Patton, Along in Delhi; awaits Centre’s take on proposed NUG Correspondent
KO H I M A , AU G 2 9 (NPN): Nagaland BJP faces an agonising wait over whether or not to finally go ahead with the decision for formation of the controversial all-party government titled ‘Nagaland United Government’ (NUG) comprising of PDA constituents (NDPP, BJP & Independent) and opposition NPF legislators. After the August 13 joint resolution signed by the PDA coalition- NDPP and BJP with opposition NPF to form the proposed NUG, union home minister Amit Shah on August 19 summoned chief minister Neiphiu Rio, BJP legislature party leader and deputy chief minister Y. Patton and state BJP president and minister higher education & tribal affairs Temjen Imna Along to Delhi for discussion over the issue. It may be recalled that the NUG was mooted for all legislators to be under one government for the Naga political issue and also to act as facilitators to bring all stakeholders together for early solution to the Naga political issue.
New BH number series for vehicles
NEW DELHI, AUG 29 (AGENCIES): Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has introduced a new registration mark for new vehicles– Bharat series (BHseries). A vehicle with BH mark will not require a new registration mark when the owner shifts from one State to another. This facility will be available on voluntary basis to Defence personnel, employees of Central & State Govt; Central and State PSUs; and private sector companies having their offices in 4 or more States/ UTs. However, the BJP central leaders maintained that since all legislators are together under the Core Committee for the Naga political issue, there was no need to bring all legislators to form an all-party government for the same issue. After the meeting with home minister Amit Shah on August 21, chief minister Neiphiu Rio returned to Nagaland while both Patton and Imna Along stayed back in Delhi for further consultations. Sources said Rio was also informed to get back over the proposed NUG in the light of the views of the Centre being made known. When contacted over
phone, Imna Along, who is currently in Delhi along with Y. Patton, informed Nagaland Post that since BJP high command will decide on the proposed NUG, the state BJP legislature will act as per the directives of its leaders. The state BJP organisation is also faced with differences of opinions when senior party workers on August 26 expressed total opposition against the proposed NUG. The press statement by the BJP party workers was followed by both NDPP and NPF holding their respective consultative meetings among legislators and party functionaries on
August 28 in which the two parties reaffirmed the resolution for NUG. While the NDPP and NPF reaffirmed the decision for NUG, the state BJP is yet to take the call since the final decision over the issue is to be decided by the BJP high command. There are speculations over what would happen if BJP high command decides not to go ahead with the proposed NUG. BJP may decline on the ground that an opposition-less assembly and government does not serve the people and is also undemocratic and cannot guarantee securing of an early political settlement.
JOHANNESBURG, AUG 29 (IANS): South Africa has identified a potential variant of interest (VOI) of Covid-19 that is assigned to the PANGO lineage C.1.2. C.1.2 was first identified in May 2021 during the third wave of Covid in the country, said researchers from the National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD) and the KwaZuluNatal Research Innovation and Sequencing Platform. It has since been detected across the majority of the provinces in South Africa and in seven other countries spanning Africa, Europe, Asia and Oceania,

NEW DELHI, AUG 29 (IANS): The Directorate General of Civil Aviation has extended the ban on scheduled international commercial passenger flights to and from India till September 30. The ban was previously extended till the end of August. In a circular on Sunday, the civil aviation regulator said: “The competent authority has further extended the validity of circular issued on the subject cited above regarding Scheduled International commercial passenger services to/from India till 2359 hrs IST of September 30, 2021.” It added that this restriction shall not apply to international all-cargo operations and flights approved by the DGCA. However, international scheduled flights may be allowed on selected routes by the regulator on a caseto-case basis. South Africa detects new Covid variant C.1.2 the researchers reported in the study that is yet to be peer-reviewed and is posted on pre-print server medRxiv. The variant has evolved from C.1, one of the lineages that dominated the first wave of infections in South Africa and was last detected in January 2021. C.1.2 is “associated with increased transmissibility and reduced neutralisation sensitivity,” wrote the team, including Cathrine Scheepers, from NICD, in the abstract. Compared to C.1, the new variant has “mutated substantially” and is more mutations away from the original virus detected
in Wuhan than any other Variant of Concern (VOC) or VOI detected so far worldwide. According to the study, C.1.2 has 41.8 mutations per

Delta sublineage AY.12 found in India
A new sublineage of the SARS-CoV-2 Delta variant known as AY.12 has been detected in a number of states in India, and is most likely the cause of the latest surge of Covid cases in Israel. According to the weekly bulletin by the Indian SARSCoV-2 Genomics Consortium (INSACOG), the Delta variant continues to infect people around the world with Israel seeing new cases rising to near previous highs despite about 60 per cent of the population being fully vaccinated. INSACOG said that many cases in India, which were earlier classified as Delta, are now reclassified as AY.12. “However, since the AY.12 definition is inconsistent, final numbers will take some time,” the statement said.

For the study, the team created a pseudovirus for the study, which only had the S protein but not the rest of the virus, to show in the lab that this protein is enough by itself to cause disease. Covid-19 vascular disease, not respiratory, says study NEW YORK, AUG 29 (IANS): Covid-19 is not a respiratory illness, as widely accepted, but a vascular one, claims a study. The study, led by the University of California-San Diego, could explain blood clots in some Covid patients and other issues like “Covid feet”, which are not typical symptoms of a respiratory illness, Euronews reported. The findings, published in the journal Circulation Research, showed how the virus attacks the vascular or circulatory system. The S protein of the virus,
school respectively and 11.8% cited other places. When contacted by Nagaland Post, H&FW joint director and National Tobacco Control Programme’s (NTCP) State nodal officer Dr Chiekroshuyi Tetseo expressed grave concern over high tobacco consumption at an early age. The joint director warned that early exposure to tobacco led to stronger addiction, which could lead to life-long use thereby causing tobacco-related ailments. Tetseo pointed out that students were mostly influenced by people around them like their parents, teachers, health workers, peers, etc, and hence stressed creating a conducive environment for them. To discourage tobacco consumption, Tetseo suggested measures like ban on sale of tobacco near educational institutions, claiming that aggressive anti-tobacco awareness campaignswere also being carried out. Tetseo acknowledged that without better coordination and support from school education department and churches, creating awareness on the issue would never succeed. On the findings of
Uri Manor, assistant research professor, at the varsity was quoted as saying. “That could explain why some people have strokes, and why some people have issues in other parts of the body. The commonality between them is that they all have vascular underpinnings,” Manor added. According to Professor Rafael Manez Mendiluce, head of intensive care at Bellvitge University Hospital in Spain, the vascular problem could be related to the inflammatory response of the patient’s immune system.
The death toll has climbed to 4,37,830 with 460 fresh fatalities, according to the data updated at 8 am.
