of the collaborative efforts of all 17 major Naga tribes at one venue with the aim to promote local culture and products in rest of the world. TOKYO/NEW DELHI, DEC 1 (AGENCIES): The omicron variant kept a jittery world off kilter on Wednesday as Japan further tightened travel restrictions, infections linked to the new version of the coronavirus popped up in more places and new evidence made clear the mutant strain was circulating weeks earlier than thought. Much is still unknown about the new variant, including how contagious it is and whether it can evade vaccines, and the European Union chief acknowledged that waiting for scientists to tell the world more felt like "an eternity." Meanwhile, many nations in Europe are still dealing with a surge in infections and hospitalizations

from their old foe, the delta variant. Japan continued its aggressive stance, asking international airlines to stop taking new reservations for all flights arriving in the country until the end of December. The move by the world's third-largest economy, coupled with its recent return to a ban on foreign visitors, is among the most severe anywhere, and more in line with cloistered neighbor China than with some other democracies in the region. Many countries around the world, however, have barred travelers from southern Africa, and the US is moving to toughen testing requirements for international arrivals. (Cont’d on p-8)

Main lynching accused killed in road accident DEATH OF MAIN ACCUSED PROMPTS JUBILATION, CONCERN IN ASSAM

The main accused Neeraj Das alias ‘Kola Lora’ (L) and the deceased Animesh Bhuyan (R). “The driver of the vehicle then lost control of the vehicle which rammed into a wall and was damaged,” Jain told PTI. Das was taken to the hospital, where he was declared “brought dead”. Three policemen were injured in the incident. A total 13 people, including Das, were arrested on Monday and Tuesday in connection with the lynching of All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) leader Animesh Bhuyan. Two others, including a reporter, who was accompanying Bhuyan were injured in the incident on Monday. As the news of Das’ death spread people came out to the streets in Jorhat city, which is a major educational hub of upper Assam, and burst crackers in jubilation.

Sarma wrote on Twitter, “Assam will be free of crime and criminal - come what May” and retweeted a post by Special DGP (Law and Order) G P Singh. The government headed by Sarma will complete its first year in May next year and the tweet is assumed to be a reference for bringing crime under control before it. Singh had tweeted at around 2.29 am on Wednesday “For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction - Newton’s Third Law” apparently referring to Das’ death after being hit by a police vehicle. Sarma later told reporters on the sidelines of a programme at Gorukhuti in Darrang district, “To save Assam from crime and criminals, crime has to be checked. Assam Police is committed to eradicate

crime from our society.” Referring to Das’ death, he said, “Some people are saying it’s a good thing, but I am not satisfied in my heart. We have reached a point where our youths are killing each other”. AASU general secretary Sankarjyoti Baruah said, “For the first time we are happy over a person’s death. Das had many cases against him and was a terror for Jorhat. God has delivered justice. “Today, Animesh’s soul and his family have attained their peace,” he said and demanded the arrest of all those involved in the lynching and exemplary punishment against them. Leader of Opposition Debabrata Saikia apparently suspecting foul play in the death of Das said, “Whenever there is death of a person in custody, NHRC mandates enquiry. We hope that the enquiry is done impartially.” On the contention by the police that Das was being taken to provide a lead on a drugs consignment, Saikia said that he had complained to Jorhat police of business in drugs in the area ten years ago but no action was taken. Das had about 90 cases, including those relating to drug offences pending against him but no action

Modify state AIDS policy to suit time: Mnp Gov Correspondent IMPHAL, DEC 1: Manipur Governor La Ganesan stressed on the need for modification of state AIDS policy to keep up with time, while chief minister N Biren Singh announced doorstep delivery of ART medicines as the state joined the observance of World AIDS Day on Wednesday. The day, hosted by Manipur Aids Control Society, was observed under the theme “End inequalities. End Aids. End Pandemics” with the state level observance in Imphal’s 1st battalion Manipur Rifles parade ground. In his speech at the observance, Governor La Ganesan reiterated the importance of observance of the day in the state where the people have experienced the impact of the HIV epidemic for the last more than three decades. Many innocent young people have died due to AIDS related diseases in the state. A number of children have been made orphans and many young women widows due to this pandemic in the state, the Governor observed. World AIDS Day, 2021 was observed to attain access for all to HIV prevention, the state has already made the AIDS Policy of Manipur and have

State level observance of World AIDS Day in Imphal on Wednesday. the distinction to be first and only state in India to have a state AIDS policy as early as 1996. “Now, it is imperative to make modifications and improvements in the policy to suit the changing circumstances and trend of the epidemic,” he said. He then called suggestions from experts and intellectuals in this field for making the policy appropriate as per the situation. It will be of immense help in treatment, care and support and will address the critical need for protection of human rights, he added. He further said that statistics indicated the magnitude of the problem in

Manipur during the early stage in a highly alarming state in the sense that many pregnant housewives, who represent the general population were infected by HIV. However, it is gratifying to note that for the last decade infection among the mothers as well as youngsters has been significantly diminishing, he said. The Governor said that he was satisfied to learn that the HIV prevalence rate among Injecting Drug Users (IDUs), men having sex with men and female sex worker significantly decreased during the last two decades.

“Small children should get utmost care and protection in this regard,” he said. It is the responsibility of the society at large, particularly women, to have a greater involvement in the fight against HIV and AIDS to safeguard the future of Manipur, he added. The Governor said that the HIV and AIDS issue was no longer a mere health issue as it covered all aspects of life-social, economic, legal, human rights and even political. Chief minister N Biren Singh announced that from December onwards all the HIV patients will get ART medicines through home delivery.

was taken. Questioning the police action, the Congress leader said, “Perhaps the cat would have got out of the bag and hence the quick action. But of course we will have to wait for an investigation before arriving at any conclusion.” Assam Jatiya Parishad president Lurinjyoti Gogoi demanded security and quick justice for the two injured in the lynching undergoing treatment at Jorhat Medical College and Hospital. He visited them during the day and enquired about their health. The sense of jubiliation among a section of the people over Das’ death has led many to ring the bell of caution. Sushanta Talukdar, the editor of a Guwahati-based online news magazine, in a tweet apparently referring to the circumstances of Das’ death said, “Manufacturing consent for #extrajudicial killing is a part of conscious attempt to weaken the judicial system for covering up failure of the State.” Another senior editor Sangeeta Barooah Pisharoty also questioned the manner in which Das was killed and took to the micro blogging site to air her apprehensions. Maintaining that

“What @assampolice did is essentially taking over role of judiciary”, she wrote “Let’s be very clear - police is to main law and order ONLY not deliver justice” and retweeted the special DGP’s post. Kaushik Deka, another senior scribe from Assam, tweeted, “No sympathy for a mob leader, but is it the way to compensate for poor policing and slow judicial process? Could become a Frankenstein in a blood thirsty society. Everyone demanding an encounter is no less than a potential lyncher.” Reacting to Deka, the special DGP replied “Without taking away from our failures, at times, we’ve to carry the load of failure of the other partner institutions of the criminal justice system.” Bhuyan was beaten to death and two others were seriously injured by a group of people following a heated argument over an accident. The incident took place in the day when an old man fell down from a scooter in front of Bhuyan’s fourwheeler but some people claimed that the AASU leader had hit the twowheeler. He and his two friends had got down from the vehicle to help the elderly person.

AIZAWL, DEC 1 (PTI): Mizoram Chief Minister Zoramthanga has urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to appoint a new chief secretary in the state, one who has working knowledge of the Mizo language, a month after the Centre appointed Renu Sharma to the top post. The CM had a month ago raised the same issue in a letter to Union Home Minister Amit Shah. Zoramthanga, who is currently in the national capital, on Tuesday called on Prime Minister Narendra Modi and discussed a wide range of issues, including the appointment of chief secretary and rehabilitation of Myanmar refugees, an official statement said. The statement also said that the chief minister, during the meeting, requested the PM to consider his government’s request to appoint a chief secretary who has “working knowledge of the

Mizo language” for effective administration. The prime minister assured him that he will take up the matter with authorities concerned, according to the statement. Arunachal PradeshGoa-Mizoram and Union Territory (AGMUT) cadre Renu Sharma was asked by the Centre to take charge from November 1. That ver y day, the Mizoram government issued a notification asking Manipur-cadre IAS officer JC Ramthanga, who is posted as additional chief secretary to the CM, to take up the responsibilities that come with the state chief secretary’s post. Sharma, however, assumed office on November 2. Zoramthanga had on October 29 written to Shah urging him to modify the Centre’s order of appointing Sharma as the chief secretary.

in West Tripura in the 1999 Lok Sabha election where former state chief minister Sudhir Ranjan Majumder was its candidate. Rubbishing TMC’s claim of increasing popularity, he said the vote share of BJP has been increasing gradually since the party came to power in Tripura in 2018. Tripura CPI-M convener Jitendra Chaudhury too rubbished TMC’s claim on vote share and that it has become the “main opposition” against the ruling BJP. TMC leader Rajib Banerjee had claimed on November 28, the day the votes were counted and the result was announced, that the party had emerged second in the Agartala Municipal Corporation (AMC) and was the main opposition to BJP after bagging 24 per cent votes on an average across Tripura. Of the total 334 seats in 20 urban bodies, including Agartala Municipal Corporation, election was held in 222 seats as BJP had won 112 of them

PANAJI, DEC 1 (IANS): Increase in drug peddling along the MizoramMyanmar border has led to increased proliferation of narcotics, as well as a high rate of HIV infections in the north eastern state, Goa Governor P.S. Sreedharan Pillai said on Wednesday. Pillai, a former Governor of Mizoram, also said that (multiple) sexual relations were not the main cause behind the spread of HIV/AIDS as much as indiscriminate use of drugs. “I was the Governor in Mizoram, where people are good at heart and law abiding citizens, but at the same time, HIV rate is more, according to my information, at the first position in India. I had occasion to study in my own way about the HIV increasing tendency and I found that actually sex relations is not the main important root or cause behind it. Use of drugs and other things is the real villain in this peril,” Pillai said at a function in South Goa. “You see, Mizoram is very near to the old state of Burma. There is free access between Mizoram and Myanmar. And then when I started my study, I found that (you can travel)

P.S. Sreedharan Pillai

without passport or anything 16 km either side, Indian side or the Myanmar side. People can go freely. Through that process, there is a dangerous situation existing there,” he said. “Dr ug peddling is very much increasing and that is the real cause behind the increase in HIV number in Aizwal and other parts of Mizoram. So that is why I am saying, instead of treating patients or trying to ward off HIV the most important thing is awareness among the youth,” Pillai further added. The Goa Governor also said that since there is no foolproof, successful remedy for treating HIV/ AIDS, the best way to keep the infection at bay was through awareness. “Awareness is the best solution,” he also said.

Meghalaya speaker issues Congress setback continues in notices to Mukul Sagma, others M’laya, working prez quits party

SHILLONG, DEC 1 (PTI): Meghalaya Speaker Metbah Lyngdoh on Wednesday issued notices to TMC legislature party leader Mukul Sangma and nine other MLAs seeking their reply to a petition for their disqualification from the House, an official said. The speaker also directed Sangma, the former chief minister, to reply to the notice within seven days, he said. “Notices have been issued to all 10 MLAs including All India Trinamool Congress legislature party leader Mukul Sangma following a petition by Congress MLA Ampareen Lyngdoh seeking their disqualification under the Tenth Schedule of the Constitution of India,” Assembly Commissioner and Secretary Andrew Simon told PTI. Ampareen Lyngdoh, who was elected the Congress legislature party leader following the switch over of 12 party MLAs to TMC, moved the speaker for their disqualification from the House on various counts under the tenth schedule of the Constitution and Rule 6 of The Members of Meghalaya Legislative Assembly (Disqualification on ground of defection) Rules, 1988.

Mukul Sangma

Mukul Sangma had led a political coup on November 25 in which he and 11 other Congress MLAs deserted the party and merged with AITC making it the principal opposition party in the 60-member House. Ampareen Lyngdoh contended that she had lodged complaints against 10 MLAs barring AITC state president Charles Pyngrope and Shitlang Pale. Petitions against them will also be submitted within a day or two. The senior Congress leader thanked the speaker for the notices his office issued on Wednesday. She said, “It is important for us that the office of the speaker has acted promptly on my petition. The process will move forward in accordance with the law and I am confident that the I have justifiable grounds to seek their disqualification.”

Appoint chief secy who knows CPI-M, not TMC finished second in Tripura civic poll Mizo: Zoramthanga to PM AG A RTA L A , D E C 1 (PTI): Tripura Minister for Education, Ratan Lal Nath Wednesday said that though Trinamool Congress has claimed that it has secured the second position in terms of votes polled in the recent urban body election in the state, it is CPI-M which has actuually done so. CPI-M, he said, has secured 18.13 per votes in the November 25 election, while the TMC has won 16.39 per cent votes. According to the records of the state election commission BJP secured 59.01 per cent votes, followed by CPI-M and then the TMC. However, in Agartala Municipal Corporation the vote share of BJP was lesser at 57.39 per cent, followed by TMC which won 20.14 per cent votes and CPI-M 16.06 per cent. On TMC’s claim of securing around 20 per cent votes in the state in just three months of its reaching out to the state, Nath said it had secured 26.4 per cent votes

‘Drugs from Myanmar behind HIV rise in Mizoram’

uncontested. Of these 222 CPI-M had secured only three seats and TMC just one. TMC has on several occasions claimed that it will capture power in the state in the 2023 assembly poll. Besides Agartala Municipal Corporation election was held in 13 municipal councils and six nagar panchayats. According to the Commission record, the total number of valid votes were 3,97,971, of which 2,38,962 were cast in favour of BJP followed by 73,402 for CPI-M and 66,388 for AITMC. Congress secured only 2.07 per cent votes, while the 1.72 per cent votes went to NOTA. Meanwhile, the Leader of Opposition Manik Sarkar (CPI-M) on Tuesday alleged that the civic poll in the state was marred by violence and miscreants sheltered by BJP had rigged it. “Civic body polls were reduced to mockery and heavily rigged by the miscreants. There was false voting. We are not accepting the

poll result, so first, second or third positions in it are not even in our calculations,” the CPI-M Politburo member said.

SHILLONG, DEC 1 (PTI): Days after 12 of its 17 MLAs including former chief minister Mukul Sangma joined the TMC, Meghalaya Congress’ working president James S Lyngdoh resigned from the primary membership of the party on Wednesday without citing any reasons. Lyngdoh’s future political plan is not known. “I am tendering my resignation from the post of working president, Meghalaya Pradesh Congress Committee, AICC member and primary member of the Indian National Congress,” James said in his resignation letter sent to AICC president Sonia Gandhi.

“I am thankful for the responsibilities and opportunities to serve the people of the state of Meghalaya,” he said. The switch over of the 12 Congress MLAs last week has made the TMC, a political newbie in Meghalaya, the principal opposition party in the assembly. Mukul Sangma who was elected the TMC’s legislature party leader has informed assembly Speaker Metbah Lyngdoh of the decision of the 12 MLAs. The Congress has sought disqualification of those legislators. The Speaker is yet to respond to the letters, an assembly official said.

SP chief takes swipe at Yogi, says those having no family can’t care for citizens

BANDA (UP), DEC 1 (PTI): Those who do not have a family will not care for the people as they cannot comprehend the pain of a common household, Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav said in a veiled dig at Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Wednesday. He also sought to know from the people whether they wanted the “Yogi government or a Yogya (capable) government”. “We are having families which is why we understand what the family members of a labourer or a farmer go through when he dies. Those raising a family understand the pain of an ordinary family. Those who do not have one will not and hence they will not care,” Yadav said at the ‘Samajwadi Vijay Rath Yatra’ here before moving to Mahoba. On BJP’s slogan of “Damdaar Sarkar” (powerful government) in Uttar Pradesh, Yadav quipped they only tell “damdaar jhooth” (big lies). “The BJP had assured jobs to shikshamitras. However, after four-and-a-half years, it has only killed the dreams of the youth who were expecting to be gainfully employed,” he alleged. On the government’s

move to provide tablets and smartphones to students, he retorted one cannot expect a chief minister, who cannot operate laptops and smartphones, to extend such facilities. “Can a Baba chief minister operate a laptop? Now it is heard that he cannot even operate a smartphone. If he could, the government would have given them to our youth by now,” the SP chief said in a veiled attack on Chief Minister, as Yogi is also a Mahant (chief priest) of revered Gorakhnath temple. Yadav alleged that the Yogi government deliberately leaked the question paper of the Teachers’ Eligibility Test (TET) as it would not be in a position to provide jobs to successful candidates. He promised that Samajwadi Party will employ those with Basic Teach-

ers Training and Bachelor of Education certification, if voted to power. Yadav said though the people of Bundelkhand extended full support to the BJP in the previous assembly and Lok Sabha polls, the region saw no development. “The gover nment’s double engine failed by the time it reached Bundelkhand,” he said. The SP chief alleged that incapacity of the government had left its citizens like “orphans” during the worst period of COVID-19 epidemic few months back. Referring to an advertisement in which a popular bridge from Kolkata was inadvertently referred to as a work in Uttar Pradesh under Yogi Adityanath, Yadav said the government was visible only in pictures and there, too, it was caught with lies. “Those who have peddled lies even in advertisements should be shown the way out,” he said. Yadav said his government will either strengthen the existing schemes or launch new ones to empower the “mothers and sisters” of the region, if voted to power. According to NITI Aayog, there are more than 32 lakh poor people in Bundelkhand.

NAGALAND POST, DIMAPUR THURSDAY, DECEMBER 2, 2021

NEW DELHI, DEC 1 (PTI): Former Congress chief Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday extended his support to those seeking jobs in the Railways and called for stopping the “injustice” towards them. In a tweet, he also claimed there are now “no jobs” in the Railways. “Earlier a job in the Railways was an honour, today there are no jobs in the Railways. Soon, the Railways will no longer be what it was earlier. Stop the injustice to the people. We want #JusticeForRailwaysStudents,” he said in a tweet in Hindi. Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra asked why the youth preparing for railway exams are not being heard. “Narendra Modi ji never makes his billionaire friends wait and had made preparations for them even before the farm laws were framed. But, what is your enmity with the youth? Why are youthspreparing for railways exams not being heard?” she said in a tweet in Hindi. Vadra also demanded that the Indian Railway Management Service notification be issued immediately as also dates for Railway Group D exams.

Question on Chinese intrusion denied: Swamy NEW DELHI, DEC 1 (PTI): Rajya Sabha member and BJP leader Subramanian Swamy on Wednesday claimed that citing national interest as a reason, the Rajya Sabha Secretariat has disallowed a question from him on whether the Chinese have crossed the LAC in Ladakh. The Rajya Sabha Secretariat said it acts on the recommendation of the “ministry concerned” when sensitive issues are involved. The issue is also being raised by the opposition ever since the clashes between the armies of India and China in June last year. Prime Minister Narendra Modi had during an all-party meeting on the issue last year stated that no one had entered India or has occupied its territory. The opposition has been attacking the prime minister and his government over the Indo-China face off at the border and has demanded action against the Chinese. “It is hilarious if not tragic for Rajya Sabha Secretariat to inform me today that my Question whether the Chinese have crossed the LAC in Ladakh, cannot be allowed, ‘ because of national interest’ !!!,” Swamy said in a tweet.

Goa: TMC terms meeting between Rahul and GFP MLAs ‘unholy alliance’

MUMBAI, DEC 1 (PTI): West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday said she had suggested to the Congress that an advisory council comprising prominent personalities from civil society be set up to give a direction to the opposition, but rued that the plan did not materialise. If all regional parties come together, it would be easy to defeat the BJP, Banerjee said while interacting with some civil society members here. “We want to say BJP hatao, desh bachao,” she said, adding that her party Trinamool Congress (TMC) will not contest the forthcoming Assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh. “I don’t want my opposition to make their own strategy. So, I am not revealing much,” she said. Banerjee is on a threeday visit to Mumbai to meet leaders of the Shiv Sena and the NCP, amid a strain in ties between the TMC and the Congress.

PANAJI, DEC 1 (PTI): Trinamool Congress (TMC) on Wednesday dubbed “unholy alliance” the meeting between two MLAs of the Goa Forward Party (GFP) with Congress leader Rahul Gandhi at his residence in Delhi. G F P M L A s Vi j ay Sardesai and Vinod Palyekar, and independent legislator Prasad Gaonkar, had met Gandhi on Tuesday and alleged that the BJP government in Goa was “corrupt” after they extended their support to Congress to defeat BJP in the next year’s assembly polls. This meeting fuelled speculation about a possible alliance between GFP and Congress. “On Tuesday, something happened which every Goan should think about. Vijai Sardesai, who heads Goa Forward Party, is in talks with Congress yet again and announced a possible alliance for the Goa elections,” TMC MP Mahua Moitra told reporters. She said BJP had come

to power in Goa after the 2017 Assembly polls even though it had won 13 seats due to this “unholy alliance”. TMC had announced to contest the maiden assembly elections in Goa. “The GFP had entered into a deal with BJP and allowed them to form a government even when people had not given them the mandate,” she added. Hitting back, Sardesai said that all those who are serious and sincere about defeating BJP should come together and fight on the common platform of Team Goa. Sardesai claimed the

TMC high-command had directed the only MLA of that party to support BJP in 2017 because of which Manipur’s first BJP government under Biren Singh came to power even though the people did not want the BJP. “What people conveniently forget is that the last time we didn’t have a prepoll alliance with Congress in Goa. We fought them in our constituencies. This time, this unity is a message from the top-most level to all those who are serious and sincere about defeating BJP to come together and fight on the common platform of Team Goa,” he said.

Akali leader Manjinder Sirsa joins BJP NEW DELHI, DEC 1 (PTI): Shiromani Akali Dal leader and Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee chief Manjinder Singh Sirsa joined the BJP here on Wednesday in the presence of Union ministers Dharmendra Pradhan and Gajendra Singh Shekhawat. Shekhawat, who is the BJP’s in-charge for the upcoming Punjab assembly polls, said Sirsa’s induction into the party will definitely be helpful for it in the state elections, expected to be held early next year. nent face of the Akali Dal in the national capital and was a strong supporter of the farmers’ protests against the three contentious farm laws. Parliament recently passed a bill to annul the three laws in what has been seen as the BJP’s effort to placate the protesting farmers, a large number of whom are Sikhs from Punjab. Pradhan said the BJP will be strengthened with Sirsa’s induction and added that he had quit his position in the DSGMC before joining the party.

Nothing in speech caused religious animosity: Sharjeel NEW DELHI, DEC 1 (PTI): Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) student Sharjeel Imam, arrested for allegedly making inflammatory speeches during the protests against CAA and NRC, told a Delhi court on Wednesday that there was nothing in his speech that caused religious animosity. Additional Sessions Judge Amitabh Rawat was hearing a case filed against Imam for the alleged speeches given by him at two universities in 2019, where he allegedly threatened to “cut off ” Assam and the rest of the Northeast from India. He was arrested under the stringent Unlawful

Suspension of 12 MPs shows frustration of govt: C’garh CM

RAIPUR, DEC 1 (PTI): Terming “wrong” the suspension of 12 opposition MPs from Rajya Sabha, Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel on Wednesday said the action against these lawmakers reflected the government’s frustration as it had to withdraw the three farm laws. Two of the 12 suspended MPs are from Chhattisgarh. Talking to reporters here at the helipad, Baghel demanded a ban on the travel of passengers coming from the countries, where a new variant of coronavirus is found, to India. “The suspension of the MPs is not right. It is wrong and the chairman (of Rajya Sabha) should reconsider it (the decision),” he said. When asked that the MPs, who have been suspended, were raising the issue of farm bills on the day of ruckus during the last Monsoon session, he said, “they (BJP-led Centre) have withdrawn the farm bills. They did it out of compulsion, not by their heart. It is the frustration (of the government) that is coming out on MPs (in the form of suspension) and others”.

Twelve opposition MPs in Rajya Sabha, including Congress MPs Chhaya Verma and Phulo Devi Netam from Chhattisgarh, were suspended on Monday for the remaining part of the winter session for their misconduct and unruly behaviour during the last session. Baghel reiterated his allegations that the Centre was not providing a sufficient quantity of jute gunny bags and refusing to accept usna (par-boiled) rice in its pool from Chhattisgarh. “We could understand that factories were shut last year due to COVID-19 lockdown and therefore the jute commissioner (which comes under the Central government) could not provide jute bags. But it is not like that this year. The state government had demanded 5 lakh bundles of jute bags but they are not giving it fully. The way they are creating trouble by not accepting usna rice in the Central pool, they are doing the same by not providing jute bags,” the CM said. Last week, Baghel had written a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi requesting him to ensure a timely supply of new jute gunny bags.

Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) and for the alleged offence of sedition under the IPC and has now sought bail as well discharge in the case. Imam has also approached the Delhi High Court seeking bail in another sedition case relating to 2019 Jamia violence. During the proceedings, counsel for Imam said, “From the impugned speech, there is nothing which per se causes any kind of religious animosity. We cannot lose sight of the context. What Sharjeel Imam says, in relation to CAA-NRC, is that in much as it affects one community directly, what kind of sup-

port is to be elicited from the majority community.” A dvo c a t e Ta nve e r Ahmed Mir added, “If a person is to say in regard to a government policy which directly affects a community ‘A’ that people of other community ‘B’ should stand with them otherwise they

are not supporting you, then we cannot say that that part of the speech promotes animosity between two communities.” He also apprised the judge about the recent Allahabad High Court order granting bail to Imam in a sedition case registered against him for a speech he made at Aligarh Muslim University in January 2020. Following this, ASJ Rawat reserved for December 7 the order on his applications seeking bail and discharge and directed Special Public Prosecutor Amit Prasad to file detailed written submissions on behalf of the State.

Kamra says his Bengaluru shows cancelled after threats

MUMBAI, DEC 1 (PTI): Comedian Kunal Kamra on Wednesday said his upcoming stand-up shows, scheduled to be held in Bengaluru, have been cancelled after the organisers received threats. The cancellation of Kamra’s shows come just days after another stand up comedian Munnawar Faruqui was denied permission to perform in the city with the police calling him a “controversial figure”. Kamra, who has criticised the BJP-led NDA government over a number of issues in the past, posted a sarcastic statement on Twitter to inform his followers and detractors about the cancellations of his shows that were to be held in the city in the coming days. “Hello Bangalore people. I’m happy to inform that my shows in Bangalore which were scheduled over the next 20 days have been cancelled. They’ve been cancelled for two reasons. “Firstly, we didn’t get special permission to seat 45 people in the venue that can seat more. Secondly,

Kunal Kamra

threats have been made to shut down the venue if I were to ever perform there. I guess this is also part of the Covid protocol & new guidelines. I suppose I am seen as a variant of the virus now,” the comedian said. Kamra said now that his shows have also been cancelled after Faruqui, it proves that the “ruling class” is at least trying to “oppress with equality”. “For those on Twitter that have been wondering how ‘A Kamra goes on to perform while a Farooqui has had to quit comedy’ we can find solace in the fact that the ruling class is at least trying to oppress with equality. “Maybe if we contin-

ue down the road of equal oppression, we would get to a point of equal liberation, in a post climate change era,” he said. He further listed five steps to get a comedian’s show cancelled. “If they use this method & a show is not cancelled I’ll give up being a stand up comedian. Step no 1 - Inform police that there could be violence. Step no 2 - Inform venue owner there could be violence. Step no 3 - Inform artist that if he/she/they will be coming there will surely be violence. Step no 4 - Remind the venue of what could happen if the artist manages to do a show despite the threats. “Step no 5 - Be ready with celebration memes that show your victory and togetherness in missing the point. You can also apply this formula to an artist that you don’t agree with, you don’t find funny or don’t like their art...” Besides Kamra and Faruqui, comedian Vir Das also faced several complaints and online trolling for his ‘Two Indias’ monologue in the US recently.

Opposition woes

rinamool Congress is poaching on Congress leaders in various states in order to spread its wings beyond West Bengal with defectors while its supreme leader and West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee is snubbing Sonia and children and blasting Rahul; exposes the biggest chink in the armour of the so-called anti-BJP opposition. These multi-pronged attacks on the Congress has been blamed on India’s famous poll strategist Prashant Kishor, who fashioned a hat-trick for Mamata in West Bengal. After helping Mamata retain power for the third consecutive term by overwhelming the BJP challenge, Prashant Kishor wanted to join the Congress and hoped to make it the fulcrum of anti-BJP unity. Prashant hoped his role in the Congress will be that of a helmsman and virtually head the party without check and balances and ultimately become a national leader. Kishor’s proposal was nonetheless shared by the Gandhis with some senior leaders of the party. Though the senior leaders favoured his induction yet, his conditions for a virtual takeover of the party were not acceptable. Kishor understands that of all parties Congress had the greatest potential and national structure to catapult him as a national leader. Among the opposition parties, Congress still commands the highest percentage of popular vote at 20 percent and it will not lose that at least for sometime. Kishor has turned to the TMC to pursue his political ambition. Chances are that the politically wily Mamata Banerjee will make full use of the poll strategist and yet one day, he may find himself in a situation which he may not be presently thinking of. Kishor has engineered the defections of veteran Congress leaders- former Goa chief minister Luizinho Faliero, AICC mahila president Sushmita Dev from Silchar, former Meghalaya chief minister Mukul Sangma and 11 Congress MLAs in Meghalaya and some key leaders in Tripura and south India. The Congress is also the best hunting ground for defectors for the BJP and now TMC. TMC supremo Mamata Banerjee’s latent national ambition has received a boost with Kishor meeting potential defectors. Congress is suffering mainly because there is no clear leader. Sonia continues to be the interim president but Rahul decides in consultation with his inner coterie such as Venugopal, Ajay Maken, Randip Surjewala etc. The coterie only serves Rahul’s interests and not the party’s. This has caused more confusion within the rank and file as recent developments in Punjab had shown. It would seem that so long as this problem continues in the Congress, it is going to cause more frustration. However, Sonia is certain that only Rahul and no one else can be her successor and so do the sycophants feel. Rahul’s leadership is frustrating other anti-BJP parties who see no sense and no hope in Congress as the main fulcrum of opposition unity. Understandably, the TMC has exploited this and propping up Mamata as the alternative and the TMC as the fulcrum for opposition unity. However, no matter how many defectors from the Congress join the TMC, it will still not make Mamata Banerjee an alternative to Modi nor TMC a favoured party beyond Bengal.

DailyDevotion The Law and the Gospel

Whoever shall keep the whole law, and yet stumble in one point, he is guilty of all. —James 2:10 The moral law does not consider our weaknesses as human beings; in fact, it does not take into account our heredity or infirmities. It simply demands that we be absolutely moral. The moral law never changes, either for the highest of society or for the weakest in the world. It is enduring and eternally the same. The moral law, ordained by God, does not make itself weak to the weak by excusing our shortcomings. It remains absolute for all time and eternity. If we are not aware of this, it is because we are less than alive. Once we do realize it, our life immediately becomes a fatal tragedy. “I was alive once without the law, but when the commandment came, sin revived and I died” (Romans 7:9). The moment we realize this, the Spirit of God convicts us of sin. Until a person gets there and sees that there is no hope, the Cross of Christ remains absurd to him. Conviction of sin always brings a fearful, confining sense of the law. It makes a person hopeless— “…sold under sin” (Romans 7:14). I, a guilty sinner, can never work to get right with God— it is impossible. There is only one way by which I can get right with God, and that is through the death of Jesus Christ. I must get rid of the underlying idea that I can ever be right with God because of my obedience. Who of us could ever obey God to absolute perfection! We only begin to realize the power of the moral law once we see that it comes with a condition and a promise. But God never coerces us. Sometimes we wish He would make us be obedient, and at other times we wish He would leave us alone. Whenever God’s will is in complete control, He removes all pressure. And when we deliberately choose to obey Him, He will reach to the remotest star and to the ends of the earth to assist us with all of His almighty power.

Post-mortem

Governor’s message on 59th Statehood Day

My dear Brothers, Sisters and Youth of Nagaland, Namaskar, I extend my warmest greetings and good wishes to all citizens of the State on the occasion of the 59th Statehood Day of Nagaland. On this day, we remember the enormous sacrifices of the pioneers of the State and pay tribute to our leaders whose tireless efforts and strategic foresight paved the way for creation of the State of Nagaland safeguarding its unique identity. The essence of this beautiful State lies in the rich ethnic diversity, a tribal society with its distinct tradition and customs, the resilience and resolute

spirit of its people that has withstood the test of time. Nagaland is blessed with vast natural resources and immense potential. The wealth of flora and fauna and resources offer tremendous scope for productivity and development particularly in agriculture and horticulture sector. Though there has been a boost in tourism to some extent, Nagaland remains an unexplored haven as a biodiversity hotspot. We have witnessed considerable progress over the years but much needs to be done to thrust the State ahead at par with the rest of the nation. We need to invest in better health infrastructure, quality education

for our children, improved connectivity, empowering and equipping the youth for optimum output amongst others and ensure equity and inclusiveness which essentially calls for good governance. Every citizen plays a pivotal role as primary agents towards development and progress of a society. I urge the tribal bodies, civil societies, church leaders and all stakeholders for more concerted efforts and respond to the call of duty with renewed vigour and commitment, and utmost sense of responsibility and accountability. I encourage our youth not to be disillusioned but to rise up to the challenges

of times. You are the backbone of the nation, our most valued human resource and catalytic agents of change and development. I hope opportunities abound more for our youth and their dreams and aspirations fulfilled as Nagaland marches towards a new era. Friends, peace is the most cherished goal for any society and Nagaland has endeavoured over the decades to this end. Peace is more than desired; it is a must for the advancement and achievement of the fullest potential of the State. When peace sustains, development follows. I am hopeful that with the collective efforts of all, we

will succeed in ushering stable peace in our State and the desire of the people for a vibrant and thriving Nagaland will no longer remain elusive but materialise before long in the not too distant future. Recent times have undoubtedly tested our resolve and the fortitude of people all over the world when the pandemic caught us totally unaware and unprepared more than a year ago. We have lost many precious lives, many have been left devastated and traumatised as the pandemic wreaked havoc. I salute the frontline workers, healthcare workers, our COVID warriors who

worked selflessly and tirelessly under immense unimaginable pressure during these unprecedented times. While there is some respite, the fight is far from over. I urge everyone to continue to remain vigilant and maintain all necessary COVID protocols. Friends, as we celebrate our Statehood Day we are at the threshold of a new dawn. As we step into it looking forward to new possibilities, let us strive to bring to fruition the vision of our founding fathers and the dreams of our people of a progressive and prosperous Nagaland. God bless Nagaland. Jai Hind. Prof. Jagdish Mukhi

Chief Minister’s speech on 59th Statehood Day My dear fellow citizens, I extend warm greetings to the people of Nagaland on the occasion of 59th Statehood Day. As we celebrate this day, our hearts are filled with gratitude to all our leaders, who played a pioneering foie in the creation of Nagaland as the sixteenth State of the Union of India. This year’s celebrations also coincide with the ongoing nation wide celebrations to commemorate 75 years of India’s independence ‘Azad’ Ka Arndt Mahotsav’ and the great achievements of its people. It is close to six decades since we got our Statehood. In this period the quality of life of our people has improved significantly. The expansion of health and education facilities, the road and power infrastructure have been especially impressive. Despite achievements in various fields, a lot remains to be done. The Government is committed to take necessary steps for all round development and to ensure that our people are provided with the best opportunities for growth and progress. While our State occupies a unique position in the Indian Union with special provisions in the Constitution, we continue to earnestly wait for a solution of the Naga Political Issue. The dialogue and negotiations between the Government of India and the Naga Political Groups have reached a stage that gives us hope of an early resolution. On our part, all the elected leaders of the state have come together to form an oppositionless government in the form of United Democratic Alliance in our effort to facilitate an early settlement of the Naga Political Issue. Through this united front, we aim to convey the voice of the people to all stakeholders involved in the negotiations. Friends, we have been collectively fighting the COVID-l9 pandemic for almost two years now. Our hearts are filled with grief over all the precious lives that have been lost. Our sympathies are with those families who have lost their near and dear ones during this trying period. At the same time, we salute all our health care workers, front line workers, the district administration and the civil societies and

I

church leaders for their ceaseless hard work. The government has constantly monitored the situation and taken timely decisions which helped us in dealing with the first and the second waves effectively. We recruited hundreds of doctors and nurses by creating additional posts. We also improved our health infrastructure in a short time span. In addition, we were able to set up oxygen generation facilities and deploy advanced equipment. Further, we also added more hospital beds including a modern, State of the Art 200-bedded acute care hospital block in CIHSR, Dimapur in record time. The facility at CIHSR Dimapur helps us be better prepared for future COVID-19 waves and other medical emergencies. Our people, however, must continue to be watchful and take all preventive steps as we open up and start the festive season. Use of mask and other precautions must continue. Vaccine hesitancy in some pockets of our districts is a matter of great concern. Some mischief makers are spreading misinformation and misguiding our people about vaccines through social media. There is no truth in the false propaganda and such rumor mongering must be stopped. In India alone, 1.22 billion doses, over 80% of the country’s population, have received a vaccine dose. Within Nagaland, people in Kohima and Dimapur have taken the vaccine with great enthusiasm and these towns are safer today. Many villages have completed 100% vaccination of their eligible population and I congratulate them for this achievement. I appeal all to come forward and take the vaccine. This will make everyone safer against any future COVID-19 outbreaks and will save precious lives. The uniqueness of our culture, and talent of our people is fully proven by the success of the Hornbill Festival-the festival of festivals. The 21st edition of this festival which is commencing today, will once again showcase our rich tradition and culture, as well as the talents of our youth in the spheres of art and music, and other fields. It will also provide domestic and international visitors a chance to see the natural beauty that

our State has to offer. This year, many of the guests from all over India, who attended the 9th edition of the International Tourism Mart organized for the first time in Nagaland, will also be participating in the Festival. I am happy to announce that in the month of January 2022, our State will be hosting the South Asian Cross-Country Championship, which will be clubbed together with the 56th National Cross-Country Championship. This will be perhaps the biggest-ever international event to be hosted by Nagaland. It will bring athletes, officials and delegates from many South Asian countries to Nagaland. I appeal to everyone, particularly the sports fraternity to come forward and support the event to make it a grand success. This event has the potential to take Nagaland to the international sporting arena. It has been our continuous endeavor to improve the quality of education in our schools and colleges. We are happy that 31 colleges out of the 66 colleges in Nagaland have been accredited by the National Assessment & Accreditation Council-NAAC, and many other colleges applications are in the pipeline. The Department of School Education has commenced implementing the National Education Policy 2020 in a phased manner. Various innovative projects are being introduced, such as making the teaching—learning process joyful and productive to both students and teachers Electricity is the driver of all development and as we are heavily deficient in power generation, we need to quickly enhance our capacity. Recently, we have received approval for Externally Aided Hydro Electric Power Projects, namely 42MW Lower Tizu and 24MW Zungki, with estimated costs of Rs. 529.78 cr and Rs. 367.21 cr respectively. In order to further augment our power generation capacity, we will be setting up solar power plants of 10-20MW during the coming year. The road network in the State is expected to see a further boost with Nagaland PWD and the NHIDCL carrying out several projects in the State. Prominent among them are 78 km. of 2-laning in Wokha-Mokochung

sector of NH-2, strengthening of existing pavement in NH-2, NI-202 & NH 702-A. The 4 lane RCC Sanuoru Bridge on the way to the New Capital Complex, the first 4 lane bridge in the State, was completed and opened to traffic on 29th No 2021. Further, 89 Roads & Bridges projects, including 22 Bridges are being constructed under PMGSY, covering a total length of 1107 Km, with a total sanctioned amount of Rs. 2284 crores. DPRs are also under preparation for the East-West corridor and North-South corridor in the state. As part of our continuous efforts to provide world class infrastructure to our people, we will be inaugurating the long awaited Capital Cultural Hall today. With a seating capacity of 1850, this will be one of the premier Cultural Halls in the country. It will provide our citizens a platform to showcase our tradition, culture and talents. We h a d w i t n e s s e d a drought-like situation in Nagaland this year and in order to deal with the delayed and erratic rains, we have implemented a Crop Contingency Plan. This will help affected farmers with input support during Rabi season. Our state is giving more focus to organic farming, not only to help farmers fetch better for their produce, but also provide healthy and nutritious food. During the three years Convergence Program of MGNREGA with North East Initiative Development Agency & Land Resources Department, a notable achievement was also made in our rural areas by successfully completing 105 Spring Shed Management projects in 97 villages. In order to strengthen our disaster management capacities, NSDMA is going to start implementing a project of Disaster Risk Reduction Roadmap for Nagaland in collaboration with UNICEF. There was an outbreak of African Swine Fever in some Veterinary & Animal Husbandry neighboring States this year. However, the Department of Veterinary & Animal Husbandry did well to prevent spread of the disease in our State by enforcing strict biosecurity measures. The Department is also working on

The Department of Soil & Water Conservation has completed the construction of “State Soil Testing Laboratory” at Kohima, and the same was inaugurated by Shri. G. Kishan Reddy, Hon’ble Union Minister for Tourism, Culture and DoNER on 24th September 2021. My dear citizens, development is a joint effort of the people and the government. We have worked to facilitate the entrepreneurial initiatives of our youth in undertaking productive activities. During the recently concluded session of the Nagaland Legislative Assembly, we passed the resolution for implementation of the SARFAESI Act in Nagaland. We have passed this Act after deliberations with all stakeholders, and after ensuring that the rights of our people guaranteed under Art. 371A continue to be fully protected. This paves the way for providing finance facilities by the banks to our promising entrepreneurs. We are also taking steps to help unlock the value of assets owned by our people by way of putting in place a legal framework to provide land title documents, which will enable them to obtain finance for their projects. Access to finance coupled with better infrastructure and connectivity as well as a peaceful atmosphere will help our entrepreneurs prosper and contribute to the economic growth of the State. On this 59th Statehood Day, let us rededicate ourselves to work unitedly to take our state forward on the road to peace, growth and development, and provide better standard of living for all our citizens. We must work harder on building and improving our human capital. And we need to further improve our administrative and governance systems, to accelerate the pace of development. I appeal the people to come forward, and join hands with the Government, in our effort to usher in a new era of peace, development and prosperity. Every father should be the strength of his daughter

got a call yesterday. The voice from the other side seemed to be familiar to me. I heard this voice almost after thirty five years. He used to be the District Information Officer in my home town in western Uttar Pradesh. He recalled how I, along with a friend, had organized an exhibition in my school on the topic of Newspapers and Technology. The information officer was invited as the chief guest of the program. According to him, it was probably the first event of its kind in the country that time. Everything rolled like a cinema

reel in my mind. After the formal conversation, he carefully gave a very good advice related to daughters. His words touched my heart. He said that “every father must say to his daughter that “Beti, I am with you all the time. I am with you in every right and wrong decision of yours. Whatever you want to do, I will always be your strength. in this house and I will be your strength in your future house too. Beti, I am always with you and will always be your strength.” In fact, as a father, if daughters are made to feel

that they are never alone, their morale will remain high and confidence bubbling. They will be able to fulfill their dreams. They will be able to do the impossible things. They will be able to choose their choicest career and work. They can opt for education of their choice. They can live the life of their choice. They will remain strong. Thus they will become the strength of the country and humanity. They will be an inspiration to other girls also. What can be a better advice for women empowerment than this. Covid has had a huge

impact on every field in the world. Jobs, relationships, lifestyle, habits, food, thinking and speaking behavior, everything has seen little or more effect. There is a famous dating website called Match, which conducts a comprehensive survey every year on romantic relationships. This time, the website’s 11th annual survey revealed that unmarried youth in USA are now looking for emotional qualities in their spouses rather than physical beauty. Post-Covid, there has been a change in the mindset of the unmarried youth. They are now looking forward

to long lasting and faithful relationships. In the relationship survey conducted on the subject of dating and long lasting relationships, people from different backgrounds in the age group of 18 to 98 years were asked different types of questions about relationships. Of these, 83% admitted that they were looking for an open-minded and accommodating partner. They also want a quality in their partner that they should be able to speak and express their thoughts, i.e. their life partner should be adept in communication skills, such

is their desire. In contrast, in the 2020 survey, 90% of respondents preferred physical attractiveness in their partner. Post-Covid pandemic, people’s focus is increasingly on good health, perhaps because of which emotional maturity and the durability of relationships is beginning to outweigh physical beauty. People are beginning to realize the value of family and lasting relationships. Corona has changed the world. Narvijay Yadav is a senior journalist and columnist. (narvijayindia@ gmail.com)

NAGALAND POST, DIMAPUR THURSDAY, DECEMBER 2, 2021

Farmers blast govt’s attempt to ‘divide’ unions Say way forward decision on Dec 4 NEW DELHI, DEC 1 (IANS): Stating that the BJP government should stop attempting to divide farmers even at this stage - two days after the three farm laws were repealed in the Parliament, the Samyukt Kisan Morcha on Wednesday on condemned the government’s statement that it does not have data about farmers’ death. “The SKM condemns the response of the government of India in the Parliament saying that it has no information about deaths in the farmers’ movement and therefore, the question of financial assistance does not arise! SKM reiterates its demand for compensation and rehabilitation of the kin of more than 689 martyrs in the ongoing agitation,” the SKM - which has spearheaded the farmers’ agitation for over a year - said in

a statement. It also criticized Prime Minister Narendra Modi for not re-initiating formal dialogue and not responding formally to the letter sent by the SKM reminding the government about the pending demands. “Farm unions stand united in their demands to the Government and SKM is awaiting formal communication with all required details from the Government,” it said. The SKM statement

came in wake of the fact that there were informal attempts to reach out to the farmers on Tuesday by the government asking for five names to be included in a Committee purportedly for discussing farm related issues, including the Minimum Support Price (MSP). Asserting that the farmers’ unions are all united, the SKM - a consortium of 40-odd organisations - said, morchas/campsites around Delhi borders will continue

with more tractor-trolleys reaching the protest sites and the struggle will continue. “More farmers are coming so that everyone can go back together victorious - SKM appeals to farmers and media not to believe falsehoods being spread about protests winding down - SKM will hold its meeting on December 4 as announced earlier,” the statement said. There is no meeting that has happened between

Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar and farm union leaders of that state, the SKM claimed. “In the Haryana SKM meeting, it was reiterated that the agitation will continue until the pending demands are met by the government, and until formal communication is received regarding the same. Haryana farmers’ organisations will join the SKM meeting on December 4 like other constituents and a collective stock-taking will take place on that day.” Meanwhile, the All India Kisan Sabha, a component of SKM, said: “The BJP Government has been incessantly peddling lies to cover up for their loss of face, having suffered a humiliating defeat at the hands of the united Kisan movement. Narendra Modi is graceless in defeat and insincere in the apology tendered, he has no remorse for the death of over 700 farmers and immense hardship farmers have had to undergo.”

NEW DELHI, DEC 1 (PTI): Members of the TRS, shouting slogans and displaying placards over farmer issues in Lok Sabha, on Wednesday briefly paused their protest to allow a woman member to raise the issue of maternity benefits, with the Chair hailing the gesture as “beauty of democracy”. As Pramila Bisoyi of the Biju Janata Dal got up to raise the issue of maternity benefits for more women, Rajendra Agrawal, who was in the Chair, requested Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) members to allow the senior member to make her point without disruption, to which they obliged. After Bisoyi made her remarks with TRS pausing their protests, Agrawal said, “This is the beauty of democracy, it is its strength.” The TRS members have been protesting in Lok Sabha over farmers’ issues, including paddy procurement by the Centre.

Rakesh Tikait

NEW DELHI, DEC 1 (IANS): Bhartiya Kisan Union (BKU) leader Rakesh Tikait on Wednesday said that the farmers will continue their agitation and will not return home until all their demands are met. Tikait was speaking to IANS after reports emerged that 32 farmers groups want to wind up the agitation as their major demand has been met. Alleging that the government is spreading rumours to divide farmers, he said the future course of agitation will be decided in the meeting of the Samyukt Kisan Morcha (SKM) to be

urged the farmers to remain united with the SKM and not issue any statement without the organisation’s approval. Tikait accused the government of not wanting to hold talks with the farmers. Asked if it is not blackmail not to end the agitation when the government has repealed the three contentious farm laws, he said there are other issues which need to be discussed. Tikait urged the government to take back all cases filed against the farmers during the agitation. “Farmers have lost 150 tractors during the stir. Can such a strong Prime Minister not provide new tractors to the farmers who have lost them. When Narayan Datt Tiwari was the (UP) Chief Minister he had compensated to the farmers who had accrued losses during the Muzaffarnagar agitation. When Congress can do it, why not BJP?” he asked.

heavy rainfall (115.6 mm to 204.5 mm) in November, the highest in the last five years, according to the IMD’s data. To put things in perspective, the number of heavy rainfall events this November was more than the total such events in the last four years -- 247 in 2020; 116 in 2019; 135 in 2018 and 139 in 2017. The Met office also said peninsular India gauged 160 per cent more rainfall -- 232.7 mm against the average of 89.5 mm -- in November, the highest in the month since 1901. The country as a whole received 56.5 mm of rainfall against the normal of 30.5 mm -- an excess of 85.4 per cent -- in November. Five low-pressure systems in November this year against the average of 2.4 is the reason behind the copi-

ous rainfall in peninsular India this time, officials said. Peninsular India comprises five meteorological subdivisions -- Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikkal; coastal Andhra Pradesh and Yanam; Rayalaseema; Kerala and Mahe, and South Interior Karnataka. The IMD said the region is most likely to see above-normal rainfall (more than 132 per cent of the long period average) in December. Based on the data of the 1961-2010 period, the long period average of rainfall in peninsular India in December is 44.54 mm. The Met office said below-normal rainfall is most likely over most areas of northwest India and some parts of central and northeast India. Normal rainfall is most likely over the remaining parts of the country.

The petition filed by Bharadwaj and the one filed by Dhawale and others had raised the common primary argument that the judges, who had taken cognisance of the case filed against them by the Pune police in 2018, did not have the legal jurisdiction to do so. As per their pleas, two additional sessions judges of the Pune sessions court, K D Vadane, who remanded Bharadwaj to custody, and R M Pande, who remanded Dhawale and the seven other petitioners to custody in 2018, had not been designated as special judges and therefore, could not have taken cognisance of their case registered for scheduled offences under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA). Bharadwaj, through her counsel Yug Chaudhry, had raised the additional ground that Judge Vadane also passed an order granting additional time to the Pune police to file their charge sheet in the case.

MUMBAI, DEC 1 (PTI): The Bombay High Court on Wednesday granted default bail to lawyer-activist Sudha Bharadwaj, who was arrested in the Elgar ParishadMaoist links case in August 2018 under provisions of the stringent UAPA, but rejected the pleas of eight other co-accused, including Varavara Rao Sudhir Dhawale and Vernon Gonsalves. A bench of Justices S S Shinde and N J Jamadar said in its order that Bharadwaj, accused of being part of a conspiracy to overthrow the Union government, was entitled to such bail and its denial would be in breach of her fundamental right to life and personal liberty guaranteed under Article 21 of the Constitution. The bench directed that Bharadwaj, currently lodged in the Byculla women’s prison here, be produced before the Mumbai special NIA court on December 8, and conditions of her bail and date of release be then decided by the special court.

But Nigeria stretched the timeline back even further Wednesday, when its national public health institute said it detected the variant in a sample it collected in October — also its first known case of the mutation. The worry and uncertainty about the new variant and the sometimes haphazard imposition of restrictions recalled the early days of the pandemic, as did the familiar realization that the virus had once again outpaced efforts to contain it. The variant has left the world once again whipsawed between hopes of returning to normal and fears that the worst is yet to come.

To a query about if she would lead the opposition alliance against the BJP, Banerjee said she was a “small worker” and wants to continue to be so. “Continuous endeavour is necessary in politics. You can’t be abroad most of the time,” she said, in a veiled dig at Congress leader Rahul Gandhi. “Have faith in your cadre. Three farm laws were repealed (by the Centre) and a debate was not allowed in Parliament...why? Because they are afraid and the decision to repeal was made with an eye on the coming Uttar Pradesh elections,” she said. “I am not contesting UP elections,” she said. The laws like the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) were being misused, Banerjee alleged. “The UAPA is for internal security and protection from external forces. This is not for common people. The UAPA is being misused like anything. The I-T department, CBI, ED are also being misused,” she said.

The recent trend of high GST revenues has been a result of various policy and administrative measures that have been taken in the past to improve compliance. GST, which subsumed a host of indirect taxes like excise duty, service tax, VAT, was rolled out on July 1, 2017. A large number of initiatives undertaken in the last one year like, enhancement of system capacity, nudging non-filers after last date of filing of returns, auto-population of returns, blocking of e-way bills and passing of input tax credit for non-filers has led to consistent improvement in the filing of returns over the last few months, the ministry added. ‘Vax plan only way to stop pandemic’

U N I T E D N AT I O N S (NEW YORK), DEC 1 (IANS): UN Secretar y General, Antonio Guterres has said that “the only way out of a global pandemic and out of this unjust and immoral situation is through a global vaccination campaign.” The Secretary General was speaking at a meeting at the UN headquarters in New York of Foreign Ministers of the Group of 77 (G77) and China, where he noted that the Covid-19 pandemic “continues to wreak havoc” on developed and developing countries alike. He added that the UN stands behind the vaccination strategy set out by the World Health Organization, with the goal of getting vaccines into the arms of 40 per cent of people in all countries by the end of 2021, and 70 per cent by the middle of 2022. “Ever yone, ever ywhere, must have access to Covid-19 vaccines, tests and treatment,” the top UN official said, asking for support for the ACT-accelerator and the Covax facility. The world economy is expected to grow by 5.9 per

cent in 2021, but the pace of recovery is extremely uneven, Guterres added. When developed economies invest 28 per cent of their GDP in recovery, middle income countries invest 6 per cent, and least developed nations invest just 1.8 per cent, this does not seem surprising to him, Xinhua news agency reported. In Sub-Saharan Africa, for example, the International Monetary Fund projects that cumulative economic growth per capita over the next five years will be 75 per cent less than the rest of the world. “This dangerous divergence threatens to widen as growth rates are expected to decrease in 2022. Rising inflation could also have a

negative impact on the cost of borrowing and servicing debt,” he warned. Climate change, inequality, and the development of new technologies were also addressed by the UN Chief, who called for “a quantum leap in unity and solidarity” to address these global problems. During the pandemic, the Secretary General highlighted the importance of multilateralism and the role of the UN. UN country teams released socio-economic response plans for 139 countries and territories. Nearly $3 billion was repurposed to prioritise immediate support, and another $2 billion was mobilised. Russia says it’s worried about Ukrainian military build-up MOSCOW, DEC 1 (AP): Ru s s i a o n We d n e s d ay expressed concern about Ukraine’s military build-up near the area of the separatist conflict in the country’s east, a statement that comes amid Ukrainian and western worries about an alleged plan by Moscow to invade its neighbour. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said the concentration of Ukrainian troops looks “alarming,” adding that he was going to raise the issue during a ministerial meeting in Stockholm of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe on Thursday. He again assailed Ukraine for failing to meet its obligations under a 2015 peace deal signed in Minsk that was brokered by France and Germany. “Kyiv is becoming increasingly insolent in its aggressiveness towards the Minsk agreements, the Russian Federation, and in its attempts to provoke the West to support its military ambitions,” Lavrov said in remarks in the upper house of Russia’s parliament. The Russian Foreign Ministry said that Lavrov was scheduled to meet with US Secretary of State Antony Blinken on the sidelines

of the meeting. Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said that Ukraine has amassed about 1,25,000 troops — about half of the size of its military — near the conflict zone. She also pointed at an increasing number of violations of a cease-fire in the east. Russian diplomats’ statement follow Ukrainian and Western officials’ concern about a Russian military build-up near Ukraine, which they said could signal plans by Moscow to invade its ex-Soviet neighbour. NATO foreign ministers warned Russia on Tuesday that any attempt to further destabilise Ukraine would be a costly mistake. The Kremlin has insisted it has no such intention and has accused Ukraine and its Western backers of making the claims to cover up their own allegedly aggressive designs.

Russia annexed Ukraine’s Crimean Peninsula in 2014 after the country’s Kremlin-friendly president was driven from power by mass protests and also threw its weight behind a separatist insurgency that broke out in Ukraine’s eastern industrial heartland known as Donbas. More than 14,000 people have died in the fighting. Ukraine and the West accused Russia of sending its troops and weapons to back the rebels. Moscow denied that, charging that Russians who joined the separatists were volunteers. In Wednesday’s address to parliament, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy called for negotiations with Russia to end the conflict in the east. “We must tell the truth — we wouldn’t be able to stop the war without direct talks with Russia,” Zelenskyy said. “We aren’t afraid of a direct dialogue.” The Kremlin responded by reaffirming its longheld stance that Russia isn’t a party to the conflict in eastern Ukraine, describing the fighting in the east as a civil war. It emphasised that it expects Kyiv to meet its obligations under the 2015 Minsk agreement.

eral, it was recent reforms that enabled the world body to adjust and respond quickly. “As a result, more than 90 per cent of host governments have indicated that the UN today is more relevant to their country’s development needs when compared to three years ago,” he said. On the 2030 Agenda and the Paris Agreement, the UN Chief added that “we must intensify our efforts in this Decade of Action to deliver the sustainable development goals. This is vital to achieving a fair globalisation, boosting economic growth and preventing conflict.” Noting that the outcome of COP26 in Glasgow was the bare minimum required to keep the 1.5-degree promise of Paris alive, Guterres said that he counts on the leadership of the G77 and China over the coming year “to increase ambition and push for that ambition not only on mitigation, but on adaptation -- a basic need for so many countries -- on finance, and on loss and damage, where we still have such a long way to go.”

New Zealand to send military and police to Solomon Islands WELLINGTON, DEC 1 (AP): New Zealand will send up to 65 military and police personnel to the Solomon Islands in the coming days after rioting and looting broke out there last week over several issues, including concerns about the country’s increasing links with China. New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said Wednesday she was “deeply concerned” by the civil unrest that unfolded in the capital, Honiara, and wanted to help restore peace and stability. The New Zealand deployment follows similar actions from Australia, Papua New Guinea and Fiji after the Solomon Islands government requested international help. Solomon Islands police found three bodies in a burned-out building and arrested more than 100 people amid the violence. The latest deployment of foreign personnel comes ahead of a push by Solomon Islands opposition leader Matthew Wale to hold a no-confidence vote next week on Prime Minister Manasseh Sogavare. “This is a shortterm, immediate response and we will continue to

monitor the situation,” said New Zealand’s Foreign Affairs Minister Nanaia Mahuta. New Zealand plans to send 15 military personnel Thursday followed by up to 50 more military and police personnel over the weekend. The unrest was sparked by underlying grievances between the two main islands in a rivalry that dates back decades. Part of the concern relates to the country’s increasing links with China. Sogavare has been widely criticised by leaders of the island of Malaita for a 2019 decision to drop diplomatic ties with Taiwan in favour of mainland China.

Sogavare’s gover nment, meanwhile, has been upset over millions in US aid promised directly to Malaita, rather than through the central government on the largest island of Guadalcanal, where Honiara is located. Sogavare has blamed outside interference for stirring up the protests calling for his resignation, with a thinly veiled reference to Taiwan and the US. Riots and looting targeting Honiara’s Chinatown and downtown precincts erupted November 24 following a peaceful protest in the capital by people from Malaita.

8 rebels killed in fighting in central Philippines MANILA, DEC 1 (IANS): At least eight rebels were killed when government forces clashed with the leftist New People’s Army (NPA) members in the central Philippines on Wednesday morning, the military said. Major General Benedict Arevalo, commander of the army’s third Infantry Division, said fighting broke out around 6 a.m. local time between soldiers and up to 70 NPA rebels near Miagao town in Iloilo province. The gun battle continued until around noontime, Arevalo said, adding that a clearing operation is ongoing in the clash site, Xinhua news agency reported. Troops rushed to the area after villagers tipped off the presence of guerrillas in the forested area to prepare for an attack on a military camp, he said. Aside from the bodies of eight rebels, Arevalo said the troops also seized three M16 assault rifles, an AK-47, four landmines, and grenades. There were no casualties on the government side, Arevalo said.

Japan urges airlines to halt Ukraine urges NATO to be ready with bookings over Omicron fears sanctions in case of Russian invasion TOKYO, DEC 1 (IANS): Japan’s transportation ministry on Wednesday requested airlines to stop bookings for incoming flights to Japan for one month as fears are growing among people over the Omicron variant of the coronavirus. However, people with existing bookings will still be able to fly into Japan. The decision came after a second case of the Omicron variant was reported in the country. The strain was detected in a man in his 20s who arrived from Peru at Narita Airport near Tokyo on Saturday. Earlier on Wednesday, Chief Cabinet Secretary Hirokazu Matsuno announced the government would ban all foreign travellers from South Africa and nine other African nations effective Thursday, including foreign residents returning to the country, Xinhua news agency reported. Japanese citizens are allowed to return from those 10 countries, but they will be required to isolate at a government-designated facility for 10 days.

RIGA, DEC 1 (REUTERS): Ukraine urged NATO on Wednesday to prepare economic sanctions on Russia to deter a possible invasion by tens of thousands of Russian troops concentrated within reach of its border. Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba said he would make the request to NATO foreign ministers meeting for the second day in Latvia to discuss how to respond to the Russian build-up and avert potentially the most danger-

ous crisis in relations with Moscow since the Cold War. “We will call on the allies to join Ukraine in putting together a deterrence package,” Kuleba told reporters as he arrived for the talks in Riga. This should

include preparing economic sanctions against Russia, in case it “decides to chose the worst-case scenario”, Kuleba said, adding that NATO should also boost military and defence cooperation with Ukraine. Ukraine is not a member of NATO but the U.S.-led alliance has said it is committed to preserving the sovereignty of the former Soviet republic, which has tilted towards the West since 2014 and aspires to join both NATO and the European Union.

Nigerian anti-drug agency destroys EU decides against emergency 20 tons of drugs, illegal substances summit on omicron for now LAGOS, DEC 1 (IANS): Nigeria’s anti-drug agency has burned down 20 tons of drugs and illegal substances as part of the ongoing fight against drug abuse and illicit drug trafficking in the West African nation, an official said. Mohammed Buba Marwa, Chair man of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), on Tuesday said at a ceremony held on the outskirts of Abuja that the exercise was under the prescription of the

country’s environmental regulations enforcement agency, concerning the best method of disposing of seized drugs without polluting environmental ecosystem or endangering public health. He described the public destruction of 20 tons of assorted illicit drugs as a further affirmation of the resolve of the anti-drug agency to fight drug abuse and trafficking, Xinhua news agency reported. He told the gathering the destroyed illicit

drugs included cocaine, heroin and other illegal substances, which have been seized in different operations across the country in recent months. While stating the quantity of drugs being destroyed is a reminder of the magnitude of the drug problem in the country, Marwa said the dire implications of the country’s drug prevalence rate are the reason the NDLEA has doubled down on efforts and is now aggressively pursuing its mandate.

BRUSSELS, DEC 1 (AP): The European Union has decided against holding a special remote summit of the bloc’s leaders on the omicron coronavirus variant for the time being, an official said Wednesday. The EU’s 27 health ministers will first assess the situation next Tuesday before it will be put to the leaders in the Dec 16 regularly planned summit, an EU official said on condition of anonymity because the meeting hadn’t been officially announced. An emergency summit had been discussed for days, but it was tough to find a time slot for all the leaders. It was also unclear exactly what the leaders could decide while so much remained uncertain about the new variant that was first discovered in southern Africa. The EU nations and the European Council will monitor the developments on a daily basis. As of Tuesday, 44 cases of omicron were reported across 11 EU nations, said the EU’s European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control, adding that the majority involved a history of travel to Africa.

‘debt traps and data traps’ NEW DELHI, DEC 1 (IANS): MI6 chief Richard Moore has warned of China’s “debt traps and data traps” in his first live broadcast interview, BBC reported. Mr Moore -- known as “C” -- told BBC Radio 4’s Today programme these traps threatened to erode sovereignty and have prompted defensive measures. In a wide-ranging interview before he gave his first major public speech since taking on the role as head of MI6, Moore warned that China has the capability to “harvest data from around the world” and uses money to “get people on the hook”. Speaking about the threat posed by China, Moore described its use of “debt traps and data traps”. He said Beijing is “trying to use influence through its economic policies to try and sometimes, I think, get people on the hook”, BBC reported. Explaining the “data trap”, he said: “If you al-

Authorities were made aware of posts on social media that said there had been threats of a shooting at the roughly 1,700-student school, but Bouchard said they didn’t know about the rumors until after the attack. He stressed how crucial it is for tips of the kind to be sent to authorities, while also cautioning against spreading social media rumours before a full investigation. McCabe also downplayed the significance of a situation in early November when a deer head was thrown off the school roof, which he said was “absolutely unrelated” to the shooting. The vandalism prompted school administrators to post two letters to parents on the school’s website, saying they were responding to rumors of a threat against the school but had found none.

robin match against Spain’s Clara Azurmendi due to a groin niggle. She played in Denmark but again withdrew midway into the second game of the first round match at French Open. “She had a tough groin injury in Uber Cup. She was fine in Denmark but it didn’t heal properly and again started paining when she was playing in French Open. It aggravated and became serious,” said Kashyap. “She also had a knee injury in France and had to pull out. She is doing her rehabilitation now. Hopefully, she will be able to get back to training from 10th or 15th of this month.” In a stellar career, Saina has never missed the World Championships since making her debut in the 2006 edition. The 31-year-old from Hyderabad claimed the silver in 2015 when her rampaging run was stopped by Spain’s Carolina Marin in the final. She also secured a bronze two years later at Glasgow, Scotland. In 2018, Saina claimed her second individual gold medal at the Commonwealth Games and also helped the country win its first mixed team title in the quadrennial event.

sure of the points for the away side with a deft flick after Federico Bernardeschi’s deflected cross fizzed into him. Dybala then skied a stoppage-time penalty and wasted an opportunity to make the scoreline more emphatic, but few in black and white will care after two embarrassing defeats to Chelsea and Atalanta and a

straight league match thanks to Pasalic’s treble and a Teun Koopmeiners strike which puts them level on 31 points with Inter Milan in third. Gian Piero Gasperini’s Atalanta are unbeaten in 8 in Italy and cannot be discounted from title race after swatting promoted Venezia aside despite making a raft of changes from Saturday’s win over Juve in Turin. Pasalic made it an uphill battle for the away side when he collected Josip Ilicic’s perfect through ball before sliding in his 7th-minute opener, and the Croat rifled home the second five minutes later. Venezia never looked like responding from their early setback and Koopmeiners made absolutely sure of the points just before the hour mark, arrowing in his first ever Serie A goal from the edge of the box after a neat exchange of passes between Ilicic, Pasalic and Giuseppe Pezzella. Pasalic completed a perfect evening for him and his high-flying team with a simple finish 10 minutes later following dazzling dribbling from Luis Muriel.

MILAN, DEC 1 (AGENCIES): Juventus escaped Salernitana with a hardfought 2-0 win on Tuesday which brought some positivity after a difficult week, while Atalanta are on the heels of Serie A’s leaders following a Mario Pasalic-inspired 4-0 win over Venezia. Paulo Dybala and Alvaro Morata struck the goals which gave struggling Juve the points at the Stadio Arechi but they stay seventh, seven points behind Atalanta who sit fourth in the final Champions League spot. Dybala lashed home the opener in the 21st minute after a neat one-two with Dejan Kulusevski and 10 minutes later Juve thought they had doubled their lead through captain Chiellini. However after the veteran defender had celebrated pushing home the rebound following Juan Cuadrado’s free-kick thwacking the post, the goal was ruled out by VAR officials who spotted Moise Kean straying fractionally offside as the Colombian struck his shot.

Jr. Hockey WC: India beat Belgium TO CLASH WITH GERMANY IN SEMIFINALS

BHUBANESWAR, DEC 1 (AGENCIES): The defending champions India defeated Belgium by 1-0 in the quarterfinal of the FIH Junior Men’s Hockey World Cup here at the Kalinga stadium on Wednesday. The hosts will meet the six-time champions Germany in the semifinal on December 3. With the victory in the last eight, India have extended their alltime head-to-head record against Belgium to 5-0 in the tournament. The quarterfinal match between the two sides was the repeat of the 2016 final, where India defeated Belgium by 2-1. Belgium started off in an electrifying fashion but couldn’t find an opening goal. The side kept snatching the ball from India, but neither of them could earn a penalty corner. Indian mid-field looked not up to the mark, which provided gaps to the Belgians. India attempted to control the ball but they were dispossessed by Belgium throughout the first quarter, which ended in 0-0. In the second quarter, India’s Sunil Jojo was

handed a green card which forced him to sit out of the game for two minutes. The hosts finally woke up in the 20th minute as they earned a penalty corner. It was Shardanand Tiwari who broke the deadlock by converting the penalty corner into his team’s opening goal. Soon, India conceded a penalty corner in the 27th minute. The custodians of Belgium, however, missed

the shot from the goalpost. The hooter signalled the half-time, with India leading 1-0 against Belgium. Belgium’s misery to level the score continued throughout the second-half of the game. The visiting side won their second penalty corner in the 52nd minute, but the hosts’ defence stood tall and strong to keep Belgium attack away from the goalpost. Belgium ear ned a

third penalty corner in the 58th minute but India goalkeeper Pawan denied the opposition. Earlier, Germany, Argentina and France progressed to the semifinals of the tournament. While Germany and Argentina fought hard to outclass Spain and Netherlands respectively, France had an easy outing to defeat Malaysia to cruise into the last four.

Second Chinese Grand Prix 100% realistic: F1 boss BEIJING, DEC 1 (IANS): Formula 1 CEO Stefano Domenicali says the sport has received interest in a second Grand Prix in China, and that the arrival of Zhou Guanyu onto the 2022 grid will have a “huge impact” on F1’s popularity in the country. Due to China’s strict COVID-related entry restrictions, the Chinese Grand Prix has not taken place since 2019, and will not feature on next year’s F1 calendar. Despite these setbacks, F1 earlier this month agreed a deal for the Shanghai-based race to continue until 2025, in a clear sign that the sport remains committed to growing its presence within China.Notwithstanding the lack of a Grand Prix, Chinese interest in F1 is nevertheless expected to increase next year when Zhou becomes the country’s first F1 race driver, Xinhua reports. Speaking to digital media outlet The Race on Tuesday, Domenicali said it was “100 per cent” realistic for China to have a second Grand Prix. “I can tell you we have already received interest from another city to have a (second) Grand Prix in China,” Domenicali said.

Mumbai City go top of ISL table with 5-1 win against ATK Mohun Bagan F AT O R DA , D E C 1 (AGENCIES): It was a dominant display from the defending champions as Mumbai City FC beat ATK Mohun Bagan 5-1 in a repeat of last season’s final in the 2021-22 Indian Super League at the Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Fatorda on Wednesday. Vikram Pratap Singh (4’, 25’), Igor Angulo (38’), Mourtada Fall (47’), Bipin Singh (52’) scored for the title-holders. David Williams (60’) came off the bench to score a consolation. Antonio Lopez Habas retained trust in the same set of players that won bragging right in the Kolkata derby over the weekend. Mumbai City, who were subjected to a 3-1 loss to Hyderabad FC on the same day, made two alterations. Mandar Rao Dessai started at left back as Vikram assumed Raynier’s place on the right wing. Young Vikram took less than four minutes to repay the faith Des Buckingham put on him. shot first time into the net, nutmegging goalkeeper Amrinder Singh. The wave of attacks remained relentless. The ATKMB defence had no answers when another bit of build-up play from the left saw Bipin’s delivery tapped home by Vikram on the second time of asking as he slid in, almost colliding with Amrinder. Bagan’s sorry state of affairs was highlighted by their zero shots on target in the first half. City was not done as Mandar’s cross was laid down by Fall inside the box and the dangerous marksman Angulo had no trouble guiding the

ball into the net, putting his side three to the good before the break. With Deepak Tangri sent off right after the resumption, City made it 4-0 with Fall heading in a freekick from Jahouh. While it looked nowhere close to the final but two goalscorers from both sides in last season’s showpiece, Bipin Singh and David Williams made their way into the scoresheet before the hour mark.

BWF World Tour Finals: Sindhu, Australia’s vaccine mandate is not to ‘blackmail’ Djokovic: minister Srikanth make winning starts

PV Sindhu and Kidambi Srikanth

BALI (INDONESIA), DEC 1 (IANS): Ace Indian shuttlers PV Sindhu and Kidambi Srikanth began their 2021 BWF World Tour Finals campaigns with wins over Denmark’s Line Christophersen and France’s Toma Junior Popov respectively, here on Wednesday. Two-time Olympic medallist Sindhu beat Christophersen 21-14, 21-16, in her first match of Group A in women’s singles. Reigning badminton world champion’s long reach and solid defence countered Christophersen’s aggressive play in the opening game as she took an 11-9

lead into the break. After the restart, Indian shifted gears and easily wrapped up the game 21-14. In the second game, the 21-year-old Christophersen showed more maturity and gave competition to Sindhu. However, with the score at 13-13, the experienced shuttler forced the momentum in her favour with four back-to-back points and proceeded to end the match in straight games. The 26-year old Sindhu will now take on Germany’s Yvonne Li and Thai shuttler Pornpawee Chochuwong in the next two group matches on Thurs-

day and Friday respectively. Notably, the participating players (in men’s and women’s singles) and doubles teams (in men’s, women’s and mixed doubles) are divided into two groups of four each in every category at the 2021 BWF World Tour Finals. The top two from each group make the semifinals. Meanwhile, former world No 1 Kidambi Srikanth registered a comfortable 21-14, 21-16 victory over France’s Toma Junior Popov in the men’s singles Group B opener. Srikanth will face three-time junior world champion Kunlavut Vitidsarn in his next group match on Thursday. H o w e v e r, i n t h e women’s doubles, India’s Ashwini Ponnappa and N Sikki Reddy went down 21-14, 21-18 to the Japanese second seeds Nami Matsuyama and Chiharu Shida. Up against Bulgaria’s Gabriela and Stefani Stoeva on Thursday, the Indian pair will need to bounce back to keep their final four hopes alive.

MELBOURNE, DEC 1 (AGENCIES): The Australian Open’s COVID-19 vaccine mandate is about protecting the community, not about “blackmailing” Novak Djokovic, a state government official said on Wednesday. Organisers of the year’s first Grand Slam have said all players would have to be vaccinated to take part, drawing criticism from world number one Djokovic’s father. “Under these blackmails and conditions, (Djokovic) probably won’t

(play),” Srdjan Djokovic told Serbian media. Victoria sports minister Martin Pakula said the vaccine mandate applied to all athletes in the southern Australian state, which hosts the Australian Open in Melbourne. “If you’re a visiting international tennis player, or a visiting sportsman of any kind, it’s about your responsibility to the community that you are being welcomed into,” Pakula told Australian media. “And that’s why we are asking those international tennis stars to follow the

same requirements as Victorians are. “It’s not about blackmail, it’s about making sure the Victorian community is protected. “I want to make it clear that I really hope that Novak Djokovic gets vaccinated and plays in the Australian Open. “But if he chooses not to, that’s a matter for him.” Djokovic has won nine Melbourne Park titles, including this year’s tournament, and shares the record of 20 men’s Grand Slams with Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal.

Phoenix Suns outlast Warriors for 17th straight win My heart and soul with RCB: Kohli after being retained by franchise

PHOENIX, DEC 1 (AGENCIES): Jae Crowder hit a pair of jumpers, including a 3-pointer, after the Golden State Warriors had closed within one point in the fourth quarter and the host Phoenix Suns went on to win the Pacific Division showdown 104-96 for a franchise-record-tying 17th consecutive victory Tuesday night. Deandre Ayton (24 points, 11 rebounds) and Chris Paul (15 points, 11 assists) recorded doubledoubles for the Suns, who won despite losing Devin Booker to a strained left hamstring in the second quarter. Booker’s injury occurred on a drive to the hoop midway through the second quarter. He was taken to the locker room, and the Suns announced he would not return. The Suns’ winning streak matches the 17 straight won by the 2006-07 team, bridging December 2006 and January 2007, and also completed the NBA’s first 16-0 calendar month since the Warriors accomplished the feat in November 2015 as part of their record-

setting 24-0 start. Jordan Poole had a game-high 28 points and Otto Porter 16 for the Warriors, whose star, Stephen Curry, was limited to 12 points on 4-for-21 shooting. The clubs will meet in a rematch Friday night in San Francisco. Lakers 117, Kings 92: Anthony Davis scored 25 points, Malik Monk shot

6 of 10 from 3-point range en route to 22 points off the bench and Los Angeles beat host Sacramento without LeBron James. Russell Westbrook finished with 23 points, six assists and five rebounds, and the Lakers’ bench tallied 58 points as James was scratched from the lineup late due to COVID-19 health and safety protocols.

The Kings’ Richaun Holmes made 12 of 13 shots for a game-high 27 points, De’Aaron Fox scored 17 and Chimezie Metu tallied 14 points and 11 rebounds. Trail Blazers 110, Pistons 92: CJ McCollum recorded 28 points and six assists and reserve Ben McLemore scored a seasonhigh 17 points as Portland sailed past visiting Detroit.

Portland easily improved to 10-1 at home despite not having the services of six-time All-Star Damian Lillard, who sat out due to a lingering abdominal injury. Jusuf Nurkic had 13 points, eight rebounds and five assists as the Trail Blazers snapped a three-game slide. Anfernee Simons added 12 points, six rebounds and five assists while starting in Lillard’s place. Rookie No. 1 overall draft pick Cade Cunningham scored a career-high 26 points for the Pistons, who lost their seventh consecutive game. Isaiah Stewart contributed 15 points and 14 rebounds while Jerami Grant added 14 points. Grizzlies 98, Raptors 91: Jaren Jackson Jr. scored 25 points and blocked a season-best five shots -- two in the fourth quarter -- as Memphis won in Toronto. Desmond Bane scored 13 of his 23 points in the first quarter for the Grizzlies, who lost at home to the Raptors last week. Dillon Brooks added 17 points for the Grizzlies, who have won two in a row without star Ja Morant (knee).

NEW DELHI, DEC 1 (IANS): After being retained by the Indian Premier League franchise Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), India Test and ODI skipper Virat Kohli said that his heart and soul is with RCB and he did not have second thoughts about staying with the team for the next three editions of the tournament. Kohli shared an emotional message on the official YouTube channel of RCB, saying his best with RCB is yet to come. “I will be there with my heart and soul for RCB. The journey continues. When I was contacted, (I) did not have any second thoughts at all. It has been an amazing journey over the years, three more years with the franchise that means so much to me,” said Kohli in a video posted on the official YouTube channel of RCB. “I believe the best is yet to come and I have a special feeling about what is to come next season onwards,” he added. RCB revealed their retained players ahead

of the mega auction and they were Kohli, Glenn Maxwell and Mohammed Siraj. Kohli, who has been with the team since its inception, was retained for Rs 15 crore. Maxwell, who was signed by the team last season, remains with the side with a tag of Rs 11 crores. Siraj, who has been with the team since 2018, will carry on with RCB for a sum of Rs 7 crore. “Our fan base is amazing, management has been amazing with me and all other players. Fans can see with renewed energy and a different version of me on the field. But I will be there with my heart and soul for RCB,” he added.

Speaking about the retained players, Mike Hesson, Director of Cricket Operations, RCB, said, “The player retention process has been pretty robust and exhaustive. We’ve got an exceptional bunch of players but the key for us was to ensure we have a sizeable auction purse going into the IPL Mega Auction. We had many good players whom we considered and were happy to retain, but that would have taken away our flexibility from the auction to get a balanced squad. “We look to retain as many players during the auction as we build the perfect squad for 2022 and beyond,” he added. Kohli has relinquished his T20 captaincy after the T20 World Cup. However, eyebrows were raised when he announced on social media that he would relinquish the captaincy. With a lot of theories floating around about the reason for such a decision, Kohli had said that he was not ready to add fuel to the fire.
