The scrutiny of the nominations would be done on Thursday. Sources said 28 of the total 115 nominations were rejected due to non-furnishing of voter list with the names of candidates. The 87 nominations remaining are of 72 candidates which will be scrutinised Thursday. Those who filed their papers include NDA nominee Droupadi Murmu and joint Opposition candidate Yashwant Sinha, who are the main contestants. Besides them, a host of commoners have also filed their papers for the top constitutional post in the country, which include a slum dweller from Mumbai, a namesake of RJD founder Lalu Prasad Yadav, a social activist from Tamil Nadu and a professor from Delhi. The Election Commission has made it mandatory for nominees to have at least 50 members of the electoral college as proposers and another 50 as seconders. as the ‘Land of Diversity’ and Chümoukedima as the ‘Land of Opportunities’. Rio highlighted the history of the new district, which was earlier the gateway to Naga hills and presently continuing to provide numerous opportunities to the people. He said Dimapur still remained the major town and also a “Mini India” as not only Naga tribes, but people of all nationalities resided there. He pointed out that Chümoukedima was fortu-

nate to have well-established Central institutions, three universities (Global University, St Joseph University and ICFAI University), good number of colleges, health facilities, very good connectivity and also possessing good area for economic activities. In the light of various tribal communities living in the new district, he said “Chümoukedima district will become intellectual hub and a highly economically viable district” which he said, made Chümoukedima a “Mini Nagaland”. Rio remarked that the creation of Chümoukedima as a fully-fledged district comprised of areas which could make it a commercial hub and an engine of economic growth, ushering in an inclusive growth of the area. He appealed to neighbouring villagers of Chümoukedima to extend cooperation by giving or

selling lands to the government, as and when required for development and also cooperate with the district administration. He also informed that a commissioner of police will be heading the police of the three districts– Dimapur, Niuland and Chümoukedima. He expressed the hope that there would be unity among various communities to contribute to overall progress of the State. Referring to the formation of other new districts Tseminyu and Shamator, the chief minister said even though were tribal issues in Shamator, yet the intervention of government officials, civil society organisations brought understanding between Yimkhiung and Tikhir tribes. Centre asks states to screen 2% of flight passengers NEW DELHI, JUN 29 (PTI): With India consistently reporting more than 10,000 Covid cases over the past few days, the Centre Wednesday asked states and Union Territories to ensure a random RT-PCR screening of about two per cent passengers in each incoming flight, and send all positive specimens for genomic sequencing. Union Health Secretar y Rajesh Bhushan issued the advisory through a letter to states and UTs, referring to the ‘Operational Guidelines for Revised Surveillance Strategy in context of COVID-19’ issued by the Centre on June 9. Bhushan asked them to implement the revised strategy which focuses on early detection and timely management of sus-

pected and confirmed cases, and the containment of outbreaks of new coronavirus variants. Bhushan said the June 9 strategy was issued with the long-term vision to fully integrate COVID-19 surveillance within existing Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme (IDSP) mechanism. Summarising the actions that states need to take, Bhushan said they should ensure “Surveillance of Incoming International Travelers which will include random screening of 2 per cent of passengers in each incoming flight into India by RT-PCR”. He asked them that all positive specimens should be sent for genome sequencing and such passengers should be advised isolation and clinically managers as per

prevailing guidelines. He also said all healthcare facilities should report Influenza Like Illness (ILI) cases, and mentioned that the District Surveillance Officer (DSO) will be responsible to analyse the data. Five per cent of ILI cases shall be tested through RT-PCR, he said. Health facilities should ensure monitoring of Severe Acute Respiratory Illness (SARI) cases in all district hospitals and selected tertiary hospitals and undertake their RT-PCR test for Covid, he said. State IDSP shall share this data on a fortnightly basis and the lab testing for COVID-19 should upload their data on Indian Council for Medical Research portal, he said.

cess of negotiation, the logs should be released to DFO Peren after which the latter would dispose the seized logs in accordance to the prescribed formalities. The order stated that the already felled trees and stocked would be accounted and to be marked by the forest department for transit as per norms. The order, however, stated that to facilitate legalized operation within the already purchased forest areas by the contractors, copes of sales deeds have been forwarded to the department for taking up necessary actions as per requirement at the earliest and for which the department had assured to expedite the process. Therefore, NTTU contractors have been asked to co-ordinate accordingly. Central NPP rubbishes ‘mass resignation’ claims TUD affirms on ‘one people, one nation’ Staff Reporter

DIMAPUR, JUN 29 (NPN): A day after several members of the National People’s Party (NPP) State unit resigned “en mass”, its national secretary Sushil Huidrom rushed to Nagaland to take stock of the situation and said it was not a serious issue but rather the resignation of the “so-called NPP members” was good for the party. Addressing the media here, Huidrom rubbished the claims and said that the party was not bothered about their resignation, adding that they were in fact happy that these leaders and workers had left

the party. He reiterated that the Central leadership has not taken this matter seriously, but was rather happy to note that the NPP State unit was doing well. NPP State president Dr Andrew Ahoto, who too was present, also asserted that the party was least bothered about the resigna-

tion by a “handful” of party functionaries as they did not even constitute 2% of the party’s total strength. He also termed the claim made by those who had resigned on Tuesday that around 80% of the party functionaries would be resigning as a “big joke” as they made a mockery of

themselves. Claiming that the party functionaries who had resigned were in fact a dissident group, he said they would have been in any case suspended from the party sooner or later due to the anti-party activities that they had been carrying out for the past many months in order to topple the party’s State leadership due to their ulterior and selfish designs. Ahoto claimed that the “dissident group” had been trying to remove him from the post of party president since November last year, adding that signature campaigns were being carried out in this (Cont’d on p-8) regard.

DIMAPUR, JUN 29 (NPN): Tenyimi Union Dimapur (TUD) Wednesday declared its decision to stand on the political principle of “one people, one Nation” (without border) taken by AZ Phizo based on the ideals of the 1951 plebiscite. In a press release, TUD president Vekhosayi Nyekha and vice president Luangbe Zeliang said the union unanimously adopted the resolution during a consultative meeting held on June 28, 2022. The union said the decision was taken in view of the developing situation arising out of the ongoing political talks between the Government of India

and various Naga national groups. Expressing concern over the political development taking place in Naga homeland in recent times, the union, therefore, stated that any settlement/solution should be acceptable, honourable and inclusive of all Nagas and groups. On the formation of Nagaland People’s Action Committee (PAC) under the aegis of NGBF, the TUD said it has viewed the development with all seriousness. The union stated that GBs, being agents and appointees of the government, had no authority to initiate such programmes, which it maintained “may further divide

the Nagas when every section of the society longs for permanent peace.” TUD has, therefore, resolved not to participate in any programme organized by NPAC. It also appealed to every rightthinking citizen to refrain from participation in any such programmes, which it said “may be detrimental to peace and tranquillity.” The meeting was attended by TUD officials, representatives of affiliated tribal units and frontal organizations including Tenyimi Students’ Union Dimapur, Tenyimi Women Union Dimapur and Tenyimi Youth Organisation Dimapur.

Rebel Shiv Sena MLAs pray at Kamakhya temple

Rebel Shiv Sena leader Eknath Shinde arrives to offer prayers at the Kamakhya temple in Guwahati. (PTI)

GUWAHATI, JUN 29 ( PTI): Around 50 dissident Maharashtra MLAs from Shiv Sena and Independent MLAs, led by Eknath Shinde, on Wednesday left the Radisson Blu hotel here where they had been kept for the last few days under massive security, and prayed at Kamakhya temple.

A bus from Assam State Transport Corporation (ASTC) took all the MLAs, accompanied by Assam Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pijush Hazarika, to Kamakhya temple atop Neelachal hill on the bank of Brahmaputra. The MLAs made the V-sign at newspersons who were waiting for

them outside the hotel. From the temple, the dissident will return to the hotel, sources said. They are slated to travel to the Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International (LGBI), from where they will fly to Goa in a chartered flight later this evening. However, sources said plans remain fluid and may depend on fresh court judgements. Along with Hazarika, BJP MP from Assam Pallab Lochan Das and MLA Diganta Kalita accompanied the rebel legislators from the western state. The trip to Kamakhya was under huge police bandobost, with hundreds of policemen led by top officials turning the temple into a veritable fortress where other devotees were not allowed for the duration of the MLAs visit. Earlier in the morning, Shinde separately visited Kamakhya temple to seek the goddess’s blessings. Shinde told reporters outside the temple that he will return to Mumbai on Thursday to “complete the formalities”, implying he would participate in moves to form a new government.

Shinde, rebel Sena MLAs our guests : Assam govt

Assam government Wednesday said rebel Shiv Sena leader Eknath Shinde and other Maharashtra dissidents who are camping in Guwahati for a week are “guests” of the state Assam Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pijush Hazarika said that the dissident MLAs of the western state are being treated as guests and assistance is being provided to them. Hazarika, who is also the government spokesperson, BJP MP from Assam Pallab Lochan Das, MLA Diganta Kalita and Guwahati Police Joint Commissioner Partha Sarathi Mahanta on Wednesday accompanied the rebel legislators in the bus journey from their upscale hotel in the city to Kamakhya temple. “They (the dissident Maharashtra MLAs) told the administration that they would like to visit Maa Kamakhya temple. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma then assigned me to assist them because they are our guests,” Hazarika told

Pijush Hazarika

reporters. “It is the duty of the state government to help any guest coming to the state,” he added. To questions on the number of lawmakers camping in the hotel and when they are likely to leave, Hazarika said “I do not know how many MLAs are there. I am not aware of their plans.” Dissident legislators of Shiv Sena, which heads the ruling coalition in Maharashtra, along with several Independents have been camping in Guwahati, around 2,700 km away from Mumbai, since June 22. Sarma had claimed earlier that the dissidents came as tourists on their own to Assam, which he said, needs funds to deal with the devastating floods.

However, the entire Assam BJP and the state machinery have been seen to be busy with the the Maharashtra MLAs, drawing sharp criticism from the entire opposition. The opposition alleged that the political drama is a game plan of the saffron party to topple the Uddhav Thackeray-led governwto Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International (LGBI) Airport in Guwahati on June 22 to receive the legislators. Hazarika is seen visiting Radisson Blu hotel, where the dissidents are staying, almost daily. Assam Housing and Urban Affairs Minister Ashok Singhal had come too and met the dissidents a number of days. Personnel from reserve battalions and commando units of the Assam Police, besides those from nearby Jalukbari police station and paramilitary forces are keeping a tight vigil on the hotel, which is around 15 km from Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport.

Abhishek Banerjee attacks M’laya CM, calls him ‘Con’man Sangma

SHILLONG, JUNE 29: Trinamool Congress (TMC) national General Secretary Abhishek Banerjee on Wednesday launched a scathing attack on Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma, saying that the National People’s Party (NPP)-led government is “not a double engine government but a double heist and a double robbery”. “This is not a double engine government but a double heist and a double robbery. Double engine government means no one will arrest no one. The central government can steal as much resources from Meghalaya as they want, the Meghalaya police will not hold them accountable and Conrad Sangma will do whatever he wants, the CBI will not harass him, this is

double heist. We have to give a befitting reply to these people who have cheated us and we have to show them their place,” Banerjee said, addressing his party workers on his maiden visit to the State. Stating that the NPP government has completely ignored the state’s interest, the TMC leader alleged that the NPP government has been puppet in the hands of the BJP. “The abodes of clouds have become a haven for the corrupt, we have to change that,” he said “We elected Conrad Sangma with hope but he has become “CON-MAN Sangma”. The abode of clouds has become a heaven for the corrupt,” Banerjee said, Attacking Chief Minister Conrad Sangma, the TMC General Secretary told

his party workers, “Have you seen the body language of the Chief Minister when he meets BJP top brass in Delhi? He is an elected Chief Minister representing 35 lakh Meghalayans, carrying their hopes and aspirations. Should he bow down to BJP leaders? Is this why Meghalaya voted for him? If the answer is no, please support AITC.” Banerjee said, “AITC’s only aim is to save Meghalaya from the divisive politics of the proxy BJP Govern-

ment. Our only goal is also to empower the people, uphold the different ethnic cultures and celebrate the sacred land of Meghalaya.” Asserting that the All India Trinamool Congress is a national party, he said, “The Opposition will try and brand us as Bengali but I promise that Meghalaya will be run by the people of Meghalaya and not by Bengalis. Can the BJP put this on record that none of their governments will be run by Gujarat or Delhi?” Dubbing the NPP government as “a virus” and the TMC as the “antidote”, Banerjee said the TMC is the vaccine for the “NPP virus” that has adversely affected the state’s governance. Giving a call to the people to oust the “proxy BJP government” fronted by the NPP, Banerjee said, “The TMC is the only party

that knows how to take the BJP head-on. We are the only ones who know how to show Amit Shah his place. And that’s why we have come here, to defeat divisive forces,” Banerjee said. Elaborating on the ‘Be The Change’ membership campaign wherein the people of Meghalaya can call on a phone number (9687796877) and extend their support, Abhishek Banerjee said, “Time has come for another independence in Meghalaya. The people here will not compromise on their self-respect and be at the mercy of other states.” “I am going to go back with a mind full of possibilities and a heart full of optimism that Meghalaya is on the cusp of Independence again. All India Trinamool Congress will put its entire weight behind the state unit. But each one of you has

to make a commitment to yourself that in 2023, Meghalaya will show the world its power, capability, and strength. Be it 2023 or 2024, a democratic sun should rise in the East.” Earlier in the afternoon, Banerjee also launched the party office at Lower Lachumiere. Though the party galvanised all its units across the state to bring in supporters to make the maiden visit of its General Secretary grand, four out of the 12 legislators gave Banerjee’s visit a miss. The four TMC legislators who were missing were Himalaya Muktan Shangpliang, Shitlang Pale, Marthon D Sangma and Jimmy D Sangma. Sources say these legislators are on their way out of TMC and are in talks with different regional parties.

NEW DELHI, JUN 29 (PTI): Prominent Muslim organisations on Wednesday condemned the br utal killing of a tailor in Udaipur, calling it “un-Islamic” and asserting that no person has the right to take law into one’s hands. Bodies like All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB) and Jamiat Ulema-e-Hind issued statements condemning the murder of Kanhaiya Lal by two men who had posted videos online that claimed they were avenging an insult to Islam. Delhi Jama Masjid Shahi Imam Syed Ahmed Bukhari called the killing an “act of cowardice” and “an act against Islam”. Islam is a religion of “peace and tranquillity,” be said. In its statement, the AIMPLB said such acts were against the principles of Islam and no one should take law in their hands. “Insulting holy personalities of any religion is a serious crime. BJP spokesperson Nupur Sharma made derogatory remarks about the holy Prophet of Islam, which is very sad for Muslims. The government not taking any action against Nupur Sharma is like rubbing salt on the wounds. But despite this, taking the law into

one’s own hands and killing a person by declaring him a criminal is a condemnable act,” the statement issued on behalf of AIMPLB general secretary Maulana Khalid Saifullah Rahmani. “ N e i t h e r t h e l aw allows it nor does the Islamic Shariah justify it. Therefore, the All India Muslim Personal Law Board strongly condemns the incident in Udaipur (Rajasthan),” the statement said. The board also urged the government to make stringent laws regarding disrespectful comments against holy personalities and take immediate action in such cases. The board also appealed to the Muslim community to act patiently and not take law into

their own hands as well as not indulge in any such action that might disturb communal harmony in the country. Both the Arshad Madani and Mahmood Madani factions of the Ja m i a t U l e m a - e - H i n d condemned the incident and called it “un-Islamic”. In a statement, Maulana Arshad Madani said that just as “we had opposed mob-lynching in many places, we also consider this an inhumane act”. “ We a r e a l w a y s against anyone taking the law into their own hands. The Udaipur incident is a very tragic, un-Islamic and inhumane act, it is highly condemnable. The law of the state would work accordingly in this case as

well,” he said. Madani also said that whatever happened “due to derogatory words” was bad, but in order to maintain law and order and communal harmony in the country, it is necessary to show tolerance and patience. “Just as we oppose this incident, we are strongly opposing insulting the dignity of any religious figure,” Arshad Madani said. “ We o n c e a g a i n demand the government to immediately arrest those who have insulted the Prophet and punish them severely according to the law so that no one will dare to do so again in the future,” he said. In his statement, Maulana Mahmood Madani s t r o n g ly condemned the killing of the tailor and called it a “disgrace to humanity” and an act of defaming the religion of Islam. “No matter whosoever is a killer, no one has the authority to take the law and order into his own hands,” Mahmood Madani said. Jamiat is against all forms of extremism and demands that strict action be taken against such persons irrespective of their religion, caste and ethnicity, he said. It is very important that whether it is this incident or

that of insulting the Holy Prophet, the governments should be vigilant and take stringent action against the perpetrators of such “heinous crimes”, he said. Mahmood Madani appealed to the people of the country to maintain law and order and also said all citizens should unitedly stand against communalism and extremism. Jamaat-e-Islami Hind said the Udaipur incident is “barbaric, uncivilised” and there is no room for justification of violence in Islam. “We strongly condemn it. No citizen should take law in his own hands. Let the law prevail. The culprits should be dealt with according to the law of the land. In any case, peace should not be disturbed. Nobody should try to take the advantage of this ugly crime,” it said. Bukhari issued a s t a t e m e n t s ay i n g t h e “heartbreaking, heinous mu r d e r c o m m i t t e d i n Udaipur has shaken the humanity”. “Islam is a religion of peace and tranquillity. DURGAPUR (WB), JUN 29 (PTI): West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee Wednesday hit out at the BJP-led government at the Centre and said CBI is being repeatedly used by it to intimidate the opposition. The central agency is summoning doctors, scribes and even drivers of electric rickshaws in the name of investigation into the cattle smuggling case and is harassing them, she said at an administrative review meeting of Purba and Paschim Bardhaman districts. “The CBI is calling whoever it can. You know a CBI case is going on here. It has summoned a poor toto (electric rickshaw) driver from Birbhum. Even a doctor has been summoned. They are also calling and harassing TMC panchayat members, legislators as well as journalists. One thousand people are being called for one case,” Banerjee alleged. She urged all to carry on with their work ignoring these. The CBI had on June 16 summoned a Toto driver in connection with its probe into the cattle smuggling case. Its sleuths have claimed that influential TMC leaders have allegedly used the services of the electric rickshaw driver in the case. It had also questioned several

Banerjee, who is among the harshest critics of the BJP, has often claimed that central agencies are being misused by the Modi government to harass the opposition. She iterated that there is no harm in calling the Centre’s Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana as ‘Bangla Awas Yojana’ since Uttar Pradesh and Gujarat have already affixed the names of the states to the programme. “It is my right (to call the scheme as Bangla Awas Yojana),” she said and asked her officers not to enlist new beneficiaries for the scheme as the Centre has not set any target for it. Banerjee said that she will go to New Delhi to find out why the Centre has stopped releasing funds allocated to Bengal for the housing scheme and collect the arrears.

At a press conference organised to officially announce the development, Tejashwi Yadav underscored that all the four MLAs “come from the most impoverished, flood-ravaged region of the state” reeling under the “apathy of a government that does not care for health, education and other types of public welfare”. In the last assembly polls, the RJD had won 75 seats, emerging as the single largest party. It won another seat earlier this year when it snatched Bochahan from the NDA in a by-election.

Never ending debate

O

ver the past decade or so, there have been a series of debates on whether the Nagaland Total Liquor Prohibition (NLTP)Act 1989 has achieved its objective- make Nagaland totally alcohol-free or in Hindi, daru -mukht Nagaland. There was an attempt in 1993 to take a hard look at the Act with the objective of getting all on board. The government sponsored consultative meeting was to debate on whether the Act achieved much of its objective or failed? In case the majority view was that, not only has it failed but instead invited more problems, then the question was whether it should be lifted? However, in the end, despite the rationale for lifting a failed Act presented itself and when the strongest opposition against lifting of the Act came from the church, the government developed cold feet. Nagaland Baptist Church Council (NBCC) in 2021, reiterated its commitment to uphold the Nagaland Liquor Total Prohibition Act 1989, some 32 years after it became a law. Further the Church had urged also upon the government to practically and strictly implement the Act, while it also resolved to “sincerely carry out the ministry towards the alcoholics and related problems.” Since then, the debate raged on with more consultations but the government was reluctant to bell the cat. Recently the Adviser DoSE attracted flak for suggesting that revenue for improving education and health facilities, could be obtained from excise if NLTP Act is lifted. The statement may have been to highlight a point on the need for revenue which the deficit-laden state is unable to raise. According to estimates, the approximate “turnover” of sale of banned liquor is worth nearly Rs.200 crore annually and could even be higher. There are scores of ‘liquor barons’ both in and out of Nagaland, involved in this thriving trade. Quantity of liquor, both smuggled from outside and “manufactured” in illicit distilleries within the state, have mushroomed. A senior doctor with the government had earlier remarked, that the dry law in Nagaland was a farce and a total failure. The spike in the death rate due to consumption of adulterated and spurious alcohol has become a serious issue. It not only causes death but also huge economic loss. Even some organizations which had supported the dry law, today are not disinclined for a review. Their main concern, is that the ban has only opened the floodgates for a thriving black market where more than 90% of liquor consumed are spurious and causing many deaths. Proponents of the prohibition act probably believed that merely passing the law would rid society of evils of alcohol but in reality, the dry law is a misnomer since Nagaland is among the wettest dry state. Interestingly, as per the National Family Health Survey (NFHS-5) report, in the age group of 15-49, the dry state of Nagaland is higher than the national average. On the flip side, prohibition may have made alcohol ‘out of sight and out of mind’ but those who seek find it from wrong hands and wrong places. The government has to apply its mind on which of the two is the lesser evil. Any policy imposing a ban acts as a carpet bombing at first but then the devastating effects emerge which lead to an ultimate failure of the policy. The blunt truth in front of society is that such policies have failed in most states of India.

DailyDevotion The Strictest Discipline If your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and cast it from you; for it is more profitable for you that one of your members perish, than for your whole body to be cast into hell. —Matthew 5:30 Jesus did not say that everyone must cut off his right hand, but that “if your right hand causes you to sin” in your walk with Him, then it is better to “cut it off.” There are many things that are perfectly legitimate, but if you are going to concentrate on God you cannot do them. Your right hand is one of the best things you have, but Jesus says that if it hinders you in following His precepts, then “cut it off.” The principle taught here is the strictest discipline or lesson that ever hit humankind. When God changes you through regeneration, giving you new life through spiritual rebirth, your life initially has the characteristic of being maimed. There are a hundred and one things that you dare not do— things that would be sin for you, and would be recognized as sin by those who really know you. But the unspiritual people around you will say, “What’s so wrong with doing that? How absurd you are!” There has never yet been a saint who has not lived a maimed life initially. Yet it is better to enter into life maimed but lovely in God’s sight than to appear lovely to man’s eyes but lame to God’s. At first, Jesus Christ through His Spirit has to restrain you from doing a great many things that may be perfectly right for everyone else but not right for you. Yet, see that you don’t use your restrictions to criticize someone else. The Christian life is a maimed life initially, but in Matthew 5:48 Jesus gave us the picture of a perfectly well-rounded life— “You shall be perfect, just as your Father in heaven is perfect.”

NAGALAND POST, DIMAPUR THURSDAY, JUNE 30, 2022

I

n the present situation many Naga are confused with the framework Agreement and the Agreed Position in the present peace talks with the Government of India (GOI). The Naga people are watching which group would be heavier when the two groups are weighed by the GOI. And with some politician and some Civil set up Organizations were also after them with each group so that, their side might be heavier when weighed. This is what the GOI is playing politics in Nagaland. Even some clergymen were also with such groups leaving away the original path for a contented life to live with the authorities of the Indian government. Being the State of Nagaland for Christ, it’s ours duty to show the identity of our belief before others. In Nagaland one renegade group demands sovereignty and integration at first, but this was flatly rejected by the GOI. And now they are demanding Flag and constitution with some competencies which make our people curious to know the content. That ball is now with GOI

whether to grant or not, is a question. So, also the other group having peace talk with GOI seems to be in the last part of inking after the agreed position was made. Earlier they speak only Nagas of Nagaland State, but now their slogan seems to change. Here is also question when will it be done, as it depends on the owner of the giver. The Naga National Council (NNC) and the Federal government of Nagaland (FGN) in no point of time demand anything from the GOI, but in good sense the Nagas asking India to leave from Nagaland. Nagas declared its independence one day before India. It was clear that Indians live under the British empire for so many years till the British government granted Independence to them. Before the British intruded into Nagaland the Nagas encountered with the Ahoms and at last agreed to live side by side peacefully upon well demarcated boundaries between them. The British first came in contact with the Nagas when they intruded the Nagas country

Importance of the youth’s opinion on burning issues

T

here is no other quote which summarizes the diverse demographic that is the youth as aptly as this one: “We Are The Dreamers Of Tomorrow”. Over the years, India has continued to have a retrograde political arena wherein party leaders who have been well into their second century of life – and pushing into their sixties – have been called as ‘young’, ‘the voice of the youth’, ‘forward-thinking’, and what not, while pushing their age old traditional agenda on a demographic with whom they cannot identify with in any way. This is not an isolated incident but one which is repeated throughout the nation, in all constituencies. Thus, it is important for the youth to step up, take a stand, and make their opinions known on the issues that are plaguing the country – and even the world. Today, in the aftermath of rapes, we have had venerable politicians, party leaders and some spiritual gurus, blaming victims and clarifying that women should not be wearing clothing which will excite men instead of firmly placing the blame on those who deserve it – the perpetrators of the crime, the rapist themselves. This shows how far removed the mentality of these retrogressive leaders is from the mindset of the youth and the 21st century. In such a situation, it is not only important, but also necessary that the youth raise their voices, stand firmly against the wrongdoers and those letting them off scot-free, and take the reins of the nation in their own hands. After all, it is as Captain America has quoted in the Civil War comics, ‘Doesn’t matter what the press says. Doesn’t matter what the politicians or the mobs say. Doesn’t matter if the whole country decides that something wrong is something right. This nation was founded on one principle above all else: the requirement that we stand up for what we believe, no matter the odds or the consequences. When the mob and the press and the whole world tell you to move, your job is to plant yourself like a tree beside the river of truth, and tell the whole world — “No, you move.’ A tad verbose, but it gets the message across. It is of vital importance that every citizen plays a role in the process of developing not only the country, but also the entire world, and this burden will sooner or later fall on the shoulders of the youth, and when the time comes, we can only hope that they are ready for it. After all, they will be inheriting a world rife with wars, with mass exodus due to the refugee crisis, with global warming and climate change as glaciers continue to melt and temperatures continue to soar, and with rising tensions among nations, religions and cults on differences of geographical borders, religious turmoil, and much more. Thus, it is of vital import that they be ready to face these challenges, and to that end, instead of waiting for tomorrow, the smarter choice would be to start taking an interest in these issues from now itself, form an informed opinion on them, and through discourse and debate, work towards the best future of the human race. Because the alternative is too scary to consider. Pritesh (As published in Indian Youth)

in the year 1832. Since then there were intermittent warfare between the Nagas and the British lasting 48 years. All these years the Nagas valiantly and relentlessly defended their country. Thus the British sought for peace with the Nagas. Thereby, a verbal agreement was arrived at between the two peoples (Britishers and Naga), Where the Nagas allowed the British to stay in their land provided they do not interfere in the affairs of Naga tradition and social life. To make clear of our position when we are not Indians, how then shall we demand our sovereignty from our aggressor India. Nagas make known our sovereign to India as well as to the United Nations Organization (UNO) one day of India’s Independent on 14th August 1947. To show our unity and position as a nation conducted Voluntary Plebiscite on 16th May 1951 which was informed to the GOI and to the UNO respectively. On 22nd March 1956 the Nagas formed a government known as Federal Government of Nagaland

(FGN). Nagas have our own Flag and Constitution from the beginning itself. We are a Nation and we need no permission from any other foreign country. Indians should be ashamed in describing the Nagas as the oldest insurgency group in India. Nagas are defending our land and its people and not fighting with Indians, and this Indians should know. On 19th August 1946 Jawaharlal Nehru described the status of Nagaland in connection with Couplan Plan as: “Nagaland being those long frontiers of India which are neither part of India nor Burma nor of India states nor any foreign power.” On 19th July 1947 Naga delegation met Mahatma Gandhi at Bhangi Colony Delhi, Gandhi encouraged Naga Independence, and when he was informed of the Indian’s evil intention he promised to sacrifice his life for Nagas in case if India Government used force. C.Rajagopalachari first Governor General of India clearly stated that Nagas have every right to be Independent outside

the India Union”. The first C-in-C of the India Army and Field Marshal Gen. Cariappa said “India Army would never be used against the Nagas under his command”. The Nagas acknowledge the leaders of India who honestly stated the uniqueness of the Nagas that the Nagas have full liberty to stay as an Independent Nation basing on the historical right. The educated Indians are using 16th Point Agreement and Shillong accord as Indians weapons to make confuse of the Naga young educated people. This two should not be confused by our young educated Nagas as the records are clear enough. The Ceasefire of 6th Sept. 1964 between the Federal Government of Nagaland and the Government of India over run the Statehood of 3rd Dec. 1963 so, also Shillong Accord is an invalid document that both the GOI and the FGN could implement with this accord. The more the India talks of this accord the more they will be ashamed. But till today the Indians are always trying to evade the

truth which they can no longer conceal. When our people realized and know the truth, then there is always ways to do what we should do. It may take years but Nagas will surely be as a free nation. Dear fellow Nagas, we are going to celebrate the 75th age old Nagaland Independence declaration and it is at hand. And therefore, I would like to urge all Naga brothers and sisters not to be confused of the present Naga peace talks and know that India is playing politics with them. Indo-Naga conflict is a case of forceful aggression and that India should know and quit Nagaland. Nagas are not Indians and Nagaland is not in India territory. History is very clear and so, The Nagas will never submit our right to the aggressor though powerful India Nation might be. Nagas believed that the conflict between the two nations would be amicably settled in peaceful ways and means. Acüyi Vadeo Joint secretary, NNC Nagaland

The Antithesis of Christianity and Politics in Nagaland

H

as Christianity failed the Nagas? According to the 2011 census, 87.93% of the Nagas are Christians in Nagaland. Baptist is a major denomination in Nagaland. However, irrespective of denominations, Christian believes in the risen Lord Jesus Christ as the Saviour and the Bible as the Word of God. History tells us that Christianity came to Nagaland in the mid-nineteenth century with the arrival of the American Baptist Missionaries. Along with the emergence of Christianity, it has brought a drastic transformation in the field of social, political, education and economic, culture and religion, etc. Cultural practices such as head-hunting were eliminated. Ethnic conflicts, wars, clanisim, tribalism, bribery, etc were curtailed and good qualities such as forgiveness, peace, and reconciliation were sown in the Naga’s soil. This is the reason monoliths of peace and reconciliation could be seen in many of the Naga villages. The sudden outbreak of Revival Movements has also brought thousands of lives to Jesus Christ. Before the emergence of the British rule and the subsequent entry of the American Baptist missionaries Nagas lived in their village. They had their laws, customs, and way of governance. The village was the only political and social structure. They were well organized to fight and stand against any outside forces. However, with the emergence of Christianity, a new political structure came into being. There was a paradigm shift in the governing system from the traditional Naga society into a modern society. People started to cooperate with different tribes thereby, breaking the bond of enmity and hatred. A new administrative system came into being in the form of towns and cities. Thus, Naga adapted to the modern political system where they exercise their rights and duties for the desired leadership and governance. Over time, the political scenario of Nagaland deteriorated from bad to worse. The evidence could be seen with our own naked eyes. It is an ugly truth that is seen every day. If one is allowed to comment regarding the political situation in Nagaland, I believed every individual would have unending words to speak. In the recently con-

cluded election campaign, the Chief Minister of Assam Shri Himanta Biswa Sharma stated that Nagaland still does not have any medical college neither in Dimapur and Kohima the capital of Nagaland. It is very heart-wrenching to see Nagaland State being compared to Karbi Anglong district. I believed this has opened every eye of the cabinet ministers and politicians in Nagaland. This is an open challenge and needs to be taken seriously. The developmental work in Nagaland is very pathetic. Most of the projects undertaken are either half-done or abandoned due to misused of funds. According to the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) reports highlighted that 399 projects were lying incomplete as of 31st March 2020. The National Highways and the various roads that connect to different towns and villages are pathetic. Dimapur the only metropolitan city in Nagaland lies in a desolate state due to the poor road condition. It has become a city of potholes. Private houses are mushrooming, shining and glittering standing proudly and magnificently. But, just outside the gate awaits long stretches of potholes road. Individuals, students’ bodies, and various organizations kept condemning the government for practising bribery, injustice, and nepotism. Students kept pressuring the government for not releasing their scholarships on time. Backdoor appointments are growing at an alarming rate in the government offices, and various other departments. Meantime, the government employees are murmuring, protesting against the government for withholding their salaries for months. According to District Employment Officer (DEO), Nagaland has one of the highest unemployment rates in the country with 92,302 unemployed youth having registered by January 2022. However, the actual number of unemployed youth could be much higher or even double those registered. Thus, many educated youths get involved in intoxicated kinds of stuff and antisocial activities out of frustration and depression. Politicians are busy campaigning for the upcoming NLA election in 2023. They are busy building their ground by playing a blaming game.

They keep stating that Naga Solution is arriving soon only when the election is imminent. Flying from Dimapur to Delhi has become a political propaganda. Meeting after meetings but barely seen any fruit. The constant meets between the Government of Nagaland and GOI seem futile. It has created more division than unison. The Church keeps pressurizing the public and the Government for a clean election but sadly, politics is played even inside the church. Nobody knows deep within when the voting is done. Many tend to vote for their own family, relatives, and community irrespective of what the candidate is like. Alas! Many will still fall for the petty bread and butter provided in the election. Church Buildings, Bible Colleges, and Prayer Centers are mushrooming in every nook and corner but sad to see the society left in desolation. On Sunday, people flock to Church carrying a big Bible and dress beautifully. They clap their hands and sing, dance and pray and cry. But, in the next following days, they go back to their same old nature. No changes could be seen in the family and society. Bonhoeffer writes, “The world belongs to Christ, and only in Christ is the world what it is. It needs, therefore, nothing less than Christ himself. Everything would be spoiled if we were to reserve Christ for the church while granting the world only some law, Christian though it may be. Christ has died for the world, and Christ is Christ only in the midst of the world.” Therefore, it is high time to retrospect ourselves where we have gone wrong and amend it before it is too late. God

has blessed the Nagas with rich land, cultures, languages, etc., but it is heartbreaking to see ourselves being divided politically, economically, and geographically. If we profess ourselves as Christians and Bible believers, we ought to adhere to the biblical teaching. Bible says “No man can serve two masters” (Matthew 6:24). People who long to be rich soon begin to do all kinds of wrong things to get money (I Timothy 6:9-12). Do not store up treasures here on earth where they can erode or may be stolen (Matthew 6:1921). Keep your life free from the love of money (Hebrew 13:5-6). Dishonest money dwindles, but whoever gathers money little by little makes it grow (Proverbs 13:11). Therefore, as Christians, it is necessary to be the ‘salt of the earth’ and the ‘light of the world’ (Matthew 5:13-14). We must defend the rights of the poor and the needy (Proverbs 31:8-9). Therefore, Christianity and politics must be in conformity and uniform with the biblical teachings. They are inseparable. We cannot claim to be a good Christian while deviating from the Christian truth. Our lifestyle, action, and beliefs should be intertwined and coordinated together. They must not contradict one another. We are not worthy to call ourselves Christian while acting and behaving like a crafty devil. Nagaland is known as a Christian State and the tagline goes “Nagaland for Christ.” Let us all strive to live together in the likeness of Jesus Christ and be the “Salt” and “Light” of the World. Sir,

Potholes emerging

Along with the rains, new potholes have been emerging at prominent roads in Dimapur. Yesterday, on my way to the market, I experienced many jolts in the car unlike other days, and as I looked back, I saw new potholes which I had not seen last month. I’m sure many Dimapurians with vehicles can ride through specific locations blindly without looking where the potholes are because most of us have memorised them. They are not only causing us frequent visits for vehicle maintenance but can also cause accidents, and I hope the concerned look into this. Apong Aier, Dimapur

‘PM’s Gabbar Singh Tax turning into Grahasti Sarvnaash Tax’ NEW DELHI, JUN 29 (PTI): Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday hit out at the government over rise in taxes on prepacked food items and hotel stay, alleging that the prime minister’s “Gabbar Singh Tax” is now taking the shape of “Grahasti Sarvnaash Tax” (household destruction tax). “Declining income and employment, topped with rising blow of inflation. The Prime Minister’s ‘Gabbar Singh Tax’ has now taken a formidable shape of ‘Grihasthi Sarvnaash Tax’ (household destruction tax),” Gandhi said on Twitter. He cited a news report that tax on food items, study and hotel stay would become expensive. Gandhi had dubbed the Goods and Services Tax (GST) as “Gabbar Singh Tax” earlier. Pre-packed and labelled food items like meat, fish, curd, ‘paneer’ and honey will now attract GST, a tax that will also be levied on the fee that banks charge for the issue of cheques. the recommendations of a group of ministers from states on withdrawing exemptions with a view to rationalising the levy, officials said. The panel headed by Union FM Nirmala Sitharaman and comprising representatives of all states and UTs, on the first day of the two-day meeting accepted the GoM’s recommendation for reviewing the exemption from GST that packed and labelled food items currently get. The registration process that began on June 24 had seen filing of 94,281 applications by Monday and 56,960 applications till Sunday. After the scheme was unveiled on June 14, violent protests against it rocked several states for nearly a week, and several opposition parties demanded its rollback. Defence Ministry Spokesperson A Bharat Bhushan Babu said on Twitter, “2,01,000+ aspirants have registered to become AgniveerVayu. Last date to get on board: July 5, 2022.” Earlier during the day, IAF said on Twitter, “So far, 1,83,634 future Agniveers have applied on the registration website <https://agnipathvayu.cdac.in> ...Registration closes on July 5, 2022.” Under the Agnipath scheme, youths between the ages of 17-and-a-half and 21 years would be inducted for a four-year-tenure.

NEW DELHI, JUN 29 (PTI): Celebrated advocate K K Venugopal, 91, was on Wednesday re-appointed the Attorney General for India for three months, the Law Ministry said. Venugopal, the chief legal adviser to the government and top law officer of the country, was not willing to continue in the position due to “personal reasons” but acceded to a request by the government, officials said. “The President is pleased to re-appoint Shri K. NEW DELHI, JUN 29 (PTI): India on Wednesday dismissed as “completely unwarranted” the remarks by the UN Human Rights office over the arrest of social activist Teesta Setalvad and said these comments “constitute an interference” in the country’s independent judicial system. The UN’s Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) has voiced concern over the arrest and detention of social activist Setalvad and called for her immediate release. “#India: We are very concerned by the arrest and detention of #WHRD @TeestaSetalvad and two ex-police officers and call for their immediate release. They must not be persecuted for their activism and solidarity with the victims of the 2002 #GujaratRiots,” the UN Human Rights office said in a tweet on Tuesday.

Arindam Bagchi

Responding to media queries on the remarks, Ministry of External Affairs Spokesperson Arindam Bagchi said, “We have seen a comment by OHCHR regarding legal action against Teesta Setalvad and two other persons.” “The remarks by OHCHR are completely unwarranted and constitute an interference in India’s independent judicial system,” he said. Authorities in India act against violations of law strictly in accordance with established judicial processes, Bagchi asserted.

“Labelling such legal actions as persecution for activism is misleading and unacceptable,” he said. A court in Ahmedabad on Sunday remanded Setalvad and former state director general of police RB Sreekumar in police custody till July 2 in a case of fabricating evidence to frame innocent persons in connection with the 2002 Gujarat riots. Former IPS officer and accused Sanjiv Bhatt, who is serving a life sentence in a custodial death case and is lodged in a jail in Palanpur in Banaskantha district, will be brought to Ahmedabad on a transfer warrant. Setalvad, Sreekumar and Bhatt are accused of abusing the process of law by conspiring to fabricate evidence with an attempt to frame innocent people for an offence punishable with capital punishment in connection with the 2002 Gujarat riots.

Govt gives ONGC, Vedanta freedom to sell crude oil NEW DELHI, JUN 29 (PTI): The government on Wednesday allowed firms like ONGC and Vedanta to sell locally produced crude oil to any Indian refinery for turning it into fuel, such as petrol and diesel, as it deregulated one of the last few avenues that were still under its control. While contracts for oilfields awarded since 1999 gave producers the freedom to sell oil, the government fixed buyers for crude produced from older fields, such as Mumbai High of ONGC and Ravva of Vedanta. Briefing reporters on the decisions taken at a meeting of the Union Cabinet, Information and Broadcasting Minister Anurag Thakur said from October 1, the companies will have the freedom to sell crude oil in the domestic market. However, the ban on the export of crude oil will continue. This decision would mean ONGC can auction its 13-14 million tonnes a year of crude oil produced from Mumbai High field to

any refiner, including private sector Reliance Industries Ltd and Rosneft-backed Nayara Energy. The firm at present has to sell the Mumbai High crude oil to state-owned Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd (BPCL) and Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Ltd (HPCL). It could not sell the oil to its own Mangalore refinery, which had conceived a petrochemical complex on the premise that 5 million tonnes of Mumbai High crude could be turned into value-added PTA and Benzene. In the present system, the government fixes the quantity each

buyer will pick. This limits the scope for price negotiations and often sellers sold oil at discount. Now, the sellers can eauction the crude to anyone paying the highest price.

Venugopal, the oldest person to occupy the post, was appointed as the AG for India in July 2017, succeeding Mukul Rohatgi. He was subsequently reappointed to the post. The attorney general usually has a tenure of three years. When Venugopal’s first term as AG was to end in 2020, he had requested the government to relieve him of his responsibilities on account of his advanced age. However, he later accepted a fresh tenure of one year, as the government was keen on Venugopal’s continuance given the highprofile cases he was handling and his vast experience at the Bar. An eminent advocate of the SC, Venugopal has appeared in a large number of cases involving important issues of constitutional and corporate law, including the constitutional challenge to the dilution of Article 370.

The former union minister also criticised the Agnipath, the new defence recruitment scheme, brought out by the Union government, and said no necessary consultations were made before going ahead with its introduction. There are Parliament Standing Committees on defence which were also not consulted, he alleged. It was all done in a hurry and the result was seen on ground, he said, mentioning about the country-wide agitations against the scheme. This is not the way to solve the issue of unemployment, he added. He also condemned the “barbaric” killing of a tailor in Udaipur city of Rajasthan, saying that such instances of violence have no place in a democracy and the perpetrators should be punished as strictly as the law of the land permits.

NAGALAND POST, DIMAPUR THURSDAY, JUNE 30, 2022

BALASORE (ODISHA) JUN 29 (PTI): India on Wednesday successfully flight-tested the indigenously developed high-speed expendable aerial target (HEAT), ABHYAS, from the Integrated Test Range (ITR) in Chandipur off the Odisha coast, as per a statement. The performance of the aircraft at low altitude, including sustained level and high maneuverability, was demonstrated during the test flight, it said. The target aircraft was flown from a ground-based controller in a pre-designated low-altitude flight path,

which was monitored by various tracking sensors deployed by ITR, including radar and an electro-optical targeting system, it added. ABHYAS is designed and developed by Aeronautical Development Establishment of Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO). The air vehicle was launched using twin underslung boosters, which provide the initial acceleration to the vehicle. It is powered by a small gas turbine engine to sustain a long endurance flight at high subsonic speed, the statement said. The target aircraft is

equipped with a microelectromechanical systemsbased inertial navigation system. It also has a flight control computer for guidance and control along with a radio altimeter for very low-altitude flight and a data link for encrypted communication. The vehicle is programmed for fully autonomous flight, the statement said. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh congratulated DRDO and the armed forces for the successful flight trial of ABHYAS, and said that the development of this system will meet the requirements of aerial targets.

(From p-1) “They had tried their best by using all sorts of cheap and dirty tricks and anti-party activities so that they could gain control of the party and then manipulate it according to their whims,” he claimed. He mentioned that their resignations were expected. The NPP leader mentioned that the resignation of the dissident group came as a huge sigh of relief for everyone as such “wayward and undisciplined” party functionaries had already sidelined themselves. Ahoto remarked that it was matter of great shame that NPP general secretary (organisation) Limanuksung Longkumer, who was given the charge of Karbi Anglong, had failed miserably in making the party grow. He claimed that NPP in Karbi Anglong had dwindled further under his charge, facing embarrassing losses in both Assam Assembly elections as well as the recently-concluded Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council polls. He claimed that NPP Nagaland was growing from strength to strength on all fronts, adding that the party was enthusiastically working towards overall growth, development and progress of the masses. Senior advisor, Deo Nukhu took a dig at the dissidents claim of “mass resignation” and said that despite giving responsibilities they failed to contribute for the growth of the party. Since they were inactive, Nukhu they were on the verge of expulsion/suspension. In order to avoid suspension/expulsion, they chose to resign, he added. Meanwhile, Nukhu said the party was hopeful to win good number of seats in the 2023 Assembly polls with new faces and potential candidates.

He however maintained that village tradition could not be imposed in urban areas. He said Nagaland was not exempted from municipal and Panchayati Raj and therefore, elections must to be conducted to elect municipal and town council members in order to run the administration. “People under the municipal and town councils will have to understand and follow this rule,” he appealed. Union Territory Puducherry, which is ruled by BJP, too wants that the compensation mechanism to be extended to make good the losses suffered due to the GST rollout and expected some positive outcome in the next council meeting in August. As per data on revenue growth collated for the Council meeting, only five out of 31 states/UTs -- Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Mizoram, Nagaland, Sikkim -- registered a revenue growth higher than the protected revenue rate for states under the GST in the financial year 2021-22. Puducherry, Punjab, Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh have recorded the highest revenue gap between the protected revenue and post-settlement gross state GST revenue in 2021-22.

(From p-1) He expressed happiness on the creation of Shamator district, which be declared as “brotherhood district”. Rio said his government has been steadfast with its efforts and commitment in bringing all-round development to every area of the state. On the confusion over elections to rural local bodies (RLBs) and urban local bodies (ULBs), Rio said villages in Nagaland were governed by village councils by tradition. He said Nagaland and Jammu & Kashmir were exempted from the purview of the Constitution (73rd Amendment) Act. Here, he explained that Nagaland did not conduct elections to village councils and village development boards, since “Ours is not election, but

states will be compensated for any loss of revenue from the new tax for five years. That timeframe is ending on June 30. With two years being lost in the pandemic, states have sought an extension of this compensation period by five years. “A few states today said that they would like the compensation to continue for some time, even as few other states said that yes it is a question of coming out of pandemic but they have to stand on their feet. “There were broadly statements being made with a sense of whether compensation can be continued if not for five years, for a few years,” Sitharaman said. When the GST was rolled out, states were promised compensation for revenue loss till June 2022. CHANDIGARH, JUN 29 (PTI): About a dozen states on Wednesday pitched for extending by a few years the compensation paid to states for revenue lost from the implementation of the goods and ser vices tax (GST) regime. The GST Council, the highest decision-making body of the indirect tax regime, however, did not take any decision at its meeting here. A final decision is likely to be taken in the next GST council meeting in the first week of August, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said while talking to the media after the 47th GST Council meeting here. “As many as 16 states spoke on GST compensation in today’s meeting. troops kill Palestinian Joe Biden: US boosting force Journos should not be jailed: Israeli militant in West Bank raid posture in Europe for Russia threat UN chief on Zubair’s arrest

U N I T E D NAT I O N S, JUN 29 (PTI): Journalists should not be jailed for what they write, tweet and say, a spokesperson for UN chief Antonio Guterres said on Tuesday in response to the arrest of Alt News cofounder Mohammed Zubair in India, asserting that it is important that people be allowed to express themselves freely without the threat of any harassment. Fact-checking website Alt News co-founder Zubair was arrested by the Delhi Police on Monday for allegedly hurting religious sentiments through one of his tweets posted in 2018. He was produced before a magistrate, who sent him to police custody for a day. Responding to the journalist Zubair’s arrest, Spokesman for the Secretary-General Stephane Dujarric said: “In any place around the world, it is very important that people be allowed to express themselves freely, journalists be allowed to express themselves freely and without the threat of any harassment”.

Dujarric was responding to a question at the daily news briefing here on Zubair’s arrest. “Journalists should not be jailed for what they write, what they tweet and what they say. And that goes for anywhere in the world, including in this room,” Dujarric said in response to another question by a Pakistani journalist on whether he is also calling on Zubair’s release from custody. Zubair’s arrest came days after the Gujarat authorities arrested Teesta Setalvad on the charges of “criminal conspiracy, forgery and placing false evidence in court to frame innocent people” in the

2002 Gujarat riots. The UN Human Rights agency has voiced concern over the arrest and detention of social activist Setalvad and called for her immediate release. Setalvad was detained from her house in Juhu area of Mumbai on Saturday afternoon after an FIR was registered against her at the Ahmedabad crime branch based on a complaint lodged by crime branch inspector D B Barad. She was brought to Ahmedabad via road by the Gujarat police squad. The Ahmedabad crime branch on Sunday arrested Setalvad, a day after she was detained in Mumbai and shifted to Gujarat. “#India: We are very concerned by the arrest and detention of #WHRD @ TeestaSetalvad and two ex-police officers and call for their immediate release. They must not be persecuted for their activism and solidarity with the victims of the 2002 #GujaratRiots,” UN Human Rights tweeted on Tuesday.

JERUSALEM, JUN 29 (AP): Israeli forces shot and killed a Palestinian militant early on Wednesday in the occupied West Bank during clashes that broke out during an arrest raid, Palestinian officials said. The Palestinian Health Ministry said that Mohammad Marei, 25, was wounded by Israeli gunfire near Jenin during an arrest raid by the Israeli military and later died. The Palestinian Islamic Jihad militant group claimed Marei as one of its fighters, and said he died “performing his duty and carrying the banner of Jihad and resistance”. The Israeli military said that while troops ar-

rested two Palestinians in the northern West Bank city, Palestinians “hurled explosive devices” at soldiers, who responded with gunfire. It confirmed that a Palestinian was shot, but gave no additional details about the man’s condition. The army said no troops were injured in the overnight arrest raids. Recent months have seen a rise in deadly violence in the West Bank. The Israeli military has carried out near-daily raids following a string of deadly attacks by Palestinians inside Israel that killed 19 Israelis, with several of the attackers coming from the northern West Bank town of Jenin.

MADRID, JUN 29 (AP): President Joe Biden said Wednesday that the U.S. is enhancing its military presence in Europe for the long haul to bolster regional security after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Meeting with NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg in Madrid at the opening of the alliance’s annual leaders summit, Biden said “NATO is strong and united” and that steps to be taken during the gathering will “further augment our collective strength.” Biden opened his participation in the summit by announcing that the U.S. is establishing a permanent headquarters in Poland, sending two additional F-35 fighter jet squadrons to the UK and will send more air defense and other capabilities to Germany and Italy. “Today I’m announcing the United States will enhance our force posture in Europe and respond to the changing security environment as well as strengthening our collective security,” he said. liance was facing its biggest challenge since World War II, welcomed Biden’s announcement. “This really demonstrates your decisive leadership and strength in the trans-Atlantic bond,” Stoltenberg said, thanking Biden for the “unwavering support from you and from the United States to Ukraine.” Biden said the US will permanently station the U.S. Army V Corps forward command in Poland , a move that he said would strengthen US-NATO interoperability across the alliance’s eastern flank. The move marks the first permanent basing of U.S. forces on NATO’s eastern edge. Biden added that Biden announced after arriving for the summit on

Tuesday that the U.S. would base two additional destroyers at its naval base in Rota, Spain, bringing the total number to six. The U.S. currently has more than 100,000 servicemembers deployed across Europe, up by about 20,000 since just before Russian President Vladimir Putin’s invasion of Ukraine began four months ago. Biden predicted that meetings this week would make for a “history-making summit” as leaders were set to approve a new strategic framework, announce a range of steps to boost their defense spending and capabilities, and clear the way for historically neutral Finland and Sweden to join NATO. Biden said Putin thought NATO members would splinter after he invaded Ukraine, but got the opposite response instead. “Putin was looking for the Finland-ization of Europe,” Biden said. “You’re gonna get the NATO-isation of Europe. And that’s exactly what he didn’t want, but exactly what needs to be done to guarantee security for Europe.”

Turkey lifting objections to Sweden, Finland joining NATO USD 30bn from Russian oligarchs frozen MADRID, JUN 28 (AP): Turkey agreed Tuesday to lift its opposition to Sweden and Finland joining NATO, a breakthrough in an impasse clouding a leaders’ summit in Madrid amid Europe’s worst security crisis in decades triggered by the war in Ukraine. After urgent top-level talks, alliance Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said “we now have an agreement that paves the way for Finland and Sweden to join NATO.” Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has prompted Sweden and Finland to abandon their long-held nonaligned status and apply to join NATO. But Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan had blocked the move, insisting the Nordic pair change their stance on Kurdish rebel groups that Turkey considers terrorists. Finnish President Sauli

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and NATO secretary general Jens Stoltenberg.

Niinistö said the three countries’ leaders signed a joint agreement after talks on Tuesday. Turkey said it had “got what it wanted” including “full cooperation ... in the fight against” the rebel groups. The agreement comes at the opening of a crucial summit dominated by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. U.S. President Joe Biden and other NATO leaders arrived in Madrid for a sum-

mit that will set the course of the alliance for the coming years. The summit was kicking off with a leaders’ dinner hosted by Spain’s King Felipe VI at the 18th-century Royal Palace of Madrid. Stoltenberg said the meeting would chart a blueprint for the alliance “in a more dangerous and unpredictable world.” “To be able to defend in a more dangerous world we have to invest more in our defense,” Stoltenberg

said. Just nine of NATO’s 30 members meet the organization’s target of spending 2% of gross domestic product on defense. Spain, which is hosting the summit, spends just half that. Top of the agenda for leaders in meetings Wednesday and Thursday is strengthening defenses against Russia and supporting Ukraine. Biden, who arrived with the aim of stiffening the resolve of any wavering allies, said NATO was “as united and galvanized as I think we have ever been.” Moscow’s invasion on Feb. 24 shattered European security and brought shelling of cities and bloody ground battles back to the continent. NATO, which had begun to turn its focus to terrorism and other nonstate threats, has had to confront an adversarial Russia once again.

WASHINGTON, JUN 29 (AP): A multinational task force designed to seize Russian oligarchs’ wealth has blocked and frozen USD 30 billion in sanctioned individuals’ property and funds in its first 100 days in operation, the Treasury Department reported on Wednesday. That’s on top of the yachts, other vessels and luxury real estate that have been impounded as well as USD 300 billion in Russian Central Bank funds that have been immobilised, the department said. “We continue to increase Russia’s cost of its war,” Treasury said of the REPO task force, short for Russian Elites, Proxies and Oligarchs. civil rights advocates have raised concerns about potential overreach. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen and Attorney General Merrick Garland convened the REPO task force in March in conjunction with a number of other countries, which work together to investigate and prosecute oligarchs and other individuals allied with Putin. The European Commission has set up its own

Freeze and Seize Task Force to work in conjunction with the REPO group. The collective has worked to impound bank accounts, assets and properties. For instance, earlier this month, the US announced sanctions on God Nisanov, one of the richest men in Europe, and Alexey Mordashov, one of Russia’s wealthiest billionaires, along with his wife and two adult children. “REPO members

will continue to track Russian sanctioned assets and prevent sanctioned Russians from undermining the measures that REPO members have jointly imposed,” Treasury said. With sanctions increasing, there are growing concerns that seizures are being carried out on nonAmericans outside of the judicial review process, with big consequences for sanctioned individuals who may not be able to challenge the seizures. Attorney Tom Firestone, who specializes in international investigations for business clients, said seizures “can have consequences for innocent people who have nothing to do with the war — we need to be careful not to penalize innocent people.” “We’ve seen a tremendous expansion of the sanctions,” Firestone said.

51 migrants die after trailer abandoned in San Antonio heat SAN ANTONIO, JUN 29 (AP): Desperate families of migrants from Mexico and Central America frantically sought word of their loved ones as authorities began the grim task Tuesday of identifying 51 people who died after being abandoned in a tractor-trailer without air conditioning in the sweltering Texas heat. It was the deadliest tragedy to claim the lives of migrants smuggled across the border from Mexico. The driver of the truck and two other people were arrested, U.S. Rep. the truck’s registration to a residence in San Antonio and detained two men from Mexico for possession of weapons, according to criminal complaints filed by the U.S. attorney’s

office. The complaints did not make any specific allegations related to the deaths. The bodies were discovered Monday afternoon on the outskirts of San Antonio when a city worker heard a cry for help from the truck parked on a lonely back road and found the gruesome scene inside, police Chief William McManus said. Hours later, body bags lay spread on the ground. More than a dozen people — their bodies hot to the touch — were taken to hospitals, including four children. Most of the dead were males, he said. The death count was

the highest ever from a smuggling attempt in the United States, according to Craig Larrabee, acting special agent in charge of Homeland Security Investigations in San Antonio. “This is a horror that surpasses anything we’ve experienced before,” San Antonio Mayor Ron Nirenberg said. “And it’s sadly a preventable tragedy.” President Joe Biden called the deaths “horrifying and heartbreaking.” “Exploiting vulnerable individuals for profit is shameful, as is political grandstanding around tragedy, and my administration will continue to do everything possible to

stop human smugglers and traffickers from taking advantage of people who are seeking to enter the United States between ports of entry,” Biden said in a statement. Authorities did not know the home countries of all of the migrants, nor how long they were abandoned on the side of the road. By Tuesday afternoon, medical examiners had potentially identified 34 of the victims, but they were taking additional steps, such as fingerprints, to confirm the identities, said Bexar County Commissioner Rebeca ClayFlores.

India beat Ireland by 4 runs; win T20 series

MALAHIDE (IRELAND), JUN 28 (PTI): Deepak Hooda hit a master-class maiden century as India survived a mighty scare before defeating Ireland by four runs in a nailbitting high-scoring second T20 International to sweep the two-match series here on Tuesday. Hooda scored 104 off 57 balls to become only the fourth Indian to hit a T20 International ton, while Sanju Samson contributed 77 off 42 balls to power India to a mammoth 225 for seven after opting to bat. Opting to bat, Hooda showed he belonged to the big stage with his scintillating stroke play, both off the front and backfoot. Hooda and Samson joined hands and the duo batted effortlessly, albeit handing two difficult chances, to share 176 runs off just 85 balls to lay the foundation for India’s huge total. Once Hooda departed at the team score of 212, Surya Kumar Yadav (15) and skipper Hardik Pandya (13 not out) tried to accelerIndian players celebrate afte winning the second T20 against Ireland. ate the scoring but failed as few sixes. licking start to their chase, parts of the ground to keep India lost three wickets for Hooda decorated his with Stirling and Balbirnie Ireland at par with the ask- the addition of just 14 runs knock with nine fours and sharing 72 runs for the ing rate. in the last two overs. six hits over the fence. KUALA LUMPUR, JUN 29 (IANS): Ace Indian shuttlers,PV Sindhu and Parupalli Kashyap, moved into the second round while Saina Nehwal crashed out in the opening round at the Malaysia Open 2022 women’s and men’s singles events respectively at the Axiata Arena, here on Wednesday. of Thailand 21-13, 21-17 in the first round. On the other hand, World No 26 Saina, who was competing for the first time since the Thailand Open in May, was beaten by 30th-ranked Iris Wang of the US 11-21, 17-21. The London 2012 bronze medallist is yet to go past the second round this year. Former world champion Sindhu took control of the match from the start

with a four-point lead at the first break. With scores at 16-13, Sindhu, a two-time Olympic medallist, won five successive points to take the 1-0 lead. Chochuwong fought hard to stay in the match in the second game. Sindhu, however, once again broke free late with six consecutive points after trailing 15-17. With this win, Sindhu improved her head-to-head record over Chochuwong to 6-3. She will now face world No 20 Phittayaporn Chaiwan of Thailand in the second round. Meanwhile, Commonwealth Games gold medallist Parupalli Kashyap, got better of South Korea’s Heo Kwang Hee 21-12, 21-17 in the first round of men’s singles. Chelsea join race to sign Raphinha

Raphinha scored 11 Premier League goals for Leeds last season. L O N D O N, J U N 2 9 (AGENCIES): Chelsea have joined the race to sign Leeds winger Raphinha. The Brazil international has been the subject of a bid from Arsenal and interest from Barcelona. Leeds would be looking for more than £50m for Raphinha, who they signed from Rennes for £17m two years ago. But Chelsea’s American owners want to make the 25-year-old part of a new-look attacking line-

up, and have already made contact with England international Raheem Sterling. As yet, there has been no formal offer made to Leeds, who survived the threat of Premier League relegation on the last day of last season. That was partly to do with a sparkling performance from Raphinha, who scored the opener in a 2-1 win over Brentford and is due to report back for pre-season training at the start of next week.

Leeds and England midfielder Kalvin Phillips is already set to join Manchester City in a £45m deal. New Chelsea co-owner Todd Boehly has moved quickly in his role as interim sporting director by loaning club-record signing Romelu Lukaku back to Inter Milan. That move is expected to be announced in the next 24 hours once the 29-year-old has completed a medical.

Bumrah set to lead India in 5th test against England

MUMBAI, JUN 29 (AGENCIES): Jasprit Bumrah is set to lead the Indian team for the fifth Test against England after Rohit Sharma was ruled out of the fixture after testing positive for COVID-19. According to Sportstar report, sources in the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) have indicated that with Rohit yet to recover, the team management plans to go ahead with Bumrah as the captain at Edgbaston. Since 1987, no fast bowler - Kapil Dev was the last - has led India in Tests. Earlier this year, the fast bowler was appointed the vice-captain of the team for the limited overs series against South Africa, and this time, he will have to don the captain’s hat as both Rohit and KL Rahul, who was originally named the vice-captain but was ruled out due to an injury, are unavailable for the fixture. However, a formal announcement from the BCCI is awaited.

NOVAK DJOKOVIC ON TOP

LONDON, JUN 29 (AGENCIES): Defending champion Novak Djokovic recorded a routine win over Australian Thanasi Kokkinakis as the top seed eased into the Wimbledon third round. The 35-year-old Serb is aiming to win a fourth successive title at SW19, where he is a six-time winner. The vastly superior Djokovic, a 20-time major winner, was in fine form in a 6-1 6-4 6-2 win against the world number 79 on Centre Court. He will next play compatriot Miomir Kecmanovic or Chilean Alejandro Tabilo. Kokkinakis made a promising start as he claimed the opening point of the match on title-favourite Djokovic’s serve with a delicate touch over the net. But any hint of an upset was quickly dismissed by Djokovic, who initially struggled for rhythm in his first-round match against Kwon Soon-woo before coming through in four sets. Following

that match, Djokovic said the possibility of not being allowed to contest another Grand Slam for 11 months because of his vaccination status was serving as “motivation” at Wimbledon this year. In a dominant display, the former world number one consolidated an early break of serve to take a 3-0 lead - and he put the first set beyond doubt as he struck again before serving out the first set to love. Djokovic clinched another early break in the second to once again put Kokkinakis on the back foot, his versatility around the court - including some spectacular net-play - leaving the improved Australian with no answer despite his best attempts. There was to be no let-up, as a break of serve at the start of the third set, reinforced with another for a 4-1 lead, helped polish off a commanding win - despite Kokkinakis reaching a first break point in the final game.

Neeraj primed to win medal in Diamond League

STOCKHOLM, JUN 29 (PTI): Buoyed by a strong start to the season, Olympic champion javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra is primed to clinch his maiden Diamond League medal in his first appearance in four years in the prestigious one-day meet here on Thursday. The 24-year-old Chopra was second in the Paavo Nurmi Games in Turku with a big national record throw of 89.30m before winning his e v e n t at Kuor tane G a m e s with a creditable 86.60m effort under treacherous conditions. Both t h e eve n t s in Finland had strong fields, though the Turku line-up had more stars than at Kuortane, where Chopra slipped after an awkward release of his spear in his third attempt under slippery conditions due to rains. Luckily, he was up on his feet immediately and won the event without

Pickett becomes first player with a limb difference to play for US L O N D O N, J U N 2 9 (AGENCIES): Carson Pickett has become the first player with a limb difference to play for the United States women’s team. The 28-year-old defender was born without part of her left arm. Pickett, who plays her club football for the North Carolina Courage, recently made her 100th National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) appearance and was named in the league’s best XI for June. She described her international debut on Tuesday as a “dream come true”. Pickett played the full 90 minutes at left-back in a 2-0 friendly victory against Colombia at the Rio Tinto Stadium. Manuela Vanegas’ own-goal gave them the lead before Kelley O’Hara scored a 77th minute winner as the US extended their impressive unbeaten streak to 69 games on home soil. It was the second of two games against

any injury. This will be Chopra’s first competition in a Diamond League meet after his fourth-place finish in Zurich in August 2018 with an effort of 85.73m. He has taken part in seven Diamond League meets -- three in 2017 and four in 2018 -- but is yet to win a medal. He had two fourthplace finishes, the other one being in Doha in May 2018, where he had thrown

87.43m. The prestigious one-day meet at the Swedish capital will be Chopra’s biggest event ahead of the World Championships in Eugene, USA, next month. He will also be facing the toughest field of the season so far with all the three Tokyo Olympics medallists in fray. Germany’s Johannes Vetter, who has the maximum number of 90plus throws among the active throwers, continues to be in the sidelines. He is not fully fit and also did not take part in the German nationals. After winning gold at Kuortane where he was earlier based, Chopra has shifted to Uppsa-

la, less than 100km from Stockholm, and will be not be taking part in any event after the Diamond League and before the July 15-24

World Championships. The Indian superstar has beaten reigning world champion Anderson Peters of Grenada twice this month. Peters has seen a dip in form after winning the Doha Diamond League meet with a seasonleading throw of 93.07m. After that, he had thrown 86.60m at Paavo Nurmi Games for a third place and 84.75m in Kuortane Games for another third position. Peters’ fitness could also be a concern as he did not complete a l l his throws in an event at Orimattila in Finland last week, recording a best throw of 71.94m. Olympic silver medallist Jakub Vadlejch of Czech Republic and compatriot Tokyo Games bronze winner Vitezslav Vesely will also be in action. This will be the first time all the Tokyo Olympics medal winners will be in action together this season.

NEW DELHI, JUN 29 (IANS): Indian boxers Simranjit Kaur and Ananta Chopade kickstarted their campaigns with contrasting victories in the opening round at the inaugural edition of Elorda Cup in Nur-Sultan, Kazakhstan on Wednesday. According to information received here, the 2018 World Championships bronze medallists Simranjit lived up to favourite’s tag with a dominating start in the tournament. She pulled off a comprehensive win against the local boxer Ischanova Nazym by unanimous decision in the women’s 60kg encounter. Whereas, in the country’s first bout of the day, Ananta dealt with a stiff challenge from the Mongolian pugilist Dorjnyambuu Ganbold. However, the Indian kept his cool during an intensely fought men’s 54kg thriller and eventually managed to tilt the result in his favour by a narrow 3-2 verdict. Simranjit and Ananta will now square off against China’s Xu Zichun and

Simranjit Kaur Kazakhstan’s Altynbek Nursultan respectively in their quarter-finals matches. Meanwhile, three other Indian pugilists suffered opening-round defeats. 0-5 margin in the men’s category. A 33-member Indian contingent, including 12 men, has been participating at the on-going event with two teams featuring in the women’s section.
