New ‘alarming’ Covid-19 variant detected in India
NEW DELHI, JUL 3 (IANS/AGENCIES): About 10 states in India have detected a new sub-variant of Omicron BA.2.75, which may be “alarming” in nature, according to an Israeli expert on Sunday. However, the Indian Health Ministry is yet to officially confirm the detection of the subvariant in the country. In a series of Tweets, Dr. Shay Fleishon, with the Central Virology Laboratory at Sheba Medical Center in Tel Hashomer, said that 85 sequences from eight countries have been uploaded so far on Nextstrain, an opensource platform of genomic data. This included 69 from India: Delhi (1), Haryana (6), Himachal Pradesh (3), Jammu (1), Karnataka (10), Madhya Pradesh (5), Maharashtra (27), Telangana (2), Uttar Pradesh (1), and West Bengal (13). Besides India, the strain has also been reported by seven other countries: Japan (1), Germany (2), the UK (6), Canada (2), the US (2), Australia (1), and New Zealand (2), according to the Nextstrain data. Scientists across the world have also flagged the emergence of a new coronavirus variant in India-- the BA.2.75, which is said to be cropping up increasingly in samples, and may have an increased ability to infect people who have been infected before, as well as those who are vaccinated. BA.2.75 is a sub-lineage of the Omicron variant. Sublineages of Omicron have become the dominant variants circulating across the globe, with new mutations continu-
One dead in road mishap Correspondent
KOHIMA, JUN 3 (NPN): One person died in a road mishap between Kidima and Khezhakeno on Saturday night when the vehicle he was travelling in fell into a gorge near Tichiyi river. According to police, the 41-year-old male who died on the spot was an employee of Health & Family Welfare department (NHM, Phek). Soon after receiving information about the accident, a Phek Police team rushed to the site and retrieved the body. The police team then handed over the body to Kezocha police station officer in-charge. The body was later handed over to the family after observing all legal formalities.

ously evolving. There has been no official communication about the variant from the Indian government, or the Indian SARS-CoV-2 Genomics Consortium (INSACOG), a genomic surveillance agency functioning under the health ministry. Thomas Peacock, a scientist at Imperial College London, in a Twitter thread said that the variant is worth “keeping a close eye” on. A senior genomic scientist in India, who did not wish to be named, told ThePrint that the majority of the samples of the variant have been detected in India. Lipi Thukral, a scientist at the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research-Institute of Genomics and Integrative Biology (CSIR-IGIB) Delhi, told ThePrint: “This lineage may require urgent attention as most of the mutations are unique and [it] has also changed its physiochemical character quite a lot.” Thukral explained that there are nine mutations on critical interfaces of the coronavirus, including five changes in what is known as the N-terminal domain of the spike protein. The N-terminal domain plays an important role in the virus attaching itself to the host
cell, and is a valuable target for neutralising antibodies. Meanwhile, there are four mutations in the receptor binding domain region, which interacts with the ACE2 receptor in the host, Thukral said. The ACE2 is an enzyme that acts as the receptor for the SARS-CoV-2 virus and allows it to infect host cells. The BA.2.75 variant includes new mutations in the spike protein, in addition to the mutations that are already present in the Omicron variant, explained the Indian genomic scientist quoted earlier. Spike proteins are the protrusions seen on the outer surface of the novel coronavirus. Of particular concern, said the scientist, are the mutations ‘G446S’ and ‘R493Q’, both of which are associated with significant changes in the protein structure of the spike protein, with the potential to give the variant the ability to evade several antibodies. As a result, the variant is expected to infect people who have been vaccinated, or have been infected previously. However, currently, there is a lack of data on how fast the infection from this particular variant is spreading, owing to insufficient surveillance.

Problems of NE to be solved by 2024: Shah TELANGANA, JUL 3 (ANI): Union Home Minister Amit Shah, who made several moves to resolve the long-pending issues of the Northeastern states, on Sunday said that the BJP has found a “permanent address” in the region. He also said that the region will have no more problems in the coming times and that all its issues will be solved by 2024. The Home Minister made the remarks while speaking at the BJP national executive meeting during his address on the political resolution. Notably, in a major step in March, the Centre had removed AFPSA from 15 police station areas in seven districts of Nagaland, 15 police station areas in six districts of Manipur and 23 districts entirely and one district partially in Assam. Assam and Meghalaya governments, in March this year, signed a historic

agreement here in the national capital to resolve their 50-year-old pending border dispute. The agreement was signed between Assam and Meghalaya two months after a draft resolution was submitted by the chief ministers of the two states to Amit Shah on January 31 for examination and consideration by the MHA. Speaking on the speech of Shah, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma briefed the media and said, “It has been a journey for us in the North East and the Home Minister told us that he was delighted that we now have a permanent
address in the Northeast and that we are going nowhere.” When asked what Amit Shah said about the reason that the Citizenship Amendment Act has not been implemented, the Assam CM said that the objection by the Opposition to the reforms brought in by the government has led to the delay, however, the government is committed to implementing the CAA. “You know that the Opposition has been objecting to a number of things on a number of reforms by the Modi government including the CAA. There has been a delay but we are committed to implementing CAA and the rules will be formed,” Sarma said. Detailing how the BJP plans to solve the problems of the Northeast region, Sarma said, “Amit Shah spoke about how the journey of the BJP has been in the north-east and development post-arrival of the Modi gov-
ernment in 2014... We also discussed how the AFSPA has been removed from the northeast region in about 60 per cent of the areas... He also said that by 2024, there will be no more fault lines in the north-east and all the issues will be solved.” Meanwhile, Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Sunday moved the political resolution on behalf of the BJP during the party’s national executive meeting and slammed Opposition parties for targeting the then Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi in the 2002 riots case. Shah threw light on the recent verdict of the Supreme Court giving a clean chit to then Gujarat Chief Minister in the 2002 Gujarat riots case where the petitioner was Zakia Jafri, widow of former Congress MP Ehsan Jafri, challenging the clean chit given by the Special Investigation Team (SIT) to Narendra Modi.
State govt has no policy for private sector: NPCC DIMAPUR, JUL 3 (NPN): Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee (NPCC) president K.Therie maintained that despite all the brouhaha over investment in Nagaland, the much hyped investment of Rs.20 lakh crore for Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises(MSMEs) in India are rendered inapplicable to Nagaland as per Banks and Financial institutions. In a statement, Therie pointed out the rules of SBI and other financial institutions appear to be different as these institutions do not adhere to notifications in public domain. He said even for implementation,
55% IndiGo flights delayed as crew call sick NEW DELHI, JUL 3 (PTI/ AGENCIES): Fifty-five per cent of IndiGo’s domestic flights were delayed on Saturday as a significant number of cabin crew members took sick leave, with sources in the industry saying they ostensibly went for an Air India recruitment drive. Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has taken strong cognizance against IndiGo and demanded a clarification behind the massive flight delays nationwide. When asked about this matter, DGCA chief Arun Kumar told PTI on Sunday, “We are looking into this.” The phase-2 of Air India’s

According to the Ministry of Civil Aviation’s website, 45.2% of IndiGo’s domestic flights operated on time on Saturday. In comparison, the on-time performances of Air India, SpiceJet, Vistara, Go First and AirAsia India was 77.1%, 80.4%, 86.3%, 88% and 92.3%, respectively, on Saturday. The Tata Group took control of Air India on January 27, after successfully winning the bid for the airline on October 8 last year. Air India has started a recruitment drive for fresh cabin crew members as it is planning to buy new planes and improve its services.
there was no such Credit Guarantee Scheme (CGS) nor Unsecured Loan (without security) to revive sick industries and neither Start Up entrepreneur’s loan in Nagaland. Therie based his point on how policies for promotion of entrepreneurs were mismanaged by the state government. He claimed the even in selection of beneficiaries for PMRY loans was done politically where selection was not based on merit of skill, commitment or feasibility report etc and for which make beneficiaries think that PMRY was “a political gift”. This was the reason PMRY beneficia-
ries do not repay loans while banks blame bad loans on public and refuse to provide loans, he said. The other factor for banks not advancing loans to local entrepreneurs was delayed implementation of SARFAESI Act for several years since the state did not understand Nagaland Revenue Regulation Act. He said the state government has also not declared cadastral areas in Dimapur district except a small part of Dimapur city. Due to this, he said banks and financial institutions were not entertaining any MSME schemes in Nagaland.
Therie also maintained that the annual government budget is solely for salary and allowances. He said even on this, the number of government employees has ballooned from 76,000 to 1,45,000. Further, he said ‘backdoor appointments have deprived all reservation policies. After deduction of huge debt servicing, he said the remaining development fund was shared by ruling politicians and insurgent groups. He said shortage of funds for salaries were experienced for most of the months. Therie alleged that the state chief minister has built his own chain of resorts and
hotels. He alleged that five cases of money laundering have been filed against certain CMO officials including the chief minister’s relatives. He said those having ED cases were “just simple and innocent people, who have been used.” In the light of these, Therie said the only way to develop in Nagaland was through corrupt money. Therie also said Rs.200 crore meant for Mon medical colleges has been released while Kohima medical college has been forgotten and CBI probing construction of high court building. (Cont’d on p-8)
3-day CSR conclave postponed; new dates later DIMAPUR, JUL 3 (NPN): The State government has announced postponement of the much-anticipated three-day Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), Bankers and Investors meet at Kohima that was scheduled from Monday. Informing this in a statement, minister panning & coordination, land revenue and parliamentary affairs, Neiba Kronu said that conclave had to be postponed as Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, who was supposed to attend, had rescheduled her visit to some unforeseen circumstances. Regretting the postponement and apologising for
the inconvenience caused, Kronu said new dates for the conclave would be announced once Sitharaman’s fresh schedule was finalised. Kronu said the conclave had multiple objectives of bringing in innovation and private capital in meeting developmental challenges of the State, forging long-term partnerships that would help in further integrating the State’s economic players with the national value chains and promoting private industry in the State. He said the event was planned in close coordination with various ministries and departments of the Central government, Invest
India and Confederation of Indian Industry (CII). Intensive efforts were put in by all partners for reaching out to companies and CSR implementing agencies both within the State and outside. Kronu said it was encouraged and very happy at the enthusiastic response and concern of the corporate world. He said chief minister Neiphiu Rio had personally invited the Union Finance Minister for the CSR & Investment Conclave at the stage of conceptualisation, which she had consented and thereafter guided the State government planning the event. He said the State
government appreciated the guidance and positive contributions of the minister and looked forward to her continued support. The government was also appreciative of the commitments made by the companies and their partners, and the special efforts of senior officials of the Central government and the companies to schedule travel to the State for the summit. While expressing regret, Kronu hoped that the support given and the commitments made by the companies would continue and there would be redoubled participation in the rescheduled event.

Street play on ‘children and domestic workers’
Children at the street play at Dimapur Railway Station. DIMAPUR: Assisi Centre for integrated development, National Domestic Workers Movement (NDWM) Nagaland region, and All Nagaland Domestic Workers Union (ANDWU) through the support of Hilton Sisters organised a street play on the theme “Children and Domestic Workers” at Railway station and Super market, Dimapur on July 2. In a press note, coordinator, NDWM Nagaland region, Sister Pramila informed that the street play enacted by NDWM-CRM children and ANDWU members addressed issues such as child labour, child domestic workers, and domestic workers issues. Sister Pramila in her address expressed that children too had rights and that it was the duty of the elders to give it to them. She also stated that
in the name of ‘education’ children ended up as child domestic workers, their rights violated, abused, and basic needs unfulfilled. She further added that domestic workers also contributed a lot the economy of the nation. However, with a large number of domestic workers being women, they would go unnoticed as they do the “same work in both employer’s house and their own homes”. She therefore called for the need to recognize them as workers, respect their work, ensure days off, secure and safe working conditions with fair wage, and that they should not be treated as ‘slaves’ or ‘helpers’. Later, concluding remarks were delivered by Sister Salomi who also stressed on importance of protecting children and treating domestic workers fairly.

Correspondent
S H I L L O N G, J U L 3 : Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma on Sunday said the State Bank of India (SBI) has the capacity to become a top global bank. “You have the opportunity to make a difference in your organization by having a goal, a vision of making SBI a global player,” he said to the gathering after inaugurating the 31st annual general meeting of Officers’ Association, North Eastern Circle, SBI at U Soso Tham Auditorium. “SBI has such a brand name, so much of trust and experience, a large scale of network that it can take on anybody but it is the internal innovation and improvements in many areas that needs to be thought about in such meetings and share with each other experiences,” Sangma who also holds the finance portfolio, added. Recalling the role of his father and former Lok Sabha Speaker , (late) Purno Agitok Sangma Sangma in bringing the Regional Office of SBI from Kolkata to Guwahati, Sangma said that the banking sector is very crucial at the grassroots level to ensure that different programs are implemented
Conrad Sangma efficiently. “The different programs of the State and the Central government make it mandatory for the beneficiaries to have bank accounts and therefore it is very crucial that banks at the grassroots level are efficient for implementation of the programs,” he said. “We have faced multiple challenges as a government because of the absence of banking sectors at the grassroots level in the implementation of various government programs,” the Chief Minister added. “Both private and public sector banks provide banking services but banking is one part and service is another and we need to differentiate between these two and sometimes we tend to forget that we are here to serve the people and while giving that service we have to do so with care and passion,” he emphasized.

Apart from landslides on NH 37, heavy downpours on several occasions have wreaked havoc in several parts of the region with several landslides. The multiple landslides that hit the normal vehicular movement on the second lifeline of the state came days after the devastating landslide that hit the 107 Territorial Army (TA) camp located at Tupul railway construction camp at Makhuam area of Noney district on June 30.

Horticulture board project to enhance queen pineapple production in Tripura AGARTALA, JUL 3 (PTI): The National Horticulture Board (NHB) has initiated several measures to make Tripura’s Sepahijala district a major hub for roundthe-year production of the queen variety of pineapple, which, in turn, will benefit its 2,500 cultivators in the district, an official said on Sunday. Tonnes of queen pineapple, which has been officially declared as Tripura’s state fruit, gets exported to Dubai, Doha and other parts of the world every year, and the new measures to the tune of Rs 65 crore, once implemented, will add to that volume, the director of horticulture department, Phani Bhushan Jamatia, said. “The National Horticulture Board (NHB) has decided to launch a pilot project for year-long pineapple production in Sepahijala, besides looking after its promotion and branding activities. A process has already begun to kick off the ambitious project in the district. “As part of its mea-
Queen Pineapple of Tripura sures, the fruit will be grown in clusters so that they can be well attended to. Besides, a state-of-art laboratory will be set up in the district to check the quality of the produce,” Jamatia told PTI. A survey was carried out by NHB in Sepahijala, and a plan was accordingly designed, based on the results, to enhance the production of the fruit, known for its unique taste and food value, he stated. “An expression of interest (EoI) has already been sought from prospective agencies having expertise in pineapple production. The NHB will fund 50 per
cent of the total project cost, while the remaining expenditure will have to be incurred by the agency by way of arranging bank loan,” Jamatia explained. Sepahijala district accounts for 40 per cent of the state’s total queen pineapple production, he added Tripura annually produces around 1.44 MT of the queen variety – a chunk of which gets exported to middle-east and other countries. Around 300MT pineapples were sold to other states of India and foreign nations in 2019, according to official records.

NAGALAND POST, DIMAPUR MONDAY, JULY 4, 2022
apprehend two LeT terrorists, Next 30-40 years will be era of BJP: Amit Shah Villagers one of them ex-BJP worker in J&K
HYDERABAD, JUL 3 (PTI): Asserting that the next 30 to 40 years will be the era of the BJP which will make India a “vishwa guru” (world leader), its senior leader Amit Shah said on Sunday the party will end “family rule” in Telangana and West Bengal and also form governments in states where power has so far remained out of its reach. In his address at the BJP national executive meeting while proposing political resolution, the Union home minister called for ending the politics of dynasty, casteism and appeasement and cited the party’s win in a string of recent polls as an endorsement of its “politics of development and performance”. He identified southern India as the region for its next round of growth, and said the opposition had become disjointed and dispirited with members of the Congress fighting for democracy within their organisation as its ruling family clung to its position. He also hailed as “historic” the recent Supreme Court verdict dismissing a plea challenging the Special Investigation Team’s (SIT) clean chit to 64 people, including then chief minister Narendra Modi, in the 2002 Gujarat riots case. The court had also come down hard on the petitioners. The apex court
Amit Shah (File)
has exposed opposition parties, a section of media and some NGOs for their conspiracy to defame Modi, he said. The BJP leader said Modi received insults, maintained silence while facing the SIT and kept his faith in the Constitution while contrasting this with the Congress’ attempt to spread “anarchy” after its leader Rahul Gandhi was summoned by the Enforcement Directorate in the National Herald case. The opposition party had launched nationwide protests, blaming the ruling party’s vendetta for the probe against its top functionaries. Briefing reporters on Shah’s speech, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said Modi never did the kind of “drama” that Gandhi has done while facing a lawful investigation. The home minister said Modi drank all the poison thrown at him like Lord Shiva and faced the probe.
Sarma parried queries on whether the killing of Udaipur tailor Kanhaiya Lal, who was hacked to death by two Islamic fanatics, or the row involving suspended BJP member Nupur Sharma over her objectionable remarks against Prophet Mohammad was part of deliberations at the national executive meet, but added that specific incidents are generally not discussed at such a conclave where the focus is on “macro” issues. He, though, alleged that had the Cong ress not star ted politics of appeasement, incidents like Udaipur killing might not have happened. The home minister in his address called for ending “dynastic politics, casteism and politics of appeasement” and termed them “greatest sins” and the reason behind the country’s sufferings over the years. Communalism and fundamentalism are products of appeasement,
Sarma said. The home minister in his nearly hour-long speech cited the BJP’s win in a series of polls to assert that it underlined people’s approval of the party’s “politics of development and performance”. He also sought an end to political violence. Sarma, though, did not elaborate on this. The BJP has in the past accused parties such as the ruling Trinamool Congress in West Bengal and the Left in Kerala of resorting to violence against its workers. The party’s political resolution also praised the Agnipath scheme for shortterm recruitment in armed forces which had sparked public protests and criticism from opposition parties, and lauded the government’s courage for taking a host of initiatives for the country’s development, Sarma said. Claiming that the BJP will end family rule in states like Telangana and West Bengal, Shah said it will come to power in Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Odisha, states which have so far remained out of the saffron party’s power march since it formed government at the Centre in 2014. There was a “collective hope and finding” at the meeting that the BJP’s next round of growth will come from south India, Sarma added.
Targeting the Congress, Shah said it has become a party of family with the Gandhi family not letting inter nal organisational elections happen because it fears losing its control of the party. The opposition is disjointed and has been opposing everything good the government does, he said, referring to issues such as the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, construction of Ram temple, surgical strikes and abrogation of Article 370. “The Congress has been affected by ‘Modi phobia’ and opposes every decision of the Modi g o ve r n m e n t t a k e n i n national interest,” he said. Lauding the prime minister’s leadership, the home minister said he is now considered as “one of the top leaders” in the world and is sought out for his views on a host of issues ranging from environment to terrorism. Referring to the BJPled National Democratic Alliance’s presidential candidate Droupadi Murmu, he said the saffron par ty under the Modi government chose a Dalit, incumbent President Ram Nath Kovind, and now a Scheduled Tribe during the two elections for the top constitutional post and asked party members to publicise the story of Murmu’s life and struggle.
NEW DELHI, JUL 3 (AGENCIES): In a daring act, villagers of Tuksan village in Reasi district of Jammu and Kashmir Sunday handed over two Lashkar-e-Taiba terrorists to the police after capturing the men overnight, who came to the village as imposters seeking shelter. “LeT commander Talib Hussain, a resident of Rajouri district and the mastermind behind the recent IED blasts in the district, and Faizal Ahmad Dar, a categorised terrorist of south Kashmir’s Pulwama district, were captured,” said the Jammu Police. Police said that Hussain was in constant touch with LeT terrorist Qasim based in Pakistan and was involved in at least three cases of IED blasts in Rajouri district besides civilian killings and grenade blasts. He was also associated with the BJP and had previously been appointed Jammu BJP Minority Morcha’s IT and social media in-charge. During preliminary questioning, it was revealed that both the terrorists were also in touch with a Pakistani LeT handler. “It was around 9 pm when the terrorists entered one of the houses in the v i l l a ge a n d a s k e d f o r shelter,” said Mohammed Mustaq, sarpanch of the

village, while talking to ThePrint. He said it was the family of Mohammed Yousif Saman Abdul Aziz that deserved the credit for capturing the terrorists. Recounting the incident to ThePrint, Aziz’s brother said both the terrorists entered his brother’s house at around 9 pm on July 2. “They entered and told my brother’s family that they were shepherds and needed shelter. Soon after the family provided them food, both of them warned my brother to step out of the house and asked him to switch off the phone,” the brother, Mohammed Shamas Din Abdul Aziz, said. “My brother soon realised that there was something wrong and called one of my brothers from the washroom. We (four brothers) were in Angrala village and it took us one hour to reach Tuksan,” he added. He further said that
they took a rope along with them. “When we reached, both the terrorists were sleeping in a room and their belongings were kept outside the room. When we checked, it had ammunition and we kept the bags outside the house,” Mohammed Shamas Din said. Two AK assault rifles, seven grenades and a pistol were recovered from the terrorists, Jammu Police informed. The family locked the terrorists in the room but one of them was able to break the door and get out. “We captured and tied them with the rope when they stepped out of the room,” the brother recalled. It was the next morning when the family was able to inform the police. “Due to poor network, we were not able to connect to the police and it was around 6 am when we could establish contact with SDPO, Mohare tehsil,” he said.
Days after bypoll jolt, SP dissolves all Sinha urges Murmu to affirm she won’t be ‘rubber stamp Rashtrapati’ national and state executive bodies
women wings. “He has also dissolved the national, state and district executives.” A senior SP leader said, “The party is gearing up for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections and the focus is to strengthen the organisation to take on the BJP with full force.” The BJP on the other hand said it was the SP’s internal matter, but asked why Yadav did not take the responsibility himself. “The party should tell people why it lost elections under Akhilesh Yadav.
Patna admin demolishes 90 illegal structures PATNA, JUL 3 (IANS): The Patna district administration on Sunday launched an anti encroachment drive and demolished 90 illegal structures, according to the District Magistrate of Patna. The anti-encroachment drive was started at 5.30 a.m. in Rajiv Nagar and Nepali Nagar localities of central Patna. During the drive, the district administration faced stiff resistance from the local residents who had stored bricks and stones on the rooftops of the buildings and pelted them on the police party, officials of district administration and Bihar Rajya Awas Board. Half a dozen police personnel including City SP central Ambrish Rahul were injured in the clash. The district administration ar rived at these two adjoining localities with 14 earth mover machines (JCB) and 2,000 police personnel. “A s w e f a c e d stiff resistance from the encroachers, our police force fired tear gas shells on them. Some police personnel also sustained injuries including City SP Ambrish Rahul. We have arrested 12 persons and efforts are on to identify others,” said Chandrashekher Singh, District Magistrate of Patna.
“Rajiv Nagar and Nepali Nagar were developed illegally by land mafias. The registries here have been completely banned. Still, majority of them got the registry done at other places or took the power of attorney of lands which belong to Bihar Rajya Awas Board and local land mafias illegally sold this land to innocent people,” Singh said. “We had served legal notice to every resident to vacate the land a month ago. Still, they ignored it. We eventually used force to remove the encroachment. The structures which were demolished are under construction,” Singh said. M e a n w h i l e, l o c a l residents claimed that they are the legal owners of land and also paying municipal taxes, electricity and power bills for more than 20 years. If the land belongs to Bihar Rajya Awas board, how would we get government facilities like power supply and house tax deposit. During the clash, Jan Adhikar Party president Rajesh Ranjan alias Pappu Yadav also visited Rajiv Nagar and Nepali Nagar and blamed government bodies for allowing them to construct houses and then demolish the same.
Cong warns of stern action over Rahul’s doctored video, FIR registered in Jaipur NEW DELHI, JUL 3 (PTI): The Congress on Sunday warned the BJP and a section of the media to desist from doctoring facts to “defame” the party and its leaders, and said an FIR has been registered in Jaipur against a TV channel for airing a doctored video of Rahul Gandhi. Congress leader and head of media and publicity Pawan Khera said more such action will be taken against the BJP and its leaders for propagating fake news and sharing the doctored video of Gandhi in which his comments about SFI leaders, who allegedly ransacked his Waya n a d o f f i c e we r e “mischievously” used as if it looked like he was condoning or forgiving the killers of tailor Kanhaiya Lal in Udaipur. The purported video has since been taken off air and the channel has apologised after admitting its mistake, he said, but added that a lot of damage has already been done. Khera warned that the Congress will take stern and a befitting legal action against all those indulging in fake news against its leadership as its “decency
has sadly mistaken. It is our ornament and we are free to take that ornament off and take legal action. Gone are the days we continued to be decent because we have been watching the BJP, its IT cell,” he said. Khera said the Cong ress will remind Pawan Khera those in power of their should not be mistaken as ‘Raj Dharma’ and their its shackle”. constitutional oath. The Congress leader alleged that former information and broadcasting minister Rajyavardhan Rathore, who hails from Rajasthan, shared the video “irresponsibly” and some others in the BJP followed suit. Noting that this particular episode acquires a very serious dimension as it involves communal harmony of the country, Khera said, “You cannot a g g r ava t e p a s s i o n s by doctoring videos and provoking people, provoking communities.” “This FIR was registered against the channel, against the MPs and the senior leaders of the BJP. Bigger action will follow. “Because anybody who thinks that our decency is our shackle, he

The BJP was thrilled when the same judiciary passed an order on Ram Janmabhoomi and the whole country accepted it, because that order came from the judiciary, he pointed out and said “but today, if they (SC) are being critical of certain developments these people are going against the judiciary that is a very unwelcome, dangerous development in our democracy.” Sinha, in response to a question said that he will not be meeting JD(S) patriarch

Accusing the Central government of misusing agencies like ED, CBI, IT to fix political opponents, Sinha, reminding that he too has held some important posts in the government said, “never before did it ever cross our mind that the agencies of the government can and should be used against political opponents.” “It has become a common practice now, any one from the opposition parties, who tries to raise his head or an issue is immediately issued a notice by one of these agencies,” he said, adding respectable leaders are being made to appear before ED, not because it has relevant questions to ask, but because the govt wants to insult.

Akhilesh Yadav
Why Yadav himself did not take responsibility for the defeats,” BJP spokesman Rakesh Tripathi said. “The SP lost Lok Sabha polls in 2014 and 2019 and assembly elections in 2017 and 2022 under Akhilesh Yadav. He should also take the responsibility,” Tripathi said. Azamgarh and Rampur, Lok Sbha seats considered the SP’s pocket boroughs owing to their caste and religious compositions, went to bypolls recently after they were vacated by Yadav and senior leader Azam Khan. The BJP came out as victorious. Analysts put it down to the failure of the SP’s timetested MY (Muslim-Yadav) against the BJP’s MY (ModiYogi) phenomenon. The SP has, however, attributed its defeat to the alleged misuse of official machinery.

LUCKNOW, JUL 3 (PTI): Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav Sunday dissolved the party’s all national, state and district executive bodies including the youth and the women’s wing, days after the SP lost two Lok Sabha seats considered its bastions to the BJP in bypolls. Though the party has not given any reason for the decision, which comes into effect immediately, it is seen as an attempt to revamp the organisation after the drubbing on Rampur and Azamgarh seats. The SP’s Uttar Pradesh president Naresh Uttam will, however, continue to remain in his position, the party said. Fourth covid wave
W
ith surge in daily cases of Covid 19 in India, there are fears that Covid vaccine including the mandated third booster does has not helped prevent infection as well as re-infection. At present, these re-infection trends are being spearheaded by the Omicron variant and its closely related subvariants, all of which have evolved to possess the power to partially dodge immunity. This highly infectious variant has diminished vaccines’ ability to prevent most re-infections, leaving everyone - those previously infected as well as those vaccinated and boosted — at risk of multiple bouts of COVID. The main rampaging virus is the mutated Omicron Covid-19 in India. This has raised a debate regarding boosters shots of the Covid-19 vaccine. Some experts, however, believe that there are several concerns that need to be addressed before any booster dose is approved. Global shreds of evidence, incidentally, suggest that fully-vaccinated people or even those with booster doses are being infected with Omicron as well. In India, too, there have been plenty instances of individuals testing COVID positive on two or three separate occasions since 2020 (albeit due to different variants) — and that’s despite reduced testing and not accounting for the asymptomatic cases. But they may very well get re-infected for the fourth and fifth time in the months and years to come, according to experts. It may be recalled that during the first and second wave of COVID-19 pandemic there was the assumption that a one-time infection or a vaccine dose would provide with life-long immunity against the novel coronavirus. As already evident, the virus is here to stay, and its future is likely to involve persistent waves of infections occurring several times a year. According to medical scientists, there is clearly possibility that the rising cases of covid-19 and its mutants point to a fourth pandemic wave. After a series of mutations and variations, the coronavirus now seems to have gained mastery at re-infecting people. In countries like the US and South Africa, where Omicron subvariants BA.2 and BA.4/BA.5 are currently dominant, individuals that were previously infected by the ‘original’ Omicron are already reporting second infections due to the newer versions. There are scientists who believe that as long as the current Omicron subvariants remain dominant, the infections will be less severe but more frequent, with the potential to recur every three or four months. At present, two vaccines, Covishield and Covaxin, are being administered to people above 18 years of age under the adult vaccination programme for Covid-19. The gap between two doses of Covishield and Covaxin is 12 and 4 weeks respectively. There is no denying the fact that a booster dose increases the level of antibody in an individual. However, there is no scientific evidence to suggest that the high antibody, acquired with the help of vaccines, can prevent infection from the variants of SARS-CoV-2.According to Dr.Jaiprakash Muliyil, eminent epidemiologist and chairperson of the Scientific Advisory Committee of the National Institute of Epidemiology at the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), the Omicron variant of Covid-19 is “almost unstoppable” and everyone will eventually be infected with it. Perhaps that is proving to be true and will herald the fourth pandemic wave though not as severe as the second.
DailyDevotion The Concentration of Personal Sin
Woe is me, for I am undone! Because I am a man of unclean lips… —Isaiah 6:5 When I come into the very presence of God, I do not realize that I am a sinner in an indefinite sense, but I suddenly realize and the focus of my attention is directed toward the concentration of sin in a particular area of my life. A person will easily say, “Oh yes, I know I am a sinner,” but when he comes into the presence of God he cannot get away with such a broad and indefinite statement. Our conviction is focused on our specific sin, and we realize, as Isaiah did, what we really are. This is always the sign that a person is in the presence of God. There is never any vague sense of sin, but a focusing on the concentration of sin in some specific, personal area of life. God begins by convicting us of the very thing to which His Spirit has directed our mind’s attention. If we will surrender, submitting to His conviction of that particular sin, He will lead us down to where He can reveal the vast underlying nature of sin. That is the way God always deals with us when we are consciously aware of His presence. This experience of our attention being directed to our concentration of personal sin is true in everyone’s life, from the greatest of saints to the worst of sinners. When a person first begins climbing the ladder of experience, he might say, “I don’t know where I’ve gone wrong,” but the Spirit of God will point out some definite and specific thing to him. The effect of Isaiah’s vision of the holiness of the Lord was the directing of his attention to the fact that he was “a man of unclean lips.” “He touched my mouth with it, and said: ‘Behold, this has touched your lips; your iniquity is taken away, and your sin purged’ ” (Isaiah 6:7). The cleansing fire had to be applied where the sin had been concentrated.

NAGALAND POST, DIMAPUR MONDAY, JULY 4, 2022
Economy, politics fluid High GST, levies on gold, banks shoot up prices
T
he economics and politics are becoming difficult. If the change of government in Maharashtra is for an ideology, how Arrey Colony metro depot and a water project take precedence over everything else to get a clearance. Similarly higher taxes are known to spurt rising prices, but that is how the GST Council and the direct taxes board decide to raise the rates on many items, a repeat of what was done in January even as wholesale price index touches 1588. It is perhaps difficult to understand how the GST Council can take decisions that have obvious impact on the overall price situation. In January too the rates on critical textiles, handloom and shoes were raised 5 to 18 percent. Now the Reserve Bank, SEBI works are defined as services and brought under tax net. Even a cheque book normal for a banking transaction invites taxes of 18 percent. It means each transaction would have huge additional cost. Cumulatively these would have severe cost increases on all business activities. Similarly, it is irrational to propose taxes on post office services other than
postcards, inland letters, book post and envelopes weighing less than 10 gm to be taxed. Each such move has cascading effect on the price situation. It must have foxed the RBI, which is engaged in keeping inflation low. It will again resort to repo rate rises by August. The chain is likely to continue as the government and the RBI are apparently not on same page. It puzzles one to realise why the two projects in Mumbai were virtually stacked by the Shiv Sena Aghadi government for environmental and other concerns become a priority despite a court ruling. Is the present government right or was it the previous government? It seems considerations are more than ideological. Apart it seems these have been taken up as exerting ego issues. Removing forests have its impact all over the country. The recent marooning of large tracts in North-East is ascribed to felling or trees to various ‘developmental’ projects. People’s representatives need to show more concern on such fragile issues that affect everybody’s lives. Yes, another issue certainly is the bullet train
with stake of over Rs 1.08 lakh crore investments. The Aghadi government had virtually stalled it. Now it may again see an acceleration of land acquisition. The change of government is possibly to restart such projects. On the tax front, a crucial government decision is to raise the taxes on gold to dampen its high demand. The import duty is raised to 12.5 perShivaji cent from 7.5 percent. If the surcharge is added precious reaches effectively 15 percent from the existing 10.5 percent. The hike has raised the gap between local and overseas prices to more than 15 percent. There may be marginal fall in imports but historically high duty makes dubious paths of smuggling more remunerative. No amount of policing could stop that as the once zero duty on gold did. Yet another business aspect is ignored. About half of the gold imports are re-exported as ornaments and other value addition. An expensive domestic gold would hit the international prices causing India to lose a lucrative market. India’s May trade deficit widened to $ 24.29 billion from $
6.53 billion a year ago as gold imports surged to $ 6 billion from $ 678 million. During May, gold imports surged to 107 tonnes. The new rates are to impact banking services to milling machinery for cereals and petroleum products at rates varying from 5 to 18 percent. It would impact family budgets as these cover wider ranging goods like LED lamps, ink, knives, blades, Sarkar power-driven pumps, and dairy machinery from 12 per cent to 18 per cent; that for milling machinery for cereals from 5 per cent to 18 per cent; and that for solar water heaters and finished leather from 5 per cent to 12 per cent. The rate for work-contract services supplied to governments and local authorities is proposed to be increased to 18 per cent. The rationale is difficult to understand like why a contractual service or pumping sets used by farmers or milling machinery for cereals should be taxed to make the basic food production expensive. Country pining to export wheat and other grains need to rethink the benefits and losses of higher taxes
on issues aiding its operations. The GST Council allows GoM recommendations on withdrawing exemptions for services such as the transport of passengers in business class from airports in the Northeast. Hotel accommodation costing under Rs 1,000 per day will be taxed at par with the industry (12 per cent). Hospital rooms except ICU, with a daily rent of Rs 5,000, could be taxed at 5 per cent. Government in the psot-covid situation has need for cash. It has to realise that the hotel and tourism industry suffered heavily during covid. Imposition of such taxes hit more the travelers, who have just started moving out. Penalizing them with high duties may have deleterious effect. A cautious but proactive step is the move to impose cess on export of petrol and diesel by private companies. The ministry says that they were compelled to take such action as crude prices recently spiked diesel and petrol have shown sharper increase. The refiners export these at globally prevailing prices, which are very high. The private refiners find exports highly remunera-
tive. The domestic crude producers sell to domestic markets and prevailing international prices and make windfall gains. Certain refiners for purposes of export keep their pumps in the country dry. To check it Rs 6 on petrol and Rs 13 per litre on diesel or Rs 23250 per tonne have been imposed with a condition that they would not export more than 50 percent of the total crude production. For the same reason cess on aviation fuel too has been imposed. The states should feel happy at the extension of the GST compensation cess for 14 percent CAGR till March 2026 but they also have to have concern for impact prices. The RBI 25th Financial Stability Report sees global outlook uncertain and domestic situation though improving still away from being in ship shape and geopolitical risks warrant careful handling and close monitoring. The political situation and price movements would continue to create shaky conditions. The states are still not satisfied on the financial fall-out for them. Relook at rising rates and burden on the people is a must.
Post-mortem

Strive for truth, struggle for freedom, pursue justice
ontroversial comments made against Prophet Mohammad by the BJP national spokeswoman Nupur Sharma leading to national and international uproar resulting to her suspension continues to have ripple effects. The most striking one since then is the arrest of well-known fact checker and the co-founder of ALT News, Mohd Zubair on the 27th June, 2022 by Delhi police on charges of promoting enmity on religious grounds and deliberately hurting religious feelings, through a tweet which is a non-bailable offence. A few days ago, a case was registered against Zubair following a complaint from a Twitter handler over a tweet posted in 2018 allegedly had a “questionable linkage with a purpose to deliberately insult the god of a particular religion”, the police said. Zubair was produced before the court where police sought remand for his custodial interrogation, saying it was required “to unravel the conspiracy.” The court granted four days of police custody for Zubair. The reasons given by the police for four days custody was to secure his electronic devices in Bengaluru. However, the police in their search wants to get hold of “dubious financial transaction.”
D
The case registered against him is about four years old. Zubair has been booked under sections 295 A (deliberate and malicious acts, intended to outrage religious feelings of any class by insulting its religion and religious beliefs) and 153 A (promoting enmity between different groups on grounds of religion, race, place of birth, residence, language, etc., and doing acts prejudicial to maintenance of harmony). Adding further, the police officer said “The tweet was being retweeted and it appeared … social media entities indulging in insult mongering, thereby leading to a possible ramification of on communal harmony … The tweet containing picture and words against a particular religious community is highly provocative.” While on the other, Alt news co-founder Prateek Sinha said “no notice was given before Zubair’s arrest, which is mandatory for the sections which he has been booked under. No FIR cop has been given to us despite repeated requests”. The ways with which Mohd Zubair was arrested and the charges on which he has been booked raise a number of questions. A question that looms at large in the minds of many is: why was he arrested? He has been booked for one
case and arrested for some other. Delhi police keep giving a number of reasons. At last, they say that for the 2018 tweet. Therefore, the reasons and facts for his are yet to be established and ascertained. How come, all of a sudden, the name and arrest of Mohd Zubair, known for his professionalism surfaced that has shaken the journalists’ community because of the fact that he is a person of integrity who stood for freedom and strived for truth. As a professional journalist and a fact-checker he is known for his objectivity in disseminating news and information cutting across religion, community, language, region and many others within as well as outside the country. And yet, Mohammad Zubair has been detained. Why and for what? The background to his arrest could perhaps be that a few months ago Mohd Zubair was the first one to disclose everything to the nation and the world at large what Nupur Sharma said about Prophet Mohammed during a news channel debate on Gyanvapi mosque. Over and above, Zubair in recent times has been exposing the flaws and failures of the current ruling BJP dispensation on a number of issues that may have aroused ire. Every day we keep
hearing or witnessing a test case and what happened to Mohammad Zubair is something normal but at another level which is horrendous and devastating. The arrest of Zubair send a clear message along with other message passed on those who believe in the freedom of expression and strive for truth. Mohammad Zubair strives by taking the truth to another level vis-à-vis posttruth. Zubair was one of the first persons to tweet about Nupur Sharma’s controversial remark about Prophet Mohamad. In a toxic political climate that we are in where fake news and false narratives and yet there are some who strive and push for truth to post-truth which is increasingly becoming an impossible possibility. Zubair busts the dubious instances with clarity, objectivity, precision and honesty. By exposing those who abuse their power and authority, trample and silence there are journalists and citizens who strive for truth by taking to post-truth levels. Mohammad Zubair is certainly one among them. The irony that we face is the political leaders talk about freedom of expression and rule of law when they tour oversea vociferously. The moment they set their foot on Indian soil behave
and act the opposite ways, which is schizophrenic, double talk and double act. Everyday we come across new formats of heinous and dastardly crimes inflicted against individuals and communities. It makes the concerned citizens to wonder where all these are going to take us and what kind of society we want to leave for the present and the future generations. The idea of India is shifting to another level not for better but for worse which diametrically opposed to the vision enshrined in the Preamble of India’s Constitution – freedom of expression, liberty, democracy and rule of law. It is imperative that we need to put back the derailed democracy onto the rails. It is the duty of every citizen to strive for truth that leads to freedom and justice. Truth is like a pendulum that swings between freedom and justice, as they are cardinal ethical principles that ought to be nurtured and ushered. We are in dire straits where reporting hates becomes a crime, while uttering hates is considered as prime. We live in such a context where “uttering hate speech will get you bail, while reporting will take you to jail. Dr. I. John Mohan Razu, Professor of Social Ethics
Air travel booms but airlines in trouble
uring the Covid pandemic, air travel was not possible for a full 2 years, due to which the aviation industry came to a standstill and people had to sit in their homes as no activity was taking place anywhere. Air traffic came to a halt all over the world and due to this airline companies fired several lakhs of their employees. But now that the pandemic is over, and the fear of Coronavirus is also not there, people have started roaming around. As a result, the pressure on the airlines has increased tremendously. Huge crowds have started gathering at the airports. Many people might be thinking that lack of facilities and long queues happen only in India, but they are wrong as the situation is not good in the USA and European countries. Rather, the situation there is worse than in India because the airlines there had laid off employees on a large scale during the Corona period. One figure shows that 23 lakh employees were laid off from the airline industry during the last two years. However, now the
staff shortage is so high that it is becoming difficult to handle the rush of passengers at the airports. Hundreds of flights have to be canceled or passengers are made to wait for hours. There are long queues at the security gates themselves. According to the industry, air travel has grown by more than 400 percent. On the other hand, pilots, flight attendant security personnel, drivers running airport buses, etc. are falling short. It is not possible to increase the workforce overnight, as it is a lengthy process, which may take several weeks. The way the number of air passengers has increased in the US and European countries has broken the record of the last 40 years. It is said that happiness is a matter of choice. Being happy is a decision that nyone can take at any time, which is the best policy also. The state of happiness keeps problems smaller, mood lighter, and mental stress at bay. The people of Ukraine understand this formula very well. The whole country has been troubled by the attacks of
the Russian armed forces for more than two months now. Yet a comedy club in a western Ukrainian city has been entertaining people through its laughter shows almost every night, where jokes are told about the enemy army. There is no particular comedian, anybody comes on the stage and shares a joke. One of its objectives is to reduce the tension of the local people by laughing about the enemy and reducing the troubles caused by the ongoing war. It also makes them motivated for further fighting. A survey has found that the South Indians are at the forefront of telling jokes in the office. In this matter, the people of Italy are no less if compared with others in the world. A recent LinkedIn survey has revealed that threequarters of professionals in India consider jokes to be good in the workplace, although many find them unprofessional. Still, most people feel that laughing at the workplace increases productivity, lightens the mind, and keeps the mind stress-free.
The number of adults in India is more than 100 crores, while more than 50 crore people use WhatsApp on their smartphones. That is, almost half the population of the country uses WhatsApp. True too, because WhatsApp has made life very easy. WhatsApp is used for most interactions because it is fast and easy to send photos and videos in a fraction of a second. However, many people misuse this facility and use it to increase obscenity and crime. For this reason, in view of the country’s IT law, two crores 28 lakh WhatsApp accounts had to be banned in the last year. If we talk about last month, ie May 2022, then WhatsApp blocked 19 lakh 10 thousand accounts. The WhatsApp report states that the maximum number of accounts was banned in July 2021. The number of such accounts was 30 lakh 27 thousand. WhatsApp bans accounts if someone shares obscene, defamatory, threatening, intimidating, hate speech, or objectionable content against local laws and is
reported by another user. Facebook, WhatsApp, and Instagram are owned by the same company - Meta. In the first quarter of 2022, Facebook took action against 2 crores 17 lakh people for posting violent and inciting content and removed 1 billion 88 crores of fake information from the platform. Similarly, 18 lakh posts promoting substance abuse were removed from Instagram as well. WhatsApp and other social media platforms are there for our convenience to facilitate mutual conversation and communication. These mediums should not be misused. Forwarding or sharing fake information through them is a crime, which is not in the interest of the country. These days you must have noted that there is continuous action on social media on anti-national or defamatory posts, tweets, etc. and the guilty are being booked. If you have a smartphone in your hand and you have an account on social media, it does not mean that you can write anything and sleep quietly. Think twenty times
before writing anything wrong on social media and do not post anything which is illegal or which causes harm to any individual or society. The same caution that is taken in speaking face to face, should also be taken on social media. Former Punjab Chief Minister and a probable contender for the post of Vice President of India, Captain Amarinder Singh has recently returned from a London hospital after undergoing his spinal surgery, on the other hand, former captain of the Indian Cricket team, Mahendra Singh Dhoni is getting treatment in the jungles of Jharkhand. He is getting his knees treated by a vaidya, who charges a small fee of Rs 40 only. Dhoni has been taking vaidya’s medicine for the past one month, which is prepared from a local herb. It’s a matter of choice, to get treated in the Indian jungle or in a foreign hospital. Narvijay Yadav The writer is a senior journalist & columnist. Twitter @NarvijayYadav

Learn from mistakes of parties that ruled India: PM
HYDERABAD, JUL 3 (PTI): Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday asked BJP members to learn from mistakes of the parties which ruled India for long but are now in “terminal decline”, as he emphasised on qualities such as restraint, balanced outlook and coordination among them. In his speech at the final session of the BJP national executive, Modi called upon party workers to strive to make India “shreshtha” (great) and asserted that its goal should be “triptikaran” (fulfilment) from “tushtikaran” (appeasement), something it has accused opposition parties of. “This will lead to ‘sabka vikas’ (development of all). No one should be left behind,” he said. He called for taking out “Sneh Yatra” which, BJP leader Ravi Shankar Prasad said in a press conference, will be aimed at boosting affection and coordination in society by reaching out to different sections of people.

NAGALAND POST, DIMAPUR MONDAY, JULY 4, 2022
PM Narendra Modi addresses the concluding session of the BJP’s National Executive meeting, in Hyderabad. (PTI)
Modi called for “P2 to G2” (Pro-people to good governance) in the party’s political and governance model. Taking aim at the opposition, Modi said the country was fed up with dynastic politics and dynastic parties and added that it would be difficult for them to survive long. Emphasising on the need for party workers to stay connected to people, he said they should not make fun of or jeer at the parties which are in terminal decline and instead learn from their mistakes. Recalling that he had
noted in a 2016 party meet about BJP workers having qualities of “Sevabhaav, Santulan, Sanyam, Samnway, Sakaratmak, Sadbhavana and Samvad (Service, balance, restraint, coordination, positivity, empathy and dialogue), Modi reiterated this message to BJP members in the Sunday address. The two-day executive meeting saw the party taking stock of its organisational activities and lauding the Modi government over its economic policies and overall governance. Issues such as the killing of a tailor in Udaipur by Islamic fanatics
and the Nupur Sharma row were not discussed in the meeting, though the obituary reference did mention tailor Kanhaiya Lal, party leaders said. Referring to Hyderabad as Bhagyanagar, a name with roots in the city’s Hindu cultural heritage, Modi said Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel laid the foundation of “Ek Bharat” (United India) by integrating the region into the Union and it is the BJP’s historical obligation to build ‘Shreshtha Bharat’. Everything that is good in the country belongs to every Indian, he said, asserting that the BJP believes in this philosophy and that is why it celebrates leaders like Patel, who was a Congress stalwart, and paid tributes to every prime minister through a museum dedicated to all previous PMs. The prime minister also hit back at opposition parties for questioning the BJP’s democratic credentials and asked what is the status of democracy within
their organisations. Modi asserted that his government has worked for everyone and noted that nearly 200 crore Covid vaccines doses were given to people for free across the country. India’s exports have surged and the country has received record FDI, he said. Noting the efforts of BJP governments at the Centre and in states to empower women, he said they have repeatedly expressed support for the party in elections and it should continue to work for their welfare. In his speech, Modi also referred to the BJP-led NDA’s presidential candidate Droupadi Murmu and lauded her journey from humble background and asked party MPs and MLAs to ensure that they cast valid votes as even a small error may render them invalid. Prasad asserted that numbers are heavily stacked in Murmu’s favour against Yashwant Sinha, the opposition candidate.
BJP’s Narvekar elected Speaker of Maha Assembly on 1st day of special session MUMBAI, JUL 3 (PTI): Rahul Nar vekar of the BJP was on Sunday elected Speaker of the Maharashtra Assembly during the first day of its special session. Narvekar, who polled 164 votes, defeated Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena candidate Rajan Salvi, who got 107 votes. The Speaker’s post was lying vacant since February last year after Nana Patole of the Congress resigned. Narvekar (45) is the youngest ever Assembly Speaker in the country, Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said. His father-in-law Ramraje Naik of NCP is the chairperson of the Legislative Council. The twoday special session of the 288-member House got underway in the Vidhan Bhavan in south Mumbai at 11 am on Sunday. vacancy due to the death of Sena’s Ramesh Latke. NCP legislator Narhari Zirwal could not vote as he is the deputy speaker. After the vote count, Zirwal said, “Some Shiv Sena MLAs voted against the party whip. Asked whether the mega project should be implemented under the strategic partnership model, the HAL chief only said it should be left to the businesses to find their own solution. “Once a decision is taken on the aircraft, let the manufacturer decide on its Indian partner and let them quote (the price) together. It is a possibility,” Madhavan said. “If the original equipment maker finds HAL to be comfortable to join hands with, let it come. if it finds somebody else, let them go there,” he added. In April 2019, the IAF issued an RFI (Request for Information), or an initial tender, to acquire 114 jets. The top contenders for the deal include Lockheed Martin’s F-21, Boeing’s F/A-18, Dassault Aviation’s Rafale, the Eurofighter Typhoon, Russian aircraft

Tejas, manufactured by HAL, is a single-engine and highly agile multi-role supersonic fighter aircraft capable of operating in high-threat air environments. In February last year, the defence ministry sealed a Rs 48,000 crore deal with HAL for the procurement of 83 Tejas fighter aircraft for the Indian Air Force (IAF). India has started work on the MK 2 version of the Tejas as well as on an ambitious USD 5 billion project to develop a fifth-generation Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA).

Last week, Chief of Air Staff, Air Chief Marshal VR Chaudhari told PTI that the winner of the mega project will have to ensure the transfer of technology as it would be implemented under the framework of the “Make in India” initiative. Madhavan also cited the groundwork between HAL and Dassault Aviation around a decade ago for the production of Rafale jets in India as part of negotiations for the procurement of a fleet of 126 Medium Multi-Role Combat Aircraft (MMRCA). In the original proposal, 18 planes were to be manufactured in France and 108 in India in collaboration with HAL. The final negotiations for the MMRCA continued till early 2014 but the deal could not go through. In 2016, the NDA g o ve r n m e n t s i g n e d a Euro 7.87-billion (Rs 59,000-crore) deal with France to procure 36 Rafale jets. “We did a lot of leg work then. It is learnt that the Chinese JF-17 was cheaper but could not match the technical parameters of the Tejas Mk-IA variant and the offer of maintenance of the Su-30 fleet as proposed by India. A team of high-ranking officials and experts is expected to visit India soon to take forward the procurement process. Malaysia is procuring the aircraft to replace its ageing fleet of Russian MiG-29 fighter planes. The number of aircraft that Malaysia is looking at procuring is not immediately clear. NEW DELHI, JUL 3 (PTI): Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) is better placed to partner with any foreign military plane maker to produce combat jets in India under the ambitious Multi-Role Fighter Aircraft (MRFA) programme, Chairman and Managing Director of the state-run aerospace behemoth, R Madhavan, said on Sunday. The gover nment is moving forward to procure 114 jets for the Indian Air Force (IAF) at a whopping cost of USD 20 billion, billed as one of the world’s biggest military acquisition programmes in recent years. It was initially indicated that the aircraft will be procured under the strategic partnership (SP) model that mandates a foreign manufacturer to join hands with an Indian company to manufacture major military platforms. The top HAL executive also said the government should decide on the aircraft for the IAF under the MRFA project and it should be left to the manufacturer of the plane to decide on its Indian partner. “With our infrastructure and experience, HAL is much better placed to join hands with a foreign entity to produce the aircraft. Definitely, we are looking at being the Indian entity for

Russia claims capture of pivotal city in eastern Ukraine
KYIV, JUL 3 (AP): Russia’s defense minister said Russian forces took control Sunday of the last major Ukrainian-held city in Ukraine’s Luhansk province, bringing Moscow closer to its stated goal of seizing all of Ukraine’s Donbas region. Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu told President Vladimir Putin that Russia’s troops together with members of a local separatist militia “have established full control over the city of Lysychansk,” a ministry statement said. Taking Lysychansk constitutes “the liberation of the Luhansk People’s Republic,” one of two separatist regions in Ukraine that Russia recognizes as sovereign, the statement said. Ukrainian fighters spent weeks trying to defend Lysychansk and to keep it from falling to Russia, as neighbouring Sievierodonetsk did a week ago. A presidential adviser predicted late Saturday that the city’s fate could be deter-

Al Jazeera journo killing: bullet handed to US
Shireen Abu Akleh
RAMALLAH, JUL 3 (IANS): A senior Palestinian official has said that the bullet which killed veteran Palestinian-American journalist Shireen Abu Akleh in May had been handed to a US team for examination. The bullet won’t be handed to the Israeli authorities and the competent Palestinian authorities have agreed to hand it to the US, Palestinian AttorneyGeneral Akram Al-Khatib told the official Palestinian news agency WAFA, Xin-
hua news agency reported. That followed a Palestinian probe in May, which said Abu Akleh was “deliberately” shot by an Israeli sniper but was denounced by Israel as “a blatant lie”. Israel has requested Palestine to hand over the bullet for a joint investigation, but was refused. “We agreed to allow a specialised US team of experts to conduct a technical examination of the bullet and the bullet has been handed over to the team who recently arrived in the country for this purpose,” Al-Khatib said. The examination will be conducted at the US embassy in Jerusalem, he added. Abu Akleh, a 51-yearold Al Jazeera journalist who was born in Jerusalem, was killed by a live bullet in the head on May 11 while reporting in West Bank.
sychansk. They attacked the city with incomprehensibly cruel tactics,” Luhansk governor Serhiy Haidai said on the Telegram messaging app. “They suffer significant losses, but stubbornly advance. They are gaining a foothold in the city.” A river separates Lysychansk from Sievierodonetsk. Oleksiy Arestovych, an adviser to the Ukrainian
president, said during an online interview late Saturday that Russian forces had managed for the first time to cross the river from the north, creating a “threatening” situation. Arestovych said they had not reached the centre of the city but that the course of the fighting indicated the battle for Lysychansk would be decided by Monday.
Luhansk and neighbouring Donetsk are the two provinces that make up the Donbas, where Russia has focused its offensive since pulling back from northern Ukraine and the capital, Kyiv, in the spring. Pro-Russia separatists have held portions of both eastern provinces since 2014, and Moscow recognises all of Luhansk and Donetsk as sovereign republics. Syria’s government said Wednesday that it would also recognize the “independence and sovereignty” of the two areas. An occupation of Lysychansk would open the way for the Russians to move west into Donetsk province, where the sizable Ukrainian-held city of Slovyansk has come under rocket attacks several times since Russia invaded Ukraine on Feb. 24. Mayor Vadym Lyakh said new attacks Sunday killed an unspecified number of people. Elsewhere in the war,
the exiled mayor of the Russia-occupied city of Melitopol said Sunday that Ukrainian rockets destroyed one of four Russian military bases in the city. The governor of the Belgorod region in western Russia said four people were killed Sunday by fragments of an intercepted Ukrainian missile. The Russian Defense Ministry said two Ukrainian drones were shot down over the city of Kursk. Kursk regional governor Roman Starovoit said the town of Tetkino, on the Ukraine border, came under mortar fire. The leader of neighbouring Belarus, a Russian ally, claimed Saturday that Ukraine fired missiles at military targets on Belarusian territory several days ago but all were intercepted by an air defense system. President Alexander Lukashenko described the alleged strike as a provocation and noted that no Belarusian soldiers were fighting in Ukraine.

fighting vehicles, 801 artillery systems, 246 multiple launch rocket systems, 105 air defence systems, 217 warplanes, 187 helicopters, 654 operational and tactical level UAVs, 144 cruise missiles, 15 warships/boats, 2,618 other vehicles and tanker trucks, and 64 pieces of special equipment”. “The enemy suffered the greatest losses in the past day in the Kramatorsk and Bakhmut directions,” the General Staff said.
SL Navy nabs 51 for trying to escape to Australia S.Korea’s new Covid cases stay C O L O M B O, J U L 3 (PTI): The Sri Lankan Navy on Sunday nabbed 51 people who were planning to illegally migrate from the island nation to Australia through the sea route, according to an official statement, a fourth such incident in the last one week owing to the ongoing economic crisis in the nation. According to the Sri Lankan Navy, all those attempting to illegally migrate were arrested after a fishing trawler carrying them was seized in the eastern seas. “A search operation carried out by the Navy in the eastern seas this morning (03rd July 2022) led to the seizure of a local multi-day fishing trawler carrying 51 persons, who are suspected to be on an illegal migration attempt to a foreign country via sea,”

the statement issued by the Navy said. This was the fourth such incident in the last one week. On Saturday, a team of the Navy, the Sri Lanka Coast Guard and the Police, arrested 24 individuals, all suspected to be illegally migrating to Australia, in Marawila on
the western coast. The arrests came as they were lodged in the locality, awaiting to migrate from the island by sea, the Navy said. Similarly, on June 27 and 28 over 100 Illegal immigrants were arrested. The police said such attempts to flee the coun-
try are due to the ongoing economic crisis and have increased since the early part of this year. The government of Australia for many years now carried out local media campaigns to deter people from falling victims to immigration rackets. The nearly-bankrupt country, with an acute foreign currency crisis that resulted in foreign debt default, had announced in April that it is suspending nearly USD 7 billion foreign debt repayment due for this year out of about USD 25 billion due through 2026. Sri Lanka’s total foreign debt stands at USD 51 billion. Sri Lankans continue to languish in long fuel and cooking gas queues as the government is unable to find dollars to fund imports.
over 10,000 amid resurgence
SEOUL, JUL 3 (IANS): South Korea’s new coronavirus cases stayed above 10,000 for the second consecutive day on Sunday as the daily cases seemed to be rising again after months of subsiding. The country added 10,059 Covid-19 infections, including 191 cases from overseas, bringing the total caseload to 18,389,611, the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency (KDCA) was quoted as saying by Yonhap news agency. The country reported eight Covid-19 deaths, raising the death toll to 24,570. The fatality rate stood at 0.13 per cent. The number of critically ill patients stood at 53, the KDCA said. South Korea’s Covid-19 outbreaks have shown a downward trend after daily new cases peaked at an all-time high of over
620,000 in mid-March. But the KDCA has said the pace of decline has recently slowed down amid waning vaccine immunity and increasing social interactions following eased social distancing rules, and that a possible spike in infections lies ahead. Sunday’s figure is up by more than 3,800 from a week ago and nearly 4,000 from two weeks ago. Imported cases have remained above 100 since June 24 due to a rise in international flights. Of the 9,868 locally transmitted cases, Seoul accounted for 2,437 cases, with the surrounding Gyeonggi Province reporting 2,637 cases. There were 516 infections in Incheon, 40 km west of Seoul. The greater Seoul area accounted for 56 per cent of the total caseload.
Israel shoots down Hezbollah drones over Mediterranean China renews alert for rainstorms
J E RU S E L A M , J U L 3 (AP): The Israeli military on Saturday said it shot down three unmanned aircraft launched by the Lebanese militant group Hezbollah heading toward an area where an Israeli gas platform was recently installed in the Mediterranean Sea. The launch of the aircraft appeared to be an attempt by Hezbollah to influence US-brokered negotiations between Israel and Lebanon over their maritime border, an area that is rich in natural gas. In a statement, the Israeli said the aircraft were spotted early on and did not pose an “imminent threat.” Nonetheless, the incident drew a stern warning from Israel’s caretaker prime minister, Yair Lapid.
Israel shoots down three unarmed Hezbollah drones headed for Karish gas field.
“I stand before you at this moment and say to everyone seeking our demise, from Gaza to Tehran, from the shores of Lebanon to Syria: Don’t test us,” Lapid said in his first address to the nation since taking office on Friday. “Israel knows how to use its strength against
every threat, against every enemy.” Israel earlier this month set up a gas rig in the Karish field, which Israel says lies within part of its internationally recognised economic waters. Lebanon has claimed it is in disputed waters. Hezbollah issued a short statement, confirm-
ing it had launched three unarmed drones toward the disputed maritime issue over the Karish field on a reconnaissance mission. “The mission was accomplished and the message was received,” it said. Israel and Hezbollah are bitter enemies that fought a monthlong war in the summer of 2006. Israel considers the Iranianbacked Lebanese group its most serious immediate threat, estimating it has some 150,000 rockets and missiles aimed at Israel. The US last week said that mediator Amos Hochstein had held conversations with the Lebanese and Israeli sides. “The exchanges were productive and advanced the objective of narrowing differences between the two sides. The United
States will remain engaged with parties in the days and weeks ahead,” his office said in a statement last week. The two countries, which have been officially at war since Israel’s creation in 1948, both claim some 860 square kilometres (330 square miles) of the Mediterranean Sea. Lebanon hopes to exploit offshore gas reserves as it grapples with the worst economic crisis in its modern history. On Saturday, Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati told reporters that Lebanon received “encouraging information” regarding the border dispute but refused to comment further saying Beirut is waiting for the “written official response to the suggestions by the Lebanese side.”
BEIJING, JUL 3 (IANS): China’s National Meteorological Center on Sunday renewed a yellow alert for rainstorms in some parts of the country. From 8 a.m. Sunday to 8 a.m. Monday, rainstorms are expected in parts of Guangdong, Guangxi, Hunan and Hubei, and heavy downpours up to 140 mm may lash parts of these regions, the center was quoted as saying by Xinhua news agency. Some of these regions will also experience shortterm heavy rainfall with up to over 70 mm of hourly precipitation, accompanied by thunderstorms and gales. Parts of Henan, Anhui, Shandong and the BeijingTianjin-Hebei region are also likely to see heavy rains,

according to the center. The meteorological center has advised local governments to make appropriate preparations and check the drainage systems in cities, farmland, and fishponds. It has also suggested taking traffic control measures in road sections hit
by heavy downpours, guiding traffic in water-logged streets, and halting outdoor operations in hazardous areas. China has a fourtier, color-coded weather warning system, with red representing the most severe warning, followed by orange, yellow, and blue.
China state museum opens in India gifts 75 ambulances, 17 school buses to Nepal Hong Kong amid patriotism drive
Visitors tour the Hong Kong Palace Museum during the first day open to public in Hong Kong, Sunday.
HONG KONG, JUL 3 (AP): China’s famed Palace Museum opened a branch in Hong Kong Sunday amid a drive to build loyalty to Beijing in the former British colony that reverted to Chinese rule 25 years ago. Works of calligraphy
and paintings on silk dating back more than 1,000 years featured heavily in the exhibition, housed in a seven-story building in a newly developed harborside arts district. The delicate artworks will be returned to Beijing
for safekeeping after 30 days, but China’s Communist Party leaders want the exhibition’s cultural and political impact to linger for far longer. The opening of the exhibition came just two days after China’s leader Xi Jinping marked the anniversary of Hong Kong’s return with a visit to what is officially called the special autonomous region and a speech emphasizing Beijing’s control under its vision of “one country, two systems.” Xi praised the city for overcoming “violent social unrest” – a reference to massive pro-democracy protests in 2019 that were followed by a crackdown that has snuffed out dissent and shut down independent media.
KATHMANDU, JUL 3 (PTI): India on Sunday gifted 75 ambulances and 17 school buses to Nepal as part of its ongoing efforts to build on the “robust and longstanding” partnership between the two countries and help the Himalayan nation bolster its infrastructure in healthcare and education sectors. India’s newly-ap pointed Ambassador Naveen Srivastava handed over the keys of the vehicles in the presence of Devendra Paudel, Nepal’s Ministry of Education, Science and Technology. The gifting of 75 ambulances also marks 75 years of India’s Independence, the Indian Embassy here said. “The gifting of ambulances and school buses is part of the very robust and

strong development partnership between the two countries,” Srivastava said. This initiative has been one of the long-standing traditions of the Indian
gover nment under the Nepal-India Development Partnership Programme to bolster efforts of the Nepal government to strengthen its infrastructure in health
and education, he added. Paudel appreciated India’s various ongoing developmental projects in Nepal and said these initiatives will continue to strengthen people-to-people linkages and improve relations between the two countries. The 75 ambulances and 17 school buses will be handed over to various governmental departments and NGOs working in healthcare and education sectors in various districts in Nepal, the Indian mission said. In 2021, India had gifted 39 ambulances equipped with ventilators to Nepal as part of its efforts to help Kathmandu in its fight against the COVID-19 pandemic. Similarly, in 2020, India had gifted 41 ambu-
lances and six school buses to Nepal on the occasion of the 151st birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi. Nepal is important for India in the context of its overall strategic interests in the region, and the leaders of the two countries have often noted the age-old “Roti Beti” relationship. The land-locked country relies heavily on India for the transportation of goods and services. Nepal’s access to the sea is through India, and it imports a predominant proportion of its requirements from and through India. The India-Nepal Tr e a t y o f Pe a c e a n d Friendship of 1950 forms the bedrock of the special relations between the two countries.

Ricky Martin issued with restraining order in Puerto Rico Nepali gospel singing competition ‘Voice Hunt Season-V’ concludes A O ccording to Puerto Rican authorities, Latin pop hitmaker Ricky Martin has been issued a restraining order. The Associated Press reported earlier today (July 3) that judge Raiza Cajigas Campbell had signed off on the order on Friday (July 1), although police were unable to discern Martin’s whereabouts until a day later. Police spokesman Axel Valencia refused to tell the publication who requested the restraining o r d e r, a s t h e p a r t y ’s anonymity is secured under Puerto Rico’s domestic violence law. Further details came courtesy of Puerto Rican newspaper El Vocero, who
reported that, per legal documents obtained from the court, Martin and the petitioner dated for seven months. It’s alleged that the pair separated two months ago, but Martin did not “accept” the separation, and has repeatedly
attempted to make contact with the petitioner. The document claims that Mar tin calls the petitioner frequently, and has been seen loitering outside of his residence on at least three occasions, leading the petitioner
to fear for his safety. Martin has been ordered to refrain from making any contact with the petitioner, physically or via telecommunication, extending to emails and social media. El Vocero reports that the restraining order is set to expire on Thursday July 21, upon which Martin and the petitioner will be summoned to a formal court hearing. Valencia, h o w e v e r, t o l d T h e Associated Press that such orders are typically valid for at least one month. A judge will determine its ultimate longevity at that hearing. It’s also noted that the petitioner did not attempt
to make direct contact with police, and instead sent his request for a restraining order against Martin directly to the court. At the time of writing, Martin has not responded to the reports of his restraining order, nor the allegations made against him. Martin is best known for his 1999 hits ‘Livin’ La Vida Loca’ and ‘She’s All I Ever Had’, both of which appeared on his eponymous fifth (and first English) studio album. His latest release was the EP ‘Pausa’, which landed in May 2020 and is set to be followed up with another EP, ‘Play’, sometime this year. (NME)
A Visual Guide to PAD What Is PAD? PA D s t a n d s f o r peripheral artery disease. It’s when arteries that carry blood from your heart to distant parts of your body become narrow because of a buildup of plaque inside the vessels. This can slow down blood flow to your limbs. PAD most commonly affects your legs. PAD Symptom: Leg Pain The most common symptom is leg pain or cramps when you walk. This is called claudication. Your legs may feel heavy, numb, weak, or tired. The pain usually eases once you rest. You may have no symptoms, or very mild ones, until your arteries are more than halfway narrowed by plaque. Advanced PAD Symptoms As the condition gets worse, you may feel burning or pain in your feet even at rest. The skin on your feet may feel cool, look shiny, or change colors. Your leg hair may stop growing. You may develop sores on your feet or toes that don’t heal. Men with PAD may develop erectile dysfunction (ED). PA D S y m p t o m s A r e Common Leg cramps or tired, heavy legs are easy to mistake for other conditions. You and even your doctor may
think your pain is arthritis, general muscle aches, or just part of getting older. PAD is often overlooked and undiagnosed until your symptoms worsen. What Causes PAD? The most common cause is atherosclerosis -- a buildup of fat inside arteries. Fatty deposits can turn into plaque that narrows your arteries. This makes it hard for blood to flow to your lower body. Blood vessel inflammation, limb injuries, or radiation exposure are less common causes of PAD. What Are the Risk Factors of PAD? Some things you can manage put you at higher risk of developing PAD. These include smoking, being obese, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and diabetes. Other risk factors are out of your control. They include being older than 60, kidney disease, having a family history of heart disease, and having high levels of the amino acid homocysteine. Also, African Americans have double the risk of PAD compared to people of other races. Are There Complications of PAD? Left untreated, PAD can become severe. A foot sore could turn into gangrene
and cause you to lose your foot or leg. If you have PAD, you’re likely to have plaque build-up in other arteries too. This increases your risk of heart attack, stroke, transient ischemic attack (TIA or mini-stroke) or kidney problems. How Is PAD Diagnosed? A diagnosis starts with a physical exam, blood tests, and review of your symptoms, such as walking pain or poorly healing foot sores. Your doctor can feel for a weaker pulse in your leg arteries compared to your arms. Ultrasound scans can find narrowed or blocked arteries in your lower limbs. Other PAD Diagnosis Tests An ankle-brachial index (ABI) uses a cuff to compare blood pressure in your leg and arm. Angiography is a more invasive test where dye is injected into your arteries through a catheter tube. Doctors then use special X-rays or CT scans to scan and track your blood flow. What Are the Treatments for PAD? Some treatments can help keep PAD from getting worse. Your doctor may prescribe medication to lower cholesterol or blood pressure, or manage blood sugar if you have diabetes.
To prevent blood clots and improve blood flow, they m ay p r e s c r i b e daily aspirin or clopidog rel (Plavix). What Relieves PAD Symptoms? Yo u r d o c t o r m a y prescribe cilostazol (Pletal) or pentoxifylline (Pentoxil), medications that ease the on-and-off leg pain caused by PAD. These drugs widen narrowed vessels to ease blood flow, so you can do more activities. Can Surgery Help with PAD? If medications don’t help, your doctor may recommend surgery to treat PAD pain. Angioplasty is insertion of a tiny balloon that’s inflated to widen arteries. A tube called a stent can also be placed to hold open these vessels. Bypass surgery reroutes blood flow around blocked arteries. Your doctor can also remove blockages or inject a drug to dissolve blood clots. Living With PAD Healthy lifestyle habits help you manage PAD. Don’t smoke, manage your weight, maintain an exercise routine, and eat a low-fat diet with lots of fruits and veggies. To prevent sores,
you’ll need to take extra care of your feet to make sure they are clean and dry. You’ll also need to avoid over-thecounter cold medicines with pseudoephedrine, which constricts already-narrow arteries. Can PAD Be Prevented? Many risk factors for PAD are things you can control. If you smoke, you should try to quit, take off any extra pounds, and if you have high cholesterol, diabetes, or high blood pressure, make sure you stick with your treatment plans for those conditions. Exercise is important. Work with your doctor to come up with an exercise plan that’s right for you. Medically Reviewed by Brunilda Nazario, MD

Sainz wins British GP after huge Zhou crash BAI assures action against age-fudging
LO N D O N, J U L 3 (AGENCIES): Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz took his first Formula 1 victory at the end of an extraordinary British Grand Prix packed full of incident and drama. The Spaniard benefited from questionable strategy calls from Ferrari, which cost his team-mate Charles Leclerc the win and a chance to revive his title hopes. Lewis Hamilton was in the battle for victory but
finished third behind Red Bull’s Sergio Perez after a frantic final final nine laps following a late safety car. Leclerc could finish only fourth and Ferrari missed the opportunity to make up significant ground in the title race on a bad day for championship leader Max Verstappen. Take steps against office-bearers of rifle clubs possessing more than two arms: MHA to states NEW DELHI, JUL 3 (PTI): The Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has directed the states and Union territories to take immediate steps against the office-bearers of rifle associations and clubs who are possessing more than two guns in violation of laws and ensure that they deposit the extra arms at the nearest police station forthwith. In a communication to chief secretaries of all states and UTs, MHA said according to Arms (Amendment) Act, 2019, those possessing more than two firearms are bound to deposit the extra weapons to the officer incharge of the nearest police station. Sportspersons were given a relaxation from this provision of the law by the
MHA through a notification dated February 2020. However, it has been brought to the notice of the ministry that in contravention of the said provision, some states are allowing the members of rifle clubs and rifle associations (licensed or recognised by the Centre) to keep more than two firearms in their individual capacity by misinterpreting the provisions of the Arms Act. Objecting to such violations, the MHA conveyed to the states and Union territories that no exemption is available to the members of rifle clubs and rifle associations in their individual capacity and the general limit of two firearms in accordance with the Arms Act must be followed.

NEW DELHI, JUL 3 (IANS): Badminton Association of India secretary Sanjay Mishra has assured players and parents that the association will not tolerate any age-fudging and would take strict action against those found guilty. Mishra flew down to Mohali on Saturday to personally interact with parents during the All India U-13 Ranking tournament and spent about an hour hearing the grievances of
the parents who were protesting against a bunch of players whom they claimed were overage. After the meeting, Mishra assured them that the BAI ids of the two players, who were found guilty of submitting questionable documents during registration, would be cancelled while a detailed investigation would be carried out against other players named by the parents. “Further appropriate action would be
taken on those found guilty after the Age-Fraud Committee meeting to decide the quantum of action,” Mishra said in a release. There was talk about whether the tournament that resumed after the meeting would be stripped of ranking points. But Mishra took the opportunity to clarify that no such decision was made by BAI and the organisers had no authority to take a call on such an important issue.

Having cleared any stages of UPSC/NPSC does not necessarily signify the quality of teaching of a faculty. In NICSE’s decade long experience in NAGALAND, ASSAM & DELHI, we have observed that no matter how many times and how many stages a faculty has cleared UPSC/NPSC, all that matters most to become an excellent teacher in this field are, depth of knowledge, teaching skills, ability to predict questions, ability to micro-analyse a topic and ability to inculcate every subject matter in the classroom in the simplest manner. These form the basic selection criterion for a faculty at NICSE. Becoming an excellent teacher and cracking an exam are two different ball games. India 125/3; extend lead to 257 runs on Day 3
BIRMINGHAM, JUL 3 (PTI/IANS): India were 125 for three at stumps against England on the third day of the rescheduled fifth Test here on Sunday. Having taken a firstinnings lead of 132 runs, the visitors have extended their overall lead to 257 with seven wickets remaining in their second innings. A t c l o s e o f p l ay, Cheteshwar Pujara and Rishabh Pant were batting on 50 and 30 respectively. India bowled out England for 284 in their first innings. Jonny Bairstow was the most successful batter for England as he smashed 106 off 140 balls. He added 66 with skipper Ben Stokes (25) before forging a 92-run partnership with Sam Billings (36). The Indians’ made 416 all out in their first innings. Earlier, England resumed the day at 84 for five and were bowled out for 284 in 61.3 overs with Bairstow making a belligerent 106. Sam Billings (36) en route to his third Test century in as many matches. But it wasn’t enough to avoid conceding a handy lead to India. He continued from where he left off in lunch, clipping Shardul Thakur in the gap between deep midwicket and deep mid-on for a boundary. From the other end, Billings struck Bumrah for boundaries through fine-leg and third-man
to keep England’s runflow continuing. Bairstow reached his century with a crunchy back-foot punch off Thakur square through the off-side, with Ravindra Jadeja slipping on the boundary and allowing the ball to cross the rope for a boundary. Adesanya beats Cannonier to retain UFC middleweight title
Adesanya (left) made the sixth defence of his middleweight title.
LONDON, JUL 3 (AGENCIES): Israel Adesanya outpointed Jared Cannonier over five rounds to retain his middleweight title at UFC 276 in Las Vegas. Adesanya, 32, used his superior movement and control of distance to out-strike Cannonier and secure a unanimous decision victory, BBC report stated. Following the win, the New Zealander called out Alex Pereira, who beat Sean Strickland earlier in the night. “We know who’s next. I’ll put him on skates,” said Adesanya. The fight has a backstory in that the Brazilian holds two victories over
Adesanya in kickboxing before the pair transitioned to MMA. In the co-main event, Alexander Volkanovski retained his featherweight title with a unanimous win over Max Holloway. The Australian’s slick movement and counterpunching was the difference over five rounds as he beat his American counterpart for a third time, bringing their epic rivalry to a conclusion. Since Adesanya became middleweight champion in 2019, he has dominated the division, outclassing every type of fighter he has come up against. In Cannonier, he faced an opponent who
has won five of his past six UFC fights, while displaying ferocious knockout power. Despite Cannonier’s run, he was a heavy pre-fight underdog with bookmakers, with Adesanya saying in he saw nothing in the American’s game which he had not faced before. The difference between the two was evident from the start. While Cannonier jogged to the cage with intensity, Adesanya paid tribute to WWE’s The Undertaker, wearing a widebrimmed hat, carrying an urn and walking slowly towards the octagon with his head bowed.
with the former surviving an lbw appeal off Bumrah via DRS. Bumrah and Jadeja combined to concede only six in four overs of sustained pressure. The beneficiary of that tightness was Mohammed Shami, who delivered the breakthrough for India with the first ball of his spell to end Bairstow’s knock at 106. Further action under process,” Quraishi tweeted. The AIFF follows a zero-tolerance policy on indiscipline. As an initial action, the Federation has provisionally suspended the individual pending further investigation. AIFF has asked the concerned individual to stop all contact with the team, return to India immediately, and be physically present for further investigations upon his arrival,” said the AIFF.
Shami, Bairstow couldn’t resist driving hard away from his body and gave a healthy edge to Kohli at first slip, who directed a flying kiss immediately towards Barmy Army fans. India then peppered Broad with short-pitched stuff and in an attempt to break free, he skied one high in the air off Siraj, giving a simple catch to wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant. Siraj got his third scalp when Billings played-on while trying to guide the ball through the third man, departing for 36. He then ended England’s innings when Potts nicked to second slip for a low catch, with replays taking a long time to decide whether the ball had hit the ground or Shreyas Iyer’s finger was on the ground before the catch. BRIEF SCORES: India 1st innings: 416 and 125/3 in 45 overs (Cheteshwar Pujara 50 batting, Rishabh Pant 30 batting) England 1st innings: 284 all out in 61.3 overs (Jonny Bairstow 106; Jasprit Bumrah 3/68, Mohammed Siraj 4/66).
