‘NE part of mainstream India’: Rijiju hails Centre’s move to lift AFSPA from parts of NER
NEW DELHI, APR 2 (PTI): Citing the “historic” decision of the Centre to lift the Armed Forces Special Powers Act from “major parts” of Assam, Nagaland and Manipur, the BJP on Saturday asserted that peace has returned to the North East region which has now become a part of the “mainstream”. Union Law minister Kiren Rijiju, who is a Lok Sabha MP from Arunachal Pradesh, said Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s twopronged approach of development and dialogue with insurgent groups in dealing with various challenges in the region has paid dividends. A “colourful, beautiful and peaceful” Northeast awaits people from across the country, he said at a press conference while appealing for travel and investment in the region. The Congress had left the region “devastated”, he
Fuel prices hiked by 80 paise a litre DIMAPUR, APR 2 (NPN): After one-day hiatus, the state-owned oil marketing companies once again increased the prices of petrol and diesel by 80 paise per litre across the country on Saturday. After the rate revision on Saturday, petrol price in Dimapur stood at Rs.104.50 per litre while diesel price has increased to Rs.90.92 per litre. In the state capital Kohima, prices of petrol and diesel have soared to Rs.105.62 per litre and Rs.91.81 per litre respectively. This is the 10th increase in prices since the ending of a four-andhalf-month long hiatus in rate revision on March 22.
More invited to consultative meeting on AFSPA DIMAPUR, APR 2 (NPN): State government has extended invitation to four more tribal organizations to attend the consultative meeting on AFSPA scheduled to be held at Rhododendron Hall, Central Police Officers’ Mess, Chümoukedima on April 4 at 10 a.m. In a notice, home commissioner Abhijit Sinha has requested presidents and two representatives each from Nagaland Garo Tribal Council, Kachari Tribal Council Nagaland, Karbi (Mikir) Union Nagaland and Kuki Inpi Nagaland to attend the meeting.
alleged and added that Prime Minister Modi had the big heart the region needed. People of the region wanted the government to reach out to them, which has happened under him, the minister said. Modi’s vision of lifting the AFSPA completely from the region will also be realised, Rijiju said. “We used to hear that the Northeast has to be brought into the country’s mainstream. I can say today that it is already in the country’s mainstream,” Rijiju said, stressing that the region is developing at a fast pace and will become an important economic hub of the country. The region has been given due attention since Modi became prime minister in 2014, he said, adding that no one could have thought that he will visit the region over 50 times in his tenure so far.
Kiren Rijiju
Besides the prime minister, other ministers have been regularly visiting the region to help in its development, and the earlier sense of “alienation and step-motherly treatment” is now gone from the minds of people there, Rijiju said. Modi turned the “look east” policy into the “act east” policy with development works and peace initiatives going hand in hand, he said, adding that the region is now in a “transformational mode”. The region has been allocated over Rs
76,000 crore in the recent budget, a hike of Rs 7500 crore, he said noting that the central government’s flagship schemes have boosted road and mobile phone connectivity there. A “four-cornered attack of development” has ensured that no one loses out, he said. A safe, secure and developed Northeast “‘is a very good news” for India, he said while pointing out the security challenges the region has traditionally posed. He noted that the AFSPA was lifted from Tripura in 2015 and from most of Arunachal Pradesh as well, with the Centre signing peace accords with various insurgent groups to defuse the decades-old crisis. The government has also been working to settle all border disputes among different states in the region, he said and credited Home Minister Amit Shah for executing Modi’s vision on
the ground by constantly holding dialogues with chief ministers. BJP spokesperson Gaurav Bhatia also lauded the Modi government for its work to restore peace and boost development in the Northeast and asserted that it has resolved major issues facing the region and the country. The AFSPA, under which a geographical location is declared as disturbed area to facilitate operations of the armed forces, will now be applicable fully in 31 districts and partially in 12 districts of four states in the Northeast – Assam, Nagaland, Manipur and Arunachal Pradesh. These four states together comprise 90 districts. The Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act, 1958, was completely withdrawn in Meghalaya in 2018, Tripura in 2015 and Mizoram in the 1980s.

NSF to hold series of agitation for total withdrawal of AFSPA DIMAPUR, APR 2 (NPN): Naga Students’ Federation (NSF) has resolved to ensure that the contentious Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act is “repealed by the Government of India or completely lifted from the entire Naga homeland.” Towards achieving this end, NSF president Kegwayhun Tep and general secretary Siipuni Ng Philo, in a press note, said that the federation would be taking up a series of democratic agitation(s) in consonance with the collective aspiration of the Naga people. NSF said it outrightly rejected the “ploy of the Government of India” to please some few sections of the North Eastern people by lifting the draconian AFSPA 1958 from some certain pockets of the region while still allowing the inhumane Act to be in operation in almost all parts of the Naga homeland. While not denying that the areas falling under 15 police stations in
Nagaland was set to benefit from “policy of the government of India”, NSF said it was appalled that “a major chunk of the Naga homeland spread across the four Indian States of Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur and Nagaland are yet again classified as ‘Disturbed Areas’.” NSF said it wondered as to what yardsticks were used to lift the Act from certain areas of the NE region as police stations within Naga homeland, which have almost perfect law and order record(s), projecting a relatively peaceful and tranquil environment were completely left out. NSF said such step of the Centre was rubbing more salt into the wounds of the Nagas who were still reeling under the shock of the Oting incidents wherein 14 innocent Naga souls were mercilessly massacred by the Indian armed forces in a botched military operation. The federation wondered as to whether Centre
had any regard or respect for the lives, emotions and sentiments of the Naga people. NSF also reiterated its earlier stand that the Nagas do not merit the Act which has empowered the Indian military and para military war machines “with unlimited powers to extend their evil claws and judicial impunity to arrest, torture, kill and to commit everything inhuman.” It also vehemently denounced the oppressive, repressive and inhuman instrument allegedly being used by Government of India to further their colonial mindset of subjugating and dividing the Nagas. Condemns Chasa incident: Meanwhile, NSF has condemned the high handedness of the armed forces at Chasa village of Tirap district, Arunachal Pradesh wherein two Naga youths-- Nokphua Wangpan and Ramwang Wangsu, who were returning from a river after fishing, were (Cont’d on p-8)

I TA NAG A R / D I B RU GARH, APR 2 (PTI/ AGENCIES): In another case of alleged “mistaken identity” the Army’s 12 Para special unit shot and seriously injured two civilians in Tirap district of Arunachal Pradesh, sources said on Saturday. According to sources, the incident happened at Chasa village Friday evening when the two villagers, identified as Nokphya Wangdan
(28) and Ramwang Wangsu (23), were returning home after fishing in a river. The incident comes months after 14 people were shot dead by the Army’s 21 Paras in a botched antimilitancy operation in Nagaland’s Mon district, around 150 km from Tirap. The incident in Mon district, happened on December 4-5, and had triggered widespread protests, demanding the withdrawal of AFSPA.
In Saturday’s incident, the two wounded villagers were sent to the Assam Medical College and Hospital (AMCH) in Dibrugarh by the Army for treatment, the sources said. An Army source maintained that the incident was preceded after receiving “ credible information about the movement of armed rebels and an ambush was laid by the special forces.” (Cont’d on p-8)

JCCV to stage sit-in protest Wear mask in public places: H&FW DIMAPUR, APR 2 (NPN): Joint Coordination Committee of Villages (JCCV) for Dimapur district announced its decision to stage a sit-in demonstration on April 11 and 12 outside the office complex of SDO Dhansiripar, against the state government’s failure to respond to its demand even after three months. JCCV convenor LK Swu and co-convener Tsithrongse Sangtam stated that the decision to hold sit-in demonstration at a meeting of executive members held on April 2, 2022. The committee said there has been no response from the government to the impasse of “arbitrary merger” of Dhansiripar sub-division along with some villages with the newly created district of Chumoukedima. It also announced that the villages under JCCV would boycott any government dealings till the impasse was resolved. It lamented that the authority while remaining deaf to the just demand of JCCV was hell-bent on keeping Dhansiripar sub-division under Chumoukedima against the desire of the people.
DIMAPUR, APR 2 (NPN): Even as daily Covid-19 cases have significantly declined and all Covid restrictions withdrawn in the State, Health & Family Welfare (H&FW) department however urged all to use face mask in public places for safety of all. Asserting that Covid-19 was here to stay, H&FW said no one knows exactly when and how the next wave will be. Therefore, the department also strongly recommended all to get inoculated against Covid-19. “Vaccination for high-risk groups like those with comorbidities is strongly recommended,” it added. In its weekly bulletin released on Saturday, H&FW department said that the weekly sample positivity rate stood at 0.5% for three
consecutive weeks and remained below 2% for the past 6 weeks. During the week (March 26 to April 1) six new cases were detected from 1,118 samples. In March, a total of 69 cases were recorded as compared to 2203 in January and 1003 in February 2022, the department stated. Further, only one Covid-19 death, with existing comorbidities, was reported from Dimapur during the week. Meanwhile, Nagaland on Saturday recorded one fresh Covid-19 cases from Dimapur, taking the total caseload to 35477. working together in coordination. He stressed that in order to bring and end to this pandemic, a large share of the world needed to be immune to the virus and the
safest way to achieve this was to get inoculated. “Vaccines are a technology that humanity has often relied on in the past to bring down the death toll of infectious diseases,” he said. While stating
that the best vaccines were highly effective at preventing hospitalization and death, SIO, however, said it would take coordinated efforts to stop a pandemic. Reiterating that vaccination was the only long-term solution, SIO urged all to get inoculated. ZSUN urges DoSE to reconsider rationalisation of schools, teachers
DIMAPUR: Zeliangrong Students’ Union Nagaland (ZSUN) has expressed dismay over the move by the School Education department on rationalisation of schools and teachers in Peren district. In a press note, ZSUN through its media cell said that the decision of redeployment of teachers was is being done without considering the practical ground reality that student community and public were facing. ZSUN said that the present system of rationalization of teachers was not feasible in the district and pointed out that it was unfair to transfer dedicated teachers to another place as they (teachers) had been sincerely discharging their duties for the betterment of student community. ZSUN has appealed to the Education department to reconsider the decision and put “on hold” the order and come out with fresh order in Peren district in the greater interest of the student community. The union further said that
“no random cross-transfer be accepted/made without ascertaining the actual position of schools & teachers in Peren district”. It said that if teachers are allowed to be only in their preferred posting place, then the outcome of students would be adversely impacted. Being government employees, ZSUN said teachers were bound to carry out their duty and give their optimal knowledge to the student community. ZSUN said that transferring teachers would only create chaos and confusion in the minds of student community as it would take time for students to get acquainted with new ways and means of teaching methods by new teachers with different ideas. ZSUN further pointed out that there were some government schools with acute shortage of teachers and in some cases with excess number of teachers. Therefore, ZSUN sought the intervention of the School Education department and recommendation committee to look into the matter.

Abel informed the camp was a precursor to the celebration. He said that the youth wanted to give back to the society and make sure that all the colony members were medically fit and healthy in the run up to the jubilee. Observing that there was a common practice in the Naga society where people only took and did not give back, he said LAYO wanted to “break that stereotype” and give back to the society in the least of ways it could. Sharing his observation on the changes that
took place with the colony, Abel said it had become comparatively peaceful with little to no law and order situation in recent times. He pointed out that the colony was infamously tagged as one of the most notorious colonies in Kohima in the past with a high number of illegal and immoral activities. He, however said this had changed through the prayers of the mothers. LAYO president also disclosed that the rise in tenancy within the colony in recent times was a notable indication of the im-
provement in overall living condition in the colony. He said the youth were working to declare the colony, a tobacco free and had openly banned all tobacco products. Abel said there were around 450 youths in the colony according to the latest census conducted within the colony. Various services provided during the camp included, free consultation, family planning, COVID vaccination, free immunisation, lab test & Noncommunicable Diseases (NCD) screening and free medicines. 26 Jaintia villages want to be part of M’laya
File photo of Assam-Meghalaya border.
SHILLONG, APRIL 2 (PTI): At least 26 villages in disputed Meghalaya’s Jaintia Hills have written to the state government voicing their concern at the possibility of being “given away” to the neighbouring state of Assam, officials said. At a meeting held on Friday, village elders from 26 villages under an umbrella organization called Labang Nongphyllut Pangam Raliang Area Committee (LNPRAC) at Lamarang village, resolved to remain in
Meghalaya. Block I in Jaintia Hills district and Block II in RiBhoi district are part of the 6 areas with more “complicated” differences between Assam and Meghalaya that will be resolved during the second round of border talks. The other four areas are Langpih, Borduar, Nongwah-Mawtamur and PsiarKhanduli. LNPRAC adviser Erwin Sutnga told PTI : “Village elders from at least 26
villages in the area have met me. They have written to the state government of Meghalaya on their desire to remain within the jurisdiction of the state.” He said that another 10 villages will also soon submit their resolution on the issue. According to Sutnga, the villages under Block I and Block II were originally under the United KhasiJaintia Hills district and followed the land ownership and the jurisdiction of the
tribal chiefs (Syiems). He however, said a notification by the then Assam Governor in April 1951 creating another district – the then Mikir Hills (now the Karbi Anglong district) – resulted in some of these villages being transferred to the then new district. “Several objections to the transfer of villages went unheard and have remained unresolved till date,” he said. Meanwhile, at least two persons were injured along the Assam-Meghalaya border at Jatong village in the disputed Block II area when unidentified miscreants attacked, officials said. The incident took place Friday evening and following the attack, police personnel from both Meghalaya and Assam arrived at Jatalong to disperse the crowd that had gathered there, they said. The area has been tense for some time. “Today, a magistrate from the district headquarter of Nongpoh in Ri-Bhoi district was also deputed to monitor the situation,” a senior district official said.

Manipur police with the drug consignment seized from the two accused on Saturday.
Correspondent IMPHAL, APR 2: Police in Manipur’s Tengnoupal district on Saturday arrested two persons, including a police constable, after brown sugar was recovered from the car they were traveling in. The seized drugs would be worth over Rs 7.59 crore in the international market, the police said. The arrested police constable was identified as Letkholun Haokip (34), a constable in the state police department currently posted at the reserved line of
the Churachandpur district police. His associate was identified as Ngamkhohao Haokip (22) of Sonphai village of Churachandpur district. He is the driver of the Honda City car (MN026-6350), which came from Moreh side. Cong claims cross-voting by AIUDF in Assam RS polls G U WA H AT I , A P R 2 (PTI): The Congress on Saturday alleged that the AIUDF indulged in crossvoting in the recently-held Rajya Sabha election in Assam and cast their vote in favour of the ruling BJPled alliance’s candidates, resulting in the defeat of the Opposition’s joint nominee. Leader of Opposition Debabrata Saikia, addressing a press conference here, said, “We want to clarify that out of 27 Congress MLAs, 25 voted for our joint candidate. One vote was disqualified while another one voted for the ruling alliance’s candidate.” The disqualified vote was from Siddique Ahmed and the other was from Sashi Kanta Das, who had already declared that he would support the ruling alliance’s candidates. Both MLAs have been suspended from the Congress. Election for two Rajya Sabha seats from Assam was held on Thursday with the ruling alliance’s candidates, Pabitra Margherita and Rwngra Narzary, emerging winners against outgoing MP and the Opposition’s joint nominee Ripun Bora. Margherita polled 46 votes and Narzary 44, while Bora managed just 35 votes. All 126 members of the Assembly had voted, with one vote being disqualified. Saikia claimed that all
the remaining 25 Congress MLAs voted for Bora as did the lone CPI(M) MLA and Independent legislator, accounting for total 27 out of 35 votes that Bora received. “The party that had assured of 15 votes gave only eight in our favour and the rest went elsewhere,” he said, apparently referring to the AIUDF which has 15 members in the House and had announced its support for Bora’s candidature. Saikia also pointed that the Congress has moved a breach of privilege motion in the state Assembly over BJP legislators’ purported remarks inside as well as outside the House that Congress MLAs had voted for the ruling alliance’s candidates. “The Speaker has assured us of looking into it,” he added. The senior Congress leader questioned the AIUDF naming its agent for the election without consulting the other parties in the Opposition camp. “They mysteriously announced their polling agent without even informing us. Why they did it is a riddle to me,” he said. Saikia maintained that the Congress’ agent for the polls, Prithviraj Sathe, was named by the party’s central leadership, which was authorised by the state’s legislature party to nominate the polling agent.

An FIR has been registered under NDPS Act against the police constable and his associate and investigation has been initiated to find the kingpins. Shivpal Yadav starts following Modi, Yogi on Twitter
NEW DELHI, APRIL 2 (IANS): Maharashtra cabinet minister and senior NCP leader Nawab Malik has moved the Supreme Court, challenging the Bombay High Court, which declined his interim bail in a habeas corpus petition. Malik has claimed his arrest was completely illegal. On March 15, the Bombay high court rejected Malik’s interim application seeking immediate release in a case of money laundering registered against him by the Enforcement Directorate (ED). Malik is in judicial custody till April 4 and he was arrested on February 23 based on an FIR registered against terrorist Dawood Ibrahim and his aides. The High Court held that Malik was arrested by the ED, and subsequently remanded to custody following due process and there was no reason for it to pass

any interim order for his release. Denying relief to Malik, the High Court had said that just because the special Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) court’s order remanding him in custody is not in his favour, it does not make it illegal or wrong. Malik has claimed that the High Court refusing to grant him interim release is in violation of the settled position in Arnab Goswami vs Maharashtra government case.

Warmest March in 122 yrs, lowest rainfall since 1908 NEW DELHI, APR 2 (PTI): India recorded its warmest March in 122 years with a severe heat wave scorching large swathes of the country in the month, the India Meteorological Department said on Saturday. The weather department attributed the unusual heat to the lack of rainfall due to the absence of active western disturbances over north India and any major system over south India. The country as a whole recorded a rainfall of 8.9 mm, which was 71 per cent less than its long period average rainfall of 30.4 mm. It was also the third-lowest precipitation in March since
1901 after 7.2 mm in 1909 and 8.7 mm in 1908. “Over the country as a whole, the average maximum temperature (33.10 degrees Celsius) recorded in March 2022 is the highest ever in the last 122 years,” the IMD said in a statement. The MeT department said the country’s average mean temperature of 26.67 degrees Celsius in March was the second highest after 26.671 degrees Celsius recorded in March 2010. The countrywide average minimum temperature of 20.24 degrees Celsius in March was the third highest in 122 years after 20.26 degrees Celsius in 1953 and 20.25 degrees Celsius in 2010.
original spinning wheel, and many other things related to his life.” “Today, while living in a free country, we have to remember the sacrifice of those fellow revolutionaries,” he added. Mann later told reporters that he comes from the land of martyrs, and in every village there are people who have fought for the country’s freedom. He said that nearly every household in Punjab has charkha on which women spin yarn while humming traditional songs.
“I come from a land of shaheeds like Lala Lajpat Rai, Madanlal Dhingra, Shaheed-e-Azam Bhagat Singh, Rajguru, Sukhdev, Kartar Singh Sarabha. In every village, you will find the ‘parvane’ who sacrificed their lives for India’s freedom,” he told reporters. “Visiting this ashram, I got to see many things like Gandhiji’s hand-written letters, and learnt about various other objects used in revolution. About charkha, I was saying that there is charkha in nearly every
household in Punjab. Ladies sing cultural songs while spinning yarn,” he further said. “Here, I saw the original charkha and how he promoted indigenous objects, which are today being promoted differently. We are nationalists who love the country. I have visited Gujarat for the first time after becoming a chief minister. I believe that the people of Gujarat are very ‘inqualibi’ (revolutionary), and I am hopeful they will make a big contribution in the progress of the country,” Mann said.
CBI to conduct forensic psychological assessment of 9 arrested in Birbhum killings RAMPURHAT, APR 2 (PTI): The CBI has decided to conduct forensic psychological assessment of the nine persons arrested in connection with the killings in Birbhum district of West Bengal, an officer said on Saturday. During the assessments, one psychologist will be present to note their body language as well as facial expressions, which will be treated as evidence, he said. “Forensic psychological assessment will be used while grilling the nine suspects. This is to ascertain whether these persons are telling the truth or lying,” the officer told PTI. “A psychologist will be
present and he will file his findings as a report, while will be produced as evidence in the court,” the officer added. The decision was taken after CBI found inconsistencies in their statements about the incident, another official said. The probe agency has interrogated the officer-in-
charge of the firefighters who were involved in the rescue operations at the 10 houses in Bogtui village which were set ablaze after the killing of local TMC leader Bhadu Sheikh, the officer said. The CBI has also decided to send samples of the eight people killed in the carnage for DNA tests.

The row started after Defence Minister Rajnath Singh inaugurated an 80-km-long strategically crucial road connecting the Lipulekh pass with Dharchula in Uttarakhand in May 2020. Nepal protested the inauguration of the road claiming that it passed through its territory and came out with the new map weeks later.

NEW DELHI, APR 2 (PTI): There was a general understanding that the boundary issue between India and Nepal needed to be addressed in a responsible manner through dialogue and its politicisation should be avoided, Foreign Secretary Harsh Vardhan Shringla said on Saturday. He made the comments at a media briefing following wide-ranging talks between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his visiting Nepalese counterpart Sher Bahadur Deuba. In his statement to the media, Deuba said the boundary issue was discussed and he urged Modi to resolve it through the establishment of a bilateral mechanism. Shringla said the issue was briefly discussed. “The issue was briefly discussed. AHMEDABAD, APR 2 (PTI): After the Aam Aadmi Party’s (AAP) thumping victory in Punjab Assembly elections and months before Gujarat goes to the polls, party leaders Arvind Kejriwal and Bhagwant Mann on Saturday visited Sabarmati Ashram here as part of their two-day visit to the city, and paid tributes to Mahatma Gandhi. Kejriwal, who is Delhi chief minister and AAP’s national convener, and Mann, who took oath as Punjab chief minister last month, together visited Hriday Kunj, a place inside the ashram premises, where Mahatma Gandhi used to live. Their visit to the state is being viewed as an attempt to prepare the groundwork for the party in the state, where Assembly polls are scheduled to be held by the end of this year. AAP registered a historic win in Punjab Assembly polls last month by bagging a threefourths majority with 92 seats. The two leaders are scheduled to hold a two-km roadshow in the city on Saturday. ussia invaded an independent country and for over a month, its “contract forces” have been killing civilian women and children while war planes, tanks and rocket launchers rained destruction on towns and cities and reducing them to rubble . Russia has reserved its right to destroy Ukraine because of Putin’s egoistical dream of being the great Russian ruler who is on his path to revive the great Russian empire comprising of former Soviet republics. Putin’s justification for invading Ukraine is especially absurd, with false claims of a threat from a much weaker neighbour, led by a democratically elected Jewish president but in the name of de-Nazification, and denying Ukraine’s right to exist as a sovereign nation. He has even threatened to exercise his right to use nuclear weapons if he deemed fit in defence of Russian existence. That threat seems to have put a brake on any effort by the west and NATO to intervene in response to desperate please from Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelenskyy. The truth is that no country in the world is a threat to Russia but just the reverse. The UN general assembly on March 2 overwhelmingly voted against Russia and condemned its invasion of Ukraine. India abstained from voting against Russia because of its special and historic relationship. India’s ‘historic relationship’ with Russia was revealed when China invaded India in 1962 and as Russia needed Chinese support because of the Cuban missile crisis, it was not supportive of India at a time of need. Former NSA and former foreign secretary Shivshankar Menon pointed out that Russia chose to be neutral in the 1965 war with Pakistan. India also abstained voting for Russia’s resolution in the UNGA on March 24. The Russian resolution made no reference to its invasion of Ukraine, but called upon all parties concerned to allow safe and unhindered passage to destinations outside of Ukraine, including to foreign nationals without discrimination, and facilitate safe and unhindered access of humanitarian assistance to those in need. India’s self justification of “neutrality” has caught the world’s attention as it neither condemned the Russian invasion nor voted for the counter-resolution by Russia for allowing exit of Ukrainian refugees out of the war-torn zones. India’s motto of “Satyameva Jayate” or Truth Alone Triumphs, appears to have been re-interpreted to mean that truth is ambiguity. India’s foreign policy stance in abstaining on UN resolutions and maintaining strategic neutrality is explainable given the reliance on Russian armaments and historical ties with Russia. Some in the media and government have justified India’s questionable ambiguity by recalling Ukraine’s own less than friendly foreign policy toward India and racist statements and actions by Ukrainian officials and border guards during the repatriation of Indians and Africans from Ukraine and also the US invasion of Iraq. However, one historical wrong cannot justify another, perhaps most important, the US never denied Iraq’s sovereignty or demonstrated any intentions throughout the prolonged conflict to occupy Iraq permanently or impose a puppet regime. Shivshankar Menon in an interview, said that while Russia might have concerns about NATO expansion to Ukraine, NATO nations like Poland, Austria, Slovakia and Czech Republic too have concerns about Russian occupation of Ukraine especially regions like Transnistria, Abkhazia and South Ossetia, not to mention many parts of Ukraine including Crimea which Russia illegally occupies. India needs hugely affordable Russian weapons and oil and these are the driving forces behind its “neutrality” and not the truth of what is right and wrong.

…the Lord Jesus…has sent me that you may receive your sight… —Acts 9:17
When Paul received his sight, he also received spiritual insight into the Person of Jesus Christ. His entire life and preaching from that point on were totally consumed with nothing but Jesus Christ— “For I determined not to know anything among you except Jesus Christ and Him crucified” (1 Corinthians 2:2). Paul never again allowed anything to attract and hold the attention of his mind and soul except the face of Jesus Christ. We must learn to maintain a strong degree of character in our lives, even to the level that has been revealed in our vision of Jesus Christ. The lasting characteristic of a spiritual man is the ability to understand correctly the meaning of the Lord Jesus Christ in his life, and the ability to explain the purposes of God to others. The overruling passion of his life is Jesus Christ. Whenever you see this quality in a person, you get the feeling that he is truly a man after God’s own heart (see Acts 13:22). Never allow anything to divert you from your insight into Jesus Christ. It is the true test of whether you are spiritual or not. To be unspiritual means that other things have a growing fascination for you. Since mine eyes have looked on Jesus, I’ve lost sight of all beside, So enchained my spirit’s vision, Gazing on the Crucified.

NAGALAND POST, DIMAPUR SUNDAY, APRIL 3, 2022
Post-mortem
What lies ahead for India’s soaring fuel prices? F uel prices were increased for the eighth time in the last nine days. Petrol costs around Rs 101.01/litre in Delhi, Rs 115.88/litre in Mumbai, Rs. 106.69/litre in Chennai, and Rs. 110.52/litre in Kolkata. Diesel is priced the highest in Mumbai at Rs. 100.10/litre for now, with other cities increasing prices, too. It has been known for some time now that prices of petrol and diesel vary across Indian states due to differential taxing, based on the rates of value-added tax (VAT) imposed by states combined with the higher central excise duty calculated on the retail price of fuel, which is levied by the Central government. So, what’s driving a sustained increase in crude oil prices across the globe along with the fuel price in India? There are multiple reasons, both external and internal. How the UkraineRussia war triggered panic-buying The current price hike has been catalysed by the rapidly escalating global economic tensions from the military aggression seen between Russia-Ukraine, adversely impacting global oil supplies (including exports-imports from Russia), while also affecting shipping routes. Adding to this is the direct and indirect impact of sanctions on Russia,
I
which is inhibiting its ability to complete its oil export contracts. Crude futures traded higher than $106 per barrel this Tuesday after a 7% decline in the previous session as investors were monitoring the situation in Ukraine and assessing the impact of COVID-19 curbs in China on global demand ahead of the OPEC+ meeting next Thursday. In the context of the Russia-Ukraine conflict, crude oil prices were expected to rise across the world even before the attack happened on Ukraine. This was because the world feared that the war would lead the West to ban Russian oil (which subsequently happened in phases). Even before countries like the US and the UK sanctioned to ban Russian oil and gas imports, some countries had halted their purchases, while others went into a ‘panic-buying’ mode. Short-term crude oil prices soared to a 14-year high of $140 a barrel on 7 March. They have come down since then, but only slightly. Ru s s i a , b e i n g t h e third-largest oil producer after the US and Saudi Arabia, supplies 14% of global production, or 7-8 million barrels per day of crude oil to markets worldwide. Many EU nations are still importing Russia’s oil and gas but prolonged sanctions
will only deepen the global fuel supply crisis, keeping prices more volatile in the short-to-medium term, when supplies remain tight. A case in point in South Asia is Sri Lanka’s recent economic crash, resulting from its inability to source fuel imports at an affordable cost due to a weak foreign currency reserve position and high inflation. India’s import-dependence is also to blame India is 85 per cent dependent on imports to meet its oil needs. Roughly, it consumes 7 million barrels of crude oil a day, with the bulk of imports coming from West Asia and the US. From Russia alone, India imports 2% of oil from its total import share. This may not sound a lot in volume, but when seen now from the volatility observed in global fuel prices and an overall restriction on oil imports from Russia, in aggregate, India’s high import bill for oil adversely affects its macroeconomic situation. There is a historical context here. India’s overall import dependence for oil has only increased over the last few decades. This has naturally led to a volatile effect on its domestic fueldiesel prices when there is a serious ‘volatile price shock’ in the international market. Subsequent govern-
ments have also tried to diversify the import basket of crude oil dependence by getting into arrangements with multiple oil-exporting nations, such as Iran and others. Still, it would be a mistake to put all the blame for the fuel price hike on external factors alone. The tug-of-war between Centre and States A large levy of domestic taxes on fuel, including the central excise duty (imposed by the Union Government) plus state taxes, have kept fuel prices higher even in times of relative calm in global oil markets. The excise duty levied by the Central government is 31% of the total retail price of fuel, while the dealer price is around 42%. It is critical to point out that the excise duty levied on petrol and diesel consists of two broad components: • Tax component (ie, basic excise duty), and • Cess and surcharge component. Of this, only the revenue generated from the tax component is devolved to states. Revenue generated by the Centre from any cess or surcharge is not devolved to states. Currently, the Agriculture Infrastructure and Development Cess and the Road and Infrastructure Cess are levied on the sale of petrol and diesel, in addition to the surcharge. In the last Union Bud-
India shouldn’t fall for Putin’s rupees-for-rubles deal
ndia wants to go on trading with Russia for reasons that are more practical than to swipe at the West. For one thing, New Delhi relies heavily on Moscow for defense procurement, a dependency that will be hard to shed overnight with new suppliers. For another, Russia is reportedly offering India a $35 discount per barrel on the pre-war price of flagship Urals grade oil. Cheap energy imports can help Prime Minister Narendra Modi put a lid on rising domestic discontent with high pump prices. The stance won’t exactly please the Americans. However, it’s no more opportunistic than Europe continuing to buy Russian gas more than a month into President Vladimir Putin’s invasion of Ukraine. India may still end up testing U.S. and European Union tolerance if it agrees to rupee-ruble trade using Russia’s communication channel SPFS to move funds. That direct challenge to Washington will not be in New Delhi’s own longer-term interests. SPFS is what Moscow has proposed to the Modi government, according to Bloomberg News, as a way to deliberately short-circuit SWIFT, the messaging system used by banks to move money across borders. SWIFT is a critical surveillance tool: Global banks can be slapped with hefty fines if transaction messages show the involvement of a sanctioned entity. Losing access to SWIFT would itself be a punishment because of the system’s ubiquity. Additionally, if it’s a dollar payment and the settlement occurs in New York — under an arrangement known as CHIPS — then the U.S. can inflict more serious damage, including putting offenders in jail. In the long run, Washington has to reimagine this policing power by supplementing — or even supplanting — the reigning trinity of SWIFT, CHIPS and the U.S. currency with something better and faster, such as a digital dollar designed for use by the entire world. Right now, though, President Joe Biden has to thwart attempts by geopolitical rivals to smash the
status quo before he has had a chance to define, and lead, the post-SWIFT era in global payments. If the world’s 11th largest economy succeeds in bending sanctions, then China, the second biggest, will surely be able to break them at will. It’s easy to see why Moscow may want India to bypass SWIFT. Access to the Brusselsbased network has been cut off for key Russian lenders, with the exception of Sberbank PJSC and Gazprombank, which the Europeans need to conduct energy trades. The question is, what does New Delhi get in return for this accommodation, besides cheap oil and military hardware like batteries for the S-400 air defense system? Nothing much, actually. If anything, it has much to lose. Deals like this are often short-lived. They lack the deep liquidity provided primarily by the dollar, a medium of exchange and store of value all counterparties freely accept — unless they happen to be in Russia, where even the central bank has lost access to much of its foreign reserves. Without liquidity, trade shrivels up. For instance, India bought oil from Iran under a U.S. sanctions waiver by depositing rupees in Indian banks. Tehran used these funds to buy food and medicine from India. However, once the waiver lapsed, India had to stop importing Iranian oil. The balances in the accounts dwindled, and now Indian firms won’t sell Tehran rice, sugar or tea because they may not get paid. At least the trade with Iran was entirely in rupees. SPFS is mainly a system for domestic Russian use. Since it’s being proposed in crossborder trade, we can assume that Moscow will provide messaging log-ins to a couple of Indian banks. They may open accounts with lenders in Russia, and the favor would be returned. Russian exporters will very likely get rupees paid into their banks’ accounts in India. Once transfer messages move on SPFS from New Delhi to Moscow, the Russian banks’ head offices will give these exporters, principally state-linked firms, rubles. Messages and claims will flow the Reader’s note: Articles or letters published in any
other way for Russian imports from India. The exchange rate will be important. Back when India conducted commerce with the Soviet Union along similar lines, an “extremely complex system of currency and commodity coefficients” used to be at play behind the scenes to determine how much a ruble was worth, according to a March 1990 paper by the Indian economist Pronab Sen. Soon, however, the USSR collapsed, India got embroiled in a balance-of-payment crisis, and suddenly both parties wanted what neither could print: dollars. Even if bureaucrats leave the exchange rate to markets this time, it’s unclear how financial claims arising from trade will eventually be balanced: India imported almost $9 billion worth of goods from Russia last year, but exported only a little more than $3 billion. At the national levels, the numbers involved may be peanuts; but they will be significant for the banks facilitating this trade. If the EU succumbs to Putin’s ultimatum to “unfriendly” states and lets its gas-buyers pay in rubles, using accounts at Russian banks, there will be nothing exceptional about India doing something similar. But to take the lead in adopting a brand-new institutional arrangement with Moscow makes little sense from a geopolitical perspective. The U.S. considers a democratic India to be its potential ally in its superpower rivalry with China. It’s not yet a deep relationship, and requires trustbuilding on both sides. It’s one thing for New Delhi to abstain from condemning Putin’s aggression at the United Nations, and quite another for it to abet his regime in avoiding sanctions. Agreeing to open a separate financial email channel with Moscow will make India look unreliable to far bigger economies whose markets it needs to move up from a low-middle-income status to high-middle. This transition is much more vital to its national interests than a $35 discount on oil or a favorable deal on weaponry. (As published in Bloomberg)
I
get, the Agriculture Infrastructure and Development cess on petrol and diesel was announced at Rs 2.5 per litre and Rs 4 per litre, respectively. Similarly, over the last four years, the share of the tax component in the excise duty has decreased by 40% in petrol and 59% in diesel. Currently, the majority of the excise duty levied on petrol (96%) and diesel (94%) is in the form of cess and surcharge, due to which it is entirely under the Centre’s share. Given this, states have no option but to impose a higher sales/VAT rate of their own on retail fuel prices. The result remains this: the average consumer suffers from a double-tax burden. This has been a major concern that a few of us have raised earlier. India had problems even before the war or COVID This scenario was evident in the pre-pandemic context or before the Russia-Ukraine war, which merits a closer look and policy correction, given how the dense fog of COVID-related reasons and war may overshadow the gravity of certain macroeconomic issues that have existed in India from a much longer time. It is difficult for India to find prompt, effective solutions for external events such as the Russia-Ukraine war. The most vital impact
of a higher fuel price base globally can be seen in the subsequent inflationary rise seen across goods within India’s consumer price index (weighted from food to all essential services consumed by Indian consumers). The most India can do for now is hope that the Centre and state governments will work together in restoring the broken ‘federal-state’ compact by reducing their tax-revenue dependence imposed on retail fuel prices, at least till global oil markets calm down. Else, there is a high probability of seeing a prolonged effect of the rise in fuel price, triggering an even higher inflationary spell for both consumers and producers. All this will wreak havoc on household budgets, whose spending capabilities shall continue to fall, negatively impacting aggregate demand and the gross production capacity. This would be enough to send an already low growth cycle of the Indian economy into a more prolonged ‘Keynesian tailspin’. Content marketing has less cost and more benefits
n this age of social media, content is called the king and there is no doubt about it. Today, OTT platforms and Youtube channels have left behind traditional cinema on the basis of rich content. Millions of people search the internet for new information every day and blogs fulfill this hunger for information to a great extent. That is why content marketing is gaining importance. Content marketing costs 62% less than traditional marketing, while getting three times more leads. Those who wish to popularize their brand should focus on content marketing. Content should be written in such a way that people like it and it is also of their use. Videos are being liked more than written posts. The videos are also watched by less educated people or those who do not understand the language. More than one billion hours of videos are watched on YouTube every day. At least short video clips should be posted by every blogger. Building your personal brand is also very important. People who have established themselves as a brand on social media become influencers, on which companies like to spend thousands of rupees. Top social media influencers get the same importance as a movie star. Corporate companies spend lavishly on Influencers to improve their reputation. In return their sales increase. According to the Influencer Marketing Factory, there are about 50 million online creators in the world. Children, teenagers and youth are present in large numbers in this segment. In the year 2021, the value of the creator market was more than Rs 7.44 lakh crores. This army
of creators has come into existence especially in the last ten years. Twitch started in the year 2021, when the foundation of the creator economy was laid. Platforms such as Fans Only, Twitch, Patreon and Substake offer creators the opportunity to earn from the subscription model, while also charging commissions ranging from 10 to 50% of their earnings. A question that is often asked is what is the right size for a video or a post? Many people think that by posting long videos or writing long posts, they will get more response, which is not true. People don’t want to see or read posts longer than 5-10 seconds. That is, this is an era of snackable content, so focus should be on making it a lunch or dinner type content, so that people can read even big posts with pleasure. One solution to this problem is that bloggers should bring to the fore untold and unheard stories. They should offer the content that the traditional media never pays attention to. The human mind is deeply engrossed in stories. People remember the story and forget the information. That is, a blogger should try to tell the things in the form of a story or by connecting it to a story. By doing this, the readers of that post or blog will increase and you will get thousands or millions of likes on such posts on social media. There are 1.8 billion websites worldwide, of which over 600 million are blogs. Blogs can be on any subject and in any language. A blogger is the writer, editor, photographer and storyteller – all rolled into one. Narvijay Yadav is a senior journalist & columnist. He tweets @ NarvijayYadav

According to the guidelines, a robust continuous formative and internal assessment is required to ensure competencies and thereby a competent medical graduate. “If required, we can have two internal assessments and the third internal assessment can be calculated from various unitary and continuous tests taken throughout the year,” it said.
Hindu activists have even offered 10 per cent concession on the purchase of meat of Rs 200 and above and free home delivery within eight kms of the outlet. The activists stood outside temples with posters and banners offering Ugadi prasad and appealing to them not to use any halal product especially during ‘Hosa Tadaku’. Meanwhile, Hindu Religious Institutions and Charitable Endowment Minister Shashikala Jolle said whatever the Hindu outfits are doing is right. “The issue of halal and non-halal is very much prevalent in coastal Karnataka if not in other parts of the state. I feel that whatever our pro-Hindu outfits are doing appears right. They are spreading awareness about the ‘jhatka cut’ of the animal because it has to be offered to God. I am in favour of these organisations,” Jolle told reporters.
GHAZIABAD, APR 2 (PTI): Selling of raw meat will not be allowed in the open during the ongoing Navratra, Ghaziabad Mayor Asha Sharma said on Saturday. The district magistrate clarified that licensed meat shops can run their business in covered kiosks during the nine-day-long festival. “During Navratra, selling of meat will not be allowed in the open (across Ghaziabad) while it is banned (completely) near temples and in the bylanes where temples are located. Shop owners can cover the meat which they are selling. We are not here to help anyone incur profit or loss,” Mayor Sharma told PTI. She said this norm is followed every year. The Chaitra Navratra began on Saturday and will continue till April 10.
BJP trying to ‘spread bitterness’ in society: Pawar PUNE, APR 2 (PTI): In a veiled attack on the BJP, NCP chief Sharad Pawar on Saturday alleged that attempts were being made to spread bitterness in the society, and therefore taking the country forward and maintaining harmony has become a challenge. Politics used to connect people in the past, but now efforts were being made in the country to divide them on the basis of religion, he said, adding that the the country’s leadership was trying to defame national icons like Mahatma Gandhi. Pawar was addressing a gathering at Sangli, around 230 kms from here, where he welcomed local leader Shivajirao Naik back into the NCP fold, after the latter quit the BJP. “Shivajirao was successful as the Zilla Pari-
shad president...I welcome him back to NCP. Let’s work together to use his expertise for the betterment of Maharashtra,” he said. “Satara, or for that matter, Maharashtra had leadership who worked for the development or to bring people together. But today, efforts are being made in the country to divide people on basis of religion,” Pawar said. Mahatma Gandhi, Maulana Abul Kalam Azad fought for the country’s freedom and worked to build it. But presently, the country’s leadership is trying to defame these people, the former Union minister alleged. The country is currently being led by a party, which has a different thought process. Politics previously connected people, but now at-

tempts are being made at the country to divide people on religious lines, he said. “Recently, in BJP-ruled Karnataka, a ‘fatwa’ was issued by some organisations, where people were asked not to buy anything from the shops run by members from a minority community. This type of bitterness is being spread by those elements who are in power in states. How will this country go ahead and how will we maintain harmony is a ques-
tion,” Pawar said. “Today, we want to fight against this bigotry. We have to do politics of development, of better future for workers and farmers. I am confident that (Maharashtra Chief Minister) Uddhav Thackeray, (Deputy CM) Ajit Pawar, (NCP minister) Jayant Patil and others will change this picture together,” he said. Meanwhile, he also said that along with the production of sugar, people should focus on producing ethanol. “We cannot just go for sugar production. We should opt for ethanol production. It is a good decision to have a distillery in some sugar factories...Production of ethanol will help us to save money and farmers and distillers will be able to earn through it.”
Prabhakar Sail
MUMBAI, APR 2 (AGENCIES): Prabhakar Sail, an independent witness in the Mumbai cruise drug case of 2021 suffered a heart attack and died in his rented apartment in Mahul area on Friday afternoon, reports India Today. Advocate Tushar Khandare, who was representing him, confirmed the death while stating that Sail was at home and the family did not suspect foul play behind his death. Sail is survived by his mother, wife and two children and the family had decided to wait for his brothers to arrive from the village before the cremation would take place. Sail was the personal security guard of another witness, KP Gosawi, in the drug cruise case in which the son of Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan, Aryan Khan, was the first one to be arrested. However, Gosawi had posted a picture of himself with Aryan and was even seen pulling his
hand and taking him to the NCB office. Soon after Maharashtra cabinet minister Nawab Malik raised the issue of a private individual like Gosawi being made a witness in the case and asked what was Gosawi doing dragging Aryan into the NCB office. After Gosawi’s role became suspect and he was arrested by Pune police in a case pending before them, Sail filed an affidavit. Sail, also an independent witness of the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB), made headlines after he claimed to have overheard a conversation about an alleged pay-off involving NCB zonal director Sameer Wankhede and Gosawi. The NCB SIT in one of its documents stated that they needed to record a statement of Gosawi, who is in jail. The document stated that another witness, i.e. Prabhakar Sail has turned hostile. Thus, in such a situation, “examination of KP Gosawi becomes necessary and pivotal to unearth the true and correct facts of this case”, the document read. Although another witness in the case, Sam D’souza, too levelled allegations against Gosawi and Sail, stating they had taken money. However, the allegations levelled by each one is still under probe when Sail has passed away.

Similarly, a case was registered in old town police station where some people went to Janata Hotel and told the owner not to sell halal meat. When a customer questioned, he was assaulted, the officer said. “In both the cases, the same accused have been named. A case has been registered against them and they have been arrested. They are Vadivelu, Srikanth, Krishna, Sawai Singh and Gunda,” Prasad said. In Bengaluru, the Chief Minister said he has
given directions to the district authorities. “I have asked all the deputy commissioners and superintendents of police of all the districts that people have to celebrate their festivals without disturbing the law and order. Directions given should be followed strictly,” Bommai told reporters. He also said peace meetings have been convened with all the people concerned where they were told to ensure peaceful celebration of the festival. Intensifying their drive, Hindu outfits on Saturday too got down on the streets appealing to the Hindus to use only ‘jhatka meat’, which means killing any animal by stunning it so that the sacrificed animal does not undergo the much sufferings. The campaigners have tied up with Hindu meat vendors and have put up signboards of ‘100% jhatka certified’ on the outlets.

India, Australia ink trade pact THOUSANDS OF INDIAN GOODS TO GET DUTY-FREE ACCESS
NEW DELHI, APR 2 (PTI): India and Australia on Saturday signed an economic cooperation and trade agreement under which Canberra would provide duty-free access in its market for over 6,000 broad sectors of India, including textiles, leather, furniture, jewellery and machinery. The agreement is likely to be implemented in about four months. The India-Australia Economic Cooperation and Trade Agreement (IndAus ECTA) was inked by Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal and Australian Minister for Trade, Tourism and Investment Dan Tehan in a virtual ceremony, in the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Australian counterpart Scott Morrison. Goyal said the agreement would help in taking bilateral trade from USD 27.5 billion at present to USD 45-50 billion in the next five years. He further
Prime Minister Narendra Modi during the virtual signing ceremony of IndiaAustralia Economic Cooperation and Trade Agreement. (PTI) said the pact will contribute towards large employment generation, which is estimated at around 10 lakh over the next 5-7 years as the labour-intensive sectors are likely to gain the most. Under the pact, Australia is offering zero duty access to India for about 96.4 per cent of exports (by value) from day one. This covers many products which currently attract 4-5 per cent customs duty in Australia. Labour-intensive sectors which would gain immensely include textiles and apparel, few agricultural and fish products, leather,
footwear, furniture, sports goods, jewellery, machinery, electrical goods and railway wagons. On the very first day of the implementation of the pact, over 6,000 tariff lines would be available for Indian exporters at zero duty. Australia trades in about 6,500 tariff lines, while India has over 11,500 tariff lines. Since Australian exports are more concentrated in raw materials and intermediates, many industries in India will get cheaper raw materials which will make them competitive, in
particular sectors like steel, aluminium and fabric/ garments. To safeguard sensitive sectors, India has several goods in the exclusion category in which no duty concessions will be accorded to Australian imports. Such goods will include milk and other dairy products, toys, sunflowers, seed oil, walnuts, pistachio nuts, platinum, wheat, rice, bajra, apple, sugar, oil cake, gold, silver, chickpeas, jewellery, iron ore and most medical devices. The agreement will also have a safeguard mechanism that includes stricter
rules of origin to prevent any routing of products from a third country; safeguard mechanism to deal with any unusual surge in imports; and similar norms for the steel sector. For the pharma segment, the pact would provide fast-track approvals and fast-track quality assessment/inspections of manufacturing facilities. In the services sector, benefits for India include post study work visa of 2-4 years for Indian students on reciprocal basis; and work and holiday visa arrangement for young professionals, Goyal said. “Post study work visas will provide extended options for working in Australia to eligible Indian graduates, post graduates and STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) specialists,” he said, adding that currently, there are more than 1 lakh Indian students enrolled in various courses in Australia.

40,000 MT diesel from India reaches SL A consignment of 40,000 metric tonnes of diesel from India reached Sri Lanka on Saturday, the fourth such assistance from New Delhi, to mitigate the spike in power cuts in the island nation, which is facing an unprecedented economic and energy crisis caused due to shortage of foreign exchange. Power cuts lasting over 13 hours were imposed on Thursday, the longest cut since 1996 when a strike by the state power entity employees caused a 72-hour black out.
Officials of the state fuel entity, Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB), said the Indian diesel supplies would ease the ongoing power cuts. The power cuts effective Saturday are over 8.5 hours. “More fuel supplies delivered by #India to #SriLanka! China to back military-ruled Myanmar regardless of situation BEIJING, APR 2 (AP): China says it will back neighbour Myanmar “no matter how the situation changes”, in the latest show of unequivocal support for the ruling military that seized power last year. China “has always placed Myanmar in an important position in its neighborly diplomacy” and wants to “deepen exchanges and cooperation,” Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi told his Myanmar counterpart Wunna Maung Lwin on Friday, according to China’s official Xinhua News Agency. Myanmar’s military, which ousted the civilian government
of Aung San Suu Kyi in February 2021, has continued to face popular resistance that amounts to what some UN experts have characterised as a civil war. The government is also facing genocide accusations at the International Court of Justice in The Hague. In return for Chinese diplomatic support and material assistance, Myanmar has been a loyal ally of Beijing within a 10-member regional bloc, the Association of Southeast Asian Nations. The sides should accelerate work on the China-Myanmar Economic Corridor, step up construction of “major landmark projects”
and “deepen solidarity in the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic”, Wang said. “No matter how the situation changes, China will support Myanmar in safeguarding its sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity, and in exploring a development path suited to its national conditions,” Wang said. Myanmar’s military leader has not been allowed to participate in ASEAN meetings following the army’s seizure of power and violent suppression of of opposition to its rule. KYIV, APR 2 (AP): Retreating Russian troops have been creating a “catastrophic” situation for civilians by leaving mines around homes, abandoned equipment and “even the bodies of those killed”, as they pull back from Ukraine’s capital region, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy warned on Saturday. Ukraine and its Western allies reported mounting evidence of Russia withdrawing its forces from around Kyiv and building up troop strength in eastern region of the war-torn country. Ukrainian fighters reclaimed several areas near the capital after forcing the Russians out or moving in after them, officials said. The visible shift did not mean the country faced a reprieve from more than five weeks of war or that the more than four million refugees who have fled Ukraine will return soon. Zelenskyy said he expected departed towns to receive airstrikes and shelling from afar and for the battle in the east to be intense. “It’s still not possible to return to normal life, as it used to be, even at the territories that we are taking back after the fighting,” the president told his nation in a nightly video message. “We need wait until our land is demined, wait till we are able to assure you that there won’t be new shelling.” Moscow’s focus on eastern Ukraine also kept the besieged southern city of Mariupol in the crosshairs. The port city on the Sea of Azoz is located in the mostly Russian-speaking Donbas region, where Russia-backed separatists have fought Ukrainian troops for eight years and military analysts think Russian President Vladimir Putin is seeking
its own narrow interests, with little or no consideration for a country’s human rights record or other internal controversies. China has refused to criticise Russia over its invasion of Ukraine while blaming the West for provoking the conflict. And on Thursday, Chinese leader Xi Jinping issued strong backing for Afghanistan while making no mention of human rights abuses by the country’s Taliban leaders, even as much of the world fumed over the hardline Islamic group reneging on a promise a day earlier to open schools to girls beyond the sixth grade.
ISLAMABAD, APR 2 (PTI): Pakistan’s embattled Prime Minister Imran Khan, who has promised to bowl an inswing yorker against Opposition leaders for tabling a no-confidence motion against him, is now facing the prospect of being run out in the number game in Parliament on Sunday with key allies deserting him and a sizeable number of rebel lawmakers vowing to vote against him. Khan, who came to power in 2018 with promises to create a ‘Naya Pakistan’, is at a critical juncture of his political career as he has lost majority after defection from his Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party. Two of his allied parties also withdrew their support and joined the ranks of the rejuvenated Opposition. The 69-year-old cricketer-turned politician is facing the no-confidence motion, which was tabled by the Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly Shehbaz Sharif on March 28. The National Assembly is scheduled to vote on the no-trust motion on Sunday. Khan needs 172 votes in the lower house of 342 to foil the Opposition’s bid to topple him. However, the Opposition claims it has the support of 175 lawmakers and the prime minister should immediately resign. A defiant Khan has said that he will not resign despite losing the majority and insisted that he will “fight till the last ball” and face the vote of noconfidence in the National Assembly on Sunday. Khan has described the rebel lawmakers as “traitors” and said that they will be branded as such for the rest of their lives as he

to expand control after his forces failed to secure Kyiv and other major cities. The International Committee of the Red Cross planned to try Saturday to get emergency supplies into Mariupol and to evacuate residents. The Red Cross said it was unable to carry out the operation on Friday because it did not receive assurances the route was safe. City authorities said the Russians blocked access to the city. Mariupol, which was surrounded by Russian forces a month ago, has been the scene of some of the war’s worst attacks, including on a maternity hospital and a theatre sheltering civilians. Around 100,000 people are believed to remain in the city, down from a prewar population of 430,000, and facing dire shortages of water, food, fuel and medicine. The city’s capture would give Moscow an unbroken land bridge from Russia to Crimea, which it seized from Ukraine in 2014, but also has taken on symbolic significance during Russia’s invasion, said Volodymyr Fesenko, head of the Ukrainian think-tank Penta. “Mariupol has become a symbol of Ukrainian resistance, and without its conquest, Putin cannot sit down at the negotiating
table,” Fesenko said. The Mariupol city council on Saturday said 10 empty buses were headed to Berdyansk, a city 84 kilometres west of Mariupol, to pick up people who can get there on their own. Some 2,000 made it out of Mariupol on Friday, some on buses and some in their own vehicles, city officials said. Oleksiy Arestovych, an adviser to Zelenskyy, in an interview with Russian lawyer and activist Mark Feygin said that Russia and Ukraine had reached an agreement to allow 45 buses to drive to Mariupol to evacuate residents “in coming days”. Such agreements have been reached before, only to be breached. On Thursday, Russian forces blocked a 45-bus convoy attempting to evacuate people from Mariupol and seized 14 tons of food and medical supplies bound for the city, Ukrainian authorities said. Zelenskyy said he discussed the humanitarian disaster in Mariupol with French President Emmanuel Macron on telephone and with the president of the European Parliament, Roberta Metsola, during her visit to Kyiv on Friday. “Europe doesn’t have the right to be silent about what is happening in our Mariupol,” Zelenskyy said.

Ahead of no-trust vote, Pak army chief flays Ukraine war, cosies up to West
Russian invasion of Ukraine is a “huge tragedy” and “must be stopped immediately”, said Pakistan Army chief General Qamar Javed Bajwa Saturday, in a major statement ahead of the no-confidence vote against Prime Minister Imran Khan Sunday. Condemning the war, Bajwa said, “Pakistan has consistently called for an immediate ceasefire and cessation of hostilities. We support immediate dialogue between all sides to find a lasting solution to the conflict.” He also called for all disputes with India, including Kashmir to be settled through dialogue.
Bajwa referred to Pakistan’s “long and excellent strategic relationship with the US”, and how the UK and the EU were vital to the country’s interests. This was in stark contrast to statements by PM Khan, whose rhetoric has become increasingly anti-US and anti-EU. The contrasting stances of the army chief and the prime minister come in the backdrop of a reported rift between Khan and the military establishment, which had backed his rise to power. The army has maintained an avowedly neutral stance on the no-confidence motion.

pleaded with them to come back and foil the Opposition’s attempt to topple his government. No Pakistani prime minister has ever completed a full five-year term in office. Also, no prime minister in Pakistan’s history has ever been ousted through a no-confidence
motion, and Khan is the third premier to face the challenge. Since coming to power in 2018, Khan has miserably failed to address the basic problem of keeping the prices of commodities in control, allowing the Opposition to target his government as inefficient. O n Fr i d ay, K h a n claimed he has credible information that his life is in danger but asserted that he is not afraid and will continue his fight for an independent and democratic Pakistan. Khan’s security has been beefed up as per the government’s decision after he claimed that his life is in danger.

COLOMBO, APR 2 (PTI): The Sri Lankan government on Saturday imposed a 36hour curfew as a nationwide public emergency has been enforced ahead of a planned anti-government rally over the worst economic crisis in the island nation that has hit the common man badly. The island wide curfew has been imposed with effect from 6 pm Saturday to 6 am Monday (April 4), the information department said. President Gotabaya Rajapaksa has given the directive under the Public Security Ordinance regulations, it said. The move came as the island nation braced for country-wide protests on Sunday against the government’s poor handling of the ongoing economic crisis where people currently endure long hours of power outages and scarcity of essentials. The imposition of curfew would prevent citi-
ordered bail to a section of the protesters arrested for the demonstration opposite Rajapaksa’s private residence on Thursday. Lawyer Nuwan Bopage, who was among around 500 lawyers gathered at the Colombo suburban Gangodawila magistrate’s court to give free counsel, said that out of the 54 arrested, as many as 21 were given bail. NZ beat Netherlands by 118 runs Fed Cup athletics: Kartik, Sanjivani win gold
Take a 2-0 lead in the 3-match ODI series
H A M I LTO N, A P R 2 (IANS): Captain Tom Latham’s scintillating career-best knock of 140 not out helped New Zealand thump Netherlands by 118 runs to take an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match ODI series at Seddon Park on Saturday. Latham, also the birthday boy entering his 30s, took charge of New Zealand after they collapsed from 22/0 in four overs to 32/5 in 9.4 overs. He thwarted the hopes of Netherlands, looking for a chance to make a huge upset, with a single-handed match-winning effort to post a formidable total of 264/9 in 50 overs. In reply, the bowlers, led by Michael Bracewell’s 3/21, skittled Netherlands for 146 all out in 34.1 overs. The victory meant New Zealand jumped to eighth place from 11 with 50 points in the ICC Cricket World Cup Super League table, leapfrog-

ging Pakistan, while the Netherlands remained at the bottom of the 13-team table, with 25 points after nine matches. Pushed into batting first, Latham came in when the scoreboard was 30/3 and soon that became 32/5 as Logan van Beek and Fred Klaassen ran through the top and middle-order. Latham added 57 runs with Colin de Grandhomme (16) before the all-rounder was dismissed by opposi-
tion captain Pieter Seelaar. Latham and Doug Bracewell (41) then added 90 for the eighth wicket, bring stability to the innings. In the fag end, Latham exploded after taking his time to reach a century. He farmed the strike well to end up being unconquered at 140 off 123 balls, laced with ten fours and five sixes at a strike rate of 113.82. I n r e p ly, N e t h e r lands were 4/2 within the
first two overs as Doug Bracewell and Kyle Jamieson saw off openers Stephan Myburgh and Max O’Dowd. From there onwards, it was always going to be an uphill battle for the Dutch. There was a fighting second-wicket partnership between Vikramjit Singh (31) and Bas de Leede (37) as the duo put on a 77-run stand for the third wicket. But once they were dismissed, New Zealand bowlers didn’t take much time to dismiss them for 146 in 34.1 overs, with Michael Bracewell returning figures of 3/21. Deservingly, Latham took the Player-of-theMatch award for playing an astonishing masterclass in a captain’s knock, saving New Zealand from a troubled position. BRIEF SCORES: New Zealand 264/9 in 50 overs (Tom Latham 140 not out, Doug Bracewell 41; Logan van Beek 4/56, Fred Klaassen 3/36) beat Netherlands 146 all out in 34.1 overs (Bas de Leede 37, Vikramjit Singh 31; Michael Bracewell 3/21, Ish Sodhi 2/17) by 118 runs
KOZHIKODE, APR 2 (PTI): Long distance runners Kartik Kumar and Sanjivani Jadhav as well as pole vaulter Rosy Meena Paul produced personal best efforts to claim gold medals on an action-packed opening day of the Federation Cup Senior Athletics Championships here on Saturday. In the other events of the day, Aishwarya Mishra ran an impressive race to clock a personal best time of 52.41 seconds en route to women’s 400m final, while national record holder long jumper M Sreeshankar crossed 8m mark yet again. Aishwar ya of Maharashtra shaved 2.19 seconds off her previous best time of 54.60 to win her heat race and qualify as the top-ranked athlete for the final. However, the much-anticipated 100m clash between Dutee Chand and Hima Das will not happen as the latter pulled out of the heat races over the distance to concentrate on World Championships qualification in 200m. Hima had entered her name for the 100m as well as 200m races. But, Saturday’s 100m start list did not have the Assamese runner’s name in it. National record holder Dutee qualified for 100m final, winning heat number one in a time of 11.51. She did not enter her name in 200m. “There is no issue with Hima Das. She did not run in 100m heats today because she wanted to concentrate on World Championships qualification in 200m. She will run in 200m,” Indian athletics chief coach Radhakrishnan Nair told PTI.
Sanjivani Jadhav
Hima has a personal best time of 22.88 seconds in 200m which she ran in 2021 while the qualification time for World Championships in Eugene, USA, is 22.80 seconds. She will have to break Saraswati Saha’s 22.82 second national record if she has to qualify for the World Championships. In the 10000m race final, Kumar, a bronze medallist at the Asian Junior Championships in 2018, established himself as one of India’s brightest long distance runners with a maiden Federation Cup 10000m gold medal by clocking 29:20.21s. The Services runner produced the fastest time by an Indian in AFI competitions since Murli Kumar Gavit’s 28:38.34 in the 2019 Asian Championships in Doha. The 22-year-old positioned himself in the lead bunch through the race, pulling away with four laps to go and building a sufficient lead to hold back a late sprint by Sawan Barwal (Himachal Pradesh). In the women’s 10000m, Sanjivani Jadhav pulled away from Seema (Himachal Pradesh) after 10 laps to get a personal best time of 33:13.07. The 25-year-old finished 1 minute 3 seconds off the 32:10.18 set by the
AFI as the Asian Games qualifying mark. Rosy Meena of Tamil Nadu became only the fifth Indian woman pole vaulter to clear 4.00m to win gold from her team-mate Baranica Elangovan by 10cm. Haryana’s Pooja cleared 3.80m to take the bronze. Aishwarya’s 400m heat time on Saturday earned her place among the top 10 Indian women quartermilers in the past decade and is the second fastest this year behind the 52.37 that Priya Mohan clocked in the Indian Grand Prix 1 in Thiruvananthapuram last month. The experienced MR Poovamma held her own as she won her heat race with a measure of comfort, clocking 53.83 seconds. Amoj Jacob (Delhi), Muhammed Ajmal (Kerala) and two Tamil Nadu athletes Rajesh Ramesh and T Santhosh Kumar produced sub47-second times, while Noah Nirmal Tom (Kerala) came home in 47.00 in the 400m semifinals to raise expectations of a keen contest for the men’s quarter-mile medals. The seasoned Arokia Rajiv missed out on a place in the final. Sreeshankar (Kerala) laid down the gauntlet in the men’s long jump qualifying round with a leap of 8.09m. Jeswin Aldrin, jumping with a 2.4mps wind assisting him, hit sand at 7.94m to raise expectations of a thrilling final on Sunday afternoon. The morning session was marked by Tamil Nadu’s A Vignesh and G Kathiravan leaving the established sprinter Gurindervir Singh in third place in the 100m heats.

WASHINGTON, APR 2 (AGENCIES): After more than 40 years of sour relations and months of struggle to restore a nuclear deal, the United States and Iran are now set to meet on the soccer field at this year’s World Cup, having landed together in Group B in Friday’s draw. The Iran and U.S. coaches sidestepped the political fracas, saying they were focused on the tournament and its ability to bring people together. England and the winners of a European playoff – Ukraine, Scotland or Wales – complete the group. The icy U.S.-Iran relationship, characterized by diplomatic and even military confrontation in past years, has the poten-
Competition schedule for Paris Olympics released PARIS, APR 2 (IANS): The International Olympic Committee’s (IOC) executive board has approved the competition schedule of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. There will be 32 sports contested across 19 days of competition from July 24, two days before the opening ceremony, to August 11, with 329 medal events and 762 sessions. The first gold medal will be presented on July 27, the day after the opening ceremony, with cycling, judo, fencing, diving, rugby, shooting, swimming, and skateboarding medals all set to be awarded. All swimming and athletic finals will be held in the evening. The first swimming gold medal will be awarded on July 27, and the first athletic gold on August 2. tial to thaw somewhat by the time they play in Qatar on Nov. 21. It could also get worse. President Joe Biden’s administration is trying to restore a 2015 nuclear deal between Iran and world powers, which would curb Tehran’s nuclear program in exchange for lifting sanctions that have hammered Iran’s economy. Washington has accused Iran and the forces it backs of carrying out attacks across the Middle East, including against U.S. forces based in Iraq and Syria. In 2020, the two countries were on the brink of war after the U.S. killed a top Iranian general and Tehran responded with retaliatory missile strikes
at U.S. forces based in Iraq. Despite the serious nature of the U.S.-Iran rivalry, Washington’s diplomatic Twitter sphere erupted with jokes after the World Cup draw held at the Doha Exhibition and Convention Center in Qatar on Friday. A l i Va e z , C r i s i s Group’s Iran Project Director, joked that the U.S. government had set up a group to see what would happen in case of a drawn match. “A U.S. interagency working group has been set up in advance of the Iran game to determine if their offense can be deterred, the scope of follow-on negotiations in the event of a draw, and whether exchanging jerseys violates sanctions,” Vaez wrote.
CHENNAI, APR 2 (IANS): India is expected to have a larger say in the International Chess Federation, commonly known as FIDE, if the incumbent management led by former Russian Deputy Prime Minister Arkady Dvorkovich wins the polls, chess officials said. The elections for FIDE Congress will be held in August this year on the sidelines of the 44th Chess Olympiad to be held at Mahabalipuram near here in July-August. It is learnt that the officials of the chess administration in the national federation normally get a relatively higher number of posts in FIDE. This time around, the All India Chess Federation (AICF) is on a stronger wicket to claim a better representation in FIDE. It was AICF that came to the rescue of FIDE to hold the Olympiad after the latter decided to shift it out of Moscow following Russia’s military operation in Ukraine. Given the geopolitical situation, Dvorkovich’s nationality and his past position in the Russian government, he and his team would prefer a neutral venue for holding the FIDE Congress. And Mahabalipuram near Chennai is an ideal location. On Friday, fivetime world chess champion

Viswanathan Anand had said: “I have agreed to support Arkady Dvorkovich. We have discussed this, but we haven’t decided yet as to in what role or capacity I will be involved. The team led by Dvorkovich has done a lot for the sport.” “We have discussed that Anand will be a huge part of our team,” Dvorkovich said. Interestingly, Anand was appointed as Asia’s Continental Assistant to FIDE President by Dvorkovich in 2019. A senior FIDE official told IANS: “The role to be allocated to Anand will be decided after the elections.” Queried about AICF asking for a couple of critical posts for its nominees to contest, a senior FIDE official, not wanting to be named, told IANS: “I would assume you are right.” “At the FIDE elections, the Olympiad hosting nation normally gets some additional posts,” a former senior AICF official told IANS preferring anonymity. While some of the existing Indian officials will exit FIDE, more Indians are likely to enter the international chess body.
DURBAN, APR 2 (AGENCIES): Mahmudul Hasan Joy defied South Africa’s bowlers for more than seven hours and kept Bangladesh in touch with the hosts on the third day of the first Test at Kingsmead on Saturday. Mahmudul became the first Bangladesh batsman to score a Test century against South Africa as he made 137 in a total of 298. South Africa stretched their first innings lead of 69 by six runs without losing a wicket before bad light stopped play. Opening batsman Mahmudul, 21, was unruffled in only his third Test match as he calmly picked the right balls to score from. It took him six hours and 269 balls to reach his hundred and he continued to bat patiently until the eighth wicket fell. Then he unleashed a flurry of strokes, hitting offspinner Simon Harmer for a six and a four and a single in one over, then striking four fours in the next over from Wiaan Mulder. He was last man out, caught at slip off fast bowler Lizaad Williams after an innings lasting 443 minutes. He faced 326 balls and hit 14 fours and two sixes. Mahmudul shared useful parnerships of 82 with Liton Das (41), 33 with Yasir Ali (22) and 51 with Mehidy Hasan (29) as Bangladesh
kept South Africa in the field for most of the day. It did not seem likely to be a long day for South Africa when nightwatchman Taskin Ahmed was caught at gully off Williams with only three runs added to the overnight total of 98 for four. But mainly due to Mahmudul another 197 runs were added, leaving minimal time for South Africa to build on their lead before play was brought to an early finish. Off-spinner Simon

FIH Pro League: India beat England 3-2 in IPL 2022: Ferguson stars as Titans down DC marathon shoot-out to climb to top of table
PUNE, APR 2 (PTI): New Zealand fast bowler Lockie Ferguson scalped four wickets for 28 runs in a stunning display of pace and accuracy after Shubman Gill’s imperious 84 to help Gujarat Titans beat Delhi Capitals by 14 runs and register their second consecutive win in their maiden IPL season here on Saturday. Ferguson, who was bought for a whopping Rs 10 crore in the IPL auction, dismissed dangerous opener Prithvi Shaw (10), Mandeep Singh (18), captain Rishabh Pant (43 off 29 balls) and Axar Patel (8) to rock the DC’s run chase of 172. Veteran pacer Mohammed Shami (2/30) chipped in with two late wickets to hand DC, who finished on 157 for nine, their first defeat in the tournament. Titans captain Hardik Pandya got his first wicket as he dismissed DC opener Tim Seifert (3) while Rashid Khan (1/30) also chipped in with the scalp of Shardul Thakur. It was not the best of starts for DC as they lost opener Seifert in the second over. Ferguson then rocked DC’s innings with two wickets in the fifth over -- Shaw and Mandeep -- as

the Titans found themselves in the ascendency. But DC captain Pant and Lalit Yadav (25), who had played a major role in DC’s win in their previous match, revived the chase with a 61-run stand off 6.5 overs for the fourth wicket. Lalit was run out in a dramatic fashion in the 12th over. Off a throw by Abhinav Manohar at the bowler’s end, one bail had gone off early due to Vijay Shankar’s foot being in contact with the stumps. Shankar dislodged the other bail off as Lalit dived at full stretch. Pant had a
discussion with the umpires, but Lalit had to trudge off. Once Pant was out after a belligerent innings, it was becoming increasingly difficult for DC to chase down the target. They needed 46 runs from the final five overs with only four wickets remaining. Thakur was out in the 16th over and then Shami removed Rovman Powell (20) and Khaleel Ahmed (0) in a two-wicket burst in the 18th over to virtually end DC’s hope. Earlier, Gill struck an imperious 84 off just 46 balls -- his highest T20 score, to
power the Titans to 171 for six after being asked to bat. Gill, who struck six boundaries and four sixes during his stunning innings, and captain Pandya (31) revived the Titans innings with a 65-run partnership for the third wicket after they lost Matthew Wade (1) and Shankar (13) cheaply. Wade was out in the third ball of the innings off Mustafizur Rahman (3/23) while Kuldeep Yadav (1/32) bamboozled Shankar, who went for a slog-sweep only to see his stumps cart-wheeling. Gill was in imperious form during his knock as he made amends of his cheap dismissal -- zero runs -- in the previous match. He hoisted Axar Patel for a six early on and then smashed the same bowler for another maximum in the 16th over. His best shot was the straight six off Kuldeep in the 15th over. He was finally out in the 18th over off Ahmed (2/34) with Patel taking an easy catch at deep mid-wicket. Gill and Hardik denied the DC bowlers any success for 7.5 overs, while adding 65 runs during that crucial period after the Titans were 44 for two in the seventh
over. Hardik took time to settle down but just when he was getting into his grooves, he got out, hitting straight to Powell at long-on off the bowling of Ahmed. The Titans captain struck four boundaries during his 27ball knock.
RR beat MI by 23 runs Jos Buttler’s manic mayhem was matched in equal measure by spin twins Ravichandran Ashwin and Yuzvendra Chahal as Rajasthan Royals beat Mumbai Indians by 23 runs in an IPL match on Saturday. Buttler (100 off 68 balls) scored his second IPL ton off only 66 balls to help the Royals to 193 for 8, which seemed slightly subpar due to Jasprit Bumrah’s (3/17 in 4 overs) brilliant effort. Ishan Kishan (54 off 43 balls) and unheralded N Tilak Verma (61 off 33 balls) added 81 in 8 overs before Ashwin (1/30 in 4 overs) and Chahal (2/26 in 4 overs) decisively tilted the game in RR’s favour between overs 14 to 16 as MI managed only 170 for 8 after 20 overs. While Royals have now won two out of two, MI have lost both their games in another dismal start to an IPL season.
India snatched a win in the shootouts in the first of the two games against England.
BHUBANESWAR, APR 2 (PTI): The Indian men’s hockey team beat England in a dramatic shoot-out after both the sides were locked 3-3 in the regulation time in the opening match of the double-leg FIH Pro League tie at the Kalinga Stadium here on Saturday. In the shoot-out, the hosts won 3-2 to pocket two points (including a bonus) as against England’s one. Abhishek (14th minute), Shamsher Singh (27th) and Harmanpreet Singh (52nd) were the goal scorers for India in the regulation time, while England sounded the board through Nicholas Bandurak (8th, 28th) and Sam Ward (60th), who scored from a penalty
stroke. Both the teams will lock horns against each other again in the second match of the tie on Sunday. England started the match on a positive note by taking the lead in the eighth minute from a penalty corner conversion by Bandurak. Even though they were not up to their best, India drew level six minutes later through Abhishek, who scored with a fierce reverse hit after receiving a pass from Shamsher. India took the lead in the 27th minute through Shamsher’s field strike. But India’s joy was shotlived as England drew level a minute later, once again through a penalty corner conversion by Bandurak. It was a scrappy first
half from both the teams, more so from the Indians as they failed to secure a single penalty corner as against England’s three. England continued to play positively after the change of ends and secured a penalty corner soon but veteran India custodian PR Sreejesh made a fine save keep the scores level. The Indians, however, stepped up in the final quarter and got back-to-back penalty corners just eight minutes from the final whistle, the second of which was converted by Harmanpreet with a stunning drag-flick to take a 3-2 lead. But there was more drama in store as the fragile Indian defence conceded a penalty stroke just 14 seconds from the final hooter and Ward was bang on target to level the scores once again and take the match into shoot-out. It was a marathon shoot-out as both the teams faltered, but eventually the Indians held their nerves to come out on top and pocket two points from the game. By virtue of the win, India climbed to the top of the Pro League standings with 18 points from nine games.

Casper Ruud
MIAMI, APR 2 (AGENCIES): Carlos Alcaraz is one win away from creating Miami Open history after defeating defending champion Hubert Hurkacz in straight sets to book a final date on Sunday with Norway’s Casper Ruud. The 18-year-old Spanish sensation brought the crowd at Hard Rock Stadium to their feet for the second night in succession following his dramatic quarter-final win over Miomir Kecmanovic on Thursday night as he saw off 10thranked Hurkacz of Poland
Carlos Alcaraz
7-6 (7/5), 7-6 (7/2) to reach his first ATP Masters final. If he triumphs this weekend, Alcaraz, who made the last four in Indian Wells earlier this month, will become the youngest champion in the tournament’s 37-year history. Only two men have won titles at this level at a younger age — Michael Chang (1990, Toronto) and Rafael Nadal (2005, Monte Carlo) were both 18 on their first triumphs. Alcaraz turns 19 next month. Hurkacz, who has the
doubles final on Saturday to help soften the blow of this painful defeat, fought until the end, but the quality of Alcaraz’s groundstrokes and movement was ultimately the difference. Hurkacz served superbly to force a second set tie-break as the slow conditions suited both players but especially Alcaraz, who learned his trade on Spanish clay courts like his world famous compatriot and boyhood idol, Nadal. On this evidence, Ruud will have his work cut out to stop the dynamic world number 16 in his tracks. World number eight Ruud, meanwhile, is the first Norwegian to reach an ATP Masters 1000 final and surely one of the only top men’s tennis players to have an Instagram account devoted solely to his golfing skills. Ruud’s clash with the 2021 ATP Next Gen champion will be the biggest match of his career.
Daniil Medvedev
M O S C O W, A P R 2 (AGENCIES): Russia’s Daniil Medvedev will be out of action for one or two months as he goes under the knife to fix a hernia problem, the world number two said on Saturday, casting doubt over his participation at next month’s French Open. Medvedev, who won the U.S. Open last year and lost in the Australian Open final to Rafa Nadal in January, will likely miss out on this month’s Monte Carlo Masters as well as the ATP 1000 events in Madrid and Rome in May. “The last months I have been playing with a small hernia. Together with my team I have decided to have a small procedure done to fix the problem,” world number two Medvedev wrote on Twitter.

LO N D O N, A P R 2 (AGENCIES): Liverpool completed its 119-day mission to displace Manchester City from atop the English Premier League. It only lasted a matter of hours. The status quo was ultimately maintained in what is promising to be another gripping fight for the
title between the two giants from northwest England after both teams won on Saturday. Liverpool was first up, beating Watford 2-0 to make it 10 straight victories in the league. That meant City dropped out of first place for the first time since Dec.
4 — but not for long. Pep Guardiola’s team kicked off barely 30 minutes later, at relegation-threatened Burnley, took the lead after five minutes and eased to a 2-0 victory. Liverpool and City have games in the Champions League quarterfinals on Tuesday before what could
yet be a decisive meeting at City’s Etihad Stadium five days later. One point will separate them heading into that potential title-decider, with seven more games each to play after that. If third-place Chelsea had any faint ambitions of catching the top two, they were surely extinguished after conceding four secondhalf goals in a 4-1 home loss to London rival Brentford. One of Brentford’s scorers at Stamford Bridge was Christian Eriksen, who netted the second for his first goal in the Premier League since returning from suffering a cardiac arrest at last year’s European Championship. He also scored in backto-back games for Denmark over the international break. Wolverhampton kept up its push for a finish in the European positions by beating Aston Villa 2-1 while Leeds drew 1-1 with Southampton and last-place Norwich held Brighton 0-0 and is now seven points from safety. Women’s doubles pair of Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand also had reached the semifinals of the All England Championships last month, while Kiran George, Unnati Hooda had claimed the Odisha Open Super 100 titles in January. BAI will also conduct trials for the junior players. The players for the selection trials will be chosen based on the performances of the upcoming U-19 ranking tournament to be held in Bangalore. The dates of the selection trials will clash with the Korean Masters, scheduled from April 12-17. However, BAI has said that it will “withdraw entries of its players from the Super 300 tournament and settle the withdrawal fine amount so that shuttlers can participate in the trials.”
FIH Hockey Women’s Jr World Cup: Lalrindiki hits brace as India beat Wales
Thailand Open: Boxer Minakshi to meet Jutamas
NEW DELHI, APR 2 (PTI): The Badminton Association of India (BAI) on Saturday decided to conduct selection trials at the Indira Gandhi Stadium here from April 15 to 20 to pick teams for the upcoming major events such as Thomas and Uber Cup, Commonwealth Games and Asian Games. The national governing body will also be “finalising probables for the senior core group for the 2024 Olympic Games” during the trials. While the players inside the top 15 in the BWF rankings will be picked directly, the rest of the members will be chosen from the trials which will see the participation of shuttlers ranked between 16 to 50 in the latest world rankings, released on March 29. It meant double Olympic medallist P V Sindhu (World No. 7), world championships silver and bronze medallists Kidambi Srikanth (World No. 12) and Lakshya Sen (World No. 9)
P OTC H E F S T RO O M (SOUTH AFRICA), APR 2 (IANS): Forward Lalrindiki scored twice on Saturday to help India start their campaign in the FIH Hockey Women’s Junior World Cup 2022 with a clinical 5-1 win over Wales, here. Lalrindiki scored in the 31st and 57th minutes while seasoned Lalremsiami (3rd min), Mumtaz Khan (4th min) and Deepika (57th min) contributed a goal each as the Indians easily overcame the challenge posed by Wales for whom Millie Holme scored the lone goal in the 25th minute. The Indians played aggressive hockey, dominated possession and were held 1-1 at half-time before scoring twice each in the third and fourth quarters to seal the victory. Of their five goals, two came off penalty corners. India took an early lead in the match delayed by heavy showers at the NorthWest University Academy turf when Lalremsiami deflected into the goal Sangita Kumari’s drive from the edge of the box. The Indians, for whom Deepika took the first shot at goal when she tested Welsh
and men’s pairing of Chirag Shetty and Satwiksairaj Rankireddy (World No. 7) are the only ones assured of a place in the teams for the big-ticket events. Among others, London Games bronze medallist Saina Nehwal, currently ranked 23rd, and Tokyo Olympian B Sai Praneeth, who is ranked 19th, will have to go through the trials. The Commonwealth Games squad will consist of 10 members with equal number of men and women, while the Asian Games and Thomas and Uber Cup teams will have 20 members each, including 10 men and 10 women. Thomas Cup and Uber Cup are scheduled in Bangkok from May 8 to 15, while Commonwealth Games and Asian Games are slated in Birmingham and Hangzhou, China, from July 28 and September 10 respectively. goalkeeper Horrell Ffion with a powerful drag-flick in the second minute, made some good attacks in the first quarter but could not succeed in adding to their score as the quarter ended 1-0 in their favour. Wales players were a bit more adventurous in the second quarter and ventured out in counter-attacks, one of which led to Millie Holme levelling the score in the 25th minute. With skipper Salima Tete taking charge of the midfield, the Indians continued to dominate the second half and were more successful as they scored four goals.
Lalrindiki scored her first goal of the match in the 31st minute when she bundled the ball home off a goalmouth scramble to make it 2-1. Nine minutes later, midfielder Mumtaz Khan made it 3-1 while Lalrindiki added her second goal of the match in the 56th minute when India made an indirect conversion off a penalty corner after they could not complete the routine properly in the first attempt. A minute later, Deepika blasted home a drag flick to complete the 5-1 scoreline. India next play Germany on Sunday.
NEW DELHI, APR 2 (IANS): Indian women boxers were given relatively tough draws compared to men in the 2022 Thailand Open International Boxing tournament, beginning in Phuket on Sunday, with Minakshi kickstarting the country’s challenge on the opening day against Jutamas Jitpong of Thailand in the 51kg first-round bout. The Boxing Federation of India (BFI) has fielded a 15-member squad in the tournament, which will be played till April 10. It will also be the first tournament for the 2019 World Championship silver medallist Amit Panghal (52kg) and Ashish Kumar (81kg), who won the gold medal in the last edition in the 75kg, since the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. Panghal and Ashish will open their campaigns against opponents from Thailand, Thanakon Aonyaem and Aphisit Khankhokkhruea, respectively in the quarterfinals. The reigning national champions Rohit Mor (57kg) and Sumit (75kg) will also have easy starts to their challenge in the Last-8 stage.
