In his speech Azo announced that NPF was not averse to alliance with any political parties or leaders, as the party’s goal was to “carry forward the aspiration and voice of the Naga people.”He also called upon the party workers to “seek and take God first and carry forward the party” and also to “humble ourselves”, stand united and work hard for a purpose. With the exodus of the 21 MLAs casting its spectre over the oldest regional political party in India, Azo maintained that their intention to shift loyalty was not a new programme and not unexpected but only the timing of the move. Aos celebrate Moatsü festival across the state
Dr. S.C. Jamir
DIMAPUR: Moatsü, one of the premier festivals of the Ao community was celebrated with much pomp and gaiety across Nagaland. The festival was marked by vibrant traditional music and dance performances by various cultural troupes. ‘Unity will be unachievable unless people work together’ Moatoshi Longkumer, MLA, on Tuesday said unity would be unachievable unless people worked together and imparted virtues such as compassion, forgiveness, patience and put them to practice. Speaking at the festival organised by Ao Senso Telongjem Dimapur (ASTD) at ASTD Senden Reju, special guest, Moatoshi Longkumer emphasised on the past glories and achievements of the Aos in the Naga society. He, however,
lamented that the once “land of pioneers” had now lost its relevance and questioned if the Aos had gone from “land of pioneers” to “land of followers”. In this regard, he said much was needed to be done to restore the past glory of the Aos. Stressing on the importance of oneness in order to progress, Moatoshi said unity among the people was essential for a community to excel and called upon the gathered progress collectively. Stating that people always talked about unity but seldom remained united, he said a community remained divided because people were seldom appreciative of others’ efforts and successes. Pointing out that there was a need to sensitise the younger generation on work culture, Moatoshi suggested for selection of some “ini-

Tree plantation drive at Viswema
Correspondent
KOHIMA, MAY 3 (NPN): Viswema Baptist Church organised a mass fruit tree plantation drive at the village premises as precursor to the celebration of their upcoming 100 years of Christianity. In a short speech, guest of the event, Nagaland Baptist Church Council (NBCC) general secretary, Rev Dr Zelhou Keyho said the drive was one which was meant for the welfare of the future generations. He observed that it was a noble work which would be valued and held in high esteem by future generations. While exhorting that God had given a variety of fruit trees meant for mankind, Dr Zelhou prayed for the success of the celebration. In a brief remark, Angami Baptist Church Council executive secretary, Rev Dr Atsi Dolie said the planted trees should bear fruits and become a source of inspiration to the people. Drawing comparison on the fruits of the spirit in the Bible, Rev Dolie said people should also bear good fruits. He stressed on the need for church members in particular and members of the village in general to bear fruits as a preparation for the upcoming centenary. Meanwhile, Entrepreneurs Associates (EA) founder, Neichüte Doulo said planting fruit trees was important not
just for the environment but also as a source of income. He said EA’s vision was to plant two million fruit trees by 2025, 200 million by 2035 and one billion by 2050 which would involve one million individuals from the entire Northeast region. Doulo informed that after the vision was put into action in 2019, so far, 3.60 lakh fruit trees had been planted. He also donated 100 fruit trees on behalf of EA. Centenary Planning Committee convenor, Dr Hovithal Sothu who chaired the programme said they made arrangements to ensure that the planted trees grow at any cost and that they would keep on supplementing any saplings that failed to grow. He said the fruit trees which were around in the past had been taken down and now the need to replenish that loss prompted the church to take up the initiative. Dr. Sothu said although it was an initiative of the church, the centenary would be based solely on the arrival of Christianity in the village and that it would not be on denominational lines. Earlier invocation was pronounced by Rev Hosato Kiso, environment and beautification committee convenor, Keneikrul Noswe presented the concept of the plantation drive while youths presented a special number based on the theme of the drive “Lo-The-Wu”. Church leaders oppose legalising Mnp CM inaugurates Tele-ICU Hub at JNIMS hospital casinos & online gambling in M’laya Correspondent

SHILLONG, MAY 3: A Church body in Meghalaya has strongly opposed the state government’s move to legalise casinos and online gambling in the State saying that it’s “immoral and comes at a high price for the society.” The Church body under the banner of Khasi Jaintia Christian Leaders Forum (KJCLF) has also decided to appeal to the state government to revoke its decision by repealing the Meghalaya Regulation of Gaming Act, 2021.
“It is the responsibility of the Government to augment resources for the economic development and prosperity of the State, but efforts such as the legalisation of gambling are immoral and come with a high price to the society,” KJCLF Secretary, Rev. E.H.Kharkongor said. Stating that studies have shown that legitimising gambling is detrimental for the society, the Church leader said, “Gambling can have negative effects on quality of life.” Moreover, gambling can increase criminality
in several ways – through illegal acts such as forgery, fraud, robbery and murder to finance one’s gambling habit. Kharkongor further argued that legalising gambling would further encourage “illegal activities, creation of venues for alcoholrelated offences, flesh-trade and violent crimes.” Noting that legalising gambling would lead our “future generations into despair and destruction,” Kharkongor said, Meghalaya needs true statesmanship instead of businessminded men.
24 Rohingyas detained in Tripura; released later AGARTALA, MAY 3 (IANS): At least 24 Rohingyas including 10 children and 8 women, coming from Jammu, were detained in Tripura’s Unakoti district but subsequently released as they are holding UNHCR cards, the police said on Tuesday. Unakoti district Superintendent Police Kishore Debbarma said that the Border Security Force personnel detained the Rohingyas travelling in three cars at Jiturdighipar check-gate on Monday evening. Later, the BSF handed over the 24 Rohingyas to police, who after verification of their UNHCR (United Nations High Commission on Refugees) cards on Tuesday released them. “The Rohingyas came to Kumarghat railway station by training via Kolkata and Guwahati from their refugee camp in
Jammu. We can not arrest them as they have valid UNHCR cards,” Debbarma told IANS over phone. The foreign nationals have no specific plan where they ultimately would go. Intelligence officials suspect that they are likely to go to Bangladesh and that’s why they came to bordering Kailashahar. On April 27, six Rohingya migrants, including one holding a UNHCR card, were held at Dharmanagar railway station in North Tripura district. Rohingya Muslims often enter the northeastern states illegally from Bangladesh in search of jobs and for other purposes. During the past two years, over 200 Rohingyas, who are citizens of Myanmar, have been detained in different northeastern states by the Border Security Force and other security agencies.

Cong targets govt ahead of mega Communal tensions on Eid in Jodhpur LIC IPO, says shares undervalued
Mobile internet services suspended, curfew imposed
JODHPUR/JAIPUR, MAY 3 (PTI): Communal tensions gripped Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot’s hometown Jodhpur hours before Eid on Tuesday, prompting the authorities to suspend mobile internet services and impose a curfew in 10 police stations areas of the city. The chief minister has appealed to people to maintain peace and harmony. The Jodhpur deputy commissioner of police issued orders imposing a curfew till May 4 midnight besides suspending mobile internet services to check the spread of rumours. Tensions broke out past midnight over putting up of Islamic flags on the Jalori gate circle, which led to stone pelting in which five policemen were injured. The situation was brought under control in the early hours on Tuesday with heavy deployment of police but tensions escalated again in the morning after prayers at an Eidgah. Shops, vehicles and

houses were pelted with stones near the Jalori gate area. Members of the minority community were installing Eid flags and they put up a flag on a roundabout alongside the statue of freedom fighter Balmukund Bissa. This led to a confrontation as members of the other community alleged that a saffron flag, which they had put up there ahead of Parshuram Jayanti, had gone missing. The issue snowballed into stone-pelting and clashes, officials said. Police rushed to the
spot to control the situation during which five policemen were injured, the police control room said. Police had to lob tear gas shells to disperse the mob. Mobile internet services were suspended in the area to check the spread of rumours, the officials said. Gehlot in a tweet urged people to maintain peace and called the incident unfortunate. “While respecting the tradition of love and brotherhood of Jodhpur, Marwar, I make a touching appeal to all parties to maintain peace and cooperate in
restoring law and order,” he said. The chief minister said instructions had been issued to the administration to maintain peace and order. He said leaders of all political parties should ask their workers to maintain peace and they all should remain united. Gehlot also chaired a high-level meeting at the Chief Minister’s office to review the situation. He asked ministers Rajendra Yadav and Subhash Garg, and two officers to go to Jodhpur by helicopter. The CM directed of-
ficials to take stern action against those responsible for it. A criminal, irrespective of his religion, caste or class, must not be spared, the CM told officials. On the other hand, the BJP targeted the state government over law and order. Union minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat claimed that police are working under pressure. Shekhawat threatened that he, along with other party leaders, will sit on a dharna at the Jalori gate circle if the rioters are not arrested. “One man was stabbed and is struggling for life in hospital. The miscreants also insulted women and broke the leg of a girl. They also tried to damage a temple in the Sunaro Ka Baas area,” he alleged. BJP MLA Suryakanta Vyas in Jodhpur raised an objection to the installation of a Eid flag alongside the freedom fighter’s statue. She had gone to the spot last night as soon as the incident occurred. “They did (put up the flag) at (the statue of) Bissa ji and we have a strong objection to this. We will not forget this,” Vyas said.
NEW DELHI, MAY 3 (PTI): Ahead of the mega LIC IPO, the Congress Tuesday questioned the pricing of shares, alleging they are undervalued and being offered at throwaway prices at the cost of the trust of 30 crore policyholders. Congress general secretary and chief spokesperson Randeep Surjewala asked why did the government reduce LIC valuation from Rs 12-14 lakh crore in February to Rs 6 lakh crore in just two months. He said the government had in February this year targeted to get Rs 70,000 crore by selling five percent stake in the public sector undertaking, but it has now been reduced to Rs 21,000 crore and 3.5 percent stake sale. “Why is the government trying to sell LIC when domestic and global financial markets are in turmoil on account of the Russia-Ukraine war and a host of factors leading to economic downturn,” he asked. “The Secretar y in charge of public sector divestment has said that the government will not sell
Randeep Surjewala
its stake in PSUs if market conditions are not favourable. Why is LIC’s IPO an exception to this policy? India seeks answers,” he said. Surjewala said that while filing the prospectus in February 2022 for this mega IPO, the LIC disinvestment was aimed at 2.5 times the embedded value (EV), but now the valuation of the IPO is about 1.1 times the embedded value. Comparably, HDFC Life Insurance is trading at 3.9 times EV, and SBI Life & ICICI Prudential Life trade at 3.2 times and 2.5 times their embedded value respectively, he said. He also claimed that since January-February 2022, the share price band of LIC has been paired down by the Modi govern-
ment from Rs 1100 per share to the current price band of Rs 902 - 949 per share and some experts feel that the state exchequer will lose Rs 30,000 crore by this reduction in embedded value and the pairing down the price band. “Why did the Modi Government suddenly reduce the valuation of LIC and the issue size after roadshows in India and abroad,” he asked, claiming that in February 2022, the government conducted formal roadshows for big ticket investors, Pension Funds, Mutual Funds, Investment Corporations with a target to get Rs 70,000 crore by selling of five percent stake. He sought answers from the government for the reason for a “change of heart” after roadshows abroad to revise the valuation and also reduce the stake sale from five per cent to 3.5% “which remains unexplained”. The reason for the government undermining these key determinants is unknown to every market watcher or financial expert, he said.

NEW DELHI, MAY 3 (PTI): Heatwave has abated from all parts of the country and the maximum temperature has further fallen by two to four degrees Celsius over Rajasthan, Punjab, Delhi and Haryana, the India Meteorological Department said on Tuesday. No part of northwest, central and east India is likely to record a heatwave over the next five days, the MeT office said. No significant change is predicted in the maximum temperature over most parts of northwest India and central India during the next two to three days. The mercury is likely to increase by two to three degrees Celsius thereafter, it said in a statement. Heatwave conditions will return to some parts of Maharashtra from Wednesday and isolated areas of Rajasthan from Friday, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said. Under the influence of a Western Disturbance, isolated light rainfall, dust storm, and thunderstorm with winds gusting up to 50 kmph is very likely over Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan during the next two days.

Several places in the country had logged all-time high temperatures for April with the mercury leaping to 46-47 degrees Celsius under the impact of the torrid heatwave. ing it effectively. Such gestures help build a peaceful atmosphere and cordial relationship between both border guarding forces,” the spokesperson said. Similar exchange of sweets wad done between the BSF and its eastern counterpart Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB), at several points across the front. The South Bengal frontier of the force headquartered in Kolkata, the capital of West Bengal, said its troops exchanged sweets and greetings with BGB personnel at Pertrapole (North 24 Parganas district) and other posts. “Both the border guarding forces share cordial and congenial relations. The exchange of sweets are a goodwill gesture and reflect true comradeship. It also helps in building and strengthening cordial relations,” the spokesperson said. T H I RU VA NA N T H A PURAM, MAY 3 (IANS): Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, who is under treatment at the Mayo Clinic in US, on Tuesday wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi seeking his urgent intervention to see that the “exorbitant” airfares in the domestic and international sector are reduced. “I write this letter to invite your kind attention to the substantial hike in air fares in all domestic and international sectors which is adversely affecting a large number of our pravasis who travel to their home country in the vacation time, besides, tourists have also started visiting after the decline of incidence of Covid-19 pandemic. “One of the major key sector affected by Covid-19 was the hospitality industry, including travel and tourism. Though this sector has been opened and has started functioning normally the new challenge which can be the reason for a setback to return to normalcy is the exorbitant air fares,” he said.
CHANDIGARH, MAY 3 (PTI): Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann on Tuesday said hatemongers have no place in Punjab and seeds of hatred don’t bloom on this land, remarks which come days after two groups clashed in Patiala. Anything can be planted in the fertile land of Punjab but not the seeds of hatred, he said addressing a gathering in Malerkotla after offering prayers at the local Idgah on the occasion of Eid-ul-Fitr. Mann said, “Punjab’s social bonding is very strong. We live in brotherhood and those who spread hatred find no place here”. “Punjab is the land of gurus, pir, fakirs, poets and martyrs, seeds of hatred don’t bloom here,” he said giving a stern warning to elements trying to disturb peace and harmony of the state. Two groups had clashed on Friday last in Patiala over an anti-Khalistan march, hurling stones at each other and brandishing swords, forcing police to fire in the air to bring the situation under control. Beginning his speech by saying “Assalamualaikum, Eid Mubarak”, Mann said he was happy to come

to Malerkotla on the occasion of Eid. He also talked about the significance behind the Muslim holy month of Ramzan. The Eid festival symbolises universal brotherhood, peace and amity, he said. In his address, Mann said his government has started taking action against the corrupt and land encroachers. Noting that his government is about 45 days old, he sought time to put the “spoilt system” back on track. “We have started the work to go after those who are corrupt, against the en-
croachers,” he said, adding, “You will find good results”. Mann said those who looted Punjab will be held accountable and every single penny will be recovered and used in development works and in improving health and education and roads. “You have reposed trust in me and this has added to my responsibility even more,” he said. Mann said that people can give suggestions and promised that in the coming time they will see a positive change in Punjab. “Inshallah, in the coming one or two years you will find a changed Punjab,
a rangla (vibrant) Punjab,” he said. He said the previous Congress government had just given district status to Malerkotla but a lot has to be done to make it a district in a real sense. Mann said he was well aware of the needs of Malerkotla and development of education and health infrastructure in the district would be given top priority and there would be no dearth of funds in carrying out development works. The chief minister said he does not make promises which he cannot fulfil. Reiterating his government’s commitment to regain the lost glory of the state, Mann said after the AAP formed government people of the state have witnessed initiatives to provide clean and transparent administration besides creating enormous job opportunities for the youth. Giving out an assurance that his government will break the tradition set by previous governments of allegedly registering false cases against their political opponents, the chief minister said previous governments have done nothing but “mercilessly plundered” the resources of the state.
India is ‘not fine’ with divide and rule policy: Mamata Non-bailable warrant issued KOLKATA, MAY 3 (PTI): Lamenting that the “policy of divide and rule” and “politics of isolation” have created a situation where the country is “not fine”, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Tuesday asked people to unite to change the situation. Participating in Eid-ulFitr prayers held on a raindrenched Red Road here, the chief minister appealed to the people to fight against the “power which is trying to divide the country and oppress the people”. Without naming her rival, the Bharatiya Janata Party, which she has often accused of trying to divide people on the basis of religion for electoral gains, Banerjee quoted the lines from a song sung by musical icon Lata Mangeshkar “Ishwar allah tero naam, sabko sanmati de bhagwan” (Ishwar, Allah they are all your names; Kindly bestow wisdom on all, Lord!), to underline her point. Addressing a gathering of about 14,000 people, Banerjee said, “The situation in the country is not fine. The policy of divide and rule and politics of isolation going on in the country are not correct. Do not be scared and keep on fighting.”

“I am happy that after a gap of two years, you have assembled for this historic Eid prayer at the Red Road. This does not happen anywhere. The situation in the country is not fine. The policy of divide and rule and politics of isolation going on in the country are not correct. “There are jealous people who keep on telling lies to create division among the Hindus and the Muslims. Do not be scared and keep on fighting,” she said at the congregation. “I promise today, as long as I am alive, I will fight for the cause of the people whether they are Muslims or Hindus or Sikhs or Jains. I get strength from you to fight,” she said.
In an apparent reference to the BJP, she said, “They (without taking name of the saffron party) are jealous because of the unity among people In Bengal and that is why they abuse me. They will keep on humiliating me but I am not scared and know how to fight,” she said. Referring to the BJP’s rhetoric of “achhe din”, Banerjee assured people at the gathering of “real `achhe din’ (good days), not the “jhootha ache din” (fake good days). “Your good days will also come. I do not want `jhoothe achhe din’ (fake good days). Rather, I want `Achhe din sachche din mein aye’ (rather good days to come
in truth). I pray for that,” the chief minister said. She underlined that she wants “unity in the country”. “`Sare jahan se achha, Hindustan hamara (In all the world, Hindustan is the best),” the TMC supremo added. Earlier in the day, both Banerjee and West Bengal Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar greeted the people of the state on the occasion of Eid. “Eid Mubarak! Wishing everyone lots of happiness, peace, prosperity and good health. Pray that our bonds of unity and harmony strengthen further. May Allah bless all,” Banerjee wrote on the microblogging site. Dhankhar also wished the people and prayed that he festival would bring in happiness, peace and prosperity around the globe. “Eid Mubarak! Greetings to all on the occasion of ‘Eid-ul-Fitr’. May this festival bring happiness, peace and prosperity all around,” Dhankhar tweeted. Eid ul Fitr is a major festival observed by Muslims around the world that marks the conclusion of Ramzan, the Islamic holy month of fasting.
against Raj in 14-year-old case
Raj Thackeray
SANGLI, MAY 3 (PTI): A court in western Maharashtra’s Sangli district has issued a non-bailable warrant against MNS chief Raj Thackeray in connection with a 14-year-old case. In 2008, Thackeray was booked under sections 109 and 117 (abetment of offence) of IPC for allegedly making inflammatory speeches. While issuing the nonbailable warrant on April 6, Judicial Magistrate, First Class at Shirala in Sangli district asked Mumbai police commission to arrest the MNS chief and present him before the court. The judge issued the warrant against Thackeray and another MNS leader Shirish Parkar through Mumbai police commissioner and Kherwadi police
station respectively as they failed to produce themselves before the court during the case proceeding, said assistant public prosecutor, Jyoti Patil. She said the court has asked police to implement the warrant before June 8 and produce both the leaders before the court. In 2008, MNS workers had staged a protest in Shirala against the arrest of Thackeray in an agitation seeking priority for local youth in jobs. A local MNS functionary claimed there was a government rule which states that political cases prior to 2012 should be withdrawn. However, this case is being raked up as Thackeray raised the issue of loudspeakers atop mosques, he added.

Intrinsic trait
t is sad but true, that the politics of divide and hate continues to flourish in India, a country which once prided itself as a secular, multi-cultural, multi-linguistic and multi-religious society where tolerance had so long kept the diverse character vibrant. Whether it be the caste wars in the cow belt or communalism in north India and casteism also in some north Indian states, Indian politics has earned an unsavoury reputation. Caste and communal politics being part of the way of life at it may; becomes a natural course to run when politics is played out. In this, communal and caste politics is being played by almost all political parties but to varying degrees. If thousands were killed during the anti-Sikh pogrom in 1984 after the assassination of Indira Gandhi, supposedly by Hindus a.k.a. Congress workers or sympathisers; a few thousand muslims were also killed during the 2002 Gujarat pogrom. These serve to remind of a famous Sherlock Holmes story about ‘the dog that did not bark’. Holmes solves the mystery by surmising that the murderer was known to the watchdog. In a like manner, what is being witnessed in India are scores of attacks, verbal and physical, on Muslims and Christians of the country. Yet, the watchdogs- those who rule the country and its law and order machinery - seem to have heard nothing. Recent communal clashes and stone-pelting and arson, in which several people, including policemen, were injured in MP, Rajasthan and UP are worrisome signs. On April 10, communal violence was reported in Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Jharkhand, and West Bengal. The provocations and resultant reactions have been the causes that has sparked communal embers. This has become the order of the day after 2014, when the notion of pluralism has been subjected to constant bombardment by groups and leaders of political parties, who were once described as fringe elements. Today, thanks mainly to the abuse of authority and browbeating media into submission, the fringe they have become mainstream. On the other hand, the entire machinery and polity have been used to defame, dislodge and discredit secularism and unity in diversity and the once liberal community comprising of all who believe in a pluralistic and democratic India, have today been pushed to the fringes. Today in India, the media has become drum beaters and by that, become accomplices in muzzling democratic freedom. A case in point, unconfirmed allegations of conversion fraud became headline in some electronic media. Later all these were proved to be half truths. Whatever be the arguments or counter-arguments, the lurking apprehension felt among minority communities in India cannot be dismissed outright especially since some ministers including some MPs of the ruling government have not been censured for their provocative utterances. In a parliamentary and constitutional democracy, the role of the opposition is vital. Today, the opposition in India are at loggerhead with each other and that itself is a serious concern against checkmating authoritarianism.
DailyDevotion Faith— Not Emotion
We walk by faith, not by sight. —2 Corinthians 5:7
For a while, we are fully aware of God’s concern for us. But then, when God begins to use us in His work, we begin to take on a pitiful look and talk only of our trials and difficulties. And all the while God is trying to make us do our work as hidden people who are not in the spotlight. None of us would be hidden spiritually if we could help it. Can we do our work when it seems that God has sealed up heaven? Some of us always want to be brightly illuminated saints with golden halos and with the continual glow of inspiration, and to have other saints of God dealing with us all the time. A self-assured saint is of no value to God. He is abnormal, unfit for daily life, and completely unlike God. We are here, not as immature angels, but as men and women, to do the work of this world. And we are to do it with an infinitely greater power to withstand the struggle because we have been born from above. If we continually try to bring back those exceptional moments of inspiration, it is a sign that it is not God we want. We are becoming obsessed with the moments when God did come and speak with us, and we are insisting that He do it again. But what God wants us to do is to “walk by faith.” How many of us have set ourselves aside as if to say, “I cannot do anything else until God appears to me”? He will never do it. We will have to get up on our own, without any inspiration and without any sudden touch from God. Then comes our surprise and we find ourselves exclaiming, “Why, He was there all the time, and I never knew it!” Never live for those exceptional moments— they are surprises. God will give us His touches of inspiration only when He sees that we are not in danger of being led away by them. We must never consider our moments of inspiration as the standard way of life— our work is our standard.

Post-mortem
India’s power crisis is an opportunity to spur clean energy transition
H
eatwaves are sweeping across India. March 2022 was the hottest March since 1901, according to Indian Meteorological Department data. The high temperatures have continued in April and this is adding to the woes of the distribution companies which are trying to meet increasing electricity demand. India experienced peak demand of 200 gigawatts (GW) in March and April, an increase of 8% over the previous year. On 12 April, the peak power shortage was 8500MW and on 28 April it was 10,778MW, while the maximum demand met was a record 204GW. The rising demand is being met through an increase in both thermal and renewable energy generation. What is causing the power outages? India has a total installed capacity of 400GW (as of March 2022), which is almost twice the peak demand. However, about 12% of the capacity mix is hydro, which is seasonal, and 28% is renewable energy, which is intermittent and may not
be available during peak hours unless firmed up with storage capacity. About 51% (204GW) is coal-based, firm capacity. However, coal plants are running at low capacity utilisation with average plant load factors (PLFs) of 68%. Coal shortages are a key reason for the low PLFs. Issues with logistics have also led to lower coal offtake. There is a need for greater availability of freight rakes for coal transportation. In fact, the Ministry of Power has asked power generation companies to buy their own rakes under a Ministry of Railways scheme to deal with logistical constraints in coal supply. Also, coal inventories at power plants on 1 April had an average stock of just nine days, the lowest level since at least 2014 (power plants are required to maintain at least two weeks of supply). At the start of March, there were 80 plants with critical coal supplies. On 12 April (one of the maximum
T
he case for Hindi has been variously made in recent days. Amit Shah told the Parliamentary Official Language Committee that in states where people speak in their own regional language, the alternative language should be Hindi and not English. Ajay Devgn, an actor from the Hindi film industry, reacting to an interview by a Kannada film actor, Kichcha Sudeep, asserted that “Hindi was and will always be our mother tongue and our national language.” Finally, Sanjay Nishad, Uttar Pradesh’s fisheries minister, declared that “Hindustan is not a place for those who do not speak Hindi. They should leave this country and go somewhere else.” Shah’s statement was the most temperate, followed by Devgn’s which seemed to rhetorically confuse Hindi’s status as one of the Central government’s two official languages (the other being English) with its (non-existent) status as India’s sole national language, but the prize for peak chauvinism belonged to Nishad who said that Indians who didn’t love Hindi were actually foreigners or clients of foreign powers. Despite these differences in tone, it’s important to recognize the anxiety that these statements have in common: the sense that a multilingual country needs a single national language to be properly united. This is an idea borrowed from the history of nation states in Europe. Most European nations have a single dominant language that effectively defines the nation: thus France/ French, England/English, Spain/ Spanish etc. When non-Western countries were constituted into nation states, they modelled themselves
peak shortage days), this reached 97, and on April 28, it was 108. Importantly, developers have not maintained enough stock even when coal was available. Record-high global coal prices mean that bridging the gap in the domestic coal requirement through imports is expensive. Newcastle coal futures, the benchmark for Asia, the top consuming region, are about US$325 per ton from US$90 per ton a year back, supported by skyrocketing demand amid tight supplies of alternative energy products and sanctions on Russian coal. The increasing power prices will add to the financial woes of debt-laden power distributors, which owe Rs1.1 lakh crore rupees to power generators, especially with global coal prices trading at steep premiums compared to average levels in 2021 due to the Russia-Ukraine war. Commercial and industrial consumers who rely on open access will bear the brunt of having to source expensive electricity
from the open market, with average prices at the power exchange in the range of Rs9-12/kWh and peak prices reaching Rs12/kWh consistently in the past few days. In March prices hit Rs15-18/kWh. In early April, the regulator reduced the ceiling price to Rs12/ kWh. The prices in the short-term market have skyrocketed on account of the domestic coal shortage and high imported coal prices. Due to supply shortages, prices at the power exchange are hitting the ceiling during most hours. Power cuts will also dampen the growth of industrial activity. Coal India is cutting supplies of coal to the non-power sector. This means that industries such as aluminium and steel could face power shortages – just as they begin to revive after COVID-19 and witness increasing demand. How to tackle the crisis The government’s immediate response is to try to avert the crisis by increasing imports and asking captive
generators to generate at maximum capacity. Several states have asked idle thermal power plants to resume operations and are willing to pay higher prices for coal and gas power to stave off a crisis. The power ministry is asking utilities to increase coal imports for blending to 36 million tonnes. The power shortage crisis has revealed that the cost of coal-based generation is high and, further, is inflationary. With energy demand likely to go up further, India needs to invest in sustainable energy choices. The government should accelerate the deployment of domestically produced, deflationary renewable energy. India has set huge targets for renewable energy by 2030 and net zero by 2070. In order to achieve these targets and to integrate large amounts of renewable energy into the grid, India now needs to push for more firming capacity such as pumped hydro and battery storage. The gover nment should provide incentives through investing in re-

on European examples. The European suspicion of multilingualism is historical. Countries like England and France actively suppressed minority languages like Welsh and Provencal by not allowing them to be taught in schools or used for official communication. A multiplicity of languages wasn’t just seen as redundant, it was seen as dangerous, a portent of disunity and incoherence. Even the Bible seemed to endorse this anxiety in the story of the Tower of Babel told in Genesis. In the beginning when men were virtuous, “the whole earth was of one language and of one speech.” Then, when humans succumbed to hubris and tried to build a tower that would touch the heavens, God intervened: “Go to, let us go down, and there confound their language, that they may not understand one another’s speech. So the Lord scattered them abroad from thence upon the face of all the earth: and they left off to build the city. Therefore is the name of it called Babel; because the Lord did there confound the language of all the earth: and from thence did the Lord scatter them abroad upon the face of all the earth.” This fear of being scattered by a babel of tongues haunts nation states. The Congress, thanks to Gandhi, had embraced India’s many languages by organizing the party into linguistic regions, but the rulers of the new republic in its early years were still attracted to the unifying discipline of a single language. We see this in the attempt to instal Hindi as India’s national language, its rashtra bhasha. Even Nehru thought that a flexible and everyday Hindi was needed to bind India together.
But when the policy encountered serious resistance from southern, non-Hindi-speaking provinces, the republican State shamelessly fudged the matter. First Hindi was formally given pre-eminence, then English ‘temporarily’ retained, then the champions of regional languages were mollified by neutering Hindi: the provinces were allowed to communicate with the Centre in English. Did this fudge ‘solve’ the question of a ‘national’ language? No. But it wasn’t intended to. The republic’s leaders had served a long apprenticeship as anticolonial pluralists: it had taught them how to procrastinate, to defer, to postpone, to buy time till hot button issues went cold. A pluralist nationalism ducks the task of defining the national ‘self ’. Recognizing that in a country as large and as diverse as a subcontinent one size can’t fit all, the republic improvised ways of avoiding the homogenizing definitions that Western constructions of nationalism pressed upon nation states. And thanks to this talent for postponement, republican India laid the spectre of Babel, the fear that linguistic diversity makes a democratic republic incoherent, disunited, unworkable. But the ascendant nationalism that Shah, Devgn and Nishad subscribe to is a paranoid, handme-down version of Europe’s homogenizing nationalism. The Bharatiya Jana Sangh’s political motto combined the European nation state’s fixation with a single language with its own commitment to a Hindu State: ‘Hindi, Hindu, Hindustan’. It should surprise no one that the Jana Sangh’s contemporary avatar, the Bharatiya Janata Party,
has, in its moment of ascendancy, reheated the ‘national language’ question. It can’t help itself: for a majoritarian nationalism, all nonmajoritarian communities, religious or linguistic, are subversive identities that need to be publicly subordinated. The BJP’s restoking of the language controversy is plainly ideological because practically speaking, Hindi’s pan-Indian hegemony is a fait accompli. Most schools that cater to India’s pan-Indian middle class teach Hindi. Provincial elites everywhere voluntarily educate their children in English and Hindi because they recognize that Central government jobs and elite, all-India educational institutions become more accessible through these languages. Hindi’s status as an urban lingua franca in cities far outside the Hindi heartland like Mumbai, Calcutta and Bengaluru makes it a useful language to travel with. Left to itself, Hindi would entrench itself ever more deeply without the provocations of Hindi’s propagandists. So why rub it in? The reasons can be grouped under two heads: ideology and ignorance. Having mostly captured the Hindi heartland which anchors its parliamentary majority, the BJP sees Hindi as a wedge issue that it can own. Since the states most impervious to its charms are non-Hindi speaking, the BJP sees doubling down on Hindi hegemony as an easy way of consolidating its grip over the heartland. This makes practical political sense; as Hindi-speaking provinces, given their birth-rates, become demographically more dominant, their weight in securing parliamentary majorities will
search and development (R&D) on energy storage and green hydrogen, and a Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme to encourage the domestic manufacturing of batteries and electrolysers for green hydrogen production. Financial suppor t could be provided initially through schemes such as Viability Gap Funding (VGF) to make these technologies more affordable. When economies of scale occur, these technologies would become price-competitive on their own, enabling more firming capacity and an increase in the share of renewable energy. I nve s t i n g i n t h e rmal energy to help India through the power crisis risks diverting limited financial resources away from cheaper clean energy. In addition, investing in a thermal asset at any stage of the value chain effectively locks in investment for 25-30 years or more. Institute for Energy Economics & Financial Analysis (IEEFA)
only grow. For parties willing to disturb the pluralist peace, Hindi chauvinism is practical politics. As a native Hindi speaker who travels under a South Indian surname, I can testify to the fact that nearly all Hindi speakers genuinely believe that Hindi was anointed by the Indian Constitution as the country’s sole national language. Their ignorance has been fostered by the deliberate blurring of the distinction between official link language and ‘national’ language by successive Central governments. The Hindi belt’s insularity reinforces their ignorance. Notice that Devgn ends his Hindi-affirming tweet with “Jan Gan Man”, the Hindi speaker’s generic name for the national anthem, used here as a patriotic slogan. The irony of invoking an anthem written in Bangla to seal the case for Hindi’s supremacy just doesn’t strike him. The European Union has twenty-four official languages and three procedural languages: English, German and French. Even after Brexit, English remains one of the three link languages because many of the EU’s constituent countries prefer it to German and French. Instead of following the EU’s lead or India’s own republican practice in the matter of language, Amit Shah and his chorus have chosen to follow the Soviet/Russian model where the elevation and imposition of a dominant language become synonymous with patriotism and unity. If there is one lesson that Russification holds for the world in 2022, it must be that linguistic chauvinism doesn’t end well. Mukul Kesavan (As published in The Telegraph)
Climate change leading India’s blistering heat waves. Is the worst yet to come?

ndia’s severe heat waves are expected to stretch into early next month, meaning millions of people will have to endure more days of dangerous temperatures and hours-long blackouts. The South Asian nation is bracing for temperatures to rise to a record high, according to Mrutyunjay Mohapatra, head of the country’s meteorological department. The agency is working with states and the federal government’s disaster management arm to get early warnings to those on the ground, he said in an interview in New Delhi. Thermometer readings have already reached 46 degrees Celsius (115 degrees Fahrenheit) in central and northern India, with two months to go before the monsoon season that typically brings cooling rains. They hit the highest since 1901 last month. The heat has tested power grids as air conditioners
run on full blast and threatened wheat crops. Local authorities are implementing action plans to manage health risks and even deaths, Mohapatra said. “Why is it exceptionally warm this year? The only reason is global warming,” said Roxy Mathew Koll, a climate scientist at the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology. “We have looked at data for seventy years and at the intensity, the number of heatwaves is directly in response to global warming.” India is expected to suffer more frequent and intense heat waves, extreme rainfall and erratic monsoons in the coming decades as the planet warms, according to the United Nations’ Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. McKinsey estimates that work hours lost to heat waves could cause losses of as much as $250 billion, or 4.5% of gross domestic product, by the end of the decade.
For India, the world’s poorest super-emitter, adapting to a hotter Earth is as urgent a task as cutting planet-warming emissions. A recent study showed a 62% rise in heat-related deaths in the last 20 years. An official assessment of climate change published in 2020 showed that the frequency and intensity of droughts and cyclones had significantly increased in the last six decades. The number of days of intense rainfall and the pace at which sea levels are rising have more than doubled over that period. The disasters underscore how countries like India, which are responsible for relatively little of the greenhouse gases accumulated in the atmosphere, often bear the brunt of climate impacts. That means spending billions to protect themselves instead of investing in economic development that could lift millions out of poverty. These countries, especially in Africa, also tend to
lack resources to monitor and forecast the weather so they can better prepare for extreme events. India is investing to improve its observational data and computing capabilities to build better climate models, said Mohapatra. The country’s official weather forecaster managed to cut the number of deaths caused by cyclones to six in 2021 from 10,000 a year in 1999 by making more accurate short-term predictions. Still, the country is racing against the clock as more erratic weather becomes harder to forecast. “Worsening climate change is limiting predictability of events,” said Mohapatra. For now, local governments may have to consider a range of measures to keep people safe from the heat, Mohapatra said. They could restrict school hours to the cooler morning hours of 7 a.m. to 11 a.m., advise against farm and construction work in the afternoon and provide
extra support to street vendors, outdoor workers, police and to those living in city slums without access to cooling devices. On Thursday evening, the meteorological department issued an orange alert for the next five days for northwest and central India. The region, home to some of the world’s most polluted air, hasn’t received the light summer rain that usually comes in April and May to lower temperatures and wash away dirty particulate matter.“IPCC projections clearly show that the heat intensity is increasing and encroaching on our daily lives, and the impact is on vulnerable people who have little resources in regions where we don’t even have observations,” said Koll from the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology. “We need higher resolution data and, more importantly, we need long-term policies.” (As published in Bloomberg)

BENGALURU, MAY 3 (PTI): Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Tuesday asserted that India has joined the likes of the US and Israel in hitting back at those meddling with their borders and pointed out at the surgical strikes carried out in the wake of the terrorist attack in Pulwama. Flaying the previous Congress regime for its lax security measures, the Home Minister said India used to issue statements whenever terror attacks were carried out by the Pakistan-backed extremists but things have improved after Narendra Modi became the Prime Minister. “Earlier only two nations, the United States of America and Israel, used to retaliate whenever someone meddled with their borders and military. Now due to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, our great nation India has joined that group,” Shah said after inaugurating various projects including the Nrupathunga University, its academic block and various other projects.

The skirmish took place near Dodraj forest in Bhamragadh taluka of Gadchiroli, located over 900 km from the state capital Mumbai, when a team of C-60 commandos, a specialised combat unit of the Gadchiroli police, was patrolling in the area, he said. The ultras, who had gathered in the forest, opened fire at the police patrolling team, following which the security personnel retaliated. After the exchange of fire for some time, Naxals fled into the forest, the official said. Antony on Tuesday called on all the small and big political parties in the country to come on a common platform to oust the BJP from the Centre. “The need of the hour is to oust the anti-people BJP government and for that, all the small and big political parties should unite and come on to a common platform. And for that the Congress should take the lead. All should move together to achieve this. But ‘some’ people are saying that this can be
done without the Congress party. What can be said to such people,” he said, in his first political speech after shifting base from Delhi to Thiruvananthapuram. In his address after inaugurating the platinum jubilee celebrations of the INTUC, the trade union wing of the Congress, here, he said that the Congress party is the only one in the opposition which has a pan India presence in every village, where one can find at least 10 Congress workers. “But the Congress is well aware that this alone will not help and to achieve that, the upcoming Chintan Shivir to be held in Rajasthan will chart out appropriate plans to achieve the objective of dislodging the BJP from the Centre,” added Antony. The 81-year-old ended his Delhi sojourn when his Rajya Sabha term ended last month and arrived here, last week and announced that his future base of work for the Congress party will be done from here.

The BJP’s social media department head Amit Malviya and Union minister Giriraj Singh also tweeted the video. “Rahul Gandhi was at a nightclub when Mumbai (in 2008) was under seize(sic). NTTU accused of ‘forcibly trying’ to harass...
(From p-1) CSOs claimed that operating/sale agreements in respect to that were their possession. CSOs said their decision to allow sawn timber out of the district for time being was on humanitarian ground and to ensure that no fresh cutting of trees was done henceforth and “not on any intention as alleged by NTTU.” Further, CSOs urged the forest department to ensure that no illegal extraction whether round
logs or sawn timber were allowed out of the district. They said the s t a t e g ove r n m e n t a n d union ministry of forest, Environment and Climate Change should also immediately disband organization like NTTU at the earliest for “their illegal activities” which had been going on for so many years till CSOs of Peren District stepped in. They said that economic blockade imposed by NTTU against the legitimate rights of Peren
district for “stopping their illegitimate activities” will not be tolerated at any cost. Therefore, CSOs have asked the state government a n d i t s a d m i n i s t r a t ive machineries not to remain “mere spectator to this arm twisting act of NTTU”, but immediately lift blockade against the citizens of the district. CSOs cautioned that any eventualities resulting from the blockade would be the sole responsibility of the state government and its machineries.

Journalists from minority groups and those in Jammu and Kashmir are particularly at risk,” the groups allege.

BEIJING, MAY 3 (AP): China’s Liaoning aircraft carrier group has embarked on a “realistic combat” training mission in the Western Pacific, the Chinese navy said Tuesday. In a posting on its social media site, the navy said the mission is routine, adhers to all international laws and practices and is “not directed at any third parties.” However, the mission underscores the growing role of China’s naval forces as Beijing seeks to supplant the U.S. as the preeminent military power in Asia. China operates the world’s largest navy by number of ships, while the U.S. maintains an edge in aircraft carriers and nuclear submarines as well as in numbers of bases and allies in the region, where the competition is focused on the strategically vital South China Sea.

The analysts said if the government would be defeated in the SJB motion, Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa and the Cabinet would have to resign. The TNA/UNP motion has no legal binding for the President to resign. “This problem can only be solved if either the President or the Prime Minister resigned. It is up to them to make a decision,” former prime minister Wickremesinghe said. Under the Article 38 of the Constitution, a president can be removed only if he/she volunteered to resign or through the long process of impeachment. Over the weekend a flurry of political meetings

New Delhi has extended aid of over USD 3 billion to SL in 2022 C O LO M B O, M AY 3 (PTI): India has committed more than USD 3 billion to debt-ridden Sri Lanka in loans, credit lines and credit swaps since January this year, the Indian High Commission here said on Tuesday, as the island nation tries to navigate through its worst economic crisis since independence. On Monday, India
had extended its current credit line by a further USD 200 million to replenish Sri Lanka’s rapidly depleting fuel stocks. The ongoing crisis in Sri Lanka is caused in part by a lack of foreign currency, which has meant that the country cannot afford to pay for imports of staple foods and fuel, leading to acute shortages and very high prices.

ISLAMABAD, MAY 3 (PTI): Pakistan’s former interior minister Sheikh Rashid Ahmed has claimed that ousted premier Imran Khan is ready to discuss the holding of early elections with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, as he made a strong case for clearing “misunderstandings” between the ruling and opposition parties. Rashid, who heads the Awami National League-Pakistan, is a key alliance partner of the Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI). PTI activists are set to launch a mega-march to the federal capital, here, from all corners of the country at the end of the month, demanding dates of early elections, Dawn News reported. Rashid said the dem-
onstrations should be limited to convincing the Election Commission of Pakistan to hold early polls and no other state institution should be attacked. “I have started efforts yesterday to remove misunderstanding between them (PTI and the ruling Pakistan Muslim LeagueNawaz),” Rashid was quoted in an article published in VOA News on Monday. “I am in favour of peace with the Army, but in case of ‘war’ I will stand by Imran Khan,” Rashid said. He said Khan was ready to hold talks with the Sharif government for early general elections, but it required the guarantee of “powerful quarters’’, an indirect reference to the powerful military establishment.

WASHINGTON, MAY 3 (IANS): Russian President Vladimir Putin could formally declare war on Ukraine as soon as May 9, a move that would enable the full mobilisation of Moscow’s reserve forces as invasion efforts continue to falter, US and Western officials believe. May 9, known as “Victory Day” in Russia, commemorates the country’s defeat of the Nazis in 1945, reports CNN. We s t e r n o f f i c i a l s have long believed that Putin would leverage the symbolic significance and propaganda value of that day to announce either a military achievement in Ukraine, a major escalation of hostilities, or both. IPL 2022: Punjab thrash Gujarat by 8 wkts Conrad inaugurates 4th Meghalaya Games MUMBAI, MAY 3 (IANS): A disciplined bowling performance followed by a solid batting effort helped Punjab Kings thrash Gujarat Titans by eight wickets in Match No. 48 of IPL 2022 at the Dr. D.Y Patil Stadium, here on Tuesday. Kagiso Rabada claimed an excellent four-fer (4/33) and helped Punjab Kings, after losing the toss and bowling first, restrict Gujarat Titans to 143/8 in 20 overs despite a hardfought fifty by Sai Sudharsan (64 not out off 50). Sudharsan, who came to bat at No 3, was the lone warrior with the bat for Gujarat, who kept losing wickets at regular intervals during their innings. After Sudharsan, Wriddhiman Saha (21 off 17) was the second-highest scorer for GT. Apart from Rabada (4/33), the likes of Rishi Dhawan (1/26), Liam Livingstone (1/15), and Arshdeep Singh (1/35) also chipped in with one wicket each for Punjab. I n r e p l y, S h i k h a r Dhawan (62 not out off 53) used his experience to perfection and smashed a fine fifty. He stitched a vital partnership of 87 off 58 balls for the second wicket with

Bhanuka Rajapaksalbw (40 off 28) before the Sri Lankan batter got out in the 12th over. In the end, Shikhar and Liam Livingstone (30 off 10) remained not out and helped Punjab Kings chase down the target in 16 overs, with eight wickets in hand. Mohammed Shami (1/43) and Lockie Ferguson (1/29) were the wickettakers for Gujarat.
Earlier, after winning the toss and opting to bat first, Gujarat were off to a terrible start, losing the wickets of both openers -- Wriddhiman Saha (21 off 17) and Shubman Gill (9 off 6) inside the first four overs. Gill had a few complaints against the bowler Sandeep Sharma, seemingly accusing him of being in the way but that wasn’t really the case as
Sandeep stood his ground after a follow-through and was merely watching the ball. On the other hand, Saha showed his aggressive intent right from the beginning and looked in fine touch before he was dismissed by Rabada on a cross-seam delivery, leaving Gujarat at 34-2 after 3.5 overs. From there on, skipper Hardik Pandya and Sai Sudharsan batted cautiously and took GT to 42/2 in 6 overs. After the end of the powerplay, the Punjab skipper brought Rishi Dhawan into the attack and he got the big wicket of Hardik (1) in the sent ball of his over, putting Gujarat in trouble. With 129-8 after 18.2 overs, Gujarat were in a position to get bowled out but Sudarshan showed his temperament and hit a few precious boundaries, in the end, to help Gujarat Titans finish with 143/8 in 20 overs. BRIEF SCORES: Gujarat Titans 143/8 in 20 overs (Sai Sudharsan 64 not out, Wriddhiman Saha 21; Kagiso Rabada 4/33) lost to Punjab Kings 145-2 in 16 overs (Shikhar D h aw a n 6 2 n o t o u t , Bhanuka Rajapaksalbw 40; Lockie Ferguson 1/29) by 8 wickets.

Ronaldo scores again in Man Utd 3-0 win over Brentford L O N D O N, M AY 3 (AP): Cristiano Ronaldo continues to be the shining light in an otherwise disappointing season for Manchester United. Make that 18 goals in the English Premier League for the Portugal superstar after he converted a penalty that he earned himself in a 3-0 victory over Brentford on Monday. Ronaldo also had a goal disallowed at Old Trafford for a nar row offside as United saved one of its best performances of the season for its final home game. Bruno Fernandes and Raphael Varane _ with his first in English football _ were the other scorers. The victory kept alive — at least mathematically — sixth-placed United’s chance of finishing in the top four and qualifying for next season’s Champions League. United, though, has only two games remaining and is five points behind fourth-placed Arsenal and three behind Tottenham, with both rivals still having four to play.

Ronaldo, who has netted in each of his last four games, is third on the league’s list of top scorers behind Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah (22) and Tottenham’s Son Heungmin (19). And he’ll be back again next season, unlike some of the other players in United’s team. U n i t e d f a n s g ave s t a n d i n g o va t i o n s t o departing veterans Nemanja
Matic and Juan Mata as they were substituted on their final Old Trafford appearances. It was also the last home game in charge for interim manager Ralf Rangnick, who will be replaced by Erik ten Hag during the offseason. Monday marked a year since the postponement of United’s home match against Liverpool, when fans made clear their anger at the ownership of the
Glazer family in the wake of the European Super League debacle. S u p p o r t e r s h ave protested at each of United’s final three home games and the anti-Glazer sentiment was apparent before and during the victory against Brentford. It was the first match that Brentford had lost with Christian Eriksen in the team and he pulled the strings in the London club’s
first competitive match at Old Trafford since 1975. Anthony Elanga set the first goal in the ninth minute, scampering down the right and crossing for Fernandes to volley home. Ronaldo was proving a handful, forcing David Raya into an awkward save from a long-range free kick, then furiously claiming he should have had a penalty f o l l ow i n g M a d s B e c h Sorensen’s challenge. Then Ronaldo smartly flicked a pass into Mata, w h o l a s h e d n a r r ow ly wide of the near post on his first Premier League start of the season. The roles were reversed when Mata broke down the left and sent a low cross that Ronaldo squeezed past Raya. The provider and scorer celebrated together, only for the goal to be ruled out following a VAR review. United created breathing space in the 61st minute when Ronaldo was bundled over in the box by Rico Henry before sending Raya the wrong way in front of an elated Stretford End.
