PM rolls out door-to-door vax drive
NEW DELHI, NOV 3 (PTI): Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday said the COVID-19 vaccination drive needs to be taken door-to-door now and stressed the importance of complet-ing the inoculation by taking the second dose. Cautioning against any laxity after surpassing the milestone of 1 billion vaccine doses, Modi said “a new crisis can come” and quoted a saying to assert that one should not underestimate “diseases and enemies as they should be fought till the very end”. He called for equal attention to taking the second dose of the Covid vaccine, noting that when-ever the cases of infection start decreasing, the feeling of urgency among people decreases. Modi made the remarks as he interacted with district magistrates of over 40 districts spread across Jharkhand, Manipur, Nagaland, Arunachal Pradesh, Maharashtra, Meghalaya, and other states with districts having low vaccination coverage. Talking about the issue of rumours and misunderstandings about Covid vac-

cination, he said awareness is the only solution for this and asked the state officials to take help from religious leaders in this regard. Speaking to the officials, he urged them to change gears from making arrangements earlier for taking people to the vaccination centres and getting them safely vaccinated to now administering vaccines door-to-door. Modi urged the health workers to reach every house with the passion of ‘har ghar tika, ghar-ghar tika’ (vaccine at every doorstep). He also urged the officials to work with the spirit of ‘har ghar dastak’ (knocking on every door) to ensure full vaccination of both doses. Modi cautioned that
while reaching out to every house, equal attention needs to be paid to the second dose along with the first dose of the vaccine. He said Diwali is being celebrated after the important milestone of administering 1 billion doses and people should move forward with the resolve that they would celebrate Christmas after achieving new goals. Immediately after returning from his visit to Italy and Glasgow to attend the G20 and COP 26 meetings, the prime minister held the review meeting which included officials of districts with less than 50 per cent coverage of the first dose and low coverage of the second dose of Covid vaccine. During the meeting, the district magistrates gave

Centre cuts excise duty on petrol by Rs.5, diesel by Rs.10
WASHINGTON, NOV 3 (AGENCIES): The Israeli company behind the controversial Pegasus spyware has been added to a US trade blacklist. Pegasus has reportedly been used by nation states to target the phones of rights activists and journalists. The US has now put its maker, NSO Group, on its “entity list”, banning business dealings with them. NSO Group said it was “dismayed” by the decision, adding that its technology helped maintain US national security by “preventing terrorism and crime”. It has long maintained that its software is sold only to military, law enforcement and intelligence agencies from countries with good human rights records. But earlier this year, it was accused of having sold its technology to authoritarian governments, which then targeted innocent people.

ing Handbook for Cities describes how cities are warming quickly due to the “heat island effect”, caused by a combination of diminished green cover, the thermal properties of the materials commonly used in urban surfaces, and waste heat from human activities. The Handbook notes that: Demand for space cooling is increasing. The energy requirement for space cooling is predicted to triple from 2016 to 2050 as millions of households in developing countries acquire air conditioners in the coming decades. Impacts of urban heat are not evenly distributed. Cooler cities, homes and
streets are key to ensure climate justice. Lower-income districts and communities are usually the most vulnerable to heat, placing the negative impacts of excess warming disproportionately on those least likely to be able to afford or access thermal comfort. We need to transition to more equitable and sustainable ways of cooling our cities and make them liveable for all. The benefits of sustainable urban cooling are far reaching, including improved health and productivity, reduced power energy requirements, lower emissions, and economic benefits. (Cont’d on p-8)

WHO approves Covaxin for emergency use NEW DELHI, NOV 3 (PTI): Technical Advisory Group (TAG), an independent advisory committee of the World Health Organisation (WHO), has recommended Emergency Use Listing (EUL) status for Bharat Biotech COVID-19 vaccine Covaxin, sources in the know of the development said. The WHO is in the process of evaluating Covaxin’s clinical trial data for use of EUL. The TAG on October 26 had sought “additional clarifications” from the company for Covaxin to conduct a final “risk-benefit assessment” for Emergency Use Listing of the vaccine. “The Technical Advisory Group of WHO has

being also stabilised through buffer stock. ...Efforts of the Centre to ease onion prices is now bearing results,” the consumer affairs ministry said in a statement. Onion prices are now cheaper than last year as the average all India retail price of the key kitchen staple is ruling at Rs 40.13 per kg, while in wholesale market it is at Rs 31.15 per kg, it said. A total of 1,11,376.17 tonnes of onion from the buffer stock was in major markets till November 2, it added. As per the ministry data, the intervention has helped cool down retail prices by Rs 5-12 per kg so far.
In order to cool down prices, the government has taken up calibrated and targeted release of onions from the buffer stock on first-infirst-out (FIFO) principle, guided by the twin objectives of moderating prices and ensuring minimal storage loss. Apart from releasing in the market, Centre has offered buffer onion at Rs 21 per kg to all states and union territories for lifting from the storage locations. This would enable states/UTs to take up by themselves market interventions either through direct supply to retail consumers via retail outlets or release in key markets to bring down prices.
