Modi working for development of India Covid death toll highest in world: WHO remote cities, towns & villages: MoS

India objects; says methodology is questionable

cludes deaths directly due to Covid19 disease or indirectly due to the pandemic’s impact on health systems and society. It is calculated as the difference between the number of deaths that have occurred and the number that would be expected in the absence of pandemic based on data from earlier years. WHO has also released the methodology followed by it to arrive at these numbers. It said the information was either reported directly by the states through official reports and automatic vital registration, or by journalists who obtained death registration information through RTI. A statement from the Union Health Ministry said India has been ‘consistently objecting’ to the methodology adopted by WHO to project excess mortality estimates based on mathematical models. “Despite India’s

objection to the process, methodology and outcome of this modelling exercise, WHO has released the excess mortality estimates without adequately addressing India’s concerns,” the Health Ministry said. Owing to its large area, diversity and a population of 1.3 billion which witnessed variable severity of the pandemic both across space and time, India consistently objected to the use of “one size fits all” approach and model, which may be applicable to smaller countries but cannot be applicable to India, it said. In spite of these differences, India continued to collaborate and coordinate with WHO on this exercise and multiple formal communications -- 10 times from November 2021 to May 2022 -- as well as numerous virtual interactions were held with the global body.

D I M A P U R , M AY 5 (NPN): Union Minster of State for Electronics &IT and Skill Development & Entrepreneurship Rajeev Chandrasekhar has claimed that Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s team was working relentlessly with State and local self-governments for development of remote cities, towns and villages like Longwa. He said this while interacting with residents of border village Longwa and members of village council. Currently on a threeday tour, Chandrasekhar started his day-2 by visiting District Civil Hospital at Mon and interacted with doctors and other frontline workers who played a critical role in fighting Covid pandemic in the district. He said the Centre had approved a Rs 350-crore medical college project for (Cont’d on p-8) boosting healthcare facilities

NEW DELHI, MAY 5 (AGENCIES): Nearly 4.7 million people died in India because of Covid-19, either directly due to the disease or indirectly due its impact on health systems and the society, said a World Health Organization’s (WHO) report on Thursday. The number of deaths is 10-times more than given by India’s government, which rejected the WHO’s report. India has officially recorded 481,486 Covid19 deaths between January 1 2020 and December 31, 2021. Therefore, the WHO estimates put that figure at nearly 10-times the official estimates, and basically imply that India accounts for

about a third of the Covid19 deaths across the world. WHO report pegs the deaths related to Covid19 at 47, 40,894 during 2020 and 2021. It said that the full death toll associated directly or indirectly with Covid-19

For mation of new unions: CTYO has appealed to the general public not to form any new unions/organizations that could only add burden on the public in Chümoukedima town. CTYO observed that after the formation of Chümoukedima district many new unions and organizations have come up and this has only cast doubts about the genuineness or motive behind the formation of some of them. It has urged all responsible to follow the guidelines through proper channel if they need to form a genuine one after thorough consultation with all stakeholders.

No to taxation: The youth body pointed out that multiple elements have begun to emerge again solely for the purpose of collection of “tax”. It said this has only caused hardship to business community and general public of Chümoukedima town. CTYO warned that antisocial elements would not be tolerated, and strict action would be taken against those indulging in unlawful demands. CTYO also reaffirmed that it will remain steadfast on the declaration of “One government, one taxation”. It reminded that citizens of Chümoukedima unanimously resolved to pay tax to

only one entity as per of February 13, 2014 resolution. Peace under Chuümou: CTYO reiterated that it would not tolerate any activities that disrupted the peace of Chümoukedima town. CTYO cautioned that it would strictly deal with those drinking in public places and indulging in substance abuse, rowdy and intoxicated behaviour, loud music during the wee hours etc. CTYO has asked business establishments to check their inventory for expired goods and refrain from selling such items or any items beyond the MRP. D I M A P U R , M AY 5 (NPN): Forum for Naga Reconciliation (FNR) has reaffirmed that there must be no miscarriage of justice and truth must be told for justice to be delivered in Oting and Mon incidents on December 4 and 5, 2021 respectively that claimed lives of 14 innocent civilians. Stressing that investigation and its findings were a matter of public interest, the forum in a statement demanded that Special Investigation Team (SIT) report must be made public to ensure that justice prevailed

of the border district with Central assistance to the tune of around Rs 292 crore. Thereafter, he travelled to Longwa village, where he was warmly received by members of village council led by its chairman Amao Angh, vice-chairman C Noklem Konyak and S Yona Pastor among others. The minister reviewed the progress of development and welfare schemes in Mon district with deputy com-

and as a gesture of transparency and accountability to the affected families and community. It also called for revealing the perpetrators’ role in the violence committed with impunity under the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA). FNR regretted that after five months since SIT investigation was initiated, the State government had made no official statement about the status of the SIT probe or its report with various political leaders having commented that the delay was due to the awaited fo-

missioner, superintendent of police and other district administration officials. He directed the officials to focus saturating key schemes so that all benefits were made available to every beneficiary and no one was left behind. He also asked the authorities to prepare a detailed District Skill Development Plan by mapping local skills and market. (Cont’d on p-8)

rensic reports. Alleging that the government’s handling of the investigation was disingenuous and lacked political sincerity and integrity, it said the inaction had further traumatised the affected family members and community, while deepening people’s distrust. Declaring that it stood firmly in solidarity with Konyak people through Konyak Union (KU) and Konyak civil society organisations (CSOs), FNR insisted that the government must act (Cont’d on p-8)

Cancel TL of unauthorised NSU cautions illegal timber operations Covid spread 1,000 times more optical shops: H&FW deptt likely from air than surfaces

D I M A P U R , M AY 5 (NPN): Health & Family Welfare (H&FW) department has asked municipal authorities to cancel the trade license (TL) of those optical shops run by unqualified persons. In a notification dated April 28, the department also requested municipal authorities to not issue TL to anybody without valid registration certificate of ophthalmologists with NMC registration and Nagaland Optometric Association. The department observed that there were many

optical shops operating in the state without qualified eye care professional. It said that those optical shops were dispensing power glasses without the help of eye care professionals such as ophthalmologists, optometrists and ophthalmic assistants. H&FW said that such act is illegal as wrong prescription of power glasses could permanently endanger the eye sight. The department also observed that most of those shops were operating with mere trade license issued by municipal authorities.

D I M A P U R , M AY 5 (NPN): Nkio Students’ Union (NSU) has warned all “illegal timber” operators within its jurisdiction, to stop further extraction of timber and exploitation of natural vegetation and forest cover, in compliance with decision of civil society organisations’ (CSOs). In a statement, NSU claimed that the Forest department had approved a working scheme for timber operation with an extension only to three village councils in Peren district– New Ngaulong (20-21 to 24-25), Lalong village (2020-21 to 22-23), and Paikolom

(2017,2018,2021-2022) – and hence, there was no existing working scheme under Nkio jurisdiction. Consequently, it demanded that all tree extraction being conducted unabated under Nkio must be discontinued promptly. NSU also alleged that timber extraction in Nkio were being carried out under the cover of “tree farms” to cloak the illegal extraction of forest trees. NSU also disclosed that spider web-like roads were being constructed inside deep forests that served no purpose for public utility but only to hasten the destruction of irreplaceable

natural vegetation. The union said such indiscriminate destruction of forests and rampant illegal activities clearly indicated the hyper-negligence of the Forest department in executing its duty. NSU asked what was the forest department doing when such illegal activities were being carried out under their nose and whether or not, it was the duty of the department to inspect the site and take appropriate action? NSU also asked the department on whether it was only waiting for public outcry to carry out its responsibility (Cont’d on p-8)

For air samples, Xi and colleagues used wetted wall cyclone bioaerosol samplers, which suck in large volumes of air using a pump and capture any virus particles in the air. For surfaces, researchers used swab kits. Overall, between August 2020 and April 2021, the researchers collected 256 air samples and 517 surface samples. (Cont’d on p-8)
