the foundation stone for improvement and widening project of the ShillongDawki section of the NH-40 in Shillong. Obser ving that the North Eastern region had the potential to become the “growth engine” of the country, Naidu called for fast-tracking of all the developmental activities and utilization of Central funds for various projects with transparency and accountability. “If we can expedite all projects here without delay or diversion, North Eastern states have the potential to become the growth engines of the country,” Naidu said. Naidu, who also addressed a workshop on “Changing Role of North Eastern Council in the Development of North Eastern Region”, urged the North Eastern Council (NEC) to propel the region on a resurgent phase of accelerated development by quickly resolving issues that have

been impeding its progress. “India’s progress cannot be complete if there is uneven progress in various regions. If the North East region progresses, India progresses. If the region lags behind, India lags behind,” he said He said the NEC can be an effective instrument to bring coherence to these dreams, strategize, plan, catalyze and coordinate the implementation in conjunction with the State governments. “This is the right time to revisit the approaches of NEC as it braces up to meet the challenges of the winds of change that need to be harnessed in the interest of the North Eastern region and its people,” Naidu said, adding that the government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi has embarked on a path of reform in all spheres with a view to improve performance and productivity. Staff Reporter DIMAPUR, OCT 4 (NPN): A training programme on Pradhan Mantri Krishi Sinchayee Yojana (PMKSY) and hi-tech protected cultivation was organised at conference hall SHN, here, on Monday. The programme was organised by district horticulture department with North Bengal floritech partner Watila Longkumer as resource person. At the programme technical session was car-

ried out by the resource person where she spoke on the topic “PMKSY” and “hi-tech protected cultivation”. Watila also spoke on the importance of drip irrigation which she said was the most efficient water and nutrient delivery system for growing crops. She pointed out that delivering water and nutrients directly to the plant’s roots zone, in right amounts at the right time helped the plant get exactly what it needed.

She informed that there were many success stories with the method of drip irrigation where farmers could produce higher yields while saving water and fertilisers, energy and crop protection products. Meanwhile, Watila demonstrated how to use drip irrigation machineries and highlighted the benefits of drip irrigation which included increase in yield, saving up water, more land could be irrigated with water which in turn saved fertilisers use efficiency and the labour was also reduced. Further, she encouraged the farmers to make better use of the methods, to maintain the machineries and to work hard with available resources which were provided by the department free of cost. The programme was followed by an interactive session where beneficiaries cleared doubts related to the machineries and ways to cultivate. The programme was chaired by district horticulture officer, Dimapur Temsu Longkumer.

PDMGDVA to impose ‘no reply, no work’

DIMAPUR: Phek District Maytas-Gayatri Damaged Victim Association (PDMGDVA) Monday resolved to resume the second phase of agitation from October 6 by imposing “no reply, no work”, in the event of the failure of the union of India to file its affidavit-in-opposition before the high court even at the last hour of October 5 on which date the matter was being listed. PDMGDVA convener Pushovoyi Nyekha and general secretary Kuvesa Medeo stated that the decision was taken at the meeting of the association held on Monday.

The association announced that in the first stage of the current agitation for 15 days (October 6-21), no working company/contractor on both Chakhabama-Zunheboto (under Phek District) and Pfutsero-Phek 2 lane roads would be allowed to undertake any work unless pending reply was filed. The association cautioned that it would intensify its agitation as deemed fit after the expiry of 15day agitation and if union of India continued to ignore their protest. For convenience and normal activity of general public, the association has

reconsidered imposition of indefinite road blockade. However, the current agitation would not affect any vehicular movement on the two highways but would only restrain working company/contractors from carrying out their activity on the roads, PDMGDVA stated. Earlier, the association said that it submitted a memorandum to secretary MORTH on August 16 through the state chief secretary who forwarded the letter on August 21 with a request “to kindly issue necessary directives to file the same before September 15 in order to

avoid any untoward situation that may arise as the association has resolved to impose indefinite road blockade…”. The association claimed that the union of India failed again on September 15 when the matter came up before the court and further sought another three weeks’ time which would expire on October 5. Noting that as respondent 1 to the PIL, filing affidavit-in-opposition was mandatory and cannot be averted or overlooked, PDMGDVA asked why union of India was delaying the court process and denying justice to the poor victims?

Protesters block a main road in Imphal during 24-hour total shutdown on Monday. Correspondent IMPHAL, OCT 4: A state wide 24-hour shutdown imposed by “Joint Action Commitee (JAC) Against the Brutal Murder of Abonmai,” paralysed normal life across Manipur. Athuan Abonmai former president of Zeliangrong Baudi (Assam, Manipur and Nagaland) was murdered after being abducted from Tamenglong district on September 22. The shutdown was called to protest against the alleged non-fulfillment of JAC’s key demand –suspension of Tamenglong DC and SP from their service for their negligence, inefficiency

and suspected role of their collusion in facilitating the crime. Shops, markets and commercial establishments remained closed and public and private transport stayed off the road. Attendance in government offices was also thin. Inter-state and interdistrict service passengers service vehicles also suspended their services for the day. The shutdown also had a great impact in other districts of the state as similar situations were reported in the districts. Large numbers of protesters came out on the roads and blocked vehicular

movement. While imposing the shutdown, the protesters blocked the roads with stones, bamboo and logs. As many as 19 major civil society organizations and student bodies, mostly based in the valley areas, extended their support to the total shutdown. JAC stated that even as most of their demands were agreed, the government was yet to concede the key demand of JAC - suspension of the Tamenglong DC and SP. The JAC also threatened to continue other democratic forms of protests until final settlement is arrived and justice delivered in the case.

The Assam Pradesh Congress Committee had last week slapped a showcause notice on the MLA for “communally provocative” statements ahead of the bypolls in the state, and sought a reply from him within three days. On Sunday, the Assam Congress Legislature Party (ACLP) unanimously recommended that the APCC take disciplinary action against Ahmed for

“repeatedly violating party discipline”, a release said. Several organisations, including the All Assam Students Union (AASU) and Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM), have filed complaints against the legislator for his remarks. The state’s ruling alliance partner, Asom Gana Parishad, born out of the Assam agitation, had organised protests at various places, including Dibrugarh, Barpeta, Mangaldoi, Dhemaji, Tezpur, Biswanath, Nalbari, Bongaigaon, Majuli and Morigaon, and burnt effigies of the Congress MLA. An eviction drive held last month at Gorukhuti in Darrang district passed off peacefully on the first day, but was conducted amid stiff resistance by locals on the second day, leaving two dead in police firing, including a 12-year-old boy. Over 20 people were injured in the melee. Ahm ed re por tedly made the “communal” remarks while reacting to assertions by some leaders of the BJP-led ruling alliance that the alleged encroachers in Sipajhar area of Darrang district had “killed” eight people in 1983 during the six-year-long Assam agitation.

IMPHAL, OCT 4: The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) on Monday claimed that Manipur’s Bishnupur district was the first in Southeast Asia to deploy drones to deliver Covid -19 vaccine. Union minister for health and family welfare Mansukh Mandaviya launched the initiative through virtual mode from Nirman Bhawan, New Delhi. The Bishnupur district administration and district health society in association with Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR)

Launching of delivery of COVID-19 vaccine using drones in Manipur s Bishnupur district on Monday. organized the launching function for delivery of vaccine by Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) or drone at Loukoipat of the district. IED blast averted in NPP’s office Shillong M’laya BJP, Cong declare candidates for by-polls Correspondent SHILLONG, OCT 4: On a day of visit of Vice President, M Venkaiah Naidu to the Meghalaya capital, the Bomb Squad of the State police on Monday averted a bomb blast at Lower Lachaumiere, in the heart of the city in front of the office of the ruling National People’s Party (NPP). Police said a 2.5 kg Improvised Explosive Devices (IED) bomb made with commercial gelatine sticks was

planted in-front of the gate of the NPP office here, but did not explode due to erroneous wiring. However, a team of the bomb detection and disposal squad (BDDS) safely defused the explosive. Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC) Genera lSecretary Sainkupar Nongtraw has claimed responsibility through its Facebook account for planting the IED bomb at the gate of NPP office. The outfit was also re-

sponsible for IED blasts in therecent past at the Laitumkhrah market, Shillong and at a police reserve atKhliehriat, East Jaintia Hills. Chief Minister Conrad Sangma said, “I have not got an official report from the police department. Once I get the full report I will be able to comment”. Home Minister Lahkmen Rymbui said that investigation was on in this regard. Meghalaya police spokesperson Gabriel Iangrai said a

case under relevant provisions of law is being registered at Laitumkhrah Police Station against the members of the proscribed outfit HNLC who have made claims through social media about planting the explosive substances in front of NPP office. SHILLONG, OCT 4 (PTI): The BJP, which is a constituent of the ruling Meghalaya Democratic Alliance, will contest in one of the three by-elections in the state slated for October 30, while the opposition Congress decided to fight in all the three seats, party leaders said on Monday. A BJP spokesperson said the party nominated Kingstone Marak, vice-president of its West Garo Hills district unit, for the Rajabala constituency. His name was selected at a meeting of the state election committee, attended by BJP national vice-president and state in-charge Chuba Ao. The Congress has decided to contest in all the three seats - Rajabala, Mawryngkneng and Mawphlang.

The AICC has approved the candidature of Highlander Kharmalki from Mawryngkneng, Kennedy C Khyriem (former MLA) from Mawphlang and Hashina Yasmin Mondal from Rajabala, a senior party leader said. While Khyriem is a former MLA, the other two are new faces. Mawryngkneng and Rajabala seats were earlier represented by the Congress. The by-polls in the three assembly constituencies were necessitated by the deaths of sitting legislators. The United Democratic Party had earlier announced that former Indian footballer Eugeneson Lyngdoh is its candidate for the Mawphlang seat which was held by his father SK Sunn.

NAGALAND POST, DIMAPUR TUESDAY, OCTOBER 5, 2021

Amid leadership change Lakhimpur Kheri: FIR against minister’s son Chhattisgarh: buzz 35 Cong MLAs return from Delhi farmers’ unions that his son was in one of the cars. Mishra said he has evidence to show that his son was at an event being held elsewhere. According to his version, a vehicle toppled after protesters pelted stones at it. It collapsed on two farmers. Four occupants of the

LAKHIMPUR KHERI/ L U C K N OW, O C T 4 (PTI): The UP government grappled on Monday with the aftermath of violence during a farmers protest in Lakhimpur Kheri, lodging a case against Union minister Ajay Mishra’s son, promising a probe by a retired high court judge and stopping opposition leaders from reaching the trouble spot. Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra was detained in Sitapur on her way to Lakhimpur Kheri, where eight people died and several others were injured on Sunday in the bloodiest clash since the farmers’ protest over the Centre agri laws began last year. Four of the dead were farmers, allegedly knocked down by vehicles driven by BJP workers travelling to welcome Uttar Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Keshav Prasad Maurya. The others were BJP workers and their driver, allegedly pulled out of the vehicles and then lynched by the protesters. Two cars were set on fire. As opposition leaders headed to the Lakhimpur Kheri’s Tikonia village, about 225 km from Lucknow, the Uttar Pradesh

authorities clamped section 144 of the CrPC, which bans the assembly of more than four people, in the district. Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav, Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel, his Punjab counterpart Charanjit Singh Channi, BSP’s S C Mishra and AAP’s Sanjay Singh were among those prevented by the state authorities from reaching Lakhimpur. Protesters bur nt a police jeep outside Gautam Palli police station near Akhilesh Yadav’s home when he was stopped from going to Lakhimpur. The violence briefly figured in the Supreme Court as a three-judge bench said it would examine if organisations which have challenged the validity of a law are allowed to hold a protest on it when the matter is sub-judice. The bench said when such incidents happen, nobody takes responsibility. It was hearing a plea by a farmers’ body

which is seeking directions to authorities to allow it to stage a ‘satyagrah’ at Jantar Mantar in Delhi. In Lakhimpur Kheri, Additional Director General (Law and Order) Prashant Kumar announced that the government will order a probe headed by a retired high court judge and give compensation of Rs 45 lakh each to the families of the dead farmers. The kin will also get a government job. The injured will get Rs 10 lakh. The announcement in the presence of Bharatiya Kisan Union leader Rakesh Tikait seemed to end the standoff with the farmer unions, which then allowed the post-mortem of the four victims. Police also registered a murder case against Ashish Mishra, the son of Union Minister of State for Home Ajay Mishra, and several others over the death of the farmers. The minister, who is an MP from the area, has denied allegation by the

BJP cars were then pulled out and beaten to death. Some video clips showed men lying on the ground, and being hit with lathis. The Samyukta Kisan Morcha (SKM), an umbrella body of farm unions, wrote to President Ram Nath Kovind, demanding that the minister should be sacked.

Opposition slams Yogi govt; demand sacking of Union Minister, arrest of son Opposition par ties on Monday lashed out at the BJP government in Uttar Pradesh for not allowing their leaders to visit Lakhimpur Kheri after eight people died in violence there during an anti farm law protest, alleging it was an attempt to cover up and demanding the sacking of Union Minister Ajay Mishra and the arrest of his son, who have been named in an FIR. Trinamool Congress supremo and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata B a n e r j e e a l l e ge d t h a t “killing Raj is going on, instead of Ram Rajya” in Uttar Pradesh, while Congress chief spokesperson Randeep Sur jewala compared the BJP gover nment to “General Dyer” who ordered firing upon peaceful protesters in Jallianwala Bagh in Amritsar in 1919. CPI(M) general secretary Sitaram Yechury

alleged that democracy was being “throttled” while AAP’s chief spokesperson Saurabh Bharadwaj termed it the “Hathras model” and alleged that both state and central governments are attempting to cover up the incident of Lakhimpur Kheri. The opposition parties also accused some BJP leaders of making provocative statements and questioned the “silence” of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah on the issue. Two FIRs were registered a day after clashes claimed the lives of eight people, including four farmers allegedly run over and four people in a convoy of BJP workers who were lynched. Several opposition parties and farmer leaders have alleged that Union Minister of State for Home Ajay Mishra’s son Ashish ran over the anti-farm protesters, though they both have denied the allegations.

Is crushing farmers, stifling Oppn voices new strategy of BJP? Raut MUMBAI, OCT 4 (PTI): Shiv Sena MP Sanjay Raut on Monday wondered if crushing farmers and stifling the voice of opposition leaders who stand in their support was the BJP’s new strategy, a day after eight people were killed in violence that erupted during a farmers’ protest at Lakhimpur Kheri in Uttar Pradesh. Talking to reporters here, Raut said when a rape incident took place at Saki Naka in Mumbai (last month), the BJP raised a hue and cry, and “we did not stop anyone from going to the crime site”. “Farmers have been run over

allegedly by the car of a minister’s son (in Lakhimpur Kheri). Where does such cruelty come from?” asked the Rajya Sabha member, whose party shares power with the

NCP and Congress in Maharashtra. He said Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and other leaders were stopped (by the BJP government in UP) from going to Lakhimpur Kheri to show solidarity with the farmers protesting over their demand for a repeal of the Centre’s three agrimarketing laws. “Does the BJP have a new strategy of crushing farmers and stifling the voices of opposition leaders who show solidarity with them?” Raut asked. PM Narendra Modi speaks about far mers’ interests, while state governments

SC notice to farmer leaders, groups on plea against road blocks

headed by the BJP “kill farmers” with cars being run over them, the Sena’s chief spokesperson claimed. Raut likened the Lakhimpur Kheri incident to the case of revolutionary Babu Genu, who was run over by a Britisher’s truck while protesting in Mumbai during the independence struggle. Speaking on former Sena MLA Subhash Sabne crossing over to the BJP to fight the upcoming Deglur Assembly bypoll in Maharashtra, Raut wondered if former CM Devendra Fadnavis was touring the state’s Marathwada region to take stock of farm distress.

Farm leaders and farmers stage a protest over Sunday’s violence in Lakhimpur Kheri in Patiala, Monday. (PTI)

NEW DELHI, OCT 4 (IANS): The Supreme Court on Monday issued notice to over 40 farmer leaders and various farmers organisations, who are protesting against the three farm laws, at various DelhiNCR borders. The Haryana government had filed an application to implead the farmer leaders and groups as additional respondents in a plea filed by a Noida resident against the road blockade by farmer groups. A bench of Justices Sanjay Kishan Kaul and M.M. Sundresh issued n o t i c e o n H a r ya n a ’s application on adding new respondents to the matter. Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, representing the Haryana government, said that the state had set up a committee to hold talks, but the protesters’ leaders refused to attend to meet it. As he sought notice be

issued so that the leaders don’t say that they had no reason to come, the bench agreed. Farmer leaders like Rakesh Tikait, Yogendra Ya d av, D a r s h a n P a l , Gur nam Singh etc are among those persons added as respondents by the Haryana government. The top court has scheduled the matter for further hearing on October 20. On Se ptember 30, the Supreme Court had emphasised that roads cannot remain blocked perpetually and asked the Centre, what steps has it taken to remove the road b l o c k a d e b y f a r m e r s, protesting against three agriculture laws, at Delhi borders. A bench headed by Justice Kaul had told Centre’s counsel: “We have already laid down the law and you have to implement it. If we encroach, then

yo u m ay s ay t h a t we have trespassed on your domain.” “How to implement the law is your business. The court has no means to implement it.” The top court said there are grievances, which need to be addressed but queried: “How can highways be blocked perpetually? Where does it end?” It emphasised the problem could be solved through either judicial forum or parliamentary debates, but highways can’t be blocked perpetually. The top court was hearing a plea filed by Monicca Agarwaal seeking directions to remove road blockades, which impedes free movement of traffic between Delhi and Noida. The petitioner had alleged that instead of the normal 20 minutes, she ends up spending two hours for her travel from Noida to Delhi.

RAIPUR, OCT 4 (PTI): Amid speculation about a possible change of guard in the Congress-ruled Chhattisgarh, at least 35 MLAs of the party camping in Delhi for the last few days, returned to Raipur on Monday evening. Most of them said “everything is fine” in the state Congress after landing at the airport here in a special aircraft. One of the legislators said some of his colleagues are still staying in Delhi. After reaching Raipur, these MLAs were seen showing victory signs. When asked about the reason they said everything is fine in Chhattisgarh cur rently helmed by Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel. Sources in Congress had said these MLAs had gone to the national capital to express solidarity with the Chhattisgarh chief minister. However, the majority of the legislators who returned on Monday maintained they had gone on a personal visit. “We had gone (Delhi) for some personal work. When we all MLAs met there, we also tried to meet our state in-charge PL Punia but he was out of Delhi so we could not meet him,” Keshkal MLA Sant Ram Netam told reporters at the Raipur airport. “Rahul Gandhi’s tour of Chhattisgarh is in the pipeline. We all wanted

Bhupesh Baghel

to request him through Punia to visit our respective districts”, he added. Netam added, “ever ything is fine..we will keep visiting Delhi for our work and meeting our leaders”. Mahasamund MLA Vinod Sevanlal Chandrakar said, “all is well. There is nothing of sorts like the speculations in media about the leadership change in Chhattisgarh.” “The way the media is creating an uproar that the CM will be replaced; there is nothing like that. These things are projected by the BJP and RSS,” he claimed. Ta l k i n g t o P T I , Chandrakar said 35 MLAs retur ned to Raipur on Monday evening while some legislators were still staying in Delhi. He said the MLAs’ trip to Delhi should not be given a political colour. Dharamjaigarh MLA Laljeet Singh Rathiya said he and other legislators had gone to extend support to the chief minister but

refused to elaborate. Rathiya said the MLAs came to know from Punia that Rahul Gandhi would visit Raipur on October 7 to take part in the inauguration ceremony of the “Ram Gaman Tourist Circuit” in Chandkhuri village in the Raipur district. Political circles in Chhattisgarh have been rife with speculation about replacing the chief minister after the MLAs, considered close to Baghel, flew to Delhi on different days last week. The CM had said the visit by Congress MLAs to Delhi should not be seen through the prism of politics. Chhattisgarh Health Minister T S Singh Deo, who is apparently seeking to replace Baghel, too played down the visit by MLAs to Delhi saying it should not be made an issue. About the possible leadership change, Singh Deo had reiterated that the Congress high command had seized of the matter. The buzz about possible leadership change began after Baghel completed two-and-a-half years as chief minister in June 2021. The Singh Deo camp had claimed the Congress brass in 2018 had agreed to hand over the CM’s post to him after he completed the half of his five-year term, apparently to prevent factionalism.

Farfetched unity

amata Banerjee’s resounding win with nearly sixty thousand margin for the Bhabanipur assembly constituency on Sunday, will have nevertheless, reassure her that she can now look beyond her state’s borders. Along with her by-poll victory, supporter and admirers have given her many epithets, some even comparing her with famous warriors or even goddesses every time her name is mentioned. After her magnificent fight back in March this year, when she fought tooth and nail to defeat India’s election champion-duo Modi and Shah; the Bengal Tigress wants more. She is now willing and ready to propel herself as the prime ministerial candidate of the opposition. The only party that is stopping Mamata from even coming close to Modi is the Congress, the same party that is still a cause for some worry for even the BJP. The Congress has footprint across India and still the party which has the potential of stopping the BJP in its tracks, provided it is able to form strategic alliances with regional parties. The opposition parties accept that they must forge a broad-based alliance against the BJP so as not to split anti-BJP votes. Theoretically that is possible since all non-NDA parties are in agreement on this point. The other factual theory is that it is only the Congress, with its pan-India footprint, which can play its role as a fulcrum of opposition alliance against the BJP. However, of late, the Congress has been poached upon not only by the BJP but even other parties that are said to be seeking opposition unity. For instance, the Congress has lost some prominent leaders to the Trinamool Congress. In Goa, veteran Congress leader and former chief minister Luizinho Faliero defected to TMC. In Assam where Congress is still a force to reckon with, yet the handling of its internal affairs and misreading by the Gandhis is slowly driving away many of its leaders and workers. Prominent Congress female youth leader Sushmita Dev then president of AICC Mahila and daughter of the king of Silchar late Santosh Mohan Dev has left Congress with over 500 members and joined TMC. Even in Tripura the Congress has lost its most promising youth leader Pradyut Deb Barman who has formed his own party (TIPRA). It is the same story in Meghalaya, where the Congress is likely to lose prominent leaders and workers to TMC or to other parties. The most psychologically damaging impact was the manner in which the Gandhis humiliated the party’s foremost leader and Punjab chief minister Captain Amarinder Singh. The resignation of Amarinder from the Congress in Punjab could not have come at a worst time. The Grand Old Party’s inability to resolve its leadership issue, its abject failure in promoting real grassroots talent to more weighty party positions, its increasing ideological ambivalence and the well-entrenched sycophantic club of selfserving political deadwood have collectively turned the 134-year-old organisation into a caricature of its former self. The final will be in 2024 Lok Sabha election where Modi will continue to lead the BJP seeking a third consecutive term. The semi final will be in 2022 at – state assembly polls. Congress could have been the best meeting point of all parties to forge electoral understanding but the party is destroying itself and being poached and it’s a lose-lose situation. The question on everyone’s mind is -who will likely lead the national opposition against the BJP?

DailyDevotion The Vision and The Reality

…to those who are…called to be saints… —1 Corinthians 1:2 Thank God for being able to see all that you have not yet been. You have had the vision, but you are not yet to the reality of it by any means. It is when we are in the valley, where we prove whether we will be the choice ones, that most of us turn back. We are not quite prepared for the bumps and bruises that must come if we are going to be turned into the shape of the vision. We have seen what we are not, and what God wants us to be, but are we willing to be battered into the shape of the vision to be used by God? The beatings will always come in the most common, everyday ways and through common, everyday people. There are times when we do know what God’s purpose is; whether we will let the vision be turned into actual character depends on us, not on God. If we prefer to relax on the mountaintop and live in the memory of the vision, then we will be of no real use in the ordinary things of which human life is made. We have to learn to live in reliance upon what we saw in the vision, not simply live in ecstatic delight and conscious reflection upon God. This means living the realities of our lives in the light of the vision until the truth of the vision is actually realized in us. Every bit of our training is in that direction. Learn to thank God for making His demands known. Our little “I am” always sulks and pouts when God says do. Let your little “I am” be shriveled up in God’s wrath and indignation— “I AM WHO I AM…has sent me to you” (Exodus 3:14). He must dominate. Isn’t it piercing to realize that God not only knows where we live, but also knows the gutters into which we crawl! He will hunt us down as fast as a flash of lightning. No human being knows human beings as God does.

NAGALAND POST, DIMAPUR TUESDAY, OCTOBER 5, 2021

Job rise be linked to Holistic growth

t last the jobs are growing, says labour bureau employment latest survey by 29 percent in April-June quarter. The total employment rises to 3.08 crore compared to 2.3 crore jobs in 2013-14 seventh quarterly economic survey (QES) in manufacturing, health, education, IT/BPO,trade, financial services. During this period the highest rise is noticed in the IT/BPO sector by 152 percent and employs about 6.7 percent of the labour force. Another aspect is the dipping of total number of employees on payrolls constantly since 2017 from 11.3 lakh employees to 10.9 lakh in 2018 and 10.3 lakh in 2019. The number of public sector employees has been coming down from 19.59 lakh in 199798 and by 2007, across United Front, NDA and UPA governments reduced to 16.14 lakh in 2006-7. As per the February, 2020 survey of Department of Public Enterprises there has been sharp decline in the number of women employees during 2017-20. It dipped from 1.15 lakh in 2017 to 87,667, about 20 percent in two years. While some

experts consider the public sector to be white elephant and revel at dwindling worker numbers, there are others who feel that PSUs are still relevant and need to be streamlined for many reasons including as the Navaratna PSUs have been doing to create a competitive atmosphere for the private sector. Apart there are views that the private sector has yet to mature and give quality employment. The NITI Ayog CEO Amitabh Kant in the Aayog portal in 2020 commented, “though there is sufficient employment, but the true challenge is to create well-paying quality jobs”. He says the PLF surveys presented a poor job scenario as the survey sample was small and inadequate. India’s strength was a mixed economy – the government and the private - pre-1991. It had its problems too. The private sector had to face tough rules to be in competition. So the liberalization was welcomed. It also saw a revamp in the PSU structures and the emergence of efficient, profitmaking PSU carrying the tags of Navratnas and Mini-Navratnas. Many

of these became globally competitive. But policy changes and influence of the private sector saw those giants diminishing through various squeezes on creation of job positions and delayed decision making. While jobs and overall numbers of PSUs deShivaji clined with gradual disinvestments, a proper model need to replicate those giants was largely absent. While a boost to the private sector is welcome, it also needs to be seen that they come up with their own models and survive not just on acquisition of public sector assets. If India has to grow it needs both. In a number of areas like railway operations or power generation private sector has been lukewarm. They have tried to get into areas where they could have large profits without spending much like managing the railway stations or getting into power distribution private sector been lukewarm. This has not changed since 1950s. That is where a pragmatic private sector is needed or else the country has to rethink how the

public is not only retained but get back its strength. A country to make a firm progress has to have two different kinds of models. The CMIE on September 3 report says urban unemployment rose to 9.78 per cent in August from 8.3 per cent in July a nd 10.07 Sarkar per cent in June 2021. The urban unemployment rate was 7.27 per cent in March, just before the second wave of COVID-19 pandemic hit the country. Another observation of the PLFS is that there has been a sharp increase in employment in agriculture from 42.5 percent of the total employment in 2018-19 to The latest periodic PLFS report shows a sharp increase in employment in agriculture from 42.5 percent of the total employment in 2018-19 to 45.6 percent in 201920. Post pandemic the migrant labourers chose to work in the agriculture sector. There are another set of data that still put the numbers employed in the farm sector at 54 percent and may have increased. It is sanctified by the free food dole being availed by 80 crore people and considered a great Indian

achievement. The figures can give different pictures. The NSSO’s periodic labour force survey (PLFS) for July 2019 – June 2020 mentions surge in female labour force participation rate, as evidenced in the latest and looks to be a positive sign, but there is a catch: much of this increase is in the most sub-optimal category of unpaid family workers. The worker lives with the unit’s proprietor and work for them but does not get paid for their services. family, work, add to their wealth but are not paid. A report by the Human Rights Watch (HRW) revealed in October 2020 that a whopping 94 per cent of women in India are employed in the informal sector as domestic workers. As in many developing countries, India also showed signs of decline in agricultural employment corresponding to production. The employment rate for unpaid workers in household enterprises increased from 13.3 per cent in 2018-19 to 15.9 per cent in 2019-2020. For female workers, the employment for unpaid work increased to 35 per cent from 30 per

cent in 2018-19. India needs to look at this lowest level of subsistence. Amitabh Kant does not talk about them but stresses on the Rs 1.96 lakh crore ProductionLinked Incentive scheme. He hopes it would generate an incremental production of $ 520 billion in five years and pave the way for $ 5 trillion economy. It is basically aimed at funding the private sector. Had this been aimed public sector the gains could have been more. That jobs are not growing everywhere is also clear from QES. In many sectors there have been job losses like accommodation, travel, tourism and wage reduction in many others including the IT. He laments the taxes on fuel and certain other items are causing inflation. Apart the QES is limited to comparison giving a brighter look to the figures. Post-pandemic there are positive signs but still data may not be reflecting the reality. The job figures have to be studied in totality find out how it is helping every sector. The NITI Aayog should do that to set the pace for a holistic growth and happiness.

Post-mortem

A history lesson

S

ince History and geography merged to become Social Science in board curriculum, the door for learning the bygone years for young generation got barred. Now people started whingeing young minds for their little knowledge about our golden past. It’s a common misconception that history is all about empires and battlefields. But that was challenged and proved later. Many civil service aspirants get helped for preparing General Studies through history lesson. Parliamentary Standing Committee on education is now discussing reforms in the textbooks and curriculums of NCERT with a focus on removing references to un-historical facts and distortions about national heroes; ensuring equal or proportionate references to all periods of Indian history. Assam has decided to make both history and geography compulsory for schools from the next academic session. We know so little about the great Maratha Warrior Shivaji, Maharana Pratap – the Hindu Rajput of Mewar, whose military resistance against the imperialism of the Mughal and Guru Govind Singh for creation of the Khalsa. Shivaji once had such an illustrious ruler even Adolf Hitler once quoted to Subhash Chandra Bose “your country doesn’t require any Hitler to throw out British. All you need to teach is Shivaji’s history”. Ironically, Indian history is all about Mughal pluralism and praises Babar, Akbar and Aurangajeb. No doubt Mughal conquered Kabul to Kandahar, Iraq, Iran and Turkistan but they couldn’t defeat Shivaji and had to involve 27 years of long battle with the Maratha.

The warriors of Abu Taliban & Turkistan, Uzbekistan, Afghanistan, Mongolia and Iranian were defeated by Shivaji Should we revisit history and historiography to explore? India’s history begins with the ancient Indus Valley Civilization (2500-1700 BCE) and the migration of Indo-Aryan (1800-1500 BCE). Vedic period (1750500 BCE) flourished along the river Saraswati and Vedas are early literature of the Hindus with two greatest epics the Ramayana and the Mahabharata. The teaching of Buddhism (mid-6th - mid4th century BCE) spread throughout southern and eastern Asia and now followed across the world. Meanwhile Alexander invaded India in 326 BCE. The golden age of Indian history referred to Mauryan Empire Chandragupta (321297 BCE) for strategic conquest and flourishing state. The Chinese traveler Fa-Hien heaped a lot of praise of him. Harshavardhana (606 to 647 CE) of Thanneshwar & Kannauj was known for generosity and administrative skills. His defeat by Pulakeshin II of Chalukya Kingdom (6th12th centuries) of South marked the end of the last ancient king. Medieval history was part of the southern end of the Indian peninsula. The kingdoms of Cholas (9th - 13th century), Pandyas (6th - 14th century) and the Cheras (9th - 12 century) are mentioned in the Ashokan inscriptions. Pandyas covers modern Tirunelveli, Madurai, Ramnad and Travancore while Cholas at Tanjore and Tiruchirappali of Tamil Nadu and Cheras in Kerala coast. The ruins of Vijayanagara at Hampi, Chola’s Dynasty at Thanja-

vur, Pallava’s mythological history at Mahabalipuram and various temples at Madurai, Kanchipuram, Chidambaram, Pattadakal, Belur Halebid, Shravana Belgola, dominate Dravidian masterpieces with ancient towering. There is not enough tangible evidence to reconstruct the ancient history of Assam (4th - 12th century) that sourced from the Varman dynasty (350-650). Chinese pilgrim-scholar Hiuen-Tsang visited the court of Bhaskarvarman in 636 AD who made epoch making contribution to Buddhism. There were rulers from Mlechchha dynasty (650-900) at Tezpur to Pala dynasty (8th - 12th century) in Kamrupa. Medieval Assam (12061826) witnessed great significance as Sukapha entered Assam and established the Ahom capital at Charaideo in 1252. At the same time the Kamata Kingdom emerged in western Kamrupa and Chutiya Kingdom (11871673) around Sadiya. Ahom continued battle with Dimasa / Kachari (13th - 18th century) Kingdom at Dimapur, Maibong and Khaspur. The invasion of Timur (1398) made significant point on the Bhakti movement (15th century). On the same time, Assam’s great social-religious reformer Saint Scholar Shrimanta Sankardeva (1449-1568) made his effort to unite all with Ek Saran Naam Dharma. 16th century witnessed the rise of Koch dynasty under Narnarayan and Chilarai. The rise of Mughal in the 16th century united India under one monarch during Babar, Humayun, Akbar, Jahangir, Shah Jahan, and Aurangzeb. Influences of Islamic architecture have greatly reflected during Mughal period but India

disintegrated after the fall of Aurangzeb. Our history failed to highlight the defeat of Mughals by the Ahom in the battle of Saraighat in 1671. 18th century uprising began as power str uggle between the Moamorias (Mataks) and the Ahom Kings. Three Burmese invasions of Assam between 1817 and 1825 called the manor din by the indigenous Assamese are remembered with horror. Treaty of Yandaboo 1826 ended the Burmese occupation and the beginning of British occupation in Assam. European began trading in India during the late 16th to 17th centuries but only British could establish dominant power during the end of 18th century. They achieved political power in 1757 AD after the Battle of Plassey. Two centuries of British administration exploited India ruthlessly and brought changes on the economic, social, and cultural spheres as well. There are multiple mutinies to freedom movement and Azad Hind Fauj that changed India’s freedom struggle finally a freedom at last. Many opine India’s discovery begun after the end of the British Empire. British legacy is alive and kicking in every bit of Indian life. The English language itself is a legacy of the British rule and continues to be the lingua franca of Indians in our own country. Britain retained control of India not out of benevolence but for the sake of plunder and colonialism has systematically destroyed India’s rich heritage and culture. We really never learnt history much from our school-books. Kamal Baruah

H

umans have their own mantras in life to deal with their own problems and agony since ages. Our existence have come a long, long way and we have found solutions to almost everything today, yet there is one thing where humans fail at and that is to ‘value human’ because of superiority, narcissism, jealousy and insecurity. Today as humans, most of us have become so righteous in our actions that we always put the blame on our counterparts fearing the blame and also we always want all the praises even for our lesser actions performed. In the present time attention has become a key component for validation and most people seek for it forgetting our moral and ethical values. The sad reality is that we are all very good in preaching but not following it out in a pragmatic manner. We are also very good at passing judgements becoming the judge, jury and the executioner. Looking down on people is a not a new thing in our society, categorizing people based on profession, religion, community is an old chapter we have already read. Are we religious? Yes, by showing people that we worship God for few hours wearing properly ironed clothes. Are we compassionate? Yes, by only helping people with a motive in return. Will you stab your colleague in their back to get that promotion? Verbally No but practically yes. Will you complain that someone in your wedding came empty handed? No but yes. Man has become too materialistic, self-centered and over ambitious that the value of being human is lost in the air. We have actually created a totally new world where truth and integrity rarely matters, where human existence is stereotyped based on our self-satisfying criteria. Now if I don’t give or do something you asked for then automatically I become a bad person. In this world, faking is the new trend of keeping ourselves in the limelight. Speaking the truth is considered an act of rebellion which can create a dire situation for the person holding the truth. Our lives in current times is like the three monkeys of Gandhiji the only difference is that “Don’t speak the truth, Don’t see the truth and Don’t hear the truth” and if you follow these principles then you are the best suited human of today’s world. My only question for everyone is how much compromise have we made so far? Serfudin Ali, Immanuel College, Dimapur

Poor road condition in Nagaland

n Nagaland, the four lane road project connecting Dimapur with the state capital Kohima, is taking many years to complete it. It seems to have started in the year 2015 and was agreed to complete within 3 years by the Nagaland Government which resulted many difficulties for public transportations between Dimapur and Kohima.

The conditions of other roads within the State are also badly neglected since the last few years without any signs of either new constructions or repair. All the money sent by the central to construct roads seems to vanish each year. The politicians of Nagaland rushes will provide black topping of roads just before the election to cover the pot-holes in or-

der to make public happy to gain some votes during elections. The condition of the roads in almost all the districts is terrible. It is neglected for many years without constructing or repair. For example, take the road condition between Tuensang and Noklak. The road condition is so horrible that the one who takes the road has to bear the untold

misery of bone wrenching and stomach churning journey. Due to the fear of the horrible road, sometimes, we, who have to go through those roads, do not feel like visiting our own hometowns during the winter breaks or summer breaks which is very disappointing. If the gover nment is not in a position to maintain the condition of the roads, it should at

least ensure proper safety measures by putting up effective safety devices including reflectors and signboards, safety barriers, guide walls, proper drainage, proper manning of hazardous zones and deputing quick response team on vulnerable stretch of roads and accident prone areas. This will ensure low accident rates thus saving precious lives

as this is one of the main reasons why many lives have been affected due to accidents happening more frequently. The gover nment should therefore take up effective measures and responsibilities for any road development projects. Phanyiu, 1st semester (Honours), Department of English, Modern College, Kohima

Need to focus on developing dual-use tech, says Rajnath

NEW DELHI, OCT 4 (PTI): India needs to focus on developing dual-use technologies for both military and civilian agencies and special attention should be paid to research and development for manufacturing state-of-the-art defence platforms, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said on Monday. He said the demand for military equipment is increasing around the world in view of global security concerns, border disputes and developments in the maritime sphere, and India must focus to enhance its domestic defence industry. Addressing an event

organised by the Defence Research Development Organisation (DRDO), Singh said that no corner of the world is left untouched by the changes seen in areas of strategic affairs, military power, trade, economy and communication. He, however, did not specifically elaborate on the changes that he was talking about. “Countries around the world are focusing on military modernisation and demand for military equipment has gone up in view of global security concerns, border disputes and developments in the maritime domain,” Singh said.

Govt uses iron fist against its own people: Mehbooba

Mehbooba Mufti

S R I NA G A R , O C T 4 (PTI): In an apparent reference to the violence in Uttar Pradesh’s Lakhimpur Kheri, PDP president Mehbooba Mufti alleged on Monday that imposing Section 144 wherever human rights and dignity have trampled upon has emerged as the Centre’s preferred approach. She claimed that the government uses an iron fist against its own people but welcomes Chinese troops with open arms. Her remarks came after at least eight people were killed as violence erupted in Lakhimpur Kheri on Sunday. Multiple opposition leaders tried to make their way to the Uttar Pradesh district through the night but were prevented from doing so. “Applying Section 144 wherever human rights

& dignity is trampled has emerged as GOIs preferred approach. This government shows no hesitation in using an iron fist with its own people but welcomes Chinese troops with open arms,” the PDP chief wrote on Twitter. “One can’t even compare the oppression unleashed in J&K since 2019 but the common denominators are obvious. What started in J&K was sadly met with an air of indifference & has now engulfed the entire country. When will we speak up?” she asked. Commenting on the situation in Lakhimpur Kheri, National Conference vice president Omar Abdullah said Uttar Pradesh has become the new Jammu and Kashmir. “Uttar Pradesh is the ‘naya J&K’,” he tweeted.

Stalin seeks support from 12 CMs for abolishing NEET

M.K. Stalin

CHENNAI, OCT 4 (IANS): Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin has written to 12 counterparts across the country, seeking the support for scrapping the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET), an official statement said on Monday. In the letter written on October 1, he has asked his counterparts of Andhra Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Delhi, Kerala, Maharashtra, Odisha, Punjab, Rajasthan, Telangana, West Bengal, and Goa, to put up a united effort to restore the primacy of state governments in administering the education sector according to the Constitution. In the letter, Stalin wrote: “Our considered position has always been that the move by the Union

government to introduce NEET goes against the spirit of federalism and violates the constitutional balance of power by curbing the rights of state governments to decide on the method of admission in the medical institutions founded, established and run by them. In this regard, we consider that state governments need to assert their constitutional right and position in deciding the method of admission to their higher educational institutions.” The state government statement also said that a delegation of DMK Parliamentarians will be handing over a translated copy of the Justice A.K. Rajan committee report studying the adverse impact of NEET on medical admissions in Tamil Nadu to the representatives of the state governments in Delhi. The Tamil Nadu Legislature has recently passed the Tamil Nadu Admission to Undergraduate Medical Degree Courses Act, 2021, based on the recommendations of the Justice Rajan committee, which had studied whether NEET had affected backward students in the past few years.

NEW DELHI, OCT 4 (PTI): Hundreds of wealthy Indians, including business people, figure in the ‘Pandora Papers’ that has uncovered financial assets of rich individuals across the world, and many of the Indians have rejected allegations of misdoings. A multi-agency group, to be headed by CBDT chairman will investigate ‘Pandora Papers’ case The ‘Pandora Papers’, leak of troves of financial records in offshore tax havens, has been obtained by the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists (ICIJ). More than 300 Indian names are part of the list. Anil Ambani, Vinod Adani, Jackie Shroff, Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw, Niira Radia, Sachin Tendulkar and Satish Sharma, among others, figure in the list of Indians in the ‘Pandora Papers’ revealed so far. Rights group Oxfam India has called for immediate action by authorities and abolishing tax havens following the expose of the ‘Pandora Papers’. “ Ta x h ave n s c o s t governments around the world USD 427 billion each year. Developing

countries are being hardest hit, proportionately. Cor porations and the wealthiest individuals that use tax havens are outcompeting those who don’t. Tax havens also help crime and corruption to flourish,” Oxfam India CEO Amitabh Behar said. Abolishing tax havens can go a long way towards ensuring that government actually have the access to tax revenue they need to fund quality public expenditure, he added. Many of the people whose names have come out in the ‘Pandora Papers’ have rejected financial misdoings. Among others, Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw on Monday said her hubsand’s offshore trust was bonafide and legitimate. “Media stories reporting on Pandora Papers wrongly implicate my husband’s offshore trust,

which is a bonafide, legitimate trust and is managed by Independent Trustees. No Indian resident holds “the key” to the trust as alleged in these stories,” Mazumdar-Shaw, the executive chairperson of biotechnology major Biocon, said in a tweet. The ICIJ involves at least 150 media outlets worldwide, including ‘The Indian Express’ in India, and claims to have obtained as many as 12 million documents from 14 companies in offshore tax havens. “People linked by the secret documents to offshore assets include India’s cricket superstar Sachin Tendulkar, pop music diva Shakira, supermodel Claudia Schiffer and an Italian mobster known as ‘Lell the Fat One’,” ICIJ said in its report, which was first published on October 3.

Actor Sharukh Khan’s son and accused Aaryan Khan being taken to court after he was arrested in Mumbai. (PTI)

ditional Solicitor-General Anil Singh argued that links found on Aryan Khan’s WhatsApp chats point to an international racket. Besides the 8 nabbed from the swoop on the cruiser, Singh said that one more person has been arrested by the NCB from Juhu and recovered ‘commercial quantity’ of drugs from him, and the custody of the accused trio was necessary to unearth their nexus. Making a strong plea for bail, Khan’s lawyer Satish Maneshinde said that he was invited by the party organisers, he did not pay for the party, was allotted the best suite on the ship, no

drugs were found on him, but a small quantity of 6-gm Charas was recovered from his friend Merchant. Merchant’s lawyer Taraq K. Sayed pointed out that the NCB remand application was absolutely silent on the quantity of drugs recovered from each accused. At this, when the ACMM asked the agency, the NCB replied that small quantities of 6 gm and 5 gm respectively were recovered from Merchant and Dhamecha, besides 5 gm MDMA and 10 gm Cocaine found from another accused Vikrant Chhoker, but did not mention Aryan Khan’s name here.

The pandemic induced lockdown severely dented the finances of the Kolkatabased NBFC, leading to an asset-liability mismatch. Subsequently, the lenders of the company took control of its finances to recover their dues, triggering mass level exits at Srei Group, as salary delays became a routine, and remunerations of the top-level executives are capped at Rs 50 lakh per annum. The chief operating officer (COO) of the company’s fully-owned subsidiary Srei Equipment Finance Ltd (SEFL) had left in April. The company secretaries of SIFL and SEFL had resigned in March and May, respectively.

TOKYO, OCT 4 (IANS): Fumio Kishida, leader of Japan’s ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), was elected on Monday as the country’s new Prime Minister to succeed Yoshihide Suga. As the ruling coalition led by the LDP controls both chambers, 64-year-old Kishida secured a majority of votes of both the House of Representatives and the House of Councillors during a special Parliament session called to elect a new Prime Minister, reports Xinhua news agency. After naming his new Cabinet in the afternoon, Kishida will be formally inaugurated in a ceremony at the Imperial Palace and hold a press conference in the evening. “This is the real starting point. I will go forth with a strong sense of determination, with a strong resolution,” he said at the LDP’s headquarters in Tokyo shortly before the session started.

Nobel Prize honors discovery of temperature, touch receptors S TO C K H O L M , O C T 4 (AP): Two U.S.-based scientists were awarded the Nobel Prize in physiology or medicine on Monday for their discovery of the receptors that allow humans to feel temperature and touch. David Julius and Ardem Patapoutian focused their work on the field of somatosensation, that is the ability of specialized organs such as eyes, ears and skin to see, hear and feel. “This really unlocks one of the secrets of nature,” said Thomas Perlmann, secretary-general of the Nobel Committee, in announcing the winners. “It’s actually something that is crucial for our survival, so it’s a very important and profound discovery.” The committee said Julius, 65, used capsaicin, the active component in chili peppers, to identify the nerve sensors that allow the skin to respond to heat. Patapoutian found separate pressure-sensitive sensors in cells that respond to mechanical stimulation, it said. The pair shared the prestigious Kavli Award for Neuroscience last year. “Imagine that you’re walking barefoot across a field on this summer’s morning,” said Patrik Ernfors of the Nobel Com-

mittee. “You can feel the warmth of the sun, the coolness of the morning dew, a caressing summer breeze and the fine texture of blades of grass underneath your feet. These impressions of temperature, touch and movement are feelings relying on somatosensation.” “Such information continuously flows from the skin and other deep tissues and connects us with the external and internal world. It is also essential for tasks that we perform effortlessly and without much thought,” said Ernfors. Perlmann said he managed to get hold of both of the winners before the announcement. “I (...) only had a few minutes to talk to them, but they were incredibly happy,” he said. “And as

far as I could tell they were very surprised and a little bit shocked, maybe.” Last year’s prize went to three scientists who discovered the liver-ravaging hepatitis C virus, a breakthrough that led to cures for the deadly disease and tests to keep the scourge from spreading though blood banks. The prestigious award comes with a gold medal and 10 million Swedish kronor (over $1.14 million). The prize money comes from a bequest left by the prize’s creator, Swedish inventor Alfred Nobel, who died in 1895. The prize is the first to be awarded this year. The other prizes are for outstanding work in the fields of physics, chemistry, literature, peace and economics.

Spanish PM pledges aid for volcano affected island MADRID, OCT 4 (IANS): Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez has promised an aid package of 206 million euros ($239 million) to help the island of La Palma overcome the effects of the ongoing eruption of the Cumbre Vieja volcano. The aid package, which is aimed at supporting infrastructure, tourism and water supplies, would be approved at Tuesday’s cabinet meeting and passed by a royal decree as quickly as possible, Xinhua news agency quoted Sanchez as saying. This “potent aid package” will be added to the 10.5 million euros in aid approved last week to be granted to help people displaced by the eruption. “I want to underline the exemplary response of the population. We have to communicate a feeling of security to the residents and to tourists who could visit the island,” said Sanchez, who made his third visit to the island on Sunday as the eruption entered its 15th day. Coalition airstrikes kill 28 Houthis in Yemen’s Marib SANAA, OCT 4 (IANS): At least 28 Houthis were killed in airstrikes launched by the Saudi-led coalition forces in Yemen’s Marib province, a government source said. “Twenty-eight rebels were killed and 10 weapon-mounted vehicles were destroyed in the coalition airstrikes on the rebel positions at the adjacent frontlines of Lam’aa and Om Reesh in Harib district,” the source told Xinhua news agency on Sunday. “The airstrikes were a response to the rebels’ ground attack on the positions of the government forces at the frontlines,” the source added. Meanwhile, the Houthi-run al-Masirah TV reported 20 Saudi-led airstrikes in the Harib and three in Sirwah on Sunday, without providing the details of the militia casualties. The report claimed that the Houthi forces were advancing in Marib province despite the heavy airstrikes. The frontlines of Lam’aa and Om Reesh are about 60 km south of the government-controlled Marib city. The Iran-backed Houthi militia launched in February a major offensive on Marib in an attempt to seize control of the oil-rich province, the last northern stronghold of the Saudibacked Yemeni government.

SEOUL, OCT 4 (AP): North and South Korea restored a stalled communication hotline after weeks of a hiatus in a small, fragile reconciliation step Monday, as the North pushes hard to win outside concessions with a mix of conciliatory gestures and missile tests. Liaison officials from the two Koreas exchanged messages over a cross-border communication channel on Monday morning, Seoul’s Unification Ministry said. The two Koreas are expected to restore other communication channels running across their tense border later Monday as they have both previously expressed their intentions to reopen them. The phone and fax channels — which the rival Koreas use to set up meetings, arrange border crossings and avoid accidental clashes — have been largely dormant for more than a year. Communications were briefly revived for about two weeks this summer, but North Korea later refused to exchange messages again after Seoul staged annual military drills with Washington that it views as an invasion rehearsal. “The South Korean authorities should make positive efforts to put the North-South ties on a right track and settle the impor-

The Japukong Senso Senden highly appreciates the Aonokpu Village Council, the Nokpu Village Council, the Saringyim Village Council and the Longchem Ad-hoc Town Council for their immense contributions by repairing the Longchem - Naganijan road. The road which is the lifeline for the Longchem administrative block is in deplorable condition, neglected far long by the government. The JSS thank all the four Councils members for their selfless contributions towards the welfare of our people. The Japukong Senso Senden also expresses deep appreciation to the Hon'ble Minsiter for Higher Education & Tribal Affairs, Temjen Imna Along for his prompt action by personally providing financial assistance to repair the recently damaged Liangmen bridge under the same Longchem–Naganijan road. to realize the Korean people’s desire to promote peace on the peninsula. But Kim urged Seoul to abandon a “double-dealing attitude” and “hostile viewpoint” over North Korea’s recent missile tests and other developments while shrugging off U.S. offers for dialogue as a “cunning” concealment of its hostility against North Korea. Some experts say North Korea is trying to use South Korea’s desire to improve ties to pressure it to persuade the United States to relax punishing economic sanctions. Separate from its peace overtures, North Korea has conducted a series of missile tests that were its first weapons launches in six months. The weapons tested include potentially nuclearcapable missiles that place South Korea and Japan, both key U.S. allies, within striking distance.

The truth about exercising and aging I’m Just Too Old

E

ou can come up with a million reasons for not being physically active. Some might even be valid. But know this: Stillness is bad. Roughly 3.2 million people die each year because of physical inactivity. Regular exercise, especially among older adults, is critical to good health.

T

he more you do to stay active as you age, the lower your chances are for things like heart attack and stroke. Your doctor can tell you what type of exercises are best, and for how long you should do them. You’ll probably shoot for 150 minutes of moderate aerobic activity a week, like a brisk walk or an easy bike ride. Mowing the lawn or a heavy cleaning session counts, too. And you don’t have to do them in 30-minute chunks.

I’m Afraid of Hurting Myself

T

o be safe, check with your doctor first, especially if you’ve been inactive or have health problems. Your doctor knows what you need and what you can do. Experts say those just starting out should begin slowly with low-intensity exercises. Drink plenty of water, listen to your body, warm up before your workout, and cool down after it.

recent study suggests that certain exercises -- like riding a stationary bicycle -- actually slow cell decline that can happen as you age. In other words, it’s never too late to reap the benefits of exercise. No matter how old you are, how inactive, or how out of shape you have been for however long, exercise can be provide lots of help for lots of things.

eing physically active doesn’t necessarily mean pushing around big weights at the gym or going for a 10-mile run. Do things that you enjoy and that will keep you at it. You could work in the yard, walk with friends, work in the garden (lifting and bending are great for flexibility and strength), or take a bike ride. Mix things up every so often, too, so you don’t get bored.

I Don’t Have an Exercise Buddy

I Don’t Have the Time

H av i n g a partner or getting into a group helps. Studies show that supervision and support can help you stay focused and feel good about what you’re doing. Buddies can really help if you’ve been inactive for a while and you’re cranking things back up. Some people do prefer to go solo. If you’re not one, find a group in your community. You can find one online, or your doctor can help you.

A full schedule -- because of babysitting the grandkids, other f a m i ly o b l i g a tions, housework, etc. -- often is cited as a reason to skip exercise. When you think about all the benefits of regular physical activity, and the minimum time required (150 minutes a week of moderate aerobic activity), the answer is clear: If you want to stay healthy, you can find the time.

Exercises that promote flexibility are in a group of four cornerstone movements (along with those that improve e n d u r a n c e, strength, and balance) that you should probably work on. That stiffness can be alleviated with, for example, stretching exercises that target hips, legs, shoulders, your neck, your back … anywhere. Yoga can help, too. Take it easy, though, and don’t stretch so far that it hurts. Office Of the

DC prevail over CSK by 3 wickets in IPL

DUBAI, OCT 4 (PTI): Shimron Hetmyer kept his nerves and played some fine shots under pressure to guide Delhi Capitals to a three-wicket win over Chennai Super Kings in a battle for top-two finish in the Indian Premier League here on Monday. Needing 28 from the last three overs to reach the target of 137, the Guyanese picked 12 runs against Dwayne Bravo and then got 10 off pacer Josh Hazlewood to bring down the equation to six runs from six balls. DC completed the job with two balls to spare despite losing Axar Patel. Hetmyer remained not out on a vital 28 off 18 balls. But the Koreans seized the initiative (6-6), and it proved costly. The experienced Korean, upping the ante, ensured its place in the final.

AIBA to ensure ‘Fair Chance, Fair Fight’ at World Boxing C’ships NEW DELHI, OCT 4 (IANS): With less than one month until the men’s World Boxing Championships begin in Belg rade, the I n t e r n a t i o n a l B ox i n g Association (AIBA) has unveiled “Fair Chance, Fair Fight” as the theme of the competitions. “Every boxer deserves a fair chance and a fair fight. We are fully committed to that principle, and we hope to demonstrate just how dedicated we are to keeping that at the core of our boxing events. It is critical to ensure a safe environment for all athletes, and especially for people in transition. I truly believe that by helping people in need we help society, at the same time as we develop boxing,” AIBA President Umar Kremlev said in a statement. In order to further support AIBA’s belief that athletes’ chances of winning need to be exclusively up to the level of their skill and the quality of their performance, a new selection criteria has been introduced for referees and judges. No part selection process is being left up to the

discretion of a single person, a random element has been added to safeguard the participants from attempts at competition manipulation. Additional candidate background checks will be carried out by the team of Professor Richard McLaren, an independent expert, appointed by AIBA earlier in the year to conduct an investigation into the organisation’s past sporting integrity issues. Beyond that, competition officials will be undergoing further training prior to Belgrade Championships, including but not limited to a module on enhanced ethics and behavioural provisions. “We owe it to all our athletes to do everything in our power to secure a safe, controlled, and fair environment for them to demonstrate the results of years of training. Their job is to put on a fight in the ring, our job is to make sure it is judged and assessed fairly. Therefore our officials have to be trusted with taking good care of our boxers and their winning chances,” AIBA secretary general Istvan Kovacs said.
