Genomic sequencing: Delta Variant dominant in state

KOHIMA, JUL 3 (NPN): Department of Health & Family Welfare (H&FW) in its weekly bulletin released on Saturday informed the dominant virus in Nagaland was found to be the ‘Delta Variant’ as per genome sequencing of samples of Covid-19 cases. On June 10, a total of 98 samples were sent for genome sequencing at National institute of Biomedical Genomics (NIBG), Kalyani, West Bengal of which, 93 were identified as the Delta variant; two of Kappa variant and one Alpha variant, while results of two were awaited. DIMAPUR, JUL 3 (NPN): State chief minister Neiphiu Rio on Saturday called on union home minister Amit Shah in New Delhi and reportedly discussed matters related to development of Nagaland. In a tweet, Rio thanked Shah for his “constant support” for Nagaland and its citizens. The chief minister expressed gratitude to union home minister “especially for his personal concern in our collective fight against the #COVID19 pandemic.” Meanwhile, Rio Friday met his Assam counterpart Himanta Biswa Sarma in New Delhi and reportedly discussed “strategic matters” including border management and development. Sarma tweeted, “today in New Delhi met Hon CM Nagaland Sri @Neiphiu_ Rio. We discussed issues of mutual interest and how the two governments can work together and collaborate on strategic matters including border management & development”. As reported, Union Home Minister, Amit Shah is scheduled to visit Meghalaya on July 14 and July 15 to chair a meeting with the chief ministers of the North Eastern states on various issues including the boundary disputes between states in the region.

gressive testing and identify various viruses and to create awareness among the public so that they realise that they were dealing with a more potent and dangerous virus. Dr. Tina also expressed regret that after over a year of being under pandemic, people have become complacent and casual in adhering to Covid protocols. She warned that the current wave was worse than the first because, once the virus entered a person’s body, it begins to replicate, thus resulting in faster transmission. To a query on the efficacy of Covaxin and Covishield against Delta variant, Dr. Tina said that the

two vaccines, as claimed by medical experts, are effective against the Delta variant. In this regard, she was hopeful that more people would come forward to get vaccinated that testing facility would also be ramped up. Asked about low turnout for testing, Dr Tina opined that , “as long as testing is being charged, nobody will come forward. We want to increase testing facility but I don’t think anybody would like to come forward if it’s beyond one’s means.” The only way, she suggested was to make testing free so that people would come forward. She also informed that the department will be sending more Covid samples for genome sequencing-- 15 samples from each district. She said that since NIBG was conducting genome sequencing for the whole country, it may take time for the result to come. Dr. Tina also informed that samples are sent based on certain criterion such as PCR, CT values and viral load etc.

DIMAPUR, JUL 3 (NPN): The Covid-19 cases in the State has seen a gradual decline with 623 cases being reported this week (June 26July 2) as compared to the previous week (June 19-25) that recorded 662 cases. The state’s weekly positivity rate also dropped from 9 per cent to 7 per cent. According Health & Family Welfare (H&FW) department’s weekly bulletin, the state witnessed a sharp decline in positive cases in June this year (3559 cases) as compared to the worst phase of the second wave that gripped the state in May (7704 cases). H o w e v e r, H & F W pointed out that two district recorded a weekly sample positivity rate of over 10%-Mokokchung 19% and Kohima 15% while Longleng reported zero cases in the past week. It also noted that Dimapur, Kohima and Mokokchung showed an increase in new cases as compared to the previous week. The department said that 43% of all positive cases reported in 2021 has been from

Dimapur, followed by Kohima (30%) and Mokokchung (9%) while 21 to 30 year age group had the maximum positive cases at 27%. This signifies the role of young people in transmission of the virus, it said. Further, in addition to State SOP, the department has also come up with core indicators that will be used to assess the situational level of districts-- situation level of ‘0’ to ‘4’ where ‘0’ represents no active cases in last 28 days and ‘4’ an uncontrolled situation. State logs 69 fresh cases, 1 death: Nagaland on Saturday registered 69 fresh Covid-19 positive cases and one death. Of the fresh cases, 19 were from Kohima, Dimapur-14, Mokokchung-12, six in Zunheboto, five each in Mon, Phek and Wokha, two in Tuensang and one on Kiphire, taking the total caseload to 25451. Further, one more patient succumbed to the infection in Dimapur, pushing the death toll to 499 (14 non-Covid deaths but with positivity).

NEW DELHI, JUL 3 (AGENCIES): In a development that will reignite demands in India for an independent probe into the controversial Rafale deal, a French judge has been appointed to lead a “highly sensitive” judicial investigation into alleged “corruption and favouritism” in the Rs 59,000 crore Rafale fighter jet deal with India, French investigative website Mediapart reported. Following the development, Congress Saturday urged Prime Minister Modi to come forward and order a Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) probe into the Rafale deal. “Corr uption in the Rafale deal has come out clearly now. The stand of the Congress party and Rahul Gandhi has been vindicated today after the French government has ordered a probe,” Congress chief spokesperson Randeep Surjewala told reporters at a press conference. Mediapart said the probe into the inter-governmental deal signed in 2016

was formally opened on June 14. “A judicial probe into suspected corruption has been opened in France over the 7.8-billion-euro sale to India in 2016 of 36 Dassault-built Rafale fighter aircraft,” the Mediapart reported on the latest development on the controversial deal. It said the investigation has been initiated by the national financial prosecutors’ office (PNF). The judicial probe has been ordered by France’s national financial prosecutors’ office, following Mediapart’s fresh reports in April of alleged wrongdoings in the deal as well as a complaint filed by French NGO Sherpa that specialises in financial crime. “The highly sensitive probe into the inter-governmental deal signed off in 2016 was formally opened on June 14th,” the report said. Mediapart journalist Yann Philippin, who filed a series of reports on the deal, said a first complaint was “buried” in 2019 by a former PNF chief.

KOHIMA, JUL 3 (NPN): Hundreds of womenfolk under the aegis of Konyak Nyupuh Sheko Khong (KNSK)

on Saturday staged silent protest at KNSK office Mon HQ against the alleged rape and assault on a minor girl in Mon district on June 20. After staging the pro-

test, the womenfolk marched towards the DC office and handed over five-five charter of demand. Expressing deep anguish over the incident, the KNSK demanded fast track investigation into the alleged rape incident, not to grant bail to the accused for fair trail and not to tamper evidence. KNSK, apex women body of Konyak community, also demanded that the accused be dealt with as per the strict provision of the law besides compensation and justice to the victim. Similar protests were staged in all the units of KNSK in Mon district.

Konyak Union president Howing, Konyak Students Union vice president Yuwang and KNSK advisor Atoi Konyak also addressed the gathering. Meanwhile, in solidarity with the victim, all the business establishments at Mon town remained closed. Movement of public transportation was also restricted from 6 am till 12 noon. A joint appeal letter signed by KNSK, KU and KSU was also submitted to the SP Mon to “meticulously investigate” the case and to establish authenticity of the age of the six accused that were arrested.

DIMAPUR, JUL 3 (NPN): Nagaland State Commission for Women (NSCW) has appealed to all the citizens to ensure and secure safety and dignity of women in Nagaland. In a press release, NSCW chairperson, Khrienuo Tachu, stated that crime against women, especially domestic violence, sexual harassment and mental violence, was on the rise amid the pandemic. NSCW said that it was appalled to know that even gang-rape had seeped into the society and condemned the act outrightly. It said that steps were

taken with law enforcing agencies to award severest punishments and nonbailable warrants to the perpetrators. The commission has, however, called for positive mindset change towards women and the girl child. It said that a just society must ensure the safety and well-being of women against all odds, not just airing condemnations after crimes against women were committed. NSCW noted that outside court settlements were harming the Naga women more than ever as it compromised with the future safety and security of women.

Further, NSCW expressed pain that many 2020 returnees had gone back to the metros for earning pittance in non-liveable accommodations, posing themselves to vulnerable situations often times. As such, it said a replay of 2020 cases of molestations, poverty and distress calls were on the rise again. NSCW has also appealed for better networking of student organisations, pastors and other stakeholders of Nagas living outside the state. NSCW said it was also coordinating and availing assistance from all stakeholders outside the state during emergencies.

DIMAPUR, JUL 3 (NPN): Lotha Youth Hoho (LYH) and Lotha Students’ Union (LSU) Saturday announced their decision to “completely shut down the network towers and offices” of all the telecom/network service providers within Wokha district for a minimum on July 4 and July 5. LYH and LSU through joint media cell said they took the decision during a joint meeting on June 29, 2021 in response to the “insincerity, lackadaisical and failure” to deliver the commitments made by the telecom/ network service providers of Wokha.

After shutting down the offices for two days, the two bodies said they would initiate “any appropriate measure” if they did not receive any positive response from the service providers. The two bodies stated that the telecom companies failed to uphold their commitments made on August 4, 2020 and October 19, 2020 when they assured to provide good services to the consumers. Meanwhile, LYH and LSU has sought cooperation from all the consumers and appealed to them to bear the inconveniences during the shutdown.

DIMAPUR, JUL 3 (NPN): Expressing pain over the mysterious deaths of two young upcoming citizens of Nagaland-- Rosy Sangma and her nephew Samuel Sangma, the Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee (NPCC) has demanded that the state government file an FIR and also pay Rs. 10 lakhs each to the bereaved family from the public exchequer. In a statement, NPCC president K. Therie said that NPCC secretary Temjenyanger Longkumer and NPCC chairman minority department Rajesh Sethi’s finding on the cause of death of Rosy, an air hostess, on June 24 at Alpha Hospital Gururgram was “suspicious”. MKPON disappointed over exclusion DIMAPUR: Mech Kachari Public Organisation Nagaland (MKPON) has expressed disappointment over the exclusion of Kachari tribe in the photography competition called by the art & culture department to commemorate 75 years of India’s Independence. In a press release, MKPON general secretary Dharma Dhaj Sonowal stated that the Kacharis have been participating in the Hornbill Festival every year which the department was well aware of. MKPON also pointed out that Kachari tribe has been mentioned among the 16 tribes of Nagaland. It further stated that the existence of Kachari Ruins in Dimapur was enough to prove that Kacharis were among one of the recognised tribes of Nagaland. The MKPON has therefore requested the responsible department “not to sideline” the Kacharis from the rest of the recognised tribes of Nagaland.

ANHTU units ask deptt to release salary DIMAPUR: All Nagaland Hindi Teachers’ Union (ANHTU) Dimapur unit has claimed that Hindi teachers appointed in the year 2012-13 have not received salary since March 2021. In a press release, ANHTU Dimapur unit president, Petemo Lotha and general secretary, H Daniel Sema said that the teachers are in “deep financial crisis and in miserable condition”. Therefore, the unit has appealed the department to disburse the four months pending salaries at the earliest. Meanwhile, ANHTU Zunheboto unit has also appealed to the state government and the responsible department to prioritise the long issues of Hindi teachers appointed in the year 2012-2013

In a press release, ANHTU Zunheboto unit president Aviho Chishi stated that with the irregularity of salary, the teachers were “facing untold hardship even to fulfil our basic needs”. It also said that the pandemic had doubled the problems of teachers as it claimed that credits were to be found no more. In this regard, the union urged the state government and responsible department to note down the grievances of CSS Hindi teachers and release the pending salary of four months.

Joint plantation drive conducted at Chiechama

DIMAPUR: Regional Response Centre (RRC), National Disaster Response Force (12th NDRF), Chiechama in collaboration with Fire & Emergency Service (F&ES) and Chiechama Village Youth Organisation (CVYO) organised a plantation drive on June 30. Introduction of plantation drive was shared by deputy commandant, 12th NDRF P. Nupajao Singh who stated that the purpose of the plantation drive was to protect the surrounding environment by planting more trees. He also stated the drive was part of the 12th NDRF’s mission to plant 1 lakh trees and shared about the mitigation of disaster, technique and timely intervention. Chiechama village council chairman, Mhalezolie Metha appreciated NDRF and

F&ES for inviting the village council to be a part of the initiative. F&ES inspector general, Neilasa Sopfii shared about the purpose and mission of NDRF and impressed upon the history and importance of setting up of RRC and Regional Emergency Management Training Institute (REMTI) in the state to tackle natural disasters while imparting awareness to the public on disaster management. Unclaimed dead body at DHD morgue

DIMAPUR: One unclaimed body has been kept at district civil hospital morgue, Dimapur, police informed Saturday. According to Dimapur police PRO, one person identified as Kanish Namashutry (23), son of. Rosho Raj, resident of Tinkary, Karimganj in Assam had passed away at a private hospital on July 2 while undergoing treatment for injuries reportedly sustained by a running train on June 27, 2021. PRO said the body has been shifted to district civil hospital morgue for conduct of post mortem examination.

He was one of the stalwarts of Nagaland whose leadership is manifested in the contributions he made to society with his strong political views. He was a scholarly person, exceptionally well read, articulate and spoke with much authority and knowledge. His oratory skill was admired and appreciated by all. As Member of the 13th Nagaland Legislative Assembly, and as Secretary General of ENLU, he was an asset who seamlessly worked with wide range of knowledge in every sphere. He has left behind a legacy of leadership. He was unanimously selected as Secretary General by the ENLU in 2018 and continued to serve in the same capacity till his demise. As Secretary General of the ENLU, Late Toshi Wungtung’s contribution is immeasurable who worked with his ever willing energetic spirit. He was instrumental in re-organisation of Village Guards and initiated many development projects with various Ministries at the Central Government level for development of Eastern Nagaland. For the ENPO youngsters our beloved Toshi Wungtung was their “Kokai” who inspired them with his sharp mind, wit, humour and his leadership. He was their “go to Kokai”. These youngsters will live on to tell the grand tale of their Kokai Toshi Wungtung with hearts full of gratitude and pride. Late Toshi Wungtung served many years in social service for Nagaland and particularly for Eastern Nagaland by leading from the front for common cause with his fearless and indomitable spirit. His cheerful presence will be missed by Nagas as a whole. In this time of grief, the whole Eastern Nagaland stands together with the bereaved family members. DIMAPUR: Sovima Village Council (SVC) has vehemently condemned the act meted out by some miscreants who threatened some butchers at Neiphezou Khel Sovima, adjacent to Diphupar B village, by firing automatic weapons at weighing scales and in the air on July 2. In a condemnation note, Sovima village head GB, Thepfukeduo, alleged that the miscreants had threatened butchers on the pretext that the pork they purchased in the morning was less than the amount they paid for. While cautioning all butchers not to tamper with weighing scales, the village council condemned the act of the miscreants, “who claimed to be from a particular faction of the Naga underground, firing in a public place creating immense fear in the minds of peace-loving citizens of the area”. SVC expressed doubt that the meat purchased by miscreants was less than they paid for “as the portion was taken away and returned later.” It said that if it was not properly weighed and the purchasers were “shortshifted”, it was equally condemnable. However, the council stated the issue did not justify carrying of automatic weapons and firing in public areas, adding that such terror activities should not be condoned, tolerated or forgiven in its jurisdiction. Further, stating that butchers under the village area to provide accurate amount of meat, SVC warned that stringent action would be taken against them to the extent of asking the administration to penalise defaulters or cancel their trade licences. Meanwhile, the council has appealed “to all NNPGs not to resort to such dastardly acts” and to strictly monitor the activities of their cadres and “prevent them from vitiating the peaceful atmosphere” in the area.

DIMAPUR: RTI activists ST Yapang Lkr and Tiawapang Lkr under the RTI Initiative Nagaland, who visited Dr. Imkongliba Memorial District Hospital (IMDH) Mokokchung to assess the COVID-19 preparedness in the district, have urged the responsible authority to increase the number of lifesaving equipment in the hospital ahead of the imminent arrival of third wave. In a press release, the two RTI activists stated that there were only four ICU, four ventilators and 15 Oxymeters in the district hospital. The duo claimed that as per RTI disclosure, an amount of Rs 2, 55,080 was allocated to combat COVID-19 in the district, which they said was “totally an unfair amount of allocation to a district hospital”. The two RTI activists said that for the year 2018-2019 and 20192020, about Rs. 1,778 crore for various schemes and programmes was sanctioned for Nagaland by

the ministry of health and family welfare. Further, the duo urged the government to allocate in a year an amount of Rs. 50 lakh to a district hospital, Rs.10 lakh to CHC, Rs.3 lakh to PHC and Rs. 1 lakh to community sub-centres. Claiming that there were other funds for hospital, the two activists further urged the government to permanently increase the number of ICU and ventilators in a district hospital to 10 each and five ICU and three ventilators in CHC. They claimed that as per the information received, there were huge discrepancies in contrast to the massive funds poured into Nagaland by the Centre. For the year 2018-2019 and 2019-2020, they claimed the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare sanctioned about Rs. 1,778 crores for Nagaland for various schemes and programmes. The duo informed that more RTI initiatives would be initiated to assess whether the funds were implemented properly or not.

DoSE to organise special admission drive

DIMAPUR: With a moderate increase in dropout rate of students during the year 2020 due to the pandemic and in order to address the issue, Department of School Education has extended the timeline for admissions to all classes up to August 13. In this regard, DoSE has informed that it would be organising a “special admission drive” from July 5 to August 13. Therefore, DoSE has directed school heads to contact parents/ guardian of dropout students with the help of teachers/NGOs/student bodies/Church leaders and encourage admitting their children to appropriate classes and resuming of schooling. The department also requested the cooperation and support of public leaders/NGOs/student bodies/Church leaders in creating awareness among parents of dropout students in this regard and to assist them in getting their children admitted at nearest government schools.

Must find middle ground for talks with ULFA: Sarma

New Delhi, Jul 3 (PTI): Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Saturday said he is hopeful of finding a middle path to start peace talks with the banned ULFA as the insurgent group has been demanding that negotiations should be centred around “sovereignty” whereas he took oath to protect India’s “sovereignty”. Sarma said if the ULFA and the government can find an honourable position, then the talks can be started. “We are in a very peculiar situation. (ULFA chief) Paresh Baruah wants to talk on the issue of (Assam’s) sovereignty, while I have taken oath as chief minister to protect the country’s sovereignty. To start the talks, either he has to change his stand or I have to defy my oath. “Since Paresh Baruah is not changing his stand and if I defy my oath, I will have to leave my post, we

will have to find a middle ground,” he told reporters here. Sarma said that “some people” are talking to Baruah so that he can come to the negotiating table. “I am hopeful that something could be found so that we can start the peace dialogue,” he said. Sarma said that he understands the compulsion of Baruah but at the same time the ULFA chief should also understand his (CM’s) compulsion. Sarma after taking oath on May 10 had appealed to the hardline faction of the

ULFA, headed by Baruah, to come forward for peace talks and resolve the more than three decade old insurgency problem in the state. Earlier this week, the chief minister told PTI in Guwahati that peace talks with the ULFA can progress if it is prepared to discuss grievances and issues other than sovereignty. Sarma had said there are many well-intended people who are working on the issue with the ULFA chief to convince him to discuss something substantial without insisting on (inclusion of) the word (sovereignty). “The word is not a terminology for us but is solemn and we take oath that it is our duty to protect our sovereignty and not cede an inch of our land. For him also there is a compulsion, so there is a need to arrive at a certain definition which can address the issues of both concerned,” he had said.

northeast Tripura extends COVID curfew till July 9 Agartala, Jul 3 (PTI) : The Tripura government has extended the COVID curfew from 2 pm to 5 am in Agartala and eight other urban local bodies (ULBs) till July 9, a notification said. However, the night curfew from 6 pm to 5 am has been lifted from the villages. The COVID curfew in the ULBs, first imposed on May 16 and then repeatedly extended, was scheduled to end on July 2. “The COVID curfew will remain in force in the jurisdiction of Agartala Municipal Corporation (AMC) and eight other ULBs till July 9,” the notification issued by Chief Secretary Kumar Alok said. Besides Agartala, the restrictions have also been imposed in the municipal councils of Ranirbazar, Udaipur, Kailashahar, Dharanagar, Khowai, Belonia, and nagar panchayats of Jirani and Panisagar.

The recovery rate of the state stood at 89.79%, according to the bulletin of the state health department. GANGTOK, JUL 3 (PTI): Sikkim reported 178 fresh COVID- 19 cases, raising the tally to 20,955, a health department bulletin said on Saturday. The death toll remained at 308. The northeastern state now has 2,058 active cases, while 18,336 people have recovered from the disease so far, it said. Of the new cases, West Sikkim registered 64 infections, followed by 60 in East Sikkim, 51 in South Sikkim and three in North Sikkim. It has conducted 1,66,083 sample tests thus far, the bulletin added.

New Delhi, Jul 3 (PTI): Union minister Jitendra Singh on Saturday said there is a progressive decline in COVID-19 cases in all eight northeastern states but cautioned that the fall in active cases must be followed with greater thrust on vaccination and strict observance of relevant protocols. At a review meeting with health secretaries of all the eight northeastern states – Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura and Sikkim – Singh expressed satisfaction that they were catching up with the national average in terms of the decline in positivity rate.

Rafale Scam: BJP calls Rahul a ‘pawn’ New Delhi, Jul 3 (PTI): The BJP alleged on Saturday that Rahul Gandhi is acting as an agent of rival defence companies and being used as a “pawn”, and also claimed he and the Congress keep raking up allegations of corruption in the Rafale deal in an attempt to “weaken” India. At a press conference, BJP spokesperson Sambit Patra also played down the appointment of a judge in France to lead a judicial investigation into the alleged corruption and favouritism in the Rs 59,000 crore deal, saying the development was outcome of a complaint by an NGO and should not be seen as a matter of corruption. This is akin to a competent authority in India writing down in a file that “please act accordingly” when a matter is brought before him, Patra said and accused the Congress of spreading lies and misconceptions over the issue. ceptions, he said. “The way Rahul Gandhi is behaving, it will not be an exaggeration to say that he is being used as a pawn by competing companies. ED issues fresh summons to Anil Deshmukh in money laundering case Mumbai, Jul 3 (PTI): Former Maharashtra home minister Anil Deshmukh has been issued fresh summons by the ED for appearance on July 5 in a money laundering case investigation being conducted against him and others, officials said on Saturday. They said this is the third notice issued to the NCP leader for deposing before the investigating officer of the case. Deshmukh has been asked to record his statement at the central agency’s office in south Mumbai on Monday. Deshmukh (72), had skipped the two earlier summons citing his “vulnerability” to COVID-19 as the reason for non-compliance in his last communication to the agency. He instead offered the Enforcement Directorate (ED) to record his statement through video conferencing. The summons are in connection with the criminal case

The first summons followed raids conducted by the ED at his premises in Mumbai and Nagpur apart from that of his aides and some others last month. The agency subsequently arrested two of his aides in this case, personal secretary Sanjeev Palande (51) and personal assistant Kundan Shinde (45). They are in ED custody till July 6.

The agency, sources said, apart from the present case wants to question Deshmukh about his and his family members’ alleged links with certain shell companies that were being used to launder funds much before the present allegations of bribery in the Mumbai Police setup came to light. The ED case against Deshmukh and others was made out after the CBI booked him in a corruption case related to allegations of at least Rs 100 crore bribery made by former Mumbai Police commissioner Param Bir Singh. In his letter to Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray after he was removed from the police commissioner’s post, Singh had alleged that Deshmukh had asked suspended Mumbai Police assistant police inspector (API) Sachin Waze to extort over Rs 100 crore a month from bars and restaurants in Mumbai.

Covid will be reduced to an endemic in future: Experts New Delhi, Jul 3 (PTI): Cases of COVID-19 might be declining steadily but as the virus is mutating, attaining that magical zero figure in Delhi is unlikely, experts have said, and predicted that coronavirus will be reduced to an endemic in the future. The Centre, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and his cabinet colleague Satyendar Jain had said last year that one will have to learn with coronavirus and make its prevention norms a part of our lives. Dr Suresh Kumar, medical director of Delhi government-run LNJP Hospital said there will always be a few cases of the virus. “Zero is an unlikely figure. The virus is mutating and it is difficult to predict it’s future behaviour,” he said. Explaining why the virus has posed such a challenge, Dr Sanjeev K. Singh, Resident Medical Director, Amrita Hospitals in Faridabad said it is an mRNA virus

which keeps changing its structure. “These virus is smart and just for the sake of living, it will keep mutating. Covid will be there and may not be affecting all 193 countries but it will be there. “Coming down to zero won’t be achievable. In hospitals for getting surgeries, one has to get tested for Hepatitis and HIV. Eventually, you will be tested for Covid too,” he said. n July 4, the world’s greatest super power, both in terms of economy and military- the United States of America-celebrates its 245th independence day on July 4, which is popularly known as the Fourth of July. The day also commemorates the adoption of the Declaration of Independence from Great Britain. It was on July 4, 1776 that the second Continental Congress in the US adopted the Declaration of Independence, declaring that the 13 American colonies were no longer part of the British Empire. In practice, if July 4 is a Saturday (general holiday), it is observed on Friday, July 3. Again, if July 4 is a Sunday, it is observed on Monday, July 5. The core value of the Declaration f Independence states : “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.” However, if there is anything that contradicts American commitment to international human rights and democracy, it is on how it deals with the same issue at home. The original inhabitants of America- known as ‘Red Indians’ have been disposed of their ancestral lands and pushed to the margins of society. According to a report by the US Civil Rights Commission, native Americans still suffer higher rates of poverty, poor educational achievement, substandard housing, and higher rates of disease and illness. Native Americans continue to rank at or near the bottom of nearly every social, health, and economic indicator. Native Americans living on tribal lands do not have access to the same services and programs available to other Americans, even though the government has a binding trust obligation to provide them. The Declaration of Independence as it may, unfortunately does not include the native Americans who have been corralled inside reservations. The USA continues to be a champion of democracy and has been a beacon of light for the entire globe in this regard. America has fought wars in defence of democratic rights of other people even if these were on far away lands. The US prides itself with being the home of the brave. It is not a tall claim; the USA helped defeat the might of the Nazi Germany, colonial Japan and Fascist Italy during the Second World War. It also acted as bulwark against Stalinist hegemony and Moaist expansionism. The US continues to defend South Korea, Taiwan and Philippines. There is no country like the US which has sacrificed the lives of thousands of its soldiers to fight and die for the defence of countries under attack In the post-Vietnam war era, the USA has to contend with fighting against a new kind of war on a large scale without limitations and without boundaries. The war against terror continues, after the sleeping giant was rudely shaken from its sleep on September 11, 2000. Today, China has taken a quantum leap over all other developed nations in technology and economy. Soon China will surpass America economically and even militarily. China is the greatest threat to the free world and America could face one of its biggest challenges in the years to come.

Because I am a man of unclean lips… —Isaiah 6:5 When I come into the very presence of God, I do not realize that I am a sinner in an indefinite sense, but I suddenly realize and the focus of my attention is directed toward the concentration of sin in a particular area of my life. A person will easily say, “Oh yes, I know I am a sinner,” but when he comes into the presence of God he cannot get away with such a broad and indefinite statement. Our conviction is focused on our specific sin, and we realize, as Isaiah did, what we really are. This is always the sign that a person is in the presence of God. There is never any vague sense of sin, but a focusing on the concentration of sin in some specific, personal area of life. God begins by convicting us of the very thing to which His Spirit has directed our mind’s attention. If we will surrender, submitting to His conviction of that particular sin, He will lead us down to where He can reveal the vast underlying nature of sin. That is the way God always deals with us when we are consciously aware of His presence. This experience of our attention being directed to our concentration of personal sin is true in everyone’s life, from the greatest of saints to the worst of sinners. When a person first begins climbing the ladder of experience, he might say, “I don’t know where I’ve gone wrong,” but the Spirit of God will point out some definite and specific thing to him. The effect of Isaiah’s vision of the holiness of the Lord was the directing of his attention to the fact that he was “a man of unclean lips.” “He touched my mouth with it, and said: ‘Behold, this has touched your lips; your iniquity is taken away, and your sin purged’ ” (Isaiah 6:7). The cleansing fire had to be applied where the sin had been concentrated.

I

t seems we are all broken and wounded. As we pass through psychic bewilderment, existential uncertainty and fear of death, a question confronts us: How do we live? Is there nothing more in living than following a set of Covidappropriate guidelines — wearing masks, using sanitisers, avoiding large gatherings and getting ourselves vaccinated as early as we can? Moreover, our basic survival issues as well as immense financial and economic anxiety continue to haunt us. Yet, despite these practical constraints, there are moments when we begin to reflect on the very purpose of living as each of us has seen our loved ones dying, our “taken-for-granted” world crumbling, and even our privileges — medical insurances and social capital — proving to be illusory amid chaotic hospitals and unmanageable crematoriums. Yes, we will take the vaccines; and possibly, economists and policymakers will assure us and promise a “better” future with enhanced growth rates and GDP. But, the psychic /

existential/spiritual questions that the pandemic has posed will continue to bother us. Doctors, pharmaceutical companies, or even psychiatric drugs cannot provide a meaningful answer to these questions; nor can celebrity babas give us instant capsules of redemption. Possibly, the pandemic is conveying a message. We ought to redefine ourselves as seekers and wanderers — not narcissistic conquerors. The tremendous vital energy that modernity generates tends to make us think that we are the masters of the world. With science, we can know, predict and control. With technology, we can shape the world the way we want. And with the remarkable growth in medical sciences and diagnostic technologies, we can postpone death. Well, who can negate the success stories of modernity? Yet, amid this glitz of modernity, we tend to forget the reality of impermanence, or the inherent uncertainty of existence. A beauty queen, despite the miracle of plastic surgery and anti-ageing devices, will become a

skeleton; a sudden cardiac attack might deprive the most “efficient” corporate executive of his “productivity”; and not everything can be predicted, the way the meteorology department predicts whether this afternoon there will be rains in south Delhi. Yet, quite often, because of our modernist indulgence with “certainty”, “productivity”, ceaseless “growth” and limitless consumption, we forget that nothing is permanent, and the next moment cannot be predicted. It is sad that we needed a pandemic of this kind to make us see the reality of impermanence and uncertainty so vividly. Think of it. Can we see beyond the illusory optimism of modernity and life-negating despair that is affecting many of us at this moment? Possibly, as we acknowledge the reality of impermanence and uncertainty, we begin to value the worth of mindfulness — the nuanced art of living at this very moment. Yes, our “tomorrow” is beyond prediction; neither a doctor nor an astrologer can predict whether we will be lucky to see yet another

sunrise tomorrow. However, we can live — and live deeply, intensely and mindfully — at this very moment. Why do we negate the aliveness of this moment in the name of controlling or fearing the “future”? When we are really alive and experience this very moment, a sense of gratitude envelops us. Life acquires a meaning. Only then is it possible to echo with Tagore, and sing: “I have seen, have heard, have lived/ In the depth of the known have felt/The truth that exceeds all knowledge/ Which fills my heart with wonder and I sing.” Possibly, this is also the time to reflect on the illusory character of our inflated egos. See the way we live. We erect huge walls of separation. While urban centres normalise anonymity, and workplaces transform us into strangers or competitors, we tend to think that money can buy everything, or we begin to see ourselves in the statistics of Facebook/Instagram/Twitter followers and subscribers. Or, for that matter, when the technologies of surveillance have taught

us to suspect everybody, where is the possibility of a life-affirming human relationship, or a living community with a soul? Furthermore, even today we have not succeeded in becoming free from the practice of ghettoisation and untouchability. Yes, it is the irony of our times that we needed a pandemic to make us see the hollowness of this egotistic pride. Is there anybody who has not felt the acute pain of being lonely — the fear of being stigmatised and insulated as the virus becomes irresistible, the fear of a lonely death at the ICU of a hospital, or the fear of one’s dead body being thrown into the “sacred” river? Each of us has felt the need to be loved, touched and listened to; each of us has realised that money cannot buy everything; and each of us has felt that nothing matters more in life than the ecstasy of love. Love conquers fear; love makes death meaningful; love is more powerful than the vaccine. Possibly, the pandemic is compelling us to ask this pertinent question: Can we prioritise love over the power of money? Can we

attach more importance to the spontaneity of human relationships rather than the hyper-reality of media simulations? The pandemic is catastrophic. For the survivors, the world will no longer be the same. Yet, all attempts will be made — particularly, by the brigade of techno-capitalists and narcissistic political bosses — to convince the new generation that life must go on as usual with the same greed, violence and loneliness. However, if you and I are willing to be introspective, contemplative and reflective, we are bound to realise that we must alter the rhythm of life, and learn to live with humility, gratitude and love. Only then is it possible to realise the depths in Thich Nhat Hanh’s prophetic vision: “When we identify with the life of all that exists, we realise that birth and death are minor fluctuations in an ever-changing cosmos.” Avijit Pathak Professor of Sociology at JNU. The other side of the Pandemic story India should stand with developing countries

I

n a period of just over a year, this pandemic has drastically transformed the lives of masses of people around the globe, including teachers and students. This period has been one of change, adaptation, adoption, and evolvement in the field of education. As teachers, the transition into the digital world has come in as a big surprise because of this pandemic. Like every other profession in the world, teaching profession has changed dramatically over the past couple of months. The pandemic which started as a global health emergency is now a social, economic and educational catastrophe. The outbreak of COVID-19 has led to a situation of uncertainty and chaos among all the sectors. Education has been at the frontline of COVID-19, being equally affected as the other sectors. One such example is that of the teachers who have been forced to shift their mode of teaching from offline to online overnight. With schools shut across the state, both teachers and students have had to adapt to new types of learning. As a result, education has changed drastically with the distinctive rise of e-learning, whereby teaching-learning is carried out through digital platforms. As teachers, we’ve not been trained to go the digital way. When the world has slowed down, stress has begun to ramp up for teachers. Teaching inside and outside the classroom are two very different experiences. Honestly, we are also battling not just the virus but also this ‘new normal.’ We are not online teachers. Teaching during this pandemic is so far from typical. It’s practically and realistically nothing schools have ever done before. This isn’t what we’ve signed up for and yet, we’re doing it for the love of the ‘noble profession.’ Dear people of the land, kindly acknowledge the fact that we’re kept busy daily from 9:00 am till 3:00 pm sending notes, assignments, projects, conducting test after test, correcting copies. Just because

we’re not attending school physically does not mean we’ve stopped working altogether. We’re doing everything virtually at home to avert academic losses and also to make teachinglearning engaging and effective for our students. We are still working fulltime balancing professional and personal life. Regular classes are happening online everyday. Please understand that teaching in this atmosphere has proven to be extremely challenging. Teaching is ten times easier in a classroom. Teachers are now shouldering a difficult task: to replicate the functions of school for months without an actual school. We are adapting and improvising everyday to keep our students learning. Today, we are happy to say that the biggest victory for the teachers during the pandemic has been breaking the geographical barriers and overcoming infrastructural and technological challenges to ensure that our students’ learning is not hampered. In just a matter of months, this pandemic has given our professional lives an almighty shake-up. We’ve changed our instructional model of ‘teaching as telling, learning as listening’ all because we don’t want our students to be at a loss. Going online is the safest for the students but definitely not the easiest for the teachers. I believe teachers are the closest witnesses of the challenges the pandemic has brought for the students, parents and ourselves. And there is no denying this simple fact. Yes, we understand the plight of the parents and other groups demanding fee waiver, asking the schools to come up with steps to do this and that for the parents and students because we are also normal human beings. We also understand that several schools and parents are facing financial crisis because of the pandemic and lockdown enforced by the government. But who will understand our situation? Who will speak for the struggling teachers? Is there a relief package for the teachers too? The sad truth is no. As private

unaided teachers, we are also fighting to survive, struggling to bring food to the table. We have bills to pay, families to take care of. What we are doing is how we are living. We are completely dependent on teaching for survival. But no matter what, we have taken every challenge and difficulty as part of teaching and learning. We have pledged to give our best for our students. We hope people take time to realize and appreciate the simple fact that teachers are doing more than ever. Come 5th September, we are appreciated, we are reminded of how important we are in the society. We are called nation builders. We are called the ones shaping the future of tomorrow. We are told that teaching is one job that makes all other professions possible. For that matter, kind and grateful words will flow in that very day and without being said, this trend will continue every year. At this point of time, we don’t want that. We only wish to be understood. People say, ‘Teachers aren’t working like before.’ Truth be told, we are actually working harder than ever. We are doing what we’ve always done, and more. A lot has happened in just a matter of few months, yet we are grateful to be called teachers, and happier that we still get to impart knowledge to our students each day, even if it’s not in person. The uncertainty around when schools will reopen makes our job even more important. We have learned and relearned to adapt and adopt both the art and science of teaching. In fact, many have opined that we are improving as teachers. In this crisis, teachers have shown that learning never stops. We are prepared to face the challenges as the pandemic continues and even in its aftermath. So, no matter what people say, do or think, our mission as teachers will always remain the same- to impart knowledge to our students. P.S. This is the other side of the pandemic story. A

t the recent G7 outreach summit, Prime Minister Narendra Modi pitched for “One Earth, One Health”. This is ironic since he was noncommittal for the longest time in ensuring evenly priced Covid-19 vaccines for the people of his country. But what explains his desperate attempt to portray India as close to the richer countries and claim a visible bonhomie with right-wing leaders of the Western hemisphere? This question is important since the prime minister has been conspicuous by his absence at Non-Aligned Movement summits. He attended only a virtual meeting of the NAM Contact Group, in 2020, after his government was criticised for human rights violations, failure to protect minorities, abolition of Article 370, use of sedition laws, and so on. The answer to this question is twofold. One stems from the demagoguery of the prime minister resulting in his followers propelling his unsustainable larger-than-life image. The second and the more pivotal reason is located in the global structural crisis of capitalism. The crisis is inherent in the nature of capitalism. Since the 1970s, monopoly capital has only produced nominal returns in the advanced economies and this has been the central concern of the rich and their enabling ecosystems such as the IMF. In search of higher returns, investment of capital in the developing world has increased. As a consequence, privatisation and exploitation have picked up pace and lives and livelihoods have become even more insecure. The crisis is manifest in unemployment, poor wages and working conditions, lack of social security, etc. The anxiety among the working classes is being used to lure them to divisive rhetoric deployed by demagogues such as Modi and Brazil’s Jair Bolsonaro. Ideological reliance on the “free” market was a part and parcel of the neoliberal doctrine. Lofty claims of globally integrated free-markets from which prosperity would trickle down could hardly conceal the increase in economic inequality in the last five decades, now quantified by economist Thomas Piketty. Alarming levels of wealth concentration at the top and increasing destitution at the bottom are the hallmarks of

neoliberalism. The problem is particularly grave in developing countries which have become isles of relatively higher returns to monopoly capital in an otherwise uncertain free market. The Indian state under Modi has been more than happy to facilitate capitalists as they accrue super-profits. The bandwagoning of the interests of the Indian people behind Western economies has not only increased economic hardship but also curtailed democracy. Access to public health, education, housing and employment have become elusive as the push for privatisation of PSUs, sale of national assets, weakening of financial cushions like the RBI and LIC continues. Whatever we see around us — disease and death, inflation, poverty, unemployment — follows a single logic, which is the protection of capitalist interests. The inclination of Indian polity towards advanced capitalist economies is evidently detrimental to the rights and interests of the Indian working class and farmers. The subjugation of Indian interests to the US in matters of external affairs is increasingly pushing India towards becoming an instrument and guarantor of American interests in the region, straining our relations with neighbours like China and time-tested allies like Russia. The recent meeting of the G7 agreed on a plan to “Build Back Better World” (B3W) to curtail Chinese influence and its Belt and Road Initiative (BRI). Even from a realist prism, the G7 and G20 are not representative of the dynamic development of the global economy in the recent decades. The closing of the economic gap between China and the US has made the Western world uneasy as it is the first serious challenge to Western dominance after the disintegration of the USSR. Provocations and trade wars are taking the globe closer to a new Cold War. In this backdrop, India should adopt an independent foreign policy and champion the concerns of the global south instead of succumbing to the agenda of US and other Western powers. D. Fuel prices should be revised

The fuel prices in Nagaland have been increasing very often these days. Just like how the price rise in kitchen oil have been trending throughout social media, news of fuel price hikes are slowly seeping into the internet meme zones too. The government should seriously think about revising the VAT again and should also take up meticulous steps to further prevent anymore unplanned price rise. Besides the hike in fuel rates, the concerned bodies in charge of bringing order amongst all auto rickshaws plying through the road of Dimapur should also see to it that the drivers do not demand fares exceeding the rates set by the higher authorities. Some of these drivers point blankly charge their passengers outrageously. These acts should not be encouraged and stringent action should also be taken against the defaulters. AGRA, JUL 3 (AGENCIES): “Khela Hobe” – Didi’s popular slogan that caught the fancy of the Bengal voters during the recent assembly elections, has been swiftly adopted by the Samajwadi Party workers in Uttar Pradesh, who have painted its Bhojpuri version - “Khela Hoi” - on the walls of several cities across the state, reports Times of India. After the slogans appeared initially in Varanasi and Kanpur, it is now painted on walls of several other cities, including Aligarh. Even hoardings of “Khela Hoi” have been put up. Party’s state spokesperson Juhi Singh said that though this is not an official slogan of the party yet, party workers are using it widely as they seem to like it. “Our party will play the game with a strategy,” she said, adding that this phrase came from Bengal

Heist case: Kerala BJP chief says ready to face probe

Kozhikode, Jul 3 (PTI): Kerala BJP chief K Surendran on Saturday said he was not afraid to appear before any probe team but said he was yet to decide whether or not to appear before the special investigation team probing into the Kodakara highway heist case. Twitter to appoint grievance officer New Delhi, Jul 3 (PTI): Twitter has told the Delhi High Court that it is in the “final stages” of appointing an interim chief compliance officer and an interim resident grievance officer under the new Information Technology (IT) Rules. In the meantime, grievances raised by Indian users are being looked into by a grievance officer, it said in an affidavit submitted in response to a plea by lawyer Amit Acharya, in which he claimed noncompliance of the Centre’s new IT Rules by the platform. The micro-blogging site has also said it may fall within the definition of a “significant social media intermediary” under the Information Technology (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Ethics Code) Rules, 2021. The rules seek to regulate dissemination and publication of content in cyber space, including social media platforms, and were notified in February by the central government. Twitter said in “substantial compliance” with Rule 3(2) and Rule 4(1)(c) of the new IT Rules, it did appoint an interim resident grievance officer.

N e w D e l hi , J u l 3 (PTI): In an apparent dig at the Centre over the rising fuel prices, some Opposition leaders on Saturday shared video footage from 1973 in which then Jan Sangh leader Atal Bihari Vajpayee is seen arriving in Parliament on a bullock cart to “protest an increase of 7 paise in petrol prices”. Petrol price on Friday crossed the Rs 100-per-litremark in Chennai as well as in some places in Punjab and Kerala after fuel prices were hiked yet again. Petrol is priced at over Rs 99 a litre in Delhi and Kolkata -- the only metro cities which haven’t seen the Rs 100 mark yet. Petrol price was hiked by 35 paise per litre on Friday but there was no change in diesel rates, according to a price notification of stateowned fuel retailers. Fuel prices differ from state to state depending on the incidence of local taxes such as value-added tax (VAT) and freight charges. For this reason, petrol has crossed the Rs 100-alitre mark in some places in Punjab and all over Kerala. Jalandhar in Punjab has the fuel priced at Rs 100.22 a litre while it costs Rs 101.14 in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala.

Stan Swamy challenges stringent UAPA provision on bail Mumbai, Jul 3 (PTI): Tribal rights activist Stan Swamy, an accused in the Elgar Parishad-Maoists links case, has challenged in the Bombay High Court a provision of the stringent Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA) dealing with grant of bail, contending it has created an “insurmountable hurdle” for those seeking relief. Swamy said section 43D(5) of the UAPA was violative of the accused person’s fundamental right to life and liberty as guaranteed by the Constitution even as the high court on Saturday extended the stay of the 84-year-old Jesuit priest at a private hospital in Mumbai till July 6. Senior counsel Mihir Desai told a bench of Justices SS Shinde and NJ Jamadar that Swamy was still undergoing treatment at the intensive care unit of the Holy Family Hospital, where he was shifted from the Taloja prison in Navi Mumbai following the HC’s

order on May 28 this year. Swamy filed his fresh plea in the high court challenging section 43D(5) of the UAPA on Friday. In his plea filed through advocate Desai, Swamy said the above section created an “insurmountable hurdle” for the accused to get bail and, thus, was violative of the accused person’s fundamental right to life and liberty as guaranteed by the Constitution. The common practice under the criminal justice system is to presume an accused person’s innocence unless charges against him or her are proven by the prosecution. Section 43D (5) of the UAPA, however, mandates that if a court has reasonable grounds to believe that the accusation against someone charges under the Act is prima facie true, then the accused shall not be released on bail. Swamy’s plea stated that presumption of innocence is a fundamental tenet of criminal jurisprudence

New Delhi, Jul 3 (PTI): Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday described as “landmark” the decision to include retail and wholesale trade as MSMEs, which will allow traders the benefits of priority sector lending, and said his government is committed to empowering the community. Union Minister Nitin Gadkari had on Friday announced the inclusion of retail and wholesale trade under MSMEs (micro, small and medium enterprises) as per which the traders will now get the benefit of priority sector lending under RBI guidelines.

In a tweet, the prime minister said, “Our government has taken a landmark step of including retail and wholesale trade as MSME. This will help crores of our traders get easier finance, various other benefits and also help boost their business. We are committed to empowering our traders.” Official sources said the move will have an immediate impact on smaller retailers and wholesalers with businesses up to Rs 250 crore of turnover in availing immediate-term finance as part of various schemes announced under “Atmanirbhar Bharat” programme. This landmark decision will have a structural impact for the sector, helping it get formalised by giving better finance options for businesses that want to get structured, they said, adding it will give retail MSMEs the support they need to “survive, revive and thrive”.

New Delhi, Jul 3 (IANS): Credit outlook for tractor industry remains ‘Stable’ supported by low leverage along with healthy liquidity, rating agency ICRA said. However, it pointed out that commodity pressures are likely to moderate margins in FY22 from previous year levels. “The credit outlook on tractor industry remains ‘Stable’. Despite expectations of some margin pressure, the operating margins for most OEMs in the industry are expected to remain at healthy levels, with return indicators being robust. OEMs continue to focus on developing new application oriented products and are working on emission norm related product launches,” said Rohan Kanwar Gupta, Vice President, ICRA. “In line with ICRA’s stable outlook on the industry, the credit profiles of OEMs are expected to remain healthy, supported by limited debt, healthy cash and liquid investments and limited investment plans.” Besides, the rating agency expects a 1-4 per cent YoY growth in domestic tractor volumes in FY22. Earlier, ICRA had made a forecast of 4-6 per cent growth in volumes for FY22; in view of the impact of the second wave, the same has been revised downwards to 1-4 per cent. “Even as uncertainty with regard to the evolution of the pandemic exists, the underlying demand drivers for the industry remain intact. Expectations of healthy rabi cash flows, continuation of various Government support programmes, healthy financing availability and a normal monsoon forecast, are likely to aid farm sentiments,” the agency said. “In addition to strong agri demand, haulage demand has improved significantly over the past few months, led by continued push of the government on developing rural infrastructure; the same is likely to support industry volumes,” it added.

Bring petrol under GST regime, FKCCI appeals to FM Bengaluru, Jul 3 (IANS): The members of the Federation of Karnataka Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FKCCI), led by its president Perikal M. Sundar, on Friday appealed to Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman to bring petrol and diesel under the Goods and Services Tax (GST) regime besides reducing the GST on commodities required for daily needs to contain inflation. The FKCCI in its memorandum also urged the Finance Minister to waive off of the processing fees to sanction fresh loans, besides enhancing the existing loans granted to the Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME) sector. Build ‘Great Wall of Immunity’: China to nations BEIJING/ Brussels, Jul 3 (Reuters/ IANS): China’s Foreign Minister Wang Yi urged the international community on Saturday to build a “Great Wall of Immunity” to battle the COVID-19 pandemic. “We should face the imminent challenges together,” Wang, who is also a member of the State Council, or cabinet, told the 9th World Peace Forum held at Tsinghua University in the Chinese capital. “The most urgent priority is to expedite the construction of the ‘Great Wall of Immunity’ to fend off the virus, surpass political discrimination and carry out international anti-pandemic cooperation.” China, where the coronavirus first surfaced in the central city of Wuhan in late 2019, has supplied more than 480 million vaccine doses to other nations. An EU-wide Digital Covid Certificate officially entered into force on Thursday, allowing people to travel within the EU-plus area without restrictions if they can either prove to

have been fully vaccinated with the EMA-approved vaccines, or have tested negative or recovered from the infection. Meanwhile, EU member states have the right to accept travelers vaccinated with jabs approved by the World Health Organization (WHO), among which is the Covishield. Media reports said only a small number of the 27 member states have announced the acceptance. In response to concerns that people from the UK may be denied entry when traveling to the EU, Keersmaecker said the European Commission is working to solve the problem. “In order to assure a coordinated approach here, the Commission is obviously in contact in discussion with the member states to go through these different vaccines and to see which is the best coordinated approach,” said the spokesman.

Tokyo, Jul 3 (IANS): Two bodies were found and about 20 people remained missing after a massive mudslide triggered by torrential rain hit Atami city of Shizuoka prefecture in central Japan on Saturday, local authorities said. The disaster occurred at about 10:30 a.m. local time in Atami city of Shizuoka prefecture on Saturday, as heavy rainfall swept areas along the Pacific coast in central and

eastern Japan, the Xinhua news agency reported. Firefighters are conducting a search and rescue operation in the slide-stricken area for the victims. The Shizuoka prefectural government called for help from the Self-Defense Forces in disaster relief. Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga held talks with disaster minister Yasufumi Tanahashi over the mudslide and other calamities associated with

the rain. The Japan Meteorological Agency urged maximum alert and called on people to be vigilant over mudslides, flooding and swollen rivers. Torrential rain also disrupted the public transport system. The Shinkansen bullet train were temporarily halted in sections between Tokyo and Shin-Osaka, according to operator Central Japan Railway Co.

London, Jul 3 (Agencies): Recent fighting in the Tigray region of Ethiopia has resulted in a famine that is now affecting more than 400,000 people, UN officials say. In its first public meeting on the crisis, members of the UN Security Council warned that as many as 33,000 children were severely malnourished. Officials said that a further 1.8m people were on the brink of famine as a result of the eight-month conflict. They also warned of further clashes despite the declaration of a ceasefire. The Ethiopian government, which has been

fighting regional forces in Tigray, declared a unilateral ceasefire on Monday. However, rebels vowed to drive their “enemies” from the region and there have been reports of sporadic clashes as pressure builds internationally for all sides in the conflict to pull back. The fighting between the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) and government forces has already left thousands of people dead and more than two million people have been displaced. All sides in the conflict have been accused of carrying out mass killings and human rights violations.

On Friday, several thousand captured Ethiopian soldiers were paraded through the streets of the Tigrayan regional capital Mekelle. On Friday, the UN’s acting humanitarian aid chief told members of the Security Council at a meeting in New York that the situation in Tigray had deteriorated dramatically in recent weeks. The region was experiencing “the worst famine situation we have seen in decades”, Ramesh Rajasingham said. “Close to 5.2 million people still require humanitarian assistance - the great majority of them women and children,” he added.

Washington, Jul 3 (IANS): The death toll from the partial collapse of a condo in Florida has risen to 22 as the Miami-Dade Police Department on Friday released the identities of three additional victims but withheld that of the fourth. The department said on Twitter that the newly discovered victims included a seven-year-old daughter of one of the first responders, and 126 people remained unaccounted for, the Xinhua news agency reported. Chances for finding someone still alive beneath the pile have become increasingly slim as the search and rescue operations stretched into a ninth day.

Meanwhile, Hurricane Elsa, which has strengthened into a Category 1 hurricane and is now battering islands in the Caribbean, is expected to reach Florida’s shores as early as Sunday evening, forecasters said. Though Elsa’s path remains highly uncertain, the hurricane could still possibly bring strong winds and heavy rain to most of Florida, further complicating the rescue effort at the site of the condo collapse. Huntress Labs said the hack targeted Florida-based IT company Kaseya before spreading through corporate networks that use its software. Previously, FINA had banned the use of soul caps for the Tokyo Olympics because they did not “fit the natural form of the head”. The caps, made by UK-based company Soul Cap, cater to swimmers who have long, curly, thick and voluminous hair. The company came into prominence when Britain’s Alice Dearing became the first black swimmer to gain qualification for the Olympics open water event. “FINA acknowledges the comments and reactions concerning the use of ‘Soul Cap’ swim caps in FINA competition,” the governing body said in a statement on Saturday, without a specific mention to Olympics. “FINA is committed to ensuring that all aquatics athletes have access to appropriate swimwear

for competition where this swimwear does not confer a competitive advantage. FINA is currently reviewing the situation with regards to ‘Soul Cap’ and similar products, understanding the importance of inclusivity and representation,” the statement added. AIBA rejigs weight categories for men and women New Delhi, Jul 3 (PTI): The International Boxing Association (AIBA) has decided to add three weight categories for men and two for women in its competitions from August this year, saying that it will allow a greater pool of boxers to fight in divisions they feel “most strong and comfortable” in. From the current 10, the men’s weight categories have now gone up to 13 with the minimum weight reduced to 48kg from the current 49kg.The featherweight (57kg) has been added back to the fold along with the addition of light middleweight (71kg) and the cr uiserweight (86kg). The bantamweight has been brought back to 54kg from current 56kg. The women’s divisions have gone up from 10 to 12 with the addition of light flyweight at 50kg and light middleweight at 70kg. The decision was taken after “widespread consultation of stakeholders”, including the Competition Committee, the Women’s Committee, and the national federations. “…the AIBA Board of Directors has voted in favour of amending the weight classes for youth and elite boxers at all AIBA competitions,” the world body said in a letter to the

national federations which is in PTI’s possession. “The Men’s weight categories will increase from ten (10) to thirteen (13), whilst the women’s categories will move from 10 to 12. World’s third largest cricket Hamilton extends Mercedes stadium to come up in Jaipur contract by two years

Jaipur, Jul (IANS): The stage is all set for the construction of world’s third largest cricket stadium in the Pink City as the Jaipur Development Authority has allotted land to Rajasthan Cricket Association. RCA commissioner Gaurav Goyal gave the papers of allotted land to RCA president Vaibhav Gehlot for the stadium to be constructed at Delhi Road in Chonp village. The new stadium will have the capacity to accommodate 75,000 people and shall be constructed in two phases. Under the first phase, it shall be con-

structed with a capacity of 45,000 people while in the second phase, its capacity will be expanded to 30,000 people, said Gehlot. Speaking to the media, he said, “The stadium to be constructed on around 100 acres of land and will be completed in 2.5 - 3 years with an investment of around Rs 650 crore. The BCCI has given a grant of Rs 100 crore while loan worth Rs 100 crore will be collected. Rs 90 crore will be collected by the RCA and others. Under the first phase, investment of Rs 400 crore will be made. RCA will

take a loan of Rs 100 crore, Rs 90 core will be generated via corporate box.” The new stadium will have two practice grounds, academy, club house hotel and all other state of the art facilities available in all international stadiums. RCA is also focussing on improving the stadium standards in Jodhpur as CM Ashok Gehlot has announced to organise IPL in this city, he added. Ranji Trophy to return, men’s domestic season from Oct 20 New Delhi, Jul 3 (IANS): The Indian men’s domestic cricket season, also including Ranji Trophy which was cancelled last season due to Covid19 pandemic, will commence on October 20 and run till March 26, 2022. The multi-day Ranji Trophy will be played in a three-month window from November 16, 2021 to February 19, 2022, the Indian cricket board announced on Saturday. “The Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy will kick-start on October 20, 2021 with the final to be played on November 12, 2021,” said a statement from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). The Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, which is the national T20 tournament, will begin five days after the remainder of Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021 tournament is completed on October 15. “The coveted Ranji

Trophy, which was cancelled last season due to the Covid-19 pandemic, will be played in a threemonth window from November 16, 2021 to February 19, 2022,” the statement added. “The Vijay Hazare Trophy will take place from February 23, 2022 to March 26, 2022,” it added. A total of 2,127 domestic games will be played this season across various age groups in the men’s & women’s categories.
