SCPD demands renovation of bus terminals
DIMAPUR: State Commission for Persons with Disabilities has directed the department of Transport to renovate the present ISBT at Kohima as well as all other bus terminals in the State by providing basic facilities for persons with disabilities. SCPD commissioner Diethono Nakhro also set a three-month time for the department to comply with its directive and thereafter submit an Action Taken Report on or before August 25, 2023. She ruled that department must initiate immediate action to remedy the present scenario faced by persons with disabilities, for which the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, 2016 was enacted. Citing the Harmonised Guidelines and Standards for Universal Accessibility in India, 2021, she directed construction of permanent ramps and railings, along with providing lifts where necessary, setting up help-desks manned by qualified personnel during all workings days and hours, setting up accessible ticket counters taking into account the height, reach
and sight-line requirements to accommodate physical differences between all users, ensuring separate accessible toilet facilities with sufficient space to accommodate assistive devices, non-slip flooring with basic amenities and fixtures such as grab bars, hand rails, safety frames, etc. She ordered that the toilets should also be well maintained with sufficient manpower for housekeeping.
The order also asked the department to ensure that the overall premises, including the boarding areas, were paved and made accessible and friendly for persons with disabilities, provide tactile guiding paths from the parking bays to the terminal building and various sections inside the terminal building, ensure that there was sufficient easy-to-readand-understand signages and reserved parking space/areas for persons with disabilities, provide free travel facilities to all bona fide persons with disabilities in all NST buses and publicise how and where to avail the pass. The commissioner
further called for constructing proper resting areas and lounges within the terminals and sitting areas surrounding the premises, coming up with a solution whether to re-modify the existing “modified buses” or purchase new accessible buses that were already equipped with ramps/ hydraulic lifts/spaces for placement of wheelchairs, etc. She ordered ensuring that all new bus terminals under construction were also in compliance with basic accessibility standards as per the Harmonised Guidelines.
“Once the Harmonised Guidelines and the above mentioned directions are strictly adhered to and made visible, it would naturally bring about a change in the mindset and approach of the people towards persons with disabilities and at the same time give a sense of independence and dignity to persons with disabilities who will be utilising these facilities. This itself will help to further empower persons with disabilities and foster inclusion and equality in our society,” the order stated.

Infightingindistunits:Assam BJPPresidentwarnsofaction
GUWAHATI, MAY 28
(IANS): Assam BJP has been witnessing infighting in several district units over the last few days. At least in four district committees, a section of leaders has revolted against the local leaders.
In Goalpara, seven block-level leaders of the BJP complained to the party president in Assam, Bhabesh Kalita, for the removal of district president Brighu Ranjan Rabha.
A similar situation has also surfaced in Bongaigaon, Nalbari, and Jorhat districts.
This has caused a degree of displeasure among the top party leaders in the state. As the Lok Sabha elections are to be held within a year, the BJP is eyeing to win at least 12 out of 14 seats in Assam.
BJP leaders are very much aware of the fact that the party must do well in Assam to have a commendable position in the northeast after the Lok Sabha polls. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has set a target of winning 12 seats. The party has even started gearing up for the polls, and a few preparatory meetings were held in Guwahati.
At this juncture, the news of infighting is a cause of concern for the party.
“In the BJP, we all have to abide by the disciplines of the party. The district leaders should learn how the party leadership maintains good equations. We cannot accept indiscipline within the party. If needed, strong actions will be taken against a section of leaders,” Kalita said. A few days ago, a closed-door party meeting was held in the BJP’s Jorhat district office, and some of the local leaders made the discussion public.
This has irked the top party leaders in the state.
Kalita stated, “The matters that were discussed in a closed-door meeting can not be made public. This is our party’s system. We have sent show-cause notices to the persons involved in this incident.”
However, apart from these four districts, friction is happening in other district units of the party as well.
February 14 cleared 2,099 hectare in Burachapori Wildlife Sanctuary and nearby revenue villages in Sonitpur district, affecting almost 12,800 people.
On February 15, in Digboi of Tinsukia district in upper Assam, security personnel resorted to lathi charge when alleged en -
croachers of railway land pelted stones to prevent an eviction drive there.
On the same day, the Barpeta district administration carried out an eviction drive in Bhabanipur area to clear nearly 300 hectare belonging to Gopal Dev Aata Satra (Vaishnavite monastery). In Pava Reserve Forest under Lakhimpur district, the administration started an eviction drive to clear 450 hectare of encroached land on January 10, which continued for several days, displacing around 500 families of “illegal settlers”.
The drive in Nagoan’s Batadrava on December 19 was billed as one of the largest in the region as it uprooted more than 5,000 alleged encroachers. It was followed by another exercise on December 26 to clear 400 bighas in Barpeta.
Setting aside opposition criticism, the chief minister had on December 21 last year told the state Assembly that eviction drives to clear government and forest lands in Assam would continue as long as the BJP is in power.

In the memorandum, they explained what the people of the constituency wanted to appraise the Union home minister AmiT Shah when he visit the state to take stock of the current chain of violence.
However, on seeing the people approaching, the security guard of the MLA closed the gate after which some youths among them knocked at the gate insisting them to open it and allow them to submit the memorandum.
When the people in the lead tried to forcibly open the gate, the son of the MLA opened fire some rounds toward them, injuring two of them, she narrated.
“We strongly condemn the act of the MLA. Raghumani is unworthy of being a representative of the people. He must resign as an MLA on moral ground,” she demanded.

Museum documenting traditional sports of Assam
GUWAHATI, MAY 28
(PTI): ‘Nao-khel’, ‘Alang Dalang’, ‘Koni juj’, ‘Moh juj’, and ‘Khomlainai’ are words that may seem unfamiliar to many but these are among 600 games traditionally played in Assam since yore which an ardent sports enthusiast has attempted to document by setting up a museum here.
Assam’s rich heritage of traditional sports since the days of the Ahom rulers may have waned over the centuries due to varied reasons but Chiranjib Sarma has taken the onus to revive these games and sporting activities.
‘‘The first step in this direction is the setting up of the Olympia Traditional Sports Museum here which showcases the various traditional sporting activities practised by the indigenous people of the state’’, Sarma told PTI.
People are now generally apathetic to the once popular traditional sports of the state, primarily due

Assam BJP slams Borah’s ‘trouble engine’ govt remark
GUWAHATI, MAY 28 (IANS): Following Assam Congress chief Bhupen Borah’s cryptic dig at the state government, terming it a “trouble engine,” the BJP sharply reacted to it.
The state BJP leaders said that unlike the previous Congress governments in Assam, the current dispensation led by Himanta Biswa Sarma does not have to rely on the Centre’s fund for paying even the salaries of state government employees.
Debajit Mahanta, an Assam BJP leader, said, “Since India’s Independence, Assam was ruled by the Congress for a number of years, but only after the BJP came to power here, the state government is no longer depen-
dent on funds from the Centre to pay the salaries of its 4.5 lakh employees.”
“Perhaps Borah made the comments because he was unaware of the most recent events in the state,” he said. He alleged that the recruited youths had to pay money as soon as they received the appointment letters when Congress was ruling Assam, but now that the BJP is in power, the youths received jobs on the basis of merit. The state government has recently distributed appointment letters to nearly 45,000 youths who have been selected to serve in various departments.
Borah earlier said that people had to give bribes to get jobs; however,
me in the project and we decided not to keep the information confined to books but set up a museum where the details of the games, particularly those played by the tribal communities, will be on display in various forms’’, Sarma said.
Information relating to over 600 sports and games traditionally played in the state by men, women and children was collected by him. The Museum, a first of its kind in the North East by an individual, showcases through illustrations, photographs and books the way the various games are played along with the equipment used in the games.
Assam’s indigenous wrestling, boat race, buffalo, cock and bird fights, bamboo stilt walking, butterfly catching, ‘tekeli bhonga khel’, bow and arrows along are some of the games that are still practised mostly in rural areas during certain festivals, including the state’s spring festival ‘Rongali Bihu’’, he pointed
out.
The Museum is the first step towards preserving Assam’s sports history but Sarma and his team is also planning to revive these sporting activities and motivate children and youth to play these games.
‘‘We have already initiated the process of setting up small centres in different parts of the state to promote our traditional sports. The students will stay there, receive education in nearby schools as well as training in selected sports’’, he added. A senior official of the Museum, Uday Borgohain, said that earlier, sports was an extra-curricular activity and not a compulsory subject in the school syllabus.
‘‘There have been changes in the attitude of educational institutions as well as parents who want their children to pursue sports as a career. We want them to give equal attention to both traditional and modern sporting events’’, he said.
Assam principal held for allegedly sexually assaulting minor
GUWAHATI, MAY 28
(IANS): A school teacher in Assam’s Karimganj district has been arrested after a complaint was lodged against him on the charges of sexually assaulting a minor girl in the school premises, police said on Sunday.
On May 18, an FIR was filed at the Badarpur Police Station in the district against Bhanga Higher Secondary school’s head teacher Asar Uddin, alleging that he had called a student into his room and had sexually abused her.
caught him from that house based on the exact information. He has been brought before the court by us. Those who assisted him in hiding are suspected, and we are looking into the situation more deeply,” Das added. Asar Uddin was last week removed from his position by the Secondary Education Department of Assam and advised to assist the police with their investigation.
nobody is telling the truth now out of the BJP’s fear. “I request the Assam Congress president to show a single candidate who got the jobs by giving bribes,” Mahanta said.
He also warned Borah not to make any irrational claims in the future. The BJP leader claimed that several Congress employees had also gotten appointment letters in the most recent round of recruitment examinations, in addition to the newly hired employees. Speaking further in response to Borah’s remarks about borrowing loans to create a fictitious GDP, Mahanta claimed that the debt in states with Congress-led governments is significantly lower.
Police issued an arrest warrant after filing a complaint against him under the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act (POCSO). Asar Uddin, however, fled the scene following the event. A number of social organisations organised demonstrations against the incident and called for Asar Uddin’s immediate arrest. He was located in the Nilambazar area on Saturday night by Karimganj police, who then brought him before the court.
Asar Uddin was hiding in a house there, according to Karimganj’s Superintendent of Police Partha Pratim Das, adding that police got the information about his hide-out on Saturday.
“Our team carefully planned an operation and
Assam’s Director, Secondary Education, Mamata Hojai wrote in her letter: “Report regarding involvement in sexual exploitation of a minor girl student of class 7 of Bhanga HS School by Principal Asar Uddin has been published in the media, which has maligned the image of our department. There is a demand from the public and the guardians of students for immediate departmental action against Asar Uddin.” According to the district level education department officers, sufficient evidence is available against the accused and this was informed to the higher authority. “Considering this, departmental proceeding was called for against Asar Uddin. He has been placed under suspension with immediate effect under Rule 6(1) of the Assam Services (Discipline & Appeal) Rules, 1964,” Hojai rote in the letter.

PM treated Parliament inauguration like his coronation: Opposition
NEW DELHI, MAY 28
(PTI): The inauguration of the new Parliament building on Sunday was marked with a boycott by 21 opposition parties which accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi of treating the event like his “coronation”, and said democracy is run by people not by buildings.
The opposition leaders also accused the government of violating Constitutional norms by not inviting President Droupadi Murmu to the event. They said when the inauguration ceremony was underway, protesting wrestlers, who have accused a BJP MP of sexual harassment, were removed from Jantar Mantar as they sought to march towards the new Parliament House.
The government has rejected the opposition argument, saying no protocol were violated and that Modi respects the President.
The Congress claimed the new Parliament was inaugurated in a grand fashion by a “self-glorifying authoritarian PM with utter disdain for Parliamentary procedures”.
Democracy does not run from the buildings but through the voices of the people, Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge said.
“The right to
inaugurate the new Parliament was snatched from the President. Women players were beaten up on the streets with dictatorial force,” he said in a tweet in Hindi. “The three lies of the BJP-RSS rulers now stand exposed before the country -- democracy, nationalism and Beti Bachao.”
“Remember Modi ji, democracy does not run from the buildings but functions through the voice of the public,” Kharge said.
The Rashtriya Janata Dal was most stinging in its criticism of the project as it likened the new Parliament building’s triangular shape to a coffin, drawing a sharp
CM Vijayan slams center for cutting Kerala’s borrowing limit
KANNUR, MAY 28 (PTI): Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on Sunday lashed out at the BJP-ruled central government over its decision to cut down the borrowing limit of the state by half by terming the move as “sadistic”.
Vijayan said while the central government jumps at every opportunity to fill its coffers, like implementing GST, it was taking a “negative approach” when it came to helping the state progress.
He contended that the Centre demanded payment for the help provided, like foodgrains and aid of armed forces, by it during various calamities face by the state.
“This is not just a problem of the LDF government. It is a problem for the whole state. It is a matter of the progress of the people. Should the union government take the position of letting a state perish is an issue to be considered,” the CM said.
Vijayan said the stand taken by Centre was another crisis being heaped upon a

response from the BJP.
“What is this,” the party asked in the tweet, while sharing a picture of the coffin and that of the new Parliament.
The BJP’s Bihar unit responded to the tweet saying, “The first picture is your future and the second is of India. Understood?”
Congress leader Rahul Gandhi said Parliament is the voice of the people but the prime minister is treating the inauguration of the new building like a “coronation”.
“Parliament is the voice of the people! The prime minister is treating the inauguration of the
Parliament House as (a) coronation,” Gandhi said in a tweet in Hindi soon after Modi inaugurated the building.
Jairam Ramesh, Congress general secretary (incharge communication), said President Droupadi Murmu -- the first woman from the tribal community to become the head of State -- is not allowed to perform her Constitutional duties and inaugurate the new building.
“A self-glorifying authoritarian Prime Minister with utter disdain for Parliamentary procedures, who rarely attends Parliament or engages in it, inaugurates the new Parliament building in 2023,” he said.
Congress spokesperson Supriya Srinate told a press conference that not inviting the president to the new Parliament building’s inauguration reflects the government’s “anti-woman and anti-Dalit” attitude. This was Modi’s “rajtilak (coronation)”, she said.
Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) president Sharad Pawar said various rituals performed at the inauguration of the new Parliament building show the country was being taken backwards by decades.
(PTI): President Droupadi Murmu on Sunday welcomed the inauguration of the new parliament building by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and said it is a matter of pride and immense happiness for the entire country. In her message at the inauguration, the president said the inauguration of the new Parliament building
will be written in golden words in the country’s history.
“Inauguration of the new parliament building is a matter of pride and joy for all the people of India,” she said in her message. Her message was read out by Rajya Sabha deputy chairman Harivansh.
Noting the parliament is a guiding light for the country, President Murmu
said the new Parliament building “is an important milestone in our democratic journey”.
“The occasion of the inauguration of the new parliament building will be written in golden words in the history of India,” Murmu said.

Big Oppn meet over 2024 election strategy in Patna on June 12
NEW DELHI, MAY 28 (AGENCIES):
Opposition parties will meet in Patna on June 12 to discuss a joint strategy for the 2024 general elections, sources have said.
More than 18 like-minded Opposition parties will attend the conclave. A senior leader of an opposition party, however, told NDTV that this is a “preparatory meeting”.
“The main meeting of the Opposition Parties will be held later,” he added.
The decision on the date of meeting came as 20 opposition parties unitedly boycotted the opening of the new parliament today by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
The parties have accused the government of ignoring President Droupadi
Murmu, saying as the First citizen of the country, she should have rightfully led the inauguration ceremony.
“She (the President) alone represents government, opposition, and every citizen alike. She is the First Citizen of India. Inauguration of the new Parliament building by her will symbolise Government’s commitment to Democratic values and Constitutional propriety,” Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge had tweeted.
The date was decided days after Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar -- who volunteered to act as the interlocutor for opposition unity ahead of the 2024 general elections - met Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge and Rahul Gandhi in Delhi.
state which has faced and survived several calamities.
At the same time he also indirectly criticised the Congress-led UDF opposition in the state for allegedly remaining silent over the Centre’s decisions which were not beneficial for the state.
“But despite all this, some people are not ready to respond to this,” the CM said while speaking at an event held at the Pinarayi Convention Center here.
However, the CM made it clear that as long as the Left government was in power in the state, there would be no denial of benefits to the workers and the poor.
On Saturday, the ruling-CPI(M) had termed the Centre’s move to cut the borrowing capacity of Kerala as an “attempt to suffocate the state” by any means necessary.
The Left party had said that the central government had earlier given permission to borrow Rs 32,442 crore but the limit has now been reduced to Rs 15,390 crore.
BJP slams RJD for ‘coffin’ dig at new Parl
NEW DELHI/PATNA,
MAY 28 (PTI): The
Rashtriya Janata Dal
Sunday likened the new Parliament building’s triangular shape to a coffin, drawing a sharp response from the BJP which said people will bury the RJD in the coffin in the 2024 Lok Sabha polls. As the new building was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the ruling party in Bihar put out a tweet that showed a coffin and the new legislature building side by side. “What is this,” the party asked in the tweet.
The BJP’s Bihar unit responded to the tweet saying, “The first picture is your future and the second is of India. Understood?”
BJP spokespersons
Shehzad Poonawalla termed RJD’s tweet “disgusting”, while Gaurav Bhatia said the coffin belongs to the RJD and Parliament to the country.
“This is the level to which they have fallen. Disgusting. This will prove to be the final nail in the coffin of RJD’s politics. Trikon or Tribhuj (triangles)
has much significance in Indian system. By the way, the coffin is hexagonal or has six sided polygon,” Poonawalla said on Twitter.
Bhatia said, “Today is a historic moment and the country is proud. You are merely a ‘Nazarbattu’ (a symbol to ward off evil eye) and nothing else. Keep beating your chest.”
“In 2024, the people of the country will bury you in this coffin and will not even give you a chance to enter the temple of new democracy. Let it also be decided that the coffin is yours and Parliament of the country,” he said, using the hashtag “MyParliamentMyPride”.
BJP MP from
Aurangabad, Sushil Kumar
Singh, who attended the inauguration of the new Parliament building, said, the tweet put out by the RJD was “in poor taste”.
“What do you expect from this party (RJD) which is now a partner of the JD(U) in the Bihar government. Those who are making this odious comparison with a coffin, their politics will be sealed in a coffin,” he told reporters in Delhi.
Singh, a four-time MP, said the new Parliament building represents the spirit of Atmanirbhar Bharat as it demonstrates India now has the capabilities to dream, design, build and execute such projects all by itself.
G7 sanctions hit India, FDI flows sink, dividends blocked
Caught in a bind
It has been around four years since the government of Nagaland extended the Inner Line Permit to entire Dimapur (including newly carved districts of Chümoukedima and Niuland) on December 10,2019 but which has remained unimplemented for various reasons. It may be noted that when Nagaland was created as a tribal state on December 1,1963 with continuation of the ILP,somehow then Dimapur sub division was excluded from the purview since it was not defined as a ‘tribal area’. Some NGOs have rightly maintained that when the entire Nagaland itself is a tribal state and tribal area, there is no need for another Tribal belt or Compact area to be curved out of the existing tribal area. For unknown reasons, when a notification declared Dimapur as a tribal area on November 21,1979 ILP was not included for the next 40 years. Though ILP was not implemented in Dimapur due to various reasons, the state government in 2019 extended the ILP to Dimapur following pressure from various civil society groups in view of the rising cases of illegal immigrants in Nagaland.
After extending ILP all over Dimapur district including two new districts carved out of it, the government of Nagaland somehow faltered over the issue of making up its mind about the cut-off year for the purpose of implementing the ILP. In order to do that the government had initiated the process for Registration of Indigenous Inhabitant of Nagaland (RIIN) in first week of July. After some objections, a three-member Commission on RIIN headed by retired chief secretary Banuo Z.Jamir was constituted on July 29,2019 to frame modalities and given three months to submit its report. The Commission submitted its report to the government sometime in November 2019 but till date no discussions have been held in the assembly. The RIIN commission had recommended December 1,1963 as the cut off date to determine inhabitants of Nagaland state. However, the state government for reasons best known to it has applied a different yardstick for Dimapur by proposing to have November 21,1979 as the cut-off year to determine inhabitants of the state. It is inconceivable that there can be two different cut-off dates in a tiny State like Nagaland, ie; December 1, 1963 for the other district and November 21, 1979 for the Districts of Dimapur, Chümoukedima, and Niuland. In this connection the Civil Societies have submitted representations after representation to the government since 2014 highlighting the merits of enforcement of 1-12-1963 as cut-off date and year throughout Nagaland on the basis of the standing government Notification NO. AR-8/8/76 dated Kohima the 28th April, 1977, but remains a deaf ear. At a recent meeting with chief minister Neiphiu Rio, the non-Naga inhabitants in Dimapur had expressed reservations about ILP and December 1,1963 as cut-off year since many would have issues of proving their claims of having settled on or before December 1,1963 due to non-availability of proper documents. In response the chief minister said relevant documents for the non-Naga inhabitants would be issued based on the verified data. Rio also made it clear that indigenous inhabitant status would not be accorded, but permanent resident status for those who had settled in Nagaland prior to 1963. For those who have settled in Nagaland after 1963, they would be given temporary resident status. The two categories would have to be considered for enactment in the assembly as the government will now have to repent at leisure for having remained ignorant all these decades.

Unquestioned Revelation
In that day you will ask Me nothing. —John 16:23
When is “that day”? It is when the ascended Lord makes you one with the Father. “In that day” you will be one with the Father just as Jesus is, and He said, “In that day you will ask Me nothing.”
Until the resurrection life of Jesus is fully exhibited in you, you have questions about many things. Then after a while you find that all your questions are gone— you don’t seem to have any left to ask. You have come to the point of total reliance on the resurrection life of Jesus, which brings you into complete oneness with the purpose of God. Are you living that life now? If not, why aren’t you?
“In that day” there may be any number of things still hidden to your understanding, but they will not come between your heart and God. “In that day you will ask Me nothing”— you will not need to ask, because you will be certain that God will reveal things in accordance with His will.
The faith and peace of John 14:1 has become the real attitude of your heart, and there are no more questions to be asked. If anything is a mystery to you and is coming between you and God, never look for the explanation in your mind, but look for it in your spirit, your true inner nature— that is where the problem is. Once your inner spiritual nature is willing to submit to the life of Jesus, your understanding will be perfectly clear, and you will come to the place where there is no distance between the Father and you, His child, because the Lord has made you one. “In that day you will ask Me nothing.”

India is growing. Figures may vary but by sheer number of people, efforts, enterprises and production, it has to grow.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi tells the meet at Australia that global expectations from the country are rising. Certainly, but the country faces problems too as the recent G7 meet at Hiroshima tightens sanctions against Russia that prevents even imports and wide range of exports. It blacklists 69 Russian companies and one each from Armenia and Kyrgyzystan. It is hitting India too. It has come with the first decline in a decade of 16 percent foreign direct investment (FDI) inflows to $ 71 billion. The RBI notes that after adjusting for repatriation and disinvestment direct inflows are at $ 41.6 billion, 27 percent lower. Yes, there is global slowdown but sanctions too may be preventing deals.
The world economy is in a tizzy since 200708 subprime crisis, when a number of global giant banks, insurance companies and financial institutions collapsed. It did not bring down FDI. Never before it hit India so hard.
Sure the Prime Minister
knows how to “challenge the challenges”, including this one. The sanctions may be dampener. The G7 was not soft towards India at the latest meet.
The country needs to introspect. The recent unsavoury happenings in Manipur may appear to be a non-event at a remote corner. The international system observes it keenly.
It understands that it is not all hunky dory. At its investment meet three months back, UP got a mere Rs 33000 crore promises and no FDI. Many jerky decisions were taken during the past few years. At a time when the economy was turning for the better, it got the shock of demonetisation, considered an expression of distrust in one’s currency. Next was a not so well-tailored GST, which gave goose bumps to the economy. Higher its collections are, deeper it led to problems with unmanageable inflation. It has subsided a bit but the compounded effect of high retail and wholesale indices have pitched the price bases at high level. It has made manufacturing and processing expensive contributing to fall in exports. India has been making
strides in turning the rupee into an international currency. Again the confidence of those who deal with India gets a jolt as Rs 2000 currency notes are demonetised. It has a cost. The process itself costs a minimum of Rs 1 lakh crore. Collection, accounting, disposition too have costs. Scrapping 10.8 percent currency, at a time when India wants to increase trading in rupee, is not desirable. Caution in dealing with the currency perks up its brand value. Russia despite a rupee trade agreement has refused to accept rupee payment. The US dollar reigns supreme despite the shaky conditions. The US Federal Bank scraps series of notes periodically. It, however, never withdraws and allows the notes to continue till these are in circulation. A wise move. A fledgling poor economy needs more caution. Particularly as it strives to be a global leader and a comparable economy. The cautions are appropriate as the global economy is through a severe problem for low demand, production and related reasons.

An interesting aspect is that even Indian companies too went slow investing in foreign shores. It fell to $ 13.6 billion, 23.6 percent fall. It could be either due to poor financial conditions or also because of the fear of sanctions for India’s with Russia.
The Ukraine war is drain-
Japan in tune with G7 freezes the assets of 78 groups and 17 individuals and bans exports to 80 Russian entities. Though India is not the target, many of it could hit India. India has invested $ 16 billion in Russian oil and gas projects. The OVL holds a 26 percent stake in CSJC Vankorneft’. An Indian consortium comprising Indian Oil, OIL and Bharat Petro Resources also holds a 23.9 percent stake in the same venture,
It may be having impact on the FDI as well. The latest sanctions targets individuals and 20 countries. Whether inflows subsided for that reason is not clear but through 2022 declining trend was visible.
It was ascribed to the weak economic conditions and drying up of funds because of high prices. Even during the covid19 FDI flow to many tech companies including the Reliance groups surge was noticed. Crisil economist DK Joshi says that India is in a comfortable position and can attract investment.

Naga Club terms NSF FIR as ‘vexatious’
To, The Officer-In-Charge, North PS, Kohima, Nagaland.
Sub: Vexatious FIR dated 27.05.2023 filed by the NSF.
Sir, May we, the undersigned, have the utmost privilege to state the following for your kind appreciation and necessary action:
1.That it has been reliably learnt that one FIR dated 2705-2023 was filed by the Naga Students Federation alleging that their office premise and building has been damaged on the early hours of 27-05-2023 by unknown miscreants.
2.That the land on which the NSF Office is established along some other adjacent buildings where other shops/ offices/printing press were established were given to the Naga Club by Kohima Village. It is pertinent to state that Naga Club was established in the year 1918. Thereafter, vide Ref. No. NSF/Corres/2/83-85 dated 04-04-1983 (ENCLOSURE-A) written by their then President the NSF requested for the utilization of the Naga Club building as their office. Accordingly, vide Order dated 07-04-1983 (ENCLOSUREB) it was agreed that NSF shall be tenant of the Naga Club Building for a monthly rent of Rs.500/-. However, excepting for the first month (i.e. April 1983) no proper rent has been paid by NSF to the Naga Club thus far. It may be noted that during the life time of Shri. Vilavor Liegise the General Secretary, Naga Club whenever demand for rent was made a mere Rs.50/- & Rs.100/- were paid citing that they don’t have money. Despite that the Naga Club continued to keep the NSF as tenants for about 40 years thus far.
3. That all those decades ago, the Naga Club building was built with the purpose to unite the Nagas without borders by providing free accommodation and facilities to the Nagas coming from the remotest regions of the Naga inhabited areas so as to get to know each other better and to cooperate as brothers and sisters. Your benign authority is well aware that things back then were not as they are these days including the political scenario, economic status and general development. However, the noble objective of our forefathers is completely distorted by the NSF by converting the Naga Club building and plot into a commercial establishment and by
collecting rents from various tenants behind the back of the Naga Club. As such Kohima Village Council, the traditional land owners who donated the plot came heavily on them that no one shall distort the Naga Club history vide Letter dated 11-02-2023 (ENCLOSUREC). The historic legacy passed down to us by our forefathers like Shri. Rhreichalie Pienyu and others of the then DC’s Office must not be distorted.
4.That when a person of exemplary standing such as Shri. Krurovi Peseyie was elected as President Naga Club in 2017/18 the NSF refused to have meeting with his team citing that their meeting with the Naga Club would legitimize and recognize the Naga Club. Perhaps things could have been different if the NSF had sat down with the Naga Club then.
5.That in 2018 when Naga Club was to observe its Centenary, Shri. Kewezu Mero, the Joint Secretary and Caretaker of the Naga Club sent Greetings Message to Shri. Krurovi Peseyie’s team. However, some people threatened Shri. Kewezu Mero to withdraw his Greetings Message which he accordingly did. It was only after some tall Chakhesang public leaders approached Shri. Kewezu Mero that he again withdrew his withdrawal Letter.
Further, in 2018 on the year of Centenary in order to commemorate the same a monolith was decided to be erected on the Naga Club Building site. However, on several occasions NSF obstructed the erection of the monolith at the Naga Club Building site by mobilizing innocent school and college students against the Naga Club who were unaware of the actual story, but were blindly following their leaders. Tense situation developed on some occasions. By the grace of God, it was then that some members of the Lotha tribe came forward offering the Naga Club monolith to be erected at Wokha;also some members from the Sumi community came forward offering the monolith to be erected at their area; also came Jotsoma villagers offering the monolith to be erected at their village. The Naga Club after considering that a native of Jotsoma village Zasibeito Nagi was the first martyr to die for the Naga political cause decided that the monolith shall be erected at Jotsoma. Accordingly, the monolith was erected at Jotsoma on 29-11-2018
near Zasibeito Nagi’s tomb (ENCLOSURE-D).
6. That on 24-11-2020 and 20-10-2021 (ENCLOSURE-El & E2) the Naga Club wrote to the NSF to have a meeting regarding the Naga Club Building. However, the NSF never turned up neither did they pay the rent. Hence, after patiently waiting for 6-7 years requesting the NSF to have a meeting vide Ref. No. NC. NSF/VNNCB-01/2022 dated 12-07-2022 (ENCLOSURE_F) the Naga Club served eviction notice to the NSF. Then again without vacating the premise, the NSF instead issued clarification in the local dailies which was published on 25-07-2022 (ENCLOSURE-G) laden with incorrect facts and misleading narration. It is stated that before the occupation by the Forest Department, the Naga Club Building was also utilized by the NNC. Thereafter, the Forest Department came and occupied the building as tenant. It is pertinent to state that the Forest Department paid all their rent to the NagaClub. After Forest Department vacated the Naga Club Building the NSF were granted tenancy by considering the aforesaid Application dated 04-04-1983 at a monthly rent of Rs.500/-.
7.That again vide Ref. No.NC-NSF/GSNCB/1-2023 dated 06-03-2023 (ENCLOSURE-H) the Naga Club served vacation notice to the NSF. However, it was not adhered to. As such vide Ref No.NC/DC-1-23 dated 19-05-2023 (ENCLOSUREI) the Naga Club wrote to the Deputy Commissioner, Kohima on the subject “Clarification on Naga Club plot of land near Old Secretariat Complex, Kohima”.
8.That some of the occupants of the Naga Club Building such as Japfu Printing Press, Mero Tea Stall, Kewezu Mero quarter of 4-5 rooms on being asked to vacate the building, did the same. As such those empty houses and rooms were demolished about three weeks ago. However, since the place is in the middle of the town and heavy machinery/ vehicle is required to dispose the debris it was decided that inorder to avoid public inconvenience the same shall be removed in the early hours of 27-05-2023. It may be noted that the vacation notice was also served to the remaining shops and establishments, besides informing them the same in person, but they did not vacate the building. Some of
India was the largest destination for the FDI in setting up of R&D bases by multinationals. The government hopes that it is temporary phase and would be corrected soon. But the way the post Hiroshima G7 meet sanctions on Russia have been tightened, it may not possibly be easy.
The Boeing had planned investing in aircraft maintenance operations in India. It is however lukewarm to the recent call of Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman.
India may look for large investments but if G7 remains tight-fisted the future flows may remain uncertain.
Unclaimed deposits
them requested for extension of time to vacate the building which the Naga Club agreed. However, despite the lapse of the extended time the building was not vacated. Pertinently, it is stated that the Naga Club did not keep any other tenant in the building except NSF.
Accordingly, some youths were entrusted to dispose the debris of the already demolished building in the early hours of 27-05-2023. Meantime, those shops and establishments who did not vacate the building despite eviction notice being served upon them, the Naga Club entrusted the youths to demolish the structure on 27-05-2023 so that the debris shall be removed on the same day without creating public inconvenience. Therefore, the question of vandalizing public property or criminal trespass by unknown miscreants as alleged by the NSF does not arise. It is expected that the NSF being a highly respected organization which has produced many tall Naga leaders over the years shall act in an honest, fair, transparent and reasonable manner. It is stated that the undersigned are not miscreants, but bonafide owner of the land and building. Rather, it is NSF that is in unlawful and forced occupation of the Naga Club Building since the eviction notice was issued.
In the premises aforesaid, it is stated that the FIR dated 27-05-2023 filed by the NSF is malicious, baseless, misconceived and misleading. Be that as it may, the present issue between the NSF and Naga Club is a civil issue competent to be tried and decided by a Hon’ble Civil Court having jurisdiction. The practice of giving a criminal cloak to cases of civil nature has time and again been deprecated by the Hon’ble Supreme Court and the Hon’ble High Courts across the country. Further, the dispute is regarding immoveable property as such filing of FIR for offences under IPC is misconceived as the said statute is ill-equipped for deciding such cases. Therefore, it is requested that your benign authority may not take cognizance in the case so in order to allow the matter to be resolved in an appropriate court of law or before an appropriate forum.
Thanking you.
Yours sincerely,
(Shri. Kuolachalie Seyie) President, Naga Club (Shri. K.Gwanilo Himb) Secretary, Naga ClubLearn how to keep a track of your old investments.
Romesh Sahara retired from service in the month of March. A very popular figure in his locality, he is known for throwing lavish parties at his place. An amateur singer himself, he often organises jalsa nights at home. His wife also loves cooking and entertaining guests and is the perfect host. On a recent visit to his place, Mrs. Saharia complained to me that her husband can’t say: ‘no’. So much so that they do not remember how many bank accounts they have. If a sales executive approaches Romesh Saharia to open a new bank account, he can’t say ‘no’. Same is the case with fixed deposits. But nothing is of significant amount. Once opened, it remains unattended forever.
Now, after retirement, the couple is struggling to keep a track of their investment/deposit records. The Saharia couple is not alone. If not to this degree, most of us struggle to keep a track of our old bank accounts or investments. So, what happens to our old investments when we don’t operate these for long? Let’s learn.
If a bank account or a fixed deposit remains unattended for ten ears, it is considered an unclaimed deposit. This means, if you didn’t deposit or withdraw from an account for a decade, it is considered unclaimed. And when an account or deposit is declared unclaimed, the deposited amount along with the accumulated interest, is transferred to RBI in an account called Depositor Education and Awareness Fund. This fund is utilised to educate depositors so that they don’t end up contributing to an unclaimed deposit. But the problem is enormous. To give you some perspective, a staggering Rs. 35,012 crore rupees has been deposited in this account only from the public sector banks until this February.
It’s also possible to claim an unattended account. For this, you have to visit our bank’s website. All the banks in India have a page on their websites for this. In the appropriate place. type your name to find out your deposits. Most of the websites will ask you to submit another detail along with the name. In most cases, it is your date of birth or PAN number or telephone or passport number. etc. Once the system verifies the details, it will give you the details of the deposits. Once you find out your deposits and want to regularise the account, you need to visit any branch of your bank. There you need to submit a letter stating the reason for not operating the account and your intent to regularise it. Along with the letter, you need to submit an ID and residence proof. In case of a non-individual account, you need to submit a letter in the letterhead of the organisation. This you need to submit along with relevant documents.
The current system is to visit every individual bank or its website to find out about your deposits. This is a tedious exercise, more so if you don’t even remember where you have made the deposits or have the account. Very soon, however RBI will be coming up with a centralised system where, on a single page, you will be able to find information about all our unclaimed deposits. But the system is not yet ready.

PM pays tribute to Savarkar, NTR in 101st ‘Mann ki Baat’
NEW
DELHI, MAY 28
(PTI): Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday hailed Hindutva ideologue V D Savarkar, saying his personality exuded strength and his fearless and selfrespecting nature could not tolerate the mindset of slavery. Paying homage to Savarkar on his birth anniversary during the 101st ‘Mann ki Baat’ broadcast, Modi said his sacrifice, courage and determination continue to inspire us.
Modi also paid homage to Kabir, whose birth anniversary falls on June 4, and said the mystic-poet opposed every evil practice that divided people and tried to awaken the society.
Paying tributes to Savarkar, the prime minister said, “Today the 28th of May is the birth anniversary of the great freedom fighter, Veer Savarkar. The stories related to his sacrifice, courage and resolve inspire us all even today. I cannot forget
Narendra Modithe day when I went to the cell in Andaman where Veer Savarkar served the sentence of ‘Kala paani’.
“Veer Savarkar’s personality exuded strength and magnanimity. His fearless and self-respecting nature could not tolerate the mindset of slavery at all. Not only in the freedom movement, whatever Veer Savarkar did for social equality and social justice is remembered even today,” he said.
Earlier in the day, Prime Minister Modi, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, several Union ministers and MPs paid floral tributes to
Savarkar in the Central Hall of the old Parliament building. In his ‘Mann ki Baat’ address, Modi also paid homage to N T Rama Rao, saying he left an indelible mark through the strength of his amazing talent in politics and the film industry.
“Today, is the 100th birth anniversary of NTR. On the strength of his versatility of talent, he not only became the superstar of Telugu cinema, but also won the hearts of crores of people.
“Do you know that he had acted in more than 300 films? He revived many historical characters on the basis of his acting. People liked NTR’s acting in the roles of Bhagwan Krishna, Ram and many others, so much that they still remember him,” he said.
NTR had carved out his own identity in the cinema world as well as in politics, Modi said. “There too, he got lots of love and

blessings from the people. I offer my humble tribute to N.T Rama Rao ji, who ruled the hearts of millions of people in the country and the world,” the prime minister said. In his tribute to Kabir, Modi said, “The path shown by Kabirdas ji is equally relevant even today.
“Kabirdas ji used to say, ‘Kabira Kuan Ek hai, Pani Bhare AnekBartan mein hi bhed hai, Paani sab mein ek’, which means: There could be myriad kinds of people who come to the well to draw water...But the well does not differentiate anyone...water remains the same in all utensils.”
“Sant Kabir opposed every evil practice that divided the society; tried to awaken the society. Today, when the country is moving forward with the determination to develop, we should increase our efforts to empower the society, taking inspiration from Sant Kabir,” he said.
(IANS): Youth unemployment in India is climbing sharply, a development that risks undermining the new darling of the world economy at the very moment it was expected to really take off, local media reported.
In contrast to China, where economists fear there won’t be enough workers to support the growing number of elderly, in India, the concern is there aren’t enough jobs to support the growing number of workers, CNN reported. While people under the age of 25 account for more than 40 per cent of India’s population, almost half of them - 45.8 per cent - were unemployed as of December 2022, according to the Centre for Monitoring Indian Economy (CMIE), an independent think tank headquartered in Mumbai, which publishes job data more regularly than the Indian government. Some analysts have described the situation to
CNN as a “time bomb”, warning of the potential for social unrest unless more employment can be created. Experts warn the problem will only get worse as the population grows and competition for jobs gets even tougher.
Kaushik Basu, an economics professor at Cornell University and former chief economic adviser for the Indian government, described India’s youth unemployment rate as “shockingly high”, CNN reported. It’s been “climbing slowly for a long time, say for about 15 years it’s been on a slow climb but over the past seven, eight years it’s been a sharp climb,” he said.
“If that category of people do not find enough employment,” Basu added, “then what was meant to be an opportunity, the bulge in that demographic dividend, could become a huge challenge and problem for India,” CNN reported.

Responding to a query, Puttarangashetty said he was assured a Minister position and hence he had been to Delhi.
“But on reaching Bengaluru, I got to know that I have not made it to the Ministry. I don’t know what the reason is, Siddaramiah can explain,” he said, adding that his supporters, who were upset staged a protest and have requested him to function just as an MLA.
Puttarangashetty’s candidature for the Deputy Speaker’s post has been approved by AICC president Mallikarjun Kharge, the party had said recently.

JAIPUR, MAY 28 (PTI):
Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot on Sunday said the Congress will “compel” the Centre to implement the old pension scheme (OPS) in the entire country, asserting that the committee on the new pension scheme (NPS) was constituted under pressure mounted by his party.
Gehlot also announced to increase old age pension from Rs 1,000 to Rs 1,500 if the Congress government retains power in Rajasthan.
“Under the chairmanship of finance secretary, the Centre has formed a committee to find out a way forward for what can be done after combining OPS and NPS. They formed the committee after we mounted pressure,” he said. The chief minister was addressing a ‘Kisan Mahasammelan’ in Maulasar of Nagaur district on the sidelines of inflation relief camp review. On April 6, the Union Finance Ministry set up a committee under Finance Secretary T V Somanathan to review
the pension system for government employees. The committee would suggest whether in the light of the existing framework and structure of the National Pension System, as applicable to government employees, any changes therein are warranted. “They (Centre) have developed a thinking (about OPS). Now, they are facing a problem that how to save their face,” Gehlot said.
He said that OPS is a revolutionary decision and it will not be reversed.
“The OPS is not going to be reversed. If our government comes again, then we will uphold it. But, we will compel the Centre to implement it in the entire country. We are progressing with this thinking,” Gehlot said.

Global trends to drive equity markets this week
NEW DELHI, MAY 28
(PTI): Stock markets would be largely driven by macroeconomic data, auto sales numbers, FII inflows and global trends this week, analysts said. The US debt ceiling negotiations and institutional flows will also be watched by investors.
“This week, market participants will closely monitor institutional flows, as there is a historical observation that when both FIIs and DIIs become net buyers simultaneously, there is a likelihood of some profitbooking in the market,” said Santosh Meena, Head of Research, Swastika Investmart Ltd. On the global front, the US debt ceiling issue holds significant importance, alongside US macroeconomic indicators,

movement of the US bond yields, the dollar index and crude oil prices, Meena added. President Joe Biden said a deal to resolve the government’s debt ceiling crisis seemed “very close” late Friday, even as the deadline for a potentially catastrophic default was pushed back to June 5.
“Domestically, attention will be directed towards key macroeconomic data, including GDP figures and monthly auto sales numbers,” he said.
“This week marks the beginning of the new month also so participants will be eyeing high-frequency data viz. auto sales, manufacturing PMI and services PMI data. Before that, GDP data scheduled on May 31, will also be on their radar,” said Ajit Mishra, VP Research,
Religare Broking. PMI data for the manufacturing sector is scheduled to come on Thursday. Apart from these factors, the performance of the US markets amid the ongoing debt ceiling talks will be in focus, he added.
Last week, the BSE benchmark jumped 772.01 points or 1.25 per cent.
Stock markets ended a two-week-long consolidation phase and gained over one-and-a-half per cent.
“After a firm start, the benchmark remained range bound in the middle, tracking mixed global cues however strong recovery in the final sessions changed the tone. Consequently, Nifty managed to surpass the hurdle at 18,400 and settled around the week’s high at 18,499.30 levels,” Mishra said.
The Prime Minister asserted that India is not only a democratic nation but is also the mother of democracy.
“Our democracy is our inspiration, our Constitution our resolve. Parliament is the best representative of this inspiration and resolution,” he said, adding that the new Parliament building was a perfect example of the co-existence of the old and new.
In his remarks, he also pointed out that the construction of the new Parliament building gave employment to 60,000 workers and a digital gallery dedicated to them has also been built in the complex.
The building has been completed in about two-and-a-half years at an estimated cost of nearly Rs.1,200 crore.
The new Parliament
building, constructed by Tata Projects Ltd, will also have a grand Constitution Hall to showcase India’s democratic heritage, a lounge for MPs, a library, multiple committee rooms, dining areas and ample parking space. The triangular-shaped four-storey building has a built-up area of 64,500 square metres. The building has three main gates - Gyan Dwar, Shakti Dwar, and Karma Dwar.
Though President Murmu and Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar, who is also Rajya Sabha Chairman, could not attend the event due to protocol as the Prime Minister was inaugurating the building, their messages were read by Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman Harivansh. Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla also addressed the gathering.
NPF, NSCN (I-M), student unions and GNF flay vandalism of NSF office
(From p-1) Such antisocial activities causing irreparable damage to the properties of the apex student bodies was totally unacceptable, it said.
Further, the unions extend their solidarity and fullest support to the ANCSU and NSF and hoped that the law enforcing agencies would take up the matter with outmost priority and concern and render justice to ANCSU, NSF and the entire students community at the earliest.
GNF: Global Naga Forum (GNF) expressed shock and condemned the heinous and criminal act of vandalism and destruction that took place in the heart of Kohima town.
GNF said that the miscreants, driven by despicable motives, razed the historic office building housing the NSF since 1983, defiling not only a symbol of the Naga struggle for self-determination but also targeting the welfare of Naga students. The forum said it was deeply disheartening to witness the insidious and systematic attempts to dismantle Naga civil society organizations. “Beginning with the fragmentation and delegitimization of the apex Naga civil society’s organizations, it is evident that vested interests with hideous minds are seeking to destroy the fragile fabric of panNaga unity that remains,” it said.
The forum said that destruction of NSF office, an institution representing Naga students across tribal boundaries, was a criminal attack on the very essence of Naga identity and aspirations.
It said that such act, transpired with such precision in the heart of our capital city, raised suspicions that the miscreants acted with tacit support from powerful entities orchestrating this malicious act.
Attempts to intimidate and silence the unity and voice of the Naga nation will not succeed, it added.
The forum said that no human being or entity, no matter how powerful, can destroy the heart and soul
of what it means to be Naga.
GNF firmly declared that this shameful act must be addressed forthrightly, condemned by all, and the persons or group involved should be arrested without delay.
Rather than resorting to such destructive and criminal measures, the forum urged the Naga elders responsible for this act to hang their heads in shame and engage in dialogue to resolve any conflicts of interest.
Furthermore, GNF said it condemned “the cynical motive of resource politics, disguised as claims of original land ownership by the Naga Club, as a pretext for grabbing prime land in the heart of Kohima.”
It said that such claims do not withstand scrutiny of modern law or customary Naga practices. The building and land in question do not possess hereditary ownership, rendering customary law inapplicable, GNF stated. The forum urged upon the authorities to act swiftly, restore justice, and ensure the perpetrators of this shameful and criminal act face the full force of the law. It is of paramount importance that the state takes prompt action to prevent the situation from spiralling out of control, the forum said and conveyed that it stands united with the NSF and the entire Naga community, resolute in the pursuit of justice.
NSF to hold sit-in protest in Kohima from today
(From p-1) on May 13. However, with the intervention of the authorities, they did not come,” he claimed.
According to him, from that day onwards, everything had fallen silent and that NSF did not expect that a vandalisation would take
place.
On the issue of NSF asking for a plot land to be transferred to its name, which was later denied after Naga Club asked the DC to not issue the same, Tep clarified that they had the recordsthat were already in public domain that the
study body was the custodian of the heritage building and that it had always mentioned in its official documents that the building was a house of Naga people.
However, Tep observed that Naga people did not recognise Naga Club. Hence, if the Naga people did
not recognise the organisation, he asserted that NSF too would not recognise it. Regarding the duration of their protest, Tep said they were yet to decide on the issue, but clarified that they did not want to create inconvenience to the public due to this.
(From p-1) Deliberating on the issue of GT seniority list 2022, which was prepared following a judgment of the Kohima Bench of Gauhati High Court, the meeting noted that as the petitioner late G/Ts had discreetly won the case, so the G/Ts filed a review petition at the high court countering the case.
But knowing the consequences, Education department officers and the All Nagaland School Teachers’ Association (ANSTA) had requested the GTs and the late GTs to withdraw their case from the court and settle the matter outside the court with an agreement in principle to count seniority by honouring the seniors.
The GTs in support of the agreement withdrew the case, however the late GTs discreetly had not withdrawn their case. Hence, 2022 GTs seniority list was

The ANGTF alleged that the department was applying different yardsticks to determine the seniority; some were counted from the date of appointment, some from the date of joining, some from date of cabinet decision or date of regularization. In some instances, some students of GTs were now senior to their own teachers. It alleged that the 2003-2004 appointees had superseded their seniors appointed in 1991-1992.
Further, the forum stated that mushrooming of so many groups among the teachers was conceived by the department by the nature of their appointment, which was taking them to court and incurring a huge expenditure from
their hard-earned money. The forum urged the department to seriously look into the matter and solve it at the earliest, while requesting all the member teachers to come forward united instead of remaining a mute spectator. This was stated in a press release by ANGTF convener Veshosa Keyho and secretary Neito Dzüvichü.

Russia launched ‘largest drone attack’ on Ukrainian capital
KYIV, MAY 28 (AP): Ukraine’s capital was subjected to the largest drone attack since the start of Russia’s war, local officials said, as Kyiv prepared to mark the anniversary of its founding on Sunday. At least one person was killed.
Russia launched the “most massive attack” on the city overnight on Saturday with Iranian-made Shahed drones, said Serhii Popko, a senior Kyiv military official. The attack lasted more than five hours, with air defense reportedly shooting down more than 40 drones.
A 41-year-old man was killed and a 35-year-old woman was hospitalised when debris fell on a sevenstory nonresidential building and started a fire, Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko said.
Ukraine’s air force said that Saturday night was also record-breaking in terms of Shahed drone attacks across the country. Of the 54 drones launched, 52 were shot down by air defense systems. In the northeastern Kharkiv province, regional Gov. Oleh Syniehubov said
MOSCOW, MAY 28
(IANS): Charging the US and its allies with “playing with fire” by increasing support for Ukraine amid the conflict with Moscow, including planning to provide it US-made F-16s, Russian Foreign M inister Sergey Lavrov said the delivery of the fighters would be an “unacceptable esclation”.
“Of course, it’s an unacceptable escalation... I think there are reasonable people in the West who understand this. But everything is being dictated by Washington, London, and their satellites inside the EU,” he said on potential deliveries of American-made warplanes to Ukraine in an interview with Russia 1 TV on Sunday, RT reported.

In the first two weeks of the war, army airstrikes targeted RSF camps in and outside the capital, stripping the paramilitary force from its bases.
A man inspects his office damaged by a drone during a night attack, in Kyiv, Ukraine, Sunday. (AP) a 61-year-old woman and a 60-year-old man were killed in two separate shelling attacks. Kyiv Day marks the anniversary of Kyiv’s official founding.
The day is usually celebrated with live concerts, street fairs, exhibitions and fireworks. Scaled-back festivities were planned for this year, the city’s 1,541st anniversary.
The timing of the drone attacks was likely not coincidental, Ukrainian officials said. “The history of Ukraine is a long-standing irritant for the insecure Russians,” Ukraine’s chief pres-
idential aide, Andriy Yermak, said on Telegram.
“Today, the enemy decided to congratulate’ the people of Kyiv on Kyiv Day with the help of their deadly UAVs (unmanned aerial vehicles),” Popko also wrote on the messaging app.
Local officials in Russia’s southern Krasnodar region said that air defense systems destroyed several drones as they approached the Ilsky oil refinery. Drone attacks against Russian border regions have been a regular occurrence since the start of the invasion in February 2022, with
Earlier in May, Ukraine prevented an intense Russian air attack on Kyiv, shooting down all missiles aimed at the capital.
The bombardment, which additionally targeted locations across Ukraine, included six Russian Kinzhal aero-ballistic hypersonic missiles, repeatedly touted by Russian President Vladimir Putin as providing a key strategic competitive advantage and among the most advanced weapons in his country’s arsenal.
Sophisticated Western air defence systems, including American-made Patriot missiles, have helped spare Kyiv from the kind of destruction witnessed along the main front line in the country’s east and south.
The Sudanese army and a rival paramilitary force, battling for control of Sudan since mid-April, had agreed last week to the weeklong truce, brokered by the US and the Saudis.
However, the ceasefire, like others before it, did not stop the fighting in the capital of Khartoum and elsewhere in the country.
In a joint statement early Sunday, the US and Saudi Arabia called for an extension of the current truce which expires at 9.45 pm local time Monday.
“While imperfect, an extension nonetheless will facilitate the delivery of urgently needed humanitarian assistance to the Sudanese people,” the statement said. The statement also urged Sudan’s military government and the rival Rapid Support Forces to continue negotiations to reach an agreement on extending

BEIJING, MAY 28
(AGENCIES): In December, China abruptly abandoned its “Zero Covid” policies amid a surge of infections and rising public anger against lockdowns.
Covid cases again are on the rise, but this time the nation appears to be determined to press on with normal life as the government focuses on reigniting economic growth, New York Times reported.
Though other countries have long settled into such a pattern, it is a shift for China. Until late last year, its national leadership was still ready to lock down whole neighbourhoods and districts, even cities, in a bid to stamp out what were sometimes just small clusters of cases, reports ANI.
The New York Times is a daily newspaper based in New York City with a worldwide readership. The Chinese health authorities have reported a rise in Covid cases since April, especially from newer subvariants spreading worldwide. Zhong Nanshan, a prominent doctor
Sudan military ruler seeks removal of UN envoy
CAIRO, MAY 28 (AP):
Sudan’s military ruler demanded in a letter to the UN secretary general that the UN envoy to his country be removed, officials said Saturday. The UN chief was “shocked” by the letter, a spokesman said.
The envoy, Volker Perthes, has been a key mediator in Sudan, first during the country’s fitful attempts to transition to democracy and then after worsening tensions between military rivals exploded into open fighting last month.
The fighting pits troops loyal to military chief Gen. Abdel-Fattah Burhan against a powerful paramilitary group, the Rapid Support Forces, headed by Gen Mohammed Hamdan Dagalo.
Burhan’s letter to UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres was received Friday. “The Secretary-General is shocked by the letter he received this morning,” U.N. spokesman Stephane Dujarric said. “The Secretary-General is proud of the work done by Volker Perthes and reaffirms his full confidence in his Special Representative.”
Dujarric didn’t reveal
the contents of the letter. A senior Sudanese military official said Burhan’s letter asked Guterres to replace Perthes who was appointed to the post in 2021.
According to the official, Burhan accused Perthes of “being partisan,” and that his approach in prewar talks between the generals and the pro-democracy movement helped inflame the conflict. The talks had aimed at restoring the country’s democratic transition, which was derailed by a military coup in Oct. 2021. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to brief media.
Later Saturday, the U.S. State Department said it supports Perthes and that he “continues to have our confidence.” A statement by spokesman Matthew Miller
said that “we express our concern over the letter from the Sudanese Armed Forces calling for his (Perthes’) resignation.”
erthes declined to comment on the letter. Burhan’s letter came after the U.N. envoy accused the warring parties of disregarding the laws of war by attacking homes, shops, places of worship, and water and electricity installations.
In his briefing to the UN Security Council earlier this week, Perthes blamed the leaders of the military and the RSF for the war, saying they have chosen to “settle their unresolved conflict on the battlefield rather than at the table.”
Burhan accused Perthes last year of “exceeding the U.N. mission’s mandate and of blatant interference in Sudanese affairs.” He threatened to expel him from the country.
The ongoing fighting broke out in mid-April between the military and the powerful RSF. Both Burhan and Dagalo led the 2021 coup that removed the Western-backed government of Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok. The fighting turned the
capit al of Khartoum and the adjacent city of Omdurman into a battleground. The clashes also spread elsewhere in the country, including the war-wracked Darfur region. The conflict has killed hundreds of people, wounded thousands and pushed the country to near collapse. It forced more than 1.3 million out of their homes to safer areas inside Sudan, or to neighboring nations.
who was among the first to openly confirm in early 2020 that Covid could easily spread among people, estimated earlier this week that by late June as many as 65 million people a week could become infected with the coronavirus across China.
That would be up from what he estimated at 40 million infections a week in late May. China no longer publishes regular official nationwide estimates of infections, New York Times reported. By comparison, after “Zero Covid” controls were set aside in December, new infections reached 37 million a day in China at their peak, according to reports.
Even if, as Zhong acknowledged, the pace of rising infections is laden with uncertainty, a rebound in cases was always likely, and many in China appear steeled to live with a background hum of Covid infections, and sometimes Covid deaths, New York Times reported.
“People have become
used to infections, and they see this as normal in the post-Covid era,” Lin Zixian, 36, who works for a technology company in Beijing, said in a telephone interview.
China’s leader, Xi Jinping, still often wears a medical mask when he meets people indoors. But Lin said that he and other members of his family had stopped masking in most public spaces, as have many people in China, New York Times reported.
Officials across China appear to be trying to prepare the population for a rise in infections without reintroducing the heavy controls that by late last year had exhausted public patience.
Since abandoning its tight restrictions on domestic travel, the government has shifted to reviving growth and job creation. The jobless rate of about 20 per cent among urban youth may appear more politically pressing than rising Covid numbers, New York Times reported.

KABUL, MAY 28
(IANS): Afghanistan’s acting Foreign Minister Mawlawi Amir Khan Muttaqi has stressed the need to resort to dialogue to resolve issues between Kabul and Tehran in a meeting with Iranian Ambassador to Afghanistan Hassan Kazemi Qomi, the local media reported on Sunday. Iran’s water rights to the Helmand River were discussed in the meeting and the acting foreign minister emphasised that the issues related to Kabul and Tehran can be resolved through “dialogue and understanding,” Tolonews reported.
Based on an agreement signed between Afghanistan and Iran in 1351 in the Persian calendar, which coincided in 1972, Kabul is obliged to allow Helmand River water to flow to neighboring Iran, Xinhua news agency reported. Tehran has been accusing Kabul of making
excu ses for giving Iran’s share in the water flow, but the Afghan side rejected the allegation, insisting the water level has receded due to continued drought. Muttaqi’s remarks on solving issues between Kabul and Tehran were reported amid border clashes between the border forces of the two countries. One person from the Afghan side and one from Iran were killed in a clash along the border with Afghanistan’s western Nimroz province on Saturday, Afghan Interior Ministry spokesman Abdul Nafi Takour said.

film Anatomy of a Fall has taken the top prize at this year’s Cannes Film Festival.
Director Justine Triet won the Palme d’Or for her tense courtroom drama, which tells the story of a writer accused of her husband’s murder. She becomes the third female director ever to win the prestigious prize, which was first awarded in 1955.
Her thriller stars German actress Sandra Hüller, who also stars in the Cannes runner-up, The Zone of Interest.
As she accepted the award, Triet slammed the French government over its response to recent pension protests.
“These protests were... repressed in a shocking way,” she said in her speech, after being presented with the award by Hollywood star Jane Fonda.
President Emmanuel
Macron’s reforms of the pension system, which include raising the retirement age from 62 to 64, have caused huge protests in France.
Triet also criticised what she called the government’s “commercialisation of culture” - leading France’s Culture Minister Rima Abdul Malak to hit back, saying she was “gobsmacked” by the “unfair” comments.
The Grand Prix, the second-highest prize, went to British director Jonathan Glazer for The Zone of Interest, an adaptation of the late Martin Amis’s novel of the same name about a family living next to Auschwitz.

The breakthrough came in the 18th minute through Kerr, who picked
up a pocket of space inside the box before heading Reiten’s cross past goalkeeper Grace Moloney to make it 1-0.

This is how she was dragged on the streets of Delhi today,” Maliwal tweeted while sharing the picture of Sakshi Malik being forcefully taken into police custody. “This is @ BajrangPunia. He is also an Olympics medallist and PadmaShri, Khel Ratna awardee. He has put his entire career on risk to fight for justice for women wrestlers. “They are the champions of the country, not terrorists!
Embarrassing,” she said in a series of tweets.

LOS ANGELES (USA), MAY 28 (IANS): Two-time Olympic champion Ryan Crouser demolished his own world shot put record at the USATF Los Angeles Grand Prix, the seasons sixth World Athletics Continental Tour Gold meeting.
Crouser added 19cm to the previous world record to register the throw of 23.56m on Saturday.
The previous world record was 23.37m, which the 30-year-old recorded at the US Olympic Trials in Eugene in June 2021.
The explosive world record throw of 23.56m throw
was achieved by the world and Olympic champion on his fourth attempt.
He was already sending remarkable throws into the field before the record -- his first attempt of 23.23m became the joint fifth-longest throw in history and his second attempt of 23.31m is the third-longest throw in history. His series also included marks of 22.94m, 22.86m and 22.80m.

Bayern Munich clinch 11th straight Bundesliga title
BERLIN, MAY 28
(IANS): Front runners Borussia Dortmund were held to a 2-2 draw with Mainz and allowed the second-placed Bayern Munich to snatch their 11th consecutive title and 33rd overall thanks to Jamal Musiala’s last-gasp 2-1 winner against Cologne in the last round of the Bundesliga 2022-23 season on Saturday night.
The German giants knew they needed a victory over Cologne to maintain their chances as well as a draw or defeat from Dortmund against Mainz.
Bayern caught a fairytale start into the last match day as Kingsley Coman finished off a counterattack from the edge of the box into the top right corner with eight minutes gone.
The visitors should have extended their advantage ten minutes later, but Thomas Muller’s header rattled only the woodwork, a Xinhua report said.
Bayern seemed content with the narrow lead but had to be careful as Cologne came close in the
23rd minute when Davie Selke pulled wide from a promising position.
Thomas Tuchel’s boys thought they had made it two just before the break, but Leroy Sane’s goal was disallowed due to a foregone hand ball.
Cologne increased the pressure after the restart whereas Bayern remained harmless and got punished with the equalizer in the 80th minute when Dejan Ljubicic converted a hand
ball penalty to stun the visitors.
Bayern pressed frenetically as a draw wasn’t enough and got rewarded in the 89th minute after substitute Musiala danced through Cologne defence before drilling the ball past goalkeeper Marvin Schwabe to nail the 2-1 win.
“The game pretty much sums up my spell here. We controlled things from the get-go, we took
the lead, but we missed to add more goals. We then handed over control once again and conceded a penalty. Jamal had his moment though and saved us,” said Bayern coach Thomas Tuchel. Elsewhere, Borussia Dortmund gave away the title at the last round as the BVB played out only a 2-2 draw with stubborn Mainz which wasn’t enough due to Bayern’s goal difference.
“Congrats to Bayern, who
sit atop the standings and deservedly defended the title. It is hard though, and it doesn’t feel right. We were 90 minutes away from bringing the title back home,” said Dortmund coach Edin Terzic.
Leipzig completed the season on the third spot after easing 4-2 past Schalke, who relegated after finishing the season on the 17th spot.
Union Berlin booked its berth for the Champions League after finishing fourth thanks to a 1-0 win over Werder Bremen.
Eintracht Frankfurt came from behind and stunned Freiburg 2-1 courtesy of second half goals from Randal Kolo Muani and Eric Junior Dia Ebimbe.
Relegation-threatened Bochum stayed in Germany’s top flight after trashing tenmen Bayern Leverkusen 3-0.
Wolfsburg missed the chance to play in Europe after losing 2-1 to alreadyrelegated Hertha Berlin. Stuttgart shared the spoils with Hoffenheim and will have to go through the relegation play-off while Borssia Monchengladbach overpowered Augsburg 2-0.
The win extends Sabalenka’s 2023 win-loss record to 30-5. She has reached at least the quarterfinals at seven of the eight tournaments she has contested before Roland Garros, and the final at five of them.
The 25-year-old will next take the winner of the match between Panna Udvardy and Iryna Shymanovich. Roland Garros is the only major at which the 25-year-old has yet to go past the third round, but she bolstered her clay-court credentials with a second title in Madrid three weeks ago.
The Australian Open champion has the opportunity of unseating Iga Swiatek at the top of the rankings this fortnight.
