The don’ts state-- avoid sharing linen, beddings, clothes, towels, among others, with people who have tested positive for the infection. The ministry advised not to wash soiled linen or laundry of patients and those of non-infected persons together, and avoid public events even if you only exhibit symptoms of the disease. to show solidarity with any genuine movement or organisation that would take the responsibility for demanding early political settlement. ACAUT thus urged upon all right-thinking public to participate in the August 5 public rally, called by the Nagaland People’s Action Committee (NPAC) to demand early settlement of the “Indo-Naga peace talks”, at Supermarket, Dimapur. ACAUT appealed to people to rise to the occasion at an important timeline of transition in the society, against the backdrop of surge of rising public movement in the form of Solidarity Walk, the proposed public rally of Eastern Nagaland People’s Organisation (ENPO) for

gust 5 rally. ACAUT reminded that it had been holding steadfast to the public declaration of October 31, 2013 and public outcry of “One Government One Tax” as an antidote to unabated taxation for which a High Powered Commission constituted by the government submitted its report. ACAUT said implementation of the report against corruption could not be completely fulfilled till the Government of India (GoI) expedited the “IndoNaga” political settlement without further delay. Further ACAUT reminded that it was also part and parcel of the Core Committee of Nagaland Tribal Hohos and Civil Organisations (CCNTHCO) along with other political

stood for “Solution before Election” in 2018. However, due to the intervention of then BJP in-charge of Northeast Ram Madhav, who mooted “Election for Solution”, ACAUT said election was subsequently held and that the ball was again in the court of the BJP on the issue of election in 2023. A C AU T a l s o r e called its New Year press statement, wherein it suggested public discussion on “Agreed positions” and “The competencies” (Framework Agreement) through apex tribal hohos, to be held with certain deadlines. In solidarity with the public rally called by Nagaland Public Action Committee (NPAC) at Super Market on August 5, 2022 at 10 am, Dimapur Chamber of Commerce and Industry (DCCI) has requested all the shops and business establishments within DCCI jurisdiction to down their shutters from 10a.m. till the conclusion of the rally. DCCI vice president V Shikuto Achumi also requested all the members of the business community to extend solidarity and support by taking part in the rally. Further, DCCI has appealed to the business community and the general public to compulsorily wear face masks while attending (Cont’d on p-8) the rally.

DDCF, DCCI extend support: Dimapur District Citizens’ Forum (DDCF) and Dimapur Chamber of Commerce and Industries (DCCI) have extended support to the proposed public rally being organized by NPAC to pressurise all parties involved in the negotiations for early settlement to the “Indo-Naga” political issue at the earliest. DDCF president Yibemo Kikon and DCCI acting president Shikuto also jointly appealed to all the business establishments under Dimapur district to down all the shutters from 10am till the rally was over on August 5, 2022. The two bodies also appealed to all the citizens of Dimapur district to cease all activities and participate in the rally.

Deliver what has been promised: NPAC to GoI D I M A P U R , AU G 3 (NPN): Nagaland People’s Action Committee (NPAC) has appealed to the Government of India (GoI) to demonstrate political will to deliver what it had promised time and again, to resolve the Naga political issue. In a statement, the Nagaland People’s Action Committee maintained that all civil society organisations (CSOs), tribal hohos and Core Committee of the Parliamentary Committee on Naga Political Issue have a clear stand– an early Naga political solution. Constituted by the CSOs and tribal hohos representing the people, Nagaland People’s Action Committee declared that it would work towards this consensus and pursue an early Naga political solution. NPAC said it expected full support of the tribal

hohos, CSOs and Parliamentary Committee towards the common cause and “stand firm on people’s voice so that the people in authority will not take us for a ride.” It pointed out that the people were seriously observing whether the Core Committee of Parliamentary Committee was walking the talk on the four-point resolution adopted on July 16, 2022. Meanwhile, NPAC said the public rally scheduled on August 5 at Supermarket area Dimapur was on the same page of the resolution and maintained that all concerned should support the public rally in letter and in spirit. It further maintained that the people on the ground wanted solution and were prepared to create a clear passage for peace and solution.

DIMAPUR, AUG 3 (NPN): To eliminate hazardous manual cleaning of sewers and septic tanks, the state government has ordered establishment of Responsible Sanitation Authorities (RSAs) and Sanitation Response Units (SRUs) at the district level in the state as per the “Prevention of Employment as Manual Scavengers and their Rehabilitation Act (PEMSRA) 2013”. road sealed for traffic. The barricades were later removed. “Delhi Police blocking the road to AICC Headquarters has become a norm rather than an exception! Why have they just done so is mysterious...,” Ramesh tweeted.

“The Congress is under siege. Delhi police has surrounded our HQs, and homes of INC President and ex-President. This is the worst form of vendetta politics. We will not submit! We will not be silenced! We will continue to raise our voice against injustices and failures of Modi Sarkar!,” he said in another tweet. A senior Delhi police officer said, “We have received inputs from our special branch that some protesters might gather at the Congress office situated on Akbar Road. So, as a preventive measure, we have put barricades and deputed our person-

nel to avoid any untoward situation.” In a tweet in Hindi, the Congress said, “The voice of truth will not be afraid of police guards. Gandhi’s followers will fight and win from this darkness.” Sealing the office of the National Herald, bringing the Congress HQs under police guards show both the “fear and frustration of the dictator”, the party said, adding that questions of inflation and unemployment will still be asked. On Tuesday, the ED raided the head office of the National Herald newspaper and 11 other locations as part of its probe.

DIMAPUR, AUG 3 (NPN): In an effort to clarify its stand on Naga solution vis-a-vis election, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) legislators of Nagaland have assured the Naga people of their unwavering stand and support for an early solution to the “Indo-Naga” political issue, that was acceptable and honourable. In a statement, state BJP legislators maintained that they have “always remained firm” in their commitment to an early Naga solution. The BJP legislators also reaffirmed that the party continued to remain focused on this stand without any compromise adding, “it would be a grave mistake to think otherwise by anyone.” The BJP legislators also maintained that the aspirations of the people and final solution were

GoI recognised unique history of State gets `377.50 cr PDRD grant Naga independence in FA: Tuccu Spl. Correspondent

DIMAPUR, AUG 3 (NPN): NSCN (I-M) chairman/yaruiwo Q Tuccu on Wednesday said that in the Framework Agreement (FA), Government of India recognised the “unique history of the Naga independence and the unique situation.” Delivering his speech to mark seventh anniversary of the signing of the Framework Agreement with government of India, Tuccu explained that unique history meant that the Nagas had never been a part of the Union of India, while the unique situation meant that the Naga issue was political

and not law and order problem of India. He said the declared Naga independence should be recognised by other countries, particularly by the “aggressor States”. He asserted that sovereignty was “our” inherent right and that the Nagas were a sovereign people. He however stressed that it must be recognised by other nation States. As the FA states that “Sovereignty lies with the people”, Tuccu said the sovereignty of the Nagas lay with Naga people and sovereignty of India lay with the Indian people. According to Tuccu, in

the competency, the agreement states “In the matter of her own affairs as mutually agreed upon, Nagalim shall be sovereign.” He accused the interlocutors of Government of India of making Naga flag and constitution an issue when it was known to all that the flag and constitution were component parts of the recognised sovereignty and unique history. The NSCN (I-M) chairman further reiterated the historical fact that Nagas had never been a part of the Union of India either by consent or by conquest. (Full text on p-6)

NESO threatens stir over CAA amid Shah’s implementation plan G U WA H AT I , AU G 3 (PTI): The North East Students’ Organisation (NESO) on Wednesday termed the Citizenship (Amendment) Act communal and against the indigenous people of the region, demanding that it be repealed immediately. of “supreme priority”, and that the party was “ever ready to walk extra mile” to contribute in ushering a lasting solution that would “ultimately take us to the path of permanent peace, faster development and a brighter future to our people.” They also said the Naga cause transcended to all others and reassured the people of Nagaland that BJP was “unfazed in its resolve for early solution.” They also reasserted that the role of legislators was that of a facilitator in order that the entire negotiation process rested with the negotiating parties in order to culminate into a final solution. BJP Nagaland has, therefore, urged the negotiating parties to expedite the process for final solution at the earliest.

“We will not accept the CAA. The AASU and others had filed a petition against the law in the Supreme Court, where no hearing has taken place since 2020. We will keep on with our protest against CAA if

it is implemented,” NESO chairman Samuel B Jyrwa told reporters. NESO advisor Samujjal Kumar Bhattacharjya described the act as “anti-indigenous, antiNortheast, anti-people and communal”. “CAA must go.

There is no second thought about it..,” he added. The framing of rules for the CAA will pave the way for its implementation. Passed by Parliament in December 2019, the Act is yet to be rolled out due to

the absence of rules. The government has cited the outbreak of the pandemic for not framing them so far. “We also demand the full withdrawal of the draconian AFSPA from the entire Northeast,” he said. “Because of the AFSPA, the Supreme Court has not given prosecution permission yet in the Oting killings of Nagaland. This is an injustice to the people of Northeast,” he added. NESO chairman announced that with all its demands, the member organisations will hold protests in all the state headquarters on August 17.

Par panel questions govt on MGNREGA implementation NEW DELHI, AUG 3 (PTI): A parliamentary panel has stated that the situation is not so “‘rosy” on ground zero as depicted by the government on the implementation of MGNREGA as there are issues like fake job cards and money changing hands for showing an inflated list of beneficiaries. The report was tabled by the parliamentary standing committee on Rural Development on Wednesday in Lok Sabha. In its response, the Ministry of Rural Development stated that all complaints received in the

ministry are forwarded to the state governments and UTs concerned for taking appropriate action. The panel said the scheme acquires paramount importance in terms of monitoring and surveillance “so that even the single penny of taxpayers’ account does not get misused through the nexus of unscrupulous and conniving officials of Gram Panchayats.” “The situation is not so ‘rosy’ as depicted by the Department of Rural Development in reflecting through (Cont’d on p-8) its data K Y M C

MPs participate in bike rally from Red Fort

NEW DELHI, AUG 3 ( P T I ) : S e v e r a l M P s, including central ministers and young parliamentarians, on Wednesday took part in a bike rally in Delhi that originated from the historic Red Fort to pay tribute to the freedom fighters as part of the Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav. Tricolours in the streets and MPs on wheels, the event sought to heighten the sense of patriotism among citizens while sending out a social message. Union Minister for Information and Broadcasting Anurag Thakur, who also rode a bike from the Mughal-era Red Fort as part of the event, shared his thoughts with reporters near India Gate. “ Va r i o u s c e n t r a l ministers, MPs and young leaders came together, and started the bike rally from the historic Red Fort to give the message that ‘we are paying our tribute to our freedom fighters and

remembering them’, and also to assure that in this Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav, we will work to maintain the unity and integrity of the nation, and enhance the glory of India,” he said. T h a k u r, a f o u r t h term Lok Sabha MP from Hamir pur in Himachal Pradesh, also holds the portfolio of Youth Affairs and Sports. The ‘Har Ghar Tiranga’ bike rally came a day after the Ministry of Culture hosted a mega

‘Tiranga Utsav’ event on Tuesday to mark the Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav. Union Home Minister Amit Shah during the ‘Tiranga Utsav’ appealed to the citizens to participate in ‘Har Ghar Tiranga’ campaign with great enthusiasm to tell the world that India has “risen from slumber” and swiftly moving forward under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi while being on course to become a “great” power.

BJP takes dig at Cong tricolour profile picture with Nehru NEW DELHI, AUG 3 (PTI): The BJP took a dig at the Congress on Wednesday over its leaders displaying a picture of Jawaharlal Nehru holding the national flag in their social media profiles, saying Rahul Gandhi should look outside his family and allow party members to use their photo with the Tricolour. Asked about it at a press conference, BJP spokesperson Sambit Patra said, “No issues. At least the Tiranga is coming up”. He then went on to add, “I believe there should not be dynastic politics in ever y issue... They have displayed the picture of their leader who was the country’s first prime minister. The Tricolour belongs to the poorest of the poor and to 135 crore Indians.” “Anyone can hold the tricolour and put it in their DP (display picture)... His (Gandhi’s) family has been in politics from the beginning. I feel Rahul Gandhi should give others a chance. It will be very good if his party workers display their picture with the Tricolour,” Patra added.

The country is honoured when an ordinary person, the last person in the queue, holds the national flag high and lauds the nation, he said. Patra also cited the election of Droupadi Murmu as the country’s first tribal President in this context. A day after Prime Minister Narendra Modi and several BJP leaders made the Tricolour their profile picture on social media, Congress leaders and the party’s official handles put a photograph of Nehru with the tricolour as their display picture on Twitter and other platforms. In the press conference, the BJP spokesperson

asked all parties, including those in the opposition, to join the government’s “Har Ghar Tiranga” programme, saying programmes like this are beyond politics. Ever yone should support it, he said, adding the Congress and other parties should also contribute. With the government organising a ‘Tiranga bike rally’ earlier in the day, Patra noted that Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu had flagged it off and said his office is not associated with any politics. Though the parliamentary affairs m i n i s t r y, w h i c h h a d organised it in association with the Culture Ministry, said it had sent an invite to

every MP, it was largely the BJP parliamentarian who joined the exercise. “ L e t ’s b e I n d i a n and let’s celebrate India through the Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav and Har Ghar Tiranga,” he said, urging the opposition to not politicise these programmes. With the opposition criticising the amendment in the Flag Code, Patra said the changes were necessary so that the national flag can be manufactured on a large scale and reach every household. For the first time since Independence, a programme to hoist the national flag at such a scale has been launched, he noted.

He said the JCP report on the Personal Data protection bill had identified many issues that were relevant but beyond the scope of a modern Digital Privacy law. “Privacy is a fundamental right of Indian citizens & a Trillion-dollar Digital Economy requires Global std Cyber laws,” he said in another tweet. The withdrawn data protection Bill had also proposed the setting up of a Data Protection Authority. It had also proposed to specify the flow and usage of personal data, protect the rights of individuals whose personal data are processed, as it works out the framework for the cross-border transfer, accountability of entities processing data, and moots remedies for unauthorised and harmful processing.

NEW DELHI, AUG 3 (PTI): The government on Wednesday withdrew the Personal Data Protection Bill from Lok Sabha and said it will come out with a “set of fresh legislations” that will fit into the comprehensive legal framework. “The government will bring a set of new legislation for a comprehensive legal framework for the digital economy,” IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, who moved for the withdrawal of the Bill in the House, told PTI. The government would hold a wide public consultation before putting the new legislation to Parliament, sources said. According to sources, the Bill could be replaced by more than one bill, dealing with privacy and cyber security and the government may bring the new set of bills in the Winter Session of Parliament. The gover nment circulated among members a statement, containing reasons for withdrawal of the Bill, which was introduced on 11 December 2019 and was referred to the Joint Committee of the Houses for examination. The report of the JCP was presented to Lok Sabha in December 2021. The withdrawal of the Bill was made part of the supplementary agenda of Lok Sabha this afternoon. The withdrawn Bill had proposed restrictions on the use of personal data without the explicit consent of citizens. It had also sought to provide the government with powers to give exemptions to its probe agencies from the provisions of the Act, a move that was strongly opposed by the opposition MPs who had filed their dissent notes. According to the statement circulated to Lok Sabha members on Wednesday, the 2019 Bill was deliberated in great detail by the JCP, which proposed 81 amendments

Emerging sports power hub

T

hough the entire north east comprises just 45 million, which is 3.76 % of India’s population.; yet in recent years sportspersons from the region have made India proud. In the current Common Wealth Games in England, four of India’s first eight of nine medals during the first four days have come from athletes from the Northeast. This is enough proof of the importance of the region from Indian sport’s perspective. So far, as on August 2, Indian athletes have won nine medals, three gold, three silvers and three bronze, at the Commonwealth Games 2022. Mirabai Chanu from Manipur was the first Indian woman to win a gold in the Women’s 49kg weightlifting at CWG 2022 while Jeremy Lalrinnunga from Mizoram was the first Indian man to clinch top podium in Men’s 67kg weightlifting at Birmingham. Shushila Likmabam also from Manipur won Silver at women’s 48 kg judo. Bindyarani Devi from Manipur created a Games record by lifting 116 kg in the clean and jerk after a personal best of 86 kg in the snatch section and secured a silver in the women’s 55 kg category. While it was Dingko Singh and Kunjarani Devi who were flagbearers from the north east in the 1990s; they were followed by boxers Mary Kom, Sarita Devi and Lovlina Borgohain, Mirabai Chanu, Bindyarani Devi and Jeremy Lalrinnuga in weightlifting and Sushila Devi in judo. The North Eastern states of India are home to some of India’s most recognised international players. Just to name a few, M.C. Mary Kom– 2012 Olympics bronze medallist and a five-time world amateur-boxing champion, footballer Baichung Bhutia, boxer L. Sarita Devi, silver medallist at the 2014 Glasgow Commonwealth Games, Jayanta Talukdar, Gold Medalist and Arjuna Award winner, weightlifter K. Sanjita Chanu, who won gold at the 2014 Glasgow Commonwealth Games and Mirabai Chanu, who broke the national record to win the World Weightlifting championships are just some of the renowned names. Kunjarani Devi also from Manipur is one of the greatest women weightlifters, not just in India but the world. By sheer hard work and determination, she has broken all records, winning a staggering 50 plus international and national medals. Kunjarani has won 3 gold, 31 silver and 12 bronze medals in international competitions. She has been rated by the International Weightlifting Federation as one of the top 100 greats of all time. Northeast Sportspersons over the years have developed a habit making it big at national and international sports events. A positive sports culture in the region has yielded numerous medal winners and world champions who have stamped their authority on the global stage. Sports lovers in the north east can proudly say that it is the un-official sports region of India while Manipur and followed by Assam are states that have produced world class material. The rising sports stars are inspiring many youngsters and their families to come out of poverty through sports. The Khelo India program provides funds for conducting sports events in two age groups of under 14 and under 17. Earlier under Rajiv Gandhi Khel Abhiyan (RGKA) and the Urban Sports Infrastructure Scheme (USIS), the schemes had encouraged mass participation of both boys and girls in sports and creation of sports infrastructure facilities.

DailyDevotion The Compelling Purpose of God He…said to them, “Behold, we are going up to Jerusalem…” —Luke 18:31 Jerusalem, in the life of our Lord, represents the place where He reached the culmination of His Father’s will. Jesus said, “I do not seek My own will but the will of the Father who sent Me” (John 5:30). Seeking to do “the will of the Father” was the one dominating concern throughout our Lord’s life. And whatever He encountered along the way, whether joy or sorrow, success or failure, He was never deterred from that purpose. “…He steadfastly set His face to go to Jerusalem…” (Luke 9:51). The greatest thing for us to remember is that we go up to Jerusalem to fulfill God’s purpose, not our own. In the natural life our ambitions are our own, but in the Christian life we have no goals of our own. We talk so much today about our decisions for Christ, our determination to be Christians, and our decisions for this and that, but in the New Testament the only aspect that is brought out is the compelling purpose of God. “You did not choose Me, but I chose you…” (John 15:16). We are not taken into a conscious agreement with God’s purpose— we are taken into God’s purpose with no awareness of it at all. We have no idea what God’s goal may be; as we continue, His purpose becomes even more and more vague. God’s aim appears to have missed the mark, because we are too nearsighted to see the target at which He is aiming. At the beginning of the Christian life, we have our own ideas as to what God’s purpose is. We say, “God means for me to go over there,” and, “God has called me to do this special work.” We do what we think is right, and yet the compelling purpose of God remains upon us. The work we do is of no account when compared with the compelling purpose of God. It is simply the scaffolding surrounding His work and His plan. “He took the twelve aside…” (Luke 18:31). God takes us aside all the time. We have not yet understood all there is to know of the compelling purpose of God.

NAGALAND POST, DIMAPUR THURSDAY, AUGUST 4, 2022

Post-mortem

Speech of NSCN (I-M) Yaruiwo on 7th anniv of signing of historic FA

My dear countrymen, I join with you on this impor tant day of commemorating the historic Framework Agreement signed between the Government of India and the National Socialist Council of Nagalim on August 3, 2015. I give my revolutionary salute to all those martyrs who have given their best for the cause of Nagalim for Christ. 75 years ago, our fathers declared the Naga National Independence on the 14th of August 1947. And it was informed to the United Nations (UN), and all the Embassies in Delhi. But before long, the Indian and Burmese Governments sent hundreds of thousands of their troops to occupy our land in total violations of the International law against which, the Naga people have been resisting from all fronts till date. The declared Naga independence should be recognized by other countries particularly by the aggressor-states. The Framework Agreement says that the unique his-

tory of the Naga independence and the unique situation is recognized by the Government of India. By unique history, it means the Nagas have never been a part of the Union of India. By unique situation, it means it is political, not law and order problem of India. We say sovereignty is our inherent right and that the Nagas are a sovereign people. However, it must be recognized by other nation-states. The Framework Agreement says, “Sovereignty lies with the people.” Therefore, the sovereignty of the Nagas lies with the Naga people and sovereignty of India lies with the Indian people. In the competency it says, “In the matter of her own affairs as mutually agreed upon, Nagalim shall be sovereign.” The interlocutors of the Government of India are making the Naga flag and constitution an issue. It is known to all that the flag and the constitution are component parts of the recognised sovereignty and unique history. We truly say we are

Nagas, not Indians, but the Government of India did not respect the Naga national identity. The Nagas must be a recognized entity. The Naga national entity is now recognized by the Government of India. The Framework Agreement speaks of this. I reiterate the historical fact that the Nagas have never been a part of the Union of India either by consent or by conquest. Indeed, in 1950, the Indian Constituent Assembly invited the Nagas to join the Union of India, but it was rejected by the Naga people for the reason that merger of Nagalim with the Union of India is but suicidal for them. Acknowledging this fact, the government of India proposed ‘co-existence of the two entities sharing sovereign power.’ It means co-existing with India without forgoing the national rights of the Nagas. The Nagas cannot merge with Union of India or any other Union, nonetheless the Nagas andthe Indians cannot stay apart from each other

because interdependent relationship among peoples and nations is the law of necessity. Coexistence of the Nagas and the Indians is a natural necessity, because no individual or nation exists in total isolation from others. The Nagas say we are the owner of our land, whereas the Government of India claims that Nagalim is an integral part of India. But there is neither history nor any agreement in support of that claim. This diametrically opposite stands taken by the two peoples make them fight for decades. Finally, the Government of India acknowledges that the Nagas are the owner of their land and everything be it on the surface and beneath. The Nagas have been living in a compact area covering 120 thousand square kilometers from the very beginning under the political system of village-states. The British Imperialist intruded into the Naga country only in 1832. The British imperialist forces forcibly occupied a part of Naga territory, but the

rest part remains as free as ever. Under the colonial policy of divide and rule, the British power divided the Naga country into many parts and it was further divided by the Indian and the Burmese states and placed them in different administrative units against the will of the Nagas. The politics of integration of all Naga territories under one political roof has been one of the central points of the movement. After series of talks between the Government of India and NSCN, it was mutually agreed that the integration of all the Naga areas is the ‘legitimate right of the Nagas’ and that in keeping with the principle it will be finalized through political process at the earliest as mutually agreed upon. In the meantime, as agreed upon political institutions will be instituted in the Naga areas in the so-called states of Manipur, Assam and Ar unachal Pradesh in addition to the present Nagaland state, which

will be transitional to the final goal. The gover nment of India proposed PAN NAGA HOHO, a cultural institution which embraces the Nagas of all Naga areas. It will deal with the culture, custom and tradition, literature, social and interest of the Nagas, which was mutually agreed. We b e l i e v e t h i s Framework Agreement which says, ‘It will provide for an enduring inclusive new relationship of peaceful coexistence of the two entities’ will be certainly a bridge between the two peoples, not a wall; it will also be the strong tower they have been looking for. This Framework Agreement nullifies the colonial culture of ‘forced marriage and forced Union’, and this agreement will bring the two confronting peoples closer than ever before. The two negotiating parties agreed that this is the meeting point of the Nagas and the Indians. KUKNALIM! Q.Tuccu Yaruiwo of the GPRN

But there is no question of betrayal; Rio had to resigned because Dr Jamir claimed that “ the Naga movement initiated by A.Z Phizo had reached a dead end “ in his contentious booklet ‘the bedrock of Naga society ‘ and will not withdraw it despite request made to him. Also since Naga movement is a political issue, the booklet drew sharp criticism and condemnation from the Naga people from every nook and corner of Nagaland. Atlast the Naga people themselves denounced the leadership of Dr Jamir with this booklet, “the Bedrock of Naga Society” After separating from S C Jamir. Neiphiu Rio renewed

his regional political party (the Cock Party) and By the Grace of God; He was able to form the Naga People’s government with the Cock Party. Ever since, He became the Chief Minister in 2003. Things took a positive change for the Naga people in the right direction, both over ground and under ground. Peace and development came in leaps and bounds. Rio followed a policy of Equi- Closeness- as opposed to Dr Jamir’s equi-distant policy with the Naga National Groups and this is how talks is continuing till now in the right direction to bring a respectable negotiated settlement to the vexed Naga political problem. To be frank Rio is all heart for the best of the

Naga people. His goal is not just the Chief Minister’s chair but for a peaceful developed Nagaland. That is why despite his party winning a comfortable majority with 38 MLAs in 2013 Election and the Government running smoothly, He vacated his seat and went to Delhi as an MP. all for the interest of the Naga people. But unfortunately things would take unfortunate turns in state politics in his absence and instability and weak leadership would become the hallmark of the government. So, purposefully Nephiu Rio was requested to come back by the Naga People and the People of 11th Northern Angami II Assembly Constituency respecting the desires of the public elected him unopposed to the Legisla-

Kyoto, Japan, in December 1997. This makes us wonder where we have gone wrong. It is indeed true to say that during the last 100 years humans have wrecked the earth so much that nature is turning back on them. We hear constant talk of environment planning and tackling Climate Change effects, but find most governments wanting in fulfilling their pledges committed at different environment foras, such as COP26 and other international bodies. The basic requirement is that we’ll have to change our lifestyles too, to cope with the climate challenges. We’ll have to change the way we are constr ucting our commercial and residential buildings, all clad in either glass or aluminium cladding requiring more heat intensive mechanisms to

maintain cooler temperature. In hotels worldwide it is a normal practice to maintain the building temperature at 17 degrees Celsius, why can’t we make it a more reasonable 21 degrees Celsius? In addition we also need to change our style of construction using a judicious mix of stone, cement and wood, not just relying on one particular product, besides ensuring less usage of wood. If we humans don’t act now instead of just preaching and making hollow promises then we could just look forward to our own extinction much earlier than envisaged by nature. Repair the potholes near City Tower

Sir,

City Tower is the most important landmark of the town and the sight of potholes in the road near the tower is an ugly sight, especially for tourists or visitors to the state. With no immediate forecast of heavy rains, the concerned authority should take up repair works before the potholes become larger. They say a stitch in times saves nine. The authorities should act fast and ensure the roads are repaired along with other roads that have developed potholes. Mhathung Kikon, Dimapur newspaper nor that of the Editor in any manner.

Noisy protests in LS over J’khand MLAs cash case: Bengal CID ‘restrained’ by Delhi Police National Herald raid

Members in the Lok Sabha during ongoing Monsoon Session of Parliament, in New Delhi, Wednesday. (PTI)

NEW DELHI, AUG 3 (AGENCIES): Lok Sabha witnessed noisy scenes and abrupt adjournments amid protests by opposition members over the raid at National Herald newspaper premises in connection with a money laundering probe. In a rare gesture of protest, Congress president Sonia Gandhi also came to the well of the House briefly to join her party MPs who were protesting against the “misuse of central investi-

gative agencies” against opposition leaders, reports The New Indian Express. While members belonging to the Congress and the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) stood in the well of the House, raising slogans like “ED, Modi down down” and “Narendra Modi jawab do”, Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) members and a few from Trinamool Congress (TMC) stood near their seats in solidarity.

Two Congress MPs, Kodikkunnil Suresh and Manickam Tagore, gave notices of adjournment motion to discuss the issue. Tagore’s notice said the party wanted the House to discuss immediately the “attitude of the Central government misusing the Enforcement Directorate to suppress the Opposition party and its leaders, especially the activities of the ED to defame the values of the National Herald newspaper, and to direct the government to refrain from such activities”. Suresh said he wanted to discuss the “raids at the National Herald office in Delhi by the Enforcement Directorate” as it is “yet another instance of the vengeful politicisation of Central agencies by the BJP-led NDA government in its attempt to throttle dissent and opposition voices by acting upon fake and trumped-up charges”.

KO L K ATA , AU G 3 (PTI): West Bengal CID claimed that Delhi Police on Wednesday morning allegedly detained and restrained its team from conducting a search operation in the national capital. The alleged incident took place when the CID sleuths were conducting a raid at a property belonging to a man closely associated to one of the three Jharkhand MLAs arrested in a cash seizure case. CID is describing this man as an accused in the case, besides the arrested legislators. Four CID officers – an inspector and ASI each and two SIs -- were detained and restrained from conducting search at the man’s residence in South Campus Police Station area in New Delhi despite having a court warrant, a senior CID officer said. The West Bengal government is sending a team of three senior officers -- one ADG and two IG rank officers -- to Delhi, another officer in the state Home Department said.

West Bengal police personnel detain three Jharkhand Congress MLAs after a huge amount of cash was found in their vehicle on Saturday. ( PTI File Photo)

Three Congress MLAs from Jharkhand -- Irfan Ansari, Rajesh Kachchap and Naman Bixal Kongari – were arrested by West Bengal Police after over Rs 49 lakh in cash was seized from a car in which they were travelling. “On Wednesday morning, a team of West Bengal Criminal Investigation Department (CID) officers was restrained by Delhi Police from carrying out a search operation at a property of an accused person closely associated with an arrested

MLA in the cash seizure case despite having a court warrant,” the senior CID official told PTI. “They had gone to the national capital in connection with the probe into the cash seizure case. This restraining is completely illegal,” he said. The CID claimed that preventing the sleuths from carrying out the raid will “lead to the disappearance of crucial evidence by the suspects” and held the Delhi Police responsible for that. “The case involves sei-

zure of huge cash from 3 MLAs of Jharkhand. Detaining & preventing the CID WB team to conduct lawful search will lead to disappearance of crucial evidence by the suspects responsibility of which will lie on the DP officers who prevented the search. @ CPDelhi,” the CID tweeted. On Wednesday morning, CID sleuths arrested businessman Mahendra Agarwal, who had allegedly supplied the seized cash to the three MLAs, from in

front of his residence off EM Bypass, an officer said. The CID has claimed that the cash seized from the three MLAs was delivered to them by Agarwal through hawala. Incidentally, on Tuesday, the agency detectives had raided Agarwal’s office at Lalbazar area of Kolkata and seized Rs 3 lakh in cash, several bank passbooks and around 250 silver coins. Agarwal had been absconding since the arrest of the three MLAs. The Congress, which is a part of the JMM-led government in Jharkhand, alleged that the BJP was trying to topple the Hemant Soren government by offering Rs 10 crore each and a ministerial berth to MLAs. The party has also dragged in the name of Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma in the alleged conspiracy, but these allegations were rubbished by the BJP, which claimed that the grand old party was trying to hide its own corruption after the cash was found.

Immediately after his resignation, Bishnoi challenged Congress leader Bhupinder Singh Hooda to contest from Adampur. “Hooda had challenged me that Kuldeep Bishnoi should first resign (before joining the BJP).

I challenge him, he had been a chief minister for 10 years, let him contest from Adampur against me or my son,” he said. Bishnoi was expelled from all party positions by the Congress soon after he cross-voted in the Rajya Sabha polls in June.

“In the inter view, Zoish nods in assent when Vijayakar asks her if the Silly Souls restaurant is hers. “Let me introduce you to a very, very young entrepreneur,” Vijayakar says. “This is Zoish Irani. Only the debutant LIC, which came out with its IPO last fiscal, was ranked higher than Reliance among the Indian corporates.

nounced multiple military exercises around the island, parts of which will enter Taiwanese waters, and issued a series of harsh statements after the delegation touched down Tuesday night in the Taiwanese capital, Taipei. Taiwan decried the planned actions, saying they violated the island’s sovereignty. “Such an act equals to sealing off Taiwan by air and sea, such an act covers our country’s territory and territorial waters, and

severely violates our country’s territorial sovereignty,” Capt. Jian-chang Yu said at a briefing by the National Defense Ministry. The Chinese military exercises, including live fire, are to start Thursday and be the largest aimed at Taiwan since 1995, when China fired missiles in a large-scale exercise to show its displeasure at a visit by then-Taiwanese President Lee Teng-hui to the US. Putin’s rumoured girlfriend hit with latest US sanctions WASHINGTON, AUG 3 (AP): A new round of US sanctions targeting Russian elites includes a woman named in news reports as Vladimir Putin’s longtime romantic partner. The Treasury Department said Tuesday that the government has frozen the visa of Alina Kabaeva, an Olympic gymnast in her youth and former member of the state Duma, and imposed other property restrictions. The department said she is also head of a Russian national media company that promotes Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Critics of the Kremlin and imprisoned Russian rights campaigner Alexey Navalny have been calling for sanctions against Kabaeva, saying her news outlet took the lead in portraying Western commentary on the invasion as a disinfor-

Also named in Treasury’s latest sanctions package is Andrey Grigoryevich Guryev, an oligarch who owns the Witanhurst estate, a 25-bedroom mansion that is the second-largest estate in London after Buckingham Palace. His USD 120 million yacht, the Alfa

However, other members of Congress have visited Taiwan in the past year. Tsai, thanking Pelosi for her decades of support for Taiwan, presented the speaker with a civilian honor, the Order of the Propitious Clouds. China’s response has been loud and has come on multiple fronts: diplomatic, economic and military. Shortly after Pelosi landed Tuesday night, China announced live-fire drills that reportedly started that night, as well as the four-day exercises starting Thursday. The People’s Liberation Army Air Force also flew a contingent of 21 war planes Tuesday night, including fighter jets, toward Taiwan. Chinese Vice Foreign Minister Xie Feng also summoned the U.S. ambassador in Beijing, Nicholas Burns, to convey the country’s protests the same night.

C O L O M B O, AU G 3 (PTI): Sri Lanka’s newly-elected President Ranil Wickremesinghe on Wednesday said his government is preparing a national economic policy for the next 25 years to transform the crisis-hit country into a modern and competitive export economy. Presenting his government’s policy statement during the third session of Parliament, President Wickremesinghe once again invited the political parties to form an all-party government to overcome the current economic crisis as the House reconvened after a seven-day adjournment. “I took over a country that was in disaster. Severe economic crisis on one side, massive public opposition on the other,” said Wickremesinghe, who was elected President by lawmakers on July 20 - the first such occasion since 1978.

The 73-year-old President was appointed for the rest of the term of Gotabaya Rajapaksa who fled the country and resigned on July 13 in the face of a popular uprising against his government for mismanaging the island nation’s economy. “Today, we are facing an unprecedented situation that our country has never faced in recent history. We are in great danger. The country could extricate and be secured from that danger, only if we all face this challenge together as one people,” he said, urging political parties to form an all-party government. “I once again request all parties representing the people in this Parliament to unite in the formation of an All-Party Government. I respectfully extend the hand of friendship to all of you,” he said. Sri Lanka has seen months of mass unrest over

The 48-year-old suspect was identified by his surname Liu in a police statement. No further details of the Wednesday morning attack in the province’s Anfu County were given in the brief statement. China upgraded security at schools following a spate of of deadly attacks in recent years attributed largely to people bearing grudges against society or who had unidentified mental illnesses. China does not allow private gun ownership, so most such attacks are carried out with knives, homemade explosives or gasoline bombs. practice good situational awareness when travelling abroad, it added. Worldwide cautions provide US citizens with general information regarding terrorist activities, political violence, and criminal activity that occur abroad, as well as specific recommendations on how to prepare for possible contingencies. The Department of State remains concerned about the continued threat of terrorist attacks, demonstrations, and other violent actions against US citizens and interests overseas, it said. “The Department of State believes there is a higher potential for antiAmerican violence given the

death of Ayman al-Zawahiri on July 31, 2022,” it warned. Current information suggests that terrorist organisations continue to plan terrorist attacks against US interests in multiple regions across the globe. These attacks may employ a wide variety of tactics including suicide operations, assassinations, kidnappings, hijackings, and bombings, the advisory added. It asked US citizens abroad to monitor the local news and maintain contact with the nearest US Embassy or Consulate. It also asked travellers to enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) to receive security messages and to make it easier to locate them in an emergency. It was initially planned that the voting process would have allowed members to choose whether to vote by post or online and then, if they changed their minds, use the alternative method to cancel out their previous vote. But after the advice from the government’s spies, the party headquarters decided to make changes to “enhance security around the ballot process”.

the worst economic crisis, with the government declaring bankruptcy in mid-April by refusing to honour its international debt. In his address, Wickremesinghe said Sri Lanka needs long-term solutions in order to overcome difficulties. “A strong foundation needs to be laid as not to repeat this kind of economic crisis in our country. The economy should be modernised. Economic stability should be established and transformed into a competitive export economy. In this context, we are now preparing the

necessary reports, plans, rules and regulations, laws and programmes,” he told lawmakers. Wickremesinghe said his government had initiated negotiations with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) on a four-year programme and had commenced the finalisation of a debt restructuring plan. “We would submit this plan to the IMF in the near future, and negotiate with the countries who provided loan assistance. Subsequently negotiations with private creditors would also begin to arrive at a consensus,” he said. Wickremesinghe said that after examining the situation in depth, his government is preparing a National Economic Policy for the next 25 years that lays the foundation for a social

market economic system, securing development for the poor and underprivileged groups and encouraging small and medium entrepreneurs. “Our aim is to create a surplus in the primary budget by the year 2025. Our effort is to raise the economic growth rate to a stable stage, in order to establish a solid economic foundation by the year 2026. Currently, public debt is 140 per cent of GDP. Our plan is to bring this down to less than 100 per cent by the year 2032. “If we build the country, the nation and the economy through the national economic policy, we would be able to become a fully developed country by the year 2048, when we celebrate the 100th anniversary of independence,” he said.

In Taipei she remained calm but defiant. “Today the world faces a choice between democracy and autocracy,” she said in a short speech during a meeting with Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen. “America’s determination to preserve democracy, here in Taiwan and around the world, remains ironclad.” China, which claims Taiwan as its territory and opposes any engagement by Taiwanese officials with foreign governments, an-

India beat West Indies by 7 wickets in 3rd T20I

Suryakumar Yadav who completed the feat in the previous T20I, was the last to get to the landmark. However, by completing 50 T20I wickets, Hardik Pandya also completed a double of 500 runs and 50 wickets in T20Is, becoming the 11th men’s player and 30th overall to the feat. Pandya has a total of 806 T20I runs. The only other Indian to achieve this rare double in T20Is is Deepti Sharma, who currently has 65 T20I

wickets and 521 runs. Among the men’s players to get to this double, Hardik is the latest to make his T20I debut, having first played for India in 2016, according to ICC. Pandya has been in good form with the ball this year in limited-overs cricket. He has eight wickets in T20Is and six in ODIs with two four-wicket hauls. In St Kitts on Tuesday, Pandya bowled a spell of 4-0-19-1 to restrict the West Indies. Importantly, he drew the breakthrough for India after the West Indies openers put on a half-century stand. West Indies skipper Nicholas Pooran rued the fact that his bowlers couldn’t make early breakthroughs. “I felt like we had to get early wickets and we didn’t get early wickets. I felt like we should have dragged it back early in the power-play but unfortunately, we couldn’t get that wicket,” said Pooran. “At the (halfway stage

of the game) we felt like we had enough. India bowled well... they used the pitch really good. The wicket was a bit on the slower side and we felt it would be difficult to keep scoring on it. Again, if we had gotten early wickets it would have been a

different game.” Brief scores: West Indies 164/5 in 20 overs (Kyle Mayers 73, Bhuvneshwar Kumar 2/35) lost to India 165/3 in 19 overs (Suryakumar Yadav 76, Rishabh Pant 33 not out) by seven wickets.

BASSETERRE (ST KITTS), AUG 3 (IANS): Suryakumar Yadav finally succeeded at the top of the order after two successive below-par scores as India defeated the West Indies by seven wickets in the third T20 International at Warner Park to take a 2-1 lead in the five-match series. On a day when the visitors had a major injury scare with Rohit Sharma retiring hurt while batting due to a back spasm, Suryakumar took off smashing a 44ball 76 as India overhauled West Indies’ score of 164/5 for the loss of just three wicket and an over to spare. All-rounder Hardik Pandya, while not quite contributing much with the bat or ball, however achieved the rare double of 500 runs and 50 wickets. CWG: India settle for silver in badminton; lifter Lovepreet claims bronze

BIRMINGHAM, AUG 3 (PTI/IANS): Kidambi Srikanth came up with an underwhelming performance as India succumbed 1-3 to Malaysia and settled for a silver in the mixed team badminton event at the Commonwealth Games here on Tuesday. Srikanth lost to lowerranked Tze Yong Ng in three games to put the defending champions on the backfoot in the final. PV Sindhu did what was expected out of her in the women’s singles while the men’s doubles pairing of Satwik Sairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty went down in the opening doubles. With the win, Malaysia regained the title they had lost to India four years ago in Gold Coast. For India to retain gold, a lot depended on the outcome of the men’s doubles tie featuring Rankireddy and Shetty, and, the Olympic bronze medallists duo of Teng Fong Aaron Chia and Wooi Yik Soh. The women’s doubles and mixed doubles were India’s weaker links and the team relied on men’s doubles and the two singles to get the job done.

The opening contest was full of long and winding rallies but Reddy and Shetty lost majority of them, failing to keep pace with the ultra attacking Malaysian pair. For a change, the Malaysian crowd made more noise than the Indians, providing a further push to Chia and Soh. After a tough battle, the Malaysians won 21-18, 21-15 to put their team 1-0 up In the women’s singles, two-time Olympic medallist Sindhu was ex-

pected to win comfortably but the 60-th ranked Goh Jin Wei made life very tough for the world number 7. Sindhu led 11-6 in the first game but Goh looked a different player after the interval. CWG: Boxers Nitu, Hussamuddin reach semis, assured of medal

Nitu

Hussamuddin Mohamad

BIRMINGHAM, AUG 3 (IANS): Indian boxers Nitu and Hussamuddin Mohamad assured themselves at least a medal in the Commonwealth Games as they reached the semifinals in their respective weight divisions, overcoming their quarterfinal opponents in contrasting styles at the National Exhibition Centre, Hall No 4, here on Wednesday. Nitu reached the lastfour stage of the women’s minimum weight division (over 45-48kg) when her opponent Nicole Clyde of

Northern Ireland abandoned the bout. The pullout by the Northern Ireland boxer meant Nitu made it to the semifinals and ensured that she will leave Birmingham with at least a bronze medal as both semifinals get a medal in boxing. Hussamuddin advanced into the semifinals by defeating Namibia’s Tryagain Morning Ndevelo 4-1 on points. The place in the semifinals assured him at least a medal in the men’s 57kg division. While she reached

the semifinals because her opponent abandoned the bout, Nitu said she prepared well for her quarterfinal bout and was looking forward to winning it, adding that she is aiming to win the gold medal in Birmingham. India have three more competitors attempting to reach the semifinals on Wednesday. R e i g n i n g Wo r l d Champion Nikhat Zareen, Tokyo Olympics bronze medallist Lovlina Borgohain and Ashish Kumar are scheduled to participate in their respective quarterfinal bouts later in the afternoon. India had a very successful outing in the 2018 Commonwealth Games four years ago winning nine medals -- three gold, three silver and three bronze each, finishing tied with England, who however topped the list as they had won six gold medals. India are hoping to emulate if not better their Gold Coast CWG haul of nine medals.

ted a return. Goh’s continued with similar tactics in the second game as well, trying to bring Sindhu close to the net. However, Sindhu was up for the task as she took an 11-7 lead in the second game. Goh closed the gap after the interval but Sindhu was able to finish the game comfortably on this occasion. It was a gruelling affair and Goh gave her all on court including the last point when she fell on the floor. The final scoreline read 22-20

and 21-17 World number 14 Srikanth came up with a flat performance in the men’s singles. The 42-ranked Tze Yong Ng took the first game off Srikanth for the first time in three meetings to raise hopes of an upset, The Indian then ran away with the second game to level the match. In the decider, Tze led 11-9 at the interval after couple of unforced errors from the Indian. It became 16-12 with Srikanth unable to match Tze’s net play. The Malaysian got his first match point after a long rally that saw Srikanth misjudging a line call at the baseline. Srikanth sent a smash wide in the following point to hand Malaysia a 2-1 advantage. It was also Tze’s first win over the former world number 1 with the final result reading 21-19, 6-21, 21-16 . The world number 11 duo of Thinaah Muralitharan and Koong Le Pearly Tan was too good for lower-ranked Gayatri Gopichand and Treesa Jolly in the women’s doubles, winning 21-18, 21-17 to complete the task.

Weightlifter Lovepreet Singh claims bronze in Men’s 109 kg

Heavyweight weightlifter Lovepreet Singh added to India’s rich haul from weightlifting at the Commonwealth Games by claiming a bronze medal in the Men’s 109kg division at the National Exhibition Centre here on Wednesday. This is the maiden medal for the weightlifter from Amritsar, Punjab in Commonwealth Games. The 24-year-old Lovepreet Singh lifted 163 in snatch and added 192kg in clean and jerk for a combined total of 355 kg, which put him behind Junior Periclex Ngadja Nyabeyeu of Cameroon, who had a total of 361 and Jack Hittila Opeloge of Samoa who had a total of 358. He was a bit lucky as Australia’s Jackson George Roberts-Young failed to lift 150 kg in snatch in two attempts. He also failed in a desperate last-ditch attempt to lift 211 kgs in clean and jerk to try and overhaul Lovepreet. This was India’s ninth medal from the Weightlifting at Birmingham and the 14th medal overall, five gold, five silver, and four

Lovepreet Singh bronze. Though he had a clean series of lifts and succeeded in all six attempts, Lovepreet was totally conservative in his approach and worked with the aim of securing a bronze medal. He said that he had lifted 165 kg in snatch and 195 in clean and jerk during training at a camp in Birmingham a few weeks before the games and only did he attempt to lift 190 in a competition before and failed. Indians normally do well in lower weight categories in weightlifting, boxing and wrestling with very little success in heavyweight and super heavyweight divisions.

That could be the reason why coaches Vijay Sharma & Co. decided to play safe and did not get Lovepreet to attempt 165 kg in snatch, which could have even had him pushing for the silver medal with 195 in final attempts. Love preet star ted with 157 in snatch and cleared 161 and 163 in his next two attempts, which kept him in joint second position going into the clean and jerk. The lifter from Cameroon, who had 160 after snatch, started clean and jerk with 196 and then lifted 201. He failed at 205 kg in his third attempt. Love preet star ted with 185, picked 189 in his second attempt and then upped it to 192 in his third attempt. Australia’s Roberts-Young 202 in his second attempt but failed at 211. A better snatch effort would clearly put him in contention for a medal but that was not to be and Lovepreet, who has won silver in Commonwealth Senior Championships in 2021 and gold in junior, claimed his maiden Commonwealth Games medal.

Indian women beat Canada 3-2, enter semis Nagaland Wushu Association holds BIRMINGHAM, AUG 3 (PTI): The Indian women’s hockey team survived some anxious moments before beating lower-ranked Canada 3-2 in its must-win Pool A match to qualify for the semifinals of the Commonwealth Games here on Wednesday. The Indians looked in control of the match till the 22nd minute, having taken a 2-0 lead over their world no.15 opponents through goals from Salima Tete (3rd minute) and Navneet Kaur (22nd). But the Canadians, then, produced a lion-hearted performance to level the scores through goals from Brienne Stairs (23rd) and Hannah Haughn (39th). With England already assured of a semifinal berth from the pool with a 3-1 win over India on Tuesday, it was a do-or-die match for the Savita Punia-led side, with Canada needing just a draw to progress as they had a better goal difference. Locked 2-2, Janneke Schopman’s girls responded brilliantly when Lalremsiami scored off a rebound, after a penalty corner in the 51st minute.

The Indians came out aggressive in the first quarter and dominated the proceedings from the start. India’s attacking intent bore fruit as early as the third minute of the game when Salima scored off a rebound from a penalty corner. Two minutes later, Lalremsiami missed a great opportunity to double the

lead, her shot whizzing past the Canadian goal post. Just seconds from the first quarter, Sangita Kumari showed great skills to carry the ball from the baseline and create a great chance for India, which was saved by Canadian goalkeeper Rowan Harris. The Canadians showed more intent in

the second quarter and managed to put the Indian defence under pressure on a few occasions. But it was India who doubled their lead, in the 22nd minute, through Navneet Kaur, who shot in an open goal after receiving a pass from Lalremsiami. A minute later Canada secured a penalty corner and reduced the deficit

through Stairs. In the 39th minute, Canada secured another penalty corner and Haughn equalised for her side. With seconds left in the third quarter, Canada secured two more penalty corners, but India defended in numbers. Facing elimination, Monika came close to handing India the muchneeded goal in the 47th minute, but was denied by Canadian custodian Harris. Two minutes later Neha Goyal pushed in from close range but the goal was disallowed as the ball hit Salima’s back stick. The Indians kept up the pressure and secured a penalty corner in the 51st minute, and this time, Lalremsiami tapped in from a goal mouth melee after Gurjit Kaur’s shot was saved by the Canadian defence. Two minutes from the hooter, India secured another penalty corner but failed to utilise it. The Indians kept their defence in shape for the rest of the game to eke out the all-important win.
