now we are 70. My appeal to those who want to join Trinamool Congress to do that right now. They are welcome to do that. Once they do that, we will have a clear idea on where we stand and accordingly, we can set up our new team,” Chakraborty said. Reacting to Chakraborty’s comments, Trinamool Congress RS member, Santanu Sen said that probably he “was suffering from some sort of mental illusion which
prompted him to make such absurd claims”. “Rather if TMC opens its doors, then BJP will be totally nonexistent in West Bengal,” said Sen. M e a n w h i l e , commenting on the recent arrest of the state Commerce and Industries Minister, Partha Chatterjee by the ED in connection with the multi-crore West Bengal School Ser vice Commission recruitment scam, Chakraborty said that if someone is not guilty, he should relax and will surely come out clean at the end of the investigation.
ICMR isolates monkeypox virus; may CBI arrests Lalu’s close aide Bhola in land-for-jobs scam in Railways pave way for devp of diagnostic kits, vax NEW DELHI, JUL 27 (PTI): The National Institute of Virology (NIV) in Pune under ICMR has isolated monkeypox virus from the clinical specimen of a patient which can pave the way for development of diagnostic kits and vaccines against the disease, officials said on Wednesday. With India isolating t h e v i r u s, t h e I n d i a n Council of Medical Research also invited expression of interest (EOI) from experienced vaccine manufacturers, pharma companies, research and development institutions and in-vitro diagnostic (IVD) kit manufacturers for joint collaboration in development of vaccine candidate against monkeypox and diagnostic kits for the infection. The virus isolation enhances India’s capacity to do research and development in many other directions, Dr Pragya Yadav, a senior scientist at NIV, said. T h e d e ve l o p m e n t comes amid India reporting four cases of monkeypox -three from Kerala and one from Delhi -- so far. “The National I n s t i t u t e o f Vi r o l o g y has successfully isolated monkeypox virus from the clinical specimen of a patient which can help in the development of
diagnostic kits and also vaccines in future. For smallpox live attenuated vaccine was successful for mass immunisation in the past. Similar approaches on new platforms can be tried for making vaccines. “The virus isolation enhances India’s capacity to do research and development in many other directions,” Dr Yadav said. At present, fluid inside the lesions on the skin are being used for virus isolation as they have the highest viral titre. D r Ya d a v s a i d monkeypox virus is an enveloped double-stranded DNA virus having two distinct genetic clades -- the central African (Congo Basin) clade and the west African clade. “The recent outbreak which has affected several countries leading to a worrisome situation is caused by the West African strain which is less
severe than Congo lineage reported earlier. The cases reported in India are also of the less severe West African lineage,” she told PTI. The EOI documents states that ICMR is willing to make available monkeypox Virus strain/ isolates for undertaking research and development va l i d a t i o n a s we l l a s manufacturing activities using characterized isolates of monkeypox virus under the joint collaboration in the public-private partnership mode for development of vaccine candidate against monkeypox disease and diagnostic kits for diagnosis of the infection. The firm(s)/ organisation(s) would be granted rights to undertake further R&D, manufacture, sell, and commercialize the end product(s) ‘vaccine candidate/IVD’ against the Monkeypox disease under defined Agreement,” the document said.
NEW DELHI/PATNA, JUL 27 (PTI): The CBI has arrested former Bihar chief minister Lalu Prasad’s close aide Bhola Yadav in connection with the “land-for-jobs” scam in the Railways when the RJD supremo was the Railway m i n i s t e r i n t h e U PA government, officials said on Wednesday. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) also conducted searches on Wednesday at four premises -- two each in Darbhanga and Patna -- belonging to Bhola Yadav, who was the officer on special duty (OSD) to the then Railway minister Prasad between 2005 and 2009, they said. The agency was questioning Yadav for the last three to four days during which a need was felt to do his custodial interrogation resulting in his arrest on Tu e s d ay eve n i n g , t h e officials said. “The CBI is receiving and expecting more complaints of such nature in the Railways during the tenure of Lalu Prasad as Railway minister and appeals to anyone having concrete information to share with the CBI. His or her identity will be kept secret,” an official said. The Rashtriya Janata Dal(RJD) alleged that the arrest of Bhola Yadav was a fallout of the party’s opposition to the ruling BJP at the Centre. The BJP hit back
pointing out that most legal wrangles involving the RJD supremo, his family members and confidants had been lodged while the party ruled Bihar or shared power in the Congress-led UPA government at the Centre. “It is no secret that agencies like the CBI, ED and IT department are being used to harass BJP’s political opponents. Bhola babu’s arrest is parakashtha (the limit)”, said state RJD spokesman Shakti Singh Yadav. Bhola Yadav, fondly referred to as “Hanuman” or the “shadow” of Prasad among the RJD supporters, was questioned by the CBI in connection with the scam in which land measuring over one lakh square feet belonging to job aspirants’ families in Patna was allegedly purchased or transferred to Prasad’s family members in return for group-D jobs in the Railways as substitutes. The CBI suspects that Bhola Yadav had played a crucial role in facilitating the jobs and later, the transfer of land to Prasad’s family. “During investigations, it was found that the then OSD to former railway minister...was involved in the alleged conspiracy in appointment of substitutes. It was further alleged that the accused was managing affairs in transfer of land by the family members of substitutes to the family
Bhola Yadav and Lalu Prasad Yadav
members of former railway minister,” a spokesperson of the agency said in a statement. The CBI said Bhola Yadav had also purchased some properties during the period. Considered to be Prasad’s “man Friday”, Bhola Yadav had taken a plunge in electoral politics and won the Bahadurpur seat in Darbhanga in the 2015 Bihar Assembly polls on a RJD ticket. He decided to change the seat in 2020 to Hayaghat in the same district, a decision that proved to be costly as he lost the polls. The agency has also arrested a railway employee, Hridayanand Choudhary, who is an alleged beneficiary of the scam, the officials said. Choudhary was
allegedly appointed as substitute in the year 2005 in the East Central Railway. He had transferred the land to Prasad’s daughter Hema Yadav through a gift deed when the value of land was Rs 62.10 lakh as per prevailing circle rates, the CBI has alleged. This 3,375 square feet land in Patna was transferred to Choudhary by Brij Nandan Rai through a sale deed for Rs 4.21 lakh, the agency alleged. The CBI had filed the FIR on May 18 against Prasad, his wife Rabri Devi and daughters Misa Bharti and Hema Yadav, in addition to 12 people who were given jobs in the railway zones of Mumbai, Jabalpur, Kolkata, Jaipur and Hajipur, the officials said. The agency has alleged
that land measuring about 1.05 lakh square feet in Patna was acquired by Prasad’s family members by making payments to the sellers in cash. “The current value of the above said seven parcels of land, including the land acquired through gift deeds, as per the existing circle rate is about Rs 4.39 crore.... Enquiry has revealed that the parcel of land, which was directly purchased by the family members of Lalu Prasad Yadav from the sellers, was purchased at lower rates than the prevailing circle rates,” the FIR has alleged. It said people were appointed in the Railways without any advertisement or a public notice on the basis of forged documents. The agency had also carried out searches at Prasad’s residence in Patna and other locations on May 20. “We reiterate that the latest CBI case and the raids conducted across the country in connection with the same are sponsored by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which rules at the Centre,” the RJD had alleged after the searches.

Suspension of expression

ndia’s parliamentary democracy may not be the most perfect but even though imperfect, it has been functioning with debates and discussions been taking place, albeit with cycle of disruptions. Parliament and assemblies are the highest fora to raise pertinent issues of utmost importance to the people. In the recent years, what is being witnessed is the cycle of suspension of opposition MPs due to alleged “unruly behaviour”. The opposition have been demanding debates over various issues but are being denied under various pleas by the government. When opposition parties protested and insisted on debates, 23 opposition MPs were suspended on Monday and Tuesday. While four Congress MPs were suspended from Lok Sabha on Monday for the rest of the session, 19 opposition members were suspended on Tuesday for rest of the week. These suspensions come amid a face-off between the government and the Opposition over issues of inflation and Goods and Services Tax’s (GST) imposition on everyday essentials such as packaged and labelled pulses, wheat, rice, flour, and curd. An extreme steps of suspension of MPs has turned the spotlight on the use of disruption of proceedings as a parliamentary tactic. What cannot be denied is that Speaker’s/Chairman’s actions are often dictated more by expediency and the stand of the party that they belong to, rather than by the Rules and principles. With a big chunk of opposition MPs now suspended, it will only leave the Government even more unchecked. Bills are passed in a hurry and even amidst din; the scrutiny of Bills by committees and debates are few and far between. There can be no question that the enforcement of the supreme authority of the Presiding Officer is essential for smooth conduct of proceedings. However, the job of the Presiding Officer is to run the House, not to lord over it. The ruling party of the day invariably insists on the maintenance of discipline, just as the Opposition insists on its right to protest and their positions change when their roles flip. It was the BJP’s late Arun Jaitley who theorised on the legitimacy of disruptions as a parliamentary instrument. As the principal Opposition in the years leading up to 2014, the BJP so disrupted Parliament on a regular basis, that the UPA government was rendered dysfunctional for years. After coming to power since 2014, the BJP has tinkered with parliamentary processes in a way that the Opposition has been pinned down. It should be clear that Parliamentary debates should not be viewed as a distraction or waste of time. They are a barometer of public mood and must be respected as such, by both the ruling side and the Opposition. Disruption as a brief, momentary reaction to a situation that demands debate is understandable, but as a sustained strategy, it is self-defeating. A guiding principle of parliamentary proceedings is that the majority, i.e. the Government, will have its way, and the minority, the Opposition, will have its say. This principle has been observed in its violation in India for several years now. This is no defence of disruption in general or the behaviour of the particular MPs, but the punishment is only worsening the conflict, and not facilitating debate. The moot point is whether suspensions have helped the government or the parliamentary system?
DailyDevotion The Way to Knowledge
If anyone wills to do His will, he shall know concerning the doctrine… —John 7:17 The golden rule to follow to obtain spiritual understanding is not one of intellectual pursuit, but one of obedience. If a person wants scientific knowledge, then intellectual curiosity must be his guide. But if he desires knowledge and insight into the teachings of Jesus Christ, he can only obtain it through obedience. If spiritual things seem dark and hidden to me, then I can be sure that there is a point of disobedience somewhere in my life. Intellectual darkness is the result of ignorance, but spiritual darkness is the result of something that I do not intend to obey. No one ever receives a word from God without instantly being put to the test regarding it. We disobey and then wonder why we are not growing spiritually. Jesus said, “If you bring your gift to the altar, and there remember that your brother has something against you, leave your gift there before the altar, and go your way. First be reconciled to your brother, and then come and offer your gift” (Matthew 5:2324). He is saying, in essence, “Don’t say another word to me; first be obedient by making things right.” The teachings of Jesus hit us where we live. We cannot stand as impostors before Him for even one second. He instructs us down to the very last detail. The Spirit of God uncovers our spirit of self-vindication and makes us sensitive to things that we have never even thought of before. When Jesus drives something home to you through His Word, don’t try to evade it. If you do, you will become a religious impostor. Examine the things you tend simply to shrug your shoulders about, and where you have refused to be obedient, and you will know why you are not growing spiritually. As Jesus said, “First…go….” Even at the risk of being thought of as fanatical, you must obey what God tells you.

NAGALAND POST, DIMAPUR THURSDAY, JULY 28, 2022

Self-acclaimed associations of Nagaland!
wonder how different groups with different motives form different associations and wanted to dominate others either by trying to be independent or by placing themselves as the apex body to solve Naga issues. All ventures are good but not at the expense of disintegrating society selfishly. The emergence of excessive associations in Nagaland is becoming a menace to society. Every association wanted to be on the top list. Even the oldest man and woman find consolation by being a member of one or two associations. As a human, there is no denial of the need for recognition. However, such desire is stronger in some people. They wanted to be acclaimed at the forefront of society. People with this personality grow like wild
S
beasts in society. They must be tamed and controlled failing which they might eat up their friends, neighbours and the association itself. The dominating attitude is all that matters for most Nagas. Some associations wanted to dominate the world with might and power. They depict themselves as working ceaselessly for Naga society. They hold meetings after meetings to make themselves appear even more important. They want to be more Nagas than the rest of the Nagas. They want to have a greater say in all issues. But they exist only as another thorn for society. They work for Nagas in the opposite direction! Their birth is unclean. Most associations emerged because they could not digest their food under someone. They wanted to be the boss of their own
life to solve Naga’s issues for eternity. Nagas have seen numerous diluted clashes of associations internally and externally. Some of them are the best living examples. Internal clashes occur when one group wanted to be right at all seasons. My association, my tribe, and my people must dominate others either silently or arrogantly. If an issue favours their tribe, the members will make sure that they win at all costs even to the extent of declaring a noncooperation movement to its association. Conversely, the same group can lend long helping hands to people of the same feather even if it is ethically and socially wrong. They know whom to hide and whom to expose. This makes most associations disintegrate, and not worthy
of trust. Some groups within the group are the worst enemy of the group. They know when to wake and sleep. They know when to roar and when to be silent. Continuous selfish games within the association are still at work even today. I appreciate their unity for disunity. Today, we have come to a state where hundreds of associations wanted to be at the forefront of changing the face of Nagaland. They wanted to solve Naga issue through their doors and windows. However, they cannot face each other for a common cause. At every juncture, they disintegrate instead of uniting stronger to face the enemy. There is a rush of association towards a blind destiny. Some groups exist under the aegis of the bigger united body only to hide their
weaknesses and fox-like personality. There is no higher or lower association. Social status is not determined by the number of meetings, lengthy historical public speeches or self-acclaimed position. No association should turn the future of Nagas into a stormy island. They must stop pretending to be the sole guardian of Naga society. If any association cannot work together with others, they should keep their flame inside their house to light up their own family. Let no association bring injury to Naga society. Do not for m new association/s to solve Naga issues. Why? Later, some people will have to form another association to solve your issues. Moreover, some members may walk out to form another association
as a result of differences in opinion. It can be coloured by tribes, regions or political affiliation. Associations and Naga political groups are competing in number to solve the lone pending issues. Stop the show! Nagas have enough issues to solve for generations. All associations are great in themselves, but only a few are trustworthy. A common vision can only bring about a common platform for Nagas. Nagas must learn to sit together as equals rather than giving birth to numerous unworthy associations which are heretic in nature. I believe Nagaland could progress justly and rightly on time if all fake associations cease to exist. Beware of fake associations! Promote the right, demote the wrong. Rev. Fr. G. L. Khing, Dimapur
A reflection on the celebration of 150 years of Christianity
ince the inception of Christianity, establishment of the first church and mission field in Nagaland, we have seen overwhelming growth and planting of churches over the last 150 years. These are wonderful significances revealing the workings of God through the missionaries and the acceptance of Christ by the Nagas. Nagaland has a proud heritage of pioneer missionaries and evangelists. We continue seeing many committed men and women of God in His service. However, in the context of celebrating its 150 years of Christianity, Naga Christians can pause and critically reflect upon some models of giving and mission within Nagaland and our churches. When the state government implemented the 7th Pay Commission (ROP) in Nagaland, there was relief and excitement. Many families must have given thanks to God for the good initiative taken by the government. In recent years, we have seen growth and development in the funds and facilities of many churches and associations. Big offerings are made through Sunday devotional worships alone. In the
act of sanctifying and thanksgiving for the great offerings, the Pastor uses the help of a table/stand to place the offering basket, as the weight becomes heavy to bear and pray. Despite the offerings and blessings within the churches, there are still feelings of worry and uncertainty amongst the full-time church workers! Truth be told, every household experience its sets of responsibility, expenses, and obligations in terms of monthly mess, clothing, medical and children’s educational needs. The commitment and dedication of these full-time church workers of bearing the cross and burdens of the worldly needs in the service of the Lord, however, gives them a sense of persistence to overcome their material deficits. A majority of the public and lay people recognise these needs and challenges faced by the full-time church workers. Yet, their inability and helplessness make them mere spectators of such problems. The time-to-time raise in the salary of the full-time church workers may seem convenient to assume that we are doing something beneficial. Every time
there is a revision in the pay scale of the government employees, the market increases the price of all essential commodities in the blink of an eye. This in return increasing the woes and plights of those whose salaries remain unchanged by such revised pay appraisal. Dear fellow Naga Christians, do we not agree that it is time that all our full-time mission workers also need to be provided salaries at par with the government employee? Do we not see it as the will of God that we provide sufficient and proper benefits, so our fulltime church workers do not suffer in the plight and worries of their material or basic needs for their families? When we are celebrating 150 years of Christianity in Nagaland, it is only fitting that we reflect and plan such noble act for the good welfare of those in the service of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. The Apostle Paul’s letter in 1 Timothy 5:17 speaks loud and clear on giving worthy double honor and deserving wages to those who direct the affairs of the church. Almost all churches in the towns of Nagaland are grown,
matured and self-sufficient. Then, what role do such churches plan to initiate and fulfil in doing God’s holistic ministry? Indeed, there are some small, slow growing churches that are being supported by other churches and their associations in terms of salary and mission. These are prime models and inspirations for many Christians. Most of the churches in the first world countries have very good package for their full-time church leaders in terms of both salary and facilities. For such a model, we can learn from our close neighbouring state of the Mizoram Presbyterian church where they provide salaries with very good pay scale in addition to offering support for the education of their children. How do these churches flourish? The offerings are contributed as a means of righteous and uncorrupted earnings which is acceptable before God and before people too. When Naga Christians also realises and learn to earn and give to the church through honest and uncorrupted ways, our God’s favour and blessings will be upon the individuals, families, and
churches too. How did we allow our promise of sending forth 10,000 missionaries from Nagaland become stunted! It is the right time for every Naga Christian, young and old alike to take upon this renewed commitment in fulfilling this promise. We have allowed God’s great Commission to become narrow and compromised its true nature. Every Naga Christian has to carry forward this obligation and fulfil in our own ability and potential. As we prepare for the celebration of this Sesquicentennial, we can take this as a God-given privilege to contribute according to our means. A revival in the nature of our Christian commitment and in the nature of our Christian giving is the need of the hour. This revival can open the floodgates of heaven with God’s favour and bestow blessings upon Nagaland with a revived generation of God fearing, passionate men and women of God. This remains another ardent and sincere prayer of the Naga church elders and believers. Praise God! Y. Imsu Imchen, Social activist
Know about the silent killer on this World Hepatitis Day Socio-cultural sensitivity World Hepatitis Day is observed each year on 28 July to raise awareness of viral hepatitis, which causes inflammation of the liver that leads to severe disease i.e. liver cirrhosis and liver cancer. What makes hepatitis a global health problem Every 30 seconds, someone dies from a viral hepatitis related illness. However, with the existing prevention, testing and treatment services that are available every hepatitis related death is preventable. Hepatitis can affect anyone, but it has a disproportionate affect on the people and communities most underserved by health systems. WHO aims to achieve hepatitis elimination by 2030. To get there, WHO calls on countries to achieve specific targets: • Reduce new infections of hepatitis B and C by 90%; • Reduce hepatitis related deaths from liver cirrhosis and cancer by 65%; • Ensure that at least 90% of people with hepatitis B and C virus are diagnosed; and • At least 80% of those eligible receive appropriate treatment. What is hepatitis? Hepatitis is an inflammation of the liver. Inflammation is swelling that happens when tissues of the body are injured or infected. It can damage your liver. Hepatitis is one of the most common cause of liver cirrhosis and liver cancer. Hepatitis can be an acute (short-term) infection or a chronic (long-term) infection. Some types of hepatitis cause only acute infections. Other types can cause both acute and chronic infections. What causes hepatitis? There are different types of hepatitis, with different causes : • Viral hepatitis is the most common type. It is caused by one of several viruses - hepatitis viruses A, B, C, D and E. • Alcoholic hepatitis is caused by heavy alcohol intake. • Toxic hepatitis can be caused by certain poisons, chemi-
cals, medicines, or supplements • Autoimmune hepatitis is a chronic type in which your body’s immune system attacks your liver. The cause is not known, but genetics and your environment may play a role. How is viral hepatitis spread? Hepatitis A and hepatitis E usually spread through contact with food or water that was contaminated with an infected person’s stool. You can also get hepatitis E by eating undercooked pork, deer, or shellfish. Hepatitis B, hepatitis C, and hepatitis D spread through contact with the blood of someone who has the disease. Hepatitis B and D may also spread through contact with other body fluids. This can happen in many ways, such as sharing drug needles or having unprotected sex. Who is at risk for hepatitis? The risks are different for the different types of hepatitis. For example, with most of the viral types, your risk is higher if you have unprotected sex. People who drink a lot over long periods of time are at risk for alcoholic hepatitis. What are the symptoms of hepatitis? Some people with hepatitis do not have symptoms and do not know they are infected. If you do have symptoms, they may include: • Fever • Fatigue • Loss of appetite • Nausea and/or vomiting • Abdominal pain • Dark urine • Clay-colored bowel movements • Joint pain • Jaundice, yellowing of your skin and eyes If you have an acute infection, your symptoms can start anywhere between 2 weeks to 6 months after you got infected. If you have a chronic infection, you may not have symptoms until
many years later. What other problems can hepatitis cause? Chronic hepatitis can lead to complications such as cirrhosis (scarring of the liver), liver failure, and liver cancer. Early diagnosis and treatment of chronic hepatitis may prevent these complications. How is hepatitis diagnosed? To diagnose hepatitis, your health care provider: • Will ask about your symptoms and medical history • Will do a physical exam • Will likely do blood tests, including tests for viral hepatitis • Might do imaging tests, such as an ultrasound, CT scan, or MRI • May need to do a liver biopsy to get a clear diagnosis and check for liver damage What are the treatments for hepatitis? Treatment for hepatitis depends on which type you have and whether it is acute or chronic. Acute viral hepatitis often goes away on its own. To feel better, you may just need to rest and get enough fluids. But in some cases, it may be more serious. You might even need treatment in a hospital. There are different medicines to treat the different chronic types of hepatitis. Possible other treatments may include surgery and other medical procedures. People who have alcoholic hepatitis need to stop drinking. If your chronic hepatitis leads to liver failure or liver cancer, you may need a liver transplant. Can hepatitis be prevented? There are different ways to prevent or lower your risk for hepatitis, depending on the type of hepatitis. For example, not drinking too much alcohol can prevent alcoholic hepatitis. There are vaccines to prevent hepatitis A and B. Autoimmune hepatitis cannot be prevented. Zion Hospital and Research Centre, Dimapur
O
ne day, a student asked me what the most beautiful thing about our country was. I pondered a while then replied that ours was the only country where we coexisted with almost all religions of the world. Ours is a country where all the festivals of the world are celebrated with the same fervor. It is the country where the largest number of languages are being spoken. Since time immemorial our ancestors nurtured social and cultural sensitivity in our society. They taught us the need to recognize social and cultural differences. And in society, an understanding was made of different races, ethnicity, language, religions, morals, values, and ethical behaviour. If today we are celebrating the range of social and cultural diversity in our country the credit goes to our forefathers who sowed the seeds of tolerance and social harmony. Fissiparous tendencies had always been shunned in ancient Indian culture. Over time, we forgot this sensitivity. It is the need of the hour to develop socio-cultural sensitivity once again. We mustn’t make any assumptions about the persons belonging to another caste, religion, or ethnicity. Many times we pass our judgments on certain historic personalities without knowing the cultural, social, and historic perspectives of their actions. It develops intolerance and the harmonious environment of society gets shattered. Cultural awareness begins with self-awareness. “What are my cultural values, beliefs, and attitudes?” “How are these elements of my culture reflected in my behavior?” and “How adaptable and tolerant am I?” We should try to observe intently not just our actions that could be culturally imbibed, but also the actions of others. This helps us in responding to others rationally.
Being socially and culturally sensitive will help us in developing empathy, becoming inclusive, and embracing diversity. This enables us to make informed decisions in all spheres of our social life. It is pertinent to mention here that everyone has some unconscious biases, but they can create a lot of problems when they surface in our daily life and lead to unfair decisions. Social and cultural sensitivity makes us aware of biases embedded in our psychology and also helps to get rid of this negativity. To accept diversity, it is necessary to appreciate, recognize and be aware of ourselves and others. If we are not culturally and socially sensitive and unwilling to admit differences and diversity, conflict is likely to happen and it is dangerous for everyone. Some people are culturally intolerant, perhaps because they suffer from a sense of cultural superiority. Cultural intolerance is the root cause of xenophobia, racism, and unilateralism, and thus often leads to regional and global tensions and conflicts. Cultural and social inclusiveness and tolerance can play a crucial role in bringing people closer who speak different languages, practice different religions, follow different customs, believe in different values, and therefore promote harmony. Being socially and culturally sensitive does not mean compromising our own culture or sacrificing our values or identity for others. This skill simply helps us to understand how we can best adapt our approach, thoughts and decision to maintain harmony. It is about respecting others’ social and cultural concerns as well as our own. It is accepting the differences and focusing on similarities is key to building stronger relationships in society. Dr. Sanjeev Gandhi, Associate Professor, Government College Radaur

BJP youth leader’s murder sparks Rahul slams PM over suspension of MPs tension in K’tata’s Dakshina Kannada
Poses 10 questions
NEW DELHI, JUL 27 (PTI): In a scathing attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday accused him of running a “dictatorship” where the MPs are “arrested” and ‘’suspended” for asking people’s questions to the ‘’king’’. Gandhi’s remarks came after the suspension of 24 opposition MPs in Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha for disrupting proceedings in Parliament and the detention of Congress leaders who were protesting on streets against the questioning of party chief Sonia Gandhi in the National Herald case and the alleged “misuse of agencies”. In a Facebook post in Hindi, Gandhi said he is putting out the 10 questions that had to be asked of the “king”. He flagged concerns over issues like unemployment, the Agnipath scheme, high fuel prices, border intrusions, the promise of Minimum Suppor t Price (MSP),

farmers’ income, and the falling value of the Rupee among others. “In the Monsoon session, we wanted to discuss the issues of the people with the prime minister. There were many questions of the people that the prime minister and his government had to answer. “But look at his dictatorship, the prime minister got so angry on being asked questions that he got 57 MPs arrested and 23 suspended,” Gandhi said. Twenty MPs in Rajya Sabha and four in Lok Sabha were suspended following continuous protests
by opposition parties for an immediate discussion on issues of price rise and GST levy on rice, flour, curd and other daily use items. Gandhi asked why unemployment was the “highest in 45 years” and also what happened to the promise of two crore jobs every year. “Why are you snatching the food of the people by imposing GST on everyday food items like curd and cereals,” the former Congress chief asked. Gandhi also asked when will the people get relief from the sky-high pric-
es of cooking oil, petroldiesel and LPG cylinder. Why did the rupee cross 80 against the dollar, he said He also said that not a single recruitment had been in the army for two years and asked why the youth are being forced to become ‘Agniveer’ on a four-year contract. “Chinese army has entered our borders in Ladakh and Arunachal Pradesh, why are you silent and what are you doing?” he said in his sixth poser to the government. Claiming that insurance firms made a benefit of Rs 40,000 crore through crop insurance, Gandhi asked why the government was silent on its promise of ‘doubling farmers’ income’ by 2022. “What happened to the promise to farmers of the right MSP? And what happened to the compensation to the families of the farmers who were martyred in the farmers’ movement?” Gandhi said. In his ninth poser, Gandhi asked why the 50 per cent discount available on senior citizens’ rail tickets was discontinued
and why the government did not have money to give discounts to the elderly when it can spend money on promotion. “The debt of the central government was 56 lakh crore in 2014, now it has increased to 139 lakh crore, and by March 2023, it will be 156 lakh crore. Why are you drowning the country in debt?” Gandhi said. He said the list of questions is very long but the prime minister should first answer these 10 questions. “Threatening the Congress party will not end your accountability, we are the voice of the people and will continue to raise their issues,” Gandhi asserted. Earlier in the day, Gandhi said while the “king” is afraid of facing questions in the temple of democracy, “we well know how to fight dictators”. “Why is a cylinder costing Rs 1053? Why GST on curd and cereals? Why mustard oil for Rs 200? The ‘king’ arrested 57 MPs and suspended 23 MPs for asking questions on inflation and unemployment,” Gandhi said in a tweet in Hindi.
MANGALURU/BENGALURU, JUL 27 (PTI): A BJP yuva morcha leader’s killing by unidentified assailants led to tension at several places in Dakshina Kannada district in Karnataka on Wednesday with instances of stone-pelting and police lathicharge being reported, while the partyled government assured strict punishment against individuals or organisations behind the killing. While the police registered a case of murder, Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai said the government would not hesitate to hand over the case to the National Investigation Agency (NIA), if required. The Sangh Parivar had called for a bandh in Puttur, Kadaba and Sullia taluks in Mangaluru on Wednesday in protest against the murder and shops downed shutters. Praveen Nettar, a Zilla BJP Yuva Morcha committee member was hacked to death in front of his broiler shop in Bellare by three bike-borne miscreants on Tuesday night. A resident of Nettaru in Bellare in Dakshina Kan-

nada district, the 32 year-old man was hacked to death when he was heading home after closing his shop. “He tried to escape and ran but he fell down after a blow on his head,” police said. Local residents immediately informed the police, which rushed to the spot and took Nettar to the hospital, where doctors declared him brought dead. With BJP and Sangh Parivar supporters and workers turning their angst against the government accusing it of not standing up to protect the lives of Hindu Karyakartas, Bommai assured of arrest and strictest punishment to the culprits soon and said, “don’t have any doubts about it.” Stating the government will not rest until all persons
or organisations behind the incident are punished, he said the government will not hesitate to hand over the case to the NIA, if required. Police have registered a case of murder at Bellare police station and have formed four teams to investigate in different angles and to nab the murderers. Few people are being questioned at the police station, a senior official said. Following the murder, incidents of stone-pelting at government buses were reported from some places. A bus plying from Puttur to Mangaluru was damaged in the stone-pelting incident at Bolwar. Meanwhile, the body of the deceased BJP worker was taken in a procession in an ambulance to Nettaru by activists of Sangh organisations. The last rites of the youth leader were performed at his native place Nettaru. His inconsolable wife Nuthana told a local TV channel that her husband was innocent, and that no innocents should meet with the “injustice” he faced.

Banerjee also asserted that anyone was proven guilty by the court must be punished but probe “agencies must not be used to malign political parties”. Addressing a programme of Titagarh Wagons, Banerjee denounced media trials in the scam. “When you run a big institution, there can be mistakes. If anyone has committed any mistake, and it is proven legally, he or she must be punished. But I am against any malicious media campaign. Media is playing the role of kangaroo (court). The court said that disclosing the reasons for the arrest to the accused is enough. “Even the ED manual is not to be published since it is an internal document. The Department has to explore the desirability of uploading broad objectives of Act on its website,” the court held. The court also rejected the argument about the proportionality of punishment under PMLA concerning scheduled offenses. “It is wholly unfounded and rejected,” the court held.

Ready to listen to protesters, says SL’s newly-elected PM Gunawardena
Sri Lanka’s Prime Minister Dinesh Gunawardena (right) with President Ranil Wickremesinghe.
C O L O M B O, J U L 2 7 (PTI): Sri Lanka’s newlyappointed Prime Minister Dinesh Gunawardena on Wednesday said the government is ready to listen to the demands of democratic public protesters, but denounced acts of terrorism, calling it the “greatest threat to democracy.” Gunawardena, 73, an ally of the Rajapaksas and a school friend of the newly-elected President Ranil Wickremesinghe, was sworn in as the Sri Lankan Prime Minister last week amid an
unprecedented economic and political crisis. Addressing Parliament on Wednesday, Gunawardena said the Sri Lankan government is ready to listen to the democratic public protests, but they could not accept acts of terrorism. “Terrorism was the greatest threat to democracy, and the Parliament which upholds democracy would not support such acts of terrorism,” the Daily Mirror newspaper quoted him as telling the lawmakers. “There could be differ-
ent political ideologies but the Parliament should work in unison to address the issues faced by the people,” he added. Sri Lanka’s security forces forcibly evicted anti-government protesters camped outside the presidential office in Colombo in a pre-dawn raid on Friday on the order of President Wickremesinghe that left more than 50 people injured. The assault on the protesters evoked widespread criticism, including from foreign envoys stationed in Colombo. At least nine persons were arrested in the incident at Galle Face protest site where several key government offices are located. On July 9, anti-government protesters occupied the residences of former President Rajapaksa and Wickremesinghe after storming into their premises and setting fire to one of the buildings protesting the government’s handling of the unprecedented economic crisis.

SINGAPORE, JUL 27 (IANS): Sri Lanka’s former President Gotabaya Rajapaksa will extend his stay in Singapore, as his short-term visit pass has been extended by another 14 days, local media reported. Sri Lanka’s cabinet spokesman Bandula Gunawardena said on Tuesday at a press conference in Colombo that Rajapaksa is expected to return to the country from Singapore, the Straits Times reported
on Wednesday. Rajapaksa arrived in Singapore from the Maldives on July 14, and he was issued a 14-day visit pass when he arrived at the Changi Airport. He initially stayed at a hotel in the city centre but is believed to have moved to a private residence, Xinhua news agency reported quoting The Straits Times. Singapore’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said on July 14 that Rajapaksa had not asked for asylum and neither had he been granted any asylum. The ministry added that Singapore generally does not grant requests for asylum. Sri Lanka’s Parliament Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena announced the official resignation of Rajapaksa on July 15.
Ranil Wickremesinghe was on Wednesday discharged from court proceedings by the Supreme Court in a case seeking legal action against 39 individuals allegedly responsible for the mismanagement of the country’s economy that has led to the unprecedented economic crisis. The apex court, however, named former President Gotabaya Rajapaksa as a respondent in the fundamental rights petitions, the Daily Mirror newspaper reported. Gotabaya, who fled the country after anti-government protesters stormed the presidential house as well as office on July 9, was named as a respondent since presidential immunity does not apply to him following his resignation from the post of the President and his escape to Singapore in the face of

The petitions filed by at least three university academics, Sri Lankan swimmer and coach Julian Bolling, former Chairman of the Ceylon Chamber of Commerce Chandra Jayaratne, global civil society organisation Transparency International, and entrepreneur Jehan Canaga Retna urged authorities to take legal action against the main culprits responsible for the current economic crisis.

The protesters widely blame the erstwhile Rajapaksa family for mishandling the worst economic crisis in the island nation. The President’s Counsel Chandaka Jayasundere, appearing on behalf of the petitioners, informed the court that the suppliants were not expecting to seek a relief against Wickremesinghe although he had been named as a respondent in the petition.
Russia cuts gas through Nord Strong quake kills 5, injures dozens in northern Philippines Stream 1 to 20% of capacity that Russia could completely cut off gas that is used to power industry, generate electricity and heat homes to try to gain political leverage over Europe as it tries to bolster its storage levels for winter. Data on the Nord Stream website and the head of Germany’s network regulator, Klaus Mueller, confirmed the reduction. “Gas is now a part of Russian foreign policy and possibly Russian war strategy,” Mueller told Deutschlandfunk radio. Natural gas prices have surged on Europe’s TTF benchmark to levels not seen since early March and are nearly six times
higher than they were a year ago. Soaring energy prices are fuelling record inflation, squeezing people’s spending power and heightening concerns that Europe could plunge into recession if it does not save enough gas to get through the cold months. That fear led EU governments on Tuesday to agree to reduce natural gas use to protect against further Russian supply cuts. Japan, Indonesia to boost naval security ties as China rises TOKYO, JUL 27 (AP): The leaders of Japan and Indonesia agreed Wednesday to bolster their ties in maritime security and their cooperation on climate change, energy and investment between the Asian archipelago nations. Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, at a joint news conference after holding talks with Indonesian President Joko Widodo in Tokyo, said Japan will provide support to “further reinforce Indonesian maritime security capability to ensure peace and safety at sea in the Indo-Pacific region.” Kishida also announced that Tokyo is loaning 43.6 billion yen ($318 million) to fund Indonesian infrastructure projects and disaster prevention. Widodo’s Japan visit
follows his trip to China, where he met with Chinese President Xi Jinping and formally invited him to the Group of 20 summit in Bali in the fall. The two leaders on Tuesday also discussed issues ranging from trade to maritime cooperation. While Indonesia and China enjoy generally positive ties, Jakarta has expressed concern about Chinese encroachment on its exclusive economic zone in the South China Sea, which China claims virtually in its entirety. Widodo’ comments in Tokyo focused on investment, energy and the G-20 summit. Widodo welcomed new Japanese investments and asked for Japan’s support in new technology involving clean energy, infrastructure, medicine, agriculture and natural resources.

reinforced monkeypox action
BRUSSELS, JUL 27 (AP): The European Union’s commissioner for health is urging the bloc’s governments to step up their efforts to tackle the expanding monkeypox outbreak in the region, which she says is “the epicentre of detected cases.” In a letter to the EU’s 27 health ministers obtained by The Associated Press, EU Health Commissioner Stella Kyriakides called Wednesday for a “reinforced, concerted and coordinated action.” “There is no time for complacency and we need to continue working together to control the outbreak,” she wrote. Last week, the World Health Organisation declared the monkeypox outbreak a global emergency. It is WHO’s highest level of alert but the desig-
nation does not necessarily mean a disease is particularly transmissible or lethal. Similar declarations were made for the Zika virus in 2016 in Latin America and the ongoing effort to eradicate polio, in addition to the COVID-19 pandemic and the 2014 Ebola outbreak in West Africa. Kyriakides said the bloc’s priorities at this stage must include stepping up the identification and reporting of cases and preventing the spread of infection. The European Commission, the bloc’s executive arm, has secured the purchase of 160,000 doses of vaccines for the disease and Kyriakides said two joint procurement procedures are in preparation for the purchase of further jabs and the antiviral drug Tecovirimat.

Hundreds of houses and buildings had cracked walls, including some that collapsed in Abra, where President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., who took office less than a month ago, planned to travel Thursday to meet victims and local officials. Marcos Jr. told a news conference he was in his office at the riverside Malacanang presidential palace complex when the chandeliers began swaying and making clanking sounds. “It was very strong,” he said of the ground shaking. In a chilling neardeath experience, Filipino photojour nalist Harley Palangchao and companions were travelling down-

Amid screams of his companions in their van to “back up, back up!” the 44-year-old father of three raised his camera in the front seat and snapped what he feared could be the final pictures of his life. The van in front of them was grazed by a boulder, injuring one, but he and others in the second van drove backward fast enough and escaped unscathed. “I was thinking there should be at least a record if something happened to us,” Palangchao told the AP. “It was a horrific experience.”

How Your Sleep Position Affects Your Health Strike Your Sleep Pose You turn off the lights and get yourself ready to snooze. Are you on your back, side, or stomach? Though there is no strong science connecting your sleep position to things like back pain, snoring, personality, and how often you wake up during the night, here are some interesting associations that have been noted. On Your Belly Are you a tummy sleeper? If so, do you have problems sleeping? Your slumber pose may not be helping. You’re more likely to be restless and toss and turn to get comfortable when you sleep on your belly. It can strain your neck and your lower back, too. If this is how you like to sleep, you may want to use a very soft pillow or
none at all to keep your neck comfortable. Belly Position: Freefall About 7% of the population sleeps this way. You lie on your belly with your arms around a pillow and your head turned sideways. If this is your favorite sleep position, some research suggests you may be more likely to speak your mind and be sociable and outgoing. You also may not be very open to criticism. Back Sleeping This position can cause low back pain for some people. And if you already have that, it can make it worse. If you snore or have sleep apnea, it can make those bigger problems, too. If you have one of these issues and can’t get comfortable another way, talk to your doctor about
what might help. Back Position: Soldier This position is favored by about 8% of the population. You sleep with your arms down and close to your body. Some research suggests you may be more likely to be quiet and keep to yourself. You also may expect a lot from yourself
and from others. Back Position: Starfish Only about 5% of people sleep this way. You lie on your back with your arms up near your head. According to some studies, you may be more likely to be a good listener and not want to be the center of attention.
Side Sleeping There are many ways to sleep on your side, but the most comfortable is with your knees bent slightly toward your chest -- the fetal position. Side Position: Fetal More than 40% of people sleep in this curled-up side-sleeping position. It’s the most common position for women -- they’re twice as likely as men to sleep like this. Some research suggests you may be more likely to be warm, friendly, and sensitive, but you also may have a protective shell around you. Side Position: Log This is when you sleep on your side with both arms down. About 15% of people “sleep like a log.” Some research says you may tend to be social, easygoing, and

It claimed that there the quality of athletes reflected the neglect of individuals at young age and physical teachers and coaches who it said, were given “less importance” in schools. The union also visited responsible departments

It also appealed to all the trained unemployed physical education individuals to get enrolled in ANTPEUU. Further, the union expressed hope that the state government will soon pay heed to its demand.

trusting. Side Position: Yearner About 13% of people sleep in this side position with their arms out in front of their bodies. If you sleep like this, some studies say you may be open-minded, but suspicious, and stubborn about sticking to a decision once you’ve made it. Side Position: Spooning With your body close to your partner, you may wake up more often, but cuddling can be good for you. It makes your body release a chemical called oxytocin that can help lower your stress, bond you to your partner, and help you get to sleep faster. If You Snore To keep the noise level down at night, side sleeping is best. If you like to sleep on your back, stacking up
a few pillows may help. See your doctor if your snoring makes you gasp for breath or feel tired the next day, or if it wakes you (or your partner) up. Loud snoring can be a sign that you may have sleep apnea -- a condition that stops and restarts your breathing when you sleep. It can lead to stroke, high blood pressure, and heart disease. If You Have Back Pain Side sleeping wins for this, too. To take even more pressure off your hips and back, you can put a pillow between your legs. If you’re a back sleeper, you might put one under your knees to keep the natural curve of your back. If You’re Pregnant It’s usually more comfortable -- and healthier for you and your baby -- if you
sleep on your side. And the left side may be better, because it may get more blood and nutrients to your baby. If you have back pain, put a pillow under your belly to support the weight. It can also help to bend your knees and put a pillow between your legs. What About Your Mattress? A mattress that works with your sleep style and body type can help with many issues. It should be firm enough to support your back and sleep position, but soft enough to fit the shape of your body. This isn’t always easy to figure out. Some stores will let you test a mattress for several weeks and change it out if it doesn’t work for you. Nayana Ambardekar, MD

SAFF U-20 C’ship: India lose to B’desh in opener KDFA holds trial; 26 shortlisted
Bangladesh players celebrate after winning the match against India during their SAFF U-20 football match at Kalinga Stadium, in Bhubaneswar. (PTI) them dividends in the 29th minute. Indian captain Bikash Yumnam failed to intercept and clear a long ball from the rival defence line. Much to his frustration he saw it falling to Nova who sidestepped Halen Nongtdu, and slotted home. A minute later, Bangladesh should have doubled the
lead but Moinul Islam, all in the clear of Nova’s curling centre from the right, headed wide. The miss proved costly as India pulled it back 4 minutes later with Gurkirat Singh heading in India’s equaliser. Gurkirat delectably adjusted his balance and space in between the
defenders to head home Vibin Mohanan’s cross. However, more drama was in store as Bangladesh earned a penalty in added time of the first half, when the referee found Tankadhar Bag guilty for pulling Md. Nahian inside the box. Nova gleefully buried it from the spot as Bangla-
desh headed to the interval enjoying a 2-1 lead. Changing over, India earned their first corner of the match in the 50th minute when Himanshu Jangra’s effort from the top of the 18-yard box deflected for a corner. However, it didn’t pay much dividends. Tr ying to make amends, India earned a free-kick in the zone in the 55th minute when Shahidul Islam brought down Vibin. But Gurkirat’s effort sailed over. The first yellow card of the match was flashed at Pritam Meetei in the 65th minute for an offence on Shahidul. Head Coach Shanmugam Venkatesh used all his substitutions by the 70th minute, and though the Indian boys played it amongst themselves, they couldn’t penetrate to break down a stubborn rival defence. India’s last chance fell to substitute Taison Singh in added time when he trapped it at the edge of the box, went past a couple of defenders, but the defence recovered fast to deny him. India next play Sri Lanka on August 29.
Iyer, Dhawan move up while Rohit, Kohli CWG: Boxing team in turmoil as drop a spot each in ICC ODI Rankings doctor’s accreditation changed
Shreyas Iyer and Shikhar Dhawan DUBAI, JUL 27 (IANS): Stand-in India captain Shikhar Dhawan and batter Shreyas Iyer moved up while regular skipper Rohit Sharma and talismanic batter Virat Kohli dropped a spot each in the latest updates to the ICC Men’s ODI Rankings on Wednesday. Dhawan, who scored a match-winning 97 in the first ODI against the West Indies, has moved up one place to joint-13th position while Iyer, who hit back-toback fifties, is up 20 places to joint-54th spot in the rankings for the batters. Fast bowler Mohammad Siraj is in the top 100 of the bowlers’ rankings. For the West Indies, opener and vice-captain Shai Hope is up three places to 12th place after his valiant 115 in the second match while fast bowler Alzarri Joseph has gained two
places to reach 16th position after grabbing two wickets each in both matches. In the ODI series between England and South Africa finished at 1-1, it was in-form Proteas star Quinton de Kock that benefitted most as he jumped two places to be at fourth place. De Kock hit an unbeaten 92 during the final match of the series in Leeds, which meant that the India duo of Kohli (fifth) and Rohit (sixth) each dropped a spot courtesy of de Kock’s moves. In the ICC Men’s Test Player rankings, Pakistan opener Abdullah Shafique, who was declared Player of the Match for his second innings knock of 160 in first Test against Sri Lanka at Galle and has amassed 720 runs in his first six Tests, advanced 23 slots to reach 16th position with a Pakistan
record of 671 rating points. The previous best by a Pakistan batter after six Tests was Saeed Ahmed’s 614 rating points and only two batters have ever had more points after six Tests -- Sunil Gavaskar (692) and Donald Bradman (687). Sri Lanka left-arm spinner Prabath Jayasuriya, whose 21 wickets rank him joint-third in terms of most wickets after two Tests, has moved up 11 places to 44th position with 481 rating points, the fourth highest by any bowler after two Tests. Narendra Hirwani (519), Alec Bedser (500) and Bob Massie (494) had higher rating points after two Tests. Pakistan captain Babar Azam’s scores of 119 and 55 in the first Test see him overtake Australia’s Steve Smith to reach a career high third ranking with a career best rating of 874 points. Babar is currently top ranked in both ODIs and T20Is and remains the only batter in the top 10 of all three lists. Fast bowler Shaheen Shah Afridi moved up one place to a career best-equaling third position after grabbing four wickets in the first innings. Hasan Ali and Yasir Shah have gained a slot each to reach 13th and 32nd positions, respectively.
BIRMINGHAM, JUL 27 (IANS): The Indian boxing contingent for the Commonwealth Games here is in turmoil after the accreditation status of the team doctor was changed to accommodate the accreditation for Sandhya Gurung, personal coach of Tokyo Olympics bronze medallist female boxer Lovlina Borgohain. The switch in his accreditation status means that Dr. Karanjit Singh can no longer stay in the Games village and be available for the boxers during training and competition. To attend
competitions, he will have to get a day pass, which may not allow him access to the warm-up area. With boxing being a contact sport, there is a lot of scope for injuries and the presence of a doctor is a must. The Indian boxing team learnt this lesson when boxer Satish suffered an injury and there was no doctor on hand to help him. That is the reason why members of the boxing contingent are worried with the restricted access Dr. Karanjit will get in view of his altered accreditation status.
Players getting ready for the KDFA trial at IG Stadium Kohima on Wednesday. (NP) Correspondent
KO H I M A , J U L 2 7 ( N P N ) : Ko h i m a D i s trict Football Association (KDFA) conducted trial for the upcoming Nagaland Olympics and Paralympic Games 2022 at IG Stadium, here on Wednesday. Out of the total of 67 players who turned up for the trial, 26 players were shortlisted. The selected players will undergo training after which, a set of 20 players would be shortlisted again to make up the final team. Interacting with the player turning up for the trial, Kohima District Football Referee Association (KDFRA) president and KDFA advisor, Roko Angami urged the players to give their best since only
the best would be selected. Expressing his happiness over the huge turnout, Roko said gone were the days when officials would scramble for players to represent the district. He said although the district was not short of players, many of them only played in the colony level and often do not turn up for trials thus missing out opportunities. H e o b s e r ve d t h a t when sufficient players do not turn up, officials had to choose whoever shows up which leads to making weaker teams. “When players turn up in bigger numbers, then officials have the freedom to choose the best and make up a strong team,” Roko said. He added a player
may be good at the game but if they do not turn up for the trial then they would not get selected as proper system procedure that was put into place had to be followed. He reminded the players that when they become a team then they become a family. He urged the players to give their best and give the selectors a tough time in choosing the best. The selected players are registered with KDFA and would be representing Kohima district in upcoming State football events starting with the Nagaland Olympic and Paralympic Games 2022. Team manager for Kohima district team will be Viliebeizo Liezietsu, team coach Zakietuolie Khrodi and Team Physio Zakie.
Luis Suarez in pre-contract agreement to join Nacional
LONDON, JUL 27 (AGENCIES): Luis Suarez has entered a pre-contract agreement to join Uruguayan club Nacional as a free agent, the former Liverpool and Barcelona striker said on Tuesday. The 35-year-old striker started his professional career at Nacional before moving to Dutch side FC Groningen in 2006. “First of all, I wanted to thank you for the love through all the messages that both I and my family have received in recent days, which has been impressive. That touched our hearts at this moment that we had to make a decision,” he wrote on Twitter. “And it was impossible to waste this opportunity of playing again in Nacional and we have a pre-agreement with the club. “In the next few hours, details will be finalised and we hope that the agreement we all want will be reached and that we can all enjoy this new stage and see each other in the coming days.” Suarez is Uruguay’s all-time leading scorer with 68 goals in 132 games since 2007.

BHUBANESWAR, JUL 27 (IANS): Defending champions India U-20 went down to Bangladesh U-20 1-2 in their first match of the SAFF U-20 Championship at the Kalinga Stadium here on Wednesday. Bangladesh striker Md Piash Ahmed Nova scored a brace for the winners, while Gurkirat Singh netted one for India. All the three goals came in the first half. Though India tried to seize the initiative early, Bangladesh proved smarter as they caught the Indian defence unaware with their quick counter-attacks and long balls played with intent behind the Indian defence. They were unlucky to have hit the frame in the 11th minute. Striker Nova pounced on a long ball and lobbed it past an onrushing Indian goalkeeper Zahid Hussain only to agonisingly see it hit the post and bounce back. Even as India tried to play short passes in their effort to build it up, the rivals were content playing it long, and it eventually paid

Sindhu named India’s flagbearer for CWG
BIRMINGHAM, JUL 27 (PTI): Double Olympic medallist badminton ace PV Sindhu was on Wednesday named flagbearer of the Indian contingent for the opening ceremony of the Commonwealth Games to be held here on Thursday. Olympic champion Neeraj Chopra, who was also the defending champion in the Commonwealth Games having won the gold in Gold Coast four years ago, was expected to be the flagbearer. But a groin injury following his silver medal at the World Championships forced him to pullout and the Indian Olympic Association picked Sindhu to be the flagbearer from a three-member shortlist. Tokyo Olympics medallists -- weightlifter Mirabai Chanu and boxer Lovlina Borgohain are the other two athletes, who were also considered before IOA decided to go for Sindhu. “It’s with great plea-
PV Sindhu sure that we announce Sindhu as the flagbearer for Team India,”acting IOA president Anil Khanna said in a release. Sindhu was also the flagbearer at the 2018
Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast. “The other two athletes, Chanu and Borgohain, were immensely deserving too, but we went ahead with Sindhu because
CWG: Chopra disappointed for losing opportunity to be India’s flag-bearer
Neeraj Chopra NEW DELHI, JUL 27 (IANS): Ace India javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra has said he is hurt about not being able to defend his Commonwealth Games gold, adding he is especially disappointed about losing out on the opportunity to be India’s flag-bearer at the opening ceremony in Birmingham on July 28. Chopra, fresh from his silver medal-winning performance at the World Athletics Championships in Eugene (US), was ruled of the Birmingham Games on Tuesday due to a groin injury. In a heartfelt message on social media, Chopra said, “I’m extremely disappointed to inform you all that I will not be able to
represent the country at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham. I had been feeling uncomfortable after the pull I felt in my groin during my fourth throw at the World Championships. “On having it investigated medically yesterday (Tuesday) by a group of doctors here in the US, a minor strain was discovered and I have been advised to undergo rehabilitation and give it rest for the next few weeks ,” wrote Chopra in his message on twitter. Chopra had complained after the historic World Championship silver at Eugene that he felt something in his groin during competition which did not make him feel good. The 24-year-old added that,
keeping in mind his longterm goals, it would be best for him to skip CWG. “I have discussed this with my support team and the IOA (Indian Olympic Association), AFI (Athletic Federation of India) and SAI’s CAIMS, and we’ve collectively decided that keeping my long-term goals in mind, it would be best for me to skip the CWG in order to avoid risking any further aggravation of the injury. “Needless to say, I am hurt about not being able to defend my title and missing out on another opportunity to represent the nation. I am especial y disappointed about losing out on the opportunity to be Team India’s flag-bearer at the opening ceremony, an honour I was looking forward to having in a few days’ time. “For now, I will focus on my rehabilitation and hope to be back in action very soon. I would like to thank the entire country for all the love and support I’ve received over the past few days, and urge you all to join me in cheering on my fellow Team India athletes in Birmingham over the coming weeks,” he added.
she is a two-time Olympic medallist. We expect Sindhu will continue to do well and perform with excellence at these Games.” The 2022 edition of the Commonwealth Games has the largest contingent of female athletes in the history of the Games. “So the IOA sensed fit that we spotlight our commitment to gender equity, in adherence to the spirit of the Olympic Charter, by shortlisting three women athletes for the prestigious role of Team India’s Flagbearer at the 2022 Commonwealth Games,” Khanna said. “We hope that watching Ms Sindhu lead Team India with the Indian flag in her hand at the Opening Ceremony will inspire millions of girls in India to take up sports.” The IOA had a fourmember committee to pick the flagbearer which also included secretary general Rajeev Mehta, treasurer Anandeshwar Panday, and Team India Chef de Mis-
sion Rajesh Bhandari. “We extend our congratulations to her and wish her, and the other athletes of Team India, the very best for the Commonwealth Games,” Mehta said. Team India Chef de Mission at Birmingham, Bhandari said a maximum of 164 participants can take part from the Indian contingent in the Parade of Nations in the Opening Ceremony. “The count of 164 will include athletes and team officials. The final list will be drawn up by this evening, gauging the availability of the athletes,” Bhandari said. A total of 215 athletes from India will be competing at the Commonwealth Games. A former world champion, Sindhu is one of the favourites to win the women’s singles gold medal in Birmingham, having won the silver and bronze in the last two editions at Gold Coast and Glasgow.
NBA will not have vax mandate in 2022-23
NEW YORK, JUL 27 (AGENCIES): After some high-profile vaccine-related absences from games last season, the NBA will not have a COVID-19 vaccine mandate for players in 202223, Yahoo Sports reported Tuesday, citing a memo from the league office it had obtained. The league will “strongly suggest” team personnel stay up-to-date with vaccinations, per the report. Discussions between the league and the NBA Players Association remain ongoing about whether unvaccinated players will be subject to periodic COVID-19 testing during the upcoming season. Last season, the NBA did not require that all players be vaccinated against COVID-19, but unvaccinated players or players who did not receive a booster dose were subject to certain protocols, such as game-day testing. Players were also held accountable for mandates from states with their own vaccination requirements. While the NBA said 95 percent of its players were vaccinated heading into last season, one of the players who was not made frequent news. The Brooklyn Nets’
Kyrie Irving refused to be vaccinated and missed the first three months of the season. Even when Irving did return on Jan. 5, he could only play in road games because of local mandates in New York. He finally played his first home game on March 27, but the Nets were eventually bounced from the first-round of the playoffs by a Boston Celtics sweep. Another player who was not vaccinated was the Philadelphia 76ers’ Matisse Thybulle, who had to miss three games of his team’s first-round playoff series against the Toronto Raptors. While a majority of the most stringent COVID-19 rules and mandates have been lifted throughout the United States, Canada still requires all persons entering the country to have been vaccinated against COVID-19.
NAGALAND POST, DIMAPUR THURSDAY, JULY 28, 2022
IPL’s global dominance in T20 franchise cricket is dangerous, says Adam Gilchrist MELBOURNE, JUL 27 (AGENCIES): Former Australia captain Adam Gilchrist on Wednesday voiced concerns over the Indian Premier League’s (IPL) expanding global footprint, saying the cashrich league’s efforts to monopolise T20 franchise cricket are becoming “a little bit dangerous.” Gilchrist’s comments came in the wake of reports in Australian media saying batter David Warner will skip Australia’s Big Bash League (BBL) this season to participate in a new league in the United Arab Emirates, backed by IPL money. Warner plays for IPL side Delhi Capitals, owned by India’s GMR Group, which owns a team in the Emirati league. The new tournament’s schedule is set to clash with the BBL’s, which runs from December to early-February 2023. IPL team owners have also bought all six franchises of South Africa’s new
Manchester United unveil new signing Eriksen LO N D O N, J U L 2 7 (IANS): Manchester United have unveiled Christian Eriksen as their second signing of the summer on a free transfer. The 30-year-old, who was close to death after suffering a heart attack in the European Championships last summer, returned to football at the start of 2022 with Brentford, and after a successful spell in southwest London, he has agreed a three-year deal to play at Old Trafford. Speaking to the club’s website, Eriksen said the arrival of Erik ten Hag as first team coach had been a factor in his decision. “I think from my career path before the incident in the Euros, the plan wasn’t to go back to the UK at all,” said Eriksen. “I was at Spurs (Tottenham) and then went to Italy (Inter Milan), but now to sit here is something that I didn’t expect, but I’m also very happy that I’m here. It feels good to be here,” he was reported as saying by Xinhua. The talented midfielder said he hadn’t just come to the club “for the logo,” insisting “I want to come here and play.”
Adam Gilchrist domestic T20 league, while three IPL franchise owners -- of Kolkata, Rajasthan and Punjab -- own teams in the Caribbean Premier League. “I think it would almost be commercial suicide for (Cricket Australia) to allow a player like him (Warner) to go head-to-head up against their own competition,” Gilchrist told Australia’s SEN Radio. “They can’t force David Warner to play in the BBL... But to let him then go off -- or another player, let’s not single out Warner because there will be other players on the radar -- it’s all part of this global dominance that these IPL franchises are
starting to create. “... It’s getting a little bit dangerous the grip that it’s having to monopolise that ownership and the ownership of the players and their talents and where they can and can’t play.” Gilchrist said that veteran Warner’s commitment to Australian cricket could not be questioned, but added that younger players could follow in his footsteps. “If he rides off into the sunset and says, ‘Sorry Australian cricket, I’m going to become a gun for hire for my Indian franchise team in various tournaments’, you can’t question him on that,” Gilchrist said. “That’s his prerogative and he’s done everything he needs to get the profile and get that market value. It’s the new younger player coming in that starts to make those noises where it’ll be really challenging.” The IPL did not immediately respond to an emailed request for comment.
Neymar could face jail term, hefty fine for discrepancies
Neymar PARIS, JUL 27 (IANS): Paris St. Germain striker Neymar could face a jail term of two years or more and a fine totalling 10m euros for discrepancies in his transfer from Brazilian giants Santos to La Liga heavyweight Barcelona nine years back. While Neymar enjoyed a lot of success at Barcelona, spending four years there before moving to French giants PSG in 2017, the ghost of his transfer to the Spanish club has haunted him all along and a final hearing is scheduled in the Barcelona court in October. A report in Barca Universal said on Wednesday that Neymar’s signing at Barcelona involved a lot of “corrupt dealings on the part of thenclub president Sandro Rossell”, who “colluded” with the Brazilian footballer’s father and agent, and a for-
mer Santos FC director to facilitate the deal. DI S, the c om pa ny which reportedly owned 40 per cent rights of Neymar at the time of his transfer to the La Liga giants, lodged a complaint seven years ago, claiming they had been “defrauded by the player, his family and Barcelona”, the report said. The case is ongoing and the final hearing will take place on October 17 where Neymar will go on trial for the corruption case a month before the FIFA World Cup 2022 kicks off in Qatar. The report added that “the prosecution wants the court to hand him a two-year prison sentence and a fine of 10 million euros”. However, DIS, have reportedly said they want a “much harsher punishment for the Brazilian”. They want Neymar to serve a five-year sentence and also be banned from playing football for the same duration. The case dates back to 2013 when Barca claimed they paid 57m euros to sign Neymar from Santos, but it later emerged the transfer fee was in the region of 80m euros, or more. Neymar’s father was said to have received a big percentage of the final fee through a company he owned.
Stage set for CWG: 6.5K athletes to compete; opening ceremony today BIRMINGHAM, JUL 27 (IANS): In all 6,500 sportspersons and team officials from a recordequalling 72 nations and territories will gather here in Birmingham and West Midlands region of England for the 22nd edition of the Commonwealth Games which start on Thursday, hoping to claim silverware from the 280 medal events to be contested across 19 sports. The second biggest multi-discipline sports extravaganza after the Olympics, the Commonwealth Games of Birmingham 2022 has competitors from 72 nations and territories entered to compete, equalling the record held by the 2002 edition held at Manchester, around a one-andhalf-hour drive from here. The sports will open with a gala opening ceremony on Thursday with competitions set to start early on Friday. The Birmingham 2 0 2 2 C o m m o n we a l t h Games are unique as for the first time in a multinational, multi-discipline sports event, there will be more events in offing for women competitors than their male counter-
parts. Birmingham will have 136 women’s events as compared to 134 events for men. There will be 10 mixed team events. While 3x3 basketball makes its Commonwealth Games debut, cricket in the form of women’s T20 returns to the competition schedule after the 1998 edition in Kuala Lumpur. All in all 61 nations have won medals at the Commonwealth Games so far and the organisers are hoping that there will be a few more countries bagging their maiden medals in 2022. However, Indian fans may have to keep their hopes in check this time as the country’s overall medals tally takes a hit because of the non-inclusion
of shooting and archery. India had bagged 66 medals in the previous edition of the Commonwealth Games held at Gold Coast in Australia and shooting contributed 16 of them including seven of the 26 gold medals that India won. The Indians will be participating in 15 sports disciplines in Birmingham. Though the Indians are expecting to bag a few medals in para-sports and athletics to make up for the shortfall, it may still not be enough. However, if they manage to equal their Gold Coast haul of 66 medals, it would mark a huge uptick for the contingent that has already lost a sure-shot medal winner in javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra, who will not be defending
the gold medal he won in Gold Coast. Chopra had to pull out of the Commonwealth Games due to an injury that he suffered during the Athletics World Championships in Oregon, the USA where he won India’s maiden silver medal in World Championships despite a below-par overall performance. With shooting out of the equation, India are expected to bag a rich haul of medals from wrestling, weightlifting, badminton, table tennis, squash, and athletics. By a conservative estimate, the Indians should cross the half-century mark though equalling their best-ever medal haul of 100-plus achieved in the 2010 edition in New Delhi
may prove a big ask for the 215-odd sportspersons that will participate in Birmingham. Besides shooting and archery, other sports that will be missing from the sports programme in Birmingham are artistic swimming, basketball (5x5), bowling, fencing, rowing and water polo. Australia are expected to dominate the games and the medals table as they have done for the last many editions. They have won 2,419 medals in the Commonwealth Games, which had started in 1930 as the British Empire Games, and are expected to add around 200 medals to that tally. Hosts England are hoping to use the home conditions to their advantage and give Australia a run for their money. Canada and South Africa too will be hoping to improve their tally from Gold Coast and give England and Australia a tough fight in swimming, cycling and gymnastics. Competitions will be held in 15 venues spread around the West Midlands region with track cycling to be held at the Lee Valley Velodrome in London.
The Indian Sepaktakraw men’s team won gold medal in Sepaktakraw Regu division 1 in the ongoing 35th Kings World Cup Bangkok, Thailand. The Indian team consisted of Viseyie Koso from Nagaland, who was the captain of the winning team. The other members were Arun, Ashish, Pawan Kumar from Delhi and Shiva from Andhra Pradesh.
