India, Bhutan resolve to expand already close ties
from 5 April 2023
NEW DELHI, APR 4 (PTI): Against the backdrop of renewed focus on the Doklam issue, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Bhutanese King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck on Tuesday sketched a five-point broad roadmap to expand the “time-tested” relations besides delving into respective national security interests.
The talks between Modi and the visiting king took place days after Bhutan’s Prime Minister Lotay Tshering said that China has an equal say in resolving the border dispute relating to the strategically-located Doklam tri-junction.

When asked at a media briefing whether the Doklam issue figured in the talks, Foreign Secretary Vinay Kwatra said IndiaBhutan ties are based on mutual respect, trust, close understanding and sensitivity to each other’s concerns, adding Modi and the king covered the entire gamut of bilateral cooperation including issues of “respective national interests”. Kwatra said the proposed rail link project between Kokrajhar (Assam) and Gelephu (Bhutan) will be expedited and that it would be the first ever rail link between the two countries.
“Besides this exemplary and unique relationship that India and Bhutan have, we also have a time-tested framework of security cooperation, and as part of that, both countries maintain a long standing tradition of very close consultations on matters relating to their mutual interests, and of course, security also,” he said reply-

ing to the Doklam issue.
“Now, in this context, the intertwined and indivisible nature of our security concerns is self-evident,” he said. Kwatra said India very closely follows all developments having a bearing on its national interest and it takes all necessary measures to safeguard them as necessary.
“As regards the recent statements and the related commentary to them is concerned, I would say that one -- India and Bhutan remain in close touch relating to our shared interests includ-
India rejects China renaming places in Arunachal
NEW DELHI, APR 4 (PTI): India on Tuesday outrightly rejected China renaming some places in Arunachal Pradesh, asserting that the state is an integral part of India and assigning “invented” names does not alter this reality.
India’s reaction came in response to Beijing announcing Chinese names for 11 more places in Arunachal Pradesh which the neighbouring country claims as
Nearly 14 lakh applications for CUET-UG
NEW DELHI, APR 4
(PTI): Nearly 14 lakh applications have been received for the Common University Entrance Test-Undergraduate (CUET-UG) this year, registering a 41 per cent increase from the debut edition last year, according to UGC Chairman, M Jagadesh Kumar.
CUET-UG remains the second largest entrance exam in the country in terms of applicants.
“In 2023 CUET-UG, a total of 16.85 lakh students registered (themselves).
Out of 16.85 lakh, 13.995 lakh paid the application fee and submitted the application form -- an increase of 4 lakh students (from last year). In 2023, there is a 41 per cent increase in the total number of students who will sit for CUET-UG,”
Kumar said.
In the debut edition of CUET-UG, 12.50 lakh students registered themselves and 9.9 lakh of them submitted their applications.
The National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test Undergraduate (NEET-UG) for medical admissions is the largest entrance test in India with an average of 18 lakh registrations.
The maximum number of applications for CUET-UG have been received for Delhi University, followed by Banaras Hindu University and Allahabad University.
Among the applicants, the maximum is from Uttar Pradesh, followed by Delhi and Bihar.“We have also seen an increase in the number of participating universities.

southern part of Tibet.
Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) spokesperson Arindam Bagchi said India outrightly rejected China’s renaming of the places in Arunachal Pradesh.
“We have seen such reports. This is not the first time China has made such an attempt. We reject this outright,” Bagchi said.
“Arunachal Pradesh is, has been, and will always be an integral and inalienable ing our security interests,” he said.
“I would only reiterate our earlier statements on this issue which very explicitly and very clearly bring out our position on the determination of the trijunction boundary points,” he added.
The Doklam plateau is considered an important area for India’s strategic interest.
The Indian and Chinese armies were locked in a 73-day stand-off at the Doklam tri-junction in 2017 after China tried to extend a road in an area that Bhutan claimed belonged to it.
In October 2021, Bhutan and China signed an agreement on a “three-step roadmap” to expedite negotiations to resolve their festering boundary dispute. Bhutan shares an over 400-km-long border with China.
In a tweet, Modi described his meeting with the Bhutanese King as “warm and productive”. The prime minister also hosted a lunch for the visiting dignitary.
(PTI): West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Tuesday accused the BJP of organising violence during Ram Navami processions and asserted that she would not let any rioter go scot-free and warned that strict action would be taken against “dangabaaz” (rioters).
Addressing a rally in Purba Medinipur district, Banerjee also took a dig at Union Home Minister Amit Shah without naming him and pointed out that BJP had said if it comes to power in Bihar, it would hang rioters “upside down” and wondered why such action was not being taken against “their ‘goondas’”.
Clashes were reported in Hooghly and Howrah districts during Ram Navami processions over the last few days.
“The BJP is behind the violence in Hooghly and Howrah. They had brought in hired ‘goondas’ from other states to unleash violence in Bengal, which is not in our culture. They are defaming the Hindu religion by pitting one community against another. But rioters have no religion, they are just political goons. I appeal to everyone to maintain calm,” she said.
Taking a dig at Union Home Minister Amit Shah, without naming him, she said, “The BJP said if the party comes to power in Bihar, it would hang rioters upside down. Then why are they not doing that to their `goondas’ who are fomenting trouble in Bengal? Charity begins at home.”
Shah had made the remark during a recent public rally in Nawada district of Bihar, which has also witnessed communal clashes during Ram Navami.
Taking potshots at the CPI(M), she alleged that ‘Baam’ (Left) and ‘Ram’ (BJP) have joined hands against the TMC.

HYDERABAD, APR 4 (PTI): AIMIM president Asaduddin Owaisi on Tuesday blamed the JD(U)-RJD government in Bihar and the TMC government in West Bengal for allegedly failing to check the recent incidents of violence during Ram Navami.
He also attacked the Bihar Chief Minister and Deputy Chief Minister and said they failed to stop the violence despite receiving intelligence reports about the possibility of such incidents taking place.
“Wherever there is violence, the responsibility lies on the state governments concerned. It is their know when and where BJP will start violence,” she said, adding that people in the “processions organised by BJP” have been found carrying weapons.
“It is the failure of the respective state governments that failed in discharging their duty of stopping the violence. It is pre-planned conspiracy of (those) people who indulge in violence. It is the failure of the state governments, whether it is the West Bengal government, whether it is the Bihar government, and whether it is the mob lynching of Idrees Pasha in Karnataka...What was the government doing?” Owaisi asked.
Bengal Police have arrested a man from Bihar’s Munger for allegedly carrying a gun during a Ram Navami procession in Howrah district last week, a senior officer said on Tuesday.
“He has been arrested from Bihar’s Munger. During interrogation, the youth admitted that he carried a revolver with him during the Ram Navami procession. He was seen in the video. We have handed over him to the state CID,” the officer told PTI. Banerjee said as people in Bengal didn’t take part in violence, the BJP has started bringing in people from outside the State to incite violence.
“Bengal government is making all efforts to restore the livelihood of those affected by the violence. We had recently passed a law where losses suffered during organised protests would be compensated by attaching and auctioning off the alleged vandals’ properties,” she said.

Missing the wood for trees
It is now nearly six decades since statehood yet economic progress has not moved forward in desired way and the factor responsible has been the domination of politics over economics. The changing faces of development taking place has not been lost to those in Nagaland who realise the urgent need to create the environment towards economic sustainability and progress. The fate of two million people cannot be decided by a concept that has no realistic goals for economic development, except being adept at spending billions of rupees in the name of building and construction of infrastructure. The net result is huge economic inequality between haves and haves not. Amid the emerging trend towards globalization where political barriers become redundant, Nagas also have to adopt a clear and firm economic strategy while deciding on the pathway of progress. A state having land mass of 16,579 sq.kms may have been borne out of a political necessity but it wasn’t a desert like Israel or as tiny as Sikkim(7,096 sq/kms). Today Sikkim, which became a state in 1975, is way ahead of Nagaland in many areas especially productivity in the agro-industrial field. Nagaland became a state in 1963 with an abundance of not only natural resources but tremendous human resource potential among its 16 tribes and various other communities. despite nearly 69years of statehood, Nagaland has yet to create a stable economy owing to the peculiar nature policies that is a mix of welfare-cum-private entrepreneurship. The contrast between the rural and urban is slowly giving rise to a phenomenon between the privileged, less privileged and under privileged. Social problems continue to mount as society is confronted by loss of authority by the government and existence of several parallel authorities. Thus, it may be stated that while crmes are ascending, morality is descending. Who can deny that corruption whether by politicians or bureaucrats under whatever nexus under the sky is as rampant as the fact that in the end, silence or inaction is bought with either money or threat? If those in authority claim that peace exists today, then it has a strange way of manifesting itself through various actions that have created deep concern among the law abiding citizens. Society is hurting and the environment exudes a fissiparous uncertainty which could prove disastrous in the near future. The bond of unity in truth, the first strand of Naga awareness, is being removed and replaced by tribal hegemony. These are just a few of the uncharitable facts that seem to indicate, the society in general and the government in particular, which have lost a sense of right and wrong and a responsibility to ensure continuance of a just and fearless society and of moral authority. The symptoms are indeed very serious and these would continue unless people change to make the difference. Also the challenge against social stability needs preparation by evolving a process to build the foundation such as easily available power, empowering the youth, excellent communication networks and of course, tackling lawlessness with a firm hand. Whether this will find resonance with those in power is a million dollar question.
