Later the merger was confirmed by NDPP spokesperson Merentoshi Jamir, at Hotel Vivor Kohima Friday evening. Addressing the media, Merentoshi said the merger was done to strengthen the leadership of chief minister Neiphiu Rio and his government. He also exuded confidence that the merger will also strengthen the effort to bring the Naga Political issue to a logical conclusion. Merentoshi welcomed the 21 MLAs and their de-

cision to merge with NDPP had opened the window for anyone willing to join NDPP in future. To another query, Merentoshi reiterated that the current UDA government (NDPP, NPF and BJP) was comfortable. He said though UDA was an opposition-less party, it did not mean that it was a party-less government and therefore, NPF legislators joined NDPP as they wanted to remain under one umbrella. Merentoshi also said the pre-poll alliance with BJP was strong and NDPP will not break the alliance. He said changes that are taking place at the moment were done with the knowledge of the BJP leadership and said pre-poll alliance will continue. He also said NDPP did not feel there was any threat since the alliance was going well and as per the pre-poll alliance agreement. time high of 207,111 MW on Friday, informed the Ministry of Power. “The maximum All India demand met touched 207111 MW at 14:50hrs Friday, an all-time high so far!,” the ministry tweeted.

This comes amid the reports of the power crisis in many states across the country during the extreme heatwave. The demand for power has risen in April due to heatwave and people in different parts of the country

are facing power cuts. The problem has been accentuated by a steep rise in prices of imported coal due to the Russia-Ukraine conflict and some power plants not operating to their full capacity. Amid reports of a dip in coal stocks with thermal plants, Union Minister Pralhad Joshi has said that the country’s thermal plants hold about 22 million tonnes of coal which is enough for 10 days and replenishment will be done continuously. Tr a i n s c a n c e l l e d : Meanwhile, Indian Railways has decided to cancel 657 train trips to speed up the movement of coal rakes to power plants.

SC rescues MBBS students hit by Ukraine Govt urged to intervene into crisis, Covid-19; asks NMC to frame scheme ‘unconstitutional selection’ NEW DELHI, APR 29 (AGENCIES): In a relief to students who pursued medical education in foreign countries and was compelled to come back to India due to pandemic and completed the course including practicals through online which is not recognized here, the Supreme court on Friday asked the National Medical Commission to allow them to undertake clinical training in India in the medical colleges and thereafter recognized their degree instead of invalidating their degrees, a TOI report stated.

Underlining the importance of practical classes in technical education like medical science, a bench of Justices Hemant Gupta and V Ramasubramanian said that a person cannot become a good doctor without practical training which can be done only in physical form and not through online. But the bench in the same breath also said that a sympathetic view should be taken to-wards students who could not attend practical classes physically due to the pandemic.

DIMAPUR, APR 29 (NPN): Higher & Technical Education and Tribal Affairs minister Temjen Imna Along has called upon Naga society to evolve with time and embrace changes.

Coincidentally, Chugh’s statement also comes on the day when 21 NPF legislators merged with the ruling NDPP in Kohima. Asked about the statement given by chief minister Neiphiu Rio that the NDPPBJP alliance would continue, he remarked that nothing could be stated as of now, asserting that the party’s election committee would take a final call on this. “As of now, we are now in a coalition government. And when our party’s central election committee takes a decision regarding the alliance, it would be communicated to the media,” he added.

But the bench further said, “However, the fact remains that the students were permitted to undergo medical courses abroad and that they have completed their curriculum according to the certificate granted by such foreign Institute. Therefore, such national resource cannot be permitted to be wasted which will affect the life of young students, who have taken admission in the foreign Institutes as part of their career prospects. Therefore, the services of the students should be used

to augment health infrastructure in the country. Thus, it would be necessary that the students undergo actual clinical training of such duration and at such institutes which are identified by the appellant and on such terms and conditions, including the charges for imparting such training, as may be notified by the appellant,” it said. In this case the students had completed their medical education from China. They completed nine semesters of their academic course on the campus. (Cont’d on p-7)

This is it! Women reservation: Society needs to evolve with time, says Along

Tarun Chugh (NP)

He however claimed that the coalition government was performing commendably. He mentioned that BJP had taken a big step by forming a coalition government for the sake of social reforms, adding that wherever BJP was part of the ruling coalition, the State gover nments performed well. Asked which party BJP would like to have an alliance with for the Assembly polls, Chugh re-plied that the decision in this regard would be taken by the party’s election committee, claiming that the party was inclined towards helping the poor. On the strategy of BJP for the general elections, he maintained that his visit to Nagaland was to strengthen the party, adding that national leaders visited all States as part of the continuous efforts to strengthen the party. “The agenda of my visit is only to strengthen the party, not to decide strategy,” he remarked.

Delivering a keynote address at the first ever panel discussion on “Women Reservation in Ur-ban Local Bodies: Issues and challenges in Nagaland” held at Dimapur Government College (DGC) here on Friday, he emphasised that

only change was permanent, noting that Naga society had seen many changes not only in the way they lived and looked at things, but also in the way they tried to do things by respecting their culture and tradition. On 33% reservation for

women in urban local bodies (ULBs), he noted that Naga society had deprived women in politics for a long time. And in a secular and democratic set-up like Nagaland, he pointed out that giving reservation to women would only mean that Naga men respected women as they would be part of the policymaking bodies. Along lamented that reservation had been politicized in the wrong way in the State as the idea of reservation was to allow a section of society grow strong. He

expressed gratitude to chief minister Neiphiu Rio and deputy chief minister Y Patton for initiating discussion on the issue. Noting that Naga society was patriarchal, he exhorted men to alleviate the condition of women by making them part of the decision-making process. He also encouraged women to be strong by not necessarily being a feminist and work shoulder to shoulder with men for overall welfare of the society. (Cont’d on p-8)

of NGBF office bearers

DIMAPUR, APR 29 (NPN): ‘Concerned district GB leaders and GB delegation members’ to the general meeting of Nagaland GB Federation (NGBF), which was held at Phek on April 20 & 21, have urged the state government to intervene into, what they described as “unconstitutional selection” of new NGBF office bearers and “autocratic functioning system” of NGBF office. In a representation to the commissioner Nagaland, the ‘concerned GBs’ sessional chairman Thepfukedou Kuotsu and sessional secretary Luikang, on behalf of ‘concerned GBs’ meeting at Chakhro Public Organization (CPO), Chümoukedima on April 28, 2022, demanded that the government initiate necessary action as per the NGBF constitutional norms so as to safeguard the GB institution from “autocratic working system.” They said the GBs were “very optimistic” that NGBF officials would have ethical sense in running the office affairs as per the constitutional norms. However, the signatories expressed shock that “they had manipulated and workout everything in

an unconstitutional way just to suit their sinister agenda.” The ‘concerned GBs’ pointed out that as per Article 10 (A), a candidate once held the post of president shall not be nominated for second time. However, they said the previous president was re-selected covertly for another five years term. Further, they pointed out that as per Article 8 (C), the nomination committee will adhere to the norms strictly in selecting the office bearers as laid down, failing which the house has the right to turn down the selection of any candidate and will have to nominate other candidate if found violated the norms. However, in violation, the signatories said new office bearers post have been created such as three vice presidents, two secretaries, one assistant finance secretary and one cultural secretary and picked candidates without the house approval. The ‘concerned GBs’ also stated that some newly created district GBs association and newly selected GB office bearers were denied their rights to participate in NGBF executive meeting (Cont’d on p-8) K Y M C
