Though Nagaland’s weekly positivity rate (2.1%) has been below 5% for the past seven consecutive weeks, the official however cautioned that the second wave of Covid-19 has not ended yet. Open flouting of Covid-19 protocols is rampant in the state where people thronging crowded places are not wearing face masks since it is a largely held belief that after taking both vaccine jabs it totally safe. “People are still dying, though not as it was during

According to a price notification of state-owned fuel retailers, price of petrol was hiked again by 25 paise per litre while diesel price was increased by 30 paise per litre. The fourth increase in its rates this week has sent petrol prices above Rs.100 in most major cities of the country. After the latest rate revision, prices of petrol and diesel in Dimapur rose to Rs.100.65 per litre and Rs.92.59 per litre respectively. In the state capital Kohima, prices of a litre of petrol and diesel stood at Rs.101.65 and Rs.93.40 respectively. The basket of crude oil India imports has averaged $78 per barrel in last few days. Prices differ from state to state depending on the incidence of local taxes.

Assam Cong MLA arrested for remark on eviction drive
Sherman Ali Ahmed
G U WA H AT I , O C T 2 (AGENCIES): Assam Congress MLA Sherman Ali Ahmed has been arrested from his official residence in Guwahati this evening for making provocative statements in reference to the last week’s violent eviction drive in the state, reports NDTV. The arrest comes a day after the Congress served a show-cause notice to the three-time MLA from Baghbar justified the killing of eight people in Darrang district around 40 years ago at the same area where last week’s eviction drive took place. He called the eight people, seen as martyrs of agitation in the Assamese society, “murderers”. Ahmed apparently made the remarks while reacting to reports that said alleged encroachers in Darrang district disrespected the memory of those who K Y M C
died during the 1983 Assam agitation. His comment has evoked strong reactions across Assam and multiple FIRs have been filed against him. The Congress while issuing the show-cause notice said the MLA issued the statements “with the intention of damaging the party’s image” ahead of the bypolls in the state. It also added that the “insensitive” statements made by him have “great propensity” to destroy the social harmony of the state. On September 20, the Darrang district authorities began evictions at four places in Dholpur, about 9 km from Sipajhar, and nearly 800 families - most of whom were Bengalispeaking Muslims - were removed from 4,500 bighas of land the government claimed ownership for. NEW DELHI, OCT 2 (PTI): Since the launch of the Jal Jeevan Mission in 2019, five crore households have got water connection and now tap water is reaching every household in about 1.25 lakh villages, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Saturday, asserting that today’s India has done more work in just two years than what was done in seven decades. Speaking after interacting with gram panchayats and pani samitis/village water and sanitation committees (VWSC) on the Jal Jeevan Mission, Modi said the mission is not just about bringing water to people but it is also a decentralisation movement that is village and women-driven. “From the time of Independence till 2019, only three crore households in our country had access to tap water. Since the launch of the Jal Jeevan Mission in 2019, five crore households were provided with water connections,” he said. “Today, water is reach-

The procurement operation is undertaken by the central government’s nodal agency Food Corporation of India (FCI) along with state agencies. Haryana Minister Anil Vij on Saturday said the farmers’ agitation is getting “violent day by day”. “Farmers’ agitation is getting violent day by day. Violent movement in the country of Mahatma Gandhi cannot be allowed…,” said Vij in a tweet. Police personnel were deployed in strength to maintain law and order, the officials said. Farmers expressed apprehension that they would suffer if their crop is not purchased at the grain markets. Paddy crop, though in small quantity, has started arriving in mandis (markets) especially in border areas of Punjab, farmers said.

CHANDIGARH, OCT 2 (PTI): Farmers broke police barricades and faced water cannons, including near Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar’s house in Karnal, as they laid siege on residences of legislators and ministers in Punjab and Haryana on Saturday to protest the delay in commencement of paddy crop procurement. The Centre on Thursday had postponed procurement of kharif paddy in Punjab and Haryana, which usually begins on October 1, to October 11 as the crop maturity is delayed and moisture content in fresh arrival is beyond permissible limits owing to recent heavy rains. In Karnal, the Haryana Police used water cannons to disperse protesting farmers after they tried to lay siege on Khattar’s residence, while in Shahabad and Panchkula, the agitators used tractors to break police barricades to reach houses of BJP leaders, including Haryana Minister Sandeep Singh, officials said. Buying health
hat the Covid-19 pandemic has shown to the people across the globe, is that those who can afford the cost of treatment etc are the ones who come out of the fatal zone. The covid-19 has done so much harm on the health of people from all walks of life and from every nation be it developed, developing or under developed. Whether the coronavirus is a mega plot or conspiracy will be known only after a few years. However, presently the cost of treatment for those infected with covid-19 is huge. The cost of medicines to combat diseases is unaffordable and therefore, unfortunate that modern research and development has yet to benefit humanity as a whole. The imposition of patent through the World Trade Organisation may have made drugs prohibitive especially to the economically poor but not anymore and that is indeed welcome news. The World Trade Organisation’s 146 member states had in 2003, agreed to make inexpensive drugs available to poor countries for fighting fatal diseases such as AIDS,TB etc. A majority of the population in the world are from poor countries where availability of cheaper drugs is a life-and-death issue. The WTO agreement was good news but over fifteen years later, it mattered little when covid-19 appeared. The pandemic has again pitted the powerful pharmaceutical companies of the developed world versus the pliant goverments. The pharmaceutical giants of the US who pump huge amounts into research and make life-saving drugs naturally view the issue of cheap drugs with a pinch of salt as they believe it is fair to charge something extra to make profits. That is why drugs used for treatment of diseases like AIDS, Hepatitis, Cancer and now covid-19 are very expensive and through which the manufacturers earn huge margins as profit. The US companies have probably come to the point that it was no use hanging on to the rigidity of their patent and price demand when relatively better-off developing countries like Brazil and India, use a different process to make essential drugs patented by US companies. Circumventing the US patent law has made Indian drugs cheap because the Indian patent law allows this. The US companies object to Indian firms not only selling cheaper drugs within their countries, but also exporting them, particularly to the developed world. The third party to the dispute are the poor countries, mostly African, which neither can manufacture own drugs nor import them from the US because of the prohibitive prices. A large number of patients suffering from life-threatening diseases like AIDS, Ebola, Hepatitis etc live in these countries. Under the WTO pact the US companies have agreed to the export of cheaper drugs by Indian and Brazilian firms to the poor countries in a limited way only for specific diseases and want their drugs to be packed differently. On the home front the sale and distribution of medicines by Indian pharmaceutical companies needs to be streamlined for various reasons such as ensuring that tie-ups do not open doors for entering the market with cheaper generic and other drugs whose patents’ have expired. The cost of medicines for covid is not confined to treatment but also post-covid complications. The government has to step in to subsidize medicines otherwise, only the wealthy and those who can afford expensive treatment can hope to survive and that is indeed a tragedy.
DailyDevotion The Place of Humiliation
If You can do anything, have compassion on us and help us. —Mark 9:22 After every time of exaltation, we are brought down with a sudden rush into things as they really are, where it is neither beautiful, poetic, nor thrilling. The height of the mountaintop is measured by the dismal drudgery of the valley, but it is in the valley that we have to live for the glory of God. We seeHis glory on the mountain, but we never live for His glory there. It is in the place of humiliation that we find our true worth to God— that is where our faithfulness is revealed. Most of us can do things if we are always at some heroic level of intensity, simply because of the natural selfishness of our own hearts. But God wants us to be at the drab everyday level, where we live in the valley according to our personal relationship with Him. Peter thought it would be a wonderful thing for them to remain on the mountain, but Jesus Christ took the disciples down from the mountain and into the valley, where the true meaning of the vision was explained (see Mark 9:5-6, Mark 9:14-23). “If you can do anything….” It takes the valley of humiliation to remove the skepticism from us. Look back at your own experience and you will find that until you learned who Jesus really was, you were a skillful skeptic about His power. When you were on the mountaintop you could believe anything, but what about when you were faced with the facts of the valley? You may be able to give a testimony regarding your sanctification, but what about the thing that is a humiliation to you right now? The last time you were on the mountain with God, you saw that all the power in heaven and on earth belonged to Jesus— will you be skeptical now, simply because you are in the valley of humiliation?

COVID-19 prevention and management in children T
he ongoing wave of COVID-19 is slowly infection children below 18 years although not severe. However, with new variants of the Virus one cannot estimate the severity of the infection in the coming days. Till a vaccine is developed for children below 18 years of age parents should take all the COVID-19 precautionary measures for their children. Here are some steps for parents/ care giver to prevent and manage COVID-19 in Children 1. What should parents/ Care giver do? - Teach children more than 2 years to wash hand with soap and water for 20 second, maintain distance of 6 feet from others and limit in-person playtime. - Continue Breastfeeding of Children under 2 years by following COVID appropriate Behaviour - If child is more than 5 years, teach them to always wear mask while going out. - C l e a n c o m m o n l y touched places, toys at least once a day with 1% sodium hypochlorite. - Engage child in indoor physical and learning activities as much as possible.

t is a universal phenomenon in the lives of humans from conception, and according to most biologists the aging begins from the fourth decade of life and ends with death, the end of biological life. It is the progressive decline in the function and performance .aging is the process of growing old, resulting in part from the failure of body cells to function normally or to produce new body cells to replace them that are dead or malfunctioning. Due to the growing age there is a reduction in bodily functions and various changes in systems and organs. With the limits imposed, retirement age is assumed by the following; • Calendar (chronological, determined by years of age) • Biological (functional, determined in individual characteristics) • Law (statutory retirement age limit) • Economics(lack of activity, a reduction of income) • Social (related to the loss of prestige and social roles) • Psychological (determined by the study of intellectual function) Old age is divided into periods, according to World Health Organization old age is divided into 3 periods; 1. Aging (early old age):young old =60-70 years 2. Old age (late age) old-old =70-90 years of age 3. Longevity (longlived)= 90 years and older Physiological changes occurring during aging run unevenly in the various organs and systems of the body, and may also take place at different rates in individual. With increasing lifespan; older adults are living with multiple co-morbidities. Due to the ageing effect on the health status of older adults and their disease pattern of presentation, it is advisable to older people for physiotherapy in order to train their musculoskeletal, neurological and cardiovascular conditions. Some of the conditions in elderly people and the role of Physiotherapy 1. Cardiovascular disease (CVDs) CVDs are a group of disorders of the heart and blood vessels. They include coronary heart disease, peripheral arterial disease, congenital heart disease, cerebrovascular disease, aortic atherosclerosis.
2. When to suspect COVID in Children? Symptoms are similar in adults and children- Fever or Chills, cough, Nasal congestion or running nose, loss of taste or smell, shortness of breath or difficulty in breathing, diarrhea and poor appetite. 3. Take extra care if your child has any of the following. - Malnutrition, disability, Conditions such as HIV, underlying cardiac, liver, kidney problem. 4. Who can be treated at home Isolation? - Asymptomatic or children with mild symptoms like sore throat; cough can be managed at home. 5. Care of children under home isolation. - Don’t panic, majority of cases can be easily managed at home if detected early. - Inform ASHA/other functionaries in your areas. - Keep the child in a wellventilated room. - Children less than 5 years should be accompanied by mother or caretaker during isolation. - If home isolation is not possible take the child to the near-
est COVID Care Centre. 6. Monitor the child by: - Counting respiratory rate 2-3 times a day. - Looking for chest in drawing. - Looking for bluish discoloration of skin. - Checking body parts to ascertain if it is extremely cold. - Checking Oxygen saturation and body temperature 4th hourly. - Fluid intake in 24 hours. Feeding intake and maintaining feeding chart - Activity level 7. Symptomatic Management of Home isolated children - For Fever: Paracetamol 10-15mg/kg/dose can be given in 4-6 hours interval. - For Cough: In older children gargle with salt water can be performed. - Fluid & Feeds: Ensure oral fluid to maintain hydration. - Antibiotics: Not indicated 8. What should be done if there is a sick adult at home? - Self –isolate in a room with adequate ventilation. - Stay as far as possible
from children. - Always wear triple ply mask or N95. - Use separate dish, towels etc and clean separately. - Self –monitor for danger signs, socialize with friends and family through phone or video calls. - Take plenty of fluids. 9. Consult doctor immediately if any of the following is present. - Respiratory rate more than≥60/min in children 0-2 months of age. ≥50/min in children 2-12 months of age. ≥ 40/min in children 1-5 years of age. ≥ 30/min in children > 5 years of age. - Urine output less than 0.5 to 1.5 cc/ kg/hour - Oxygen saturation below 94% - Temperature more than 100.4 F - Inadequate feeding / fluid intake. - Physically inactive. - Chest in drawing, cold extremities, bluish discoloration
Physiotherapy for the elderly
Aging can cause changes in the heart and blood vessels. Changes that happen with age may increase a person’s risk of heart disease. Major cause of heart disease is a buildup of fatty deposits in the walls of arteries over many years. People with age 65 and much older are more likely to suffer a heart attack than the younger people. Patient with CVDs will feel pain or discomfort in the center of the chest, arms, left shoulder, elbows jaw or back and shortness of breath, nausea, vomiting, pallor and cold sweat Physiotherapy role • Cardiac rehabilitation programmes have been shown to be effective with physiotherapist playing a key role in these programmes. It has shown reduce length of hospital stays as well as the number of cardiovascular related admissions, cardiac mortality and improved quality of life. • Cardiac rehabilitation include exercise, education and support • Physical activity performed at an intensity of >40% of maximal aerobic capacity has shown the greatest benefits in reducing the development or progressing of CVD. Aerobic exercise increase peoples cardiac output, maximum heart rate endurance and arterial blood flow. • Physiotherapists can help to reduce long term risk. 2. Cerebrovascular disease (stroke) Stroke is a neurological condition, occurs when there is an interruption of the blood supply to particular area of the brain, ultimately leading to cell injury and cell death. Stroke is common in older people and the progressive increase in life –expectancy observed in recent decades in many countries which resulted in an increase in no. of people at risk for stroke. It occurs in all age group but double risk group is between the ages of 5585 years. Stroke may cause due to High blood pressure or hypertension, cigarette smoking, heart disease, diabetes, cholesterol imbalance and physical inactivity and obesity. The warning signs of stroke are sudden numbness or weakness of face, arm, and leg especially on one side of the body. Sudden confusion, trouble talking or understanding speech, trouble seeing in one or both eyes, troubling walking, dizziness or loss
of balance or coordination, severe headache with no known cause. Other signs are double vision, drowsiness and nausea or vomiting. Sometimes the signs may last only a few moments and disappear. Role of Physiotherapy • Prevent ignorance or unawareness of the affected/ hemiplegic side • Decrease tendency to develop synergy in the chronic stage • Prevention of any joint restriction or stiffness • P r e v e n t i o n o f complication like chest complication, deconditioning of bone and muscles • Early weight bearing • P s y c h o l o g i c a l counseling and education to family • Prevents pressure sores by proper positioning of the patient • Prevent from deconditioning by early mobilization in the bed. • Improve sensory function by repeated sensory stimuli from distal to proximal or by using different neurological approaches. • Improve flexibility and joint integrity • Helps to manage spasticity by stretching • Improve motor control, & motor learning • Postural control and functional mobility • Improve upper extremity functions, and lower limb function • Managing shoulder pain • Improve balance, locomotion and aerobic function by balance training & gait training. • . Physiotherapy also helps in fatigue management In the past decade it has seen an exponential growth in the no. Randomized trials in relation to physiotherapy intervention utilized in stroke. Some of techniques uses for stroke rehabilitation are ;Constraint induced movement therapy, Mirror therapy, Motor imagery and Mental Practice, Virtual reality, Functional electrical stimulation, Robot assisted arm training, Bilateral arm training, Electro-mechanical assisted gait training, Bobath technique, PNF Technique, Motor relearning program, Hydrotherapy. 3. Neurodegenerative disease - Neurodegenerative disease is an umbrella term for a range of conditions which primarily affect the neurons in the human brain. These
age- dependent disorders are becoming increasingly prevalent, in part because the elderly population has increased in recent years. This cause problem with movement and affect a person’s ability to move, speak and breathe. Neurodegenerative disease are; Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, Prion disease, Motor neuron disease, Huntington disease, Spinocerebellar ataxia and Spinal muscular atrophy. Role of physiotherapy Neurodegenerative disorders are a group of progressive neurological disease that causes worsening motor, cognitive and autonomic dysfunction over time. • Maintain and improve levels of function and independence which will help to improve a person’s quality of life • Use exercise and movement strategies to improve mobility • Correct and improve abnormal movement patterns and posture, where possible • Maximize muscle strength and joint flexibility • Correct and improve posture and balance and minimize risk of falls • Maintain a good breathing pattern and effective cough • Educate the person and their care-giver or family members • Enhance the effects of drug therapy 4. Arthritis Arthritis is defined as an acute or chronic joint inflammation that often co-exists with pain and structural damage. It is a set of symptoms that includes pain, stiffness and joint deformities subsequent to an inflammatory process. The two common type of arthritis are Osteoarthritis (OA) and Rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Osteoarthritis (OA) - OA is one of the most chronic conditions of the joint. It happens when the tissue that cushions the joints wear away, causing pain and stiffness, often occurs in knee, hips, lower back and neck, small joints of fingers and the bases of thumb and toes. OA is one of the most prevalent conditions resulting in disability particularly in elderly population. It usually emerges in people aged over 40 and prevalence rises with increasing age. It is more common in women. OA causes decrease muscle strength, decreased flexibility, weight gain, limitation in the ability to do
of body. - Skin rashes, redness & Swelling of lips, tongue, hand & feet. 10. In case of moderate or severe symptoms : Children with rapid breathing/ difficulty breathing/ SPO2<94 should, be referred immediately to the nearest Dedicated COVID Health centre or secondary hospital after consulting with the nearest Hospital. Always consult a medical practitioner before any medicine is administered. For more information call toll free- 1800-3450019/ National- 1705 If there are symptoms of COVID19, get tested. After negative self-test, if symptoms still persist, get confirmatory test done through RT-PCR or TruNat. Always follow the precautionary measures of wear a mask, washing hands frequently, maintaining social distance and do not go out of the house un-necessarily. Department of Health & Family Welfare Government of Nagaland Vaccine is the only way to protect ourselves and our loved ones
activities of daily living and often compromise mobility. Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) - RA is an autoimmune disease causes joints to become inflamed.it usually affects more than one joint. In RA, joints complaints are in foreground, polyarthritis in small joints of hands, other affected joints include wrist, elbows, shoulder, hip, knee and ankle. The peak onset age is between 30-50 years with increasing prevalence with age. Common signs are morning stiffness multiple joint pain, swelling, fatigue and weight loss and difficulty in doing activities of daily living. Role of physiotherapy in arthritis • P h y s i o t h e r a p y plays an integral role in the non-pharmacologic management of arthritis. • Helps client’s cope with chronic pain and disability through the design of programs that address flexibility, endurance, aerobic condition, to increase range of motion, strength, bone integrity, coordination, balance and risk of falls. • Physical exercise helps to increase the physical capacity and improves general muscular endurance and strength without detrimental effect on disease activity or pain in arthritis. • Exercise therapy aimed in improving daily functioning and social participation by means of improving strength, aerobic condition, the range of motion, stabilization and coordination. 5. Low back pain in Elderly people Low back pain is one of the major disabling health conditions among older people aged 60 years or older. Most of the causes of low back pain among older people are non-specific and self-limiting; old age people are prone to develop certain low back pain pathologies like osteoporotic vertebral fractures- which is common fragility fractures of the spine due to osteoporosis present with pain and loss of mobility that affect up to 50% of people over 80 years old, Lumbar spinal stenosis- it is degenerative disease encountered in older adults is a leading cause of low back pain and lower extremity pain in people aged 65 years and older. Sensory and proprioceptive changes due to lumbar nerve root involvement are believed to cause pain and balance problems leading to decreased walking
capacity and function and impaired spinal proprioception potentially leading to increased postural sway and risk of falls Spinal degeneration/ disc degenerative disease - represents with the wide category of back pain resulting from or associated with the degeneration of intervertebral discs. When it occurs the discs are unable to fulfill their primary functions of cushioning and providing mobility between vertebrae. Although the exact cause is unknown, it is thought to be associated with ageing process during which intervertebral discs dehydrate, lose elasticity, and collapse. Role of Physiotherapy As times low back pain may be diagnosed and treated with elaborate treatments but now physiotherapy is fast becoming a safe, efficient and effective way to relax the muscles. • There are four phases of overall treatment; 1) pain relief 2) restoring normal range of motion and strengthening the muscles 3) restoring full function and then finally 4) preventing recurrence lower back • It is important to understand that physiotherapy is a stepwise process to restore muscular movement and strength and hence requires consistent exercising first with the physiotherapist and then on your own to promote easier and better recovery. 6. Frozen shoulder (FS) - Frozen shoulder also known as adhesive capsulitis is a very common painful shoulder disorder. It has been reported that about 2% -5% general populations experience this condition. It commonly affects people between the age group of 40 and 60 years and occurs in women more than men. In addition diabetes is at an increased risk for developing frozen shoulder. It is one of the most serious painful disorders in the musculoskeletal system. Patient who experience this condition often suffer from poor quality of life because of the restriction of both active and passive range of their shoulder mobility. Frozen shoulder progress in 3 stages – freezing (painful), frozen (adhesive) and thawing. PM slams oppn over farm reforms criticism
NEW DELHI, OCT 2 (PTI): Accusing the opposition of “intellectual dishonesty” and “political deceit” over its criticism of his government’s three farm laws, Prime Minister Narendra Modi says tough and big decisions need to be taken to bring benefits to citizens who should have received them decades ago. Stoutly defending the agri laws, Modi said it is one thing if a political party makes a promise and is unable to deliver on it but what is a “particularly undesirable” and “detestable” trait is some of these parties made promises on the lines of the reforms enacted by his government and have now done a U-turn and spread “the most malicious kind of misinformation on the promises they themselves had made”. In an inter view to Open magazine, he said, “The things that people of India are entitled to, those benefits that they should
have received decades ago, have still not reached them. India shouldn’t be put in a situation where it has to wait any longer for the things that this country and its citizens are entitled to, we should give it to them. And, for this, big decisions should be taken and if need be, tough decisions should also be taken.” He was replying to a question about the labour and farm laws enacted by the government and its refusal to roll-back the three contentious agriculture laws, as demanded by the protesting farmer unions. The ruling BJP has said that several opposition parties, including the Congress, had promised similar farm reforms that the Modi government has enacted but are now backing protests against the new laws for selfish political reasons. A section of farmers, especially in Punjab and part of Haryana and Uttar Pradesh, have been protesting against the laws,
‘Will defy orders if Chhath celebrations not allowed’
Manoj Tiwari
NEW DELHI, OCT 1 (IANS): BJP MP from North East Delhi, Manoj Tiwari, said on Friday that he would defy the Delhi Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) order if permission to celebrate Chhath Puja at the ghats is not granted. As per a DDMA order issued on Thursday, Ramleela, Durga Puja and Dussehra celebrations have been allowed in the national capital, whereas Chhath Puja celebrations have been prohibited in public places and people have been advised to celebrate the same at their homes. DMK leader Veerapandi A. Raja dies C H E N NA I , O C T 2 (IANS): DMK leader and former lawmaker Veerapandi A. Raja died of cardiac arrest in Salem on Saturday, which happened to be his birthday as well. Raja was the son of former Minister late Veerapandi S. Arumugam, who was a DMK strongman in Salem district. Raja was rushed to the hospital where the doctors declared him brought dead. Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin and leaders of other political parties condoled Raja’s death.
Minister Arvind Kejriwal, Tiwari said, “By celebrating Chhath Puja, we will show him that we cannot be stopped.” Tiwari made the remarks while addressing the gathering of a Chhath Puja Samiti on Friday. “Weekly markets have started opening. Big programmes are also being held. People have started defeating Covid due to PM Narendra Modi’s free vaccine,” Tiwari said. “In other states, Chhath Puja, Durga Puja and Ramleela will be held properly,” he said, adding, “If someone stops Chhath Puja just in Delhi, then his intentions are not clear.” Chhath Puja will be celebrated on November 10 this year. The festival is popular in Bihar, Jharkhand and Eastern Uttar Pradesh. As per the fresh Covid guidelines issued by the DDMA on Thursday, large gatherings, melas, rallies and processions during the festivals are not allowed.

whose implementation have been put on hold. The prime minister noted that his government has been saying right from the beginning that it is ready to sit together with the protesting farm bodies and discuss on those issues on which there is a disagreement. “Many meetings have also been held in this regard but no one till now has come up with a specific point of disagreement that we want this to be changed,” he said. Modi said politics in India had seen only one model under which governments were run to build the next government, while his
fundamental thinking is different as he believes in running the government to build the nation. “The tradition has been to run the government to make your party win but my purpose is to run the government in a way to make our country win,” he said. Referring to his government’s measures like cooking gas cylinder distribution and building toilets for the poor or push to digital payments, he said many sections of India’s political class view people through the lens of “Raj Shakti” (government’s power) while he sees them as “Jan Shakti” (people’s power). The prime minister also asserted that India has done better than many developed countries in handling the Covid pandemic. In an apparent attack on those who have criticised his government’s handling of the Covid pandemic, he said, “However, we have in our midst vested interests
whose only aim is to tarnish India’s name. Covid was a global scourge with all countries equally affected. In this scenario, India has done better than its peers and many developed countries, notwithstanding such negative campaigns.” The biggest lesson from the Covid fight has been that India has an unparalleled ability to unite, find a common purpose, come together, and a tremendous capacity to deliver when a need arises, he said. From being a net importer of personal protective equipment (PPE) kits, India has now become one of the biggest manufacturers across the globe, he said. “Imagine if our country had not come up with a vaccine. What would be the situation? We know that a large population of the world doesn’t have access to Covid vaccines. Today, our success in vaccination is thanks to India being Atmanirbhar (self-reliant),” he said.

General Naravane reached Ladakh on Friday and on his first day of visit he interacted with the troops and complimented them for their steadfastness and high morale, while being deployed in some of the
harshest terrain, altitude and weather conditions. A day before his visit to Ladakh, General Naravane in Delhi had said that developments along the Line of Actual Control in Eastern Ladakh added to the ongoing legacy challenges on India’s active and disputed borders on the Western and Eastern Front. While speaking at the 116th annual session of PHD Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PHDCCI) on Thursday, General Naravane had said as far as Northern neighbour is concerned India has an outstanding border issue. Responding to continued aggression by China at the border, he had stated, “We are well prepared to meet any misadventure that may occur as we have demonstrated in the past. Such kinds of incidents will continue to occur till the time a long term solution is reached.”

Sharad Pawar lauds Nitin Gadkari
PUNE, OCT 2 (PTI): NCP chief Sharad Pawar on Saturday lauded Union road transport minister Nitin Gadkari for using power effectively to carry out development. The two leaders from rival parties shared the dais at a function at Ahmednagar in Maharashtra. “I am attending this function because I was told that Gadkari was going to inaugurate many projects in Ahmednagar which would solve long-pending issues of the city, and he wants me to be present,” Pawar said. Very often nothing happens once the stone-laying ceremony takes place for a project, the NCP leader said, adding, “But when it comes to Gadkari’s projects, within

of work had been done. But after he took over, the figure has crossed 12,000 km,” the NCP chief said. The former Union agriculture minister advised farmers in the region that the use of sugarcane will not remain limited only to sugar production and they should think of it as the raw material for ethanol too. In his speech, Gadkari said while executing road projects in Buldhana district of Maharashtra, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) also de-silted local rivers and streams. “I suggest (Maharashtra Rural Development Minister) Hasan Mushrif to think of focusing on water conservation in Ahmednagar district,” he said.
the people. These appointments will take care of the pendency to some extent”. Justice Ramana emphasized, “I seek cooperation and support from the government to enable access to justice and strengthen the democracy”. Justice Ramana said people need to feel that law and institution is for everyone and in a democratic country it is the faith and trust of the people that sustains institutions. “We must earn that faith. The quality of democracy rests on the quality of justice. For a healthy democracy, a vibrant judiciary is essential”, he said. Justice Ramana also stressed on the impor-
tance of ensuring access to justice to all including the vulnerable sections and added that guarantee of equal justice will be rendered meaningless if the vulnerable sections cannot enforce their rights. “Equality and access to justice complement each other”, he said. He added that Covid-19 has created many problems for many institutions, including the judiciary --thousands of cases have accumulated in different fora, apart from the large vacancies and nonworking of courts, lack of virtual conference facilities in rural areas. “Pandemic has exposed some deeprooted problems”, he said.
NEW DELHI, OCT 2 (PTI): Over 60 lakh people participated in the ‘Swachhta Hi Seva’ initiative, which seeks to reinforce the concept of sanitation as everybody’s business, under the Swachh Bharat Mission, the Jal Shakti Ministry said on Saturday. The over two-week-long initiative was organised by the ministry’s Department of Drinking Water and Sanitation (DDWS) as part of the ‘Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav’ celebrations under phase 2 of the Swachh Bharat Mission-Grameen (SBMG). Launched on September 15, the ‘Swachhata Hi Seva’ (SHS) campaign concluded on Saturday. This campaign encouraged people to understand the importance of a clean environment and inculcate the practice of systematic management of solid and liquid waste into their lives, the ministry said. “In SHS 2021 fortnight, over 60 lakh people participated and contributed in ‘Swachhata Shramdaan’, over 1.5 lakh ‘shramdaan’ activities were organised, more than 43,000 gram sabhas were held for SUP (single-use plastic) ban resolution passing, and around 783 ‘swachhata raths’ were flagged off countrywide across districts and states,” it said.
democracy, says Kanhaiya NEW DELHI, OCT 2 (IANS): The recent entry of Kanhaiya Kumar, earlier associated with the Communist Party of India (CPI) and its student wing the All India Students Federation - including in his stint as President of the JNU Students Union, into the Congress has created ripples in the political circles. It is believed that Kanhaiya, known for his stirring oratory and debating skills, may be given a key role in the Congress, with sources indicating that he could be made the Bihar unit’s Working President, like Hardik Patel in Gujarat, or a party Secretary. In an interview with IANS, Kanhaiya, who is noted for dwelling on ideology, was unfazed on a question about switching between parties with different ideologies. “Ideas can evolve. On hearing the word ‘ideology’, we get a pre-conceived idea in our mind. Change is a constant of the universe, but the foundation does not alter,” he said. Kanhaiya said that for him, the foundation of his thought, or ideology, is related to Indian

culture’s ethos of welfare of all and ‘Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam’. Then training his guns on the BJP, he said that the present rulers of the country are those who do not like to be questioned, and are seeking to remove all vestiges of critical questioning and thought, which will undermine the country’s foundations. Along with this, he also lauded the Congress’ historical legacy of taking along the cultural and civisational ethos of the country. That is why he chose to be associated with the party, Kanhaiya said. Internal rifts are rising in the Congress, and on the day of of his induction, the party’s Punjab Congress President Navjot Singh Sidhu used Twitter to announce his resignation.

This Bill would give Cairn Energy and Vodafone Plc a window to do away with the arbitrations and settle their long-drawn tax disputes with the government. An arbitration tribunal in The Hague had pronounced its award on December 21, 2020 in favour of Cairn Energy Plc and Cairn UK Holdings Ltd (CUHL), making the Indian government liable to pay an arbitration award of $1.2 billion to it.
NEW DELHI, OCT 2 (IANS): Rising demand is expected to keep electricity prices elevated in short-term. According to India Ratings and Research (Ind-Ra), the all-India energy demand continued to recover in August 2021 by 17.8 per cent YoY to 129.4 billion units (BU). “There was a recovery of demand in all the major manufacturing states such as Maharashtra, Gujarat and Tamil Nadu,” Ind-Ra said in a report. “Additionally, the all-India energy demand increased marginally in the first 20 days of September 2021 to 77BU, indicating a continued recovery. The all-India demand during 5MFY22 surpassed the preCovid levels at 597BU.” As per the report, led by continued improvement in demand, the average
short-term price at Indian Energy Exchange increased significantly to Rs 5.06 per kWh during August 2021, as the difference in the buy and sell bids turned positive. “The average shortterm price for a day peaked at Rs 9 per kWh during August, and the average shortterm price for the first 20 days of September remained high at Rs 4.08 per kWh.” Besides, Ind-Ra cited that with the recovery in demand, electricity generation (excluding renewables) increased 16.8 per cent YoY to 120.8BU in August 2021. “Given the higher dependency on coal-based power with almost all other sources of power already on must run status, the plant load factor of coal-based power plants improved to 59.27 per cent in August 2021.”

Rising fuel prices spur demand for CNG vehicles NEW DELHI, OCT 2 (IANS): Rising fuel prices have accelerated demand for CNG vehicles in the country. Accordingly, the availability of CNG in more cities has supported this trend. “Demand for CNG vehicles remains strong, benefiting from surging fuel prices and increased CNG penetration in newer cities,” said Motilal Oswal Financial Services (MOFSL). “Inventory in the system is 10-20 days.” According to MOFSL, the retail demand evolution has been a mixed bag since the lifting of the second lockdown from mid-June 2021. It pointed out that demand has bounced back quicker for ‘PVs, but 2Ws’ have seen slower recovery. Besides, ‘CVs’ are expected to see healthy recovery from October 2021, the outlook for tractors is cautious due to the very high base of last year.
Retrenched Hindustan Motors car plant workers withdraw stir temporarily CHENNAI, OCT 2 (IANS): On the assurance given by the Tiruvallur District Collector that their issue would be sorted out in the coming week, the retrenched workers of Hindustan Motors/Hindustan Motor Finance Corporation Ltd and their family members wound up their indefinite sit-in protest at the collectorate on Friday late night, a worker said. They began their protest on Friday morning demanding back their land or a job in PCA Automobiles India Private Ltd. Car maker PCA Automobiles located in Tiruvallur is a joint venture between global automotive manufacturer Stellantis Group and India’s C.K. Birla group. Hindustan Motors Ltd/Hindustan Motor Finance belonged to the C.K. Birla group. “The Collector spoke to CPI’s Tamil Nadu unit Secretary R. Mutharasan and assured him that the matter will be sorted out on Monday and requested the protest be called off,” E. Srinivasan, Secretary of the Hindustan Motors Land Giving Farmers Progressive Association told IANS. “We have called off the
protest for now. If the matter is not resolved then we will restart our protest,” H. Ismail, one of the retrenched workers whose grandfather’s land was acquired by Hindustan Motors in 1968 told IANS. The protest was flagged off by CPI MP K. Subbarayan Friday morning. According to a worker the state government does not want a protest on the day of Gandhi Jayanthi. The workers were earlier employed by Hindustan Motors Ltd/Hindustan Motor Finance Corporation Ltd at its Tiruvallur car plant rolling out Japanese Mitsubishi Motors Corporation’s models like Lancer, Pajero and also under contract manufacturing deal for Isuzu Motors MU 7 model. Later about 175 permanent workers and over 150 contract workers were retrenched by Hindustan Motor Finance Corporation and the plant was transferred to PCA Automobiles. “We were retrenched despite an agreement signed between the two joint venture partners that the workers will be absorbed by PCA Automobiles,” Ismail said. “Based on this Employee Transfer Agreement,

Hindustan Motor Finance Corporation got permission from the Tamil Nadu government to transfer the plant and other assets to PCA Automobiles. Post transfer of assets, the workers -permanent and on contract -- were sent out,” Srinivasan had told IANS. According to Srinivasan, Hindustan Motors acquired about 356 acres of agricultural land from 1968 at Tiruvallur for its earthmoving equipment division. Initially Hindustan Motors bought the land directly from the owners. But it was not able to get the extent it wanted and sought the District Collector’s help. Later the company deposited the land cost with the government treasury and the government transferred the land to the company, Srinivasan said. At that point of time, the District Collector had assured that the land owners will be employed by the company at its earthmoving equipment plant.

The decision irked farmers and many of them protested on Saturday in several parts of the two states, laying siege to the houses of many ministers, MPs and MLAs. Farmers broke police barricades and faced water cannons, including near Chief Minister Khattar’s house in Karnal. In Punjab, farmers protested outside the residences of several Congress legislators, including state assembly Speaker Rana K P Singh in Rupnagar and MLA Harjot Kamal in Moga.

Global Covid deaths surpass 5 million
PA R I S, O C T 1 ( R E UTERS): Worldwide deaths related to COVID-19 surpassed 5 million on Friday, according to a Reuters tally, with unvaccinated people particularly exposed to the virulent Delta strain. The variant has exposed the wide disparities in vaccination rates between rich and poor nations, and the upshot of vaccine hesitancy in some western nations. More than half of all global deaths reported on a seven-day average were in the United States, Russia, Brazil, Mexico and India. While it took just over a year for the COVID-19 death toll to hit 2.5 million, the next 2.5 million deaths were recorded in just under eight months, according to a Reuters analysis. An average of 8,000 deaths were reported daily across the world over the last week, or around five deaths every minute. However, the global death rate has been

slowing in recent weeks. There has been increasing focus in recent days on getting vaccines to poorer nations, where many people are yet to receive a first dose, even as their richer counterparts have begun giving booster shots. More than half of the world has yet to receive at least one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine, according to Our World in Data.
The World Health Organization this week said its COVAX distribution programme would, for the first time, distribute shots only to countries with the lowest levels of coverage. Co-led by the WHO, COVAX has since January largely allocated doses proportionally among its 140plus beneficiary states according to population size. “For the October sup-
Muslim Brotherhood launches campaign against India
What was novel this time was a number of ‘news articles’ also promoted this trend, albeit in their own style, mostly connected with the MB, including the Al Jazeera. The target seemed India, but the actual target was Saudi Arabia. The campaign was essentially targeting Saudi and the UAE, and particularly Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, for keeping a good relation with India. This was not one off campaign, and the QTPi Nexus has been targeting Saudi and UAE, questioning their ‘right’ to be the leader of Islamic world. The idea is obvious – by discrediting Mohammed bin Salman, the new ‘Prince’ of Turkey, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan would be crowned as the rightful leader of Ummah. The Ertgurul Ghazi was prelude. The Ottoman Empire is in remaking, the report said. The report said India was not the only country
targeted for this economic boycott. The campaign in also targeted France, asking to boycott French products. It is not merely a geo-strategic move. There is a solid economic logic behind it. Turkey holds annual Halal Exhibition, which is trying to build itself as key arbiter on the matter. By creating the subaltern culture of boycott through social media, they would also create a potent weapon. Moreover, once the Nexus takes centre stage in deciding some arbitrage over Halal certification, this would create an exclusionary economy of gigantic proportions. The economic power this nexus could build will not only affect Muslim world but would dictate terms all over the world – in the name of selling this huge market. The petro-dollars of Qatar (gas-dollars to be precise), may not last forever to sustain the radical Islamists of Muslim Brotherhood, it added.

ply we designed a different methodology, only covering participants with low sources of supply,” Mariangela Simao, WHO Assistant Director General for Access to Vaccines, said in a recording of a conference presentation last week posted on the WHO’s website. The United States, which has been battling vaccine misinformation that has caused about one-third of the population to avoid inoculations, surpassed 700,000 deaths on Friday, the highest toll of any country. U.S. cases and hospitalizations have been trending lower, but health officials are bracing for a possible resurgence as cooler weather forces more activities indoors. Russia reported 887 coronavirus-related deaths on Friday, the largest singleday death toll it has recorded since the pandemic began and the fourth day in a row it has set that record. Only 33% of Russia’s eligible
population has received a first vaccine dose. read more As a region, South America has the highest death toll in the world accounting for 21% of all reported deaths, followed by North America and Eastern Europe contributing more than 14% of all fatalities each, according to Reuters analysis. However, India, one of the first countries ravaged by the Delta variant, has gone from an average of 4,000 deaths a day to less than 300 as its vaccination campaign is rolled out. About 47% of India’s eligible population has received a first shot, with officials administering around 7,896,950 doses per day over the past week, a Reuters analysis of Our World in Data showed. The Delta variant is now the dominant strain around the globe and has been reported in 187 out of 194 World Health Organization member countries.
The body does not have sway, however, over matters of defense, security and the economy. The vast majority of the nearly 300 candidates are men, with nearly all hailing from the same family or tribe in several districts. The country’s electoral law, which distinguishes between born and naturalised Qatari citizens, and bars the latter from electoral participation, has drawn criticism from rights groups. In a report last month, Human Rights Watch described the system as “discriminatory”, excluding thousands of Qataris from running or voting. The disqualifications have sparked minor tribal protests that led to several arrests. Sheikh Tamim, who previously elected all the council members, will handpick the remaining 15 members of the body and
retain ultimate authority over decision-making in the energy-rich country. Like other Gulf Arab states, Qatar bans political parties. Foreign workers outnumber Qatari citizens in the tiny country of 2.8 million nearly nine to one. Among the sheikhdoms of the Persian Gulf, only Kuwait’s parliament has genuine sway over the government, with lawmakers empowered to introduce laws and question ministers. The elected body, however, clashes frequently and raucously with the emir-appointed Cabinet, blocking major initiatives and hampering economic development. The move brings Qatar more in line with the United Arab Emirates, where citizens vote for a limited number of seats in a consultative parliament that advises the government.
Taliban to deploy suicide bombers at Afghan borders
Japan urges preparations for 6th Covid wave amid lull in new cases
Duterte announces retirement from politics
KABUL, OCT 2 (AGENCIES): Taliban have created an exclusive battalion of suicide bombers that will be deployed to the borders of Afghanistan particularly in Badakhshan province, reports said. The deputy governor Mullah Nisar Ahmad Ahmadi of the province has told the media about the creation of the battalion of suicide bombers at the northeastern province of Badakhshan which borders Tajikistan and China, reported Khaama Press. Ahmadi said that the battalion is named Lashkar-e-Mansoori (‘Mansoor army’) and will be deployed to the borders of the country. He added that the battalion is the same as the one that would conduct suicide attacks targeting the security forces of the previous Afghan government. “The defeat of the US would not be possible if not for this battalion. These brave men would wear explosive waistcoats and would detonate the US bases in Afghanistan. These are people with literally no fear who devote themselves for the consent of Allah,” said Ahmadi, according to Khaama Press.
TOKYO, OCT 2 (AGENCIES): The Japanese health ministry has sent a notice to prefectural governments requesting that they review their medical systems in preparation for a sixth wave of coronavirus infections in the winter, when a viral spread is feared. The main pillars of measures to cope with another case surge are securing medical workers and beds for COVID-19 patients -- including at temporary medical facilities -- on the premise that Japan could be hit with around the same level of infections seen during the fifth wave this summer, when medical care systems came under severe strain. Through these measures, officials hope to provide a seamless response to patients, The Mainichi reported. In response to the notice sent out on Oct. 1, prefectural governments will prepare systems by the end of November. The state of emergency covering 19 prefectures across Japan was fully lifted from the beginning of October, but the number of people infected with the coronavirus during the fifth wave greatly exceeded the planned numbers of hospital beds, and there were
DOHA, OCT 2 (AP): Qatari citizens voted for the first time in elections for an advisory council on Saturday — a long-delayed step that aims to give people in the autocratic sheikhdom slightly more say over how they’re ruled. The “experiment”, as Qatari officials have described the vote, comes as the 2022 World Cup casts a global spotlight on the hereditarily ruled nation and generates pressure for reform. Qatar first introduced plans for the legislative elections in its 2003 constitution, but authorities repeatedly postponed the vote. Qataris on Saturday headed to the polls to choose two-thirds of the 45-member Shura Council, which drafts laws, approves state budges, debates major issues and provides advice to ruling emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani.
numerous cases of people unable to be hospitalized dying at home. This time around, the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare presented its definition of medical system preparations to the prefectural governments. One senior ministry official described it as a “comprehensive strategy” based on the fact that it is difficult for medical institutions to increase beds dedicated to COVID-19 patients at the same time as maintaining general medical care. Specifically, the strategy involves establishing regional systems for doctors and other medical workers to join in monitoring people’s conditions after getting a positive COVID-19 test -- a task previously done by local public health centers alone. When infections spread, all infected people will be contacted either on the day or the day after their positive result, and depending on their condition, they will be able to have their health monitored or undergo medical examinations. Those recuperating at home will be able to receive medical care such as antibody cocktail treatments
to prevent them from developing severe COVID-19 symptoms. For at least severely ill COVID-19 patients and those with moderate symptoms who need oxygen, as well as those with higher risks of developing severe symptoms, preparations will be made to quickly hospitalize them. Furthermore, should it take time to find hospitals to accept patients, local governments will utilize makeshift medical facilities or hospitalization waiting stations to create a path to hospitalization while offering the patients peace of mind. Coordination of hospital transfers if the person needs to be hospitalized again after recovering will also be centralized. Regional medical workers will be listed up, and officials will make decisions in advance so that those workers can be dispatched if necessary. Prefectural governments will be asked to settle on a course of action in October. In an Oct. 1 news conference, health minister Norihisa Tamura commented, “We’d like to collaborate with prefectures, and improve the system to provide medical care.”
Rodrigo Duterte
MANILA, OCT 2 (AP): Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte says he is backing out of an announced plan to run for vice president in next year’s elections and will retire from politics after his term ends. Duterte announced the surprise decision Saturday after accompanying his former longtime aide, Senator Bong Go, who instead filed his own candidacy for the vice presidency at a Commission on Elections centre. Philippine presidents are limited by the constitution to a single six-year term and opponents had said they would question the legality of Duterte’s announced vice presidential run before the Supreme Court. Duterte took office in 2016 and launched a crackdown on illegal drugs that left more than 6,000 mostly petty suspects dead and alarmed Western governments and human rights groups.

NEW DELHI, OCT 2 (IANS): The Qatar-TurkeyPakistan (QTPi) nexus with the blessings of the Muslim Brotherhood (MB) is becoming the new hub for radical Islamists. A new report by Disinfolab says the MB, laced with fake news and and two media weapons, Al Jazeera and TRT World, launched a campaign against India –targeting New Delhi’s economic interests. A hashtag on Twitter #BoycottIndianProducts was launched a few days ago, and has been going on since. While the nexus tried to give it a colour that it was triggered by the unfortunate incident in Assam, which was deplorable, and the guilty should be brought to justice, be as it may, the trigger was mere excuse. This was not the first time the trend was attempted. It was started in 2018, and since then it’s an annual ritual. The objective is to give it momentum gradually, the Disinfolab report said. And since one incident won’t justify it, they needed the whole gamut of fake news and propaganda. As expected, a great deal of these handles are being run from Pakistan and Turkey, while the trend seems to have originated in Egypt.

India restrict Aus to 143/4 on Day 3
GOLD COAST, OCT 2 (PTI): India dictated terms to mighty Australia who did everything they could to survive the difficult overs under lights and finish the third day of the rainmarred pink ball Test at 143 for four here on Saturday. At stumps, Australia trailed the visitors by 234 runs after veteran seamer Jhulan Goswami (2/27) bowled beautifully and struck twice to leave them at 63 for two at one stage. India declared their first innings at 377 for eight. Mithali Raj’s side was lucky as the umpire gave Australian captain Meg Lanning (38) out wrongly, raising his finger despite an inside edge and bringing to an end her ominous stay in the middle. On that occasion, the lucky bowler was Pooja Vastrakar (2/31). After Tahlia McGrath (28) hit Vastrakar’s wide and short delivery straight to Smriti Mandhana at point to leave the hosts at 119 for four, Goswami was brought back with two slips, a gully and a silly

mid-off, but Ellyse Perry (27 batting) and Ashleigh Gardner (13 batting) survived. Earlier, Goswami struck twice to reduce Australia to 69 for two at tea after India declared their first innings. India got the timing of declaration right considering that batting is most difficult in the second session of a day/night Test with pink ball owing to factors related to light.
Australia recovered nicely after losing Beth Mooney early as the duo of Alyssa Healy (29) and skipper Lanning not only steadied the ship but also played some exquisite shots. However, shortly before the break, Goswami delivered for the visitors with her magnificent bowling. After softening Healy with a few short stuffs, Goswami bowled a length ball, got it to move just enough for the batter to
nick it to the waiting hands of wicketkeeper Taniya Bhatia. This was after the 38-year-old fast bowler cleaned up Monney’s stumps with one that came back at the left-handed opener, even as the batter looked to flick it on the leg side. For India Deepti Sharma made a fine 66, finishing as the team’s second best scorer, a day after opener Smriti Mandhana’s
magnificent maiden hundred in the format. Earlier in the day, India dug in deep, instead of going for quick runs, to reach 359 for seven at dinner. Resuming at their overnight score of 276 for five after rain and lightning had brought a premature end to the second day’s play at the Carrara Oval, the Indians scored 83 runs for the loss of Taniya Bhatia and Pooja Vastrakar’s wickets in the long first session. Taniya made 22 off 75 balls, while Vastrakar made 13. At the dinner break, Deepti Sharma was batting on 58. Meanwhile, Sharma, who started the day on 12, got to her second Test fifty with a sweep behind square, reaching the landmark in 148 balls with the help of five boundaries. Ellyse Perry gave the team another breakthrough when she had Pooja Vastrakar brilliantly caught by Beth Mooney at gully as the batter looked to drive through covers.

N U R - S U LTA N, K A ZAKHSTAN, OCT 2 (AFP): Alison Van Uytvanck came from a set down to claim her fifth WTA title, beating Yulia Putintseva 1-6, 6-4, 6-3 in the final of the Astana Open on Saturday. The 27-year-old Belgian, who is ranked 89th in the world, had not won a title since the Tashkent
tournament in late September 2019. In front of her home crowd in Nur-Sultan, Putintseva, a 26-year-old Kazakh ranked 47th in the world, started strongly. After Van Uytvanck won the opening game, Putintseva took the next six dropping just five points to clinch the first set. The Belgian hit back in the opening
game of the second set and although Putintseva broke twice so did the Belgian. The Kazakh broke again at the start of the final set but her inability to hold her own serve cost her the chance to add a third career title. Van Uytvanck again broke three times, including the final game of the match.

LONDON, OCT 2 (AFP): Timo Werner fired Chelsea to the top of the Premier League as the German’s late goal inspired a controversy-filled 3-1 win against 10-man Southampton on Saturday. Thomas Tuchel’s side ended a frustrating week on a high note thanks to Werner’s contribution to a dramatic finale at Stamford Bridge. After successive 1-0 defeats against Manchester City and Juventus, the Blues were in danger of another disappointing result with just minutes remaining in rain-soaked west London. Trevoh Chalobah’s early opener for Chelsea had been cancelled out by a James Ward-Prowse penalty in the second half. But Ward-Prowse was sent off for an ugly lunge on Jorginho and Chelsea took full advantage as Werner restored their lead with six minutes left before Ben Chilwell wrapped up the points. Chelsea sit two points clear of second-placed Liverpool, with Jurgen Klopp’s side able to regain pole position if they beat cham-

KOHIMA, OCT 2 (NPN): A five-day football referee clinic held at Indira Gandhi Stadium, organized by Kohima Town Club (KTC) concluded here Saturday. Instructors for the clinic were All India Football Federation (AIFF) referee instructor Joy Chandra Singh and national referee Priyobarta from Manipur. A total of 28 partici-
pants, including four girls, from Kohima, Dimapur, Phek, and Kiphire took part in the clinic. In a brief remark, KTC president Dr Viketoulie Pienyü told the trainees that the clinic was only the beginning for them and that their commitment towards the profession would guarantee their rate of success. Encouraging the trainees, Dr Viketoulie said among the trainees who
took part in the previous clinic held in 2018, three referees had now received Referee Identification Number (RIN) which, he added, was a significant boost for their professional career. He urged the newly trained referees to improve their skills through local matches. He expressed optimism that the club wishes to see their objective of organising the clinics by
training individuals who would one day be part of national and international referee squads. The president further pointed out that while the club which comprises of football aficionados, aims to promote the game, at the same time it felt the need to train referees who are also equally important for the development of the game. Instructor Joy Chandra Singh while sharing a few words urged the trainees to stay fit and always keep themselves well acquainted with the rules of the game. Sharing his observations on the level of referees in Nagaland, Singh said there was a dire need to increase the standard of the game in the State. He disclosed that he had made suggestions to Nagaland Football Association to hold RIN drives for the newly trained referees. In his concluding remark, Singh exhorted the trainees to be honest in their conduct as they go on to officiate matches someday.
pions Manchester City on Sunday. Frustrated by what he labelled a “strange display” against Juventus on Wednesday and an equally lacklustre loss to City last weekend, Tuchel made five changes in a bid to shake up his “tired” team. Ruben Loftus-Cheek was handed his first league start for Chelsea since September 2020, while Jorginho, Kai Havertz and Marcos Alonso were among those dropped. Tuchel showed he had not lost his midas touch as three of the players he brought into the team combined for the ninth-minute opener. Loftus-Cheek towered above the Southampton defence to flick Chilwell’s corner to the far post, where Chalobah dived to head home from close range. Loftus-Cheek rifled narrowly wide from 18 yards and Chilwell’s closerange shot was repelled by Alex McCarthy before Romelu Lukaku was correctly denied by an offside flag after he slotted home. Werner thought he had doubled Chelsea’s lead just before half-time when
Timo Werner stayed alert to slot home from close range and bounce back from his earlier disallowed effort.
he rose above two defenders to head in from Callum Hudson-Odoi’s cross. But, with both teams back in position to kick off, a late VAR intervention convinced referee Martin Atkinson to rule that Cesar Azpilicueta had clipped Kyle Walker-Peters’ heel much earlier in the build-up to the goal. It was a debatable decision and Tuchel was incandescent with rage, waving his arms in protest as he briefly marched into the pitch -- an incursion that earned a booking as boos cascaded down from the stands. Shaken by that controversial moment, Chelsea
lost their grip and Southampton took advantage to equalise in the 61st minute. Teenage right-back Tino Livramento, who left Chelsea in the close-season, made an incisive raid that forced a panicked foul from Chilwell in the penalty area. Atkinson pointed to the spot and Ward-Prowse stepped up to send Edouard Mendy the wrong way with the penalty. But WardProwse could have no complaints when Atkinson sent him off after consulting the pitchside monitor to review a nasty foul that left substi-
tute Jorginho writhing in pain with 14 minutes left. That proved the turning point as Chelsea took advantage of their numerical superiority in the 84th minute. Ross Barkley sprayed a fine pass out to Azpilicueta and his halfvolleyed cross was perfect for Werner to shoot low past McCarthy from close range.
