Total repeal of AFSPA may take time: CM
Staff Reporter/DIPR
DIMAPUR, APR 4 (NPN): Nagaland chief minister Neiphiu Rio on Monday said that the total abolition of Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act (AFSPA) may take time, but the partial abolishment was just a “test”. In his key note address at the consultative meeting on AFSPA with tribal hohos and civil society organizations held at Rhododendron Hall, Police complex Chümoukedima on Monday, Rio appealed to all stakeholders to seriously ponder how to maintain law and order in the state and sought their co-operation to ensure that no untoward incidents occur, a DIPR report stated. He acknowledged that the Centre had finally heard the plea of all stakeholders for the abolishment of the draconian law- AFSPA. As the Naga solution is for all the Nagas, Rio appealed that Nagas should harbor a sense of unity and oneness and not be selfish in their demands. On the December 4 Oting incident, Rio said that once the SIT report is submitted and a case is filed, the contents of the report will be made known to the public. The Centre also formed its SIT and they have also submitted their report, he added. He thanked the CSOs, tribal leaders, and student bodies for always cooperating and supporting the government. Representatives form over 20 organisations attended the consultative meeting. Interacting with media persons after the meeting, United Democratic Alliance (UDA) chairman TR Zeliang claimed that the meeting was held in a positive manner with free and frank discussion. For the Act to be completely repealed form the State, he said co-

operation of all sections of the society was important. He also clarified that if Nagaland, with around 20,000 policemen, could implement ceasefire ground rules and maintain law and order, the question of reimposing the Act did not arise. “If the government and

Director general of police (DGP) T John Longkumer, who also attended the meeting, said he briefed the meeting on the security aspect vis-à-vis withdrawal of AFSPA from certain areas. He said the committee formed to review repeal of AFSPA from Nagaland had in its report suggested withdrawal of the Act from the State except in border areas. He revealed that partial removal of the Act was a pilot experiment, assuring that if everything went well, it could be lifted from more areas in the second phase. He however clarified that removal of AFSPA would depend on the situation in the State. The DGP said the committee took into consideration certain parameters and criteria, which could not be ignored. He explained that based on statistics like rate

also in place. Except for the Indo-Myanmar border areas, Longkumer said he was optimistic that the police force would be able to tackle law and order situation throughout the State. “With a little bit of more support and strengthening of the police force, we should be able to handle the situation,” he added. He however agreed with the Central government’s stand that revocation of the Act should be done in a cautious and phased manner so that there were no hiccups along the way. Terming the consultative meeting with CSOs, tribal hohos and student bodies as a great initiative, he said it had led to a joined response towards maintaining peace in the State and not to give any reason for reimposing the Act. Senior NPF legislator Imkong L Imchen said the meeting took note of the ongoing Naga peace pro-
cess and discussed how to expedite it to usher in a final solution. Asked about the State government’s views on the partial lifting of AFSPA, he mentioned that the government had welcomed this, but the tribal hohos expressed their resentment on the ground that the partial lifting had no meaning and called for its total withdrawal from the State. Mentioning that he too was in favour of total lifting of the Act, Imchen added that the State government had a role to maintain law and order, for which support and cooperation was required from the CSOs. He expressed the confidence that Nagaland Police would be able to handle the law and order situation. Naga Students’ Federation president Kekwayhun Tep said he was dismayed at the partial lifting of AFSPA. Acknowledging the efforts and seriousness of the State government vis-à-vis removal of the Act, he noted that it had been imposed in Nagaland for many years and appealed to all Nagas in general and the State government to join hands to ensure that it was removed completely. On his par t, Naga Hoho president HK Zhimomi termed the meeting as very fruitful since all those present were in favour of total removal of AFSPA from the peaceful Naga-inhabited areas. NMA objects to selective, continued militarisation DIMAPUR, APR 4 (NPN): Naga Mothers’ Association (NMA) has demanded that the Centre should move Parliament for repeal of Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) as Nagaland Assembly had already passed a resolution in this regard. In a memorandum to governor Prof Jadgish Mukhi, association’s president Abeiu Meru and secretary Lochumbeni Humtsoe strongly objected to the selective and continued militarisation of Naga people through such extension of AFSPA by citing peaceful areas as disturbed. This was an insult to the many years of peace making and peace keeping by Naga mothers and other women organisations, they added. NMA claimed that as ceasefires had brought peace, any peace accord signed under the shadow of the Act would be under duress and would not sustain true peace in the years ahead. (Full text on p-6)

Staff of the Veterinary Hospital during the anti-rabies vaccination camp on Monday. (NP)
Correspondent KOHIMA, MAR 4 (NPN): Veterinary Hospital, Kohima conducted a free antirabies vaccination camp at the hospital premises, here on Monday. Interacting with the media, veterinary surgeon, Dr. Elizabeth Yhome said anti rabies vaccination was conducted every year where dogs were administered the vaccine to keep them safe from infectious viral disease which was incurable. She informed that usually the vaccination for a dog begins at three months of age followed by yearly vaccination. However, if a mother dog is not vaccinated then the pup should get vaccinated at two months of age followed by a booster dose in a month after which the yearly cycle can begin,
Dr. Elizabeth informed. She said rabies was caused by rhabdovirus in dogs which could be transmitted to human beings and therefore in order to avoid such occurrences, she urged upon the people to come forward and vaccinate their dogs to keep the disease at bay. Dr. Elizabeth said symptoms of a dog infected by rabies included hiding from owners, refusing to take food, running around aimlessly, trying to bite any object and getting furious. She however clarified that all dog bite cases could not be categorised as rabies case since a dog with poor upbringing might develop psychological problems where it tends to bite other dogs and humans without any reason. The veterinary surgeon

Boundary pact: UDP wants govt to revisit certain areas
S H I L LO N G, A P R 3 (AGENCIES): The United Democratic Party (UDP) on Sunday asked the state government to revisit those areas where the recent border agreement caused anger among the residents. “I am not saying we are happy. We are happy with most things that have happened but we are not happy with certain things that have also happened,” UDP general secretary, Jemino Mawthoh said reacting to the pact signed between Meghalaya and Assam, The Shillong Times reported. “We strongly feel that there are certain areas which need to be revisited. As the border talks is a process, we hope it will continue,” he added. The sentiments of the people living in the border areas should be respected as it is an important parameter. That is the reason why the UDP had emphasized that there is a need to revisit those areas where there is disgruntlement, Mawthoh said. “We have strongly expressed our views and we hope the government also understands this. Before moving to other areas of differences, all these things need to be sorted out in a proper manner,” the UDP general secretary said.
He said if people’s resentment can be addressed appropriately, it will pave the way for peaceful resolution of the dispute in the remaining six areas. Mawthoh said revisiting the decision should not be a problem. “You cannot say that once a decision is taken, it is the end to it because this is a long-drawn process. All areas where there is resentment need to be revisited. The government has done this exercise in the fitness of things and it should consider the sentiments expressed by the people,” he added. M e a n w h i l e, K h a s i Hills Autonomous District Council Chief Executive Member, Titosstarwell Chyne said the council will need to deliberate whether it should be a party if the Himas decide on moving the Supreme Court on the border agreement. “We are yet to receive any official communication from the Himas and the landowners on what they want from us. But we will need to discuss if we should be a part of the decision of the Himas to move the apex court,” Chyne said. He said it is very important to have the evidence and documents to justify Meghalaya’s claim before approaching the Supreme Court.

The hike in the prices of fuels has led to the increase in the prices of essential commodities. Kakching district Congress leader Ksh Kennedy alleged that since the BJP came to power at the Centre prices of fuels went on increasing. During the protest, they demanded the immediate roll back to the prices of all the petroleum products - petrol, diesel, LPG, piped natural gas (PNG) and compressed natural gas (CNG).

posed a fine of Rs 60 lakh, Rs 30 lakh each under IPC sections and corruption Act. The case is related to the fraudulent withdrawal of Rs 3.13 crore from the Dumka treasury in the early 1990s. Prasad had acquired bail in three other cases of the fodder scam-Deogarh, Chaibasa, and Ranchi’s Doranda treasury cases- and was waiting for judgement in the Dumka case. The Rs 950 crore fodder scam took place in the Animal Husbandry department in undivided Bihar when Prasad was the chief minister. Prasad is in Ranchi jail after his sentence in Rs 89 lakh Deogarh treasury case on December 23, 2017.
After 3 NE states, speculation rife over possible withdrawal of AFSPA from J&K
NEW DELHI, APR 4 (AGENCIES): Speculation is rife over the possibility of lifting of AFSPA from some parts of Jammu and Kashmir after the controversial law was partially removed from three North Eastern states- Nagaland, Assam and Arunachal Pradesh. Under the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act, 1958 (AFSPA) a geographical location is declared as disturbed area to facilitate operations of the armed forces. “A highly sensitive decision like withdrawal of the AFSPA from some parts of Jammu and Kashmir can be taken only at the highest
political level of the government on the basis of a thorough assessment of the ground situation,” a senior government official said when asked about the matter. There has been speculation that to send a positive political message, the government, if it takes any decision, may first make an analysis of the security situation of Jammu city only. “Any consideration on tweaking the AFSPA in the Kashmir valley is very unlikely,” the official said. Citing Manipur, another official said, barring four police station areas, all the localities from where the AFSPA
Kwatra named India’s next Foreign Secretary
NEW DELHI, APR 4 (IANS): The Centre has appointed Indian Foreign Service (IFS) officer Vinay Mohan Kwatra the next Foreign Secretary, and he will take over from incumbent Harsh Vardhan Shringla, who retires from service on April 30. The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has approved the appointment of Kwatra to the post. Kwatra, with an experience of nearly 32 years in a range of assignments, is currently serving as the Indian Ambassador in Nepal since March 2020. He has worked in Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s office from 2015 to 2017 as Joint Secretary, and subsequently, went to
France as India’s Ambassador. The 1988 batch IFS officer has served as the Third Secretary and then the Second Secretary in the Permanent Mission of India in Geneva until 1993. Between 1993 and 2003, he served as a desk officer at the headquarters dealing with the United Nations. Thereafter he was deployed at Indian missions in South Africa and Uzbekistan. From 2003 to 2006, he served as the Counsellor and later as the Deputy Chief of Mission in the Beijing embassy. Then he represented India at the SAARC Secretariat in Nepal as head of the Trade, Economy and Finance Bureau.

The AFSPA empowers security forces to conduct operations and arrest anyone without any prior warrant besides giving immunity from arrest and prosecution to the security forces if they shoot someone dead. In a major outreach to the Northeast, Union Home Minister Amit Shah on March 31 had announced reduction of the disturbed areas under the contentious AFSPA in Assam, Nagaland and Manipur from April 1, after decades.
S R I NAG A R , A P R 4 (PTI): One CRPF personnel was killed and another injured in a militant attack in the Maisuma area here on Monday, officials said. They said terrorists opened fire on CRPF personnel at Maisuma, resulting in injuries to two jawans. The injured personnel were rushed to SMHS Hospital, the officials said, adding one of them was declared dead on arrival while the other was undergoing treatment. The area has been cordoned off and a search operation has been launched to track down the assailants, they said. Earlier in the day, two non-local labourers, hailing from Bihar, were injured in an attack by militants in Pulwama district.
HYDERABAD, APR 4 (PTI): With WHO announcing the suspension of Covaxin supply through UN procurement agencies, Bharat Biotech sources said on Monday the pharma company has not supplied the COVID-19 vaccine to any UN agency and no impact of the suspension would be felt. So far, sources said, the firm has supplied vaccines to the Indian government and nine countries under the Centre’s Vaccine Maitri programme, and has made direct commercial supply under emergency use authorisation. Covaxin has received emergency use approvals from over 25 countries “We have not received any orders from any UN agency so far,” a source said. Gavi Covax, the international vaccine alliance, has also not placed any orders for Covaxin. Citing good manufacturing practices (GMP) deficiencies, the World Health Organization (WHO) on April 2 confirmed the suspension of supply of Covaxin through UN procurement
agencies and recommended countries that received the vaccine to take actions as appropriate. In a statement, WHO had said this suspension is in response to the outcome of WHO post Emergency Use Listing (EUL) inspection and the need to conduct process and facility upgrade to address recently identified GMP deficiencies. On facility upgrade, company sources said on Monday that none of the facilities where Covaxin is being made were designed specifically for manufacturing Covaxin. These are repurposed facilities which were already existing for manufacturing other vaccines. “We will be upgrading the existing facilities and make them 100 per cent specific for Covaxin,” the
source said. “Our vaccine certificates remain valid and there will be no interruption in supplies in India,” the source said. WHO officials carried an inspection of the BB facility during March 14-22. It was not a surprise visit, the sources said, adding there was no inspection before the EUL was granted and the WHO audit was only for Covaxin. The source said once all facility upgrades are done “we will apply to WHO for full licensure for Covaxin” in due course of time. In response to a question on the nasal vaccine, the company source said the phase-3 trial is going on and in four months it will have the data as this is a very complex trial.
Cong MLAs seek change of guard in Odisha unit BHUBANESWAR, APR 4 (PTI): Rattled by the party’s poor performance in the recently held panchayat and urban polls, a section of Odisha Congress MLAs are seeking a change of guard in the state unit. Of the nine Congress MLAs in the state, four of them -- Taraprasad Bahinipati, S S Saluja, Adhiraj Panigrahi and Mohammed Moqium -- have expressed concern over the party’s present situation and future prospects, further demanding a reshuffle in the party. “The party must survive. An alternative leadership should be installed to strengthen the party’s Odisha unit,” Panigrahi, a lawmaker from Khariar, said. Bahinipati, a Jeypore legislator, and Jatni MLA Suresh Routray, known for their loyalty to Odisha Pradesh Congress Committee (OPCC) chief Niranjan Patnaik, also insisted on a change in leadership. “Niranjan Babu falls
ill whenever there is an election. Therefore a new and strong leadership should be installed in Odisha,” Bahinipati maintained. Routray, while supporting the idea, said that the party leadership should back candidates with resources during elections in order to counter its rivals. “The OPCC president should provide necessary logistics to the candidates fighting against the mighty BJD and BJP,” Routray said. Kantabanji MLA Santosh Singh Saluja claimed that party candidates who
won the rural and urban polls did so through their “personal efforts”. The Congress which ruled Odisha for decades before Naveen Patnaik’s BJD took over the reins of the state in 2000 was pushed to third spot in state politics after the 2019 elections. The BJP replaced Congress as the state’s main opposition party. In the just-concluded urban polls, the Congress secured only 12 per cent of the votes and won only seven chairperson seats as against 13 seats in 2013-14 polls. The BJP, on the other hand,
bagged 16 chairperson seats. The ruling Biju Janata Dal clinched 73 such seats along with three mayoral posts in municipal corporations of Bhubaneswar, Cuttack and Berhampur. What came as a shock for the OPCC is that its candidates failed to open account in the Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation, with its mayoral candidate losing the deposit. Only one party candidate won in the 42-member Berhampur Municipal Corporation. In the Cuttack Municipal Corporation, the party pocketed eight of the 59 seats. Of the total 1,716 councillor posts across the state, the party bagged 134, according to the State Election Commission (SEC). In three-tier panchayat elections held in February, Congress candidates secured only 37 of the total 852 Zilla Parishad seats. The BJD, on the other hand, won 766 and BJP 42 seats.

Opposition members, including those from the Congress, TMC and Shiv Sena, on Monday walked out of the Lok Sabha protesting against fuel price hike. As soon as the Zero Hour began, DMK members trooped into the Well shouting slogans. Later, members from other opposition parties too stormed the Well raising the issue of fuel price rise. As Rajendra Agrawal, who was in the chair continued to run the Zero Hour, Congress, DMK, TMC, Left parties, Shiv Sena and NCP staged a walk out. Opposition members have been demanding a discussion on rising prices of petrol, diesel and LPG for a few days and have been giving adjournment notices in both houses. Petrol prices were hiked for the 12th time in the last 14 days as global crude oil prices rose. In all, petrol prices have gone up by Rs 8.40 per litre in the past two weeks.

Opposition members also staged a walkout in the Lok Sabha with several of them raising the issue during Zero Hour. In the Upper House of Parliament, Chairman M Venkaiah Naidu did not allow adjournment notices moved by opposition members on the issue of price rise, prompting members of the Congress, TMC, left parties, DMK, AAP, NCP, RJD and Shiv Sena to create an uproar. The Rajya Sabha was adjourned twice during the pre-lunch period and was adjourned soon after it met after lunch. Soon after the laying of papers, Naidu said he had received notices from several members under Rule 267 to discuss issues of price rise, including prices of petrol, diesel, and LPG, and said the issue has already been discussed during the debate on the Finance Bill and the Appropriation

India’s neighbours in crisis
I
ndia’s two important neighbours- Sri Lanka and Pakistan- are in turmoil and that should be a cause of concern for New Delhi since the eventual developments could affect the security scenario in South Asia. India’s southernmost neighbour, Sri Lanka is under the grip of severe economic crisis where it has too little foreign exchange reserves to buy much needed oil. On the other hand, India’s north-western neighbour, Pakistan faces a serious constitutional crisis arising out of the controversial decisions of its cricketer-turned politician prime minister Imran Khan. In Sri Lanka, the problem arose due to the over reach of a dynasty dominating the political scenario. Following the unexpected defeat of Mahinda Rajapaksa in the 2015 Presidential Election, the new government under Ranil Wickremsinghe, leader of the UNP had strategies for settling the high-interest loans, and they did manage to convert the short-term loans into cheaper, long-term debts and build up foreign reserves up to USD 7.5 billion. As a result, the Wickramasinge government achieved a budget surplus for the first time in 52 years. Gotabaya Rajaapaksa , agan won office in the November 2019 presidential elections and appointed his brother, Mahinda, as prime minister. The return of Sri Lanka’s dynasty- the Rajapakshas- appears to have brought the nation to near ruination. The island nation of 22 million people is facing its worst economic upheaval in a decade. In just over two years, Sri Lanka’s first family-the Rajapaksas- has presided over a series of crises mostly of its own making. If this pairing sounds familiar, it’s because it is. This is one of the most influential dynasty in Sri Lanka. Under the Rajapaksa brothers, Sri Lanka was heading towards autocracy . Sri Lanka’s current economic crisis is rooted in its long dalliance with IMF-imposed conditionalities and has been aggravated by the Rajapaksa government’s quixotic organic farming adventure. Without a course correction, more misery is in store for the country. From an ill-fated fertilizer ban that led to a dramatic fall in yields of crops like rice and tea, to its failure to deal with a foreign-currency crisis that’s now a humanitarian emergency, the government of President Gotabaya Rajapaksa is fast running out of solutions. Sri Lanka is witnessing its darkest days politically and economically as the President declared a public emergency across the country, following the public unrest against the leadership midst of the economic crisis that has crippled the Island. Several thousand people are on the streets in Sri Lanka with food getting scarcer and expensive and power cuts lasting over 12 hours everyday. India cannot be do something to help mainly because if it does not then the Chinese are ever willing to come calling. That will mean practically handing over the entire island to the Chinese who otherwise, have taken over strategic sea port and other installations. In Pakistan, the flamboyant cricketer-turned-politician Imran Khan has just plunged his country in a serious constitutional crisis. He had lost majority when 197 out of 342 members got together to vote him out. However on April 3, Imran’s deputy speaker rejected the motion and later had the president dissolve parliament and call for fresh election. The opposition have gone to court and the ruling will have profound effect as any change would be crucial for Indo-Pak relations. The developments in Sri Lanka and Pakistan are very crucial for India as the involve its regional security.
DailyDevotion The Way to Permanent Faith Indeed the hour is coming…that you will be scattered… —John 16:32
Jesus was not rebuking the disciples in this passage. Their faith was real, but it was disordered and unfocused, and was not at work in the important realities of life. The disciples were scattered to their own concerns and they had interests apart from Jesus Christ. After we have the perfect relationship with God, through the sanctifying work of the Holy Spirit, our faith must be exercised in the realities of everyday life. We will be scattered, not into service but into the emptiness of our lives where we will see ruin and barrenness, to know what internal death to God’s blessings means. Are we prepared for this? It is certainly not of our own choosing, but God engineers our circumstances to take us there. Until we have been through that experience, our faith is sustained only by feelings and by blessings. But once we get there, no matter where God may place us or what inner emptiness we experience, we can praise God that all is well. That is what is meant by faith being exercised in the realities of life. “…you…will leave Me alone.” Have we been scattered and have we left Jesus alone by not seeing His providential care for us? Do we not see God at work in our circumstances? Dark times are allowed and come to us through the sovereignty of God. Are we prepared to let God do what He wants with us? Are we prepared to be separated from the outward, evident blessings of God? Until Jesus Christ is truly our Lord, we each have goals of our own which we serve. Our faith is real, but it is not yet permanent. And God is never in a hurry. If we are willing to wait, we will see God pointing out that we have been interested only in His blessings, instead of in God Himself. The sense of God’s blessings is fundamental. “…be of good cheer, I have overcome the world” (John 16:33). Unyielding spiritual fortitude is what we need.

NAGALAND POST, DIMAPUR TUESDAY, APRIL 5, 2022
Post-mortem
Speech of Th. Muivah at UNPO general assembly I on behalf of the people of Nagalim (Nagaland), greet you all the honorable members gathered here in this general assembly in the gracious name of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. I would like to say a big thank you to the President and the General Secretary of UNPO for giving me an opportunity to speak on the latest position of the IndoNaga political talks in this august House. To begin with, I would like to highlight a brief historical account of the Naga resistance movement that culminated in the Framework Agreement of 2015. The case of the Nagas is an invasion of Nagalim by India and Myanmar. The Nagas have been living in their own free country till the British imperialist forces occupied a part of it in 1832 while the rest called free Naga area remains as free as ever. On the eve of departure
of the British, the Nagas of the British occupied Naga territory declared their independence on 14th August, 1947 and joined with their brothers in free Naga area. In 1950, the Indian Constituent Assembly invited the Nagas to join the Union of India, but it was rejected by the Naga people. The Nagas have neither been a part of the Union of India nor that of the Burma either by consent or by conquest. Suppressing the right of the Nagas the Indian state invaded Nagalim in 1954 which subsequently gave birth to heavy confrontations between the Indian armed forces and the Naga people where the invading forces committed horrible crimes of human rights violations. With a view to legalizing its military occupation of Nagalim, the government of India imposed its will upon the Nagas in the form attic so-called 16-point agreement in 1960. However, it was rejected outright by the
Naga people. Acknowledging that the Indo-Naga case is political, a cease-fire agreement was reached between the government of India and the then Federal Government of Nagaland on 6 September, 1964 for political talks through the good offices of the Peace Mission. Nevertheless, the talks ended in a dead-lock on account of the colonial design of the government of India resulting in resumption of armed confrontations between the two forces. In its unceasing attempts to subjugate the Nagas, the government of India dictated another agreement called “The Shillong Accord” on 11 November, 1975, a kind of settlement within the parameter of Indian constitution. It was however, rejected and condemned by the Naga national Assembly. The organization, the government and the leadership that supported the Accord betraying the principle fell from the stage of history.
The Nagas views any kind of agreement that betrays the Naga national principle/ issue is no solution. They are for an issue-based solution. Realizing that seeking for a military solution to the political problem is a futile exercise, the government of India (Gol) invited the NSCN leadership for political talks. Thus, a ceasefire agreement between Gol and NSCN was signed and declared on 1 August, 1997. After 22 years long intensive negotiations with the Gol involving six Prime Ministers of India, the historic Framework Agreement was signed between the Gol and the NSCN on 3 August, 2015 in the presence of the Prime Minister of India and his colleagues and host of NSCN leaders. Acknowledging the historical fact, the government of India recognized the unique history and situation of the Nagas. By unique history it means - Nagas have the history of independence.
By unique situation it means - situation in Nagalim is an aggression on Nagalim, not law and order situation of India. Basing on the universal principle of democracy the two parties reiterate that ‘sovereignty lies with the people.’ It means - sovereignty of the Nagas lies with the Naga people and vice-versa. Nevertheless, it is further stated that Nagas and Indians will coexist as two entities sharing sovereign power which will be defined in the competencies. By coexistence of the two entities, it means - Nagas will not merge with the Union of India, but they will coexist with India maintaining their national entity. In the competencies Gol recognizes the territories of the Nagas stating that land and all the natural and mineral resources on the surface and beneath of it belong to the Nagas. The Gol also recognizes the legitimate right of the
Nagas to territorial integration of all Naga areas under one political roof. Since the unique history of the Nagas and the sovereign right of the Nagas are recognized, it is understood that the Naga flag and constitution are ingredients of their sovereignty. In spite of all these facts, commitments and agreements, the government of India has started misinterpreting what have been mutually agreed upon and going back on its word. In the event of breaking down of the current negotiations we foresee serious human rights violations again in Nagalim. Therefore, I on behalf of the Naga people appeal to this competent house to look into the fragile situation of the Indo-Naga political talks and take a positive role from your end so that the current peace process is brought to a logical conclusion. Th. Muivah, General Secretary and Chief negotiator, NSCN
NMA memorandum to Nagaland Gov Repeal AFSPA from entire Naga homeland: GNF
T
he Naga Mothers Association (NMA) seek your kind and immediate intervention on the following: 1. That the fervent appeal made by the Naga Mothers Association and other Naga tribe women organisations in our meeting at your Esteemed Office on the 7th of December 2021, post the Oting massacre was the strong demand for the Repeal of the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA). The NMA places on record our deep disappointment and anguish that the AFSPA has not been repealed till date, and with the latest GOI notification, states the continuation of the AFSPA in nine Districts of the state and select towns within other districts. The NMA strongly objects to the selective and continued militarisation on our Naga people through such extension of the AFSPA, citing peaceful areas as disturbed areas. This is an insult to the many years of peace making and peace keeping by the Naga Mothers and other women organisations. 2. Despite the tragedy of the Oting massacre, it is evident that the Indian armed forces are unrepentent and intent on hunting innocent Naga civilians in our Naga areas. The NMA condemns the killing and injury of Naga civilians at Kalegaon in Arunachal Pradesh in March 2022 by para commandos and the shooting of innocent Naga, daily wagers once again in Chasa, Arunachal Pradesh in April 2022 by the 12 Para Commandos. We are in solidarity with the grief and anger of our brethren in Naga areas of Arunachal Pradesh and demand swift punitive action in civil court on the perpetrators, as per the law. 3. We reiterate that apologies of ‘mistaken identity’ in all these cases are unacceptable and not tenable. For decades, since 1958, the Naga population has been decimated through this
I
draconian law, which is against every form of human rights. As mothers, for generations, Naga women and girls have borne the brunt of humiliating rapes and sexual crimes at the hands of Indian armed forces, seen our children and youth shot dead, village leaders beheaded as in Matikhru village. Naga people are yet to see justice against perpetrators - the Indian armed forces in the Oinam Operation Bluebird in Naga hills of Manipur, the Matikhru Massacre, Kohima bomb blasts, Tseminyu killings, Mokokchung arson, rape and killings, Pangsha killings at ITC Dan border, Wuzu killing of children, Oting massacre, Kalegaon and Chasa and countless others, perpetrated upon civilian Nagas by Security forces who vent their anger against us in our own lands. We demand that the GOI proves its respect for Naga women and our people by ensuring that Uniformed Indian army perpetrators be convicted in civil courts for all these enumerated incidents, as per the law. No amount of money will ever compensate the grief, trauma and suffering of the Nagas under the AFSPA for all these years. We demand that the GOI moves for Repeal of the AFSPA in the Parliament, as the Nagaland Legislative Assembly has passed the resolution for the same. The Ceasefires have brought much peace and therefore any Peace Accord signed under the shadow of the Armed Forces Special Powers Act, will be under duress and cannot sustain true peace in the years ahead. Therefore, we demand the repeal of AFSPA from all Naga areas, in consonance to women’s right to peace and security. We are confident that your Esteemed Office will convey the stand of Naga mothers to the Government of India. Abeiu Meru, President, NMA Lochumbeni Humtsoe, Secretary, NMA
F
or the government of India and the Indian Army, the Northeast has become a theatre of war to practice on live human beings. A full military campaign against the Nagas started in 1954. It did not accomplish the intended goal, so the central government went to parliament and had the extrajudicial Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) passed in 1958, which has enabled the Indian government and the Army to use the region for two kinds of exercises: false policy propaganda for the government and military training camp for the Army. The AFSPA was renewed four days ago, 1st April 2022, in the Naga area of Tirap, Changlang, and Longding District in Arunachal Pradesh. On this very day, the 12 Para Special Commando Force, under the command of Major James, wilfully shot two Chasa Villagers who were coming back to their village after a day of fishing. As the four youths were climbing up the hill towards their village, the 12 Para Special Commando unit shot at them from the back injuring two of them. This was not just a reckless act; it was an attempt to murder. The injured youths, Ramwang Wangsu, s/o late Wanglee and Nokphua Wangpan, s/o Tekai Wangpan, have been admitted by the DC Tirap and 6th AR Commandant at Assam Medical College, Dibrugarh, Assam. A week before, on 21st March 2022, the 6th Assam Rifles went to Kolagoan village and Retto Kakho
in Arunachal Pradesh, and shot and killed a former Panchayat leader in front of his villagers and family members. Three months before that, on 4th and 5th December 2021, fourteen innocent civilians were murdered in Oting and Mon in Nagaland. No armed personnel have been criminally prosecuted for these or any of the thousands of Naga civilians murdered by the Indian army since the Disturbed Areas Act and AFSPA have been in force. These are the facts and reality of the Naga people in our own homeland that the Government of India, the Army, the Parliament, and their political collaborators in the states have created and caused us to face from the mid-1950s to today. The Indian government has, however, made the Army’s presence in the Northeast look like a noble cause. Its political propaganda has been so consistent the Indian public seems to have been convinced by it. For example, the Indian government’s Doctrine for Sub Conventional Operations 2006 states: “Remember that the people you are dealing with are your own countrymen; your behaviour must be dictated by this single most consideration. The violation of Human Rights, therefore, must be avoided under all circumstances even at the cost of operational success. The operations must be people-friendly, and it must be ensured that minimum force is used and there are no collateral damages.” This kind of policy propagandizing is not recent.
It goes back to the start of the military campaign against the Naga people’s movement for self-determination. The Indian Chief of Army Staff Order in 1955 reads: “You are not there to fight the people in the area, but to protect them. You are fighting only those who threaten the people and who are a danger to the lives and properties of the people.” And yet the Indian army’s campaign since 1954 has been in violation of every ethical and international convention governing human rights and justice under the law. We are sick and tired of the combined and endless betrayal of the Indian government, parliament, and Army. The Global Naga Forum (GNF) condemns outright the repeated killings in Naga areas of Arunachal Pradesh and predictable fake encounters and “mistaken identities” that trash the basic human rights of the people of the Northeast. We appeal to the law enforcement agencies to book the culprits immediately and criminal prosecution be brought against every offender. Crucially, the AFSPA -- the Act that has legalized the oppression, murder, and dehumanization of the Nagas for 64 years -- must be immediately “Repealed” from the entire Naga homeland. It must be repealed for good by Parliament in the interest of India’s survival as a democracy and as a society governed by the rule of law. Media Cell, Global Naga Forum
Women in agriculture
t is that time of the year when the weather is windy accompanied with moderate drought and prolonged erratic rainfall which impact the food production in Nagaland once again. Kevino Angami has to work even harder than usual to water and fertilize her few acres of farmland in Kohima, north-east India. Kevino shared that she struggles to ensure her family has enough food to eat during the dry season, which begins in November. From November till March, she plants crops like pumpkin, brinjal, mustard, beans and varieties of peas. She also added that she supplements by working on farms in the hills surrounding the village, by going to Jhum fields or to collect wild fruits or herbs time to time. Women like Kevino play a major role in agriculture in Nagaland. There are a large number of women farmers working in the state, these women are also on the front line of climate change in the northeastern state, where erratic rainfall, floods and higher temperatures are making daily life more difficult for rural farmers. February-march months are the prime time when the farmers prepare for Jhum – a traditional practise also known as slash and burn technique used commonly in the hills of Nagaland. The women
are also seeing more random forest fires, set off by people who want to hunt wild animals. This causes huge damage to the land. Burning for Jhum preparation, however, does not damage soil fertility or cause environment degradation, argued the women. For Jhum, preparation a small forest area is cleared, and twigs, branches and waste from the clearings are dried and eventually burned. The ash actually helps the make the soil more fertile. Too little water, too much heat: The women dread the summer, when water will be really scarce. In the outskirts of the state capital, with over 1000 households where water seems to be abundant, has gradually dried and the women group share their growing concerns over it. Rainfall, the main source of water for domestic use, has become sporadic and this sometimes leads to drought not only in the outskirts but across the whole district. The women have also seen more frequent drought over the past decades, and drought is a major challenge while managing homes as well as farming wise. This is one reason why many there has been poor germination and work has not stayed consistent even during the winter months. Water for domestic use and for agriculture and irrigation is a key concern. The burden of collecting
water falls mainly on the women folks with the drying of springs and rivers in the villages. “Ten or twenty years back we no shortage of water throughout the year,” explained Keni, a vegetable vendor in the heart of Kohima. Therefore, women farmers like Keni and Kevino have to put even more effort into raising their crops, which is their main livelihood. Feeling the heat: Summer months are increasingly hot, said the women from nearby villages. February, once upon a time a cool, breezy month, was already warm and sultry this year. Though rural villages in the outskirts have to bear the summer heat without amenities, however, in the main town ceiling fans and standing fan have become a necessity. In peak temperature, Kohima has recorded over 30 degrees Celsius this year. “We have never imagined Kohima to be this humid and hot’’, Selabeinuo Solo shared, while some families in state capital have also fitted fans at home to cool themselves from the humidity and scorching sun. These changes have been distinct over the past few years, compared to the usually pleasant and moderate climatic conditions in Kohima. With the rise in temperatures has made it more difficult in the preservation seeds for farmers. Tra-
ditionally, seeds were preserved by drying them out in the sun or above fireplaces and keeping them in bamboo containers. In past generations seeds would be planted directly in the soil. Now seeds have to be germinated first with manure and water in nurseries at home before being planted in the soil, to ensure crops grow well. The hard work doesn’t end there: Once the crops grow, they come under attack from a growing number of insects and other pests. “These days we buy and use pesticides and fertilizers, our homemade manure are not sufficient,” said Keni. It’s not only agricultural crops. Papaya, one of the common fruit plants in Kohima, for instance, are vulnerable to infection, said Kevino stated. “Crops like beans, tomatoes and peas are impossible to grow now without insecticides, sometimes we also use ash of the firewood twice a day instead of medication for the crops,” she said. Wild herbs, plants and fruits that were once delicacies for the local communities have slowly disappeared. Forest fires affecting their water sources: For many years now several forest areas across Nagaland have been declared a “forest reserve” by the village authorities in preservation to its resources.
The farmers carryout jhum cultivation, but this practise turns out to be harmful leading to forest fires, bringing huge loss to fauna and flora vegetation over the tears and eventually affects the natural water sources, which are also slowly shrinking and on the brink of drying up. The forest Survey of India (FSI) highlighted that approximately two third of the state’s entire forest area falls under extremely high or highly fire prone category, indicating that vulnerability in this area. The struggle is real: Farming has become a real struggle for the farmers in the state, particularly women. Though they want to take every advantage of the recent developments in modern agricultural and the techniques provided from by state to boost their productivity and experiment a new ways of farming, however, they’ve shared that the hilly terrain comes with a challenge for them. Needless to say, they also hope to find alternative ways to earn income, for instance, introduction of new varieties of climate resistant seeds, or crops, such as pulses. They are the ones who are preserving natural resources, but unfortunately policymakers do not consider their knowledge and skills. Virosanuo Solo, PHD scholar, Nagaland University, SASRD

KARWAR (K’TAKA), APR 4 (PTI): Amid opposition by some right wing groups to the use loudspeakers at mosques, senior Karnataka Minister K S Eshwarappa on Monday said, any solution to the issue can be found by taking the Muslim community into confidence, keeping the interests of students and patients in mind. Maharashtra Navnirman Sena chief Raj Thackeray last week demanded that loudspeakers of mosques be shut down. “If this is not stopped, there will be speakers outside mosques playing Hanuman Chalisa at higher volume,” he had said in Mumbai. Stating that it is not a competition to play Hanuman Chalisa on loudspeakers to counter its use at mosques, and that it may lead to conflict between communities, Eshwarappa advised Muslim leaders to see to it that speakers are limited to their places of worship and don’t disturb

There have been complaints for a long time that it disturbs students and patients during morning and evening hours,” Eshwarappa said. Speaking to reporters, he said the Muslim community have for long been following the tradition of using loudspeakers to call for prayer, but it is disturb-
Differences over prohibition boil over as Chandigarh belongs to Punjab, says Sidhu Bharti asks why MP CM silent on issue SUNIL JAKHAR WARNS AGAINST ACRIMONY OVER ‘LOST CAUSE’
BHOPAL, APR 4 (PTI): Senior BJP leader Uma Bharti, who has been opposing the liquor policy of the Madhya Pradesh government, on Monday wondered why Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan has “stopped talking” now while she had always raised the issue of prohibition with him. In a series of tweets in Hindi, Bharti demanded that the practice of serving liquor in ‘ahatas’ (enclosed areas close to liquor vends) be immediately stopped and booze shops near schools, hospitals, temples and other prohibited places shut down. She also demanded that home delivery of liquor be not allowed. Calling Chouhan her elder brother, Bharti said that the former was now speaking through the media on the liquor issue. “I enjoy cordial and respectful relations with the MP chief minister and my elder brother Shivraj Singh Chouhan since 1984. He used to meet me while going

to the office or whenever I went for my Himalaya sojourn,” Bharti tweeted. The former Union minister said she always raised the demand for banning liquor in MP during her every meeting with Chouhan. “Now as the things are starting to come out why Shivraj has stopped talking. ‘Unbola kyun kar diya’? (Why is he not talking) and why has he started speaking through the media on this issue?” she asked in another tweet. Referring to Chouhan’s recent statement that if people stop consuming liquor, he will immediately close these shops, Bharti
said “When people won’t drink liquor then how these shops will run? (Obviously), they will automatically get closed”. She said the police and administration are dutybound to stop the sale of illegal liquor. “It is a matter of law and order”. Bharti suggested a string of measures to discourage people from drinking. Bharti demanded serving of liquor in ‘ahatas’ should be stopped immediately while liquor shops situated near schools, hospitals, temples and other prohibited places should be closed and the system of home delivery of liquor suspended. “After taking these m e a s u r e s, a n aw a r e ness campaign should be launched wherein all religious leaders, social organisations, leaders like me and Shivraj, and leaders from other parties should be included,” she said in another tweet.
CHANDIGARH, APR 4 (PTI): Ahead of a special session of the Haryana assembly, Congress leader Navjot Singh Sidhu on Monday asserted that Chandigarh always belonged to Punjab while his party colleague Sunil Jakhar said the “lost cause” will only create acrimony between the two states. The Haryana government has summoned a special session of the assembly here on Tuesday, days after the Punjab assembly passed a resolution seeking immediate transfer of Chandigarh to the AAP-ruled state. Haryana leaders have been demanding the completion of the Sutlej-Yamuna Link canal for getting the state’s river water share from Punjab. They have also sought the transfer of 400 Hindi-speaking villages to Haryana. Asserting that Chandigarh belongs to Punjab and will always remain so, former Punjab Congress chief
Sunil Jakhar and Navjot Singh Sidhu. (File)
Sidhu also predicted that its next big battle with Haryana will be over river waters. Referring to the Haryana assembly’s special session, Sidhu’s predecessor Sunil Jakhar, in a separate tweet, said the brotherhood between the people of Punjab and Haryana will be the “first casualty” of the “rising tempers” over the “lost cause” of Chandigarh. The Union Territory of Chandigarh is the common capital of Punjab and Haryana. Earlier in a tweet in Hindu, Sidhu said that built on 27 villages of Punjab,
Chandigarh belonged to Punjab and will remain so. “Kahin pe nigahein, kahin pe nishana,” Sidhu tweeted, suggesting that the real target for Haryana was not Chandigarh, but the river waters. “Chandigarh is just an excuse, the target is Punjab’s river waters. Beware the next big battle is for the river waters of Punjab,” he said. Sidhu, who lost during the recent Punjab assembly elections from Amritsar East, also tagged AAP national convener Arvind Kejriwal, state Chief Min-
ister Bhagwant Mann and Haryana CM Manohar Lal Khattar with his tweet. The SYL canal issue has been a bone of contention between Punjab and Haryana for several decades. In the past, Punjab had been demanding a reassessment of its share of the Ravi-Beas river waters while Haryana had been seeking completion of the SYL canal to get its share of 3.5 million acre-feet (MAF) of water. The Punjab government’s move to bring a resolution in the state assembly came in the wake of the Centre’s announcement that the Central Service Rules will apply to the employees of the Union Territory of Chandigarh. Dubbing Chandigarh as a “lost cause”, Jakhar in a tweet apprehended that the brotherhood between the people of two neighbouring state will be the “first casualty” of the “rising tempers” over it.

NEW DELHI, APR 4 (PTI): TMC floor leader in the Rajya Sabha Derek O’Brien said on Monday that he has given notice to move a motion for the introduction of the Women’s Reservation Bill in the upper house. Maintaining that among all major political parties the Trianmool Congress (TMC) has the maximum percentage of women MPs, he said the notice has been given for motion under Rule 168 to introduce the bill. “Open dare to 56 inch @PMOindia government. Introduce the long pending Women Reservation Bill in Rajya Sabha this week before April 8. And accept and put to vote @ AITCofficial motion under Rule 168,” the TMC leader tweeted. The bill seeks to reserve one-third seats in the Lok Sabha and state assemblies for women. Rule 168 allows members to raise issues of public interest. Sharing percentagewise details of women MPs of all major parties, he said the TMC has maximum 37 per cent of women MPs, while the BJP has only 13 per cent. The Women’s Reservation Bill was first introduced in 1996 by the United Front government led by Deve Gowda in the Lok Sabha. Therafter the bill was introduced three times in 1988, 1999, and 2008. In 2008, it was introduced in the Rajya Sabha and after scrutiny by the standing committee, it was passed by the Upper House in 2010 and sent to the Lok Sabha. However, the Bill lapsed with the end of the 15th Lok Sabha in 2014.

NEW DELHI, APR 4 (PTI): Allaying concerns about any increase in prices of medicines, Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya on Monday said the government has not effected any hike and only a few essential drugs that are linked to the wholesale price index and are as such priced very low may see some automatic rise or fall as per inflation trends. “There are some essential medicines linked to WPI that can see rise or fall automatically as per the WPI movement. These are drugs that are priced a few rupees and therefore, a 10 per cent WPI increase may lead to the price rising by a few paise,” Mandaviya said. The government has no role in the price of these medicines and it has not effected any increase in prices and it has no plans to do so, he said. The prices of these medicines also automatically decline when WPI falls, Mandaviya told reporters here.

Speaking on legal strategy to counter cyber crimes, Vaishnaw said the country needs to overhaul the legal structure in a big way. “I don’t think any incremental changes will help. The change has to be substantial, significant, fundamental and structural,” he said. He said that is where the whole conflict is between the two constraints -- the first constraint of right to privacy and freedom of expression and second conflicting demand of having
during Covid the world has changed fundamentally and the way of thinking has changed that the balance is now coming in the thought process of societies. Citing cases of countries like South Korea, Australia, the US, the European Union, he said a large number of legal, societal interventions are today happening which are basically trying to bring back the balance between right to privacy on the one side and the need for regulation on the other. “We, in India, are also trying to create that societal consensus. Its happening. Recently in Parliament multiple number of times the opposition, which used to be very vocal about government trying to intrude into people’s lives, that used to be their basic fundamental accusation, is today asking that, no, we need more regulations,” he said.

NEW DELHI, APR 4 (PTI): Union Minister of Information Technology Ashwini Vaishnaw on Monday called for a new “dynamic” legal structure which balances the right to privacy and freedom of expression and demands for regulations and control to meet challenges from unscrupulous elements in the cyber space. Addressing the second national conference on cyber crime investigations and digital forensics organised by the CBI, the minister said over the years technology has given a lot of productivity, efficiency and convenience but simultaneously it has brought intrusions in the lives of people which can be benign but most of the time it is malignant and aimed to commit a fraudulent act. He said this problem can be tackled by legal strategy, technology, organisations, capacity building and mutual cooperation.

Merchandise export shipments hit record $40.4 bn
NEW DELHI, APR 4 (AGENCIES): Merchandise exports touched a record $40.38 billion in March, driving up the outbound shipment in FY22 to an all-time high of $417.8 billion, commerce and industry minister Piyush Goyal said on Sunday, while releasing the preliminary trade data. The full-year exports, thus, exceeded the previous record of $330 billion, achieved in FY19, by a wide margin and remained 43.2% higher than the $292 billion recorded in the pandemic year of FY21, Financial Express reported. A spurt in demand for goods in the wake of an industrial resurgence in advanced economies and elevated global commodity price rise have boosted India’s exports in FY22, after a Covid-induced slide in FY21. Exports in March registered a rise of 14.5% over the same month in 2021 (when outbound shipments

had staged a smart rebound) and 87.9% over March 2020 when the pandemic had started spreading its tentacles, forcing a pan-India lockdown in the last six days of that month. With this, goods exports exceeded the crucial $30-billion mark in each of the last 12 months. Meanwhile, imports, too, are expected to have crossed a record $600 billion. Analysts have already said that merchandise trade deficit may breach the earlier record of $190 billion by a whisker. However, the deficit, as a percentage of overall merchandise commerce, is still way below the earlier peak. Icra chief economist Aditi Nayar said, “Even though a portion of the upside may have been led by rising commodity prices, the performance has been laudable. We expect the current account deficit to recede under $20 billion in Q4 FY22 (from $23 billion in the previous quarter).”
While exporters have defied Covid blues in FY22 with a strong performance, strong external headwinds remain. Given the tangled global supply chains in the aftermath of the RussiaUkraine war and consequent surge in international shipping costs, Indian exporters will find it difficult to ship out products on time and honour supply commitments in the coming months. The US continued to remain the top export destination for India in FY22, while the UAE regained the second spot that it lost out to China in FY21. Bangladesh and Netherlands were two other key export destinations. Importantly, merchandise exports had remained below par in the past decade, having fluctuated between $250 billion and $330 billion a year since FY11; the highest export of $330 billion was achieved in FY19. So, a sustained
surge in exports for a few years will be crucial to India recapturing its lost market share, analysts have said. The official data showed petroleum products were the biggest driver of exports with a year-on-year surge of 151%. Huge rise was also reported in the exports of cotton yarn, fabrics, made-ups, etc (55%), gems & jewellery (50%), engineering goods (46%), electronics (41%), and organic & inorganic chemicals (32%). Farm exports, too, hit a record $50 billion in FY22. These are driven by elevated outbound shipments of rice ($9.6 billion), marine products ($8 billion), wheat ($ 2 billion), spices and sugar ($6 billion), among others. Goyal lauded the performance of the farm sector, saying high growth in exports was achieved in time of the pandemic, when India emerged as a major global supplier of food and essential agricultural products.

According to Suman Chowdhury, Chief Analytical Officer at Acute Ratings: “Given the growth headwinds generated from the Russia-Ukraine conflict, we expect the MPC to continue with the accommodative stance in the near term.” “There is also a low likelihood of any revision in the reverse repo rates although short term interest rates have already seen a material increase since the last MPC meeting in Feb-22.” In addition, Chowdhury expects a significant revision in the headline inflation forecast for FY23 which has been previously pegged by MPC at 4.5 per cent, since crude oil and other commodity prices have risen over the last two months.

MUMBAI, APR 4 (IANS): The Reserve Bank of India’s monetary policy committee is expected to retain key lending rates during the upcoming monetary policy review even as inflationary pressures continue to build-up. The MPC will review the monetary policy in its meeting during April 6-8. Accordingly, economists and industry experts cited the MPC’s strategic focus on growth as a key consideration to hold on rates. Nonetheless, the central bank’s MPC might do away with the accommodative stance in an indication of future rate hikes. Lately, high crude oil and commodity costs have started to reflect in retail prices. The official gauge of retail inflation -- CPI -- has been printing above the MPC’s upper threshold of 6 per cent in January and February 2022. “We expect a status-quo to be maintained

SAN FRANCISCO/ NEW DELHI, APR 4 (IANS): Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk who used Twitter for various reasons -- from infuriating the US regulators with businessrelated tweets to making fun of world leaders -- has acquired 9.2 per cent share worth nearly $3 billion in Parag Agrawal-run platform, Twitter announced on Monday. The surprising news led Twitter stock surge nearly 23 per cent in premarket trade. “Amount beneficially owned: 73,486,938 shares consisting of shares of Common Stock held by the Elon Musk Revocable Trust dated July 22, 2003 for which Elon Musk is the sole Trustee,” Twitter said in its regulatory filing with the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). Elon Musk shares will make Musk Twitter’s largest sole shareholder. Last month, Musk said he is considering building a new social media platform, in a possible hint of him acquiring a stake in Twitter. “Am giving serious thought to this,” he wrote on the micro-blogging site in a reply to a user. Musk has been a vocal critic of social media platforms, including Twitter. In a Twitter poll, Musk had asked: “do you believe Twitter rigorously adheres to this principle?” and at least “70 per cent” of respondents said “no”.
RAMALLAH, APR 4 (IANS): Palestine has called on intervention from the international community to stop the recent tension between Israelis and Palestinians in the West Bank and East Jerusalem. Palestine called on the International Criminal Court (ICC) to “investigate the violations and the assaults of the Israeli army and the Israeli settlers against the Palestinians”, Xinhua news agency quoted the Foreign Ministry here as saying in a statement. “These crimes are an explicit call to explode the situation and ignite violence and chaos during the holy month of Ramadan,” the statement said. The Ministry called on the international community to ensure international protection for the Palestinians in the West Bank, East Jerusalem, and the Gaza Strip. Since March 31, at least six Palestinians have been killed by Israeli soldiers in the West Bank, including three members of the Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ).

“After sur viving a pandemic, it is unacceptable to still have 7 million preventable deaths and countless preventable lost years of good health due to air pollution,” said Dr Maria Neira, head of WHO’s department of environment, climate change and health. “Yet too many investments are still being sunk into a polluted environment rather than in clean, healthy air.” The database, which has traditionally considered two types of particulate matter known as PM2.5 and PM10, for the first time has included ground measurements of nitrogen dioxide. The last version of the database was issued in
2018. N i t r o g e n d i ox i d e originates mainly from human-generated burning of fuel, such as through automobile traffic, and is most common in urban areas. Exposure can bring respiratory disease like asthma and symptoms like coughing, wheezing and difficulty in breathing, and more hospital and emergency-room admissions, WHO said. The highest concentrations were found in the eastern Mediterranean region. cation Minister. Johnston Fernando has been made the new Minister of Highways. The new appointments came after President Gotabaya invited all political parties to join a unity Cabinet as part of the government’s bid to tackle the raging public anger against the ongoing hardships caused by the island nation’s worst economic crisis. There have been mass public agitations against the ruling Rajapaksa family for its mishandling of the economic situation triggered by the foreign exchange crisis and the balance of payment issues. The public thronged the streets asking the president to resign. The protests triggered the imposition of curfew after a state of emergency was declared by the President. When the protests intensified, the government clamped a social
media ban for 15 hours on Sunday. The people defied the curfew to protest against long queues for fuel and gas and long hours without electricity. Governor of the Central Bank Ajith Nivard Cabraal has also announced his resignation. “In the context of all Cabinet ministers resigning, I have today submitted my resignation as Governor,” he said. Cabraal, 67, was blamed for his rigid stance on Sri Lanka seeking an economic bailout through an IMF structural adjustment facility. Despite his opposition, the government in the last fortnight approached the international lender for support. During his governorship, the Central Bank was accused of printing large volumes of money, triggering inflation.
Pak’s apex court adjourns hearing by a day on rejection of no-trust vote ISLAMABAD, APR 4 (PTI): Pakistan’s Supreme Cour t on Monday adjourned the hearing by a day in the high-profile case about the rejection of a no-confidence motion by the deputy speaker of the National Assembly and the subsequent dissolution of Parliament. A larger bench of the apex court - comprising Chief Justice Umar Ata Bandial, Justice Ijazul Ahsan, Justice Mazhar Alam Khan Miankhel, Justice Munib Akhtar and Justice Jamal Khan Mandokhail - took up the matter after Deputy Speaker Qasim Suri rejected the move to dislodge the prime minister by declaring the no-trust motion unmaintainable due to its link with a so-called foreign conspiracy. President Arif Alvi, the Supreme Court Bar Association and all political parties have been made respondents in the case. Lawyers from the government and opposition presented their argument regarding the ruling by the deputy speaker. During the
‘99% of world’s population breathes poor-quality air’ GENEVA, APR 4 (AP): The UN health agency says nearly everybody in the world breathes air that doesn’t meet its standards for air quality, calling for more action to reduce fossil-fuel use, which generates pollutants that cause respiratory and blood-flow problems and lead to millions of preventable deaths each year. The World Health Organisation, about six months after tightening its guidelines on air quality, on Monday issued an update to its database on air quality that draws on information from a growing number of cities, towns, and villages across the globe — now totaling over 6,000 municipalities. WHO said 99 per cent of the global population breathes air that exceeds its air-quality limits and is often rife with particles that can penetrate deep into the lungs, enter the veins and arteries, and cause disease. Air quality is poorest in WHO’s Easter n Mediterranean and Southeast Asia regions, followed by Africa, it said.

sources like desert dust. The developing world is particularly hard hit: India had high levels of PM10, while China showed high levels of PM2.5, the database showed. “Particulate matter, especially PM2.5, is capable of penetrating deep into the lungs and entering the bloodstream, causing cardiovascular, cerebrovascular (stroke) and respiratory impacts,” WHO said. “There is emerging evidence that particulate matter impacts other organs and causes other diseases as well.” The findings highlight the sheer scale of the changes needed to combat air pollution, said Anumita Roychowdhury, an air pollution expert at Centre for Science and Environment, a research and advocacy organisation in New Delhi. India and the world need to brace for major changes to try to curb air pollution: electric vehicles; a shift away from fossil fuels; a massive scaling-up of green energy; and households separating their types of waste, she said.

arguments, the chief justice rejected the opposition’s plea for a full bench. “The court will hear all representatives of the parties before concluding the hearing,” the chief justice said during the hearing. Later, the court adjourned the case until 12pm on Tuesday. Chief Justice Bandial had earlier in the day said the court would issue a “reasonable order” today on the issue. During the proceedings, Justice Ahsan noted that there were violations in the proceedings of the no-trust resolution, Dawn reported. Justice Bandial observed that a debate before
voting on the no-confidence motion had been clearly mentioned in the law but didn’t take place. Meanwhile, Justice Akhtar expressed dubiousness over the deputy speaker’s constitutional authority to pass such a ruling, the paper said. In my opinion, he said, only the speaker had the right to pass the ruling. “The deputy speaker chairs the session on the non-availability of the speaker.” Justice Bandial also observed that the deputy speaker’s ruling mentioned the meeting of the parliamentary committee for security. “The opposition deliberately didn’t attend the meeting,” he said.

Pakistan’s former chief justice Gulzar Ahmed was on Monday nominated for the office of the caretaker prime minister by incumbent Imran Khan, amid ongoing political crisis in the country. Former information minister and senior leader of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf party Fawad Chaudhry said that the premier made the decision after approval from the party’s core committee. The announcement comes after President Arif Alvi sent letters to Prime Minister Khan and Leader of the Opposition Shehbaz Sharif on Monday seeking suggestions for the appointment of a caretaker prime minister. “In response to the President’s letter, after consultation and approval by the PTI Core Committee, Prime Minister Imran Khan has nominated Pakistan’s former chief justice Gulzar Ahmed for the post of caretaker Prime Minister,” Chaudhry said. In his letter, President Alvi told them in case they do not agree on the appointment within three days of the dissolution of the Parliament, they shall forward two nominees each to a committee to be constituted by the Speaker, comprising eight members of the outgoing assembly, or the Senate, or both, having equal representation from the treasury and the opposition.

tor has opened a probe to investigate the conflict, but the latest reports ratcheted up the condemnation even further, with Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and some Western leaders going so far as to accuse Russia of genocide. In a video shown during the Grammy Awards in Las Vegas for musicians and other artists, Zelenskyy implored them to support his nation and “fill the silence with your music”. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov rejected the allegations, describing the scenes outside Kyiv as a “stage-managed antiRussian provocation”. The images of battered corpses lying in the streets or hastily dug graves unleashed a wave of outrage that could signal a turning point in the nearly six-week-old war. However, sanctions have thus far failed to halt the offensive, and rising energy prices along with tight controls on the Russian currency market have blunted their impact, with the ruble rebounding strongly after initially crashing. Western and Ukrainian leaders have accused Russia of war crimes before, and the International Criminal Court’s prosecu-
war crimes and other serious violations as well as the responsible government officials and military leaders will be held accountable,” he added. French President Emmanuel Macron on Monday said there was “clear evidence of war crimes” in Bucha that demanded new measures. “I’m in favour of a new round of sanctions and in particular on coal and petrol. We need to act.” Poland’s Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki described Russia as a “totalitarian-fascist state”, saying “the bloody massacres perpetrated by Russian soldiers deserve to be called by name: This is genocide.” Spain’s Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez also used the word “genocide”, saying those responsible should answer for their crimes. The crime of genocide is difficult to prove, as prosecutors would have to show that the killers or their commanders had a “specific intent” to partially or wholly destroy a group of people. I n t h e m e a n t i m e, the US and its allies have sought to punish Russia for the invasion by imposing sweeping economic sanctions. However, they may be reluctant to impose measures that cause further harm to a global economy still recovering from the coronavirus pandemic.

BUCHA (UKRAINE), APR 4 (AP): Russia faced a fresh wave of condemnation on Monday after evidence emerged of what appeared to be deliberate killings of civilians in Ukraine. Some Western leaders called for further sanctions in response, even as Moscow continued to press its offensive in the country’s east. Germany’s defence minister suggested the European Union discuss a ban on Russian gas imports, but more senior officials indicated an immediate boycott was not possible — a sign that leaders could struggle in the short-term to ramp up already severe sanctions on Russia. Ukrainian officials said the bodies of 410 civilians were found in towns around capital Kyiv that were recaptured from Russian forces in recent days. In Bucha, northwest of the capital, Associated Press journalists saw 21 bodies. One group of nine, all in civilian clothes, were scattered around a site that residents said Russian troops used as a base. They appeared to have been shot at close range. At least two had their hands tied behind their backs. In Motyzhyn, to the west of Kyiv, AP journalists saw the bodies of four people who appeared to have been shot at close range and thrown into

Spurs thrash Newcastle 5-1 to move to 4th in EPL
LONDON, APR 4 (PTI): Tottenham powered above north London rival Arsenal into the English Premier League top four for at least one day by thrashing Newcastle 5-1. Ben Davies, Matt Doherty, Son Heung-min, Emerson Royal and substitute Steven Bergwijn scored at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium for Spurs, who have netted more goals (30) than any other team in the league in 2022. Newcastle took the l e a d t h r o u g h Fa b i a n Schar’s free kick in the 39th minute but couldn’t handle the relentless attacks of Tottenham. They came from all angles, with wing backs Doherty and Royal even popping up to score rare goals. Tottenham moved into fourth place on goal difference ahead of Arsenal, which has two games in hand the first coming at Crystal Palace on Monday. Tottenham and Arsenal are five points behind thirdplaced Chelsea. Newcastle has lost three straight games in the league, having previously gone eight games unbeaten, and is still not safe from relegation in 15th place nine points above the bottom three.

Both sides had chances, with Gerard Pique’s header against the bar the best of all, but Barcelona did just enough to deserve the win that leaves them 12 points behind Real Madrid with a game in hand, Xinhua reports. On Saturday, Real Madrid won controversially away to Celta Vigo in a game that saw referee Gonzalez Fuentes award Madrid three penalties and rule out a Celta goal for offside. Karim Benzema put Madrid ahead in the 19th minute from the penalty spot after Nolito clipped Eder Militao’s heel as he was preparing to shoot. Fuentes then ruled out an equaliser for Celta, deciding that the offside Iago Aspas had interfered with play when Thiago Galhardo’s header ended in the back of the net. Celta equalised in the 52nd minute when Nolito scored from close range,

but although Benzema saw a penalty saved in the 63rd minute after Rodrygo had gone down, the Frenchman scored the third penalty of the afternoon after Ferland Mendy was judged to have been fouled on the edge of the Celta area. Joao Felix and Luis Suarez both scored twice as Atletico Madrid won 4-1 at home to Alaves. Joao put Atletico ahead after 11 minutes, although Alaves dug in and deserved Gonzalo Escalante’s 63rd minute equalizer. Atletico had enough to come back to win the game, with Suarez scoring a 75th-minute penalty
before Joao Felix scored a third with eight minutes left to play, and Suarez added a fourth in the last minute. Atletico move third after Sevilla’s defeat, while Real Betis remain fifth, four points behind their neighbors, after two firsthalf goals from Juanmi put them on the way to a 4-1 win at home to Osasuna. Ante Budimir pulled a goal back for the visitors in the 65th minute, but a moment of magic from William Carvalho made it 3-1 and Alex Moreno added fourth with two minutes left to play. Athletic Bilbao moved to within a point of the
top seven with a 2-1 win at home to Elche with a spectacular volley from Alex Berenguer and Asier Villalibre’s first goal of the campaign. Athletic controlled the game for 90 minutes, but had to survive a few nervous moments at the end after Jose Antonio scored Elche’s only chance of the game in injury-time. Cadiz edged a point further away from the bottom three with a 0-0 draw away to Valencia in a game of very few chances, while Granada saved a point with another controversial penalty in a 2-2 draw at home to Rayo Vallecano.
Lakers beaten by Nuggets in 6th consecutive defeat Maharaj, Harmer help SA thrash B’desh by 220-run LO N D O N, A P R 4 (AGENCIES): The Los Angeles Lakers’ bid to reach the play-ins has been put in serious doubt by a sixth consecutive defeat in going down to the Denver Nuggets. Nikola Jovic had 38 points and 18 rebounds as the Nuggets won 129-118, with Will Barton adding 25 points, BBC reported. Playing at home, the Lakers missed LeBron James, who has a sore ankle. “It sucks,” said Lakers coach Frank Vogel. “Sucks telling these guys after every game, ‘I’m proud of you. Good effort. We lost.’ “So, it’s not fun, but it could be worse. It’s easy to unravel. Our group has stayed together. They’re putting up the good fight. Their attitude has been wonderful, in terms of just working together to get this thing right. “And it’s just disappointing to come in to keep saying we fell short.” The Lakers, 17-time NBA champions, sit 11th

in the Western Conference, having been beset by injuries throughout the season. Teams from seventh to 10th in the Eastern Conference and Western Conference progress to the playins. Two teams from each division can then secure a place in the end-of-season play-offs.
Anthony Davis, who top-scored for the Lakers with 28 points, said: “I think the biggest thing that I think about personally is what we could have been, had we stayed healthy all year. “What could we have been. Guys feel like, ‘OK, what could we have
been if I was healthy all year, [LeBron James] was healthy, [Kendrick] Nunn was healthy’. You think about those things. We put this team together and it looked good on paper, but we haven’t had a chance to reach that potential with guys in and out of the line-up.”
D U R BA N, A P R 4 (IANS): Spinners Keshav Maharaj and Simon Harmer spun a ruthless web around Bangladesh as the visitors were bowled out for just 53 within the first hour of day five’s play, handing South Africa a 220-run win and a 1-0 lead in the twomatch series at Kingsmead Stadium on Monday. The main architect of Bangladesh’s demolition was left-arm spinner Maharaj, who finished with figures of 7/32 in 10 overs, his career-best figures. Resuming from 11/3, Bangladesh wobbled spectacularly for 53 in just 19 overs, their second-lowest total in Test cricket and also the lowest innings score at this venue. Najmul Hossain Shanto (26) and Taskin Ahmed (14) were the only two batters who reached double digits for Bangladesh in their second innings. Giving him valuable support was off-spinner Harmer, who took 3/21 in nine overs and com-

pleted his comeback to Test cricket with seven wickets overall. Senior wicketkeeper-batter Mushfiqur Rahim was back in the pavilion in the very first over of the day after being trapped lbw by for a duck. Maharaj followed it up by dismissing Liton Das for 2, reducing Bangladesh to 16/5. Shanto and Yasir Ali tried playing some aggressive shots to stop the slide. But Maharaj struck once again, bringing up his fivefor by knocking off Ali’s off stump with an absolute
beauty of a delivery. After getting smashed for a six down the ground by Shanto, Harmer bounced back with the scalp of Mehidy Hasan for a duck. Shanto’s resistance finally ended when he was dismissed off a smart stumping by wicketkeeper Kyle Verreynne as Harmer foxed him with flight, dip and turn. Maharaj picked up a wicket each in his final
two overs and completed his seven-for as Bangladesh folded meekly for 53. The two teams will next clash in Gqeberha (previously Port Elizabeth) in the second and final Test, starting April 7. BRIEF SCORES: South Africa 367 & 204 beat Bangladesh 298 & 53 all out in 19 overs (Najmul Hossain Shanto 26, Keshav Maharaj 7/32, Simon Harmer 3/21) by 220 runs.

IPL: Avesh, Holder guide LSG to win over SRH
NAVI MUMBAI, APRIL 4 (IANS): Avesh Khan and Jason Holder shared seven wickets between themselves as Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) defeated Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) by 12 runs in match 12 of IPL 2022 at the DY Patil Stadium on Monday. After Deepak Hooda and captain K.L Rahul hit fifties in taking Lucknow to 169/7, Avesh and Holder stopped Hyderabad from getting a move on in powerplay as well as in death overs as they were eventually restricted to 157/9 in 20 overs. Hyderabad began the chase by losing openers, captain Kane Williamson and Abhishek Sharma in power-play to Avesh. While Williamson’s scoop was caught by a short fine-leg, Sharma sliced high off the toe-end of his bat to cover. Rahul Tripathi kept Hyderabad in the hunt by slamming three fours off Andrew Tye in the eighth over. Tripathi placed his shots well in bisecting legside fielders with his pull and flick. But the standout shot from the over was him using the pace from Tye’s short ball to ramp over the third man. But Lucknow continued to pick wickets as Krunal Pandya removed

by pulling Pandya over long leg for six. Pooran then slammed delightful legside boundaries off Holder before producing an eyecatchy drive off Bishnoi. But Avesh tilted the scales in Lucknow’s favour by forcing Pooran in miscueing to long-off on a low full toss in the 18th over. On the very next ball, Khan found a faint inside edge on a drive by Abdul Samad which was pouched by the keeper behind. With 16 runs needed off the final over, Washington Sundar holed out to long-on off Holder. Holder followed it up by deceiving Bhuvneshwar Kumar with a slower delivery which took the leading edge high to the keeper and ended the match by having Romario Shepherd slicing to point as three wickets fell in the final over, which yielded only three runs. BRIEF SCORES: Lucknow Super Giants 169/7 in 20 overs (KL Rahul 68, Deepak Hooda 51; T. Boxing: Monika stuns two-time World Championship medallist NEW DELHI, APR 4 (PTI): Boxer Monika (48kg) upstaged two-time Wo r l d C h a m p i o n s h i p medallist Josie Gabuco of the Philippines to enter the semifinals along with two other Indians at the Thailand Open here on Monday. Ashish Kumar (81kg) and Manisha (57kg) are the two other Indian pugilists who also made their way into the last four with contrasting wins against their respective Thai opponents. The 26-year-old Monika, who hails from Rohtak, prevailed 4-1 over experienced campaigner Gubuco, who won gold and bronze medals at the World Championships in 2012 and 2008 respectively. She will now face Vietnam’s Trinh Thi Diem Kieu, who received bye in the last round. Competing in his first international tournament since the Tokyo Olympics, last edition’s gold medallist Ashish notched a 5-0 win against local boxer Aphisit Khankhokkhruea in the 81kg quarterfinals. The Indian will now clash win Indonesia’s Maikhel Roberrd Muskita in the semifinals. It was a good day in the ring for Manisha, who recently qualified for the upcoming World Cham-

However, Renu (54kg) and Monika (63kg) lost their opening round clashes. While Renu gave a tough fight to Italy’s European U-22 champion Sirine Charaabi, it wasn’t enough as the Indian lost 2-3 in the quarterfinal clash. Monika, on the other hand, went down in the quarterfinals, losing to Youth Olympic champion local boxer Panpatchara Somnuek by RSC verdict (Refree Stops Contest) in the third round. On the third day of the competition on Tues-
day, Sumit and Gaurav Chauhan will play their quarter-finals against respective opponents from Kazakhstan. Sumit (75kg), who received bye in the last opening round, will take on Timur Nurseitov while Gaurav (91kg) will fight against 2018 Youth Olympics champion Aibek Oralbay. The tournament features 130 boxers -- 74 male and 56 females. Gold medal winners will earn USD 2000, while silver and bronze winners will pocket USD 1000 and USD 500 respectively. The Indian contingent had won eight medals, including one gold, four silver and three bronze, in the last edition of the tournament, held in 2019.
P V Sindhu, Lakshya Sen to lead Alcaraz claims Miami Open title; Swiatek becomes world No.1 Indian challenge in Korea Open NEW DELHI, APR 4 (PTI): India’s latest badminton sensation Lakshya Sen and double Olympic medallist P V Sindhu will lead the Indian campaign at the Korea Open Super 500 tournament starting on Tuesday. With back-to-back finals at German Open and All England Championships, Sen is in the form of his life and will look to be third time lucky as he opens his campaign against world number 25 Lu Guang Zu of China. It will not, however, be an easy outing for Sen as the men’s singles draw boasts of some tough competitors such as the Indonesian duo of Anthony Ginting (top seed) and Jonatan Christie (third seed), world champion and fourth seed Loh Kean Yew, second seeded Malaysian Lee Zii Jia and the formidable Thai Kunlavut Vitidsarn, seeded eighth. Sen, the world championships bronze medallist, had scooped his maid-

en Super 500 crown at the India Open in January before making two final appearances and he will be keen to lift the second title of the season here. Sindhu, on the other hand, claimed two Super 300 titles this season at Syed Modi International and Swiss Open and the third seeded Indian will look to continue her fine run when she begins against USA’s Lauren Lam. Aya Ohori is likely
to be her next opponent, while two wins will put her face-to- face with either left-handed Supanida Katethong or Busanan Ongbamrungphan — both from Thailand. London Olympics bronze medallist Saina Nehwal has looked a pale shadow of her usual self in the past one year and a half and the Indian will be hoping to put up a better show when she begins against Japan’s Asuka Takahashi.
MIAMI, APR 4 (IANS): Teenage Spanish tennis player Carlos Alcaraz clinched the biggest ATP Tour title of his career, defeating sixth seed Casper Ruud of Norway, 7-5, 6-4 to lift the Miami Open trophy at Hard Rock Stadium on Monday. This is 18-year-old Alcaraz’s maiden ATP Masters 1000 title and his third tour-level crown and it made him the youngest Miami men’s champion in the tournament’s 37year history. Alcaraz also became the third-youngest ATP Masters 1000 champion overall, spanning 283 events from 1990, according to atptour.com. Alcaraz, who is the first Spanish champion at the event, will rise to a career-high of No. 11 in the latest ATP Rankings when they are released later on Monday. Only American Michael Chang (Toronto 1990) and Spain’s Rafael Nadal (2005 Monte Carlo) were younger that Alcaraz’s 18 years and 333 days when they won their first ATP
Masters 1000 titles. Alcaraz replaced Serbia’s Novak Djokovic as the youngest Miami champion, with the world No. 1 taking the 2007 title at the age of 19, when Alcaraz was three years old. In addition to becoming the youngest winner in tournament history, Alcaraz becomes the first Spanish male player to claim the title following eight previous final appearances, including five by Nadal.
Iga Swiatek first player from Poland to reach world no. 1
Poland’s tennis star Iga Swiatek officially became the world No.1 women’s tennis player when the rankings for the week were announced on Monday. In a history-making achievement, the 20-yearold Swiatek -- who defeated Japan’s Naomi Osaka in the Miami Open (WTA 1000 event) final on Sunday -- became the first player from Poland to reach No. 1 in either ATP or WTA rankings history. The previous highest-

ranked player from Poland was AgnieszkaRadwanska, who was No. 2 on the WTA rankings in 2012 and 2016, according to tennis. com. Swiatek is also the first player born in the 2000s to reach No. 1 in either ATP or WTA rankings history. Swiatek has become world No. 1 on the back of a superb last six weeks, where she has won 17 matches in a row to capture back-to-back WTA 1000 titles at Doha, Indian Wells and Miami. At 20, she is
Iga Swiatek
the youngest woman ever to do a ‘Sunshine Double’ -- Indian Wells and Miami Open titles in the same year. She is also the fourth woman overall after Germany’s Steffi Graf (1994 and 1996), Belgium’s Kim Clijsters (2005) and Belarusian Victoria Azarenka (2016) to do a ‘Sunshine Double’. Swiatek’s coronation as world No. 1 got fasttracked when Australia’s Ash Barty announced her retirement last month. The latest rankings saw Barty’s
name being removed from the WTA ranking. ”Even if Barty hadn’t retired and her name removed from the WTA rankings, Swiatek would have been on the verge of No. 1 anyway -- Barty would have had 6,980 ranking points this week, and Swiatek now has 6,771 ranking points,” according to tennis.com. Meanwhile, Paula Badosa of Spain and Danielle Collins of the US rose to new highs of No. 3 and No. 8, respectively, after making the quarterfinals in Miami.
Jr Women’s Hockey: Kharibam thwarts Germany as India enter QFs MTLT appeals incentives for GAMMA winners
NEW DELHI, APR 4 (AGENCIES): Every two minutes, on average, a rampaging German under-21 team entered the Indian ‘D’ in a desperate attempt to reduce the deficit. They took 22 shots in all at the Indian goal. On most days, this kind of dominance would have been enough for Germany to not just erase the two-goal advantage India enjoyed but perhaps even pump in a few more. Not on Sunday, though. And the reason was largely one – India’s goalkeeper, Bichu Devi Kharibam. The 21-year-old made nearly a dozen saves, pulled off a blinder to thwart a German penalty stroke – diving low to her right and flinging her stick to stop the ball from going in – and, along with a stubborn defence, made sure the European heavyweights could not convert any of their eight penalty corners. Kharibam’s stellar performance in goal helped India record a thrilling 2-1 win over Germany in the
Goalkeeper Bichu Devi Kharibam in action.
Under-21 World Cup in Potchefstroom and secure a place in the quarterfinals with a match in hand. India currently top Pool D, having already defeated Wales on Saturday. They will take on Malaysia in their final group-stage match on Tuesday and are on course to meet South Korea in the last eight. Although they were solid defensively, it’ll be unfair to label India’s performance as defensive. The team, coached by Eric Wonink, surprised
Germany by coming aggressively off the blocks and earned a penalty corner inside the opening two minutes. Drag-flicker Deepika unleashed a powerful strike, which was saved by German goalkeeper Mali Wichmann but experienced Lalremsiami, one of the stars of India’s Tokyo Olympics campaign, picked up the rebound and used the space to find the target. Stung by the early setback, Germany – who had pumped in 10 goals against
Malaysia in their opening match – stepped up the pressure immediately, using their tactical expertise and composure to bypass the Indian midfield and push the Indian defence deep. Germany’s incessant pressure seemed to have paid off in the 22nd minute, when they forced an error from an Indian defender, resulting in the umpire awarding a penalty stroke. But Kharibam pulled off a stunning save, diving low to her right and managing to get her stick to stop the ball from going in. To add insult to injury for Germany, Mumtaz Khan doubled India’s lead two minutes later, through a brilliantly executed penalty corner variation. After that goal, it was virtually a match between India’s goalkeeper and Germany’s attackers. India did try to break on the counterattack, using their speed and creativity to push forward but it did not result in more goals. Germany, on the other hand, were continuously
frustrated by Kharibam, who showed why she is rated as one of India’s brightest young talents. While she was well supported by the defence, comprising vice-captain Ishika Chaudhary, Akshata Dhekale, Baljeet Kaur and Lalramnghaki Marina, especially during penalty corners, Kharibam stood like a rock every time the Indian goal was exposed. Her citadel was finally breached in the 57th minute. Throwing in the proverbial kitchen sink, Germany removed their goalkeeper to field an extra outfield player and the move worked immediately as Jule Bleuel unleashed a powerful back-handed strike from the top of the ‘D’, which Kharibam could not save. At that moment, it looked like India would wilt under the pressure but Kharibam’s saves kept the players’ spirits up as they survived some tense moments over the final three minutes to hold on to the lead and seal the quarterfinal berth.
