Dimapur rally demands ‘Solution Not Election’ PUBLIC SAY ‘ENOUGH IS ENOUGH’; ENDORSES NPAC MEMORANDUM TO MODI
Staff Reporter
DIMAPUR, AUG 5 (NPN): Several thousand people turned up at Super Marker area here Friday to send a strong message to all stakeholders involved in 25 years of Naga political talks, that Nagas will no longer accept any excuse to justify delay since negotiations officially concluded on October 31, 2019 and therefore demand “Solution Not Election.” Shops across Dimapur and other districts such as-Kohima, Wokha, Mokokchung, Phek, Zunheboto and Shamator- remained shut from 10 am to 12 noon as mark of solidarity with NPAC in support of demand for early political solution. Thousands of people, many in traditional attires, filled up the long stretch of the road from Circuit HouseWalford Junction to Super

Market-Kuda village road junction. Some held placards that read-- “GoI should deliver what is promised”; “We want solution, not election”; “25 years of negotiations is a generation”; “Indo Naga political issue is people’s issue”; “Stop politicking solution”; “Do it or stop it”; “Civil societies real stake-
holders”; “No peace, No progress”; “No political will, No solution”, etc. Naga public of late have been resentful at the uncertainty of solution despite elected members having promised early solution since 2003 and holding unending consultative meetings with CSOs and trips to Delhi
to meet with central leaders to press for early solution. Some Naga elders also derided formations of allparty and opposition-less governments in 2015 and 2021, which they said were merely for headlines. After various organisations have held the legislators responsible for causing obstruction to
solution, despite the Centre expressing readiness for solution; the UDA government had to finally admit that talks have officially concluded and so appealed to the Centre to secure early solution. H o w e v e r , N PA C formed at a recent meeting of all Naga apex organisations has expressed deep suspicion that even after having admitted that talks have ended and that it was time for Centre to secure solution, the ruling NDPP and BJP have gone around to announce seat sharing arrangement for 2023. At the rally, a representation drafted by NPAC was read out and approved by the public. ment’s development funds can be converted into MGNREGA fund and number of days’ wages can be increased to more than 100 days. However, Therie said that in Nagaland wage funds were converted into special development activities and MLAs distributing those funds. He claimed that during 2020-2021, Rs. 483.82 lakh MGNREGA funds were released to Nagaland and were drawn. NPCC president claimed that some villages received just seven days’ wages during 20212022, which hardly accounted for Rs.60 crore, adding
the remaining was siphoned off. Stating that only those with unknown sources of income were thriving in the state, Therie said “they are all money laundering cases. Corruption is rampant for the last 20 years.” Meanwhile, Therie said he had “no difficulty in tendering apology to NPF turncoats, those that are clean before God.” Therie said he did not have evidence because of blank cheque system. However, he claimed that some were complaining that only Rs. 3 crore was given while Rs. 5 crore was given to others.

Vice presidential election today
(L-R) Jagdeep Dhankhar and Margaret Alva.
NEW DELHI, AUG 5 (PTI): Members of Parliament will vote on Saturday to elect the next Vice President of India in an election where NDA candidate Jagdeep Dhankhar is pitted against Opposition pick Margaret Alva. With numbers stacked in favour of the NDA, Dhankhar, former governor
of West Bengal, is set for an easy win. Cracks were visible in opposition unity as Mamata Banerjee’s Trinamool Congress decided to abstain from voting alleging lack of consultations while deciding on the name of Alva. The 80-year-old Alva is a Congress veteran and has served as governor of Rajasthan, while the
71-year-old Dhankhar is a Jat leader from Rajasthan with socialist background. While polling will be held from 10 am to 5 pm on Saturday, the ballots will be counted immediately after that. By late Saturday evening, the returning officer will announce the name of the next vice president. Members of Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha, including nominated members, are eligible to vote in the vice presidential poll. The term of incumbent M Venkaiah Naidu ends on August 10. The vice president is also the chairperson of Rajya Sabha. The electoral college in the vice presidential election comprises a total of 788 members of both Houses.

He said the government has taken several steps for adoption of EVs in the country.
If negotiators cannot deliver, wind it up and let people decide: NPAC Staff Reporter
D I M A P U R , AU G 5 (NPN): In a hard-hitting statement, Nagaland People’s Action Committee (NPAC) convener Theja Therieh demanded that if Government of India (GoI) and Naga political groups (NPGs) were not able to bring any solution, then they should just wind it up and let people decide their future. In an exclusive interview with Nagaland Post, Therie said, “If this negotiation cannot bring about any solution, then just wind it up and let the people decide what they want. I think we are capable of deciding what we want for our future. Don’t undermine the people.” Commenting on delay in solution due to differing positions over demand for separate Naga national flag and constitution despite 25 years of peace talks, he said the negotiating parties should know their parameters and hammer out a solution within those parameters. He mentioned that the negotiating parties knew what was possible and what was not, while government of India being the one engaging with the two Naga negotiating parties should not hang on to what was not permissible. The NPAC convener mentioned that without sovereignty as an agenda on the table and integration not practically workable at the moment, there was no requirement for constitution and even if it was required, then people should take the decision. “Even if the constitution is required,
constitution have to be of the people, by the people and for the people. The people will decide. We should not put the cart before the horse. Constitution should be derived from the people,” he stressed.
Excerpts of the interview
NP: Comment on the response and outcome of the rally? Therieh: Today’s rally was beyond expectation. NPAC was formed only in the month of July. We were not immediately active but we sought opinions for here and there. There is a desire from every nook and corner that people must be allowed to express what they have in their mind. There are so many people especially the business community who are in the frying pan. Every day they are suffering. People seems to be very anxious; people want to know whether there will be any outcome to our Naga political negotiations. So NPAC decided to organise a rally and see whether people would respond to it. The response was overwhelming, which means they have come for a very decisive expression and exertion of their mind and that exertion is very clear, people want solution. NPAC will work and voice out on behalf of the people, we will represent the voice of the people and we will represent the grassroot people. We have no intention to take up any other issue. 25 years is a very long period of time, it is a generation wasted. Government of India on October 31, 2019 made it very loud and clear that formal talk is over. If
formal talk is over then what is stopping government of India from implementing it? They are negotiating with two groups so they should know how to conclude it. They should bring these two negotiating points together and bring out one comprehensive, common draft and before signing it bring it to the people. What they have decided on behalf of the people must be made known to the people by either of our negotiators if not the government of India. Since it is the people’s movement, people must accept it then that will be lasting solution. If people don’t accept then you know things cannot go well, landing cannot be smooth and we want it to be smooth and acceptable by the people. NP: Naga society has maintained the position for last 25 years since peace talk began that GoI must expedite solution without delay. Today, solution remains elusive in view of the demand for separate Naga flag and constitution. Apart from urging GoI to expedite solution, what is new that NPAC wants to say? Therieh: The negotiating parties should know their own parameter. They say that this negotiation is without sovereignty as an agenda on the table. They say that integration is not practically workable at the moment. From their own expression, they say that sovereignty at the moment is not negotiable. From their own words, they say that integration at the moment is not workable. (Cont’d on p-6)
NSCN (I-M) CR affirms on flag, constitution DIMAPUR, AUG 5 (NPN): NSCN (I-M) Chakhesang Region (CR) Friday affirmed that it has taken “an absolute stand” as per earlier resolution not to accept Naga solution without a flag and constitution. NSCN (I-M) CR through MIP stated that it had “a critical introspection” of the “calamitous history” of the Naga political movement and noted how the Nagas were “cheated repeatedly” in the name of the Naga political solution. Stating that at present “another such Naga accord” was being planned in the same manner as how the 16 points agreement cheated the Nagas, the Chakhesang region affirmed its determination “not to allow Nagas’ honour and pride to be prostituted again.”

One of the speakers addressing the gathering at the inaugural programme on Friday. (NP)
Staff Reporter D I M A P U R , AU G 5 (NPN): North East Institute of Social Sciences and Research (NEISSR) and Peace Channel inaugurated a “Peace Centre”, at St Joseph campus, 7th mile, here on Friday. In his speech, Nagaland Baptist Council of Churches (NBCC) general secretary, Rev. Dr. Zelhou Keyho pointed out that Catholics have made tremendous impact in the
lives of Naga people and the society in general. Speaking on peace, he lamented that it was no longer understood as the absence of war. He said Nagas took pride in being hospitable, simple, honest and peace loving, but they have not become “good hosts to peace” and that they have become complicated, sticky and slippery with peace. In the context of war and conflict, peace-making, peace keeping and
conflict resolutions are systematically followed which rarely deals with the inner conflict to promote peaceful coexistence, the reverend stated. He asserted that it was important to identity negative energy in the society trying to tear down the fabric of peaceful living. Rev. Dr. Zelhou said the younger generation who were “main actors in the society” must create “a new album of love and peace”.
in his address as guest of honour, Nagaland University (NU), vice chancellor, professor Pardeshi Lal said that the Peace Centre will be significant in the context of bringing peace and harmony. He expressed hope that the centre would build personalities that will mind the society to move forward. Catholic Association of Nagaland (CAN) president, NSDMA joint CEO, home department, Nagaland Johnny Ruangmei said in order to make the future, people talk about peace, however, he said, peace cannot be something that awaits to happen. He said the need of the hour for Naga society was leaders who would be able to articulate the inner happenings of the society into reality. “If we look at Nagas, we want to live into pieces and not in peace, there are so many social organisations, churches and civil societies not in peace but into pieces”, he lamented. He further stated that it was time to articulate the real meaning of peace into the society. E a r l i e r, D e a n o f
school of public health and human development OP Jindal university, Haryana professor Stephen P Marks declared that the university will be signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Peace Centre. NEW DELHI, AUG 5 (PTI): The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has registered a case of negligence against the managing director and dentist of a private hospital in Gurugram in connection with the death of Rosy Sangma, a GoAir air-hostess from Nagaland, in June last year, people familiar with the matter said on Thursday. The CBI, on the directions of the Union Home Ministry, registered a case against doctors -- Managing Director of Alfa Health Care Dr Anuj Bisnoi and dentist Anjali Ashk. According to the CBI FIR, the two have been booked under Section 304 (death due to negligence) of the Indian Penal Code. Samuel Sangma, a relative of deceased Rosy Sangma, had an altercation with doctors and other hospital staff suspecting medical negligence, a Home Ministry statement had said. The next day, on June 25, the Delhi Police received information regarding the death of Samuel in the national capital. “The gross negligence of the
hospital and its doctors is also clear from the fact that the critical patient of vaginal bleeding is being treated by a Dentist who is not at all qualified for the same,” the CBI said in its preliminary inquiry findings. This preliminary inquiry showed that Rosy was admitted in the hospital for severe bleeding and pain on June 24, and Ashk was deputed to attend her, while main doctor Bisnoi came four-and-a-half hours later. The inquiry showed that even though Bisnoi was informed about Rosy’s serious condition, he gave instructions to Ashk, a dentist with no experience to handle gynaecological issues, to handle the case. At 10.45 AM, Bisnoi had asked Rosy’s relatives to bring blood from blood bank as it was an emergency. Bisnoi sent a letter to Bijwasan police station SHO informing that the patient, who was in a serious condition, had died. In another piece of information later, he told the police about suspected poisoning and foul play as the cause for her death and also claimed that she
was not responding to the treatment. He said she was being referred to civil hospital for further treatment. “The said information is carbon copy but the time 1.30 PM is mentioned in original blue ink,” the CBI said. Bisnoi prepared a discharge card of Rosy mentioning the time of admission at 6 AM and that of referral as 12 PM and also mentioned about blood transfusion, serious condition, gasping of patient and her referral to higher centre but actually “did not refer” her to any for further treatment, the CBI alleged. The Home Ministry had last year directed the CBI to probe the mysterious deaths of Rosy and her nephew Samuel, both from Nagaland’s Dimapur, on a complaint from MP Agatha Sangma to Home Minister Amit Shah. The family of the deceased has alleged that Rosy had died due to the hospital’s negligence. It had also alleged that Samuel died due to foul play by the hospital personnel, the home ministry statement had said.

Bandh imposed by ATSUM intensifies in Manipur
IMPHAL, AUG 5 (PTI): Intensifying its protest demanding more autonomy for the hill districts, the All Tribal Students’ Union Manipur (ATSUM) began “economic blockades” on two important national highways on Friday, hitting supplies coming from Assam. Several trucks coming from Assam were stranded on the Imphal-Dimapur highway (NH-2) and ImphalJiribam highway (NH-39) as protesters blocked the roads with boulders, besides burning tyres, officials said. The ATSUM was demanding the tabling of the Manipur (Hill Areas) Autonomous District Council (Amendment) Bill 2021 in the Monsoon session of the assembly for greater financial and administrative autonomy of the hill region to ensure development at par with the valley areas of the state. Instead, the N Biren Singh-led BJP government of the state introduced the Manipur

4 NLFT militants surrender with weapons in Tripura AG A RTA L A , AU G 5 (PTI): Four insurgents of outlawed National Liberation Front of Tripura (Biswamohan Debbarma) and two collaborators surrendered before the police on Friday, a senior police official said. They surrendered one AK-47 rifle and two magazines, two pistols with three magazines and a note book containing extortion notices, he said. This was the biggest surrender of militants in the state in the past one year. The north eastern state has not witnessed any major extremist-related incident since the past one year. The militants led by Umesh Koloi(42) had entered Tripura from Bangladesh through Ganganagar in Dhalai district on July 21, the official said. “The intention of these militants was to kidnap villagers and they
had sent extortion notices. They moved in the jungle areas of Ganganagar in Dhalai district, Mungiakami in Khowai district and Ompi in Gomati district”, he said. The intelligence department sensing their movement inside the state, carried out special operations by Tripura State Rifles and the police. “The pressure exerted by the security forces made the militants surrender before the police”, the official said. Preliminary investigation has revealed that NLFT has been facing hardships and their survival in their hideouts in the state has become difficult due to the continuous pressure of the security forces. “All the surrendered militants and their collaborators were handed over to the special branch of state police for joint interrogation”, he added.

Cong MPs stage protest against price rise RAHUL GANDHI AND PRIYANKA AMONG SEVERAL LEADERS DETAINED
N E W D E L H I , AU G 5 (PTI): Wearing black clothes, Congress leaders hit the streets on Friday to protest against price rise and unemployment with a host of them, including Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, being detained by police amid dramatic standoffs outside Parliament and the AICC headquarters here. Congress MPs, including former party chief Rahul Gandhi, staged a protest in the Parliament House complex and then proceeded to take out a march towards the Rashtrapati Bhawan as part of the party’s nationwide stir against price rise, the Goods and Services Tax (GST) hike on essential items and unemployment. The protesting MPs of the opposition party raised slogans against the government demanding that the GST hike on essential items be withdrawn, with party chief Sonia Gandhi standing with the women MPs holding a banner outside gate number 1 of Parlia-

ment. The protesters were, however, stopped by the Delhi Police and not allowed to proceed towards the Rashtrapati Bhawan. Sonia Gandhi did not take part in the march. The other MPs were detained by police at Vijay Chowk. Rahul Gandhi, senior Congress leaders K C Venugopal, Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury and Gaurav Gogoi were among the 64 MPs detained and taken away from Vijay Chowk in a police bus, party sources said. Talking to reporters at Vijay Chowk, Rahul Gandhi said, “We are here to raise the issue of price rise.”
He also said “democracy is being murdered”. Asked if the MPs were manhandled, he answered in the affirmative. “Our job is to resist these forces, our job is to ensure that democracy in India is protected, our job is to raise the issues of people. We are doing that,” the former Congress chief said. He alleged that some of the party MPs were even “beaten up” by police. Posting pictures from the protest at Vijay Chowk, Rahul Gandhi tweeted: “Democracy is a memory.” Earlier, in a tweet in Hindi, he said, “This dicta-
torial government is scared. From the condition of India, from the back-breaking inflation and historic unemployment, from the ruin brought by his policies, the one who is afraid of the truth threatens those who raise their voice!” Several Congress leaders, including Rahul Gandhi, wore black shirts, black kurtas or black bands on their arms. Also dressed in black, Priyanka Gandhi staged a sit-in protest outside the AICC headquarters here. She jumped across the police barricades put up on the road outside the party headquarters and squatted on the road, with the police personnel asking her to move from there as section 144 of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC) is in force in the entire area of New Delhi district except Jantar Mantar. Amid dramatic scenes outside the AICC headquarters, the Congress general secretary was forcibly put in a vehicle by police and taken away. In a video shot inside a
police vehicle and shared by the Congress with reporters, Priyanka Gandhi said, They think that by putting up a show of power, they can silence us and force us into a compromise. Why will we do that?” “Their ministers cannot see the price rise, so we wanted to walk to the prime minister’s house and show him the high inflation, show him the gas cylinder the price of which is sky high,” she said. “There is no inflation for (Prime Minister Narendra) Modi-ji. He has given away the country’s wealth to a few people.... Only those few people have become very rich, but the common man is suffering. They have a lot of money, they cannot see the price rise. Flour, rice, cooking gas -- everything has become expensive,” Priyanka Gandhi said. At Vijay Chowk, the Congress protesters were seen resisting police personnel who were trying to take them away.
Cong protest aim to save Gandhi family, Rahul shouldn’t blame democracy: BJP NEW DELHI, AUG 5 (PTI): The Congress’ protest against price rise and unemployment is essentially aimed at “saving” the Gandhi family from corruption charges, the BJP said on Friday and asked Rahul Gandhi to not blame Indian democracy for his party’s repeated poll defeats under him. Hitting back at Gandhi after he alleged that India is witnessing the “death of democracy” under Prime Minister Narendra Modi, BJP leader Ravi Shankar Prasad accused the Congress leader of making “shameful and irresponsible” comments. Prasad noted that it was Rahul Gandhi’s grandmother and then prime minister Indira Gandhi who had suspended people’s democratic rights by imposing Emergency. “Why do you blame democracy when the people of India reject you with repeated regularity,” he said and asked Gandhi if there is democracy within his party which has some “good leaders” but it is all about the
Ravi Shankar Prasad Gandhi family. In a press conference ahead of his party’s protests over the issues such as price rise and unemployment, Gandhi alleged that no institution in the country is independent and claimed that his family is attacked because it fights for democracy and communal harmony. Those who raise people’s issues and stand against the onset of dictatorship are “viciously attacked” and put in jail, he said. In his party’s counterattack, Prasad said, “Stop demeaning the institutions of India to safeguard your corruption and misdeeds... If people don’t listen to you why are you blaming us.”
If people saw dictatorship, it was during the Emergency when people, including opposition leaders and editors, were jailed, judges superseded and censorship imposed. Indira Gandhi had then spoken about having “committed judiciary,” the former law minister said. He highlighted the Enforcement Directorate’s probe against Rahul Gandhi and Congress president Sonia Gandhi in the National Herald case and said the former Congress president must answer as to how Young Indian, a firm in which the two Gandhis have 76 per cent stake, allegedly acquired the National Herald’s assets worth over Rs 5,000 crore with the investment of only Rs 5 lakh. The judiciary refused to quash charges against them and he was now blaming institutions, the BJP leader said. Rahul Gandhi will have to face consequences for what he has done, Prasad said. “You will have to face trial and answer the ED’s questions,” he added.
US, Aus among 6 countries interested in Tejas: Govt FIR against magazine over offending photo of Shiva, Kali NEW DELHI, AUG 5 (PTI): The US, Australia, Indonesia and the Philippines are among six countries, which have shown interest in India’s Tejas aircraft while Malaysia has already shortlisted the jet under its acquisition programme, the government said on Friday. The other two countries that have evinced interest in the aircraft are Argentina and Egypt, according to Minister of State for Defence Ajay Bhatt. Tejas, manufactured by Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd, is a single-engine multi-role fighter aircraft capable of operating in high-threat air environments. In February last year, the defence ministry sealed a Rs 48,000 crore deal with
HAL for the procurement of 83 Tejas light combat aircraft for the Indian Air Force (IAF). Replying to a question in Lok Sabha on Tejas, Bhatt said the HAL responded to a Request for Information (RFI) or initial tender received from Royal Malaysian Air Force in February 2019. Subsequently, the HAL responded in October 2021 to a Request For Proposal (RFP) issued by Malaysia
for 18 aircraft, adding the twin-seater variant of the Tejas was offered. Malaysia is procuring the aircraft to replace its ageing fleet of Russian MiG-29 fighter planes. The number of aircraft that Malaysia is looking at procuring is not immediately clear. “Other countries

Nagaland Post VOL. XXXII NO. 241 DIMAPUR, SATURDAY, AUGUST 6, 2022
Threat of global war
A
fter US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi made a whirlwind 24-hour ‘unscheduled’ visit to Taiwan, the rising tension between the US and China has even gotten worse as there are fears that Chinese leader Xi Jinping’s ego could push the region to the brink of a serious crisis. China claims scores of islands formerly called as Republic of China (RoC) and presently as Taiwan, as its own. From 1949 the erstwhile Republic of China (presently Taiwan) used to be recognized as China but it changed in 1971 when the communist giant China was rightly accorded the status as main China. In all cases, communist China far exceeds Taiwan by multiple times, on anything. China is 267 times bigger than Taiwan and its economy is also more by multiple times. However, tiny Taiwan is not overawed nor fearful of its mainland sister and despite being recognized by hardly a dozen of the around 195 countries in the world; the tiny nation is an economic giant. In fact, Taiwan is the world biggest manufacturer of very high-quality microchips. Taiwan dominates the foundry market, or the outsourcing of semiconductor manufacturing. Taiwan has the world’s largest foundry that counts major technology firms such as Apple, Qualcomm and Nvidia as its clients. The sad part is that even the UN does not recognize Taiwan but considers it as a province of China and so also the UK, USA and all nations. This has only fuelled China’s aim of ‘reuniting the two as ‘one China’. In fact, the UN and all western nations who rant and wail against Chinese belligerence, rights abuse and various unethical trade practices, share the same concept of ‘One China’. Nations across the globe have strong economic ties with Taiwan as the US does but are disinclined to accord the tiny nation recognition. China had warned the US of dire consequence if Nancy Pelosi dared visit Taiwan. According to US media sources, even US president Joe Biden tried to persuade Pelosi to not go to Taiwan lest it fuelled anger and retaliation by China. The contradiction over Taiwan’s official status is the main source of tension. It provides China with an excuse to be belligerent about Taiwan. The US foreign policy vis-àvis China hardened especially after Donald Trump was elected as president of the USA in 2016. Trump followed a policy of tit-for-tat with China especially over trade and later strategic cooperation with Asian nations whose territories disputed by China. Nancy Pelosi visit to Taiwan may have added fuel to fire and the US will also have to respond. Often, under the threat of nuclear war nations ruled by dictators like China and Russia, have managed to thumb their nose on other countries. If the US shirks its obligation, then it will mean a huge loss of reputation and also a signal that the free world is willing to succumb to threats. Even in the Ukraine war, the US and its NATO allies have taken a back seat while Putin grinds Ukraine to dust through bombs, rockets and missiles. China and Russia are encouraging and inspiring other rogue nations for an axis against free nations.
DailyDevotion The Bewildering Call of God
“…and all things that are written by the prophets concerning the Son of Man will be accomplished.”…But they understood none of these things… —Luke 18:31, 34
God called Jesus Christ to what seemed absolute disaster. And Jesus Christ called His disciples to see Him put to death, leading every one of them to the place where their hearts were broken. His life was an absolute failure from every standpoint except God’s. But what seemed to be failure from man’s standpoint was a triumph from God’s standpoint, because God’s purpose is never the same as man’s purpose. This bewildering call of God comes into our lives as well. The call of God can never be understood absolutely or explained externally; it is a call that can only be perceived and understood internally by our true inner-nature. The call of God is like the call of the sea— no one hears it except the person who has the nature of the sea in him. What God calls us to cannot be definitely stated, because His call is simply to be His friend to accomplish His own purposes. Our real test is in truly believing that God knows what He desires. The things that happen do not happen by chance— they happen entirely by the decree of God. God is sovereignly working out His own purposes. If we are in fellowship and oneness with God and recognize that He is taking us into His purposes, then we will no longer strive to find out what His purposes are. As we grow in the Christian life, it becomes simpler to us, because we are less inclined to say, “I wonder why God allowed this or that?” And we begin to see that the compelling purpose of God lies behind everything in life, and that God is divinely shaping us into oneness with that purpose. A Christian is someone who trusts in the knowledge and the wisdom of God, not in his own abilities. If we have a purpose of our own, it destroys the simplicity and the calm, relaxed pace which should be characteristic of the children of God.

NAGALAND POST, DIMAPUR SATURDAY, AUGUST 6, 2022
Post-mortem
GNF on Naga Solidarity Walk F riends, we want to make a public statement to mark this occasion. The declaration starts with what we oppose and follows it up with what we want. Please join me with vocal affirmation in the second section. Whereas the Naga People have repeatedly declared and defended our right to freedom and self-determination in our ancestral lands in battle and in writing against the British colonial occupation going back to the 1870s and the Simon Commission in 1929. Whereas ignoring the expressed Naga declaration of freedom from colonial rule in 1947, postcolonial India and Burma continued to impose colonial rule over our lands and our ancestors, so that till today, in 2022, in gross violation of our human and indigenous peoples’ rights, the Naga Homeland lies separated in four states in India and a province in Myanmar. And whereas thousands of Naga patriots have sacrificed their lives in the seven-decade long struggle for political selfdetermination against the continuing colonial control of our lands and lives, especially by Indian military forces going back to the 1950s and still operating in our homeland under protection of extra-judicial laws like the Disturbed Areas Act and Armed Forces Special Powers Act, and under which innocent civilians have been and continue to be regularly harassed, imprisoned, and mass murdered, and generations of their families have suffered and experienced irreparable loss, harm, and disadvantage. Therefore, we believe time has come, yet again, to insist on an immediate peaceful resolution of the Indo-Naga political problem, which must include a constitutional structure and timetable for recognition and implementation of the Peoplehood of the Nagas in a self-determined governance system in an undivided ancestral homeland comprising all the Naga territories. Therefore, we declare the Naga Solidarity Walk of 2022 a necessary peaceful intervention in support of the Naga people’s right to live together in our ancestral homeland. The Walk from Kohima to Tahamzan (Senapati) we just
completed is a hopeful physical enactment of a journey toward Naga Unity across the artificial barriers and boundaries put in our way by the powers that be. So we want to make public what we mean by this Walk and what we stand for, going forward. Please repeat “Kuknalim” after me if you agree: Long live the Peoplehood of the Nagas: One People, One Destiny, in an undivided Ancestral Homeland. May the Naga Solidarity Walk lead to transformative change in our leaders, in all of us, and of the whole society. May it inspire us to reclaim and sustain the better aspects of our collective Naga heritage: • May the Walk lead us to lasting peace and shared prosperity, without exceptions, throughout the Naga Homeland. • May the Walk be a Community Celebration of our beautiful and bountiful homeland which belongs to the Naga Family as a whole. • May we use the Naga Solidarity Walk for justice and noble pro-Naga causes, not against the legitimate rights of other people in India, Myanmar or elsewhere. • May this positive communitybased action inspire every Naga to proudly exercise our right to walk in our God-given homeland, no matter what anyone may say to the contrary. • May we as members of the Naga Family learn to heal ourselves from the wounds and offenses we have inflicted on one another for the sake of a brighter Future together which beckons us to forgive one another and to bestow the gift of grace even if it may not be deserved. • May the Naga Solidarity Walk we have set in motion grow in strength and contribute richly to a successful journey of the Peoplehood of the Nagas in a thriving, undivided ancestral Homeland. • Here’s to the Nagas: One People, One Destiny. Kuknalim! On behalf of Global Naga Forum: Vichutuolie Mere Convenor Naga Solidarity Walk Core Committee.
Nagaland People’s Action Committee representation to Prime Minister
W
e bring greetings to you from the Naga populace at the grass root level. Today, the 5th of August, 2022, the Naga general public convened a massive public rally in Dimapur town specifically to demand for Naga political solution without further delay. In the mammoth rally, the common Naga public unanimously resolved to submit this representation to your benign authority for early positive action. Most hon’ble Sir, the Naga people are in the 25th year of the political negotiations between the GOI and the Naga negotiators which began in 1997. The unending political process has adversely affected the lives of each individual and family in the state of Nagaland. It has taken a huge toll on the entire system of governance. The unresolved political issue has heralded in unimaginable cycle of corruption at all levels, crippling public health care, education and overall infrastructure developments which are in shambles for obvious reasons to say the least. Unresolved Naga issue has produced countless scoundrels and thieves and in the name of political issue, threats and intimidations have stifled the growth of a perceived Naga society, which you assured, would be a vibrant one. Prime Minister Sir, as
the economic wellbeing of everyday Naga family has completely collapsed in the absence of equitable welfare formula and governance saves on paper, the consequences is frightening to say the least. The ultimate victim being the brilliantly educated unemployed, school dropouts and all whose futures are now ruined. Entrepreneurship and asset creation are critical components in a society like ours. Government projects are siphoned off brazenly through percentage cuts and shares. Private businesses are grossly extorted by armed groups. Without a political settlement, we foresee thousands of futureless fresh, youthful, highly qualified angry men and women taking up guns to challenge those stifling their growth and progress. Your promise to the Nagas has not been fulfilled as yet. Prime minister Sir, is it not a betrayal to our people, considering that negotiations with Naga groups have officially concluded? The above facts are just the few instances of how the citizens of Nagaland have been subjected to unbearable consequences due to the inordinate delay in resolving the Naga political issue. Prime minister Sir, you are aware that the ceasefire and the political negotiations under its peaceful atmosphere are all but a
means to an end. Therefore, if the means are to be nurtured as the end, it becomes more of a betrayal to the public of Nagaland. We expect GOI to appreciate the patience of the citizens of Nagaland all these 25 years because the people yearn for genuine peace in the region which can be brought in by political solution alone. Allow us also to bring to your notice that in the year, 2018 when the Civil Societies and all political parties including the BJP unequivocally demanded for solution before election, the BJP breached the trust of the people and had filed their nominations with a slogan “Election for Solution”, against the will and wishes of the people which is still fresh in our memory. Prime Minister Sir, the public rally therefore, urges upon the GOI to implement the concluded political negotiations into solution without any further delay. The rally is a firm signal to the Government of India (GOI) that the people of Nagaland will welcome the political solution and uphold it under any circumstances. NPAC convenor Theja Therieh NPAC co-convenors Imsumongba Pongen, Shikuto Zalipu, Kekongchim Yimkhiung NPAC secretary Khondao Ngullie NPAC joint secretary Akhu Naga
If negotiators cannot deliver, wind it up and let people decide: NPAC (From p-1) If that is the case then within that parameter, they should bring out what solution they can hammer out. I think, they know what is possible and what is not possible. Yes, Naga negotiators will demand because these are very complex issues and we have a long way to go even beyond this solution. Government of India is the one who is engaging these negotiators, they know what can be given and what cannot be given. So, if something is not permissible, something which they cannot give, they should not hang on that. If this negotiation cannot bring about any solution, then just wind it up, close it, no negotiation, let the people decide what they want. I think we are capable of deciding what we want for our future. Don’t undermine the people, we are all capable. NP: Are you suggesting that if a definite decision cannot be taken on the issue of Naga flag and constitution, then should GoI engage with the people? Therieh: The public as such cannot enter into the negotiation because we have given the mandate very clearly till such time they cannot proceed any longer. It is for them to come to the people and tell what is their difficulty. They cannot just keep stalling the process. NP: GoI has reached out to civil and tribal bodies and made clear the reasons for the delay in solving the Naga political issue. Should public continue to blame GoI for the delay? Therieh: Yes, GoI has
come to the people. It shared even the Framework Agreement and Agreed Position to the public. And as far as I know, people have not given any negative reaction to that, which means they are ready to accept or are prepared. So, what is not possible is not possible and what is possible is possible. It is for GoI to say what is not possible. And our negotiators cannot just go on with what is not possible. NP: GoI has made its stand clear on the demand for separate Naga flag and constitution. NSCN (I-M) has also maintained that there can be no solution without flag and constitution. What is the stand of NPAC? Therieh: Personally speaking, constitution or flag will only symbolise and represent what is agreed upon. So, it is not necessary to ask for flag or constitution. At the moment, if there is no integration and if there is no sovereignty, I don’t know what is the requirement of constitution. Even if the constitution is required, constitution have to be of the people, by the people, for the people. The people will decide. We should not put the cart before the horse. Once something is agreed upon and if a new dispensation require constitution, then the people will vote for that constitution. Constitution should be derived from the people. I think there is no sense in asking for constitution. NP: Are you implying that the demand for separate flag and constitution is just a way to prolong the Naga political issue without reaching
any solution? Therieh: They have not shown us the competencies. The flag will only symbolise and represent that agreed status. If we have a separate status, if we have a sovereign status or whatever status they have brought out of this negotiation, flag will simply represent that. Do we need to have a constitution or not is also an issue. At the moment, we are not privy to the negotiating points so just simply demanding the flag, I think, people are at loss. I think, it is because those negotiators want to continue to live in comfort zone, they don’t want to end up the negotiations. If that is the case, it is not fair. NP: Should the negotiating groups inform the people what has been agreed upon? Therieh: See, we have given mandate to somebody. If they are engaging with somebody on our behalf with our mandate, is it not proper for them to come to us and tell us this is what we have agreed upon? It is not appropriate to ask somebody else of what our representatives have agreed upon. Since they are negotiating on behalf of the people, they should take people into their confidence. Otherwise, where do we begin and where do we end? NP: Naga peace process has been going on for last 25 years without any solution. Do you feel that the negotiators have lost the confidence of Nagas? Therieh: It is a very complex issue; we do not blame anyone but there has to be a political will. Govern-
ment of India being a very powerful democratic nation should conclude what they started. Both NSCN (I-M) and NNPGs have submitted whatever they want. All the points that they want are with government of India but ultimately it is what government of India can give, whether we like it or not. Government of India must consider what it can give and come up with a comprehensive common draft. They say talk is formally closed, we believe that and we know that the present negotiations are not discussing on major agendas. If that is the case then why should solution be prolonged? Interlocutor R. N. Ravi resigned but government of India has not appointed any interlocutor. So, I think somewhere people are being taken for a ride. NP: Does NPAC feel that Naga political issue has been shelved by GoI? Therieh: No, we believe the word of the Prime Minister, Narendra Modi. He said that a great democratic nation like India is embarrassed when they cannot solve 70, 80 years conflict with the Nagas. We believe he is sincerely wanting to bring a solution. But he must demonstrate that and he must take the final call because the ball is in the court of Prime Minister and Home Minister to take a political call. Despite all these engagements, if the leadership don’t take political call, then it will not be closed. NP: There is no consensus among the Nagas. In such a backdrop, how do you expect GoI to give a solution?
Therieh: In politics there can never be a consensus. In a democracy there has to be a majority and the voice of the majority should not be ignored. NP: Before every election this kind of rallies happen. Political parties, NGOs make strong statements and some even call for boycott. With all these, elections still happen with high turnout and participation. So, what is new about NPAC’s rally? Therieh: In the past, it happened because people have no option. When BJP came up with the slogan, “election for solution”, BJP was willing in the centre, they had absolute majority in the people’s house and people tend to believe their slogan but they have miserably failed. Now, again people talk about solution before election or whatever. I think as elected government they should be responsible enough to get clear signal of what people want and they should not press the people against their will and wishes again and again. If a democratic nation like India for that matter a state like Nagaland, if they want to prioritise five years assembly election to Naga political solution then it is very unfortunate. Election will come and go but this solution is already ripe, we must harvest. Why should we go for another election and let the people continue to suffer under the status quo? People should not continue to live and suffer under the status quo. This is like fishing in troubled waters. They confuse the people; they misled the people and when the water is
dirty and people are not clear of what is going to happen, they take full advantage of it. If they really want to manipulate and if they really want to drag the people, people become helpless but in democracy this is not fair, they should respect people’s aspiration. NP: What will be the stand of NPAC in case solution does not materialise before election? Therieh: God forbid. We want to bring out a solution for that we are giving a final call to government of India. Please take a call, please demonstrate your political will, this is the right time, people are prepared to accept whatever maybe the circumstances because we want solution. NP: Does NPAC consider itself a legitimate stakeholder? Therieh: People are the legitimate stakeholders and we are simply a committee reflecting their opinions. Tomorrow if people say that they will express their opinions through another channel so be it. We will go by what the people want because NPAC itself is not an entity, it is not an organisation also. NP: Is NPAC ready to engage with GoI? Therieh: Yes, the representation we have approved in the rally is very clear. We will submit it to the government of India. If government of India so desire to ask the people’s opinion definitely we will consult the people’s opinion and come out with people’s ultimate opinion on this Naga political issue.
India needs a good education to match the potential of Industry 4.0
T
he world has witnessed four Industrial Revolutions; the most recent one is Industrial Revolution 4.0. The signals are such that transformation is foreseeable in all sectors including the education setting, making Education 4.0 the famous catchphrase among the experts of education today. What exactly is Education 4.0? If we look at our past experience at how education has altered since the first industrial revolution, we might well understand the daunting task for students and teachers today. In 1780, there was little or no hope that children would have any education
at all. People learned a skill, usually with on the job beginner training. Where it was present, education was for the rich. When the second revolution started industry needed trained workers, suddenly, an education was needed Students came in with no knowledge, the teacher supplied them information in particular subjects and at the end of the session, the student assessment was done to evaluate if they remembered what they were taught. This encouraged a strict framework of study disciplines, education standards and ultimately consistent evaluation. The introduction of the computer did not
change the original thinking behind our education system. Instead, education experts plainly took advantage of the technology and swapped educators with computers, facilitating training, learning and evaluation to be handled by machine. It can be deemed comparable to the substitution of labor-intensive jobs by machine-intensive jobs that arose as a revolution in the 21st Century. This means that Industry 4.0 will not only have an effect on industries but accordingly will change the way employment and education will be seen. There are few trends related to this learning, it can be taken place anytime any-
where. E-Learning devices facilitate great prospects for far-flung, self-rate learning. Learning will be customized for each student. They will be introduced to next level only after a certain expertise is achieved. Students have a preference to decide how they want to learn. Students have the freedom to select the learning tools or techniques that they prefer. Students learning will be more project-based. By linking in the projects, they are working on their managerial, networking and time management skills which are handy in their future academic profession. Students will be open to elements like data interpreta-
tion in which it is essential to apply their theoretical knowledge to numbers and use their reasoning skills to make presumption based on reason and trends from given data. In addition to this, students will be appraised differently and the conservative policy to evaluate students may become inappropriate. Students’ views will be considered in designing and updating the curriculum. Education 4.0 shifts major learning accountability from teachers to students. An average classroom will witness a major change in the next 5 to 7 years in terms of arrangement; flexible assignments will house multiple
learning styles. India needs a high-class education to be able to match the potential of Industry 4.0. Educational institutions were by and large established by business groups and politicians than real academic experts keen to play a part in the growth of education in India. Education has to be reasonably priced and responsible; however, qualitative aspect is vital. Educational Institutes and industry personnel meet during the placement time, but they need to sit together time and again and decide on the demands of the industry. MPs can be arrested during Parliament session: Naidu
days thereafter, Naidu said, adding that this privilege is already incorporated under Section 135A of the Civil Procedure Court. “However, in criminal matters members of Parliament are not on a different footing than a common citizen. That means members of Parliament do not enjoy any immunity from being arrested in a criminal case during the session or otherwise,” Naidu clarified. He cited his past observations in this regard and Supreme Court rulings. Naidu reiterated that no member of the House should avoid appearing before any investigating agency is he is called upon to do so, by citing reasons of the House duty. “It applies to all...because you can only perform when the House is in session seeking further date but you cannot avoid the enforcement agencies or the law enforcement agencies’ summons or notices. This has to be taken note of by one and all,” the Rajya Sabha Chairman said.

Uproot inferiority complex to achieve Independence in truest sense: Shah NEW DELHI, AUG 8 (PTI): Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Friday said India is set to take a giant leap in the 75th year of its Independence and nobody will be able to stop it from becoming a great nation. Shah said foreign powers could keep India under their rule as they succeeded in creating an inferiority complex amongst Indians which should be uprooted to achieve independence in its truest sense. The Home Minister was speaking after the launch of a mega serial ‘Swaraj – Bharat Ke Swatantrata Sangram Ki Samagra Gatha’, produced by Doordarshan to mark the 75th anniversary of Independence. The 75-episode mega show chronicles lesserknown tales about Indian history and would be telecast from August 14 on Doordarshan in Hindi and regional languages. Shah wondered if India could claim to have achieved the true ideals of Swaraj if it failed to protect its languages, culture,
vilisation had progressed for several thousand years and there was no need for any NGO to educate the country about its culture. “Those who ruled us, destroyed our best systems. They knew that they could rule us only if they succeeded in creating an inferiority complex within us, because we were ahead of them in every aspect,” Shah said. “These people created a myth that we were illiterate. The country that gave Geeta and the Vedas to the world, the country that gave the world ‘zero’, the country that gave the world astronomy, how can it be illiterate,” he asked. Shah expressed the hope that the television serial ‘Swaraj’ will help the country get rid of its inferiority complex and make the youth take pride in the country’s history. In his brief address, Thakur lauded Shah as a master strategist and a modern day ‘Chanakya’ who fulfilled the long standing demand of getting rid of Article 370 and 35A, and taking steps to strengthen national security.
NEW DELHI, AUG 5 (PTI): Rajya Sabha Chairman M Venkaiah Naidu on Friday clarified that members of Parliament do not enjoy any immunity from arrest in criminal cases when the House is in session and they cannot avoid summons issued by law enforcement agencies. Rajya Sabha proceedings were adjourned for almost half an hour till 11.30 am on Friday as Congress members created an uproar alleging misuse of probe agencies by the government. When the Upper House assembled for the morning session, Chairman M Venkaiah Naidu proceeded with the scheduled business of laying of the listed papers on the table, but had to adjourn the House within a few minutes. More than 10 Congress members trooped into the Well of the House, protesting against the alleged misuse of central probe agencies. The Congress members said the Leader of Opposition in the Rajya Sabha, Mallikarjun Kharge, has been “insulted”
as he was summoned by the Enforcement Directorate on Thursday during the working hours of Parliament. When the Upper House reassembled after the adjournment at 11:30, Naidu said there is a wrong notion among the members that they have a privilege from action by agencies while Parliament is in session. He said that under Article 105 of the Constitution members of Parliament enjoy certain privileges so they can perform their duties without any hindrances. One of the privileges is that a member of Parliament cannot be arrested in a civil case 40 days before the commencement of the session or committee meeting and 40

normal in Srinagar District. These visuals are from Lal Chowk area,” Srinagar Police tweeted alongside a 13-second video of Lal Chowk showing scenes of normalcy. Mehbooba and her party workers assembled at the party office near the Sher-e-Kashmir Municipal Park here to protest against the bifurcation of J&K into Union territories and abrogation of the provisions of Article 370 of the Constitution which accorded special status to the erstwhile state. NEW DELHI, AUG 5 (PTI): West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee met Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday and raised a host of issues concerning her state, including GST dues and timely release of funds by the Centre under various schemes. The Prime Minister’s Office shared a picture of the meeting, which lasted about an hour. In a memorandum to the PM, Banerjee said she had repeatedly sought his intervention for urgent release of funds due to the state on account of the implementation of the rural job scheme MGNREGA, PM Awas Yojana and the PM Gramin Sadak Yojana. The amount due to the state under these schemes now stood at about Rs
special status, the protesters were allowed to briefly camp outside the PDP office. They later dispersed peacefully. Talking to reporters, Mehbooba said her party was determined not only to fight for the restoration of the special status of J&K but also work for lasting solution to the issue of Kashmir. “In the coming time, they will destroy the Constitution and foundations on which this country stands. They will make this a theological state and replace the tricolour with saffron flag. They will change the national flag as they did with our Constitution and flag. But we are determined to fight for restoration of what has been snatched from us,” she said. The PDP president later took to Twitter saying that the the BJP’s designs for Jammu and Kashmir have unravelled. “As BJP’s malicious designs for J&K have unravelled, the pattern of suppression & fear is now knocking at the door in rest of the country too. Weaponising their pet agencies & using terror laws to stifle dissent has become the norm,” she said.
MUMBAI, AUG 5 (PTI): Police on Friday detained several Maharashtra Congress leaders outside the Vidhan Bhavan here before their planned protest against the Centre over price rise and other issues, with the party claiming that thousands of its workers were taken into preventive custody across the city. Following the action, the party leaders slammed the central and the state governments for trying to “suppress” the opposition’s voice. The Congress on Friday held nationwide stir against price rise, the Goods and Services Tax (GST) hike on essential items and unemployment. State Congress president Nana Patole and former ministers Balasaheb Thorat, Varsha Gaikwad, Naseem Khan, Chandrakant Handore were among some of the senior leaders who were detained outside the Vidhan Bhavan, the state legislature complex in south Mumbai, before they could proceed to the Raj Bhavan for the protest. These leaders said they had planned to carry out

a protest march to the Raj Bhavan, the official residence of the governor in south Mumbai, to protest against the Centre’s policies. As per the plan announced on Thursday, the march was to begin from Hanging Garden and culminate at the Raj Bhavan around 11 am. A heavy deployment of police was put in place outside the Vidhan Bhavan, where the Congress leaders held a meeting. As they came out of the building, the police personnel prevented them from proceeding to-

17,996.32 crore, she said. In her memorandum, Banerjee has tabulated the total amount due to the state under different schemes and benefits. The amount that is due to the state from the central government as on 31st July, 2022 has been estimated to be around Rs 1,00,968.44 crore. Banerjee has often accused the BJP-led central government of delaying the payment of GST dues to states, especially the ones ruled by opposition parties. After the meeting, Banerjee directly went to meet President Droupadi Murmu. Banerjee, who arrived here on a four-day visit on Thursday, is likely to attend a Niti Aayog governing council meeting on August 7 to be chaired by PM Modi.

Congress leader Balasaheb Thorat told the police that it was their right to stage an agitation over the issues concerning people, including rising inflation. “Even in the British rule, peaceful protests were allowed. EMIs to rise as RBI hikes interest rate again 7.2 per cent in FY23. The RBI’s six-member rate-setting panel voted unanimously on the rate hike decision while sticking to its resolve to withdraw the accommodative stance. Suman Chowdhury, Chief Analytical Officer, Acuité Ratings & Research, said the deposit and lending rate hikes are expected by banks, given the improved credit demand in the economy. India Ratings and Research (Ind-Ra) said the current policy rate hike cycle is expected to continue till RBI reaches what is known as ‘neutral policy rate’. This is the short-term policy rate which is expected to stabilize the economy down the road in the long run, it said adding if the RBI’s FY23 inflation projection holds, then it may look for another 25-50 bps in the remaining months of FY23. The central bank surprised markets with a 40 bps hike at an unscheduled meeting in May, followed by
pee.
The Indian economy has been impacted by the global economic situation and is grappling with the problem of high inflation. “Nevertheless, with strong and resilient fundamentals, India is expected to be amongst the fastest growing economies during 2022-23 according to the IMF, with signs of inflation moderating over the course of the year,” he said. The financial sector is well capitalised and sound while the foreign exchange reserves - supplemented by net forward assets - provide insurance against global spillovers. “Our umbrella remains strong,” he said. Ranen Banerjee, Leader, Economic Advisor y Services, PwC India, said there will be less aggressive future rate increases from the US Fed going forward given some impacts on the economy being already felt. “The increase in the repo rates will take some time to transmit in actual lending rates and therefore impact on growth momentum in the current financial year is going to be limited and hence a real GDP growth of around 7 per cent should be achievable,” Banerjee said.

Later interacting with the media after the programme, NPAC convenor Theja Therieh asked the negotiating parties as to whether 25 years of unending negotiations were not enough to reach any solution? He said if solution cannot be secured then to let Naga people decided what to do. Therieh reiterated that unending negotiations cannot continue at the cost of people’s suffering and reminded all that “enough was enough”. He also demanded that nothing should be hidden regarding solution and that anything being negotiated must be shared with the people. Asked whether any representation would be submitted to the NPGs, Therieh said the Centre had initiated the peace process by inviting NSCN (I-M) and WC, NNPGs and on its part, NPAC will press the Centre to finish what it had started.

Representatives of various CSOs and elders addressed the rally. Former president of Eastern Nagaland People’s Organisation (ENPO) Kekongchim Yimkhiung pointed out that Naga issue was not specific to a tribe or region, but encompassed all Nagas and so whatever be the solution, it would be impact entire Nagas. Kekongchim also lamented that Nagas were divided and fighting among themselves. On why solution was required, Kekongchim referred to the high unemployment rate in Nagaland and cautioned that the State
would become a land of mafias if the problem continued longer. He also said Naga society was also divided into two groups – the “haves” and “have nots”. He warned that if the economic disparity persisted, there would soon be a revolution by the “have nots” and therefore, solution was the only answer. Kekongchim remarked that by shying away from the truth has made Nagas confused on the Naga issue and also made it complex. He also questioned why solution could not be secured even after 25years of negotiations? He also noted that even negotiators had been claiming that the

expectations and triggering second-round effects,” Das said. RBI said the volatility in the global market is leading to imported inflation. The spillover from geopolitical shocks has resulted in uncertainty in the inflation trajectory. Global commodity, metal and food prices have eased from recent peaks, however, they still remain elevated. On the domestic front, higher sowing of kharif crops bodes well for the food price outlook. The shortfall in paddy sowing is being monitored closely, even though rice stock remains above buffer norms. Since May, the central bank has cumulatively raised interest rate by 140 bps in its effort to contain inflation. Despite this sharp hike, RBI expects inflation to remain above its comfort zone and has retained CPI inflation forecast at 6.7 per cent for current fiscal year. RBI expects India’s GDP growth to remain strong at
a 50 bps increase in June, but prices have shown little sign of cooling off yet. The latest increase mirrors the US Federal Reserve-led global tightening of interest rates to rein in spiralling prices, caused by supply snarls and energy price shocks following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. The monetary policy committee (MPC) believes “calibrated withdrawal of monetary policy accommodation is warranted to keep inflation expectations anchored and contain the second-round effects,” Das said. On the rupee depreciating against the US dollar, he said at a 4.7 per cent decline, the rupee fared much better than several reserve currencies as well as many of its EME and Asian peers. “The depreciation of the Indian rupee is more on account of the appreciation of the US dollar rather than weakness in macroeconomic fundamentals of the Indian economy. Market interventions by the RBI have helped in containing volatility and ensuring the orderly movement of the rupee,” he said. MUMBAI, AUG 5 (PTI): Home, auto and other loan EMIs are set to rise further after RBI on Friday raised the key interest rate by 50 basis points, the third straight increase since May in an effort to cool stubbornly high inflation. The increase in lending rate or the repurchase rate (repo) by 50 bps to 5.40 per cent is 25 bps higher than the pre-pandemic repo level. Reserve Bank of India (RBI) Governor Shaktikanta Das signalled that the second straight half-point hike wasn’t the end of the rate tightening regime and more may come to tame inflation that has for six months stayed above the comfort zone of 6 per cent. The central bank however did not revise its existing economic growth or inflation forecast despite indications of a global slowdown, recessionary conditions in the developed economies, and the moderation already witnessed in commodity prices. “Inflationary pressures are broad-based and core inflation remains elevated. Inflation is projected to remain above the upper tolerance level of 6 per cent through the first three quarters of 2022-23, entailing the risk of destabilising inflation

China cannot stop US from visiting Taiwan: Pelosi Chinese-fired ballistic missiles fall into Japan’s EEZ TOKYO, AUG 5 (AP): China will not isolate Taiwan by preventing US officials from travelling there, US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said Friday in Tokyo, wrapping up her Asia tour highlighted by a visit to Taipei that infuriated China. The Chinese have tried to isolate Taiwan, Pelosi said, including most recently by preventing the self-governing island from joining the World Health Organisation. “They may try to keep Taiwan from visiting or participating in other places, but they will not isolate Taiwan by preventing us to travel there,” she said, defending her trip that some say has escalated tension in the region.
U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, left, shakes hands with Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida.
Pelosi called the contention “ridiculous” and said that her trip to Taiwan was not intended to change the status quo for the island but to maintain peace in the Taiwan Strait. She praised Taiwan’s hard-fought democracy, including its progress in diversity including LGBTQ rights, and success in technology and business, while criticizing China’s vio-
lations of trade agreements, proliferation of weapons and human rights problems. “If we do not speak out for human rights in China because of commercial interests, we lose all moral authority to speak out about human rights any place in the world,” Pelosi said. “China has some contradictions — some progress in terms of lifting people
up, some horrible things happening in terms of the Uyghurs. In fact, it’s been labelled a genocide.” Pelosi said “the two big countries” — the United States and China — must communicate in areas such as climate and other global issues. “It isn’t about our visit determining what the US-China relationship is. It’s a much bigger and longer-term challenge and once again, we have to recognise that we have to work together on certain areas.” “Our friendship with Taiwan is a strong one. It is bipartisan in the House and in the Senate, overwhelming support for peace and the status quo in Taiwan,” she said. Pelosi, the first House speaker to visit Taiwan in 25 years, said Wednesday in Taipei that American commitment to democracy on the island and elsewhere “remains ironclad”. Pelosi and five other
members of Congress arrived in Tokyo late Thursday after visiting Singapore, Malaysia, Taiwan and South Korea. China, which claims Taiwan and has threatened to annex it by force if necessary, called her visit to the island a provocation and on Thursday began military drills, including missile strike training, in six zones surrounding Taiwan, in what could be its biggest since the mid-1990s. Pelosi said that China had launched the “strikes probably using our visit as an excuse”. Earlier Friday, Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida said that China’s military exercises aimed at Taiwan represent a “grave problem” that threatens regional peace and security after five ballistic missiles launched as part of the drills landed in Japan’s exclusive economic zone near a southwestern remote island.
9 China halts climate, China summons European military ties over diplomats on Taiwan views Pelosi Taiwan visit
BEIJING, AUG 5 (AP): China says it is cancelling or suspending dialogue with the US on issues from climate change to military relations and anti-drug efforts in retaliation for a visit this week to Taiwan by US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi. The measures announced Friday are the latest in a promised series of steps intended to punish Washington for allowing the visit to the island it claims as its own territory to be annexed by force if necessary. China is holding threatening military exercises in six zones off Taiwan’s coasts. Missiles were also fired over Taiwan, defence officials told state media. China opposes the selfgoverning island having its own engagements with foreign governments.
BEIJING, AUG 5 (AP): China says it summoned European diplomats in the country to protest statements issued by the Group of Seven nations and the European Union criticising threatening Chinese military exercises surrounding Taiwan. The Foreign Ministry on Friday said Vice Minister Deng Li made “solemn representations” over what he called “wanton interference in China’s internal affairs”. China has dispatched navy ships and warplanes and launched missiles into the Taiwan Strait in response to a visit this week by US Speaker of the House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi to Taiwan, which China regards as its own territory to be annexed by force if necessary. On the Chinese coast across from Taiwan, tourists gathered Friday to try to catch a glimpse of any mili-
tary aircraft heading toward the exercise area. Fighter jets could be heard flying overhead and tourists taking photos chanted, “Let’s take Taiwan back,” looking out into the blue waters of the Taiwan Strait from Pingtan island, a popular scenic spot. On Friday morning, China sent military ships and war planes across the mid-line of the Taiwan Strait, the Taiwanese Defence Ministry said, crossing what had been an unofficial buffer zone between China and Taiwan for decades. Five of the missiles fired by China landed in Japan’s Exclusive Economic Zone off Hateruma, an island far south of Japan’s main islands, Japanese Defence Minister Nobuo Kishi said. He said Japan protested the missile landings to China as “serious threats to Japan’s national security and the safety of the Japanese people.”
China sends warships, jets close SL to hold crucial talks on formation of all-party govt to Taiwan as tensions escalate TAIPEI, AUG 5 (IANS): Taiwan’s Defence Ministry on Friday said that Chinese warships and aircraft conducted military drills in waters near the island, as tensions escalated in the region following US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s visit earlier this week. In a statement, the Ministry said that China’s People’s Liberation Army (PLA) forces crossed the median line -- the halfway point between the island and mainland China -- in a move it called a “highly provocative act”, reports CNN. The line has previously been an informal but largely respected border of control between Beijing and Taipei. While tens of thousands of tons of grains are now making their way out with these latest shipments, it’s still a fraction of the 20 million tonnes of grains which Ukraine says are trapped in the country’s silos and ports, and which must be shipped out in order to make space for the new harvest.

I S TA N B U L , AU G 5 (AP): Three more ships with grain have departed Ukrainian ports and are headed to Turkey for inspection, Turkey’s defence ministry said on Friday. The three ships are loaded with a total of 58,000 tonnes of corn. The departure of the ships comes after the first grain ship since the start of the war left Ukraine earlier this week. It crossed the Black Sea under a wartime deal and passed inspection Wednesday in Istanbul and then headed on to Lebanon. Spain has had 4,577 confirmed cases in the three months since the start of the outbreak, which has been linked to two raves in Europe, where experts say the virus was likely spread
through sex. The only country with more infections than Spain is the much larger United States, which has reported 7,100 cases. In all, the global monkeypox outbreak has seen more than 26,000 cases in nearly 90 countries since May. There have been 103 suspected deaths in Africa, mostly in Nigeria and Congo, where a more lethal form of monkeypox is spreading than in the West. Health experts stress that this is not technically a sexually transmitted disease, even though it has been mainly spreading via sex among gay and bisexual men, who account for 98% of cases beyond Africa. The virus can be spread to anyone who has close, physical contact with an infected person, their clothing or bedsheets.

s the makers of ‘Jokers’ announced its sequel set for 2024 release, speculations were rife that actress-singer Lady Gaga would essay the role of the clown prince’s partner in crime Harley Quinn. But now, the ‘Hold My Hand’ hitmaker has confirmed her casting in the film by posting a musical teaser to social media. The sequel, officially titled ‘Joker: Folie A Deux,’ will star Gaga opposite Joaquin Phoenix, returning to the role of Joker after winning the Oscar for best actor thanks to his performance in the 2019 first instalment, reports ‘Variety’. The teaser is set to “Cheek to Cheek,” which Gaga has famously covered in her music career alongside Tony Bennett. Director Todd Phillips posted the screenplay’s cover on Instagram back on June 7, revealing the ‘Folie A Deux’ subtitle. According to ‘Variety,’ the phrase refers to a shared delusional disorder, and Joker’s only real companion - other than Batman, anyway - has been Harley, a character first created for ‘Batman: The Animated Series’ in the early 1990s. The teaser, however, does not outright confirm Gaga is playing Harley. ‘Joker: Folie A Deux’ will drop in theatres on October 4, 2024. (IANS)

Earlier this year, Rupal stunned pre-race favourite Priya Mohan of Karnataka to clinch the gold medal in the women’s 400m at the National U-20 Federation Cup Athletics Championships here on Friday. Rupal is the second Indian to have won a medal in the women’s 400m after Hima Das clinched a historic gold in the 2018 edition of the championships in Finland with a time of 51.46s. Olympic champion javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra was the first Indian to win a gold in the championships in 2016 in Poland. Rupal’s bronze is India’s ninth medal overall from the championships, which was earlier known as World Junior Championships. Nadal withdraws from Montreal because of abdominal injury
MADRID, AUG 5 (AP): Rafael Nadal withdrew from the upcoming hard-court tournament in Montreal on Friday because of the abdominal injury that caused him to pull out of Wimbledon ahead of the semifinals. The Spaniard had been 19-0 in Grand Slam matches this year when he decided the injury was too much at Wimbledon. He won the Australian Open and the French Open to increase his major total to a men’s record 22 — one more than Novak Djokovic and two more than Roger Federer. Nadal is a five-time champion in Montreal. “I have been practicing for a while now without serving and started with serves four days ago. Everything has been going well. However, yesterday, after my normal practice, I felt a slight bother on my abdominal and today it was still there,” Nadal said in a statement. “After speaking with my doctor, we prefer to take things in a conservative way and give a few more days before starting to compete.” American player Mackenzie McDonald will replace Nadal in the draw. Djokovic withdrew from the Montreal tournament on Thursday because he is not vaccinated against COVID-19 and is therefore not allowed to enter Canada.
Gukesh, the ‘Rajinikanth’ of Indian chess, wins 7th game in a row
GM D. Gukesh
CHENNAI, AUG 5 (IANS): A 7/7 in the Chess Olympiad for any Grandmaster (GM) is not a small feat and if that was achieved by a 16-year-old GM, then it is even more commendable. The 16-year-old boy is GM D. Gukesh, one of the world’s youngest to get the coveted GM title. And yes! There is certainly a Rajinikanth, the Tamil movie hero known for many stupendous feats on the silver screen, in him. Gukesh’s father is D. Rajinikanth is an ear, nose and throat surgeon. Moreover, Gukesh’s favourite chess players are America’s first World Chess Champion late Bobby Fischer and India’s first World Chess Champion V. Anand. Playing on the top board of India-2

He is more of a positional player who calculates a lot and has a very high strategic sense,” GM Vishnu Prasanna, the coach of India’s latest chess sensation, had told IANS. According to Rajinikanth, his son Gukesh breathes and eats chess and spends several hours before a computer reading and analysing games and also listens to spiritual music. Well, the actor Rajinikanth had also said his political philosophy will be spiritual politics. It is a different matter that the actor backtracked from getting into Tamil Nadu politics.
India beat Bangladesh 5-2 to clinch U20 SAFF Championship
BHUBANESWAR, AUG 5 (AGENCIES): India trounced Bangladesh 5-2 in front of a roaring Kalinga Stadium in Bhubaneswar, Odisha to clinch the SAFF U20 Championship title. Gurkirat Singh spearheaded the Indian attack with four goals in the match and finished as the tournament’s top scorer with eight goals. Apart from Gurkirat’s goalfest, Himangshu Jangra also found the net. MD. Rajon Howladar and Shahin Mia were the two scorers for Bangladesh. India took an early lead in the first minute after the Bangladesh keeper MD Asif brought down Gurkirat inside the box. Gurkirat converted from the spot. Right before half-time, Bangladesh created a brilliant attacking move. MD Rafiqul Islam squared the ball from the right flank and found MD. Rajon Howladar, who took a first-time shot and buried the ball in the bottom-left corner to equalise for Bangladesh. It was a fast start for Bangladesh in the second half, which paid off. The Indians, still looking to find their feet in the second half,

With the match going into extra time after the scores were level at 2-2 after 90 minutes, India made an immediate impact courtesy of Jangra’s strike in the 91st minute. Jangra was missing his finishing boots in the first 90 minutes, but the youngster showed calm and composure to stroke the ball past
the keeper to put India ahead. While Bangladesh was looking to recuperate, India stuck it with another blow. This time, Gurkirat, a familiar face in front of the goal, went past Asif and found the bottom corner of the open net from a tight angle to make it 4-2 for the host. IOC to consider 4th T20I: Iyer, Hooda to fight for Asia cricket’s inclusion Cup berth as India look for series win in 2028 Olympics
Shreyas Iyer
FORT LAUDERHILL ( F LO R I DA ) , AU G 5 (PTI): Shreyas Iyer’s performance will be under intense scrutiny as India gear up for the back-toback T20I games against West Indies, starting here on Saturday, with the twin objective of winning the series and also firming up squad for T20 World Cup. India are currently leading the five-match series 2-1 and nothing would be more satisfying than a couple of thumping wins in front of the USA’s Indian diaspora, which is anticipating an enjoyable weekend cricket carnival. However in this current India set-up, if there is one man whose perforK Y M C
Deepak Hooda
mance will be monitored more than anyone else, it has got to be Iyer. Deepak Hooda, who has used most of the opportunities handed to him, looks good to outwit Iyer at the moment as far as the big ticket T20 World Cup berth is concerned. With KL Rahul and Virat Kohli all set to be back in the playing eleven for the Asia Cup, time is certainly running out for the 27-yearold Mumbaikar, who has had scores of 0, 10 (11 balls) and 24 (27 balls) in the three games so far in the ongoing series. He looked distinctly uncomfortable against the fast and rising deliveries. While the short ball is
his main problem, watching Iyer gives a feeling that he is unable to decide at what pace and which gear would he bat in a T20 game, something that’s not the case when he is taking strike in 50-over format. In head coach Rahul Dravid’s regime so far, no player has got a raw deal in terms of chances and are given long enough rope to succeed. However in case of Iyer, his T20I game hasn’t exactly yielded the results that one has seen him deliver in the ODI cricket. Even then, Dravid has given Iyer nine T20I games in last two and half months, out of which, one in Bengaluru was a wash-out and there hasn’t been a single fifty-plus score even when he got chance to come out within first 10 overs. If Iyer gets a go in the last two games, he has no option but to put his best foot forward as the Asia Cup team, in all probability, will also be the likely team for the T20 World Cup. Even if Iyer makes the cut for Asia Cup or T20 World Cup, there is a miniscule chance of him getting a first XI look-in in a jam-packed top-order.
NEW DELHI, AUG 5 (AGENCIES): After women’s cricket made its debut in T20I format at the Birmingham Commonwealth games 2022, there are growing clamours towards wanting to see the game make its way to the Olympics. Well, there is good news for fans as International Olympic Committee (IOC) will review the possibility of cricket’s inclusion at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, HT reported. IOC has shortlisted cricket for a review along with eight other sporting disciplines namely baseball/softball, flag football, lacrosse, break dancing, karate, kick-boxing, squash, and motorsport. As per a report in ESPNcricinfo, IOC has requested the International Cricket Council (ICC) to submit a presentation to support cricket’s inclusion. The presentation will likely be made during the IOC meeting in Mumbai in 2023. Earlier in February this year, IOC had announced that 28 sports would be a part of Los Angeles Olympics with a focus on youth, and in May, it came up with means to evaluate ‘potential new sports’ and figure if they were a good fit for the Olympics.

CWG: Bajrang, Deepak, Sakshi win gold
Bajrang Punia
BIRMINGHAM, AUG 5 (IANS/AGENCIES): Former Asian and Commonwealth Games winner Bajrang Punia established his superiority in the men’s freestyle 65kg division, winning the gold medal at Birmingham 2022 by beating Lachlan McNeil of Canada 9-2 in the final on Friday. Later, Sakshi Malik pinner her opponent to win the women’s 62kg title and secure India’s second wrestling gold. Deepak Punia then made it three for India by beating Pakistan’s reigning gold medallist Muhammad Inam in the men’s 86kg final. Meanwhile, Anshu

Malik lost the women’s 57kg final and settled for silver. Tokyo Olympic bronze medallist Punia, who won gold medal four years ago in Gold Coast, came out with aggressive intentions and did not allow his young Canadian opponent much chances, forcing two takedowns in the first period itself to go 4-0 up. The Canadian was a bit too defensive in the first period but launched a good attack at the start of the second period to reduce the margin to 2-4. But Punia, a World No 1 in his division, was up to the task and effected two one-leg takedowns to widen
the margin again. He got another point when he pushed his opponent out of the bout area with another one-leg hold. With a few seconds remaining, the 27-year-old Indian wrapped up the bout with another take down to seal a 9-2 victory and claimed the gold medal in authoritative manner. Sakshi, who seemed to have gone off the boil after her success in the Rio Olympics, missing some events and got upstages by younger opponents, made a brilliant comeback both in her bout on Friday and her career as she stomped her authority. Her opponent, who

Sudhir Singh
BIRMINGHAM, AUG 5 (IANS): Indian para-powerlifter Sudhir Singh came up with a brilliant effort to claim the gold medal in the men’s heavyweight division at the Commonwealth Games here, claiming the country’s first medal in powerlifting in Birmingham 2022. Sudhir, who is ranked third in the world in World Para Powerlifting’s Official World Rankings for 2022 with the best lift of 214kg, came up with a top lift of 212kg to win the gold medal with a Commonwealth Games record. This was India’s first medal in the para-sports in Birmingham 2022 and the country’s eighth gold medal and 22nd overall. India has a tally of 8 gold, seven silver,
and seven bronze. Sudhir started with a lift of 208kg and then improved it to 212kg for a Games Record. The 27-yearold attempted to improve his season’s best of 214kg by attempting to lift 217 on Thursday evening but could not successfully complete the lift. Thus, Sudhir Singh had to settle for the best lift of 212, which fetched him 134.5 points and the gold medal. He improved on the record for points with his tally of 134.5 points. Nigeria’s Christian Kechukwu Obichukwu took the silver medal with a best lift of 197kg which fetched him 130.8 points considering his lower body weight than his Indian opponent in the up to 88kg weight division. Scotland’s Micky Yule took the bronze medal with a best lift of 192kg and 130.9 points. It was a weak competition as only Sudhir managed to cross the 200kg mark in an event in which Abdelkareem Mohmmad Ahmad Khattab of Jordan holds the world record of 250kg.

Sindhu, Srikanth in quarterfinals BIRMINGHAM, AUG 5 (PTI): Star Indian shuttlers P V Sindhu and Kidambi Srikanth had another easy outing as they stormed into the quarterfinals of the women’s and men’s singles events respectively with comfortable wins at the Commonwealth Games here on Friday. Sindhu, a silver medallist at the 2018 edition, expectedly faced no resistance from Uganda’s Husina Kobugabe, winning 21-10 21-9 in her pre-quarterfinal match. Srikanth, who had also finished second best at Gold Coast, too didn’t break any sweat on his way to a 21-9 21-12 win over Sri Lanka’s Dumindu Abeywickrama in the men’s singles. Earlier, Indian women’s pairing of Gayatri Gopichand and Treesa Jolly had entered the last eight with a 21-2 21-4 win over Mauritius’ Jemimah Leung For Sang and Ganesha Mungrah. Double Olympic medallist Sindhu will face Malaysia’s Goh Jin Wei in the next round for a place in the semifinals.
P V Sindhu
Sindhu had defeated Goh in two tight games in the final of the mixed team final and can ill-afford to lower her guard against the 22-year-old Malaysian, a winner of the World Junior Championships gold in 2015 and 2018. Former world number one Srikanth will be up against England’s Toby Penty, who is ranked 54th in the world. Gayatri and Treesa will meet Jamaica’s Tahlia Richardson and Katherine Wynter next.
