authority for procuring the fertilizer. However, they were deprived of getting the fertilizer even as more than 10 days had passed since the submission of the documents, they alleged. The farmers further alleged that intending candidates close to the ruling parties procured the fertilizer in bulk and distributed it at their own will. A farmer said scarcity of fertilizers has disrupted agricultural activities and false assurances of the government have made them helpless. “We have lost our faith in the system. But we are helpless as the fertilizer (urea) is not available even in the black market which we used to buy at much higher rates in the previous years,” he said. Farmers across the state have been demanding availability of fertilizer since the start of the agricultural activities for the Kharif season. The protesting farmers alleged that even though the government including chief minister N Biren Singh and agriculture minister O Lukhoi repeatedly assured availability of urea fertilizer, which is controlled by the state government, it was yet to be made available to them.

On the auspicious occasion of Teachers' Day, I on behalf of the people of Nagaland and my behalf express our sincere gratitude to all the teachers specially those of the State of Nagaland who are serving the people, the society, and the Nation with their extraordinary services. With their dedication they are constantly shaping the young and dynamic minds of our future generations - endowing them with intellectual heft and help imbibing needed ethical values. We observe this auspicious day which is the birth anniversary of Dr. Sarvapalli Radhakrishnan, who served this great Nation as President, intellectual leader of repute, and most significantly as an outstanding teacher. Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam, a role model of intellectual excellence and utmost humility for all of us, used to say that the destiny of a nation depends upon its teachers. A teacher's roles and responsibilities transcend the classroom teaching. Their personal and social conducts in day to day life inspire, aspire, and shape the overall personality of students and help them becoming ideal citizens. On this occasion, I urge upon our teachers to re-dedicate themselves with renewed resolve to the service of the nation.

MESSAGE
5th September, 2021
On the occasion of Teacher's Day I extend warm greetings to all those in the teaching community and would further like to express my heartfelt gratitude for the pivotal role played by teachers in the life of every student. It is an auspicious day, and a day for us to pay tribute and celebrate the sacrifices and commitment of our teachers. A teacher's influence is forever imprinted in every student and it manifests itself throughout his life. Indeed, we should be ever grateful to our teachers for providing academic, spiritual and emotional guidance. Today the Education sector has been hit hard by the Covid-19 pandemic for almost two years and it is still struggling to recover. However, I am much encouraged to see teachers adapting to the new norms of imparting online education so that the academic life of students do not suffer. It is quite a challenging task and it cannot provide the same environment as physical classes, but I am happy to see that teachers and students alike have resolutely and innovatively embraced it. On this special day, I also congratulate all the recipients of the Teachers' Awards across the State. May you be an inspiration to your peers and continue your noble deeds in molding successful and responsible citizens and leaders of tomorrow. Finally, I wish all teachers success in their respective endeavors and pray that the Almighty God bless you with wisdom and the best of health.

KCR urges Amit Shah to raise Freedom of speech linked to good policing: Shah Telangana’s IPS cadre strength NEW DELHI, SEP 4 (PTI): Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Saturday said the most important thing in a democracy is a citizen’s independence and freedom of expression which is directly linked to good policing, and this needs to be continuously improved. He said ‘beat constable’ deployed at the lowest level of the police system makes the “biggest contribution” towards making a democracy successful by protecting the common man. Delivering the keynote speech during the 51st foundation day event of the Bureau of Police Research and Development (BPR&D), the minister said democracy cannot be successful if law and order is not good. “Democracy is our nature... this was our character even before independence and we accepted this after gaining freedom. This is the nature of our people. The biggest thing in a democracy is a person’s independence and freedom of expression,” he said. When it comes to freedom of expression of a person, it is directly linked to law and order, he noted. “Democracy is not just about voting for parties and

forming a government... this is just a part of the system. What is the success or fruit of democracy? The fruit is that 130 crore people of the country, according to their capabilities and intelligence, get to develop themselves and the country gets the benefit of this cumulative effect for its development,” Shah said. He emphasised that democracy cannot prosper if law and order in a country is not good. “This work is done by police and forces that guard our borders. It is very important for a successful democracy that the security of a person is ensured. The citizen should keep getting his legal rights in an uninterrupted manner. A citizen should be able to discharge his duties as per the spirit of the constitution,” the Union minister stated.
Police don’t want to nab real culprits of Delhi riots: Atishi NEW DELHI, SEP 4 (IANS): The Aam Aadmi Party leader Atishi on Saturday said that police don’t want to nab real culprits of Delhi riots. In a press conference on Saturday, she said that after one-and-a-half year, every court has questioned the police investigation which directly comes under BJP. She said, “Courts repeatedly pulled up the police saying that the investigation ‘has gaping holes’ and has ‘no application of mind’. The question is, who is Delhi Police trying to protect?” Blaming Delhi Police for shoddy investigation, she said that it is clear that Delhi Police does not want to do proper investigation in the cases of Delhi riots. Out of a total 750 cases, charge sheet has been filed in only 35 cases so far and now the court itself has commented that what kind of investiga-
tion is this, said the AAP leader. She claimed that even the special prosecutors do not know what the Delhi Police is doing and this is the reason why the central government and the LG do not want the special prosecutors to be appointed as per the Delhi government. Talking about ongoing investigation, Atishi said, “Additional Sessions Judge Vinod Yadav has said that this investigation of Delhi Police is a blot on the history of the country”. “When Justice Muraleedharan had asked why action was not taken on the inflammatory speeches, the Delhi Police replied that they did not even watch the video”, she added. All the arrests made by the Delhi Police so far in the case, and those who are not arrested yet are questionable, said Atishi.
And hence, he said, upgrading and improving police force is the work of BPR&D. Shah noted that the image of police, at certain times, is maligned by certain quarters. “I do not know why a campaign has been run to damage the image of police. Some incidents are hyped and shown, while good incidents are not popularised,” he said. The home minister said while various other institutions like the parliament, state assemblies, judiciary, election commission, CAG and vigilance commission have made democracy successful, the beat constable of police deserved a far greater appreciation in this context. “Not because I am the home minister, but I have had this thinking since my childhood that to make democracy successful, the biggest contribution is of the beat constable,” he said. Without reviving beat policing, basic policing cannot be good and this has to be updated which requires technology upgradation and BPR&D needs to work on that, the minister noted. “I want to say it again that the most difficult job
in the government service is that of a policeman,” he reiterated. During all festivals, whether it is Holi, Deepwali or Eid, policemen are on duty, he said. “There are no fixed work hours, neither a definite scope of work for a policeman. I have seen that all this takes a toll on their health and there is no acknowledgement of these things.... the sacrifices made by police personnel is not mentioned much,” the minister rued. He asked the BPR&D to give “special focus” and work on the image building of police. The police should change their work style as per the challenge, he said, counting cyber attacks, drone attacks, narcotics smuggling, fake currency and hawala rackets as the “biggest” challenges for the security establishment. “For all this, you (BPR&D) should prepare our forces and also study the best practices across the globe,” he said. The skills of the cops should be sharpened, Shah said. The minister also talk-
ed about reforms done by the Modi government and various steps taken to empower the law enforcement agencies. “The home ministry is doing a number of things to bring about radical changes in the IPC, CrPC and the Evidence Act,” he said. Interaction has been held in this context with at least 14 states, three UTs, eight central police organisations, six CAPFs and 7 NGOs; and they have sent in their suggestions. “This is a work in progress...this is a big work,” he added. The minister said his government has brought in necessary “radical changes” in the Foreign Contribution Regulation Act (FCRA) to check funds sent to “destabilise” the country. Addressing officers and personnel from various central, state and Union Territory police forces, Shah said the next decade is going to be very important from the point of internal security as the country under Prime Minister Narendra Modi was taking giant leaps in becoming a strong nation and economy, and we should “not think that some forces will try to stop this.”

Soumen Roy (second from right) during a ceremony to mark his return to TMC.
KO L K ATA , S E P 4 (IANS): On a day when the Election Commission announced the bypolls in Bhowanipur from where Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee will seek to get elected to the West Bengal Assembly, the Trinamool Congress received a boost with another BJP MLA joining the ruling party on Saturday, taking the tally of
saffron party MLAs joining the Trinamool camp to four. Kaliaganj MLA Soumen Roy on Saturday joined the Trinamool Congress in Kolkata in the presence of state minister and party leader Partha Chatterjee. Justifying his return to the party, Roy said, “I had to contest from Kaliaganj on a BJP ticket due to some
circumstances. But my soul and heart belong to Trinamool. I joined the party again to support Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s efforts. I apologise to the party for the time I was not with it.” Two other BJP MLAs joined the Trinamool in the past one week -- Tanmoy Ghosh from Bishnupur in Bankura district and Biswajit Das from Bagda in North 24 Parganas district. The first BJP MLA to defect to the Trinamool was Mukul Roy, the party’s national Vice President who had won the elections from Krishnanagar North. While Roy had left Trinamool for the saffron camp in 2017, the other three MLAs were in the ruling party before jumping ship to the BJP just before the Assembly elections held in March-April this year.

NEW DELHI, SEP 4 (PTI): Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao met Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Saturday and requested him to increase the number of IPS officers for the state in view of the creation of more districts and full funding of road works in Naxal-affected areas. ent IPS cadre review as an extraordinary case for approval,” Rao said in a representation made to Shah. He also sought complete funding of road works in the Naxal-affected districts. In the meeting, the CM explained that the state government had reorganised and created 33 districts, two years after the formation of a new state for efficient delivery of welfare and development programmes. The re-organised districts have been recognised by the central government. However, there is an “imminent need” to create territorial posts on account of a new administrative set of police units, he said.

2022 polls: BJP likely to win 4 out of 5 states, survey Kerala’s mainstream parties vying to support Taliban: State BJP chief
NEW DELHI, SEP 4 (AGENCIES): ABP-CVoter survey released its prepoll survey for the upcoming Assembly elections in five states – Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Uttarakhand, Manipur and Goa. The ABPCVoter survey predicted BJP to win in four of the five states going to the polls in early 2022. The poll suggests that the saffron party will return to power in four states– Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Goa and Manipur. All four states have an incumbent NDA government currently. In the Congress-ruled Punjab, according to the ABP-CVoter poll, no single party will cross the majority, however, Aam Aadmi Party is currently leading as the single largest party in Punjab, slightly short of the majority mark. The pre-poll survey indicates that the BJP enjoys popular public support in these four states and may
continue to be in power. However, for the Congress party, the survey comes as a shock. If ABP-CVoter holds true, then the Congress party faces a massive crisis in all the five states that go into the polls early next year, with Punjab and Manipur being the worst-hit states. Uttar Pradesh: In Uttar Pradesh, the BJP alliance is expected to secure a 42 per cent vote share as per the survey figures. SP is a distant second with a vote share projection of 30 per cent vote, and BSP is slated to take third place with just 16 per cent vote. Under the helm of Gandhi-scion Priyanka Gandhi, the Congress party fails to make an impact yet again with just a 5 per cent projected vote share. The BJP is expected to comfortably cross the majority mark with a projected 259-267 seats out of the total 400 seats, accord-
ing to the poll. On the other hand, Akhilesh Yadav-led Samajwadi Party may get 109-117 seats to emerge as the principal opposition party. Uttarakhand: As per the ABP-CVoter poll, the BJP is slated to win the state. The BJP is projected to win a 43 per cent vote share and 44-48 seats out of the 70 seats. On the other hand, Congress is projected to secure around 33 per cent vote, translating into 19-23 seats. The Aam Aadmi Party, which is gaining to make an entry into the hill state, is gaining at the expense of the Congress party. AAP is projected to get around a 15 per cent vote. However, the vote share may not get translated into seat share as AAP may just 0-4 seats, according to the ABP-CVoter survey. Punjab: Punjab – one of the crucial border states, is expected to throw a surprise, as per the ABP-CVot-
er survey. The pre-poll survey suggests that the Aam Aadmi Party may emerge as the single largest party in Punjab with a seat share of 51-57 seats and a vote share of 35 per cent. The Congress party, which is facing a huge crisis due to the infighting between incumbent chief minister Capt. Amarinder Singh and Punjab Congress Chief Navjot Singh Sidhu is staring at a massive defeat if the pre-poll survey is to be believed. The Congress party is expected to win only 38-46 seats as against 77 seats in the last elections. The Congress party may get around 29 per cent vote share. The BJP Punjab may not perform well as expected amidst the backdrop of the farm law protests in the state. BJP is not a major force in Punjab. Manipur: The NDA alliance is slated to win Manipur with a 41 per cent vote
share and 32-36 seats. The BJP-led alliance is slated to beat anti-incumbency in Manipur, according to the ABP-CVoter poll. In Manipur, the Congress party will hold onto its status as the principal opposition party. The Congress party may get 18-22 seats, while NPF may win 2-6 seats. As per the pre-poll survey, BJP is expected to continue its successful run in Northeast India. Congress is facing a leadership deficit and crisis of credibility in the region, just as in the rest of India. Goa: Despite antiincumbency, the BJP is expected to be back at the power in Goa, just like the case of Uttarakhand, this time with more legislators. According to the ABP-CVoter survey, BJP is in the pole position with a projected vote share of 39 per cent and a seat share of 22-26 seats.
Rawat asks people to vote carefully in 2022 DEHRADUN, SEPT 4 (PTI): Former chief minister Harish Rawat on Saturday said a minor slip in voting in 2022 could cost people of people of Uttarakhand their freedom of expression. Describing 2022 Assembly polls in the state as a prelude to the next general elections, he said the Congress’ victory in Uttarakhand in 2022 would pave the way for the formation of a Congress government in Delhi under the leadership
of Rahul Gandhi in 2024. “Even if there is a minor slip in voting, you will lose your freedom of expression and the freedom to make your own choices. In these elections you have to choose between democracy and the forces against it,” he said while addressing a public meeting in Kichha in the course of the party’s Parivartan Yatra. Kiccha was one of the two seats that Rawat had contested and
lost in 2017 polls. The other seat he had lost was Haridwar (rural). “Our government will belong to the poor, the farmers, small businessmen and the unemployed,” Rawat said. He spoke against the three farm laws and the Centre’s alleged intention to finish Mandis and the MSP regime. Accusing successive BJP Chief Ministers in Uttarakhand of making unrealistic promises about
filling up 24,000 vacancies in the state, he said if Congress comes to power at the Centre, one crore youths will be given jobs. He said if voted to power, the Congress would give a subsidy of Rs 200 on LPG cylinders. Accusing the state government of stopping all welfare programmes started during his chief ministership, he said if voted to power, the Congress would revive all of them.
T H I RU VA NA N T H A PURAM, SEP 4 (PTI): BJP state president K Surendran on Saturday alleged that mainstream political parties in Kerala are vying to extend support to Taliban after the terrorist group took control over Afghanistan. Both the ruling CPI(M)-led LDF and the Congress-headed UDF opposition were playing a different sort of politics after the militants were back in power in the neighbouring country, he charged. He further alleged that those who take a pro-Taliban stand were the ones trying to whitewash the Moplah riots that occurred in the state in 1921. “In Kerala, mainstream political parties are
K Surendran
vying with each other to extend support to the Taliban. Political leaders in the state are nurturing religious extremism by giving milk and honey,” Surendran said here in a press meet. Attacking the Left government and its police force, the BJP leader said they were taking an “irresponsible” stand as ex-
tremist forces were gaining strength in the state. He also termed as “serious”, the recent nabbing of a group of Jammu and Kashmir youths with unlicensed firearms in the state. Surendran’s statements assume significance in the wake of the raging debate in Kerala over whether the Malabar Rebellion alias “Moplah (Muslim) Rebellion” reported in the northern part of the state in the year 1921 was a revolt against the British or a communal riot. While the CPI(M) has described the rebellion as the most organised agitation against the exploitation by feudal landlords, the Congress has called it a shining movement against the anti-imperialist forces.

A noble pursuit

ndia celebrates Teacher’s Day on the September 5,the birthday of India’s second President Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan (September 5, 1888 April 17, 1975), a staunch believer in the formal system of education and was most well known as a diplomat, scholar, President of India and above all a teacher. A great scholar, and philosopher, Radhakrishnan was the first Vice President of independent India went on to become the second President after Dr.Rajendra Prasad. The story behind Teachers’ Day is that when Dr Radhakrishan took the office of the second President of India in 1962, his students approached him to seek permission to celebrate September 5 as a special day. Dr Radhakrishnan instead made a request to observe September 5 as Teachers’ Day, to recognise the contribution of teachers to society. Some in Nagaland would vividly remember that it was Dr Radhkrishnan, who as President of India formally inaugurated creation of Nagaland as the sixteenth state under the Indian Union in Kohima on December 1,1963.Teacher’s Day is celebrated at various functions throughout India in a befitting manner, where teachers are honoured and recognised for the vital role they play in educating the future generations. According to some definitions, there are four types of teachers- (a) the mediocre teacher tells,(b) the good teacher explains, (c) the superior teacher demonstrates and (d) the great teacher inspires. The fourth category of teachers make the difference in education and impacting the future. Most students who go on to achieve great things in life invariably remember teachers who have made a big difference during their school or college days. That is why in developed countries, teachers are considered as among the top professionals at par with physicians and lawyers. However, teachers are more than professionals, they mould the minds of their students to achieve great things in life. The education system in Nagaland is as good or bad as the quality of teachers. If education needs to be geared up then it should mean that the gardener, which is the teacher, must know how to properly tend the plant so that its growth is balanced to bear good fruit. Today knowledge, ability and innovation are some of the watchword of any teacher who is relevant to the present context. Quality of teachers is not only academic but transcends to various fields. Today, teachers are academically more qualified than four or five decades ago with the required Bachelors or Masters in Education and other certificates but still, students today are still dependent on private tuitions. Tuitions reflect something that may not be quite right with the education system. Therefore, in order to enhance the quality of teachers, society must insist on investment by institutions. If we want quality teachers, we must be prepared to also invest in them by providing various kinds of higher training on a regular basis so that they are able to address the continual changes in the social and academic environment. Also, teachers must also be paid well and given incentives for achieving goals. In the present context, society must also realise that it has a role in acting as catalysts of change and cannot expect teachers alone in moulding a great future generation, when the socio-political narrative is heavily loaded with a sense of entitlement.
DailyDevotion His!
They were Yours, You gave them to Me… —John 17:6 A missionary is someone in whom the Holy Spirit has brought about this realization: “You are not your own” (1 Corinthians 6:19). To say, “I am not my own,” is to have reached a high point in my spiritual stature. The true nature of that life in actual everyday confusion is evidenced by the deliberate giving up of myself to another Person through a sovereign decision, and that Person is Jesus Christ. The Holy Spirit interprets and explains the nature of Jesus to me to make me one with my Lord, not that I might simply become a trophy for His showcase. Our Lord never sent any of His disciples out on the basis of what He had done for them. It was not until after the resurrection, when the disciples had perceived through the power of the Holy Spirit who Jesus really was, that He said, “Go” (Matthew 28:19; also see Luke 24:49 and Acts 1:8). “If anyone comes to Me and does not hate his father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters, yes, and his own life also, he cannot be My disciple” (Luke 14:26). He was not saying that this person cannot be good and upright, but that he cannot be someone over whom Jesus can write the word Mine. Any one of the relationships our Lord mentions in this verse can compete with our relationship with Him. I may prefer to belong to my mother, or to my wife, or to myself, but if that is the case, then, Jesus said, “[You] cannot be My disciple.” This does not mean that I will not be saved, but it does mean that I cannot be entirely His. Our Lord makes His disciple His very own possession, becoming responsible for him. “…you shall be witnesses to Me…” (Acts 1:8). The desire that comes into a disciple is not one of doing anything for Jesus, but of being a perfect delight to Him. The missionary’s secret is truly being able to say, “I am His, and He is accomplishing His work and His purposes through me.” Be entirely His!

NAGALAND POST, DIMAPUR SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 5, 2021
I
t was 5 September 2012. I was sitting along with the VIPs on the dais enjoying the thousands of students and teachers enthusiastically jam-packed in the NBCC Convention Centre Kohima when I felt SMS alerts in my pocket. Trying to behave gentlemanly, I ignored them, only wishing that the Teachers’ Day celebration will be a great success. This was going to be my last Teachers’ Day celebration as an officer of the department, and I didn’t want to see any failure. The honourable minister who was the chief guest of the day, my respected commissioner & secretary and all the other dignitaries spoke highly of the teachers; praises and thanks poured out in huge volumes. My humble self was in deep thought thinking, “Today, we as teachers are getting great applause, but tomorrow, all these would vanish in thin air.” After the vote of thanks proposed by me, the crowd dispersed, and we wished each other Happy Teachers’ Day and came away. Thereafter, I took out my phone to check the messages, and lo, I received a text from a lady doctor posted outside Nagaland who sent me sweet wishes and thanks saying, “I am what I am
A teacher’s reward
today because of you”. Tears of joy rolled down my cheeks as I reminisced — It was nearly 40 years ago when I taught this young girl and many others. I realized that the cream of my youth spent as a teacher for 11 years had not been in vain. For a graduate in the 70’s to remain a teacher was not considered dignified, though one might have taken up teaching as a hobby. Often, we were asked, “Are you still a teacher?” meaning to say, “Have you not got any better job?” It might have been due to the low salary then. But today, teachers are the highest paid among the class III government employees when measured from the scale. Then came my day to say goodbye to my colleagues with whom I had worked intimately for 32 years and a half. My generous and experienced friends advised me to start my pension papers while still in ‘power’ by using my subordinates to get things done. However, I would tell them, “I was a teacher, I am a teacher, and I will be a teacher in the future too”, that I would start the process only after my retirement and pursue it by myself, and then only could I learn and teach others. It was no doubt a hazardous task
to approach as many as 14 financial institutions/ banks and half a dozen offices/departments besides my own and the Accountant General (AG) for clearance. But wherever I went, I came across past pupils who were either officers or responsible clerks and who happily ran towards me enquiring what had brought me there. They immediately took my papers and asked me not to trouble myself in coming back, meaning that they themselves would do everything for me. And sure enough, within no time all my papers were ready to be sent to AG. One day, incidentally, I met another lady past pupil working in AG. As we talked, she asked if my pension papers were done. When I said it was still with the department, she told me it would be enough to let her know the receipt number, and that she would take care of the rest. When my papers reached AG, the dak-runner of the department in the Secretariat faithfully gave me the receipt number, w h i c h I i m m e d i a t e ly forwarded to the lady asking her when I should come. She replied that the normal procedure would take about two months and asked me not to come as she’d let me know when the need
arose. Within two months everything was cleared, and as she communicated to me, the treasury office set everything ready for what I was entitled to get. On an earlier occasion, with a new Bolero allotted to me by the department, I had gone down to Dimapur to get additional fittings. As the work progressed, the proprietor entertained me with tea and snacks in his air-conditioned room and provided me with newspapers and magazines. He told me to make myself comfortable and left for some other works. After some time, his manager informed me that my works were done. As I took out my wallet to pay the bill at the counter, to my amazement, the proprietor had already instructed him not to charge anything from me as I was his high school teacher and tutor. Embarrassed (as it was not a few hundreds but a large amount of money), I had to get his mobile number and express my gratitude to him. Again, there were t i m e s w h e n I o r my f a m i ly m e m b e r s h a d been admitted to hospitals or undergone major operations. But in all these, except for the medicine cost, no cabin or surgical charges were needed to be
paid because of what the doctors are today and in gratitude for what I was to them several years ago in school. I acknowledge all the love and assistance I have received, but not restricting my appreciation to only these, today I am happy and proud to see so many of my past pupils occupying high and responsible positions in all walks of life. I can only say I am enjoying the fruits of my labour and I am both grateful and humbled by that. The responsibilities being shouldered by the teachers in our institutions are great, complex, and subtle, and to shoulder all with the highest sacrifice and dedication on the part of the teachers is difficult, because other lower creatures can be trained by punishments etc., but the young students — the future leaders of our country — are to be trained with the greatest care, understanding, and above all, LOVE, that only a man or a woman can give. Thus, teachers hold the most important job in molding the future leaders. T h e y a r e, t h e r e f o r e, rightly called builders of tomorrow’s leaders, the backbones of our nation etc. Teachers do deserve such honour. To d a y w e n e e d professional teachers who
can devote their lives for the cause of education. We need teachers who can really be interested in their honourable duty. U n t i l a n d u n l e s s we find one who is really interested and volunteer to be a professional teacher, education cannot be improved. Moder n education is too costly and too fast — for instance, if we look on the side of scientific development, the inventions of the present centur y have doubled up those of the past and it is expected to double up further within a very shor t time. How can we march together with others? Who can train a child to be honest without the sense of corruption? To me, primarily, school education can answer these questions. Dear teachers, the fr uits of hard labour, dedication and selfsacrifice are never lost. What teachers teach today are personified in their students tomorrow. On the occasion of Teachers’ Day, I urge every teacher to rededicate themselves to this noble calling. Happy Teachers’ Day! Vikepelhu Lucas Meyase (This writeup was first published in 2015. Meyase retired as Director of School Education in 2013 and passed away on August 17, 2021.)
The honor of being a teacher My journey with low carbohydrate diet “Teaching is a very noble profession that shapes the character, caliber, and future of an individual. If the people remember me as a good teacher, that will be the biggest honor for me”. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam. hile growing up, the only person we tend to respect after our parents, are our teachers. Because the greatest lessons are learnt in the classroom. Even though many times we feel that they are a waste, but somewhere after a decade, everything starts coming into practicality, and hence our bookish lessons come to life. Chanakya, a minister in the Maurya dynasty and one of the greatest teachers off all times, spoke about the need for teachers in nation building. He said that this nation will become independent, liberal and forward, when the teachers it has guides it properly. A teacher will become successful when he will be able to build the character of a person more than anything. He went on to speak about how a teacher was unable to teach his students properly, if they did not understand the importance of nation building. Dr Radhakrishnan, one of the most erudite Presidents of our country has had, preferred to be known as a teacher than as the President of the country, and the country today pays him the greatest tribute by celebrating his birthday as the Teachers’ Day! Teaching is primarily a mission and a commitment! Moulding the mind of a child is a noble mission. We deal with human beings, and no two individuals are the same. We have to handle each of our students with the utmost care. Fragile, handle with care is the norm here. A teacher should be able to discipline his/her student with love and understanding, always helping the student to discover the hidden talents within, and develop them. Abraham Lincoln wrote once to his son’s teacher “Most Respected Teacher, My son starts school today. It is all going to be strange and new to him for a while and I wish you would treat him gently. It is an adventure that might take him across continents. All adventures that probably include wars, tragedy and sorrow. To live this life will require faith, love and courage. So dear Teacher, will you please take him by his hand and teach him things he will have to know, teaching him - but gently, if you can. Teach him that for every enemy, there is a friend.
W
He will have to know that all men are not just, that all men are not true. But teach him also that for every scoundrel there is a hero that for every crooked politician, there is a dedicated leader. Teach him if you can that 10 cents earned is of far more value than a dollar found. In school, teacher, it is far more honorable to fail than to cheat. Teach him to learn how to gracefully lose, and enjoy winning when he does win. Teach him to be gentle with people, tough with tough people. Steer him away from envy if you can and teach him the secret of quiet laughter. Teach him if you can -how to laugh when he is sad, teach him there is no shame in tears. Teach him there can be glory in failure and despair in success. Teach him to scoff at cynics. Teach him if you can the wonders of books, but also give time to ponder the extreme mystery of birds in the sky, bees in the sun and flowers on a green hill. Teach him to have faith in his own ideas, even if everyone tells him they are wrong. Try to give my son the strength not to follow the crowd when everyone else is doing it. Teach him to listen to everyone, but teach him also to filters all that he hears on a screen of truth and take only the good that comes through. Teach him to sell his talents and brains to the highest bidder but never to put a price tag on his heart and soul. Let him have the courage to be impatient, let him have the patient to be brave. Teach him to have sublime faith in himself, because then he will always have sublime faith in mankind, in God. This is the order, teacher but see what best you can do. He is such a nice little boy and he is my son.” Conclusion: Teaching is many things to many people, but to me, “noble” is laden with images of royalty, classism, and oppression. I prefer to think of teaching as an ethical profession in which the teacher makes choices for the betterment of their students. Good teaching is ethical, analytic, and reflective. The best teacher will tell you that as they teach their mind is constantly analyzing content, response, and pedagogical method. This ensures the growth of the students as well as the growth of the teacher. Teachers, you are precious to us! Rev. Fr. C. Joseph, Counsellor St. Joseph’s College (Autonomous) Jakhama, Nagaland
O
ur life on this earth is brief, the best way to make it worthwhile is to live meaningfully. And there will not be much time to make it meaningful unless one is healthy. An unhealthy body breaks down an individual’s physical, spiritual and mental health, no matter how hard one tries to stay above it. More often than not, we take our health as granted. But once the body succumbs to poor health and illness, one is forced to realize that nothing, neither wealth, nor fame nor power matters. The maxim, “Health is wealth,” could not be truer. “The first wealth is health,” was stated by Ralph Waldo Emerson, an American philosopher. My journey with “Low Carbohydrate Diet”, also popularly known as ‘Keto,’ began a month back. Some may feel it is too early to go on a discourse, but I could not hold myself back from sharing, about the positive changes it brought in my overall health, in a brief span. I have always been health conscious and I have been trying my best to eat healthy and exercise. My sugar level is well maintained, with fasting blood sugar at 90-95 mg/dl and random 110 -129 mg/dl. However I had a mild heart attack, few years back, which made me rethink about my health status. On medical advice, I was asked to undergo an “Insulin Level Test” at Imphal and then onward submission to Kolkata. I was shocked when the reports came in, as normal insulin index shown was 3-5, whereas mine stood at 20.95, indicating serious repercussion on my
heart health. No wonder I was feeling less energetic, problem with body balance and agility, my hands and feet also felt stiff, in the past. I learnt that presence of excess carbohydrate in the body caused dangerous blood thickening and clogged arteries. That is when I shifted to this “Low Carb Diet”. “Low Carbohydrate Diet” is good for the heart, as it increases good cholesterol levels, decreases blood pressure a n d t r i g lyc e r i d e s l eve l s, according to researchers. For the uninitiated, “Low Carbohydrate Diet”, as the name suggests, generally means restriction on carbohydrate consumption relative to one’s average diet. Foods high on carbohydrate is limited and replaced with high fat and protein rich diet. Eg: Meat, fish, poultry, eggs, cheese, nuts etc as well as plenty of green leafy and fibre rich vegetables, such as cucumber, ladies finger, radish, fresh beans, brinjal, chayote and its leaves, fruits like pears, green apple or any fruit which has no sweetness etc. No one can tell the exact measure, but the American Academy of Family Physicians specifies less than 20% of carbohydrate content. I quickly gave up, mango, banana, jack fr uit, apple, pomegranate, papaya, water melon, potato, carrot, dal, rice, bread, sugar to name a few. Vegetables, fish, and meat and green or black tea, without sugar took centre stage. Within five days, I felt better and regained my energy level, stamina, besides significant improvement in body balance and experienced weight loss. I can vouch that I am much more active, energetic, with a
better digestion. It is indeed true that people taking low carb diet experience more weight loss, than those people taking low fat diet. Mine has reduced from 76 to 70 kgs in a matter of 19 days. As per information available on the net, the American Diabetes Association (ADA) states, “Reducing overall carbohydrate intake for individuals with diabetes has demonstrated the most evidence for improving glycemia (blood sugar) and may be applied in a variety of eating patterns that meet individual needs and preferences.” The US News and World Report reviewed it as the “4th best weight loss diets.” Carbohydrates, fats and proteins are the three main nutrients. The “Ketogenic Diet” is based on the premise that when the body is deprived o f g l u c o s e d e r ive d f r o m carbohydrate foods, it will produce energy from stored fat. Foods to avoid are sugar and starchy foods like bread, pasta, rice, dry beans and potatoes. Foods with the go ahead are meat, fish, eggs, vegetables growing above ground and natural fats like butter. However, people wanting to incorporate a “Low Carb Diet” should not jump into it impulsively, but first consult a dietician or a person who h a s t h e ex p e r i e n c e. T h e positive outcome from the “Keto Diet” has benefitted me, miraculously, so much that I felt an obligation to share it with anyone who might have struggled like me with regard to their heart health and diabetes, and in the hope that they find means to benefit from it. Teaching as a responsibility Sir,
Teachers are arguably the most important members of our society. The children of today are the leaders of tomorrow, and teachers are that critical point that makes a child ready for their future. While we know all these, I would also like to point out how vital it is for teaching to not be looked just as a profession but as a responsibility. It also is important to document and understand what specific characteristics of teachers, and the school settings in which they work, contribute to successful student outcomes in order to help determine how better to educate and support successful teachers. drug trade. Amarinder had promised to end the curse of drugs within a month of coming to power. He had sworn this with a gutka (a sacred collection of Sikh hymns and Gurbani) in his hand. While the move seems to have helped Amarinder win the elections, nothing has really changed on the ground. Sources who are privy to what transpired during the meeting add that Rawat also questioned Amarinder on why no action had been taken on a report submitted by the STF to the Punjab and Haryana High Court on
Majithia’s alleged role in the drug trade. Affordable power and PPA agreements Sidhu and his supporters are also upset that the CM has not fulfilled his promise of providing affordable power. They add that Amarinder had not annulled the power purchase agreements (PPAs) signed during the Akali-BJP rule with private entities, from whom the government is continuing to buy expensive power. They are demanding that the PPAs be annulled by Amarinder through a legislation. Rawat was told that

HYDERABAD, SEP 4 (PTI): Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu on Saturday called upon the people to fight against divisive forces that seek to divide society on the lines of religion, region, language, caste, creed or colour. In the 75th year of the country’s Independence, every Indian must take a pledge to further strengthen unity and harmony in the country’s hugely diverse society, he said. Naidu, who was addressing the students and teachers of Sri Aurobindo International School here after inaugurating a photoexhibition on the life of Sri Aurobindo, emphasised that bridging all divisions was necessary for the greatness of India’s future.
Highlighting the positive aspects of religion, he said if everyone follows one’s religion in true spirit, there will not be any religious conflict, an official release said. Responding to a student’s question, he said reforms were needed in the United Nations so that it becomes a truly representative organisation where the soul and heart of the nations come together. Expressing disapproval of some nations mentality to consider themselves as superior to others, he said equal respect for all is a prerequisite to bring unity of mankind. “Separate identities are going to be there but these identities should not divide us,” he said.
F I RO Z A BA D, S E P 4 (PTI): Several senior officials of the Uttar Pradesh government on Saturday visited the state-run medical college here and interacted with patients of dengue and viral fever. The visit comes after death toll due to dengue and viral fever in the district mounted to 50 on Friday. The officials, including Principal Secretary (Medical Education) Alok Kumar, also went to Salai primary health centre and then to Abbas Nagar, one of the affected areas. Kumar later got 8-yearold Hashmi and 11-year-old Zeenat from Abbas Nagar admitted to the medical college here. Nodal officer Sudhir Kumar Bobde also visited the medical college and other affected areas. District Magistrate Chandra Vijay Singh instructed officials of the municipal corporation and health department to ensure that stagnant water, especially in coolers, is drained out.
annulment of the PPAs was not legally possible because it was an agreement between the Punjab government, the Centre and a private party and any move in the assembly or otherwise would invite litigation. Sacrilege incidents and action against Badals Several MLAs have also turned against Amarinder because they believe that he has not been able to ensure justice for Sikhs in the sacrilege cases. Multiple incidents of sacrilege of the Guru Granth Sahib, considered to be a living guru by the Sikhs, took place in 2015 and the then ruling Akali Dal-BJP government failed to nab the culprits. To make matters worse, during widespread protests against the government, two youths were killed in police firing. The sacrilege and police firing incidents are believed to have led to the Akalis’ losing power to the Congress. Amarinder politically cashed in on the
seething anger against then chief minister Parkash Singh Badal and his son and deputy CM Sukhbir Singh Badal and promised to nab not just those responsible for the sacrilege but also make the Badals pay for ordering the police firing on protesters. Farm laws and farmers’ agitation Rawat also discussed the possibility of the chief minister bringing in legislation in the Punjab assembly to undo the impact of the three central farm laws. He reminded the CM of his path-breaking move of terminating the multipartite water sharing agreements in 2004 during his first tenure as chief minister. Transport permits to the Badals Another point of contention has been that Amarinder has “allowed” private buses owned by the Badals to run in the state on populous route permits, which the Badals allegedly procured for themselves when they were in power.
Athawale bats for one-child norm
AHMEDABAD, SEP 4 (PTI): Union social justice minister Ramdas Athawale on Saturday said his party supports one-child policy as the population growth in the country needs to be controlled for ensuring development. Asked about a recent remark of Gujarat deputy Chief Minister Nitin Patel that people would be able to talk about Constitution and secularism only so long as Hindus are in majority, he said there was no possibility of Hindu population dwindling. “I do not think there is any question of Hindu population declining. Hindus remain Hindu and Muslims remain Muslim. Hardly one or two Hindus or Muslims convert. The Constitution gives people the right to do what they like, but nobody can force any person to covert,” Athawale said, speaking to reporters here. There would not be much change in the proportion of Hindus and Muslims in the population, he said, adding that “it is not the case that the population of Muslims has risen sharply

NEW DELHI, SEP 4 (IANS): The Chief Justice of India, N.V. Ramana, on Saturday thanked the Centre for clearing the names of nine judges in record six days after they were recommended for elevation to the top court by the collegium, and emphasised that he expects the names of judges for appointment at various high courts are also cleared in the same speed. “You all gave credit to me for the appointments. But this is not my credit... I am not (Sachin) Tendulkar,
the entire team has to work together, only then we will win the match,” Ramana said. The CJI was speaking at a felicitation function organised here by the Bar Council of India. It was attended by Law Minister Kiran Rijiju and several top court judges, days after the appointment of three women judges, including a future woman Chief Justice, and six other judges at one go in the top court. NEW DELHI, SEP 4 (PTI): The highly successful Jan Aashirwad Yatra, a public outreach by 39 new Union ministers, has left the opposition “disturbed and nervous”, BJP president J P Nadda said on Saturday and accused it of trying to hinder the programme. People continue to show “unflinching support and trust” in the Modi government, he said in a statement.
“All ploys and disturbances have failed to shake the strong support and trust that the people have showered on the Narendra Modi government,” Nadda said, hitting out at the Maharashtra government for targeting Union Minister Narayan Rane. Rane was arrested by the Maharashtra police for his comments against Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray while on the Yatra. “It is a direct attack on

From the point of view of law it has ended, but it continues to exist in the minds of people,” he said. He will ask Rupani to take special measures for the protection of Dalits, he added. NEW DELHI, SEP 4 (IANS): Automobile demand recovery has been weaker than expected post the lifting of second lockdown in June 2021, said Motilal Oswal Financial Services Limited (MOFSL). Accordingly, while PVs (passenger vehicles) continue to witness healthy recovery, whereas two-wheelers and CVs (commercial vehicles) are subdued. “The outlook for tractors is also muted, especially considering the high base of 2HFY21,” the report said. “Additionally, the semiconductor shortage is intensifying, with 2QFY22 likely to see the worst impact. While there is hope that semi-conductor supplies would improve in 2HFY22, OEMs and vendors are currently living by the day.”
Besides, the report pointed out that financing has been getting stringent for CVs and two-wheelers. “Lastly, commodity prices seem to be stabilising for now. Coupled with price increases taken and costcutting initiatives, EBITDA margins should start looking up from 2HFY22.” In terms of sectoral picks, MOFSL prefers ‘4Ws’ over ‘2Ws’ as ‘PVs’ is the least impacted segment currently and offers a stable competitive environment. “We expect the CV cycle to recover and gain momentum towards 2HFY22.” “In our estimates, we build in strong recovery in 2HFY22 and beyond, with FY22 growth at 16 per cent, 28 per cent, 28 per cent, 55 per cent, 4 per cent for 2W, PV, LCV, M&HCV, Tractors.”

KAAC has 44 seats and the Central and Assam governments would take necessary steps to reserve 34 of them for STs and 10 seats under open category for all communities. The two governments may consider enhancing budgetary provisions for KAAC to undertake development activities keeping in view population and topography of the area. District Magistrates and Superintendents of Police of the districts within KAAC would be posted in consultation with the chief executive member of KAAC. The Assam government would create a post of Deputy Inspector General of Police, exclusively for the hill districts. Similarly, the Assam government may consider conferring ST (Hill) status to Karbis living outside Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council area. It would set up a Karbi Welfare Council for focused development of Karbis living outside Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council area.
Further, he opined that the North East region can be united only through politics and not by religion, linguistic, culture, caste or creed. On NPP’s stand on the Naga political issue, Ahoto said if the present government was serious about the political issue, then it should have hold regular consultative meetings with civil societies, Hohos, NGOs and tribal organisations. The state NPP chief also dared the present government to step down if it was truly concerned about the Naga political issue and fulfil its vow to pave way for solution. Ahoto also said NPP will fight for solution unlike the PDA government, which he claimed “has built a strong wall, and not a bridge.” He also said “No solution is a solution for the PDA government.” NPP member, Deo Nukhu commented that the recent consultative meeting called by the chief minister with all tribal Hohos was not appropriate as the Naga Hoho was not taken into confidence. He was of the view that Naga Hoho was considered as the apex body, covering all Nagas, not only of Nagaland but every region. Claiming that the “Indo-Naga” political issue was not Nagaland problem alone, but a Naga problem, Nukhu asserted that the present state government was narrowing down the Naga issue only for the Nagas of Nagaland and not Nagas of other regions.

NEW DELHI, SEP 4 (PTI): Taking on Infosys over glitches in the GST and Income Tax portals developed by it, RSS-associated weekly Panchjanya launched a scathing attack on the domestic software company and wondered that whether any “anti-national power is trying to hurt India’s economic interests through it”. In its latest edition, Panchjanya is carrying a four-page cover story on Infosys ‘Saakh Aur Aghaat’ (Reputation and Damage) and with its founder Narayana Murthy’s picture on cover page. The article has attacked the Bengaluru-based company and dubbed it as ‘Unchi Dukan, Phika Pakwaan’ (great cry and little wool). Terming the article as “anti-national”, Congress leader Jairam Ramesh in a tweet said it is an attempt to shift the blame from the government and deserves to be wholeheartedly condemned.
Sangma reiterated that an oppositionless government was harmful not just for democracy but for the state, its governance, administration, and the entire legislative process. Sangma asserted that it was necessary to have a strong opposition that was constructive in its approach as this made democracy vibrant. Asked about the NPP strategy for the forthcoming assembly elections, Sangma said it was the party’s duty to ensure that platforms were created so voices and concerns of the people were heard. He also stated that NPP would be the party to take up citizens’ issues, which other parties were unwilling. On the ongoing court case against two NPP MLAs who merged with Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party (NDPP), Sangma said since it was still pending with the Supreme Court and sub judice, therefore, it would not be proper for him to make any comment. Sangma, said the matter was being pursued by its legal team and was optimistic that his party will win the case. Also, addressing the press conference, NPP Nagaland unit president, Dr. Andrew Ahoto, said his party will stand with the people and make their voices heard, since this was possible only through a national party like NPP.

Fresh fighting in final anti-Taliban stronghold L O N D O N / I S L A M A BA D, S E P 4 (AGENCIES/REUTERS/ PTI): Fresh fighting has been reported in Afghanistan’s Panjshir Valley, the final pocket of territory which remains out of the hands of the Taliban. One of the resistance l e a d e r s i n t h e va l l e y, Amrullah Saleh, dismissed reports that the Taliban had captured it as “baseless”. But he admitted conditions are difficult, with the Taliban closing phone, internet and electricity lines. The fighting comes with the Taliban set to finalise a government. Panjshir Valley, north of the capital Kabul, is one of Afghanistan’s smallest provinces and the only one not to have fallen to the Taliban. The traditional antiTaliban stronghold is home to somewhere between 150,000 and 200,000 people, and is hidden behind mountain peaks. The resistance - which includes former Afghan security force members and local militias - is led by local tribal leader Ahmad Massoud. His father successfully fought the Soviets who invaded in the 1980s, and the Taliban in the 1990s. In a video message

Pak ISI chief rushes to Kabul
Thousands are reported to be taking part in the fighting in Panjshir.
sent to the BBC, Mr Saleh, a former vice-president of Afghanistan, said there had been casualties on both sides. “There is no doubt we are in a difficult situation. We are under invasion by the Taliban,” he said, adding that his forces would not surrender. But resistance leaders concede that some districts have fallen to the Taliban, while pro-Taliban social media showed clips seeming to show their fighters with captured tanks and other military gear. Ru m o u r s t h a t t h e Ta l i b a n h a d c a p t u r e d Panjshir prompted celebratory gunfire to ring
out in Kabul and other cities, reportedly killing a number of people. A Taliban spokesman said fighters should “avoid firing in the air and thank God instead”.
At least 17 killed in celebratory gunfire
At least 17 people were killed in celebratory gunfire in Kabul, news agencies said on Saturday, after Taliban sources said their fighters had seized control of Panjshir, the last province in Afghanistan holding out against the Islamist group. Leaders of opposition to the Taliban have denied that the province has fallen. The Shamshad
news agency said “aerial shooting” in Kabul on Friday killed 17 people and wounded 41. Tolo news agency gave a similar toll. At least 14 people were injured in celebratory firing in Nangarhar province east of the capital, said Gulzada Sangar, spokesman for an area hospital in the provincial capital of Jalalabad. The gunfire drew a rebuke from the main Ta l i b a n s p o k e s m a n , Zabihullah Mujahid. “Avoid shooting in the air and thank God instead,” Mujahid said in a message on Twitter. “Bullets can harm civilians, so don’t shoot unnecessarily.”
In a surprise move, Pakistan’s powerful intelligence chief Lieutenant General Faiz Hameed on Saturday dashed to Kabul, according to media reports here, amidst the Taliban struggling to finalise and install an inclusive government in Afghanistan that would be acceptable to the international community. A delegation of senior Pakistani officials led by Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) Director General Lieutenant General Hameed arrived in Kabul to conduct discussions with the incoming Taliban government, the Pakistan Observer newspaper reported. The ISI chief is expected to meet top Taliban leaders and commanders. “Issues relating to Pak-Afghan security, economy, and other matters will be taken up with the Taliban leadership,” the report said, quoting sources. According to the Express Tribune, Hameed will also meet Pakistan’s envoy in Kabul to discuss the matter of repatriation and transit through Pakistan of foreign nationals and Afghans fleeing Taliban rule.
Taliban again postpone govt formation
The Taliban have postponed the formation of a new government in Afghanistan for next week, their spokesman Zabiullah Mujahid said on Saturday, as the insurgent group struggles to give shape to a broadbased and inclusive administration acceptable to the international community. This is the second time that the Taliban have delayed the formation of the new government in Kabul since their toppling of the US-backed Afghanistan government. The insurgent group was expected to announce the formation of the new government led by its co-founder Mulla Abdul Ghani Baradar on Friday, but later postponed it by a day to Saturday. Hameed’s visit to Kabul came as Army chief General Qamar Javed Bajwa met with British Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab earlier in the day and said that Pakistan will assist in the formation of an inclusive administration in Afghanistan. Raab arrived in Islamabad on Thursday night to meet top Pakistani leadership and discuss the Afghanistan situation.
Secret funeral plans for Queen Elizabeth II leaked
LONDON, SEP 4 (PTI): Leaked documents have revealed for the first time on Friday the extent of the huge operation that will be launched in the hours and days after Britain’s Queen Elizabeth II dies. Details of what will happen under the codename “Operation London Bridge” were leaked to US-headquartered news organisation, Politico, which reports that officials will refer to the day the Queen dies as “D Day”. The 95-year-old monarch, the longestserving in British history, is to be buried 10 days after she dies and her son and heir, Prince Charles, will embark on a tour of the UK before the burial is held. According to the plans, the late sovereign’s coffin will lie in state for three days at the Houses of Parliament, with authorities anticipating hundreds of thousands of people to descend on London — sparking fears over gridlock, policing and even food shortages. A vast security operation has been planned to manage the unprecedented crowds and travel chaos that are expected in the lead-up to her funeral. One memo warns that London could be

stretched to breaking point as hundreds of thousands of people make their way to the UK capital. There will be a supposedly “spontaneous” service at St Paul’s Cathedral, according to Politico, and the new King Charles will tour the four nations of the United Kingdom in the days after her death. The British prime minister and the monarch are said to be in agreement that the day of her state funeral will be a day of national mourning. It will effectively be a holiday, although not described as such. Buckingham Palace officials have declined to comment, either on the leak or the plans. In 2017, The Guardian published a long article revealing details about Operation London Bridge, which covered how the new King (Charles) will be proclaimed at St James’s Palace amid visiting royalty.

LONDON, SEP 4 (AGENCIES): New Zealand PM Jacinda Ardern has vowed to toughen anti-terror laws following Friday’s knife attack in Auckland by a man who was under police surveillance. “We must be willing to make the changes that we know may not necessarily have changed history, but could change the future,” she said at a news briefing, BBC reported. The man, a Sri Lankan national, stabbed seven people in a supermarket. Three of them are in a critical condition. The attacker, a known supporter of Islamic State, was shot dead by police. Ms Ardern, who described the stabbings as a “terrorist attack”, said she expected that changes to the country’s counter-terrorism legislation would be backed by parliament by the end of September. The attacker had been arrested a number of times before Friday’s incident. But Ms Ardern said that every legal avenue to keep him out of the community had been exhausted. lumps of brain cells g rown from the stem cells of two people with a neurological syndrome show signs of the disorder. The results, published August 23 in Nature Neuroscience, suggest that personalized brain organoids could be powerful tools to understand complex disorders. Researchers are eager to create brain organoids, human stem cells coaxed into becoming 3-D blobs of brain cells, because of their ability to mimic human brains in the lab (SN: 2/20/18). In the current study, researchers grew two kinds of brain organoids. One kind, grown from healthy people’s stem cells, produced complex electrical activity that echoed the K Y M C
brain waves a full-sized brain makes. These waves, created by the coordinated firing of many nerve cells, are part of how the brain keeps information moving (SN: 3/13/18). The researchers also grew organoids using cells from a 25-year-old woman and a 5-year-old girl with Rett syndrome, a developmental disorder marked by seizures, autism and developmental lags. Rett syndrome is thought to be caused by changes in a gene called MECP2, mutations that the lab-grown organoids carried as well. These organoids looked like those grown from healthy people, but behaved differently in some ways. (ScienceNews)

Alcaraz, Fernandez upset Tsitsipas, Osaka
N E W YO R K , S E P 4 (AFP/PTI): Defending champion Naomi Osaka of Japan and Greek third seed Stefanos Tsitsipas were both ousted from the US Open by 18-year-olds in epic stunners on Friday at Arthur Ashe Stadium. Fo u r - t i m e G r a n d Slam champion Osaka was shocked by Canadian lefthander Leylah Fernandez 5-7, 7-6 (7/2), 6-4 after Spain’s Carlos Alcaraz upset French Open runner-up Tsitsipas 6-3, 4-6, 7-6 (7/2), 0-6, 7-6 (7/5). “Honestly the Alcaraz match gave me motivation and gave me the energy to do the same,” Fernandez said. “I saw his match and I saw the way he won and I’m like ‘I’m going to do that next now.’” Shock followed shock as defending champion Osaka, in a tearful news conference after the loss, announced she was taking a break from playing tennis. Osaka, who had won her prior 16 Grand Slam matches, was foiled in a bid for her third US Open crown in four years and the first back-to-back titles since Serena Williams in 2014. round since 17-year-old American Michael Chang in 1989 and at any Slam since Ukraine’s Andrei Medvedev in the 1992 French Open. “Incredible. Incredible feeling for me,” Alcaraz said. “This victory means a lot to me. It’s the best match of my career, the best win. “To beat Stefanos Tsitsipas is a dream come true and to win here is even more special for me.” Osaka, who hadn’t played since Monday thanks to a second-round walkover, took the first set in 37 minutes on her sixth ace.
Raikkonen out of Dutch GP with Covid
Kimi Raikkonen
LONDON, SEP 4 (AGENCIES): Alfa Romeo driver Kimi Raikkonen has tested positive for Covid-19 and will miss this weekend’s Dutch Grand Prix. The 41-year-old Finn, who this week announced he will retire from F1 at the end of the season, will be replaced by reserve driver Robert Kubica. A l f a Ro m e o s a i d : “Kimi is displaying no symptoms and is in good spirits. He has immediately entered isolation” Kubica last raced at the end of the 2019 season for Williams but has tested for Alfa a number of times this year. An Alfa Romeo spokesman said: “We ran
a thorough close contacts check and I’m glad to say there is no further impact to our operations for the rest of the weekend.” F1’s governing body the FIA has strict Covid protocols which require the immediate isolation and then retesting of anyone designated a close contact of someone who has a positive test result. Alfa said that “all close contacts have been sorted according to the FIA protocols”. Williams chief executive officer and team principle Jost Capito had dinner with Raikkonen on Friday night and, as a close contact, is now isolating in his hotel room. F1 applies the national guidelines of the country in which the individual race is being held and in the Netherlands the requirement is only to have to isolate as a close contact if a person is not vaccinated. The vast majority of F1 personnel have received a Covid-19 vaccine.
Leylah Fernandez
But Osaka was broken in the 12th game of the second set, an errant forehand sending her to a tie-breaker. That began a sequence of repeated racquet smashing by Osaka as she was humbled in the tie-break to force a third set. Fernandez, the daughter of an Ecuadorian father and Filipino-Canadian mother who turns 19 on Monday, hit a forehand winner to break Osaka to start the third set. Osaka saved two break points to hold in the third game and from there both
held to the finish, which came after two hours and four minutes, sending Fernandez against German 16th seed Angelique Kerber in her first Grand Slam fourth round appearance. “It’ll be a battle,” Fernandez said. “We’re just going to have fun. I’ll put on a show like I did tonight.” Fernandez, who won her first WTA title in March at Monterrey, had never beaten so high-ranked a rival as third-rated Osaka and the same was true for Alcaraz when he sent home the men’s world number three.
The Indo-American pair of Sania Mirza and Rajeev Ram made a first round exit from the US Open mixed doubles event after losing to Dayana Yastremska from Ukraine and Australia’s Max Purcell. The unseeded Mirza and Ram lost 3-6 6-3 7-10 to their opponents in just 61 minutes on Friday night. Mirza and Ram could convert only one of the three break chances that came their way while the winners converted the only breakpoint they got in the match. With this defeat, Mirza’s campaign folded at the last Grand Slam of the season as she had already crashed out of the women’s doubles event after losing the first round with American partner Coco Vandeweghe. India’s Rohan Bopanna is still alive in the competition. Bopanna and his Croatian partner Ivan Dodig are scheduled to play their men’s doubles second round against Hugo Nys from Monaco and Arthur Rinderknech from France.
Repeat racism offenders should be kicked out, says Gareth Bale LONDON, SEP 4 (REUTERS): Wales captain Gareth Bale on Saturday called for countries whose fans are repeat racism offenders to be banned from international football after reported abuse towards England’s Raheem Sterling and Jude Bellingham against Hungary in Budapest on Thursday. Speaking ahead of his side’s World Cup qualifier against Belarus on Sunday, the Real Madrid winger questioned the long investigations that habitually follow such incidents and demanded more immediate action. “I don’t know the severity of what to do to but the easiest thing is ... whether you ban the fans from the stadium or if they keep repeatedly doing it, which seems to be what is happening, then you ban the country from the competition,” said the 32-year-old.
Gareth Bale
“If that country keeps making these horrible gestures, then maybe the best thing to do is to get rid of them, give them a suspension and hopefully they will learn their lesson that way.” FIFA has opened disciplinary proceedings in relation to the incidents in Budapest which have been condemned by the Professional Footballers’
Association as well as British Prime Minister Boris Johnson. Bale added that his players would have his full backing if they chose to walk off in reaction to any racial abuse during the game against Belarus in Kazan. After facing Belarus, Wales takes on Estonia at home on September 8.

Osaka to take another break from Tennis after US Open exit
N E W YO R K , S E P 4 (AGENCIES): Naomi Osaka says she will take another break from tennis after her US Open title defence ended in the third round. The world number three lost 5-7 7-6 (7-2) 6-4 to 18-year-old Leylah Fernandez. Osaka withdrew from this year’s French Open after revealing she has struggled with her mental health since first becoming a Grand Slam champion in 2018. The 23-year-old also
missed Wimbledon before returning to the sport at the Tokyo Olympics, where she lit the flame at the opening ceremony. “I feel like I’m kind of at this point where I’m trying to figure out what I want to do,” Osaka said in a post-match news conference, in which she became increasingly tearful. “I honestly don’t know when I’m going to play my next tennis match. I think I’m going to take a break from playing for a while.
Ben Stokes could miss T20 World Cup in the UAE
Tait to coach Pondicherry
LONDON, SEP 4 (IANS): England all-rounder Ben Stokes could miss the men’s T20 World Cup in Oman and the UAE in October and November. Stokes has been on an indefinite break from all forms of cricket since July to take care of his mental well-being and give time to his left index finger to heal after surgery. Stokes is not a part of the ongoing five-match Test series against India and will not take part in the second leg of IPL 2021 starting from September 19. West Indies pacer Oshane Thomas has been called in as a replacement for Stokes in Rajasthan Royals. “Whether he does travel to Dubai to feature in England’s attempts to unite both global white-ball belts next month is unclear, although sources close to Stokes say ‘he is not even thinking about cricket at the moment’,” said a report by the Daily Mail on Saturday.
NEW DELHI, SEP 4 (AGENCIES): Former Australian pacer Shaun Tait will be the bowling coach of the Pondicherry cricket team for the upcoming domestic season. Tait, who is also the bowling coach of the Afghanistan cricket team, will be the lone foreign coach in the Indian domestic circuit. India look to raise the level against Nepal in second international friendly
KATHMANDU, SEP 4 (PTI): Held by a lowly Nepal in their last match, the Indian men’s football team would settle for nothing less than a victory in the second international friendly against the Himalayan nation here on Sunday. Worse, Indian football team is not at all happy with the training facilities provided by the host country. At 105, India are ranked much above the
“I feel like for me recently, when I win I don’t feel happy. I feel more like a relief. And then when I lose, I feel very sad. I don’t think that’s normal.” Osaka was on course for a straight-sets victory when she broke Fernandez’s serve for a 6-5 second set lead. But a string of forehand errors cost her her serve and the ensuing tiebreak, during which she uncharacteristically threw her racquet on the floor.

debut Games. “I’m very happy,” said Narwal who hails from Ballabhgarh in Haryana. Narwal had a keen interest in sports from childhood and grew up wanting to become a football player. Unfortunately, he could not fulfil his footballing dreams due to a congenital ailment in his right hand. His wrestler father Dilbagh tried doing anything to make sure that his son’s deformity did not hold him back. In 2016, on the suggestion of a family friend, Dilbagh took Narwal to a nearby shooting range at Ballabhgarh run by coach Rakesh Thakur. That
changed Narwal’s life and he instantly developed a keen interest in the sport and started doing practice regularly. At that time he did not know about Paralympic Games but his talent was spotted by coach Jai Prakash Nautiyal. Narwal won gold medal in P1 and silver in P4 in 2018 Asian Para Games in Jakarta. The 39-year-old Adana, who competes with p o l i o - i m p a i r e d l owe r limbs, created a piece of history as he joins the elite list of Indians who have won multiple medals in the same edition of the Games. while Manoj Sarkar bagged a bronze after defeating Japan’s Daisuke Fujihara in the third place play-off. In SL3 classification, athletes with lower limb impairment compete. The top seeded Bhagat, also Asian champion, showed great mental fortitude as he prevailed 21-14 21-17 over second seeded Bethell in a thrilling final that lasted 45 minutes. “This is ver y special to me, it’s my dream come true. Bethell really pushed me but I just kept my calm and played to my strengths,” said Bhagat after wining India’s fourth gold medal in the Games. “I would like to dedi-

Shah felicitates Olympic medallist Chanu NEW DELHI, SEP 4 (PTI): Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Saturday felicitated Olympic medallist Mirabai Chanu here for bringing laurels to the country in weightlifting and exhorted her not to be content with the silver medal and to aim for gold next time. The 27-year-old sportsperson, appointed as an additional superintendent of police in her home state Manipur after the recent win at the summer games, was honoured during the 51st Raising Day celebrations of the Bureau of Police Research and Development (BPR&D), a central government think tank. Shah presented the athlete with a shawl and memento. He said Chanu brought honour for the country by winning a medal at the Tokyo Olympic games and is now a proud member of the police force. “I thank her for her hardwork and dedication,” the home minister added. “When I met her on

the stage to honour her, I wished her success. Everyone, from the prime minister of the country to the common man, has applauded her and rejoiced in her victory.” “I want to tell her that she should not be content with a silver medal but should now aim for a gold. The entire country is waiting for it,” Shah said. He acknowledged the “struggles” undertaken by Chanu mentioning that she
used to take “lift” in trucks to reach the place where she trained. Shah said much more needed to be done for athletes in terms of providing them facilities. The BPR&D had earlier said that this honour for the Olympic winner was “a small gesture to welcome her to the fraternity on behalf of the Indian police.” Chanu had clinched a silver medal in the 49kg category weightlifting that opened India’s account at the re-
cently-concluded Tokyo Olympics. India won a total of seven medals at these games. The home minister also gave away trophies and medals for excellence in training to winner states/ union territories and central police organisations and forces, and seven authors who wrote on policing subjects in Hindi. The BPR&D, an organisation under the Ministry of Home Affairs, was founded in August 1970.
4th Test: Rohit scores ton as India finish day 3 on 270/3 TTFI questions Manika’s timing of LONDON, SEP 4 (PTI): Rohit Sharma scored a gritty 127 while Cheteshwar Pujara contributed an useful 61 in India’s commendable second innings score of 270 for 3 against England at stumps on the third day of the fourth Test. A determined Rohit Sharma showed exceptionally steely temperament to score the eighth and most significant century of his Test career that propelled India to a fighting position with an overall lead of 171 runs after third day’s play in the fourth Test against England here on Saturday. Having displayed incredibly gorgeous defensive technique throughout the series with unflinching determination, the innings of 127 (256 balls) in India’s day-end score of 270 for 3 was the culmination of all the hardwork put in over the past two years. The 153-run second wicket stand with a confident Cheteshwar Pujara (61 off 127 balls) had put India in a position of command at 236 for 1 before Ollie Robinson (21-4-67-2) got quick breakthroughs with the second new ball saw to sent packing two set batsmen. While Rohit misjudged a slower delivery as he couldn’t keep his pull shot down, Robinson bowled an in-cutter that took the inside edge off Pujara’s bat into the pads and flew towards slip for an easy catch. At stumps, Indian captain Virat Kohli (22 batting) looked in Rohit Sharma, left, celebrates scoring 100 runs with Cheteshwar good nick in the company of RavinPujara, Saturday. (AP/PTI) dra Jadeja (9 batting), who was once
again promoted ahead of Ajinkya Rahane. The Test may not go the distance but what one can surely guarantee is an engrossing fourth day, thanks to Rohit’s superlative knock. Any target in excess of 225 and closer to 250 will be challenging on this track and especially with a batting line-up where Joe Root is the only consistent performer. One of the more elegant among modern day batsmen, Rohit during the series curbed all his ego to present a solid defence but brought his ‘Hit-Man’ instincts to the fore with a straight six off Moeen Ali that hit the second tier of the Oval stands en route his hundred. It took eight years and 43 Test matches to get an overseas hundred and that too in England in tough conditions, and there won’t be any second guess about where this knock of Rohit will rank among his eight tons. There was a lot of restraint at the start when KL Rahul (46) was attacking the bowlers but in between a straight drive at the onset and the first cover drive was brought out of the closet only at the end of second hour when James Anderson (23-8-49-1) over-pitched one. BRIEF SCORES: India 191 and 270/3 (Rohit Sharma 127, Cheteshwar Pujara 61, KL Rahul 46; Ollie Robinson 2/67, James Anderson 1/49). bringing up allegations against coach
NEW DELHI, SEP 4 (IANS): The Table Tennis Federation of India (TTFI) is bemused why star player Manika Batra remained silent for more than five months and then levelled serious charges against national coach Soumyadeep Roy that he tried to influence her to lose in an Olympic Qualification tournament in March this year, only after being served a show-cause notice in August for indiscipline. Manika had made history at the Tokyo Olympic Games by becoming the first TT player from the country to reach the third round at the Games before losing to Austria’s Sofia Polcanova. In a controversy that has been festering for some time now, Manika had refused national coach Roy’s help during her singles matches in Tokyo after her personal coach Sanmay Paranjape was not given FOP ‘field of play’ access due to limited accreditations handed out by the Tokyo Games Organisers. On her return from Tokyo, TTFI served Manika a show-cause notice for indiscipline and asked her
Manika Batra
to explain her refusal to allow Roy to sit courtside and help her during her matches. Manika in her response to TTFI’s showcause denied charges of indiscipline and instead alleged that national coach Roy had “pressurised me during the qualification tournament in Doha in March 2021 to concede my match to his student to enable her to qualify for the Olympics”. Speaking to IANS from Lucknow, TTFI secretary general Arun Banerjee said that when Manika’s personal coach Sanmay Paranjape was not accredited for ‘field of play’, there was no way
he could sit courtside and guide Manika. Banerjee said that national coach Roy has still been asked to respond to Manika’s allegations and he will send his reply by Monday. Banerjee said that the TTFI had always kept the interest of its players ahead of everything else and that is why when Manika came to him seeking permission to take her personal coach (Sanmay Paranjape) along to Tokyo, we immediately cleared it. Ditto for G Sathiyan. “If players feel they can perform better by taking their personal coaches along, why should we object,” added Banerjee.
