bring a solution as early as possible”. The CCoNPI is also likely to apprise Assam chief minister and NEDA convenor Himanta Biswa Sarma on the outcome of Saturday’s meeting so as to take it forward to the Centre. On the insistence of the NSCN(I-M) that Framework Agreement was inclusive of flag and constitution which has been the hurdle towards inking a broadbased agreement, Kronu replied that the CCoNPI would discuss it with the Government of India. UDA chairman, TR Zeliang, stated that the core committee meeting with the NSCN (I-M) comes after the latter’s visit to Delhi where its delegation met with A.K. Mishra the government of India’s representative for Naga talks. Zeliang said the core committee had requested NSCN(I-M) to continue with the talks since this was the only way by which settlement could be achieved. He also said the committee will also request the Centre to continue talks and

that highlights of Saturday’s meeting will be forwarded to the Centre so as to “pursue further negotiations”. When approached NSCN (I-M) representatives were unwilling to talk to the media. Besides CCoNPI convenor and chief minister Neiphiu Rio, the delegation included- co-convenors: deputy chief minister Y. Patton, UDA chairman T.R.Zeliang and NPF leader Kuzholuzo Neinu; member secretary Neiba Kronu (NDPP) and members-- G. Kaito (NDPP), Y.M. Yollow (NDPP) and Dr. Ngangshi (NPF). LH backs Jamir, others on Naga political issue D I M A P U R , M AY 2 8 (NPN): Lotha Hoho(LH) said that it was fully convinced that various statements by veteran Naga politician Dr. S.C. Jamir, about the reality of the Naga settlement, in his interview with various media outlets, were “all facts and what Nagas have to realise and accept.” L H c h a i r m a n E r. Mhondamo Ovung and general secretary S. Aben Ngullie further mentioned that the same facts were also explained by other prominent leaders such as -deputy chief minister Y. Patton; H&TE minister Temjen Imna Along, NPF Legislature Party Leader Kuzholuzo(Azo) Nienu etc. LH said all of them had also conveyed, not their personal views; but the fact of the

matter. Further , LH has put on record its support to the recent statements made by the Ao Senden, UngmaVillage, Mokokchung Town Lanur Telongjem, Watsu Mundang, Soyim Students’ Union, Sumi Hoho, AKM and others. LH said that the Naga issue does not pertain to any particular tribe or group alone, but all Nagas, particularly of Nagaland. LH has therefore, urged upon all concerned to raise their voices for the truth. “Yes, it is now made plain that integration, constitution and flag are all not feasible in the Phase-I Naga solution,” LH stated. It maintained that these issues were only to be pursued democratically, in the post phase-I settlement.

Lotha Hoho also pointed out that after 25 years of negotiation, most stakeholders were impatient and that the process of negotiations has formally completed on the October 31,2019. Therefore, the hoho stated, “most competencies are finalised and only the loose ends are to be trimmed, for final presentation to the Nagas for acceptance, correction and deletion (if any).” LH said Nagas have shed much blood for long and have endured many storms and were now willing to pursue democratically; whatever unresolved issues remain to be settled. “We need to also understand that any settlement cannot satisfy everyone’s aspiration; but majority

IndiGo fined `5L over handling of specially abled child NEW DELHI, MAY 28 (AGENCIES): IndiGo airlines has been fined Rs. 5 lakh for not allowing a boy with special needs to board a flight from Ranchi. The Directorate General of Civil Aviation, the country’s top regulator for air travel, said that a probe had found that “the handling of the special child by the Indigo ground staff was deficient and ended up exacerbating the situation”. “A more compassionate handling would have smoothened the nerves, calmed the child and would have obviated the need for the extreme step resulting in denied boarding to the passengers,” it said in a

statement. “Special situations deserve extraordinary responses but the Airline staff failed to rise up to the occasion and in the process committed lapses in adherence to the letter and spirit of the Civil Aviation Requirements (Regulations),” the statement said, adding that the competent authority has decided to impose a penalty of Rs.5 lakh on the airline. The regulator added that to prevent such situations, it shall revisit its regulations and bring about necessary changes. The ground staff ’s refusal to allow the child from boarding the aircraft had drawn widespread criticism,

prompting the aviation regulator to launch a probe. The matter came to light after Manisha Gupta, a passenger on the RanchiHyderabad flight on May 7, narrated the ordeal of the child and her parents as the crew refused to let them board. In a social media post that went viral, Gupta said the IndiGo manager kept shouting and telling everyone that the “child is uncontrollable”. She said other passengers rallied around the family and urged them to let them fly but to no avail. Responding to the outrage, IndiGo CEO Ronojoy Dutta had said in a statement that they were

“forced to make a difficult decision”. “Throughout the check-in and boarding process our intent of course was to carry the family, however, at the boarding area the teenager was visibly in panic. While providing courteous and compassionate service to our customers is of paramount importance to us, the airport staff, in line with the safety guidelines, were forced to make a difficult decision as to whether this commotion would carry forward aboard the aircraft,” he said. The family, said the airline, was provided a hotel stay, and they flew the next morning to their destination.

decision must prevail,” LH reiterated. LH also reminded that the Naga political movement had taken roots in the Lotha soil and that Lotha people have sacrificed many lives and have suffered much like any Naga adding that the Lotha Hoho has fully supported the Naga national movement and pursuit for settlement. Therefore, LH affirmed that the Lotha people “will not allow anyone to mislead the Nagas and all competencies, said to have been finalised, should be presented to the Nagas for acceptance, correction or rejection.” The terms “Honourable”, “Acceptable” and “Inclusive” need to be clearly defined any ambiguity to mislead the Nagas is not permissible, LH asserted.

WPH president Zhitho Nyuthe and information secretary Xepe Thüvüri said the hoho has taken serious note of Metha’s repeated threat to Pochury village leaders and citizens living in Kohima. Stating that his threat to any particular area was taken as a threat to whole community, WPH said he

would be held responsible in the event of any harm to Pochury people. The hoho also condemned the then executive engineer, PWD (R&B) Phek for purportedly issuing completion certificate. WPH questioned how could EE approve such certificate without any work being completed “unless he works hand in gloves with the said contractor?” Meanwhile, WPH has urged all right-thinking citizens to “condemn this kind of barbaric and uncivilized attitude of a contractor.”

‘Culture, a source of strength & identity for Nagas’

S. Phangnon Konyak, Echu Konyak and others on Saturday (NP)

Correspondent KO H I M A , M AY 2 8 (NPN): Member of Parliament, Rajya Sabha, S. Phangnon Konyak on Saturday said culture and tradition are the source of strength and identity for Nagas. Speaking at the launching programme of a book titled “Folktales of the Konyak Nagas” authored by E. Echu Konyak,

here at NBCC platinum hall, the MP said a community writing its own stories and experiences was very important since Nagas came from an oral tradition. She said such documentation has to be done now, or else the future generation would have a “distorted identity.” Phangnon appreciated all who supported Echu in making the project a

success. In the publisher’s note, publisher and chief editor, Dr. Lanusangla Tzudir stressed on the urgent need to document the rich culture and traditions of Nagas. She said that the textile which Konyak has, should also be documented. Dr. Lanusangla lamented how writing about Nagas was initiated by outsiders and Naga writers

were trying to dismantle some of the assumptions and correct what was written. Independent researcher and freelancer editor, Dr. Vizovono Elizabeth in his address said the 28 tales in the collection was a treasure that needed to be heard, read, told and retold by young and old. Meanwhile, the author, Echu Konyak thanked all who were involved in making the project successful and said the initiative transpired him being a village boy who was fascinated by sharing of stories among his peers. The programme was chaired by asst. prof & HOD department of commerce Ngiplon Rachel Chohwanglim, KBBK pastor Z. Mankup Loam offered dedicatory prayer while students’ minityr coordinator NBCC Khrievino Sahu said the invocation. The programme was attended by KUK and KNSK, friends, family and well-wishers.

Government Polytechnic Doyang, Wokha was jointly inaugurated by minister for Higher Education & Tribal Affairs, Temjen Imna Along and advisor to CM for Technical Education & Election Medo Yhokha on May 27, at Doyang, Wokha. According to a DIPR report, minister for Higher Education & Tribal Affairs, Temjen Imna Along, while inaugurating the institution lauded the initiative of the chief minister for successfully creating post for the three polytechnic institutions in the state and making it functional. He said that being a newly created institution, requirements such as water connectivity, electricity and other basic things should be taken care of. On requirement of girls’ hostel, the minister assured to take up the matter and ensure that construction of the girls’ hostel be taken up at the earliest. to focus on role of rivers as Act East policy to impact beyond SE Asia: EAM Need connectors: IHC to Bangladesh

GUWAHATI, MAY 28 (PTI): External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar Saturday said that the coming together of Act East and Neighbourhood First policies will have an enormous reinforcing impact for the country beyond the confines of southeast Asia. The realisation of this is evident from the potential of BIMSTEC in the Bay of Bengal region, he said addressing the Natural Allies in Development and Interdependence (NADI) conclave here. La nd c onnectivity through Myanmar and sea connectivity through Bangladesh will open up all the ways to Vietnam and Philippines, he said. “Once this becomes viable on a commercial scale, it will create an East-West lateral with sweeping consequences for the continent,” Jaishankar saidd. It will not only build on the partnership with the ASEAN countries and Japan, but will actually make a difference to the Indo-Pacific Economic Framework that is now in the making, the union minister said. “It is definitely within our ability to overcome geography and rewrite history if only we can get the poli-

tics and economics right,” he said. Jaishankar said that this vision can be successfully realised by enhancing connectivity with Bangladesh, Nepal, Bhutan and Myanmar to improve access to ASEAN countries and beyond. Restoration of six historical cross-border rail links dormant since 1965 is a major step towards connectivity with Bangladesh, particularly with the North East, he said. Jaishankar highlighted various ongoing projects in Bangladesh, Nepal, Bhutan

IIT-Guwahati to probe steel dome collapse in Meghalaya

Meghalaya CM Conrad Sangma during inspection of the dome collapse in Mawdiangdiang.

SHILLONG, MAY 28 (PTI): Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma said the Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati (IITG) will audit the collapse of a steel dome from atop the under-construction Assembly building. The High Powered Committee of the Assembly had decided to entrust a third party institution to conduct an audit and investigate into the incident. The steel dome atop the under-construction Assembly building collapsed on Sunday. “We expect them (IIT Guwahati) to come in the next couple of days and inspect. A complete study will be done,” the chief minister said on Friday, adding that it will be completely independent in nature and independent from both the stakeholders – designer and the contractor – and also

from the government. The CM said the Assembly building was a highly technical project, as a project of this nature has never been done in the whole of North East. “As per my knowledge I think nowhere in the eastern region this kind of project has been tried out so it was very highly technical and very complicated both from design and construction point of view,” Sangma said. He urged all concerned to wait for the inquiry report to present the real picture into the entire incident, adding that it will be premature to jump into any conclusion and blame anybody. “Let the inquiry report come out and we will take a decision,” he said. The contract for the project in New Shillong Township has been given to UP-based firm UPNRRN Ltd.

and Myanmar which have led to collaboration with these countries which in turn ushered regional cooperation in various sectors and strengthening of the economy not only between the two points of collaboration but also in the areas within these points. He said the implementation of the Kaladan multi modal transit transport project on the Myanmar side is the toughest due to its topography and insurgency. “We have genuinely struggled with this complex project but we are more than determined ever to get it done’’.

Agartala-Kolkata bus service via Dhaka to resume

AGARTALA, MAY 28 (PTI): The Agartala-Kolkata bus service via Dhaka will resume from June 10 after a hiatus of over two years due to the COVID-19 pandemic, an official of the Tripura government said on Saturday. The bus service was initially planned to restart from April 28 but postponed owing to “some technical reasons”, he said. State transport department principal secretary LH Darlong has written letters to Bangladesh’s Ministry of External Affairs and the Indian High Commission to the neighbouring country, apprising them of the proposed resumption of the international bus service. “Tickets for the bus service will be available at the Tripura Road Transport Corporation counter at Krishnanagar from June 1. Passengers need to have a valid passport and visa to board a vehicle,” a transport department official said. In a separate letter to the joint secretary of the Ministry of External Affairs in New Delhi, state additional secretary S Chowdhury informed all concerned about the resumption of the cross border bus service.

The project, which is expected to be operation in March 2023, connects the eastern Indian seaport of Kolkata with Sittwe seaport in Rakhine state of Myanmar by sea. ‘’We are also looking at the feasibility of creating cross-country rail lines between Bhutan and India, running through Assam and to expand the Buddhist circuit to connect cherished religious places in Nepal and Bhutan with those in Sikkim and Arunachal Pradesh ... All these projects are a practical illustration of a future buzzing with prom-

ise,” he said. These endeavours will literally bring the ASEAN closer and if North East, Bangladesh, Nepal, Bhutan and Myanmar get more deeply intertwined, each of them stands to benefit from more access, opportunity, resources and markets, the central minister said. The India-Japan Act East Forum was launched in 2017 as a platform to bring together all stakeholders and coordinate on projects being undertaken with Japanese assistance. ‘’Given the priority that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has given to the North East, we should work with our most trusted global partners across various segments,’’ he said. Jaishankar highlighted the locational importance of Guwahati and said that it holds enormous promise not only for the region and the neighbouring countries but even for the geographies beyond. ‘’There are impediments no doubt that need to be overcome, like the physical barriers of topography, which can be best resolved by engineering and human ingenuity. There are the human obstacles, which were created by certain choices made in the past.

GUWAHATI, MAY 28 (PTI): Stressing on the role of rivers as connectors, India’s High Commissioner to Bangladesh Vikram Doraiswami on Saturday said all economic and political contexts of a river system along with its historical and cultural dimensions need to be taken into consideration for formulating policies surrounding it. The focus of discussion on rivers should shift from “hydro diplomacy” to “water cooperation”, he said. “The notion of a river as a separator has been in focus for long… but the role of a river as a connector is more fundamental,” Doraiswami said. He was speaking at a session on ‘Rivers of the Bay of Bengal: Connecting the Blue Economy, the Mountain Economy and the Plains Economy’ as part of ‘NADI 3: Asian Confluence River Conclave 2022’ here. “We tend to look at rivers sanguinely, rather we should view it more comprehensively. A more holistic approach is needed rather than a mere technocratic or political approach,” he said at the two-day conclave starting from Saturday.

Correspondent IMPHAL, MAY 28: Manipur chief minister N Biren Singh on Saturday cautioned against external forces attempting to ruin the peaceful coexistence among the different communities living in harmony in the state. Addressing a gathering after a ‘Mass Plantation Drive’ at Kangpokpi district headquarters, Singh said that indigenous Kukis are the bonafide citizens of India and urged the people not to let any external influence ruin the peaceful coexistence among various communities of the state. “We should prevent illegal migrants from settling among us,” he said. She said that by lifting the draconian law from parts of the state, it cannot be said that the atrocities meted

out by the security forces are over. At the same time, she alleged that the present government was enticing some Meira Paibi leaders. They were even used in the electioneering. “This is not a good sign. We should not succumb to their temptation,” she said. She further stated despite the government’s war on drugs, drug menaces continued to drag the youths

The senior diplomat said rivers have different contexts and dimensions and “all these aspects need to be taken into consideration for formulating policies surrounding it”. From political context to economic and historical and cultural dimensions to its role in the sustenance of human life, a single river system fulfils different roles, he said. Doraiswami also highlighted importance of management of river systems in totality rather than dividing them into different basins and dealing with the aspects in isolation. Notably, India and Bangladesh share 54 common rivers. Former Bangladesh’s High Commissioner to India Syed Muazzem Ali had in 2019 said the subject of water sharing during the

increase in the spread of hate speeches in various social media platforms, Singh said that it must be immediately put to a stop. Such activities will create communal tension among the communities of the state, he added. On the other hand, the chief minister stated that no government can function without the support of the people. Cooperation of the people is a must for good governance. Singh called upon the people and stakeholders to protect the reserved forests while appealing to them to plant trees in their villages and habited areas too. The chief minister, who earlier took part in the mass plantation drive at Kanglatongbi- Kangpokpi reserved

forest areas under the aegis of state forest department, was disappointed on witnessing road construction at reserved forest areas. Singh said he was really surprised at why the forest department and the government officials didn’t stop such constructions which eventually helped smugglers to take away timbers easily. Maintaining that it was human nature to access the nearest available resources, he urged the officials of the forest department and the Kangpokpi deputy commissioner to identify and classify areas such as reserved forests, protected forests, etc. and restrict human activities in such areas as per relevant laws.

lean season has been an important issue. The Teesta deal was set to be signed during the then Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s visit to Bangladesh in September 2011, but was postponed at the last minute due to objections raised by West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. She opposed the pact maintaining that people in her region would “not get a single drop”. The conclave is an international ministerial-level river conference to articulate a collective vision of cooperation in the Bay of Bengal and the South-East Asian region. The third edition of the programme - Natural Allies in Development and Interdependence - is being organised by Shillong-based think tank Asian Confluence in collaboration with the External Affairs Ministry, Act East Policy Affairs Department of the Assam government, North Eastern Council and other partners. who are the future pillars into the pool of death. Only the seizure of drugs and the peddlers will not be able to bring an end to the drug menaces. Drug lords were still free. “Who protects them is a big question,” Mema said . Other leaders who spoke on the occasion, recalled how the Meira Paibi movement came to existence in the state.

They said that though it was originally started as a movement against atrocities committed by security forces with impunity under AFSPA and to check rampant alcohol consumption, the Meira Paibi movement now covered almost all issues facing the society. The present movement of Manipur popularly known as Meira Paibi movement was a multifaceted movement dealing with several issues, they observed. Meira Paibi organisations were playing an important role in curbing crimes against women and children including human trafficking, they added. Understanding the need for unity in the society and elaborating on the present problems faced by Manipuri women, they called for oneness to stand together in safeguarding the society. Like they fought against atrocities meted out by the security forces, women of the state must play an active role in combating menaces of trafficking and abuse of drugs, they

observed. They claimed that youths killed by drugs were much more than those killed by guns. Meira Paibi day was observed in the state to commemorate the death of one famous woman revolutionist, Sinam Priyari on May 28, 1980. Priyari led the movement and encouraged all other women to stand together against the heinous crimes and act during her lifetime.

KOLKATA, MAY 28 (PTI): Scientists of the Zoological Survey of India (ZSI) have discovered a new macaque species in Arunachal Pradesh. T h e n ew s p e c i e s, named ‘Sela Macaque’ (Macaca selai), was found in western and central parts of the state, ZSI director Dhriti Banerjee said. “Scientists collected a few samples and undertook a detailed phylogenetic analysis and we found this monkey is genetically different from the other species in the region,” she said. The new species is se parated from the Arunachal macaque of Tawang district by Sela Pass, Banerjee said. ZSI scientist Mukesh Thakur said the Sela Pass acted as a barrier and prevented migration between the two macaque species for around two million years. The Sela macaque is genetically closer to the Arunachal macaque and both species have many similar physical characteristics such as heavy built and long dorsal body hair, he said. However, there are also some distinct mor-

phological characteristics, he said. The Arunachal macaque has a dark face and dark brown colour coat, while the Sela macaque has a pale face and brown colour coat, Thakur said. Some troops in both species are habituated to human presence while others avoid human proximity, he said. Villagers have claimed that Sela macaque is a major cause of crop damage in West Kameng district, he said. The study on the new macaque species has been published in the Molecular Phylogenetics and Evolution journal.

Made efforts to build India of Gandhi, Patel: Modi

RAJKOT, MAY 28 (PTI): Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday said that in the last eight years, his government made an honest attempt to build the India that Mahatma Gandhi and Sardar Patel dreamt of, and added that it worked to protect the dignity of the poor during this period. Modi, who completed eight years in office as prime minister on May 26, also said that he did not spare any effort in serving the country and did not indulge in anything that would make the people of the country hang their heads in shame. He was addressing a gathering after inaugurating a 200-bed multi-specialty hospital in Atkot town of Gujarat’s Rajkot district. During his speech, he gave an account of the work his government carried out in the last eight years. “I have spared no effort in the service to the nation in the last eight years. I have neither allowed, nor personally not done any work that will make you or even a

single person of India hang their head in shame. In the last eight years, we have made an honest attempt to build the India of Mahatma Gandhi and Sardar Patel’s dream,” he said. “Mahatma Gandhi wanted an India in which the poor, Dalits, adivasi and women are empowered, where cleanliness and health are part of life, where economy is based on swadeshi (local) solutions,” Modi said, adding that his government

has worked for all this. In the last eight years, pucca houses were provided to over three crore families; 10 crore families were saved from the ignominy of open defecation (by way of constructing toilets), nine crore women were saved from the adverse impact of smoke (by providing LPG connections); electricity connections were provided to 2.5 crore families and tap water connections were given to six crore families; over 50

crore people are covered to get free treatment (under PMJAy insurance scheme), Modi said. “These are not just figures, but this is a proof of our commitment to provide dignity to the poor of the country. In the last eight years, my government has worked for the uplift of the poor,” he said. “With the mantra of ‘Sabka saath, sabka vikas, sabka vishwas aur sab ka prayas’ (everyone’s support, everyone’s development and everyone’s trust), we have given new direction to the development of the country,” Modi said. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the government opened the food grain stocks for the poor, he said. “As the pandemic started, people faced difficulties in getting the food supplies. So we opened up the food grain stock of the country for the poor people. We provided financial assistance into the Jan Dhan bank accounts of women during the pandemic. We opened our

Transfer of IAS couple: Centre acted, as Delhi govt failed PUNE, MAY 28 (PTI): Union Sports Minister Anurag Thakur on Saturday said the Delhi government failed to act against the IAS couple over their alleged misuse of sports stadium in the national capital, but the Ministry of Home Affairs transferred them to give a strong message that such facilities are meant for sportspersons. Inaugurating the Khashaba Jadhav Sports Complex spread over 27 acres in the Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU) campus, he also said that traditional games of India, like mallakhamb, will be taken to the international level in future. “There should be more competitions for sportspersons and they shouldn’t only practice. This will help the sportspersons in testing their mental toughness. Grounds and facilities are made, but there are also restrictions

imposed on some people. Recently in Delhi, an IAS officer with his wife was using the stadium, while the sportspersons were kept outside. It is a very unfortunate incident,” he said. The Delhi government did not take any action against them. But Union home minister (Amit Shah) and the department took ac-

tion against them and they were transferred to give a strong message that stadiums are meant for sportspersons, he said. “There should be rules and they should be followed. Let everyone play, but professional athletes should be given preference. There should be no political interference,” Thakur, who is also the Information and

Broadcasting and Youth Affairs Minister, said. The Centre on Thursday shunted IAS couple Sanjeev Khirwar and Anu Dugga to Ladakh and Arunachal Pradesh, respectively, following media reports about the misuse of facilities at Thyagraj Stadium by them. Khirwar was then posted as Principal Secretary (Revenue) in Delhi. He also stressed the need to have “healthy sports competitions” between universities and states, among others. Talking about the traditional games, the minister said that at the Khelo India event in Bengaluru, people were interested in watching mallakhamb. “In future, these kind of traditional games will be taken to the International level. We are trying to have traditional games at all the sports facilities,” he said.

health services for all those who suffered,” Modi said. “And when the vaccine came, we ensured that every Indian gets vaccinated and that too free,” Modi said. He said he did not study poverty from books or through television as he himself went through the phase. Modi, whose visit to his home state comes around six months before the Assembly polls, said the double engine government (at Centre and state) has ensured fast-paced growth of Gujarat, which he asserted was not the case before 2014. “Due to the double engine government, Gujarat is achieving new heights of development. Before 2014, things were different. If we sent any development project files to the Centre (UPA government), they used to reject. They could not see any development project...,” he said. State assembly elections are scheduled in Gujarat in December.

M U M B A I , M AY 2 8 (AGENCIES): The investigating officer in the drugson-cruise case was “motivated to somehow implicate Aryan Khan”, an enquiry by a special investigation team of Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) has found. The team was probing the initial investigation into the drugs case led by the anti-drugs agency’s former zonal director Sameer Wankhede. Aryan Khan, son of superstar Shah Rukh Khan, was arrested in October after a drugs raid on a cruise ship off the Mumbai coast. He was later granted bail. Yesterday, his name was cleared in the case as the NCB’s 6,000-page chargesheet, naming 14 accused, doesn’t mention him. “It appears I.O. was motivated to somehow implicate Aryan Khan in the drugs case. Punjab Police withdraws security of 424 people CHANDIGARH, MAY 28 (PTI): The Punjab Police has ordered the withdrawal of security of 424 people, including former MLAs, Jathedars of two Takhts, heads of Deras, and police officers. The additional director general of police (security), however, said in an order on Friday that the security personnel were “being withdrawn on a purely temporary basis in connection with an emergent law and order duty”. Prominent among the Sikh temporal authorities to have lost the security cover is Giani Harpreet Singh, Jathedar of Takht Damdama Sahib in Bathinda. He also holds the charge of Jathedar of Akal Takht, the highest temporal seat of Sikhs. The personnel deployed to protect former MLA and BJP leader Fatehjang Bajwa, former minister Tikshan Sood and BJP chief spokesperson Anil Sareen have also been called back.

mention here that courts sometimes cast aspersion on the motives of investigating officers if courts believe that the I.O. was motivated,” the internal report added. It also said that Ary-

The drugs-on-cruise case had snowballed into a political controversy after Maharashtra minister Nawab Malik accused Mr Wankhede of trying to frame Aryan Khan.

Addressing a press conference at the BJP headquarters here, its national general secretary Arun Singh hailed Prime Minister Narendra Modi as a “reliable, popular, decisive, sacrificing and ascetic leader,” and said that the entire nation is standing with him. He said the BJP will be celebrating the Modi government’s eighth anniversary for a fortnight starting from May 30. “From May 30 to June 14, the party will organise public outreach on the theme of the service, good governance, and poor welfare fortnight across the country, as these have been the priority of the Prime Minister Modi-led govern-

And in case the Governor disagrees to clear the bill then the state government might introduce the new system through an ordinance, the source added. The state government has already announced that they might adopt this ordinance route in case of the proposed bill on replacement of the Governor with the Chief Minister. The proposal was cleared by the cabinet on May 26 and a formal announcement on this count was made by Basu on the same day.

OPINION/EDITORIAL

Nagaland Post VOL. XXXII NO. 172 DIMAPUR, SUNDAY, MAY 29, 2022

Boot on the other foot

F

inally justice was put on track after the Narcotic Control Bureau (NCB) Friday gave a clean chit to Aryan Khan and 14 others in the Cordelia drugs case related to the October 2021 raid on a Goa-bound cruise ship. The NCB raid was led by highly controversial Sameer Wankhede, who was then the agency’s Mumbai zonal director. The dismissal of the case against Aryan and others, has clearly put controversial IRS officer Sameer Wankhede in deep trouble as it meant that he had subjected the suspects to ordeal, indignity and mental trauma on account of falsified charges. The superstar’s son (Aryan) was earlier released on bail on October 30,2021. Aryan’s name interestingly, does not figure in the NCB’s 6000-page chargesheet. An interesting facet about the controversial Sameer Wankhede was revealed by NCP minister Nawab Malik, who had claimed the NCB raid was fake and an attempt to extort money from leading film stars. Malik had also alleged that Wankhede was a Muslim but had submitted a forged caste certificate to the at the time of taking the central services examination and seeking appointment to a post reserved for Scheduled Caste. The NCP minister had also accused him of fraudulently securing a licence for a bar and restaurant in Navi Mumbai over two decades ago. Following Malik’s complaint, the district caste verification committee conducted a probe and submitted its report. In the probe into the bar licence complaint, Thane collector found that Wankhede, though ineligible as he was then 17-years-old, had secured the permit on October 27, 1997. The bar licence was cancelled as per the provisions of the Maharashtra Prohibition Act and a case was filed against Wankhede. Now, the Mumbai district caste certificate scrutiny committee has summoned Wankhede on June 8. Wankhede has challenged the proceedings before the district committee, but the inquiry is still on. He has moved the Bombay HC challenging the Thane collector’s report and the criminal proceedings. This is the background of the so-called NCB zonal director and once touted as the rising start of the inspector raj. To add to the twist, Sameer Wankhede had utilised the services of another notorious offender Kiran Gosavi who was seen arresting Aryan Khan. Gosavi was utilised by Wankhede as a witness in the Aryan Khan case extensively and both were seen in several photos after Aryan Khan’s arrest. However after Gosavi’s selfie with Aryan inside the NCB office had gone viral, it came to the fore that Gosavi had multiple cases against him and was a wanted accused. Gosavi was arrested by Kelva police in Palghar in December 2021 for allegedly duping two persons of Rs 1.65 lakh by promising them a job in Malaysia and leaving them stranded at a Kerala airport. He had also been earlier arrested by the Pune police in November 2021 in another cheating case. As Nawab Malik began to let loose serious allegations against Wankhede, the Aryan Khan case turned into a political slugfest between the SS-led MVC coalition and BJP. Nawab Malik was subsequently arrested by the Enforcement Directorate in a money laundering case. The Maharashtra BJP had initially batted for Wankhede but Mukul Rohtagi, Aryan’s lawyer put up a spirited defence. Mukul Rohatagi is a Senior Counsel in the Supreme Court and former Attorney General of India. Now the accuser –Wankhede- has become the accused and justice will be fully achieved if such chameleons are brought to book.

DailyDevotion Unquestioned Revelation

In that day you will ask Me nothing. —John 16:23

When is “that day”? It is when the ascended Lord makes you one with the Father. “In that day” you will be one with the Father just as Jesus is, and He said, “In that day you will ask Me nothing.” Until the resurrection life of Jesus is fully exhibited in you, you have questions about many things. Then after a while you find that all your questions are gone— you don’t seem to have any left to ask. You have come to the point of total reliance on the resurrection life of Jesus, which brings you into complete oneness with the purpose of God. Are you living that life now? If not, why aren’t you? “In that day” there may be any number of things still hidden to your understanding, but they will not come between your heart and God. “In that day you will ask Me nothing”— you will not need to ask, because you will be certain that God will reveal things in accordance with His will. The faith and peace of John 14:1 has become the real attitude of your heart, and there are no more questions to be asked. If anything is a mystery to you and is coming between you and God, never look for the explanation in your mind, but look for it in your spirit, your true inner nature— that is where the problem is. Once your inner spiritual nature is willing to submit to the life of Jesus, your understanding will be perfectly clear, and you will come to the place where there is no distance between the Father and you, His child, because the Lord has made you one. “In that day you will ask Me nothing.”

NAGALAND POST, DIMAPUR SUNDAY, MAY 29, 2022

March to 2047 - BJP targets poor; rides economic feat I n the 75th year of Independence, the BJP is setting the goals to work continuously till the centenary, 2047, riding on its strong eight years of reign ‘ensuring ease of living’ for the poor and the middle class. The goal is set by Prime Minister Narendra Modi at his address to party workers in Jaipur and the strategy finalized for “Sewa, Sushashan and Gareeb Kalyan” campaign. The party and the government carved out an intense blitzkrieg of publicity, one-to-one contact with a view to capturing all the states that are not in its fold. Too ambitious but with 744 central schemes and 72 sponsored programmes and millions of cadre across the states it finds the task tough but not difficult. Even march to Dakshin – the South – is part of its yatra. Its senior dedicated leaders are carving out strategies in Chhattisgarh, Telangana and Andhra. The Rs31,500 core project stones laid by Modi in Chennai targets Tamilnadu. But would TN chief minister MK Stalin let it happen! None knows politics accepts strange bedfellows. The massive campaign

is to make all believe in its economic feat, improvements in living standards, digital economy inclusion of the poor, a caring government for a grand success by 2024 in Lok Sabha and at least 16 states that go to the polls in the next two years. The thrust of the BJP in government or the party would be to focus on the wider benefits that the programmes like DBT, PM Kisan and Swachha Bharat, universal vaccination, various pension and employment schemes, including Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee. The core would be nineplus programmes that have touched the neo-aspirant classes. They reach the households and is said to make qualitative difference to the living conditions. It is not aspiration but the basic needs like Har Ghar Jal (Jal Jeevan Mission), Har Ghar Shauchalay (Swach Bharat Mission), Har Ghar Bijli (Saubhagya Yojana), Har Ghar Gas Cylinder (Ujjwala Yojana ), Har Ghar Ration (Gareeb Kalyan Yojana), Har Ghar Bank account (Jan Dhan Yojana), Har Ghar Swasthya (Ayushman

Ten states will form new governments in 2023 and four states that are to have election by June 2024 may cast vote with the Lok Sabha elections. An election is a tough game so the party is taking its blitz to booth level, according to BJP president JP Nadda. India’s international standing, prime minister’s charisma in foreign lands, the success at Quad or the Pacific meet would all be told to the people. Possibility of wheat exports managing critical power situation and creation of jobs through Mudra, Skill India, Rs 15 lakh crore Jandhan, the latest National Family Health Survey figures about the amelioration of the people’s living conditions. Subtly the Hindutva icing may cap it. The BJP stress is more on man-to-man contact by lakhs of party workers up to remotest villages to explain to the people what the party has done for them beyond the free food dole that is sustaining 80 crore people. Thousands of groups would

carry on the re-education of the masses in all states. How big is the splash is anybody’s guess. The UPA government too had splurged Rs 2658 crore as per official statements on publicity. During the eight years the BJP has also spent a substantial sum. To cite the extent it would be suffice to say that an election to last Delhi assembly had a splurge of Rs 170 crore by BJP and opposition together. The cost was Rs 5500 crore in 2017 UP elections, according to Centre for Media Studies (CMS). And this surpassed Rs 8000 crore in 2021 UP elections, according to reports. In West Bengal elections in 2021, the publicity expenses were estimated around Rs 500 crore. The early start by the BJP will pressurise its opponents to match the splurge to remain relevant. The central government spent Rs 1698 crore on publicity and advertisements between 2018 and 2021 for print and electronic media. The party has different statewise budget. The campaign for the next 25 years is ambitious, not easy and aims at changing the gamut of Indian politics.

Post-mortem

A Collective Stand, Need of the hour

F

ellow Nagas: This is a time where all Nagas of Nagaland, no matter which Tribe we belong, MUST wake up together…and I mean…REALLY WAKE UP TOGETHER…to the diabolical reality that is intricately being woven into the much touted Framework Agreement by the NSCN (IM) and attempting to have it reinforced through their secret “Competency Clauses”. The Nagas of Nagaland are heading towards irrevocable disaster and the devastating consequences will not only impact us directly but upon all our children and all their children’s children for generations to come if the final settlement gets concluded in its present frame as is deviously being designed by the NSCN (IM). This is dishonesty at its best and an outright betrayal of trust in clear sight as will be seen when you read on! It is therefore not the time for emotional fantasy about us as ‘Nagas without borders’ wanting to live with each other within the same all-encompassing boundary when the ground reality is going to be entirely different without territorial integration, however much we all want it to be so. The thoughts that I have repeatedly shared in the past reflects the ground reality of what is about to happen to the Nagas of Nagaland…if the final settlement is arrived at…AS IT IS. It is now incumbent upon every responsible Nagas of Nagaland to try comprehending and evaluating the unfolding reality pragmatically not emotionally. When NSCN (IM) proclaims that “the State of Nagaland will cease to exist because it will be-

T

come a Naga Nation” …understand that this is being emphasised by the NSCN (IM) without territorial/geographical integration. The face value of a ‘Naga Nation’ may sooth the emotional sentiment of many gullible Nagas of Nagaland…but at ground zero what does this really mean? It simply means that our Naga brothers of Manipur, Arunachal and Assam will share equal rights as citizens of this ‘Naga Nation’ with the Nagas of Nagaland while at the same time enjoy their exclusive privileges within their Autonomous Regional Territorial Council…being conceded by the GoI because of the fact that there will be no territorial integration in the final settlement. This starkly exposes the bottomline of the intent of our Southern brothers in the NSCN (IM) which emphatically registers their ruthless philosophic intent that says “mine is mine, yours is ours”. The determined uncompromising stand on the ‘Naga Flag’ is another issue that can only be seen as an additional ploy to reinforce our Southern brothers’ plan to entrench themselves in Nagaland…that will be declared as a ‘Naga Nation’ with this ‘Flag’ to confirm it in the post settlement era. Mark my word…the implication can be very damning which perhaps will go to the extent of our Southern brothers claiming their rights to even contest election in Nagaland, with their kitchen still in Manipur, because according to NSCN (IM), Nagaland will become a ‘Naga Nation’ for all Nagas irrespective of where they live. It also strongly indicates that our Southern brothers are working

extra hard to get a foothold in Nagaland to legitimately become the Prime Minister/Chief Minister in this make-believe Naga Nation… that suits Mr. Th Muivah’s situation very snugly. Otherwise the ‘Naga Flag’ becomes a symbol of irrelevance in a ‘shared sovereignty’ status within the Indian Constitution and in the absence of integration. Under this stated circumstance of reality, it is not worth stalling the peace process for. Let us now take a closer look at the crafty web being woven into the structure of Pan Naga Hoho (PNH). The so-called “Naga Nation” will have two Houses: (1): the Upper House and (2): the Lower House. The latter will be represented by the elected members. The former will be manned by nominated representatives. According to NSCN (IM), PNH will have an absolute empowerment to nominate members into the Upper House. Now, any Bills that are to be passed by the Lower House will mandatorily require the approval of the Upper House without which such Bills cannot become an Act. What does this imply? Our Southern brothers of Manipur knows that they will hold a majority status within the PNH…as was prevalent in the present nonentity Naga Hoho… from where all the 14 Tribes of Nagaland had walked out. They however want to replicate the same platform in the form of PNH and control the lives of the Nagas of Nagaland through their loyal nominated members of the Upper House…in the aftermath of the final settlement. It is with

such a stranglehold control being envisaged that people like Gen. Ningkhan Shimray in a consultative meeting on the role of Youth in Nation Building on 18th May 2022 at Ukhrul concluded his speech by saying (quote): “Pan Naga Hoho is the highway to freedom” (Unquote). It certainly is for our southern brothers but equally certainly not for the Nagas of Nagaland. Can any Nagas of Nagaland in their right senses accept such a settlement as an honourable settlement? And yet here we are all aggressively rooting for an early settlement without understanding the dangerous consequences it will bring in its aftermath. It is on this analogy that I have repeatedly been hammering home my point of view that it is imperative for NSCN (IM) to come out openly with their “Competency Clauses” like the other NNPGs have and let the stakeholders know exactly what their future is going to be BEFORE the final agreement with the GoI and NOT AFTER the deed is done! This is a firm collectively stand that all the Tribes of Nagaland must take to safeguard our future and the future of our younger generations at all cost. It is in this context that the Nagas of Nagaland have no choice but to take a look back at our History of National Movement that amply records the fact that our Southern brothers of Manipur declined to join the movement when the Nagas needed them the most. Yet today they have a stranglehold on not only the organization called NSCN (IM) but also spearheading the negotiation with the GoI…try-

ing to decide the fate of the Nagas of Nagaland without letting us know exactly what our future is going to look like. On this issue I have absolutely no reservation in supporting the views of Uncle S.C. Jamir that our Southern brothers should find their exclusive solution in Manipur and leave the fate of Nagas of Nagaland to our own… since it is certain that integration is not going to be a part of the solution. The Nagas of Nagaland is more than capable of taking care of its own. Apart from the obnoxious burden of uncontrolled multiple taxation/extortion, we are tired of all the half truth being peddled for decades. Nagas of Nagaland have been magnanimous in not disowning our southern brothers though tradition would have it otherwise and it is incumbent upon them to honestly acknowledge this fact and tread more honourably…not with such questionable intent as has been reflected above. It’s about time for the NSCN (IM) to stop all their deadly clandestine non-transparent manoeuvres and come out in the open showing due respect to the stakeholders as is rightly theirs. Having said that, it is also equally the responsibility of the Nagas of Nagaland to put the whole picture on a canvas and seriously consider whether such scenery can be considered as an acceptable solution for the Nagas of Nagaland. If not…then learn to stand up for what we believe is right without fear or favour. Khekiye K. Sema IAS (Retd) 3rd Mile Thilixu Village; Dimapur, Nagaland

Nagaland dedicated to God

he pre-Gospel era of Nagas was an animistic darkness. The power of the gospel began to transform the Nagas beginning from 1872 and it continued to ripple in a spectacular rate of movement. The new faith gained the ground resulting in ‘Christians in majority’ by turn of 1990s. The Gospel liberated Nagas from the bondage of old ritually superstitious religion. The eyes of the remote Nagas were now opened to see who they were with spiritual and social aspiration that led them to a new future. Hence, the Gospel brought them manifold blessings. God Nagas Have Chosen Like and unlike many nations, the Nagas were right when they dedicated their land to the sovereign God, the Lord Jesus Christ. They chose the God in whom they have their allegiance, not their former or minor gods, territorial

spirits or deities. With the dedication, ‘Nagaland for Christ’ was coined as their slogan. It is a historic and prophetic declaration to announce their spiritual choice. Hence, the nomenclature became their emblem to identify that they have chosen Jesus Christ like people who chose Krishna for Hindus, Buddha for Buddhists and Mahavir for Jains. Representing the minds and interest of the Nagas, the slogan conveys a dimension of 1. Subjectively, acknowledging what good work Christ has done for them and what good work they can do for Jesus. 2. Objectively, what Nagas want to tell others beyond about what God had done for them and a beautiful thing that they can do for them as a healed person. 3. Imperatively, what responsibility the Nagas have in response to what God wants them to do with a willing heart of obedience.

The term is a nondiscriminative or an antagonistic name. It is neither exclusivism nor political attention in it. It is both inclusivism and accommodative in scope. It does not force people out but invite people in. It is a spiritual and holistic nomenclature. It conveys a desire for equality, honesty and holiness in practice based on biblical principle of following the ‘Prince of Peace.’ Evidence of ‘Nagaland for Christ’ The veteran Nagas, succeeding leaders and current generation can all testify about the work of God in the life and journey of the Nagas among which the followings may be a few evidences: *The Ten Commandments were memorized and emphasized upon in our hearts. *The miracles of God guided the Nagas in the journey of their political struggles. *The land became a

land of Christians through a series of revival movement. *Church buildings dominate all conspicuous points throughout the land. *Theological colleges mushroomed for Christian education with many graduates every year within and outside. *The land became a missionary land by both sending and supporting. *Churches are established and organized from villages to State level. *Undeniable Christian influence in society, schools, politics, and public life. *Elected leaders are Christians backed with prayers. *By and large, Nagaland is known as a land of Christians. A Forward Journey Every Naga will agree that ‘Nagaland is a land of Christians’ (a state of Christian majority). The banner ‘Nagaland for Christ’ may not outstandingly appear or be advertised at Nagaland

entry points like airport, train station and transport entries since it is a matter of spiritual vision hereafter. The qualities and trends that will reflect the uniqueness of Nagaland are: 1. Spiritual Wellbeing Beyond church building fashion, assurance of eternal life is evidenced in peace, holiness and honest living in any profession at any place. 2. Q u a l i t y o f t h e Land It is evidenced by Christian quality in governing public affairs with honesty and integrity including total liquor prohibition and absolute Clean Election. 3. Biblical Truth in School Education System Christian boys and girls have every right to differentiate the foundation of their faith and heritage from relativistic theories and hypotheses they learn in schools. This can be introduced by the legislation of Nagaland. 4. Missionary zeal

In response to the command of Jesus and as compassion, Naga churches have zeal to take the Gospel to people where they need to hear yet through holistic and integrated methods like education and social services where relevant. 5. Healthy coexistence As children of the Prince of Peace, Nagas must live in peace and unity internally with each other and externally with our neighbours and human community. Living in a land dedicated to the sovereign God, let us conscientiously walk and live in peace and love. You will not like to make our land a home of quarrels, hatred and brawlilng. The beauty is within your heart. Let our land be full of the knowledge of God as water covers the sea (Isaiah 11:9). May God bless Nagaland! Rev. Dr. Phuveyi Dozo Naga United Village

BJP protecting those spreading hatred against Muslims: Jamiat DEOBAND (UP), MAY 28 (PTI): A Deoband-based prominent Muslim body on Saturday accused the BJP government of protecting people engaged in poisoning the majority community’s mind in the country. Jamiat Ulama-e-Hind made the allegation, expressing concern over the alleged spread of communalism and saying that the government is turning a blind eye to the people spreading hatred against the minority community in various meetings. It claimed that the country’s unity is being hampered in the name of “false nationalism”, which is dangerous not only for Muslims but the entire country. Jamiat Ulama-e-Hind, in a meeting of its management committee, also passed a resolution urging the Centre to “forthwith stop activities of such elements, spreading communalism and messages which are not only against Muslims and Islam but all people believing in democracy, justice and equality”. The resolution claimed that “the country is burning in a fire of religious animosity and hatred”. An effort is on to incite people of the country against each other, it claimed. Gehlot slams religious polarisation

JAIPUR, MAY 28 (PTI): Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot said on Saturday that being proud Hindus does not mean that they should bring down other religions and cause riots. Expressing concern over religious polarisation, the CM said it is not in the interest of the country in the long run. “Fights, riots and bloodshed is not good for the country,” he said addressing a gathering here. “We are all proud that we are Hindus but it does not mean that we should bring down other religions, fight and cause riots,” he said, stressing that it is innocent people who die in violence while the culprits run away. Such rioters should be identified and socially boycotted, only then we will be able to live with each other with love and affection, he stressed. The chief minister also expressed confidence that the Congress will once again come to power in the state in the next year’s Assembly polls.

It said, “Obscene and baseless charges are being spread against Muslims, ancient Muslim rulers and Islamic culture and civilization.” “The relevant governments on the other hand are encouraging such people by either siding with them or leaving them to roam free instead of taking legal action against them,” the Muslim body said in its resolution. Spreading communal hatred and inciting the religious feelings of the majority community against minorities with a motive to continue one’s political hegemony are not only against the loyalty to and interest of the country but an open enmity with it,” the resolution said.

NEW DELHI, MAY 28 (PTI): Child rights NGOs have flagged a sharp rise in the number of children who have gone missing in the last two years due to the social impact of COVID-19. In order to prevent the situation for worsening, the organisations have called for the immediate strengthening of child protection committees at the village level, sensitising and training parents, and urged the government to make adequate budget allocation in this connection. As per the latest figures of the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), 59,262 children went missing in India in 2020. With 48,972 children remaining untraced from the previous years, the total number of missing children has gone up to 1,08,234. There is almost a 13 times rise in the number of cases of missing children reported annually between 2008 and 2020, the NCRB said. As per the data, 7,650

cases of missing children were reported in 2008. In the last two years, Bachpan Bachao Andolan (BBA), Kailash Satyarthi Foundation’s sister organisation alone has rescued around 12,000 children from across the country Dhananjay Tingal, its executive director, said. “This is ample proof to show that after the pandemic, child trafficking has increased manifold,” he told PTI. On average, 29 children in Madhya Pradesh and 14 in Rajasthan went missing every day in 2021, according to a new report by NGO Child Rights and You (CRY), which gathered the information through RTIs. Tingal said some children were being trafficked with the consent of their parents, while few others voluntarily went with the traffickers. “Ultimately, a large majority of these children went missing,” he said.

Fresh plea in SC challenges validity of sections of Places of Worship Act, 1991

NEW DELHI, MAY 28 (PTI): A fresh petition has been filed in the Supreme Court challenging the validity of certain sections of the Places of Worship (Special Provisions) Act, 1991, alleging that they violate constitutional provisions, including those related to equality before law and prohibition of discrimination on grounds of religion, race, caste, sex or place of birth. The plea said that by the Act, the Centre has declared that religious character of a place of worship and pilgrimage as it existed on August 15, 1947 shall continue and barred the remedy by way of suit with respect to such matter in any court. The petition, filed by Mathura-resident Devkinandan Thakur, has challenged the validity of sections 2, 3, 4 of the 1991 Act claiming that it takes away right of judicial remedy of Hindus, Jains, Buddhists and Sikhs to take back their places of worship and pil-

Hijab row: All should abide by HC order, says Bommai

BENGALURU, MAY 28 (PTI): With the hijab issue resurfacing in Mangaluru, Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai on Saturday asserted that every one should abide by the High Court and the government’s orders. Stating that the issue has been closed after the syndicate meeting at Mangalore University, he asked students to focus on education instead of getting into such issues. “There is no need to create hijab controversy (again), the court has given its order, all have to abide by the court and the government’s order. Majority of them, about 99.99 per cent of them, are following it. The syndicate’s resolution

is also that court order has to be followed...according to me, studies should be important for students,” Bommai said. Speaking to reporters here, he said, “The matter has been closed after a meeting yesterday. There was a university syndicate meeting.” Mangalore University Vice Chancellor Prof. P Subrahmanya Yadapadithaya had said on Friday that the college will facilitate admission of Muslim girl students in other institutions if they insist on wearing hijab inside classrooms. The Vice-Chancellor had said that students wearing hijab will be counselled and an attempt will be made to convince them regard-

ing the need for attending the classes without the headscarf. The hijab issue had once again come to the fore on Thursday as a group of students from the University College in Mangaluru staged a protest at the campus alleging that a few Muslim girl students are attending classes wearing the headscarf. The Karnataka High Court on March 15 dismissed petitions filed by a group of Muslim students, seeking permission to wear hijab inside classrooms. The three-judge bench of the court consisting of Chief Justice Ritu Raj Awasthi, Justice Krishna S Dixit and Justice J M Khazi further noted that the prescription of school uniform

is only a reasonable restriction, constitutionally permissible, which the students cannot object to. Following the High Court order, the Department of Pre-University Education has made uniforms prescribed by the College Development Committee, compulsory for Pre-University (PU) students from the 2022-23 academic year. It also states that in case no uniform is prescribed by the College Development Committee or management, students must wear a garment which will “maintain equality and unity, and which does not disturb public order”.

grimage and property which belong to the deity. “The injury caused to Hindus, Jains, Buddhists and Sikhs is extremely large because sections 2, 3, 4 of the Act has taken away the right to approach the court and thus right to judicial remedy has been closed,” said the plea, filed through advocate Ashutosh Dubey. While section 3 of the Act deals with bar of conversion of places of worship, section 4 pertains to declaration as to the religious character of certain places of worship and bar of jurisdiction of courts. The plea alleged that the Centre has “transgressed its legislative power” by barring remedy of judicial review which is a basic feature of the Constitution. “Hindus are fighting for restoration of birthplace of Lord Krishna from hundreds of years and peaceful public agitation continues but while enacting the Act, the Centre has excluded the

birthplace of Lord Ram at Ayodhya but not the birthplace of Lord Krishna in Mathura, though both are the incarnations of Lord Vishnu, the creator,” it said. The plea alleged that the Act is “void and unconstitutional” for many reasons and it infringes on the rights of Hindus, Jains, Buddhists and Sikhs to manage, maintain and administer the places of worship and pilgrimage. The plea has sought to declare that sections 2, 3 and 4 of the Act are void and unconstitutional for allegedly being violative of Articles 14 (equality before law), 15 (prohibition of discrimination on grounds of religion, race, caste, sex or place of birth), 21 (protection of life and personal liberty), 25 (freedom of conscience and free profession, practice and propagation of religion), 26 (freedom to manage religious affairs) and 29 (protection of interests of minorities).

power ministries did not immediately respond to a request seeking comment. Details on the presentation have not been previously reported. Coal inventories at power plants have declined by about 13% since April, which translates to eight days of coal requirement, the lowest level at this time of the year in at least nine years. The higher coal demand could also stifle efforts to build power plant inventories. India now expects the demand for coal from utilities to be 784.6 million tonnes for the year ending March 2023, the presentation showed, 3.3% higher than projected earlier. T h e p r o j e c t e d a nnual coal shortage is now 49.3 million tonnes, nearly three times the 17.7 million tonnes projected earlier, the presentation showed. India reconciled its coal demand projections after higher-than-expected power demand growth in April, when electricity use hit a record high due to soaring temperatures.

build up coal inventories through imports. However, one of the slides in the presentation showed that most states had yet to award contracts to import coal and that Indian utilities would run out of coal by July if no coal was imported. Only one state had awarded a contract to import coal as of end-April, a power ministry import status report reviewed by Reuters showed. India expects domestic coal supply of 154.7 million tonnes, 42.5 million tonnes short of the projected requirement of 197.3 million tonnes in the September quarter, the presentation showed. It previously expected a shortage of 37 million tonnes. The presentation was made on Friday in a virtual meeting in which the federal coal and power ministers were present, with top energy officials from the federal government and the states in attendance, according to two government officials familiar with the matter. NEW DELHI, MAY 28 (REUTERS): India is expected to face a wider coal shortage during the quarter ending September over expectations of higher power demand, an internal power ministry presentation seen by Reuters showed, worsening risks of widespread power outages. The energy-hungr y nation expects local coal supply to fall 42.5 million tonnes short of demand in the September quarter, 15% higher than previously projected, due to higher growth in power demand and lower output from some mines. The g rim forecast shows the extent of the fuel shortage in India, at a time when annual power demand is seen growing at the fastest rate in at least 38 years and global coal prices are trading at nearrecord levels due to a supply crunch resulting from the Russia-Ukraine crisis. NEW DELHI, MAY 28 (AGENCIES): While the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) is encouraging and facilitating innovation in the fintech space, it is also keeping a close eye on the emerging risks. “The central bank, while encouraging innovation, is also factoring in emerging risks in the fintech segment. Greater use of technology accentuates the concerns related to cyber security,” the RBI said in its annual report for 2021-22. Fintechs have disrupted the financial services space in terms of products, customer servicing, backend analytics, and delivery of services. “…such innovation first disrupts the market and once it establishes its constructive role, the regulators and authorities step in to regulate the space to nurture the innovation in a sustainable manner and to also mitigate any associated risks,” the RBI said. The RBI will also make changes in sectoral assessment in the context of the scale-based regulatory framework and roll out key risk indicators (KRIs) for NBFCs to assess their cybersecurity risk profile. An information technology (IT) examination for select NBFCs is also on the cards. The revised supervisory framework will include the implementation of a risk-based approach for KYC supervision of select NBFCs and guidelines on the compliance function. Chinese University faces backlash for trying to hold online swimming test B E I J I N G , M AY 2 8 (AGENCIES): In a bizarre recommendation, a Chinabased University asked students to appear for swimming tests “online” attracting backlash and outrage on the Twitter-like Chinese social media Weibo. According to Republicworld report, Shanghai University cited the ongoing COVID-19 wave that has hit China, as the reason to conduct the “virtual swimming test.” The institution also bizarrely asked students who had yet to complete a 50-metre swimming test before graduating to do so from home, without elaborating the procedure. While many students questioned the “swim at home” suggestion by the university to qualify for the test back home on the social platform, others mocked the guidelines. Some Chinese students posted videos of themselves diving into bed, wearing swimming goggles and a swim cap. While the institute was ridiculed, it said that the recent measures were in line with the government’s COVID-19 policies to “ensure that the graduation process proceeds smoothly” during the pandemic. A screenshot of the institute’s now-deleted notice on the website was taken and shared widely on social media. Most of Beijing’s top universities mandate its students to master swimming as the Chinese government considers it as an essential survival skill, according to the South China Morning Post. The commanding officer on scene - the Uvalde school district’s chief of police, who was not present at Friday’s news conference - believed the situation was no longer one involving an “active shooter”. The angry student continued, “Are the students supposed to swim in their bathtubs?” China has been struggling to contain a massive surge of COVID-19 cases in its second-largest city, Shanghai, where a stringent lockdown has been imposed. The other countries with over 10 million cases are Brazil (30,921,145), France (29,631,816), Germany (26,200,663), the UK (22,463,243), South Korea (18,067,669), Russia (18,048,085), Italy (17,355,119), Turkey (15,069,034), Spain (12,280,345) and Vietnam (10,715,247).

H O U S TO N, M AY 2 8 (IANS): Former US President Donald Trump said that the Washington government should prioritise funding for school security in the country rather than sending aid to the war-torn Ukraine. Trump made the remarks on Friday at the National Rifle Association’s (NRA) ongoing three-day annual convention in Houston, which comes just three days after the deadly shooting at the Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas, which claimed the lives of 19 children and two teachers. Addressing thousands of supporters, the former President said: “We spent trillions in Iraq and Afghanistan, and got nothing for it. Before we nation-build the rest of the world, we should be building safe schools for our own children in our own nation.” Trump also rejected calls for tightened gun controls, saying decent Americans should be allowed firearms to defend themselves against “evil”, the BBC reported. He instead proposed a “top-to-bottom overhaul” of school safety, with fortified single points of entry including metal detectors and at least one armed police officer on every campus.

Disease experts call on WHO, govts for more action on monkeypox

GENEVA, MAY 28 (REUTERS): Some prominent infectious disease experts are pushing for faster action from global health authorities to contain a growing monkeypox outbreak that has spread to at least 20 countries. They are arguing that governments and the World Health Organization should not repeat the early missteps of the Covid-19 pandemic that delayed the detection of cases, helping the virus spread. While monkeypox is not as transmissible or dangerous as Covid, these scientists say, there needs to be clearer guidance on how a person infected with monkeypox should isolate, more explicit advice on how to protect people who are at risk, and improved testing and contact tracing. “If this becomes endemic (in more countries), we will have another nasty disease and many difficult decisions to take,” said Isabelle Eckerle, a professor at the Geneva Centre for Emerging Viral Diseases in Switzerland. The WHO is considering whether the outbreak should be assessed as a potential public health emergency of international concern (PHEIC), an of-

COLOMBO, MAY 28 (PTI): As the ongoing anti-government protest demanding the resignation of Sri Lankan President Gotabaya Rajapaksa over the worst economic crisis entered its 50th day, organisers on Saturday said the day would be marked with more intense agitation marches with wider participation. Sri Lanka is near bankruptcy and has severe shortages of essentials from food, fuel, medicines and cooking gas to toilet paper and matchsticks. For months, people have been forced to stay in long lines to buy the limited stocks. Sri Lanka’s economic crisis has created political unrest with a protest occupying the entrance to the president’s office demanding his resignation continuing for the past 49 days. The crisis has already forced prime minister Mahinda Rajapaksa, the elder brother of the president, to resign on May 9. There has been an intense call for President Gotabaya Rajapaksa to also resign however, he has refused to do so. Saturday marks the 50th day of the “Go Rajapaksa” protest which has also seen the death of a parliamentarian.

She worries that talk of the virus being mild, as well as the availability of vaccines and treatments in some countries, “potentially leads to lazy behaviour from public health authorities.” More than 300 suspected and confirmed cases of monkeypox, a usually mild illness that spreads through close contact, causing flu-like symptoms and a distinctive rash, have been reported this month. Most have been in Europe rather than in the Central and West African countries where the virus is endemic. No deaths have been reported in the current outbreak. However, global health officials have expressed alarm over the growing outbreak in non-endemic countries. The WHO has said it expects numbers to rise as surveillance increases.

Russia takes small cities, aims to widen east Ukraine battle

K R A M AT O R S K (UKRAINE), MAY 28 (AP): Russia asserted Saturday that its troops and separatist fighters had captured a key railway junction in eastern Ukraine, the second small city to fall to Moscow’s forces this week as they fought to seize all of the country’s contested Donbas region. Russian Defense Ministry spokesman Igor Konashenkov said the city of Lyman had been “completely liberated” by a joint force of Russian soldiers and the Kremlin-backed separatists, who have waged war in the eastern region bordering Russia for eight years. Lyman, which had a population of about 20,000 before Russia invaded Ukraine on Feb. 24, serves as a regional railway hub. Ukraine’s train system has ferried arms and evacuated citizens during the war, and it wasn’t immediately clear how the development might affect either capability. Controlling the city would give the Russian military a foothold for advanc-

A WHO determination that an outbreak constitutes a global health emergency – as it did with Covid or Ebola – would help accelerate research and funding to contain a disease. “It is always under consideration, but no emergency committee as yet (on monkeypox),” Mike Ryan, director of the WHO’s health emergencies programme, said on the sidelines of the agency’s annual meeting in Geneva. However, experts say it is unlikely the WHO would reach such a conclusion soon, because monkeypox is a known threat the world has tools to fight. Discussing whether to set up an emergency committee, the body that recommends declaring a PHEIC, is just part of the agency’s routine response, WHO officials said. Police admit delay in Texas shooting

LONDON/ CHICAGO, MAY 28 (AGENCIES/ AP): Police made the “wrong decision” by failing to storm a primary school classroom in Uvalde, Texas, as a gunman killed 19 children inside, the top safety official has said. “If I thought it would help, I would apologise,” Steven McCraw said during a heated press conference on Friday, BBC reported. Officers delayed entering because they did not believe it was still an “active shooter” situation, he said. But pupils inside made multiple calls begging for police to come. Mr McCraw confirmed there had been a 40-minute gap from the police unit’s arrival at Robb Elementary School to the moment they decided to storm the classroom where the gunman had barricaded himself. The senior officer on the scene decided to wait until the school janitor arrived with the keys because they thought that either “no kids were at risk” by then, or “noone was living anymore”. The delayed response, combined with video footage showing frustrated parents outside the school being tackled and handcuffed by police while the gunman was still inside, has led to growing public anger and

Scientists sequence DNA of a man who died at Pompeii

Remains of a man who died when Mount Vesuvius erupted in 79 AD.

W

hen Mount Vesuvius erupted one summer morning in 79 AD, the Roman city of Pompeii — and most of its citizens — were frozen in time, buried beneath tons of volcanic ash. Since explorers rediscovered Pompeii in the 18th century, archeologists have gradually uncovered what life was like there. Now, for the first time, researchers have fully sequenced ancient DNA from an individual who died in Vesuvius’ blast. “It was really surprising that we can get this kind of result,” Gabriele Scorrano, an assistant professor of geogenetics at the University of Copenhagen and lead author of the study, told Insider, adding, “It looks like this kind of environment helped the preservation in some way.” In a study published Thursday in Scientific Reports, Scorrano and his team examined the remains of two individuals found

in Casa del Fabbro, or the House of the Craftsman, which was first discovered in 1933. One was a man in his late 30s at the time of his death, while the other set of remains belonged to a woman, who was older than 50. Researchers extracted ancient DNA from parts of the skulls of both sets of remains. Though the team sequenced DNA from both individuals, only the man’s skull yielded sufficient DNA for a full analysis, Scorrano said. Prior to this study, only short stretches of human and animal DNA from Pompeii had been sequenced. After comparing the sample against genomes from 1,030 ancient, and 471 modern Western Eurasian individuals, researchers found the man’s genome had similarities to modern central Italians, as well as to other groups living in Italy during the Roman Imperial age. However, some genes from the sample

matched genes commonly found in people who lived on the island of Sardinia, rather than on mainland Italy, which experts say suggests more genetic diversity across the Italy at the time. The sample also showed possible signs of tuberculosis of the spine, or Pott’s disease — which was endemic in Roman times, but is rare in the archaeological record, since the disease rarely leaves a mark on the bones. “It seems, according to the bioarchaeologist, that maybe this kind of disease didn’t allow them to try to escape,” Scorrano told Insider, adding, “They died in this position because they didn’t have the chance to run away.” Scorrano and his team hope their techniques can be applied to other victims caught in the flurry of ash nearly 2,000 years ago, in order to get a better snapshot of life in Pompeii before and during the disaster. “I think that our study makes the case for the further analysis of Pompeii individuals,” he told Insider, adding, “Normally, when you study a specific site, you have a range of dates. Here, it’s a picture of what happened 1 p.m., 24 August, 79 AD — we can really reach an understanding of the population at that time.” (Business Insider)

Swap Foods to Get a Healthy Heart and Waistline

W

hat you eat and drink can help save your ticker. Research shows your diet and weight, and other lifestyle habits, can prevent up to 80% of heart attacks and strokes. You don’t have to overhaul your kitchen to eat meals that are good for your heart and waistline. It can be as simple as trading one food for another. Vegetable Oil Instead of Butter When it comes to your heart, butter doesn’t make everything better. It’s a big source of saturated fat, which raises your level of artery-clogging LDL cholesterol. Cook with a vegetable oil instead, like olive, canola, corn, or safflower. They have healthier unsaturated fat. If you replace 5% of your daily calories from saturated fat with the unsaturated kind, you’ll cut your chance of heart disease by up to 25%. Whole Grains Instead of Refined Carbs Eat Heart Healthy A diet filled with the right kinds of food is key to preventing heart disease. Whole g rains are loaded with fiber, which helps to lower your LDL, or “bad,” cholesterol. One study says every 1-ounce serving you eat can reduce your chances of dying from heart disease by 9%. Plus, it takes your body longer to digest fiber, so you stay full longer. This may help you eat fewer calories and stay at the weight you should be. The American Heart Association recommends getting at least three servings of whole grains a day. To hit that mark, try these

substitutions: Have oatmeal instead of cream of wheat or corn flakes. Eat brown rice, wild rice, quinoa, or wholegrain barley rather than white rice. Replace at least half of the all-purpose flour in a recipe with the wholewheat kind. Po u l t r y, F i s h , o r Beans Instead of Beef At lunch, instead of a burger, go for chicken, turkey, or fish instead. Or try a dish made with beans. Baked or Broiled Instead of Fried Deciding how to make your fish for dinner? Do your heart a favor. Broil or bake it instead of frying it. When you fry food, the breading soaks up extra grease. That means you eat more fat, which often is the unhealthy saturated kind. This can add up: One study shows that people who eat fried foods one to three times a week are 24% more likely to have heart failure than those who have less than one serving a week. Spices Instead of Salt Before you reach for that salt shaker, head to the spice rack. Spices can add flavor and disease-fighting antioxidants without the extra sodium. Too much salt can raise your blood pressure. How much should you eat? Recommendations vary from 1,500 to 2,300 milligrams a day. Nuts Instead of Chips Dragging in the afternoon? At the vending machine, get mixed nuts rather than chips or pretzels. You’ll get a dose of fiber and heart-healthy unsaturated fat with your snack.

One study contends that munching on a serving of nuts each week cuts your risk of dying from heart disease by 8%. But remember, you can also add calories this way, so read the nutrition labels carefully to know how many are in each serving. Fruit Instead of Sugar Watch out for sugar that’s added to foods, like the sweetener baked into a cookie or the sugar you stir into your coffee. It tacks on calories without nutrients. This can lead to weight gain and obesity, which wears on your heart. To scale back the sweet stuff, go for fruit instead. You can also use a sugar substitute to cut back on calories. Also consider these trades: Top your cereal with fruit rather than sugar. Stir fresh berries into your yogurt instead of buying the flavored or fruiton-the-bottom kind. In place of ice cream, puree a banana in a food processor and freeze it for a creamy frozen treat. Avocado Instead of Mayonnaise The green fruit adds creaminess to that turkeyand-cheese sandwich without all of the saturated fat of mayo. Avocados have healthy unsaturated fat and nutrients that can boost

heart health. Flavored Water Instead of Soda It’s no secret that sugar-sweetened drinks, like soda, can lead to weight gain. They can also take a toll on your ticker. Just one can a day raises your risk of heart disease by 20%, a study published in the journal Circulation shows. Be careful about diet soda, too. Studies show people who drink it tend to make up for the missing calories by snacking on extra food. If you’re thirsty, pour a glass of water or unsweetened tea. Need a little flavor kick? Add a splash of 100% fruit juice to some sparkling water. You may want to avoid straight fruit juice because it’s a high source of sugar. Avoid Trans Fats This type of fat makes products stay fresh on the store shelf. It’s the worst kind for your heart. It lowers your HDL, or “good,” cholesterol, while raising the LDL, or “bad,” kind. The FDA has asked food companies to remove trans fats from their products. But they may still show up in items on your grocery list. So make sure you read the nutrition labels carefully. How Harrison Ford completed ‘Indiana Jones 5’ frame. During the Lucasfilm presentation during Star Wars Celebration on Thursday, Ford took the stage to honor legendary 90-year-old composer John Williams. Williams, who received an Oscar nomination for writing the seminal theme introduced in 1984’s Raiders of the Lost Ark, had just conducted an orchestra through a live performance of the tune when Ford arrived on stage. “That music follows me everywhere. ... That music was playing on the speakers in the operating room when I had my last colonoscopy,” the actor joked, before turning seri-

ous and commending Williams as both an exemplary musician and human. Ford then revealed that principal photography on Indy 5 had wrapped. “I’m really proud of the movie that we made,” the star said to thunderous applause. In an interview with Yahoo Enter tainment shortly afterwards, Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy showered Ford with praise for what he continued to bring to the beloved fedora-sporting swashbuckler — even as he nears his 80th birthday in July. L O N D O N , M AY 2 8 (AGENCIES): Jimmy Butler scored 47 points - a career play-off high - as Miami Heat beat Boston Celtics 111-103 to send the Eastern Conference finals to a decider. According to BBC report, the winner-takes-all tie is in Miami in the early hours of Monday (01:30 BST). With two minutes left the game was 99-99 before Butler’s three-pointer and three P.J. Tucker free throws allowed Heat to control the closing stages. “We know what we’re capable of. We get to take it back to the crib and win game seven,” Butler said. “We knew we were going to come here and get one. We know we’re going to win this next one too.” The winner will face the Golden State Warriors,

who defeated Dallas Mavericks in the Western Conference finals, in the NBA Finals that begin on Thursday in San Francisco. Butler, who had only scored 27 points over the previous three games, added: “My team... my coaches got so much belief in me. They give me that confidence to just go out there and play basketball the right way and just hoop.” He made 16 of his 29 field-goal attempts - including four of eight three-pointers - and all 11 free-throw attempts as he produced his second 40-point game of the series and fourth of the play-offs. The 32-year-old battled through a sore right knee and thanked a message from former Miami star guard Dwyane Wade for inspiring him. “He was telling me I

could do this,” Butler said. “He said ‘go out there and continue to build your legacy’ and it meant the world to me.” Heat coach Erik Spoelstra added: “Jimmy just brought his competitive will tonight. It was a will that would not let us lose.” Kyle Lowry recorded 18 points and 10 assists before fouling out for the Heat, while Max Strus added 13 points and P.J. Tucker 11. For Boston, Jayson Tatum registered 30 points and nine rebounds, while Derrick White scored 22 points and Jaylen Brown 20. Celtics coach Ime Udoka said “sloppy basketball at both ends” was the reason behind the defeat, while reserve White said they were “frustrated” but “everybody is motivated to get on that plane and go down there and get the win”.

Unnati set to rock Khelo India Youth Games

CHANDIGARH, MAY 28 (IANS): Rohtak in Haryana is known more for physical, contact sports like wrestling, hockey, basketball and volleyball -- sports in which the district has done very well over the years. However, a budding shuttler is hoping to put badminton in the list of medals for Haryana at the Khelo India Youth Games set to start here in a few days. Unnati Hooda, who recently burst onto the badminton horizon, has given the city a different star with her smashes, drop shots, crisp returns, and slick netplay. Come June 3, this Class X pass out from DBG Senior Secondary Public School, Rohtak will be one of the names to watch out for at the Khelo India Youth Games. She has set her eyes on the gold already. Though the baby of the contingent, Unnati, 15, has turned out to be a threat to many established stars too, recently getting the better of even Saina Nehwal at the India Open. Later, Nehwal had words of praise for the youngster, saying she was a champion in the making. This was after she won the Odisha Open too in January, becoming the youngest Indian to win a Super 100 event.

NEW DELHI, MAY 28 (PTI): A World Championships medal is definitely in his mind, but star javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra on Saturday said he will go into the showpiece in July without taking too much pressure, which did the trick for him during the Tokyo Olympics. The 24-year-old Chopra said thinking too much about a World Championships medal could be counterproductive though such a feat is within his reach if he gives his best on the day of competition. “During Olympics last year, I did not take any pressure, was not thinking that I shall have to win a gold. With that, I did well and won gold. My approach has been to do my best on the day according to the situation. I am satisfied if I do my best and learn and improve for the future,” Chopra told PTI in an interview from his training base in Finland. “I will do the same during the World Championships and

Neeraj Chopra

see whatever is the result, whether I win a medal. It’s not like I won gold in Olympics last year, so I have to win a medal in World Championships this year. I will see what improvement I can make in future,” said Chopra. He recently launched a contest on YouTube Shorts to promote javelin throw among youngsters. “A little bit of pressure is there, it is natural, but I always try to be relaxed, not to think about result too much, and stay as normal as possible while going into a big event.” Age is on his side.

Chopra, however, would look to make amends for his 2017 London World Championships disappointing show, where he failed to qualify for the final round. He did not take part in the 2019 World Championships in Doha as he was recuperating from an elbow surgery. “I was not in the best of my fitness in London World Championships and I have played many competitions by then that season. I could not do well,” said Chopra who created history by winning the javelin gold in Tokyo with a throw of 87.58m.

Lee says Kohli can take a break from cricket MUMBAI, MAY 28 (PTI): Virat Kohli can consider taking a break, freshen up his mind and work on a few things, feels former Australian speedster Brett Lee, a year after struggling to look beyond the Indian when it came to the best batter in recent years. Kohli’s mediocre campaign in the IPL-15 ended after Royal Challengers Bangalore’s seven-wicket defeat by Rajasthan Royals in the second qualifier in Ahmedabad on Friday. “Do I say it is a concern, I do. I would like him (Kohli) to be scoring more runs of course,” Lee

told PTI on Saturday when asked about Kohli’s prolonged lean patch. Kohli, who hasn’t scored an international hundred for nearly three years, is battling his career’s worst slump, having managed 341 runs in 16 IPL games at a below-par average of 22.73. In the ongoing IPL, he opened the RCB innings in most games. In the second qualifier, Kohli chased a fast, rising delivery from pacer Prasidh Krishna, which was wide outside the off-stump, to give a simple catch to Rajasthan Royals skipper Sanju Samson behind the stumps.

Brett Lee

“The hardest thing is when Virat Kohli doesn’t score runs, generally the team doesn’t do well. When we see Kohli had that purple

patch, when he got 800-900 runs in that season (IPL 2016) his team (Royal Challengers Bangalore) fared pretty well. We want more from Kohli. “A strong Kohli is a strong team. Unfortunately he missed out in the semis; he could not get his team to cross the line of his own bat, getting less than 10 runs. “Maybe (it is) a chance for Kohli to go back and try work on a few things and maybe just have a rest from cricket. Just get away and just freshen up the mind,” added Lee, who is the brand ambassador of ‘Sportsbet.io’.

Chelsea sale to be completed on Monday

L O N D O N , M AY 2 8 (AGENCIES): The Chelsea sale is expected to be completed on Monday after a “final and definitive agreement” was reached with the consortium led by Todd Boehly. The Premier League and UK government have approved the £4.25bn takeover. Chelsea were put up for sale in March before owner Roman Abramovich was sanctioned over his links to Russian president Vladimir Putin. The club have been operating under a special government licence which expires on 31 May. “Chelsea Football Club can confirm that a final and definitive agreement was entered into last night to sell the club to the Todd Boehly/Clearlake Capital consortium,” Chelsea said in a statement on Saturday. AHMEDABAD, MAY 28 (IANS): After almost two months of action, the 2022 edition of the Indian Premier League is at its deciding point, where newbies Gujarat Titans and inaugural champions Rajasthan Royals will square off against each other to lift the glittering silverware at the Narendra Modi Stadium here on Sunday. For Gujarat, winning the trophy at their home ground will be the perfect ending to their season of firsts, where they exceeded every pre-tournament expectation, becoming the table-toppers and then earning a direct ticket to the title clash. For Rajasthan, making an appearance in the final after winning their only title in 2008, it will be a golden opportunity to pay a superb tribute to their leader of

the inaugural trophy run and leg-spin legend, Shane Warne. The Hardik Pandyaled side were written off by many even before the tournament had begun while their mega auction strategy wasn’t deemed great. Many wondered if Pandya, fighting his own battles with form and injury and out of action since the 2021 Men’s T20 World Cup, can inspire the new entrants while taking care of his own game. Moreover, England opener Jason Roy pulled out of the tournament citing bio-bubble environment. Despite all odds, Gujarat stunned everyone with their consistency, becoming the first team to enter the playoffs and eventually, be in the final. Gujarat’s reasons for success have been all performing as a collective and chipping in with role clarity.

“The balance we have in the team, which has helped to take us in this position because it was very clear to each and every player what is my position, where I will bat and even knew that this is the situation I will face in the game and be fully prepared for that. There was no confusion in the players’ minds that what will be the responsibility in my team and what role I will play. “It was very clear from game one, which was really important for the bowling unit too, that ‘yes, this is my responsibility, this is where I will bowl’. So, that’s really more important than you having the best teams. The balance of the team has been top-class, that’s how we got here,” said leg-spinner Rashid Khan on how Gujarat have been successful in the tournament. Apart from Pandya

Alcaraz youngest man to reach last 16 since 2006

Spanish teenage sensation Carlos Alcaraz became the youngest man to make the fourth round at the French Open on Friday since Novak Djokovic in 2006. Alcaraz, 19, beat Sebastian Korda 6-4, 6-4, 6-2 as he avenged last month’s loss to the American at Monte Carlo -- his only defeat on clay this year in 21 matches. His comfortable victory was in stark contrast to his troubles in the third round when he had to save a match point and go five sets to defeat compatriot Albert Ramos-Vinolas. Playing in the tougher half of the draw, Alcaraz could face third seed Alexander Zverev in the quarterfinals. Defending champion and world number one Djokovic and 13-time winner Rafael Nadal are potential semi-final opponents. However, the teenager defeated all three on his way to the Madrid Masters title earlier this month.

J A K A RTA , M AY 2 8 (PTI): The Indian men’s hockey team scored two fantastic field goals to beat Japan 2-1 in its first Super 4 league match and avenge its loss in the pool stage of the Asia Cup here on Saturday. was saved by the Japanese defence. As was the case in the first quarter, the Japanese started the second 15 minutes on a promising note and secured a penalty corner in the 18th minute from which Takuma Niwas scored from a rebound after Ken Nagayoshi’s initial flick was saved by Indian goalkeeper Karkera. Pepped up by the goal, Japan continued to put pressure on the Indian defence and earned two more penalty corners, which the Indian defence kept at bay. Minutes later, Karthi Selvam missed a golden chance as he failed to get past Japanese goalie Yoshikawa from one-one-one situation.

Rajbhar restored India’s lead five minutes into the second half, slotting home from close range after being set up by Uttam Singh’s brilliant stick work. Five minutes later, India conceded another penalty corner but the Japanese failed to capitalise on the chance.
