Doctors decry allegations on social media
Staff Reporter
DIMAPUR, SEP 1 (NPN): Doctors from several leading private hospitals in Dimapur including chief medical officer (CMO) of the District Hospital Dimapur(DHD) have strongly dismissed several allegations made on social media platforms particularly concerning Covid-19. The medical fraternity came together to address a press conference held at CMO office Dimapur. Nagaland Private Doctors Association (NPDA) president, Dr. Victo Wotsa, strongly reiterated that no hospital, whether private or government, was trying to make money out of Covid. Dr. Wotsa said that the hospitals were instead, treating covid patients by sacrificing their own resources. The NPDA president explained that there were many things involved in treating Covid patient such as when hospitals do not charge the patient for PPE suit worn by a sweeper when the latter goes in to the Covid ward. “The hospital is sacrificing in its bit by doing humanitarian work by taking care of Covid patients,” Dr. Wotsa stated. He said that the medical fraternity, despite tire-
NSF slams Ravi’s Independence Day speech DIMAPUR, SEP 1 (NPN): Naga Students’ Federation (NSF) has accused the Governor of Nagaland and Interlocutor for Naga peace talks, RN Ravi, of attempting to “distort the historical truth” in his 75th Independence Day message, wherein he claimed that Naga leaders thwarted the conspiracy of the British to give away the North-East India to Pakistan. Naga Students’ Federation through its media cell also said that Ravi’s “continued glorification” of the Naga People’s Convention (NPC) and the 16th Point charter of demands, which it claimed, had long been disowned by the Naga people and that Ravi’s various acts of patronising NPC’s founders and leaders was “a matter of great concern” to the Naga youth and students. The federation said that the Naga youth and students were fed up of R.N. Ravi’s rhetoric and advised him to “refrain from furthering the old ‘carrot and stick’ policy and adopt a more pragmatic approach”. (Full text on p-6)

lessly working for the betterment of the society in the past 18 months through caring for Covid patients, has instead been at the receiving end many a times. Dr. Wotsa pointed out that doctors have been trying their best, but, sometimes, due to stress and workload, doctors and nurses were sometimes not in a position to provide all the desired explanation expected by the patients. Dismissing the allegations floating on social media platforms about Covid testing, Director Christian Institute of Health Sciences and Research (CIHSR), Dr. Sedevi Angami, said that there were three types of testing-- Rapid Antigen Test (RAT), TrueNat and RT PCR test. As per the guidelines from the ministry of health, he said that a Covid
positive once tested positive through any of three tests did not require to undergo retest. Dr. Sedevi, however, said that if a patient was detected negative through RAT, and that the medical team finds high index of suspicion, it was necessary to go for higher Covid test, such as TrueNat or RT PCR test. He disclosed that RAT specificity was only around 45-50%. Dr Sedevi expressed regret that many people were of the assumption that doctors were trying to make money by doing repeated Covid tests without proper knowledge of testing kits and results. He asserted that no doctor was keen to label a person as Covid patient and that many doctors and health workers had also died treating Covid patients.
On allegation on social media platforms, Dr. Sedevi reasserted that discussions on social media were very much one sided. He said allegations were made by people who were not well trained nor were professionals. He said allegations on social media, whether true or false had great impact and also adverse results in breaking trust between medical fraternity and people and rendering it a lose-lose situation for all. Further, Dr. Sedevi said that a suggestion was given to deputy commissioner Dimapur to create an impartial committee, consisting of professional, social worker or lawyer, to make enquiry into the allegations rampant in social media. Also two doctors from Zion Hospital also refuted the allegations made by patient’s party following the demise of the patient. They stated that one specific patient did not allow the medical staff to sanitize the body even after testing positive for Covid. The doctors said that as per the state government guidelines, if a Covid infected patient happened to die, the body was to be sprayed, cleaned and properly sealed.
Students tested Covid positive
Wi t h s c h o o l s a n d colleges resuming regular classes in the State, there has been reports about positive cases being reported in some institutions in Dimapur. CMO Dimapur Dr. Moatemjen informed Nagaland Post that some students residing in school hostels had recently tested positive. He maintained that contact tracing was conducted and the students, who had tested positive, were sent for home isolation and those tested negative were advised for self-quarantine. A health official said that it was unsafe for students to be attending regular classes. The official said that even though teachers and school staff were vaccinated, the students were not vaccinated, adding that chances of getting infected from outside the schools was very high. Amid declining Covid cases across the country, many schools have again shut or postponed further from opening following positive cases being reported among students attending (Cont’d on p-8) classes.

Urging the authorities

They also pointed out that though Rs. 262 crore was spent under the smart city project, no development progress could be seen anywhere. They further alleged that the government had tur ned the traders into “guinea pigs” by experimenting its various plans along that stretch even as they were running their businesses with huge losses everyday.
DIMAPUR, SEP 1 (NPN): Drawing attention to the state government’s proposal to change the nomenclature of GB and its role urban area, the Mokokchung District GB Association (MDGBA) has cautioned that separation between urban and rural GB institution would have negative result. In a press release, MDGBA president Along Jamir and secretary Imlitemsu Jamir said that GB institution was introduced in the early part of British regime in villages and towns. MDGBA said that the intention of the British government was to send its delegates/agents to the established village. As the established vil-
lage republic and its administrative system was “a complete/real democratic”, the association said that the British government, therefore, did not disturb Naga structural government and only sent its agents/delegates to established Naga administrative institution. Further, MDGBA said those government agents were called GBs/Mauzadar, who were delegated the power of legislation, executive and judiciary. Even after more than one hundred years, the association said the system was being practiced conveniently without any disturbance from any corner. (Cont’d on p-8)

MMR, Tdap vax linked with increased protection against severe COVID Patton, Along and others condole WASHINGTON, SEP 1 (PTI): Measles-Mumps-Rubella (MMR) and TetanusDiphtheria-Pertussis (Tdap) vaccines have been associated with increased protection against COVID-19 and reduction in severity of the disease, according to a study. The researchers at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in the US noted that vaccines are designed to induce a strong and longlasting immune response through the creation of memory T cells and B cells. MMR vaccine, given during
early childhood, and Tdap preventive, given every 10 years, are known to elicit a protective response against the diseases from which the vaccines get their names, they said.
However, it is possible that these vaccines may also elicit cross-reactive memory T cells capable of responding to protein targets called antigens present in other disease-causing microbes,
including the viral antigens in SARS-CoV-2. The study, published in the journal Med, suggests that pre-existing memory T cells generated by prior MMR or Tdap vaccination and activated by SARS-CoV-2 infection give the immune system a head start in responding to the virus, thereby lowering the risk of severe disease. The researchers conducted laboratory-based analyses using sensitive, new techniques to detect and characterise T cell responses to antigens. They
applied these techniques to measure the response of T cells isolated from the blood of COVID-19 convalescent patients and patients vaccinated against the disease to antigens from SARS-CoV-2 and the MMR and Tdap vaccines. The team, including researchers from Cleveland Clinic, US, leveraged a large, well-annotated cohort of COVID-19 patients and found that prior MMR or Tdap vaccination was associated with decreased disease severity. S H I L LO N G, S E P 1 : After months of having remained closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, schools, colleges and the tourism sector reopened in Meghalaya on Wednesday in keeping with safety norms. The first day of reopening of educational institutions and tourism evoked mixed response, even as uniformed students were seen going to their institutions. Maintaining that the health of students is the government’s top priority, Education Minister Lahkmen Rymbui said majority of the parents and teachers are welcoming the government’s decision to reopen the schools and colleges and said, “attendance is also not mandatory.” However, he said that the government will review the functioning of the schools from time to time due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

All schools, private and public reopened in urban and rural areas, whereas in the urban areas, online classes would continue for classes 1 to 5, school visits for classes 6 to 8 and on-campus classes for students of classes 9 to 12. ITANAGAR, SEPT 1 (PTI): Arunachal Pradesh C h i e f M i n i s t e r Pe m a Khandu has requested the Centre for increasing the area under oil palm cultivation in the state to 12,000-15,000 hectares in the first year of the Centre’s new mission to boost its production. The Union Cabinet had on August 18 approved the National Mission on Edible Oils - Oil Palm (NMEO-OP), with a focus on the northeast region and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, to promote the domestic cultivation of oil palm in the next five years. Allaying the fear of the impact of oil palm cultivation on forests, the chief minister said it is unlikely to have any effect since the areas identified for the purpose cover only wasteland, an official statement said here. He made this plea while participating in a video conference the Union Agriculture Minister Na-
Pema Khandu
rendra Singh Tomar and DoNER Minister G Kishan Reddy had with chief ministers of all the northeastern states on Tuesday, the statement said. Khandu said that a Central government committee has already identified 1.33 lakh hectares of wasteland in Arunachal Pradesh for oil palm cultivation. The chief minister informed the Union ministers that the state has 25 lakh hectares of cultivable area of which only 2.5 lakh hectares have been put to use.
On slow coverage of oil palm cultivation in the state, he attributed it to a lack of commitment from the promoters in setting up processing factories, which had led to a loss of confidence among the farmers. Khandu said a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with one of the promoters was cancelled and meetings have been called with the existing ones to fast track the mission. Speaking on the Organic Mission, Khandu said that the state had launched the mission in 2016 with the target of completing it by 2023, covering an area of 1-lakh hectares. He said phases 1 and 2 of the mission are complete, and phase 3 is currently underway. Khandu further requested the Union ministers to set up small cold chain storage facilities across the state to reduce the wastage of farm produce.
Sushmita Dev claims BJP’s ‘unfulfilled Flood condition worsens in Assam; 6.48 lakh hit promises’ had given TMC space in Tripura
AGARTALA, SEPT 1 (PTI): Trinamool Congress leader Sushmita Dev on Wednesday, claimed that as the ruling BJP had not lived up to promises made while the Left Front had weakened with time, her party would get a “readymade platform” to expand in the state. Dev, former President of All India Mahila Congress joined TMC recently and came here on Wednesday from Silchar in neighbouring Assam to bolster the party’s organization. “When I came to Tripura on behalf of Congress in 2018, BJP had made many poll-promises to the people. However, the saffron party never fulfilled those promises. This has created a readymade platform for the TMC (to expand here),” she told the media here.
Sushmita Dev
She added that the Left front which had ruled the state earlier has become inactive while the Congress “doesn’t even have a committee for all the booths.” The daughter of former Union Minister Santosh Mohan Dev also asserted BJP would not be able to retain power in the next assembly polls. Dev said she along with other party workers would work hard to strengthen the Trinamool Congress organisation at the grassroots over the
next few months. Soon after joining the Mamata Banerjeeled party, Dev, a former Lok Sabha MP, had launched a massive membership drive for TMC in Silchar. Meanwhile, two other TMC leaders from West Bengal- Bratya Basu and Pratima Mandal, MP also arrived in the state on Wednesday. Speaking to the media, Basu said, “It is fine if BJP doesn’t accept us as opposition, then why are they attacking our party workers? Why are they creating pressure on TMC activists? Why are they so afraid of us?” Mandal said that people in Tripura were ready to form a TMC government and get benefits of the West Bengal Government’s development model. She said the TMC was hopeful of victory in the next assembly polls slated for early 2023.

CLARIFICATION Apropos to Nagaland Post, dated 14th August 2021 and Tir Yimyim dated 15th August, 2021 of Ao Senso Telongjem (ASTD) statement about the Naga Council Dimapur (NCD) imbroglio which was distorted of facts and bereft of truth, the undersigned is compelled to issue this Clarification upon the failure of ASTD to clarify the same as requested on 24th August, 2021. 1. ASTD appointed us to be Councilors at the NCD but upon the directives of NCD to replace us, ASTD nominated new Councilors to represent ASTD at the NCD. (Ref. letter No. ASTD/GEN/01/12/49-50 dt 10/07/21). Therefore, the statement of ASTD in print media that we were relieved of responsibilities because of going to Court is a blatant lie. 2. New Office bearers of the NCD were appointed by the outgoing Councilors upon their selfish choice without following the constitutional provisions of electing/selecting the new Office bearers by the councilors themselves. Therefore, along with other likeminded councilors, a PIL was moved in the court of law against the same for which responsible leaders from ASTD were consulted before the same was undertaken. Therefore, the allegation that participating in court litigation along with other councilors from various Naga tribes against the illegal and unconstitutional formation of NCD office bearers has brought embarrassment to the Ao community is baseless and a big lie. In fact, the ASTD should be questioning the veracity of the constitution of NCD office unconstitutionally. 3. ASTD initiated in signing an MOU based on mutual trust and understanding between the contending parties of the court case on 6th May, 2021 but unfortunately the same was not honored by ASTD in letter and spirit. Therefore, some of our Naga tribes implored upon the President of ASTD to clarify his stand on the signing of the MOU. But instead of responding to the same, ASTD issued false, fabricated and defaming statements against us in print media which is unacceptable.

GUWAHATI, AUG 31 (PTI): Assam Lok Sabha MP Gaurav Gogoi on Tuesday wrote to Railway minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, making a case for extension of Vistadome tourist special train services to Silchar in Barak Valley of the state. He said if the route of the train is not extended till Silchar, the objectives of ensuring connectivity as well as making economic gains through it will not be achieved. The special train services between Guwahati and New Haflong railway stations were flagged off on August 28. It will initially run twice a week. “The project’s focus is rightly placed on ensuring connectivity and reaping the economic benefits of tourism in Assam. But, it is highly doubtful whether the short distance covered by the proposed train will be able to do either of these,” Gogoi said. “Barak Valley provides for a picturesque landscape, adorned with rich flora and fauna. Sharing its border with Bangladesh, it allows tourists to experience the unique geographical panorama along with the cultural traditions of Assam,” the Congress leader added.

NEW DELHI, SEP 1 (AGENCIES): Congress chief Sonia Gandhi will take a final call on the induction of election strategist Prashant Kishor in the party after a series of meetings with senior leaders, many of whom are opposed to the idea, sources told NDTV today. Kishor, who had a botched stint with Nitish Kumar’s Janata Dal (United), had a series of meetings with the three Gandhis in July, where a role for him in the party was explored in detail. Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi worked with Mr Kishor in the runup to the last Uttar Pradesh elections and sources say they have no objection to his joining the party. But the party’s senior leaders are divided over the recruitment, with some keen, saying it would be good optics for the party. Others say the wild card entry will not make a difference and the Gandhis

Scindia seeks VAT reduction on aviation turbine fuel in MP
BHOPAL, SEP 1 (PTI): U n i o n C iv i l Av i a t i o n M i n i s t e r J y o t i r a d i t ya Scindia on Wednesday demanded a reduction in VAT on the aviation turbine fuel in Madhya Pradesh to attract more flights and improve air connectivity in the state. He was addressing a function virtually from New Delhi for the launch of IndiGo’s Gwalior-Indore flight and re-starting of the Indore-Dubai flight. “I have written a letter to all chief ministers in the country to reduce the Value Added Tax (VAT) on ATF (aviation turbine fuel). There are eight-nine states where it is in the range of one to four per cent, and that has resulted in 15 per cent increase in flights from those states,” the minister said. He said there are different slabs of VAT a p p l i c a b l e o n AT F i n Madhya Pradesh, ranging from four per cent to 25 per cent. “I request the MP government to bring it down to one to four per cent uniformly for the entire state,” Scindia said. The BJP leader further said that in Madhya Pradesh, the VAT is four per cent at Khajuraho, Jabalpur and Gwalior airports while it is 25 per cent at other airports in the state.
Jyotiraditya Scindia
“I request the state government to reduce it in the range of one to four per cent and make it uniform for the entire state for enhancing flight connectivity and introduction of more flights,” he said. “If this happens in Madhya Pradesh and the VAT is uniformly applicable, then I will pursue with the aviation companies, whose representatives are present here (during the function), to start more flights from MP,” the minister said. Scindia also requested MP Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan to speed up the allotment of over 2,000 acre land for the expansion of the Indore airport, as demanded by some locals leaders in the state’s industrial hub. has been searching for advisers to help resurrect the party, which had a series of defeats in elections in several states. Kishor’s experience with the Congress, however, has not been satisfactory and in the past, he had criticised the party and its style of functioning. In the 2017 UP assembly elections, the Congress-SP alliance had failed. For Kishor, the only bright spot was Punjab, where the Congress had beaten the Akali-BJP coalition. In May, Kishor remarked that the Congress is a “100-year-old political party and they have their ways of functioning”. “They are not open to working on the ways suggested by people like Prashant Kishor or others. They won’t be open to working with my style of functioning,” he had said, adding that the Congress “must realise that it has a problem and then do something about it”.
Pradhan reviews reopening of schools across country NEW DELHI, SEP 1 (PTI): Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan held a meeting with senior ministry officials on Wednesday on the status of the reopening of schools across the country and the roadmap for vaccinating their staff. Schools were closed in March last year ahead of a nationwide lockdown to contain the spread of novel coronavirus infection. The Centre had allowed the reopening of schools as per the COVID-19 situation in respective states in October last year. While several states began partial reopening of schools, there was a complete closure again in April this year when an aggressive second wave of COVID-19 hit the country. With the improvement in the COVID-19 situation, several states have begun reopening schools now even as concerns have been expressed over the staff and teachers not being completely vaccinated. The ministry added that the Centre is prioritising vaccination of teaching and non-teaching staff in schools across the country to “ensure a safe environment for reopening of schools”.
Cow should be given fundamental rights: HC
NEW DELHI, SEP 1 ( AG E N C I E S ) : T h e Allahabad High Cour t Wednesday said that the cow is “part and parcel” of India’s culture and should be declared as the national animal. The court made the observation while denying bail to one Javed, who was charged with offences under the Prevention of Cow Slaughter Act in UP. Justice Shekhar Kumar Yadav, while heading a single bench, also said that the government should pass a bill in the Parliament to give fundamental rights to cows. “The work of cow protection is not only of one religious sect, but cow is the culture of India and the work of saving the culture is of every citizen living in the country irrespective of religion,” the court said. According to Bar and Bench, the court in its order also said: “Jab gaaye ka kalyaan hoga, tabhi desh ka kalyaan hoga (only if cow is revered, country will prosper).” The court also remarked that India
is the only country in the world where people of different religions live, who may worship differently, but “their thinking is the same for the country”. Denying bail, the court further said: “In such a situation, when everyone takes a step forward to unite India and support its faith, then some people whose faith and belief are not at all in the interest of the country, they only weaken the country by talking like this in the country. In view of the above circumstances, prima facie offense is proved to be committed against the applicant.” Further remarking that the accused was previously involved in similar acts, the court said that if bail is granted, then it might ‘disturb’ the harmony of the society at large. According to Bar and Bench, the court remarked on the functioning gaushalas in Uttar Pradesh. The court said: “Government gets gau shalas constructed, but the people who have to take care of the cow do not take care of the cows.
LU C K N OW / N O I DA , SEP 1 (PTI): Uttar Pradesh CM Yogi Adityanath on Wednesday ordered an inquiry and strict action against the guilty officials in the Noida Supertech twin towers case. The directives came after the Supreme Court on Tuesday ordered demolition of the 40-storey twin towers that had come up in violation of building byelaws in Supertech’s Emerald Court housing project in Noida’s Sector 93. The top court ordered that the towers be razed within three months for the violation of building norms in “collusion” with district officials, holding that illegal construction has to be dealt with strictly to ensure compliance with the rule of law. The chief minister also directed officials to register criminal cases against the guilty persons, if need be, as he reviewed the matter in Lucknow, an official spokesperson said. “In the case of Noida’s
Yogi Adityanath
Supertech Emerald court case, the orders of the Supreme Cour t should be ensured in letter and spirit. Irregularities in this case have been going on continuously since 2004,” the CM said, according to the spokesperson. “A special inquir y committee should be constituted at the government level and a thorough investigation be done,” Adityanath said. The chief minister’s directives came during the meeting with his special ‘Team-9’ that includes ministers, bureaucrats and the police chief of the state, according to officials. In the wake of the
Supreme Cour t order, Noida Authority CEO Ritu Maheshwari had on Tuesday said that the top court’s directives will be fully complied with, even as the society residents rejoiced at the top court verdict that came after a decade-long legal battle. The realty firm had constructed two 40-storey t owe r s i l l e g a l ly i n i t s Emerald Court housing project premises with over 900 flats and 21 shops. Residents of the housing project claimed their consent was not taken for the twin towers, which were being built in violation of norms and moved the court. The Allahabad High Court had in 2014 ordered the demolition of the twin towers with the Supreme Court upholding the verdict in 2021. However, buyers who have invested their money in these towers hoped their interest would be protected, even as the Supertech Group said it would be filing a review petition in the case.
Modi Govt sold national assets, has no right to rule: Sr Cong leader
JAMMU, SEP 1 (PTI): Launching a scathing attack on the BJP-led government for its national monetisation plan, former Union minister Subodh Kant Sahai on We d n e s d a y s a i d t h e government, which failed to safeguard the national assets, have no right to remain in power. The senior Congress leader said his party considers the government move as an “attack on the national assets and the future of the country” and is promise-bound to fight it alongside other opposition parties, trade union leaders and others. “ T h e g o ve r n m e n t which cannot manage power, telecom, railway, roads, airports, stadiums and gas pipelines has no right to remain in power,”
Sahai, flanked by J&K Pradesh Congress president G A Mir and other senior party leaders, told reporters here. Sahai, who was here as part of the party’s national campaign against the government’s new national monetization plan, alleged that the BJP-led government has put India on “clearance sale” to benefit a few of its “business friends”. “They are selling the national assets built over the past seven decades by the Congress to a few capitalist friends. These assets are not going to come back after being leased out for 30 to 50 years and the next 10 governments will not get any benefit by this move,” he said. He said the government’s claim that it would have the ownership

rights over all these assets is an “eyewash”, he said, adding they are selling property worth over Rs 60 lakh core at Rs 6 lakh crore. “ W hy c a n n o t t h i s government be dubbed as anti-national? Who has
given them the right to sell the national assets?” the Congress leader asked, terming the BJP leaders as “magicians” who are “misleading the public by false statements”. Listing various assets
including highways, power, mine blocks, railways, airports and ports which the gover nment has or planned to sell, the Congress leader said there is no accountability under this government. “Modi has sought 60 months to bring good days to the country. It earned Rs 25 lakh crore by raising the fuel prices but nobody knows where the money has gone as there is no accountability,” he said. He said the policies of the government had rendered the youth jobless and the much-publicised investment of Rs 100 lakh crore annually in 2019, 2020 and 2021 in infrastructure development has only remained on papers as “not a single penny was used”.

Omar asks Union govt whether it considers Taliban a terror organisation
JAMMU, SEP 1 (PTI): A day after India officially talked to the Taliban, former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Omar Abdullah on Wednesday asked the U n i o n g ove r n m e n t t o clarify whether or not it considered the outfit a terror organisation. “Either Taliban is a terror organisation or it is not. Please clarify to us how you (GoI) see the Taliban,” the National Conference vice president told reporters after an Indian representative in Doha met a Taliban leader on Tuesday. This was the first officially acknowledged meeting when Indian Ambassador to Qatar Deepak Mittal met s e n i o r Ta l i b a n l e a d e r Sher Mohammad Abbas Stanekzai and conveyed I n d i a ’s c o n c e r n s t h a t Afghanistan’s soil should not be used for anti-Indian activities and terrorism. “ I s t h e Ta l i b a n a terrorist organisation and if it is not, will you move to the United Nations to delist it as a terror organisation. State neglecting Dimapur airport
D
imapur airport is among the oldest in the region though civil air services started operation since the mid-seventies when certain states in the region such as Mizoram, Manipur and Meghalaya were not air-linked by regular Indian Airlines service. Indian Airlines operated the Fokker Friendship F-27 to Dimapur linking it with Guwahati and Kolkata. Efforts to improve paassengers facilities as well as air connectivity at Dimapur airport were pursued with enthusiasm by the state government during the 90s where the problems used to be deliberated at length with officials of the Airport Authority of India, erstwhile Indian Airlines including civil administration of Dimapur. The ministry of Civil Aviation is not sleeping over improving Dimapur airport to its fullest potential. This newspaper had recently exposed how the state government since 2008 had done precious little to act upon several request letters and meetings for improving Dimapur airport. The government of India, notably the Civil Aviation Ministry has been requesting the government of Nagaland to provide additional land for developing Dimapur airport and make it at par with the best in the region. This is also in view of the fact that there has been increase in number of passengers in this sector. Even as recent as August 27 this year, the newly sworn-in minister of civil aviation Jyotiraditya Scindia has reminded the state government about requirement of land for improving services at Dimapur airport. The Civil Aviation ministry had earlier written several letters for 107 acres required under Phase-I for extension of the present runway by 310 meters. Again under Phase-III some 230 acres is required for side development such as extension of runway by 600 meters strip clearance for AB-320 type aircraft along with hangars, Runway End Safety Area(RESA) and isolation bay. In other states, people willingly sell their lands to the government for development infrastructures. In Nagaland it is just the opposite because people want development but don’t want to give lands. The main problem is the exorbitant rate demanded by some landowners for land compensation. There were a series of meetings and some payments also made to landowners but reportedly others were unmoved. Many other airports in the north east such as Silchar, Aizawl, Tezpur, Lilabari, Rupsi, Shillong, Daporijo etc decades after Dimapur airport became operational for civilian aircraft. Being among the oldest airports in the north east, Dimapur has fallen far behind in every aspect. The government of Nagaland has not been proactive for improving passenger amenities and flight connectivity at Dimapur airport. Dimapur has been and still is, the only airport in Nagaland and also among the oldest in the region. Today other states are being given regular and additional flights and increased connectivity. For example, there are 31 daily flights operating in and out of Guwahati including two international flights(Paro/Bhutan and Singapore) and Bangkok. Imphal airport, is also billed as the second international airport after Guwahati in the north east and also the second most busiest airport after Guwahati. There are nine daily flights to Imphal including an international flight to Mandalay(Myanmar). The volume of passengers travelling by air in Dimapur has certainly grown over the years for tourism or other business purposes. If the government is as sincere as it wants to project its vision documents, it is hoped it will begin the process by improving air, rail and land connectivity.
DailyDevotion Destined To Be Holy
…it is written, “Be holy, for I am holy.” —1 Peter 1:16 We must continually remind ourselves of the purpose of life. We are not destined to happiness, nor to health, but to holiness. Today we have far too many desires and interests, and our lives are being consumed and wasted by them. Many of them may be right, noble, and good, and may later be fulfilled, but in the meantime God must cause their importance to us to decrease. The only thing that truly matters is whether a person will accept the God who will make him holy. At all costs, a person must have the right relationship with God. Do I believe I need to be holy? Do I believe that God can come into me and make me holy? If through your preaching you convince me that I am unholy, I then resent your preaching. The preaching of the gospel awakens an intense resentment because it is designed to reveal my unholiness, but it also awakens an intense yearning and desire within me. God has only one intended destiny for mankind— holiness. His only goal is to produce saints. God is not some eternal blessingmachine for people to use, and He did not come to save us out of pity— He came to save us because He created us to be holy. Atonement through the Cross of Christ means that God can put me back into perfect oneness with Himself through the death of Jesus Christ, without a trace of anything coming between us any longer. Never tolerate, because of sympathy for yourself or for others, any practice that is not in keeping with a holy God. Holiness means absolute purity of your walk before God, the words coming from your mouth, and every thought in your mind— placing every detail of your life under the scrutiny of God Himself. Holiness is not simply what God gives me, but what God has given me that is being exhibited in my life.

NAGALAND POST, DIMAPUR THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 2, 2021
S
Social media impact on our society
everal years back, in his book – “Future Shock”, Alvin Toffler described the information explosion overload and the issues that it would pose to humans. The pace and rapidity with which new technology arrives on our shores is much too fast for mere mortals to assimilate or adjust to. Closer home, social media has just exploded in our midst and we are completely blown away by the very powerful technology that has invaded our lives in every possible manner. Mobile technology has swept through our society. This technology is powerful and not neutral. It has the potential to destroy families, homes, institutions and society as we know it. We have technology which we did not work for and now that we have it, we have to learn to live with it or perish with it. How we handle or mishandle it will determine the shape of our culture. We are all aware of the types of social media platforms that exist such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, WhatsApp, YouTube and several others. The new online social media world has changed how we do business and marketing forever. A lot of businesses have capitalized on it and done very well for themselves. Those who are not with it stand to lose significantly. This is a point of no return. It is a very strong force that creates a flat hierarchy and levelling field in business. My exposure to some social media platforms is
limited. I have however found WhatsApp to be particularly noteworthy of review and interest. How does WhatsApp conversations affect you? • If well disciplined, WhatsApp communications can be very useful and profitable. It is extremely useful to communicate rapidly to another person or to make phone calls free of cost. • Normally conversation works best when one person talks to another individual. The interaction reduces in quality as the numbers increase. When 20 people interact with 20 others in a WhatsApp group, the interaction grossly degenerates. At this point arguments are highly likely and conflict is near. The cacophony increases similar to the chaotic fights we see on National TV • Normally, your local booze joint jokes and curses, household arguments remain confined to that space. In social media, all this is poured out without any regard to dignity. The rebuttals and comments have now created a new normal culture which has us in its bind. • The technology we have at hand is immensely powerful. With great power comes great responsibility. We now have power with no or little responsibility. • Quotes which were earlier listened to with awe have now lost their penetration since they are used so frivolously • Sentences have become abbreviations – FYI, ASAP, CYA, OMG and all kinds which bewilder you. The era of disposables
brings along shortened versions of communication. Brief is not always better. • Good morning messages can be extremely annoying and waste your time and space. Deleting these messages can occupy a significant part of your time. • Happy birthday and greetings messages can be tricky. In case you miss out wishing a person on her special day, you have the potential of being noted. Presenting your attendance is almost mandatory in these groups multiplied ad infinitum. • WhatsApp and social media videos are information inputs that you receive passively. Several people these days receive their only source of information from social media. This has the potential of being highly biased if you are not careful. A large number fail to do their own research by reviewing a variety of positions from multiple sources. This thereby decreases your ability to critically analyse information. The result • We now live in a virtual world and can reduce our contact with the real world. • Our senses get dulled. We fail to appreciate sounds, sights and stimuli from the environment around. • Our normal interactions compounded by COVID masks have become practically non-existent or very superficial • Your mood swings depending upon the number of likes or dislikes you acquire in your social media status. This is very fragile and can create much identity crisis.
You feel good when you are appreciated and down when criticized. You live under the tyranny of people’s expectations. • You play to the audience you garner. In the process you become a slave of your audience. • Constant obsession with checking out your chats can cause you to become addicted and develop the FOMO – fear of missing out syndrome. This displaces other useful activities because there are only 24 hours in a day. • Giving constant attention to your phone in the middle of a meeting, in church or conversation can be very distracting to the speaker or the other person. This could even be misconstrued as an insult and disrespectful to the other person. • Artificial intelligence that is built into search engines of social media will bombard you with the type of topics you choose to search. For example – if you are an antivaxxer, you are likely to be continuously instigated to see several videos on the same theme. This has the result of brain washing you on the subject so that you develop a one sided framework of thinking. • A lot of students and employees of organizations today get expelled or fired from their jobs due to some innocent item they posted in their social media pages. They realise and regret too late. The issue of social media allegations on medical fraternity and the impact of that • Break in trust between
the medical fraternity and people – breakage of the doctor patient relationship is extremely harmful since, if patients do not trust doctors, they will not come to them when they need help and suffer as a result. • Patients will not take the medicines or treatment from one doctor and will continue to seek for second and third opinion, thereby causing more confusion, doubt and delay in their treatment. • In an emergency, they will not go to the hospital and therefore might have disastrous consequences • It labels all doctors as crooks who are out to loot and cheat the public • Most of the times, the facts are not well represented and it is usually one sided. • It makes the interaction very strained because, doctors will now regard every patient as a potential accuser and that would affect his clinical judgment in an already difficult and complex diagnostic situation. This would actually be harmful for the patient who cannot get the best of the doctor who is unduly concerned about what the patient is likely to do next on social media. The ramifications of this culture is terrible – next step would be • Accusing of anybody you do not like in public social media. • Counteraccusation and rebuttals which waste everybody’s time – it would be mutual assured destruction or MAD. Social media challenges are here to stay. If our
society continues to take it passively, we will go down a slippery slope into anarchy like Gotham City. How can we develop a process to address this issue? There must a reflective process to understand what is happening to us and how we can meaningfully relate to this issue. This cannot be done by the classical method of preaching from the pulpit alone. Some suggestions for small group discussions 1. In small groups – discuss and reflect on the WhatsApp conversations that took place in the last week. How did it affect you? How has your outlook changed as a result? 2. Review one WhatsApp or short YouTube video on some current topic. Discuss across the group how you feel about the video content and what processes went into your mind as you saw it. 3. Maintain a diary of events that took place in your groups this week. What did you see happening to you as you wrote your observations of yourself. 4. Do a role play of a particular WhatsApp conversation in your WhatsApp group. Think aloud of what thoughts went in your mind as you went through each comment. 5. What are the likely ramifications and result of some of the explosive WhatsApp video or posts that took place in your group this week? What are the short and long term impact of these posts? Oil palm in the North East: can we do it better? NSF on RN Ravi’s statement Is there a sustainable way to do oil palm, and can we build the right incentives for it? The National Mission on Edible Oils – Oil Palm was introduced on 18th August by the cabinet, aiming to reduce overall national dependence on oil palm imports by increasing local cultivation. The mission specifically focuses on the North East, encouraging farmers to cultivate oil palm through an INR 11,000+ crs in support. The has ignited an animated debate about the prospects of oil palm, particularly for the ecology in the region. Oil palm globally has a long history of ecological and social devastation in South East Asian countries such as Malaysia and Indonesia. In West Africa, oil palm plantations were ground zero for the emergence of Ebola as fruit bats from nearby forests were brought into increasing contact with people. Previous attempts at rollouts in India have had limited buy-in, with farmers pointing to the long maturation period as a deterrent in an already financially and economically stressed profession. The economic, social and ecological implications of oil palm in the North East Compared to other endemic cash crops such as bamboo, oil palm has a much lower benefit-cost ratio, higher input costs and maturation period, and offers few ecological benefits. The table below compares the figures:
East. Climate projections by ICIMOD show the North East will lose more water than it receives through rainfall over the next decade, while groundwater continues to deplete (each state loses an estimated 5000 m3 annually). The North East’s high rainfed agriculture dependence will lead to increased water stress and climate vulnerability: an oil palm tree requires 150-350 litres of water daily. Meanwhile, processing oil palm generates 2.5t of effluent for every tonne processed and will pollute already at-risk water systems. Farmers across India report incurring losses of up to 7 lakh while waiting for oil palm to mature. In a region of 80% marginal farmers, such losses will further income insecurity, indebtedness and entrench marginalization. The subsidy push risks food crops being replaced with oil palm: the North East is already facing a nutritional crisis, with childhood stunting on the rise in 5 states as per the NFHS-5. Early attempts under Mizoram’s Land Use Policy disenfranchised women, as collective jhum lands were privatized and control was transferred to men, leading to loss of livelihoods and decision-making. Ecologically, oil palm deforestation will compound climate vulnerability; lead to increased human-wildlife conflicts with species such as Asian Elephants, leopards and tigers; while accelerating the economic vulnerability of forest-fringe

As a non-native species to this agroclimactic zone, oil palm requires far more inputs to thrive compare to endemic species: from water to pesticides, driving up overheads and risks for farmers. Over 12.75% of the North East’s land is desertified, rising to as high as 40% in states like Nagaland. Chemical intensive cultivation will only accelerate this, as will its cultivation on the slope terrain of the North

communities. It will risk our global net zero goals and India’s commitments to create a 3 GtCO2e carbon sink under the Paris Agreement. Oil palm in SEA has net emissions of 174t/ha owing to clearance and cultivation practices. In both Malaysia and West Africa, these plantations have become disease vectors: Ebola in West Africa, malaria and dengue through increase mosquito populations
in Malaysia. New pests introduced through these non-native species will likely create further disease risks. A climate-smart, futureoriented approach The next 5-15 years are make or break for the NER’s climate longevity. Long-term earning & jobs through sustainable agriculture must take centre stage, to build the resilience of local markets through bamboo, rattan & sustainable timber. A full boost to the NER economy for agroforestry and forest rewilding will generate INR 84,000 crores from year 3 onwards and reach INR 450,544 crores at a 30 year maturation period, creating jobs for 2 million households. Endemic species such as the lucrative bamboo must be encouraged, supported by science-driven, climate-informed policies. Policies need to be streamlined to support commercial growth on farmlands, as well as to invest in agro-climactic studies of species for informed recommendations and science-driven support systems for farmers. Sustainable, organic oil palm agroforestry experiments in Brazil led to yields of 180 kg per plant, against 139 kg per plant in chemical-fed monocultures. Combined with staple food crops and other endemic cash crops, Brazilian farmers minimized financial and food security risks while maximizing income gains. The model offers a possible template for sustainable rollout in the NER. Oil palm alternatives that are endemic to the country such as coconut oil, sunflower and black seed should be encouraged and incentivized: especially as consumers move away from palm oil because of cholesterol concerns. Strengthening rural communities will be the key to unlocking our natural capital for a resilient climate and ecological future. The North East is easily the richest geography in India, when we account for the natural capital held in its rich, diverse forests and landscapes. Our ecology is our economy. For our rural communities, we must work to build a Naturenomics™ future of interdependence and thriving ecological civilizations. By Ranjit Barthakur & Joanna Dawson, Balipara Foundation
1) The Naga Students’ federation distressed at the shallow attempt by the Governor of Nagaland and GOI appointed interlocutor for Indo-Naga political negotiation, Shri. R N Ravi to distort the historical truth of by stating that ‘In the autumn of their rule, when the British conspired to partition India and give away northeast India to Pakistan, the leaders of Naga Hills stood in solidarity with the rest of the country and thwarted the diabolical colonial conspiracy. Naga leaders played significant roles in the constitutional evolution of India,” 2) His continued glorification of the NPC and the 16th Point charter of demands which had long been disowned by the Naga people through his various acts of patronizing its founders and leaders is another matter of great concern to the Naga youth and students. 3) The Naga youths and students are fed up of his rhetoric with the intent to divide the Naga people. The Governor’s claims and successive misadventures only reveals his shallow understanding of the Naga history and also the narrow walls within which he has been trying to solve the vexed Indo-Naga Political issue. Further, it undermines and belittles the very people he has been assigned to have a political dialogue in-order to pave the way for lasting peace and tranquillity all over the Naga homeland. The
federation reiterates that such a divisive mind at the helm of affairs from the Indian side in the political negotiation, the current peace process becomes doubtful to be enduring. 4) The Federation wants to set the record straight that the Naga people declared their Independence on 14th August 1947 and the same was ratified through a Naga National plebiscite in 1951. It is historically clear that the Naga homeland came to be a part of the existing Indian union neither by consent nor by conquest. The Naga people’s assertion for self-determination is in line with the inherent ethos, values and customary systems of the Naga society and not otherwise. More so, it is the policies of the GOI and their attempts to muzzle the voices of Naga people through militarization that is causing much harm to the Naga society. 5) In conclusion, the federation appeals to interlocutor to rise up from his self-induced slumber by hold his tongue and action in the interest peaceful co-existence between the Naga people and our neighbours. More so, he should refrain from furthering the old ‘carrot and stick’ policy and adopt a more pragmatic approach in-order to ensure that the interests of the two entities are upheld through the political solution. Sir,
On poor internet connectivity
As we all are very much well aware of the fact that the impact of COVID-19 to education system have compromised with online classes and even online exam yet it is saddened to have been going through bad internet connectivity in Lengrijan, Dimapur for couple of days now. Let this be mentioned that, not all are blessed with 2, 3 service provider and recharging all of which. Yet, it is not only the students that are on the losing end but even the teachers who are scheduled to undertake Online Classes to the students thereby thousands of students are compelled to miss the Class. Why should the students be denied of their rights at the expense of our negligence? Ain’t it the responsibility of the elders to be notified and the concern to restore? Therefore, through this column I would like to draw the attention of Jio Telecom, Dimapur to restore its network in Lengrijan colony, Dimapur at the earliest and to ensure that such lousy network be averted even in the days to come with your swift response. VVPATs stuck, need them Rain inundates Delhi, highest in Sept in 19 yrs EVMS, for upcoming polls, EC tells SC
NEW DELHI, SEP 1 (PTI): Delhi recorded 112.1 mm rainfall in 24 hours ending at 8:30 am on Wednesday, the highest single-day precipitation in September in 19 years, according to India Meteorological Department (IMD). The capital had recorded 126.8 mm rainfall on September 13, 2002. The all-time record is 172.6 mm rainfall on September 16, 1963. The heavy burst of rain submerged several areas, including the diplomatic enclave of Chanakyapuri, in knee-deep water and affected traffic movement in parts of the city. The city gauged 75.6 mm rainfall in just three hours starting 8:30 am. This means that Delhi has already recorded more than the monthly quota of rain on the first two days of the month. On an average, the capital gauges 125.1 mm precipitation in September every year, according to

the IMD. Asked if the IMD ex p e c t e d s u c h h e av y rainfall -- 187.1 mm since 8:30 am on Tuesday, an official said it is difficult to make “precise predictions” for a small area like Delhi t wo t o t h r e e d ay s i n advance. “The predictions are for larger areas, say like Haryana and Punjab. This applies across the world,” he said. Mahesh Palawat, Vice President, Skymet Weather, a private forecasting agency,
said the monsoon pattern is changing due to climate change. “The number of rainy days has reduced over the last four to five years, and there has been an increase in extreme weather events,” he said “ We h a v e b e e n recording short and intense bouts of rains, sometimes around 100 mm rainfall in just 24 hours. In the past, this much precipitation would occur over a period of 10 to 15 days,” he said. Officials at the
India Meteorological Department said the Safdarjung Observatory, considered the official marker for the city, gauged 112.1 mm rainfall in the 24 hours ending 8:30 am on Wednesday, the highest on a day in September in 19 years. The weather stations at Lodhi Road, Ridge, Palam and Ayanagar recorded 120.2 mm, 81.6 mm, 71.1 mm and 68.2 mm rainfall, respectively, in the 24 hours ending 8:30 am. Since 8:30 am, Palam, Lodi Road, Ridge and Ayanagar have recorded 78.2mm, 75.4mm, 50mm and 44.8mm rainfall, respectively, it said. On Tuesday, Delhi gauged 84 mm rainfall in just six hours -- between 8:30 am and 2:30 pm -- that flooded roads and led to massive traffic snarls on key stretches such as ITO, Ring Road near IP Estate flyover, Dhaula Kuan, and Rohtak road. “The intensity is likely to reduce. Another
spell of rain is likely from September 7,” an IMD official said. In its forecast for the month of September, the IMD said, “Normal to below normal rainfall is most likely over many areas of northwest.” The Delhi Traffic Police issued an advisory against traffic obstruction at Mother Teresa Crescent Marg, Mayapuri Chowk, Ghitorni Metro Station to MG Road and Adchini towards Kishangarh due to the heavy waterlogging. Weather experts said such spells of rain do not help recharge groundwater and lead to flooding in lowlying areas. The water percolates in the ground if it rains slowly over four to five days. In case of heavy falls, the rainwater runs off quickly, Palawat said. “The rain washes away pollutants, but since the number of rainy days has reduced, the average annual air quality is also getting affected,” he said.
NEW DELHI, SEP 1 (IANS): The Election Commission on Wednesday urged the Supreme Court to grant urgent hearing on its plea alleging EVMs and VVPAT machines used in polls of six states are currently stuck and cannot be used for future elections. Senior advocate Vikas Singh, representing the poll panel, submitted a large number of EVMs and VVPAT machines are still being preserved and need to be released. Submitting that they are preserved due to an order extending the limitation period for filing pleas, which includes election petitions, the poll body sought that a timeline be fixed for filing election petitions in connection with polls held in Assam, Kerala, Delhi, Puducherry, Tamil Nadu, and West Bengal. “We have to maintain these EVMs and VVPAT machines and hearing is necessary as elections in states like Uttar Pradesh,
Uttarakhand, and Punjab are coming up,” Singh said. At this, a bench headed by Chief Justice N.V. Ramana and comprising Justices Surya Kant and A.S. Bopanna, said: “Alright, we will fix it next week.” The top court on April 27, taking into account the onset of second Covid wave, had relaxed the statutory period for filing petitions, including the election petitions, under the Representation of the People Act, 1951. “As a result of the aforementioned statutory p r o v i s i o n s / r u l e s, t h e relevant instructions issued by the Election Commission
of India and the Order dated April 27, 2021 passed by this Hon’ble Court, the Election Commission of India is unable to use a substantial number of EVMs,” said the EC’s plea. The plea further added that it is a cause for concern as the poll body is scheduled t o c o n d u c t A s s e m b ly elections in states like Goa, Manipur, Uttarakhand, Punjab, and Uttar Pradesh next year. “All the EVMs and VVPATs belonging to the Election Commission of India that were used in recently held Assembly Elections are blocked and cannot be used in future/ upcoming elections,” it said.

the spread of the virus, they added. Officials said the coastal state, which is a popular holiday destination, urgently needs to apply stricter measures in containment zones and restrict movement. Kerala’s weekly positivity rate remains at 14-19 per cent and it is bound to spill over to its neighbours, officials stressed. Karnataka has already announced seven-day mandatory institutional quarantine for those arriving from Kerala. The southern state - that earlier drew applause for its handling of the pandemic - recorded over 30,000 fresh cases in the last 24 hours, while India’s tally was 41,965. The state has been reporting more than 10,000 new cases every day for more than a month even as other states witnessed a drop.

NEW DELHI, SEP 1 (AGENCIES): With over 85 per cent Covid patients in Kerala isolated at home, the state needs to step up measures to curb the daily surge, Union Health Ministry sources said today, stressing on a “smart and strategic lockdown”. Kerala has not been following the Centre’s advice while reporting the highest daily cases in the country, officials insisted, adding that neighbouring states are feeling the impact. Highlighting the importance of micro-containment zones, government sources said Kerala needs to follow curbs, not just at the district level, and penetrate deeper to focus on affected neighbourhoods. Patients recovering at home are not following all safety rules and this is why Kerala is not able to contain

Once completed, there will be no shortage of electricity for the next 100 years in West Bengal and will also be cheap,” she said. said the other important projects of the state are the Tajpur port, where an EoI has already been prepared, and the dedicated freight corridor from Dankuni to Amritsar via Raghunathpur in Purulia. “This corridor will attract Rs 72,000 crore investment and provide lakhs of employment. Similar sequences that are also being classified as AY.12 at low stringency do not have the same epidemiological significance, the INSACOG said. However, there was no word on the new variant of SARS-CoV-2, the virus which causes COVID-19, that has been detected in
South Africa and many other countries globally which could be more transmissible and evade protection provided by vaccines. Scientists from National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD) and the KwaZuluNatal Research Innovation and Sequencing Platform (KRISP) in South Africa said the potential variant of interest, C.1.2, was first detected in the country in May this year. C.1.2 has since been found in China, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Mauritius, England, New Zealand, Portugal and Switzerland as of August 13, they said. The INSACOG said

This will also help the farmers to raise their income levels”, she said. Many industries will come up for this and it has the potential to provide 48,000 jobs involving an investment of Rs 15,000 crore. Regarding IT, she said the government is coming up with a data policy. “The government will help in data handling and storage. 24,000 jobs will be created and there will be an investment of Rs 20,000 crore. The greenfield airport at Andal will be made an international one and the state government had also provided Rs 150 crore in the budget for this. saw an increased response to proteins from MMR and Tdap, which they had been using as controls. This was observed with both COVID-19 convalescent and uninfected individuals vaccinated against SARS-CoV-2, they said. The researchers also performed a retrospective cohort study using data from more than 75,000 patients in Ohio or Florida who had tested positive for COVID-19 between March 8, 2020, and March 31, 2021. They found that pa-

Similarly, patients previously vaccinated for Tdap had 23 per cent and 20 per cent decreased rates, respectively, of these outcomes, according to the study.

NEW DELHI, SEP 1 (PTI): Royal Enfield on Wednesday said it has launched an all new version of Classic 350 motorcycle in the country with price starting at Rs 1.84 lakh (ex-showroom Chennai). In 12 years and more than three million motorcycles later, the Classic has built a legacy of its own, and the new Classic 350 is all set to take this legacy ahead, the company, which is a part of Eicher Motors, noted. “The Classic 350 launched in 2008, was a modern and capable motorcycle that symbolized the timeless post-war styling from the heydays of the British motorcycle industry.” “Its captivating design language and simplicity coupled with dependabil-

robust external demand, which risks slowing given the increasing Covid cases globally. Additionally, surging freight costs and container shortages amid logistic bottlenecks pose downside risks to growth. So may be the pressure of lower agricultural yield this year in the wake of projections of lower than normal monsoon. Morgan Stanley research has maintained its estimate of GDP growth at 10.5 per cent for F2022. “We expect economic activity to start normalising from quarter ending (QE) September, supported by pent-up demand, ramp-up of the vaccination drive, favourable policy mix, and
growth has seen in ‘financing, insurance, real estate & bus Services’ but ‘trade, hotels, transportation’ and ‘Public administration and Defence’ has contracted significantly on a Q-o-Q basis, the SBI Ecowrap report said. On the expenditure side, due to base effects the y-o-y growth in Q1 FY22 private final consumption expenditure has been at a record 19.3 per cent. However, when we look at the Q-o-Q metrics, there is a degrowth of 17.4 per cent. And if we compare with Q1 FY20, the degrowth is 11.9 per cent. “Thus, the recovery has not happened as Indian households faced the brunt of the second wave in Q1. Another troubling aspect to the consumption story is that the Government Expenditure, which grew by 12.7 per cent in real terms in Q1FY21, has displayed degrowth of 4.8 per cent Y-o-Y and -7.6 per cent Qo-Q. Government support to consumption expenditure declined despite the second wave,” the report said.

Baroda economic research, GDP is expected to grow at 9.7 per cent in FY22. The improving pace of vaccinations, government tax collections, exports and corporate investments in select sectors are a tailwind for growth, it has said. Taking a similar line, a report by Kotak Institutional Equities expects GDP growth of 9 per cent in FY22 against RBI’s own projections of 9.5 per cent growth. But the brokerage has cautioned that growth momentum may get disrupted if a third wave of the pandemic comes before a larger population gets fully vaccinated. Furthermore, one of the key drivers of growth in CYTD21 has been
robust global growth. We expect GDP growth to move into positive territory on a two-year CAGR basis from QE September,” it said in its report cautioning that slowdown in the pace of vaccinations, trend in Covid-19 cases and restrictions on activity poses risks to smooth recovery of the economy. An SBI Ecowrap report had brought more realistic picture of the Indian recovery suggesting that the second wave has still put a lot of sectors on path of degrowth in Q1 compared sequentially with previous quarter (Q4FY21). Industry, which was the worst affected sector during the pandemic, rebounded sharply in Q1 FY22 (grew by 46.6 per cent) due to 49.6 per cent growth in Manufacturing and 68.3 per cent growth in construction. However, much of the growth is due to the low base in Q1 FY21. Services sector exhibited a YoY growth of 11.4 per cent, however, on a Q-o-Q basis the sector contracted by 11.8 per cent. Though, the

NEW DELHI, SEP 1 (IANS): The high GDP growth despite low base of last year has given confidence that the Indian economy may well grow over 9 per cent in FY22 with tailwinds coming from rapid recovery of manufacturing and construction sectors. The data released by the Union Ministry of Statistics on Tuesday showed that the country’s GDP has recovered swiftly to clock a growth of 20.1 per cent in the April-June quarter of FY22 as against a contraction of 24.4 per cent seen in the same period of previous year. There has been a 49.6 per cent growth in Manufacturing and 68.3 per cent growth in construction. However, much of the growth is due to the low base in Q1 FY21. Though the Q1 growth is a tad lower than RBI’s expectation of 21.4 per cent growth, it is still on course to make a good recovery taking the economy back to its preCovid size. According to a Bank of

Black particles found in Moderna vaccine in Japan TOKYO, SEP 1 (IANS): Japan has put on hold a batch of Moderna’s Covid-19 vaccine after a pharmacist saw several black particles in one vial of the vaccine. The pharmacist saw some foreign substance in one vial of the vaccine in Kanagawa Prefecture while checking it before use, according to authorities. Some 3,790 people had already received shots from the batch. The rest of the batch has now been put on hold, reports the BBC. Earlier, Japan suspended the use of about 1.63 million Moderna doses due to contamination. Takeda Pharmaceutical, which sells and distributes the vaccine in Japan, had last week put three batches of the vaccine on hold after “foreign materials” were found in some doses. Japan’s Health Minister Norihisa Tamura on Tuesday said that the foreign matter found in Moderna Inc Covid-19 vaccines in the southern prefecture of Okinawa were caused likely when needles where stuck into the vials.

Vladimir Putin
MOSCOW, SEP 1 (AP): Russian President Vladimir Putin has criticized the United States’ involvement in Afghanistan, charging that its 20-year-long military presence in the country has achieved “zero.” Putin said Wednesday that for 20 years, the U.S. military in Afghanistan “was trying ... to civilize the people who live there, to introduce their norms and standards of life in the broadest sense of the word, including the political organization of society.” “The result is sheer tragedies, sheer losses, both for those who were doing that - the US - and more so for the people who live in Afghanistan. A zero result, if not negative,” Putin said. The Russian president added that “it’s impossible to impose something from outside” and that “if someone does something to someone, they should draw on the history, the culture, the life philosophy of these people in the broadest sense of the word, they should treat their traditions with respect.” Moscow, which fought a 10-year war in Afghanistan that ended with the Soviet troops’ withdrawal in 1989, has made a diplomatic comeback in the country as a mediator over the past few years.
Pak minister says they are ‘custodians of Taliban’ NEW DELHI, SEP 1 (AGENCIES): The Pakistan government on Wednesday called itself a “custodian” of Taliban leaders and accepted that Islamabad provided shelter and education to the Taliban insurgents in its country. On a TV show, Pakistan interior minister Sheikh Rashid has openly accepted that Imran Khan-led Pakistan government has done everything for Taliban leaders, who are back in power in Afghanistan after 20 years. “We are custodian of Taliban leaders. We have taken care of them for long. They got shelter, education and home in Pakistan. We have done everything for them,” Rashid said while speaking on Hum News programme ‘Breaking Point with Malick’. Earlier, CNN-News18 had confirmed the Pakistan ISI’s heavy involvement in the deliberations between the Taliban and the Pakistan government. Exclusive photos accessed by CNN-News18 showed ISI Chief Hameed Faiz meeting top Taliban leaders in Kandahar. CNN-News18 had previously reported that Pakistan is set to play a major role in the formation of a new government in Kabul. Hameed Faiz, with Taliban leader Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar and other leaders, was seen carrying out Namaz prayers in Kandahar, before Baradar’s departure to Kabul on Saturday. Before that, Foreign Minis-
ter Shah Mehmood Qureshi had said that Pakistan is determined to play a “positive role” in Afghanistan as he appealed to the Taliban insurgents and former rulers of the war-ravaged country to formulate an all-inclusive political government after mutual consultations. Our envoy in Afghanistan is also in touch with different Afghan personalities, he had said in a statement. Moreover, Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan had once called Taliban “normal civilians”, not military outfits, and asked how the country is supposed to hunt them down when it has three million Afghan refugees at the border. In an interview with PBS NewsHour, Khan stressed that Pakistan hosts three million Afghan refugees of which the majority are Pashtuns, the same ethnic group as the Taliban fighters. “Now, there are camps of 500,000 people; there are camps of 100,000 people. And Taliban are not some military outfits, they are normal civilians. And if there are some civilians in these camps, how is Pakistan supposed to hunt these people down? How can you call them sanctuaries?” he had argued. When asked about alleged Taliban safe havens in Pakistan, the Prime Minister responded: “Where are these safe-havens? There are three million refugees in Pakistan who are the same ethnic group as the Taliban…”
Taliban, Panjshir resistance locked in fierce fighting
IANS: Fighting is going on between Taliban fighters and the forces of a resistance front lead by Ahmad Massoud in the Panjshir province of Afghanistan. The Taliban confirmed that the fighting has been ongoing for two days and both sides have suffered casualties, Tolo News reported. “Mujahideen of the Islamic Emirate were attacked from some circles in Panjshir who bluff and say they will resist. The Mujahideen reacted to the attack and as a result the other side has suffered heavy casualties,” said Anaamullah Samangani, a member of the Taliban’s cultural commission. Residents at the front lines in the Nasaji-Gulbahar area, which is just outside of Panjshir valley, say the fighting resumed on Tuesday night and is still ongoing. According to locals, most of the people have fled the area, the report said. “The fighting started at 10 pm last night and is still going on,” said Baba Shirin, a resident of the area. Members of the resistance front, meanwhile, said that they have pushed back the Taliban attack on Panjshir and that the Taliban have suffered heavy casualties.
Vietnam PM to visit India at year-end Imran-led govt ‘illegitimate, incompetent’: Maryam NEW DELHI, SEP 1 (PTI): Vietnam’s Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh will visit India at the end of 2021 to discuss with PM Narendra Modi measures to advance bilateral comprehensive strategic partnership, the country’s ambassador, Pham Sanh Chau, said here on Wednesday. This will be his first visit to India since taking charge in April this year. “Vietnam’s Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh is scheduled to pay an official visit to India at the end of 2021 to discuss with PM Modi measures to advance our bilateral comprehensive strategic partnership forward,” the diplomat said at the event. During a telephonic conversation in July, Prime Minister Modi had congratulated Chinh on his appointment as the premier of Vietnam and invited him to undertake an official visit to India at an early suitable date. PM Modi had expressed confidence that the India-Vietnam comprehensive strategic partnership
US envoy Kerry due to talk on climate with Chinese officials BEIJING, SEP 1 (AP): Chinese and US officials plan to talk this week about reducing pollution by the world’s two largest economies — an area of potential cooperation between two governments whose relations are strained on other issues. US climate envoy John Kerry is scheduled for meetings with counterparts from the Chinese Foreign Ministry beginning Wednesday. Relations between Washington and Beijing have been strained by disputes over trade, technology and human rights, but the sides have identified the climate crisis as an area for possible cooperation. The world’s biggest coal user, China obtains roughly 60 per cent of its power from coal and is the world’s biggest source of greenhouse gases. It plans to build more coal-fired power plants but still plans to widely taper its use of the fossil fuel. Beijing has pointed to historical US emissions as a reason to resist action while making advances in solar power and other renewable energy sources. China has set a target of generating 20 per cent of the country’s
ment to address security and socioeconomic concerns in Afghanistan. “If we are starting to put conditions and stopping this engagement, we are going to leave a vacuum, and the question is, who is going to fill this vacuum?,” Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani said in Doha on Tuesday, alongside his German counterpart, Heiko Maas, Al Jazeera reported. The US-allied Gulf Arab state has emerged as a key interlocutor to the Taliban, having hosted the group’s political office since 2013. “We believe that without engagement we cannot reach ... real progress on the security front or on the socioeconomic front,” Sheikh Mohammed said, adding that recognising the Taliban as the government was not a priority. The Qatari foreign minister also warned against any rise of “terrorism” after the US withdrawal and called for an inclusive government, the report said. “It is our role to always urge them (the Taliban) to have an expanded government that includes all parties and not to exclude any party.

total energy consumption from renewables by 2025, becoming carbon-neutral by 2060 and reducing total emissions starting from 2030. President Joe Biden has announced a goal to cut up to 52 per cent of US greenhouse gas emissions by 2030 — double the target set by President Barack Obama in the 2015 Paris climate accord. The 2030 goal vaults the US into the top tier of countries on climate ambition. Kerry has called for stronger efforts to to curb rising temperatures to no more than 1.5 degrees Celsius over pre-industrial levels. He urged China to join the US in urgently cutting carbon emissions. Global decarbonising efforts will come under the spotlight at a UN conference to be held in Glasgow, Scotland, in late November, known as COP26.

will continue to become stronger under Chinh’s able guidance. Minister of State for External Affairs Meenakshi Lekhi and Chau also inaugurated a bust of Vietnam’s founding father and President Ho Chi Minh at Kautilya Marg park in the diplomatic enclave of Chanakyapuri. This is the second bust of Ho Chi Minh in India, the first being in Kolkata. Chau said a bust of Mahatma Gandhi will be inaugurated in Ho Chi Minh city, Vietnam, on the occasion of his 152nd birth anniversary on October 2. The city was named after President Ho Chi Minh in 1975 when Vietnam was unified. “Mahatma Gan-
dhi’s bust will be standing in Tao Dan park, the most open and beautiful park in Ho Chi Minh city. Is this a coincidence? No, this is destiny. A destiny that brought the two great men of mankind together in their thought… that brought the Vietnamese and Indian people together. They have been, continue to be and will always be great friends of each other,” he said. The bust of President Ho Chi Minh will stand forever as a reminder of the depth and the strength of the long-lasting cordial relationship dated more than 2,000 years ago when Buddhism started spreading from India to Vietnam, Chau said. “Uncle Ho wrote over 60 articles, research papers, poems, letters, telegraph messages and speeches about India and his experience with Indian leaders. His in-depth knowledge about India and its people and his close association with the then Indian PM Jawaharlal Nehru has helped cement the VietnamIndia relationship,”he said.

Healthy Aging: Foods That Age You SPICY FOOD
S o m e like it hot... and some can’t take the heat. Spicy food m a k e s yo u r blood vessels swell and even break, leading to purple marks on your face. If you have rosacea -- common in women after menopause -- the heat from spice can trigger a flare-up. It also raises your body temperature, so you sweat to cool back down. When sweat mixes with the bacteria on your skin, it can cause breakouts and blotches.
ALCOHOL
MARGARINE
Your skin is the largest organ in your b o d y, a n d ever ything you eat affects it. Most m a r g a r i n e s, especially the solid kind, h ave t r a n s fats. They raise your ‘bad’ cholesterol, lower your ‘good’ kind, and create inflammation throughout your body. Inflammation is linked to heart disease and stroke, two conditions that can give you an aged appearance.
PROCESSED MEATS
T h o s e margaritas don’t look as good on your skin as they did in the glass. If you’ve ever had cotton mouth in the morning after a night of drinks, you know alcohol dehydrates you. This makes a big impact on your skin, which is 63% water. Even if you drink a big glass of water, it will hydrate all your other organs before your skin. When you don’t get enough, your skin looks and feels dry, and can’t defend itself against wrinkles.
Put down the pepperoni: Processed meats, like bacon, sausage, ham, and deli cuts, are smoked, cured, or salted so they’ll last longer without going bad. It’s what makes them both delicious and dangerous. The sodium and chemical preservatives cause inflammation that can wear your body down inside and out. A little inflammation is good: It helps your cells heal. Too much can cause heart disease, stroke, and diabetes.
CHARRED MEATS
HIGH-FRUCTOSE CORN SYRUP
How this for an acronym? Fr ying or grilling meat at high temps creates a dva n c e d g lyc a t i o n e n d p r o d u c t s, or AGEs. Low levels of AGEs are fine (your own body produces them), but high amounts from charred meats cause inflammation that ‘inflammages’ your body and triggers heart disease and diabetes.
Table s u g a r ’ s chemical cousin, highfructose cor n syr up, sweetens sodas and fruit drinks. Among many other health d r aw b a c k s, it interferes with your body’s ability to use copper, which helps you form the collagen and elastin that keeps your skin healthy. It’s also full of calories and puts you at risk for diabetes and heart disease.
SODAS AND ENERGY DRINKS
T h e more sodas and energy drinks you c o n s u m e, the quicker the cells in your tissues age. In addition to the fizz, they have more calories and added sugar -- 7 to 10 teaspoons in 12 ounces -- than any other beverage. Combined with the bacteria in your mouth, that sugar also forms acid that wears down.
FRIED FOODS
T h e difference b e t w e e n dough and a d o u g h nu t i s a nice long bath in boiling oil. That bath promotes free radicals, or unstable molecules that damage other molecules in your cells and add years to your skin. You can also find free radicals in other fried foods like french fries, hush puppies, and mozzarella sticks.
CAFFEINE
Caffeine is a diuretic: It stimulates your brain and your need to urinate. This can cause dehydration. When you d o n’ t h av e e n o u g h water, your skin stops releasing toxins. The backup makes you more prone to dry skin, psoriasis, and wrinkles.
FROZEN DINNERS
O n e frozen dinner can pack in half the sodium of a healthy daily diet. When you have too much salt, it causes you to drink more than normal and flood your kidneys. Any extra water will move to places in your body that have less salt, like your face and hands. That’s what makes you look puffy.
BAKED GOODS
Just because they’re not fried d o e s n’ t m e a n they look good on you. Baked goods like cookies and cakes are high in artery-clogging fat that put on the pounds. They also don’t skimp on sugar, which can cause diabetes, high blood pressure, and tooth decay (among other things). Inflammation is another reason to skip that sundae. The more inflammation you have, the higher your chances of arthritis, depression, Alzheimer’s, and some cancers.
AGAVE
Though it’s better for your body than artificial sweeteners, agave is 90% f r u c t o s e, a type of sugar that can be broken down only in your liver. When your liver is overworked, it turns fructose to fat and makes more free radicals, the compounds that damage your cells. By: Christine Mikstas, RD, LD

Alcohol When you are hungry, the body tends to absorb whatever you consume at a faster rate. As a result, when you drink alcohol, the absorption will increase and happen twice as fast. Even the alcohol removal process of the body will slow down and it will cause a terrible hangover as well as increase the effects of alcohol on your heart, kidneys, and liver, said Soni. Citrus juices Citrus foods have tough fibre and an acidic base which may cause irritation in your stomach. It can cause gastritis or make you vulnerable to it. She even mentioned that one should avoid exercising on an empty stomach. “Generally, it is thought that exercising or training when you have an empty stomach can result in a lot of calorie burn. However, studies show that fat loss doesn’t occur in that manner,” she said. (IndianExpress)

hat do you do after brushing your teeth every morning? If you are one of those who like to reach out for a cup of coffee right after brushing your teeth, you may like to know that it might be causing digestive issues. Which is why, caffeine is best avoided on an empty stomach. Health researcher Dr Kriti Soni recently shared an Instagram post in which she shared a few things that one should avoid consuming on an empty stomach. “Everything that we do affects our body some way or the other. However, our health is most vulnerable when we have an empty stomach. Our body requires food that it can convert into energy and nutrients within seconds and that’s why it becomes hungry,” she mentioned. Coffee Coffee, even decaffeinated, tends to create stomach acid and can result in heartburn or other digestive issues if consumed on an empty stomach. If you are in the habit of skipping breakfast and having coffee instead, it can result in a decrease in the production of serotonin and keep your mood down all day long. Chewing gum Chewing gum produces digestive acid which can harm the delicate lining of your stomach. If you have too much of gum, then it can lead to gastritis.

match series 1-0 in Dhaka. But it was the bowlers who set up victory with Mustafizur Rahman taking three to dismiss New Zealand for their joint-lowest T20 total -- the same score against Sri Lanka in 2014 at Chattogram -- in 16.5 overs. Skipper Tom Latham and Henry Nicholls scored
18 each while the rest of the batters failed to get into double digits. Spinners Nasum Ahmed, Shakib and pace bowler Mohammad Saifuddin took two wickets each. Mahedi Hasan struck in the first over with debutant Rachin Ravindra out for a golden duck after be-
ing caught and bowled by the off-spinner. Shakib bowled Will Young for five and left-arm spinner Nasum then got two wickets in one over including Colin de Grandhomme, for one, to reduce New Zealand to 9-4. Latham and Nicholls put on 34 runs for the fifth wicket but Saifuddin broke
the stand with the captain’s wicket to rattle New Zealand further. Debutant Cole McConchie was out for nought and Saifuddin sent back Nicholls as the New Zealand batting fell like a pack of cards. Bangladesh, who bowled out Australia for 62 last month to seal the T20 series 4-1 in Dhaka, took down New Zealand for the lowest ever total against them. In reply, Bangladesh lost their openers for just seven with Mohammad Naim falling to McConchie and Liton Das stumped out to Ajaz Patel’s left-arm spin. Ravindra cut short Shakib’s stay at the wicket before Mushfiqur Rahim, who made 16, and skipper Mahmudullah Riyad, who scored 14, took the team home. The second T20 is on Friday with all the matches to be played at the same venue. BRIEF SCORES: New Zealand 60 all out in 16.5 overs (M Rahman 3/13, N Ahmed 2/5, S Hasan 2/10, M Saifuddin 2/7, M Hasan 1/15) vs Bangladesh 62/3 in 15 overs (S Al Hasan 25).
Afghanistan female cricketer dejected by lack of support from ICC
Women’s cricket in Afghanistan is in turmoil. (Reuters)
LONDON, SEP 1 (IANS): Roya Samim, a female cricketer from Afghanistan, has expressed dejection over lack of support for women cricketers in Afghanistan from the Inter national Cricket Council (ICC). She also said that the female cricketers are uncertain about their cricketing future since the Taliban took over the country. “We all emailed the ICC but got no response from them. Why do they not respond to us, why do they not consider us, even treat us that we don’t exist in the world? After the Taliban came into Kabul, we requested that (the ICC) please save all the girls, we are worried for our teammates. The Afghan Cricket Board (ACB) also said noth-
ing, they said just: ‘Wait’,” Samim was quoted as saying by The Guardian on Wednesday. Last week, 77 young athletes and women football team members along with family members and officials were airlifted to Australia after being granted humanitarian visas. Zakia Khudadadi and Hossain Rasouli reached Tokyo to participate in the Paralympics on August 29 after being airlifted from Kabul via Paris. “The Inter national Cricket Council said that, as far as they know, they have not received any emails asking for help. It is believed they are continuing to liaise with the Afghan Board and being guided by them as to the best course
of action, rather than acting unilaterally. The ICC will also continue to monitor the situation in terms of the development of the game in Afghanistan and its role in improving the standing of women. The dismantling of the fledgling women’s team could in theory threaten Afghanistan’s full ICC membership,” further said the report. In November 2020, the Afghanistan Cricket Board had announced 25 central contracts for female cricketers. Now with Taliban in control, women’s cricket and its future is shrouded in uncertainty. “In the last year, it was not so difficult for us. We can have possibilities, we can have matches, we can exercise daily. Before that it was difficult, people would not accept us, the ACB said that we must not go out with the cricket equipment. We had a match planned against Oman. We were waiting, ready for it. For six months, we were training, exercising, all the girls become stronger, day by day. We were ready.” Samim and her two sisters fled Afghanistan two days before Taliban took over the country. All three sisters are cricketers now living in Canada.

You’re treated like a ‘film star’ in India: Dale Steyn NEW DELHI, SEP 1 (IANS): After retiring from international cricket, former South Africa seamer Dale Steyn recalled his ‘film star’ like experience of playing in India. The former great, 38, has played quite a bit of international and Indian Premier League cricket in India. He played his last IPL game for the Virat Kohliled Royal Challengers Bangalore in 2019. In an interview with sacricketmag. com, the South African said, “India is crazy! It’s the closest you’re going to be to feeling like a rock star. You’re treated like a Hollywood or Bollywood star. Cricket is just crazy there. “You go to the airport and you’re bombarded, you go to practice and there are 10,000 people watching. It’s doubtful I’ll ever have that experience in my life again with anything that I do,” he said. He also hailed legendary cricketers Sachin Tendulkar and Ricky Ponting for their ‘amazing’ batting. Camavinga, a teammate of Mbappé at the French national team. Madrid couldn’t persuade Paris Saint-Germain to sell its star despite offers that reportedly surpassed 200 million euros ($236
million). Griezmann, meanwhile, returned to Atlético on a loan deal from cost-cutting Barcelona in negotiations that saw Atlético’s Saul Niguez move to Chelsea and Sevilla’s Luuk de Jong join the Catalan club. The 30-year-old Griezmann returns to Atlético on a one-year loan with the option for another, renewable by either club. He played two seasons with Barcelona, where he never quite found his stride since joining on a fee of 120 million euros ($142 million). He had played five seasons under coach Diego Simeone at Atlético. City rival Madrid had a frustrating end to the transfer window as it couldn’t convince PSG to sell Mbappé. PSG had confirmed last week that Madrid offered about 160 million euros ($189 million) for the 22-year-old forward but it didn’t think it was enough. The Spanish powerhouse reportedly increased its offer again on Tuesday but again without success reaching a deal, meaning it will likely have to wait until the end of the season to add Mbappé to its squad.
LONDON, SEP 1 (IANS): Barring the historic win in 1971 that also won them their first-ever series in England, India have not much hope to draw from their record at The Oval, where they play the fourth Test from Thursday. India have played 13 Test matches and lost five of them. Seven have been drawn. The Oval has one of the best batting pitches in the country and there could be some respite for the Indian batsmen who are struggling to find runs on this tour. The Indian top three have managed to score runs in some innings or the other. However, the Nos. 4, 5 and 6 have been disappointing. Skipper Virat Kohli, who bats at No. 4, is due for a big score and so is No. 5 Ajinkya Rahane and No. 6, the wicketkeeperbatsman Rishabh Pant. The Indian team management, which is insistent on playing five bowlers, may bring in bowling allrounder Shardul Thakur to strengthen the batting in place of Ishant Sharma. There are concerns over left-arm spinner Ravindra Jadeja’s fitness. The team management may

England are bound to see changes as Jos Buttler is out, leaving the wicketkeeping duties to Jonny Bairstow. Moeen Ali has been named vice-captain. However, it will be interesting to see if the home side rests one from James Anderson and Ollie Robinson. Both the newball bowlers have played the first three Tests and have bowled the maximum
number of overs in the series so far. England have Chris Woakes and Mark Wood back in the squad and that allows them to rest one of their new-ball bowlers. Both Woakes and Wood could also play as England may drop Sam Curran, who has been a bit offcolour with the ball. PARALYMPICS: Shuttler Bhagat beats Sarkar
TOKYO, SEP 1 (PTI): World number one shuttler Pramod Bhagat made an impressive start to his campaign in the men’s singles competition but young Palak Kohli endured a tough day at the Tokyo Paralympics, here on Wednesday. Bhagat, the reigning world champion, outwitted fellow Indian Manoj Sarkar 21-10 21-23 21-9 in his men’s singles group A class SL3 opener that lasted 56 minutes. The 33-year-old, who had contracted polio during his childhood, will face Ukraine’s Oleksandr Chyrkov on Thursday. Manoj too will clash with Chyrkov on Friday. “Manoj Sarkar pushed me to the limits. He played really well and we know each other’s game very well. We had some good rallies. I am happy with the way I went ahead with my game, obviously these are initial matches and I am getting used to the arena,” Bhagat said. “I am in a good headspace. Chyrkov is also good and I hope I put up a good show tomorrow.” Earlier, Kohli had a difficult day in office as she suffered defeats in both her

Kohli, whose left arm is under-developed since birth, will next take on Turkey’s Zehra Baglar on
Thursday. Kohli and Bhagat had earlier gone down fighting against second seeds Lucas Mazur and Faustine Noel in the mixed doubles group B opener here. Bhagat and Kohli, competing in SL3-SU5 class, lost 9-21 21-15 19-21 against the French team in 43 minutes at the Yoyogi national stadium. Talking about the
Neuer and Mueller ruled out of Germany’s World Cup qualifier
Manuel Neuer
BERLIN, SEP 1 (AFP): Germany captain Manuel Neuer and forward Thomas Mueller are both injured and ruled out of Thursday’s World Cup qualifier against minnows Liechtenstein. Arsenal goalkeeper Bernd Leno will deputise for Neuer, who sat out training all week with an ankle knock. Coach Hansi Flick is hopeful he will be fit for for their next qualifier against Armenia in Stuttgart. “We assume that ‘Manu’ will be back for Sunday,” Flick said on Wednesday. Neuer’s Bayern Munich team-mate
Mueller is suffering an adductor injury and misses all three Group J games against Liechtenstein, Armenia and Iceland next Wednesday. “Thomas has gone home, the injury made it not possible for him to play in the games,” added Flick. “The risk was too great, so it made sense to send him home.” “We have enough players to replace him.” Borussia Dortmund captain Marco Reus or C h e l s e a f o r wa r d K a i Havertz could deputise. Without Neuer, 35, and Mueller, 31, Germany
lose a decade of experience as the pair have over 200 international appearances between them. Germany have ground to make up in their qualifying group as they sit third, two points behind leaders Armenia. In Neuer’s absence, Flick has still to decide who wears the captain’s armband against Liechtenstein. “I asked myself under the shower who will be captain,” said Flick. “I’ll have a think about it, we have a few options and will clarify it internally.” This will be his first international as Germany head coach. After defeat to England in the last 16 of Euro 2020, Joachim Loew stepped down after 15 years in charge and has been replaced by his assistant coach when Germany won the 2014 World Cup. “I’m looking forward to my first international game and the responsibility for the nation,” added Flick, who wants the same “intensity” from his team as he has seen in training.
match, Bhagat said, “We star ted ver y slow, we had our chances which we didn’t capitalise. Our second game is on Friday which is a do or die game and am sure we will put up a much better fight and make sure we win the game.” The Indian pair found the going tough initially as it lagged 5-11 at the interval. Things didn’t change
Root regains No. 1 spot in Test rankings DUBAI, SEP 1 (IANS): Following some fine performances with the bat in Englands ongoing Test series against India, skipper Joe Root on Wednesday regained the No.1 spot in the ICC Men’s Test player rankings for batting. The England skipper has notched up centuries in all the three Test matches in Nottingham, Lord’s, and Leeds, aggregating 507 runs at an average of 126.75. This golden run sees him overtake New Zealand captain Kane Williamson to return to the top of the charts after six years. Root started the series ranked fifth in the charts, but his form has seen him take massive strides in his charge towards the top spot. Other gainers in the England batting department after their series-levelling victory in Leeds include Jonny Bairstow (five places up to 24th) and Dawid Malan (ranked 88th). From India, Rohit Sharma has been the biggest gainer, overtaking captain Virat Kohli to gain one spot and jump into the top-five batsmen’s rankings.
much after the breather as the French duo zoomed ahead and quickly pocketed the opening game. In the second game, the Indian duo gave a better account of themselves as they fought tooth and nail and earned a slender twopoint lead at 13-11. Mazur and Noel grabbed a point but the Indian pair reeled off seven straight points to reach the game points. Their opponent saved two points before Bhagat and Kohli roared back into the contest. In the decider, the second seeds opened up a 13-9 lead but Bhagat and Kohli fought their way back to take a 15-14 lead. However, Mazur and Noel soon grabbed lead and eventually edged out the Indian pair. Thailand pair of Siripong Teamarrom and Saensupa Nipada is the third team in the group B. Kohli will also be participating in women’s doubles (SL3-SU5) with Parul Parmar. SL3 classification is for athletes with lower limb impairment, while SU5 refers to athletes with upper limb impairment.
Novak Djokovic, Ashleigh Barty enter second round N E W YO R K , S E P 1 ( AG E N C I E S ) : N ova k Djokovic brushed aside the resistance of Holger Rune in Arthur Ashe Stadium on Tuesday night as he defeated teenager by 6-1, 6-7, 6-2, 6-1, to start his charge for a perfect Grand Slam season at US Open. According to Zeenews, the 18-year-old Dane produced some spirited tennis in the second set as he took the second set away from the world number one in a fine fashion. Aside from that second-set heroics, Holger just wasn’t able to capture any chances against Djokovic as the Serbian has now moved six victories from capturing all four Grand Slams in a calendar year. With this win, the Serb, a three-time champion at the US Open, improves to 76-12 lifetime in Flushing Meadows and snaps the 13-match winning streak of the rising Rune in the process. Novak will now face Dutch qualifier Tallon Griekspoor in the second-round clash. Meanwhile, world No. 1, Ashleigh Barty of Australia, extended her winning streak to six with a 6-1, 7-6(7) defeat of Vera

Zvonareva of Russia in the first round of the US Open in one hour and 28 minutes. Fresh off the Cincinnati title and seeking her second Grand Slam trophy of the year after Wimbledon, Barty was flawless against the 2010 finalist in the first set, but needed to battle hard and save one set point to eke out a win in the second. Zvonareva, bidding for her fifth career win against a reigning world No.1 and first since beating Caroline Wozniacki at the 2011 WTA Finals, did not get going until the fag end of the first set. The Russian won just nine points through the first six games to fall behind 1-5, including only three on Barty’s serve. But
Zvonareva forced Barty to save two break points before closing out the opener, and then forced the Wimbledon champion in tough baseline exchanges throughout the second. Competing hard, the 36-year-old twice battled back to level from a break down, and it took Barty’s best tennis to get over the line in the tiebreak. The world No.101 Zvonareva raised her first serve percentage from 65 to 81 per cent in the second set and won six out of eight points at the net. Having been almost unable to return the Barty serve in the first set, Zvonareva began to read its direction and decrease the number of cheap points for the Australian.
‘Sir Alex is like a father for me’: Ronaldo
LONDON, SEP 1 (AGENCIES): Cristiano Ronaldo admits Sir Alex Ferguson is the main reason he has decided to return to Manchester United. Ronaldo posted a gushing message to the club on social media on Tuesday after completing his £19.8million move from Juventus on deadline day, signing off with: ‘PS - Sir Alex, this one is for you…’ In his first interview, the Portugal star went into more depth over his relationship with Ferguson, the manager who brought him over from Sporting Lisbon to launch a glittering career in 2003 and stepped in again last week to ensure Ronaldo joined United ahead of Manchester City. ‘As everybody knows, since I signed at 18, Sir Alex Ferguson was the key,’ he told MUTV. ‘I remember when we played against Manchester when I was at Sporting Lisbon. For me, Sir Alex Ferguson is like a father in football for me. He helped me a lot, he taught me many things, and in my opinion of course he had a big role because the relationship that

we had, we keep in touch all the time, and he’s an unbelievable person. ‘I really like him a lot and he was the main key for me to be in the position that I am, that I signed for Manchester United.’ United made their move after Ronaldo’s agent Jorge Mendes held talks
with City over a shock move to the Etihad. The five-time Ballon d’Or winner will join up with manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and his new team-mates after the international break and is set to make his debut at home to Newcastle a week on Saturday. He said: ‘I think it’s the best decision that I have
made. It’s right on point in my opinion. I moved from Juve now to Manchester, it’s a new chapter, I’m so happy and glad, and I want to carry on again, to make history, to try to help Manchester achieve great results, to win trophies. ‘As you know, I have a fantastic history with this amazing club. I was there at 18-years-old and of course I’m so happy to be back home after 12 years. So I’m really glad and looking forward to start my first game.’ On his relationship with Solskjaer, Ronaldo added: ‘Well, we had a chat, but of course I’m going to have time to speak with him face to face, to know what he expects. ‘As you know, I played with him for two or three years at Manchester United so I have a good relationship with him but now with a different role, I’m a player and he’s a coach. ‘But it doesn’t matter, my relationship with him is great and as I say before, I’m there in Manchester to help the team achieve his results and the coach can count on me for whatever he wants. So I’m available for everything.’
We want to start season with a win: Sunil Chhetri Salute our Paralympians, they NEW DELHI, SEP 1 (AGENCIES): The new season will kick off with neighbours and footballing rivals Nepal and India meeting at Dasharath Stadium, Kathmandu for two back-toback international friendlies on Thursday and Sunday. According to Indian Express, rain followed the Sunil Chhetri-led Indian team when they reached Kathmandu on Monday from New Delhi after a twoweek preparatory camp in Kolkata. The two sides will be facing each other after a gap of six years. The last time they met was in 2015 in Kathmandu in the 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifier play-offs. Only Sunil Chhetri, Pritam Kotal and Gurpreet Singh Sandhu are still in the current squad. India and Nepal have met at least 19 times with the visitors winning 13 times and hosts winning twice while the rest were draws. “Firstly, it (camp) helped us to get back into shape and we gained a lot of technical insights,” said Pronay Halder, the defensive midfielder. “The training

sessions were gaining more info and the gym sessions surely helped us gain more strength.” Striker Rahim Ali and defender Seriton Fernandes are the new faces in the 25-member team. As always, Chhetri w/ill lead the attack with Manvir Singh and Farukh Choudhary while Gurpreet Singh Sandhu is expected to start in goal. For the first time, Indians will miss defender Sandesh Jhingan who moved to Croatian top-tier side Prva
HNL two weeks ago but suffered an injury and is yet to resume training. Others who have been axed from the team include Ashique Kuruniyan, Udanta Singh and Rowllin Borges. “The two international friendlies will help us prepare for the forthcoming SAFF Championship in the Maldives next month…,” national head coach Igor Stimac told the-aiff.com. “We have analysed Nepal as an opponent and the kind of progress they made in the FIFA World Cup qualifiers.
They have put on display that they can play quality football and can defend as a team. My colleague has done a good job and there are a lot of young players in the squad.” It has been raining for the past week in the Himalayan country. “I hope that we don’t suffer heavy rains during the matches so that we can play some exciting football,” Stimac added. About the players from ATK Mohun Bagan and Bengaluru FC who missed the camp, the coach said,
“They have been playing AFC Cup matches for their clubs and are in good physical condition”. Chhetri while thanking hosts All Nepal Football Association and the Government of Nepal for the invitation said, “… the opportunity to play international football is soothing for us. Nepal are a tough opponent but we want to start the season with a win,” said Sunil whose mother is from Nepal. Abdullah Almutairi, national coach of Nepal, said he has been working on “changing the mentality of his players.” “I want to make the players proud rather than being happy. We have been training for the last two months and there are a lot of youngsters in the squad. Our target is to win the SAFF Championship in the Maldives, and eventually qualify for the AFC Asian Cup China 2023 and we don’t care about FIFA Rankings,” said the Kuwaiti who also coached Kyrgyzstan U-16 team apart from clubs in Kuwait and Saudi Arabia.
are like real heroes: Vijender
NEW DELHI, SEP 1 (IANS): Beijing Olympics bronze-medal winner Vijender Singh on Wednesday showered praises on Tokyo Paralympics medallists, saying, “I salute them for their performances despite facing so many problems in life… nothing is impossible for them.” From an Indian point of view, just like the recently concluded 2020 Olympics, the current edition of the Paralympics in Tokyo will never be forgotten. Indians have already registered their best ever performance at a single edition of the Paralympics with the medal haul touching double figures for the first time in history. Delighted with the performance, Vijender told IANS that, “I got to know about their stories. Some faced a lot of troubles but despite all odds, they (Paralympians) came out strong and made India proud. They are real heroes like army men and others. People should learn from them that nothing is impossible.
Vijender Singh “I want to congratulate and salute each of our paraathletes for their achievements. And wish them luck for their prosperous future. I watched how Antil (Sumit) and Jhajharia (Devendra) delivered some brilliant throws (Javelin). Sumit even broke the world records thrice. I was amazed. They are doing so well,” the professional boxer added. So far India have won 10 medals -- Bhavina Patel (Table Tennis) - Silver, Nishad Kumar (High Jump)
- Silver, Avani Lekhara (Shooting) - Gold, Yogesh Kathuniya (Discus Throw) - Silver, Devendra Jhajharia (Javelin Throw) - Silver, Sundar Singh Gurjar (Javelin Throw) - Bronze, Sumit Antil (Javelin Throw) - Gold, Singhraj Adhana (Shooting) - Bronze, Mariyappan Thangavelu (High Jump) - Silver, Sharad Kumar (High Jump) - Bronze -- in Tokyo. With further medal contenders participating in their respective events, hopes are high of more laurels.
