HC order on NL House Kol, a breakthrough: Govt
Staff Reporter
D I M A P U R , M AY 3 0 (NPN): The government of Nagaland has claimed a breakthrough in the “bitter and prolonged litigation” against the contractor-cumtenant, M/s Civil Engineers Enterprises Pvt. Ltd (CEEPL), related with onesided tenancy agreement over the Nagaland House Complex annexe at Shakespeare Sarani Kolkata. DIPR on Monday, reported that the government expected a favourable judgment “against an entity (CEEPL) that is trying to exploit some loopholes in the law” by paying only a paltry sum as rent. The government attributed its confidence to the efforts by its legal team led by state Advocate General K.N. Balgopal, assisted by advocate Nitya Nambiar and advocate Vitso Rio. The genesis of the scam was after the then gov-
Petroleum dealers to join nationwide stir D I M A P U R , M AY 3 0 (NPN): All Nagaland Petroleum Dealers Union (ANPDU) Monday announced its decision to join the nationwide protest “no fuel purchase” from oil companies on May 31, 2022. ANPDU president Akokla Lucy and secretary general T Jabou Sekhose, however, stated that fuel outlets would continue to function normally. Petroleum dealers are protesting against the sudden reduction in prices by Centre and demanding compensation for losses incurred due to the reduction in excise duty. While welcoming decrease in fuel prices, ANPDU stated that “this irrational policy decision” of the Government of reducing retail selling price (RSP) suddenly and at once, has induced huge loses to the dealers. It pointed out that oil marketing companies were not incurring any losses due to sudden lowering of the prices, but it was the stock of the dealers that had depreciated in value, which was borne by the dealers. ANPDU said the petroleum fraternity had been providing excellent service to the public and government even during the pandemic. Therefore, the union maintained that reduction of fuel prices should not be at the expense of either the consumers or the dealers. ANPDU was hopeful that the government would take into account its views while making policies on fuel in future.

NASSA opposes service extension to contractual commr. & secy NLA ENPO reaffirms demand D I M A P U R , M AY 3 0 (NPN): Nagaland Assembly Secretariat Staff Association (NASSA)/Joint Action Committee said it outrightly opposed the service extension of incumbent NLA commissioner and secretary (on contract basis) Dr. P.J. Antony and also the “arbitrary Amendment” of Nagaland Legislative Assembly Secretariat (Recruitment and Conditions of Service 3rd Amendment) Rules 2022. In statement, NASSA president Pagai Ndang and general secretary Talirenla said that the association after deliberation on the matter during its emergency
general body meeting on May 23 empowered NASSA to constitute a Joint Action Committee to address the issues and to take immediate remedial action. NASSA said Antony was appointed on deputation for a period of five months w.e.f. 02.01.2020 as NLA secretary till he retired May 31, 2020. However, they said he was re-appointed with the approval of the Cabinet as commissioner & secretary (on contract basis) by upgrading the cadre post of secretary for a period of two years w.e.f. June 1, 2020-May 31, 2022 to head the administration of the NLA secretariat.
Following, Antony’s re-appointment, NASSA said a representation was submitted on June 23 23, 2020 opposing the appointment of a retired government servant, in violation of the Government Office Memorandum (vide AR-5/ASSO/98, dated 15th March 2012). Since the contract service of the incumbent was due to expire on May 31, 2022, NASSA said it had submitted a representation on April 21, 2022 to NLA Speaker requesting the latter not to further extend his service as the administrative head, since the senior most additional secretary in the
regular cadre had already fulfilled its eligibility criteria to head the administration. However, despite several representations to the NLA Speaker, NASSA said the Speaker turned a deaf ear to the demand of the association and instead moved the file recommending for service extension of the present incumbent from his level hurting the sentiments of the NASSA. To make the matter worse, NASSA said a notification dated May 18, 2022 was circulated on May 21, 2022, notifying the Amendment of the Service Rules of the NLAS. Upon going through the contents of the
notification, NASSA said they noticed that the existing rules and provisions were replaced and altered and inserted certain provisions in the existing rules and severe procedural lapses were observed in the Amendment of the Service Rules. NA S S A c l a i m e d that the whole process of Amendment was done without consulting the Cadre Review Committee/ Service Rules Amendment Committee and without considering the interest of all the stakeholders. One serious observation made in the amended rule was the insertion of a provision

D I M A P U R , M AY 3 0 (NPN): In its weather released on Monday, Nagaland State Disaster Management Authority (NSDMA) has informed that the State is expected to experience isolated heavy rainfall in the coming days and also likelihood of heavy rainfall till May 31 all over the state. This was due to the influence of an east-west trough from northwest Rajasthan to south Bihar and south-westerly winds from the Bay of Bengal to North East India at lower tropospheric levels, which is expected to be fairly widespread.
However, thunderstorm accompanied by lightning and gusty winds is very likely to occur in certain pockets in the districts of Kohima, Wokha, Kiphire, Mokokchung, Tuensang, Mon, and Longleng during the period. NSDMA has, therefore, appealed to the public to be vigilant during the monsoon period and urged not to shelter under large trees or picnic near river banks to prevent unnecessary risk to life from lightning and flash floods. All DDMAs and line departments have been asked to be on alert.
in the event of the muchanticipated Naga political solution getting delayed or if there was any unexpected prolonged delay in the negotiations. The meeting also reaffirmed the November 9, 2021 ENPO Central Executive Council (CEC) meeting resolution to continue extending support for a unified, transparent and honourable Naga political solution. The meeting further resolved that ENPO would appeal to all negotiators to conclude the Naga political talks at the earliest.
CTAN to hold sit-in protest D I M A P U R , M AY 3 0 (NPN): With the expiry of the deadline served on the state government to terminate five alleged illegal appointments of Forester-1 made under office of the Chief Conservator of Forests and Head of Forest Force, on or before May 31, the Combined Technical Association of Nagaland (CTAN) has resolved to hold a peaceful sit-in protest outside the directorate office. CTAN had issued a final reminder on May 24 to terminate the services of five (Forester-1) alleged backdoor appointees.
Naga Political Groups air views on Naga political solution Defend our land as per AP: WC, NNPGs Naga national unity being ignored: NNC (PB) DIMAPUR, MAY 30 (NPN): Working Committee of the NNPGs (WC, NNPGs) have called upon the Nagas to “insist, reassert and defend our land as per Agreed Position” and then partner with Government of India for an enduring peaceful co-existence. In a statement, WC said that despite the vigorous process of assimilation going on, WC was optimistic that there was “an opportunity for an early acceptable and honourable political solution that would pave the way for Nagas to salvage our ancient democracy, history and culture.” While referring to a paragraph from the Framework Agreement that “…it is a mat-
ter of great satisfaction that the dialogue between the Government of India and NSCN have successfully concluded...”, WC demanded to know why haven’t this great satisfaction been shared with the Nagas till date? It wondered whether the propaganda campaign had misled the Government of India in 2015? WC also asked where was the post settlement political and administrative structure if it had successfully concluded? It further went on to state that in 25 years of ceasefire and dialogue, there have been two mutually beneficial agendas at work- Assimilation and Indianisation of Nagaland and Amassing wealth of Nagaland. DIMAPUR, MAY 30 (NPN): Naga National Council (Parent Body) under the leadership of Yilow Humtsoe, Zhiongba Yimkhiung and V. Nagi, has said that efforts and concern of the organization for Naga national unity has been neglected and ignored time and again, particularly at this critical political situation and confusion prevailing in the homeland NNC (PB) information & publicity wing said that in view of the “uncertainty of the present prevailing situation”, they were compelled the point out the truth that the Government of India, concerned organisations and the state government were only taking into account the NSCN (I-
M) and the NNPGs for solution while “completely sidelining and ignoring the rest of the seven, eight Naga National Political Groups.” This shows complete disregard and the biased design of how the Naga political issue is being dealt with, which indicated “divide and rule policy”, NCC stated. NNC (PB), therefore, at this urgent and critical stage, appealed to all political groups who have been “neglected and excluded from the talk for political solution/settlement to unite effectively and stand together to defend and protect our Naga national freedom since the NNPGs is ready (Cont’d on p-8)
Avoid contradictory statements: NSCN (K) Niki DIMAPUR, MAY 30 (NPN): Niki Sumi-led faction of NSCN (K) has cautioned that everyone talking in different languages regarding Naga solution would only cause confusion and urged the facilitators and stakeholders in Naga peace talks to avoid issuing mixed and contradictory statements. In a statement, the group sought clarity whether high officials of the Central government, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi or Union Home Minister Amit Shah, had officially and publicly laid out Naga solution or the people were only giving twisted narratives as per their own perspectives and speculations. Asking which accord or agreement would be implemented,
it wanted to know whether the Centre would give the Framework Agreement to NSCN (I-M) and the Agreed Position to NNPGs. And if this would be the case, the Niki-led faction demanded that, being the third entity, it too should be given a separate solution. And by the same logic, civil society organisations (CSOs) such as UNC, CNTC, NTC, TPO, ENPO, etc, should also have their separate solutions, it added. Noting that Government of India and Nagas had a tumultuous relationship over the decades over accords and agreements that could not solve the Indo-Naga political issue and in the light of the Centre publicly stating that it was for one inclusive (Cont’d on p-8) K Y M C

Staff Reporter D I M A P U R , M AY 3 0 (NPN): Hundreds of people gathered at Bundrock Auditorium, Patkai Christian College (PCC) campus to pay their respect to late Margaret Anne Shishak at the funeral service held on Monday afternoon. Many of those who spoke at the funeral paid tributes to late Margaret and described her as the true missionary who left everything back in the United States to setup the Patkai Christian College along with her husband, Rev. Dr. Tuisem A. Shishak. They said late Margaret sacrificed the best years of her life to serve the people of Nagaland and beyond to impart music education. They also credited her for moulding renowned musicians within and outside the State. In his brief speech, Rev Dr. Tuisem Shishak, husband of late Margaret Shishak, shared the story of Margaret’s life journey. He also recalled that an editorial in one of the weekly English newspaper had mentioned that Rev.GW Supplee came from America and introduced western church music and Margert had come to complete the

Margaret Anne Shishak laid to rest
(L-R): Rev Dr. Tuisem Shishak husband of late Margaret Anne Shishak and son Machutmi (Machut) Shishak. Portrait of late Margaret Anne Shishak. mission of Rev Supplee. He said after 51 years of living and working together as a couple, it would be hard for him to comprehend that she was no more. However, Rev. Shishak said he knew it was God’s will that it was time for wife to go. Delivering the eulogy, Margaret’s son Machutmi (Machut) Shishak recalled that soon after he heard about his mother’s demise, the first words that came to his wife’s mind were the words from the Christmas Carol song-- “Rejoice, Rejoice” added that he could not agree more as he knew
that his mother was ready to be with the Lord. He also said that it was important to note that because of his mother, music education was a part of classes 9 and 10 curriculum in the state, with the view to laying foundation of music for the future generations. He further spoke about how his mother had been the indispensable right hand woman for the college by writing to supporters, prayer partners, financial supporters in the US, and also Churches and individuals. He described his late mother as “Quiet, independent and strong willed”. He also
added that solution to Naga political problem was one of the prayer points of her everyday prayer life. “To obey is better than sacrifice”, he stated, adding that this was what he learned from his mom. Delivering a speech before performing the funeral rites, NBCC general secretary, Rev Dr. Zelhou Keyho described late Margaret as a gentle soul who not only responded to God’s calling but submitted to that calling by sacrificing her all to become the music missionary for the state and NE as a whole. Zelhou said late Margaret
may not be aware of the influence and impact she had made in the region. “You don’t need to be a fiery preacher to be a missionary”, he noted. He said that Margaret stayed focused doing what she knew best, by using her music to touch lives, in her ways to serve God. Zelhou expressed confidence that late Margaret’s legacy would continue and that Nagas will have many Margarets in music. He also challenged the musically gifted to stay humble and use their talents to glorify His name. Short speeches were
also delivered by family members from board of trustees of PCC, donor villages, Alumni Association PCC, first batch of Music Vocational Students, Tangkhul Baptist Churches Association, Nagaland, family members, principal PCC and former principal of PCC. Condolence messages from chief minister, Neiphiu Rio, Shangshak Khullen Baptist Church and Naga American Foundation etc. were also read out. The funeral service was led by chaplain of PCC, Rev Dr Vichükho Ngukha, scripture read-
ing and prayer by former PRO, PCC, Rev Candid Sareo followed by congregational hymn “Great is They Faithfulness” and laying of wreaths and administration of funeral rites by NBCC general secretary, Rev Dr Zelhou Keyho. Late Margaret was laid to rest ear at the College campus. It may be noted that Margaret’s arrival in Nagaland rekindled the embers of Western Church Music in the state, further helping her students develop love for western classical music. Most of the speakers at the funeral service spoke
of how Margaret was meticulous and how she paved way for many students into the field of music. “She is and will be a true musical missionary for the state”, a member of the Alumni Association PCC stated. Margaret was born on November 25, 1941 at Washington DC, USA, who got married to Tuisem Shishak on Auguts 29, 1970 and moved to Nagaland 1973 with her husband. She studied sacred music with Organ major at Moody Bible Institute, Chicago and received her Bachelor of Music in 1964 at the University of Michigan, further completing her Masters in the following year. She had also won many awards including Young Artist Award (Organ) in 1962 and also bagged the second place at the American Guild of Organists (AGO)’s National Organ playing competition in 1966, at Atlanta, Georgia. It can further be noted that Tuisem and Margaret moved to Nagaland on 1973 and cofounded PCC in August 1972, the first liberal arts college in the state, where she served as the Music director of the college from inception till her last breath.

Left Front announces Flood situation improves in Assam; 4 1 migrant worker killed; 4 candidates for Tripura bypolls more die, over 2.9 lakh still in distress injured in Manipur blast

IMPHAL, MAY 30: A migrant worker was killed while four others were injured after an improvised explosive device (IED) exploded in Manipur’s Thoubal district early Monday. The blast took place around 1.14 am at a community hall at Khongjom Sapam Leikai. According to police, the IED was detonated through remote control. Pankaj Mahato (21) from Khariatabad succumbed to his injuries at the Thoubal district hospital. The injured workersAroop Mandal (30), Souvik Patra (18), Apoorva Mondal (25) and Rajesh Ramaanik (19) were referred to JNIMS hospital after administering first aid at Thoubal District hospital. The workers all from West Bengal’s South 24 Parganas district were engaged in construction of a water

reservoir. The incident took place while they were sleeping at the makeshift camp set up at a corner of the community hall, police said. Police suspected that the IED inside the makeshift camp have been planted by militants while the workers were sleeping. Only five workers were present in the camp when the incident happened. Soon after the blast, top officials of the Thoubal district police rushed to the spot and took stock of the situation. Forensic experts of the state police
department also conducted a spot enquiry. Manipur chief minister N Biren Singh strongly condemned the blast and challenged the perpetrator(s) to come out, “if they have guts, and shoot him, instead of targeting the innocent people”. To a query from the reporters at a news conference at his secretariat, Singh termed the target to workers as an act of cowardly people. The chief minister, then, said that the perpetrators will be booked at the earliest for the end of justice.
AGARTALA, MAY 30 (PTI): Opposition Left Front on Monday announced its candidates for the June 23 by-elections to four assembly constituencies in Tripura. Krishan Majumder, who unsuccessfully contested the Agartala constituency on a CPI(M) ticket in the 2018 assembly elections, was renominated from the same seat. Forward Bloc leader Raghunath Sarkar will contest from Town Bardowali constituency in West Tripura district. Former CPI(M) MLA Anjan Das will contest Surma seat in Dhalai district while party leader Sailendra Chandra Nath will fight the Jubarajnagar constituency in North Tripura district. “All the names were unanimously decided during a Left Front meeting today. The nominees will file their nomination papers within the next two days,” Left Front convenor Narayan Kar told reporters here. He said that Left Front
has urged the Election Commission to declare all booths as sensitive and deploy central paramilitary forces to ensure free and fair polls. Kar alleged that major elections since the 2018 assembly polls – to Lok Sabha, panchayat and civic bodies – were not free and fair. The Left Front demands webcasting of all polling booths to prevent any irregularity, he said, adding that repolling had to be ordered in 300 booths in East Tripura parliamentary constituency in 2019 Lok Sabha elections due to widespread rigging. Kar appealed to the electors to vote for Left Front candidates to “restore democracy that has been throttled during the last 51 months of BJP-IPFT rule”. Agartala and Town Bardowali assembly constituencies fell vacant as respective sitting MLAs Sudip Roy Barman and Asish Saha resigned as legislators after quitting the Congress and joining the ruling BJP in February this year.
GUWAHATI, MAY 30 (PTI): The flood situation in Assam improved on Monday with all rivers flowing below the danger mark even as four persons, including three children, lost their lives and over 2.90 lakh people continued to suffer from the deluge across six districts, an official bulletin said. With two deaths each from Nagaon and Cachar, the overall toll due to the flood and landslides reached 36, according to the daily report of the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA). Altogether, 2,90,749 people remain affected by the flood in Cachar, Dima Hasao, Goalpara, Kamrup (Metro), Morigaon and Nagaon, it said. However, all rivers in these districts were flowing below the danger level. Nagaon is the worst hit with over 3.07 lakh people in distress, followed by Cachar with 99,060 people and Morigaon with 40,843

people. Till Sunday, over 4.01 lakh people remained affected by the deluge across the six districts in the state. At least 25,372 people have taken shelter in 88 relief camps, while four relief distribution centres are currently operational, the bulletin said. Cachar has the highest number of inmates at 21,721 in relief camps, while there are 3,546 people in such temporary facilities in
Nagaon. At present, 401 villages are still under water and 16,562 hectares of crop areas have been damaged in the flood-affected districts of the state. Embankments, roads, bridges and other infrastructure have been damaged by floodwaters in Cachar, Dima Hasao and Udalguri. Altogether, 1,55,269 domestic animals have been affected due to the flood, according to the bulletin.
Bimal hospitalised in Sikkim; GJM not to contest GTA polls Meghalaya dome collapse: parties attack each other
GANGTOK/DARJEELING, MAY 30 (PTI): GJM supremo Bimal Gurung has officially ended his “indefinite” hunger strike after he has been hospitalised following a deterioration of his health while his party has decided not to contest the upcoming GTA elections. Gurung, who was staging an indefinite hunger strike at his party’s Singamari office in Darjeeling town since May 25 demanding the deferment of the June 26 Gorkhaland Territorial Administration (GTA) polls and expansion of the semi-autonomous council’s jurisdiction, fell ill on Sunday and was admitted to a hospital in the hill town in West Bengal. He had to withdraw his fast after around 100 hours due

to deteriorating health. He was shifted to Sir Thutob Namgyal Memorial (STNM) Hospital in the neighbouring Himalayan state during the day. Doctors attending Gurung said he has a high blood sugar level, which was fluctuating, and he was passing blood through his urine, which is why he was shifted to STNM Hospital. “Bimal ji has been ad-
mitted to a hospital, and on doctor’s instruction, he has withdrawn his indefinite fast. We hope he gets well soon. We have decided after a meeting of party leaders that we will not participate in the GTA polls,” Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (GJM) general secretary Roshan Giri said. Gurung had urged West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee to defer the GTA polls until the Memorandum of Proposal (MoP) submitted by the GJM was implemented in the hills. According to GJM sources, the MoP, among other suggestions, calls for honouring in letter and spirit the Memorandum of Agreement that was signed in 2011. The MoP also mentions the demand for the transfer of several
departments to the GTA, besides the inclusion of 396 Gorkha-inhabited mouzas as per the procedure laid down in the agreement. The elections to the GTA, a semi-autonomous body to administer Darjeeling hills formed in 2011, were last held in 2012. Darjeeling, often referred to as the ‘Queen of the Hills’, has witnessed several political parties over the years promising a separate Gorkhaland state and implementation of the Sixth Schedule, which grants autonomy to a tribal-inhabited region. Although the demand for separation of the region from West Bengal is over a century old, the Gorkhaland statehood movement was ignited by GNLF leader Subhash Ghisingh in 1986.

WALK- IN-INTERVIEW
DC-466/22
ITANAGAR, MAY 30 (PTI): The cabinet on Monday gave its approval to the Arunachal Pradesh Startup Policy, which was formulated to promote start-ups and to provide necessary stimulus to the entrepreneurial ecosystem in the state. The policy is targeted to facilitate the growth of at least 250 new startups over the next five years which would create significant direct and indirect employment opportunities in the state. The vision of the policy is to transform Arunachal Pradesh into a global hub for innovation and entrepreneurship by providing holistic support to local startups through proactive policy intervention and creation of a network of key ecosystem stakeholders, a CMO statement said here. With greater impetus to the ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ and ‘Atmanirbhar Arunachal’, the state government is on a mission path to boost up the start-up ecosystem with various programmes and initiatives. With passing of this policy, the government is aiming to boost innovation and research and development (R&D) capability of the state, develop institutionalized mechanisms to provide funding support, regulatory easing and preference in public procurement to startups, bolster entrepreneurship and innovation to support the state in achieving its development goals and make startups a key component of the state’s commercial fabric in the next five years. MACP would be implemented for all school teachers at par with other state government employees, by switching over from existing scheme of time bound promotion scheme to MACP scheme. “This will give them the advantage of three promotions available under MACP instead of two promotions only under Time Bound Promotion Scheme, the statement added. OPINION/EDITORIAL
Nagaland Post VOL. XXXII NO. 174 DIMAPUR, TUESDAY, MAY 31, 2022
E
8 years under Modi
ight years under prime minister Narendra Modi (2014-2019 and 2022) can be described as eventful in terms of socio-political happenings since 2014 when BJP stormed to power under Modi. In his 2014 campaign, Modi who was then Gujarat chief minister promised reform, growth, job creation, controlling inflation and equitable distribution of wealth, summarised in the slogan “achhe din”. Now eight years is a long time to check if ‘achhe din” or good days are here. In 2017 the Modi government passed the GST law which had been initiated by the previous UPA-II government. However, the opposition pointed to the falling rupee, flight of capital, plummeting GDP and a sharp drop in manufacturing activities are the result of a series of economic policy failures. Further it termed the “ deeply flawed GST” and 1,100 amendments since 2017 which have made the taxation structure cumbersome for medium and small businesses. The Modi government inherited a banking system burdened with huge bad debt. The non-performing assets (NPAs) of banks had risen for a number of reasons – from bad credit decisions to poor monitoring, connivance of bank employees, as well as cyclical business downturns. The government’s Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code (IBC), proved to be a game changer as it took NPAs head-on. To tackle the ghost of black money, the government took a momentous decision at midnight on demonetisation on November 8, 2016 but the decision was taken against the advice of two successive RBI governors, Raghuram Rajan and Urjit Patel. It was done on the wrong premise that a lot of money was black but later when 99.7% of the currency came back to the system it proved there was actually no ‘black money dividend’ – the Rs 3 lakh crore that the government expected. India’s farm crisis has worsened in the Modi years. While the Modi government carried forward decisions on various issues, yet in some, it had to back down due to political expediency such as the three controversial farm laws on which it stuck its neck out but which it had to revoke. However, the bright spot in the Modi government’s record was speeding up of highway construction, the new Bharatmala and Sagarmala projects, the building or revival of regional airports and regional air connectivity, and much work on modernising and expanding railways etc. On disinvestment the total receipts on account of disinvestment stood at Rs 13,561 crore on 31 March 2022, which is Rs 1.61 lakh crore less than the original budgeted target of Rs 1.75 lakh crore. After storming back to power in 2019, the Modi government was more aggressive with pursuing economic decisions. The Make in India’ was launched with much fanfare. However, despite opening up several sectoral caps for FDI and improving ‘ease of doing business’ ranking, manufacturing has not picked up as expected. The opposition, especially the Congress has attacked the Modi government over wholesale inflation, which it claimed was at a 30-year high and food inflation has made the life of the middle class and poor unbearable. The Congress also claimed that unemployment rate is officially touching 8 per cent, and could be much higher. Instead of creating the promised 2 crore new jobs every year, over 12 crore jobs have been lost. Be that as it may, Modi still is the most popular political leader winning 52.5% approval rate across the nation as against only 6.3% for Rahul Gandhi.
DailyDevotion Yes—But…! Lord, I will follow You, but... —Luke 9:61 Suppose God tells you to do something that is an enormous test of your common sense, totally going against it. What will you do? Will you hold back? If you get into the habit of doing something physically, you will do it every time you are tested until you break the habit through sheer determination. And the same is true spiritually. Again and again you will come right up to what Jesus wants, but every time you will turn back at the true point of testing, until you are determined to abandon yourself to God in total surrender. Yet we tend to say, “Yes, but— suppose I do obey God in this matter, what about…?” Or we say, “Yes, I will obey God if what He asks of me doesn’t go against my common sense, but don’t ask me to take a step in the dark.” Jesus Christ demands the same unrestrained, adventurous spirit in those who have placed their trust in Him that the natural man exhibits. If a person is ever going to do anything worthwhile, there will be times when he must risk everything by his leap in the dark. In the spiritual realm, Jesus Christ demands that you risk everything you hold on to or believe through common sense, and leap by faith into what He says. Once you obey, you will immediately find that what He says is as solidly consistent as common sense. By the test of common sense, Jesus Christ’s statements may seem mad, but when you test them by the trial of faith, your findings will fill your spirit with the awesome fact that they are the very words of God. Trust completely in God, and when He brings you to a new opportunity of adventure, offering it to you, see that you take it. NAGALAND POST, DIMAPUR TUESDAY, MAY 31, 2022
Post-mortem
You don’t have to defeat India to restore Naga Independence
S
ome of our Naga leaders say that it is unfortunately not possible to defeat the might of Indian military which is an accepted reality, and therefore we may put our Naga Sovereignty in cold storage and momentarily forget our Sovereignty until such time India is ready to talk about our Sovereignty. I would say, this opinion and advice of our Naga leaders are very wrong. We need not defeat or even try to defeat India for the restitution of our Naga Sovereignty just as we had in ancient times, and to proof my assertion, please refer the following few points. For ages, Nagas lived scattered but freely without any bondage. Each village was a republic by itself, selfcontained and completely independent of any other foreign countries. There were intermittent skirmishes and warfare against alien intruders. They regularly collected huge tribute payments from the neighboring kingdoms for many centuries. After inflicting some of the fiercest battles for 48 years to the intruding British Govt with effect from 1832, the then British expedition sought peace from the Nagas to end the lengthy wars, culminating in a “no more fight agreement” that was made according our tradition in our favor on 27th March, 1880 at Mezoma Nagaland. The amiable nature of the British warmed up to our people to find an acceptance as a friendly Nation to our land. To ensure a peaceful atmosphere a rule of law was established in our land with our Naga consent. Such a rule of law was never established by way of military conquest or by a treaty terms of surrender, and the Naga Sovereignty has never been compromised. However, after some years the British Govt unilaterally interpreted the
above agreement in their own favor as a small portion of the Western Naga Homeland called Naga Hills District, being made a part of the eastern edge of the British Empire in India. As such a Memorandum was submitted by the Naga Club to the Simon Commission on 10th January 1929 which had declared that all the Nagas should be left alone to determine for themselves independently as in ancient times. Therefore, under the Govt of British India, the “Excluded Area” Act of 1935 passed on the recommendations of the Simon Commission, gave a notification that the “Naga Hills” shall be treated as “EXCLUDED AREA” on 3rd March, 1935. The call to “Leave us alone” for Sovereignty as declared by the Naga Club in 1929 is thus considered the most important written public document in our unique political history. The Naga National Council (NCC) correctly read the legal, political and historical meaning and inference of the Sovereign stand of our pioneer forefathers such as Rheichalie Pienyü and others of the Naga Club who had rightly reaffirmed and expressed our inherent right to sovereign existence. Accordingly, 18 years later, on August 14, 1947, the Nagas led by the NNC re-affirmed the same position of the Naga Club by declaring our independence and for the sake of further clarification as the situation demanded, the famous plebiscite in 1951 was conducted whereby 99.9 percent of our Naga people voted in favor of Sovereignty and the NNC. The total rejection by the Nagas of the first Indian General Election, soon after matched by the massive Naga resistance in self-defense against the extremely barbaric, violent and oppressive military op-
eration for genocide in our Homeland launched by the Indian Army to snuff out the Naga struggle, abundantly demonstrated that the Nagas meant what they had declared to be their National Independence, a position made very clearly before the Simon Commission in 1929. Nagas are clear and justly proud because of their forefathers who had correctly asserted that their struggle was neither an act of secession that unlawfully or treasonously violated some solemn agreement or undertaking made by them to be a part of the new independent India at any time, nor was it an anti-India reaction as they were acting on the basis of unquestionable facts of their history and their right to choose their own future as a good neighbor of India as justified by the facts of their history. We are greatly indebted and grateful to our pioneer forefathers today that we have such an illustrious political history that we can be proud of and a struggle, whose legal and political validities are unquestionable and unchallengeable. Over and above that, our “Naga National Soul” has never been compromised or colonized till date and it shall never be forfeited at any costs. Let us take East Timor country as an example to respond to the above subject. East Timor was under Portuguese colonization for more than 400 years and then under Indonesian occupation for 24 years, after which it was recognized by the United States on May 20th, 2002 as an Independent Nation, basically to liberate Timorese from genocide perpetrated by the Indonesian Govt. It is learnt that East Timor’s economy, health and literacy rates were very low before its independence and there was only one physi-
cian doctor in the country in 2002. However, today it has a literacy rate of 87 percent among the youth and it became the third highest coffee exporting country, which generates up to 30 million USD a year. From 2005 to 2021, 23 billion USD was earned from its oil sales, all within a span of 20 years of its independence. The reason why the Naga political problem continues unheard and our Naga Nation unrecognized is because of our inability to express and capitalize on the horrendous crime of genocide repeatedly committed on our people by the Indian Armed Forces for many years till date, the latest being the Oting massacre in Mon committed on the 4th of Dec 2021. The key therefore lies within us to overcome the trouble hindering the Naga Nation from being recognized by any recognized Nation till date, which is to make such acts of aggression and oppressive atrocities, as well as our inherent factual and historical rights known to the rest of the world. The mandatory qualification to become an independent Nation and Member of United Nations (UN) under International Law is that a Nation has to be formerly recognized by any recognized and existing Independent Nation. For want of this formal recognition, our Naga Nation till date is a Nation in ‘facts and history’ but remain as an unrecognized Nation. We are not demanding independence from India or demanding recognition from India. Let us take the example of East Pakistan (now Bangladesh) to clear the cloud in our Naga political scenario. Bangladesh was then demanding independence from West Pakistan (Lahore) for various injustices including unfair prices of jute, apples, and grapes arbitrarily fixed and
Framework Agreement for Naga solution
Frame Work Agreement (F.A) – Interpretation of F.A is in confusion. Interpretation differs from two parties who signed the agreement. Why is this so ? The very name itself FA is interpreted in different ways. The GOI interpreted the Frame work Agreement (F.A ) is under the Indian constitution whereas NSCN(IM) says F.A is not framed under Indian constitution, it is for future upcoming action . GOI interpreted Sharing Sovereign power in referring to Central and State lists existing in the Indian constitution whereas the NSCN(IM) interpreted as two different Sovereign powers/nation. In my openion, F.A is for upcoming action to be carried out in future and can in no way should referred to anything that is already existing in the constitution. Recognition of unique history should meant Nagas are different and the demand for freedom is unique and can be considered for their identity. Lastly, I am pained to see some of our Naga leaders opposing the Frame Work Agreement. After over two decades of hectic consultation and thorough deliberation on Naga problems the agreement was drawn between the two negotiating parties –the GOI and NSCN(IM) .The Nagas and the GOI were happy but now some Naga leaders started criticizing and said this can not be accepted. Nagas were represented by NSCN(IM) and the GOI represented by Interlocutor. Negotiators have met all the Naga leaders of different organizations , all Naga political parties/ factions and discussed all the relevant.Naga issues. So the Negotiators knows the Naga`s problem much better than any of the Nagas. Having understood all the intricate issues, they definitely will do what is best for Nagas in general. So let us not have apprehensions to block the Frame work Agreement. Let us also understand what a difficult task had been for the parties to come thus far to an agreement. As for me, as a concerned Naga citizen, I fully support the Frame Work Agreement and any unresolved issues may be pursued politically to achieve it in future. Let God give wisdom to our Naga leaders to unite and bring a fruitful and lasting solution The opinion expressed is not for any argument nor for questioning anyone but for the interest of Nagas unity. If it hurts anyone please forgive. Wanthang Rengma, Rtd. Director, (G&M) Reader’s note: Articles or letters published in any of the columns do not
My dear Naga leaders and friends, As a concerned Naga citizen, I like to express my views on the present Naga Solution imbroglio issue. Many opinions were expressed in the news media a bout Naga solution. In a democratic country all are free to do so. Whatever said by anyone is not all wrong. Whoever expressed expressed his views is right in his own perspective and in the interest of the Nagas. However what matters most is , whether it is good for Nagas as a whole. Decision/solution that can divide Nagas is not a solution. Let us not against any Naga leaders. They are also human being and have short comings. If they made mistake let us correct them and not go on criticizing them. Majority of Nagas are Christians and should have the patient and reflect our Christian attitude.Criticising and supporting will destroy our unity and will not bring any understanding for solution. Every Naga yearns political freedom in his heart. The desire for that freedom has led us to this day. Nagas have suffered beyond imagination. Have losts many good leaders, intellectuals for the cause of Naga struggle for freedom. Many have been tortured and humiliated beyond measured. Many villages were burnt down along with granaries. Villagers chased out to jungle and die out of fear and starvation. Many were killed and left children orphan. Nagas have come along way and suffered with bitterness and anger. Therefore, Naga solution can not be taken very cheap. Some Naga leaders don’t bother how much Nagas have suffered. Solution should a mount to the price we paid. Our Naga leaders should not forget the hard earned price of the blood we paid for Nagas cause. Solution without identity is meaningless. Nagas are different from India. From the time immemorial Nagas were different. Their Origin, culture, lifestyle and their looks are quite different. During British rule Nagas were considered different from India and we were governed as Naga Hills Excluded Area. So, even after the Indian got Independence Nagas were put under External affairs which is a very important proved about Nagas unique history. Nagas origin and history being different, solution should be different. Naga Solution should also be inclusive of all Nagas who fought together and sacrifice for our Naga`s right for freedom irrespective of boundaries.
purchased by Lahore from Bangladesh and then sold in West Pakistan in tenfold, and because of such economic exploitations amongst many others, there were protests in Bangladesh. The protest was followed by many massacres such as the Bangladesh genocide of 1971, Dhaka University massacre, etc. erupting into a war-like situation which began on 25th March 1971. Since the massacres were committed by Lahore, India had joined the Bangladesh war, a battle for humanity on 3rd Dec. 1971, and the war was ended on 16th Dec. 1971 thus liberating Bangladesh from the atrocious and suppressive dominion by Lahore. It was India, under the leadership of the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi which had recognized Bangladesh as an independent Nation but not Lahore and from that very moment Bangladesh became a Member of UN fulfilling the mandatory requisite of the legality to exist as an independent nation. Bangladesh enjoys enormous support and help from the USA today under US Agency for International Development (USAID) in various fields. According to the UNCTAD’s 2019 World Investment Report, FDI inflows to Bangladesh closed at USD 3.61 billion in 2018. Practically the independence of Bangladesh was granted by India. Therefore, it is a terribly wrong and flawed ideological madness to wait for the good mood of India all these years, and be repeatedly victimized for staying in the waiting room to talk about our Naga Sovereignty with India. We must realize that there can be no “Shared Sovereignty” for the Nagas within the framework of Indian Constitution except in “Sharing the Indian Sovereignty” as an
ordinary Indian state. To cite an example, the Island of Niue is an independent island country in South Pacific Ocean having a land area of about 101 sq. miles. Island of Niue is a “Self-Governing Independent Nation State”, having free association with New Zealand and New Zealand conducts most diplomatic relations on its behalf with its consent and permit. Island of Niue has its own currency, flag, constitution, citizenship and New Zealand can come in and help Island of Niue in cases of foreign aggression, financial bankruptcy or constitutional breakdown but not without the expressed permission and consent of Niue. Because Niue is a Sovereign Nation, UN Organizations have accepted Island of Niue’s status as a freely associated Nation State, equivalent to independence for the purpose of all International laws. As such, Niue is a Member of some UN Agencies such as UNESCO, WHO, or has the bonafide legitimacy to attend UN’s conferences and Island of Niue has been a Member of the Pacific Community since 1980 as an independent Nation. Island of Niue is the only country in the world which has a “Shared Sovereignty” with another Sovereign Nation. Therefore, if the Nagas were to have a “Shared Sovereignty” with the Govt of India, then they must have their independence in the first place before entering into the “Shared Sovereignty” with any other “Sovereign Nation”. Let us not fool each other with the words “Shared Sovereignty” and “Sharing of Sovereignty” as they are two entirely different matters. Kuknalim Kuolachalie Seyie. President Naga Club at Western Angami Public Organisation General Meeting at Mezoma on 28th May 2022
Agreed Position reasserts Naga historical rights “...It is a matter of great satisfaction that the dialogue between the Government of India and NSCN have successfully concluded...” (FA 3rd Aug. 2015.). Why haven’t this great satisfaction been shared with the Nagas till date? Did the propaganda campaign misled GoI in 2015? Where is the post settlement political and administrative structure if it has successfully concluded? This is about a people’s history, land and political future, not a small boy’s chocolate to be kept inside a pocket. In 25 years of ceasefire and dialogue there have been two mutually beneficial agendas at work. 1. ASSIMILATION AND INDIANISATION OF NAGALAND: Beginning from 1997, the GoI has utilized the time and energy to assimilate Naga people, their identity, history, culture and their ancestral land, primarily Nagaland state, into a “pressure cooker” social and economic pandemonium. Both knew Indianization of Nagaland state will lead to indianization of entire Naga homeland. This will serve both southern Naga IM leaders and GoI well. Brazen utterances like, “Nagaland will cease to exist” is not a silly plan. As it is, Nagaland today is a land where tenants, with GOI’s help, dream to be landlords through hackling, harassing and brutalizing the owners with symbolic tools like Integration, flag, constitution, Pan Naga Hoho etc. Who has played into the hands of India? Since 1997, Nagaland has lost two generations and counting. What do GoI or IM leaders care? None. It suits their plan perfectly. 2. AMASSING WEALTH OF NAGALAND: Immediately after 1988 crisis, having warmly welcomed by hospitable Nagas into Nagaland, southern Naga IM civil and military officers did not own a hut then. Today, in the name of political dialogue, GoI has facilitated southern Naga IM leaders to extort our people and utilize much of Nagaland’s money to buy and develop farmlands in Dimapur, Chumoukedima and Peren districts. Constructing mansions and other assets in Dimapur, Ukhrul, in India and abroad. With such grandiose luxury
accumulated over three decades, it is very easy to hide behind powerful slogans like greater Nagalim, flag, constitution etc., to soak in the wealth of Nagaland for few more decades. This is again mutually beneficial drama. Grim reality and visible catastrophe staring at Nagaland and all Nagas cannot be prevented by wrapping oneself cozy in extra large Naga flag, unwritten Naga constitution or Naga integration. These elements will be most precious and desirable if Naga tribes rely on practical aspect rather than be a slave to sentiment and emotion. Two years after the music died and the dust settled on Framework Agreement, as demanded by the Naga tribes, the Church, Village headmen and apex Naga civil societies, WC, NNPGs, in its Agreed Position signed with GoI on 17thNovember 2017, redefined the scope and parameters of Indo-Naga political negotiations. No camera flashlights, no hype or hoopla was needed. That afternoon, the Naga delegation experienced a solemn moment with thankful hearts, sat at a round table when a historic document was signed. GoI acknowledged, “...GoI recognises the political and historical rights of the Nagas to self determine their future in consonance with their distinct identity...” God never fails. This has an unlimited political horizon to begin the negotiations. To an unwavering Naga patriot, the paragraph dutifully honoured the Naga aspiration and echoed the immortal words of Mahatma Gandhi at Bhangi Colony spoken to NNC leaders in the month of July, 1947. Within this document lay the very fabric of Naga Flag and all others, symbolic or otherwise. Despite the vigorous process of assimilation going on, WC, NNPGs have great belief that there is an opportunity for an early acceptable and honourable political solution that would pave the way for Nagas to salvage our ancient democracy, history and culture. Nagas must insist, reassert and defend our land as per Agreed Position and then partner GoI for an enduring peaceful co-existence. God Bless Nagaland! Media Cell, WC, NNPGs reflect the view of this newspaper nor that of the Editor in any manner.

NEW DELHI, MAY 30 (PTI): Prime Minister Narendra Modi has changed the political culture and ushered in a responsive and pro-active government, BJP president J P Nadda said here. Addressing a press conference here to mark eight years of the Modi government, Nadda said “seva, sushasan and garib kalyan” (service, good governance and welfare of poor) are soul of the government. Nadda, f lanked by Union ministers Smriti Irani, Dharmendra Pradhan and Anurag Thakur, also released a theme song to mark government’s anniversary that described it as the creator of modern India. He said ensuring last-mile delivery of various government schemes has been the biggest challenge of the government. “PM Modi has himself taken care of last-mile delivery,” Nadda said. Nadda also launched a special campaign, called ‘8 Years of Seva, Sushasan & Garib Kalyan’, to reach out to the youth and citizens through the NaMo App. “This special platform on the NaMo App has a lot of interactive as well as informative features. The platform has a collection of videos, graphics and articles which detail the work done by the government in eight years,” Nadda said.

Reacting to the incident, Tikait alleged that the ink attack on him was in connivance with the state government. “The local police are responsible for it and it happened due to the connivance of the government,” he told reporters in Bengaluru. Tikait, a vocal critic of the BJP, is one of the prominent faces of the 2020 farmers’ protest against the now-repealed three central agri-marketing laws. Tikait’s BKU was part of the Samyukta Kisan Morcha (SKM), which had led the over-a-year-long protest against the Centre at Delhi’s borders.

As per architect consultants, the project started in 1979 and completed in September 1984 (phase I) and May 1988 (Phase II). Mid-way during construction, the state government ran out of money. It may be mentioned that CEEPL has been in possession of the complex through one-sided rent lease agreements signed by the state under various governments. The PDA government through the state Cabinet at a meeting on February 5, 2020 authorized chief secretary to file for eviction orders through court.

the West Bengal Premises Tenancy Act which was rejected by the state government. DIPR mentioned that the renewed ‘one-sided lease agreement’ signed in 1997 gave CEEPL right to sublet the premises to third parties as per the lease deed; also entitled CEEPL to mort-gage the state property and take loans by using the property as collateral security. To top it all, DIPR mentioned that CEEPL was given 1500 sq.ft area “free of cost” for the entire duration of the 1997 lease. The High Court then passed an order on May 6, 2022 directing that the case be referred to arbitration and for which an arbitrator was appointed. DIPR said CEEPL attempted to obtain a stay but the state government opposed it on the ground that the High Court has no jurisdiction to decide on the matter anymore since the case was already referred to arbitration. It was mentioned that after the court order, the CEEPL did not allow state government officials to inspect the leased premises nor furnish details of sent deeds/taxes

In addition, the regulator said that KRAs must conduct VAPT at least once in a financial year. Alarmed by the Amendment notification, NASSA said an emergency meeting was held on May 23 and after thorough deliberations and clarifications resolved to strongly oppose the service extension of the retired officer and to repudiate the Amendment notification. Failing to fulfil the demands, the association warned of resorting to its own course of action as deemed proper. NASSA, therefore, urged upon all rightthinking citizens to condemn such arbitrary action which can create a harmful precedence under any establishment of the Government of Nagaland. “Such kind of shortsightedness and hasty decision by intellectual authority is questionable,” it added.
(From p-1) However, after the lease ended on December 31,2017 the tenant C-CEEL- approached the state government for renewal as per the West Bengal Premises Tenancy Act 1997 with the same rate but the government issued notice for enhancing the rent to Rs.2.2 crore as per prevalent market rate. The state government’s stand was the West Bengal Premises Tenancy Act 1997 does not apply to Nagaland state’s property since the Act does not apply to state and central government properties. The government viewed that the 1997 lease deed looked more like a sale deed since the lessee (CEEPL) had “supreme rights over the property. Therefore, when the state issued notice on CEEPL about lease being terminated by efflux of time for not paying the enhanced rate, CEEPL then filed a civil suit in the Calcutta High Court in 2018. In the suit, CEEPL sought relief of specific performance of the 1997 lease in which there was a clause for renewal of rent payment under

Delhi recorded 17.8 mm of rainfall till 5.30 PM, according to the weather department. A 50-year-old man died in the Jama Masjid area in centra Delhi after
a portion of a balcony of a neighbouring house fell on him during the strong winds when he was standing outside his residence. Sawant, reacting to increased incidents of crime in the past few days in the state, said that the home department could detect one case at Mapusa in North Goa within 24 hours because of tenant verification. “Henceforth, those who stay in Goa without doing tenant verification, action would be taken against them. Not only on tenants, but action will also be taken against the house owners too,” Sawant told reporters here. The NDA is the joint services academy of the armed forces where cadets receive training together before they go to their respective service academies for further pre-commissioning training. All the three (defence) services have invested heavily in the next-generation war-fighting machines, he noted. “You, as future operators of these highly potent systems, need to be fully conversant with them which can be achieved only through rigorous training, dedication and a professional approach,” he said. As the world is embracing newer technologies and gradually moving away from conventional
war fighting methods, it is “imperative for all of us to adapt to the change rapidly so that we can innovate and refine our processes of war fighting”. “Warfare is undergoing a fundamental change with the emergence of new technology and radically newer doctrines. Nitish Kumar drops close confidant RCP Singh from RS Mamata rebukes DM over govt staffers siphoning of revenue
PATNA, MAY 30 (AGENCIES): The Janata Dal (United) has put a question mark on the political future of its senior party leader, R.C.P. Singh, by denying him another term in the Rajya Sabha. This would mean that Singh – the party’s only representative in the Union Cabinet – will now have to resign as Steel Minister since his Upper House tenure ends in June. JD(U), the r uling party in Bihar, has instead chosen to nominate littleknown Kheru Mahto from the seat in Jharkhand. The JD(U) leadership explained that the decision to nominate Mahto – Jharkhand unit state president and one-time MLA from Hazaribhagh –

A lower court in the city had ordered a video survey of the complex after the plea was filed by the women. Lately, Singh also ignored several functions held by the Bihar chief minister at his official residence, like an ‘Iftaar’ party. Though BJP is a political ally, Nitish Kumar was still suspicious of such open display of camaraderie, party sources said. They, however, denied the partnership in Bihar was under any threat.
Hijab row escalates in K’taka; students of Mangalore University approach DC
MANGALURU (KTK), MAY 30 (PTI): The Hijab row escalated in Karnataka on Monday with some girl students of the Mangalore University approaching the deputy commissioner of Dakshina Kannada district seeking permission to wear the Islamic headscarves on the campus. The 12 students who renewed the demand for wearing Hijab inside educational institutions on
Saturday, came to the University College on Monday as well. Since there is a dress code in place for the students, the university authorities did not allow them to enter on Saturday as well as on Monday. After they were told to approach the deputy commissioner of the district, three students went to his office and submitted a memorandum. The deputy commis-
sioner Dr Rajendra K V said the college authorities barred their entry after the university syndicate decided not to allow any cloth, whether Hijab or saffron scarves, that could disturb peace and cited the recent High Court ruling which said Hijab is not an essential religious practice and dress code should be followed in the college where the uniform dress has been prescribed.

The Muslim side, on Monday, presented their argument and registered their point-to-point objections to the Hindu side’s plea in court. Five Hindu women have sought round-the-year access to offer prayers at the Shringar Gauri Sthal in the Kashi VishwanathGyanvapi complex. The Muslim side has

Singh, a 1984-batch IAS officer, was close to Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar since his days as Union Railways Minister. He had also served Kumar as principal secretary. Leaders, however, pointed out that things went south once Singh got too close to the BJP. I am giving so much to the people, still, they need so much. Why have people grown so greedy these days?” Banerjee said. During the meeting, a representative of Hura block

alleged that the revenue collected from the brick kilns were not reaching the government. He alleged that those employed to collect the revenue were siphoning it off. “Earlier, I used to think that only politicians are thieves...they earn a bad name. But those involved in government work for the people must have goodwill. If someone has made a mistake, I suggest them to correct it,” the chief minister said. Banerjee, who is on an administrative tour to Purulia, also advised officers to lodge a police complaint if they believe that are being “framed”. The chief minister,
who was addressing an administrative review meeting at Rabindra Bhavan here on Monday, hit out at the Purulia district administration for its lackadaisical attitude, delaying the completion of several projects as well as delivering services to the tribals here. She directed the administration to immediately solve the problems. S h ow i n g p i c t o r i a l documents of projects that were yet to be started despite being commissioned long back, Banerjee said her office has been getting complaints from residents alleging work remains unfinished as middlemen were demanding money for completion.

open Indo-Pacific important aspect Modi releases benefits under PM Cares Free, of India’s maritime security: Rajnath NEW DELHI, MAY 30 (AGENCIES/PTI): Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday released benefits under the ‘PM Cares for Children’ scheme that supports those who lost their parents/guardians during Covid-19 pandemic. On the occasion, Modi transferred scholarships to the schoolchildren and handed over a passbook of PM Cares for children, and a health card under Ayushman Bharat - Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana. “I know how difficult the situation is for people who have lost their family members during the Covid-19 pandemic. This programme is for the children who lost their parents during the pandemic. The PM Cares for Children Scheme is an attempt to such children,” Modi said at the video conference. Modi said if someone needs an education loan for professional courses, for higher education, then the PM-Cares will help in that too. Rs. 4,000 have

also been arranged for them every month through other schemes for other daily needs. According to Prime Minister’s Office (PMO), the objective of the scheme is to ensure comprehensive care and protection of children in a sustained manner by providing them boarding and lodging, empowering them through education and scholarships, equipping them for self-sufficient existence with financial support of Rs.10 lakh on attaining 23 years of age and ensuring their wellbeing through health insurance. An online portal by the government was launched
to register the children. The portal is a single-window system which facilitates the approval process and all other assistance for children. “When such children complete their schooling, more money would be needed for future dreams. For this, the youth from 18-23 years of age will get a stipend every month and when they are 23 years old, they will get Rs.10 lakh,” Modi added. Children are also being given Ayushman Health Card through the PM Cares for Children. From this, free facility of treatment up to Rs.5 lakh will also be available, he said. “The PM Cares fund helped a lot in preparing hospitals, buying ventilators, and setting up oxygen plants during the pandemic. Because of this many lives could be saved. Those who left us untimely, today this fund is being used for their children, for the future of all of you,” he added. 14 beneficiaries were selected from Nagaland.
Country getting out of ‘vicious cycle’ it was trapped in before 2014: PM Modi
India is getting out of the “vicious cycle” of corruption, scams, nepotism, terrorist organisations spreading across the country and regional discrimination, in which it was trapped in before 2014, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Monday, asserting that his government’s eight years were dedicated to the welfare of the poor. The prime minister also expressed happiness that when his government is completing its eight years, the confidence of the country and the self-confidence of its people is unprecedented. The prime minister was speaking at an event during which he released benefits under the PM-CARES for Children Scheme. Modi said that coming out of the negative impact of Covid, India has become one of the fastest growing economies in the world. The world is looking
towards the country with new hope and faith, he said. “The country is getting out of the vicious cycle of corruption, scams worth thousands of crores, nepotism, terrorist organisations spreading across the country, and regional discrimination, in which it was trapped before 2014,” Modi said in an apparent reference to previous Congress dispensations. “This is also an example for you children that even the most difficult days too pass”, he said. Referring to welfare policies like Swachh Bharat Mission, Jan Dhan Yojna or Har Ghar Jal Abhiyan, Modi said the government is moving with the spirit of Sabka Saath Sabka Vikas, Sabka Vishwas and Sabka Prayas. The last eight years have been devoted to the welfare and service of the poor, he said.

president had personally committed to accommodating me in RS in 2003/04 when I joined Congress party on her behest we weren’t in power then. “Since then it’s been 18 years (but) they didn’t find an opportunity, Mr Imran is accommodated in RS from Maharashtra. I ask am I less deserving,” she tweeted. However, both Khera and Nagma later congratulated the nominees. Seeking to do some damage control, Khera also posted a 1.41-minute video on Twitter, saying, “Getting blinded by personal ambition is a luxury you and I cannot afford in this fight. This is a fight bigger than any ambition.” He quoted a couplet from Harivansh Rai Bachchan’s poem “Madhushala”, saying one should not be afraid of getting burnt. He hailed the Congress and thanked the people for standing with him and cited the example of Sonia Gandhi, who sacrificed the top post of prime minister. Imran Pratapraghi, when asked about his candidature said, “There is no opposition to my candidature and the entire party stands united. The entire country comes within Maharashtra and there is no question of outsider or insider.” “There is no question of any opposition to the decision of Congress chief Sonia Gandhi and the entire
party stands together behind her decision. We will win the Rajya Sabha election.” When asked about Nagma’s criticism, he said, “Have you seen another tweet by her congratulating everyone nominated to the Rajya Sabha. Please see that tweet, it is more beautiful.” Responding to Nagma Morarji’s tweet, Congress leader Acharya Pramod Krishnam said that the penance of Salman Khurshid, Tariq Anwar and Ghulam Nabi Azad was of over 40
jasthan, Chattisgarh (both election-bound) and Maharashtra units by denying nomination to locals for RS,” Malviya said on Twitter. “The Gandhis can’t see beyond their coterie,” he said. Maharashtra Congress chief Nana Patole, however, said that every worker “accepts the decision of our leader Sonia Gandhi”. “Congress is a democratic party and anyone can feel that he is more deserving, but everyone accepts the decision of the high command and Imran Pratapgarhi will be elected as the party’s Rajya Sabha nominee from Maharashtra,” he said. Another Congress leader Milind Deora put out a cryptic tweet, saying, “The optimist-pessimist test.” He put out a picture of light signage with the writing, “You matter Don’t give up” if read vertically and “You don’t matter Give up” if read horizontally.

NEW DELHI, MAY 30 (PTI): Congress leaders P Chidambaram, Jairam Ramesh, Vivek Tankha and Imran Pratapgarhi filed their nomination papers on Monday for the June 10 election to Rajya Sabha, amid voices of discontent emerging from within the party over the choice of candidates. Congress president Sonia Gandhi had on Sunday night cleared the names of 10 party nominees, including Ajay Maken, Randeep Surjewala and Mukul Wasnik, for election to the upper house. Soon after the announcement of the candidates, actress-turnedpolitician Nagma Morarji and the party’s national spokesperson Pawan Khera made clear their disappointment over not being nominated. The BJP also used it to take a swipe at the Congress leadership, saying the Gandhis cannot think beyond their coterie. Nagma raised questions over the candidature of minority cell head Imran Pratapgarhi, while Congress leader Acharya Pramod Krishnam said that suppression of talent is a “suicidal step” for the party. Sanyam Lodha, an adviser to Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot, said the Congress should reconsider its decision to field candidates to the Rajya Sabha from outside the state. “Shayad meri tapasya mein kuch kami reh gayi (Maybe my penance fell short),” Khera tweeted. Responding to it, Nagma said, “My 18 years of penance fell short before Imran bhai (Imran Pratapgarhi, who has been fielded from Maharashtra). “Sonia Ji our Congress

Shortly after the Congress announced its candidates, Lodha had tweeted, “The Congress party should explain why no Congress leader/worker from Rajasthan is nominated for the Rajya Sabha elections,” with the hashtag ‘Congress Sankalp’. He cautioned the Congress’ top brass that the party would suffer a “huge blow” in the assembly elections next year if it failed to accommodate leaders from Rajasthan in the Upper House. BJP IT cell head Amit Malviya also took to Twitter to criticise the Congress leadership over Rajya Sabha nominations, saying it has led to discontentment. “The Chintan Shivir clearly didn’t serve any purpose. Singh said India has a clear interest in creating a rule-based, peaceful and stable environment in the region, saying such an atmosphere is essential for both regional and global prosperity. The defence minister was speaking after inaugurating a three-day conference of the top commanders of the Indian Coast Guard (ICG). Singh also said that India has not witnessed any terrorist activities originating from the sea route since the 2008 Mumbai attacks in view of the continuous enhancement of coastal security. Nepal plane crash: 21 bodies recovered
KATHMANDU, MAY 30 (PTI): Rescuers on Monday recovered 21 bodies from the wreckage site of the Tara Air plane that crashed in Nepal’s mountainous Mustang district on Sunday with 22 people on board, including four Indians, minutes after taking off from the tourist city of Pokhara, officials said. The turboprop Twin Otter 9N-AET plane went missing on Sunday morning in the mountainous region of Nepal. The Canadian-built plane, flying from Pokhara to the popular tourist town Jomsom in central Nepal, was carrying four Indians, two Germans and 13 Nepali passengers, besides a three-member Nepali crew. Rescuers have recovered 21 bodies from the crash site, said a statement issued by the Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal (CAAN). One person was still missing, the statement added. It said that 10 bodies were brought to Kathmandu, while 11 bodies were taken to the base camp from where the rescue operation is being coordinated. Sudarshan Bartaula, a spokesper-

son for Tara Air, said that search and rescue teams are scouring the area for the remaining person. President Bidya Devi Bhandari and Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba have condoled the death of crew members and passengers in the plane crash. The government has formed a five-member commission of inquiry headed
by senior aeronautical engineer Ratish Chandra Lal Suman to find out the cause of the Tara Air plane crash. A preliminary investigation revealed that the aircraft had crashed into the mountains after it swerved to the right, instead of turning to the left due to inclement weather, CAAN DirectorGeneral Pradeep Adhikari
said during a meeting of the International Committee of the Parliament on Monday. Earlier in the afternoon, the CAAN in a statement said that the plane had crashed at Thasang-2 in Mustang district at the height of 14,500 feet. Inda Singh, who was on his way to clear a blocked road, found out that the
plane had crashed. He said the plane was found in a completely damaged condition, MyRepublica newspaper reported. “All the passengers on the aircraft are found dead,” he was quoted as saying by the paper. “The dead bodies are intact and the faces of all victims are recognisable.” He said there was no fire on the aircraft. The aircraft could have met with an accident after hitting a cliff nearby. Search and rescue teams from Nepal Army, Air Dynasty, Kailash Helicopter and Fishtail Air Helicopter and other rescue workers were deployed at the crash site. The 9N-AJR Helicopter of Fishtail Air was the first to land at the crash site and confirmed it at 8:10 am today, according to the CAAN. The airline’s passengers list identified four Indians as Ashok Kumar Tripathy, his wife Vaibhavi Bandekar (Tripathy) and their children Dhanush and Ritika. The family was based in Thane city near Mumbai. The relatives of the Indian victims were waiting in Kathmandu for identification of the bodies.

First monkeypox death in Nigeria in 2022; 21 cases confirmed
ABUJA, MAY 30 (AP): Nigeria has recorded its first death from monkeypox this year in a patient with underlying medical conditions, the diseases control agency said. The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention announced Sunday that in 2022 it has confirmed 21 out of 66 suspected cases of the disease, which is usually endemic in Nigeria and other parts of West and Central Africa. “The death was reported in a 40-year-old patient who had underlying co-morbidity and was on immunosuppressive medications,” the Nigeria CDC said. Nigeria has not had an outbreak of monkeypox since September 2017 but it continues to report sporadic cases of the disease. At least 247 have been confirmed in 22 of its 36 states since then with 3.6% fatality rate, the disease control agency said. A spike in monkeypox cases reported in Europe and the U.S. has generated concerns among those
countries, many of whom have not recorded a single case of the disease in years. Nearly 200 cases of the disease have been reported in more than 20 countries not usually known to have outbreaks, the World Health Organization said. Monkeypox has not previously triggered widespread outbreaks beyond Africa, where it is endemic. One of the new cases in the U.K. was recorded in a man days after his arrival from Nigeria on May 4. Nigeria has recorded six confirmed cases of the disease the British citizen left the country. Dr. Ifedayo Adetifa, head of the country’s
Center for Disease Control, told The Associated Press that nothing shows the British citizen contracted the disease in Nigeria and that the country remains prepared to respond to an outbreak of monkeypox. “The biggest challenge that you have with a disease such as monkeypox is that it is uncommon and the perceived risk by the population about how dangerous this condition is has been very low … that is why ... we have conducted awareness training and advocacy training to increase the level of awareness of health care workers,” Adetifa said.
Terror groups maintaining camps in Afghan HK’s next leader receives official appointment letter
U N I T E D NAT I O N S, MAY 30 (PTI): Pakistanbased terror groups such as Jaish-e-Mohammed and Lashkar-e-Taiba, led by 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks mastermind Hafiz Saeed, maintain their training camps in some provinces of Afghanistan and some of them are directly under the Taliban control, according to a UN report. The 13th report of the Analytical Support and Sanctions Monitoring Team cites a UN Member State as saying that Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM), a Deobandi group ideologically closer to the Taliban “maintains eight training camps in Nangarhar, three of which are directly under Taliban control.” India’s Permanent Representative to the UN Ambassador T S Tirumurti, in his capacity as Chair of the Taliban Sanctions Committee, also known as the 1988 Sanctions Committee, transmitted the report to be “brought to the attention of the members of the Security Council and issued as a document of the Council.” The report said that Jaish-e-Mohammed, a Deo-
Representational image.
bandi group led by Masood Azhar, is ideologically closer to the Taliban. Qari Ramazan is the newly appointed head of JeM in Afghanistan. It added that Lashkare-Taiba (LeT) is described in the previous Monitoring Team reports as having provided finance and training expertise to Taliban operations. “Within Afghanistan, according to one Member State, it is led by Mawlawi Yousuf,” the report said, adding that in October 2021, according to one Member State, another LeT leader, Mawlawi Assadullah, met with Taliban Deputy Interior Minister Noor Jalil. The same Member State reported that in January 2022, a Taliban delegation visited a training camp used
by LeT in the Haska Mena district of Nangarhar. “The group was said to maintain three camps in Kunar and Nangarhar. Previous LeT members have included Aslam Farooqi and Ejaz Ahmad Ahangar (a.k.a. Abu Usman al-Kashmiri), both of whom joined ISILK,” the report said. Another Member State said that there was no evidence of the presence of JeM and LeT in the region as a consequence of effective security operations targeting them, according to the report. The 13th report of the Analytical Support and Sanctions Monitoring Team of the Taliban Sanctions Committee is the first report since the August 15 takeover of Kabul by the Taliban.
It notes that the period between then and April 2022 has seen the Taliban consolidate control over Afghanistan, appointing 41 United Nations-sanctioned individuals to the Cabinet and other senior-level positions in their de facto administration. They have favoured loyalty and seniority over competence, and their decision-making has been opaque and inconsistent. The report further said that the Tehrik-e Taliban Pakistan (TTP) constitutes the largest component of foreign terrorist fighters in Afghanistan, with their number estimated to be several thousand. Other groups include the Eastern Turkistan Islamic Movement (ETIM), Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan, Jaish-e-Mohammed, Jamaat Ansarullah and the LeT, with each numbering in the few hundreds. It said the TTP, led by Mufti Noor Wali Mehsud, has “arguably benefitted” most of all the foreign extremist groups in Afghanistan from the Taliban takeover. It has conducted numerous attacks and operations in Pakistan.
HONG KONG, MAY 30 (AP): Hong Kong’s next leader, John Lee, received an official letter of appointment from Beijing on Monday, a month before he is to take over the leadership of the semi-autonomous city. Lee received his letter of appointment from Chinese Premier Li Keqiang, who congratulated him on his selection as Hong Kong’s next chief executive. He also met with Chinese President Xi Jinping. Xi said Lee “loves the country and Hong Kong” and has “contributed in terms of protecting national security and protecting Hong Kong’s prosperity and stability.” “You have the affirmation and the trust of the central government,” Xi said. Xi said the “one country, two systems” framework under which Britain handed Hong Kong over to China in 1997 has been “universally recognized” as a success. Critics say the framework, which provides Hong Kong with semi-autonomity and special freedoms for 50 years, is threatened by growing restrictions imposed by Beijing.
UK’s new ‘High Potential Individual’ student visa route to benefit Indians
LONDON, MAY 30 (PTI): Graduates from the world’s top 50 non-UK universities, including Indian students, can now come and work in Britain through a new High Potential Individual (HPI) visa route launched in London on Monday. In a joint announce-
ment, Indian-origin UK Cabinet ministers Rishi Sunak and Priti Patel said the new “exciting” category under the post-Brexit pointsbased system is aimed at attracting the “best and brightest” talent from around the world, regardless of nationality.
India is free but we are slaves: Imran Khan ISLAMABAD, MAY 30 (IANS): Severely criticising Pakistan’s incumbent federal coalition government, former Prime Minister Imran Khan said the “American slaves” had increased the prices of petroleum products, while India bought cheap oil from Russia and reduced prices. “It showed India is free but we (Pakistanis) are slaves,” The News quoted the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman as saying while addressing a workers convention at Sheikabad, Charsadda, on Sunday. He lauded India for following an independent foreign policy, saying it imported crude oil from Russia despite American sanctions. “ O u r g o ve r n m e n t signed an agreement with Russia to buy oil at 30 per cent discounted rates. Our government was dislodged under a conspiracy,” he said.
Successful applicants will be given a two-year work visa, with a three-year visa offered to those with a PhD, without the need for a specific job offer in hand. “This new visa offer means that the UK can continue to attract the best and brightest from across
the globe,” said Chancellor Rishi Sunak. “The route means that the UK will grow as a leading international hub for innovation, creativity and entrepreneurship. We want the businesses of tomorrow to be built here today,” he said.
“The UK is already home to some of the most ground-breaking start-ups, on the forefront of R&D and an incredibly diverse and exciting place to live – come and join in,” added UK-born Sunak, himself an MBA from Stanford University in the US.
In this image taken from video, Hong Kong Chief Executive-elect John Lee, left, meets with Chinese President Xi Jinping May 30, 2022 in Beijing. (AP/PTI)
Lee thanked Xi for trusting him with the position and said he would do all that he can to live up to the expectations of Beijing and the Hong Kong people. Premier Li also expressed full support for Lee and urged him to develop Hong Kong’s economy and improve the livelihoods of its people. Lee’s visit to Beijing comes weeks after he won an uncontested election earlier this month, gaining over 99% of all votes cast by an election committee made up largely of pro-Beijing members. It is customary for the chief executive-elect to visit
Beijing after winning election to receive a latter of appointment from Beijing. Lee flew to Beijing on Saturday for a four-day visit. Lee’s appointment comes during a continuing political crackdown in the city nearly three years after anti-government protests in 2019. Critics say Beijing has tightened its grip over Hong Kong and rolled back freedoms with the imposition of a tough new national security law and changes to its electoral laws that shut out pro-democracy candidates from running for office. Lee, a Beijing loyalist,
is known for his support of the national security law, which outlaws subversion, secession, terrorism and foreign collusion to intervene in the city’s affairs. Over 150 people have been arrested under the law since it came into effect in June 2020. Prior to winning the election, Lee was the city’s No. 2 official. He spent most of his civil service career in the police force and later in the security bureau. Lee is expected to be sworn in as Hong Kong’s new chief executive on July 1, the 25th anniversary of Hong Kong’s handover to China.

Russian, Ukrainian troops fight in key city Indian-origin British cop could sue govt of Mariupol that trapped residents and led to some of the worst suffering of the war. While tens of thousands are believed to have died in Mariupol, Striuk estimated that 1,500 civilians have died in his city since the war began, from Russian attacks as well as from the dire conditions, including a lack of medicine or medical treatment. The Ukrainian military said Russian forces reinforced their positions on the northeastern and southeastern outskirts of Sievierodonetsk, 145 kilometers (90 miles) south of the Russian border in an area that is the last pocket of Ukrainian government control in Luhansk province. Luhansk Gov. Serhiy Haidai said the Russians were also pushing toward nearby Lysychansk. He said two civilians were killed and another five were wounded in the latest Russian shelling. Sievierodonetsk and Lysychansk sit on either
side of the strategically important Siverskiy Donetsk River. The Russian advance in Sievierodonetsk and Lysychansk is part of an allout push — executed without regard for personnel and equipment losses, said Ukrainian military analyst Oleh Zhdanov. “There is an impression that Russia has set the goal to seize Donbas at any cost,” said Zhdanov. “The Kremlin has reckoned that it can’t afford to waste time and should use the last chance to extend the separatist-controlled territory because the arrival of Western weapons in Ukraine could make it impossible.” The Ukrainians hope they can hold the Russians off long enough for them to run out of steam — or for more Western weapons to arrive. But Mykola Sunhurovskyi, a military expert at the Kyiv-based Razumkov Center think tank, said those are taking a long time to arrive — given the Russians an opening.

Brazil rain: Death toll reaches 56
K R A M ATO R S K (UKRAINE), MAY 30 ( A P ) : Ru s s i a n t r o o p s pushed farther into a key eastern Ukrainian city and fought street by street with Kyiv’s forces Monday in a battle the mayor said has left the city “completely ruined” and driven tends of thousands from their homes. Militar y analysts painted the battle as part of a race against time for the Kremlin, which they said wants to complete its capture of the industrial Donbas region before more Western arms arrive to bolster Ukraine’s defences. Weapons from the West have already helped Kyiv’s forces thwart a Russian advance on the capital in the early weeks of the war. That failure forced Moscow to withdraw, regroup, and pursue a more limited objective of seizing the Donbas, where Moscow-backed separatists already held swaths of territory and have been fighting Ukrainian troops for eight years.
COLOMBO, MAY 30 (PTI): The World Bank is planning to disburse USD 700 million to crisis-ridden Sri Lanka by re-purposing its existing loans, a move that will help the island nation grappling with an unprecedented economic crisis much-needed breathing space till a bailout package with the IMF is worked out, media reports said on Monday. Sri Lanka is nearing bankruptcy and has severe shortages of essentials from food, fuel, medicines and cooking gas. For months, citizens have been forced to stay in long lines to buy the limited stocks. The World Bank Country Manager Chiyo Kanda met Sri Lankan Foreign Minister last week and assured him that the agency will work with the Asian Development Bank (ADB), Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) and the UN office to “re-purpose their already committed

In recent days, the fighting has focused on Sievierodonetsk in a battle Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has called “indescribably difficult.” Relentless Russian artillery barrages have destroyed critical infrastructure and damaged 90% of the buildings, and power and communications have been largely cut to a city that was once home to 100,000 people. “The number of victims is rising every hour,
but we are unable to count the dead and the wounded amid the street fighting,” Mayor Oleksandr Striuk told The Associated Press in a phone interview, adding that Moscow’s troops advanced a few more blocks toward the city center. “The city has been completely ruined,” he added, and only about 12,000 to 13,000 residents remain, sheltering in basements and bunkers to escape the Russian bombardment — a situation that recalls the siege

Consequently, Kanda has assured Peiris that the global lender would disburse USD 700 million to Sri Lanka in these difficult
times in the coming months, the report said. Earlier this month, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) said it remains committed to assisting Sri Lanka in line with its policies, the Colombo Gazette reported. Technical-level discussions with Sri Lanka have commenced. They will continue in order to prepare for policy discussions once a new government has been formed, the IMF was quoted as saying by the report.
“On our virtual mission during May 9-23, discussions at the technical level have just started and continued as planned so as to be fully prepared for policy discussions once a new government has been formed,” the IMF said in a statement. The IMF also said that it is following developments in Sri Lanka closely and is concerned about rising social tensions and violence. In April, the two sides convened their first round of talks at the IMF headquarters in Washington. Sri Lanka is hoping for a Rapid Finance Instrument (RFI) facility as well as a larger Extended Fund Facility (EFF) from the international financial body to help it deal with its foreign currency shortages, which have triggered an economic crisis. In the last meeting, the IMF assured to help the country with an amount of USD 300 million to USD 600 million.
BRASILIA, MAY 30 (IANS): The death toll due to the heavy rain in Brazil’s northeastern state of Pernambuco has increased to 56, disaster management authorities said. Fifty-six people are still missing and nearly 4,000 have been evacuated due to the floods and landslides caused by the heavy rains, Xinhua news agency quoted the authorities as saying on Sunday. Recife City, the capital of Pernambuco state, is the hardest hit with 30 deaths. President Jair Bolsonaro tweeted that he will visit Recife on Monday to assess the situation. H e av y d ow n p o u r has also lashed the neighbouring state of Alagoas, where two people died and around 7,000 were displaced due to the flooding. In nine municipalities of Pernambuco, local authorities have declared a state of emergency.

BRUSSELS, MAY 30 (AP): European Union leaders will gather Monday in a new show of solidarity with Ukraine, but divisions over whether to target Russian oil in a new series of sanctions are exposing the limits of how far the bloc can go to help the war-torn country. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who will address the 27 heads of state and government by videoconference in the evening, has repeatedly demanded that the EU target Russia’s lucrative energy sector and deprive Moscow of billions of dollars each day in supply payments. But Hungary is leading a group of countries — along with Slovakia, the Czech Republic and Bulgaria — that rely on Russian oil and can’t afford to take such steps. Hungary gets more than 60% of its oil from Russia and 85% of its natural gas. Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban has insisted that an oil embargo should not be discussed at the summit. But following a meeting of ambassadors before the summit’s start, there was a glimmer of hope in EU circles that a compromise could be reached. “The European Council aims to reach a political agreement today on an embargo on Russian oil,” an EU diplomat said on condition of anonymity because of the sensitive nature of the negotiations.

Diet and Nutrition: Why Cucumbers Are Good for You disease. And some research seems to show that the unique mix of nutrients in cucumber seeds could help improve your cholesterol numbers, which could have a direct impact on heart health. So skip those “seedless” cucumbers and go for the real thing!
Keeps You Regular
The high water content of cucumbers helps keep you regular and combats constipation. Eat lots of healthy foods like cucumber, and you leave less room for high-salt and highfat foods that can slow your digestion. Plus, the hydration boost you get from all that water in cucumbers can prevent you from getting stopped up (constipation). They also have a fair amount of fiber, which aids in keeping things moving along.
Hydration
Since cucumbers are mostly water they are great for helping to keep you hydrated. The average adult takes in about 3 quarts (12 cups) of water every day. Around a quarter of that typically comes from food. Cucumbers are an excellent source. Each one is about 95% water. That’s important because your cells need enough water to work right. Without it, you can get dizzy and sick. In serious cases, you may need to go to the hospital for treatment.
Fermented Pickles
You can make your own pickles at home by putting cucumbers in salt water solution until they ferment. To ferment cucumbers, you leave them in a salt solution until bacteria start to feed on
Keeping a Healthy Weight
Cucumbers are a low energy density food that may help you eat less and lose weight. All that water in cucumbers doesn’t just hydrate your cells. It also fills your belly, and that may help you eat less. A cup of sliced cucumbers has just 16 calories. That means it has very low “energy density.” People who eat more foods with low energy density often find it easier to lose weight.
Nutrients
Nutrients in cucumbers include vitamins K and C as well as B vitamins and minerals. Cucumbers are packed with them. In just a single cup of cucumber slices, you’ll get 14% to 19% of the vitamin K you need for the day. You’ll also get vitamins B and C along with minerals like copper, phosphorus, potassium, and magnesium.
Rock star Ronnie Hawkins dies at 87 after battling long-term illness
ock and roll legend Ronald Hawkins, professionally known as Ronnie Hawkins, who launched the Torontobased American-Canadian rock ensemble ‘The Band’, died after a prolonged illness at the age of 87, reports ‘Variety’. His wife, Wanda confirmed his death to ‘The Canadian Press’ as she said, “He went peacefully and he looked as handsome as ever.” ‘Variety’ states, the musician, revered by his peers and followers as ‘The Hawk’ grew his reputation with his highest-charting single ‘Mary Lou’ which reached No. 26 in the U.S. charts. The Hawk was famous for his stage presence, characterised by his robust vocals and humorous exchanges, including his signature ‘camel walk’ dance.
The Arkansas native began touring in Ontario in 1958. By the time he was featured in a CBC Telescope documentary, he was beloved by Canadian artists and audiences. A s a yo u n g m a n , Hawkins enlisted in the National Guard and the army, but his main interest was always music as he began playing in local bars in 1953. In 1959, Hawkins scored a deal with Roulette Records, leading to hits like ‘Mary Lou’ and an appearance on ‘American Bandstand’. As one of the early pioneers and legends of that instinctive combination of country soul and blues known as Rockabilly, Hawkins’ catalog spans a unique hybrid of rustic sounds as he worked with many bands over the years. However, it was The Band’s
specific five who would help establish the Hawk’s reputation in music lore. A s p e r ‘ Va r i e t y ’ , Hawkins recorded and collaborated with several of the greats from Duane Allman to Bob Dylan whom he portrayed in Dylan’s “Renaldo and Clara” film. Notoriously, John Lennon and Yoko Ono were guests of his farm during an extended Toronto stay in 1969. His mentorship of Garth Hudson, Rick Danko, Richard Manuel, Levon Helm and Robbie Robertson would eventually lead the band to back Bob Dylan for his around-the-world 1966 tour. The five all met playing with Hawkins, who famously hired them one by one to perform alongside him across rural North America as “the Hawks,” until their split. (IANS)

Blood Sugar Control
Cucumbers have been shown to decrease the production of ROS and ROC in animal studies. High blood sugar can help create too many cell-damaging substances known as ROS and ROC. Cucumbers have shown some promise, mostly in animal studies, in controlling this problem. Rats that ate more cucumbers made less ROS and ROC. More studies on people are needed to back up these results.
Antioxidants
Antioxidants help protect your cells from free radicals that can damage your body. These feisty little chemicals help protect your cells from damage due to substances that form in your body called “free radicals.” Cucumbers have a unique set of antioxidants, including flavonoids, lignans, and triterpenes. They not only protect cells but also lessen inflammation that’s linked to arthritis and other long-term conditions.

France blames Liverpool, ticket fraud for CL crowd trouble
PARIS, MAY 30 (AGENCIES): The French government on Monday blamed massive ticket fraud and Liverpool’s handling of its fans for the crowd trouble which marred the club’s Champions League soccer final against Real Madrid in Paris over the weekend. But as a blame-game over the fiasco continued into Monday, British Prime Minister Boris Johnson described the scenes outside the national stadium, which saw some fans including children teargassed by French police, as deeply upsetting. Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin said Liverpool had provided its supporters with paper tickets, and not electronic, which allowed for the possibility of what he described as a “massive fraud on an industrial scale”. More than two thirds of the tickets presented by some 62,000 Liverpool supporters had been fakes, the minister added. “I want to say once again that the decisions taken prevented deaths or

serious injury,” Darmanin told reporters after holding an emergency meeting on Monday. The match was delayed by more than 35 minutes after police tried to hold back people attempting to force their way
into the national stadium without tickets. Some ticket holders complained that they were not let in. Television footage showed images of young men who did not appear to be wearing red Liverpool jerseys jumping the gates
of the stadium and running away from security to get into the match. Others outside, including women and youngsters, were teargassed by riot police, said a Reuters witness. The crowd trouble has become a political issue
ahead of next month’s parliamentary elections and embarassed France which hosts the Rugby World Cup in 2023 and the Olympic Games in 2024. “The images are lamentable, they are disturbing because we can clearly see that we are not prepared for events such as the Olympic Games”, said far-left leader Jean-Luc Melenchon on Sunday, while his far-right rival Marine Le Pen called the incident a “humiliation” for France. INVESTIGATION Liverpool Chief Executive Billy Hogan has said the club wants a “transparent investigation” by governing body UEFA. Britain’s Johnson was hugely disappointed by how Liverpool soccer fans were treated at the Champions League final in Paris, his spokesman said. “The footage from the Stade de France this weekend was deeply upsetting and concerning. We know many Liverpool fans travelled to Paris in good time ... and we’re hugely disappointed by how they were
treated,” the spokesman said. “We are urging UEFA to work closely with the French authorities on a full investigation and to publish those findings.” Darmanin said there were no problems with Real Madrid supporters at Saturday’s match, most of whom he said had received electronic tickets, and that the Spanish side had managed to control their travelling fans better than Liverpool. He acknowledged that police had been caught offguard by local delinquents who turned up to cause trouble at the match. But defending the security protocols in place, the minister said France had only had three months to prepare after the venue was moved from Russia. Earlier, Sports Minister Amelie Oudea-Castera acknowledged that France nevertheless had to examine stepping up security at high-risk soccer matches, after crowd chaosalso erupted on Sunday after St Etienne were relegated from France’s Ligue 1.
F1: Leclerc declares Monaco GP ‘a disaster’ after dropping from pole to 4th position
MONTE CARLO, MAY 30 (IANS): Ferrari driver Charles Leclerc has described Sunday’s Monte Carlo Grand Prix “a disaster” despite completing his first home race as the Monegasque blamed his team’s confused strategy call for his drop from pole position to fourth. After the race got off to a delayed start due to heavy rain just before the start, Leclerc led away from teammate Carlos Sainz in the early pitting to get the wet tyres replaced by intermediate on Lap 18. But with Sainz then brought in for dry hard tyres three laps later, Leclerc was initially called in as well --
had a good time at Monaco Grand Prix so far, was really unhappy with his team’s decision which pushed him to fourth position on a circuit at which overtaking is very difficult. “No words - the season is long but we cannot do that,” said Leclerc over team radio on his cool-down lap, Team Principal Mattia Binotto quickly agreeing. I just don’t really understand the call that I had and I need explanations for now. “I couldn’t do much, I
was called just before the last corner, so I couldn’t react or ask for any information, but that was clearly the wrong choice, We need to get better,” Leclerc was quoted as saying in the report. One reason for Leclerc being so unhappy was that he lost a chance to narrow the gap with Verstappen. He had started on pole position and as said he had a chance of winning the race and finishing ahead of his rival.

McCourt to fight Dayana Silva in Bellator Dublin
Leah McCourt and Dayana Silva
L O N D O N, M AY 3 0 (AGENCIES): Northern Ireland’s Leah McCourt will take on Dayana Silva in a featherweight bout at Bellator Dublin on 23 September. The 29-year-old will look to bounce back from the second defeat of her career when she takes on the Brazilian. McCourt lost to Sinead Kavanagh at the same venue in February. The Dublin fight night will be headlined by Peter Queally on his comeback from injury against American lightweight contender Benson Henderson. McCourt was on a sixfight winning streak before her loss to Kavanagh and is seeking to fire herself back into title contention before the end of the year. Silva, 31, had lost two successive bouts before overcoming Janay Harding in April and will be a big underdog against McCourt.

L O N D O N, M AY 3 0 (AGENCIES): Chelsea’s £4.25bn sale to a consortium led by American investor Todd Boehly has been completed. The club was put up for sale in March before previous owner Roman Abramovich was sanctioned over his links to Russian president Vladimir Putin. Chelsea had been operating under a special government licence which would have expired on 31 May. Boehly said in a statement that he was “honoured” and “wanted to make fans proud”. His consortium fought off 11 serious rivals to become the new owners, in a sale process that started on 2 March and comprised more than 250 enquiries. “We are honoured to become the new custodians of Chelsea Football Club,” he said. “We’re all in - 100% - every minute of every match. Our vision as owners is clear: we want to make the fans proud. “Along with our commitment to developing the youth squad and acquiring the best talent, our plan of action is to invest in the club for the long term and build on Chelsea’s remarkable history of success. “I personally want to thank ministers and officials in the British government, and the Premier League, for all their work in making this happen.”
McCourt’s addition bolsters an already exciting card in Dublin which also includes James Gallagher taking on Brett Johns. Queally and Gallagher are looking to get back on track in front of their home fans after gutwrenching losses. Neither man has fought since defeats on home soil last November when Queally was stopped by Patricky ‘Pitbull’ Freire in their lightweight title fight, while Gallagher was submitted by Patchy Mix . Fazza Para-badminton: Pramod, Manasi, Manisha win golds
DUBAI, MAY 30 (IANS): Paralympic champion Pramod Bhagat and reigning world champion Manasi Joshi rallied from a game down to win the title in their respective categories as India finished with a rich haul of 17 medals including five gold at the 4th Fazza International Para-badminton 2022 here. Promising Manisha Ramadass shone with two gold medals -- in the women’s singles SU5 and women’s doubles SL3-SU5 with Mandeep Kaur, who settled for the silver in women’s singles SL3, on the final day of the event on Sunday. Bhagat, the top seed, played yet another long match in the tournament and in the final, he was stretched to the limit by fellow Indian Nitesh Kumar before winning 19-21, 2117, 21-17 in one hour and 1 minute and bagging the gold medal, the Paralympic Committee of India informed in a release on Monday. “After playing a long match in the semifinals, I wanted to finish off the match in two games. In Bahrain, the matches were relatively easier. So, I was taking time to get my rhythm and giving away games. The second game

now. She is still playing the singles pattern and will need soon sessions to adapt to the doubles,” said Bhagat on his new partnership with Ramadass. Thrilling women’s finals In the women’s singles SL3, Joshi produced an impressive show -- turning around a slow start -- as she pulled off a come-frombehind win over upcoming player Mandeep Kaur 16-21, 24-22, 21-14 in a
43-minute encounter. “I enjoyed the final. I was getting better with each game and I am happy to turn around the match with those crucial attacking shots. The key was to play offensive; Mandeep’s movements are faster than me so I tried to play more attacking and go faster in the game,” said Joshi, who also took a bronze in mixed doubles SL3-SU5 event partnering Ruthick Raghupathi.
India’s Sabari J. beats Pengue to bag WBC Australasia pro-boxing title
Lewandowski confirms he wants to leave Bayern
S Y D N E Y, M AY 3 0 (IANS): India’s Sabari Jaishankar defeated Australian champion Michael Pengue to win the World Boxing Council’s Australiasia title in the welterweight division. In a historic moment for Indian boxing, Sabari won the title with a knockout of the Australian champion in the 8th round of their 10-round bout on Saturday night. Pengue, also known as the “Punisher”, was the favourite to win the fight. He came into this event with two consecutive wins -- after bagging the vacant WBC Australasia title in December 2021 by a 10-round points decision over fellow Australian Jorge Kapeen. Sabari, a pro boxer from Tamilnadu had won the WBC India title in December 2021 via an 8-round split decision victory over Akashdeep Singh at Hyderabad. In the bout, Sabari oozed confidence right from the first bell. He outpunched Pengue in every round. By the eighth round, the Australian was exhausted. With a minute to go in
went according to the plan, as he was in a hurry to collect points,” Bhagat said on the final. “Dubai was a good event; I feel I am getting back to my usual form. After the Paralympic Games, my game hasn’t been consistent. I was here to analyse my game and get back to training regularly. “With Manisha (new mixed doubles partner), I think we can do better. We need to train together

the 8th round, a hard right from Sabari sent Pengue to the canvas. A knockdown count followed from the Referee to wait for Pengue to get back onto his feet, failing which he waved his hands to call an end to the fight, the Indian Boxing Council said in a report on its website. At the time of stoppage, Sabari was ahead on the scorecards of two of the three judges assigned by the World Boxing Council and the Australian Boxing Commission, the report said. “Sabari was a little low
on confidence ahead of the bout. It was obvious, he saw almost everybody in the stadium cheering for the local boxer. But I told him that he was equally good and just one good round will earn him half the spectators in the stadium,” Sbari’s coach and manager Kamal Mujtaba was quoted as saying in the report. “He followed the plan and went all out in the first round to shock Pengue and the crowd with his energy. Once the first hurdle was crossed, Sabari gained a lot of confidence which helped him win the title,” said Mujtaba.
M U N I C H , M AY 3 0 (AGENCIES): Striker Robert Lewandowski has said his “story is over” at Bayern Munich as he seeks a move from the German champions this summer. Lewandowski has a year left on his contract, but earlier this month Bayern sports director Hasan Salihamidzic said that the 33-year-old had expressed a desire to leave. L ewa n d ow s k i h a s been heavily linked with a move to Barcelona. “One thing is certain today, my story with Bayern is over,” he said. Speaking on international duty with Poland, he added: “After everything that has happened in recent months, I cannot imagine further good co-operation. “I realise a transfer will be the best solution for both sides.” Lewandowski joined the club in 2014 from Borussia Dortmund and has won eight Bundesliga titles and the Champions League in 2020. He scored 50 goals in 46 games for Bayern this season, and has scored 344 goals in 375 games during his eight-year stay, a total second only to Gerd Muller at the club.
Meanwhile, Manisha Ramadass was elated to finish with two gold medals yet again, after the Bahrain Para-badminton International. Manisha pulled off an inspiring 21-17, 21-11 win over Japan’s Paralympic bronze medallist Akiko Sugino before she paired with Mandeep to defeat the Thai pair of Nipada Saensupa and Chanida Srinavakul, the Asian Para Games bronze medallist, 21-9, 21-13. Manisha motivated to do well “I am very happy to be able to win two gold again. These title wins have definitely given me more confidence. I am learning with each game and watching these top players, of course, I am motivated to do well,” the 17-year-old from Chennai was quoted as saying in a release. However, Asian Para Games champion Tarun Dhillon had to settle for the silver after going down fighting to Indonesian Fredy Setiawan 11-21, 219, 21-23 in 43 minutes. He also has a bronze in men’s doubles SL3-SL4 with Nitesh. “This is going to haunt me for some time. Once I reached 20, I got relaxed and that was the time Fredy
saw me as a weak opponent. Fredy didn’t allow me to take that single point and went on winning back-toback points. This was a big lesson,” said Dhillon later, who had already claimed Setiawan as his biggest opponent in Asia. Young Nithya Sre Sumathy Sivan’s winning run in women’s singles SH6 was halted by Indonesian Rina Marlina who won the final with a 21-13, 21-10 scoreline. However, she compensated with the gold in women’s doubles SH6 with her partner Rachana Shaileshkumar Patel. Among other silver medallists were Dhinagaran Pandurangan and Sivarajan Solaimalai in men’s doubles SH6, while the bronze medallist were: Manoj Kumar (MS SL3), Jyothi Verma (WS SL4), Parul Parmar (WS SL3), Latatai Umrekar (WD SH6). The finals followed a colourful closing ceremony attended by many dignitaries including Danish World No. 1 shuttler Viktor Axelsen. Top Indian shuttlers will next be seen in action at the Canada parabadminton International, which is a Level I tournament, starting next week.

We’re a resilient group and tonight seemed to signify our season,” Celtics coach Ime Udoka said. “We can’t ever seem to shut the door and have to grind it out. This is a typical Celtics win.” Marcus Smart added 24 points and nine re-
bounds and Jaylen Brown also scored 24 points for the Celtics, who won in Miami for the third time in the series. Jimmy Butler recorded 35 points and nine rebounds while playing all 48 minutes for the Heat, al-
though he missed a 3-point attempt with 16.6 seconds left that would have given Miami the lead. Miami’s Bam Adebayo added 25 points and 11 rebounds and Kyle Lowry had 15 points and seven rebounds.
Mohamed Salah
L O N D O N, M AY 3 0 (IANS): Liverpool striker Mohamed Salah has been voted Professional Footballers’ Association (PFA) fans’ Player of the Year for 2021-22, the club said in a statement on Monday. The Egyptian international retained the award after football supporters recognised his stellar Premier League campaign for Liverpool. Salah claimed his third Golden Boot, alongside Tottenham Hotspur’s Son Heung-min, by netting 23 goals from his 35 outings in the season. He also picked up the league’s Playmaker prize for his 14 assists in the season -- one more than
teammate Trent Alexander-Arnold, who was also shortlisted for the PFA prize. Salah came out on top in a fans’ poll to claim the accolade for the third time in his career, with Kevin De Bruyne, Phil Foden, Conor Gallagher and Declan Rice the other nominees. Salah’s personal statistics are simply outrageous this season, 23 goals and 14 assists in the Premier League alone. The Egyptian’s early-season form was particularly devastating, including a stretch where he netted in seven games in a row - a run that culminated with a hat-trick against old foe Manchester United.

Jayson Tatum, Celtics hold off Heat in Game 7, win East title
M I A M I , M AY 3 0 (AGENCIES): The Boston Celtics have heard a lot about their pattern of falling short when an NBA Finals berth was on the line. Even when a doubledigit victory seemed probable in Sunday’s Game 7 of the Eastern Conference finals, there were still nerve-wracking moments at the finish line. But Boston held off the charge and series MVP Jayson Tatum registered 26 points, 10 rebounds and six assists as the Celtics notched a 100-96 victory over the host Miami Heat to win Sunday night’s series finale and reach the NBA Finals for the first time since 2010. Boston led wire-towire in ending a streak of five straight losses in opportunities to clinch an NBA Finals berth. One of those setbacks came at home in Game 6 on Friday night. “We fought through a lot of adversity this year.
Salah named PFA Fans’ Player of the Year for 2021-22
The Celtics will face the Golden State Warriors in the NBA Finals. Game 1 is Thursday night in San Francisco. The Heat, who trailed by 17 early in the second quarter and by 14 in the middle of the third, pulled within 82-79 after Adebayo and Butler opened the fourth quarter with baskets. But Boston countered with eight straight points, with Smart’s floater making it an 11-point cushion with 6:36 left. S m a r t ’s t w o f r e e throws elevated the lead to 98-85 with 3:35 remaining. Miami suddenly came alive as Lowry, Max Strus and Victor Oladipo scored baskets to cut the deficit to seven. Lowry’s layup with one minute left pulled the Heat within 98-93, and Strus followed with a 3-pointer to cut it two with 44.4 seconds left. Miami had a chance to move ahead, but Butler’s ill-fated transition 3-pointer bounced off the
rim, and Smart made two free throws with 11.4 seconds left to give Boston the game-ending four-point lead. Celtics veteran Al Horford was the defender as Butler came down court. He was unsure if Butler would drive for a hoop or pull up and shoot. Instead it was a rough season-ending game for the Heat, who made 42 percent of their shots and were a shaky 6 of 30 from behind the arc. Butler topped 40 points twice in the series but said he didn’t perform at a high enough level. Miami’s Tyler Herro (groin) returned from a three-game absence and was scoreless in seven minutes. Grant Williams added 11 points for Boston, which shot 41.2 percent from the field, including 11 of 32 from 3-point range. Brown scored 15 and Tatum added 13 as the Celtics held a 55-49 halftime lead. Butler scored 24 in the half for Miami.

FRENCH OPEN: Danish teen Rune stuns No. 4 Tsitsipas PARIS, MAY 30 (AP): Danish teenager Holger Rune has eliminated 2021 French Open runner-up Stefanos Tsitsipas to reach his first major quarterfinal in his Roland Garros debut. The 40th-ranked Rune beat fourth-seeded Tsitsipas 7-5, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 at Court Philippe Chatrier on Monday. Tsitsipas is the first member of the top eight seeds to leave the men’s bracket. Rune never had won a Grand Slam match until last week, going 0-2 in previous appearances at the sport’s top four events. But the hard-hitting 19-year-old now joins sixth-seeded Carlos Alcaraz to make this the first Slam tournament with two teenagers in the men’s quarterfinals since Hendrik Dreekmann and Andrei Medvedev at the 1994 French Open.
Holger Rune
Rune had a bit of trouble closing things out against Tsitsipas after going up 5-2 in the fourth set. Rune dropped nine points in a row and his lead narrowed to 5-4. Then he needed to save three break points before serving out the biggest victory of his career. Rune will play No. 8 seed Casper Ruud of Norway for a semifinal berth.
