India hits terror launch pads across LoC

NEW DELHI, SEP 29 (AGENCIES): In wake of the attack on an army base in Uri in Jammu & Kashmir, India has launched multiple surgical strikes across the Line of Control (LoC) in the state to prevent Pakistani terrorists who had “positioned themselves at launch pads with the aim to carry out strikes in Jammu and Kashmir and other metros,” the Indian army said on Thursday. At a press conference, Director General of Military Operations (DGMO), Lt General Ranbir Singh, reported that the Indian Army conducted surgical strikes on terror launch pads at the LoC last night and the strikes were based on specific intelligence input of terror groups who were planning to infiltrate into India and carry out terror attacks. Referring to the continuous infiltration from across the LoC in Jammu & Kashmir, Singh said, “This is reflected in the terror attacks in Poonch and Uri. Almost 20 attacks have been foiled this year. During these terror and infiltration attacks, we have recovered items including GPS.” Singh also said India had provided Pakistan with “fingerprints and DNA samples” after the terror attacks in Poonch and Uri on September 11 and 18 September. Pakistan was informed of the cross-border strike, the DGMO said. “I have spoken to the Pakistan DGMO and shared details of the at-

NEFIS flays DU’s decision to make hindi compulsory DIMAPUR, SEP 29 (NPN): North-East Forum for International Solidarity (NEFIS) has condemned the decision of the Delhi University (DU) to make Hindi compulsory in DU syllabus, pointing out that the new syllabus would put the students of the North-East under serious disadvantage vis-à-vis students of rest of the country. In this regard, as a means to oppose the decision, the forum has decided to launch agitation. Terming it as “another disgraceful attempt to discriminate students coming from different parts of the country”, NEFIS convenor Chinglen Khumukcham in a press note stated that DU this time, after several attempts, arbitrarily decided to make it mandatory “without issuing any notification”. It reminded of the 2013 attempt by DU to impose Hindi/Modern Indian Languages (MIL) on DU students, wherein the latter had to withdraw “due to militant campaign against it undertaken by NEFIS”. NEFIS was apprehensive that compulsory imposition of Hindi would cause immense hardships for the students who belong to communities that do not speak Hindi. “This step amounts to nothing less than cultural chauvinism on part of the university administration directed against the communities from the North-East because most of them are not adept in the language,” NEFIS said

the attacks would not go unpunished. Details of the strikes were announced following an urgent meeting of the cabinet committee on security called by the Indian prime minister. Yesterday, the Islamabad SAARC summit was cancelled after India decided to boycott the summit. Soon after, Bangladesh,

Afghanistan and Bhutan followed suit, expressing their inability to attend. India is also reviewing the Indus Water Treaty under which water of six rivers is shared between the two neighbours on the basis of an agreement. India is seeking to isolate Pakistan at an international level following the military base attack.

tacks with him,” he said. “It is India’s intention to maintain peace and tranquility. But we cannot allow terrorists to operate along the LoC,” he added. “In line with Pakistan’s commitment made in 2004 to not allow terrorists to operate on its soil, we expect the Pakistan army to cooperate with us,” Singh further said. At least two ceasefire violations along the LoC in Jammu & Kashmir were reported by the Indian army in the past 24 hours. The strikes by India were in response to these violations from across the border. According to reports, the Pakistani army has denied the strikes but said two of its soldiers were killed in firing

from across the border. The exchange of fire took place in the Bhimber, Hot Spring, Kel and Lipa sectors, and lasted for about six hours early today, the Pakistani military said in a statement. Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on Thursday “condemned” the action of Indian forces. The Indian Army also confirmed there had been shelling from the Pakistani side in Jammu & Kashmir’s Poonch district. No Indian casualties were reported in the shelling. The attack comes just months after the attack, once again by Pakistani terrorists, on an air base in Pathankot, Punjab, in January this year. India Prime Minister Narendra Modi earlier pledged

DGMO Lt General Ranbir Singh said the strikes were launched on Wednesday night based on “very specific and credible information that some terrorist units had positioned themselves to infiltrate” into India. The announcement followed a meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Security chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who had vowed to avenge Uri in an earlier tweet. The operation lasted from 12.30 am to 4.30 am, with the location being 500 metres to 2 km from the LoC on the Pakistani side, sources in the Indian Army said. Seven terror launch pads were destroyed by the commandos of the Army Special Forces, who were paradropped into the Pakistani territory by ALH Dhruv choppers. The surgical strikes were recorded on cameras with drones also recording footage. Two Indian soldiers were injured from landmines during the surgical strikes. No immediate plans of another such operation for now. The entire operation was monitored through the night by Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar, NSA Ajit Doval, Army Chief Gen. DS Suhag and other top officials. The Pakistani Army has denied any surgical strike by India but has admitted that two of its soldiers were killed by Indian forces in cross-border firing in Kashmir earlier today. Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has condemned the killing of two Pakistani soldiers. Sharif warned that Pakistan’s “intent for peaceful neighbourhood should not be mistaken as our weakness”. The government had called an all-party meeting at 4 pm following the surgical strikes. Most opposition parties have welcomed India’s strike on Pakistan.

In a press release, BAN president Thungbemo Murry and general secretary Dr. Khekugha Muru appealed to all public and likeminded NGOs to support and be prepared to bear the challenges “in our quest for the Good Governance and fight against corruption.” The association while appreciating ACAUT Nagaland for busting fuel adulteration depot expressed disappointment that the “state government led by Christian leaders” turned a blind eye to such open corruption. It said no tangible result have been seen even three months after the racket was unearthed. (Cont’d on p-5)

Sumi, Lotha & Ao apex bodies not to review dissociation from Naga Hoho DIMAPUR, SEP 29 (NPN): Turning down a joint appeals by 25 legislators from the Ao, Sumi and Lotha tribes and also separate appeals by Ao and Sumi legislators; Central Nagaland Tribes Council (CNTC) at a meeting on September 29, 2016 of all its three constituent units (Ao, Sumi and Lotha) has firmly reiterated to stick to dissociation from Naga Hoho over the issue of Rongmei recognition as an indigenous tribe of Nagaland. government’s approach and that of the Naga Hoho in forming any committee to review the Rongmei recognition issue; resolved that any issue pertaining to the three

Nagaland Tribes Council slams CM’s statement

Nagaland Tribes Council (NTC) chairman, media cell Theja Therieh has hit out at the statement made by Nagaland chief minister T.R.Zeliang at the NPF seminar/workshop held in Kohima and which appeared in the local newspapers. In his statement, Zeliang maintained that since the Rongmei recognition issue was in the court after a case was filed by Zeliang People’s Organisation(ZPO), it would not be appropriate top comment on it as it was sub judice. Therieh said that by making the statement, Zeliang was “either shying away” from taking official responsibility to address the matter or was intending to “misguide the general public.” He said it was quite understandable as to why the state government was trying to take shelter under the pretext of the writ petition. Therieh alleged that T.R. Zeliang in particular, wanted to keep the recognition alive on “the most contentious issue in public domain today”. The NTC media cell chairman maintained

that the writ petition filed by the ZPO (native Zeliang people of the state) was clear that it was not a challenge on the home department notification issued on August 4,2012 which accorded recognition to Rongmei as indigenous tribe of Nagaland.. He said ZPO’s writ petition instead challenged the status given to Rongmeis as indigenous inhabitants and over which the Gauhati High Court issued interim orders restricting issuance of indigenous certificates to members of Rongmei community. Therieh said that since the ZPO did not challenge the issue of recognition of Rongmei as indigenous tribe of Nagaland, the question of it being subjudice for discussion in public domain or amounting to interference in court procedures “does not arise”. He said that rather, it was up to the state government whether to retain recognition or to revoke the order giving recognition to Rongmeis as indigenous tribe of Nagaland.
