Sonia, Smriti face-off in Lok Sabha

NEW DELHI, JUL 28 (AGENCIES): A high-voltage drama was on Thursday witnessed in the Lok Sabha when Congress interim president Sonia Gandhi and Union Minister Smriti Irani got engaged in a bitter face-off that escalated the already raging row over Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury calling President Droupadi Murmu “rashtrapatni”. Chowdhury’s remark on Murmu has triggered a war of words between the ruling BJP and the Opposition Congress. Meanwhile, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pralhad Joshi has demanded an apology from Gandhi over the same. Chowdhur y issued a clarification on Twitter over his statement on President Murmu and asked the media to refrain from involving ‘madam’ Sonia Gandhi in the row. “If I am at fault, hang me. Don’t

involve madam,” he said amid remarks from the BJP that they felt “threatened” upon Gandhi walking the treasury bench amid the ruckus. Chowdhury said he will apologise to President Murmu but not to “these pakhandis” (hypocrites). As the Lower House of Parliament adjourned soon after 12 noon, Gandhi walked across to the Treasury benches and asked BJP member Rama Devi why she was dragged into the “rashtrapatni” controversy. At the same time, Irani,

who was reportedly seen gesturing towards Gandhi, raised slogans ‘maafi mango’ (apologise) along with a few women BJP MPs as the Congress chief continued her chat with Devi ignoring them. Seeing Gandhi surrounded by BJP MPs, NCP member Supriya Sule and TMC member Aparupa Poddar immediately escorted Gandhi away, while Parliamentary Affairs Minister Joshi tried to calm the treasury benches. Later, Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sithara-

man alleged in the House that Gandhi had spoken in a “threatening tone” to a BJP member, an apparent reference to Irani. Sitharaman claimed that Gandhi told BJP members “you don’t talk to me” when they sought to know what was the issue being discussed. While speaking to the media later, Devi said that Gandhi sought to know why her name was dragged into the issue. “What is my fault,” Gandhi asked Devi, who said she told Gandhi that her fault was that she had selected Chowdhury as the Congress leader in the Lok Sabha. Congress leader Jairam Ramesh termed Irani’s behaviour as “outrageous” and tweeted, “Atrocious and outrageous behaviour by Union Minister Smriti Irani in the Lok Sabha today! But will she be pulled up by the Speaker? Are rules only meant for the Opposition.”

to the ongoing Naga political issue, Dr. Jamir, who stood for peaceful solution with the government of India, lamented that even after 20 years of negotiations, solution to the Naga political issue was nowhere in sight. He said it was time for all Nagas to stand united and to put pressure on the stakeholders to hammer out a solution sooner than later and to maintain peace within Naga society. Dr. Jamir also pointed out that the youth with their enthusiasm, energy and new ideas, could contribute

towards achieving permanent peace in Nagaland. He however cautioned that mere outward exhibition of enthusiasm or concern will not bring peace to Nagaland. He also reminded that the north east region is the corridor between mainland India and Southeast Asian countries and goods and traffic will pass through it and fuel economic growth. Dr. Jamir therefore urged upon the people, especially the youth, to prepare themselves and not to lose the opportunity of reaping economic benefits. For this, he encouraged all youth to become torchbearers of peace and harmony and to have an approach and thinking that was different from the older generation. Dr Jamir, had completed his LLB in 1958 from Allahabad University and was among the firstgeneration lawyers from Nagaland. (Cont’d on p-7)

Massive landslide blocks Nagaland-Manipur highway Correspondent

KO H I M A , J U L 2 8 (NPN): A massive landslide near Khuzama check gate Thursday afternoon completely cut off the National Highway-2 (NH-2) that connects Nagaland and Manipur. According to reports, loose soil from above the road, which uprooted trees, completely blocked the road sometime around 3:30 p.m. Soon after the landslide, excavators were reportedly pressed into ac(Cont’d on p-8) tion to clear the road, but

no work had started till the filing of this report. A subsidiar y road above the highway in the vicinity of the TB hospital was being used by light vehicles to traverse around the blocked road. However, heavy vehicles had started to get stranded from both the sides as there was no alternative route. Though travel advisory was yet to be issued, clearing the landslide could take some time given the size of the landslide. No injuries or damage to properties were reported.

Patton now lauds seat sharing with NDPP Hundreds join two-day ‘Naga Solidarity Walk’

DIMAPUR, JUL 28 (NPN): In a marked departure from his earlier statement, where he expressed unhappiness at not being consulted before deciding on the seat sharing between NDPP and BJP for the 2023 assembly polls, deputy chief minister and BLP leader Y Patton has welcomed the BJP central leadership’s decision for continuance of the 40:20 seat sharing formula. Patton recalled having reiterated on several occasions that the BJP-NDPP alliance would complete its full term and even beyond. He claimed that State Assembly was functioning

smoothly for about four-anda-half years without any hindrance, until an oppositionless government was formed. Patton said a final decision on any issue in any national party solely rested on the “high command”, keeping in view the larger interest of the country and the prevailing situation. He expressed gratitude to the BJP Central leadership for their wisdom to let the alliance continue keeping in mind the national interest and regional context. He appealed to BJP legislators and karyakartas not to be dismayed by the seat sharing arrangement

as it was done in the best interest of the people and as per a long-term vision of the party. According to Patton, what set BJP apart as an organisation was that its every member was committed to serving the interests of the party and people. Hence, Patton called for giving unflinching support to the alliance because it was coming back stronger and better than last time. “Together we shall commit ourselves and strive to strengthen the BJP-NDPP alliance for the greater good of the people of our State setting aside selfish aspirations,” Patton stated.

Nadu government allotted a plot free of cost for setting up Naga patient house in Vellore, adding that a letter has also been received. Understanding the problems and hardships faced by the patients travelling to Vellore for medical

treatment, state chief minister Neiphiu Rio had written a letter to his counterpart on February 1, 2022 seeking allotment of land. As a follow-up up to the letter, Ozukum met Stalin. On the occasion, the minister also advised the

department officials to come up with comprehensive study on construction considering the many incomplete projects under the department. Asserting that the department was facing a big problem to complete the ongoing projects, Ozukum said the projects were not able to complete for more than 20 years. He said it was time for the department to take a call whether to continue or do away with the projects, which cannot be completed. The minister asserted the godown project could not take off due to lack of funds even as the work order was issued in 2006. Ozukum said that the project would

have been completed by 2007 had the fund been provided in 2006. However, he acknowledged the contractor for completing the project within a year after the fund was made available. The minister thanked the contractor for dedicated effort in completing the project. He urged the department to make good use of the godown. He said that taking 20 years to complete a project, which costs Rs.20-30 lakh, was “amazing”. Ozukum said the department needed to filter which projects to be continued or discontinued.

right time for Nagas to come together to build “our” nation as one people for one destiny. He said that in the past, Naga ancestors fought to defend the land with guns

but violence has an expiry date and that period is gone, adding that “today we want to fight for our people with our heart and love.” Dr Sanyü said the Solidarity Walk was aimed at bringing love to replace the hate, harbour unity where there were divisions and that today the people want to fight their heart and love. He said that through the walk the world would come to know that Nagas were one and would go the distance to do the right thing for themselves at the same time to unite Nagas as one and to defend the land. DIMAPUR, JUL 28 (NPN): Minister for Geology & Mining, Soil and Water Conservation, Kashiho Sangtam on Thursday, said although Nagaland was endowed with substantial mineral resources, they remained untapped to their full potential. Speaking at the 42nd State Geological Programming Board (SGPB) meeting organised by the department of Geology and Mining in the conference hall, Kashiho said a selfreliant economy was the vision of every nation or state, and that minerals were backbone for a stable economy. He said the SGPB provided an opportunity for the state and central agencies to exchange scientific views and ideas and to share information about its activities, achievements and future work plans. Kashiho expressed hope that deliberation in the meeting would be fruitful and provide new in-

sights for the department in carrying out its activities. With greatly improved geological knowledge and exploration technology, there is a pressing demand nationwide, to accelerate mineral exploration, Sangtam stated. In this regard, he was optimistic that the department would also be able to generate systematic data on mineral resources and formulate strategies for its exploitation with its pool of technical knowledge, for the benefit of the state. He said that growth

and development were positive impacts of rapid urbanisation, however, he said they also resulted in a number of negative impacts in the context of earth resources such as depletion of groundwater, increased risk of people living in landslide prone areas and other anthropogenic disasters. He urged upon the department to work effectively in formulation of judicious policies and their implementation in order to mitigate impending disasters.

Later, Kashiho expressed hope that the 42nd SGPB meeting would ignite new ideas to tackle challenges hindering progressive work of the department and formulate clear strategies to achieve its vision of sustainable economy of its mineral resources. ground “solely” belonged to Thüvopisümi village. Thüvopisümi Youth Association said their forefathers marked those forest land, valleys, mountains, rivers, streams and lake within their dominion since time immemorial “as bequeathed” by their ancestors’ village Tsüswüzu. The association said it was “delighted” to learn from the media that Pholami Youth Organisation vandalised the property at Dzüdu Lake. It claimed that in 2010, some miscreant burnt down a log cabin at Dzüdu Lake and in 2020, a property was vandalised, however, they could not identify the perpetrators “until voluntary admission made in public by Pholami village youth of their wrong doing through public notice dated July 25.” Thüvopisümi Youth Association said there was “no logic on the part of the property owner to take the consent from the perpetrator to do or undo something in their lawful land”. Rather, the associa-

tion said, it was “a matter of denouncing or settle score against the culprits on the spot by tradition.” In this regard, TYA condemned the “repeated insensitivity actions of vandalising public properties at Dzüdu Lake by Pholami youth”, during which, it claimed that properties worth several lakh of rupees were ruined. It said the existence of two neighbouring villages was known by all including the ownership of Dzüdu lake which stood undisturbed and with Thüvopisümi. “It is a fact that we shared land boundaries but it doesn’t mean we share everything which stand within our domain”, TYA stated. Thüvopisümi Youth Association said “as a peace loving and law abiding” people, they would leave the matter to the public to judge and the established government to expedite the matter.

HEALTHCARE WORKERS SENSITISE PUBLIC, PREGNANT WOMEN ON TIMELY TESTING AND TO AVAIL TREATMENT

Kohima Correspondent/DIPR

DIMAPUR: Nagaland joined the world Thursday in observing “World Hepatitis Day” on the 2022 theme, “Bringing hepatitis care closer to you”. According to World Health Organisation (WHO), 2022 theme aims “to raise awareness about the need to simplify and bring hepatitis care to primary health facilities, community-based venues and locations beyond hospital sites, so that care is closer to communities and people wherever they are.” Kohima: State nodal officer, National Viral Hepatitis Control Programme (NVHCP), Dr. M Nukshisangla Jamir disclosed that Dimapur, Kohima and Tuensang districts were “almost at the top” of the HIV Hepatitis B & C cases in the state. She was presenting the overall NVHCP of the state during the programme in the conference hall of Red Cross building, Kohima on Thursday. Dr. Nukshisangla informed that around 65,730 patients were screened in the entire district for HIV out of which, 1341 were tested positive, bringing the positivity rate to 2.04%. She infor med that out of the 18,530 pregnant women who were screened, 124 were tested positive.

The state nodal officer urged upon the public to get tested, including pregnant women and to seek healthcare for diagnosis and treatment. In his speech, special guest, National Health Mission (NHM), mission director, Dr. Thorhusie Katiry said chronic hepatitis could be prevented and was treatable and that hepatitis C was curable (in most cases). Speaking on the significance of World Hepatitis Day, Kripa Foundation, documentation officer, Meghraj Lama informed that viral hepatitis caused inflammation of the liver that leads to severe disease and liver cancer. Meghraj pointed out that the world was currently facing a new outbreak of unexplained acute hepatitis infections affecting children, adolescents and adults annually. Meghraj said this year’s theme was aimed at raising awareness on the need to simplify and bring hepatitis care to primary health facilities, communitybased venues and locations beyond hospital sites, so that care was closer to communities and people wherever they were. Renbonthung Tongoe shared his story and concerns with regard to the treatments. The programme was chaired by centre-in-charge, ODIC, Kripa foundation,

Congress calls for ‘save democracy’ in Tripura

AGARTALA, JUL 27 (PTI): Alleging that the law and order in Tripura has deteriorated under the BJPIPFT coalition government, the Congress on Wednesday appealed to all the “likeminded parties” to come together to save democracy, lives and properties of the people in the state. The democratic values have been severely destroyed during the present dispensation led by the saffron party, Congress MLA Sudip Roy Barman said in the presence of its state unit president Birajit Sinha. “A sixteen-year-old girl of a minority community was kidnapped by a group of people from Sepahijala district’s Balerdepa area on Sunday. Despite a complaint lodged, police personnel could not rescue the girl, triggering anger among the students,” he said during a press conference. Roy Barman claimed a Congress worker, who was brutally tortured by BJP-backed goons in Badharghat Assembly constituency in West Tripura district is scared of returning home. “The police could not ensure the safety of the hapless person This is the state of affairs”, he said. ation is “worse than that of jungle raj”, the former state health minister said the BJP has “lost people’s trust and the party leaders have already smelt it”. “That’s why it had to loot votes in the byeelection in three constituencies- Town Bardowali, Surma and Jubarajnagar but it could not succeed in the Agartala Assembly segment”, he said. He urged the “like-minded parties to come together on a common platform to save democracy, lives and properties of the people”. “The appeal to bring together like-minded parties for the cause of democracy is noting to deal with the electoral alliance. The electoral understanding is a different issue”, he said without specifying the exact plan of the Congress. BJP chief spokesperson Subrata Chakraborty reacted to Congress’ appeal. “It is now clear that the Congress could do nothing alone. The grand old party is trying to give a mileage to the CPI (M) as it has been doing for several years. The BJP, banking on its good governance and organisational strength, will win the 2023 Assembly elections,” he said.

Seven other people, nabbed by the police on suspicion of being linkmen of the Ansarul Islam, are all teachers of another madrasa in the village. Since 2019, Mustafa had several financial transactions with Ansarul Islam activists Amiruddin Ansari and Mamun Rashid who were arrested in Kolkata and Barpeta respectively a few months ago. Mustafa’s bank accounts have been seized and are being analysed, Natarajan said, During investigations, it has also come to light that he had also given shelter to a ‘wanted person’ of a foreign country in the madrasa who managed to escape. The arrests were made since Wednesday. Meanwhile, the chief minister told reporters that it was a ‘’nationally coordinated operation’’ in which two major terror modules were busted in the state. “Some fundamentalists are active to destabilise Bangladesh, and Assam - a border state - has to face the pitfalls associated with that. We are, however, alert to nab them and destroy the modules,” Sarma said. Regd. No. 1035/22

BJP workers, Rathore said as part of the police investigation houses of his mother were searched as the accused was evading arrest. “We don’t require a search warrant during the course of an investigation. It’s within the purview of law,” the SP added. Prior to his arrest, Marak has denied all charges against him and termed the police raid was a “political vendetta and the police are trying to gun him down in a fake encounter.” Marak, a militant turned politician, is slated to contest from South Tura Assembly constituency segment, which is being held by Chief Minister Conrad Sangma. Apart from the police investigation, the district administration of West Garo Hills on Wednesday has also instituted a magisterial inquiry to probe into several aspects of permissions relating to selling of liquor, water connection, electricity and other civil aspects in the

Lokam Tassar recorded. The case diary and the alleged voice record of the conversation between the accused and the complainant were produced in the court. During the hearing, the counsel for the accused submitted that in the case diary, the investigating officer clearly shows that there is no prima facie case against the accused at this stage. The lawyer of the accused argued that the MLA and the woman had consensual sex and since the former had not given Rs 50,000 demanded by the latter, she had filed a false allegation against the accused.

On the other hand, registering strong denunciation of the ‘violent activities’ of the BJYM members, MPCC lodged a written complaint to the City police station in the afternoon. The MPCC lodged their complaint with a protest rally from Imphal Congress Bhavan to the City police station which was blocked by the police midway. The rebels surrendered with arms and ammunition, Superintendent of Police (SP) Vikram Harimohan Meena said. “It is a historic success for Arunachal Pradesh Police. The concerted efforts, relentless pursuit and humane approach of police… to convince the insurgents to come overground and join the mainstream paid dividends,” Meena said. The militants who laid down arms include a one woman from the NSCN (K-YA) and a cadre of the Eastern Naga National Government (ENNG), the SP said, adding, they were engaged in extortion and collection of taxes. Earlier, several “influential” insurgent leaders have also surrendered in the district and joined the mainstream, in a blow to the underground outfits operating in the region, the senior police officer said.

Alleging that the situ-

ation is “worse than that of jungle raj”, the former state health minister said the BJP has “lost people’s trust and the party leaders have already smelt it”. The BJP, banking on its good governance and organisational strength, will win the 2023 Assembly elections,” he said.

larger outfit - Al-Qaeda in Indian Subcontinent (AQIS). Regd. No. 1035/22

were arrested and five minors were rescued. Police also seized a large number of liquor, contraceptives, knives and other incriminating items from the farmhouse. In another new development, police on Thursday recovered explosives from Marak’s farmhouse, where police had earlier busted a sex racket during a raid on July 22 last. “The recover y was made when a team of Dis-

as part of the police investigation houses of his mother were searched as the accused was evading arrest. Apart from the police investigation, the district administration of West Garo Hills on Wednesday has also instituted a magisterial inquiry to probe into several aspects of permissions relating to selling of liquor, water connection, electricity and other civil aspects in the farmhouse.

AGARTALA, JUL 28 (PTI): Tripura will use nanotechnology for developing rural roads to make them last long, considering the heavy rainfall the state receives, a senior official said on Thursday. The Union Ministry of Rural Development has approved Rs 214.23 crore for constructing 32 roads of 231.64 km in the state under the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY-III), he said. Of it, the state will use nanotechnology for constructing 16 roads of 114.23 km, he added. “Since the entire Northeast receives heavy rainfall, the state has adopted nanotechnology to develop its rural connectivity. Under this technology, the roads will be turned into solid concrete structures by using cement and chemical,” chief engineer, PMGSY (PWD), Bimal Das told PTI. Chips and bitumen are

generally used to construct roads but they get damaged within a few years, wasting crores of rupees, he said. The roads constructed with nanotechnology will last longer, Das said. PMGSY-III focuses on the consolidation of the existing rural roads network by upgrading the through routes and major rural links that connect habitations with agricultural and rural markets, educational facilities, hospitals and administrative headquarters, the official said. “It has also been decided that the state will adopt Full Death Reclamation (FDR) mechanism, a fully mechanised system, for the construction of roads under PMGSY-III to achieve better quality and durability,” he said. Among the 32 roads, four are in North Tripura, one is Dhalai, eight in Khowai, six in South Tripura and 11 in West Tripura.

Members of the BJYM on Thursday converged in front of the Imphal Congress Bhavan located in the heart of the capital city and torched the effigy of Congress chief Sonia Gandhi today, around 10 am. While torching the effigy, some members also threatened to beat those in the MPCC office with sticks while challenging the police on duty who tried to restrain them. They also shouted various slogans against the AICC leaders and declared that they will work tirelessly to root out Congress from the soil of Manipur. Protesting against Congress MP’s remark on President Draupati Murmu, the BJYM members said they were retaliating to a recent burning of effigies of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union home minister Amit Shah by Congress workers who had protested against the Enforcement Directorate’s summoning Sonia Gandhi repeatedly.

Ethanol blending benefitted farmers: PM

HIMMATNAGAR (GUJ), JUL 28 (PTI): Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday said that ethanol blending with petrol, which was 40 crore litres before 2014, has now gone up to 400 crore litres now. The blending of ethanol with petrol has also increased the income of farmers, he said addressing a large gathering after inaugurating various projects of the Sabar Dairy near Himmatnagar town in Sabarkantha district of north Gujarat. The Sabar Dairy is a part of Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation Ltd (GCMMF), which makes and markets a whole range of dairy and milk products under the Amul brand. Modi said sustained efforts by his government, since it came to power in 2014, to increase the income of farmers during the last eight years are now showing results. The government’s decision to mix ethanol with petrol has helped farmers increase their income as ethanol is derived from farm produce

like sugarcane and maize, he said. “Today, the ratio of ethanol blending with petrol is over 10 per cent. Ethanol comes from sugarcane and maize. Before 2014, ethanol blending with petrol was less than 40 crore litres. Today, it has gone up to 400 crore litres,”

Modi said in his address. Apart from farming, the promotion of allied business activities like cattle-rearing, horticulture, fisheries and honey production has also helped farmers in increasing their income, he said. “The income of farmers has increased today

because of the Centre’s sustained efforts during the last eight years. This has benefited landless and marginal farmers the most,” the PM said. “Our strategy to focus on alternative sources of income is showing results. For the first time, the turnover of Khadi and Village Industries has crossed Rs 1 lakh crore mark,” he said. The Khadi and Village Industries sector has generated employment for 1.5 crore people in villages in the last eight years, he said. As the Centre is also working on reducing the agricultural cost, it has not imposed any price hike on fertilisers despite the fact that global prices have gone up manifold in recent times. “We import urea from other countries. Though the global prices have gone up manifold in recent times, we have not passed on that burden to farmers. The government pays Rs 3,500 for a 50 kg bag of urea. But, we sell it to farmers for just Rs 300,” Modi said. The subsidy burden of Rs 500 on the central gov-

ernment on a bag of DAP fertiliser has now gone up to Rs 2,500 due to the exponential price hike in the international markets, he said. Modi also said his government decided to start a movement to ban single-use plastic as he had seen the ill-effects of plastic material when he was the chief minister of Gujarat. “During cattle health fairs, doctors used to remove 15 kg to 20 kg of plastic waste from a cow’s stomach. That is the reason why we have initiated this movement to ban plastic,” he said. On the occasion, Modi remembered the Pal-Chitariya massacre and tribal freedom fighter Motilal Tejawat, who had led a rebellion against the British rule. In retaliation, the British had killed over 1,000 tribal insurgents in Sabarkantha district’s PalChitariya and Dadhvaav villages in 1922. “For the first time, our country’s daughter belonging to a Scheduled Tribe community has reached the top constitutional post.

The people of the country made Droupadi Murmu India’s president. This is a matter of great pride for all 130 crore citizens,” Modi said. “The dream of having an inclusive democracy, as seen by our great ancestors who had sacrificed their lives for the country, is now coming true,” he added. Before his address, Modi visited the newly inaugurated facilities of Sabar Dairy and also interacted with some progressive women cattlerearers of the region. He inaugurated a Rs 305 crore milk powder plant of the Sabarkantha District Cooperative Milk Producers’ Union Ltd, also known as the Sabar Dairy, located near Himmatnagar town. The plant has the capacity to produce 120 metric tonnes of milk powder per day. He had also e-inaugurated the Sabar Dairy’s Rs 125 crore milk processing plant and performed ground-breaking for a cheese plant, which would come up at a cost of Rs 600 crore.

5 Gujarat hooch tragedy: 2 SPs transferred, 6 cops suspended

AHMEDABAD, JUL 28 (PTI): The Gujarat Home Department on Thursday transferred the Superintendents of Police of Botad and Ahmedabad and suspended six other cops following the death of 42 people after consumption of spurious liquor, an official said. Primary investigations by police have revealed that some small-time bootleggers of different villages in Botad district had made the spurious liquor by mixing water with methyl alcohol or Methanol, a highly poisonous industrial solvent, and sold it to villagers for Rs 20 per pouch. According to police, forensic analysis established that the victims consumed methyl alcohol. “We have transferred Botad SP Karanraj Vaghela and Ahmedabad SP Virendrasingh Yadav. Six other police officials, including two Deputy SPs, have been placed under suspension,” Additional Chief Secretary, Home, Raj Kumar told PTI. Those suspended are Ahmedabad’s Dholka division DySP N V Patel, Botad DySP S K Trivedi, Ahmedabad’s Dhandhuka police station inspector K

P Jadeja, Dhandhuka division’s circle police inspector S B Chaudhari and Botad sub-inspectors B G Vala and Shailendrasinh Rana. These officials were suspended for “dereliction of duty and lack of commitment as they failed to stop the transportation, sale and consumption of liquor laced with poisonous chemicals in their respective areas,” say the suspension letters issued by the state Home Department. Forty two people from Botad and neighbouring Ahmedabad district have died so far after consuming the spurious liquor on July 25, while 97 people are still admitted to hospitals in Bhavnagar, Botad and Ahmedabad, Gujarat Minister of State for Home Harsh Sanghavi said on Wednesday. He said police will file a charge sheet in 10 days to ensure quick justice and the government will also appoint a Special Public Prosecutor to fight the case. Fifteen key accused, including the one who acquired the chemical and those who sold the liquor to people, were already arrested, he had said.

Don’t consider report from LNJP for Jain’s bail: Delhi HC Sena seeks disqualification of 12 rebel MPs

Satyender Jain

course of the hearing, the ED argued, that though Jain was in judicial custody since May 30, even after the passing of 46 days, the minister spent only 20 days in the jail dispensary as he was admitted to LNJP for 26 days. ED’s counsel also pointed out the Calcutta High Court’s direction in the case of West Bengal minister Partha Chatterjee

not to admit him into a state run hospital and asked to send him to AIIMS Bhubaneswar. Additional Solicitor General (ASG) SV Raju, appeared for the central probe agency. The ED was challenging the July 6 and July 19 orders passed by the Special Judge rejecting its prayer and sought the medical evaluation of Jain to be

done at hospitals like AIIMS, RML, or Safdarjung, instead of the present health facility. The ED, in its plea, levelled serious allegations as on June 27, the Investigating Officer (IO) in the corruption case visited LNJP Hospital in connection with the crime. However, the official found that Jain was sleeping on the bed without any cannula on his hand and even the multipara patient monitor was switched off and he was not being monitored by any medical instrument. His wife was present in the room, the ED stated. It added, “When the

IO reached the room, the respondent immediately wore the oxygen mask, the BP apparatus belt, and the monitor was switched on. It was under these suspicious circumstances and the fact that prima facie the condition of the respondent was not such which required hospitalisation, an application was preferred (before the trial court) seeking a direction that he may be admitted to any independent hospital like the Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital or AIIMS Hospital at New Delhi for an independent evaluation of his health.”

NEW DELHI, JUL 28 (PTI): Shiv Sena leader Sanjay Raut on Thursday met Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla and sought disqualification of 12 rebel members of the Eknath Shinde faction of the party in the lower house of Parliament. “I have sought disqualification of 12 Shiv Sena rebel Lok Sabha members,” Raut, the leader of the Shiv Sena Parliamentary Party, told reporters here after meeting the Speaker. The 12 Lok Sabha members, owing allegiance to Shinde, had declared Rahul Shewale as their leader

and five-term member Bhawana Gawli as the chief whip of the party. Shewale had insisted that the 12 members had not formed a separate group in the Lok Sabha but had merely replaced Vinayak Raut as their leader in the House. The Speaker had recognised Shewale as the Shiv Sena leader in the Lok

Sabha. After the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, Shiv Sena president Uddhav Thackeray had appointed Vinayak Raut as the party’s leader in the Lok Sabha. Sanjay Raut was appointed as the leader in the Rajya Sabha as well as the leader of the Shiv Sena Parliamentary Party comprising members in both the Houses.

NEW DELHI, JULY 28 (IANS): The Delhi High Court on Thursday directed the trial court not to consider the medical report of Delhi minister Satyender Jain, who is in judicial custody in a corruption case, from the city government-run Lok Nayak Jai Prakash (LNJP) Hospital while deciding his bail application. Justice Jasmeet Singh was hearing the Enforcement Directorate (ED) plea seeking directions that the medical examination of Jain be done at an independent hospital instead of the Delhi government-run health facility. Issuing notice in the matter, the further hearing was posted for August 17 by the court. “It is directed that the special judge shall not consider the medical report from LNJP till the next date of hearing,” the judge remarked. here have been numerous reports of Police in parts of India especially Delhi, having arrested Nigerian drug or fraudsters and in significant number of cases, the women accomplices were reported to be from the north east states. Women and girls from the north east have been the biggest victims who are being ensnared by Nigerian fraudsters or scamsters. According to Delhi Police, the gullible girls from the north east (that also includes Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Arunachal Pradesh, Sikkim and Assam), were lured by the Nigerian fraudsters or drug dealers through the social media by posting photographs and showing how rich they were. Delhi Police also disclosed that they regularly receive complaints from women and girls of north eastern states after falling prey to the nefarious criminal activities of Nigerian fraudster or drug dealing gangs. In several cases, the women and girls from the region, have been arrested for involvement in drug trafficking as conduits for the Nigerian traffickers. Earlier reports revealed, that many women and girls from the region work in beauty parlours or Spas and get befriended with Nigerian men. Soon these gullible women get entrapped into a live-in relationship and then get dragged to become couriers of contraband items. The media used by the fraudsters are Facebook, messenger, e-mail etc through which they convince the victims with offers of marriage, promises of starting businesses, making gifts or opening consultancy services in metro cities. Some became friends with the Nigerian criminals on social media sites or at prayer meetings or church services in New Delhi. Gullible girls wanting to live luxurious life style become live-in partners of their Nigerian friends thinking that they have found a gold mine and soon get into the criminal network, willingly or not. The girls from north east are the easiest prey for the Nigerian gangs, who have found rich pickings in the region as they realise that people love good and easy life. The old modus operandi is to first offer expensive gifts through Facebook or Instagram and then ask them to deposit money as clearance fees. Many women in the Northeast have fallen victim and got duped when such gangs offered cars or diamond sets as prizes of Internet-based lottery and deposit-processing fees, between Rs 50,000 and Rs 1 lakh. In a recent case, a woman reportedly from Nagaland, was arrested along with her Nigerian friend by Meghalaya Police and Delhi Police for their involvement in a Cyber Fraud case at Williamnagar Police Station. Not only gullible people getting preyed upon, cheated, left high and dry and sometimes imprisoned due to associations with Nigerian fraudsters, there is also a continuing bank scam reported even by several banks in Dimapur. It is easy all about getting easy money without worrying about the consequences. Hundreds of people in Dimapur and other parts of the state sell the saving bank accounts with ATM cards for around Rs.5000 to fraudsters without any thought of the consequences. These saving bank accounts and ATMs cards are then used to deposit money obtained criminally and immediately withdrawn. The fraudsters then vanish but those who sold their bank accounts with ATM cards are then left to face the consequences by the law. These incidents reveal the many vulnerabilities of people from the north east to the ‘Act East’ focus from foreigners and fraudsters.

DailyDevotion God’s Purpose or Mine?

He made His disciples get into the boat and go before Him to the other side… —Mark 6:45

We tend to think that if Jesus Christ compels us to do something and we are obedient to Him, He will lead us to great success. We should never have the thought that our dreams of success are God’s purpose for us. In fact, His purpose may be exactly the opposite. We have the idea that God is leading us toward a particular end or a desired goal, but He is not. The question of whether or not we arrive at a particular goal is of little importance, and reaching it becomes merely an episode along the way. What we see as only the process of reaching a particular end, God sees as the goal itself. What is my vision of God’s purpose for me? Whatever it may be, His purpose is for me to depend on Him and on His power now. If I can stay calm, faithful, and unconfused while in the middle of the turmoil of life, the goal of the purpose of God is being accomplished in me. God is not working toward a particular finish— His purpose is the process itself. What He desires for me is that I see “Him walking on the sea” with no shore, no success, nor goal in sight, but simply having the absolute certainty that everything is all right because I see “Him walking on the sea” (Mark 6:49). It is the process, not the outcome, that is glorifying to God. God’s training is for now, not later. His purpose is for this very minute, not for sometime in the future. We have nothing to do with what will follow our obedience, and we are wrong to concern ourselves with it. What people call preparation, God sees as the goal itself. God’s purpose is to enable me to see that He can walk on the storms of my life right now. If we have a further goal in mind, we are not paying enough attention to the present time. However, if we realize that moment-by-moment obedience is the goal, then each moment as it comes is precious.

NAGALAND POST, DIMAPUR FRIDAY, JULY 29, 2022

Post-mortem

Difference of ‘Following Christ’ from Christianity C

hristianity is taken as a religion whereas following Christ is a personal relationship with God. Christianity is viewed as a religious wave rippled worldwide whereas Christ is the fulfillment of historicity and prophecy as the salvation plan of God. Simplicity of following Christ means ‘accepting what he taught in the Bible’ whereas a religion is a practice of psychological issue, ritual gesture and superstitious imaginations under the pretext of a belief. The followers of Hindu mythological gods and deities are called Hindus, Buddhists are who adhere to the teaching of Buddha, so Mahavir for Jains, Guru Nanak for Sikhs in India, and Confucius for Confucianism in China. Similarly, the followers of the Lord Jesus were consequently termed as Christians in Antioch. The Lord taught that he is the Creator (John 1:3; Colossians 1:16). He came to the world (not an avatar) in fulfillment of the Scriptures. The message of his resurrection was vehemently proclaimed worldwide by the apostle Paul who was a staunch opponent of the Way before he met Christ. The Ter m ‘Christians’

The term ‘Christians’ (Acts 11:26) was evolved and generated from ‘Christ.’ Mathematically, Christ+ian is the equation to mean ‘a part of Christ’ for one who renounced the pleasure of the world to follow Christ. In other word, a Christian is an ambassador for Christ. From this term, a nomenclature as ‘Christianity’ was coined as a religion. The birth, life, ministry, resurrection and ascension of Jesus took place in Israel which is strategically located as the center of world powers that time, chosen by God, from where the message rippled to the four corners of the globe through Roman roads and connectivity. The believers of Christ get together to worship God on Sundays having sacramental practices, namely, baptism based on public confession and Lord Supper, remembering the death and resurrection of Christ. These are the ordinances ordained and instituted by the Lord. The followers of Jesus directly worship Jesus, God, without any intermediary or representative images. ‘Following Christ’ is a religion-less faith whereas Christianity is labeled as a religion in the list of world religions. The followers of Jesus do

not belong to a religion. It is a humble and inclusive spiritual form, not an imperialistic and exclusivistic form. It is a common platform for all people. Jesus has room for people of every nation, language and religion (Revelation 7:9). What is more important than a religious nomenclature is a ‘believing heart.’ Similarly, it is not ‘Christianity’ as a religious label but a heart with Jesus as the content. The crux is that people who follow Jesus Christ have eternal salvation (John 3:16). The Message Came to India The Emperor Constantine declared Christianity as the official state religion in 315. Being the dominant world power, the influence of Christianity, by and large, reached nations of the world through missionary wave and sociopolitical impacts. The ancient tradition of India accepts that St. Thomas came to India in 52 CE and died in India. Protestantism that began in 1517 grew worldwide through mushrooming democratic nations. Francis Xavier, called the Apostle to India, came to India, landing at Coromandel, Goa, in 1542, in 1706 the First Protestant Missionary, Bartholomaeus

reached India, William Carey reached India in 1792, Amy Wilson Carmichael in 1895 followed by many subsequent missionaries. Nineteenth Century India witnessed a great emergence of a new indigenous generation in Indian soil with Krishna Mohan Banerjee, Lal Behari Dey, Nehemiah Goreh, Brahmabandhav Upadhyay, P. Chenchiah, V. Chakkari, Sadhu Sundar Singh, and A. J. Appasamy, all finding a way to relate their Christian faith to their Indian context. On the other hand, Transcendental Meditation, Hari Krishna, Buddhism, and Yoga education spread worldwide from Indian soil like the way the message of the Bible came to India following the Apostle Thomas. The message was well received by people in India in their context. The history of India cannot deny many positive values such as education, medical services, social healing and transformation, economic elevation, liberation from past cultural cruelty, and elevating India to global level, contributed by the missionaries. Persecution? Christians in India have apprehension of per-

secution. Constitutionally, there is no provision to persecute the followers of Jesus Christ as people have freedom to choose a faith to follow. For example, people who chose to follow the teaching of Krishna are Hindus, and Buddha as Buddhists. Choice of a faith is the right. As the Lord Jesus is the universal Savior having preexistence even before father Abraham was born (John 5:58), His deity cannot be indigenized though He is worshiped in native and indigenous contextual forms. Mahatma Gandhi, the national father of India accepted the principles and teachings of the Lord (Matthew 5:3-9) and meditated on them. The Lord Jesus advocated non-violence (Ahimsa), loving enemies, principle of non-vengeance (Matthew 5:38-48), and loving poor, needy and neighbors. The Bible teaches about peaceful social harmony like ‘unity in diversity’ (Romans 12:921). There is no way to go against people who practice the teaching of Lord Jesus. Rather, India in particular and the world in general, need to practice what the Lord Jesus taught about love and charity, work and life, peace and unity, and honesty and morality. The

teaching of Jesus transformed the world from revengeful human cultures. Christian persecution will not rise when the followers of Christ are honest to promote Honesty, loyal to promote Loyalty, and free from force-conversion (inducement and proselytization). In a diverse world, who can harm Christ’s followers when they work hard and render good service to people, improve human quality, living the truth and showing the way, and promoting the three indigenous principles of growth: Self-support, Selfmanagement, and Selfwitnessing in their given native soil? The matter is not Christianity as a religion but following Christ with a godly heart in truth. The world understands that the true followers of Christ are a people of accountability and integrity. Like riffraff in other religions, the beauty of Christianity is tarnished by so-called Christians who fail to practice the teaching of the Lord Jesus. The followers of Christ are compared with salt and light (Matthew 5:13,14) of the world. May God bless the readers of this article! Rev. Dr. Phuveyi Dozo Naga United Village

ndia is bent on creating a world record — that of being the most populous country. This is one competition in which we might soon beat our traditional enemy China, but it will be a matter of shame, not pride. Quantity will replace quality. For how long can the education system and the healthcare system, bursting at the seams, be sustainable? The number of the hungry, the homeless and the jobless will escalate; the crime rate will rise too. The rapid deforestation to accommodate the exponential population growth will worsen our deteriorating environment. What a drain on our natural resources, what a strain on our growth potential. I remember the time in the 1970s when the population issue was brought into sharp focus by Congress leader Sanjay Gandhi. Fresh after my post-graduation at AIIMS (All India Institute of Medical Sciences), I had joined as a senior resident in a government hospital. The Emergency that the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi had imposed upon the country was still on. Of the various excesses that took place, one that affected doctors (especially gynaecologists and surgeons) the most was the mass sterilisation campaign, spearheaded by Sanjay Gandhi. One could not impose dictatorship on the largest democracy in the world (there is something to be said for numbers after all) or take such large-scale liberties with the human body. He ended up antagonising the very people for whose welfare he had ostensibly taken this drastic step. Such was the state of affairs that government teachers were not given promotion till they got at least five persons sterilised. Imagine, urging students to get their parents sterilised during a maths class! Ineligible women, be they in the menopausal age group, or those who were already sterilised, were also recruited in a desperate bid to increase the numbers. Sterilisation camps were set up in far-flung areas where asepsis was not up to the mark and, if something went wrong, the patient had to be taken to a hospital miles away. The onus of ‘permanently’ preventing pregnancies fell upon the hapless doctors. Gynaecologists ligated the tubes that transported the egg from the ovaries to the uterus so that the ova and sperm could not meet, thus ending a woman’s reproductive life. Large-scale vasectomies were done by surgeons who tied the fine tube that connected the testicles to the rest of the male genital tract, blocking the passage of sperms. I had been looking forward to honing my surgical skills during my residency in a hospital with such a huge patient load by performing major surgeries like hysterectomies. Sadly, all I got

to do, along with the others in my department, was female sterilisation from 8 in the morning to late in the evening; sometimes even far into the night, when complications occurred as case selection was hurried and poor. We worked long and hard, for our hospital wanted to gain recognition by having the highest score. We did surge ahead of the others, but when the time for accolades came, there was a new government in power and the sterilisation campaign was now considered a major violation of human rights. Today, we have come full circle, for the one thing that has grown by leaps and bounds is our population. Measures have to be taken, and soon, so that we do not displace China from the No. 1 position. As we have seen that decrees are counterproductive and force boomerangs, so how do we go about it without rubbing our people the wrong way? Having worked both in general and corporate hospitals, I have seen that the affluent, who can afford to bring up any number of children, restrict their families, while the poor breed like flies. This could be due to lack of education, early marriage, poor medical facilities and high infant mortality rates in the slums and rural India. This induces people to procreate profusely, in the hope that some of their offspring would survive. In order to curb our population growth, we could adopt the following measures: i) Improve the socioeconomic status of people; it has been seen that in order to maintain a certain standard of living, people opt for small families; ii) Educate the girl child so that she can think for herself, and is not reduced to a baby-producing machine; iii) Ensure ample job opportunities, especially for women; iv) Raise the minimum age for marriage; v) Ensure that daughter after daughter is not produced by families desperate for a son. The girl child should be equally welcomed, loved and given equal opportunities. The Sukanya scheme is one such step in the right direction, the abolition of dowry is another; vi) Healthcare workers should offer contraceptive advice after childbirth or abortion; it should not be forced down their throats, or up their uteri, for that drives them away; vii) Don’t just take away privileges from those with more than two children; give incentives to those with small families, just as under-populated countries like Canada offer free education and other benefits to those who contribute to population control; viii) Use multimedia on a large scale to educate the masses. Huge cash from another flat of WB minister’s aide

KOLKATA, JUL 27 (PTI): The Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Wednesday conducted raids in three locations in and around Kolkata and again recovered large stacks of cash from a flat linked to Arpita Mukherjee, considered a close associate of arrested West Bengal Industry Minister Partha Chatterjee. The unaccounted money was found five days after the agency seized more than Rs 21 crore in cash, besides jewellery and foreign exchange from another flat of Mukherjee, who was also arrested on July 23. The demand for dismissal of Chatterjee from the cabinet grew louder from within the ruling Trinamool Congress and the opposition parties. The federal anti-money laundering agency, probing the money trail of the teacher recruitment scam, also grilled TMC MLA Manik Bhattacharya, a former president of the West Bengal Board of Secondary Education. Since this morning, ED officials conducted coordinated raids at various properties at Rajdanga in south Kolkata and Belghar-

Fuelling speculations about Chatterjee’s future as a cabinet minister, Trinamool Congress spokesperson Kunal Ghosh said it has to be seen how the senior TMC leader sheds the tag of being “influential” without quitting as a minister of several departments. “What he will do is up to him. She was subject to insults by one Union Minister and was Praveen Nettar on the verge of being pushed and injured by the BJP MPs.” Congress leaders Mallikarjun Kharge and Jairam Ramesh met Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla and demanded action against Irani. Meanwhile, three more MPs – AAP’s Sushil Kumar Gupta and Sanjeev Kumar Pathak, and independent Ajit Kumar Bhuyan – on Thursday were suspended from the Rajya Sabha for carrying placards in the House and demanding a discussion on Gujarat hooch tragedy. The killing led to tension and protests at several places in Dakshina Kannada district on Wednesday with instances of stonepelting and police lathicharge being reported.

Task force to be set up to tackle monkeypox NEW DELHI, JUL 28 (PTI): A task force on monkeypox will be constituted to provide guidance to the government on expansion of diagnostic facilities and explore emerging trends related to vaccination for the disease, official sources said on Thursday. The decision was taken at a high-level meeting held on June 26 at the level of principal secretary to the prime minister to review the ongoing public health preparedness and response initiatives against the spread of monkeypox,

the sources told PTI. India has so far reported four cases of monkeypox, with three from Kerala and one from Delhi. The National Aids Control Organisation and Directorate General of Health Services have been asked to work on a sensitive and targeted communication strategy to promote timely reporting, detection of cases and management of cases, the sources said.

Partha Chatterjee sacked from cabinet

The West Bengal government on Thursday removed Partha Chatterjee, who has been arrested by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in a school jobs scam, from the ministry with immediate effect. “Partha Chatterjee, minister in charge, department of industry, commerce and enterprises, department of information technology and electronics, department of parliamentary affairs and department of public enterprises and industrial reconstruction, is hereby relieved of his duties as MIC of the aforesaid department with immediate effect,” an official order said. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee later said at a government event here that she will look after the portfolios held by Chatterjee for the time being. The ED had arrested Chatterjee, who is also the Trinamool Congress secretary-general, on July 23 in connection with its investigation into alleged irregularities in the recruitment drives by the School Service Commission (SSC).

SAGAR, JUL 28 (PTI): A vaccinator allegedly used a single syringe to administer anti-coronavirus vaccine doses to 39 children at a private school in Madhya Pradesh’s Sagar city, prompting the authorities to suspend the district vaccination officer, officials said on Thursday. The incident took place on Wednesday at the Jain Higher Secondary School in the city during a mega vaccination drive, after which a First Information Report (FIR) was registered against the vaccinator, identified as Jitendra Ahirwar, a district official said. The 39 children, aged 15 and above, were from Classes 9 to 12, a health official said. The parents of some of the children on Wednesday observed the vaccinator using the same syringe to inoculate the children and raised an alarm for the gross negligence on his part, the officials said. After the parents protested, Sagar’s in-charge Collector Kshitij Singhal sent district Chief Medical and Health Officer (CMHO) Dr D K Goswami to inquire about the incident. Those present at the spot told Go-

Jitendra Ahirwar swami that the vaccinator allegedly used the same syringe to administer vaccine doses to as many as 39 children, the district official said. After the protest by parents, Ahirwar escaped from the spot and was not found when the CMHO inspected the school. The accused had also switchedoff his mobile phone, Goswami said. Taking serious cognisance of the incident, Sagar divisional commissioner Mukesh Shukla on Thursday suspended district vaccination officer Dr Shobharam Roshan on the basis of the CMHO’s report, another official said. The suspension order was issued by the divisional commissioner, who also directed the collector to appoint another official in place of Dr Roshan, he said.

(From p-1) Meanwhile, speaking on the topic “Legal status, powers and functions of civil society organisations”, assistant professor Kohima Law College and Nagaland Voluntary Consumers’ Organisation (NVCO) president Kezhokhoto Savi said pointed out that civil society organisations (CSO) play a major role in the society by monitoring government actions and initiatives, engaging in advocacy and offering alternative policies for the government, private sector and other institutions. He also said CSOs defend citizen rights, work to change and uphold so-

cial norms and behaviours, hold institutions to account, promote transparency and raise awareness on societal issues, etc. He remarked that CSOs also provide space from where social movements began. Speaking in the context of Nagaland, Savi noted that there were too many CSO like tribal hohos, public organisations, student, youth, women unions, federations, various associations, organizations, unions, councils, etc. from state to district, subdivisions, area, colony and village levels. He posed a question on the gathering if CSOs were truly functioning in

the true sense of the term or were serving as mere mouthpieces of the government or politicians to suit personal agendas and misguiding the public, promoting tribalism etc? Savi said Nagas were desperately in need of a trustworthy CSO which can take decisions without patronage and favouritism or political influence and having the highest ethical standards of honesty and integrity. He mentioned that Right to Information Act (RTI), 2005 was a powerful tool in the hands of citizens and encouraged CSOs to use and expose all wrongdoings by the government.

The programme was chaired by Kinokali Sumi, presidential address delivered by NLSF president Tohuka Achumi and invocation offered by Youth Harvest Ministry, Dimapur, director Rev Kilang Jamir. Other speakers on the occasion included Nagaland University assistant professor Dr Tiasunep Amri who spoke on “The role of pressure groups in a modern democratic society”, social entrepreneur Colo Mero on “The obstacles facing Naga entrepreneurs” and Combined Technical Association of Nagaland convener Meshenlo Kath on “Realities facing pressure groups in Nagaland”.

MANGALURU, JUL 28 (PTI): Karnataka police on Thursday arrested two persons from Dakshina Kannada district in connection with the murder of BJP youth wing leader Praveen Nettar. The arrested accused have been identified as Zakir (29) from Savanoor in Haveri district and Mohammed Shafiq (27) from Bellare, Dakshina Kannada Superintendent of Police Rishikesh Bhagawan Sonawane said. Police said the two accused are allegedly behind the conspiracy to murder Nettar. Earlier, addressing reporters in Sullia taluk of the district, ADGP (Law and Order) Alok Kumar,

High Court as an “influential person”. Chatterjee earlier in the day countered repeated queries by the media on whether he would resign by retorting why he should do so. Hours after Chatterjee’s arrest on July 23, Ghosh had told reporters that presently the party would not remove him as a cabinet minister or the secretary general of the TMC. Amid speculations over his political future, Chatterjee’s official car, used by him for over 15 years, was on Tuesday deposited in the West Bengal Assembly. The TMC mouthpiece “Jago Bangla” (Wake up, Bengal), of which he is the Editor, has also stopped naming Chatterjee either as a minister or the party’s secretary general. The CBI, as directed by the Calcutta High Court, is looking into the alleged irregularities committed in the recruitment of Group-C and D staff as well as teachers in government-sponsored and –aided schools on recommendations of the West Bengal School Service Commission. The ED is tracking the money trail in the scam.

Russia attacks Kyiv area for the first time in weeks

KYIV, JUL 28 (AP): Russian forces launched a missile attack on the Kyiv area for the first time in weeks Thursday and pounded the northern Chernihiv region as well, in what Ukraine said was revenge for standing up to the Kremlin. Ukrainian officials, meanwhile, announced a counteroffensive to take back the occupied Kherson region in the country’s south, territory seized by Russian President Vladimir Putin’s forces early in the war. The Vyshgorod district on the outskirts of Kyiv was targeted early in the morning, and an “infrastructure object” was hit, regional Gov. Oleksiy Kuleba said on Telegram. There was no immediate word on any casualties. Vyshgorod is 20 kilometers north of the capital’s centre. Kuleba linked the strikes to the Day of Statehood, a commemoration that President Volodymyr Zelenskyy instituted last year and Ukraine marked for the time on Thursday. “Russia, with the help

weeks. Russian troops withdrew from the Kyiv and Chernihiv regions months ago after failing to capture either. The renewed strikes come a day after the leader of pro-Kremlin separatists in the east, Denis Pushilin, urged Russian forces to “liberate Russian cities founded by the Russian people — Kyiv, Chernihiv, Poltava, Odesa, Dnipropetrovsk, Kharkiv, Zaporizhzhia, Lutsk.” Kharkiv, Ukraine’s second-largest city, also came under a bar-

rage of shelling overnight, according to the mayor. The southern city of Mykolaiv was fired on as well, with one person reported injured. Meanwhile, the Ukrainian military kept up a counterattack in the Kherson region, knocking out of commission a key bridge over the Dnieper River on Wednesday. Ukrainian media quoted Ukrainian presidential adviser Oleksiy Arestovich as saying the operation to liberate Kherson is underway, with Kyiv’s forces planning to isolate Russian troops and leave them with three options — “retreat, if possible, surrender or be destroyed.” Oleksiy Danilov, secretary of Ukraine’s National Security and Defense Council, said the Russians are concentrating maximum forces in the direction of Kherson, warning: “A very large-scale movement of their troops has begun.” The British military said Ukraine has used its new, Western-supplied longrange artillery to damage

at least three of the bridges across the Dnieper that Russia relies on to supply its forces. Ukraine’s presidential office said Thursday morning that Russian shelling of cities and villages over the past 24 hours killed at least five civilians, all of them in the eastern Donetsk province, and wounded nine. Fighting in recent weeks has focused on Donetsk province. It has intensified in recent days as Russian forces appeared to emerge from a reported “operational pause” after capturing neighbouring Luhansk province. A missile struck a residential building in Toretsk early Thursday morning, destroying two floors. “Missile terror again. We will not give up. ... We will not be intimidated,” Donetsk regional Gov. Pavlo Kyrylenko said on Telegram. Military analysts believe Russian forces are focusing their efforts on capturing the cities of Bakhmut and Siversk in Donetsk province.

safe and secure,” he said. The British Indian former finance minister, who is married to Akshata Murty – the daughter of Infosys cofounder Narayana Murthy, said he would set up a new emergency taskforce working at the heart of the UK’s National Crime Agency (NCA) to launch an investigation into any town or city where significant grooming gang activity has been found and root it out. If elected to succeed Boris Johnson at 10 Downing Street, Sunak promises to force suspects to explain why they have the phone numbers or contact details of children. They will also have to reveal their ethnicity or nationality for the purposes of crime prevention. He also plans to launch a National Grooming Gangs Whistleblower Network to gather intelligence on gangs and create a dedicated database to help the police monitor suspects. Besides, the focus will be on boosting training for frontline police to help them identify victims of grooming gangs and remind officers to serve without fear or favour, including the fear of being accused of racism.

LONDON, JUL 28 (PTI): One of outgoing British Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s key loyalists and supporter of Foreign Secretary Liz Truss as his successor on Thursday accused Rishi Sunak of leading a “ruthless coup” against his former boss. UK Culture Secretary Nadine Dorries has come under attack previously for attacking his choice of expensive suits and shoes, a jibe at trying to paint him as distanced from the cost-ofliving crisis facing the British public at large. “It’s about judgment and it’s about who voters can relate to and who voters think have walked in their shoes and can understand their lives,” Dorries told the BBC, when confronted about the attacks. “I am bitterly disappointed that Boris Johnson was removed via a ruthless coup, as he was, led largely by Rishi Sunak,” she said. Sunak’s personal wealth and that of wife Akshata Murty – the daughter of Infosys co-founder Narayana Murthy, has been referenced repeatedly in a race in which the British Indian former minister has admitted he is the “underdog”.

Sunak said as chancellor he boosted support for victims to record levels – quadruple those under Labour – and a groundbreaking new approach to policing which is helping drive up prosecutions of sex offenders. “As the Prime Minister I will go further. I will make it a criminal offence if you harass women by taking intimate images of them without their consent and will introduce a major crackdown on grooming gangs,” he said. “We cannot let sensitivities over race stop us from catching dangerous criminals who prey on women and I will not stop until we live in a society where women and girls can go about their daily lives feeling

Kim threatens to use nukes amid tensions with US, S.Korea SEOUL, JUL 28 (AP): North Korean leader Kim Jong Un warned he’s ready to use his nuclear weapons in potential military conflicts with the United States and South Korea, state media said Thursday, as he unleashed fiery rhetoric against rivals he says are pushing the Korean Peninsula to the brink of war. Kim’s speech to war veterans on the 69th anniversary of the end of the 1950-53 Korean War was apparently meant to boost internal unity in the impoverished country amid pandemic-related economic difficulties. While Kim has increasingly threatened his rivals with nuclear weapons, it’s unlikely that he would use them first against the superior militaries of the U.S. and its allies, observers say. “Our armed forces are completely prepared to respond to any crisis, and our country’s nuclear war deterrent is also ready to mobilise its absolute power dutifully, exactly and swiftly in accordance with its mission,” Kim said in Wednesday’s speech, according to the official Korean Central News Agency. He accused the United

States of “demonizing” North Korea to justify its hostile policies. He said U.S.-South Korea military drills targeting North Korea show the U.S.’s “double standards” and “gangsterlike” aspects because it brands North Korea’s routine military activities — an apparent reference to its missile tests — as provocations or threats. Kim also alleged the new South Korean government of President Yoon Suk Yeol is led by “confrontation maniacs” and “gangsters” who have gone further than previous South Korean conservative governments. Since taking office in May, the Yoon government has moved to strengthen Seoul’s military alliance with the United States and bolster its capacity to neutralise North Korean nuclear threats including a preemptive strike capability.

BEIJING, JUL 28 (AP): Beijing grumbled but swallowed its irritation in 1997 when then-Speaker Newt Gingrich of the US House of Representatives visited Taiwan, the island democracy claimed by the mainland’s ruling Communist Party as its own territory. China had other priorities. President Jiang Zemin’s government was preparing to celebrate Hong Kong’s return and wanted to lock in Beijing’s emergence from diplomatic isolation after its 1989 crackdown on prodemocracy demonstrations in Tiananmen Square. Gingrich, a booster of closer US-Chinese ties, had just helped that campaign by meeting Jiang in Beijing. China avoided a disruptive clash with Washington. A quarter-century later, conditions have changed drastically. Chinese President Xi Jinping’s government is richer, more heavily armed and less willing to compromise over Taiwan following news reports the current speaker, Nancy Pelosi, might become the most senior US official since Gingrich to visit the island. SL Prez Ranil says his govt will focus on fixing economy, ending fuel shortage C O LO M B O, J U L 2 8 (PTI): Sri Lankan President Ranil Wickremesinghe has said his government’s main priorities are to fix the country’s ailing economy and end the severe fuel shortage that has exacerbated after the last shipment under the Indian credit line arrived here in June. Addressing a gathering at his party headquarters on Wednesday, the newly-elected president said his government was not against peaceful protest and would allow them all the time if the protesters did not break the law. “I became the president at a most difficult time for the country. We have to set the economy right,” he said. Wickremesinghe said his government’s main task was to first reduce the length of fuel queues and then eliminate them completely. Since June 27, the government has stopped fuel supplies and restricted essential services. Minister of Power and Energy Kanchana Wijesekera said on Monday that Sri Lanka will restrict fuel imports for the next 12 months as it is facing a severe shortage

of foreign exchange and announcing a rationing system for the distribution of fuel across the crisis-hit island nation. “QR system was introduced since the daily fuel demand cannot be fulfilled. Due to Forex issues, Fuel imports have to be restricted in the next 12 months,” he said. Sri Lanka, a country of 22 million people, is under the grip of an unprecedented economic turmoil, leaving millions struggling to buy food, medicine, fuel and other essentials. The severe foreign exchange shortage has hampered the import of fuel and other essentials in the country reeling under the worst economic crisis in seven decades. Many incidents of violence have been reported

at fuel stations and nearly 20 people have died of exhaustion after spending several days continuously in long queues. Since the beginning of this year, Sri Lanka relied on an Indian line of credit to fund fuel purchases. Sri Lanka, which relied on an Indian credit line for fuel imports till February, has now exhausted the facility. The last fuel shipment under the Indian credit line arrived on June 16. Sri Lanka’s fuel and energy sectors are the worst hit by the forex shortages triggered by the unprecedented economic crisis. The Indian credit lines for fuel and essentials provided a lifeline while the island nation was struggling to seek an IMF package. An expected bail-out package with the IMF has been delayed due to difficulties to reach a staff-level agreement after the process got underway in April. The worst economic crisis since 1948 led to a debilitating political crisis in Sri Lanka where former President Gotabaya Rajapaksa was forced out of power due to his poor handling of the economy.

cratically elected government, which the mainland says has no right to conduct foreign relations. The timing adds to political pressure. Xi is widely expected to try to award himself a third fiveyear term as party leader at a meeting in the autumn. That could be undercut if rivals can accuse Xi of failing to be tough enough in the face of what they consider American provocation. Pelosi has yet to confirm whether she might visit, but Beijing is warning of “forceful measures” including military action if she does. The United States “must not arrange for Pelosi to visit Taiwan,” a Chinese Ministry of Defense spokesman, Tan Kefei, said Tuesday. “If the United States

That suggests Beijing sees her as President Joe Biden’s subordinate, instead of his equal as head of one of three independent branches of the government. Biden told reporters the American military thinks a visit is “not a good idea right now”. But, possibly in deference to her position, the president hasn’t said Pelosi shouldn’t go. US officials told The Associated Press that if Pelosi goes, the American military would likely use fighter jets, ships and other forces to provide protection for her flight. Chinese rhetoric about that is “quite disturbing,” the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Gen Mark Milley, told the Australian Broadcasting Corp. “If we’re asked, we’ll do

looking way, and reached four consensuses.” The Commanders meeting discussed the settlement of the friction points along the Line of Actual Control (LAC), the China military online, the official portal of the Chinese military, quoted Sr. Col. Wu as saying. They reached a fourpoint “consensus,” he told an online media briefing here on Thursday. Asked to elaborate on the consensus, he said the first point was to adhere to the political guidance and earnestly implement the important consensus reached by the leaders of the two countries. The second consensus was to focus on the overall situation and maintain the resumption momentum of bilateral relations, he said. The third consensus was to effectively manage and control differences, and safeguard the security and stability in border areas until the issue is solved.

what is necessary in order to ensure a safe visit.” US officials have said the administration doubts China would take direct action against Pelosi herself or try to sabotage the visit. But they don’t rule out the possibility that China could escalate provocative flights of military aircraft in or near Taiwanese airspace and naval patrols in the Taiwan Strait should the trip take place. And they don’t preclude Chinese actions elsewhere in the region as a show of strength. Taiwan and China split in 1949 after a civil war that ended with a communist victory on the mainland. Both governments say they are one country but disagree about which is the national leader. The two sides have no official relations but are connected by billions of dollars of trade and investment. The United States switched diplomatic recognition from Taipei to Beijing in 1979 but has extensive commercial and unofficial ties with the island. US law obligates Washington to make sure Taiwan has the means to defend itself. Beijing hasn’t hesitated to try to intimidate Taiwan with shows of force.

Zhang Guiqi, 49, who is widely known by his penname Lu Yang, was sentenced to six years’ imprisonment by the Liaocheng Intermediate People’s Court, which found him guilty two years ago of “incitement to subvert state power”, RFA reported. “They informed his family by phone that he has been sentenced,” Independent Chinese PEN’s freelance coordinator Zhang Yu told RFA. “He was convicted of incitement to subvert state power, sentenced to six years in prison and deprived of political rights for three years.” Lu pleaded not guilty, and plans to appeal, Zhang said. “(His family) wanted to see the judgment, but they wouldn’t show it to them because they said it was a crime involving national security, and was a state secret,” Zhang said.

LONDON, JUL 28 (PTI): Rishi Sunak has vowed to hunt down and stamp out grooming gangs who prey on children and young women, and make their ringleaders subject to maximum life sentences as part of his campaign pledge to be elected Conservative Party leader and the next British Prime Minister. Under a government headed by him, the Ready4Rishi campaign team said on Wednesday evening that members of grooming rings will automatically face criminal charges for belonging to or facilitating the activity of the gang, with those at its heart facing life sentences. In a further crackdown on sex offenders, the former chancellor will ban so-called “down-blousing”, where perpetrators take photos down a woman’s top without their consent to curb abuse targeted at women and bring more offenders to justice. “Sexual violence against women and girls should be treated as a national emergency until it has been defeated. BEIJING, JUL 28 (PTI): China’s military on Thursday said that a four-point “consensus” has been reached at the recent Corps Commander-level meeting with India which included maintaining the momentum of resumption of bilateral ties, effectively managing differences and safeguarding the stability at the borders. India and China failed to make any breakthrough in resolving outstanding issues on the remaining friction points in eastern Ladakh at the 16th round of military talks on July 17, but agreed to maintain dialogue to arrive at a mutually acceptable resolution at the earliest. A day after the talks, the two sides, in a joint statement, reaffirmed that the resolution of the pending issues would help in the restoration of peace and tranquillity along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in the region and enable progress in bilateral relations.

Therefore, the researchers believe that developing personalized treatments based on an individual’s risk of experiencing severe infection symptoms is the most logical approach. Symptoms of monkeypox may include: Fever Chills Headache Muscle aches Backache

Exhaustion Swollen lymph nodes Cough or sore throat (sometimes) Runny nose Rash with blisters Rash with blisters can appear 1-3 days after or before fever. The rash often begins as flat red patches, progresses to blisters, and finally forms a crust. In

some cases, the rash occurs around the mouth, genitals, or anorectal regions. The bumps then go through many phases before falling off. The rash may have the following characteristics: Fat, discolored bumps (macules) Raised areas of skin (papules) Blisters or vesicles Small pus-filled bumps (pus-

The virus enters the body through damaged skin (even if it is not apparent), respiratory tract, or mucus membranes (eyes, nose, or mouth). lthough many cases of monkeypox resolve on their own, antiviral treatment may be considered for people who are more likely to get severely ill, such as the immunocompromised. The smallpox vaccine can prevent monkeypox disease approximately 85% of the time. No one has died of monkeypox to date. However, monkeypox can lead to complications like pneumonia or encephalitis, which may be fatal. How is monkeypox treated? The FDA has not approved any treatments for monkeypox. However, the Center for Disease Control and Prevention suggests using antiviral medications during an outbreak and for patients who are at high risk of severe illness. Vaccines including Jynneos and ACAM2000 may be used to lessen the severity of the disease. Although there are no specific treatments for monkeypox infection now, outbreaks can be managed with the following measures. Supportive care Though most monkeypox patients recover without needing medical attention, those with gastrointestinal symptoms require oral or intravenous rehydration to prevent fluid loss. Medications to treat pain, fever, and other symptoms may be prescribed as part of supportive care. Rashes and affected areas should be kept dry if possible or covered with a moist dressing. Patients are advised to avoid touching sores in the mouth or eyes and avoid products containing cortisone when rinsing the mouth or using eye drops. Antiviral treatment Tecovirimat: Tecovirimat is the first FDA-approved antiviral treatment for smallpox in adults and children, and it is being considered for the treatment of monkeypox. Tecovirimat works by inhibiting the viral envelope protein, which blocks the final steps of viral maturation and subsequent release from the infected cell, preventing viral spread within the infected host. Brincidofovir and cidofovir: These disrupt viral multiplication by inhibiting viral DNA polymerase that is involved in virus multiplication. Studies have shown that they could be effective against monkeypox infections. However, research is limited. Va c c i n i a v a c c i n e (smallpox vaccine) and vaccinia immune globulin (VIG) VIG, a hyperimmune globulin, is FDA-authorized as a treatment approach against monkeypox. Popp double sends Germany into Euro final

MILTON KEYNES, JUL 28 (AGENCIES): Prolific striker Alexandra Popp scored twice as Germany beat France 2-1 in their Euro 2022 semi-final on Wednesday to set up a clash with hosts England in Sunday’s final at Wembley. The Germans, eight times European champions, will take on an England team on a high after their 4-0 thrashing of Sweden in Tuesday’s other semi. “We played an amazing game and threw everything in,” said Popp, who has scored six goals in five games at the tournament after a lengthy spell of injury troubles. “We are incredibly happy; nobody expected us (to do it). We’re in the final at Wembley against England — it doesn’t get any better than that.” “We earned our selfconfidence in all the games. The team is just great; they have my back and are happy with me after my whole story of suffering,” she added. Popp fired Germany ahead in the 40th minute,

sneaking in from the left to meet a fine cross from Svenja Huth and beat Pauline Peyraud-Magnin with a crisp finish. The lead lasted less than four minutes, however, as France levelled when Kadidiatou Diani unleashed a fierce drive on the turn which rattled off the post and flew in off the back of Germany keeper

Merle Frohms. France had the better chances after the break, putting intense pressure on the German defence, but they could not find a way through. Diani set up Selma Bacha, whose goalbound shot was blocked by KathrinJulia Hendrich and then Wendie Renard’s header at the back post was well

saved by the alert Frohms. The lively Diani then intercepted a poor back pass and burst forward but Frohms kept out her low drive from a tight angle. Popp won the contest with her sixth goal in five games in the tournament, powering a superb header home from another excellent Huth cross in the 76th minute.

France continued to push, but with increasing desperation -- Bacha went close with a curling first-time effort and Clara Mateo saw an effort fly just over the bar. But in the end it was Popp who proved the difference and England will need to find a way to stop her if they are to win their first title against the country which has dominated European women’s football for so long. The enterprising French team, who had impressed many during this tournament, were left to rue the chances they couldn’t turn into goals. “I wasn’t surprised by Germany because we knew that they were a very big team offering a lot of intensity. They were efficient, unlike us. We will learn from it,” said Bacha. “All that was missing was efficiency. We are not going to discard everything. We can be proud of our journey. No one thought we were going to make it to the semi-finals. Next time it will be the final. You really have to believe in it and never give up.”

Along the way he recorded the second quickest T20I half century ever for South Africa, but eventually perished with the run-rate sky-rocketing leading to the Proteas finishing on 193 for eight. One area where South Africa faltered apart from the batting was in the field where they let themselves down by some poor catching, allowing England to amass more runs than it should have. Only pacer Lungi Ngidi impressed from the bowling attack, with a good return of five for 39, his maiden career fivewicket haul, which began by dismissing Jason Roy and Jos Buttler in power-play. BRISTOL, JUL 28 (IANS): A thrilling 72 by Tristan Stubbs was not enough for South Africa to avoid a 41run defeat at the hands of England in the opening T20I at the Seat Unique Stadium in Bristol on Wednesday. In an entertaining runfest, England batted first and amassed a record total of 234 for six after being pushed into batting first and had an innings that included 20 sixes. Jonny Bairstow shined with 90 off 53 balls while Moeen Ali’s 18-ball fifty and Dawid Malan’s 23-ball 43 gave him great support. In the pursuit of 235, the tourists then lost key wickets early on in the chase with only Reeza Hendricks (57 off 33 balls, 9 fours, 1 six) shining as they looked to be heading for a big defeat. But Stubbs, who made his inter national debut against India in the previous T20I series but did not get to bat in the two games he played, showed remarkable

Modi declares open FIDE 44th Chess Olympiad India cruise to ODI series sweep over WI

CHENNAI, JUL 28 (PTI): Prime Minister Narendra Modi declared open the FIDE 44th Chess Olympiad here on Thursday, and encouraging the players, said that in sports there are no losers, but winners and future winners. “Sports is beautiful because it has inherent power to unite. Sports brings people and societies closer. Sports nurture a spirit of teamwork,” he said. The Chess Olympiad, the most prestigious tournament, is hosted by India, the home of chess at a special time in its history, which marks 75 years of freedom from colonial rule, he said. The 44th Olympiad has been a tournament of many firsts and records and this is the first time the Chess Olympiad is being held in the place of origin of chess, India, he said. It is coming to Asia for the first time in 3 decades. In his address during the inaugural at the Jawaharlal Nehru Indoor Stadium, Modi said it is an honour to have international chess players at such a special time. “In sports there are no losers, there are win-

ners and there are future winners,” he said. “May the 44th Chess Olympiad in Chennai be an enriching experience for everyone. Best wishes to all the participants.” The Prime Minister said there has never been a better time for sports in India than the present. “India had its bestever performances in the Olympics, Paralympics and Deaflympics. We achieved

glory even in sports where we had not won earlier”, he said. India’s sporting culture is becoming stronger due to the perfect mix of the energy of youth and the enabling environment, he said. The PM, as in the events held in Tamil Nadu in the past began his speech by uttering the Tamil word for greetings, ‘Vanakkam.’ He said that in a short

period of time, the organisers have made outstanding arrangements. The Tamil Nadu government along with the Centre’s full support is hosting the event. Assuring the best hospitality to players from far and wide, Modi quoted the ‘Athithi Devo Bhava’ slogan which means ‘our guests are like God.’ Also, the Prime Minister cited Tamil saint poet Tiruvalluvar’s couplet on

the significance of hospitality. He assured the players that they would get all help to bring their talent on their boards. The Prime Minister said that the event has the highest ever number of countries participating, highest ever number of teams and highest number of entries in the women’s section. “Even God played a game of chess with a princess,” he said. The reference was to a Lord Shiva temple in Tiruvarur district which has a connect to chess. The presiding deity of the temple is “Sathuranga (name for chess in Tamil) Vallabhanathar”. The Prime Minister said Tamil Nadu hence has a strong historical connection with chess and it is a chess powerhouse for India. “It has produced many of India’s chess grandmasters. It is home to the finest minds, vibrant culture and the oldest language in the world, Tamil.” Tamil Nadu temples have sculptures representing different sports and thus sports is always considered divine in Indian culture, he said.

PORT OF SPAIN, JUL 28 (IANS): Openers Shubman Gill and Shikhar Dhawan hit half centuries as India completed a series sweep over West Indies with an emphatic 119-run victory in a rain-affected clash in Port of Spain. There were plenty of delays during India’s innings, with the visitors forced to hit out late after a weather break saw the match initially reduced to 40 overs per side. Another rain delay at the end of the 36th over saw India’s innings completed even earlier, with the visitors posting a decent total of 225/3 from their allotted overs. Opener Shubman Gill was the standout with a career best 98*, while stand-in skipper Shikhar Dhawan (58) hit his second half-century for the series. Gill was deservedly named Player of the Match and Player of the Series for his heroics during the tour, with the young right-hander scoring two half centuries and a total of 205 runs from three hits. It goes to show that India are compiling some good depth in their whiteball squads, with Shreyas Iyer, Axar Patel, Shardul

Thakur and Yuzvendra Chahal also showing good signs during the three-match series. Experienced pacer Mohammed Siraj chipped in with two wickets early in West Indies’ run chase on Wednesday, while Chahal finished the job by picking up four scalps of his own during an impressive spell. West Indies’ form in 50-over cricket has been surprisingly poor of late, with the Caribbean side now sitting on a nine-match losing streak after consecutive series losses against Pakistan, Bangladesh and now India. While there were plenty of positive signs in the first two matches of the series against India, the third and final game was

completely one-sided as the hosts struggled to match it with their opponents. Spinner Hayden Walsh picked up two wickets - but conceded 57 runs from his 10 overs - while West Indies’ top-order failed to come to grips with India’s new-ball bowling attack. Skipper Nicholas Pooran and righthander Brandon King each scored 42 in this match, but there were plenty of failures as a disappointing series came to an end for Phil Simmons’ side. Brief Scores: India 225/3 in 36 overs (Gill 98 not out, Dhawan 58; Walsh 2-57) beat West Indies 137 in 26 overs (Pooran 42, King 42; Chahal 4-17, Siraj 2-14) by 119 runs (DLS)

NEW DELHI, JUL 28 (IANS): The Union Cabinet, chaired by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on Wednesday approved the ‘Signing of Guarantees’ for the hosting of FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup 2022 in India. The seventh edition of the women’s under-17 football World Cup will be hosted in India from October 11 to 30. The Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, under the guidance of Hon’ble Minister, Shri Anurag Thakur Ji, has been very

Asia Cup 2022 officially shifted from Sri Lanka to UAE

DUBAI, JUL 27 (IANS): The 2022 edition of the Asia Cup was on Wednesday officially shifted from Sri Lanka to the UAE. However, Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) will remain the hosts of the marquee multination tournament, which will be played in middleeast Asia between August 27 and September 11. The decision to move the tournament out of Sri Lanka was taken due to the ongoing political turmoil in the island nation. “The Asian Cricket Council (ACC) is eagerly looking forward to conducting its much-awaited Asia Cup tournament from August 27th to September 11th, 2022, as scheduled,” a Asian Cricket Council statement said. “However, considering the prevailing situation in Sri Lanka, the ACC after extensive deliberation has unanimously concluded that it would be appropriate to relocate the tournament from Sri Lanka to the UAE,” it added.

Sri Lanka is going through one of its worst crisis with supplies of food and fuel drying up. The country has still been able to host bilateral cricket, with Australia and Pakistan making the trip over, but with the Asia Cup being a multi-team tournament, the challenges of hosting it in the midst of economic turmoil were considered a tough task. BCCi secretary and ACC President Jay Shah said that every effort was made to host the Asia Cup in Sri Lanka and the decision to shift the venue to the UAE was taken after much deliberation. “Ever y effor t was made to host the Asia Cup in Sri Lanka and the decision to shift the venue to the UAE was taken after much deliberation. The UAE will be the new venue while Sri Lanka will continue to retain hosting rights. This edition of the Asia Cup is extremely important as it will help Asian nations prepare for the ICC World Cup, and I thank the SLC and the Emirates Cricket Board for their understanding and cooperation,” said Shah. The six-team Asia Cup will be played in the T20 format this year as a precursor to the T20 World Cup in Australia. The UAE also hosted the previous edition of the tournament, in the ODI format in 2018, an event that was won by India.

BIRMINGHAM, JUL 28 (IANS): Two days before the Indian women’s T20 cricket team meets archrivals Pakistan in a preliminary league match in the cricket competition in the Commonwealth Games, the two countries were scheduled to meet in another sport that is unlikely to create much buzz. But the preliminary round match may not go ahead as there are reports that Pakistan may not send their team because of the team’s inability to win a medal. Even if the team takes the court in the Mixed Team competition their clash with India is unlikely to create much buzz because the two teams come from the opposite ends of the spectrum. India, who emerged as the most successful team in Gold Coast with six medals

PV Sindhu and Kidambi Srikanth

-- the same as England who had a silver medal less, are the defending champion in the Mixed Team competition having won the title four years back in Gold Coast ahead of Malaysia. They have in their ranks stars like former World No 1 and ex-World Champion PV Sindhu, the two-time Olympic medallist, Kidambi Srikanth, silver medallist in the World Championship in December 2021 and Lakshya Sen, bronze med-

allist in the World Championship who had made a brilliant start to the year by winning the India Open and finishing runner-up in the All-England Championship here. In the men’s doubles, Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty are ranked eighth in the World. Besides Pakistan, the other teams in Group 1 are Australia and Sri Lanka in the four-team preliminary round. The other

three groups in the 16-team competition are: Group 2 -- hosts England, Singapore, Mauritius and Barbados; Group 3 -- Canada, Scotland, Maldives and Uganda while Group 4 will have second seed Malaysia, South Africa, Jamaica and Zambia, who came in place of Nigeria who pulled out after the draw was made a few weeks back. The top two teams after the preliminary round matches will qualify for the knockout quarterfinals. India and Malaysia are likely to contest for the gold medal if things go as per the seedings. However, Indian players like Srikanth and Lakshya have had indifferent results in BWF tournaments in the buildup for the Commonwealth Games, and therefore the team management is likely to put them up in the first few matches to help them

warm up for the tougher encounters later in the competition. India are the world champion in men’s team competition having won their maiden Thomas Cup title a few months back and Sindhu is also in top form and won the Singapore Open earlier this month. She will be the favourite for the singles title while in men’s singles, Singapore’s Loh Kean Yew, the reigning World Champion, and Malaysia’s Lee Zii Jia are ranked higher than the Indian players and will be the favourite for the title. In the 2018 edition, Sindhu and Saina Nehwal contested the women’s singles final with Saina winning the gold. This time around Sindhu looks the best suited to win the women’s title as World No 7.

Allen’s maiden T20I ton helps NZ beat International Boxing Day to celebrate Scotland by 68 runs in series opener courage, fairness, diversity of boxing

EDINBURGH, JUL 28 (IANS): After securing a 3-0 series victory over Ireland, New Zealand continued their winning run, crushing Scotland by 68 runs in the T20I series opener at the Grange Cricket Club in Edinburgh. It was a stroll in the park for the tourists who posted 225-5 in their 20 overs, on the back of opener Finn Allen’s maiden T20I century, 101 off 56 balls, laced with eight fours and six sixes. In reply, Scotland never really got going in a mammoth chase of 226 and lost wickets in quick succession to end up at 157-8 in their 20 overs. Pushed into batting first, Scotland thought they had Martin Guptill out early in the innings off Chris Sole. But he was adjudged to have bowled a no ball despite having Guptill caught at cover point. Guptill and Allen put on 85 runs for their opening partnership before the former was caught behind off a top-edge on the pull by wicketkeeper Matthew Cross off the bowling of Richie Berrington for 40. Glenn Phillips then made 23 off 16 balls before he fell to Hamza Tahir when Michael Leask took a smart catch. Allen continued on his merry way though and brought up a brilliant century before he was stumped by Cross off the bowling

of Mark Watt. His 101 had come off just 56 balls and he hit 14 of New Zealand’s 29 boundaries in the innings. Allen also became the fifth New Zealand man to hit a T20I century. Daryl Mitchell made 23 not out and Jimmy Neesham smacked 30 off just nine balls as the Black Caps reached a daunting total. For the hosts’, Berrington took 1-13, Tahir took 1-28, fellow spinner Watt 1-32 and Sole took a wicket, but leaked 72 runs. In reply, Scotland openers George Munsey and Calum MacLeod put on 62 for the first wicket before the former was caught by Allen in the ninth over off the bowling of leg-spinner Ish Sodhi. Scotland then endured a batting slide as Ollie Hairs, MacLeod, Berrington and Cross fell to leave the hosts’ at 88-5

LAUSANNE, SWITZERLAND, JUL 28 (IANS): The one-month countdown to the International Boxing Day (IBD) has begun, with the celebration taking place on August 27 worldwide. Courage, fairness and diversity of boxing will be the main values of the celebration this year. As it is currently the ‘Year of Africa’, the central celebration will take place on the continent on August 27. National Federations all around the world are encouraged to organise their celebrations on-site with various activities, including training and master classes, communication

between young boxers and champions as well as social initiatives. “The more people that are involved in boxing, the better for the development of our sport,” IBA president Umar Kremlev said. “I sincerely welcome everybody to try boxing. You might never become a top-level athlete, you may even not have a real fight in the ring, it does not matter. What really matters is that boxing will give you as much as it gives to everyone involved: courage, strength, competitive spirit, self-confidence and much more. From our side, we are about ensuring the fairness

of boxing, its diversity and equality to give everybody a fair chance.” “IBA is the home of boxing for everyone involved in the sport. I would like to remind everyone that boxing is a universal sport with equal opportunities. It challenges you and brings you joy and the satisfaction of overcoming yourself. People do not need much to practice boxing, it is accessible in every corner of the world,” he added. The Inter national Boxing Day was originated by Kremlev in 2017 and transformed from a national celebration to an international one.

in the 13th over. Although Chris Greaves made 31 off 22 balls, Michael Leask chipped in with 12, Watt made 17 not out off 12 balls and Safyaan Sharif chipped in with 14, it was not enough for Scotland to avoid a crushing loss at home. Sodhi was the star bowler for New Zealand, picking 4-28 and equaling his best-ever bowling figures in T20I cricket. The visitors will now play the second and final T20I of the series at the same venue on Friday, followed by a one-off ODI on Sunday.
