Over `1.34L crore infra projects in NE: FM

GUWAHATI, MAY 29 (PTI): Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Sunday said the Centre is implementing various rail, road and air connectivity projects worth Rs 1,34,200 crore in the North East. Addressing the ‘Natural Allies in Development and Interdependence’ conclave here, she said the Union government has been pumping in huge money in developing a number of infrastructure projects throughout the region. “We are carrying out 20 railway projects worth Rs 74,000 crore for 2,011 km, which are spread across the North East,” Sitharaman said. The Centre is also developing 4,000 km of roads in the region at a total cost of Rs 58,000 crore, she added. “There are 15 ongoing air connectivity projects in the northeast, costing around Rs 2,200 crore,”

Sitharaman said. She, however, did not mention the completion period of these projects. Sitharaman said the number of Indo-Bangladesh Protocol Routes have been increased to 10 from the existing eight. “These Protocol Routes are reviewed every five years. There was a review in May 2022, she said. The Union minister also said work is being carried out to develop the National Waterways on the Ganges, Brahmaputra and

Barak rivers. She said India and Bangladesh have 50 riverine systems, which can be leveraged for all types of transportation purposes as the cost of travel through water is the least compared to air, road and rail networks. “The government is further developing the National Waterways-1 on the Ganges, NW-2 on Brahmaputra and NW-16 on Barak. In the last seven-eight years, we have attempted to provide better connectivity,” Sitharaman said.

“We are building a multimodal hub on the Brahmaputra in Guwahati. This includes a ship repairing port at Pandu, four tourist jetties and 11 floating terminals. All these will bring in wonderful connectivity,” the finance minister said. The Eastern Waterways Connectivity Transport Grid, once completed, will offer seamless connectivity not only between the NE and rest of India but also in the sub-continent, she said. “This will offer 5,000 km of navigable waterways. The Indian government together with the World Bank is offering big connectivity solutions by removing bottlenecks,” Sitharaman said. The central government is also developing several projects focusing on power transmission and distribution, mobile network, 4G and broadband connectivity in the North Eastern region, she said.

JICA projects worth Rs 19,100 cr being implemented in NE

Various projects involving over Rs 19,100 crore of assistance by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) are being implemented in the North-East, an official said on Sunday. Besides its assistance in strengthening infrastructure, JICA is looking at social development projects with a focus on medical infrastructure and enhancing livelihoods, JICA Chief Representative in India Mitsunori Saito said. “We have several projects in various stages of implementation in the NE region. “Some projects have been going on for five-six years, while some are relatively new. There are many projects, like bridges, which take longer (time) to complete,” Saito told PTI.

India headed towards another power crisis in July-August, warns report NEW DELHI, MAY 29 (PTI): A lower pre-monsoon coal stock at thermal power plants in India is suggestive of another power crisis in July-August, independent research organisation CREA has said. The current coal stock stands at 13.5 million tonnes at pithead power stations and 20.7MT cumulatively at all power plants across the country. “The data compiled from official sources suggest that the coal power plants are in no position to address even a minor spike in the power demand and there is a need to plan for coal transportation well in advance,” Centre for Research on Energy and Clean Air’s (CREA) latest report said. The Central Electricity Authority of India (CEA) has predicted a peak power demand of 214 GW in August. In addition, the

average energy demand could also increase to more than what it is in the month of May to 1,33,426 million units (MUs). “The onset of the southwest monsoon will further hamper mining and transportation of coal from mines to power stations... If coal stocks are not replenished to adequate levels before monsoon, the country might be heading towards yet another power crisis in July-August 2022,” CREA said. It also said the recent power crisis in the country was not due to coal production but “distribution and official apathy”. “It is evident from the data that coal transportation and management was not sufficient to keep up with the increased demand from the power sector... The trends show that thermal power stations were not adequately stocked despite ad-

equate coal mining,” it said. India saw a record coal production of 777.26 million tonnes (MT) in the financial year 2021-22 against 716.08 MT in FY21, an increase of 8.54%. The country had a total mineable capacity of over 1,500 MT in FY 21-22 while the total production stood at 777.26 MT, approximately just half of its production capacity. Therefore, if there was a real coal shortage, coal companies had the option of simply increasing the production, Sunil Dahiya, an analyst at CREA, said. “... Coal stock at power stations has been reducing consistently since May 2020, barring a few months in between... The timing is crucial as the monsoon floods coal mines, hampering their production and transport to power stations,” the report stated.

OSTD dismayed by accusations against Dr. Jamir Day after security withdrawn, Cong leader shot dead in Punjab D I M A P U R , M AY 2 9 (NPN): Ongpangkong Senso Telongjem Dimapur (OSTD) said it was deeply disturbed by the recent accusation and allegation against Dr SC Jamir, from Ongpangkong range, by NSCN (I-M) on the Naga political issue through local dailies and social media platforms. OSTD president Imosong Imsong and general secretary Nungshimeren Kichu termed the episode as neither a healthy development nor a good sign about the road ahead for an honourable and acceptable solution. At a time when Naga people desperately longed for a peaceful political solution,

NEW DELHI, MAY 29 (PTI): With 2,828 new Covid-19 infections being recorded in a day, India’s total tally of COVID-19 cases rose to 4,31,53,043, while the active cases increased to 17,087, according to the Union Health Ministry data updated on Sunday. The death toll climbed to 5,24,586 with 14 fresh fatalities. The active cases comprise 0.04 per cent of the total infections, while the national COVID-19 recovery rate was recorded at 98.74 per cent, the ministry said. they declared that NSCN (IM) putting the entire blame for the decades-long vexed Naga problem on Jamir was neither acceptable nor honourable to be taken so lightly. Mentioning that every Naga was a stakeholder in the Naga issue, they asserted that a leader of the stature of Jamir, who was invited by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union home minister Amit Shah, had every right to share his personal opinion on the issue. Hence, OSTD strongly supported and firmly stood by the May 22 statement of Ao Senden. Condemns May 25 incident: OSTD also expressed pain over the tragic demise

of Mapuienla Longkumer, from Ungma village, a student of St Joseph University, on May 25, while condemning the unknown reckless driver for the barbaric act and inhuman behaviour. OSTD said the driver was responsible for the death of the young innocent soul, which should be condemned by all. Urging the competent authority to expedite the process of investigation and apprehend the culprit immediately, they also extended their heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family members and prayed for the departed soul to rest in peace and to grant justice.

CHANDIGARH, MAY 29 (PTI): Famous Punjabi singer and Congress leaders Sidhu Moosewala was shot dead by unidentified assailants in Punjab’s Mansa district, a day after the state government withdrew his security cover. Dy SP (Mansa) Gobinder Singh told PTI that several bullets hit Moosewala, 27, who was in his jeep at village Jawahar Ke when he was attacked. Mansa civil surgeon Dr Ranjeet Rai told reporters that Moosewala was brought dead at the civil hospital. He had fought on the Congress ticket from Mansa assembly seat in the recent assembly election and was

defeated by AAP’s Dr Vijay Singla. Leaders of the Congress and other political leaders expressed shock and anger over the killing of Moosewala and attacked the AAP government for withdrawing his security cover. “The murder of Shri Sidhu Moose Wala, Con-

gress candidate from Punjab & a talented musician, has come as a terrible shock to the Congress party & the entire nation. Our deepest condolences to his family, fans & friends. “We stand united & undeterred, at this time of extreme grief,’’ the Congress party tweeted. “He was showered with bullets in Mansa after @BhagwantMann govt withdrew his security. @ AAPPunjab govt has lost moral authority. It must be DISMISSED (sic),” Punjab Congress chief Amrinder Singh Raja Warring, who played a major role in bringing Sidhu into the Congress fold, said in a tweet. Shub-

hdeep Singh Sidhu, known as Sidhu Moosewala, was among 424 people whose security was withdrawn by Punjab Police on Saturday. CM assures action: Moments after the gruesome murder of singer and Congress leader Sidhu Moosewala in Punjab, chief minister Bhagwant Mann said that he was deeply saddened and shocked by the incident on Sunday. Taking to the microblogging site, Twitter, the Aam Party leader while expressing condolences to the family of the deceased, promised that no miscreants involved in the incident will be spared. cent or lower in most studies. The studies published through July 2021 showed that most SARS-CoV-2 infections were not persistently asymptomatic, and asymptomatic infections were less infectious than symptomatic infections. “If both the proportion and transmissibility of asymptomatic infection are relatively low, people with asymptomatic SARS-CoV-2 infection should account for a smaller proportion of overall transmission than pre-symptomatic individuals,” Diana Buitrago-Garcia of the University of Bern, Switzerland and her team

wrote in the paper. The team included 130 studies, with data on 28,426 people with SARS-CoV-2 across 42 countries, including 11,923 people defined as having asymptomatic infection. An estimated 14-50 per cent of infections were asymptomatic. The results showed that the secondary attack rate - a measure of the risk of transmission of SARS-CoV-2 was about two-thirds lower from people without symptoms than from those with symptoms. “The true proportion of asymptomatic SARSCoV-2 infection is still not known, and it would be mis-

leading to rely on a single number because the 130 studies that we reviewed were so different. People with truly asymptomatic infection are, however, less infectious than those with symptomatic infection,” said co-author Nicola Low from the varsity. However, the team also cautioned that “when SARS-CoV-2 community transmission levels are high, physical distancing measures and mask-wearing need to be sustained to prevent transmission from close contact with people with asymptomatic and pre-symptomatic infection.”

D I M A P U R , M AY 2 9 (NPN): Most states in the north east have marched ahead in terms of economic progress and development through initiatives that have helped propel them forward. A 14-member media delegation from Nagaland recently visited the Himalayan state from May 20 to 27 and were able to learn that the main factor that has prepared the ground for success in tourism is governance model in Sikkim. ticular about enforcing clean environment. Use of plastic has been strictly banned and the state has been successful in tackling plastic wastes. Sikkim is a tiny Hima-

layan state which attained statehood in 1975 whereas Nagaland attained statehood in 1963. Presently, Sikkim is way ahead in comparison

with Nagaland despite being landlocked and lacking the natural resources that Nagaland has been blessed with. Sikkim earns around Rs.1500 crore approximate-

ly each year as tourists flock to visit the famed Zero Point located 15,300 feet above sea level and Kalapathar standing more than 18,000 feet above sea level. Tourism sector in Sikkim is booming and also acts as the main source of income both for the state as well as a vast majority of its citizens. Sikkim is a part of the Eastern Himalaya, notable for its biodiversity, including alpine and subtropical climates, as well as being a host to Kangchenjunga, the highest peak in India and also third highest in the world. Another tourist spot is the Nathu La pass situated 14,450 feet above sea level

that co-joins the state with China. Sikkim is more noted for being the first state to be declared as totally to produce 100% organic farming products. Sikkim is also world famous for its rich floral and faunal diversity including flowering plants, orchids, rhododendron, conifer, bamboo, fern, tree fern, and medicinal plants in high altitude. Though Nagaland has the advantage of rail and air connectivity, as compared to that of Sikkim, yet the former has not been able to exploit these to successfully promote tourist trade over the decades. Open int’l borders in NE for trade, says Assam CM

GUWAHATI, MAY 29 (PTI): Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Sunday called for opening of international borders in the northeast for enhanced trade and tourism links with the neighbouring countries. He pitched for a proper economic policy to achieve the goal, highlighting Assam and northeast India’s advantageous position in ensuring it. Speaking at ‘Natural Allies in Development and Interdependence’ conclave here, Sarma said, “I strongly feel that we can open our borders for peace and prosperity, and by setting up border haats and opening formal trade routes, we can open up new vistas of trade and tourism in the region. The CM pointed out that the north-eastern region is uniquely positioned to facilitate the link between India and South Asia and South East Asia. Besides providing physical connectivity through

Himanta Biswa Sarma at the ‘Natural Allies in Development and Interdependence’ surface and water ways, the northeast also shares ‘cultural alliance’ with its neighbouring countries, he said. “We only need a proper economic policy backed by committed cooperation to set the ball rolling,” he maintained. Sarma also harped on the need for ‘sub-regional cooperation’ for ensuring overall growth and development.

“Commerce, conservation, culture, connectivity, capacity building are central to mutual growth,” he said. Talking about the progress Assam made in recent years, the CM said it is among the top three states in the country in attracting externally aided projects. He added that the state has got five important projects in the last one year, but did not furnish any further detail.

IOC plans to transport fuel to Tripura via Bangladesh GUWAHATI, MAY 29 (PTI): PSU major Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) on Sunday said it is looking to transport fuel to Tripura through Bangladesh as the rail network has been totally snapped due to massive landslides in Assam. After the only rail link connecting Assam’s Dima Hasao district and Barak Valley, Mizoram, Manipur and Tripura with the rest of the country was washed away earlier this month, the company started moving all its supplies by road via Meghalaya, bearing more than double the cost. “After the Dima Hasao landslides, the only way to reach Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura and southern Assam was the road connectivity via Meghalaya. This route is also landslide prone,” Indian Oil Corporation Executive Director (IndianOil-AOD) G Ramesh told PTI. The situation forced the IOC, state governments and the Centre to scout for alternative ways to supply fuel to the southern region of the Northeast, he added. Ramesh said that the IndianOil-AOD, the com-

pany’s North East division, had in 2016 sent a few consignments to Tripura via Bangladesh when the supply was badly hit due to pathetic road conditions in Barak Valley in Assam. “We are trying to revive that six-year-old network as an alternative route. Currently, we are talking to the Bangladesh government through the Centre. We are hopeful that positive news will come soon,” he added. The company is planning to send its convoys of fuel through Dawki in Meghalaya to Bangladesh. It will then re-enter India at Kailashahar in Tripura. Once the discussion is finalised and an agreement is signed, the IndianOilAOD will move its products from primarily Betkuchi depot in Guwahati to Dharmanagar depot in Tripura through the neighbouring nation. “In the first place, we may not send a full convoy. We are looking to send a pilot convoy carrying petrol, diesel and LPG. The pilot consignment may carry 80-120 KL of fuel only,” Ramesh said.

Mizoram logs 22 new COVID-19 cases AIZAWL, MAY 29 (PTI): Mizoram on Sunday reported 22 new COVID-19 cases, eight more than the previous day, with the tally rising to 2,28,291, a health department official said. The death toll remained at 698 as no new fatality due to the infection was reported during the day, he said. Thirteen people recuperated from the infection on Sunday, raising the total number of recoveries to 2,27,439. Assam CM issues notice to minister for apology to ULFA (I)

Himanta Biswa Sarma and Sanjoy Kishan GUWAHATI, MAY 29 (PTI): Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has served a show cause notice on cabinet colleague Sanjoy Kishan for his apology to the banned ULFA (I), which he issued shortly after calling the outfit’s chief a “liar”. Sarma issued the notice to Kishan on Saturday, an official source, who wished not to be named, said on Sunday. “Kishan has been given three days time to respond to the notice. the chief minister has asked Kishan to explain why he had apologised to the ULFA (I),” he told PTI. The source said Kishan, who represents Tinsukia in the state Assembly, had on May 13 termed ULFA (I) chief Paresh Barua a “liar”. The outfit had the next

day released a statement demanding apology from the Tea Tribes and Employment Minister for his remarks and threatened to ensure his “boycott” in Dibrugarh and Tinsukia districts of the state if he failed to do so within 24 hours. ULFA (I) is said to have some clout in these two eastern districts. Kishan had then told reporters that he did not say anything with the intention of “hurting” Barua and if he had done so unknowingly, he sought forgiveness for the same. Soon after this, the ULFA(I) had issued another statement, withdrawing its “boycott” of the BJP leader. The ULFA(I) had declared unilateral ceasefire with the government last year, soon after the Sarma assumed office.

Manipur fuel dealers to observe ‘no purchase’ day on May 31 Countries must coordinate to meet that dealers trading petroleum products are facing immense difficulties due to non-increase of commission/margin. The Rs 2.3 per litre commission which was fixed in 2017 has not been revised till date. The prices of petroleum products have increased twice the prices thereby increasing expenditure burden to dealers. However, there was no hike of dealers’ margin till date. The sudden hike in the prices of the petroleum products is giving a great impact to the dealers and the dealers are also facing immense difficulty in keeping necessary stock of the companies, he said. The convener said that

the reduction in the prices of the petroleum products is a relief to the dealers as it reduced the working capital for the purchase of fuel. However, the sudden reduction of central excise tax on petroleum products had badly hit dealers as it added another burden on them. The hike in the excise duty may benefit the oil marketing companies but dealers have nothing to do with it as they get no benefit, he said. The convener said that the recent sudden drop in prices of petrol and diesel has led petroleum dealers of the state to incur loss of around Rs 1.70 crore. They has also suffered

a loss of around rupees two crore in November 2021 after the government cut fuel prices by a large margin, he claimed. He appealed to the authority concerned to increase the dealers’ commission, which has remained stagnant since 2017. He also reiterated the association’s recent demand put forward to the state government for reimbursement of the loss incurred by sudden drop in fuel price. Mention may be made that the MPDA had, on May 26, warned of different forms of protest if the authority failed to address their demand of reimbursement of the loss incurred by sudden drop in fuel price.

challenges posed by rivers: RK Ranjan

GUWAHATI, MAY 29 (PTI): Union Minister RK Ranjan on Sunday asserted that countries need to look beyond political barriers to work for the mitigation of challenges posed by rivers which flow across international boundaries. He also highlighted the fact that people in the South Asian region directly or indirectly depend on rivers for livelihood. Delivering a special address on the concluding day of the third edition of ‘Natural Allies in Development and Interdependence’ conclave here, the Union MoS for Education and

B’desh MP rues environmental Minority certificates to six religious communities in Assam costs of power projects

Waseqa Ayesha Khan GUWAHATI, MAY 29 (PTI): Bangladesh MP Waseqa Ayesha Khan on Sunday claimed that power projects are implemented with “limited understanding” of social and environmental costs, and stressed on the need to have regional cooperation for energy security. She said that a ‘best practice’ followed in one part of the world may not

be suitable at a different location and called for adapting such models that suit local challenges. Speaking at a ‘Natural Allies in Development and Interdependence’ conclave here, Khan rued that decisions on power sector are very often taken with ‘limited understanding’ and important aspects like social and environmental costs are not taken into consideration. She emphasised on the need for a blueprint on the energy sector in the region and said, “It is essential to have cooperation in the region for energy security.” Khan maintained that harnessing trans-border rivers for various projects can be contentious at times.

GUWAHATI, MAY 29 (PTI): Minority certificates would be provided to six religious communities, including Muslims, in Assam, Health Minister Keshab Mahanta said on Sunday. The state cabinet decided that the minority certificates would be issued to Muslims, Christians, Sikhs, Buddhists, Jains and Parsis and the modalities will be worked out accordingly, Mahanta said at the media briefing after the cabinet meeting here. The cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma also decided to pay a total of Rs 12.63 crore to 1,263 families of workers of the Doloo Tea Estate as a goodwill gesture for their cooperation in the development of the Greenfield airport at Silchar. Each family will be provided Rs one lakh as

compensation for their cooperation, he said. The state government had earlier announced a compensation of Rs 50 crore for the acquisition of the land at Doloo Lalbagh and Mainagarh tea gardens for setting up the greenfield airport and had already released Rs 2.37 crore as the first instalment. The Cabinet also decided to pay Rs 142.50 crore against the outstanding Provident Funds dues of workers of the state-owned Assam Tea Corporation Limited (ATCL), Mahanta said. In the interest of the tea garden workers, the cabinet also approved the rationalisation of valuation and fair compensation for acquisition of land. The zonal value for tea land will be determined on the basis of registered sale deeds of preceding three years in the district with the floor value

being 10 per cent of the nearest agricultural land, he said. The cabinet decided to bring an amendment to the Assam Right to Fair Compensation and Transparency in Land Acquisition, Rehabilitation and Resettlement Rules, 2015 which will equate tea garden lands with those in urban areas to calculate the compensation payable when tea lands are acquired for public purposes. Tea garden workers, both permanent and temporary, will be eligible for receiving 10 per cent of the compensation amount payable to the tea gardens towards acquisition cost of the land, Mahanta said. The Cabinet also decided to bring in an ordinance to enable the extension of tax exemption on green tea leaves for a further period of three years from January

one, 2022. The meeting also decided to give an ex-gratia relief of Rs two lakh each to 288 seriously injured persons and 57 women victimised during the Assam agitation against foreigners between 1979-85 with a total of Rs 6.9 crore to those injured and victimised, Mahanta said. The cabinet also approved the Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) for implementation of the Assam model of Mission Amrit Sarovar which seeks to introduce a source of water for small and marginal farmers and income generating assets by integrating pisciculture and commercial plantation. Altogether, 3007 Amrit Sarovars will be constructed at a cost of Rs 1,208 crore and was scheduled to be completed by August 15, 2023, Mahanta added.

The MPDA convener said dealers who had purchased motor fuels before the tax revision have incurred heavy losses. He said that the sudden drop in price of petrol and diesel by Rs 9.50 and Rs 7 respectively on May 22 has incurred loss of around Rs 1.70 crore to the petroleum dealers of the state. Cong spread communal riots during its rule: Shah Pak drone, carrying magnetic bombs,

NADIAD, MAY 29 (PTI): Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Sunday attacked the Congress, alleging that when it was in power in Gujarat in the past, it worked towards spreading communal riots in the state, making people fight among themselves and damaging the law and order situation. He said that before the BJP came to power and Narendra Modi became the chief minister, Gujarat grappled with communal riots, curfews, and with issues like smuggling of narcotics, arms and RDX through international border. “ Fo r m a n y ye a r s, Congress worked to make communities fight against each other internally, spread communal riots, and tear apart the law and order,” Shah said after inaugurating various police housing projects in parts the state from Nadiad in Kheda district. by the end of this year. During the Congress’s rule, the state used to face curfew for most part of the year, and there was no guarantee that a man would return home in the evening after stepping out for work in the morning. Closure of banks, markets and factories also affected the economy, Shah said. “Communal clash was certain during (Lord Jagannath) Rath Yatra. But after BJP came to power, has

anyone dared to attack the Rath yatra? Those who dared do so are behind bars. BJP under the leadership of Narendra Modi (as CM) started securing Gujarat,” the Union minister said. During the Congress regime, the coastal district of Porbandar had turned into a “playground” for smugglers and mafias, and smuggling of arms, narcotics, fake currency, and RDX through the Kutch border was taking place, he said,

Maneka Gandhi lends support to shunted IAS couple BUDAUN (UP), MAY 28 (PTI): Coming to the defence of the IAS couple shunted out over alleged misuse of a sports stadium in the national capital, BJP leader Maneka Gandhi on Saturday said the transfer of the officials is a “loss to Delhi”. The Centre had on Thursday posted IAS couple Sanjeev Khirwar and Anu Dugga to Ladakh and Arunachal Pradesh, respectively, following media reports about the misuse of facilities at Thyagraj Stadium by them. Khirwar was then posted as Principal Secretary (Revenue) in Delhi. “I know (Sanjeev) Khirwar very well. The allegations against him are false. His transfer is a loss to Delhi,” Gandhi said. “When Khirwar was secretary of environment

department, Delhi benefited from his work. The action against him is completely wrong,” she argued. Commenting further on the matter, the BJP MP from Sultanpur said Ladakh and Arunachal Pradesh are not places for “punishment posting”. “These places also need good officials. People go there happily,” she said. Gandhi was here to meet a former party MLA.

“I am happy to say that as crime manifested in different forms, Gujarat police tackled all the challenges through its policy of remaining two steps ahead of criminals. Even today, the entire country looks at the Gujarat model with surprise,” he said. Shah offered his tributes to more than 35,000 police personnel across the country, who sacrificed their lives, and said this number is higher than the jawans, who attained martyrdom in all the wars fought by India. “Many times, we have heard negative words about the police. But through this programme, I would like to say that India would not have been safe had these 35,000 personnel not sacrificed their lives for their motherland,” he added. He said that while the loss suffered by their family members cannot be compensated, the sacrifice of the police force will remain

JAMMU, MAY 29 (PTI): A Pakistani drone, carrying seven magnetic bombs and as many UBGL grenades, was shot down in Jammu and Kashmir’s Kathua district on Sunday shortly after it crossed into the Indian side from across the International Border, a senior police officer said. The incident occurred ahead of the annual pilgrimage to the Amarnath cave

shrine in south Kashmir Himalayas for which security has been tightened. A police search party picked up the movement of the drone at the border in Talli Hariya Chak area in the morning and fired at it, Additional Director General of Police (ADGP), Jammu, Mukesh Singh said. He said the drone was brought down after being hit by the ground fire.

The bomb disposal squad, called to inspect the drone’s payload, found seven magnetic bombs and an equal number of grenades compatible with Under Barrel Grenade Launchers (UBGL) attached to it, Singh said. The ADGP said police search parties were being regularly sent to the area because of the frequent drone activity from across the border.

India belongs to Dravidians & Adivasis, Govt to release benefits under not Thackeray or Modi, says Owaisi PM CARES for Children today THANE, MAY 29 (PTI): AIMIM president Asaduddin Owaisi has said that “India belongs to Dravidians and Adivasis”, and not to him, or Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray, NCP head Sharad Pawar and Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Addressing a rally in Bhiwandi town here in Maharashtra on Saturday evening, the Lok Sabha member also sought to know why Pawar pleaded with PM Modi for Shiv Sena MP Sanjay Raut and not state NCP minister Nawab Malik, who had been arrested by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in a money laundering case. Coming down heavily on the BJP, Shiv Sena, NCP and Congress, he claimed that these parties want to protect their vote banks and

hence, never react when members of the minority community are targeted. While the BJP and Prime Minister Modi are celebrating eight years of their successful rule in the country, they do not not realise what agony the country is going through, he said, while citing inflation and other issues. “If India belongs to anyone, it’s the Dravidians, adivasis (tribals)” contrary to claims of others, the All

India Majlis-E-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) leader said. “They (other parties) give an example of 600 years, but I give you an example of more than 65,000 years. The country does not belong to Thackeray, Pawar, Owaisi, Modi or Shah, but to Dravidians and Adivasis,” the AIMIM leader said. When anyone criticises CM Thackeray, Pawar, Modi, or Uttar Pradesh CM Yogi Adityanath, they (the respective partymen) react immediately and take action, “but if we are criticised and comments passed against us, no no one reacts”, he said. Owaisi appealed to Muslims and others, including Dalits and OBCs, to understand that these “so called secular parties will never come to their assistance”.

NEW DELHI, MAY 29 (PTI): Prime Minister Narendra Modi will release benefits under the ‘PM CARES for Children’ on Monday via video-conferencing, the Ministry of Women and Child Development said on Sunday. The government had launched the initiative on May 29 last year to support children who lost parents, legal guardian, adoptive parents or surviving parent to COVID-19 from March 11, 2020, to February 28, 2022. In a statement, the ministry said the prime minister will transfer scholarships to school-going children. A PM CARES for Children passbook and health card under Ayushman Bharat – Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana will also be handed over to them, it added. The children, along

with their guardians and the district magistrate concerned, will join the event through virtual mode. The event will be attended by ministers, MPs and MLAs of the respective states and union territories, it said. The objective of the scheme is to ensure comprehensive care and protection of children in a sustained manner by providing them boarding and lodging, empowering them through education and scholarships, equipping them for selfsufficient existence with financial support of Rs 10 lakh on attaining 23 years of age and ensuring their wellbeing through health insurance. The portal “http:// pmcaresforchildren.in/” is a single window system that facilitates approval process and all other assistance for children under the scheme.

NEW DELHI, MAY 29 (PTI): The Opposition on Sunday attacked the Modi government over demonetisation, with former Congress chief Rahul Gandhi saying the only “unfortunate success” of the 2016 move was the “torpedoing” of India’s economy. Taking to Twitter, Gandhi tagged the screenshot of a media report which cited Reserve Bank of India’s annual report to state there was 100 per cent increase in fake Rs 500 notes and 50 per cent increase in counterfeit Rs 2,000 currency notes. “The only unfortunate success of Demonetisation was the TORPEDOING of India’s economy,” he said in a tweet. TMC leader Derek O’brien also slammed the government over the RBI report’s findings. “Namaskar Mr PM @ narendramodi, DEMONETIZATION? Remember? And how @MamataOfficial swiftly took you on ? How you promised the nation Demo would WIPE OUT ALL COUNTERFEIT CURRENCY. Here’s the latest RBI report pointing out the huge increase in counterfeit notes,” he said in a tweet. Shiv Sena MP Priyanka Chaturvedi also took a dig at the Modi government over the RBI report and said “one of the benefits of demonetisation being realised”.

adding, “Today, nobody dares to enter even an inch into the Kutch border.” “The BJP under Narendrabhai Modi started securing Gujarat...and the practice started by him (Modi) is being carried forward by (Chief Minister) Bhupendra Patel and (Home Minister) Harsh Sanghavi,” he added. Shah said that despite being a border state, Gujarat has succeeded in establishing peace. “Nobody has dared to disturb the peace in the state although it has a long coastline and shares border with Pakistan,” he said. Congratulating the government for making Gujarat the number one state in busting narcotics smuggling, Shah also lauded the state police force for remaining two steps ahead in fighting cyber crimes and ably carrying out the tasks related to policing, which he said is becoming challenging by the day.

OPINION/EDITORIAL

Nagaland Post VOL. XXXII NO. 173 DIMAPUR, MONDAY, MAY 30, 2022

I

Sinews of society

n the early decades, since the 50s, Naga political ideology was entrenched as inalienable and therefore un-debatable. There was no second opinion. It was either one either agreed with the aspired destiny or held a contrarian view that could only mean opposition against the ideology. And disagreeing with that meant opposing the political concept, which became nothing short of treachery and betrayal. In contemporary society, every political ideology, to remain relevant, has acknowledged and accepted the dynamics of change. Recent press statements on the Naga political issue exemplifies the unmistakable rejection of acceptance to differences and free speech. A democratic society accords recognition that perfectly reasonable fellow citizens could hold a different viewpoint. After all, any responsible and sensible person(s) who feels for the common good makes a point which is also shared by fellowmen. This cannot be denied but accepted with forthrightness. On the other hand, a view point on an issue and the facts on the same issue are not the same. A view may be unacceptable but yet given the space it is guaranteed while a fact is indisputable even if it may not be acceptable or liked. Now who decides what is and what is not responsible expression? In a democracy, that is opposed to authoritarianism and dictatorship(even of the proletariat type), freedom of expression is an integral part of people’s participation. Difference is a recognition that only if varying viewpoints are aired freely, then society can be at peace and not afraid of the future. Having passed through the vicissitudes of time and events, people should, after all these decades, gained the wisdom and honesty to check out on their report card and ascertain where they are in relation to the world around them. But when those who are able to manipulate through threat or force, condemn differing opinions in a damning manner; it can only mean that the problem lies here; as silencing dissent is keeping the inconvenient facts in the dark. The force of public reasoning in a democracy offers some measure of protection to freedom that is being espoused and so the opportunity for intellectual synthesis offers protection for a free society that all seek to achieve. Absence of differing opinions in a free and democratic society orchestrates a mental nadir and exposes a barren mind. A social milieu where narrative is a monologue can only result in a future socio-catastrophe. Opinions and views work in tandem to create the balancing options of exposing society to the weather of concepts. Even in politics, the ideology of war for peace or destroying for building-have strong roots in the concept of re-inventing a conceptual vision. Political ideology over the decades amid the disturbances, evolved into various descriptions which suggest that it was relative to the changing times. The biggest question is whether the descriptions that have emerged could, without much explanations, mean that the core ideology should be relevant to the evolving environment or needed to be left undiluted?. These are issues that have elicited different opinions through minds that see issues with some degree of enabling analytical concept that come from a growing awareness about the world around them.

DailyDevotion Untroubled Relationship

In that day you will ask in My name…for the Father Himself loves you… —John 16:26-27 “In that day you will ask in My name…,” that is, in My nature. Not “You will use My name as some magic word,” but— “You will be so intimate with Me that you will be one with Me.” “That day” is not a day in the next life, but a day meant for here and now. “…for the Father Himself loves you…”— the Father’s love is evidence that our union with Jesus is complete and absolute. Our Lord does not mean that our lives will be free from external difficulties and uncertainties, but that just as He knew the Father’s heart and mind, we too can be lifted by Him into heavenly places through the baptism of the Holy Spirit, so that He can reveal the teachings of God to us. “…whatever you ask the Father in My name…” (John 16:23). “That day” is a day of peace and an untroubled relationship between God and His saint. Just as Jesus stood unblemished and pure in the presence of His Father, we too by the mighty power and effectiveness of the baptism of the Holy Spirit can be lifted into that relationship— “… that they may be one just as We are one…” (John 17:22). “…He will give you” (John 16:23). Jesus said that because of His name God will recognize and respond to our prayers. What a great challenge and invitation— to pray in His name! Through the resurrection and ascension power of Jesus, and through the Holy Spirit He has sent, we can be lifted into such a relationship. Once in that wonderful position, having been placed there by Jesus Christ, we can pray to God in Jesus’ name— in His nature. This is a gift granted to us through the Holy Spirit, and Jesus said, “…whatever you ask the Father in My name He will give you.” The sovereign character of Jesus Christ is tested and proved by His own statements.

NAGALAND POST, DIMAPUR MONDAY, MAY 30, 2022

Post-mortem

Democratic India has to have a national identity T he Preamble to the Constitution of India describes maintenance of ‘unity and integrity of the nation’ as its prime objective. Reference to India being a Union of States is for defining the pattern of governance that the Constitution was to lay down in its text. It is strange that the world’s largest democracy born in 1947 could not - for reasons of internal politics - define the ‘idea of India’ in spite of this country’s deeply inclusive civilisational past and allowed the concept to remain vague, debatable and uncertain in terms of the nationalist values it was supposed to invoke amongst its citizens. Citizens of a free nation had every right to connect with their collective recall of history that inculcated in them a sense of oneness rooted in the shared happy and unhappy memories. The political complexities flowing out of the traumatic division of India on communal lines built into the process of Independence itself and the approach of the Congress as the first ruling party of India, of presenting the democratic dispensation here as a contrast to Islamic Pakistan by ‘disowning’ any cultural heritage of the Hindu majority in India, created an amorphous kind of polity that was to open the way for putting the Muslim minority on a special footing for its numbers. All of this produced an unnatural environ for governance that seemed to run against the first democratic principle of ‘one man one vote’ followed in India from day one of the enforcement of Indian Constitution in 1950. Our Constitution was inherently secular in as much as it drew no lines amongst the citizens in providing equal opportunities and equal protection of law to them but the Congress -apparently out of a sense of political insecurity - amended the Preamble in 1976 to introduce the adjective ‘secular’ for the State primarily to retain the loyalty of Muslim minority for the party. With the gradual but

steady rise of BJP as a democratic party, Indian politics was clearly marked by a growing consciousness among other parties that in a situation of acute divide of the majority community due to politics of caste, language and region, the solid support of the Muslim minority was the only possible match winner in elections. There was no going back on this realpolitik which produced a competition among non- BJP parties in the advocacy for the ‘Muslim cause’ Early on, a narrative of majoritarianism, authoritarianism and anti- minority bias was built against Modi government by the opposition groups in concert with anti-BJP lobbies at home and abroad. The country has currently become prone to the politics of communal violence. India is only too familiar with the communal problem that afflicted this country for decades after Independence primarily because the Ulema and the elite guiding the minority community continued with their policy of projecting religious identity into politics, to claim a share of power on that basis and in the process got the ‘secular’ parties ruling then, to humour the Muslim minority in every possible way for its electoral numbers. The anti-Modi political parties in concert with leaders of the minority community, are selectively responding to cases of communal violence - blaming it all on the present leadership at the Centre. This is the same psyche that led them even to absolve Pakistan of any share of responsibility for perpetrating faith-based terrorism in Kashmir. They have run out of ideas on how to politically contest Modi’s leadership - Prime Minister Modi’s rapid rise as a world leader on the strength of the handling of international relations by him, was perhaps propelling the opposition to start running him down on the domestic front more and more. Politics of condoning violence is a cause of great concern from the point of view of national security. Law and order is a state subject and therefore in any

case of communally motivated violence-regardless of which side provoked it- the focus has to be on the accountability of the state government- not on settling scores with the Centre. Time has come for the state governments to live up to their autonomous role of preventing any mass violence with rigorous measures. Since communally sensitive Police Stations were already identified there should be no laxity on the part of the state Police in taking comprehensive preventive measures there- the DM and SP should be held directly responsible for ensuring the same. The Centre has a certain responsibility of monitoring the performance of officers of IAS and IPS- who were recruited, trained and allotted to states by it- and this should be put to an effective use at this juncture. Unlike other crimes, communally motivated violence tends to get prolonged producing a cycle of action and reaction, makes it easy for the agents of the external adversary to dig in their heels and adds to the vulnerability of other sensitive areas. Serious notice has to be taken of the brazenness of Pakistan in declaring in its recently announced National Security doctrine that the ‘pro- Hindutva policies of Modi government had put the safety of India’s Muslims in jeopardy’. While the former Prime Minister of Pakistan- Imran Khan- put India-Pakistan relations in the Hindu-Muslim framework, his successor - Shehbaz Sharif has done no better by talking of Kashmir as the core issue between the two countries and alleging that ‘Kashmiri’s blood was turning the valley red’. Pakistan’s game of causing internal destabilisation in India by instigating communal conflicts here is in the open now and the Intelligence set up of this country has the added challenge of detecting agent provocateurs recruited by ISI for that purpose. There is learning from the experience of recent years when communal militancy proved to be the route for the rise of terrorism

and the spread of radicalisation. Indian Mujahideen (IM) emerging out of Students Islamic Movement of India (SIMI) proved the point. At present the internal security scene in India is potentially disturbed because of the revival of the historical disputes India had inherited in 1947 - mainly revolving round the destruction of the Ram temple at Ayodhya, Kashi Vishwanath temple at Varanasi and the Krishna Janamsthan temple at Mathura. Construction of mosques there in an apparent pursuit of the Islamic mandate of subjugating idol worshippers during the Mughal period of Indian history and earlier - provoked strong Hindu sentiments on the issue that even took the form of a national movement. To stall that, Narsimha Rao government in its wisdom passed the Places of Worship Act in Parliament in July 1991 putting a lid on the disputes at Varanasi and Mathura while exempting Ayodhya from its application. An Act of Parliament can always be contested before the higher judiciary and this is happening now in regard to the 1991 legislation. The question is whether the Hindu’s sense of continued hurt due to a dark chapter of Mughal history justified corrective action in Independent India and whether it was logical for the leadership of the minority community here to identify itself with the doings of a bigoted ruler like Aurangzeb? Both Hindus and Muslims - at least the bulk of the latter represented by Deobandis- had condemned the colonial British rule in India. Why was then this divergence in responding to the infamous side of the earlier Muslim invadors? It is possible that Partition of India forced in the name of Islam, made the leaders of Indian Muslims cling to any links that religion provided to them with these outside rulers and with Pakistan. This however, will only aggravate the situation. Exclusivism of a religion that led it to ‘reject’ other faiths, had to be first worked on by the

community’s own leadership. The impression of faith-based separatism had to be remedied so that an inevitable backlash resulting from it could be minimised. By voluntarily showing an approach of accommodation towards the mass sentiment of Hindus in respect of these particular places of worship that connected with the Hindu Gods, Muslim leaders could have demanded that a closure be put on these unhappy historical memories and thus helped to take the country beyond them, on to the path of ‘development for all’. People of all communities after all had the same concerns of the common man regarding livelihood and betterment of his children. This however, may not necessarily happen considering that many of the Minority leaders for their own narrow politics had even questioned the word ‘nationalism’ and went to the extent of interpreting the gesture of saluting the national flag and standing up during the national anthem as an imposition on Muslims. Differences over flag and constitution need not delay a solution

Prime Minister Modi should deliver on election promise of honorable solution In our understanding of the current status of negotiation, the Naga flag and constitution has not been completely rejected, contrary to some media reports suggesting otherwise. Rather, the GoI has made a counter-offer to recognize a cultural flag and the Naga Yezhabo. The Naga Rising humbly submits that the apparent differences over the nature of recognizing a separate flag and constitution for the Nagas should not be a reason to deny a solution to the people. The Naga Political

E

Groups (NPGs) cannot afford to throw away everything that has been gained over these many years of peace talks. And fighting is no longer a viable option also. The GoI, on its part, should be sincere and honest in acknowledging the history and situation of the Naga struggle. The Naga Rising appeals to both the Government of India and the Naga negotiators to explore the full range of possibilities towards a peaceful agreement by exhibiting utmost flexibility and accommodation. At this critical juncture of the peace process, some modalities will need to be

uropeans sailed along Atlantic Coast of Africa around the Cape of Good Hope to find routes to Indian subcontinent. The adventure was inevitable as the land route was controlled by the Ottoman Empire. India was finally discovered, when a Portuguese navigator Vasco da Gama reached the western coast at Calicut in 1498 however the British were the most successful for the sake of trades. What started with the pursuit of venturing into the jungles of Assam to discover tea? The story was most fascinating. They set out to explore for quest of profit but also colonized our culture. The battle of Plassey, 1757 helped East India Company to seize control of Bengal from Nawab and his French allies. The British, looking to import tea from China, found it expensive and started exploring. But Assam was lying outside the control of the Mughals and the British. The Ahom dynasty successfully evaded the onslaught of the mighty Mughals for centuries. While Moamoria Rebellion (1769-1806) followed by the

evolved by all sides on the question of recognizing the Naga flag and constitution to consolidate the hard earned peace. Also, while public consultation and opinion of stakeholders is most welcome, at the end it is the negotiating parties—here the Government of India and the Naga Political Groups—who should be allowed to work out the final content and modality. And thereafter, the finalized content or competencies negotiated with the GoI should be shared with the Naga public before it is signed because the support of the people would be most vital for the success

Burmese Aggression (1817-1825) fractured the Ahom kingdom, the British annexed Assam in 1826 with the Treaty of Yandaboo. Robert Bruce, a Scotsman, who came to supply arms and troops to the Ahom King Chandra Kanta Singha, discovered that Assamese tea is better than Chinese tea. It’s a ubiquitous sight, where large swathes of land are set aside for tea plantations. It’s very pleasing to the eyes of travelers over the rolling green shrubs. Although Chinese have consumed tea for thousands of years, it’s a fact that Singphos tribes of Arunachal were used to prepare tea in their native ways. The locals believed that ‘the cup that cheers’ has memory boosting powers. A Singpho leader Beesa Gam with Assamese nobleman to British Maniram Dewan helped Robert Bruce and his brother Charles in search of growing tea. When efforts bore fruit from the first saplings, plantation started in Joypur and Dinjoy (Chabua). The discovery of tea felt the first Commissioner of Assam, David Scott to boost up its business prospects. British visualized

of the peace accord. ‘A solution that honours Naga people and respect their political rights’ The ‘Naga problem will be solved’, was what Prime Minister Narendra Modi said during a rare mention of the issue when he addressed an election rally in Tuensang, Nagaland earlier in February 2018. “…We will be able to find A SOLUTION THAT HONORS NAGA PEOPLE AND RESPECT THEIR POLITICAL RIGHTS…” was what the Indian Prime Minister stated. Hopefully Prime Minister Modi will walk the talk and deliver on his election

Colonial Tea the feasibility for tea plantation as the country was well populated with abundance of grain and availability of labour. The Governor General of India Lord William Bentinck quickened the process of acquiring and planting seeds & plants from China on a commercial basis. Meanwhile, England received the first tea chests from Assam in 1838 and it was soon acknowledged as superior to the Chinese variety. The Assam Tea Company was formed in 1839 to cultivate tea in Assam. British colonization brought the waves of migrants’ tribal people from Bengal, Orissa, Bihar, Jharkhand and Madhya Pradesh to work in the sprawling Tea gardens. Ironically tea pluckers caught in time warp of misery and deprivation for generations. Little would Robert or Charles have realized in those trying times that their pioneering efforts would eventually take Assamese tea across the oceans? Today Assam alone produces 17% of world’s tea with 50% of India’s total tea, where millions of workers put their toil and grab for a bud and two leaves in

promise. The Naga Rising believes that whatever disagreement that may exist even at this late stage, the way forward towards an honourable and mutually acceptable solution is MUTUAL UNDERSTANDING AND ACCOMMODATION. The Prime Minister during the signing of the Framework Agreement described as unfortunate the fact that “the Naga problem has taken so long to resolve because we did not understand each other”. Much will depend on the wisdom and magnanimity of the Prime Minister of India to address the long felt aspirations of

picking time. It sounds very easy for picking fresh tea leaves but in reality it’s tough while harvesting. Plucking tea isn’t only related to the quality, output and economic benefits of tea, but also related to the growth and development of tea trees. June is the ideal plucking time for quality tea. Tea Estate Manager supervises and controls the overall operations of the tea estate. We were fortunate to host a dinner for our brother cum Tea Garden Manager Ratul-da recently, whose long experiences have been shared with us. Garden workers pluck green leaves or a yellow bud from a tea shoot that made the world fascinating for making Black, Green, White and Oolong etc. However, unless you’re an avid tea enthusiast, it’s unlikely that you’ll have heard of Yellow tea too often. This is because it’s one of the rarer forms of teas. Nevertheless, this unique tea has quite a lot to offer in terms of taste and health benefits. In similar fashion to the other true teas, the main discrep-

the Naga people. The Naga Rising would like to remind the formulation offered by the much respected former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, who on several occasions mentioned about “peace with dignity and honour”, while referring to the Naga issue. The hard earned peace process and the Naga people’s investment and trust over the years to find an honourable solution should not be undermined by anyone. We trust that Prime Minister Modi will take a final decision that is a winwin for all sides. (This is the second of a 2-part series) The Naga Rising

ancy with Yellow tea is that it’s processed in a slightly different manner. Yellow Tea is the world’s finest premium tea-bag exported wholly to Europe, America and Arab Baskets. Although we haven’t brewed the perfect cup of Yellow Label but we ended up at ‘karak-chaii’ from crushing, tearing and curling (CTC) tea leaves to enhance the flavors. The habit of drinking tea is quintessentially British. We have been influenced by our colonial past and go green with lemon flavor too. The most widely consumed beverage in the world has historical and cultural link. The talks continued on and on. It was 09:30 evening for ‘khana-lagaide’ - his line tells a lot and only ‘baganias’ (tea garden people) can understand. The musings of Jhumur are floated in the wind. The tall Scottish bungalows raise high along the shade trees. Girls are clad in sarees with red borders and they dance to beats of dhol and madal and sing with the flute to depict for the love of pleasure and pain of day-to-day life. Kamal Baruah

The very special thing about Kalpana’s success is that she did not know Kannada language till some time ago but she not only learned it in three months, but also proved it by scoring 92 marks. He also cited the example of Shripati Tudu, who hails from Purulia in West Bengal and is a professor of Santhali language at the Sidho-Kaano-Birsa University, Purulia. Tudu has prepared a version of the country’s Constitution in his native ‘Ol Chiki’ script for the Santhali community, the prime minister narrated. “This is a living example of the spirit of ‘Ek Bharat Shrestha Bharat’. The main tourist attraction which the state government proudly promotes is restricted to the ten-day Hornbill International Festival. On the other hand, tourism in Sikkim is all-year through. Nagaland offers more tourist attraction sites, such as Dzokou Valley, Saramati Peak in Kiphire, for those who love trekking. The state also offers tourists visits to the famed Khonoma biodiversity village, historic Kohima War Cemetery, Kachari ruins in Dimapur, heritage village at Kisama where the second world war museum is also located. There are also various tourist villages and scenic spots in Nagaland which are potential tourist attractions. However, road connectivity within Nagaland is a major problem which has negated tourism trade.

BAGALKOTE(KTK), MAY 29 (PTI): A case has been registered against seven people, including a Sub-Inspector of police and Principal of a government degree college at Teradal in the district for allegedly thrashing a student for wearing a scull cap on the premises of the institution. The police registered a case on May 24 against the sub-inspector and five other police personnel following a direction from a judicial magistrate based on a private complaint from 19-year-old student of Teradal First Grade Government Degree College, Naveed Hasanasab Tharathari. In his petition, Tharathari stated that he had gone to the college wearing scull cap but the principal of the college denied him entry “though there is no government order restricting the use of scull cap inside the college.” The student of the Teradal First Grade Government Degree College alleged that the policemen beat him up and insulted him over his faith. Meanwhile, the police have commenced investigation into the matter.

search and rescue team is on standby at headquarters and in Jomsom.” Tara Air’s 9 NAET twin-engine aircraft carrying 19 passengers, flying from Pokhara to Jomsom had lost its contact on Sunday morning minutes after it took off from Pokhara airport. Some reports suggested that some local residents in Mustang district have heard a loud sound in the Khaibang area but due to bad weather and difficult

geographical terrain, security personnel and the locals could not reach the suspected crash site. The plane has not yet been located, Silwal said, adding “we are trying to reach the place where locals have reportedly seen something burning”. “Once our troops reach the location then only we can verify the findings officially and independently. Our rescue effort from ground and air is relentless,” the army officer said.

Pakistan, IMF likely to reach agreement in June: Finance Minister ISLAMABAD, MAY 29 (PTI): Pakistan is expected to reach an agreement with the IMF next month to resurrect an enhanced bailout package to support the cashstrapped country’s sagging economy, Finance Minister Miftah Ismail has said. Pakistan has repeatedly been seeking international aid to support its failing economy. The talks with the International Monetary Fund are being held in the Qatari capital Doha. He said that the country is projected to need USD 36-37 billion in foreign financing in the next fiscal year. Speaking at a webinar on the “National Dialogue on Economy: The Way For-

ward for Pakistan”, organised by Nutshell Conferences and Corporate Pakistan Group on Saturday, Ismail revealed that at present the government was not considering raising fresh foreign debt from the global capital market and commercial banks after the country’s international bonds lost almost one-third of their

value, while their yields went up significantly, The Express Tribune reported. He said that instead of economic growth, controlling inflation was the top priority of the government. “Inflation control will lead to economic growth,” he said. Giving the breakdown of the external financing requirement, Ismail said “Pakistan is to repay USD 21 billion in foreign debt in the next fiscal year.” Besides, the country will require another USD 10-15 billion to finance the current account deficit. The gover nment is also aiming to boost the country’s foreign exchange reserves by USD 5 billion to USD 15 billion next year.

UK considers return of pounds, ounces in post-Brexit measure LONDON, MAY 29 (PTI): British Prime Minister Boris Johnson is reportedly set to announce a return to imperial measurements of pounds and ounces as a post-Brexit move away from the European metric system to mark the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee next week. As part of a series of announcements to celebrate the 96-year-old monarch’s 70 years on the British throne, UK media reports indicate that Johnson is preparing a nostalgic move away from another European Union (EU) influence on the country. It is also being seen as an attempt to placate his strong Brexit voter base in the wake of the partygate scandal of COVID lockdown breaching parties at Downing Street, which have angered many voters. “As the British people have been happy to use both imperial and metric measurements in their daily life it is good for the government to reflect that now we are free to change our regulations accordingly,” The

But it lost contact at 10.07 a.m. in the Ghodepani area, according to a statement. The plane was carrying 13 Nepalis, four Indians, and two Germans. Soon after the aircraft went out of contact, the Nepal Army deployed its personnel in the Lete area for search. The civil aviation office said in a statement that its rescue coordination centre will stay open throughout the clock and search and rescue will continue until the missing airline traced out. Recife City, the capital of northeastern Pernambuco State, is the most affected by the rains, where 35 people died and about 1,000 others fled their home, Xinhua news agency reported, citing the local Civil Defense. In Alagoas State, two people were killed in the rains, with more than 4,000 residents evacuated. Meanwhile, secondary disasters triggered by the heavy rainfall also caused casualties. On Saturday, 20 people were killed in a landslide in Recife, while six others died in another landslide in the nearby city of Camaragibe.

At present, shopkeepers are legally obliged to use metric measurements such as grams, kilograms, milli-litres and litres when selling packaged or loose goods in England, Scotland and Wales. As opposed to the metric system of weight, in which 1,000 grams are equivalent to one kilogram, under the imperial system there are 14 pounds in a stone and 16 ounces in a pound. Earlier, the Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal had said it had traced the potential location of the plane in Khaibang in Mustang district. Deo Chandra Lal Karna, spokesperson for the Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal, said that based on an emergency locator transmitter (ELT), they have traced the potential area in Khaibang. The ELT is an emergency beacon used in aircraft to alert rescue authorities and to indicate the location and the identity of an aircraft in distress. “We have received a note from Bangalore, India, which tracks the ELT,” said Karna. “But due to some complex weather factors, the rescue teams are finding it difficult to reach the probable site,” he added. “The area is blanketed in dense clouds and it has started raining too. The ground search, however, is underway,” said Karna. Local residents claimed that the plane made two

Ferry tragedies are common in Indonesia, an archipelago of more than 17,000 islands, where ferries are often used as transport and safety regulations can lapse. In 2018, an overcrowded ferry with about 200 people on board sank in a deep volcanic crater lake in North Sumatra province, killing 167 people. Films from Manipur & Meghalaya Out of the two documentaries from Manipur, one chronicles the history of fifty years of cinema in Manipur. The other one – ‘Manipur Mindscapes’ is an attempt to encompass the resilience of the Manipuri people. ‘Because we did not choose’ the lone film from Meghalaya, is a meticulous documentation that examines the participation of indigenous labourers

from the North-East in the World War 1. Shot over four years in Shillong, Guwahati, Kolkata, Chennai and Europe, the film shines light on the unacknowledged and forgotten presence of indigenous labour in the war. Films from Mizoram, Nagaland & Sikkim The state of Mizoram is being represented by two films. While ‘The Uncertain Years’ unfurls the inside story of the life of the people during the Covid-19 pandemic and handling of it by the society, medical volunteers and common people, ‘This is Mizoram’ is full of enchanting visuals along with articulate narration of the exotic natural beauty of

Korean wins at Cannes a tribute First edition of ‘Sumi Night’ held at Jotsoma to entertainment giant CJ ENM streaming sector. In an insightful report on the creative forces at work behind the efflorescence of Korean cinema, ‘Variety’ notes that the Cannes prize for Park’s ‘Decision to Leave’ is particularly satisfying for a core group of filmmakers that also includes ‘Parasite’ director, and Park’s younger brother, Bong Joon Ho, “who have engaged with streaming platforms, but see themselves as filmmakers first”. This particularly tight cluster of leading names consists of a group who are friends rather than rivals. Saturday’s Cannes wins, according to ‘Variety’, are also a vindication for Korean entertainment giant CJ ENM, which was partly responsible for Korean culture’s modern incarnation, and which has been in the Park Chanwook and Bong Joon Ho business for more than 20 years. SV Sunil (53rd) and Nilam Sanjeep Xess (55th). India had earlier defeated Japan 2-1 in their first match on Saturday. Meanwhile in the other Super 4 league match, South Korea defeated Japan 3-1 to move to four points. South Korea had earlier drawn 2-2 against Malaysia in their first match. As the Super 4’s table stands, South Korea with a goal difference of +2 (53) are on top of the table with India (GD) +1 (5-4)

are placed second. Japan with two defeats have no chance of making it to the final while Malaysia (GD) 0 (5-5) have an outside chance if they can beat Japan by a comprehensive margin (minimum 2 goals) provided India and South Korea match ends in a draw. On the day, Malaysia started brightly and put the Indian defence under sustain pressure. Indian goalkeeper Suraj Karkera was brought to action in the sixth minute when he made a fine

save to deny Muhammad Hassan’s reverse hit. Malaysia earned a penalty corner from the resultant move but Karkera positioned himself perfectly to keep out Faizal Saari’s try. It was all Malaysia in the first quarter as the Indian team failed to get a single shot on target. Malaysia’s consistent pressure secured them another penalty corner in the 12th minute and this time Rahim beat Karkera with a powerful low flick to the right bottom corner of the board. The Indians upped their game in the second quarter and created a few chances but that didn’t result in a goal. Malaysia, on the other hand, secured another penalty corner in the 21st minute and once again Rahim was bang on target as India conceded second goal of the match. A minute later, India goalie Karkera came out of his line to narrow down the angle and deny Saari from close range. Trailing by two goals, the Indians stepped up the pressure after the change of ends and pulled a goal back when Vishnukant

converted from a rebound after the team got its first penalty corner. India secured another short corner in the third quarter but Malaysian goalkeeper Hafizuddin Othman came to his side’s rescue. The ‘Men in Blue’ created a few more chances in the third quarter but lacked the decisive touch in the attacking third. India secured back-to-back penalty corners in the 49th minute but Dipsan Tirkey failed to get past Haifizuddin, who was a rock under Malaysian post. India drew level in the 53rd minute, courtesy Pawan Rajbhar’s pivotal presence in the mid-field, where he snatched the ball from an opposition player and then selflessly set it up for Sunil, who scored with a fierce shot from an acute angle. Two minutes later, India took the lead for the first time in the match when Nilam Sanjeep converted a penalty corner. But India’s joy was shortlived as Malaysia drew level a minute later, courtesy Rahim’s well deserved hat-trick.

Gujarat Titans win IPL title in maiden season Kma Super Cup: New Market enters final their key players in the season, began by driving Obed McCoy through extra cover for a boundary and then dispatched an overpitched ball from Ashwin over longon to make the equation 22 runs off the last four overs. The left-hander took two boundaries off Krishna’s final over, a pull swivelled over fine leg followed by a thick edge through third man. Gill finished off the innings in style with a

swivelled six off McCoy over deep square leg to make Gujarat IPL 2022 champions. Brief Scores: Rajasthan Royals 130/9 in 20 overs (Jos Buttler 39, Yashasvi Jaiswal 22; Hardik Pandya 3/17, R Sai Kishore 2/20) lost to Gujarat Titans 133/3 in 18.1 overs (Shubman Gill 45 not out, Hardik Pandya 34; Trent Boult 1/14, Yuzvendra Chahal 1/20) by seven wickets

Gujarat Titans players enter the field after winning the IPL 2022 by beating Rajasthan Royals at the Narendra Modi Stadium on Sunday.

AHMEDABAD, MAY 29 (IANS): A determined Gujarat Titans made their maiden IPL season an unforgettable one by clinching the 2022 title with a sevenwicket win over Rajasthan Royals in front of a roaring home crowd of 1,04,859 at the Narendra Modi Stadium on Sunday. By finishing off a chase of 131 with 11 balls remaining and defeating Rajasthan for the third time in IPL 2022, Gujarat have capped off a season where they exceeded everyone’s pre-tournament expectations to become champions in their debut season of the competition. Chasing 131 wasn’t

going to be easy for Gujarat on a slow, dry pitch with variable bounce, where Hardik Pandya had taken a fantastic 3/17 in the first innings. Wriddhiman Saha was clean bowled by a quick inswinger from Prasidh Krishna while Matthew Wade flicked straight to mid-wicket off Trent Boult. After Gujarat could amass just 31/2 from power-play, Rajasthan’s bowling continued to be incisive from both ends as Shubman Gill and Hardik Pandya struggled to break free despite some boundaries here and there. Gill, who was dropped on fourth ball of the innings, earned another reprieve in the eighth over

when a hoick down the pitch wasn’t caught by a diving extra cover. But the introduction of Ravichandran Ashwin brought Pandya the chance to find his groove, taking the off-spinner for a four with a thick outer edge past the keeper and followed it up with a six over wide long-on. The 63-run stand off 53 balls between Pandya and Gill ended when Yuzvendra Chahal took out the former with the one turning away and taking the outer edge, giving a catch to slip. It seemed like Pandya’s dismissal would leave Gujarat in a spot of bother. David Miller, one of

Gary Kirsten, the mentor of Gujarat Titans, was understandably a happy man after the side defeated Rajasthan Royals by seven wickets in front of a roaring home crowd of 1,04,859 at the Narendra Modi Stadium on Sunday. In a tournament which almost ran for two months, Gujarat made big splashes by being the most consistent side, topping the table, securing a direct ticket to the final and eventually winning the trophy. “It’s fantastic, really happy for the guys, they’ve put a lot into the tournament, great for Ashish (Nehra, head coach) and Vikram (Solanki, director of cricket) as well. You’re looking for good balance, good depth in the auction but most importantly you’re looking for players who can different roles, the one thing we’ve learnt with Ashish is finding guys who were versatile, and at 4, 5 and 6 - we’ve got that,” said Kirsten to broadcasters Star Sports after the match. For Gujarat, there were different players who stood up at various moments to take the side home, something which pleased Kirsten. “We all got energy out of it, we’ve had a great bowling attack - through the end we went a bowler strong and a batter light, but we were always confident, just to get good balance in the team. Sai Kishore came into the team as a left-arm spinner and did really well as well.” Asked about his experience of working alongside captain Hardik Pandya, Kirsten had words of appreciation for him.

New Market (green) and A-Yhome FC during the last semi-final match on Sunday. (NP) Correspondent

K O H I M A , M AY 2 9 (NPN): New Market FC became the second finalist after defeating A-Yhome FC 2-1 in the last semi-final match in the ongoing Kohima Super Cup organised by Kohima Town Club at IGS, here on Sunday. In what could be termed as a complete turn of events, New Market came very close to being knocked out of the tournament as all their efforts met with stiff resistance from their opponents. A-Yhome’s Punuru had impressively netted the ball in 120th second of the match after the team was awarded a free kick no sooner than the referee, Priyobarta, blew the whistle for the game to begin.

This goal stood as the lone score of the game for the first half and even well into the last 3 minutes of full-time. The match got really intense as New Market was on the offensive while on the other hand A-Yhome intently guarded it’s home from any invasive manoeuvres as they got hold of the upper hand early on. It was only when all hopes had fizzled out in the New Market fans that Rhitso Mero brought back a wave of happiness through his score in the 87th minute of the game which was met with a thunderous response from the crowd. With the equalizer in place, the pressure mounted on both the teams as they drew the last of their energy to seal off the deal and pre-

vent a repetition of the first semi-final which had to go through a gruelling extra time of 30 minutes followed by a penalty shootout. And in the last minute of the four minutes added time New Market’s Kevisanyü Peseyie scored the final goal giving no chance to A-Yhome to retaliate even if they wanted as the final whistle was blown within seconds of the goal. A section of the crowd flooded into the stadium to greet their team while on the other sides there was a visible dejection as their team came so close to getting one more shot at the title. The final match is slated for a showdown on May 31 where Barak FC will take on New Market FC to be played under the floodlights.

Badminton will bring more medals for Real Madrid beat Liverpool to win 14th Champions League title India in future Olympic Games: Rijiju

NEW DELHI, MAY 29 (IANS): Following India’s historic Thomas Cup victory, Law Minister Kiren Rijiju on Sunday said that badminton will be one of the major sports, which will help India win more medals at the Olympic Games in future. Rijiju’s remarks came at the conclusion of the Delhi State Ranking prize money badminton championship 2022 organised by DCBA on Sunday. He vowed to align Delhi Capital Badminton Association’s (DCBA) goal with Khelo India in search of talented badminton players across the country. “We want to align DCBA’s goal with Khelo India and take it to district level in other states. When I was the sports minister, I had started TOPS Junior under Khelo India so that we get future Olympic medal prospects,” Rijiju told reporters here. Rijiju, who was earlier the Sports Minister, said under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership Khelo India is successfully moving forward. “Under PM Modi’s

ji leadership Khelo India is successfully moving forward. Sports changes our lifestyle, motivates us in every aspect of our lives. We haven’t identified the power sports yet, sports is also a booming sector, sports is life too,” he added. Speaking about the tournament, the Minister said, “I’m here to motivate the athletes, I love sports and in our country badminton has found its place in recent times. I can vouch for it that badminton will play a major role in India’s quest for medals in Paris 2024.” “ Wi t h m e n’s a n d women’s teams, India has emerged as a major force in badminton. So many countries play badminton but India has emerged as a powerhouse,” he added.

More than 1700 shuttlers participated in the different categories in the Delhi State Ranking Prize Money Badminton Championship 2022, which concluded here on Sunday. The DCBA president praised the players and said the atmosphere during the tournament was very lively and exciting. “The challenges are always there in this particular tournament. The challenge was that some of the players had their board exams. So I had to reschedule the tournament as I didn’t want someone to miss their exam. But beyond that the venue was superb. It is a great complex, I would like to thank the Vice-Chancellor of Delhi University,” Dr Ameeta Singh said. “The atmosphere was very lively and exciting and I can assure you if there were things that were overlooked, I will definitely make up for that in the next tournament,” she added. The Indian badminton team scripted history on May 15 by winning the maiden Thomas Cup title since its inception in 1949.

Gervonta Davis punches Rolando Romero during the first round of a WBA lightweight championship bout, Sunday.

NEW YORK, MAY 29 (AGENCIES): Gervonta Davis retained his WBA lightweight title with a sixthround stoppage of fellow American Rolando Romero in New York on Sunday. Davis’ counter left hook sent Romero face first into the ropes before referee David Fields stopped the fight at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn. “I didn’t even

throw that hard - I just threw it. He just ran right into it,” said 27-year-old Davis. American Ryan Garcia, who was ringside, challenged Davis to a December bout. The unbeaten Garcia, 23, suggested on Twitter that he would return on 16 July, adding: “I’m next so let it be... December let’s get it.” Davis said: “Whatever they want to do I’m here.”

DUBAI, MAY 29 (AGENCIES): Manisha Ramadass won two gold medals while Paralympic champion Pramod Bhagat also secured gold at the 4th Fazza Dubai Para Badminton International here on Sunday. In women’s SU5 category, Manisha defeated Japan’s Akiko Sugino 21-17, 21-11 and then combined with Mandeep Kaur to outwit Thailand’s Nipada Saensupa and Chanida Srinavakul 21-9, 21-13 in just 21 minutes. In men’s singles SL3, Bhagat, who won two gold medals at the recent Bahrain 2022 International, defeated compatriot Nitish Kumar 19-21, 21-17, 21-17 to emerge victories. Manasi Joshi also claimed gold in SL3, beating fellow Indian Mandeep Kaur 16-21, 24-22, 21-14 in 43 minutes.

PARIS, MAY 29 (IANS): Vinicius Junior scored a winner in the second half to fire Real Madrid to a record-extending 14th UEFA Champions League title as the Spanish giants beat Liverpool 1-0 in a delayed final at Stade de France early on Sunday (IST). The Brazilian winger capitalised on Federico Valverde’s cross in the 59th minute to tap the ball into an empty net, securing the fifth Champions League trophy for Los Blancos in nine years. Madrid last won the prestigious continental competition in 2018, when they also beat the Reds in the final. T h i s t i m e, Ju r ge n Klopp’s side created more chances, nine strikes on target from 23 attempts while Madrid only had one from nine. But Belgian goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois, who was named the Player of the Match, made several stunning saves to deny Liverpool’s attack. “Today nobody was going to get in my way,” Courtois said. “I was going to win a Champions League no matter what.” Madrid’s Carlo Ancelotti became the

first coach to win the Champions League for four times, while the Italian is also the only one to have taken a team to five finals. “ I c a n n o t b e l i eve I’ve won four Champions Leagues! It was a difficult game, we suffered in the first half but in the end with all the games we played I think we deserved to win this competition,” said the former AC Milan coach, who led the Italian side to

the European premier glory twice in 2003 and 2007, before another victory with Real Madrid in his first spell at the La Liga club in 2014, Xinhua reports. “The gameplan worked well, and Courtois helped cap a fantastic season for himself personally. It’s a fantastic club and squad with a lot of quality and strong mental character,” he added. Despite having not scored in the final, Madrid’s

lethal forward Karim Benzema finished the season as the top scorer of the tournament with 15 goals, including 10 in the knockout stage. In the final, the French striker did have the ball in the net before halftime only for VAR to deny it for offside. “We’re so happy and proud of this team. We’ve done the double and deservedly so. It was a tough game but it always is in the Champions League, and more

so in a final. It means so much to me to win another Champions League here in my home country,” said Benzema, whom is widely regarded as the frontrunner in the race for this year’s Ballon d’Or. The final, which was initially scheduled at 9:00 pm local time, was delayed for 36 minutes due to “security issue”. French police said in a statement that a group of supporters without tickets had attempted to “penetrate the stadium”, causing chaos outside the Stade de France. UEFA blamed “fake tickets which did not work in the turnstiles” for the events that saw supporters held up outside the stadium. “As numbers outside the stadium continued to build up after kick off, the police dispersed them with tear gas and forced them away from the stadium,” UEFA said, adding that it was “sympathetic to those affected by these events and will further review these matters urgently together with the French police and authorities, and with the French Football Federation.”

Djokovic canters into French Open last eight, Nadal clash looms PARIS, MAY 29 (AGENCIES): Novak Djokovic showed glimpses of his brilliant best to demolish Diego Schwartzman 6-1 6-3 6-3 on Sunday and book his place in the French Open quarterfinals where he is likely to face 13-times champion Rafael Nadal. The world number one’s pace was too much for Argentine Schwartzman, who barely threatened despite enjoying a 3-0 lead in the second set. From then on it was a one-way street for Serbian Djokovic, who won 12 of the remaining 15 games on a chilly Court Suzanne Lenglen. The match looked nothing like the 2017 Roland Garros thriller between the pair, when Djokovic had to fight from two sets down to advance to the fourth round. He raced through it, barely troubled by his opponent’s drop shots and almost managing to get the extra shot. But the Argentine was not ready to give up and he broke for 2-0 in the second set and held for 3-0 only for Djokovic to raise his level again to break

back with a crosscourt forehand winner. Always ready with a good serve when needed, the Serbian staved off break points in the next game to level for 3-3, took the 15th seed’s serve again and wrapped up set two after another break. Schwartzman showed signs of frustration when Djokovic left him red-faced with a delightful drop shot to go 3-2 up in the third.
