Maha political crisis:

Fadnavis meets Gov, demands floor test MUMBAI, JUN 28 (PTI): After waiting in the wings in the over week-long political drama sparked off by Shiv Sena minister Eknath Shinde’s rebellion, BJP leader Devendra Fadnavis on Tuesday night met Maharashtra Governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari, and requested him to ask the Uddhav Thackeray government to prove its majority in the Assembly. Fadnavis claimed that the Shiv Sena-NCP-Congress coalition government seemed to be in minority as 39 Sena MLAs who belong to the Shinde faction have said they do not support the government. “Therefore, we handed over a letter to the Governor, requesting him to ask the government to prove its majority through a floor test in the House,” he told reporters.

environmental issue associated with waste generation, inadequate collection, segregation, disposal and treatment of waste. Kire said presently the urban areas of Nagaland generate about 4985.94 tonnes of solid waste per day. He said that the common practice of disposal of waste in Nagaland was by collecting of waste and dumping at the dumping site without any treatment or segregation posing a major environmental concern especially single-use plastic items. He said the effort to keep the towns and cities clean becomes a huge task. He said the ULBs, which have been entrusted the mammoth task, continue to provide adequate sanitation services to the citizens despite obstacles.

Call for oil exploration to boost State’s economy Staff Reporter

DIMAPUR, JUN 28 (NPN): Soil and Water Conservation & Geology and Mining minister V Kashiho Sangtam stressed that it was high time that the economy of Nagaland received a boost through exploration and production (E&P) of petroleum. In his keynote address at a panel discussion on “Oil and natural gas exploration and production in Nagaland: It’s relevance today” at Dimapur Government College (DGC) here on Tuesday, Kashiho described oil and natural gas as economically viable resource

and a clear roadmap should be prepared for an early resumption of oil exploration in the State. He also recalled the oil exploration in the 1970s and referred to the public interest litigation (PIL) filed by Lotha Hoho at Gauhati High Court in 2012.

Information Technology & Communication (ITC&C), Science & Technology and New & Renewable Energy (NRE) adviser Mmhonlumo Kikon said the Central government had proposed a tripartite agreement among the Centre, Assam and Nagaland gov-

ernments for oil exploration in the State and discussions were on in this regard. He also insisted that whatever oil exploration was being undertaken in the disputed border areas, the royalty should be shared equally between the Assam and Nagaland. He mentioned that chief minister Neiphiu Rio was categorical that Nagaland should be paid oil royalty in Assam-Nagaland belt where Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) was carrying out exploration work. This, he said, would also be a part of the proposed tripartite agreement. Mmhonlumo said the agreement drafted by

the Union Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas (MoPNG), to which the State government had given its written submissions for certain addition and omission was in the process of finalisation. He said the State government was very clear that the Centre could not “challenge” the special provision of Article 371 (A) of the Constitution of India. Mmhonlumo clarified that if the State had to start oil exploration, then it had to be with collaboration with MoPNG and involve revenue sharing and royalty for landowners.

government could take the decision to create Niuland and Chumoukedima districts. The minister credited the state chief minister, all the four MLAs of Dimapur district and state machineries for taking the important decision. Jacob asserted that the all the five legislators would be working very closely and would be monitoring the

socio-economic and political impacts that may grow in three districts of Dimapur, Chumoukedima and Niuland. “…and for that we need the cooperation of the people of three districts,” Jacob said. Minister also said that everyone should participate and divide the responsibilities between the people and government for development to take place. (Cont’d on p-8)

The two accused- Riaz and Ghouse. (PTI)

UDAIPUR, JUN 28 (PTI): Two men with a cleaver murdered a tailor here and posted videos online that said they are avenging an insult to Islam, triggering stray cases of violence in the Rajasthan city, a part of which was placed under curfew. Prohibitory orders ban-

ning people from assembling were clamped across the state for a month and mobile internet services suspended for the next 24 hours. Two motorcycles were set ablaze in Hathipole area and a mob pelted stones at a mosque in Dhan Mandi, before it was dispersed by police. The Home Ministry dispatched a team from the National Investigation Agency (NIA) to Udaipur, officials said. Police arrested the two accused identified as Riaz Akhtari and Ghouse Mohammad. The assailants entered

his shop in Dhan Mandi posing as customers. As the tailor took the measurements Akhtari attacked him with a cleaver, nearly severing his neck. The other man shot the brutal murder with his mobile phone. In another video, the alleged assailant declared that they had “beheaded” the man and went on to threaten Prime Minister Narendra Modi, saying their knife will get him as well. Kanhaiya Lal, the tailor, was recently arrested by the local police over some remarks made on social media by him.

NEW DELHI, JUN 28 (PTI): With the steep rise in coronavirus cases again, the Union Health Ministry on Wednesday wrote a fresh letter to various states and urged them to take preventive measures ahead of festival season. India recorded 11,793 new coronavirus infections, pushing the country’s tally to 4,34,18,839, while the active cases rose to 96,700, the Union Health Ministry said on Tuesday. The death toll climbed to 5,25,047 with 27 new fatalities, data updated at 8 am by the ministry stated. In a letter to most of

the states reporting higher number of COVID cases, the Union health sec-retary said to minimise fresh Covid infections, there’s need to focus on five-fold strategy of testing, tracking, treating, vaccinating and adhering to Covid appropriate behaviour in view of upcoming festive season when states are likely to witness mass gatherings. The Centre asked states and Union territories to ensure that people taking part in mass gatherings and undertaking pilgrimage are asymptomatic and preferably fully vaccinated against COVID-19.

FOLLOW US ON

DIMAPUR, JUN 28 (NPN): Nagaland unit National People’s Party (NPP) functionaries comprising of 16 state and five district-level office bearers and workers resigned “en masse” on Tuesday. However, on the other hand, NPP unit issued a clarification claiming that the party was to suspend the “dissident members” for their anti-party activities. Addressing the media NPP state general secretary (political affairs) Ricky Ozukum said that they were compelled to resign with immediate effect as they had lost faith in the party’s State

leadership led by president Dr Andrew Ahoto Sema. He claimed that around 80% more party office-bearers and workers would be resigning from across the State. Ozukum clarified that they had not resigned to join another political party but admitted of having received invitations from regional and national parties in the State that were planning to expand their reach further. He assured that the decision to join any political party would be decided keeping in mind the political ideology of that party. Signatories in the resignation letter included NPP national secretary Lima Longkumer

and 15 other State level office bearers and five district level office bearers, including presidents of Mokokchung, Tuensang, Mon, Longleng, and Kiphire district units.

NPP unit clarifies

In a clarification, State NPP unit said it was totally flabbergasted over the unconstitutional manner in which some “handful and dissident members” of the party announced through a press conference about the mass resignation. NPP claimed that the handful of members, who had resigned, did not even comprise 2% of the total party strength contrary to their claims that 80% of them had quit the party.

Rather, NPP said they (dissidents) were to be suspended from the party for carrying out anti-party activities. Having understood their ulterior motive, NPP said the national leaders took cognizance and advised the State president for complete overhaul and to reorganize the party rank and file by weeding out the negative elements. With regard to resignation of district presidents of Mon, Tuensang, Kiphire, Longleng and Mokokchung, NPP said besides failing to carry out their duties and activities, they also failed to conduct membership drives and rather chose to hold the

post of president to “enjoy undue benefits.” It was for this reason, NPP said that the state president, under the directive of the national president, reorganized and appointed new convenors and district presidents of these districts. Similarly, NPP said some leaders of the frontal bodies including NPYF and women wing were also relieved of their responsibilities due to “non-performance”. NPP said that the resignation was a welcome sign for the party to strengthen and grow at all levels under the leadership of the State president, Dr. Andrew Ahoto Sema.

Health secretary Rajesh Bhushan said mass gatherings in context of various festivities as well as yatras are likely to be held in different parts of the country in the coming months, and that such congregations may potentially facilitate transmission of infectious diseases, including COVID-19. While the trajectory of COVID-19 cases has declined significantly from levels that were ob-served in earlier part of this year, a few states and UTs across the country are witnessing a sus-tained upswing in the cases currently. Bhushan said it was

essential that the gains made so far by collaborative efforts of central and state governments are not lost and timely necessary public health steps are taken to minimise the risk of increased COVID-19 transmission. Further adequate publicity and arrangement for testing should be done across multiple locations. He underlined that public meetings, prayers, seating and lodging arrangements on the route and halting points should be made in outdoor or well-ventilated areas with provision of thermal screening and hand washing.

Ban on single-use plastic items from Jul 1: Environment Minister

NEW DELHI, JUN 28 (PTI): Union Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav on Tuesday said the government has given enough time to the industry and the general public to prepare for the ban on single-use plastic (SUP) items and it hopes for everyone’s cooperation in implementing it from July 1. Environment ministry officials said the notification to phase out 19 SUP items was issued under the Environment Protection Act (EPA) and any violation will invite punitive action, including a fine or a jail term, detailed under Section 15 of the Act. “The notification to

phase out the 19 identified SUP items by July 1, 2022 was issued in August 2021. We have given enough time (to prepare for the phasing out of SUP items). We gave them (those dealing in SUP items) certainty for the future, made them understand and the majority of them support it,” he said in response to a question on some industry representatives saying they are not ready for the ban. “I have met the industry representatives and the government hopes for their cooperation in phasing out single-use plastic items,” he said. Professor Kuolie mentioned that we ought to preserve our language, and only through these stories we could preserve our culture and past. Though Tenyidie was complex, he said that we are yet to fully understand all the intricacies and reminded the gathering that God’s greatest gift to us was our language. He further remarked that we were taught and studied in English, a foreign language; and how it

had ‘led us away’ from our native roots and therefore advocated on the need to speak Tenyidie– that there was a need to preserve it. In the publisher’s note, Vishü Rita Krocha, lauded the author for the book and the challenges she encountered and overcame while writing the book. This was the first book published in Tenyidie under Penthrill Publication, a major milestone. Krocha mentioned that every language had its unique expression which when translated could not be expressed fully and high-

lighted on the importance to preserve the living languages before they disappeared. Earlier, programme was chaired by Thepfulhouzo Tsürho, invocation pronounced by CRC Rüsoma pastor, Rev. Khrieo Mezhü. Book dedication was carried out by senior pastor, Cross Wonder Church Kohima, Rev. Ketouzo Theünuo, while vote of thanks was proposed by pastor, CRC Chiephobozou, Pavi Pao. NMYO condemns alleged assault on 5 youth in Kohima DIMAPUR: New Market Youth Organisation (NMYO) has expressed “anguish at the barbaric and inhuman act perpetrated on five innocent youth of the colony by a group of ruffians”, at box cutting, near World War II Cemetery Kohima on June 24. In a press release, NMYO president, Andrew Tepa informed that the incident occurred when six youth from Dairy Farm, Lirie and New Reserve Colony were “sniffing contraband marijuana (Ganja) at the Box cutting and were found to be provoking passers-by.” NMYO claimed the five New Market youth who were on a regular stroll to the Raj Bhavan area were confronted by the youth who under a substance abuse “trip” began “thrashing them without any rhyme and reason, causing grievous injuries.”

It said some of the public arrived at the scene and rescued the youth and apprehended the perpetrators, who were handed over to the police. Claiming that three of the accused happened to be juvenile, NMYO questioned the “parenting of the children” and pointed out that of late, Box cutting has become a notorious den where drinks, drug abuse and immoral activities took place. Pointing out that although the location fell within the parameters of a high security zone, it said in September 2015, “a promising young footballer” was also “beaten to death by nine youth at the same location.” Further, NMYO urged upon the district administration to install proper lighting in the area and initiate regular police patrolling.

CT Ravi hits out at Cong’s opposition to Agneepath

Correspondent

IMPHAL, JUN 28: BJP national general secretary CT Ravi on Tuesday accused the Congress of making an issue out of a non-issue over the Agneepath scheme. Addressing a press conference at BJP Manipur Pradesh office in Imphal today, Ravi alleged that it was the second nature of the Congress to oppose whatever BJP does. The general secretary said that the opposition was doing politics on national security sidelining the national interest. He asserted that the BJP government at the Centre under leadership of Narendra Modi was walking on the path of reform, performance and transformation. The Union government unveiled the Agneepath scheme under which youth aged 17 and a half and 23 will be recruited in the Army, Navy and Air Force on contractual basis for four years. Ravi said “The

The scheme will transform the country.” “It is very unfortunate that the Congress is trying to politicize the Agneepath scheme keeping behind the interest of the nation,” he said. He claimed that youths across the country welcomed the new initiative of the Central government while terming it as a promising scheme. However, some people with vested interest, including the Congress, were trying to destabilize the country by spreading

Tripura CM likely to take oath as MLA after prez poll, says Speaker

Tripura CM Manik Saha celebrating his by-poll victory. AGARTALA, JUN 28 (PTI): Three newly-elected MLAs of Tripura took oath on Tuesday, but Chief Minister Manik Saha who also won the June 23 byelection to become a legislator was not sworn in by the speaker. Congress’s Sudip Roy Barman, who won the Agartala seat, and BJP’s M a i l n a D a s ( Ju b a r a jnagar) and Swapna Das (Surma) were swron in as MLAs by Speaker Ratan Chakraborty at the assembly’s lobby. Though the chief minister, who won the bypoll from Town Bardowali, was present at the programme, he did not take the oath. “Since Chief Minister Manik Saha is also a Rajya Sabha member, he has to leave one post. Once he decides, he will take the oath. I don’t think Saha will quit

as an MLA because he has been made the chief minister,” the speaker told reporters. He said the presidential election is slated to be held on July 18. “It appears that the chief minister is likely to take oath after the presidential elections. The decision will be taken by the BJP high command,” the speaker said. Saha, a Rajya Sabha member, was sworn as the chief minister of Tripura after Biplab Kumar Deb abruptly resigned on May 14. After being appointed chief minister, Saha has six months’ time to become a member of the assembly, as per the rules. M e a n w h i l e, t h e CPI(M)-led Left Front boycotted the programme, alleging widespread post-poll violence.

false propaganda against the scheme. They raised objections without digesting the details of the scheme, he alleged. He claimed that Congress is a party which was not popular among the people across the country. The results of the recently concluded elections to the Manipur Legislative Assembly in which people gave their mandate to the BJP was a clear example. The results showed that the people of Manipur were fed up with the Congress and its ideology,he claimed . He accused the Con-

gress of trying to build its lost image by giving obstacles to the developmental activities of the BJP-led government both in the state and the Centre. The national general secretary claimed that the people of the state have faith with the BJP’s “double engines” government as it gave a new ray of hope and progress. They knew that BJP showed what it promised with works, unlike the lip service that Congress has been indulging for decades. BJP always committed to leading the nation to a new era of progress and people knew it as the country witnessed a remarkable change in all sectors since the BJP came to power in the country eight years ago. The government under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi was committed to the ideals of “Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas, Sabka Vishwas, Sabka Prayaas” to build a new India, the general secretary claimed.

GUWAHATI, JUN 28 (PTI): The overall flood situation in Assam showed signs of improvement on Tuesday with most of the rivers showing a receding trend even though 21 lakh people remained affected by the deluge and most localities of Silchar town in Cachar district still under water for more than a week, officials said. The death toll due to this year’s floods have increased to 134 with five more deaths recorded in the last 24 hours, while one person was missing, as per a bulletin issued by Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA). Most of the rivers were showing a receding trend, except for Kopili and Barak, which were flowing above the danger level in Nagaon and Barak Valley respectively. SILCHAR/HAILAKANDI (ASSAM), JUNE 28 (PTI): The bustling Silchar town in Assam is reeling under the worst floods in its memory for over a week and its citizens are faced with the problem of cremating the dead as the grounds meant for it are inundated. Families who have lost their members during the flood are also unable to take the bodies to the crematoria because of the high flood waters and the Cachar district administration is also unable to reach them. NAGALAND POST, DIMAPUR WEDNESDAY, JUNE 29, 2022

Fadnavis meets Shah, Nadda on next Return and talk to me: Uddhav to rebel MLAs course of action over Shiv Sena rebels

MUMBAI/GUWAHATI, JUN 28 (PTI/IANS): Striking a re-conciliatory note a day after divesting the portfolios of all nine rebel Shiv Sena ministers and against the backdrop of the Supreme Court granting relief to breakaway MLAs, party chief Uddhav Thackeray on Tuesday appealed to the dissidents camping in Guwahati to return to Mumbai and talk to him, saying it’s not “too late”. Thackeray’s offer to mend fences comes against the backdrop of controversial statements made by some Shiv Sena leaders, especially Sanjay Raut whose “40 bodies without soul” statement had caused a flutter. “It is not too late. I appeal to you to return and sit with me and remove the confusion (created by your actions) among Shiv Sainiks and the public,” a statement by Thackeray’s aide quoted him as saying. “If you return and face

Uddhav Thackeray

me, some way could be found. As the party president and family head, I still care for you,” he said. Interestingly, rebel group leader Eknath Shinde daring the party to disclose the names of some of the MLAs camping in Guwahati reportedly in touch with the party leadership. In a setback to the MVA government, the Supreme Court on Monday kept in abeyance the disqualification proceedings of 16 of the dissident MLAs before the Maharashtra Assembly Deputy Speaker till

July 11. Also, it refused to pass any interim order on the state government’s plea that there should not be any floor test in the Assembly. Over the last eight days since Shinde raised the banner of revolt, the ranks of the dissidents swelled gradually with more Sena MLAs and even ministers crossing over to the rebel camp. The rebellion has rocked the Shiv Sena and threatened the survival of the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government comprising Shiv Sena, NCP, and Congress. Thackeray said family members of some rebel MLAs in Guwahati are in touch with him and the party and have conveyed the legislators’ feelings to him. “You have been stuck in Guwahati for the last few days. New information is coming out about you every day, and many of you are also in touch. In your heart, you are still with the Shiv Sena,” he said.

Amid the growing rancour between the Uddhav Thackeray faction and the Shinde camp, Shivsainiks loyal to the Thackerays staged protests and even damaged the office of a dissident MLA. The dissident camp had disapproved the remarks such as “40 bodies without a soul” made by Raut. The Shiv Sena has claimed that at least 20 MLAs from the rebel camp are in touch with the party. The Sena chief also said the honour bestowed to the rebel legislators by Shiv Sena cannot be accorded by anyone else and urged them to come forward and speak to him. As the rebellion saga unfolded, Thackeray had last week made an emotional appeal saying he was ready to step down if Shinde and MLAs who are supporting him declared that they don’t want him to continue as CM.

I’ll be in Mumbai soon; 50 MLAs are with us: Shinde

Rebel Shiv Sena MLA Eknath Shinde said on Tuesday that he will be in Mumbai soon, adding that he is accompanied by 50 MLAs who have come on their own. Speaking to mediapersons outside the Radisson Blu hotel in Guwahati, Shinde said, “We are with the Sena and I’ll be in Mumbai soon.” He added, “50 MLAs are here on their own. No MLA is suppressed here, and everyone is happy. The MLAs are with us at the Guwahati hotel.” He also said that if Sena in Mumbai claims that it is in touch with MLAs in Guwahati, it should reveal their names too. “We are in Sena and will take the party ahead. We are taking forward Balasaheb Thackeray’s Hindutva and there should be no doubt about this,” he said.

Devendra Fadnavis leaves after meeting JP Nadda amid the political crisis in Maharashtra, Tuesday. (PTI)

NEW DELHI, JUN 28 (PTI): Former Maharashtra chief minister Devendra Fadnavis met Union minister Amit Shah and BJP president J P Nadda here on Tuesday to discuss the party’s next course of action amid the spiralling political crisis in the state threatening the 3-party MVA government’s existence. Fadnavis was joined by BJP MP and senior lawyer Mahesh Jethmalani in the meeting with the home

minister, sources said. They are believed to have explored various options available for the party and deliberated on their legal feasibility as the BJP works to recapture power in Maharashtra with the help of rebel Sena MLAs and several independent lawmakers. After meeting Shah, Fadnavis drove to Nadda’s residence and briefed him about the unfolding political developments in the western state. Earlier in the day, he ar-

rived in the national capital to discuss the issue with the party’s top brass. Around 39 rebel Sena MLAs and at least 10 independent legislators from the state have lodged themselves at a five star hotel in Assam in their bid to bring down the CM Uddhav Thackeray-led government. The BJP has denied any role in the rebellion but Fadnavis is being seen to be playing a key role in working out a post-MVA dispensation which he may head with support from the Sena rebels. BJP sources have maintained that any concrete outline of the next government has not been worked out but added that Eknath Shinde and other key members of the group will be suitably accommodated in case their party comes to power. Shinde may be made deputy chief minister in such an eventuality.

Opposition, media bodies condemn Zubair’s arrest; BJP points to ‘chequered past’ NEW DELHI, JUN 28 (PTI): The Opposition and media bodies on Tuesday condemned the arrest of Alt News co-founder Mohammed Zubair and demanded his immediate release, even as the BJP said he had a “chequered past” and posted tweets which hurt religious feelings of a large section of the Hindu society. A group of activists also said it was “absolute hypocrisy” of the government that his arrest came on a day India committed at the G7 Summit to defend democratic principles and protect the freedom of expression. The fact-checking website’s co-founder was arrested by the Special Cell of the Delhi Police on Monday on charges of promoting enmity between dif-

ferent groups on grounds of religion and deliberate acts to outrage religious feeling of the Indian Penal Code. A Delhi cour t on Tuesday extended by four days the custodial interrogation of Zubair in a case related to an “objectionable tweet” he had posted in 2018 against a Hindu deity. The Editors Guild of India and the Press Club of India described the arrest of Zubair on charges of hurting religious sentiments as “extremely disturbing” and demanded his immediate release. Both the media bodies pointed out that the action against Zubair came on a day when India joined G7 and four other countries to protect free speech, “online and offline”. The Mumbai Press Club also condemned the arrest of Zubair.

Sachin Pilot ignores Gehlot taunt

TONK (RAJASTHAN), JUNE 28 (ANI): Rajasthan Congress leader Sachin Pilot on Monday hit out at Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot over his remarks on his rebellion of 2020 that had brought the state government on the verge of collapse. This came after CM Gehlot on Saturday alleged that Sachin Pilot was in connivance with BJP in 2020 to topple the Congress government in Rajasthan. The Chief Minister said that Union Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat was “hand-in-glove” with Sachin Pilot during the revolt by Congress MLAs against his government two years ago. However, Sachin Pilot took no offence to his statement and said that he was called ‘Nakara’, and ‘Nikamma’ earlier too. “Earlier also, CM Ashok Gehlot had said many things about me like ‘Nakara’, ‘Nikamma’. I don’t take his statements otherwise as he is experienced, senior and a father figure… Right now, my focus is to bring back our govt in the state,” the Congress leader told media persons. He further added, “A few days back, at an event in Delhi, Rahul Gandhi had praised my patience level. If a leader like Rahul Gandhi is appreciating my patience level then I think no one should unnecessarily get disturbed by his statement and take it in the right spirit.” Sachin Pilot was a contender for the Chief Minister’s post after Congress’ victory in the 2018 assembly polls. But he was persuaded by Rahul Gandhi to become Deputy Chief Minister of Rajasthan. His political differences with Gehlot started since, which Pilot played down in the state.

Muhammad Zubair being taken to the Patiala House Courts, following his arrest by special cell of Delhi Police. (PTI)

Criticising the arrests, All India Progressive Women’s Association member Kavita Krishnan alleged it was “absolute hypocrisy” of the prime minister to “use the Constitution of India as window dressing” while he is acting in revenge against activists and journalists who is holding his

party accountable. Aakar Patel, chair of board for Amnesty International India, said the Indian authorities are targeting Zubair for his crucial work to combat the rise in fake news and disinformation and call out the discrimination against minorities. To questions about

Zubair’s arrest and opposition leaders’ protest against it, BJP spokesperson Gaurav Bhatia said one cannot become a factchecker only by proclaiming himself to be one. He has a chequered past and has posted tweets which have hurt religious feelings of a large section of Hindu society, Bhatia said. Criticising Zubair, Bhatia said if somebody is doing fact-check, then he cannot be selective. If he posts content which suits some political party or a community, then he is not objective, Bhatia claimed. The Opposition condemned Zubair’s arrest and hit out at the ruling BJP for it. The Congress said the “coward” government is sending out a message to those who expose its “fake

news”. Congress spokesperson Supriya Shrinate said without getting into the legalities, the big message by the BJP-led Centre is that the perpetrators of hate speeches would get political patronage and will be out either on bail or otherwise, and people who report that will be behind bars. She said those spreading hate are becoming leaders of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), while those speaking out against their hate are being put behind bars. Left parties also hit out at the government over Zubair’s arrest, asking it how those who spread hate are free, and someone who exposes them is behind bars. The parties demanded his immediate release. West Bengal Chief

Minister Mamata Banerjee also lashed out at the Centre over the arrests of Zubair and social activist Teesta Setalvad for “trying to expose the truth” and wondered how those who spread hatred among communities are roaming free. Prominent Muslim organisation Jamiat Ulemae-Hind on Tuesday termed as “discriminatory” the arrest of the Alt News co-founder and demanded that the government take “fair action” in the matter respecting the country’s reputation at the international level.

Jamiat president Maulana Mahmood Madani also wrote to Union Home Minister Amit Shah, saying “the discriminatory nature” of the functioning of law enforcement agencies is condemnable. Zubair was produced before court on the expiry of his one-day custodial interrogation. The police told the court that the accused did not cooperate with the investigating agency and that custodial interrogation was required to gather information regarding the device from which the tweet was made by the accused.

Drugs destroying NE youth

T

hat the Kohima-Dimapur stretch of the NH 29 is among the major route used for trafficking drugs and other psychotropic substances from Moreh and Manipur to other parts of India is not a new discovery. Most of the drugs in northeast excluding Sikkim, come from Bangladesh and Myanmar. Drugs including opium, heroin, methamphetamine and many more are smuggled from Myanmar into the northeast. Moreh (Manipur), Champai (Mizoram), Dimapur (Nagaland), and Guwahati (Assam) have become the nucleus of drug trafficking industry in India’s northeast. Chemicals called precursors or essential chemicals are smuggled out of India from India and drugs such as heroin , amphetamine and other combinations etc. Chemicals from India help make heroin in Myanmar, which in turn has devastated India’s northeast with the help of venal druglords, politicians, insurgent outfits and even some elements of the armed forces. Drugs produced in the notorious ‘Golden Triangle’ enter India through Mizoram, Manipur, and Nagaland from Bhamo, Lashio, and Mandalay in Myanmar. Also, drugs illicitly manufactured in India and used for refining heroin travel through the same route for trade. The trafficking route bifurcates; one channel moves northwards through Moreh in Manipur while other moves southwards to enter Champai in Mizoram. The other route through which illicit drugs and opiates are smuggled into India is through Mizoram originating at Champhai is very well connected to cities in Myanmar that include Tiddim and Mandalay. Almost 80 per cent of the world’s production of opiates originate from the “Golden Crescent” and the “Golden Triangle” area, now called “Golden Pentagon” with the induction of Vietnam-Cambodia and Nagaland-Manipur in Northeast India. Several countries of South Asia are strategically located on the heroin trafficking routes - India, Bangladesh, Nepal, Sri Lanka. Nearly seven per cent of the population in Mizoram, consume opioids, followed by Nagaland (6.5 per cent), Arunachal Pradesh (5.7 per cent) and Sikkim (5.1 per cent), according to the AIIMS report. Opioids are a broad group of painrelieving drugs supposed to be used under strict medical supervision. Unchecked use of opiods has serious health implications. Drug seizures by police at Dimapur and mostly at nearby Karbi Anglong indicate that trafficking is going on at a huge scale unimaginable till a few years back. Most shocking is the revelation and as published in this newspaper, that teen aged school children and minors as young as 10 are using drugs. This only exposes how dangerous the situation has become. The magnitude of the quantity of drugs especially heroin, prove that the north east region is a major transit zone of trafficking of various illicit drugs and heroin. According to Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) during January 2019 the total quantity of heroin seized along the Moreh, Dimapur and Khatkhati route was around 700 grams or worth around Rs.3.5 crore. During January 2022 the total quantity of heroin seized on the same route was nearly 3 kgs and worth around Rs.15 crore. The seizures in 2021 were notable as quantities were huge. From July to October 2021, a total of approximately 20 kgs of heroin was seized by police mostly in Karbi Anglong and a few from Dimapur. The drug trade in proliferating which has devastated states in the north east. The situation calls for declaration of total war on illicit drugs and psychotropic substances if the future generation is to be saved.

DailyDevotion Held by the Grip of God

I press on, that I may lay hold of that for which Christ Jesus has also laid hold of me. —Philippians 3:12

Never choose to be a worker for God, but once God has placed His call on you, woe be to you if you “turn aside to the right hand or to the left” (Deuteronomy 5:32). We are not here to work for God because we have chosen to do so, but because God has “laid hold of” us. And once He has done so, we never have this thought, “Well, I’m really not suited for this.” What you are to preach is also determined by God, not by your own natural leanings or desires. Keep your soul steadfastly related to God, and remember that you are called not simply to convey your testimony but also to preach the gospel. Every Christian must testify to the truth of God, but when it comes to the call to preach, there must be the agonizing grip of God’s hand on you— your life is in the grip of God for that very purpose. How many of us are held like that? Never water down the Word of God, but preach it in its undiluted sternness. There must be unflinching faithfulness to the Word of God, but when you come to personal dealings with others, remember who you are— you are not some special being created in heaven, but a sinner saved by grace. “Brethren, I do not count myself to have apprehended; but one thing I do…I press toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus” (Philippians 3:13-14).

NAGALAND POST, DIMAPUR WEDNESDAY, JUNE 29, 2022

R

oe v Wade, the most gruesome SCOTUS ruling in modern-day America which had guaranteed constitutional protection to terminate an unborn lives from the mother’s womb as a result of which an estimated 60 million unborn lives had already been denied the right to life since the ruling in 1973, is now finally overruled. With some of America’s most powerful political institutions including the Washington establishment, Mainstream Media and Liberal forces in full throttle to secure Roe v Wade, nobody in our generation would ever dream of seeing the overruling of Roe v Wade in our lifetime. But thanks to President Donald Trump who had completely overhauled the United States Supreme Court (SCOTUS) by appointing three Conservative Pro-Life Justices during his eventful four years presidency, the three Trump’s appointees brave conservative Justices joined by three more legendary Conservative Justices overcome all odds and delivered a 6-3 verdict on the Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization case on June 24, 2022,

Goodbye Roe, life has won! to throw Roe v Wade into a dustbin of history, and thus ensuring that Conservative and evangelical Christians, belonging to both Catholics and Protestants, are finally rewarded for championing the cause for Right to Life for the last five decades and for overwhelmingly voting for President Donald Trump in 2016. In effect, President Donald Trump remains the most consequential US President in modern history and the 2016 US Presidential Election became the most consequential election in the modern history of America. It was on January 22, 1973, the then Liberal majority SCOTUS delivered a 7-2 ruling in favour of Roe, a pseudonym of the plaintiff Norma McCorvey, to “provides a fundamental right to privacy that protects a pregnant woman’s liberty...” with the then two Conservative Justices William Rehnquist and Byron White on the historic side of dissent. Dissenting the Roe v Wade ruling Rehnquist, who went on to become Chief Justice of the SCOTUS, had stated: “While a party may vindicate his own constitutional rights, he may

not seek vindication for the rights of others.” While the majority of the bench in the SCOTUS in 1973 may have favoured the constitutional protection for the right to abortion, the conscience of the nation remains with the dissenting words/voice of Rehnquist reminding the world that the right to abortion denies the right to life of the unborn. Roe v Wade did not end the movement for the Right to Life and the issue remain within the political and public discourse in America and the world. Roe v Wade was founded on two fundamental constitutional flaws. One, the imposing of federal restrictions on the question of what is legal had undermined the autonomy and power of the states and the spirit of the federation. The debate as of now is not whether abortion should or not be made legal (Hope the SCOTUS will debate on this in near future) but whether Constitution confers the right to abortion. Second, the ruling deprived the Right to Life as enshrined in the fourteenth amendment of the Bill of Rights which guarantees to person the right to life and

liberty. This person’s right to life is extended to the life of the unborn in the mother’s womb. Roe v Wade was not a controversial ruling that polarized the minds of the American people and the world; rather it was a catastrophic ruling that had cost more than 60 million unborn lives in the last 49 years. And if overturning of Roe is a cause of celebration as the millions of yet-to-beborn will now get a chance to have the right to life, it is also a cause of mourning as Roe will forever remind humanity of the dark chapter of history where millions of unborn lives were sacrificed at the altar of “choice” during the Roe’s era. This should strengthen the resolve of humanity and the Pro-Life movement to ensure that the ghost of Roe should never resurrect to haunt the world again. The Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization ruling had corrected the Roe’s historical and constitutional flaws. In a historic ruling, the SCOTUS held: “The Constitution does not confer a right to abortion; Roe and Casey are overruled; and the author-

ity to regulate abortion is returned to the people and their elected representatives.” The ruling affirmed that the Constitution, in its original form, does not guarantee constitutional and federal protections and funding to women seeking the right to abortion nor did the Constitution legalize or sanction abortion. The r uling did not make abortion illegal countrywide but abolished the constitutional right to abortion that was guaranteed by Roe. Instead, the issue is now returned to the American people, the 50 states and elected representatives to determine and regulate their own course of action. Delivering the historic opinion of the SCOTUS, Justice Samuel Alito, appointed by George W. Bush in 2005 and the author of the opinion, wrote: “The weaknesses in Roe’s reasoning are well-known. Without any grounding in the constitutional text, history, or precedent, it imposed on the entire country a detailed set of rules much like those that one might expect to find in a statute or regulation.” The Dobbs v. Jackson ruling not only reaffirmed

the Right to Life as the central theme of the Constitution but also shielded Life from any form of regulation from the government authority and establishment. It is interesting to note here that back in 1982 as a then-Senator of the state of Delaware Joe Biden supported a constitutional amendment for overturning Roe v Wade by stating: “I don’t think that a woman has the sole right to say what should happen to her body.” Only he alone can explain how a Pro-Life Senator of 1982 can turn into a bigot advocating for the denial of the Right to Life to the millions of unborn. In any case, the right to do whatever we wish to our body, be a male or female, which is the central premise of the Pro-Choice movement, is an insane idea. Our body/life does not belong to us; it belongs to the Maker and it is His gift to us. And we only need to exercise good stewardship over the gift of Life that is bestowed on us by our Maker by defending and promoting Life in the world. Dr. Nsungbemo Ezung, Wokha Town

One President to retire, new President set to come

T

he stage is again set for the election of India’s 15th President, the biggest democracy in the world. The President of India epitomizes India’s strength, democratic values and secular character. The BJP and the ruling NDA have decided to field Ms Draupudi Murmu - a tribal and a distinguished woman - for the coveted office. It could be a cliche to say that our country is at a crossroad. Perhaps such a situation arises with every new President and the timing around his or her election. As the confidence for the new President Madam Murmu to be the next President of India unfolds, we are all hopeful that the new President will certainly shape India’s future and also guide and advise the government to make India become a stronger and more vibrant nation. The Modi government is firmly committed towards an inclusive India and determined to cherish and uphold the values of “Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas”. The country is making immense progress in multiple sectors. This is truly a ‘New India’ as envisioned by our Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modiji. In the northeast region of India, we feel that a lot of positive impacts have happened in the last eight years. Some of them

are path breaking. The country is able to enjoy a more cohesive perspective, more united and is stronger today than it was about two decades back. The government led by Modiji has rightly focused on India’s Act East Policy. India’s friendship with ASEAN neighbours has only strengthened opening new avenues for north east India. As we wish good luck to Madam Murmu for the responsibility she will take over next month; it is also good to take a closer view on the last five years and the stewardship of President Ram Nath Kovindji. The year 2017 offered many challenges. There were talks of polarisation and a section of citizens tried to push a line that they no longer felt safe in this India. However, the NDA government led by the Prime Minister Modiji handled things very well and proved such fears wrong. The towering calm presence of Mr Kovind’s stature and his cool approach to making India a secular country gave a soothing touch to the world around us. His tenure would be always remembered for peace and India’s increased circle of influence in the world. The unprecedented Covid19 pandemic crisis was one of the challenging times that President Kovind had to shoulder and guide the country

to cope well. The health systems of the country remarkably became more prepared for further eventualities and the management of the entire pandemic under the Union Health and Family Welfare Ministry and the decisive steps taken with regards to vaccine manufacturing and distribution by the Prime Minister Modiji stirred the country from a spiralling down of the economy to resurgence. Thus, it is a privilege to congratulate Shri Ram Nath Kovindji as he is set to bid farewell to the Rashtrapati Bhavan, it is equally a momentous occasion as Madam Murmu would be taking the charge next month. If we are to celebrate the dignified change of India’s President office before the watchful eye of the world, the historic occasion demonstrates the triumph of Indian democracy. It has to be appreciated that both the incumbent President Kovindji and incoming President Madam Murmu are both self made people - those who have come up the ladder hard way. This is also reflective of the true spirit of ‘New India’ where an ordinary political karyakarta - born and brought up in challenging situations and circumstances would rise to become the First Citizen of world’s largest democracy. I cannot agree more with the words of Prime Minister Narendra

Modiji, “Not only is Democracy a system, but also a ‘sanskar’- a part of our ethos. Eternal Vigilance is the Price of Liberty”. Coincidentally, as I began to pen down my first draft for this article on June 25, 2022, I recalled the contemporary Indian history, which many of the scholars are also well aware of the fact that in 1975 - that is 47 years back Indian democracy was curtailed and Emergency was imposed by Smt Indira Gandhi. The country became like a prison. Prominent leaders including Jai Prakash Narayan, Atal Bihari Vajpayee and L K Advani were jailed amongst many others. The press freedom was curtailed and the judiciary too could not escape the sinister shadows of dictatorship. It is ironic that the same Congress party makes all sorts of allegations against the government of the day. While Indian democracy allows democratic views from all, a soul searching exercise of the Congress may do good for the country. In democracy, people are supreme. Time and again, the people’s spirit and yearnings for liberty, inclusion, and pluralism have triumphed. Elections of two Presidents in 2017 and 2022 also reflect this cherished spirit. As we yet again stand up to bid goodbye to the incumbent President and set the ball rolling

to welcome a new President, let us hail the great Indian democracy. The incoming President is a tribal and a woman, making us all feel more proud of the momentous occasion. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the national leadership today see the nation poised to take on the age of possibilities. The ‘New India’ also means a triumphant democracy whose achievements would be unrivalled. India will march ahead again with her head held high. The nation is proud to have a visionary and dynamic tribal leader in the person of Madam Murmu to lead the nation into “Where the mind is without fear and the head is held high; Where knowledge is free; Where the world has not been broken up into fragments by narrow domestic walls; Where words come out from the depth of truth; Where tireless striving stretches its arms towards perfection; Where the clear stream of reason has not lost its way into the dreary desert sand of dead habit; Where the mind is led forward by thee into ever-widening thought and action – Into that heaven of freedom, my Father, let my country awake” (Rabindranath Tagore). May India so shine. Kevechutso Doulo, State Executive Member, BJP Nagaland

The influence of black carbon aerosols on rainfall in Northeast India

W

hat tastes better – his mother’s recipe for a chicken gravy dish cooked on a liquid petroleum gas (LPG) cylinder or on an open wood fire? “Of course, the slow-cooked chicken on an open wood fire,” Shahjahan is quick to put any doubts to rest. Shahjahan, a farmer who doubles up as a computer technician in Tezpur on the banks of the Brahmaputra river in Assam, a river basin state, observes that most households in his village have an LPG cylinder but burning wood (biomass) is the preferred cooking method. Shahjahan and his neighbours’ experiences with the clean fuel transition – stacking up LPG against biomass (khori) use – are also reflected in the fifth National Family Health Survey data that shows that despite having LPG connections, many don’t use it for cooking. “LPG is used when we need to quickly serve tea, heat water for bath or warm

milk. It takes more time to start the biomass fire, but the food is tastier,” notes Shahjahan. The hike in LPG costs is another deterrent. “Three to four years ago we bought the LPG cylinder at Rs. 550, now the cost is around Rs. 1000. In contrast, the khori (discarded bamboo poles used to support crop growth) we use is easily available on our farms,” the 25-year-old adds, pointing to the shed to stockpile khori abutting fields of gourd and paddy. He says they have started cooking outdoors in recent years to eliminate the fumes that choke up their indoor environment and harm health. Biomass burning also spews tiny particles called black carbon. Black carbon aerosol is formed by the incomplete burning of fossil fuels, biofuels, biomass (caused by human actions) and by natural sources such as wildfires. The air pollutant is the dominant form of light-absorbing particulate matter in the

atmosphere. It warms the atmosphere because it absorbs light (solar energy). Although it remains in the atmosphere for just a few days or weeks, compared to a century or more for carbon dioxide, it is a major short-term contributor to global warming. The warming effects of black carbon aerosols are second only to carbon dioxide; it has a heat-trapping power a million times more than carbon dioxide and can travel long distances on air currents. Shahjahan’s family’s kitchen is one of the survey spots for budding scientists at Tezpur University’s Department of Environmental Science who regularly troop in with an aethalometer — an instrument to collect and analyse black carbon, commonly known as soot. They are trying to unpack more information about black carbon and aerosol sources. Shahjahan’s home is one of the several households the team surveyed for their aerosol research as the family transitioned

from biomass to padding up their cooking fuel use with LPG. “Before we started using LPG three years ago, we installed a biogas cookstove, but there were challenges to address the waste disposal; we volunteered to move onto LPG when we saw others in the neighbourhood also using LPG,” Shahjahan says, referring to the transition from biogas to LPG. Understanding the ground realities in the energy transition is key to teasing apart the role of aerosols (mainly black carbon) in tinkering with atmospheric processes including those that drive rain in northeast India, where extreme rainfall and floods in this year’s premonsoon months have upended life and livelihoods. Apart from stringent implementation of clean cooking schemes and transport policies in northeast India, reducing emissions in the Indo-Gangetic Plains is an equally important link in the chain to integrate cli-

mate action with pollution control in the Brahmaputra river basin region. Assam Climate Change Management Society (ACCMS), the government body coordinating the implementation of the Assam State Action Plan on Climate Change (SAPCC) and other climate change-related activities, has drafted the revised SAPCC (2021-2030) with a focus on adaptation and climate change mitigation. To curb harmful emissions, on the anvil are the introduction of electric vehicles in urban transport and cleaner brick production technologies, the ACCMS told Mongabay-India. Tezpur University’s Hoque maintains that policies that target climate mitigation and cleaner air must factor in local realities, practices and the gender dimension. “Because biomass burning has a substantial impact on the regional air quality and rainfall characteristics in northeast India, it makes sense to first

supply LPG to households that do not have landholdings because, in the absence of landholdings, they can’t produce biomass and can rely on clean fuels (LPG) instead. For households with landholdings, one way is to provide clean cookstoves that burn biomass more efficiently and cleanly than existing stoves. The important thing is to improve the burning conditions,” added Hoque in the context of Tezpur. “In recent years, the younger generation of women in our household, with more education and awareness of health implications of indoor biomass burning, have taken to newer applications, so they prefer LPG over woodburning stoves. They also are not keen to do the labour to collect biomass for firing up the cookstove – using LPG saves them time to take up other pursuits,” explained Shahjahan. Rescue operation underway after an ONGC helicopter fell into the Arabian Sea off the Mumbai coast. (PTI)

(ONGC), the state-owned firm which had hired helicopter service from Pawan Hans to support its oil and gas exploration and production operations in the western offshore. The fourth person belongs to a contractor working for ONGC. The circumstances that led to the incident were not immediately known but western offshore had in-

clement weather and there was a swell in the sea. Officials said ONGC has already instituted an inquiry into the incident. The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) is also likely to order a separate inquiry. Detailing sequence, officials said the chopper took off from Juhu helibase this morning just like any other

day but 1 or 1.5 km from the landing zone on the rig, it went down into the sea. It, however, managed to stay afloat with floaters fitted on such helicopters going offshore. “What we don’t know is if the helicopter toppled during the float,” an official said. On first information, ONGC and Navy scrambled vessels for the rescue. A high-speed boat from Sagar Kiran rig was first to reach the spot. In a matter of 90-100 minutes, all personnel were pulled out. While vessel Malviya-16 rescued four persons, one person was pulled out by rescue boat from Sagar Kiran rig. Navy choppers airlifted four unconscious persons to hospitals in Mumbai, the official said. The helicopter sank soon after. A multi-support vessel (MSV) is already at the spot, trying to salvage the helicopter wreckage, he said, adding divers too are at the spot. ONGC has key oil and gas fields off the Mumbai coast and Pawan Hans helicopters routinely ferry company employees and officers to the oil installations that are situated as far as 160 kilometres from the coastline. The fields in the offshore include Mumbai

High, the nation’s largest oil field, and Bassein fields, the largest gas field. The helicopter crash is not the first accident in ONGC’s history. In August 2003, a Mi-172 helicopter crashed off the Mumbai coast, killing 27 people and the pilot on board. On January 13, 2018, a Pawan Hans helicopter with seven people on board, including five ONGC officers and two pilots, crashed off the Mumbai coast minutes after it took off for the stateowned company’s oil installation in the Arabian Sea. All seven died. In 2002, a Dauphin helicopter hired by ONGC crashed into the sea but the 10 passengers were rescued. In April 2003, a Bell 412 helicopter ferr ying ONGC personnel crashed while landing at the Juhu aerodrome. Later ONGC in a statement said the helicopter carrying nine persons on board “made an emergency landing around 11.45 am today on the Arabian Sea”. The regional contingency plan was immediately activated. “With prompt action, one person was rescued by lifeboat launched from ONGC rig Sagar Kiran and four persons were rescued by ONGC stand-by vessel Malviya-16,” it said.

Call for oil exploration to boost State’s economy

(From p-1) Speaking on the occasion Gauhati High Court Kohima Bench senior advocate and High Court Bar Association, Kohima president CT Jamir claimed that all E&P matters had become subjudice to date. He mentioned that the Nagaland Petroleum & Natural Gas (NPNG) Regulations and Rules, 2012 was passed by the Nagaland Legislative Assembly (NLA) in 2012, though it was challenged through a PIL and thereafter all E&P activities became subjudice. He also spoke on the conflict between Article 371 (A) and the Union List (a list of 97 items given in the Seventh Schedule of the Constitution of India on which Parliament had exclusive power to legislate). Meanwhile, in a PowerPoint presentation, deputy general manager (Admin-

istration – Frontier Basin) of Oil India Ltd Meyabi Arho Niphi said Nagaland’s neighbour Assam was ahead as far as oil E&P was concerned. On the “misperception” about oil exploration among Nagas, he noted that many Nagas thought oil exploration meant companies bringing the delivery, placing it in a plot of land, start drilling, produce oil and discuss royalties. He explained to the gathering that a seismic survey was done first to locate where oil and fossil fuels were located and thereafter a timeframe of about eight years was required for a company to start exploration. Further, he said if Nagaland was serious about oil exploration, then it should not be looking at a time span of 5-10 years but understand that this was a time-taking

process. On prospects of petroleum and natural gas in the Nagaland, Kekhriezavi Lea, team leader of Operational Wing of Nagaland Petroleum and Natural Gas under Department of Geology & Mining and officer on special duty (OSD) to the State government, said Nagaland was a part of the Assam Arakan Basin that had established hydrocarbon occurrences and, hence, had potential for extensive and intensive exploration. He claimed that Nagaland attracted the attention of petroleum explorers since the pre-Partition days and disclosed that the prospects of hydrocarbons being available in the entire Naga hills were high. On E&P efforts, Lea admitted that companies like OIL, Vedanta, etc, were seeking permits from the State government.

In his opening remarks, Business Association of Nagas president L Mongkum Jamir, who was a moderator for the discussion, urged the people to ponder over the benefits if fossil fuels deposits were found in Nagaland and on the impact this would have in the local economy. Mentioning that there were many technology improvements that would eventually replace non-renewable energy, he wondered if Nagaland was willing to be left behind. Earlier, in his welcome address, DGC principal Dr M Libanthung Ngullie, while referring to Article 371A, asserted that the State has the exclusive rights over its land and resources. He maintained that the issue of who owned the land and resources still remained contested. Assistant professor

of Economics of DGC Imtikokla Ozukum, who chaired the programme, gave a brief thematic exposition on the topic highlighting the present status and challenges. Later, a discussion was also held among the panellists and moderator in which all had agreed that oil exploration and production needed to start as early as possible in a professional manner. The vote of thanks was proposed by assistant professor (Economics) Pudezono Tase. Rapporteurs of the discussion were assistant professor of Philosophy Dr Asangba Tzüdir and assistant professor of History Neisenuo Apon. Altogether, 73 participants, including faculty members, representatives of the civil society, members of BAN and students, attended the programme.

KREMENCHUK, JUN 28 (AP): Rescuers searched through charred rubble of a shopping mall on Tuesday looking for more victims of a Russian missile strike that killed at least 18 and wounded scores in what Ukraine’s president called “one of the most daring terrorist attacks in European history.” President Volodymyr Zelensky said many of the more than 1,000 afternoon shoppers and workers inside the mall in the city of Kremenchuk managed to escape. Giant plumes of black smoke, dust and orange flames billowed from the wreckage as emergency crews combed through broken metal and concrete for victims. Drones whirred above, clouds of dark smoke still emanating from the ruins several hours after the fire was extinguished. Casualty figures rose as rescuers sifted through the smoldering rubble. The regional governor, Dmytro Lunin, said at least 18 people were killed and 59 others sought medical assistance, of whom 25 were hospitalised. The region declared a day of mourning Tuesday for the victims of the attack. “We are working to dismantle the construction

so that it is possible to get machinery in there since the metal elements are very heavy and big, and disassembling them by hand is impossible,” said Volodymyr Hychkan, an emergency services official. At Ukraine’s request, the UN Security Council scheduled an emergency meeting in New York on Tuesday to discuss the attack. In the first Russian government comment on the missile strike, the country’s first deputy permanent representative to the United Nations, Dmitry Polyansky, alleged multiple inconsisten-

cies that he didn’t specify, claiming on Twitter that the incident was a provocation by Ukraine. Russia has repeatedly denied it targets civilian infrastructure, even though Russian attacks have hit other shopping malls, theaters, hospitals, kindergartens and apartment buildings in the fourmonth war. On Tuesday, Russian forces struck the Black Sea city of Ochakiv in the Mykolaiv region, damaging apartment buildings and killing two, including a 6-year-old child. A further six people, four of them children, were wounded.

Gunmen attack anti-polio team in Pakistan; kill three: Police

PESHAWAR, JUN 28 (PTI): Three people, including two policemen, escorting an anti-polio vaccination team, were killed when unidentified assailants attacked them in Pakistan’s restive north Waziristan tribal district on Tuesday, police said. The gunmen attacked the team, killing one of its members and two policemen escorting them, while it was on a door-to door antipolio vaccination drive after nine new cases were reported this year in the district that borders Afghanistan. No group has claimed responsibility for the attack. The incident was condemned by Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Mehmood Khan. The chief minister has asked the police chief for the early arrest of those behind the attack. “The attackers on polio teams are enemies of our children,” a statement issued by the Deputy Commissioner of North Waziristan Shahid Ali Khan said. “The accused will be brought to book soon. government is determined to eliminate polio from the province come what may,” the statement said. Attacks on workers of the anti-polio vaccination drives in Pakistan have increased in recent times. In March this year, gunmen in northwestern Pakistan shot and killed a female polio worker as she was returning home after taking part in the country’s latest anti-polio campaign. In January last year, armed gunmen shot dead a police officer guarding a team of polio vaccine handlers in northwestern Paki-

stan. Pakistan, along with Afghanistan, remains the last polio-endemic countries in the world, according to the World Health Organisation. Recently, Pakistan’s vaccination programme has come under scrutiny after the detection of poliovirus in sewage samples in London for the first time in four decades. Health authorities in Islamabad claim the “vaccine-derived virus” found in the UK exists in 22 countries and the type found locally was the wild poliovirus (WPV).

One of them, a 3-month-old baby, is in a coma, according to local officials. The missile strike on Kremenchuk occurred as Western leaders pledged continued suppor t for Ukraine and the world’s major economies prepared new sanctions against Russia, including a price cap on oil and higher tariffs on goods. Meanwhile, the US appeared ready to respond to Zelenskyy’s call for more air defense systems, and NATO planned to increase the size of its rapid-reaction forces nearly eightfold — to 300,000 troops.

G-7 pledges $4.5BN to tackle food insecurity ELMAU (GERMANY), JUN 28 (AP): Group of Seven leaders have agreed to spend $4.5 billion on addressing food security issues around the globe exacerbated by rising grain and food costs following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. The White House said Tuesday that the United States is pitching in $2.76 billion toward the effort. The funding will be used to assist 47 countries and regional organizations dealing with food insecurity and malnutrition. The White House says the most immediate needs are in the Horn of Africa, where the Russian blockade of grain from Ukraine has worsened an already desperate situation. The Horn of Africa is experiencing a fourth straight season of drought, with as many as 20 million facing the threat of starvation by year’s end, the White House says. The Biden administration said in a statement that Russian President Vladimir Putin’s actions “have strangled food and agriculture production and have used food as a weapon of war.”

Zelenskyy said the mall presented “no tphreat to the Russian army” and had “no strategic value.” He accused Russia of sabotaging “people’s attempts to live a normal life, which make the occupiers so angry.” In his nightly address, he said it appeared Russian forces had intentionally targeted the shopping center and added, “Today’s Russian strike at a shopping mall in Kremenchuk is one of the most daring terrorist attacks in European history.” He said Russia “has become the largest terrorist organisation in the world.” Russia has increasingly used long-range bombers in the war. Ukrainian officials said Russian Tu-22M3 long-range bombers flying over Russia’s western Kursk region fired the missiles, one of which hit the shopping center and another that struck a sports arena in Kremenchuk. The Russian strike echoed earlier attacks that caused large numbers of civilian casualties — such as one in March on a Mariupol theater where many civilians had holed up, killing an estimated 600, and another in April on a train station in eastern Kramatorsk that killed at least 59 people.

NATO to put 300,000 troops on alert to counter Russia threat Tuesday to Thursday this week. The rapid-reaction Nato Response Force currently numbers up to 40,000, and the proposed change amounts to a broad revision in response to Russian militarisation. Under the plans, Nato will also move stocks of munitions and other supplies farther east, a transition due to be completed in 2023, the Guardian reported. The Secretary General conceded he could not make any promises about the progress of applications by Sweden and Finland to join Nato, because objections raised by Turkey to their membership remained unresolved. Stoltenberg said Turkey’s President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, had agreed to meet Swedish Prime Minister Magdalena Andersson, and Finland’s president Sauli Niinisto on Tuesday in Madrid to try to resolve the issue. But he played down hopes of a breakthrough at the meeting on the margins of the NATO event. “It’s too early to say what kind of progress you can make by the summit,” he told a press conference.

Jens Stoltenberg

M A D R I D, J U N E 2 8 (IANS): NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said this weeks Madrid summit will agree the alliances most significant transformation for a generation, putting 300,000 troops at high readiness in response to Russias invasion of Ukraine. Stoltenberg said the military alliance’s forces in the Baltic states and five other frontline countries would be increased “up to brigade levels”, doubled or trebled to between 3,000 and 5,000 troops, the Guardian reported. That would amount to “the biggest overhaul of our collective defence and deterrence since the cold war”, he said before the meeting of the 30-country alliance, which runs from

DUBAI, JUN 28 (AP): Iran and the United States appeared poised Tuesday to start indirect talks in Qatar aimed at finding a way to save Tehran’s tattered nuclear deal with world powers. The state-owned Tehran Times posted a photograph of Iran’s top nuclear negotiator, Ali Bagheri Kani, in a hotel lobby with Iranian Ambassador to Qatar Hamidreza Dehghani. The newspaper said Bagheri Kani was in Doha, the Qatari capital, for the resumption of the talks. Rob Malley, the US special representative for Iran, arrived in Qatar on Monday night ahead of the talks. The US Embassy in Qatar said Malley met with Qatari Foreign Minister Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani to discuss “joint diplomatic efforts to address issues with Iran,” but declined to immediately offer any other details about his trip. Iran and world powers agreed in 2015 to the nuclear deal, which saw Tehran drastically limit its enrichment of uranium in exchange for the lifting of economic sanctions.

On the flip side, if he loses this appeal hearing, Modi can approach the Supreme Court on a point of law of public importance, to be applied for to the Supreme Court against the High Court’s decision within 14 days of a High Court verdict. However, this involves a high threshold as appeals to the Supreme Court can only be made if the High Court has certified that the case involves a point of law of general public importance. Finally, after all avenues in the UK courts are exhausted, he could still seek a so-called Rule 39 injunction from the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR).

UK High Court hears Nirav plea against extradition

LONDON, JUN 28 (PTI): A British court on Tuesday opened the continuation appeal hearing in the extradition case of Nirav Modi, who is wanted in India on the charges of fraud and money laundering amounting to an estimated USD 2 billion in the Punjab National Bank (PNB) loan scam case. The 51-year-old diamond merchant had lodged an appeal last year against his extradition order on mental health grounds. Lord Justice Jeremy Stuart-Smith and Justice Robert Jay presided over an initial hearing at the High Court in December last year to determine whether District Judge Sam Goozee’s Westminster Magistrates’ Court ruling from February 2021 in favour of extradition was incorrect to overlook the diamond merchant’s “high risk of suicide”. The hearing this week is for the continuation of that appeal, with a judgment likely soon. If Modi wins this appeal hearing in the High Court, he cannot be extradited unless the Indian government is successful in getting permission to ap-

The new season will see Cara Delevingne join the cast as Alice, a new character described as Mabel’s love interest who puts her “in touch with a side of herself she’s been somewhat neglecting since the show began” [via Vanity Fair]. Where Stones Can Form in Your Body

sound waves and lasers. Gallbladder This small organ in your upper right belly stores a digestive juice called bile. Cholesterol and a compound called bilirubin in the bile may lead to gallstones. They’re usually too small to cause pain or to need treatment. You might need surgery to take the gallbladder out if the stones are causing pain. Prostate In men, it’s a small gland near your bladder that makes fluid to protect sperm. Stones that form here are about the size of poppy seeds, and they’re more common at middle age and older. Typically you won’t need treatment because they don’t usually cause symptoms. But sometimes they get infected, which can inflame your prostate, and cause urinary tract problems. This may require antibiotics or other treatment. Mouth We don’t know ex-

actly why, but stones can appear inside your mouth. They can be painful and swell up. They may block tubes that channel saliva when you eat. You might see the whitish stone under your tongue. It’s usually not serious. You might make them go away if you drink more water, massage the stone loose, or suck on something sour. If not, your doctor can remove it. Pancreas This organ in the middle of your belly area makes hormones that help digest food and keep your blood sugar steady. Stones can pass from the gallbladder through bile ducts to the pancreas and inflame it. You could have a fever, fast pulse, nausea, and belly pain that’s worse after meals and radiates to your back. If the stone doesn’t pass on its own, your doctor may take it out. Sometimes they might also remove your gallbladder, the source of the problem.

Nose This rare stone starts when a piece of button, eraser, seed, wood, or something similar gets stuck up your nose, often in childhood. Over years, it can attract minerals like calcium, magnesium, and iron and get bigger. Eventually, you may notice pain or smelly mucus that drains from only one nostril. Your doctor finds it by looking up your nose with a special tool, and likely takes out the mass with surgery. Veins When your veins don’t grow normally, they can cause weak spots, bumps, and other problems. You might have pain and discolored skin, especially around the mouth, lips, cheek, head, and neck. Vein stones may happen because blood moves more slowly in those areas and eventually clots and hardens into a stone. Your doctor can help treat your symptoms and may look for underlying issues with your veins. Belly Stones are rare here and in your digestive system. Illness like diverticulitis or inflammatory bowel disease could cause them. So can changes in your stomach and intestines due to disease, genetics, or previous surgeries. Your doctor likely will get rid of them with an operation. They’ll try to figure out the root cause to keep them from coming back. Medically Reviewed by Minesh Khatri, MD

Kidneys These hard nuggets grow when minerals, usually calcium, build up in your urinary tract. They can really hurt, especially in your back near your hips and ribs, if they get big enough to block all or some of your pee. You might see blood or even a piece of a stone in your urine. Smaller ones sometimes exit on their own in your pee. But you might need surgery to get rid of larger ones. Throat Your tonsils are two lumps of tissue at the back of your throat that help filter out germs. Food, dead skin, or other debris can get caught there and harden into stones, called “tonsilloliths.” You might have a sore throat, stinky breath, and swollen tonsils with white spots. You can usually brush the stones gently away with your toothbrush or a cotton swab, or gargle them away with saltwater. If that doesn’t do it, talk to your doctor. Bladder You might get them because you don’t pee fully. Or because your urine is too high in some minerals and too low in others. These stones form on their own or after a small kidney stone slips down to the bladder and gets bigger. You might have cloudy or bloody urine, or pain in your lower belly when you pee. Your doctor could treat it with surgery or drugs, or break it up with

SAINT LUCIA, JUN 28 (AP): West Indies beat Bangladesh by 10 wickets in the second Test and took a one-sided series 2-0 at Daren Sammy Stadium on Monday. Both Tests were won well inside four days. A wet field washed out the first two sessions on Monday, but when Bangladesh resumed on 1326, needing 42 more runs to make West Indies bat again, play lasted less than 12 overs. Bangladesh’s second innings extended nine more overs and 54 more runs before it was all over

on 186. Nurul Hasan was stranded on 60 not out from 50 balls. Needing 13 runs to win, West Indies openers John Campbell and captain Kraigg Brathwaite took 17 balls. Bangladesh’s 100th Test loss came after it scored 234 and 186 and West Indies 408 and 13 not out. When the day’s play got underway, Mehidy Hasan Miraz got off with a mark with a boundary then was out next ball trying to block an Alzarri Joseph bouncer and edging behind. Jayden Seales bagged

in the one over Ebadot Hossain and Shoriful Islam for ducks. Seales, Joseph and Kemar Roach each took three wickets. Khaled Ahmed was run out for a duck from the non-striker’s end when Nurul wasn’t looking for a run. Nurul resumed from 16 overnight and blasted two sixes and five boundaries for his third test fifty — all against West Indies — and four runs short of his career best. They start three Twenty20s and three one-day internationals from Saturday.

and was given the all clear by a doctor. Sekhar then states that he returned to the side of the cage where a teammate, Seth Rosario, was competing against Zahoor Shah, a mixed martial arts fighter from Afghanistan. Sekhar states that as he was cheering for his teammate, he was hit by a rolled-up paper by supporters of Shah. Sensing the matter was escalating, Sekhar says officials of the MFN promotion advised him to leave the premises. As Sekhar was walking past the cage, he says he

noticed Badakshi (13-3) to his right. In a video of the incident seen by Sportstar, Badakshi, 27, can be seen standing next to Ayesha and Krishna Shroff. In pictures posted on his Instagram account, the Afghan fighter can be seen sitting next to Krishna. After passing the Afghan fighter, Sekhar says in his statement that he was punched twice on the jaw by Badakshi and thought his jaw was broken. Sekhar then states that after he fell to the ground, several members of the crowd punched and kicked him.

his transfer to Eintracht but said the World Cup was too far away to be an issue for him. “The most important thing is that I improve and am successful with the team. The rest will come,” Goetze told a news conference on Tuesday. “My last international match was a few years ago (2017). At the time I had a specific role and it was all very near to me. Currently, that is not an issue for me.” Eintracht will be competing in the Champions League group stage next season as Europa League winners. The World Cup will be held in November and December in Qatar. “My focus is on matches and the club and to get the most out of my performances. All the rest is not in my head because it is too far into the future,” Goetze said.

The 30-year-old attacking midfielder, who scored the winning goal in the 2014 World Cup final against Argentina, signed a contract with Europa League winners Eintracht last week after two years at PSV Eindhoven. Manipur chief minister N. Biren Singh rides a pony during his visit to Lamphelpat. (NP) Correspondent

IMPHAL, JUN 28: Manipur chief minister, N.Biren Singh on Tuesday announced that Pologrounds will be developed in all the five valley districts of the state. He made the announcement during an inspection to a newly set up pony breeding ground in Imphal’s Lamphelpat. Singh inspected the 30 acre pony breeding

ground which was allocated to Manipur Horse Riding and Polo Association (MHRPA). He also inspected the pony breeding site at Pangei, Imphal East. Talking to media at Lamphelpat, Singh informed that a Polo ground each would be developed at five valley districts where Sagol Kangjei (polo) ground at Wangjing Tentha in Thoubal district will be developed first.

He said that pony has been associated with Manipur since time immemorial and had taken an important role in driving out the Awa (Burmese) from the erstwhile kingdom during the infamous seven years devastation period. “However, due to lack of breeding ground, we could see lots of pony gathered at many roads leading to certain accidents and endangering the survival of the species.

Malaysia Open: HS Prannoy advances, Praneeth, Verma exit

KUALA LUMPUR, JUN 28 (PTI): India’s HS Prannoy faced stiff resistance before prevailing against local hero Daren Liew as the Indian shuttler progressed to the men’s singles second round of the Malaysia Open on Tuesday. A former top-10 player, Prannoy, who had reached the semifinals of Indonesia Open Super 1000 earlier this month, emerged a 2114 17-21 21-18 winner in 62 minutes. The 29-year-old from Kerala, ranked 21st currently, will face fourth seeded Chou Tien Chen of Chinese Taipei next at the Super 750 badminton tournament. Prannoy’s win brought some cheers to the Indian camp after B Sai Praneeth and Sameer Verma made early exits. While Praneeth went down to world number six Anthony Sinisuka Ginting of Indo-

nesia, Sameer lost to world number 8 Jonatan Christie, also from Indonesia. The 30-year-old Praneeth, currently ranked world number 19, lost 15-21 21-19 9-21 to Ginting in a 50-minute men’s single match. This was the eighth meeting between the two players with the Indonesian now leading the head-tohead record 5-3. They last played at the 2020 Asian Team championships where

Ginting won the contest after Praneeth retired due to an injury. Sameer, who is making a comeback from injury, fought for 49 minutes before losing 14-21 21-13 7-21 in another match. In doubles, the women’s pairing of Ashwini Ponnappa and N Sikki Reddy also bowed out of the tournament after losing 15-21 11-21 to Japanese duo of Nami Matsuyama and Chiharu Shida, seeded sixth.

As such, the state government along with MHRPA had started bringing the ponies to breeding ground,” Singh said. The chief minister said that he was surprised to learn from experts that Manipur pony is the only horse breed which has adaptability for feeding at swampy land while expressing his proud feeling for the uniqueness of the pony. He maintained that the state government had been taking up all possible measures to safeguard the Manipur pony and urged the pony breeders not to let their ponies gather at roadside and to bring them to the breeding ground at Lamphelpat if the breeders don’t have such facilities at their places. Later, the chief minister also took stock of the progress of construction of a polo ground at Ibudhou Marjing Eco-Tourism Park in Imphal East district. Singh was accompanied by tribal affairs and hills minister Letpao Haokip, social welfare minister Heikham Dingo and MLA Lourembam Rameshwor Meetei among others during the inspection.

Morgan bids adieu to Intl cricket

Eoin Morgan

LONDON, JUN 28 (AP): Eoin Morgan confirmed his retirement from international cricket and stepped down as England’s white-ball captain after more than seven years on Tuesday. After England’s dismal failure at the 2015 Cricket World Cup, Morgan spearheaded the team’s white-ball transformation to a bold, attacking approach and unprecedented heights. He led England’s to its first global 50-over title at the 2019 World Cup, and the No. 1 ranking in one-day internationals and Twenty20s. They enjoyed series victories against every major team and 60% success on his watch. “As with all great players and leaders, he has changed the way the game has been played, and he has changed the way an entire generation and generations to come will play this form of the game,” Rob Key, the managing director of England men’s cricket, said.

NAGALAND POST, DIMAPUR WEDNESDAY, JUNE 29, 2022

Hooda’s ton, Samson’s 50 take India to 225/7 against Ireland MALAHIDE (IRELAND), JUN 28 (PTI): Deepak Hooda produced a master-class knock, becoming only the fourth Indian to hit a T20 International century, as the visiting side posted a mammoth 225 for 7 against Ireland in the second and final match here on Tuesday. During his maiden T20I ton (104 off 57 balls), Hooda showed he belonged to the big stage with his scintillating stroke play, both off the front and backfoot. While Hooda was elegant and at ease on the frontfoot, he was equally good on the backfoot, dispatching the ball over the midwicket boundary for a few sixes. Hooda decorated his knock with nine fours and six hits over the fence. He was ably supported by Sanju Samson, who, opening the batting in place of injured Ruturaj Gaikwad, played second fiddle but grabbed his opportunity with both hands. Samson made 77 off 42 balls with the help of nine boundaries and four sixes. Both Hooda and Samson’s strokeplay down the ground were a treat for the eyes. But India did not have the best of starts as they lost Ishan Kishan (3) early. The

left-handed opener once again wasted an opportunity, nicking a Mark Adair delivery to Lorcan Tucker behind the stumps in the third over. Hooda and Samson joined hands and the duo batted effortlessly, albeit handing two difficult chances, to share 176 runs off just 85 balls to lay the foundation for India’s huge total. It was a one-way traffic after Kishan’s dimissal as Hooda and Samson toyed with the Irish bowlers and did not let them settle down. Except for a difficult chance which Paul Stirling dropped at extra off in the eight over, Hooda played a perfect knock. Samson too was handed a life in the ninth over when leg-spinner

Gareth Delany dropped a difficult caught-and-bowled chance. Samson too played some delightful strokes, particularly off the backfoot during his hallf-century knock. He, however, was cleaned up by Adair in the 17th over. Hooda brought up his maiden T20I century off 55 balls with a single to join the likes of Rohit Sharma, KL Rahul and Suresh Raina in the elite club of only four Indian centurions in the format. Once Hooda departed at the team score of 212, Surya Kumar Yadav (15) and skipper Hardik Pandya (13 not out) tried to accelerate the scoring but failed as India lost three wickets for the addition of just 14 runs in the last two overs.

Wimbledon: Nadal survives scare; Iga Swiatek enters second round

LO N D O N, J U N 2 8 (AGENCIES/IANS): Rafael Nadal got his Wimbledon campaign off to a winning start, though he needed four sets to do it. While World No.1 Iga Swiatek safely navigated the first round at Wimbledon, beating Croatian qualifier Jana Fett in straight sets, stretching her winning streak to 36 matches, the most consecutive wins since 2000. The second-seeded Nadal defeated Francisco Cerundolo of Argentina 6-4, 6-3, 3-6, 6-4 on Centre Court. The Spaniard is attempting to win his third consecutive Grand Slam tournament to add to his men’s record 22 major titles. It was Nadal’s first match since winning the French Open earlier this month. The three weeks off showed at times, as Nadal amassed 41 unforced errors to go with 23 winners. At Roland Garros, Nadal needed injections to numb the pain in his bothersome left foot. But he entered Wimbledon optimistic about the foot after receiving new treatment. Iga Swiatek extends winning streak to 36 Playing her first match since bagging the French Open title earlier this month,

Rafael Nadal

the 21-year-old Polish won her Centre Court contest 6-0, 6-3 in 75 minutes to be safely through to the second round. Swiatek has now matched Monica Seles’s 36-match winning streak from 1990. A second-round win would tie Martina Hingis’s season-opening 37-match winning streak in 1997. The top seed has fallen at the opening stage only three times in SW19. And Swiatek did not give any indications that she would disrupt the tradition. Opening Centre Court play on Tuesday and against a player who was playing just her third Grand Slam main draw. Swiatek was dominant in the first set but was heavily tested by Fett in

the second set. Fett increasingly drew errors from the top seed as the match progressed, and held five break points to take a commanding 4-1 lead in the second set. But Swiatek’s powerful groundstrokes held her in good stead and she squeaked her way out of trouble before grabbing the last five games of the match. Swiatek converted six of her 10 break points on the day, according to a report on the WTA tour website. Former Top 100 player Fett is now 0-3 against Top 10 players in her career. Fett famously held two match points against Caroline Wozniacki in the second round of the 2018 Australian Open -- an event Wozniacki would go on to win.
