Sarma has threatened to file a criminal defamation suit after Sisodia alleged corruption in the procurement of Covid PPE kits. Sisodia in Delhi said that PPE kit contracts were awarded to a company linked to Sarma’s wife. “Himanta Biswa Sarma awarded the contract to his wife’s company. He paid Rs 990 for the PPE kits while others were purchased at Rs 600 apiece from another company on the same day. This is a huge crime,” Sisodia said and dared BJP leadership to take

KOHIMA, JUN 4 (NPN): Nagaland Assembly Secretariat Staff Association (NASSA) along with the Joint Action Committee (JAC) on Saturday resolved to intensify its agitation by launching a two-day ‘black badge’ protest starting Monday (June 6-7). The decision comes following a joint meeting of NASSA and JAC held here on Saturday. Even as the two-day ‘pen down strike’ concluded on Saturday, the association said they were yet to receive any positive response from the state government. The protest has been called against the state government’s decision of appointing Dr. PJ Antony (retired officer) as principal secretary, under the establishment of the NLA secretariat. Later, in a press note, NASSA general secretary Talirenla and JAC secretary Sezoto Theyo said that the meeting held on June 4 decided to continue with its democratic agitation from June 6-7. They said the pendown strike would now be intensified by wearing black badges. Meanwhile, NASSA vice president Rocus Rino informed Nagaland Post that the second day of the ‘pen down strike’ passed off peacefully with all members attending office, but ceasing to carry out any work in view of the agitation.

The allegations are “false, imaginary, malicious and can be attributed as the handiwork of a certain section with vested interests,” Hazarika, who is also the minister for water resources and information and public relations told reporters. “Why are the two organisations (who made the claims) not going to the Court if they have evidence instead of making false and baseless allegations?” he added. On June 1 two digital media organisations- ‘The Wire’ and Guwahati-based ‘The Crosscurrent’ in a joint investigative report claimed that Assam government had placed four Covid-19 related emergency medical supply orders most likely without following proper process.

DIMAPUR, JUN 4 (NPN): Advisor for Fisheries and Aquatic Resources, Economic & Statistic and Evaluation, L. Khumo Khiamniungan, inaugurated the first ever ice plant-cum-cold storage at Brooder Fish Farm, Half Nagarjan here on Saturday.

The project “ice plantcum-cold storage” was funded under negotiated loan from National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) during 2020-21 at a cost of Rs.146.85 lakh as NABARD share and the state share of 5%, which is still awaited, the department informed.

IMD predicts heavy rainfall over NE region NEW DELHI, JUN 4 (AGENCIES): With Southwest monsoon covering the entire North Eastern states and some parts of Sub Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted intense spell of rainfall over the region during the next five days. According to the report, normal or active monsoon conditions were expected to continue over Assam, Meghalaya, and Arunachal Pradesh during the next two to three days. Thereafter, rain activities may intensify over remaining parts of Northeast India. A Cyclonic circulation is over Northwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining areas and moderate commitments from Bay of Bengal after reading posture over Northeast India. East west trough is also extending from Eastern part of Uttar Pradesh to Nagaland, the report stated.

Speaking at the programme, Khumo, stated that the department had been facing numerous problems due to non-availability of the ice plant-cum-cold storage. However, with the inaugural of the facility, Khumo said the department would now be able to move forward and help fish farmers in acquiring livelihood. Acknowledging NABARD for funding the project, advisor said that the project would help the educated unemployed youth in gaining interest in fish farming and also change the mindset of Naga youth

to have self-sustainability. Further, Khumo urged the department to continue to work for the benefit of all. He said that the recently inaugurated facility would be a waste of money if it was not utilised for the purpose. Advisor also encouraged department staff to make their presence felt by working for the betterment and uplift of the department. Meanwhile, NABARD Nagaland regional office Dimapur general manager, Tiakala Ao, spoke on the importance development of fishery sector in the state. (Cont’d on p-8)

DIMAPUR, JUN 4 (NPN): Hitting out at the state government for the collapse in governance, Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee (NPCC) president K. Therie said that the state government has lost control for the past two decades where “extortion and corruption were firmly rooted from top to bottom”. “Words like percentage, commission, cut, our govt tax (not people’s Govt tax), have all been coined during two decades’ rule and these have become the law and practiced as conventional law,” Therie stated. While appreciating the removal of check gates within Nagaland, Therie also demanded the removal of inter-state check gates in view of GST and VAT. Therie said that though the chief secretary was expecting prices of commodities to fall, however, on the ground it was not so. Pointing out that the “internal gate extortions” were only transferred to wholesalers and retailers, Therie said more actions were required to bring down the price hike. The basis of price hike, he said was compounded with corruption and extortion by all the organs, agencies, registered societies, unions, associations, and insurgents. He said the Essential Commodities Act and Weights and Measures Act, that sustain prices, were no longer known to the people and that illegal extortion by societies and insurgents have become deeply rooted and has replaced the law in

Nagaland. As societies no longer practice defined welfare objectives to encourage, promote and preserve high standards amongst people, rather, Therie said hundreds of societies, unions and associations were taking law and order into their own hands by undertaking enforcement upon soft targets from amongst the traders. “There is complete freedom of abusing and intimidating business houses and retailers as we have seen in multiple viral video clips,” Therie stated. Maintaining that law and order has collapsed in Nagaland, Therie alleged that the executive machineries do not go by the book of law but by verbal dictates of ministers and MLAs. “Their advice to the public is to compromise for future safety,” he alleged. The NPCC president also said that coordinated efforts in enforcing law and customary laws were no more the practice, but instead confront each other. Asserting that customary law is a sovereign authority of the State of Nagaland, Therie said village councils and GBs were expected to deal with law and order effectively with customary laws and procedures. He said upholding law and order is a major responsibility of the VCC and GBs. However, instead of upholding the Constitution and the law of the land, Therie alleged that many support unlawful activities while administration remains a mute spectator. Though it is the responsibility of the admin-

India to have new military recruitment scheme ‘Agnipath’ Union Cabinet likely to approve in the coming week NEW DELHI, JUN 4 (ANI): Top military brass of the country including the three services chiefs on Saturday briefed Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the new ‘Agnipath’ recruitment scheme for induction of soldiers in the three defence services. The scheme is likely to be approved by Union Cabinet in the coming week

as the defence forces have already started making preparations for its rollout. Prime Minister Modi was briefed about the Agnipath recruitment scheme on Saturday by the top military brass including the chief of the three defence forces-- Army, Air Force and Navy-- and Department of Military Affairs Officials, government sources told ANI news agency. Agnipath recruitment scheme has been planned and prepared by the Department of Military Affairs presently led by Ad-

ditional Secretary Lt Gen Anil Puri. As per the initial plans, after the initial training of around six months, around 20-25 per cent of recruited youth known as ‘Agniveers’ would be given longer tenures while others would be released with a severance package which would be around Rs 10-12 lakh, they said. If the project moves as per plan, the recruitment process for the first batch of Agniveers may start in the next three to four months, the sources said. The forces will also have the option of recruit-

ing specialists for specific tasks who would perform the desired role. During the Covid-19 pandemic, the recruitment of soldiers in the armed forces has been halted. As per the plans, the soldiers relieved from the service would be provided assistance in getting placed in civilian jobs. A number of corporates have shown interest in availing services of such ‘Agniveers’ as they would be benefitted from hiring such trained military-trained disciplined manpower.

istration to enforce the law of the land upon failure of customary law, Therie, however, said they end up blaming each other and in between the public are left unprotected. Mentioning that the State Legislative Assembly’s failures were mighty, Therie said the State, for a long time, has failed to see new laws to deal with an evolving society and the growth of economy. On the other hand, he said civil societies and NGOs make a hue and cry in the local papers, but eventually land up “seeking party tickets from the very ones they criticize.” They shamelessly exhibit their cars earned through bribes. They proudly construct palatial buildings with bribe money”. “Instead of despising bribe takers, people praise and pray for them. This is the heights of hypocrisy of corruption,” Therie stated. On clean election campaign, Therie said the Church well understands the predicament. But do the demands of bribe rise from the political workers or should we call them dalal/brokers? Therie asked. He said that the voters now wanted to take directly from candidates and so demand house to house visits defying the Church. On judiciary Theire said it (judiciary) has earned a huge trust deficit. While criminals no longer fear to repeat crimes, he said they have become more dangerous to victims after being freed. (Cont’d on p-8)

Centre writes to States to phase out single-use plastic BE’s Covid-19 vaccine Corbevax gets DCGI nod as heterologous booster dose

Spl. Correspondent

NEW DELHI, JUN 4 (NPN): On the eve of the World Environment Day, the Centre on Saturday issued an advisory to states and union territories to phase out single-use plastic (SUP). On June 5, 2022, States/ UTs and Urban Local Bodies across the country will swing into campaign mode, in a bid to make the country free of SUP as well as contribute to improving the environment, under the overarching mandate of “Clean and Green”. This comes on the heels of Prime Minister Modi’s Mann Ki Baat ad-

dress to the nation on May 29, 2022, where he exhorted citizens to join together and make some efforts for cleanliness and tree plantation on the occasion of World Environment Day. Given the dual mandate of World Environment Day and India’s committed ban of SUP by June 30, 2022, the Ministry of Housing & Urban Affairs (MoHUA) has issued a detailed advisory to States and UTs to take up a range of activities to fulfil those mandates. These would include large scale cleaning and plogging drives, with special emphasis on plastic waste collection, as well as large

scale tree plantation drives, with participation of all citizens – students, voluntary organisations, self-help groups, local NGOs, CSOs, NSS and NCC cadets, RWAs, market associations, corporate entities, etc. While 2,591 urban local bodies (ULBs) out of 4,704 have already reported notification of SUP ban as per the directions of Central Pollution Control Board and the environment ministry, states and UTs will need to ensure that the remaining 2,100-plus ULBs notify the same by June 30, 2022. It also states that ULBs will need to identify SUP ‘hotspots’ and eliminate them, while parallely lever-

aging the support of state pollution control boards and forming special enforcement squads, conducting surprise inspections and imposing heavy fines and penalties on defaulters for enforcing SUP bans. As per the Plastic Waste Management (Amendment) Rules, 2021, the manufacture, import, stocking, distribution, sale and use of carry bags made of virgin or recycled plastic less than 75 microns (75 µ i.e. 0.075 mm in thickness) has been banned with effect from Sept 30, 2021 as opposed to 50 microns recommended earlier under PWM Rules, 2016, the ministry said.

HYDERABAD, JUN 4 (PTI): Biological E Limited on Saturday announced that its COVID-19 vaccine Corbevax has been approved by the Drug Controller General of India (DCGI) as a heterologous booster dose. The vaccine maker said the Corbevax can be administered as a booster dose to individuals aged 18 years and above after six months of administration of primary vaccination (two doses) of Covaxin or Covishield vaccines for restricted use in emergency situation. Corbevax is the first such vaccine in India to be approved as a heterolo-

gous Covid-19 booster in the country, it said. Recently, BE furnished its clinical trials data to the DCGI which after a detailed evaluation and deliberations with Subject Experts Committee, granted their approval for administering Corbevax as a heterologous booster dose to people who have been vaccinated. BE’s clinical trial data showed that its Corbevax booster dose provided significant enhancement in immune response and excellent safety profile required for an effective booster. BE has conducted a multi-centre Phase-III placebo controlled heterolo-

gous booster clinical trial in 416 subjects from 18 to 80 years of age who were previously vaccinated with two doses of either Covishield or Covaxin at least six months prior to the administration of Corbevax as a booster, the release added. Corbevax is entirely developed and manufactured by BE Limited in association with Texas Children’s Hospital and Baylor College of Medicine as a recombinant protein sub-unit vaccine against COVID-19. BE has supplied 100 million doses of the jab to the Central government so far. K Y M C

BJP, Cong announce names of Mnp CSO warns PMO of new Kuki movement candidates for Tripura by-election

Correspondent

IMPHAL, JUN 4: A Manipur based civil society organization (CSO), in a memorandum submitted to the Prime Minister of India on Saturday asserted that emergent of a new Kuki sovereignty movement is a big threat to the peaceful co-existence of different communities in the state as well as national security in the long run. Pe o p l e ’s A l l i a n c e for Peace and Progress, Manipur (PAPPM) was referring to the recent claim by police of the existence of People’s Democratic Republic of Kukiland with the arrest of its president Mark T Haokip. “The recent discovery of a new Kuki sovereignty movement under the banner of People’s Democratic Republic of Kukiland with Mark Haokip as president solves many puzzles that have been happening in the state of Manipur recently,” PA P P M s t a t e d i n t h e memorandum. It also urged the Prime Minister to help the state government to take the necessary steps for complete eradication of poppy plantation in Manipur, awarding severe deterrent punishment to drug smugglers, protection

of reserved and protected forests as well as stopping the false claim of the areas of the state as ancestral land by some Kuki groups. It stated that poppy cultivation for opium was in existence in Manipur for more than a decade, but production has increased manifold in the last few years. S u r p r i s i n g l y, t h e poppy plantation and drug smuggling continued to be on rise thereby indicating that some powerful forces are involved in these illegal activities. “The emergence of People’s Democratic Republic of Kukiland for an independent Kukiland strongly suggests that their idea of Kuki sovereignty is the driving force behind the continuation of poppy c u l t i va t i o n a n d d r u g smuggling,” PAPPM stated. Another sensitive issue in the fore was establishment of new villages inside reser ved and protected forests as well as wildlife sanctuaries. Analysis of census data showed that the population of Thadou/Kuki tribes in Manipur increased from 56,467 in 1981 to 1, 21,994 in 1991, a growth rate of 116.04 % which is impossible to predict naturally. Further, the population

increased to 1, 82,594, again with an extremely high growth rate of 49.67 %, which cannot be achieved naturally without transfer of population from outside Manipur. Comparing the decadal growth rate of 116.04% in 1981-91 periods with all India growth rates of 23.86% during the same period confirmed that the growth of population was not natural. Similarly the growth rate of 49.67 % during 1991-2001 period was more than double the all India average growth rate of 21.34 % which again suggests unnatural growth. Reserved forests and protected forests in Manipur were notified mostly in 1960s and 1970s and there has been no recent nonfiction for new reserve forests or protected forests for the last many decades. Many new villages inside reserved and protected forests have sprung up after the 1980s and many of them claim to be belonging to Thadou/Kuki tribes. This illegal encroachment combined with the mass poppy cultivation has destroyed the reserved and protected f o r e s t s t h u s a dve r s e ly affecting the environment and threatening the life

of many people through landslides, mudflow and floods. There was a concerted effort to rechristen the Kuki/ Thadou/Zou uprising of 1917-1919 as Anglo-Kuki War. Many of the tribes belonging to Thadou/Kuki came to Manipur when they were driven out of Lushai Hills and Cachar by the Lushai tribes in the mid nineteenth century. They were given shelter by Maharaja Narsing (18441850). The Thadou/Kuki tribes were patronized by the Britishers and Maharaja of Manipur and many joined the Manipur Army. T h e r evo l t k n ow n earlier as Khognjai or Thadou or Zou uprising or rebellion against the forced conscription of labour for Indian Labour Corps by the British Authorities to be sent to France was now being attempted to rechristen as Anglo-Kuki War to project a notion that some sort of Kuki State/Kingdom existed when the uprising took place. “This is an attempt to lay down the foundation for a future Kuki independence m o ve m e n t , a r m e d o r otherwise,” the PAPPM stated in the memorandum. On the other hand, Kukis have started claiming

holy places of Meiteis and other communities living in the state as their ancestral land. Less than ten percent of the geographical area of Manipur is valley and rest is hilly area making Manipur a hilly state. Archeological evidence of Paleolithic, Haobinhian and Neolithic Age has been found in Manipur. “We all know that later a powerful Kingdom of more than 2000 years of written history could be established with the participation of all people in the present Imphal valley, Kabaw valley, Cachar valley upto Sylhet as well as people living in the surrounding hills,” it stated. Many mountains and hilltops are the abode of various deities representing the ancestors and hence the holy places for the Meiteis as well as for other communities who have shared a long historical experience with Meiteis. Every year people go for pilgrimage on the top of these hills and mountains and pay respect to their ancestors. To the dismay of all living in Manipur for a long time, some Kuki groups all of a sudden have started claiming these mountains and hills as Kuki ancestral land.

AGARTALA, JUN 4 (PTI): The opposition Congress and the BJP on Saturday announced names of candidates for by-poll to Assembly constituencies in Tripura. By-election to four seats -- Town Bardowali, Agartala, Surma and Jubarajnagar -- is scheduled to be held on June 23, two of which would see nominees of the grand old party locking horns with CPI(M) and BJP candidates. Earlier in the day, the saffron party in Delhi has also declared the names of its candidates for the four seats. Former MLA Sudip Roy Barman, who quit the saffron camp and joined the Congress in February, will lock horns with BJP vice president Ashok Sinha in Agartala constituency. He had won the seat by a comfortable margin in 2018. Similarly, Asish Saha of the grand old party is up against the Chief Minister Manik Saha, who is also the state BJP president, in Town Bardowali. Saha, who is not a member of the Assembly, was sworn in as the new chief minister on May 15, a day after Biplab Kumar Deb stepped down from the post.

Tripura Congress President Birajit Sinha with party leader Sudip Roy Barman and others, Saturday. (PTI)

Tripura Pradesh Congress Committee president Birajit Sinha said, “We have fielded two tigers in two Assembly seats for winning the by-election. The party will strongly resist the activities of bike-borne miscreants during the byelection.” Opposition parties in the state had been alleging that bike-borne miscreants, “backed by the BJP”, were unleashing terror across the state. Roy Barman asserted that the Congress would support a candidate of a “like-minded party” in one of the two seats where it has not fielded any leader. “Our sole intention is to defeat the saffron party in the by-election. If we feel we are not in a comfortable

position in a certain seat, the party will not hesitate to render support to the candidate of another likeminded party. We can go to any extent to defeat the BJP,” the Agartala nominee added. The CPI(M) and the TMC have also declared names of their candidates. B y p o l l s t o To w n Bardowali and Agartala were necessitated after BJP MLAs Roy Barman and Saha quit the party and the membership of the Assembly to join the Congress. Surma was vacated by Ashish Das as he joined the TMC only to later quit the camp, while death of sitting MLA Ramendra Chandra Debnath necessitated byelection to Jubrajnagar.

Post-mortem

June 5 is World Environment Day

VOL. XXXII NO. 179 DIMAPUR, SUNDAY, JUNE 5, 2022

Giving rules the go-by

A

two-day pen down strike was launched from June 3, 2022 by the Nagaland Assembly Secretariat Staff Association (NASSA) in protest against what it described as the “unilateral’ manner in which the Nagaland Legislative Assembly Secretariat (Recruitment and Conditions of Service) Rules 1999 as amended in 2012 with the ‘Nagaland Legislative Assembly Secretariat (Recruitment and conditions of Service 3rd Amendment) Rules 2022’. The reason why the NASSA has objected to the amendment is because it was made not only to facilitate extension of service of the retired incumbent commissioner & secretary of the assembly but also promote the retired office to the rank of principal secretary NLA. The post of principal secretary is an IAS cadre post and equivalent to that of additional chief secretary. NASSA said that Service Rules were amended to suit the interest of the retired commissioner & secretary for extension of service through insertion of a provision where a superannuated officer can be appointed on deputation in the Assembly Secretariat till the age of 65 years. According to NASSA the recently amended rule 2022 was contradictory to the Nagaland Retirement from Public Employment (Second Amendment) Act 2009, which governs all the employees of the State Government. Even CANSSEA, the apex body of state employees described the amendment 2022 as irrational, dictatorial, absolute, irresponsible and contradictory to the Nagaland Retirement from Public Employment (Second Amendment) Act 2009, which governs all the employees of the State Government. As per the current retirement rule, an employee of the state services is to retire on attainment of 60 years of age of 35 years of service or whichever is earlier. According to Rising People’s Party (RPP), after his retirement from government Service at the Centre, the retired incumbent was appointed first as Commissioner and Secretary for two years w.e.f June 1, 2020 to May 31, 2022 on contract basis. Then on completion of deputation, the services of the officer was extended further and promoted and posted as Principal Secretary (contractual) w.e.f June 1,2022. It was also pointed out that the clauses in the amended rules were framed in such a way that the conditions for the post of principal secretary appear to fit all the qualifications of the retired officer. The RPP also pointed out that the controversy was not the only instance in the legislative assembly under the United Democratic Alliance (UDA). According to RPP, the Gauhati High Court Kohima Bench had set aside a recent restructuring of cadre post of additional secretary, Nagaland Legislative Assembly (NLA). Perhaps this may have been done since it continues to be a feature of those in power. Such decisions are against the interests of serving officers who have put in many years of service. It may also be pointed out that there has been gradual erosion of service rules in Nagaland where many officers of non- IAS cadre are brought on deputation and appointed to cadre posts. As per rule, an officer on deputation but who is not from IAS or IPS cadre can be employed on regular or contract basis to the post requiring special or technical qualifications. What is being observed since the past decade is arbitrariness where rules and conventions in Nagaland exist merely to serve as symbols. It is because in Nagaland rules are relative to the political interests as there is always a quid pro quo involved.

DailyDevotion The Never-forsaking God

He Himself has said, “I will never leave you nor forsake you.” —Hebrews 13:5

What line of thinking do my thoughts take? Do I turn to what God says or to my own fears? Am I simply repeating what God says, or am I learning to truly hear Him and then to respond after I have heard what He says? “For He Himself has said, ‘I will never leave you nor forsake you.’ So we may boldly say: ‘The Lord is my helper; I will not fear. What can man do to me?’ ” (Hebrews 13:5-6). “I will never leave you…”— not for any reason; not my sin, selfishness, stubbornness, nor waywardness. Have I really let God say to me that He will never leave me? If I have not truly heard this assurance of God, then let me listen again. “I will never…forsake you.” Sometimes it is not the difficulty of life but the drudgery of it that makes me think God will forsake me. When there is no major difficulty to overcome, no vision from God, nothing wonderful or beautiful— just the everyday activities of life— do I hear God’s assurance even in these? We have the idea that God is going to do some exceptional thing— that He is preparing and equipping us for some extraordinary work in the future. But as we grow in His grace we find that God is glorifying Himself here and now, at this very moment. If we have God’s assurance behind us, the most amazing strength becomes ours, and we learn to sing, glorifying Him even in the ordinary days and ways of life.

NAGALAND POST, DIMAPUR SUNDAY, JUNE 5, 2022

W h a t i s Wo r l d Environment Day? World Environment Day is celebrated across the world on 5th June every year, since 1974. Wo r l d E n v i r o n m e n t Day is the largest global platform for environmental public outreach and is celebrated by millions of people across the world. The United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) organizes events for Environment Day every year to encourage worldwide awareness and action for the protection of environment. years since the first United Nations Conference on H u m a n E nv i r o n m e n t which was held in Stockholm Sweden from June 5- 6 in 1972 that led to the creation of UNEP and designating 5th June as World Environment Day every year. In 1974, the first Word Environment Day was celebrated with the theme “Only One Earth”. Under the theme ‘Only One Earth’, World Environment Day 2022 will be observed highlighting the need to live sustainably in harmony with nature by transformative changes in our policies and choices towards cleaner and greener lifestyles. W hy Wo r l d E nv i r o n m e n t D ay i s important? It reconnects us to nature: Sometimes we forget just how much natural systems support our own well-being. But we’re part of nature, and we de pend on it. So,

today’s the perfect occasion to go out and enjoy your country’s national parks, and celebrate the vital relationship. It raises awareness: More and more people are starting to understand that we need to sustainably m a n a g e o u r p l a n e t ’s resources and ecosystems. However, that belief is far from universal. That’s why World Environment Day is so important: it provides an occasion to raise awareness and teach friends and family that the physical environment is fragile and indispensable. But before yo u b e g i n p r o m o t i n g environmental awareness in your own community, make sure that you have a thorough understanding of environmental issues yourself. There’s always more to learn! I t e n c o u r a ge s u s to take action: The environment has become increasingly polluted with contaminants and toxins,

and these have a harmful impact on our health. They can cause respiratory diseases and cancer—and that’s just for starters. By raising awareness of the issues with the air that sustains us, World Environment Day inspires us to do something about it and fix the environment we can’t live without. Earth faces a triple planetary emergency: • The climate is heating up too quickly for people and nature to adapt; • Habitat loss and other pressures mean an estimated 1 million species are threatened with extinction; • P o l l u t i o n continues to poison our air, land and water. #OnlyOneEarth is the campaign for World Environment Day 2022. It calls for collective, transformative action on a global scale to celebrate, protect and restore our planet.

The poor will suffer even if emission rates fall drastically

H ow t o o b s e r ve World Environmental Day? Make a commitment to recycle: It might seem like a basic tip, but are you really taking every possible opportunity to recycle? Next time you’re thinking about throwing that piece of paper in the trash because a recycling bin isn’t accessible, think twice. Holding a plastic container and too lazy to see if it’s one of the biodegradable kinds? Open up your smartphone and look it up! Everyone’s responsible for reducing greenhouse gas emissions — including you. Plant a tree: Trees absorb odours and pollutant gases (nitrogen oxides, ammonia, sulphur dioxide, and ozone) and filter particulates out of the air by trapping them on their leaves and bark. Placed strategically around a single-family home, they can cut summer air

such as cloud-based platforms for existing water technology. While such solutions can call for significant investment, national and local governments can look at supporting businesses to adopt sustainable solutions through grants and subsidies, such as the Green Jobs Act in the Philippines. And this doesn’t have to stop at the municipal level— our renewed relationship with water can start right at home. Homeowners can adapt their consumption rate for the better through digitalization and data, keeping an eye on our water usage and responding with “water-wise” behavior. Striving for circularity. Beyond addressing our carbon footprint by being a water steward, tackling our vast use of resources is equally important. As manufacturers, we have all the responsibility to strive for circularity and promote reuse, repair, remanufacturing, and recycling, notably through recycling and reuse initiatives and implementing take-back programs. It is also crucial that industries ensure wastewater is effectively treated to a quality that makes it possible to feed back into our water cycles. However, to establish best practices and compliance toward a sustainable supply chain, industry collaboration is key. Notably, the global Rare Earth Industry Association or REIA is working with organizations, including Grundfos, to tap into blockchain to help companies improve the transparency and sustainability of their supply chains when it comes to critical and rare earth materials. By combining expertise and knowledge across industries and academia, we can accomplish much more in advancing our s u p p ly c h a i n s t owa r d o u r sustainable ambitions. Planning for the next 50 years. Fifty years ago, the world’s first environmental movement was sparked through the Stockholm Conference. Since then, we have seen the power of what we can achieve through collective action. By working toward a common goal, we can achieve monumental change. So far, we have seen sustainability as a movement gaining tremendous traction. However, we need to do more and at a faster rate. This World Environment Day (June 5), let us continue to march together, and with each conscious step toward our sustainability goals, let us remember we only have one chance and only one earth. Moosewala’s parents urge Shah for CBI probe

Amit Shah meets family members of Punjabi singer & Congress leader Sidhu Moose Wala, who was shot dead in Punjab recently, in Chandigarh, Saturday. (PTI)

CHANDIGARH, JUN 4 (PTI): The parents of slain singer Sidhu Moosewala met Union Home Minister Amit Shah at the Chandigarh airport here on Saturday, BJP sources said. In the meeting, Moosewala’s father Balkaur Singh is learnt to have demanded a probe by central agencies into the brutal murder in Punjab’s Mansa district on May 29. Union Home Minister

Shah arrived in Chandigarh on Saturday and held a meeting with Punjab BJP leaders. He will be leaving for Panchkula in Haryana to inaugurate the ‘Khelo India Youth Games’. The parents of Moosewala, who was shot dead by unidentified assailants, earlier left for Chandigarh from their residence in Mansa. Moosewala’s family had earlier written a letter to Shah seeking a probe

by central agencies into the murder of the famous Punjabi singer, according to Union Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat. Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann visited Moosewala’s home on Friday and assured his family that his killers would soon be put behind bars. According to the autopsy report, Moosewala’s body bore 19 bullet injury marks.

BJP announces bypoll candidates Mumbai records Mohd Azam Khan respectively after winning the assembly polls. For the Rajinder Nagar assembly seat in Delhi, the BJP has fielded Rajesh Bhatia. The seat became vacant following senior AAP leader Raghav Chadha’s election to Rajya Sabha from Punjab. Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha is the BJP’s candidate from the Town Bordowali assembly seat. Saha, a Rajya Sabha member, was recently appointed the state’s chief minister, replacing Biplab Deb. In Tripura, the party has fielded Ashok Sinha from Agartala, Swapna Das Paul from Surma (SC) and Malina Debnath from Jubarajnagar. The party has nominated Gundlapalli Bharath Kumar Yadav from the Atmarkur assembly seat in Andhra Pradesh and Gangorti Kujur from Mandar (ST) in Jharkhand. The by-election to three Lok Sabha and seven assembly seats across six states will be held on June 23, according to the Election Commission. The third parliamentary seat is Sangrur in Punjab which was vacated by Bhagwant Mann, who became the chief minister of the state after the Aam Aadmi Party won the recently held assembly polls there. Votes will be counted on June 26 and the notification for the bypolls will be issued on May 30, the EC had said in a statement.

889 COVID-19 cases, one death

MUMBAI, JUN 4 (PTI): Mumbai on Saturday reported 889 new coronavirus infections, an increase from 763 cases added a day before. The caseload in the metropolis thus rose to 10,68,897, and death toll reached 19,568, a civic official said. The city had recorded 846 cases on February 4, after which the cases declined. But the numbers began to increase in the last few days. The recovery count increased by 329 to touch 10,45,035, leaving the city with active caseload of 4,294, up from 3,735 on Friday. Of the 889 new cases, only 45 needed hospitalisation and three of them required oxygen support, the official said, adding that currently 154 COVID beds are occupied in the city and 14 patients are on oxygen support. Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) data showed the overall number of tests carried out in the city stood at 1,71,75,173, including 10,257 in the last 24 hours.

Efforts on to introduce ethanol in agriculture etc: Gadkari

PUNE, JUN 4 (PTI): Union Minister Nitin Gadkari on Saturday stressed on the need to switch to alternative fuel like ethanol and said efforts are on to introduce ethanol in construction and agriculture equipment. The Union road transport and highways minister said the country imports petroleum products worth Rs 10 lakh crore to meet the requirements in the energy and power sector, and in the next five years, the demand may go up to Rs 25 lakh crore, which will affect the economy. Gadkari was speaking at the state-level Sugar Conference 2022 organised by Vasantdada Sugar Institute in Pune. “Alternative fuel is the future. After electric scooters, cars and buses, soon we will have electric tractors and trucks. I am going to launch these soon,” Gadkari said. Diesel-based agriculture equipment should be made petrol based and flex engines can be converted to run on ethanol, he said, adding that efforts are on to introduce ethanol in construction equipment as well.

Highlighting the need to shift from sugar production to ethanol, the minister said, “The rise in sugar demand across the globe is temporary. When the price of crude oil goes up to $140 per barrel, Brazil produces ethanol from sugarcane, increasing the demand for sugar from India. When the price of crude oil dips to $70 to $80 per barrel, Brazil starts producing sugar.” When crude oil becomes cheaper, sugar prices will also come down drastically, he said. Gadkari also asked Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar to set up ethanol pumps in Pune, to help farmers sell the fuel directly. Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray, who addressed the conference virtually, said sugar producers in the state were facing several problems. “We have to follow Brazil for market research. They (Brazil) conduct surveys and accordingly choose a crop in a year. Times are changing and accordingly, we should adopt technology. The future will be ethanol,” Thackeray said.

CHANDIGARH, JUN 4 (PTI): In a major setback to the Congress in Punjab, four of its leaders and former ministers Raj Kumar Verka, Balbir Singh Sidhu, Sunder Sham Arora and Gurpreet Singh Kangar joined the BJP here on Saturday. Fo r m e r C o n g r e s s MLA from Barnala Kewal Dhillon and former SAD MLAs Sarup Chand Singla and Mohinder Kaur Josh also joined the BJP. They joined the BJP in the presence of Union ministers Gajendra Singh Shekhawat and Som Parkash,

state unit chief Ashwani Sharma, and senior party leaders Dushyant Gautam, Tarun Chugh, Sunil Jakhar and Manjinder Singh Sirsa. Balbir Sidhu, a threetime MLA from Mohali, was the health minister in the previous Congress government, while Gurpreet Kangar, a three-time MLA from Rampura Phul, was the revenue minister. Verka, a prominent Dalit leader from the Majha region, is also a threetime legislator and was the minister for social justice and and empowerment and

minorities in the previous government. Sunder Sham Arora, a former MLA from Hoshiarpur, was the industry and commerce minister in the previous Congress government. Balbir Sidhu’s brother Amarjit Singh Sidhu, who is the mayor of Mohali corporation, also joined the BJP. Union Home Minister Amit Shah arrived in Chandigarh on Saturday for a meeting with party leaders and inaugurating the Khelo India Youth Games in Haryana’s Panchkula.

Rijiju expresses concern over rise in pending cases in courts

RAIPUR, JUN 4 (PTI): Union Law Minister Kiren Rijiju on Saturday said the speed at which the number of pending cases is rising in various courts of the country is a matter of concern. He also said the increase in pending cases does not mean that matters are not being heard or disposed of, rather it is because the number of fresh cases is double than cases being settled daily. He was addressing the inaugural function of the new office premises of the Income Tax Appellate Tribunal (ITAT) Raipur bench in the Central Secretariat building, Nava Raipur Atal Nagar. “When I assumed charge as Law Minister there was around 4.50 crore pending cases (in various courts). That number has reached over 4.50 crore and will touch 5 crore. (However) it does not mean that cases are not being disposed of but the number of new

cases is double the cases being settled. For example, if a High Court settles 300 cases in a day, 600 fresh cases come up for hearing”. “It is needed to closely understand this. The rate of disposal of cases has increased and the effective use of technology is helping in the speedy settlement of cases...But the speed at which the number of pending cases is increasing is worrying. Business is increasing therefore disputes are rising. If there is no business then there would be no cases. In a way, it is a positive thing but there should be some solution to the positive development,” he said. Rijiju also hailed ITAT and said it has reduced its pendency of cases during coronavirus-enforced lockdowns. Underlining that timely delivery of justice should be done, otherwise delayed justice has no value, the

Kiren Rijiju

Union Minister said, “During my interaction with judges of the Supreme Court and High Courts I have told that we (his ministry) are ready to extend all support but it should be ensured that timely justice is delivered to people. There should be no distance between justice and common people”. He said details of pending cases will be put

up online. “(the details will include) the court in which the case is being heard and for how long, the reason for the pendency, the name of the concerned bench and lawyers. This will put pressure on judges and lawyers,” the law minister said. Rijiju also informed that a big proposal on ecourts is in the offing. He also emphasised the use of local languages in the court. “I get worried. I have seen since my childhood that in our country, some people who know English think they are big, smart and knowledgable. “It’s good to learn English as well as other languages too. There is no loss in doing so. It has been seen in Delhi that lawyers

who know good English get big cases in the Supreme Court and High Court, but those who don’t know (good English), don’t get cases. This is not good. You don’t give them cases because they don’t know English. This mentality is very bad. In tribunals, there should be a provision of translation,” he said. Union Minister of State of Law and Justice SP Baghel, Raipur Lok Sabha MP Sunil Kumar Soni and ITAT president GS Pannu were present on the occasion.

NEW DELHI, JUN 4 (PTI): The BJP on Saturday announced its candidates for the June 23 bypolls for assembly and parliamentary seats and fielded Ghanshyam Lodhi from Rampur Lok Sabha constituency in Uttar Pradesh, from where Union minister Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi’s candidature was highly speculated after he missed out on a Rajya Sabha nomination. The BJP currently does not have any Muslim member in Lok Sabha. The tenures of its all three Muslim Rajya Sabha members -Naqvi, M J Akbar and Syed Zafar Islam -- are ending within a month or so. Naqvi had contested from Rampur a few times and won once. Sources in the party suggested that Naqvi himself was not very keen on contesting from the seat this time. Lodhi, a Samajwadi Party MLC who had joined the BJP ahead of the 2022 Uttar Pradesh assembly elections, will contest from Rampur. The BJP has once again fielded Bhojpuri star Dinesh Lal Yadav ‘Nirahua’ from the Azamgarh Lok Sabha seat. ‘Nirahua’ had unsuccessfully contested the 2019 parliamentary election from Azamgarh against Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav. The Azamgarh and Rampur constituencies were vacated by Samajwadi Party leaders Akhilesh Yadav and

RBI to go for 0.40% rate hike in next meet

NEW DELHI, JUN 4 (PTI): The Reserve Bank is expected to go for another rate hike of 0.40 percent at the scheduled review of the monetary policy next week, a foreign brokerage said on June 4. The central bank’s ratesetting panel will follow it up with a 0.35 percent hike in rates at the next review in August, or make it into a 0.50 percent hike next week and a 0.25 percent increase in August, to make the total quantum of rate hikes at 0.75 percent, the report by Bofa Securities said. On May 4, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) hiked rates by 0.40 percent, and Governor Shaktikanta Das has already called a rate hike at the forthcoming review as a “no brainer” given the pressure to maintain its core mandate of inflation in the targeted band of under 6 percent. The report from the brokerage said it sees the headline inflation for May to come at 7.1 percent due to a sharp increase in tomato prices. While mentioning about measures like the excise duty cuts on fuel

products, duty-free imports of crude soyabean and sunflower oil and cut in ATF prices, the report said such moves will help avoid a runaway increase in inflation. However, it said the consumer price inflation will average 6.8 percent— much above the RBI’s tolerance limit of 6 percent—in FY23. The central bank will itself do an upward revision of its estimate to 6.5 percent in FY23 from the present 5.7 percent, it added. “... we expect the RBI MPC to hike policy repo rate by 0.40 percent in June and 0.35 percent in August. We must highlight that for the sake standardised steps, the chances of delivering

a 0.50+0.25 percent hike combination is quite high too,” the report said. The key thing is that RBI MPC exits ultra-accommodation by August and takes policy repo rate to the pre-pandemic level of 5.15 percent, it said, adding that if inflation continues to be high after that, the RBI will take the repo rate to 5.65 percent by end of FY23. The brokerage said it also sees another 0.50 percent hike in the Cash Reserve Ratio (CRR) or the ratio of demand deposits parked by lenders with the RBI without any return, as the central bank moves to normalise liquidity conditions by withdrawing excess stock.

NAGALAND POST, DIMAPUR SUNDAY, JUNE 5, 2022 BUSINESS/STATE SBI loses market Indian wheat must not be re-exported Services activity share in debit card up fastest in 11 yrs DELHI, JUN 4 to 3rd country, says Piyush Goyal NEW spends in FY22 (AGENCIES): Activity in

NEW DELHI, JUN 4 (AGENCIES): State Bank of India (SBI) lost market share in debit card spends between March 2021 and March 2022, even as it managed to hold on to or improve its share in most other lines of business. The lender’s annual report for FY22 showed that its share in debit card spends fell to 27.58% at the end of the year, from 29.23% at the end of March 2021, FE reported. SBI grew its share in the network of point of sale (POS) terminals to over 15% from 13% in March 2021. In home loans, too, the bank gained share, accounting for 35.3% of all mortgages given by banks in India, up from 34.53% a year ago. SBI also gained some share in advances and deposits. Increasing market share in its various lines of business is an important focus area for SBI. In a post-results call with investors last month, chairman Dinesh Khara had said the bank was aware of the areas where it needed to improve its performance.

NEW DELHI, JUN 4 (AGENCIES): India has put a precondition that wheat exported at a government-to-government level should be used for domestic consumption only and not exported to third countries, Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal said on Friday. “We are insisting that any country that wants wheat from us should ask only for its local population and commit that it will not allow a re-export. Our concern was that traders, speculators and hoarders should not get a control of this valuable wheat and then charge exorbitant prices from poor and vulnerable nations, causing distress to the people of the world. We want to support the less developed, friendly and neighbouring countries to the extent that we can,” Goyal said. Business Standard on May 26 reported that India had received special requests from the UAE, South Korea, Oman and Yemen for wheat after the government banned exports on May 13. Goyal said an inter-

Piyush Goyal

ministerial committee comprising representatives from agriculture, food, foreign affairs examine and approve requests from friendly nations who have asked for wheat from India, depending on their population size. While imposing the export ban, the commerce ministry said export will be allowed on the basis of permission granted by the Government of India to other countries to meet their food security needs and based on the request of their governments. The government also allowed a wheat consignment of 61,500 Mt for Egypt after the export ban. It was already under loading at the Kandla port. Goyal said India had asked the World Trade Organisation (WTO) to

allow a relaxation of rules so that whenever some country needs support on a government-to-government basis, India can supply wheat to the country from the government procured stock. “It will be a matter of discussion when I go to the WTO’s upcoming 12th Ministerial,” he added. If farmers lost out due to the wheat exports ban by the government, Goyal said farmers had already sold their produce. “This is evident from the fact that after the wheat ban was introduced, we only got 600,000 tonnes through government procurement. Having sold their produce, if traders would have indiscriminately exported it at high profit, beyond a point it would have been harmful for our own food security and our own requirement and prices could have sky-rocketed,” he added. Goyal said as of now he doesn’t see chances of putting restrictions on export of any other agriculture products. “Those are decisions which we don’t disclose before we take the decisions.

the country’s crucial services sector expanded at its strongest rate in over 11 years in May on the back of sharp growth in new business as demand recovered after the lifting of curbs. But input cost inflation jumped to a record high, a survey showed on Friday. Posting a reading of 58. 9 in May, up from 57. 9 in April, the S&P Global India Services PMI business activity Index indicated the fastest rate of expansion in over 11 years. Anecdotal evidence suggested that the upturn in output reflected better underlying demand and strong inflows of new work. The S&P Global India Services PMI is compiled from responses to questionnaires and serves as an advance indicator of demand conditions in the sector. The latest data revealed an acceleration in growth of new business. The increase was sharp and the quickest since July 2011. But inflation showed no signs of abating as price gauges showed an unprecedented increase in input costs and the second-fastest upturn in selling charges in just under five years.

NEW DELHI, JUN 4 (AGENCIES): Leading industrialist Gautam Adani on Friday committed an investment of Rs 70,000 crore in Uttar Pradesh at the third edition of the UP Investors Summit in Lucknow. Speaking at the event, the billionaire investor said this investment will create 30,000 jobs in India’s most populous state. Out of this investment, Rs 11,000 crore has already been spent on projects like transmission and green energy. “We are investing over Rs 70,000 crore in the state. We anticipate that this investment will create over 30,000 jobs,” Adani said. The group is

Citing the assassination attempt on the life of Dr. S.C. Jamir at Piphema, Therie said he was shocked to learn that all accused were acquitted. He claimed that someone had told him that the judgment looked like Jamir had attempted his own life. Stating that fish farming was one the most promising activities that could be developed in the state, GM said that the state produces around 9400 Metric Tonnes (MT) of fish, of which 7000 MT comes from domestic production, while 8000 MT were imported. Tiakala said the state should try to produce more so all domestic needs could be achieved internally instead of depending on imports. She lamented so far the state could only developed only 10% of the fishery potential area, adding that the state still has 90% of potential area that could be exploited for the development of fisheries. She, however, lamented that the type of agriculture practiced in the state was not sufficient for them to generate any surplus income for themselves. He stated that if farmers were to adopt integrated farming system, one would have crop culture along with livestock farming and fishery activates. She said that the system doubles farmer income

VHP demands Karnataka mosque to be returned MANDYA (K’TAKA), JUN 4 (PTI): Amid heightened security arrangements, Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) activists staged a demonstration in Srirangapatna town of the district here, demanding the Jamia mosque be returned to Hindus claiming that it was a Hanuman temple razed by the 18th century ruler Tipu Sultan. Defying prohibitory orders imposed in the temple town under Section 144 of the CrPC to prevent any untoward incident, large number of Hindu activists took out a motorcycle rally heeding the call of VHP’s ‘Srirangapatna Chalo’ campaign. Wearing saffron scarves, turbans and saffron flags, the activists raising ‘Jai Sri Ram’ slogans. The activists recited ‘Hanuman Chalisa’ and ‘Ram Bhajan’ at a nearby temple. According to the police, the protesters were barred from marching towards the mosque. No untoward incidents were reported in the town. Earlier in the day, Sriram Sena chief Pramod Muthalik condemned the ruling BJP government for

A Bajrang Dal activist from here, Manjunath, who was part of the agitation, told PTI that the mosque was a Hanuman temple with its gopuram (temple tower) razed by Tipu Sultan and it got converted into Jamia Masjid in Srirangapatna, which was the capital of the

ruler of Mysore Kingdom. “The mosque is an Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) protected monument where no one should stay as per rule. However, nearly 100 people including some Bangladeshis reside there and a Madrassa (Islamic seminary) also operates there, which is against the law,” the activist claimed.

“Tragically, the ASI and the district administration are silent on these blatant violations,” he said. He further said the right-wing organisations will approach the Karnataka High Court seeking a direction to the authorities to hand over the mosque to the Hindus. Officials reached the

spot and assured the agitators that their grievances will be communicated to the ASI. In order to avoid any untoward incident, the district police force and contingents of Karnataka State Reserved Police were deployed. The roads were barricaded and security pickets were erected in the town. Fearing a backlash, many shopkeepers around the shrine downed shutters for the day. The members of fringe Hindu outfits had called for a protest march to the mosque but the authorities denied them permission. The Sriram Sena chief Pramod Muthalik condemned the restrictions saying they should be imposed on ‘them’. “There is a Ganapati temple, a temple tank and a well inside the mosque. Despite all these, mosques running Madrassas and offering namaz there is wrong. It is ‘they’ who should be stopped. They should be thrown out. I condemn the BJP government which is trying to stop our protest,” Muthalik told reporters in Kalaburagi on Saturday.

Punjab CM reviews law-and-order situation ahead of Op Blue Star anniv

Security personnel hold a flag march, ahead of the anniversary of Operation Blue Star, in Jalandhar. CHANDIGARH, JUN 4 (PTI): Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann on Saturday reviewed the lawand-order situation in the state ahead of the Operation Bluestar anniversary on June 6 and said the police have been put on high alert for maintaining peace. Operation Blue Star was carried out by the Indian Army in June 1984 to flush out militants hiding in the Golden Temple complex in Amritsar.

Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann on Saturday reviewed the law-andorder situation in the state ahead of ‘Ghallugara Diwas’ being observed on June 6, according to an official release. Chairing a meeting with senior officers of the police and civil administration, Mann asked them to ensure elaborate security arrangements before June 6 across the state. The chief minister

said no one should be allowed to disturb the hardearned peace of state at any cost. Asserting that his government is committed to making Punjab a peaceful and frontrunner state in the country, he said anybody trying to disrupt peace will be dealt with sternly. Some forces inimical to the progress and prosperity of the state are making constant attempts to derail the peace in the state. But the AAP government will not allow any such nefarious move to The Punjab Police has been put on high alert and central paramilitary forces have been deployed to assist them in maintaining peace in the state, the chief minister said. Exhorting the Punjabis to uphold the ethos of peace, communal harmony and brotherhood in the state, Mann urged them “to teach anti-Punjab forces a lesson by foiling all their conspiracies aimed at pushing Punjab back to the black days”.

SRINAGAR, JUN 4 (PTI): The BJP on Saturday took strong objection to making public the transfer list of Kashmiri Pandit employees and demanded action against the officials responsible for the leak, terming it a breach of security. According to the list, 177 Kashmiri Pandit teachers employed under the Prime Minister’s Rehabilitation Package have been transferred. The transfer list is being circulated on WhatsApp and other social media platforms. “Making the transfer list public on social media platforms is a big security breach as terrorists now have a clear idea who is posted where,” BJP spokesman Altaf Thakur said in a statement. He urged the government to take strong note of the leak and zero in on the people who made the list public at a time when targetted killings are taking place in the Valley. The BJP spokesman said that officers involved in the act should be reprimanded and action be taken against them. Thakur said while the government was taking serious steps for the protection of Kashmiri Pandits, some officials were playing spoilsport.

Thus, the impugned direction in para No.26 of order dated 31.05.2022 stands stayed,” said the court which listed the matter for further hearing on August 24. Jain was arrested on May 30 under the provisions of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) and the trial court on May 31 remanded him to the ED’s custody till June 9.

NEW DELHI, JUN 4 (PTI): The Delhi High Court has stayed a trial court order allowing the presence of a lawyer at a visible but not audible distance during the interrogation of Delhi Minister Satyendar Jain, arrested by the Enforcement Directorate in a money laundering case. Justice Yogesh Khanna observed that when there is credible material to indicate the real and live apprehension of a possible threat or coercion being employed at the time of recording of statement, such a direction may be passed but since there is no apprehension raised in the present matter, the direction ought not to have been given as a matter of right. The judge, who had on June 3 reserved its order on the Enforcement Directorate’s plea challenging the direction, further noted that since there is neither any FIR nor a complaint against the AAP leader, he cannot as a matter of right claim to have the presence of his lawyers during the course of recording of his

NEW DELHI, JUN 4 (PTI): A plea has been filed in the Supreme Court challenging a provision of the National Commission for Minorities (NCM) Act and seeking a direction to the Centre to define “minority” and lay down guidelines for identification of minorities at the district level. The plea sought to declare the notification on minority community, issued by the government on October 23, 1993, as arbitrary, irrational and contrary to Articles 14, 15, 21, 29, 30 of the Constitution. The petition was filed by Mathura-resident Devkinandan Thakur through advocate Ashutosh Dubey. It said the petitioner is filing this PIL under Article 32 to challenge the validity of Section 2(c) of the NCM Act 1992 for not only giving unbridled power to the Centre but also being manifestly arbitrary, irrational and offending Articles 14, 15, 21, 29 and 30 of the Constitution. It sought direction to declare that Section 2(c) of the National Commission for Minorities Act is void, unconstitutional and inoperative for being violative of Articles 14, 15, 21, 29 and 30 of the Constitution.

Stalin bats for environmentfriendly Tamil society

M.K. Stalin

C H E N NA I , J U N E 4 (IANS): Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin on Saturday called upon the people of Tamil Nadu to be more conscious about the environment and be environmental friendly. He was speaking after flagging off 25 e-vehicles that were handed over to Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board (TNPCB) officials as part of the environment day celebrations to be held on June 5. The vehicles, he said, will be pressed into service as part of the measures to reduce carbon footprint and global warming. The state exchequer has spent an amount

of Rs 3.42 crore for purchase of 25 e-vehicles, the Chief Minister said. Chief Minister Stalin also handed over the ‘Pasumai’ awards for protecting environment to district collectors, Aneesh Shekhar( Madurai), D. Mohan (Villupuram), and B. Murugesh (Tiruvannamalai). The awards were presented as part of the world environment day celebrations. Stalin also handed over the Pasumai Muthanmayilar awards to 79 institutions that include industries and educational institutions. Cash prizes and mementos were handed over to these institutions for promoting environment and taking initiatives against global warming. Minister of state for environment and Forest Siva V. The union government has announced in the CoP-26 (Conference of Parties) Summit that by 2030, India will reduce its carbon emissions by one billion tonne and try to become a net-zero emission economy by 2070, he said. But the cooperation of industries is very important in achieving this goal, he said, adding many companies around the world are already contributing to zero carbon economy. Therefore, it is expected from the representatives of industry and business that they would not only work towards reducing pollution in existing industries but also contribute in establishing new environment-friendly industries, he said.

Ravi Shankar Prasad

PATNA, JUNE 4 (IANS): Prime Minister Narendra Modi had managed to stop the Russia-Ukraine war for three hours to provide a safe passage to Indian medical students stuck in the conflict zone, former union law minister and senior BJP leader Ravi Shankar Prasad has claimed. While interacting with mediapersons here on Friday, Prasad said that the incident took place when the war was at its peak and a large number of Indian medical students were trapped in Ukraine. “It was a big challenge for the Indian government to evacuate medical students stranded in Ukraine due to war. When

PM Modi asked the high commissioners of India in Ukraine and Russia about the evacuation plan, they said that it is possible only when a ceasefire is observed. They also said that the PM was capable of doing it,” Prasad claimed. “Following their suggestions, the PM spoke to Russian President Vladimir Putin and his Ukrainian counterpart Volodymyr Zelensky to stop the war so that the Indian medical students could be evacuated from the affected areas. The PM told the leaders that he would not leave his children in a war zone. Following his conversation, the war was stopped for three hours to give safe passage to Indian students. This is the status of our Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the world,” Prasad said. A large number of Indian medical students were trapped in Kiev, Kharkiv, Mariupol and other cities after the war broke out between Russia and Ukraine on February 24.

ED requests UAE govt to keep watch on Abhishek Banerjee in Dubai

KO L K ATA , J U N E 4 (IANS): The Enforcement Directorate (ED), which is probing the coal and cattle smuggling cases in West Bengal, has requested the UAE government through the Ministry of External Affairs to closely monitor the movements of Trinamool Congress national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee and his wife Rujira Narula during their ongoing trip to Dubai. Accompanied by his wife, Abhishek Banerjee is currently in Dubai to undergo ophthalmological treatment. While the ED was unwilling to allow his Dubai trip, later a single-judge bench of the Calcutta High Court permitted him and his wife to travel to Dubai. However, before leaving for Dubai, the couple had to submit their travel details to the ED officials

Jamiat Ulama seeks SC intervention in plea against Places of Worship Act

NEW DELHI, JUN 4 (PTI): Muslim body Jamiat Ulama-i-Hind has filed a plea in the Supreme Court seeking intervention in a pending petition challenging the constitutional validity of the Places of Worship (Special Provisions) Act, 1991. The plea said that petitioner advocate Ashwini Upadhyay has raised grounds which have already been considered and decided by the constitution bench of the top court. Even if all the allegations of the petitioner are assumed to be true, it is nothing but seeking a correction of historical wrongs, the Muslim body said. “This court has categorically held that the law cannot be used as a device to reach back in time and provide a legal remedy to every person who disagrees with the course which history has taken and that the courts of today cannot take cognizance of historical rights and wrongs unless it is shown that their legal consequences are enforceable in the present. “In fact, this court categorically held that this court cannot

aftermath of the Ayodhya dispute will only be widened,” the plea said. The top court in March last year had sought the Centre’s response to a plea filed before it challenging the validity of certain provisions of the 1991 law, which prohibit the filing of a lawsuit to reclaim a place of worship or seek a change in its character from what prevailed on August 15, 1947. The petition alleges that the 1991 law creates an “arbitrary and irrational retrospective cut-off date” of August 15, 1947 for maintaining the character of the places of worship or pilgrimage against encroachment done by “fundamentalist-barbaric invaders and law-breakers”. The apex court had issued notice to the Centre on the plea filed by Upadhyay, seeking that sections 2, 3, 4 of the Places of Worship (Special Provisions) Act, 1991 be set aside on grounds including that these provisions take away the right of a judicial remedy to reclaim a place of worship of any person or a religious group.

as per the court order. It is learnt that through the Ministry of External Affairs, the ED sleuths have forwarded the travel details of the couple to the UAE government for the convenience of the latter to monitor their movements. The ED has briefed the UAE government about their interrogation in connection with the coal smuggling scam. Meanwhile, Bengal BJP President Sukanta Majum-

dar has raised questions over Abhishek Banerjee’s Dubai trip for ophthalmological treatment. According to Majumdar, when a number of hospitals in India provide the best ophthalmological treatment facilities, there was no justification of making a trip to Dubai for the same. Countering Majumdar’s claim, Trinamool Rajya Sabha member Shantanu Sen said that since the former is not a qualified doctor, he does not have the expertise or knowledge to comment on the issue. In fact, during the hearing in the Calcutta High Court, the ED counsels also questioned the justification of travelling to Dubai for ophthalmological treatment. However, the court ruled that the place of treatment is anyone’s personal choice.

NEW DELHI, JUN 4 (PTI): Denied relief by the trial court, Congress MP Karti P Chidambaram on Saturday approached the Delhi High Cour t seeking anticipatory bail in a case registered by the Enforcement Directorate in the alleged Chinese visas scam. The plea is likely to be listed for hearing on Monday. Karti moved the high court challenging the trial court’s June 3 order in which his anticipatory bail plea was dismissed. The trial court denied the relief to Karti and two others saying the offence was of a very serious nature. The court had also vacated the interim protection from ar rest granted to the accused during the pendency of the anticipatory bail application. It has directed them to join the probe as and when they are called upon by the investigating officer. The ED registered the money laundering case against Karti and others in

The trial court had said the nature and gravity of the alleged offences, the nascent stage of the investigation and also the previous criminal antecedents of accused Kar ti P Chidambaram and S Bhaskararaman do not make a case for grant of anticipatory bail to the applicants. The court also was against any further interim protection to them from joining the investigation in this case , saying it would seriously

hamper the process and progress of the investigation. It had also noted that there were four other cases - two by CBI and two by the ED concerning both alleged INX Media and AircelMaxis scams - pending before it, and both Karti and Bhaskararaman were even arrested in one of such cases and were subsequently granted regular bail, though a n t i c i p a t o r y b a i l wa s granted to them in the other cases. The ED’s counsel had contended that even in the previous cases, a similar modus operandi was adopted in granting approvals for some financial transactions against the existing guidelines and policies for illegal considerations or bribes. Bhaskararaman was also involved in transactions of those cases for payment of a bribe to Karti for inf luencing his father, who was holding another portfolio of union minister at that time, for granting those approvals, the counsel alleged.

sought to maintain dialogue with Kremlin leader Vladimir Putin since Moscow’s Feb. 24 invasion, said the West should not humiliate Russia, so that it can keep the doors open for a solution to be reached through diplomacy. Ukraine, which says that Russia has already occupied about 20% of its territory, is now receiving more powerful weapons from the West. “Our armed forces are ready to use (the new weapons)...and then I think we can initiate a new round of talks from a strengthened position,” David Arakhamia, Ukrainian lawmaker and a member of the negotiation team, said on Friday. Among other things, the United States will give Ukraine precision HIMARS rocket systems allowing it to hit Russian positions from a longer-range.

Earth’s carbon dioxide levels hit record high the atmosphere further into territory not seen since the preindustrial age, NDTV report stated. As power plants, automobiles, farms, and other sources throughout the world continued to pump large amounts of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere, the concentration of the gas is highest in four million years. Emissions totaled 36.3 billion tons in 2021, the highest level in human history. “The science is irrefutable: humans are altering our climate in ways that our economy and our infrastructure must adapt to,” said NOAA’s

The relentless increase of carbon dioxide measured at Mauna Loa is a stark reminder that we need to take urgent, serious steps to become a more Climate Ready Nation,” Mr. Spinrad added. As the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere rises, the Earth warms, resulting in higher flooding, more intense heat, drought, and increasing wildfires, which are already affecting millions of people across the world.

Ousted prime minister Imran Khan had questioned the presence of Suleman in the delegation of Shehbaz that called on the Turkish president this week in Ankara. Shehbaz and his sons – Hamza and Suleman – were booked by the FIA in November 2020 under various sections of the Prevention of Corruption Act and Anti Money Laundering Act. The FIA investigation has said that it has detected 28 benami accounts, allegedly of the Shehbaz family, through which an amount of 14 billion Pakistani Rupees was laundered from 2008 to 2018.

NEW DELHI, JUN 4 (AGENCIES): The level of planet-warming carbon dioxide in Earth’s atmosphere reached a record high in May this year, continuing its relentless climb. Carbon dioxide levels are currently more than 50% than they were before the industrial revolution, according to a recently released databy National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). Scientists announced on June 3 that carbon dioxide measured at NOAA’s weather station atop the Mauna Loa volcano in Hawaii peaked in May at 421 parts per million, pushing

LO N D O N, J U N 4 (AGENCIES): Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, has accused “enemies” of Iran of stirring up unrest to try to overthrow the Islamic Republic. He said those who opposed Tehran hoped to use protests to strike a blow at the country. His comments come after several weeks of demonstrations in cities over the rising cost of basic foods. A deadly building collapse in the south last month sparked further protests blaming authorities for the incident. The ayatollah has long insisted that US sanctions are to blame for the soaring prices of basic foods in the country. “Today the enemy counts on popular demonstrations to strike the Islamic system,” he said in a televised address on Saturday. The enemy “hopes to turn the people against the Islamic Republic by psychological means, through the internet, money, and the mobilisation of mercenaries,” he said.

LAHORE, JUN 4 (PTI): Pakistan’s Federal Investigation Agency, which is probing Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and his son and Punjab Chief Minister Hamza Shehbaz in a multi-billion rupees money laundering case, on Saturday requested the court to allow their arrest for further investigation. The court, however, extended their pre-arrest bail until June 11. The FIA also filed an interim investigation report against the premier and other suspects in the Rs 14 billion (USD 75 million) money laundering case against them. Shehbaz and Hamza appeared before the Special Court amidst high security. “An FIA prosecutor submitted an interim investigation report in the court and sought arrest of prime suspects – Prime Minister Shehbaz and Punjab Chief Minister Hamza -- arguing that their custody is needed for further probe in the case as they have not joined the investigation and cooperated with investigators,” a court official told PTI. The prime minister’s counsel Advocate Amjad Pervez strongly objected to the FIA’s plea and termed it a “false assertion of the agency”. He said that the FIA had already investigated the father and the son when they were in jail in Lahore. He said that his clients

MOSCOW, JUN 3 (REUTERS): Russia’s Foreign Ministry said it was summoning the heads of U.S. media outlets in Moscow to a meeting next Monday to notify them of tough measures in response to U.S. restrictions against Russian media. “If the work of the Russian media - operators and journalists - is not normalized in the United States, the most stringent measures will inevitably follow,” ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said on Friday. “To this end, on Monday, June 6, the heads of the Moscow offices of all American media will be invited to the press centre of the Russian Foreign Ministry to explain to them the consequences of their government’s hostile line in the media sphere,” she added. “We look forward to it.” Russia has accused Western countries of imposing unfair restrictions on its media abroad, including bans on some state-backed news outlets. Lawmakers passed a bill last month giving prosecutors powers to shut foreign media bureaus in Moscow if a Western country has been “unfriendly” to Russian media. Washington has imposed sanctions against some state-run Russian TV stations, which it says have spread disinformation to bolster Russia’s war in Ukraine. Asked about the summoning of U.S. media outlets in Moscow, a spokesperson for the State Department said the United States supports access to media and the internet for Russians, who are being subjected to censorship by their own government. “The Kremlin is engaged in a full assault on media freedom, access to information, and the truth,” the spokesperson said by email. Since invading Ukraine in February, Russia has cracked down on media coverage of the conflict, introducing 15-year prison sentences for journalists spreading intentionally “fake” news about what it calls its “special military operation” in Ukraine. The law prompted some Western media to pull their journalists out of Russia. Other Western organizations, including Reuters, have stayed in the country and continue to report. Russia says it is engaged in a “special military operation” to disarm and “denazify” its neighbor. Ukraine and allies call this a baseless pretext for a war that has killed thousands, flattened cities, and forced more than 6 million people to flee abroad.

Death toll climbs to 128 from heavy rain in Brazil

BRASILIA, JUN 4 (IANS): The death toll from heavy rain in Recife, capital of the Brazilian state of Pernambuco, and its metropolitan area has risen to 128, local authorities said. Over 9,300 people have been evacuated and 34 municipalities have declared a state of emergency, Pernambuco Governor Paulo Camara said at a press conference. Camara added that rescue efforts for possible survivors have come to an end, reports Xinhua news agency. (Free Burma Rangers/AFP) BANGKOK, JUN 4 (AFP): Myanmar junta troops have torched hundreds of buildings during a three-day raid in the country’s north, local media and residents said, as the military struggles to crush resistance to its rule. The Sagaing region has seen fierce fighting and bloody reprisals since the coup last year, with local “People’s Defence Force” (PDF) members clashing regularly with junta troops. Analysts say the informal militia has surprised junta forces with its effectiveness, and the military has on numerous occasions called in air strikes to support its troops on the ground. Troops set on fire hundreds of buildings in the villages of Kinn, Upper Kinn and Ke Taung over three days last week, locals and media reports said. On May 26, villagers

in Kinn fled as soldiers approached and began shooting into the air, said one resident who requested anonymity. “The next morning we saw smoke rising from our village before they left. “Over 200 houses were burned down... my house was totally burned down, only the concrete foundation is left.” Drone footage purporting to show the aftermath obtained by AFP showed columns of smoke rising into the sky from the villages, set along a roughly eight-kilometre stretch of the Chindwin river. A health clinic seen in the video matched the geolocation of one in Ke Taung village. AFP digital verification reporters confirmed the footage had not appeared online before last week but could not independently verify reports from the region. Soldiers “raided and

destroyed our houses”, said Ke Taung villager Aye Tin, who requested to use a pseudonym. “And they also burned motor boats that we use for transport and for carrying food for our village, including my boat. “My life is ruined, as I have lost my home... and I nothing left to do for a living.” Satellite images from US space agency NASA showed fires in locations that matched Ke Taung and Kinn villages last week. The junta has previously rebuffed claims its troops have torched houses, accusing “terrorist” PDF fighters of starting the fires. In a speech on Tuesday, junta chief Min Aung Hlaing said “efforts were made to minimise the casualties as much as possible in performing the counterattacks to terror acts.”

Japanese man becomes oldest to sail across Pacific

TOKYO, JUN 4 (AFP): An 83-year-old yachtsman arrived in Japan early Saturday morning after a solo, non-stop trip across the Pacific, becoming the oldest person ever to achieve the feat. Famed ocean adventurer Kenichi Horie’s arrival in the Kii Strait off western Japan capped a two-month trip that started from a yacht harbour in San Francisco in March. It was only the latest seagoing achievement by the Japanese octogenarian, who in 1962 voyaged from Japan to San Francisco at age 23, becoming the first person in the world to sail alone across the Pacific. The public relations team for his most recent voyage said Horie’s Saturday return to Japan made him the

My condition was the worst,” he blogged in April. “But this time it’s different, I was sent off by many people and have their support through tracking systems and wireless radio. I couldn’t be more grateful.” Aside from his 1962 Pacific crossing, Horie is known for sailing around the world solo in 1974 and his longitudinal voyage around the world between 1978 and 1982. The latest expedition was the first he had undertaken since 2008, when he sailed from Honolulu to the Kii Strait on a wavepowered 31-foot boat.

ISLAMABAD, JUN 4 (IANS): Pakistan has welcomed the ceasefire announced by the banned Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), as the federal government for the first time publicly acknowledged it was negotiating a peace deal with the outlawed outfit, the media reported. The confir mation from the gover nment came a day after the TTP extended the ceasefire for an indefinite period after the Pakistani tribal jirga visited Kabul and held talks with the TTP leadership, Express Tribune reported. Both sides have been holding talks for the last several weeks but the Pakistani side until now re-

negotiations have been taking place at the government level,” the minister said in a statement confirming the peace talks with the banned group. The minister also confirmed that the Afghan Taliban government was acting as a mediator between the two sides. She said civil and military rep-

resentatives were part of the Pakistani side holding talks with the TTP. She said the government welcomed the ceasefire announced by the TTP. The truce was to expire on May 30 but the TTP extended it now for an indefinite period as both sides were trying to reach a peace deal.

What Is Isolated Systolic Hypertension? KK died of heart attack: Final autopsy report W

Krishnakumar Kunnath on Tuesday evening, KK had complained of uneasiness a number of times and even went to the backstage restroom to take rest. Doctors feel that those were subtle signals of the forthcoming danger, which those present there, including KK himself, might have ignored. Had KK insisted on concluding the performance and rushed to a nearby hospital, there could have been a possibility of avoiding the unfortunate end. There are also reports that due to overcrowding of the auditorium, which was filled almost double the seating capacity, the air-conditioning machines lost much of their cooling effects, resulting in suffocation. killer.” What Problems Can It Cause? All types of high blood pressure, including isolated systolic hypertension, can slowly damage the inside of your arteries and cause tiny tears in their walls. A chemical called LDL cholesterol can build up in those damaged blood vessels and form a layer called plaque. That makes your arteries narrower and raises your blood pressure even higher. When that happens, the arteries that carry oxygen to your heart can get blocked, and that can lead to a heart attack or a stroke (when blood flow is limited or cut off to part of your brain). It also can make blood vessels in your brain burst, and that can cause a

pressure is too high, your doctor may prescribe medicine to help bring it down. Drugs used to control blood pressure include: Diuretics (water pills) to help your kidneys flush water and sodium from your body; Beta-blockers to make stroke, too. In other parts of your heart beat slower and your body, it can strain the less forcefully; Angiotensinblood vessels in your eyes converting enzyme (ACE) and make you lose your eyesight or damage the arteries around your kidneys so they don’t filter your blood the way they should. Who Gets Isolated Systolic Hypertension? Older people are more likely to have it, because systolic blood pressure usually goes up as you age. More than 30% of women over 65 and more than 20% of men have this condition. If your parents had high blood pressure, you may be more likely to have it. African-Americans are more likely than other groups to have high blood pressure. How Is It Treated? If your systolic blood

There are lots of good reasons for this, but nicotine in cigarette smoke can raise your blood pressure. Lower the amount of salt in your diet. Cut back on alcohol if you drink. he final post-mortem and chemical analysis reports of playback singer Krishnakumar Kunnath, popularly known as KK, was handed over to the Kolkata Police on Saturday. Both the reports cited ‘myocardial infarction’ as the cause of the singer’s death. As per the final postmortem report, cholesterol accumulation narrowed the posterior intramuscular artery to a great extent which affected the pumping of blood by the heart. There were blockages in the coronary artery as well. Sources in Kolkata Police said that they had taken up the investigation by filing an FIR relating to unnatural death. “But after the preliminary and final post-mortem reports, as well as the chemical analysis report, the theory of unnatural death can be ruled out now,” said an official on condition of anonymity. hen your doctor takes your blood pressure, they’ll tell you two numbers: The first is your systolic blood pressure -- the force on your arteries as your heart pumps blood. The second is your diastolic blood pressure -- the force on them when your heart is resting. They’ll say the numbers as systolic pressure “over” diastolic pressure. For example, a healthy reading is below 120 over less than 80. If your systolic blood pressure is higher than 130 but your diastolic blood pressure is under 80, that’s called isolated systolic hypertension. It’s the most common kind of high blood pressure in older people. You probably won’t know you have it unless your doctor tells you -- there usually aren’t any noticeable signs of it until it causes serious health issues. That’s why high blood pressure is sometimes called “the silent

Swiatek clinches French Open title

PARIS, JUN 4 (IANS): Capping off her flawless clay-court season, World No. 1 Iga Swiatek clinched the French Open singles title after beating No 18 seed Coco Gauff 6-1, 6-3 in the final, here on Saturday. Two years ago, Swiatek shocked the field by winning her first Roland Garros title as an unseeded teenager. This time, the polish star claimed her second French Open title by winning a staggering 35th consecutive match, tying Venus Williams for the best winning streak this century. Venus’ historic run of 35 straight victories came in 2000. If Swiatek manages to win her next match, she will hold the best winning streak of the century alone, and tie Monica Seles’s 36-match run from 1990. Another victory after that would tie Martina Hingis’s 37-match winning streak from 1997. Swiatek also becomes only the tenth woman to win multiple Roland Garros singles titles in the Open Era (since 1968). Having just turned 21 on Tuesday, Swiatek is the fourth-youngest player to triumph more than once in Paris -- only Monica Seles, Stefanie Graf, and Chris

Evert were younger when they did so. She is also the youngest woman to win multiple majors since Maria Sharapova won her second Grand Slam title aged 19 at the 2006 US Open.

Swiatek’s latest triumph is her sixth title of the year, all coming in a row during her winning streak (following Doha, Indian Wells, Miami, Stuttgart and Rome). She is the first player to win six

titles in a row since Justine Henin in 2007 and 2008. On the other hand, Gauff, the third-youngest player to reach a Grand Slam singles final this century at 18 years and 84 days old, made a valiant

effort in her first major final, collecting enough games to just surpass that average. However, Swiatek was too tough at key moments, converting five of 10 break points and claiming 60 percent of points off of Gauff ’s second service. Swiatek cracked the match open after a lengthy third game when she converted her fifth breakpoint to take a double-break lead for 3-0. At 5-1, a stirring backhand return winner forced an error from Gauff, giving Swiatek her third break of the day and a oneset lead. Gauff created some intrigue right away in the second set, drawing errors from the top seed as she earned her only break of the match en route to 2-0. However, Swiatek regrouped, finding sterling returns to get back on track and win the next five games successively. Gauff gritted out a tough hold for 5-3, forcing Swiatek to serve for the championship, but the World No 1 was up to the task, as she has been all season. On her first championship point, Gauff sent a service return long, and Swiatek grasped her second major trophy.

Norway’s Ruud sets up French Open title clash with Nadal

PARIS, JUN 4 (IANS): Casper Ruud of Norway continued to excel at Roland Garros with the 23-year-old advancing to his first Grand Slam final, defeating Marin Cilic of Croatia 3-6, 6-4, 6-2, 6-2 to set up a title clash with Spanish stalwart and winner of 13 French Open titles Rafael Nadal. Prior to his French Open run to the final, Ruud had never reached a Grand Slam quarterfinal and his run to the final in Paris will see him rise to a careerhigh of world No. 6 on the ATP Rankings. The eighth seed will face Nadal, winner of a record 21 Grand Slams, for the first time as he bids to deny the Spaniard a recordextending 14th Roland Garros crown and 22nd Grand Slam singles title. Ruud has trained at Nadal’s academy in Mallorca since September 2018, adding to the intrigue ahead of the title clash, according to atptour.com. “It is amazing. He is the last player of the Big 3 and the very top players in the world I have never played against,” Ruud said of Nadal after securing a

place in the final. “So I guess this is perfect timing and worth the wait. To finally play him in a Grand Slam final will be a special moment for me. Hopefully a little bit for him as well. “He (Nadal) has played so many finals, but at least he is playing a student from his academy this time. So it is going to be a fun one hopefully,” added Ruud. “It was a great match (against Cilic) from my side,” Ruud said. “I didn’t start the greatest, but Marin also played well in the first set. I was too defensive and then I was able to break him in the second set and that got me going again.

From that break I played some of my best tennis this year. Serving well, playing aggressive, So I am super happy with my performance today.” Ruud improved to 3-0 against Cilic in their ATP head-to-head, with one win each year since 2020. Following the victory, Ruud rises above Carlos Alcaraz to No. 6 in the ATP Live Rankings. He is now projected to reach a careerhigh in Monday’s ATP Rankings. An eight-time tour-level titlist, Ruud’s best performance at a major prior to his run at Roland Garros this year came at the Australian Open in 2021 where he reached the fourth round.

Meanwhile, Carlsen defeated Dutchman Anish Giri in the Classical game to pick up three points and join Anand in the lead. In another decisive game in round four, Azerbaijan’s Shakhriyar Mamedyarov defeated Hao Wang, while Teimour Radjavov and the experienced Topalov won via the Armageddon against Vachier-Lagrave and Aryan Tari (Norway) respectively.

BUENOS AIRES, JUN 4 (IANS): Carlos Tevez has confirmed he will pursue a career in management, seven months after officially ending his playing days. The 38-year-old revealed on Saturday (IST) he is in the process of obtaining his coaching badges and declared himself ready to take charge of a top-flight club. “I made the decision that I’m going to be a manager,” Tevez told Argentine television programme Animales Sueltos, Xinhua reports. “I’m ready to do it now. I’m learning how to communicate. It’s something I have to prepare for. I’m not going to accept a job with any old club and just tell the players they have to win or we’re all in trouble. I have to give the players the necessary tools to win.” Tevez announced his retirement last November after a career that included spells at Boca Juniors, Corinthians, West Ham, Manchester United, Manchester City, Juventus and Shanghai Shenhua.

Venus Williams (USA) and Serena Williams (USA) change sides during their match in the BNP Paribas Open.

LONDON, JUN 4 (AP): The elite duo of Serena and Venus Williams did not feature on the women’s singles entry list released by Wimbledon. It is possible that either player could request a wild-card invitation to the Grand Slam tournament, which begins on June 27. Serena has won seven of her Open era record 23 major singles championships at the All England Club, most recently in 2016. The 40-year-old American was the runnerup there in 2018 and 2019

and has not competed anywhere since injuring her right leg and needing to stop playing in her firstround match a year ago. Venus is a five-time singles champion at Wimbledon and has seven major singles trophies in all. Her most recent match on tour came at Chicago last August. She turns 42 in two weeks. Also missing from the entry list is Leylah Fernandez, the 2021 US Open runner-up who injured her right foot during a loss at the French Open this week.

NATIONS LEAGUE: Denmark upset France; Netherlands beat Belgium ‘If you can become even 50% like your

BRUSSELS, JUN 4 (AP): Denmark stunned titleholder France 2-1 in their opening Nations League match at the Stade de France, ending the world champion’s seven-match winning streak. After Karim Benzema put the hosts in front, substitute Andreas Cornelius scored twice to earn Denmark its first win over France since the 2002 World Cup. Cornelius leveled with a fine volley then hit the winner in the 88th minute. France was unbeaten in its past 20 matches. It will next travel to Croatia, which lost to Austria 3-0 at home in Group A1. Meanwhile, Memphis Depay scored twice as the Netherlands produced its first win against bitter rival Belgium in 25 years by 4-1 in Brussels, in another group of the the top-tier League A. A we e k a f t e r t h e Champions League final was marred by crowd chaos, there were no reported incidents at the Stade de France this time. France was under pressure in the opening 10 minutes but gradually found the right balance and created its first good

chance in the 13th minute through Benzema, back at the Stade de France a week after he claimed the Champions League trophy for Real Madrid. The move signaled a good spell of dominance for France, with Benzema and Kylian Mbappé combining well to unsettle Denmark’s defense. Denmark managed to keep the hosts at bay by closing down space. Mbappé, who appeared to pick up an injury, was replaced by Christopher Nkunku after the break. He had an immediate impact and in the 51st minute set up Benzema, who dribbled his way past defenders and shot low for

his 37th international goal. But Cornelius beat the offside trap and volleyed into the net in the 68th. Christian Eriksen came close in the closing stages but France keeper Hugo Lloris made a decisive reflex save to deny his low strike. Cornelius then gave Denmark the win after connecting with a lofted ball. He resisted defender William Saliba’s challenge and fired into the top corner. In Brussels, Belgium started well but quickly faded as its preparations for the World Cup began with a worrying defensive display in the absence of their first-choice goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois.

“Mostly we were really distracted,” Leandro Trossard said. “We gave them way too much space. When we got the ball we immediately lost it. The Netherlands have shown that they are a very strong team that can hurt everyone.” The Oranje had 11 attempts on goal in the first half and broke the deadlock five minutes before the interval. After collecting a pass from Frenkie De Jong with his back to the goal, Steven Bergwijn quickly turned and unleashed a 25-meter strike into the net. Romelu Lukaku endured a frustrating night, leaving the pitch after 27 minutes after getting a

knock, having touched only a few balls. Depay doubled the Netherlands’ lead after a poor pass from Dedryck Boyata was intercepted in midfield. Steven Berghuis launched the counter with a deep pass for Depay, who beat Simon Mignolet with a powerful strike. Denzel Dumfries made it 3-0 in the 61st, and Depay completed his brace soon after from Daley Blind. Michy Batshuayi scored a consolation goal in stoppage time. The four group winners in League A will qualify for the final four in June next year. The group winners in the lower leagues will gain promotion.

NEW DELHI, JUN 4 (AGENCIES): Arjun Tendulkar was bought by Mumbai Indians for Rs 30 lakh in Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 mega auction in February this year and fans were expecting the 22-yearold to finally make his debut this season. But that was not to be as Arjun did not get a chance to showcase his skills, NDTV reported. There has been a buzz surrounding Arjun and when the left-arm seamer would make his IPL debut. Former India captain Kapil Dev has said that people should leave him alone, and the message to the youngster should be to just enjoy his cricket. Kapil Dev also said that having the Tendulkar surname has its advantages and disadvantages, but in the end, everyone should remember that Arjun is just a young boy. “Why are you talking about him? You are talking about him because he is Sachin Tendulkar’s son. Let him play his own cricket and do not compare him with Sachin. Let me tell you something about Don Bradman, his son changed his name because he could not deal with that kind of

pressure. He removed the surname Bradman because everyone was expecting him to be like his father,” Kapil said on Uncut YouTube channel. “Don’t put pressure on Arjun. He is a young boy. It is unfair. To have a Tendulkar name has its advantages and disadvantages as well. Who are we to say anything to him when Sachin has been such a big player? But I would still just like to tell him one thing Go and enjoy yourself. No need to prove anything. If you can become even 50 percent like your father, there is nothing better. When the name Tendulkar comes up, our expectations rise because Sachin was such a great. We should just let him be and

we should tell him to just enjoy his cricket,” he added. Earlier, Sachin Tendulkar had spoken about how the path is going to be challenging for Arjun but it is important to do hard work. “This is a different question. What I am thinking or what I feel is not important. The season is already over,” Tendulkar had said at on his YouTube channel ‘SachInsight’. “And my conversation with Arjun has always been that the path is going to be challenging, it is going to be difficult. You started playing cricket because you are in love with cricket, continue to do so, continue to work hard and results will follow,” he added.
