Correspondent
SHILLONG, JUN 1: Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma flagged off the Prime Agriculture Response Vehicles at Upper Shillong on Thursday and commended the agriculture department that has in the last few years with better technology and improved infrastructure given a growth structure and support system to farmers, thereby increasing their income.
“About 80 percent of our people are in the farming sector and therefore it is important that our farmers are supported and hence many programs have been initiated by the government to this end,” he said.
Highlighting the employability aspect in the agriculture and food sectors, the Chief Minister said that around 50000 youth enter the workforce every year in the State and the government and private sectors are the two areas where they can be employed while roughly around 3000 are absorbed in the government sector, the rest have to seek employment in the private sector.
“In the private sector, we have to look at agriculture, food processing, tourism and the service sector as the key areas for employment, failing which we will not be able to provide job opportunities to our youth,” he said.
Stressing that for the private sector to grow there has to be a “right environment” in the State, Sangma said,

Tipra Motha to organise first plenary session this month
AGARTALA, JUN 1
(PTI): The Tipra Motha will hold its first-ever plenary session in the last week of June to constitute the party’s central committee and roadmap for the regional political outfit, a senior party leader said on Thursday. The Tipra Motha, floated by Pradyot Kishore Debbarma, had won the elections to the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) in 2021 and also became the main opposition party in the northeastern state in February this year by bagging 13 seats in the 60-member
Assembly.
“The party has decided to hold its first-ever two-day plenary session to constitute the central committee, the highest policy-making body. It is likely that the conference will begin on June 23”, opposition leader Animesh Debbarma told PTI.

He participated in the ‘Mission LIFE: Lifestyle for Environment’, a mass mobilisation programme at Raj Bhavan here. Rajiv Singh
IMPHAL, JUN 1 (PTI):
Senior IPS officer Rajiv Singh, belonging to the neighbouring Tripura cadre, was on Thursday appointed as the new director general of police of Manipur for a period of three years “as a special case in public interest”, an official order said.
Singh, a 1993 batch IPS officer serving as the inspector general of operations at the CRPF headquarters in Delhi, replaces P Doungel, a 1987 batch IPS officer from Manipur, for whom a post of Officer on Special Duty (Home) has been created. He is due for retirement at the end of
the month.
According to an official order, the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet cleared inter-cadre deputation of Singh from Tripura cadre to Manipur cadre “for a period of three years from the date of joining, in relaxation of the policy as a special case in public interest”.
Personnel and Administrative Reforms Department Special Secretary N Geoffrey said, in the order, that Singh will be the new DGP of Manipur and Head of the Police Force immediately upon joining the state government. Manipur, which has been hit by ethnic conflict for nearly a month, witnessed a sudden spurt in clashes and firing between militants and security forces on Sunday, after a relative lull for over a fortnight. The death toll from clashes since ethnic violence began on May 3 has gone up to 80, officials said.
Cong welcomes Shah’s measures for Mnp but questions delay in announcement
NEW DELHI, JUN 1
(PTI): The Congress welcomed the measures announced by Home Minister Amit Shah on Thursday to bring back normalcy in Manipur but asked why he did not do this earlier and allowed the state to burn for a month.
In Imphal, Shah said a judicial committee headed by a retired high court chief justice will soon be announced to inquire into the violent clashes that has claimed over 80 lives. He also announced that a peace committee under Governor Anusuiya Uikey having representatives of all parties, Kuki
and Meitei communities and social organisations will be set up. A CBI probe to look into FIRs alleging five criminal conspiracies and one general conspiracy behind the violence in Manipur was also announced. Congress general secretary, communications, Jairam Ramesh said Shah’s series of announcements on measures related to bringing Manipur back to normalcy is welcome.
“Why couldn’t he have done this weeks ago? Why did the Modi government let Manipur burn for a month? Are only Manipuri votes valuable
and Manipuri lives dispensable,” he asked on Twitter.
“The RSS’ agenda, the BJP state government’s diabolical acts and the Union government’s inaction is the reason why Manipur is bitterly divided today. And what has happened in Manipur has implications for the entire Northeast,” the Congress leader also said. The party has claimed that the BJP’s “divisive politics” was responsible for the crisis in Manipur and has questioned why Prime Minister Narendra Modi has not made an appeal for peace to the people of the northeastern state.

PM Modi holds talks with Nepalese counterpart
NEW DELHI, JUN 1 (PTI): Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Nepalese counterpart Pushpakamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ on Thursday vowed to resolve the vexed boundary dispute under the spirit of friendship even as the two sides signed several major pacts including one on increasing New Delhi’s import of power from the neighbouring country to 10,000 mega watt in the next 10 years.
In the wide-ranging talks between Modi and Prachanda, the Indian side agreed to the first trilateral power trade from Nepal to Bangladesh through India for up to 40 mega watt of power, a move that is seen as a significant step towards ensuring greater regional cooperation.
Modi also said India will continue to strive to take the relationship with Nepal to Himalayan heights.
In total, India and Nepal signed seven pacts which included a revised treaty of transit that was described by Foreign Secretary Vinay Kwatra as “once in a generation kind of an agreement” as it would provide Nepal access to inland waterways of India for the first time
and expected to contribute very significantly to expansion of trade and investment linkages.
The two sides also firmed up several new initiatives to expand cooperation in areas of hydro-electric power, petroleum infrastructure, railway connectivity, cross-border payment systems and trade and investment as part of a futuristic approach to expand the overall trajectory of bilateral ties.
In his media statement, Modi said he and Prachanda took many important decisions to make the partnership between the two countries a “super hit” in the future.
“We will continue to strive to take our relation-

In his comments, the Nepalese prime minister said he and Modi discussed the boundary matter. “I urge prime minister Modi-ji to resolve the boundary matter through the established bilateral diplomatic mechanism,” he said.
Ties between the two countries came under severe strain after Kathmandu published a new political map in 2020 that showed three Indian territories -- Limpiyadhura, Kalapani and Lipulekh -- as part of Nepal.

Centre to recruit various officers from private sector
NEW DELHI, JUN 1
(PTI): The Centre has decided to recruit 17 senior officers -- three joint secretaries and 14 directors and deputy secretaries -- through the lateral entry mode, according to an official statement issued on Thursday.
The Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT) has asked the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) to induct these senior officers from the private sector in six departments. This is the fourth such recruitment drive proposed to be undertaken by the Narendra Modi government, which had in 2018 initiated lateral entry -- referred to as the appointment of private sector specialists in government departments -- to bring
fresh talent and augment the availability of manpower.
Usually, the posts of joint secretaries, directors and deputy secretaries are held by officers of all-India and Group A services, among others.
The latest recruitment will be in the Department of Health and Family Welfare under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, the Ministry of Power, the Department of Rural Development under the Ministry of Rural Development, the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, the Department of Financial Services under the Ministry of Finance and the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation, according to the statement issued by the personnel ministry.

Asked at a media briefing about the boundary dispute, Foreign Secretary Kwatra referred to the comments by the two prime ministers and said they not only speak of the intent of the two leaders and the two systems, they also speak about the specifics through which they intend this to be carried forward.
To a question on whether the China factor figured in the talks, Kwatra said the discussions also covered wider developments and challenges and how the two countries should cooperate to mitigate them.
In his remarks, Modi also referred to his priority in strengthening ties with Nepal after he took charge as the prime minister nine years ago. “I remember, nine years ago, in 2014, within three months of taking office, I made my first visit to Nepal. At that time I had given a ‘hit’ formula for India-Nepal relations -- Highways, I-ways, and Trans-ways,” Modi said.
Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar has already announced that the Congress won’t implement the NEP in the state. Instead, the government would formulate a new education policy, he said.
Shivakumar had even dubbed NEP as the Nagpur Education Policy referring to the RSS headquarters in Nagpur city.
Shivakumar stated on Thursday, “There should have been elaborate discussion on the NEP. I am an education expert by choice. I run education institutions and
Chief Minister Siddaramaiah had demanded reversal of NEP and charged that the objective of NEP is to teach communal things to students. He argued that the NEP violates the rights of the state.
Sources explain that the Congress government aims to remove all new additions to the syllabus of the student community. The new policy will reflect the priorities and preferences of the land. Shivakumar had also stated that the matter would be discussed comprehensively.
Sukhbir Badal advises Rahul to avoid speaking on religious subjects
CHANDIGARH, JUN 1 (IANS): Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) president Sukhbir Badal on Thursday advised Congress leader Rahul Gandhi to avoid speaking on religious subjects of which he has neither the knowledge nor understanding.
“He clearly doesn’t know that the vision of Shri Guru Nanak Dev ji transcends geographical boundaries and is not only global but also cosmic in its reach,” Badal said in

Responding to Rahul Gandhi’s assertions in San Francisco, BJP leader Manjinder Singh Sirsa asked him: “How much should we keep forgiving in the name of your stupidity? Where did you read that Guru Nanak went to Thailand? Is it too much to expect that you should talk like a sensible intelligent person when it concerns religion?”

Sukhbir Badal
Wrestling maniac
Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh,BJp Mp is still thumbing his nose at the law despite having been belatedly booked after Supreme Court intervention under Section 10 of pOCSO Act which is cognizable and non-bailable. The delhi police has lodged two separate First Information Reports (FIRs), including one under Section 10 of the protection of Children from Sexual Offences (pOCSO) Act 2012, against Brij Bhushan, who has denied all charges. Section 10 of the Act talks about aggravated sexual assault. The pOCSO Act was introduced in 2012 to protect children from sexual assault, sexual harassment and pornography. The law is gender-neutral, and regards the “best interest and well-being of the child” as a matter of paramount importance at every stage, “to ensure the healthy physical, emotional, intellectual and social development of the child”. despite national wrestling champions still fighting for justice and demanding the immediate arrest of the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, who has been accused of sexual harassment by seven women wrestlers, including a minor, he remains insulated from the law. The Indian Olympians have been protesting for over a month at delhi’s Jantar Mantar. Instead, when Olympians Sakshi Malik, Vinesh phogat, Bajrang punia and several protesting wrestlers tried to march to the new parliament building when the building was being inaugurated by the prime minister, they were arrested and booked by the police. Offences that fall under Section 10 of the pOCSO Act are cognizable and non-bailable. Cognizable offences are those in which a police officer can make an arrest without a warrant from a court. These include offences which are considered more serious in nature, such as murder, rape, dowry death, and kidnapping. If an offence is non-bailable, bail is granted to the accused at the discretion of the court, and not as a matter of right. The “shield of invincibility” Brij Bhushan wears comes from the influence he enjoys in half a dozen Lok Sabha constituencies, while Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh’s strong links with the saints and his role in the Ayodhya temple movement make him stronger than many other Mps in the BJp.the accused is going around and saying that the wrestlers are lying, they should return their medals. He is organising rallies. How does it not amount to intimidation of witnesses?”.despite the seriousness of the FIRS, delhi police claimed that it did not have sufficient evidence to arrest WFI chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh. The police said it will file a report regarding the entire issue in the court within 15 days. The way the law is being twisted in this case only raises serious questions about how those in power think that they can commit crimes and escape because many like them are walking free. The unfortunate who are not in power and who are at the opposite side of the political divide are harassed and jailed on trumped up charges as the law goes on overdrive. It is unlikely that Bhushan will ever see the four walls of prison anytime as his services will be needed for the 2024 Lok Sabha election.

The Staggering Question
He said to me, “Son of man, can these bones live?” — Ezekiel 37:3 Can a sinner be turned into a saint? Can a twisted life be made right? There is only one appropriate answer— “O Lord God, You know” (Ezekiel 37:3). Never forge ahead with your religious common sense and say, “Oh, yes, with just a little more Bible reading, devotional time, and prayer, I see how it can be done.”
It is much easier to do something than to trust in God; we see the activity and mistake panic for inspiration. That is why we see so few fellow workers with God, yet so many people working for God. We would much rather work for God than believe in Him. Do I really believe that God will do in me what I cannot do? The degree of hopelessness I have for others comes from never realizing that God has done anything for me. Is my own personal experience such a wonderful realization of God’s power and might that I can never have a sense of hopelessness for anyone else I see? Has any spiritual work been accomplished in me at all? The degree of panic activity in my life is equal to the degree of my lack of personal spiritual experience.
“Behold, O My people, I will open your graves…” (Ezekiel 37:12). When God wants to show you what human nature is like separated from Himself, He shows it to you in yourself. If the Spirit of God has ever given you a vision of what you are apart from the grace of God (and He will only do this when His Spirit is at work in you), then you know that in reality there is no criminal half as bad as you yourself could be without His grace. My “grave” has been opened by God and “I know that in me (that is, in my flesh) nothing good dwells” (Romans 7:18). God’s Spirit continually reveals to His children what human nature is like apart from His grace.

Embracing the power of the Question Mark -’?’
Challenging Established Institutions for a Better society
In a world driven by established institutions such as the governments, religions, laws, traditions and cultures, it is imperative that we exercise our right to question and challenge their authority. The humble question mark “?”, symbolizing curiosity and skepticism, has the potential to transform our lives and society at large. By daring to ask probing questions, we open up avenues for critical thinking, innovation, and progress.
Why it matters?
1. Breaking the Status Quo: Questioning established institutions is an act of rebellion against the status quo. It serves as a catalyst for change and ensures that those in power are held accountable for their actions. Whether it is political corruption, religious
dogma, or cultural biases, the question mark provides a means to challenge the existing norms and seek a better future. By questioning the motives, practices, and decisions of these institutions, we create space for constructive dialogue and the possibility of transformation.
2. Stimulating Critical Thinking: Questioning established institutions stimulates critical thinking, which is crucial for personal growth and societal advancement. When we unquestioningly accept the status quo, we limit our potential for intellectual development and risk becoming complacent. However, by raising thought-provoking questions, we engage in a process of reflection and analysis. This intellectual exercise allows us to see beyond the surface and uncover the underlying truths,
fallacies, and opportunities for improvement within our institutions.
3. Encouraging Innovation: The power of questioning goes beyond critiquing the flaws of established institutions. It also unlocks the potential for innovation and progress. By challenging existing systems, we create room for fresh perspectives, ideas, and solutions. Innovations in science, technology, governance, and social systems often emerge from questioning the prevailing norms. By embracing the question mark, we foster an environment where creativity thrives and society can evolve to meet the changing needs and aspirations of its members.
4. Ensuring Accountability: Questioning established institutions acts as a check and balance mechanism to ensure accountability. No institu-
tion should be immune to scrutiny, as absolute power can corrupt even the most well-intentioned. By challenging the decisions and actions of those in authority, we demand transparency, integrity, and fairness. This scrutiny prevents abuses of power, encourages ethical behavior, and fosters trust between institutions and the people they serve.
Before we start to question any established institutions, there are certain pre-requisites we need to take care of such as:
1. Cultivate Curiosity: Foster a mindset of curiosity and a thirst for knowledge. Embrace a genuine desire to understand the inner workings of the institutions that shape our lives.
2. Educating ourselves: We need to equip ourselves with knowledge and information. Research,
read, and stay informed about the history, ideologies, and practices of the institutions we question.
3. Formulate Clear and Concise Questions: Craft questions that are specific, well-reasoned, and supported by evidence. We need to articulate our concerns and expectations clearly to engage in constructive dialogue.
4. Seek Diverse Perspectives: Engage in conversations with a wide range of individuals who hold differing viewpoints. This will enrich our understanding and challenge our own biases.
5. Respectful Engagement: Approach questioning with respect and openmindedness. Listen actively, consider counterarguments, and be receptive to alternative viewpoints.
6. Advocate for Change: We need to trans-
form our questions into action. Utilize our findings and insights to advocate for positive change within established institutions or, when necessary, work toward creating alternative systems that better align with our values and aspirations. The question mark “?” is a potent symbol that encourages us to challenge the status quo, foster critical thinking, stimulate innovation, and demand accountability. By concertizing our questions, we unlock the potential for personal growth and social progress. Let us embrace the power of the question mark to build a better future, where established institutions serve the collective well-being of society while being subject to constant scrutiny and improvement.
Uncovering the values of a morality Nagas are all equal
Modern problems are not only complex but interacting: the sort of family structure we have (or ought to have) is in part a function of the sort of economic structure we have (or ought to have), and vice versa. And education, government, and other aspects of our collective life also have an impact on families. Under such circumstances, one might well doubt the capacity of human beings to fix for all time moral requirements concerning marriage, or to discover that God has done so. But one might also conclude that, without infallibly taught moral norms, moral judgment would be impossible. And the same argument will apply to exception less norms.
A line of thought that has had much influence on the maxim of Christian ethics that has become part of our common moral consciousness is “Judge not, lest you be judged”. This does not mean that we should cease to have moral standards, nor that we should not apply them to one another’s conducts. Nor does it mean that, in cases of dispute, the more permissive interpretation of a rule is always to be favored. But it does bar any inference that the more rigor-
ous position is for that reason alone the more virtuous one, as well as positions that exclude or minimize the possibility of good faith moral error.
The most important implication of the maxim against judging is that it requires a distinction between a person’s deepest intentions and dispositions -- which are known to God alone ( that’s where I am drawing the line) -- and the behavioral and consequential features of his actions, which for social purposes may (and indeed must) be subjected to scrutiny. And self-examination has an important social dimension.
Hence an approach to moral issues that neglects the behavioral and consequential features of our actions, and focuses entirely on an agent’s orientation of reason and will, either is socially useless or breaches the precept against judging others.
The fact of the matter is that human beings are diverse and complex; so also our philosophy, understanding, perspective and the way we view the world from a different angle and even more so our literature which constantly inform us. Life was not simple in ancient and medieval times, but our awareness
of its complexity is in some ways a modern phenomenon -- though one recognized by many writers before the coming of the modern age. For those who are incompetently instructed may rebel against the requirements of morality if too many demands are placed upon them, and they may also regard with contempt a morality that is presented as pliant to their every felt need. In such circumstances the most important distinction is that between justification and excuse -- a distinction habitually neglected by those who would go easy on others. But some excuses are agent-relative -- inexperience for example -- and others, such as duress, involve mitigating circumstances that are sometimes almost as good as justifications. What is crucial for present purposes is the different ways people react to change. Some embrace it with enthusiasm, and endeavor to drive others, sometimes brutally, “kicking and screaming into the Twentieth Century.” Others seek a refuge from the modern world, secured among other things by stringent moral rules. Still others attempt a more discriminating response.

Nagas today owe an unpayable debt to God and to the pioneers of the Naga movement for declaring the historical truth to the world in clear and unambiguous terms that ‘Nagas are a distinct Nation’. Unfortunately, due to the lack of school-educated Nagas in the formative years, the Naga story has not gained the recognition that it rightfully deserved in academic circles. The relative absence of accounts of Naga history by Nagas has also meant that the Nagas were unfairly labeled as backward. However, though Nagas may be found lacking in technological and academic advancement, no rightthinking Naga should ever concede that Nagas are backward.
The moral values and norms, social customs and practices, political organisation, and customary laws of the Nagas are on par, if not more highly developed, with the socalled civilized cultures. In fact, the acute observer will identify many similarities between the traditional Naga way of life and the moral codes of the Old Testament in the Bible. Perhaps, that was one of the major reasons why Christianity found fertile soil among the Nagas. Due gratitude must be accorded to the American Baptist Missionaries who brought the good news of Jesus Christ and also taught the Nagas how to read and write; the twin blessings which opened the world to the Nagas and introduced the
Nagas to the world. The political foundation of the Nagas’ claim to a separate and distinct nation rested on the uncompromising declaration that Nagas are not inferior to any people or culture. Nagas today have come to a juncture where it needs to be boldly and courageously stated that all Nagas are equal. The existence of the category of ‘backward’ within the Naga society is not a sign of progress and prosperity. Rather, it is the most evident sign that Nagas have failed to maintain the cherished equality within themselves. Nagas are not backward peoples and therefore there should be no backward tribes among the Nagas. Doubtless, disparities in economic development within Naga society need to be addressed and much wisdom and discernment are called for. But Nagas should never let this distinction between ‘backward’ and ‘advanced’ become a permanent blot in the egalitarian ethos that Nagas have so proudly claimed for generations.
Therefore, let no one tear into the fabric of this Naga equality through the claims of being ‘backward’ to secure momentary benefits from the government. Now, more than ever, Nagas must unite to uphold the historical truth that “Nagas are a distinct nation”. May God guide us.

China warns of AI risks, calls for national security measures
China’s ruling Communist Party has warned of the risks posed by advances in artificial intelligence while calling for heightened national security measures.
The statement issued after a meeting Tuesday chaired by party leader and President Xi Jinping underscores the tension between the government’s determination to seize global leadership in cutting-edge technology and concerns about the possible social and political harms of such technologies. It also followed a warning by scientists and tech industry leaders in the US, including high-level executives at Microsoft and Google, about the perils that artificial intelligence poses to humankind. The meeting in Beijing discussed the need for “dedicated efforts to safeguard political security and improve the security governance of internet data and artificial intelligence,” the official Xinhua News Agency said.
“It was stressed at the meeting that the complexity and severity of national security problems faced by our country have increased dramatically. The national security front must build up strategic self-confidence, have enough confidence to secure victory, and be keenly aware of its own strengths and advantages,” Xinhua said. “We must be prepared for worst-case and extreme scenarios, and be
ready to withstand the major test of high winds, choppy waters and even dangerous storms,” it said. Xi, who is China’s head of state, commander of the military and chair of the party’s National Security Commission, called at the meeting for “staying keenly aware of the complicated and challenging circumstances facing national security.”
China needs a “new pattern of development with a new security architecture,” Xinhua reported Xi as saying. China already dedicates vast resources to suppressing any perceived political threats to the party’s dominance, with spending on the police and security personnel exceeding that devoted to the military.
While it relentlessly censors in-person protests and online criticism, citizens have continued to express dissatisfaction with policies, most recently the draconian lockdown measures enacted to combat the spread of COVID-19. China has been cracking down on its tech sector in an effort to reassert party control, but like other countries it is scrambling to find ways to regulate fastdeveloping AI technology.
The most recent party meeting reinforced the need to “assess the potential risks, take precautions, safeguard the people’s interests and national security, and ensure the safety, reliability and ability to control AI,” the official newspaper Beijing Youth Daily reported
Tuesday. Worries about artificial intelligence systems outsmarting humans and slipping out of control have intensified with the rise of a new generation of highly capable AI chatbots such as ChatGPT. Sam Altman, CEO of ChatGPT-maker OpenAI, and Geoffrey Hinton, a computer scientist known as the godfather of artificial intelligence, were among the hundreds of leading figures who signed the statement on Tuesday that was posted on the Centre for AI Safety’s website. “Mitigating the risk of extinction from AI should be a global priority alongside other societal-scale risks such as pandemics and nuclear war,” the statement said. More than 1,000 researchers and technologists, including Elon Musk, who is currently on a visit to China, had signed a much longer letter earlier this year calling for a six-month pause on AI development.
The missive said AI poses “profound risks to society and humanity,” and some involved in the topic have proposed a United Nations treaty to regulate the technology. China warned as far back as 2018 of the need to regulate AI, but has nonetheless funded a vast expansion in the field as part of efforts to seize the high ground on cutting-edge technologies. A lack of privacy protections and strict party control over the legal system have also resulted in
near-blanket use of facial, voice and even walking-gait recognition technology to identify and detain those seen as threatening, particularly political dissenters and religious minorities, especially Muslims.
Members of the Uyghur and other mainly Muslim ethnic groups have been singled out for mass electronic monitoring and more than 1 million people have been detained in prison-like political re-education camps
that China calls deradicalisation and job training centres. AI’s risks are seen mainly in its ability to control robotic, self-governing weaponry, financial tools and computers governing power grids, health centres, transportation networks and other key infrastructure. China’s unbridled enthusiasm for new technology and willingness to tinker with imported or stolen research and to stifle inquiries into major events such
as the COVID-19 outbreak heighten concerns over its use of AI. “China’s blithe attitude toward technological risk, the government’s reckless ambition, and Beijing’s crisis mismanagement are all on a collision course with the escalating dangers of AI,” technology and national security scholars Bill Drexel and Hannah Kelley wrote in an article published this week in the journal Foreign Affairs. On fire accident in East Block, Burma Camp
Sir,
The fire accident on Easter Sunday, 2023 devastated 260 houses and rendered 900 homeless according to GBs and Chairman. One lady Gulasani Salcia of about 85 was charred to death. She is reported to be physically handicapped and as such, could not escape. Bursting Gas cylinders coupled with gusty winds further worsened the situation. Loss of properties could not be assessed. Looking for water, I saw a stinking drain filled with solid waste. Stagnant and blocked drains are all over Dimapur’s colonies. In my observation, thatched houses without plastered walls was the main driver for the fire engulfing a vast area within a short period of time. Secondly, the houses were unplanned and were built too close to each other. The roads were too narrow and there was no water source nearby. The small roads leading to East Block also made it more difficult for the fire trucks to approach. The Dimapur Municipal’s jurisdiction covers many parts of Dimapur. It is the duty of the Municipal to ensure all the above facilities, including fire safety. In the absence of a Municipal, it is the responsibility of the Administration to ensure all measures that are expected in a City. My sympathy goes to the victims and the aggrieved families who lost their shelter and properties. I hope the Govt. of the day will do justice in compensating the loss of properties and life. It is a relief that the Chairman, GBs and Leaders living in the area quickly constituted a Relief Committee. It was a great relief that Shri. Randemo Lotha from Nagaland Disaster Management Authority was already there monitoring. I was told PHE Dept. is providing drinking water. I hope they will also help with emergency toilets. On my way out, I met SDO(C). I am comforted that surely a realistic report will reach the appropriate authorities for appropriate action.

Ordinance row: Stalin says ‘Centre is creating crisis’
CHENNAI, JUN 1 (PTI): Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin on Thursday accused the Centre of creating a crisis in the non-BJP ruled states and said that the ruling DMK would strongly oppose the Central ordinance on control over administrative services in the national capital. Also, the Central government was preventing duly elected governments from functioning independently, he claimed.
“The Centre is creating a crisis to the Aam Aadmi Party and is preventing a duly elected government from functioning independently. Despite the Supreme Court verdict in favour of the AAP government, the Centre brought the ordinance.
The DMK will strongly oppose it,” Stalin, who is president of the DMK, told reporters outside his Alwarpet residence here.
Flanked by Delhi Chief
Minister Arvind Kejriwal and Punjab CM Bhagwant Mann, Stalin described Kejriwal as his “good friend” and said the discussion between them on opposing the ordinance was fruitful.
“The Chief Ministers in the non-BJP ruled states and also the political party leaders should extend their support in opposing the ordinance,” Stalin urged. This sort of healthy discussion among the opposition parties should continue to protect the democracy in

State assemblies met for average 21 days in 2022: Report
NEW DELHI, JUN 1
(PTI): State assemblies across the country met for an average of 21 days in 2022 and the number of sittings of the state legislatures has been steadily declining since 2016, according to a report compiled by think-tank PRS Legislative Research.
The report said the 28 state assemblies met for 21 days on an average in 2022.
Karnataka met for the highest number of 45 days, followed by West Bengal (42 days) and Kerala (41 days).
In most states, the legislature meets for two or three sessions in a year -- a longer budget session held between January and March, followed by brief monsoon and winter sessions. Twelve
states, including five in the northeast, met for only two sessions in 2022.
Around 61 per cent of the sittings were held during the budget session. The Tamil Nadu Assembly held more than 90 per cent of its sittings in the budget session. Gujarat and Rajasthan held more than 80 per cent of their sittings in the budget session.
The average duration of a sitting across 20 states was five hours. On an average, a sitting in Maharashtra lasted eight hours, while in Sikkim, it lasted two hours.
Between 2016 and 2022, 24 state assemblies met for an average of 25 days. Kerala had the highest average number of 48 sitting days a year, followed by Odi-
sha (41 days) and Karnataka (35 days).
The number of average sitting days has declined steadily from 2016 to 2022, with a dip in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
In 2016, the assemblies of 24 states held sittings for an average of 31 days, in 2017, it was 30 days, in 2018, 27 days and in 2019, it was 25 days.
In 2020, the number of sittings was down to 17 days due to the pandemic.
In 2021, it was 22 days. The National Commission to Review the Working of the Constitution (NCRWC) had recommended that the states set a minimum number of sitting days for their legislatures, based on the number of members.
NMC bars 38 Med Colleges including AMC, Guwahati Medical College
NEW DELHI, JUN 1
(AGENCIES): The National Medical Commission—the country’s apex regulatory body for medical education—has barred 38 medical colleges from admitting new MBBS students this year after it found them defaulting on several mandatory administrative standards, including maintaining faculty attendance records, reports the ThePrint Thursday.
A senior official from the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare told The Print on the condition of anonymity that in addition to these, 105 other colleges have also been identified for action, although notices have yet to be issued to them.
“These colleges (the 38 disbarred medical colleges) have the right to appeal within 30 days after setting their standards right,” the official said.
Sources said that the decision was taken after a detailed assessment by
NMC’s Medical Assessment and Ratings Board found several administrative lapses in these colleges, among them irregularities in maintaining attendance records and inadequate security cameras.
The all-India assessment was conducted over several weeks earlier this year.
According to data from the Union health ministry, there are a total of 654 functional medical colleges and 99,763 MBBS seats in the country in the 2022-2023 academic year.
Among those colleges that have been disbarred by NMC are some recognised government institutions such as the Stanley Medical College in Chennai, the Indira Gandhi Medical College & Research Institute, Puducherry, the Assam Medical College, Dibrugarh, and the Gauhati Medical College and Hospital.
Government sources also said that at least seven
“I am facing similar problems in my state. I had to move the Supreme Court to call a Budget session because the Governor wasn’t allowing it,” Mann said and added, “we seek the DMK’s support to save democracy.”
The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) supremo has been reaching out to leaders of non-BJP parties to garner support against the ordinance so that the Centre’s bid to replace it through a bill is defeated when it is brought in Parliament.
medical colleges have already petitioned the Union health ministry against NMC’s decision.
But procedure demands that any decision taken by NMC must first be appealed to the council, Dr Rajive Sood, a member of the body, told ThePrint.

1 (PTI): President Droupadi Murmu on Thursday asserted that Nepal is a priority for India and emphasized the country’s commitment to enhancing the development partnership with the neighbouring nation, including prompt completion of vital projects.
Welcoming the Prime Minister of Nepal Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ at the Rashtrapati Bhavan here, Murmu also said India-Nepal bilateral cooperation has gone from strength to strength in recent years.
“Trade between the two countries was maintained even during the difficult times of the COVID-19 pandemic,” she highlighted.
Prime Minister Prachanda also called on Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar at his official residence here.
Sharing pictures of the meeting on Twitter, the Vice President’s Secretariat said, “Age-old cultural ties
between India and Nepal continue to be the bedrock of our relationship as we make good progress in other areas of our engagement.”
During her meeting with the prime minister of the neighbouring country, Murmu said the open border between India and Nepal has encouraged tourism from both sides. She also emphasised the need to revive the spiritual tourist circuit to promote people-to-people contact
and tourism. Murmu said sister-city agreements and improvement in financial connectivity can also boost tourism between the two countries, adding that Nepal is a priority for India.
The President said India looks forward to furthering its development partnership, including early completion of important projects, according to a Rashtrapati Bhavan communique.
NCERT drops various topics from Class 10 textbooks
NEW DELHI, JUN 1 (PTI): Chapters on the Periodic Table, contribution of agriculture to the national economy, challenges to democracy and sustainable management of natural resources are among those dropped from Class 10 textbooks by the NCERT.
The changes were announced by the National Council for Education Research and Training (NCERT) last year as part of a “rationalisation” exercise based on expert recommendations. The new textbooks with these deletions and changes have now hit the market. Even though the Class 10 Chemistry textbook drops the entire chapter that introduces students to the Periodic Table, it remains part of the syllabus for Class 11.
Emphasizing the importance of the topic, a text by American chemist Glenn T Seaborg cited in the Class 11 Chemistry textbook reads, “The Periodic Table is arguably the most important concept in chemistry, both in principle and in practice…. An awareness of the Periodic Table is essential to anyone who wishes to disentangle

In a note on the changes in the textbooks, the NCERT last year said, “In view of the COVID-19 pandemic, it is imperative to reduce content load on students. The National Education Policy 2020,
also emphasises reducing the content load and providing opportunities for experiential learning with creative mindset.”
“In this background, NCERT has undertaken the exercise to rationalise the textbooks across all classes. Learning Outcomes already developed by the NCERT across classes have been taken into consideration in this exercise,” it said. Among other deletions made last year in the Class 10 Science textbook were passages on “Evolution”.
Topics that have been struck off the Science textbooks include chapters on Fibre and Fabrics in Classes 6, 7 and 8. One deletion that stands out is that of the “Why do we fall ill” chapter from the Class 9 Science textbook.

“We assure you full protection of investment. We will continue reforming our investment regime. We have put in place an automated route for FDI approval. The Nepal central bank clears the repatriation within 7 days. The investment board of Nepal provides one-stop service for the large scale investments,” he said. He also said that modern infrastructure at border areas offers opportunities for cross border investments and industrialisation.
Vast investment opportunities are there in the hydro power sector also.

Judicial panel to probe Manipur violence: Shah
He assured that the probe would be impartial and fair.
Shah said, during his stay in the State, he had met and held talks with several CSOs – 22 Meitei organisations and 25 Kuki organisations.
He also met leaders of different political parties, intellectuals, educationists and retired bureaucrats belonging to both the warring communities, besides visiting the relief camps.
Shah reiterated the Centre’s decision to provide compensations to the next of kin of those who had lost their lives and also those injured in the chain of violence that erupted on May 3. He said an ex-gratia of Rs 10 lakh each would be given to the kin of the deceased – Rs 5 lakh by the Central government and Rs 5 lakh
by the Manipur government. The amount would be transferred through Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT).
He said the Centre would also send medical teams to the violence-hit areas of Churachandpur, Kangpokpi and Moreh to ensure medical facilities, besides Imphal if required.
The minister further stated that education officials would reach the State and hold discussions to provide uninterrupted education facilities to students, while online education and examination would be held as per plan.
He said a rehabilitation package and special provisions would be put into place to ensure that students did not fall back on exams.
The Manipur government on Thursday removed Director General of Police,
P Doungel (1987 Manipur
cadre IPS) and appointed Rajiv Singh (1993 Tripura cadre IPS) as the new chief of the state police. Doungel was appointed as Officer on Special Duty (Home), a newly created post.
Meanwhile, amid the allegations of cadres of Kuki militants under Suspension of Operation (SoO) being involved in the violence, Shah asked the militant groups under SoO to strictly adhere to the ground rules laid down in the agreement.
He warned, “Stringent actions would be taken against those who violate the ground rules of the agreement.”
Reiterating the government’s appeal to surrender arms and ammunition snatched from the police and security forces during the violence, he asked those
Markets extend losses for 2nd
day in highly volatile trade
MUMBAI, JUN 1 (PTI):
Equity benchmark indices
Sensex and Nifty ended lower in highly volatile trade on Thursday due to selling in banking, metal and energy counters amid a mixed trend in the global markets.
Falling for the second day in a row, the 30-share BSE Sensex declined 193.70 points or 0.31% to settle at 62,428.54 even after a positive beginning. During the day, it fell 263.1 points or 0.42 %to 62,359.14.
The NSE Nifty fell 46.65 points or 0.25% to finish at 18,487.75.
“Despite challenges in the global economies, the domestic market displayed better than estimated Q4
earnings growth, along with 7.2 % GDP growth in FY23, adding buoyancy to the market during the week.
“However, today the market closed with a marginal negative bias in which banks witnessed heavy profit-booking. Investors turned cautious in anticipation of inflationary pressure in the US after raising the US debt ceiling,” said Vinod Nair, Head of Research at Geojit Financial Services. From the Sensex pack, Bharti Airtel fell 3.42 and Kotak Mahindra Bank declined 3.31%.
ICICI Bank, ITC, HDFC Bank, UltraTech Cement, HCL Technologies and Maruti were the other major laggards. Tata Motors,
Hindustan Unilever, Asian Paints, Sun Pharma, Nestle, Tata Consultancy Services, Wipro, Bajaj Finance, Axis Bank and IndusInd Bank were among the gainers. Meanwhile, S&P Global Ratings said Reliance Industries Ltd’s operating performance is likely to remain resilient over the next two years, as the firm’s growing presence in the digital and retail segments will temper softer earnings in the energy business.
who possessed weapons illegally to surrender these to police stations. “Combing operations would be conducted starting from tomorrow and stringent legal actions will be taken if weapons are found with anyone,” he warned.
Shah also mentioned that helicopter services would be started in the three districts of Kangpokpi, Tengnoupal and Churachandpur with a discount fare of Rs 2,000 per person.
He assured “To bring a permanent solution, the fencing of Indo-Myanmar border in Manipur sector will be speeded up.”
Asserting that the territorial integrity of Manipur would not be compromised, Shah appealed to the public not to believe in rumours or any unfounded information that could cause ten-
sion, disclosing that a tollfree number too had been opened to enable the public to verify any information.
He urged the CSOs to take part in convincing the masses to maintain peace and tranquillity.
On behalf of the Centre and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, he also conveyed his deepest condolences to those who had lost their near and dear ones to the recent violence.
Chief minister N Biren Singh, Union Minister of State for Home Affairs Nityanand Rai, who is camping in the State, Union home secretary Ajay Kumar Bhalla, director of Intelligence Bureau Tapan Kumar Deka, security advisor to Manipur government Kuldeep Singh and BJP national spokesperson Sambit Patra also attended the press conference.

Rahul in Stanford speaks on disqualification from LS
STANFORD (CALIFORNIA), JUN 1 (PTI): Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has said that he did not imagine his disqualification from Lok Sabha was possible when he joined politics but asserted that it has given him a “huge opportunity” to serve the people.
Gandhi, who is in the US for a three-city US tour, made the remarks on Wednesday night in response to a series of questions from Indian students at the prestigious Stanford University Campus in California.
The Wayanad (Kerala) Member of Parliament was disqualified from Lok Sabha earlier this year after he was convicted by a Surat court in a 2019 criminal defamation case over his “Modi surname” remark. In his remarks, Gandhi said that when he joined politics in 2000, he never imagined this is what he would go through. What he sees is going on now is way

outside anything that he had thought when he joined politics.
Referring to his disqualification from Lok Sabha as a Member of Parliament, Gandhi, 52, said he didn’t imagine that something like this was possible.
“But then I think it’s actually given me a huge opportunity. Probably much bigger than the opportunity I would have. That’s just the way politics works,” he said.
“I think the drama started really, about six months ago. We were strug-

gling. The entire opposition is struggling in India. Huge financial dominance. Institutional capture. We’re struggling to fight the democratic fight in our country,” he said, adding that at this point in time, he decided to go for the ‘Bharat Jodo Yatra’.
“I am very clear, our fight is ours fight,” he said.
“But there is a group of young students from India here. I want to have a relationship with them and want to talk to them. It’s my right to do it,” he said during his interaction with Indian students and academicians of Indian origin at the University here. He also emphasised in his frequent foreign trips like this, he is not seeking support from anybody. “I don’t understand why the prime minister doesn’t come here and do it,” Gandhi asked amidst applause from the audience who had packed the entire auditorium at Stanford.
Pervez Elahi, a close aide to former prime minister Imran Khan, was arrested outside his residence here on Thursday, the party said.
“Shameful how the regime doesn’t stop their fascism. The inflation has skyrocketed to 38%, and their response is arresting former CM Punjab Parvez Elahi. Absolutely ridiculous!” the party tweeted along with a video in which the 77-year-old leader was seen being dragged by security personnel from his residence, Zahoor Elahi.
The former Punjab chief minister was arrested as he was leaving his house, the Dawn newspaper reported, quoting Elahi’s spokesperson Iqbal Chaudhry.
The spokesperson alleged that authorities also “misbehaved” with women accompanying Elahi, who had been evading arrest since May 9.
On May 26, a district court in Lahore issued a
non-bailable arrest warrant for Elahi.
“The pre-arrest bail of the accused was dismissed due to non-prosecution vide order dated May 25 and he is not appearing before the court and also not joining the investigation. In view of the request of the IO, let non-bailable arrest warrants of accused Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi be issued for June 2, 2023,” the court order read. Elahi, who was a close aide to military dictator General Pervez Musharraf, was appointed as the president of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party in March this year after quitting his former party - the Pakistan Muslim LeagueQuaid (PML-Q).
Kim Yo Jung calls US ‘hypocritical’ for criticizing failed satellite launch
SEOUL, JUN 1 (AP): The powerful sister of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un on Thursday accused the United States of “gangster-like” hypocrisy for criticising her country’s failed launch of a military spy satellite and insisted a successful launch will be made soon.
HALIFAX (CANADA),
JUN 1 (AP): More than 300 firefighters from the United States and South Africa are heading to Canada in the coming days to help the country battle an unprecedented wildfire season.
Federal officials said on Thursday that at least 100 US firefighters will be arriving in Nova Scotia over the weekend to help knock down out-of-control wildfires that have forced about 21,000 people from their homes since Sunday.
Another 200 firefighters arriving from South Africa will likely end up in Alberta, though officials say the wildfire situation in the country is fluid.
In Nova Scotia, two major fires that remain out of control — one in suburban Halifax, the other in the southwestern corner of the province — have already destroyed at least 200 homes and cottages.
Still, fire officials announced on Thursday that the fire near Halifax had been 50 per cent contained, and that it had not grown on Wednesday.
The latest contingent of arriving international firefighters will be joining hundreds of their colleagues from countries including the United States, Australia and New Zealand who already were in Canada battling fires.
Officials say the number of fires so far this year is roughly on par with 10-year averages, but the amount of land devoured by those fires — approximately 27,000 square kilometers (104,000 square miles) and counting — is “unprecedented”.
Officials say firefighters are now dealing with parched conditions, rising temperatures and mounting wind speeds, which will make for a volatile environment for wildfires.

Kim Yo Jong said North Korea’s efforts to acquire space-based reconnaissance capabilities were a legitimate exercise of its sovereign right and restated the country’s rejection of UN Security Council resolutions that ban it from conducting any launch involving ballistic missile technology.
Her comments on state media came a day after the rocket carrying the satellite failed. North Korea said the rocket lost thrust after a stage separation and crashed in waters off the Korean Peninsula’s western coast.
Washington, South Korea and Japan had quickly criticised the launch. Adam Hodge, a spokesperson at the US National Security Council, said Washington strongly condemns the North Korean launch because it used banned ballistic missile technology, raised tensions and risked destabilising security in the region and beyond.
In her statement, Kim Yo Jong briefly mentioned Hodge’s comments before saying the United States “is letting loose a hackneyed gibberish prompted by its brigandish and abnormal thinking”.
“If the DPRK’s satellite launch should be particularly censured, the US and all other countries, which have already launched thousands of satellites, should be denounced. This is nothing but sophism of self-contradiction,” she said, using the initials of North Korea’s formal name, the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea.
She noted how the United States closely monitors the North through its own reconnaissance satellites and other aerial assets, calling the Americans a “group of gangsters” who would deem it as “illegal and threatening” had North Korea attempted to send a satellite into space by balloon. “The

(AP): Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy took his quest for more arms and support to a sprawling summit of some 50 European leaders in Moldova on Thursday, becoming the focal point of an event that seeks to quell regional conflicts and shore up unity in the face of Russia’s war.
The meeting of the pan-continental European Political Community, which embraces all European nations other than Russia and Belarus, gathered the heads of state and government from 47 countries but its attention was on the continent’s south and east — a region pushed to a turning point in its relationship with Moscow because of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine last year. The 27-nation EU wants to use the summit to reach out to many Eastern European countries that spent decades either within the Soviet Union or under its immediate sphere of influence, and to bolster the continent’s unified response
White House announces sanctions in Sudan
WASHINGTON, JUN 1
far-fetched logic that only the DPRK should not be allowed to do so according to the (UN Security Council’s) resolution’ which bans the use of ballistic rocket technology irrespective of its purpose, though other countries are doing so, is clearly a gangster-like and wrong one of seriously violating the DPRK’s right to use space and illegally oppressing it,” she said.
“It is certain that the DPRK’s military reconnaissance satellite will be correctly put on space orbit in the near future and start its mission,” she added.
Citing what she described as US hostility toward the North, Kim reiterated that Pyongyang has no intent to reengage in negotiations with Washington, which have stalemated since 2019 because of disagreements over crippling US-led sanctions imposed over the North’s nuclear weapons and missiles programme.
Wednesday’s launch extended a provocative run in North Korean military demonstrations, including the test-firings of around 100 missiles since the start of 2022 that underscored Kim Jong Un’s attempts to acquire dual ability to conduct nuclear strikes on both the US mainland and South Korea.
(AP): The White House announced Thursday that it will levy sanctions against people “who are perpetuating the violence” in Sudan as warring sides fail to abide by a cease-fire agreement. The United States is imposing visa restrictions on specific people in Sudan, including officials from the warring Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces and leaders from the former Omar al-Bashir regime, who are “responsible for, or complicit in, undermining Sudan’s democratic transition,” according to the State Department.
President Joe Biden on May 4 laid the groundwork for the sanctions when he issued an executive order that expanded US authorities to respond to the violence and help bring an end to the conflict. “These measures are intended to hold accountable those responsible for undermining the peace, security, and stability of Sudan,” White House national security adviser Jake Sullivan said in a statement.
The Treasury Department said in a statement that four companies are being designated. Sudan’s largest defense company, Defense Industries System; and the arms company Sudan Master Technology, which is linked to the SAF.

The choice to hold the summit in Moldova, a former Soviet republic of around 2.6 million people, is seen as a message to the Kremlin both from the EU and the pro-Western Moldovan government, which received EU candidate status in June of last year at the same time as Ukraine.
As he addressed the gathered leaders at an opening ceremony, Dutch Prime
Minister Mark Rutte noted the significance of the summit’s location, only around 20 kilometers (12 miles) from Ukraine’s border.
“Our meeting today in Moldova speaks volumes. The country borders on Ukraine and here, the Russian threat is palpable,” Rutte said. Moldova, Europe’s poorest country which is cradled by Ukraine on three sides, aspires to join the EU by the end of the decade, and has consistently signaled its support for Ukraine and taken in refugees fleeing the war.
NATO presses Turkiye to approve Sweden’s membership
OSLO, JUN 1 (AP):
NATO on Thursday ramped up pressure on its member Turkiye to drop its objections to Sweden’s membership as the military organisation seeks to deal with the issue by the time US President Joe Biden and his counterparts meet next month.
The military organisation is also looking at boosting Ukraine’s nonmember status in the alliance and preparing a framework for security commitments that it can offer once the war with Russia is over.
NATO chief Jens Stoltenberg said the alliance wants to bring Sweden into the fold by the time allied leaders meet in Lithuania next month.

lies hoped to make progress on long-term funding and the security plan for Ukraine at the same event. He said the allies continue to agree that Ukraine will become a NATO member but that in the meantime the alliance should provide it with security commitments and substantial new funding.
“Our focus today was on how we can bring Ukraine closer to NATO where it belongs,” he said.

‘That ‘70s Show’ star Danny found guilty of 2 rape counts
Actor Danny Masterson, the actor best known for his role in ‘That ‘70s Show’, was found guilty of two counts of rape in a Los Angeles retrial in which the Church of Scientology played a central role.
The jury of seven women and five men reached the verdict after deliberating for seven days spread over two weeks. They could not reach a verdict on the third count, that alleged Masterson
Guardian’.
Masterson was led from the courtroom in handcuffs.
The 47-year-old actor faces up to 30 years in prison. His wife, actor and model Bijou Phillips, wept as he was led away. Other family and friends sat stone-faced.
Prosecutors, retrying Masterson after a deadlocked jury led to a mistrial in December, said he forcibly raped three women, including a longtime girlfriend, in his Hollywood Hills home between 2001 and 2003. They told jurors he drugged the women’s drinks so he could rape them.
They said he used his prominence in the church - where all three women were also members at the time - to avoid consequences for decades.
‘The Guardian’ further states that Masterson did not testify, and his lawyers called no witnesses. The defence argued that the acts were consensual, and attempted to discredit the

women’s stories by highlighting changes and inconsistencies over time, which they said showed signs of coordination between them.
“If you decide that a witness deliberately lied about something in this case,” defence attorney Philip Cohen told jurors, “you should consider not believing anything that witness says.”
The Church of Scientology played a significant role in the first trial but arguably an even larger one in the second. Judge Charlaine F Olmedo allowed expert testimony on church policy from a former official in Scientology leadership who has become a prominent opponent.
Tensions ran high in the courtroom between current and former Scientologists, and even leaked into testimony, with the accusers saying on the stand that they felt intimidated by some members in the room.
Actor Leah Remini, a former member who has become the church’s highestprofile critic, sat in on the trial at times, putting her arm around one of the accusers to comfort her during closing arguments. (IANS)
Actress Gal Gadot shared that every time she acts, she doubts herself and worries no one will like what she’s doing.
“It’s funny, I always feel like I have this imposter syndrome, because I feel so lucky and I’m so happy that I get to do what I really, really, really love. I always feel like, ‘I hope they’re gonna like it’. There’s never a moment when I’m like, ‘They’re gonna love this’,” she said in a cover interview with L’Officiel magazine, reports aceshowbiz.com.
The 38-year-old actress also shared the one piece of advice that has helped her with the psychological disorder that makes people feel a fraud.
Recalling a conversation with Hollywood director Francis Ford Coppola, 84, the actress said: “Francis said, ‘You know, something? I’m always filled with doubts. I’m always afraid they’re not going to like it. I just follow my heart and I come into it humble’.”
In an interview, the ‘Fast X’ actress spoke about working with her husband Jaron Varsano on her film ‘Heart of Stone’, which she stars in and co-
produced with her spouse. She said: “Jaron has the business mind, and who else can take care of my interests better than my life partner.”
The ‘Death on the Nile’ star - who has three children with Jaron - said that she loved getting to play the villainous Evil Queen in the upcoming ‘Snow White’ movie. She said: “It was a great shift. I can’t believe I got to play the Evil Queen, the first evil villain in the history of Disney. I get to sing and explore my theatrical, evil dark side.” (IANS)

WFI mess: IOC condemns police action
NEW DELHI, JUNE 1
(IANS): The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has condemned the alleged manhandling by Delhi Police of protesting wrestlers over the weekend by calling it “disturbing” and urged the authorities to ensure the “well-being of the athletes” throughout the investigation against Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) sidelined chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh.
Close on the heels of a similar statement by United World Wrestling, the sport’s world governing body, the IOC also urged the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) to take all necessary action to protect the protesting wrestlers.
Since April 23, prominent Indian wrestlers led by Olympians Bajrang Punia, Sakshi Malik, and Vinesh Phogat have been staging a protest at the Jantar Mantar demanding the arrest of Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh over sexual harassment of female athletes, including a minor.
“The treatment of the Indian wrestling athletes over the weekend was very disturbing. The IOC insists that the allegations by the wrestlers are followed up
by an unbiased, criminal investigation in line with local law.
“We understand that a first step towards such a criminal investigation has been made, but more steps have to follow before concrete actions become visible.
We urge that the safety and wellbeing of these athletes are duly considered throughout this process and that this investigation will be speedily concluded,” IOC said in a statement given to some media houses.
The IOC also confirmed its close commu -

nication with the United World Wrestling (UWW), the global governing body for the sport, regarding the matter.
“From the very beginning of the allegations, the IOC has been in close contact with United World Wrestling (UWW), which has already taken measures.
“The IOC supports UWW as the competent sporting authority to address this issue as it pertains to the governance of the sport of wrestling in India. We have been informed by UWW that the President of the Wrestling
Federation of India (WFI) is currently not in charge.
“The IOC will continue to support UWW in all their efforts and in the framework of the IOC Guidelines for International Federations and NOCs for safeguarding athletes from harassment and abuse in sport.
“The IOC also urges the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) to take all necessary actions to protect the athletes and to make sure that the elections of WFI are happening as planned and in line with the regulations of UWW as an International Federa-
tion,” the statement further read.
Last weekend, the protesting wrestlers were detained by the Delhi Police during their march towards the new Parliament building.
As the protesters tried to breach the security cordon, a fierce tussle broke out -- the wrestlers and cops pushed, shoved and grappled with one another.
The following day, the wrestlers threatened to discard their medals into the river Ganga in Haridwar and go on an indefinite hunger strike at the India Gate.
After the incident, UWW condemned the manhandling of the wrestlers on Tuesday in a strong statement and also threatened of suspending the Wrestling Federation of India if the election process is not completed within the 45 days deadline.
The IOA appointed a two-member Ad-hoc Committee of Suma Shirur and Bhupender Singh Bajwa to oversee the Wrestling Federation of India’s office. A retired High Court Judge will also be appointed to ensure impartial and transparent voting.
Khaps extend full support to wrestlers, mull approaching President Murmu
MUZAFFARNAGAR (UP), JUNE 1 (IANS):
The Mahapanchayat of Khaps that met in Muzaffarnagar on Thursday has decided to meet President Droupadi Murmu if need be and seek justice for the protesting wrestlers demanding the arrest of Wrestling Federation of India chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh on charges of sexual harassment.
Bharatiya Kisan Union (BKU) spokesman Rakesh Tikait said the final decision on the issue of wrestlers’ protest will be taken at a meeting in Haryana on Friday.
The Mahapanchayat held at Sauram village extended full support to the protesting wrestlers and demanded the arrest of WFI chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh.
Meanwhile, farmer leader Mangeram Tyagi alleged that the wrestlers’ protest is being given a casteist colour.
“Did anyone ask them (the protesting wrestlers) about their caste when they won medals for the country,” he asked. BKU chief Naresh
Tikait, who had persuaded the wrestlers not to immerse their medals into River Ganga on Tuesday, made it clear that they will leave no stone unturned.
“We will go to the President of India if need be. We are with the wrestlers and they don’t have to worry. I told them not to immerse their medals in Ganga, rather put them up for auction. The entire world will come forward and ask you to stop the auction,” he added.
“You should understand what the Central government is doing. They broke Lalu Prasad’s family in Bihar. See what they did with Mulayam Singh
Yadav’s family. The same thing is happening in Rajasthan,” Naresh Tikait said.
The wrestlers have been on a warpath since January, demanding action against WFI chief Singh, whom they accused of sexually harassing seven athletes.
Singh, who is also a BJP MP, has asserted that would accept any punishment if the allegations against him are proven.
“If a single allegation against me is proven, I will hang myself. If you (wrestlers) have any evidence, present it to the court, and I am ready to accept any punishment,” he said.
Sevilla wins Europa League as Montiel clinches another penalty shot
BUDAPEST, JUNE 1
(AP): Five months after scoring the winning penalty in the World Cup final, Gonzalo Montiel converted the clinching spot kick for Sevilla in the Europa League final to beat Jose Mourinho’s Roma.
It earned Sevilla a seventh title in the competition on Wednesday.
The Argentina international sent Roma goakeeper Rui Patrício the wrong way with his retaken penalty to seal a 4-1 win in the shootout after the match finished 1-1 after extra time in Budapest, where Mourinho was aiming to maintain his record of having never lost a final in European competitions.
“I’ve won five finals and I lost this one, but I’m coming back home proud again,” Mourinho told Sky Sport Italy. “The boys gave everything.”
Gianluca Mancini and Roger Ibanez failed to convert for Roma from the spot against Sevilla goalkeeper Yassine Bounou. Montiel missed his first attempt but had another
chance after Patrício was judged to have come off his line.
Sevilla has still never lost a final it has contested in the Europa League or its precursor, the UEFA Cup — the team also won the competition in 2006, ‘07, ‘14, ‘15, ‘16 and ‘20 — and secured a place in next season’s Champions League.
At one stage close to
the relegation zone in the Spanish league and already eliminated from the Champions League, it had looked like a season to forget for Sevilla. But clearly it was not over yet.
A new coach, José Luis Mendilibar came in and things turned around quickly. “I’m happy to be here, to have won for the club, which was having
Bronze medalist Vekhonielü felicitated
KOHIMA, JUN 1 (NPN): Vekhonielü Cürhah, who won bronze in the 55 Kg Women’s Classic Style category at the recently concluded United World Wrestling (UWW), Asian Belt-Wrestling Championship held at Jizzakh in Uzbekistan, was felicitated during a programme held at Talimeren Hall, Nagaland Olympic Association (NOA), here Thursday.
She had represented the country in three styles including Women’s Classic Style, Women’s Freestyle and Women’s Qazak Kuresi all in the 55 Kg category.
She along with another Naga athlete participating as a referee at the championship, Khrievotuo Nicholas Sekhose, were part of the 10 member athletes team representing India at the event which started on May 23.
Team India comprised of All India Traditional Wrestling & Pankration Federation (AITWPF) president Omarmukhtar Tamboli, 6 athletes and 3 referees.
Special guest for the felicitation, advisor for Youth Resources & Sports, S Keoshu Yimkhiung, in
a brief remark, expressed his happiness at Cürhah’s achievement and congratulated her.
He said Nagas were gifted in sports by blood and by nature and that sports is an integral part of Naga culture from time immemorial.
He asserted that Nagas were Mongolian race by origin and that the place from where Nagas migrated was famous worldwide because of their excellence in games and sports.
He observed that sports was a culture in Nagaland, however, sportsper-
sons here do not practice enough which was one reason that was holding back people from making progress.
He stressed on the value and importance of dedication and practice which would help the athletes progress.
Lauding Nagaland Wrestling Association (NWA) for playing the role of a diligent parent in nurturing the athletes, Yimkhiung, said parents teach their children to go in the right direction and this was what was displayed through this achievement.
“Today our sister has won this medal and has brought laurels to our state. I hope she would continue to climb higher. I hope the state would be blessed through her,” Yimkhiung said.
He assured full support from the government’s side to nurture talented and willing athletes since the state was at such a point where government jobs alone was not sufficient for the youths.
The advisor pointed out that studying was important however, youths should also pay attention
to their talents and dedicate themselves so that they would be able to make a living through their talents.
He expressed optimism that there would be more success stories in the days to come.
Earlier, sharing the congratulatory message, NWA president, Dr Hiabe Zeliang said it was time to prepare “our” young boys and girls so get to a level where they would be able to compete at all levels.
The programme was chaired by general secretary, NWA, Vilekho Bio, thanksgiving prayer was offered by, Evangelist, Zion Mission Church Naga Bazar, Thüyiesayi Swüro.

a hard time when we got here,” Mendilibar said. “We have done something good that can have repercussions for the good of the club.”

Ronaldo absent with injury as Saudi soccer season ends
RIYADH, JUNE 1 (AP):
Cristiano Ronaldo’s first season in Saudi Arabia came to an end, although the star forward was absent as Al-Nassr beat Al-Fateh 3-0 to finish in second place in the league. Ronaldo, who signed for the Riyadh club in December b efore scoring 14 goals in 16 league games, picked up a muscle injury four days previously and was rested ahead of Portugal’s European Championship qualifiers against Bosnia-Herzegovina and Iceland in June. In the 38-year-old Ronaldo’s absence on Wednesday, Anderson Talisca took center stage to score twice. He also assisted Mohammed Marwan for a third.
Al-Ittihad, which had already secured the league championship in the penultimate round, celebrated a first title since 2009 with a 2-0 win against Al-Tai.
Abderazzak Hamdallah of Morocco opened the scoring with a second-half penalty that also secured the golden boot with his 21st goal of the season. Former Leeds United and Wolverhampton winger Helder Costa added the second in injury time.
career is peaking since joining Sevilla just two months ago.
As Sevilla players celebrated on the field, Mourinho kept his calm and congratulated the Spanish club on the victory.
“We lost a game but not dignity. I’ve never gone home prouder than today,” Mourinho said. “Great match, great final. Intense, vibrant.”
After receiving his runners-up medal, Mourinho took it off and gave it to a young fan.
Paulo Dybala had put Roma ahead in the 35th minute at Puskás Aréna in the Hungarian capital. Mancini sent a through ball for Dybala, who netted past Bounou with a low left-foot shot. The Argentina forward had recovered from an ankle injury in time to be declared fit for the final.
It was Dybala’s fifth goal of the Europa League, and 17th overall this season. Sevilla was only slowly getting into the match but Ivan Rakitic came close to equalizing in first-half stop-
page time with a low drive from 20 meters (yards) that bounced off the post.
Mendilibar sent on midfielder Suso and forward Erik Lamela, a former Roma player, as substitutes at the start of the second half to rejuvenate his team.
Sevilla equalized through Mancini’s owngoal 10 minutes into the second half when he was under pressure from Youssef En-Nesyri. Captain Jesús Navas set up the goal with a cross from the right. Navas, a 37-year-old veteran, was on the team that won Sevilla’s first Europa League title in 2006.
“When they scored against us, you think that it will be very difficult to score against them,” Mendilibar said. “”The equalizer came quickly in the second half and gave us the strength to continue in the fight to win the game.”
Substitute Andrea Belotti failed to beat Bounou in a one-on-one following Lorenzo Pellegrini’s free kick seven minutes from time.
