Situation in Nagaland conducive Face mask that can kill Covid virus developed for private investors, says Rio Correspondent
KOHIMA, JUL 4 (NPN): With union finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman giving miss to the first Nagaland CSR and Investment Conclave 2022 due to “unforeseen circumstances”, the programme went ahead with state chief minister Neiphiu Rio gracing the inaugural function here at State Banquet Hall Monday evening. Addressing the conclave, chief minister Neiphiu Rio mentioned about the peaceful condition Nagaland during the past 25 years following signing of the cease fire between the government of India with various Naga political groups. He said crime rate in Nagaland was much lower than most states in India and, therefore, law and order should not be an issue for investors and also exuded confidence that the Naga issue would resolved soon. Rio also acknowledged the guidance and support received from finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman and various ministries under her which enabled the conclave to widen its scope over various sectors. Rio lamented that Nagaland has not been able to attract sufficient attention of private companies to take up sufficient projects from their CSR obligations in Nagaland. In this regard, he said out of the estimated Rs.1.25 lakh crore, which private companies spent as part of CSR over the last seven years, a miniscule 0.006% has been spent in Nagaland. Rio also said that Naga-

land has been implementing some excellent CSR projects in the areas of health and education in some of the districts of Nagaland such as provisioning of mobile medical units etc. He also mentioned that such ongoing successful interventions implemented at local level can be replicated on a larger scale across the entire State with the collaboration of the respective District/ State Administration or local NGOs/foundations with funding from potential CSR partners. By launching the Chief Minister’s Micro Finance initiative, which is aimed at promoting local entrepreneurship, Rio said this will improve availability and access to credit for them while a healthy partnership with corporates from the rest of the country will ensure sustainability for these entrepreneurs. Rio expressed optimism that private companies with their resources and expertise can help Nagaland in designing, developing and delivering innovative solutions with the use of advanced technology. He also informed that employment and skill de-
velopment initiatives were imperative given that Nagaland was blessed with a talented and naturally innovative workforce though unemployment was quite prevalent. He added that the State is working towards introducing a modern land law that would allow for easier availability of land through leasing for identified sectors in Dimapur, Kohima, and other identified districts. D u r i n g t h e eve n t , chief minister, Neiphiu Rio also launched the Nagaland Single Window System; Hospital Information System; Drugs & Vaccine Distribution Management System (DVDMS), Equipment Maintenance & Management System (EMMS), and CSR project tracking and management system. He also disbursed the first installment of Performance Incentive Grants under NECTAR to 738 government schools. CEO, IDAN, Alemtemshi Jamir, while delivering the keynote address, said the Conclave was organized to encourage the private sector by paving the ways and means to invest their resources in the development
of the State. State chief secretary J. Alam, in his address on business economy and social environment overview, said the economy of Nagaland at present revolves around agriculture and services in which government services have a significant share. Alam said in Nagaland GDP as in 2021-22, services sector contributed 61% and agriculture 27% while the contribution from manufacturing activities including construction was 11 %. The per capita income in Nagaland was about $ 2,000 (at GSDP of Rs. 32,424 crore in 2021-22), he said. In her address Project Head, Her and Now Giz, Julia Karst while presenting policy brief on women entrepreneurship, said female labour force participation rate of 44.7% Nagaland was one of the highest economic participation of women in the country. She said women own 21.6% of enterprises in Nagaland, which was comparable to the national average in India with most being self-employed and in informal micro businesses. Karst was hopeful that entrepreneurship in Nagaland was at a tipping point and with an enabling business ecosystem, entrepreneurship in the state could really take off. She said GIZ vision was to catalyse women entrepreneurship in Nagaland by supporting the Government of Nagaland to create a supportive ecosystem for women entrepreneurs and has set five key recommendations on how to turn this vision into reality.

NEW DELHI, JUL 4 (PTI): Nagaland was among six States and UTs ranked in the aspiring leaders’ category, according to the ranking of states and Union territories by the department for promotion of industry and internal trade (DPIIT). The other states include Chhattisgarh, Delhi, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Chandigarh and Puducherry. According to the ranking, the emerging startup ecosystems category includes Andhra Pradesh, Bihar, Mizoram and Ladakh. They were evaluated across seven reform areas consisting of 26 action points,
pylene filters used in N95 face masks. “The active filtration layers in N95 masks are very sensitive to chemical modification. It can make them perform worse in terms of filtration, so they essentially no longer perform like N95s. They are made out of polypropylene, which is difficult to chemically modify,”. “Another challenge is that you don’t want to disrupt the very fine network of fibres in these masks, which might make them more difficult to breathe through,” Zha added. The team, including researchers from Mas-
ranging from institutional support, fostering innovation, access to market, incubation and funding support. Further, Gujarat and Karnataka have been ranked as the best performers in developing startup ecosystem for budding entrepreneurs. Among smaller states having population of less than one crore, Meghalaya has been adjudged as the best performer. The rankings are based on the initiatives taken to develop the startup ecosystem for promoting budding entrepreneurs. For the third time in a row, Gujarat was ranked as the best performer.

The team used only UV light and acetone in their process, which are widely available, to make it easy to implement. The process can be applied to already manufactured polypropylene filters, rather than necessitating the development of new ones, the researchers said. The team did see a decrease in filtration ef-

State logs four Start-up ranking: Nagaland fresh Covid cases in aspiring leaders’ category DIMAPUR, JUL 4 (NPN): Nagaland reported four fresh cases of COVID-19 on Monday pushing the total caseload to 35516. According to health department’s daily bulletin, out of the four fresh cases, two were reported from Longleng (returnees/ travellers) and two from Peren (traced contacts). Today’s sample positivity rate stands at 7.69%. Currently, there are nine active cases in the state while the death toll remained unchanged at 757. PTI adds: India logged 16,135 new coronavirus infections taking the total tally of COVID-19 cases to 4,35,18,564, while the active cases increased to 1,13,864, according to the Union Health Ministry data updated on Monday.
WASHINGTON, JUL 4 (PTI): Researchers have developed a new N95 face mask that can not only reduce COVID-19 spread but also kill the SARS-CoV-2 virus upon contact with it. The mask can potentially be worn longer, causing less plastic waste as it does not need to be replaced as frequently, the researchers said. “We think the work is a first step toward longer-lasting, self-sterilising personal protective equipment, such as the N95 respirator,” said Edmund Palermo, from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in the US. “It may help reduce transmission of airborne pathogens in general,” Palermo said. In research recently published in the journal Applied ACS Materials and Interfaces, the team successfully grafted broadspectrum antimicrobial polymers onto the polypro-

The user could wear an unaltered N95 mask along with another polypropylene layer with the antimicrobial polymer on top, according to the researchers. In the future, manufacturers could make a mask with the antimicrobial polymer incorporated into the top layer, they said. “Hopefully, we are on the other side of the COVID pandemic. But this kind of technology will be increasingly important,” said Zha. “The threat of diseases caused by airborne microbes is not going away. It’s about time that we improved the performance and sustainability of the materials that we use to protect ourselves,” Zha added.

Body identification has become increasingly difficult due to tissue deterioration and finding of the missing bodies was also
increasingly difficult as the rescue teams’ ability to trace them decreased with depth, the report of the Noney DC stated.
The search and rescue operation will continue until all the missing bodies were found, said state water resource and relief & disaster management minister Awangbow Newmai today. The minister is supervising the search operation at the ground zero of the landslide affected areas. DIMAPUR, JUL 4 (NPN): Phomching Area Students’ Union (PASU) has appealed to the state government to immediately depute SDO (Civil) to Phomching Headquarters, failing which the government would be held solely responsible for any untoward incidents. In a press release, PASU president Wanggok Konyak and general secretary L Wangjam expressed dismay that Phomching Headquarters, established in the year 1969, had been functioning without SDO (C) for over two and a half years. According to the union, the Commissioner,
Nagaland was intimated through a formal letter dated May 2, 2022 that the general public was facing grievances in the absence of the SDO (C). However, PASU said they have received no positive response till date. Accusing the state government of being adamant and lackadaisical, the union said that the government had initiated transfer and posting of administrative officers on many occasions, but failed to deploy the same at Phomching Headquarters. The union reminded that Phornching Headquarters, which was located
along Indo-Myanmar international border and sharing inter-state border with Arunachal Pradesh, cannot be simply ignored, adding that the “law and order situation” could arise at any point. Further, PASU said the general public was facing untold hardship in the absence of SDO (C) especially while carrying out office related work. In the light of the above, the union has reiterated appeal to the government to immediately intervene and initiate measures to deploy full-time SDO (C) at Phomching Headquarters. K Y M C

tEA aims to plant 1 billion fruit trees by 2050 Correspondent KOHIMA, JUN 4 (NPN): The Entrepreneurs Associates (tEA) has highlighted its plans to plant 1 billion fruit trees by 2050 under its “Trees for Wealthy” (TFW) movement, which was launched on November 22, 2019. Addressing a press conference at its head office, here on Monday, tEA CEO, Neichüte Doulo, said the movement was a first of its kind to bring about a revolution in the local economy alongside restoring and conserving the environment through the widescale plantation of fruit trees and not just any other tree. He said the slogan “Micro by one, volume by mass” was built on the unique land holding system and social structure of ethnic communities of Nagaland and Manipur states particularly and North East Region (NER) of India in general. Highlighting the push behind the start of the movement, Doulo said since 2010, tEA had planted about 1 lakh trees for Mithun Bio Fencing through the support of Tata Trusts and planted about 35,000 native oaks with the support of Axis Bank Foundation in 2014. However, he said, those initiatives failed to see any perpetuation of increased tree plantation by farmers on their own and they planted only during the project support period. In addition to the need for continued plantation of trees and the concern of flash flood in Nagaland in 2014, Doulo said the erratic climate changes sparked the need for tEA to also contribute its bit for global environment restoration. Doulo said that a total of 4.6 lakh fruit trees had been planted since the launch of the movement and tEA plans to plant 5 lakh fruit trees in 2022 alone. K Y M C
Neichüte Doulo addressing press conference at tEA’s office in Kohima on Monday. (NP)
Through the movement, a mixed variety of fruit trees like plum, orange, lime, guava, persimmon, avocado, mango, fig, tamarillo, walnut, pears, litchee etc. had been introduced including quick yielding fruit trees so that farmers could harvest early and start generating income to motivate and encourage them to adopt fruit tree plantation as a
viable long-term livelihood. Doulo said tEA was only an NGO and therefore could only trigger the movement with the required logistics and innovative programs. He said that since the people have the basic tools like land, labour and minimum capital they had the potential to turn Nagaland into the “fruit hub” of India. Also, since Nagaland was in the 6th Hotspots of the World’s biodiversity, he said the state could truly take the advantage by adopting mass fruit tree plantation under “Micro by One, Volume by Mass” where 10 lakh farmers and individuals on an average planting 1000 fruit trees would indeed lead to 1billion fruit trees, Doulo said.

Yashwant Sinha to visit Assam; Few staff, too many patients at NEIGRIHMS Ajmal may support BJP’s Murmu
Yashwant Sinha GUWAHATI, JUL 4 (IANS): Yashwant Sinha, who is the joint Opposition candidate for the upcoming Presidential election, is likely to visit Assam from July 9-11, Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) chief Bhupen Borah said on Monday. “The Congress has already decided to vote for Yashwant Sinha and our party workers will accompany him during his visit to the state,” Borah said. The Assam Congress has also decided to invite in Raijor Dal chief Akhil Gogoi and CPI-M leader
Manoranjan Talukdar to join the campaign for Sinha. However, it is learnt that APCC has not invited any other political party of the state in this campaign spree. In Assam, the Badruddin Ajmal-led All Indian United Democratic Front (AIUDF) is the second prominent opposition party which has 15 MLAs and one Lok Sabha MP. Congress had fought last year’s Assembly election by forging an alliance with the AIUDF. But soon after the poll debacle, Congress snapped ties with AIUDF. Ajmal has already hinted to support NDA’s Presidential nominee, Draupadi Murmu. Borah has denied having any contact with the AIUDF in this matter. “Yashwant Sinha can meet anyone and any party leadership can meet him. We have no contact with any other party and whom to meet will be completely his own (Sinha’s) choice,” Borah added.
NEGRIHMS SHILLONG, JUL 4 (AGENCIES): The North East Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health and Medical Sciences (NEIGRIHMS) is increasing manpower and the number of operation theatres to deal with the increasing inflow of patients. NEIGRIHMS is the only super-specialty medical institute in Meghalaya, The Shillong Times reported. Nalin Mehta, the institute’s director told The Shillong Times that NEIGRIHMS has been grappling with staff shortages for
some time now. “We have advertised for the (vacant) posts and done the internal screening. The problem should be addressed soon,” he said. Officials from the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare are doing the external screening following which the dates of the interview would be fixed. According to the director, the number of people to be operated upon is far more than the number of operation theatres available. “Every hospital has a waiting list but it is a little longer
in our case because of fewer OTs,” he said. “Apart from the staff, we are increasing the number of OTs in three months,” Mehta said. The operations are currently conducted depending on how serious the condition of a patient is, he said. The prioritisation of cases is the standard practice for every hospital in the world, he pointed out. Many patients have been complaining that NEIGRIHMS makes them wait for months to get operated on.

SHILLONG, JUL 4: The agitating ad-hoc school teachers in Meghalaya on Monday rejected the State Cabinet’s decision to upgrade their salaries far less than demanded and would therefore continue with their protest. On Monday, the Cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Conrad Sangma decided to upgrade the salaries of secondary, higher secondary and science teachers by Rs. 9000 and lower, upper primary, Hindi and fourth school teachers by Rs. 6000 from July 1, 2022. Sangma, who also holds the Finance portfolio, said the enhancement will impact roughly Rs 100 crore annually on the state budget. The decision to enhance the grant-in-aid to the ad-hoc school teachers came after the teachers refused to call off their indefinite sit-in-protest near the additional state secretariat to put pressure on the government to give in to their demands. Soon after the cabinet meeting, the agitating teachers went into a huddle and announced that they would not accept the upgrade. The teachers are demanding that their salaries be increased by Rs. 18000 uniformly. “This is an insult and tactic to divide and rule over the teachers like the British. There is no uniformity and the enhancement is far less than our demands. We would continue with our agitation and meet again tomorrow (Tuesday) and decide,” Federation of School Teachers of Meghalaya Spokesperson, Mayborn Lyngdoh said. The school teachers were demanding
a uniform 75 per cent hike of their present salaries, however, the state cabinet decided to upgrade the salaries of secondary and higher secondary teachers by 50 per cent and those from lower and upper primary by 25 percent. Terming the cabinet decision as “unilateral and taken without consultations”, the FASTOM leader claimed, “the democratic process was not followed, despite our democratic and peaceful protest.” In Meghalaya there are different categories of teachers which include government school teachers, deficit school teachers and ad hoc school teachers. Ad-hoc school teachers are those appointed by the school management committees of private educational institutions. This legacy of different categories of school teachers has been inherited by the present government and has been prevalent for several decades. The state government has been providing grant in aid to these ad hoc schools for decades. Meanwhile, several NGOs and political leaders from across party lines visited the protesting site and extended their support to the agitating teachers. On the other hand, Senior Trinamool Congress (TMC) legislator and Leader of Opposition, Dr Mukul Sangma has suggested the government cut down on the MLA scheme by Rs 50 lakh to make up for the hike in the salary of ad-hoc school teachers. “Cut down on our MLA schemes @ Rs. 50, 00, 000/ save thirty crore of rupees for meeting the requirements,” Sangma tweeted.

Uddhav accuses BJP of plotting to finish CM Shinde wins trust vote in Maha Assembly Sena; dares to hold Maha mid-term polls
MUMBAI, JUL 4 (PTI): Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde on Monday won the crucial floor test in the state Assembly on the last day of the two-day special session of the House. In the 288-member House, 164 MLAs voted for the motion of confidence, while 99 voted against it. Three legislators abstained from voting, while 21 legislators, including Congress’s Ashok Chavan and Vijay Wadettiwar, were absent during the trust vote. Speaker Rahul Narvekar announced that the trust vote was carried by a majority vote. After the death of a Shiv Sena MLA recently, the current strength of the Assembly is reduced to 287, thus the majority mark is 144. Last month, Eknath Shinde launched a rebellion against the Sena. Majority of MLAs sided with him, which led to the collapse of the Maha Vikas Aghadi government led by Uddhav Thackeray. Shinde was sworn in as the chief minister on June

During the floor test, MLAs Abu Azmi and Rais Shaikh (both of the Samajwadi Party) and Shah Farukh Anwar (AIMIM) abstained from voting. Eleven Cong ress MLAs - Ashok Chavan, Vijay Wadettiwar, Dheeraj Deshmukh, Praniti Shinde, Jitesh Antapurkar, Zeeshan Siddiqui, Raju Awale, Mohan Hambarde, Kunal Patil, Madhavrao
Jawalgaonkar and Shirish Chaudhary - were absent during the floor test. Chavan and Wadettiwar came late and were unable to enter the House at the time of the vote. The NCP legislators absent from the House were - Anil Deshmukh, Nawab Malik, Dattatray Bharane, Anna Bansode, Babandada Shinde and Sangram Jagtap. Deshmukh and Malik are currently in jail following arrest in separate money laundering cases.
Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde on Monday said he had been suppressed for a long time and the rebellion led by him was a fallout of the unfair treatment meted out to him, an apparent reference to his old association with the Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena. “The happenings of today didn’t happen in just one day,” Shinde said in his victory speech after the newly-formed government led by him won the trust vote in the Legislative Assembly. “When I came for election here, there are people in this House who witnessed how I was treated. I have been suppressed for a long time. Sunil Prabhu (Shiv Sena MLA from the Uddhav Thackeray faction) is also a witness,” he said without elaborating. Quoting former deputy chief minister Ajit Pawar, Shinde said the senior NCP leader had told him that an “accident” has occurred in Shiv Sena after the formation
of the tripartite Maha Vikas Aghadi government, which came to power in November 2 0 1 9 . Wi t h o u t t a k i n g names, Shinde also referred to Uddhav Thackeray’s statement that NCP chief Sharad Pawar had informed him ahead of the formation of Maha Vikas Aghadi that leaders of Congress and NCP were not keen to work under Shinde. “But after the formation of the MVA government, Ajit Pawar told me that an accident took place in your own party (Shiv Sena). We were never against you becoming the chief minister,” Shinde said apparently referring t o U d d h av T h a c k e r ay becoming the chief minister. Shinde also claimed that he was earlier promised the post of deputy chief minister when the BJP-Shiv Sena alliance was in power. “I was told by Union minister (and BJP leader) Nitin Gadkari that I will soon get a good posting,” he said.
MUMBAI, JUL 4 (PTI): Against the backdrop of the Eknath Shinde-led government winning the trust vote in the Maharashtra A s s e m b l y, S h i v S e n a president and former CM Uddhav Thackeray on Monday alleged it was the BJP’s ploy to finish his party, and challenged it to hold mid-term elections in the state. Addressing a meeting of Sena district presidents at the Shiv Sena Bhawan here, Thackeray said it was an insult of the Constitution to r un the Legislative Assembly in an arbitrary manner. As per a statement issued by the Shiv Sena, Thackeray, in his speech, told the Sena district presidents to stay together if they want to put up a fight. “This is BJP’s ploy to end the Shiv Sena, I dare them to hold mid-term polls in the state. Instead of playing all these games, we will go to the court of people. If we are wrong,

people of the state will send us home and if you (BJP and Shinde group) are wrong, people will send you home,” the statement said quoting Thackeray. He also asked experts to express their views on whether political developments in the state were in accordance with the Constitution or whether constitutional norms were violated.
Last month, Eknath Shinde launched a rebellion against the Sena. Majority of MLAs sided with him, which led to the collapse of the Maha Vikas Aghadi government led by Uddhav Thackeray. Shinde was swor n in as the chief minister on June 30, a day after Thackeray quit the post. BJP’s Devendra Fadnavis was sworn in as the deputy CM.

The two wanted criminals belong to Lawrence Bishnoi and Goldy Brar gang alliance, they said. According to police, Ankit was one of the shooters involved in the killing of Moosewala, while Bhiwani was responsible for harbouring four of the shooters. A senior police officer said Bhiwani, a native of Haryana, handles the operations of Lawrence Bishnoi gang in Rajasthan. He is also wanted in a case at Churu in Rajasthan. Addressing a press c o n f e r e n c e, S p e c i a l Commissioner of Police (Special Cell) H G S Dhaliwal said after the initial arrests made in the case, multiple teams were working extensively to nab those involved in providing logistical support, weapons and hideout facilities to them. “Our teams conducted raids in six states, including Madhya Pradesh,

the Election Commission (EC) issues a notification, calling upon the electors to elect the next vice president. The BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) has a clear edge in the election, in which the members of the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha, including the nominated ones, are eligible to vote. The political parties are yet to name their candidates for the election.
The vice president is also the chairperson of the Rajya Sabha. The electoral college in the vice-presidential polls comprises a total of 788 members of both houses of Parliament. Since all the electors are members of Parliament, the value of the vote of each MP would be the same -- one -- the EC said in a statement issued on June 29. The election is held in accordance with the
system of proportional representation by means of a single transferable vote and the voting is held by secret ballot. There is no concept of open voting in the election and showing the ballot to anyone under any circumstances in the case of presidential and vice-presidential elections is totally prohibited, the EC had cautioned, adding that the parties cannot issue a whip to its MPs in the
matter of voting. The nomination paper of a candidate has to be subscribed by at least 20 electors as proposers and by at least 20 other electors as seconders. An elector can subscribe to only one nomination paper of a candidate as either a proposer or a seconder. A candidate can file a maximum of four nomination papers. The security deposit for the election is Rs 15,000.

Nagaland Post VOL. XXXII NO. 209 DIMAPUR, TUESDAY, JULY 5, 2022
End of strange bedfellows
A
fter being outfoxed at every turn by his nemsis- BJP leader Devendra FadnavisUddhav Thackeray who led the Maha Vikas Aghadi(MVA)government, is now pushed to the brink of political ignominy as he finds his late father’s Shiv Sena party now in the hands of rebel leader and now chief minister Eknath Shinde. The BJP and Shiv Sena combined had together won required majority to form the government in 2019 in Maharastra. However, for whatever reasons or for whoever succeeded in planting seeds of ambition into the Shiv Sena, the party joined hands with the most unthinkable of parties such as NCP and Congress, the sworn enemies of Hindutvawadis. Right since the cross voting in the Legislative Council elections on June 20, where Shiv Sena MLAs cross voted for BJP against Congress nominee of the MVA, the sign was large and clear that BJP was hand in glove with rebel leader Shinde. Then rebel leader Shinde was able to hold meetings with rebel MLAs without being noticed by Uddhav and the MVA government. Even after media broke the news, Shinde managed to rope in more MLAs, albeit with some help from BJP, to be spirited away to a hotel in Surat. Uddhav intentionally or not, moved out of the chief minister’s official house on June 23 and thereby signalling that he has given up hope or accepted defeat. He tried emotional appeal to Sena rebels but it was too little too late. Sena rebels congregated at Surat where the BJP government deployed hundreds of state police security around the hotel. From there Sena MLAs were shifted to Guwahati where the BJP government provided them with heavy police security around Radisson Blu hotel. Numbers in the rebel camp at Guwahati increased on a daily basis as more flew from Mumbai. With nearly 40 MLAs out of 55 Shinde and BJP made the claim before a friendly governor. The Shinde-BJP government was sworn in on July 3 and in an unusual manner, the friendly governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari present him with a bouquet of flowers. It was also unusual that Devendra Fadnavis leader of the 106 strong BJP accepted the number two position of deputy chief minister as against Shinde who was sworn-in as chief minister despite having only 39 MLAs. The BJP knows how to manage contradictions unlike other parties. By making Shinde as chief minister, BJP ensured that the Sena rebellion was legitimised and Shiv Sainiks accept the reunited a hardcore Hindutva coalition. Maharashtra was just chugging along on its way to prove that Uddhav’s tamed and soft Hindutva and NCP and Congress could govern despite conflicting ideologies, until Uddhav misread the writing on the wall. The Shinde-Fadnavis coalition will easily pass the floor test and that will be the icing on the cake. Henceforth, it can be expected that both the NCP and Congress would also be shaken by dissidence. This will put BJP in the saddle as the power behind the collation throne. In addition, BJP can also take a serious look at files of NCP or Congress leaders in erstwhile MVA coalition and do what it does best.
DailyDevotion One of God’s Great “Don’ts” Do not fret— it only causes harm. —Psalm 37:8 Fretting means getting ourselves “out of joint” mentally or spiritually. It is one thing to say, “Do not fret,” but something very different to have such a nature that you find yourself unable to fret. It’s easy to say, “Rest in the Lord, and wait patiently for Him” (Psalm 37:7) until our own little world is turned upside down and we are forced to live in confusion and agony like so many other people. Is it possible to “rest in the Lord” then? If this “Do not” doesn’t work there, then it will not work anywhere. This “Do not” must work during our days of difficulty and uncertainty, as well as our peaceful days, or it will never work. And if it will not work in your particular case, it will not work for anyone else. Resting in the Lord is not dependent on your external circumstances at all, but on your relationship with God Himself. Worrying always results in sin. We tend to think that a little anxiety and worry are simply an indication of how wise we really are, yet it is actually a much better indication of just how wicked we are. Fretting rises from our determination to have our own way. Our Lord never worried and was never anxious, because His purpose was never to accomplish His own plans but to fulfill God’s plans. Fretting is wickedness for a child of God. Have you been propping up that foolish soul of yours with the idea that your circumstances are too much for God to handle? Set all your opinions and speculations aside and “abide under the shadow of the Almighty” (Psalm 91:1). Deliberately tell God that you will not fret about whatever concerns you. All our fretting and worrying is caused by planning without God.

India’s plastic ban may have opened a gold mine for paper makers
W
ith the ban on single-use plastic coming into force on July 1, the plastic straws that you use to sip juice and the small plastic spoons vendors outside your office stick into snacks will become a thing of the past. W h i l e t h a t ’s b a d news for plastics companies, it’s a boon for paper companies, as they will likely be called on to provide replacements. Investors have already recognised the immense opportunity and shares of such companies have risen. In the last six sessions, JK Paper is up 7 percent, Andhra Paper: 7 percent, West Coast Paper: 13 percent, Tamil Newsprint: 16 percent, Satia Industries: 12 percent, and Emami paper: 10 percent. Analysts are being cautious, though they recognise the opportunity. They, however, believe that there are some applications where the paper industry can chip in, for instance supplying paper
straws or wrappings. What will be banned From July 1, plastic that can be used just once will be banned because of the environmental damage it causes. This automatically proscribes items such as earbuds, balloon sticks, candy and ice-cream sticks, cutlery (plates, cups, glasses, forks, spoons, knives, trays), and wrappings around sweet boxes, invitation cards and cigarette packs, PVC banners under 100 microns and polystyrene for decoration. This is not the first time such bans have been announced. However, the difference is that earlier, bans were announced at the market level, making enforcement difficult. This time the supply of raw materials to factories is being restricted. Some companies, including FMCG giant Unilever and Nestle, which rely on single-use plastics extensively for packaging, have already committed to phase out and move towards recyclable plastics
by 2025. The government has said it is forming national and state-level control rooms to check the illegal manufacture, import, stocking, distribution, use, and sale of banned singleuse plastic items. Many cafes and restaurants have already shifted to paper straws, though adoption is still limited to high-end restaurants. For instance, Starbucks has done away with plastic straws. Dabur India says it has started providing paper straws with Real juice packs. Parle Agro, which makes Frooti, has started importing paper straws for its popular drink, which usually comes in a small tetra pack with a plastic straw. Analysts say the industry size of single-use plastics is estimated to be Rs 10,000 crore. Per an estimate, India consumes about 6 billion plastic straws every year, and these will need to be replaced with paper straws. AS Mehta, President
& Director of JK Paper, said the company has already introduced many paper-based products, including paper straws and paper cups. “A sizeable quantity has star ted moving. Paper bags are one category where there is huge demand … because they have replaced plastic bags,” he added. The company said it is also developing many more use-based products and will introduce them soon. Inflation and price hikes Amid the opportunity, there are worries over rising raw material costs for most paper mills. Prices of key raw materials such as pulp, chemicals, coal, furnace oil, and freight rates have surged, leading to input cost pressure. “Pulp prices right now are at $950 per tonne, so paper prices should be $1,000 per tonne minimum,” Mehta of JK Paper. Coal prices hit an alltime high of about $435 per tonne in May, along
Post-mortem
O
Check the speck in your eyes first
n June 6, 2022, the local papers published the advisory under the caption ‘An Appeal’ by the Chairman, UDA warning the commentators on the issue of the Naga political problem to be cautious and avoid specious commentaries in both print and social media. Possibly the Chairman, UDA has given the statement on behalf of the UDA ministry. The 60 MLAs in the Opposition-less Govt. are the legitimate leaders of the people of Nagaland, and it is right for them to guide and advise their citizens on any given subject relating to people’s welfare. Nonetheless, the questions are as to whether they do walk the talk and whether they have laid exemplary actions for the citizens of the State to emulate attracts boomerang. Quoting the said statement “Therefore, the perception of the present day UDA Govt. is focused on inclusiveness-which means all the Naga Nationalist Groups should be part of the long awaited Peace Accord in order not to repeat the same mistake of the past.” The implication of this sentence is easily understood. It means none of the Naga negotiators, neither the Wo r k i n g C o m m i t t e e (WC), 7 NNPGs nor the NSCN(IM) be left out as and when the political solution is evolved. Well, the NSCN(IM) signed the Framework Agreement with the representative of the GoI on August 3rd, 2015 on its own volition, and neither that was done under duress nor with any type of coercion. The WC, 7 NNPGs too had its Agreed Position/Preamble signed on November 17th, 2017 under similar environment. Therefore, I strongly believe that the same pattern will be followed when the agreement is finally signed by the negotiating parties. In other words, neither the WC, 7 NNPGs nor the NSCN(IM) can be forced by the GoI or by any facilitator or by the Naga public to sign the agreement. The Naga negotiators have full freedom to opt for solution or opt out from solution. Reiterating what I had written already that neither the inclusive agreement can fetch superior agreement nor the so called exclu-
sive agreement will fetch inferior dividend is what I understand and I believe. Whichever negotiator enters into agreement deed with the GoI will do it so for the Nagas as a whole. Therefore, the vocabularies as ‘unity’ and ‘inclusiveness’ may not be misused for self-imposed precondition to scuttle the smooth passage of solution on the plea that one negotiator declines to sign and the unilateral agreement is unpalatable. My friend, the honorable MLA Imkong Imchen’s assertion that the demand of NSCN(IM) for Naga flag and Naga constitution is admissible in the agreement as per the Assam CM’s positive gesture is misleading. Every enlightened person understands that the Constitution and Flag are synonymous with a nation’s sovereignty. As of today, quoting what languages were used in the Framework Agreement as “the NSCN understood and appreciated the intricacies of the Indian system” and “Both sides have understood each other’s positions……” Whereas, the WC, 7NNPGs stated “…understanding of each other’s factual positions” in its Agreed Position. Thus, there are no ambiguities in both the FA and the Agreed Position agreements except that the political solution is to be worked out under the ambit of the Indian Constitution of India. Whereas, a sovereign nation has a single flag that signifies its sovereignty and a written constitution to run the country. The GoI has made it clear to the Nagas as a whole that there cannot be the Naga flag paralleling the Indian Nation flag nor can there be overlapping constitution. At best, special constitutional provision can be incorporated in the Constitution of India for the Nagas. Therefore, be it my friend, be it the so-called Global Naga Forum, the Naga Hoho, the NSF or be it the Chairman, UDA or the Core Committee on Naga Political Issue, better not be so obsessed with what is not realistic and unattainable. Parroting after the two agenda of NSCN(IM) is nothing more than pampering and laced with the intention of how to delay the solution or how to sabotage it in the guise of speaking for a higher political status.
The UDA has been so obsessed with the Chief Minister of Assam Mr. Himanta Biswa Sarma perhaps believing that the latter has the magic wand by which the BJP leaders in Delhi can be hoodwinked to dance according to the drumbeats of the UDA leaders in regard to Naga political issue. Indeed certain amount of confusion and anxiety were created by the hobnob of the Assam CM with the UDA and yet the much hyped about the last visit of the Assam C.M. to Dimapur became a damp squib. Consequently, Mr. Himanta rightly snubbed his sycophants during his visit to Diphu when he said that Dimapur and Kohima do not have what infrastructures Diphu has. What a stronger smack of indictment can the UDA leaders expect, as deserved, from a neighbor on whom they pinned all their hope and they almost worship him. Next, the UDA Chairman can further advise his Govt. to seek the help from the Manipur Chief Minister Mr. N. Biren Singh who too possibly has the same magic wand over the BJP top brasses. Mr. Biren may also prescribe similar dosage for UDA in relation to other inter-State issues. On 29.6.2022, the local paper published the reaction of the Chief Minister of Nagaland to a question posed by media in regard to an earlier statement of the WC, 7 NNPGs asking the State Govt. to confine its activities to governance and leave the Naga political issue to the Naga political negotiators, to which the CM stated that “as elected representatives of the people and as politicians, the State Govt. has to talk for Naga political solution.” Further he said, “We represent the people and we are politicians…. if we don’t talk politics who will talk and who will represent us.” Will the Chairman, UDA convey it to his Chief Minister to accept that there exists dichotomy between the role of the political negotiators and the role of the facilitators. That being the reality, there cannot be overlapping negotiations. The UDA in general and its Core Committee in particular are the facilitators having the liberty to talk within the given parameters only for promotion of the po-
litical process but not otherwise. Any facilitator attempting to overshadow the political negotiator is indeed against the spirit of facilitation and detrimental too. It is unnecessary for one to be provoked by the ethical truth. The constitutional truth is that the State election to Nagaland Legislative Assembly (NLA) is not the Naga National Movement, and therefore the 60 MLAs are not the Naga National cadres except that they have taken personal oaths to remain the allegiant Members of the NLA under the Constitution of India. Secondly, the 60 MLAs have no ceasefire so signed with the Govt. of India (GoI). Thirdly, the NLA is not having political negotiation on the Naga political issue with the GoI. Fourthly, the moment the ongoing political negotiations between the GoI and the Naga negotiators, namely, NSCN(IM) and WC, 7 NNPGs are officially handled by the Core Committee of UDA, the Naga political status will eventually be reduced to a mere law and order problem. I hope that the Chairman, UDA and his colleagues do appreciate the recognition of the political status of the Nagas by the GoI and therefore will in no way resort to downgrade our political status with undue indulgence directly or indirectly. The facilitation of the Core Committee on Naga political issue of UDA is expected to be transparent and wholesome. On the contrary, it is observed that there seems to be lack of oneness amongst the 60 MLAs on facilitation. I am sure there are members who are genuinely facilitating the expeditious solution. Yet, there are members who talk for solution but actively working to sabotage solution. The anti-solution elements are trying its best to scuttle the popular voice of the people for solution by creating divisions and syndicates. The contours are becoming more prominent after everyday. It is therefore imperative that while the Chairman, UDA is advising the people to get the particles rid off from their eyes, he and his colleagues may have to remove the sizeable specks from their eyes first. with cr ude oil, which was trading close to $115 per barrel, much above historical average prices. This is amid an expected rise in demand for paper from all quarters. New sessions at schools and colleges are set to begin and will fuel the demand for paper. Meanwhile, the plastic ban will only add to the demand. Amid the high demand, paper mills have hiked prices to pass on s o a r i n g r aw m a t e r i a l costs, thus keeping their margins intact while shoring up revenue. Mills have instituted at least two hikes in the current year, with prices more than doubling from Rs 45-50 pre-covid to around Rs 100 now. Industry executives don’t see prices coming down anytime soon unless raw material costs reduce. “As long as input costs remain at that level, paper prices will have low respite,” said Mehta Analyst take Most analysts and money managers are bull-
ish on the paper industry. JK Paper is the top holding of some smallcapfocused portfolio management service (PMS) funds. Mutual funds hold nearly 9 percent of Andhra Paper — a third of the total public holding, as of the latest shareholding data. However, there are also some who are sceptical and want to wait for clarity before moving. “This (ban) has been positive news for the paper industry as the opportunity to replace single-use plastic with paper is huge. However, currently, India lags the infrastructure to entirely replace single-use plastic,” said Arijit Malakar, Head of Research – Retail, Ashika Group. Divam Shar ma, Founder at Green Portfolio, a PMS provider, acknowledged that the ban is a positive for the paper industry. However, he added that the quantum of the expected rise in the top line is not significant. Shubham Raj (As published in Moneycontrol)
What we can learn from Finland’s education system
F
inland is known for its phenomenonbased approach to education which it introduced in its curriculum reform in 2016 with the aim of transforming and not just educating. With the motto of establishing a collaborative approach, this type of learning aimed at involving students in their studies by working in groups. Now the bigger question is what is phenomenonbased learning? This type of learning comes with the benefit of approaching a subject, not like a subject at all. Students are taught a phenomenon through different approaches. It could be mathematically, scientifically, politically, and so on. Students lear n to work in groups which promote team-work, encourage efficiency in communication and to solve problems in a constructive manner. They talk about technology, global warming, sustainability, development, etc. in a manner that prepares them for life and not just for exams. Think about a school where one wouldn’t have to run in the rat race; a school where homework means interesting projects and not mugging up the syllabus; a school that does not restrict its syllabus with particular subjects but teaches everything; a school that focuses on problem-solving and is dedicated to a practical approach. The question is, will this work in India? More importantly, is our country ready to accept such changes and if yes, what would it require to bring such a transformation? Experts believe, this is not a day’s work but requires a systematic change. It is a process. It needs to sink in. It needs to evolve. That is what any major transformation would require if the desired effect is a long-term one. Given the structure of our education system, what needs to be fixed first is the mindset of people. Teachers, students, and parents need to get used to the idea because it must be a collaborative fixing. Before things don’t pan out as envisioned and ideas fail, it is necessary for our policymakers to concentrate more on
the loopholes that follow with such revolutionary changes. Looking on the brighter side, some amazing facts about Finland’s education system could stand as a great example for our country. Children in Finland do not start schooling before the age of seven. ‘Charity begins at home’ – seems the Finnish strictly follow this. For the initial few years, there is no grading system for students. There is no concept of a topper or a failure in their schools. The interesting part is, students are asked to leave their shoes open before entering their school premises. Also, they are asked to address their teachers by their first names. These are done to ensure that pupils can feel relaxed in school and are mentally unburdened while lear ning. And yet discipline remains their core principle. The schools in Finland are independent of political pressure and a great amount of trust is placed on the principals as they run schools. They have a free and compulsor y education system for all. Charging fee is illegal in Finland. This is so much in contrast to how even pre-schooling policy is rigid in our country. Students enjoy the liberty to build their career around their interests which is highly supported by the Finnish schools through capacity-building, frequent counselling, etc. Most importantly, teaching is a much-respected profession in Finland, and rank no less than medical or engineering. They’re highly paid and teachers require being at least Master degree holders for being eligible in the profession. For such kind of system to work in India, teaching quality needs to be regulated. To impact lives, teachers must first refine the ability to research deeply, learn, and embrace innovation. In contrast to a system where students are evaluated on the basis of their memory and recall power, Finland’s education model definitely is a rebellion, but a worthy one. Shreya Ghosh

MUMBAI, JUL 4 (PTI): A court here on Monday issued a bailable warrant against Shiv Sena MP Sanjay Raut after he failed to appear before it in connection with a defamation complaint filed by former BJP MP Kirit Somaiya’s wife Medha Somaiya. The Sewri metropolitan magistrate’s court had last month issued a process (summons) against Raut, asking him to appear before it on July 4. However, neither Raut nor his lawyers were present in the court on Monday, Medha’s lawyer

NEW DELHI, JUL 4 (PTI): India’s macroeconomic fundamentals are strong to deal with global challenges and the central government is committed to stick to the fiscal deficit target of 6.4 per cent of the GDP for the current fiscal, sources said on Monday. The government is taking steps to deal with the spiralling crude oil prices in the international market, the sources said. India is 85 per cent dependent on imports to meet its crude oil needs and a weaker rupee makes imports costlier. Commodity prices, including of crude oil, are ruling high due to the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war and has led to inflationary pressures across countries, including India. The gover nment is committed to stick to 6.4 per cent fiscal deficit target, the sources said, adding that steps are being taken to address situation arising out of rising crude oil prices.

Societies (PACS) over the next five years with a budget outlay of Rs 2,516 crore in order to improve efficiency, transparency and accountability in their operations. The scheme, approved by the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, will also facilitate PACS to diversify their business and undertake multiple activities and services. At present, the majority of PACS have not computerised their operation and still functioning manually resulting in inefficiency and trust deficit. PACS constitute the lowest tier of the threetier short-term cooperative credit in the country comprising 13 crore farmers as its members. At present, there are 63,000 PACS in the country and the Centre has a target to set up 3 lakh PACS by 2025.

NEW DELHI, JUL 4 (PTI): The Centre has proposed to allow primary agriculture credit societies (PACS) to undertake activities like dealership of petroleum products, running PDS shops, and developing hospital and educational institutions, in addition to their regular functions. In this regard, the Ministry of Cooperation has floated a draft ‘Model Bylaws of PACS’ on which it has invited suggestions from the state governments and other stakeholders by July 19. The existing framework does not allow PACS to diversify in other areas apart from their core business. The draft model bylaws propose that PACS should be allowed to work as Bank Mitras and common service centres (CSCs), provide cold storage and godown facilities, set up PDS

US: Shot that killed journalist likely fired from Israelis WA S H I N G TO N, J U L 4 (AP): US officials have concluded that gunfire from Israeli positions likely killed Al-Jazeera journalist Shireen Abu Akleh but that there was “no reason to believe” her shooting was intentional, the State Department said Monday. The finding, in a statement from State Department spokesman Ned Price, came after what the U.S. said was inconclusive tests by independent ballistics experts under U.S. oversight of the bullet fragment recovered from Abu Akleh’s body. “Ballistic experts determined the bullet was badly damaged, which prevented a clear conclusion” as to who fired shot, Price said in the statement. Abu Akleh, a veteran correspondent and U.S and Palestinian citizen who was well known throughout the Arab world, was shot and killed while covering an Israeli military raid on May 11 in the Jenin refugee camp in the occupied West Bank. Palestinian eyewitnesses, including her crew, say Israeli troops killed her and that there were no militants in the immediate vicinity.

Luhansk governor Serhii Haidai said on Monday that Ukrainian forces had retreated from the city to avoid being surrounded. “There was a risk of Lysychansk encirclement,” Haidai told the Associated Press, adding that Ukrainian troops could have held on for a few more weeks but would have potentially paid too high a price. “We managed to do centralized withdrawal and evacuate all injured,” Haidai said. “We took back all the equipment, so from this point withdrawal was organized well.” The Ukrainian General Staff said Russian forces were now focusing their efforts on pushing toward the line of Siversk, Fedorivka
Myanmar hosts 1st regional meeting since army takeover BANGKOK, JUL 4 (AP): Myanmar’s military government on Monday hosted the first high-level regional meeting since the army took power last year with China’s Foreign Minister Wang Yi and counterparts from Mekong Delta nations. State broadcaster MRTV reported that Wang met with his colleagues from Myanmar, Laos, Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam at the Lancang-Mekong Cooperation group meeting held under the theme “Solidarity for Peace and Prosperity” in the central city of Bagan, a UNESCO World Heritage site. The TV report showed Wang and the other foreign ministers bumping elbows in a show of solidarity before the start of the meeting, but did not provide further details. The g rouping is a Chinese-led initiative that includes the countries of the Mekong Delta, a potential source of regional tensions due to an increasing number of hydroelectric projects that are altering the flow and raising concerns of ecological damage. Searchers rescue 4th person from China ship, 12 bodies found HONG KONG, JUL 4 (AP): Rescue teams searching for missing crew members from a Chinese engineering ship that sank over the weekend saved a fourth person on Monday and recovered 12 bodies, Chinese maritime authorities said. Officials said the crew member rescued by a Chinese navy ship on Monday was in stable condition. Three other members of the 30-person crew were rescued on Saturday. The bodies were found about 50 nautical miles (90 kilometers) southwest of the area in which the vessel Fujing 001 sank, authorities in the southeastern province of Guangdong said. Officials were attempting to identify the bodies. The search for the remaining crew members was continuing. The China-registered floating crane was involved in building several offshore wind farms. It had been sheltering from tropical storm Chaba, but dragged its anchor and the anchor chain then broke, maritime authorities said. The vessel then

The Russian army has also intensified its shelling of the key Ukrainian strongholds of Sloviansk and Kramatorsk, deeper in Donetsk. On Sunday, six people, including a 9-year-old girl, were killed in the Russian shelling of Sloviansk and another 19 people were wounded, according to local authorities. Kramatorsk also came under fire on Sunday. The ship sank about 300 kilometers (180 miles) southwest of Hong Kong. Authorities said the vessel was close to the center of the storm, making rescue operations difficult. Hong Kong sent two fixed-wing aircraft and four helicopters on Saturday for the rescue effort. The search continued Monday, though Hong Kong authorities said the chances of rescuing the remaining crew members alive were slim. Elsewhere in China, eight people sheltering from a rainstorm in Shijiazhuang, the capital of the northern province of Hebei, were killed Saturday when a decorative building structure fell from about 12 meters (40 feet), the official Xinhua New Agency said. Another person who was also hit by the structure was hospitalised in stable condition, it said.
built 10 dams along the upper stretch of the Mekong, the part it calls the Lancang. China has been criticized for the dams upstream on the Mekong River which affect water levels and downstream fisheries that are important to several Southeast Asian nations’ economies. Military government spokesman Maj. Gen. Zaw Min Tun said last Friday that the ministers were expected to sign several agreements. He said that the presence of the foreign ministers was a recognition of Myanmar’s sovereignty and its government. China is Myanmar’s biggest trading partner and an old ally. Beijing has invested billions of dollars in Myanmar’s mines, oil and gas pipelines and other infrastructure and is its major arms supplier, together like Russia. China says it follows a policy of non-interference in other countries’ affairs.
ing Donetsk. The briefing said the conflict in Donbas has been “grinding and attritional,” and is unlikely to change in the coming weeks. While the Russian army has a massive advantage in firepower, military analysts say that it doesn’t have any significant superiority in the number of troops. That means Moscow lacks resources for quick land gains and can only advance slowly, relying on heavy artillery and rocket barrages to soften Ukrainian defenses. Ru s s i a n P r e s i d e n t Vladimir Putin has made capturing the entire Donbas a key goal in his war in Ukraine, now in its fifth month. Moscow-backed separatists in Donbas have battled Ukrainian forces since 2014 when they declared independence from Kyiv after the Russian annexation of Ukraine’s Crimea. Russia formally recognized the self-proclaimed republics days before its Feb. 24 invasion of Ukraine. In his nightly video address, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy acknowledged the withdrawal, but vowed that Ukrainian forces will fight
their way back. “If the command of our army withdraws people from certain points of the front where the enemy has the greatest fire superiority, in particular this applies to Lysychansk, it means only one thing: We will return thanks to our tactics, thanks to the increase in the supply of modern weapons,” Zelenskyy said. Since failing to take Kyiv and other areas in Ukraine’s northeast early in the war, Russia has focused on Donbas, unleashing fierce shelling and engaging in house-to-house combat that devastated cities in the region. Russia’s invasion has also devastated Ukraine’s agricultural sector, disrupting supply chains of seed and fertilizer needed by Ukrainian farmers and blocking the export of grain, a key source of revenue for the country. In its Monday intelligence report, Britain’s defense ministry pointed to the Russian blockade of the key Ukrainian port of Odesa, which has severely restricted grain exports. They predicted that Ukraine’s agricultural exports would reach only 35% of the 2021 total this year as a result.
I S L A M A BA D, J U L 4 (PTI): Pakistan Army chief General Qamar Javed Bajwa has issued fresh directions to his commanders and officers, including from the ISI, to stay away from politics after leaders of ousted prime minister Imran Khan-led party alleged that some officials of the country’s intelligence agency were trying to “manipulate” the upcoming by-elections in Punjab, according to a media report on Monday. Pakistan Army had earlier said that it has nothing to do with politics and it would remain apolitical in the future as well. Chief of the Army Staff (COAS) General Bajwa has issued fresh directions to all his commanders and key officers to stay away from politics and avoid interacting with politicians, The News newspaper reported. These directions have been given in the wake of Imran Khan-led Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf ’s propaganda against the military establishment alleging certain ISI officials of trying to manipulate the upcoming by-elections in Punjab to the disadvantage of the party,
Gen. Qamar Javed Bajwa
the report said. Defence sources lament that the ISI sector commander, Lahore, Brigadier Rashid, who is being maligned by the PTI leaders, is not even in Lahore for over a fortnight in connection with some of his professional work in Islamabad. PTI leader and former health minister Punjab Yasmin Rashid recently named the sector commander and alleged him of having been involved in politics to manipulate by-elections in Punjab. Former foreign minister and Deputy Chairman of PTI Shah Mehmood Qureshi had also alleged that some invisible forces are active to influence the by-elections in the province against the party. Recently, former prime minister Khan also alleged that some of his candidates
have complained to him of receiving telephone calls from unknown numbers. Months back, operatives of the country’s top intelligence agency, the ISI, were strictly directed to stay away from politics. The by-polls on the 20 vacant seats of Punjab Assembly will be held on July 17. Pakistan Army, which has ruled the coup-prone country for more than half of its 73-plus years of existence, has hitherto wielded considerable power in the matters of security and foreign policy. Khan, the 69-year-old cricketer-turned-politician, was voted out of power in April through a no-confidence motion, which he alleges was masterminded by the US with the help of local players over his pursuance of an independent foreign policy. His supporters used social media to target the army for doing nothing to save his government. Khan is the only Pakistani prime minister to be ousted in a no-confidence motion in Parliament. He was replaced by Shehbaz Sharif of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz.
Motive likely not terror-related in ‘brutal’ Danish shooting COPENHAGEN, JUL 4 (AP): A gunman who killed three people when he opened fire in a crowded shopping mall acted alone and apparently selected his victims at random, Danish police said on Monday, all but ruling out that the attack was an “act of terrorism.” Authorities filed preliminary charges of murder and attempted murder against a 22-year-old Danish man, who will be held for 24 days in a secure mental health facility while authorities investigate the crime, prosecutor Søren Harbo told reporters. Police have said the man was known to mental health service without elaborating. Police have not identified a motive for Sunday’s attack inside one of Scandinavia’s biggest shopping centers. The suspect, carrying a rifle and knife, was quickly arrested, and Copenhagen chief police inspector Søren Thomassen said the man also had access to another gun. He said the firearms were obtained illegally but gave no further details. “It was the worst possible nightmare,” Dan-

Date : 04-07-2022 This press rejoinder is directed to a press release “Explusion & Release of Shri Yanglongse Kachari from the foster son (Tsuthsaru) of Shri Tsithrongse Head GB on 26.06.2022.” published in Nagaland Post, dated, Sunday, July 3, 2022. In this regard, it may be clarified that I, Shri Yanglongse original name Kamleswar Basumatary Kachari accompanied by my wife Nirjun Kachari, later called by nickname Lichola and daughters Ms Rupohi and Ms Bobita, later called by nicknames Thsapila and Alila came to the site of the present Tsithrongse village in June, 1986 and settled there. Thus, I was also one of the four joint conveners in the establishment of Tsithrongse village. It may be mentioned that since I was the only Non-Naga tribal in the village, on the suggestion of Mr. Tsithrongse Sangtam I have been named by Sangtam tribe name ‘Yanglongse’, and I paid allegiance to the said Tsithrongse as my protector in times of necessities since my family was all alone in the Naga Tribal Village. It is to be mentioned that at the time Tsithrongse village was established, I was already an adult man having my family and brought up the family without depending on anybody. Initially, I and my family lived in Diezephe village and on migration from there established Tsithrongse village which is bordered with Diezephe village. Thus, at no point of time, neither me nor any of my family members called foster parents to anybody nor anybody has brought up me and any members of my family. Hence, the question of foster son or foster father as claimed by Mr.Tsithrongse does not arise. The claims of Mr. Tsithrongse that I am his foster son is absolutely false and baseless, and the said claims are directed only with the motive of forcibly grabbing my landed properties in the village with all impunity. That as one of the village founders of Tsithrongse village, I have been allotted shares of plots of land both residential sites and cultivation/farming plots at par with other village founders including Mr. Tsithrongse without any discrimination, and thus all my plots and residential sites are those shares of distributions among the villagers from time to time. Hence, the question of any land permitted to me and my family by Tsithrongse to stay and cultivate does not arise at all and the same are of blatant lie. It may be mentioned that subject only to the rules and regulations of the village, I have every right to deal with my landed properties including alienation of transfer of ownership, and Mr. Tsithrongse has nothing to do with the exercise on my lawful rights over my properties. Hence, the purported act of my expulsion by the said Mr. Tsithrongse is only to grab my landed properties illegally taking advantage of the fact that ethnically I am the far minority person in the village. A person in a white DNA suit is taken away by police, near the Field’s shopping center, after a shooting, Copenhagen. (AP)
ish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen said Monday, calling the attack “unusually brutal.” The three killed were a 17-year-old boy and a 17-year-old girl, both Danes, and a 47-year-old Russian man, according to Thomassen. Four more people were hospitalized with gunshot wounds and were in critical but stable
condition. In all 30 people were hurt, most in the panicked stampede after the shots rang out at the Field’s shopping center, on the outskirts of the Danish capital. Gun violence is relatively rare in Denmark. The last shooting on this scale was in February 2015, when a 22-year-old man was killed in a shootout with police after an attack
in the capital that left two people dead and five police officers wounded. The suspect, who cannot be named by court order, was brought before a judge Monday in a packed courtroom to face three preliminary charges of murder and four of attempted murder. That’s a step short of formal charges but allow authorities to keep a person in custody during an investigation. The judge asked media to leave and held the detention hearing behind closed doors. It wasn’t immediately clear how the suspect pleaded. He will remain in custody until July 28, police said. Thomassen said police had no indication that anyone helped the man. “There is nothing in our investigation, or the documents we have re-
viewed, or the things we have found, or the witnesses’ statements we have gotten, that can substantiate that this is an act of terrorism,” said Thomassen, who previously identified the man as an “ethnic Dane,” a phrase typically used to mean someone is white. Danish broadcaster TV2 published a grainy photo of the alleged gunman, a man wearing kneelength shorts, a vest or sleeveless shirt, and holding what appeared to be a rifle in his right hand. “He seemed very violent and angry,” eyewitness Mahdi Al-Wazni told TV2. “He spoke to me and said it (the rifle) isn’t real as I was filming him. He seemed very proud of what he was doing.” Images from the scene showed people running out of the mall, where people laid flowers on Monday.

POKROVSK (UKRAINE), JUL 4 (AP): Russian President Vladimir Putin on Monday declared victory in the eastern Ukrainian region of Luhansk, one day after Ukrainian forces withdrew from their last remaining bulwark of resistance in the province. Russia’s Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu reported to Putin in a televised meeting Monday that Russian forces had taken control of Luhansk, which together with the neighboring Donetsk province makes up Ukraine’s industrial heartland of Donbas. Shoigu told Putin that “the operation” was completed on Sunday after Russian troops overran the city of Lysychansk, the last stronghold of Ukrainian forces in Luhansk. Putin, in turn, said that the military units “that took part in active hostilities and achieved success, victory” in Luhansk, “should rest, increase their combat capabilities.” Putin’s declaration came as Russian forces tried to press their offensive deeper into eastern Ukraine after the Ukrainian military confirmed that its forces had withdrawn from Lysychansk on Sunday.

Women More Susceptible Than Men to Long COVID
W
omen are far more likely than men to suffer from long COVID, according to a broad new research review. The review, published June 21 in the journal Current Medical Research and Opinion, included 1.3 million patients, and revealed women were 22% more likely to develop persistent symptoms after a COVID infection. For women, lingering symptoms after a COVID infection included fatigue; ear, nose and throat issues; as well as mood disorders like depression. They also had respiratory symptoms, and neurological, skin, gastrointestinal and rheumatic disorders. In contrast, men with long COVID were more likely to have endocrine disorders, including diabetes and kidney issues. “Knowledge about
fundamental sex differences underpinning the clinical manifestations, disease progression, and health outcomes of COVID-19 is crucial for the identification and rational design of effective therapies and public health interventions that are inclusive of and sensitive to the potential differential treatment needs of both sexes,” the authors said in a journal news release. Led by Shirley Sylvester, senior medical
director for women’s health at Johnson & Johnson in New Brunswick, N.J., the researchers noted that differences in how men’s and women’s immune systems function could be an important factor. “Females mount more rapid and robust innate and adaptive immune responses, which can protect them from initial infection and severity,” Sylvester and colleagues wrote. “However, this same difference
can render females more vulnerable to prolonged autoimmune-related diseases.” The review included data from papers published between December 2019 and June 2021. In all, just 35 of the more than 640,600 papers broke down data by gender with enough detail about symptoms to effectively compare differences in the way men and women respond to the disease. Other, more recent studies have examined the issue. More studies have examined sex differences in hospitalization, ICU admission, ventilation support and death rates. But researchers said symptoms and long-term damage to the body have not been studied enough by sex. “Sex differences in outcomes have been reported during previous coronavirus outbreaks,” the researchers said. “Therefore, differences in out-
comes between females and males infected with SARS-CoV-2 could have been anticipated. Unfortunately, most studies did not evaluate or report granular data by sex, which limited sex-specific clinical insights that may be impacting treatment.” The authors said data broken down by sex should be made available even if that was not a study’s primary objective because the information could be of value to others. Analyzing that information is a key to addressing disparate disease outcomes, they said. Researchers noted that women in professions such as nursing and education may be at higher risk of exposure to SARS-CoV-2. There may also be genderbased differences in access to care that could affect treatment and lead to more complications. By Cara Murez HealthDay Reporter

The bowlers set it up for the tourist by dismissing Sri Lanka for 173, and after that, Smriti Mandhana’s stroke-filled 94 off 83 balls and Shafali Verma’s run-aball 71 paved the way for the convincing win. The duo’s partnership

Adding to the visitor’s confidence was the fact that it also triumphed in the preceding three-match T20I series. After winning the toss, Indian skipper Harmanpreet Kaur asked

NEW DELHI, JUL 4 ( AG E N C I E S ) : I n d i a captain Harmanpreet Kaur is set to return to the Melbourne Renegades, with last summer’s player of the tournament signing up for the upcoming season of Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL), the club announced on Monday. Kaur will reprise the No.4 role she dominated during her first season in red in the previous WBBL season, which saw her score 406 runs at a strike rate of 130.96, including three half-centuries. Kaur also picked up 15 wickets with her off-spin to propel the Melbourne club to second spot on the table at the end of the regular season and a subsequent return to the finals.
NEW DELHI, JUL 4 (PTI): The Delhi High Court Monday refused to stay an order by which veteran sports administrator Narinder Dhruv Batra was restrained from discharging any function as Indian Olympic Association (IOA) president. A bench of Chief Justice Satish Chandra Sharma and Justice Subramonium Prasad issued notice on an appeal by Batra challenging a single judge’s June 24 order which was passed in a contempt petition filed by Olympian and Hockey World Cup winner Aslam Sher Khan. The bench, which asked Batra’s counsel as to how the appeal was maintainable, issued notice to the Centre and Khan on the plea and listed it for further hearing on July 26. When advocate Shyel Trehan, appearing for Batra, sought a stay on the order passed by the single judge, the division bench said, “No we are not staying it. Only on a technical issue we have issued a notice”. The single judge, in
Narinder Dhruv Batra
its June 24 order, had said, “the respondent no. 1 / proposed contemnor (Batra) is restrained to further discharge any function as President, IOA. In view of the communication dated June 3, 2022, Anil Khanna, Senior Vice President will take over the duties and responsibilities of the President. The Senior Vice President shall also perform any other tasks/ functions as directed by the President, the Executive Council, or the General Meeting”. The contempt petition is listed for further hearing on August 3. On May 25, Batra was removed as IOA chief after the high court struck down the post of ‘life member’ in Hockey India, courtesy of
which he had contested and won the apex body elections back in 2017. Khan has filed the contempt petition alleging that Batra was willfully disobeying and deliberately defying the May 25 order of the court by not resigning from the post of IOA president. Senior advocate Mohit Mathur and lawyer Va n s h d e e p D a l m i a , representing Khan, had submitted that Batra has been removed from the position held by him in the National Sports Federation (NSF) by virtue of the May 25 judgement and he committed contempt of the court by continuing as President of IOA and cannot be allowed to further perpetuate contempt. In a petition filed by Khan, the high court had passed the verdict in May that the position of life member and life president was “illegal” since they were not in consonance with the National Sports Code, and installed a threemember Committee of Administrators (CoA) to run Hockey India.
T20: Powell powers West Indies to 35-run win Vs B’desh ROSEAU (DOMINICA), JUL 4 (IANS): West Indies fans enjoyed a commanding performance from their team in the second T20 International, as they br ushed aside Bangladesh by 35 runs at Windsor Park to take a 1-0 lead in the three-match series on Monday (IST). With international cricket returning to the island for the first time since 2017, spectators packed the stands and they witnessed a fine innings from by Rovman Powell (61 not out off 28 balls) which set up the matchwinning total of 193/5 off 20 overs. Opener Brandon King too scored a superb 57 from 43 balls as the hosts move into the final game on July 7 eyeing a clean sweep after the first T20I was washed out. King played the anchor role with two half-century partnerships -74 for the third wicket with Pooran (34) and 63 for the fourth wicket with Powell. King hit seven boundaries and a six, while Pooran hit three fours and a six in a 30-ball knock. Then ‘Man of the Match’ Powell entered and transformed the innings. He entertained
the crowd with two fours and six massive sixes as he raced to his fourth T20I half century off just 20 balls in the 18th over. West Indies made a remarkable 74 runs from the last five overs. “For us as a batting group, we want to take the game from the bowlers and try to put the bowlers under pressure early in the over,” said captain Nicholas Pooran. “Today was the start of this whole template and I thought we did it well but there’s a lot of work to put in it. We just need to trust this process a bit more and everyone just needs to keep digging deep for the team.” In reply to West Indies’ big total, Bangladesh struggled from some superb new-ball bowling from Obed McCoy and finished on 158/6 from their 20 overs. Shakib Al Hasan top-scored with 69 not out from 52 balls to reach the milestone of 2,000 runs in his 98th T20 International. Leg-spinner Hayden Walsh Jr was again on song and conceded just 23 runs from his four overs. He did a great job along with pacers McCoy (2/37) and

Romario Shepherd (2/28) who picked up crucial wickets to secure the win. The third game of the series will be played in Guyana. BRIEF SCORES: West Indies 193/5 in 20 overs (Brandon King

SILVERSTONE, JUL 4 (IANS): Chinese F1 driver Zhou Guanyu said he was saved by the protective halo device during a dramatic high-speed shunt on Lap 1 of Sunday’s British Grand Prix. Having been tagged by George Russell just after the start, Zhou’s car flipped and skidded upside down along the tarmac and gravel at high speed, with the force of the impact seeing the Alfa Romeo vault the outer barrier and come to rest against the inner-catch fencing. In worrying scenes, the Alfa Romeo’s roll hoop seemingly disintegrated upon impact with the track, meaning the halo was the only part of the car protecting Zhou’s helmet from contact with the tarmac as the car hurtled towards the barriers, Xinhua reports. The severity of the accident meant there was much concern for Zhou’s condition, with Russell notably running from his stricken Mercedes to check on the Chinese driver. Though Zhou was unable to immediately extricate himself from his
Sri Lanka to bat first in favourable conditions for the bowlers. The host soon found itself in all sorts of trouble as pacer Renuka Singh Thakur was on point with her lengths from the word go. The 26-year-old reigned supreme with the ball, with a career-best four for 28, rattling the Sri Lankan top-order with three quick strikes. Even as wickets fell at regular intervals, lower-order batter Ama Kanchana held fort for the host with an unbeaten 47 off 83 balls. Seasoned offspinner Deepti Sharma’s two wickets off the last two balls helped India bowl out the Lankans. “We have been talking about long partnerships. We discussed that we need to give 100 percent. T h e p a r t n e r s h i p wa s outstanding. It is important to have bowling options,” Harmanpreet said after the game. India won the first ODI by four wickets and will look to complete a 3-0 sweep when it meets the home team in the final match on Thursday.

Root, Bairstow put Eng on top; need 119 runs to win Elorda Cup: Alfiya stuns former champ to BIRMINGHAM, JUL 4 (PTI): Joe Root and Jonny Bairstow put England on course for a groundbreaking run chase against I n d i a d e s p i t e Ja s p r i t Bumrah’s brilliance on day four of the rescheduled fifth Test, setting up a fitting series finale here on Monday. Skipper Bumrah brought India back in the game with wickets on either side of the lunch break after England openers Alex Lees (56 off 65) and Zak Crawley (46 off 76) finally found form and shared a 107-run stand chasing a record 378-run target. From 107 for loss, it soon became 109 for three before the dangerous duo of Root (76 batting off 112) and Bairstow (72 batting off 87) frustrated the Indians with a commanding 150run partnership off just 197 balls. England were 259 for three at stumps on day four, needing a very gettable 119 runs for a series levelling victory. India could have made England chase in excess of 400 on day five if it was not for some poor shot selection. After starting the day at 125 for three, India were all out for 245 in the second innings. India had very little going for themselves in the final session barring with the first two overs.

Bumrah had Ollie Pope caught behind before Lees was run out after Root went for a single that was not for the taking. After that, it was Root and Bairstow show as they scored runs at will. Under-fire England openers Lees and Crawley had also displayed a lot of positive intent to take England to 107 for one at tea. India managed to get the breakthrough towards the end of session with Bumrah cleaning up Zak Crawley (46 off 76), who misjudged a leave, when a delivery darted in
from length. India could only consume 8.5 overs after lunch. The tail did not wag compared to first innings but specialist batters gifting their wickets away prevented India from getting a lead in excess of 400. Chasing a record target, England came out all guns blazing and raced to 53 for no loss in nine overs with Lees collecting two fours off Ravindra Jadeja in his very first over. He stepped out of the crease to hit the first one past mid-off while the second came from a reverse sweep. Crawley got going
with a flick towards square leg off Jasprit Bumrah before a crisp straight drive off Mohammad Shami. Lees got to his second Test fifty in the following over with a classy back foot punch off Mohammad Siraj.Siraj resor ted to bowling with a scrambled seam but that also did not put the openers in any sort of discomfort. Earlier, India gifted easy wickets to England but Rishabh Pant’s halfcentury allowed them to extend their lead to 361 runs by lunch session. Over night batters
Cheteshwar Pujara (66 off 168) and Pant (57 off 86) made a confident start. Pujara got going with a back-foot punch and a flick off James Anderson for consecutive boundaries. Pujara, who had reached the 50-run mark on Sunday, was hardly troubled by the English pacers. Pant and Pujara’s job was made easier with Ben Stokes giving three overs to part-timer Joe Root after start of play. The Saurashtra batter however contributed to his own downfall by but cutting a short and wide ball off Stuart Broad straight to backward point. It is his pet shot but couldn’t keep it down for a change. Shreyas Iyer (19 off 26) joined Pant in the middle and after a playing a few shots, fell to the short ball yet again. England laid the trap for Iyer and he fell right into it by pulling a short ball straight to midwicket. Pant completed his fifty with a tickle off the pads, becoming the first Indian wicket-keeper to score a hundred and a halfcentury in an overseas Test. After sweeping Jack Leach for a boundary, Pant went for a reverse pull in the following over but was caught at first slip by Joe Root, leaving India at 198 for six.

Women’s Hockey WC: India hold England to 1-1 draw Wimbledon: Kyrgios shrugs off injury to reach quarterfinals
A M S T E LV E E N (NETHERLANDS), JUL 4 (IANS): India and England lived up to the billing as they produced a high-voltage campaign opener in their Pool B match here at the FIH women’s hockey World Cup Spain and Netherlands in the packed Wenger Hockey Stadium, here on Sunday. Goals were scored by Isabelle Petter (9’) and Vandana Katariya (28’) as they helped their respective teams add on a crucial point on the pool table. H o w e v e r, I n d i a looked the better team on the pitch but wasted many chances, including six of the seven penalty corners they earned. Both India and England got off to a rollicking start pushing each other for ball possession and creating space in each other’s circle. England, who had beaten India for the bronze medal at Tokyo Olympic Games. got the first chance when their striker took a

fierce shot on goal but an alert Savita averted early danger with a diving save only minutes into the first quarter. But England were successful in their second attempt when their experienced player Lily Owsley with a total of 182 international caps, set up Isabelle Petter with a fine assist. Petter sent the ball high, pocketing the top of the net to fetch England
that much-needed 1-0 lead in the 9th minute to put pressure on India. Determined to stay on par with England in the game, India kept their calm and worked on their strategy to create chances in the circle. They were awarded a PC in the following minutes but were unlucky as Gurjit Kaur’s drag-flick bounced off the goal post. Despite missing out on a goal, India
remained patient in their approach, building on a good structure and when they were awarded a PC for a foot-foul in the 28th minute, experienced striker Vandana Katariya picked up a splendid rebound off England goalie Maddie Hinge’s pads after Monika had taken a shot from the PC. She deflected the ball perfectly past Hinge to earn India the equaliser and keep the game open in the
second half of the match. Coming back from the ten-minute break, feeling pumped up India upped the pressure on England with potent attacks. They played with speed and dominated the ball possession but England’s defence was rock solid with their experienced custodian Maddie Hinge up to the challenge, making some fine saves and guiding her team’s defence from the back. With no goals scored in the third quarter, the match went down to the ire as both teams fought hard for that elusive lead. Though England created a couple of chances in the D with shots on goal, they were off target on most occasions. I n d i a c o u l d h ave extended the lead in the 56th minute when Neha and Navjot worked inside the D to help Sharmila find a deflection. But Sharmila, unfortunately, could not get her stick on the ball, thus missing out on a great opportunity.
LO N D O N, J U L 4 ( AG E N C I E S / I A N S ) : Nick Kyrgios’ entertaining Wimbledon run continued as he shr ugged off a shoulder injury to beat American Brandon Nakashima and reach his first major quarter-final in seven years. The Australian was more subdued than in his fiery match against Stefanos Tsitsipas, staying largely quiet in a 4-6 6-4 7-6 (7-2) 3-6 6-2 win. Victory came despite needing a medical timeout and regular physio treatment. Kyrgios, 27, will play Chile’s Cristian Garin in the last eight on Wednesday. “It wasn’t anywhere near my best performance level-wise but I’m super happy to get through and I fought really hard,” said Kyrgios, who is ranked 40th in the world. “I’ve played a lot of tennis in the past month and a half and I’m proud of the way I steadied the
ship.” Unseeded Garin, 26, prevented an all-Australian encounter by fighting back from two sets down - and saving two match points in the fifth - to beat 19th seed Alex de Minaur. The world number 43, more of a clay-court specialist, reached his first major quarter-final with a 2-6 5-7 7-6 (7-3) 6-4 7-6 (10-6) victory. Elena Rybakina advanced to the Wimbledon quarterfinals for the first time in her career after a hard-fought 7-5, 6-3 win over Petra Martic of Croatia. It took Rybakina, the
No. 17 seed, one hour and 20 minutes to overcome the world No. 80 Croatian in a match that was tighter than the 7-5, 6-3 scoreline suggested. The 31-yearold Martic recovered from a 0-3 deficit in the first set, claiming four games straight to take a 4-3 lead. But helped by her power hitting, the Kazakhstani recovered to level in the eighth game and secured the 46-minute opener in the 10th game. She will face either Alize Cor net or Ajla To m l j a n o v i c i n t h e quarterfinals.
