Windfall from Oil exploration (survey)

Spl. Correspondent

NEW DELHI, JUN 4 (NPN): Three decades after the state government asked ONGC to stop extraction of crude oil from the Chanpang and Tssori oil wells in Wokha district and a decade after the central government in 2013 shot down the state government’s attempt to frame its own oil laws under Nagaland Petroleum and Natural Gas (NPNG) Regulation 2012, much has changed as oil and gas exploration is to be undertaken in Nagaland to confirm oil deposits.

After a tripartite talks between the Centre, governments of Assam and Nagaland, to undertake oil operations; on April 21, 2023 Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and Nagaland chief minister Neiphiu Rio, agreed in principle for oil operations along the Disputed Area Belt (DAB) on equal rev -

Shamator Town Students’ Union (STSU) has extended its support and solidarity with Shamator Town Public Forum (STPF) one month ultimatum served on the Health & Family Welfare (H&FW) department to fulfil its demands. The ultimatum pertained to lack of basic medical amenities, shortage of manpower and essential surgical instruments at Community Health Centre, Shamator.

STSU general secretary Rikhum and press and information secretary Kumriming alleged that the Primary Health Centre, Shamator and its consequent upgrade to CHC on May 7, 2014 had been deprived of various facilities since the inception. They said there was no healthcare equipment, medicines and proper infrastructure, let alone shortage of doctors, specialist, nurse and other technicians.

Citing the State budget allocation data, they said H&FW received one of the highest fund allocation. Even after 59 years of Statehood, they lamented that the suffering the people of Shamator had to endure was unimaginable, which they attributed to poor healthcare facilities.

They said the people of Shamator would lose faith if the department continued to display apathy. They pointed out that health was a fundamental human right and the district without access to proper healthcare was at risk. Hence, they urged the department to take note and give priority to STPF’s demand.

DIMAPUR, JUN 4 (NPN): Rengma Hoho (RH), Rengma Selo Zi (RSZ) and Rengma Mothers’ Association (RMA) have condemned the action of Naga Club of vandalising the NSF office in the wee hours of May 27.

In a joint statement, RH president Pollem Tep, RSZ Kenneth Kath and RMA Sojule Tep said that the consultative meeting of the Rengma frontal organisations held on June 2 appreciated both Naga Students’ Federation and Naga Club office bearers of the past and present for their yeoman’s service for persevering the

The most important factor is the initial step to obtain Petroleum Exploration Licence (PEL) or license to ‘explore.’ After confirming crude reserves, the next step would be to award Petroleum Mining Licence (PML) or license to ‘extract’ to drill oil wells for extraction.

An official source under the petroleum ministry explained applying this distinction in the present context would make public understand the difference between exploration (sur-

However, they viewed that the good image of Naga Club had been tarnished by the incident, which it described as an unprecedented act that bewildered and astounded entire Naga populace. “...the club office bearers owning responsibility, has provoked incredulity from all level of our Naga society,” they said. They said that the act had not only shattered the good image of Naga Club, but also had done an irreparable damage to the trust

As OIL mulls to start exploration in Nagaland, the company is planning to do a 3D seismic survey of 4000 sq km of area in Upper Assam. OIL has 3000 sq km of exploration acreage in Nagaland.

Though, geologically Nagaland is considered to be a prolific hydrocarbon bearing area, an official source disclosed that without knowing or having the accurate data of the oil reserves in Nagaland, the question of oil production does not arise.

It takes at least 10-15 years from exploration to production phase. For instance, if exploration (first phase) is carried in 2023, the actual production/extraction can only be carried out by 2035-38.

IMPHAL, JUN 4: Over

100 abandoned houses and shops including the house of a sitting Congress MLA was torched in the wee hours of Sunday even as sporadic violence and arson continued in strife-torn Manipur.

According to police, suspected militants torched the houses in Serou, a foot-

hill area in the Kakching district. The house of Congress MLA K Ranjit was among those burned down at Sugnu, police said.

Police said armed men launched simultaneous attack on security forces and houses in Sugnu. The incident took place at a time when security forces were carrying area domination out operation to flush out

While flushing out the militants, the combined force also rescued an injured youth who reportedly went missing after a gunfight broke out on May 29.

On the other hand, residents of the Sugnu area demanded immediate withdrawal of all security forces, including state police forces, from the area. They expressed strong resentment over the failure on the part of security forces to protect their life and properties.

DELHI, JUN 4 (AGENCIES/PTI):

Amid allegations and blame game swirling around the horrific Odisha train tragedy, Railway Minister Ashwini

Vaishnaw said on Sunday that the “root cause” of the crash and the “criminals” behind the act have been identified.

“It happened due to a change made in the electronic interlocking and point machine,” the minister told reporters in Balasore. The Commissioner of Railway Safety has finished an investigation and the govt is awaiting the report, he added.

Indian Railways, meanwhile, virtually ruled out driver error and system malfunction. Rail officials suggested a possible “sabotage” and tampering of the electronic interlocking system behind the crash that took at least 288 lives and left 1,175 people wounded.

In view of the emerging twists and turns, the Railway Board on Sunday recommended a CBI probe into the crash.

Explaining to media how the point machine and the interlocking system work, railway people insisted that the system is “error proof” and “fail safe”. They, however, did not rule out the likelihood of intervention from outside.

This kind of tinkering with the “logic” of the AI-based electronic interlocking system can only be “intentional”, PTI reported quoting a senior railway official who did not want to be identified.

According to Jaya Ver-

An

Sinha, Member

Operation and Business Development, Railway Board, “It is called a fail safe system, so it means that even if it fails, all the signals will turn red and all train operations will stop. Now, as the minister said there was a problem with the signalling system. It could be that someone has done some digging without seeing the cables. Running of any machine is prone to failures.”

“It could be a case of tampering or sabotage from within or from outside. We have not ruled anything out,” another senior officials told the news agency.

The crash that involved Bengaluru-Howrah Superfast Express and ShalimarChennai Central Coromandel Express and a goods train took place around 7 p.m. on Friday near the Bahanaga Bazar station in Balasore. The accident site is about 250 km south of Kolkata and 170 km north of Bhubaneswar.

The driver of the Coromandel Express, meanwhile, was given a clean chit, with

officials confirming that he had the green signal to move forward. They also affirmed he was not over-speeding. The preliminary ground report, widely reported in media, had said that the “Coromandel Express had entered the loop line at the station on which an iron ore-laden goods train was parked.” It had also suggested that tampering might have occurred as the signal was “given and taken off for the up main line for train number 12841 (Coromandel Express), the train entered the loop line, dashed the goods train and derailed. In the meantime, train number 12864 passed through the down main line and two of its coaches derailed and capsized.”

The electronic interlocking and point machine are key to train operations, Sandeep Mathur, Principal Executive Director of Signalling, Railway Board, told PTI. These two components work in tandem, indicating to the driver whether the track is clear or not.

six months from the date of its first sitting, the notification stated. The formation of the inquiry commission comes barely three days after Union Home Minister Amit Shah had visited the strife-torn State. On the concluding day of his four-day visit, he had announced a probe into the violent incidents and assured justice to all.

Shah stayed in the State from May 29 till June 1 and took first hand stock of the violence, while meeting and interacting with leaders of civil society organisations, intellectuals and prominent leaders of the warring Meitei and Kuki communities.

A notification by the Home ministry stated that

the commission will probe the causes and spread of the violence and riots targeting members of different communities.

The probe will look into the sequence of events leading up to the violence that began on May 3 and all the facts to such violence and whether there were any lapses or dereliction of duty in this regard on the part of any of the responsible authorities/individuals.

Adequacy of administrative measures taken to prevent and to deal with the violence and riots will also be looked into, besides considering such matters as may be found relevant in the course of inquiry. The commission will also inquire

i nto the complaints or allegations that may be made before it by any individual or association, accompanied by affidavits.

To be headquartered at Imphal, the panel could also submit an interim report to the Centre before the date, if deemed fit.

Besides announcing a judicial probe, Amit Shah had also disclosed that the CBI would probe into six specific conspiracy cases.

“The judicial inquiry and the CBI probe into the six specific conspiracy cases would be closely monitored by the central government,” Shah told the media in Imphal before leaving for New Delhi after a four-day visit to the restive Manipur.

New low-cost clip can monitor BP using your smartphone’s camera

NEW YORK, JUN 4 (IANS): US engineers have developed a simple, low-cost clip that uses a smartphone’s camera and flash to monitor blood pressure at the user’s fingertip. The clip, developed by a team at the University of California San Diego, works with a custom smartphone app and currently costs about 80 cents to make.

The technology, published in the journal Scientific Reports, can help make regular blood pressure monitoring easy, affordable, and accessible to people in resource-poor communities.

“Because of their low

cost, these clips could be handed out to anyone who needs them but cannot go to a clinic regularly,” said Edward Wang, Professor of electrical and computer engineering at UC San Diego.

To measure blood pressure, the user simply presses on the clip with a fingertip.

A custom smartphone app guides the user on how hard and long to press during the measurement. The clip is a

3D-printed plastic attachment that fits over a smartphone’s camera and flash. When the user presses on the clip, the smartphone’s flash lights up the fingertip. That light is then projected through a pinholesized channel to the camera as an image of a red circle. A spring inside the clip allows the user to press with different levels of force. The harder the user presses, the bigger the red circle appears on the camera. By looking at the size of the circle, the app can measure the amount of pressure that the user’s fingertip applies.

It may be noted that at the 2021 UN Climate

Change Conference (UNFCCC COP26), Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced Mission LiFE, to bring individual behaviours at the forefront of the global climate action narrative.

Mission LiFE is an India-led global mass movement to nudge individual and community action to protect and preserve the environment.

Arunachal Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Chowna

Mein on Sunday said the border state witnessed massive development in the past nine years after Prime Minister Narendra Modi took over as the prime minister of the country in 2014.

The Modi government is raising the northeast region by constructing worldclass infrastructure, Mein told reporters here as part of BJP’s month-long ‘Maha Jan Sampark Abhiyan’ which was launched by party President J P Nadda on May 31.

“Modi conceptualised six development pillars for northeast including roadways, waterways, airways, railways, digital connectivity and hydropower development,” he said, adding that the state government is also working based on these pillars. Highlighting

the success story of the nine years of the Modi government at the Centre and seven years of the Pema Khandu government in the state, Mein said that the prime minister always insisted on the development of the northeast, without which the country cannot progress.

He said to develop the border areas, the Centre had recently approved a package of Rs 44,000 crore for three mega road

Manipuri CSOs demand action against influx of ‘illegal migrants’

NEW DELHI, JUN 4 (PTI): Members of Manipuri civil society and students’ organisations on Sunday held a ‘peace rally’ at Jantar Mantar here and demanded that the government check the influx of “illegal migrants” into the state from Myanmar.

The rally, organised by the Manipur Coordinating Committee, Delhi, a group of civil society and students’ organisations, was attended by a large number of people from the state living in the national capital.

Chan Meitei, a member of the committee, said the rally was held for peace in Manipur and to lodge a protest against the “divisive forces and external aggression” faced by people in the state.

The participants demanded that the government stop “illegal migrants”

from Myanmar entering Manipur.

“The illegal migrants from Myanmar are responsible for the unrest and violence faced by Manipur. They indulge in poppy cultivation that has also added to deforestation on

the hills,” said Joy, a medical student from Thoibal in Manipur.

The committee members said the government should also check the violence by Kuki “militants” who migrated from Myanmar.

Assam-M’laya border row: Students’ bodies form joint peace committee

DIPHU, JUN 4 (AGENCIES): To discuss peace and tranquility in the border area of West Karbi Anglong and Meghalaya, the Karbi Students Association (KSA) and Jaintia Students Movement (JSM) held a joint meeting on Saturday at Karbi Hemtun in Guwahati, reports East Mojo.

Presided over by KSAcentral committee president Jemson Timung, the joint meeting was also attended by former presidents Robin-

dra Rongpi and Stalyn Ingti, general secretary Ramsiing Tokbi, and assistant general secretary Mohim Tisso.

Meghalaya was represented by JSM-central body president Leningstar Rymbai, working president Jimmy Raul Kharmuti and assistant general secretary Heybogme Thyrphet. At the meeting, both groups appreciated the efforts and initiatives of the leaders of KSA and KSM for easing tension prevailing in the areas along the

Assam-Meghalaya border and also expressed their opinions on maintaining peace along the inter-state areas.

The members of the student bodies stated that although mutual trust between the residents of villages located along the border might have diminished over time, it could not be denied that Karbis and Jaintia communities have had a long tradition of living together as amicable neighbours.

“All the stakeholders of Manipur are equally responsible to bring peace and development in the state.

Manipuri Kukis are our relatives, brothers and sisters and we are not against them,” said Prem Meetie, who also took part in the

rally. At least 98 people were killed and 310 injured in the ethnic violence that broke out in Manipur a month ago, the state government said earlier this week. A total of 37,450 people are currently sheltered in 272 relief camps.

Clashes first broke out on May 3 after a ‘Tribal Solidarity March’ was organised in the hill districts to protest against the Meitei community’s demand for Scheduled Tribe status.

Meiteis account for about 53 per cent of Manipur’s population and live mostly in the Imphal Valley. The tribal Nagas and the Kukis constitute another 40 per cent of the population and reside in the hill districts.

Around 10,000 Army and Assam Rifles personnel have been deployed to restore peace in the state.

projects.

The projects include the two-lane Frontier Highway (1465 km) with an estimated cost of Rs 27,349 crore, two-lane inter-connectivity corridor of 1,048 km worth Rs 15,720 crore and two-lane Brahmakund (Parshuram Kund) to Chowkham road (61 km) worth Rs 915 crore. The total road length of these upcoming projects will be 2,574 km.

“The detailed project reports (DPRs) of these projects are under progress,” he said.

The 2-lane Frontier Highway, to be built by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH), will pass through the districts of East Kameng, West Kameng, Upper Subansiri, Upper Siang, Dibang Valley, Lohit, Anjaw and Changlang. Once completed, it would help safeguard the country’s

borders with China and Myanmar, and control migration from border areas, besides improving tourism infrastructure.

MoRTH will also execute the 2-laning of inter-connectivity corridors which will pass through districts of Pakke Kessang, East Kameng, Longding, Changlang, Upper Siang, Upper Subansiri, Tawang, East Siang and West Siang, thereby bridging the gaps between NH-52 in Assam, Trans Arunachal Highway and Frontier Highway.

Mein said the Centre has launched the Vibrant Villages Programme (VVP) with a financial allocation of Rs 4,800 crore.

The scheme is aimed at the comprehensive development of villages in the border areas to improve the quality of life of the people, which would help in encouraging people to stay in their native locations in the

border areas and reversing migration.

The VVP will provide funds for the development of essential infrastructure and the creation of livelihood opportunities in 19 districts and 46 border blocks in four states and one union territory along the border of the country.

“We will also provide top-up funds in the Vibrant Village Programme along with executing standalone power projects in border areas of the state,” he added.

Lok Sabha MP from Arunachal East Parliamentary Constituency Tapir Gao, who was also present on the occasion, said that in the past nine years, the Modi government served the poor and marginalised, ensured farmers benefit, provided new momentum for nari shakti, ease of living for poor and worked on Nation first foreign policy and national security.

Assam launches NEP for higher educational institutes in state

GUWAHATI, JUNE 4 (IANS): The Assam government has formally launched the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 in higher educational institutions in the state on Saturday.

A ceremonial launch was attended by the Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma at Gauhati University.

Sarma said,: “The NEP was envisioned under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of preparing our youth for the future and its adoption marks a historic day for Assam. As a part of the policy, we should focus on imparting multidisciplinary education and preparing our students in a holistic and an enabling environment.” He appreciated the

higher education department of the state government and Gauhati University for the historic initiative which marked the rollout of NEP in Assam.

The Chief Minister also said that NEP 2020 had paved the way for transformative changes in the education sector of the country. He further mentioned that the state government has been taking committed steps since the beginning to implement this education policy, which is gradually turning into reality.

“In the journey for academic excellence in Assam, these initiatives will become milestones in the coming days,” he added.

Sarma stated that the new national education policy was a long-felt need

of the country. Prior to NEP 2020, three National Education Policies were introduced in India. The NEP 2020 has been brought in keeping with the shortcomings of the previous education policies and the current and future needs, which can lead to large-scale transformative reforms in both the school and higher education sectors.

The Chief Minister said that the NEP 2020 is the first and most comprehensive Education Policy which is all-encompassing, comprehensive, and exhaustive.

Heroin seized in Cachar, two arrested

GUWAHATI, JUN 4: Cachar police on Saturday seized 143 soap cases of heroin and arrested two drug peddlers identified as Faizal Laskar and Hakimul Barbhuiya during a search operation.

Acting on a tip-off, police launched an operation at Katagashtal area on Saturday night and recovered around 2.2 kg of heroin. Meanwhile, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma via Twitter lauded the efforts of Cachar police.

The issues that required immediate attention from the state leadership are, reportedly, being sorted out gradually.

The state leadership, realizing the gravity of the situation, snapped into action and replaced many people from the plum posts who had evidently played a second fiddle in the hands of the opposition parties.

“A lot of Mandal presidents are also removed from their position for engineering the party’s defeat”, the top leader said.

Meanwhile, the BJP state BJP has also started its booth rejuvenation drive shortly after the elections as a part of the immediate rectification measures.

“Some leaders had also been issued show cause notices asking for their response as to why the party’s performance registered a significant fall. If they fail to make satisfactory responses, it may turn out to be very costly for them”, sources said adding that the booth rejuvenation drive is about to end in mid of June.

Meanwhile, a host of senior party leaders including Union Ministers and BJP National President JP Nadda are all set to make short trips to the state to oversee the organizational preparedness for the ensuing Lok Sabha elections.

“In the first phase, Central Minister Rajib Chandrasekhar and Rituraj Sinha are arriving within the next week. BJP National President JP Nadda is also set to visit the state for a couple of days in June”, sources added.

Odisha rail tragedy: Cong slams PM

DemandsRailway Min’sresignation

NEW DELHI, JUN 4 (PTI): The Congress on Sunday demanded the resignation of Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw over the Odisha rail tragedy and attacked Prime Minister Narendra Modi, saying he should accept part of the responsibility for creating an “all is well” facade even as the critical infrastructure of the Indian Railway “languishes in neglect”.

The Opposition party asked whether the prime minister will take responsibility for the “deadliest rail tragedy” of this century. It also asked who is responsible for ignoring the warnings and suggestions of experts, the parliamentary committee and CAG report.

Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge alleged that Modi was busy flagging off trains while not paying attention to railway safety.

He called for fixing accountability of all posts from top to bottom to prevent such incidents in future.

Addressing a press conference at the AICC headquarters here, Congress MP Shaktisinh Gohil and AICC’s publicity and media department head Pawan Khera alleged that the Odisha rail tragedy was a “man-made devastation caused by “utter negligence, serious lapses in the system, incompetence, and a narcissistic sense of know-it-all attitude of the Modi govern-

ment”. Khera said the prime minister has a “Kavach” which no other PM had, protecting him from public scrutiny and television debates. He urged the media to not provide that shield to the PM.

“This ‘Kavach’ does not save rail passengers but only your (PM’s) image,” Khera said.

The Opposition party also said that Modi should accept part of the responsibility for the “mess” that it alleged that his government has inflicted on the Indian

Chandrababu Naidu meets Shah, sets off buzz about alliance for polls

NEW DELHI, JUN 4 (AGENCIES): Telugu

Desam Party chief Chandrababu Naidu today met BJP president JP Nadda and Home Minister Amit Shah in Delhi to discuss an alliance ahead of the Telangana assembly election later this year and general elections next year. The meeting lasted for about half an hour.

BJP and TDP may have an alliance for the Telangana assembly elections to be held this year, sources said.

TDP was a part of NDA in 2014 but quit the ruling alliance in March 2018 before the 2019 elections on the issue of special status to Andhra Pradesh. However, both parties came together after the recent municipal elections in Port Blair.

PM Modi remembered

NT Rama Rao, TDP founder and Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh for seven years over three terms, on his birth anniversary in his radio program Mann Ki Baat last month.

Telangana unit BJP president Bandi Sanjay has dismissed as mere speculation some media

reports that BJP will have an alliance with the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) in Telangana for the coming Assembly elections. Sanjay said on Sunday told his party cadres that there was no need to pay attention to speculative stories in the media.

The speculations were triggered after TDP president and former Andhra Pradesh chief minister N. Chandrababu Naidu met Union Home Minister Amit Shah and BJP national president J.P. Nadda in Delhi.

Assembly elections in Telangana are due towards the end of 2023 while elections for the Andhra Pradesh Assembly are likely to be held along with Lok Sabha polls next year.

Railways and the people.

Prime Minister Modi, who has announced that the guilty would be punished, must first start with his railway minister, Khera said.

“Unequivocally and unambiguously, we demand the resignation of the Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw. Nothing short of it,” he said.

“Resignation means taking responsibility on moral grounds, here there is neither responsibility nor morals, do you think any resignation would come? We don’t know whom we should ask for resignation.

“The person who goes to inaugurate even small stations or the one who has been busy since yesterday morning in publicity. Modi ji, you decide whose resignation you want. But now the nation expects that you seek the resignation of your rail minister the way Lal Bahadur Shastri, Nitish Kumar and Madhavrao Scindia resigned,” Khera said.

TMC, BJP exchange barbs over Balasore train tragedy

KOLKATA, JUN 4 (PTI):

A war of words between the TMC and BJP over the triple train accident in Odisha’s Balasore intensified Sunday, with TMC reiterating its demand for the resignation of railway minister Ashwani Vaishnaw and BJP reminding the party that railway accidents had occurred during Mamata Banerjee term as railway minister.

TMC state general secretary Kunal Ghosh tweeted Sunday, that the Balasore train pile up reveals that anti-collision devices have not been fitted to trains and cannot be compared to an accident which happened during Banerjee’s watch at Rail Bhavan.

“The Balasore train accident must not be conflated with the Jnaneswari Express derailment incident – the former exposes the lack of anti-collision devices, while the latter involved Maoist activities, which, thanks to Hon’ble CM @MamataOf-

ficial’s proactive measures and strategic approach, are a thing of the past,” Ghosh tweeted.

The TMC had made the demand for Vaishnaw’s resignation on Saturday, to which an angry BJP’s Suvendu Adhikari had retorted on his twitter handle “FYI:

Pishi (Aunt) as Railway Minister after a train accident:- “Kabhi kabhi kaam karne se human error ho jata hai” (Sometimes human error occurs when people work) ... People who live in glass houses shouldn’t throw stones & here you are throwing stones from inside your glass house.”

On Saturday, West Bengal Chief Minister and TMC Chairperson Mamata Banerjee, who is a former railway minister, flew to the accident site and demanded a proper investigation.

“This is the biggest train accident of this century and a proper investigation must be conducted,” the

Trinamool Congress (TMC) chief told reporters. “Something must be behind this. The truth must come out. Why didn’t the anti-collision system work?” Banerjee had said.

The railways have said that “Kavach” - the automatic train protection system - was not available on the route where the accident occurred on Friday evening.

Meanwhile, BJP state president Sukanta Majumdar told reporters on Sunday that the enquiry into the accident would unravel the truth. “I have already spoken to the Railway minister. I think there is more than what meets the eye in the mishap. There can be an element of suspicion,” he said.

Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said on Sunday “The enquiry into the accident has been completed and as soon as the commissioner of railway safety (CRS) provides his report all the details will be known”.

Party came down heavily on Bihar CM Nitish Kumar over the bridge collapse.

BJP leader Amit Malviya asked if Nitish Kumar and Tejashwi Yadav would resign from the posts of CM and Deputy CM, respectively.

“In 2015, Nitish Ku-

mar inaugurated this bridge, which was to be completed by 2020. This bridge has fallen for the second time. Will Nitish Kumar and Tejashwi Yadav resign immediately, taking cognizance of this incident? By doing this, both the uncle and nephew can set an example in front of the country,” he said in a tweet.

Reacting to the bridge collapse, Bihar LoP Vijay Kumar Sinha slammed the Nitish Kumar-led Bihar government. He told ANI, “There’s a tradition of seeking commissions. It is a consequence of his mentality of political instability that there’s administrative anarchy and corruption. The system is collapsing but they are talking about opposition unity.”

Dichotomy of indigenous

Ex-Parliamentarians Association of Nagaland(EPAN) has joined various tribe organisations, CSOs etc to urge upon the state government to implement the recommendation of Register of Indigenous Inhabitants of Nagaland(RIIN) submitted to the government towards the end of 2019. RIIN was needed so as to implement the notification issued by the state government on December 11,2019 to implement Inner Line Permit(ILP) in Dimapur district and also districts later carved out of it such as-Chümoukedima and Niuland. Notification for extending ILP to Dimapur had been issued under section 2 of the Bengal Eastern Frontier Regulation, 1873 by the governor of Nagaland. If ILP is to be implemented it would make it mandatory for “every non-indigenous person” to obtain ILP. It was for this basis that a three-member RIIN Commission was set up to frame guidelines for eventual enactment.

RIIN commission recommended that the state government consider enactment of a legislation so as to bring the entire exercise and execution of RIIN and issuance of indigenous inhabitant certificate (IIC) and permanent resident certificate (PRC) to genuine persons, through a statutory law. Nagaland Tribes Council(NTC) had reiterated that the proposed register be generated on the basis of notification (No. AR-8/8/76) dated Kohima, April 28, 1977 with December 1, 1963 when Nagaland was formed, as a clear cut-off date for the entire state. RIIN also recommended that December 1,1963 be the cut off year to determine the status of an indigenous inhabitant of Nagaland. The commission further recommended that land laws need to be tightened as the practice of transfer of land and mutation of patta in favour of non-tribals on the basis of indigenous inhabitants certificates were detected and speak of either ignorance or land laws of the state. The commission specifically noted an instance of a chairman of a village council belonging to a tribe not indigenous to Nagaland. Therefore, it recommended that the prescribed qualification to be a member of a village council under the Nagaland Village and Tribal Councils Act 1978 be suitably amended by incorporating “indigenous inhabitant” as an additional condition. The recommendations of RIIN commission was submitted to the government by the end of December 2019 but since there has been no response. This is a strange development where a government literally is silent on the recommendations of its own panel instead of tabling it for discussion in the assembly where the contents could be debated and made known on public domain. Adding to the problem, the government instead proposed another cut of date as November 21,1979. This notification was issued to declare erstwhile Dimapur sub-division as a tribal belt. It was literally declaring a tribal belt within a tribal belt state. The state government’s stand has only added legitimate concerns as it meant having two cut off dates in one state to determine who is an indigenous inhabitant. One who does not qualify to be an indigenous inhabitant as per the December 1,1963 cut off date becomes one as per the November 21,1979 cut off date. This can only happen in Nagaland where rules are either not followed or rules that are not framed on the basis of legal and constitutional interpretations.

The Never-forsaking God

He Himself has said, “I will never leave you nor forsake you.” —Hebrews 13:5

What line of thinking do my thoughts take? Do I turn to what God says or to my own fears? Am I simply repeating what God says, or am I learning to truly hear Him and then to respond after I have heard what He says? “For He Himself has said, ‘I will never leave you nor forsake you.’ So we may boldly say: ‘The Lord is my helper; I will not fear. What can man do to me?’ ” (Hebrews 13:5-6).

“I will never leave you…”— not for any reason; not my sin, selfishness, stubbornness, nor waywardness. Have I really let God say to me that He will never leave me? If I have not truly heard this assurance of God, then let me listen again.

“I will never…forsake you.” Sometimes it is not the difficulty of life but the drudgery of it that makes me think God will forsake me. When there is no major difficulty to overcome, no vision from God, nothing wonderful or beautiful— just the everyday activities of life— do I hear God’s assurance even in these?

We have the idea that God is going to do some exceptional thing— that He is preparing and equipping us for some extraordinary work in the future. But as we grow in His grace we find that God is glorifying Himself here and now, at this very moment. If we have God’s assurance behind us, the most amazing strength becomes ours, and we learn to sing, glorifying Him even in the ordinary days and ways of life.

India’s ‘khush hua’ moment, GDP up, core in tizzy

Sudden boost to India’s GDP in the fourth quarter of the financial year made it momentously different at 6.1 percent or to 43.6 lakh crore, outpacing projections. It also pushed up the 202223 yearly growth to 7.2 percent or Rs 160.06 lakh crore making it a standout performance adding glitter to the Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s nine years of celebration to a real “khush hua” moment.

The RBI had earlier projected the growth at 6.8 percent.

It is a level higher than the RBI and private projections. Agriculture was a surprise in the January-March rabi months growing 5.5 percent, and construction surged to 10.4 percent or Rs 3.9 lakh crore. India shines at a time when most major economies are struggling. India defies global factors, particularly Europe and the US that are bogged down by the Ukraine war and difficult finanes.

It is not true that India is not hit by the US sanctions but that is another story. The important factor for India is trying to make a mark. On the production side, finance, real estate

and professional services in the last quarter grew by 7.1 percent to Rs 7.6 lakh crore. It is a wonder. Has the fourth quarter done so significant difference that one tends to believe the last few years of low growth phase is passe now! The figures look good also for the reason that two years back growth reached a nadir in terms of minus figures. Indians can make the difference and possibly the dream of being an engine of world growth once again looks not distant.

However, an expenditure side analysis shows that two key drivers of growth, consumption and investment seem to be in different directions. The private final consumption expenditure (PFCE) growth slowed down significantly over the course of the year. In the fourth quarter it grew by 2.8 percent to Rs 23.9 lakh crore.

It’s the second successive time it has grown less than 3 percent. There is a distribution challenge. It has a link with the fall in quality of jobs. The women are sufferers as figures show growth in the number of unpaid helpers. Another aspect adds to the concern. Overall key

infra sector growth slows to six-month low of 3.5 percent in April. It may not all be so bright as it appears. It is due to decline in the output of crude oil, natural gas, refinery products, coal and electricity.

The core sector grew by 9.5 percent in April 2022 while in March 2023 it fell to 3.6 percent. It is the lowest at 0.7 percent since October 2022 when the sectors expanded by 9.7 percent. Even coal production declined to 9 percent. Fertiliser production rises by 23.5 percent, steel by 12.1 percent and cement by 11.6 percent. The fall in coal and electricity production speak volumes about industrial activity.

trend. This is a key indicator of the overall well-being of the people.

The private consumption is showing an impact on manufacturing. Its gross value addition saw a contraction in three quarters.

The gross fixed capital growth (GFCF) expenditure continues to show robust trend. Part of it is on account of government push towards capex as capital expenditure increased by 24 percent between 2021-2023. But it is not reflecting in private consumption. Capex often get into demolitions too negating the impact to some extent. The RBI Consumer Confidence Surveys continue to show a negative

Overall rise over the year is1.3 percent. Even the March 2022 figures grew by 0.6 percent. The present growth has little to rave about. The manufacturing sector not doing well may have anent effect in the future results. It is not showing the momentum seen in the Purchasing Manager’s Index (PMI). This holds the threat of undermining one of the most encouraging aspects of the GDP data, the surge of investments. Capital formation grew by 8.9 percent in the last quarter to Rs 15.3 lakh crore and was 35.3 percent of the GDP, the highest since the pandemic. But private investment within the country and outside had not been robust possible because low consumption factor. Despite facing challenges from an uninspiring global outlook, India’s growth momentum is likely to be sustained in 2023-

24 amid easing inflationary pressures, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) said in its annual report for 2022-23.

For 2023-24, real GDP growth is projected at 6.5 per cent with risks evenly balanced. The economy is expected to expand at 7 per cent in 2023.

Chief Economic Advisor V Anantha Nageswaram expressed happiness at the trend. He says that the services sector has maintained its growth marks. He says much of the elasticity is coming from construction activities. This is the catch as well. It indicates that many other sectors may not be doing as well as they are expected.

The government has been able to meet its fiscal deficit at 6.4 percent, much higher than RBI tolerance limit, though it is in line with the revised budgetary estimates of 2023-24. The inflation rate fell to 4.7 percent in April.

It says the deficit in absolute terms is Rs 17.3 lakh crore against Rs 17.5 lakh crore in the previous year. There is one catch. This figure is above a very high inflationary trend. It means that overall performance of

the economy in real terms might be less than what is being claimed. If it moves as expected fiscal deficit target could come down to 5.9 percent.

Morgan Stanley says that India has transformed in a decade and gained positions in the world order. However, it says that there is scepticism with overseas investors, “who say India has not delivered its potential despite it being the second fastest growing economy”.

The report highlights ten big changes. These include supply-side policy reforms, formalisation of the economy, real estate regulation and development law, digitalising social transfers, insolvency and bankruptcy code, flexible inflation targeting, focus on FDI, government support for corporate profits and MNC sentiments at all-time high.

In the light of this industry has pinned high hopes on RBI. It remains to be seen how RBI acts at the Monetary Policy Committee meeting on June 6. It is a tussle. Industry wants low rates and depositors an increase. So would RBI be a hawk or a dove? Nation keenly awaits the moves.

Role of churches in minimizing environmental degradation

With the rise in temperature we all felt that there should be something that needs to be done for our ecology but the platforms are less. At this juncture the church can play an important role for the betterment of our ecology. So far the church has been silent on the environmental issues and only very recently Christians have become more aware of these problems. The church should speak out against environmental degradation/ abuses and also reach out to those who have become victims of environmental disasters. So far Christians were hesitant to speak out the issues concerning the environment and have not been considered ‘spiritual’. The church should create awareness that whatever it does today affects the future generations. Therefore, the churches need to think in terms of long term planning. The churches should also be agents of change in greening our planet and bringing about attitude change towards nature and nature consciousness.

Today the role of the church needs to have a cosmic concern rather than a narrow anthropological concern and its action should bringing eco-justice that need to be an integral part of its missiological enterprise. The inter-dependence between creation and the church attains special significance in Christ. But we have to begin with God as the creator to know of the creation. So also the theory of evolution to substitute the Genesis story of creation has no meaning for us for it leaves God out of the picture and does not begin with God.

The church today need to correct the Biblical passages that have been misinterpreted in many ways. Biblical terminologies like, “dominion” and “subdue” have been misinterpreted to use the power and authority upon the entire created order and often identified human as the matter over the nature and these understandings result in ecological crisis. Due to the lack of ecological awareness in the church human exploited Gods given natural resources. So

also taking care of God’s creation does not mean to use everything because in the Bible it is not said to overuse. Therefore Creation need to be looked through the perspective of God the creator. God does not want his creation to be deteriorated. Creation reflects the gorgeousness of unseen hands of the creator.

Throughout the history of human beings there is an inseparable relationship between human beings with the nature. This communion with the nature demands ecological developments. It changes one’s attitudes from plundering, robbing and exploiting to a preserving, cherishing and protecting attitudes in human‘s heart. Oliver Inchody said that, Human’s attitude towards nature must neither be of subjugation nor of dominion and exploitation, but one of “harmony.” A sense of harmony, i.e. a fellowship feeling which is to manifest itself in terms of “karuna” (charity), “maitri” (active good doing), and “daya” (compassion) towards all beings.

Since creation implies God’s authority and possession over the world. Human beings are part of that creation, with special functions within it. The doctrine of creation leads to the idea of human stewardship of the creation, which is to be contrasted with a secular notion of human ownership of the world. The creation is not ours; we hold it in trust for God. We are meant to be the stewards of God’s creation and are responsible for the manner in which we exercise that stewardship. This insight is of major importance in relation to ecological and environmental concerns, in that it provides a proper foundation for the exercise of human responsibility toward the planet. This has important consequences for our everyday behavior. We have been placed within God’s creation to tend it and take care of it (Gen. 2: 15), as we do in gardening, craftsmanship and town planning. We may be superior to the rest of the creation and exercise authority over it (Ps. 8: 4-8), but we remain under

the authority of God and so are responsible to the creator for the way we treat the creation.

A careful look at the Bible will reveal that ecological and environmental concerns are very much central to its message. The Word of God starts with the glorious account of God’s creation. God promised the best of created things to the people he made to be his own. Also the institution of Sabbath and Jubilee shows that God has a concern for the ecology. It is during this period where the land kept rest from cultivation. The prophets looked forward to a renew creation. Jesus displayed a very positive attitude to all that was around him. Paul spoke about creation groaning for redemption, just as much as human beings groan for theirs. The final book, Revelation, concludes with a glowing description of the new heavens and the new earth, a glorious continuity of what God has already done for the world. Now there is a growing realization that past generation have seriously abused the creation and its resources. There is a real danger that we will spoil what God so wonderfully created. Reflecting on our responsibilities as stewards of God’s creation is the first step in undoing the harm done by the past generation. It matters much that vast areas of our world have been made uninhabitable through nuclear and toxic chemical waste. The delicate balance of natural forces is disturbed by human carelessness. Sin affects the way we treat the environment as much as it does to our attitude toward God, other people and society as a whole. The urgent need of the churches today is to Developing an eco-spirituality among its members to develop an integrity concerning God’s gift for humans. Eco-spirituality starts with the interconnectedness of humankind and nature. Eco spirituality here means a peaceful coexistence with all life which in other words means living a harmonious living among whole creation, acknowledging and accepting the interdependentness

and interrelatedness of all, doing away with all oppressive structures and elements that disrupts the God-humans-nature relationships. Church should have a concern towards the prevalent ecological crisis. The church cannot get rid of this obligation because the church is the steward of the nature. The first obligation of the church is to follow human beings. This includes both the born and the unborn. Secondly the obligation is to the environment. The church is responsible towards the environment much more than anybody else in the world. Emmanuel E. James rightly tells that, Ecological duties indicate that church should not do things which are harmful or dangerous to others. Our polluting the environment may cause sickness or even death to others. It may also cause damage to life and property. We must remember that we are the stewards of God’s creation. We are not the masters or owners of God’s creation. The realization will help us to be careful about obligations as stewardship of the earth. Man must respect, preserve and protect God’s creation and make the right use of it for his needs.

Today human beings have become the victims due to the effects of ecosystem. Therefore, church is ethically responsible for the physical environment in which human beings live and they are striving against the dangerous ecological situation to maintain the integrity and quality of God’s creation. The church mission should also have understanding on the cosmic concern. The eco problem is definitely a problem of social eco justice issue. If human beings need justice from exploitation, surely natural environment also need justice of right to live and exist. Christian can’t do justice to human beings alone without considering justice to the nature. The churches need to have an eco awareness seminar for the leaders. The lack of understanding of stewardship need to be talked in the church as human uses excess liberty to exploit our environment.

The churches should

teach the basic principles of wastes handling, disposal and recycling, efficient use of energy, family planning and personal hygiene and scientific methods in agriculture and pest control. The churches for the ecological balance need to emphasize through preaching in the church. As government emphasis on plantation of trees 1/2 or 2/4 or 1/10 the church need to work on it. The church can also play an important part in encouraging people to plant trees as well as protect existing forests. Environment awareness camps, cleanliness drives, seminars, adoption of villages by different groups are some of the way of fostering proper environmental consciousness. Churches can also adopt a village and help the natives to practice scientific soil/water management, conserve grasslands, wetlands and forest, etc. thus; we can save villages from desertification and famine. Churches may promote agriculture projects in the co-operative sector that enables the poor farmers to get maximum economic benefit. For example, co-operatives that collect milk, dairy and poultry products, honey, spices and medicinal herbs could result in tremendous economic development that is otherwise not possible. Churches must exert positive influence on civic bodies and other decision-

making bodies of human environment.

The crisis we face is to do with the overuse, or even misuse of our resources. We believe in a God who created heaven and earth and accept that this same God has entrusted us with the management and care of his creation. Hence, we will need to demonstrate a greater sense of responsibility. It is important that we take the role of steward seriously. We are not only accountable to God, as stewards of His creation, but also hold a responsibility towards our fellow human beings. But unfortunately, rather than using and managing the resources of our environment wisely, we have carelessly squandered them, taking it for granted that they will be endlessly available for our selfish consumption. I would like to end with what K.C. Abraham said. He said that there are the three dimensions of mission which he said should be integrally related to each other: Proclamation of the Gospel - evangelism that is aimed at calling people to personal loyalty to God. Social mission: that means struggling for the renewal of society through justice struggles. The renewal of creation, to be worked out by promoting ecologically related concerns.

Let’s save our environment

What are we doing to make Dimapur cleaner?

Sir, When other towns and cities are tackling pollution on a war footing, garbage in Dimapur continues to be an eyesore. In a survey few years ago, Dimapur featured as one of the dirtiest towns in India. While the rural areas are comparatively cleaner, it is the cities that are worrisome. A lot has to done in terms of garbage disposal and collection. For starters, we have very less dustbins in Dimapur. Put our more dustbins where there are more chances of littering. Secondly, business owners should be heavily fined if they don’t keep their surroundings clean. It is the commercial areas that are the dirtiest. If the business owners earn in the city, they are obliged to keep it clean too. Thirdly, the village councils and gaon burah should identify areas that are dirty and liase with the relevant authorities. I hope the authorities act fast because we love our state. Aren Longchar, Dimapur.

Man caught stealing

Metro goods in Delhi

NEW DELHI, JUN 4

(IANS): A man, who stole Delhi Metro goods (iron pipes) kept on Mehrauli Badarpur road, was caught by a security manager on Sunday morning, an official said. The accused was identified as Neeraj (33), a resident of Tigri Extension, while the associate managed to flee away from the spot. According to police, a police control room call was received on Sunday around 10.43 a.m. that two persons were caught with stolen iron pipes on Mehrauli-Badarpur Road near RPS Colony MB Road following which a police team was dispatched to the spot.

While making video reels on a goods train, a minor boy from Bihar’s Sitamarhi district came in contact with the high tension overhead electric wire and sustained serious burn injuries, an official of the GRP said. The victim was identified as Mohammad Riaz, a native of Mensol locality in Sitamarhi district, and the incident happened on Saturday. He was on his way to school in the morning hours with his friends. A statement to GRP said, “A group of students were on the way to school and one of them climbed on the goods train and started making reels. He came in contact with the wire and sustained burn injuries.

4 men drown while bathing in Yamuna

AGRA, JUN 4 (PTI):

Four men drowned while bathing in the Yamuna River near Hathi Ghat here, police said on Sunday. On Saturday, Tushar, Sonu, Sachin and Ritik, all residents of Naulakha in Sadar Bazar, went to Tajganj crematorium to attend the last rite of a neighbour, Raj Kumar Singh incharge at Itmadud-daulah Police Station said. After performing puja at Hathi Ghat, the four friends, aged between 20-22 years, went to the river to bathe and drowned after slipping into the deep water, he said. Two others who jumped into the river to save their friends also began drowning, but were saved by the people who were present at the ghat.

People of India are going to defeat BJP: Rahul

NEW YORK, JUN 4 (PTI): Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has said after the Karnataka election victory his party will “decimate” the BJP in Telangana and other state polls, emphasising that it is not just the Congress party but the people of India who are going to defeat its hate-filled ideology.

Gandhi arrived in New York after visiting Washington and San Francisco and will address a community rally at the Javits Centre in Manhattan on Sunday.

“We have shown in Karnataka that we can decimate the BJP…We did not defeat them, we decimated them. We smashed them in Karnataka,” Gandhi said at a dinner event organised here on Saturday by the Indian Overseas CongressUSA.

He said in the Karnataka elections, the BJP “tried everything in the book, they had the entire media, they had 10 times the amount

of money we had, they had the government, they had the agency. They had everything and then we decimated them,” Gandhi said.

“And I want you to know that we are going to decimate them in Telangana next,” he said to loud cheers and applause from the gathering.

“It will be hard to find the BJP in Telangana after this election.” Election in the southern Indian state is scheduled to be held later this year. Congress supporters, officials, party members and members of the diaspora gathered in large

numbers at the community event that was also attended by New York City Mayor Eric Adams.

Apart from the Telangana election, there are elections scheduled for “Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh where we will do the same we did to them in Karnataka,” Gandhi said to cheers and applause from the supporters.

“It is not just the Congress party that is going to defeat the BJP. It is the people of India, the people of Madhya Pradesh, the people of Telangana, the people of Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh who are going to defeat the BJP,” Gandhi said.

He added that the reason for this is that “India has understood that it cannot go forward with the type of hatred that the BJP is spreading in society.”

“That is what is going to happen in the next few states. And then after that in 2024 we will do the same…

The opposition is united, we are all working together. It is an ideological battle. On one side, there is a divisive ideology of the BJP, the hate-filled ideology of the BJP. On the other side, there is the affectionate, loving ideology of the Congress party,” he said. He said in Karnataka, the BJP tried to polarise the election and create anger and hatred between communities. “Prime Minister himself tried it. Did it work?” Gandhi asked the audience and they replied, “No”.

Gandhi said the people of Karnataka declared that the election is about prices, unemployment and corruption.

Gandhi referred to his slogan made during the Bharat Jodo Yatra, during which he had said “Nafrat ke bazaar mein mohabbat ki dukan kholenge.”

Adams said the “New Delhi of America is right here in New York City.”

There are things ‘bigger than politics’ when you go abroad: S Jaishankar

CAPE TOWN, JUN 4

(PTI): There are sometimes “things bigger than politics” when one steps outside the country, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar said on Saturday, days after Congress leader Rahul Gandhi repeatedly attacked Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his government during his ongoing US visit.

Addressing Indian Americans in Santa Clara in the US earlier this week, Rahul Gandhi, a former Congress party president and an ex-MP, described Prime Minister Modi as a “specimen” and also attacked his government’s policies on various fronts. Speaking at an event in Cape Town after attending the meeting of

BRICS foreign ministers, S Jaishankar said that he can talk for himself and does not do politics while travelling abroad.

“Look, I said I can only talk for myself I try when I go abroad not to do politics.”

“I’m perfectly prepared to argue and argue very vigorously at home. Okay, so you will never find me wanting in that regard,” he said in

response to a question. “But I think you know, even a democratic culture has a certain collective responsibility. There is a national interest there is a collective image. There are sometimes things bigger than politics and when you step outside the country, I think that’s important to remember.

“So I might differ strongly with someone. I could say to you, I differ with them. But how I counter it, I would like to go back home and do it. And watch me when I get back,” India’s top diplomat said. S Jaishankar said one part of the Indian foreign policy today is extremely focused securing the welfare of Indian citizens abroad.

Temples in Uttarakhand enforce dress code

HARIDWAR (U’KHAND), JUN 4 (PTI): Temple authorities in Uttarakhand’s Haridwar, Rishikesh and Dehradun districts have imposed a ban on the entry of devotees not wearing appropriate clothing.

Mahant Ravindra Puri, secretary of the Mahanirvani Panchayati Akhara, on Sunday said a formal ban has been imposed on the entry of “scantily-clad men and women” into the Daksh Prajapati Mandir (Haridwar), Tapkeshwar Mahadev Mandir (Dehradun) and the Neelkanth Mahadev Mandir (Rishikesh).

“Only women who have their bodies covered up to 80 per cent can enter these temples,” Puri, who is also president of the Akhil Bharatiya Akhara Parishad, said. The ban comes into effect immediately at these temples affiliated to the Mahanirvani Panchayati Akhara, he said.

Mahanirvani Panchayati Akhara consists of the Dashnam Naga seers.

Puri said the ban will soon be extended to akharaaffiliated temples across the country. Asked about the necessity to impose the ban, Puri said, “Sometimes peo-

ple entering the temples are so skimpily dressed that one feels ashamed to even look at them.”

“The Daksheshwar Mahadev Mandir -- also known as the Daksh Prajapati Mandir -- at Kankhal in Haridwar is considered the home of Lord Shiva’s in-laws. People from all over the world visit the temple.

“Every Monday, the temple receives a stream of devotees. Today’s youths come to the temple wearing clothes that reflect their total disregard for its sanctity,” Puri said. He further said that these clothing “hurts the religious sentiments of the devout” who often come to the temple committee to lodge complaints.

The ban follows repeated complaints, he said, and warned that those who violate the ban will be dealt with sternly.

The imposition of the ban has also found support among seers in Haridwar.

“The sanctity of the temples must be maintained and people inside their precincts should conduct themselves accordingly. The ban is in accordance with Sanatan Dharma,” Katha Vyas (professional narrator of mythological stories) Madhusudan Shastri said.

NEW DELHI, JUN 4 (IANS): The autopsy report of the 16-year-old Sakshi, who was stabbed 34 times, kicked multiple times, and struck with a cemented stone six times by Mohammad Sahil Khan here in the Shahbad Dairy area on May 28, revealed that her skull was broken into pieces and due to multiple stabbing by knife, her intestines also came out of the body, a source said on Sunday.

According to sources, there were 16 deep wounds in Sakshi’s body, with excessive bleeding leading to her death. “A total of 11

wounds were detected on her vital organs and that caused her death. Her left lung was punctured due to stabbing and her intestines were protruding from the body. There was a deep

RBI likely to maintain pause on interest rate

NEW

DELHI, JUN 4

(PTI): The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) will maintain the policy repo rate at 6.5 per cent during its upcoming June 8 announcement, considering the easing of retail inflation in April and the potential for further decline, indicating the effectiveness of previous policy rate actions, anticipate experts.

Headed by Reserve Bank Governor Shaktikanta Das, a meeting of the six-member Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) is scheduled for June 6-8. The decision of the 43rd meeting of the MPC would be announced on Thursday, June 8.

After the last MPC meeting in April, the RBI paused its rate hike cycle and stayed with the 6.5 per cent repo rate. Prior to that the central bank had cumulatively hiked the repo rate by 250 basis points since May 2022 in a bid to contain inflation.

The MPC is meeting in the backdrop of consumer price-based (CPI) inflation declining to an 18-month low of 4.7 per cent in April. The Reserve Bank governor recently in-

dicated that the May print would be lower than the April numbers. The CPI for May is scheduled to be announced on June 12.

Madan Sabnavis, Chief Economist, Bank of Baroda, said the RBI is most likely to continue to pause on the interest rates and retain repo rate at 6.5 per cent.

“The reason is that inflation has come in lower than 5 per cent in April and will be even lower in May. This being the case, the view would be that past repo rate actions have had an effect on inflation and hence there can be another pause taken,” he said.

The policy stance, he added, will however remain with withdrawal of accommodation since there has already been an increase in liquidity as deposits increase due to the announcement of the exchange of the Rs 2,000 notes.

The RBI will also be monitoring the progress of the monsoon and the possible ill effects of El Nino which can affect the kharif harvest and hence impact prices, experts said.

“For the year, however, we see 25-50 bps cut

in repo rate which will be post October only,” Sabnavis said.

The government has mandated the RBI to ensure CPI inflation at 4 per cent with a margin of 2 per cent on either side.

Bankers too expect that the central bank will continue its pause in the forthcoming policy.

“As far as bankers are concerned I would only say that RBI’s repo rate has already been increased 2.5 per cent. Expectations from the market or the banking side is that we do not expect that any rise in the repo rate would be there because already the interest rate has been raised by 2.5 per cent on the repo side and inflation is moderate,”

Rajneesh Karnatak, Managing Director, Bank of India, told PTI.

He said the inflation is also moderate. “If you see the data of wholesale inflation and retail inflation, it is now moderate. I think there will be a pause from RBI and there will not be any increase in the repo rate,” Karnatak said.

Echoing his views, Bank of Maharashtra executive director Asheesh

Pandey said RBI would continue its stance of wait and watch before tinkering with rate. Keeping inflation, liquidity in the banking system and recent GDP number into consideration, it seems that RBI is likely to maintain pause as far as interest rate is concerned, Pandey added. The actual decisions made by the RBI, experts said, will depend on various factors, including economic data, inflation trends, global economic conditions, and the prevailing challenges.

President of PHD Chamber of Commerce and Industry Saket Dalmia said that at this juncture, status quo by RBI will support the demand trajectory in the country and maintain GDP growth on high road.

“We congratulate the RBI that the effectiveness of policy rates have proven strong with an increase of 250 bps in repo rate, inflation has come down by 310 bps. The ERPR (Effectiveness Ratio of Policy Rate), the ratio of increase in repo rate and decrease in inflation is 1.24; means with an increase of 1 basis point in repo rate, the country was

able to reduce inflation by 1.24 basis points,” he said.

On his expectations from the RBI, Ramnath Krishnan, Managing Director & Group CEO, Icra, said inflation readings have eased, suggesting that April’s surprise pause is likely to be extended further in June 2023.

“Growth surprised on the upside as well, ruling out early rate cuts. The market will keenly await cues on liquidity management from the RBI, including the impact that is foreseen from the Rs 2,000 notes coming back into the banking system,” he said.

The other members of the MPC are: Shashanka Bhide (Honorary Senior Advisor, National Council of Applied Economic Research, Delhi); Ashima Goyal (Emeritus Professor, Indira Gandhi Institute of Development Research, Mumbai); Jayanth R Varma (Professor, Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad); Rajiv Ranjan (Executive Director, RBI); and Michael Debabrata Patra (Deputy Governor, RBI). The meeting is chaired by RBI Governor Shaktikanta Das.

Subsequent proposals for undertaking activities regarding oil and gas in Nagaland have hit a wall as various tribe organizations and CSOs cite Article 371(A) especially with regard to Clause (a)(iv) pertaining to ownership and transfer of land and its resources.

According to senior official under the petroleum ministry, oil exploration does not mean taking transferring the oil bearing area or taking(extraction) of oil.

Instead, awarding PEL to OIL will bring direct and immediate benefits to hundreds of local people where survey(exploration) would be conducted and this could go on for ten to fifteen years involving thousand crore rupees but during which no oil will be drilled nor extracted.

Nagaland sits on the prolific Assam-Arakan (AA) Basin within the Naga-Schuppen Oil Belt which is considered a main source for feeding the oil and gas fields in Assam and Arunachal Pradesh.

Nagaland has an estimated potential of 600 million tonnes of crude oil reserves.

NEW DELHI, JUN 4 (AGENCIES): Tata Motors is working on several CNG and electric cars even as the automaker expects the passenger vehicle industry growth to moderate to 5-7 per cent in the current financial year as compared with 27 per cent sales growth in the last financial year with dip in pent-up demand.

“There’s going to be a steep increase in the EV volumes. We are expanding our portfolio in the CNG segment, so I think we have several levers, which are going to increase our volumes, as well as market share,” Managing Director, Passenger Vehicle and Electric Vehicles at Tata Motors, Shailesh Chandra said during an analyst call, Economic Times reported.

Outlining the company’s product related plans, Chandra said it would keep the excitement up with new interventions in existing brands and new product introductions.

“We are going to bring a CNG variant (of Punch) with the twin cylinder technology and this is going to be unique in the market... We are also planning to bring EVs, so we are very confident that these two products will be able to sustain the volumes,” he noted. The company is also going to add new nameplates.

“We have showcased that in Auto expo, Curvv, Sierra, these are new nameplates, which are going to get launched,” Chandra added.

(PTI): From planting saplings to development of eco-parks, state-owned coal companies are taking various measures to reclaim abandoned mines, infusing multi-core investments, coal and mines minister Pralhad Joshi said.

Other initiatives of the ministry include adoption of modern technologies like gasification of coal, installation of renewable energy projects, conservation of water bodies etc, the minister told PTI in an interview.

“Our Prime Minister (Narendra Modi) has set a vision to make India net zero by 2070. In line with his

vision, our PSUs are taking various efforts to make the coal mining a sustainable exercise. We are doing our bit for climate change issue. They are spending thousands of crores to meet this goal,” he said ahead of the World Environment Day on June 5. Coal India Ltd (CIL) along with with its eight subsidiary companies and NLC India Ltd function under the administrative control of the coal ministry.

Joshi, who is also the minister for parliamentary affairs, added that “from 2014-15 to 2022-23, we have increased the green cover over 16,262 hectares of land, planting about 37.03 mil -

lion saplings”. Public sector units have drawn a plan to develop a green cover area of 2,500 hectares (ha) planting 50 lakh saplings in the ongoing 2023-24 fiscal, taking the total count to over 42 million trees.

He further said that around 30 eco-parks have been developed on barren lands near mineral-less mines across the country and another 30 new ecoparks will be developed in next 3-4 years in the coal bearing states like West Bengal, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh and Odisha with the total estimated cost of around Rs 200 crore.

CIES): Shares of Hero MotoCorp (HMCL) surged 4 per cent to Rs 2,911.65 on the BSE in Friday’s intra-day trade after the market leader reported volume growth of 31.1 per cent month-onmonth (MoM) at 519,474 units in the month of May 2023. According to Business Standard, the company reported a growth of 7 per cent over the corresponding month of May 2022, when the company had sold 486,704 units. The stock of two-wheelers company was trading close to its 52-week high of Rs 2,939.35, touched on August 18, 2022. In past one month, the stock has rallied 16 per cent, as compared

to 2.1 per cent rise in the S&P BSE Sensex. According to ICICI Securities, in the 2-wheeler space volume prints were in line with their expectation tracking healthy retails, with HMCL surprising positively with double digit growth and reaching new highs in recent past.

HMCL said the momentum is expected to continue in the coming months, driven by an uptick in customer sentiments, forecast of normal monsoon and a host of new launches in the premium segment. NEW DELHI, JUN 4

(PTI): The government is looking to sell a part of its residual 49 per cent stake in Balco through a public offer and is engaging with the firm’s promoter Vedanta to withdraw arbitration and facilitate stock exchanges listing of the company, DIPAM Secretary Tuhin Kanta Pandey said.

The Ministry of Mines and the Department of Investment and Public Asset Management (DIPAM) have held ‘preliminary talks’ with Vedanta Ltd -- the promoters of erstwhile public sector company BALCO, he said.

BALCO has to withdraw a 2009 arbitration case it filed against the government over valuation dispute of the residual stake. “We have talked (with BALCO promoters) at preliminary level. We will

engage with them in detail. If we have to do public listing, they (Vedanta) will have to withdraw the case. If they agree then we can move forward,” Pandey told PTI.

The government wants to sell part of its 49 per cent stake in BALCO in the initial public offering (IPO) before eventually exiting the company. A stock exchange listing would give an idea on the fair valuation of BALCO.

The government had in 2001 sold 51 per cent stake in the then state-owned Bharat Aluminium Company Ltd (BALCO) to Sterlite Industries Ltd, a subsidiary of Vedanta Ltd, for Rs 551 crore.

The remaining 49 per cent is with the government of India. The deal had a call option in the shareholder agreement which allowed Sterlite Industries to acquire residual

49 per cent stake from the government by March 2004.

When Sterlite offered Rs 1,099 crore in 2004 for buying the residual stake, the government rejected it as a Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) report had said that BALCO valuation should be higher.

The BALCO arbitration story is the same as that of Hindustan Zinc (HZL) in which Vedanta had initiated arbitration against the government in 2009, but the Supreme Court in November 2021 allowed the government to proceed with open market sale of its 29.5 per cent in the zinc company, instead of selling the stake to the promoters of the company.

China-US war would be ‘unbearable disaster for

SINGAPORE, JUN 4 (AP): China’s defence minister defended sailing a warship across the path of an American destroyer and Canadian frigate transiting the Taiwan Strait, telling a gathering of some of the world’s top defence officials in Singapore on Sunday that such so-called “freedom of navigation” patrols are a provocation to China. In his first international public address since becoming defence minister in March, Gen.

Li Shangfu told the Shangri-La Dialogue that China doesn’t have any problems with “innocent passage” but that “we must prevent attempts that try to use those freedom of navigation (patrols), that innocent passage, to exercise hegemony of navigation.”

US Defence Secretary Lloyd Austin told the same forum Saturday that Washington would not “flinch in the face of bullying or coer-

Additionally, the US has said a Chinese J-16 fighter jet late last month “performed an unnecessarily aggressive maneuver” while intercepting a US Air Force reconnaissance aircraft over the South China Sea, flying directly in front of the plane’s nose.

Those and previous incidents have raised concerns of a possible accident occurring that could lead to an escalation between the two nations at a time when tensions are already high.

Li suggested the US and its allies had created the danger, and should instead should focus on taking “good care of your own territorial airspace and waters.”

Ukrainian president says at least 500 children killed by war

KYIV, JUN 4 (AP): Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said on Sunday that Russia’s war, now in its 16th month, has killed at least 500 Ukrainian children.

Zelenskyy provided the number hours after rescue workers found the body of a 2-year-old girl who died in one of the latest Russian strikes.

The president said in a statement that “Russian weapons and hatred, which continue to take and destroy the lives of Ukrainian children every day”, killed the hundreds who had perished since Russia’s fullscale invasion of Ukraine started on February 24, 2022. “Many of them

could have become famous scholars, artists, sports champions, contributing to Ukraine’s history,” he said.

Zelenskyy said it was impossible to establish the exact number of children who were casualties due to the ongoing hostilities and because some areas are under Russian occupation. “We must hold out and win this war!” the Ukrainian president said.

“All of Ukraine, all our people, all our children, must be free from the Russian terror!” Rescuers found the 2-year-old’s body early Sunday while combing through the rubble of an apartment building in the suburbs of the central city of Dnipro.

The regional governor, Serhiy Lysak, said five children were among 22 people injured by Saturday’s attack, which damaged two residential buildings.

The Russians launched more strikes with drones and cruise missiles on Sunday, targeting multiple areas of the country, including the capital, Kyiv.

Ukraine keeps up pressure on Russian forces

BAKHMUT, JUN 4 (AP):

Watching imagery from a drone camera overhead, Ukrainian battalion commander Oleg Shiryaev warned his men in nearby trenches that Russian forces were advancing across a field toward a patch of trees outside the city of Bakhmut.

The leader of the 228th Battalion of the 127th Kharkiv Territorial Defense Brigade then ordered a mortar team to get ready. A target was locked. A mortar tube popped out a loud orange blast, and an explosion cut a new crater in an already pockmarked hillside.

“We are moving forward,” Shiryaev said after at least one drone image showed a Russian fighter struck down. “We fight for every tree, every trench, ev-

Kim Yo Jong slams UN meet; vows

2nd attempt to launch

SEOUL, JUN 4 (AP): The influential sister of North Korean leader Kim Jong

Un vowed again Sunday to push for a second attempt to launch a spy satellite as she lambasted a U.N. Security Council meeting over the North’s first, failed launch.

The North’s attempt to put its first military spy satellite into orbit last Wednesday failed as its rocket crashed off the Korean Peninsula’s western coast. An emergency meeting of the U.N. Security Council was still convened at the request of the U.S., Japan and other countries to discuss the launch because it had violated council resolutions banning the North from performing any launch using ballistic technology.

On Sunday, Kim’s sister and senior ruling party

spy satellite

official, Kim Yo Jong, called the U.N. council “a political appendage” of the United States, saying its recent meeting was convened following America’s “gangster-like request.”

She accused the U.N. council of being “discriminative and rude” because it only takes issue with the North’s satellite launches while thousands of satellites launched by other countries are already operating in space.

treating. Instead, they are keeping up the pressure and continuing the fight from positions on the western fringes of Bakhmut.

Ukrainian Deputy Defense Minister Hanna Maliar said Russia sought to create the impression of

the countries, especially the naval vessels and fighter jets of countries, not to do closing actions around other countries’ territories,” he said through an interpreter. “What’s the point of going there? In China we always say, Mind your own business.’”

In a wide-ranging speech, Li reiterated many of Beijing’s well-known positions, including its claim on Taiwan, calling it “the core of our core interests.”

He accused the US and others of “meddling in China’s internal affairs” by providing Taiwan with defence support and training, and conducting high-level diplomatic visits.

“China stays committed to the path of peaceful development, but we will never hesitate to defend our legitimate rights and interests, let alone sacrifice the nation’s core interests,” he said.

Jens Stoltenberg made no breakthrough on Sunday in talks about Sweden’s membership in the military organisation with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, with officials from the two countries to meet in just over a week to try to bridge their differences.

NATO wants to bring Sweden into the fold by the time U.S. President Joe Biden and other allied leaders meet in Lithuania on July 11-12, but Turkiye and Hungary have yet to endorse the move. All 31 member countries must ratify a candidate’s accession protocol for it to join the trans-Atlantic alliance.

Turkiye’s government accuses Sweden of being too lenient on terror organisations and security threats, including militant Kurdish groups and people associated with a 2016 coup attempt. Hungary has also delayed its approval, but the reasons why haven’t been

made publicly clear.

“President Erdogan and I agreed today that the permanent joint mechanism should meet again in the week starting on June 12.

Membership will make Sweden safer, but also NATO and Turkiye stronger,” Stoltenberg told reporters in Istanbul.

The permanent joint mechanism was set up to address Turkiye’s concerns about Sweden and Finland, the latter of which became the 31st member of NATO in April.

“Sweden has fulfilled its obligations,” for membership, Stoltenberg said. He noted that the country has amended its constitution, strengthened its anti-terror

laws, and lifted an arms embargo on Turkiye since it applied to join NATO just over a year ago.

Fearing they might be targeted by Moscow after Russia invaded Ukraine last year, Sweden and Finland abandoned their traditional positions of military nonalignment to seek protection under NATO’s security umbrella. As Stoltenberg held talks in Istanbul, hundreds of people, including dozens of pro-Kurdish protesters, gathered in Stockholm to demonstrate against Sweden’s planned NATO membership. Up to 500 people took part in the action titled “No to NATO — no Erdogan Laws in Sweden.”

They rallied under the banner of the “Alliance Against NATO,” an umbrella for a mix of Kurdish organisations, leftist groups, anarchists, youth and climate activists and people opposed to Sweden’s new anti-terror laws, which took effect on June 1, as well as those calling for free media.

US, Saudi Arabia urge Sudan’s warring parties to agree to a new cease-fire

CAIRO, JUN 4 (AP): Sau-

di Arabia and the United States urged Sudan’s warring parties on Sunday to agree to and “effectively implement” a new ceasefire as fighting showed no signs of abating in the northeastern African nation.

Sudan descended into chaos after fighting broke out in mid-April between the military, led by Gen. Abdel-Fattah Burhan, and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces, commanded by Gen. Mohammed Hamdan Dagalo.

For weeks, Saudi Arabia and the United States have been mediating between the warring parties.

calm around Bakhmut, but in fact, artillery shelling still goes on at levels similar to those at the height of the battle to take the city. The fight, she said, is evolving into a new phase.

“The battle for the Bakhmut area hasn’t stopped; it is ongoing, just taking different forms,” said Maliar, dressed in her characteristic fatigues in an interview from a military media center in Kyiv. Russian forces are now trying — but failing — to oust Ukrainian fighters from the “dominant heights” overlooking Bakhmut.

From the Kremlin’s perspective, the area around Bakhmut is just part of the more than 1,000-kilometer (621-mile) front line that the Russian military must hold.

Dua Lipa slams UK Govt’s ‘smallminded’ language towards Albanians

She further mentioned, quoted by Female First UK: “However, immigrants who have come here have earned their keep by working incredibly hard. There needs to be more empathy, because people don’t leave their country unless they have to out of necessity, out of fear for their family.”

Singer-songwriter Dua Lipa has been “hurt” by the UK Government’s rhetoric towards Albanian migrants.

The ‘Levitating’ hitmaker was born in London to Kosovan-Albanian parents and hit out at the “small-minded” comments made by ministers such as Home Secretary Suella Braverman, who singled out “Albanian criminals” when discussing immigration last year, reports ‘Female First UK’.

Dua told the Sunday Times newspaper: “Of

Calcium

With age, you can start to lose more of this mineral than you absorb. That can make your bones break more easily (osteoporosis), especially for women after menopause. Calcium helps your muscles, nerves, cells, and blood vessels work right. You get most of it from your bones, which get it from food. Women over 50 and men over 70 should get about 20% more than other adults. Milk, yogurt, and cheese are good sources.

Vitamin B12

It helps make blood and nerve cells. You get it naturally from animal foods like meat, fish, eggs, and dairy. Pills, shots, and “B12-fortified” foods, like breakfast cereal, are other sources. Most Americans eat enough, but age can change that. Up to 30% of people over 50 have atrophic gastritis, which makes it harder for your body to absorb it from foods. Antacids, some meds, and weight loss surgery can contribute to a lack of B12.

Vitamin D

Your body needs it to absorb calcium. So take them in tandem to help prevent osteoporosis. Vitamin D also helps your muscles, nerves, and immune system work right. Most people get some vitamin D from sunlight. But your body is less able to convert sun’s rays to vitamin D as you age. It’s harder to get this vitamin from foods, but fatty fish like salmon, mackerel, and sardines are a good source.

Vitamin B6

Your body uses it to fight germs and to make energy. It also helps babies’ brains grow. You need more B6 as you get older. Some studies have found links between high B6 blood levels in seniors and better memory. But the vitamin doesn’t seem to improve mental abilities in people with dementia. Chickpeas are an easy and inexpensive source. So are liver, fatty fish and fortified breakfast cereals.

Magnesium

It helps your body make protein and bone, and it keeps your blood sugar stable. You can get it from nuts, seeds, and leafy greens. But older people tend to eat less of it. Plus, they’re more likely to have long-term health conditions or take many medications, both of which may leave you short of magnesium.

Probiotics

These “friendly” bac-

course it hurt. All those words thrown around about immigrants? I always felt London was an amalgamation of cultures.

It is integral to the city. So when you hear the government talk about Albanians, for example, it hurts.”

“It’s short-sighted and small-minded, but it’s the way a lot of people think. No matter how we try and change the rhetoric, there will always be those who think, ‘Immigrants are coming into the country and taking jobs’,” she added.

teria are good for your gut. You get them from fermented foods like yogurt or sauerkraut, or from supplements. They can help with digestive issues like diarrhea or irritable bowel syndrome, and may even protect against allergies. Probiotics are likely safe if you’re healthy. But talk to your doctor first if you have any medical issues or a weakened immune system.

Omega-3s

Are called “essential” because your body can’t make them. They’re important for your eyes, brain, and sperm cells. They also could help protect against age-related disease like Alzheimer’s, arthritis, and macular degeneration, which can cause blindness. Unless your doctor says otherwise, it’s best to get your omega-3s from food like fatty fish, walnuts, canola oil, or flaxseed.

Zinc

Many American seniors don’t get enough of this underappreciated micronutrient. It helps your sense of smell and taste, and fights infections and inflammation -- all important jobs in older bodies. Zinc also may protect your vision. Oysters are far and away the best source of this mineral. Otherwise, you can get it from beef, crab, and fortified breakfast cereals.

Selenium

It protects your cells from damage and infection, and keeps your thyroid working the right way. Selenium also can keep your muscles strong, and may help prevent agelinked illnesses like dementia, some types of cancer, and thyroid disease. Just one or two Brazil nuts a day should be enough. Don’t overdo it. Too much selenium can make your hair fall out and turn your nails brittle.

Potassium

Potassium plays a part in almost everything inside your body, including your heart, kidneys, muscles, and nerves. It also may help protect against stroke, high blood pressure, and osteoporosis. Many Americans don’t get enough. Dried apricots, bananas, spinach, milk, and yogurt are good sources. Ask your doctor before you take supplements. They can interfere with medications for high blood pressure, migraine, and other conditions.

Folate

This natural form of vitamin B9 is in leafy greens, nuts, beans, and other foods. Pregnant

Dua is not afraid to speak up on political issues but is wary of throwing her support behind certain politicians.

The 27-year-old star explained: “As much as I like being vocal about politics all over the world, I’d stay away from politicians.”

“I just think more carefully about aligning myself with that aspect now. It’s different when I talk about certain rights, but I’ve realised that no matter how much you want to believe someone is a good guy, they end up letting you down,” she signed off. (IANS)

Rapper Drake encouraged Nelly Furtado’s musical comeback. Nelly, 44, revealed that fellow Canadian Drake, 36, - who invited her to be a surprise guest for his All-Canadian North Stars event in Toronto last summer - reminded her about her legacy and value to the music industry and urged her to get back in the studio to work on new music. She told Variety: “I have more gratitude nowadays so I know how blessed I am to be a performer and creator. I’m really leaning into my profession. I met Drake a year ago and we had some deep conversations about life and art and he blew up my head reminding me what a valuable artist I am and told me to ‘boss up’ and make new music, and I listened. So, I couldn’t say no when he invited me on stage, I had to be brave and boss up and start the next chapter.”

As per Female First UK, Nelly has been working on her new album - her first since 2017’s ‘The Ride’

- since last year and she has enjoyed the collaborative, creative process. She added: “I have been making new music solid, nonstop for the last year the way I like to: late nights, space to create wildly and loads of community and collaboration. I am making a pop album influenced by sounds that I love. My album touches on dance - I did a record with SG Lewis that I adore. TMinus produced my Bomba Estereo song. T-Minus is a beast! I am proud of that record. One of my tunes is produced by Wonda GurlI love her energy.” (IANS)

Singer Taylor Swift, during her Chicago stop of her Eras Tour, took a moment to celebrate the LGBTQ+ community at the start of Pride Month.

She spoke out against America’s growing wave of anti-LGBTQ legislation, reports Variety.

“I wish that every place was safe and beautiful for people in the LGBTQ community,” said Swift. The singer-songwriter continued by sharing that she notices fans who are living “authentically and beautifully” and wants them to know that her shows are a “safe, celebratory space” for them.

As per Variety, Swift’s speech took place after her performance of ‘You Need to Calm Down,’ with the singer thanking the arena of fans who passionately sang along to the song’s pro-LGBTQ lyrics. While Swift celebrated the community, she reminded the concert-goers: “We can’t talk about pride without talking about pain.” She further men -

You probably know fiber is good for you. But did you know it’s even more important as you age? Swift then concluded her speech telling the crowd, “I love you guys so much and happy Pride Month.” (IANS)

Multivitamins

Proof that multivitamins benefit seniors who are otherwise healthy. The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force recommends against daily multivitamins to ward off cancer or heart disease. Multivitamins marketed at seniors may be tailored with higher doses of vitamins D or B12 or less iron. But unless you have a poor appetite or have conditions that keep you from eating a healthy diet, you probably don’t need them.

Leipzig snatch 2nd straight German Cup title

BERLIN, JUN 4 (IANS): Second-half goals from Christopher Nkunku and Dominik Szaboszlai helped Leipzig defend the German Cup title after seeing off Eintracht Frankfurt 2-0 in the final.

Titleholders Leipzig caught a bright start at soldout Berlin Olympia stadium and came close with only four minutes played when Timo Werner’s shot from 13 meters tested Frankfurt goalkeeper Kevin Trapp on Saturday night.

The Eagles needed some time to gain a foothold into the encounter and produced their first clear-cut opportunity in the 17th minute as Kolo Muani rattled the side netting from a tight angle following a fast break.

Frankfurt increased the pressure, but it was Leipzig, who posed more danger in front of the target as Konrad Laimer teed up

for Nkunku, whose low shot went just wide in the 42nd minute.

Oliver Glasner’s boys piled on the pressure after the restart but couldn’t do

damage to Leipzig’s wellorganized defence, Xinhua reported.

MADRID, JUN 4 (IANS):

as Nkunku danced through Frankfurt’s territory before beating Trapp with a deflected effort from close range in the 71st minute.

Frankfurt’s resistance was broken, whereas the Bulls gained momentum and made it two in the 85th minute after Nkunku’s square pass found Szoboszlai, who drilled the ball past Trapp to seal the deal.

“It is the second title for us. It is always great to win here. We are happy and will enjoy the moment. We didn’t take a lot of risks in the first half as Frankfurt is a great team,” said Leipzig midfielder Konrad Laimer.

“We played very well but in finals little details make the difference. At the end it was a deflected ball that initiated our defeat but also the lack of power to turn things around,” said Frankfurt team captain Sebastian Rode.

Dahiya pulls out of Bishkek UWW due to knee strain

BISHKEK, JUN 4 (PTI):

Olympic silver medallist wrestler Ravi Dahiya pulled out of the Bishkek Ranking Series event on Sunday due to a knee strain while Mulaym Yadav and Pankaj lost their bronze play-offs as Indian men’s freestyle team will return empty-handed from the tournament.

Dahiya, who entered the 61kg competition, was up against Kyrgyzstan’s Taiyrbek Zhumashbek Uulu in the Qualification round. It was Dahiya’s first competition since finishing sixth at the World Championship in Belgrade in September 2022.

However, the 25-yearold wrestler from Nahri

did not take the risk of aggravating his injury and opted out.

“Ravi has recovered from his right knee injury that he sustained in January this year but during the warm up, he suffered a strain on the same knee. Since Asian Games trials are near,

he decided to pull out of the event as he did not want to risk aggravating the injury,” said a member of the Indian support staff.

In the same 61kg category, Pankaj set up a quarterfinal clash against U-23 world champion Aman Sehrawat with a confident 8-2 win over Gerogia’s Giorgi Goniashvili.

It was Aman, winner of a bronze in Zagreb Open in February this year, who was favourite to win this all-Indian clash but Pankaj emerged a surprise winner with a comfortable 8-1 margin. Pankaj was quick with his counter-attacking moves and it rattled Aman. He could not make the

final as he lost the last-four clash 0-7 to Uulu and later, Pankaj lost his bronze medal bout 1-6 to Turkey’s Emrah Ormanoglu.

In the 70kg event, Yadav comfortably beat Kazakhstan’s Doszhan Asetov 9-4 in his qualification round and followed that up with a confident 6-2 win over Georgia’s Davit Patsinashvili. Yadav’s defence stood out during his quarterfinal bout. He later lost his semifinal 1-7 to local favourite Orozobek Toktomambetov. In the bronze medal match against Turkey’s Servet Coskun, he was trailing 1-6 but logged five straight points to tie the score.

While appreciating Chokri Area Games and Sports Association (CAGSA) and the village for the initiative, he stated that it was a good sign that the village is trying to promote sports at the grassroot level. He hoped more talents can be nurtured at the village level with the coaching camp for the coaches.

Koso also asked the

young coaches to keep in touch to share the ideas, their plan and how to go about in the coaching career. President of CAGSA, Sekho Dawhuo said the course key element was to train the coaches so that they can impart their knowledge about football at grassroot level in the remotest areas. He also appreciated the instructor Koso, who is the only AFC A license coach for rendering his time and knowledge to the coaches sharing his vast experiences from Coach Education and Coaching Career. He hoped

the coaches can excel in their career and bring out talented players to represent the state and the country one day. Changsang, 35-yearold and the oldest coach from Tuensang speaking on behalf of the trainee said he had learnt a lot from the week-long camp and hope to share his knowledge to the younger generation. While encouraging the coaches, he said it was not about passing or failing the course exam but the passion and dedication for the love for the game which was more important.

FIFA U20 WC: Italy beat Colombia to reach semis

SAN JUAN, JUN 4 (IANS):

Tournament-leading goalscorer Cesare Casadei added yet another goal to his kitty and led Italy to the FIFA U-20 World Cup semifinals with a 3-1 win over Colombia, at San Juan Stadium, here. With Saturday’s win

Italy booked a semifinal spot for the third consecutive U-20 World Cup. Casadei became Italy’s all-time top scorer in U-20 World Cup history with six goals, surpassing Riccardo Orsolini, who scored five in 2017.

Italy will face either Korea Republic or Nigeria in the semifinal on Thursday. Casadei headed in the opening goal from Tommaso Baldanzi’s corner kick to give Italy an early boost. He then turned provider for the latter, cushioning a header perfectly in Baldanzi’s path to double the lead.

Shortly after half-time, Baldanzi added another assist to his name, cutting back for Francesco Esposito to score with a flicked finish.

Jhojan Torres gave Colombia a lifeline with a superb curling effort from just outside Italy’s penalty area, but it proved to be a mere consolation.

The Indian pair had qualified second to the French pair but turned the tables on them in the final. India now has two gold medals, one silver and one bronze from the World Cup after two days of competition.

India won two more medals on the day, a silver and a bronze, coming in the 10m Air Pistol Mixed Team event through the pairing of Sainyam and Abhinav Chaudhary and Suruchi Inder Singh and Shubham Bisla, respectively.
